Hello Alms!! For the asking game: 3. Are there any fics that inspired you to write what you do?

Hi there! Absolutely, lots of fics have inspired me. My first fic, Friends with my Ex, (and the decision to write generally) was heavily influenced by Sei's SMAU "Theory of Parallel and Intersecting Lines," sometimes referred to as TOPAIL. My second fic was indirectly inspired by frenchsoda's "The to do list," which really cracked open for me the idea of here's how to make Beatrice more proactive in the friends to lovers dynamic (and probably subconsciously influenced the structure of that fic). My vampire fics were influenced in the negative by puppybusby's "in my veins" in that I wanted to avoid doing a more serious vampire piece like that (and some minor character choices, like for Crimson and Mary, were more directly influenced by it).

In a broader sense, I've read over 1000 Warrior Nun fics (including SMAUs), so I've been influenced by a LOT. Some highlights off the top of my head are simplykorra and puppybusby, whose characterizations across their fics are probably the foundation of how I hear these characters in my head. Thistle's Beyond our Space and Starlight is something I think about a lot, and especially whenever I write action. If I write a metaphor or a line that sounds particularly beautiful, I probably read something by Casper (daisychiansandbowties on AO3) shortly before writing it, or had something by Casper in my mind. sunsafe's Do a Flip and its Land Upright series are a major influence on a WIP I haven't released yet. If I'm taking a big swing without regard for whether it will be popular because I know it's right for the story, MsWitsEnd's Crowne Affair is probably in the back of my mind.

i drafted out the main plot, like the beginning, middle, end

then decided on the characters personalities and further elaborated them in my head through the profiles and tweets. like each character has some sort of backstory or personality that makes them important to the story? like they’re not just there to be there. I KINDA WANTED ALL CHARACTERS TO NOT JUST BE SIDE CHARACTERS (although that kinda happened with a few in my smau like i’m cussing myself out rn)

made a character relationship chart (which failed btw LINES INTERSECT)

and then after that, i drafted all the sub plots and arcs in the middle.

then i started writing the the texts and twt posts so i would have at least plot to finish and not run out of the motivation to write!

YOUR FOOT TAPS ABSENTLY AGAINST the tile flooring of the restaurant. looking out of the window and across the small intersection, you can see the side of a humble, slightly worn-down building: your old middle school. in the early morning, it’s nice to reminisce on the years you’d spent in that very building alongside sunoo and sunghoon. 

a sigh escapes your lips as you read every single item on the menu for the fourth time, then pull out your phone. you hadn’t expected them to be early, but you’d been sitting in the booth and waiting for over ten minutes. a typed out expression of your frustration sits above your keyboard, and your fingers hover over the send button as you hear the little ding of the bell placed above the restaurant’s door.

“what took you so long?” you scold as sunoo and sunghoon, both clad in coats with the collars standing straight up, approach your table.

“sorry,” sunghoon says, sliding into the booth next to you. sunoo takes the seat directly across from you.

“someone made us go back because he forgot something. twice,” sunoo grumbles, then winces lightly in pain as sunghoon presumably kicks him in the shin under the table.

“no worries.” you sit up straighter in your seat, looking first at sunghoon, then at sunoo. interlacing your fingers and resting your chin on your hands, you smile. “so.”

sunoo frowns at you. “so?”

“so, we’re finally back here together. this feels special somehow.”

next to you, sunghoon’s looking past your head and out of the same window you’d been staring at earlier, eyes tracing over the roof of the school, the courtyard, and the front gates. you follow his gaze and, if you squint hard enough, you think you’d be able to see into the classrooms, probably still identical to how they’d been years ago when the three of you were attending.

inside those classrooms, you’d met sunoo, who was so bright and cheerful even as a preteen, and sunghoon, who’d stolen your favorite eraser and was so quiet sometimes it stressed you out. you weren’t able to pinpoint the exact moment they’d shifted from classmates in your mind to your best friends. the thought made tears prick the back of your eyes.

“it is special,” sunghoon affirms, refocusing on you. sunoo nods, and looks up from his menu.

“okay, hurry and decide what you want to eat,” you say, trying to take an authoritative tone although it comes out slightly rushed with how close you were to tearing up. “we don’t have that long before first period.”

sunghoon, sunoo, and you spend the better part of the next half hour sitting in the booth, happily eating your breakfast. it makes you happy, being able to be with them both like this. once the check is taken care of (sunghoon insists on paying, talking about some agreement he had with sunoo as he grabs your hand to keep you from slipping your card into the clipboard [though, he doesn’t release it once you relent]), you stand up and stretch.

“you’re welcome,” sunoo grins at you while he pulls on the sleeves of his coat.

“for what? sunghoon paid,” you furrow your brows at him.

“i��m basically the reason you two are on speaking terms again.”

“definitely not, it was kind of a stupid idea,” you laugh.

“you’re also kind of the reason we didn’t speak for like a week,” sunghoon adds. you begin walking to the door of the restaurant, bowing slightly to the staff standing behind the counter, then exiting.

“no way, that was all you two,” sunoo glares at the two of you once you’re outside standing on the sidewalk. he eyes sunghoon carefully, trying to tell him something with the raising of his brows, but sighs when sunghoon only tilts his head in confusion. “i’m gonna head to class early, student council things. see you guys later.”

sunoo walks away briskly, waving over his shoulder and leaving you and sunghoon standing by the entrance.

“we still have,” you check your phone, “15 minutes. what do you want to do?”

“i have something for you, actually,” sunghoon says as he gingerly releases your hand and reaches into the inner pocket of his coat.

“what? why?”

“it’s white day, right? i brought you chocolates,” he smiles tenderly.

“but i didn’t get you anything for valentine’s day,” you pout.

“you got me a few days of pity from my friends,” he says. “sunoo didn’t make fun of me for a whole 48 hours, he felt so bad.”

you open your mouth to say something, but he pushes the package into your hands. you carefully accept the heart-shaped box, then peel off the bright orange sticky note stuck to its surface.

“for my soulmate,” you read out, ears growing warm despite the morning chill.

“that’s you.”

“thank you, sunghoon.”

“of course.”

you hug the box to your chest and feel something in the pit of your stomach flutter at the thought. you’re holding a white day gift from park sunghoon, your best friend turned enemy turned friend turned…

“does this mean i can finally change your contact name from future girlfriend to girlfriend?”

“that’s probably the lamest way you could’ve asked me to be your girlfriend,” you chuckle, lacing your fingers with his once more. “but yes.”

he pulls you into another kiss and you can feel his smile pressed softly against your own.

“good,” he whispers. “i’m glad.”

you pull a little closer by his hand, then slip both of your hands into one pocket of your coat. tilting your head just a bit so it can rest lightly against his shoulder, you begin the walk back to campus.

in a way, you feel proud, both of yourself and of sunghoon. despite everything you’ve done to each other, every cruel thing you’ve said, you’d still managed to end up here, hand in hand, hearts fluttering in sync. you look behind you, and the outline of your junior high grows blurry with the distance.

“can we skip first period?” sunghoon asks quietly, squeezing your hands and shooting you a pleading look that breaks you out of your thoughts.

“i don’t think your record can handle another detention,” you answer, shaking your head.

“but it would be worth it.”

After getting the text from Zuko you grabbed your bag from the spot next to you and hurried over to his car, hopping in the passenger seat and setting your bag on the floor below you. The two of you exchanged smiles and Zuko started to drive as you got settled. 

“So, how was your first day of classes? Is BSSU as great as you imagined?” You expected him to push you further about what happened earlier, but he didn’t. You appreciated that more than he knew. 

You chuckled and shrugged. “I think it’s a little too early to tell, but I am enjoying my classes. I got to take an online course a while back as a sort of trial run to see if I would like how things were here, and being in person was even better. It’s so much bigger than Kyoshi and I’m into that. I like being able to just.. be another person in the scheme of things.” 

Zuko nodded and was about to say something when he suddenly slammed on the brakes. You jolted forward but were stopped by Zuko’s arm, which was held out in front of you as he honked his horn at a car that had gone across the intersection without waiting. 

You told yourself that his reaction was pure instinct, you even did it with your passengers when you were driving, but you couldn’t ignore how fast your heart was beating. Just adrenaline from the quick stop. Get over yourself. 

“You okay?” He asked, quickly looking over at you before his eyes settled back on the road. 

“Yeah,” you said as you fiddled with your hands in your lap. “Just unexpected. And no offense to your driving, but I miss being at the wheel, and I hate making you drive me places. Shame fixing my car is probably gonna cost a ton of money that I don’t have.”

“Y/N, I’ve already told you that I don’t mind driving you places. We live in the same place and we go to the same place every day so it’s not inconvenient at all. But if you’re worried about money, I can put in a word for you at my uncle’s teashop. I’ve been working there since my freshman year of high school just to take a break from school, and it’s surprisingly nice. It pays more than minimum wage too, so it’s probably better than anything else you could get.” 

“Are you saying that I can’t get a good job?” You asked with mock contempt. 

“Oh, uh- no! Of course not! I just mean that you’re in college and you’re desperate for work so you’ll probably end up getting a minimum wage job anyways and minimum wage work isn’t bad but it’s not great for keeping yourself afloat and—” Zuko cringed as he dug himself into an even deeper hole, and you laughed at how adorable he was. 

“Calm down Zuko, I’m just teasing you. That’s a really generous offer, but—”

“You’re not being a burden, you’re not imposing, you’re not making things difficult, and I’m not doing this because I pity you. Y/N, I’m trying to help you because I want to help you.” He glanced over at your stunned expression and gave a slight smile. “Does that cover all your self-deprecating bases?” 

You had known the man for less than a week and somehow he was already able to see right through you. You gave a slow nod, still getting over your shock, and smiled back. “Yeah, actually. I guess if it’s really okay with you, then... I’d love to get an interview.” 

The two of you smiled at each other for a moment before your eyes focused on a sign outside of his window and you cursed under your breath. “Actually, Zuko, can you drop me off here? I promised a friend that lives in the city that I would meet her at a cafe to talk about what’s been going on the past few years, and I almost forgot. It’s right over there — she can give me a ride home.” 

He nodded and pulled into an open spot on the side of the street, unlocking the doors once he had stopped the car. You grabbed your bag and got out of the car, grinning at him as you did so. “Thank you so much for the ride and all of the future rides and the job interview and for letting me live with you and for literally everything you’ve already done for me. I’ll see you tonight!” 

You waved as you ran off and he smiled as he returned the wave, very much thinking about how this mirrored the scenario this morning. This time though, he was thinking about you with happiness instead of confusion. Zuko already liked you, and he was looking forward to becoming closer as time went on. It wasn’t anything romantic as far as he knew, but spending time with you was.. nice. And in between living together, working in anthro together, and hopefully becoming coworkers at the Jasmine Dragon, he was going to be able to hang out with you plenty. 

He stayed in the spot until he was sure that you had gotten into the cafe safely, then he pulled out and continued on the way home.

from the writer: if u feel insecure about this, don’t, cuz same. i literally can’t eat a meal w/o getting sauce on my chin n stuff, it’s so bad lmao but otherwise i think it’s kind of a good opportunity to like do those romantic k drama moments where it’s like ‘commere u have some food on ur chin dummy’ and then it has the other person all blushy and ahhhh i think it’s cute even if it’s not in that aspect. also, uh, requests r open???!!! idk i mean i’m standing here empty minded w a shitton of ideas that i have absolutely no motivation to write so i’m pretty much bored especially w summer coming around (i say this even as i’m still doing my osamu series, have summer college classes, and am begging myself to do a konoha smau🧍‍♀️) buuuuut it’d be nice to do some requests every once in a while even tho it does kinda take a bit to come out lol

notes & warnings: reader is a messy eater, cursing, food

frankly, katsuki could care less if you had a little food on your cheek or a little something on your chin

like chewing with your mouth open or improper table manners in public (like putting your feet on the table or sum lol) is a no-go for him, that would just piss him off

but it’s kind of endearing and he lowkey kinda sees it as your trademark of you just being you

because he knows that you try to eat a little cleaner around friends and other people, and sometimes even around him if you guys are having one of those fancy restaurant dates

but disregarding the fancy dates, he likes that you don’t try to keep yourself prettied up (not that you don’t every once in a while)

at first, he might laugh when he sees a piece of food stuck to the side of your mouth

but he will begrudgingly wipe it away for you because all in all, he means well

even when he teases you and pinches your nose after

pretty sure he pinched your nose just to see your cute little face scrunch up, it absolutely becomes the highlight of his entire fucking week whenever you do it but he’s grumpy that it’s hard to immediately capture the moment on his phone

he also has little wet wipes ready for you if you get your hands dirty eating any type of finger food like chicken wings or sandwiches

he does get a bit annoyed if there are too many scrunched up napkins littering the table so he tries to tell you how to use them to the fullest extent he will flick one to your side of the table like it’s finger soccer if one ever gets near him

it’s your ritual to wash your hands after you guys finish eating

he does it with you cause why the hell not? it’s good for personal hygiene so uh wash your hands pls 🙂

if you’re scared to eat in public or like at some food booth or whatever where you can’t control everything that happens around you

it’s okay because katsuki will control everything for you 😀

he’s like one of those people who stand in the middle of an intersection and yell at cars for them to go when the traffic lights aren’t working i forgot what they’re called :’)

“fuck off! what the hell are you looking at, hah?! you bet i’ll beat your fucking ass right here, right now—”

oml hi!! i just read the tags under your reblog for my jaemin smau, and i'm just so 🥺🥺 like you enjoying it makes me so happy !! AND TO HEAR THAT THE DIALOGUE IS FUNNY IS JUST EVERYTHING BC didn't really know if i share the same humor as everyone else,, also definitely tried to make it as realistic as possible. i think in the original, the main lead kinda calls out to yn in the bleachers and was like 'i did it!', but it didn't seem as believable to me SO HOPEFULLY THE CHANGE WAS WORTH IT also also also ik this is rec blog so don't feel pressured into responding to this, i'm just really glad you enjoyed intersection :]

A/N : crazy how this series managed to end on my birthday,, i can't think of a better way to end this tbh, so i guess this is my birthday present to everyone <3

this smau has been very cliché, but i'm not mad at it considering it is my first smau

it was a short journey with all the quick updates given and how fast paced this series was, but i do hope it was worth it!! i wanted to make the epilogue about how prom went with their friends, but i figured sweet moments between the main pairing would suit this story better, so overall it's an open ended ending

thank you for all the support intersection has been given, and i am currently focusing on a new nct dream smau!! it would probably have longer updates compared to this and a more in depth storyline, so if anyone's interested, do send me an ask <3 if you are interested in the synopsis, check my nct dream masterlist ;)
