ive noticed some engagement on some of my monkees (shit)posts from way back in 2012/2013 — my 14/15 year old self. which is endearing, bc im aware the monkees fandom is still going, and is perhaps even more active than it was in my day. this did remind me of a @fansplaining article by allegra rosenberg / @areyougonnabe that i finally got around to reading earlier this week, the beatles live!

(i have no idea how long some of you have been here, so to recap i was fully obsessed with classic rock bands and 1960s/70s pop culture from like, 12 to 15 years old. profound impact on me in many ways, still love 60s/70s music, culture and history. also lmfao at my fandom of the last near-decade being sparked by a film set in the 60s. the several page video essay script about x-men first class' anachronistic 1960s fashion, which is sooo close to actually being filmed, will likely be the ultimate culmination of it all) the beatles were my first music fandom — while i still have feelings for the monkees [obviously, considering my ~12 year attachment to this url across nearly all of my social media] it is the beatles that i still have brain worms for. a tiny, isolated worm, but one nonetheless. so this article, i had to read.)

i was really taken by this section on the anachronistic modernizing of beatles fandom activities.

It takes a certain stripe of fannish brain to obsess over music from a bygone age instead of modern artists—taking something as broadly popular as classic rock and treating it with all the intimate, loving attention that other fans devote to a sci-fi television show, a fantasy book series, or a cult video game. These fans are cultural archaeologists, working with the materials of the past to create the passion of the present. The phenomenon is not limited to the Beatles. On TikTok, fans place meme tweets on pictures of the Stones and Bob Dylan; celebrate Freddie Mercury’s style; and make Monkees fancams. But the Beatles fandom is still top dog, with a kind of default dominance it retains from the dawn of Beatlemania. On Tumblr, you can find gifsets of Beatles movies, fanart, and the occasional Yoko Ono stan post, side by side with more typically Tumblr-esque wackiness along the lines of Paul McCartney posts tagged “#my twink wife”, “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” memes, and toxic yaoi polls.

it made me think about how this phenomenon — the blending of modern fan practices and modern pop culture (fancams, memes, insaneposting, etc) with classic rock fandom is not new (not that allegra insinuates it is — i am speaking generally), but is something that has been around for a while, and is something i participated in quite heavily when it came to monkees fandom. whether it was

editing a music video to the tune of marina + the diamonds

making art of mike nesmith as a genderbent marina + the diamonds analog

not to mention the entirety of the who (slight flashing tw)

creating mockups of a classic rock-themed homestuck/OFF/undertale/earthbound analog:

blending classic rock into my ~aesthetic~ blog theme sensibilities:

this video where i did nothing but put the beginning of baby got back over a scene from the first episode of the monkees and the music lined up almost frighteningly well

or creating emo notepad screenshot aesthetic posts with quotes from head (1968)....

i was very invested in engineering (or maybe just yearning for + acting out desires?) a form of classic rock fandom that was "hip" to the modern fandoms i was aware of. this was likely inspired by the fact that monkees fandom at the time skewed older.

i cannot for the life of me find these accounts or screenshots of them, but i think the ultimate expression of this was a collection of twitter accounts i made as mockups of twitter stan accounts, modeled directly off of one direction accounts at the time. complete with icons that were cut-outs of musicians overlayed onto aesthetic background, and descriptions that noted how many times the musicians had interacted with them.

importantly, i could not have sustained this if not for the close friends i had at the time that were around my age and were on my wavelength, that supported it, commiserated with me, made lots — especially on the homestuck parts. even if it was a small thing, in a small fandom, it was a communal effort

idk. its interesting to see that these dreams of mine have now come to fruition.

There have been rumors for years that Ian, Nina or Paul saved Kat's job. The answer is none of them did. According to Julie Plague, it was Kat who convinced her to keep Bonnie. The only reason these rumors persist is because are searching for a reason to make them white saviors. We're supposed to believe Paul, Ian and Nina stood up for Kat when her biggest opposition was Julie, their boss. They and Candice continue to have a relationship with Julie. Candice on-going and continuously positive relationship with Julie plays A LOT into Caroline’s treatment and favoritism in the fandom. It is unfortunate that anyone could receive death threats for a role they’re playing. Respect to Daniel Gillies for defending his costars from continuous hatred which to my knowledge feel free to correct me came from toxic KC stans. In Kat’s case it isn’t the same, no one defended her from the fans who’ve disliked her since day one because she wasn’t white. The hatred that Bonnie/Kat faces wasn’t just from the fans. The writers fed into it. Julie was often the leader fed of it too. Bamon fans were labeled rabid, Bonnie/her fans is insulted by Julie herself. Matt Davis even mocked Kat online. Julie claims she’s never liked Klaroline shippers yet continued to service them since 2010.

The cast of tvd are not heroes. Michael Malarkey even denied that Kat was being mistreated. Who is he to speak on a black woman's experience? this fic is entirely about mike’s trauma and i’ve actually been struggling to balance how much of paul’s trauma to include (considering it’s so similar and mikebriggs cycles narrative foils etc etc you understand). there are lines that Hint at the backstories and the effects of canon events on other characters, but it all varies based on mike’s heavily limited perspective and what i think he realistically wouldn’t or wouldn’t be privy to. a good example of this is this moment from somewhere in the haze:

the context, of course, is charlie seeing mike and thinking of finding whistler dead on the bathroom floor. i thought that this was something briggs knew about and mike didn’t, not sure if that’s actually true in canon but even if not, briggs having been there with charlie when it happened would be able to immediately make that connection and know where charlie’s mind had gone.

of course, the hints in something’s in your eyes are certainly not as heavy-handed, where it is directly pointed out that there is something mike is “on the outskirts of”—the fic is quite literally about secrets. it is also not so easily resolved as this particular example is, where charlie tells mike in the last scene the context for her reaction. many things are instead left unsaid because. y’know. secrets. >:)

the particular example of this i’m thinking of in siye is actually about jakes. goddd there’s this one jakesbriggs moment where…no……i shan’t say. it’s literally the only jb moment in the entire fic and it’s like five words total probably but bitchhhhh u gotta pick up what im putting down!!! the Context… coconut tree etc etc… u gotta Think it’s a Thinker. thinkerbell? i’m tired

For 2024 I have a few wishes for the Jacob Elordi fans:

1. Create your OWN blogs. Yall pop into Austin, Z, and Tom focused blogs, say your insults and leave. If you have your own blog focused on JE you can say whatever (inults and all), quite simple tbh.

2. Im aware Jacob and Olivia have a private relationship but the way almost NONE of his fans mention her name (even casualy) and still focus on his past relationships is wild lol he is with her and him being with a woman with her background is very telling to how he is as well.

3. Z doesnt want Jacob now, I REPEAT Z doesnt want that man lol Jacob doesnt want Z either. If they wanted to be together they couldve lasted or got back together by now but havent. They didnt even last a year lol goes back to point #2 where they dont even mention his current gf bt love to ship him with Z. I guess cuz Joey is officially married they feel lik that shipped has sailed and nobody gave af about him/Kaia, but just cuz Z is THE it girl dont mean she gotta b shipped with him. She has her own mind as does he.

4. People dont care for Jacob becuase of some of his cheating "antics" but more about some of the things he said in interviews-he can come across as pretentious, ungrateful and just arrogant. Im aware he is a multideminsional person, like the rest of us, so that may not be what he is like 24/7. Again goes back to #2 where his fans ignore Olivia or just dont get why hes with her- Jacob is probably ALOT more similar to Olivia than his fans think. People can not care for his personality because a lot of the main headlines where his name is included dont paint him out to b the best, due to his own words.

5. There are enough white men in the industry that can succeed at the same time. Like folks been saying Jacob is a colead, and has seemingly been doing well in those roles tbh. But a lot of the actors his fans are comparing him to- Austin, Timmy or Tom- have done more lead roles. It dont even make sense to compare him to them cuz if they were all nominated for something they would be leads and Jacob would be a supporting. Again, dont even make sense for his fans to pit him against them.

ALL of those other actors have either:

Done lead roles

Been in a huge blockbuster film (in a lead or co-lead role)

Won or been nominated for serious acting awards

Been a box-office draw (as lead)

Right now, JE has done NEITHER of that. So, until he does at least ONE of those aforementioned things, I can't (with a STRAIGHT face) be comparing him to ANY of the actors above.

I watched the movie Resident Evil Degeneration today and I definitely hated the movie because of Leon and Angela. When I saw the scene of their kiss in the water, I was shocked. Many say it is cpr, but it does not seem like cpr to me. Also, throughout the movie, he holds her hand. There is even a scene similar to the scene of Ada and Leon when she fell at the end of re2. At the end of the movie, Angelia said to Leon, “Let’s dive again,” and he said, “I’d love to .” I really hate Capcom

honestly i have a lot of reasons why i write off degeneration as a movie as a whole

objectively, the writing is bad in resident evil but this one is absurdly poor

it's another movie where nothing really happens that's substantial and because it's so easily forgotten, i feel like a lot of the plot can just be ignored in the grand scheme of things

leon's essentially a cardboard cut out that spouts off random lines when things happen

he doesn't have a voice or even any thoughts that aren't things he's said before.

funnily enough i think claire was decent in this movie, too bad it's the only movie she's in that's actually a decent portrayal of her (im very anti stephanie (new's claire's characterization) and find her to be nothing other than a mary sue - self insert. and that they stripped her of all interesting aspects of her character/narrative)

(this is also NOT hate, this is a legitimate critic of her character, and i think that claire stans deserve better than how she's currently portrayed. and at this point it really seems like what claire's va wants is for claire to be fridged at some point in the future to further chris's storyline.)

although this one the only film that did not star matt mercer as leon (not including infinite darkness which was voiced by nick,) and was voiced by paul mercier- he was extremely clearly uncomfortable, or was given poor direction.

i do think he was great as leon in og re4, but something about the movie was so badly voiced

i wasn't sure if it was voiced in japanese at first and he was forced to dub it to the japanese voice flaps? but either way it's really poorly done

we also have to remember that this particular film was also directed/written by someone who was vehemently ANTI aeon, so he forced a "relationship" between leon and angela.

i think the breath of air could either be interpreted as cpr or a kiss, i don't really care tbh. if angela wasn't drowning, then a "kiss" wouldn't have happened. i just think it's a non-issue and it was written in to "enhance leon's flirt status"

i do think that it's funny though that in the damnation bloopers, matt mercer's leon makes a joke about how he forgot about diving with angela lol he said he was gonna call her after but still sdjkfbsjkdf doubtful that ever happened (also i am aware at the bloopers aren't canon lmao)

I couldn’t get through a post about talking about creators in Danonation and/or my friends without mentioning Soph. Not only is she immensely talented, but her ability to shift between writing the sweetest moments and angst is basically unmatched. Shoutout to her for warming me up to the concept of having kids tbh bc wOW I did not see that one coming! She’s also one of my closest friends on here and I would heavily recommend giving her a follow and sending an ask; she’s absolutely precious to me and deserves all the love this community can possibly give her (but that’s just my opinion 🙄).

Now, if we're talking about my friends, I have to drag my wonderful Storm into the conversation as well since we met through Danonation. Storm has a wiiiide range of interests and gifs a lot of different things bUT his gif sets are fucking phenomenal. He hasn't been super active on here lately but I would still recommend dropping him a follow because lmao I am hugely biased (because I love and adore him) and because he's one of the most creative people I know and his work deserves to be seen by as many eyeballs as possible and fully appreciated.

It’s only been for the last few months that I’ve been following Ethan bUT LEMME JUST SAY. I cannot fathom how my dash survived beforehand. I feel like almost everyone in my little circle has read or at least heard of Max’s Edward fic, Disarm. And I can confirm, Disarm is fantastic. But I also adore basically everything else of hers that I’ve read. Max’s interpretation of characters (specifically Eddie and Calvin) just makes my writing brain so happy. She is also incredibly funny, a massively talented artist, and a very lovely person to talk to and I couldn’t imagine this little community without her.

I would also give her content warnings a once over beforehand since they might not be everyone's cup of tea!
