It was a day to end all days, and you just wanted a couch, your blanket, and tea. A grand, glorious cup of tea to escape the hell. The Tower elevator pinged at your floor, and your feet were too heavy to move; you sighed and tried your damndest to move.

"You stuck there, kid?" a voice asked.

Your head moved up to see Bucky staring at you. Another sigh left your lips. You didn't have the energy for him. Nope, not after a long day of hacking away at a computer, trying to find remnants of Hydra.

Instead of responding, you pushed past him towards the kitchen to the kettle, filling it up with water and moving it to the stove. "Cat got your tongue there, cyberpunk?"

"You know what, jackass, I've had enough bullshit for one day and don't need the former Winter Soldier on my ass," you snapped with your back turned. "So unless you are gonna make me damn cuppa, scram."

You clicked on the stove, ignited the pilot light, and turned it high. After doing so, you closed your eyes and tried to calm yourself, tried to take yourself off the ledge.

You felt a push to your hip and tumbled to the counter, your eyes widening in surprise. "What the hell?!" you exclaimed, trying to get your footing.

Your eyes fell on Bucky, who had pushed you away from the stove and now had his back on it. His eyes on you hardened. "Now that's not nice."

"I swear to god, Tin Man, if you keep me away from that kettle, you will wish Hydra killed you," you threatened.

He pointed to himself in mock shock, unmoving. You growled at him, and his eyebrow rose. You tried calculating how to actually move him and came up empty. But he didn't need to know that, "One. Two. Three...."

He just smirked at you, knowing you couldn't move him, and it was just a meaningless threat. You grabbed the plastic fork next to you and threw it at his metal arm.

He bowled over in laughter before composing himself. "Will you just sit down, sugar?"

"I'm definitely not your sugar."

"Do you like sugar?"

You sighed. "What are you getting at?"

He pushed off the stove and turned you around, guiding you to the communal couch. "Will you sit down so I can make you tea," he ordered.

You sat as instructed but arched your own eyebrow. "Do I trust an American to make a cuppa?"

A hand went to his heart, a smirk on his lips. "Lucky for you I've spent some time in Europe."

"Yeah, with the crazies."

He tsked at you. "Maybe I'll microwave water to make your tea."

You hastily stood up, pushing a finger into his chest. "You do that and any chance of continuing this flirty dance you started is dead in the water."

"So we're flirting now...."

You groaned. His flesh hand held your wrist, gently pulling it away, bringing the back of your hand to his lips. You rolled your eyes and smirked after kissing your hand. "So chivalrous."

"You have no idea, sugar. First, I'll woo you with my cuppa skills, and then a Cranachan."

You laughed. "Leave the Cranachan to the Scots and just make me a cuppa."

"Sure, sugar."

He kissed your cheek before turning back to the stove, just in time for the kettle to whistle.

they notice everything about each other. no habit or detail is too small. how kaz takes his coffee (sweeter than you would expect for the bastard of the barrel, though sometimes he drinks it black to keep up appearances). which saints inej names her knives after (kaz has them all memorized). everything.

one of the reasons kaz has a distaste for per haskell's "older muscle" crew is that a fair number of them can be lecherous toward inej. he lets her fight her own battles, but privately he is Not happy. and he remembers every face, of course. he's a crow, after all <3

the first time kaz takes his gloves off in front of inej to wash, they've known each other for about nine months and he is terrified. he's also expecting her to be shocked that they're not claws or scar-covered or any of the other myths, but she's not. she's known for a long time that he is but a man.

they debrief after every job in discussions that can go on for hours. (woe betide anyone who interrupts them.) kaz is relentless in looking for ways to improve, even if the job went off without a hitch, and inej fills in the blind spots he won't admit he has. she often suggests that kaz should just tell his crew his plans, and that might make things go more smoothly. he rejects this every time.

inej is reluctant to buy things for herself because she has trauma around such things being added to her contract, and kaz gives her gifts anonymously. besides the two knives that he's canonically given her, she sometimes wakes up to find a new vest in her closet or a tin of suli coffee from little ravka on her windowsill. kaz justifies this to himself as rewards for jobs well done or replacements for clothing/possessions that get damaged, but let's be real here he wants to do something nice for her. he doesn't do this for anyone else. (when jesper finds out, he gets jealous as hell.) (oh god not another wip idea... i really cannot afford this...)

on a similar note, one of inej's love languages is "this reminds me of you", and before long, she's pointing things out constantly. crow flies past their window? that's kaz. hears a song in a club that kaz once hummed under his breath? she remembers.

"A Ceiling Fan to the Heart": Probably the only fiction piece on this list! While I have some flash fic pieces floating around that will be hard even for me to find here and some flash written off prompts, this is I think the only full short story I have posted to Tumblr, because I specifically wrote it for Tumblr to share with you all.

"Richard Ranasinghe de Vulpian’s Backstory Is Very Queer: An Essay": A meta piece I was honestly turning over for months before I wrote it up for a dear friend's birthday (she's very into meta). I originally wanted to turn this into a proper lit essay with JSTOR sources and such. It didn't quite turn into that, but I think it's a really good read "Richard Ranasinghe de Vulpian's Backstory Is Very Queer: The Aspec Amendment" is exactly what it says on the tin, and basically a tag onto it, so I'm combining these.

"Seigi's Queer Coming of Age": This has a similar backstory to the other one, and it once again just really fun to talk about queer stuff.

"The Man Who Set Himself On Fire to Keep Others Warm": William's motif meta. I'm proud of it, okay?

"The Man Who Goes Through Hell and High Water": Sherlock's motif essay. These were fun to write, even if this one was written while my apartment was flooded.

Much of my ace and aro education stuff was posted as threads on twitter originally...I should see how much of them I can save before Twitter totally implodes. I'm proud of a lot of them, actually, but most of them aren't here on Tumblr right now.

Anyway, stuff that didn't make the cut that I think is also pretty great include:

"No One Tell Sherlock" / "It Doesn't Hurt at First, Does It?": I like this one a lot because I really wrote it trying to incorporate a lot of fiction story-telling techniques in it to really amp up the emotional punch instead of just being purely analytic. It could probably use a good edit, but it's fun.

God, I was just looking at the "Marr's Favorites" list to pick and choose, and they're all really good and I love all of them. If you're into YuuMori meta, go read those and gimme feedback lol.

i’m really into old hollywood stuff so did u know that when they filmed the wizard of oz, the tin costume was so heavy that the actor who played tin man, had a stick they had to prop him up with to “rest” because he couldn’t actually sit in the costume? it was called a leaning board, and it was commonly used to prevent the wrinkling of costumes. it just sucked for the tin man cause that shit was heavy as fuck. lmao

Why are rain frogs so round? What's /inside/ of them around such an itty bitty skeleton?

So it turns out this is a really interesting question.

The first thing we must be aware of is that rainfrogs as we see them in videos of them squeaking are not quite the same shape as they are when at rest:

But you are quite right, they are very round. This is exemplified by the skeletal photo you refer to:

So what are we seeing?

Well, firstly, note that the body cavity in these frogs actually envelops the femurs, such that only the tibiofibula (fused in frogs) and the tarsals and metatarsals are outside the body. The arms are quite similarly enveloped, but a bit of the humerus does extend outside the body cavity too. This predisposes them to a rounder body shape.

Next, note the ilia - the U-shaped bone in the pelvic region. These in some breviceptid frogs are synostotically fused with the sacrum - that is to say, they are bound by bone-based connections to the bow-shaped vertebra at their tips. This whole joint seems to be quite smooth, and as a consequence, the back of the frog is quite smooth. The other thing we can see here is that the urostyle (i.e. the frog version of a coccyx) juts quite far beyond the ischium and pubis. This extends the body cavity beyond the hips. Note also that the pelvic girdle seems to be largely below the spine, rather than the typical position for frogs behind it and continuous with it. This makes the legs sit below the spine, rather than at its end, enhnacing the vertical roundness of the animal.

Next, let’s talk some soft tissue. Now, I’m not as familiar with soft-tissue in frogs as I am their skeletons, so you’ll have to bear with me a bit (rawr). Beddard (1908!!) studied the soft tissue of Breviceps verrucosus Rapp 1842. It seems that the majority of the body of these frogs is actually muscle. Beddard noted that muscles join the leg at the knee that extend into the body cavity, such that the inclusion of the thigh in the body cavity is further accentuated by musculature. The rectus abdominalis muscle is unusually large, extending from the lower abdomen up and around the sides of the body. Indeed, this large size appears to be the pattern with all of the major muscles, though in the throat the typical arrangement of large and small muscles is somewhat reversed. On the lateral side of the head, there is a substance that is not muscle, but appears to be loose tissue in which sits what is apparently the thymus gland.

There is a very large gap between the end of the urostyle and the anus (one fifth of the total length of the frog), in which there are almost no muscles, save for the one surrounding the lower cloaca. On either side of this area, between the posterior-most muscles of the thigh, lie two large ‘lymph-hearts’, as described by Beddard. These are between one quarter and one third of the total length of the frog. A further lypmh-sac sits between these lymph-hearts and the skin of the femoral region, and they are thus probably analogous to the femoral lymph-sacs of other frogs.

I find it interesting that Beddard (1908) did not mention any glandular formations in the dorsal region. As is evidence from many images (see below), these frogs are able to secrete a white, sticky, noxious substance from their skin (which they actually have to use during amplexus, as the male is too small relative to the female to mount her properly, and so he sticks himself to her with his glandular glue… kinky).

These glands do not apparently take up a great deal of the cutaneous tissue, and so I suppose are of no consequence to the size of the frog, especially relative to its enormous muscles.

The diet of these frogs consists almost exclusively of hymenopterans and isopterans (ants and termites). Neither of these insect groups are particularly fatty, so it is little surprise that their bodies appear to contain no large fat deposits - fatty bodies extend from the gonads up to the lungs and heart, but these comprise only a tiny fraction of the frog’s mass, and don’t contribute to the round shape. Instead, their bodies are extremely muscular, allowing them to be adept burrowers, ideal for their fossorial lifestyle.

So TL;DR: rain frogs are little balls of muscle (maybe the largest muscle mass relative to body mass of any vertebrate? science just doesn’t know).

Fuck it I’m being mad about my character in public because doing it privately isn’t doing it for me.

I’ve got this oath of devotion paladin, right? born and raised in a temple, from a militaristic society, who found and resurrected an ancient sun deity. He is/was fully meant to be a Jesian figure for this reawakened god and the derivative cults that have popped up in the intervening centuries and THAT is going well, actually. We’re play curse of strahd, so we’re stuck in Barovia and it’s miserable and sad but there are plenty of opportunities for MY sunboi to bond with the local priests sunbois and reawaken faith in the public as we work forward through the Actual Module Stuff. I am genuinely having a great time with that, it’s fantastic to be so included in the Plot. (thank you for my life, miss dm, ily) But the ISSUE I’m having is with my plan for Character Conflict. I wasn’t THINKING when I made him that my actual friendships dissolving and that other pc’s might have full alignment-flipping mental breakdowns (v cool tho, I am loving watching her lose herself to the mounting trauma) beCAUSE I intended for his personal growth to be about Doubting Himself and Finding Himself As He Was Always Meant To Be (with heavy religious overtones) but!!!! Those elements don’t WORK if he’s in the corner crying other having to kill innocent people and mercy killing an ANGEL with only the NPCs to comfort him, y’know?  It doesn’t work because the dm can’t be the only person to interact with me, but if the party isn’t going to actually comment or comfort him or even Take Note of the Breakdown, then I’m just babbling to myself and he can have these revelations silently. Like it’s wonderful to talk to all the NPCs and have emotional moments with them, playing across from my bestie, but it’s not Going Well with the rest of us.  Lemme lay the scene: Imrath (Dragonborn, Paladin, my PC) is closest with Wixen (Dusk Elf, Barbarian/Cleric, Shifter, Glen’s PC) but Wixen has an active curse on her soul that switched her from Good to Evil, so she is being appropriately cagey and chaotic about who and what she cares about. It’s sad, but in character, and they talk about it often enough to stay friends.

Now, we have a new player, who I do like very much but don’t know well. Rest assured none of these comments are about them.  BUT ASH (Fire Genasi, Rogue, F’s PC) man I’m so disappointed. Not in the character. The CHARACTER is delightful and has depth and drama and would make such a FUN foil for Imrath to learn from and bounce off of as he moves from Lawful Good to Lawful Neutral but my FRIEND. My friend is not INTERESTED in the game anymore. They don’t talk, don’t get to know any NPCs, don’t even really bullshit with us anymore and it’s fuckin affecting me man. 

I just. I’m really disappointed. And maybe I need to modify my own characters goals to be more independent but I already chose my class last, chose paladin to balance our party (and to fight the Fucking Vampires), keep the notes for the game, do a LOT of the chatting, and make efforts not to derail the game too badly and I’m TIRED of my beloved character being pigeon-holed into the role of a charismatic diplomatic public speaker when he is MEANT to be niave, affectionate city boy fresh out of a military tin can.

I love your wicked au because I always wondered why Dorothy the scarecrow the tin man and the cowardly lion started to travel together and how there journey went.

Also if Glinda where to show up would she recognize fiyero. I understand boq not recognizing him but glinda is another matter.

I think there's a good chance Glinda could recognize Fiyero if she looked close enough/hard enough, but to be fair she's incredibly distracted by the fact that her very best friend just freaking died. So suffice to say, she's pretty upset with Dorothy and Co. and probably just wants them gone, because, again, she has no reason to even suspect that the walking talking scarecrow is her ex-fiance.

And you can bet Fiyero's sweating bullets and trying to hide behind Boq/be as inconspicuous as possible whenever Glinda's around XD
