It's December 20th, 🫶 International Human Solidarity Day. On this day in 2002, the United Nations established the World Solidarity Fund for the eradication of poverty and the promotion of human and social development in developing countries – especially among their poorest people. To strengthen the world's resolve to eradicate poverty, the UN decided to commemorate the creation of the World Solidarity Fund by celebrating International Human Solidarity Day on this day every year.

Solidarity is identified in the UN's Millennium Declaration as one of the fundamental values of international relations in the 21st Century – that those who suffer the most or benefit the least in this world deserve help from those who benefit the most. In the context of increasing globalization and its resultant growing inequality, it's becoming more and more important to strengthen international solidarity to promote a culture of sharing and giving.

On this day, let's all celebrate our diverse racial, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, political, and religious backgrounds and dedicate ourselves to work in unity with each other as we struggle to solve the great problems facing us today, tomorrow, and beyond. ☮️ Peace… Jamiese of Pixoplanet

Margaret Beale Spencer is a black American psychologist who focuses her theories on ethnicity, gender, and adolescent development. She is the Marshall Field IV Professor of Urban Education in the Department of Comparative Human Development. Its main goal is to recognize the universal value of solidarity by making member states aware of global objectives and initiatives to reduce poverty and to formulate and share poverty reduction strategies of independent nations around the world. IHSD is promoted by the World Solidarity Fund and United Nations Development Programme, which are focused on achieving goals set for worldwide poverty eradication. An individual can participate or celebrate the day either by contributing to education or helping the poor or physically or mentally disabled. Governments are instead encouraged to respond to poverty and other social barriers through the Sustainable Development Goals.

Significant Contribution of Dr. Kilioni Temo Waqanivalu to Non-Communicable Disease

Conditions or diseases that are not contagious are called non-communicable diseases (NCDs). These conditions, which can affect people of any age, are long-lasting and usually progress slowly due to a number of different causal factors, including genetics, the environment, and even one's own habits. Most deaths and illnesses are caused by four main diseases: chronic respiratory disorders such as chronic obstructive lung disease and asthma; cardiovascular diseases such as heart disease and stroke; cancer; and diabetes.  

When it comes to healthcare on a worldwide scale, Dr. Kilioni Temo Waqanivalu is at the forefront of innovation and excellence. His impact on healthcare, education, and policymaking is still felt today, thanks to his long and successful career. His career has been marked by remarkable achievements and contributions that have impacted healthcare systems around the world because he is a determined and thorough professional.  

In March 1969, Dr. Waqanivalu was born in the lovely island of Lakeba, Fiji where he also received his primary education in the village school of Waciwaci District School before moving for secondary & tertiary education in the capital city of Suva. A graduate of the Fiji School of Medicine, he also pursued more education and earned a Master of Public Health from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and honorary Fellowship of Faculty of Public Health with the Royal College of Physicians UK, adding to his already impressive medical credentials. His unyielding commitment to making a difference propelled him to the forefront of healthcare leadership on a global scale. 

About Integrated Service Delivery (IHSD)  

With the adoption of IHSD in 2016 by the World Health Assembly, it has gained worldwide recognition as a critical part of universal health coverage. The World Health Organization (WHO) has taken the lead on IHSDs, establishing dedicated teams to take on the complex problems posed by NCDs. For this Dr. Kilioni Temo Waqanivalu created the new Integrated Service Delivery Unit and served as head in the NCD Department at WHO HQ in Geneva, CH 2020, to guarantee the maintenance and improvement of services. He advocated for and received financing for the first-ever guidelines on integrating NCDs into health systems, which was completed in 2022 and was being initiated for use in five countries, reaching tens of millions of people.  

In the role he established the global thought leadership platform of NCD Hard Talks that gained a regular attendance of 500–700 global participants each month for discussion and debate on evidence, innovation and best practises to support countries in attaining the global NCD target of 33% relative reduction in NCD mortality by 30% by 2030. He also developed three capacity-building resource package for healthcare professionals, including technical, leadership, communication, and mobilization, and conducted training in various countries to make health workers NCD-ready, a term coined by the unit that expresses health workers appropriately skilled in the prevention and management of NCDs.  

Global Advocacy and Resource Mobilization  

Dr. Kilioni Temo Waqanivalu has been a passionate advocate of prevention and control of NCD at the global level. He initiated and established the first International group of heads of state and government on NCD and developed the Global NCD Compact consisting of 5 commitments and 5 actions for the group to implement to help their countries and the world deliver on the SDG 3.4 of reducing the NCD deaths by 33% by 2030. Seven such leaders participated in the group's inaugural meeting and pledge action in 2022 and subsequently annual meetings at the precincts of the annual UN General Assembly meetings. He has also been instrumental in mobilizing resources that countries need to scale up their response to NCD. Through strategic and program planning he helped mobilize the allocation of 158 million euros through WHO for 116 countries, the majority of which are members of the African, Caribbean, and Pacific Group of States.  

Program `Walk the Talk` for a Healthy Way of Life  

WHO recommends early interventions and cooperation with numerous stakeholders to effectively reduce the growing burden of NCDs. To regulate NCDs, it also emphasizes the importance of taking into account social, political, and economic systems as well as other crucial elements like behavior change. In this regard, Kilioni Temo Waqanivalu, Team Lead, Diet and Physical Activity at Prevention of NCD, WHO Headquarters, Geneva, CH 2014-19, has been instrumental. He kept track of every aspect of nutrition and exercise, and he supported international leadership to fight against NCDs.  

The first Global Physical Activity Guidelines was co-created by Dr. Kilioni Temo Waqanivalu, who also pioneered the first international taxation guidelines for beverages with added sugar and technical package for reduction of consumption of salt. In his role he also founded and led the famous `Walk the Talk` program for healthy living which thrives on the ethos of integrity with WHO embodying the very advise it provides the world, which reached up to 17,000 staff members worldwide and expanded to the broader public in many countries.   

Awards and Recognitions  

Dr. Kilioni Temo Waqanivalu got his first award in 2004, the “Promising Medical Officer Public Health Award” from the Ministry of Health, Fiji. His second award was the “Public Health Award of Excellence” which he got in 2005 from the Ministry of Health in Fiji. His third award was the “WHO Western Pacific Regional Director Annual Promotion” in 2009. In 2016, he got his fourth award “WHO Deputy Director-General`s Reward for Excellence”.

The new web design includes a revamp of their current content along with microsite news and information pages for 11 locations. Our design team built animated SVG files to help keep the site mobile friendly and  make use of the colorful vector shapes Stitzlein Studio created.
