Iceland 2/2-2/5
Icelandia! My boyfriend, Owen, and I decided to meet up in Iceland this weekend, and boy was it cold. We knew it was gonna be cold, and we were underprepared, but we said why not! Neither of us had a real winter coat, so layers, layers, and more layers. Oh! And we came in the middle of a giant snow storm.
We flew together Friday morning, and made it to Reykjavik soon after. Our plan was to walk around, but since we came right from the plane and didn't have our layers on, we didn't last long. We saw the Hallgrimskirkja and got lunch downtown. Then we went to our hotel, unpacked, layered up! We got some pizza and went to the bus stop for our northern lights tour. But as we were standing there, a tiny bus pulled up and said they cancelled it...

The next morning, we got breakfast really early and headed to the bus stop again. This time, for a tour of the South Coast. The bus stop was very chaotic, but we eventually made it on. Our first stop was Skogafoss, which was a huge, beautiful waterfall. We were both so in awe of it. Then, we went to Solheimajokull Glacier, which was breathtaking. We had to walk along this tiny, snow covered path for about 15 minutes, and I was so scared I was gonna fall right off. There was no ropes, and to the left was just a giant drop and the snow was so slippery, but we made it, so that's all the mattered. The glacier was huge, and there were little chunks left behind from when it slowly has moved over the years. The glacier itself was a really cool hue of blue with black streaks in it from when it rubs against rocks. The walk back to the bus was even worse though, because we had to walk on the tiny path again but the snow and wind were so powerful, we couldn't see a thing. Our next stop was Reynisfjara Beach, which is a black sand beach. At this point, Owen and I were really starting to get cold, but the view was so amazing here. The waves on this beach were the highest I've ever seen, the sand felt like kinetic sand, and the white snow against the black sand was just so worth it. Lastly on this trip, we stopped in Rangarping eyestra, which had 2 waterfalls. One of these you could usually walk behind, but because of the weather we couldn't. The other waterfall was in this cave that you could peer through.

After our tour was over, we had to get straight on another bus for our makeup northern lights tour. It was very meh because we were exhausted, cold, and knew we weren't gonna see them because of the weather. But we still made the most of it. Our bus couldn't go to a lot of places, and there were clouds the whole time, but I could see some of the stars which was cool atleast.

Sunday, we went to the blue lagoon. It was so nice to relax after the day before, and the water was so warm and nice. We got free face masks included and a free drink which was nice. But someone stole my $2 old navy flipflops.... so I'm praying I don't get a foot fungus. The lagoon was hugeeeee and since the air was so cold, you couldn't see more than 3 feet in front of you because of the steam.
Tumblr media
When we got back, we walked around a little more, got dinner, and packed, because we had to leave at 3am to make the journey home. We walked 30 min to the bus station, then took an hour bus to the airport, and then I waited there for 4 hours because Owen's flight was 2 hours earlier than mine. My plane was then delayed for an hour of course, which made me nervous because I had a 2 hour layover in Manchester. When we landed, some lady started fighting with the flight attendant, and had the police called on her. Then, she ran out of the back of the plane and started running around the tarmac. I eventually made it on my flight to Rome and all was good.

Is Iceland the Tip of a Vast Lost Continent?
Is Iceland the Tip of a Vast Lost Continent?
A vast sunken continent called “Icelandia” may exist under the North Atlantic Ocean, a finding that, if proven, could upend long-standing assumptions about the region’s geological history and inform the search for other submerged continents around the globe. The proposed continent is estimated to extend for at least 230,000 square miles, reaching Greenland to the north and potentially Europe to…

UNDER THE RADAR: FEBRUARY 2021
Tumblr media
February’s Under the Radar is as much about loss as it is love, courtesy of songs from ICELANDIA, glimmers, Haley K Turner, Laterdays, Lucky Monkey, and Alicia Clara.
1) glimmers (feat. lostbody) - “Not Good At Goodbyes”
I feel as if pop rock is making a comeback, and glimmers could be one of the acts to revitalize the Vans Warped Tour era. The Atlanta band (fronted by Maggie Schneider) channels their best in the radio-friendly anthem – a confession of love and letting go, from the perspective of a hopeless romantic. Taking listeners back to the punch and sentiment of We Are The In Crowd and Hey Monday, it’s a track that wanders through the clutter; on the verge of another separation, but with full, grueling disclose.
Why the universe gives us love, to pull it away once it runs its course, is a question left unanswered. “Not Good At Goodbyes” airs out the bittersweet, a valiant pushback to what often goes unsaid. Worlds Apart is out April 23rd on Common Ground Collective.

2) Laterdays - “Losing Touch”
Former pop punk pals turned surf rock beach boys, Laterdays is feeling low and lost in disconnect. Nik Pang and James Songalia form the bright new band – their latest holds tight to a deteriorating relationship, matter of a fact speech about an anomaly that puts them on a brink. It has an earnest, unhurried vibe that keeps the ear interested, and breezy guitar lines for a mid-afternoon sway. I love that it doesn’t write-off the problem, and without addressing it in specifics, it centers on the narrator’s feelings coupled with boundaries, and verbal interaction. It’s as much about communication, as it is about love.
Sometimes it’s the tracks that focus on distance, that feel the most close to heart.

3) ICELANDIA - “Video Game”
On “Video Game,” Kelowna synth pop trio ICELANDIA ruminate on remorse—a bruised history that repeats itself despite one’s best attempts at reinvention.
Anthony Martens’ vocals are part dream and part metaphor, washed into crystalline synth and warm, slow morning strings. The song hits a pretty damning revelation in the bridge before pacing beautifully into cello, courtesy of Dutch multi-instrumentalist Ardie Son. “Video Game” is bright and bittersweet; the rustling of leaves, and old photo albums, before giving oneself to grief.

4) Haley K Turner - “Alice”
“The Kool-Aid they, they’ve been selling / Can’t you see the imagery / and what is lurking underneath.”
I just love that this was inspired by Alice in Wonderland; it has the whimsy sound of mystery and wonder, social convention playing its part through storytelling. It borders between naïve innocence and action, the social awareness that we either seek or stay quiet to. The critique is striking – being ostracized and facing pressure from others can force rash decisions, ones with outcomes we too feared. It’s a justice that can only come in numbers, voices that speak and ask together. In sound, it has a brisk contemporary pop/indie folk aura, down the dark rabbit hole we go.
“Alice” is emboldened; don’t fall into a trap without the knowledge you need, our rights are ours to keep.

5) Lucky Monkey - “Mirror Man”
The new single from Kelowna-based rock outfit Lucky Monkey is a 90s-style throwback that features the band's special blend of funky, rhythm-driven rock. "Mirror Man” is reminiscent of grunge-era groups like Extreme, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains – especially in regard to vocal styling. The verses have a solid groove and the chorus is catchy with its soaring vocal hook. A display of the band's musicianship and talent, this track will definitely satisfy the 30-something dad rock crowd looking for something new to add to their rock playlists.

6) Alicia Clara - “Stones Like Eyes”
There is a hypnotic quality to “Stones Like Eyes” that feels out of the 80′s; talk of the ‘good old days’ and somewhat stoic to the revelation that happy endings—they’re not assured. Ethereal and sophisticated, Clara’s (Montreal) warm sonic sound is the personification of a kindred spirit. It carries the broken shards of our innocence, hopes and fears, a small part to play in a larger universe that we will never fully understand.
“Stones Like Eyes” is evocative, sun-kissed dance pop, save for a bit of pessimism to keep it real. Outsider/Unusual is out now on Hot Tramp Records.

Recently, I was approached by Kaspars Bekeris, a former TV reporter and journalist in his native Latvia, who has spent a good part of the past year photographing and documenting the drag scene in Iceland. While other photographers have focused on the interactions between the artists and the audience, Bekeris has been more interested in telling the story of the relationship between the performers and their art. What follows is my conversation with three of the performers Bekeris documented.”
~ from, "We Were All Women in the Womb: Icelandic Drag Performers On Feminism and Free Expression"
"As a boy, I was cast as a tree in the school play, boys were trees and girls were flowers. I wanted to be a flower, the part was more interesting, so I was a flower."
~ Deff Starr, Icelandic Drag Queen, interviewed in Combustus: "We Were All Women in the Womb: Icelandic Drag Performers on Feminism and Free Expression"
