#IC: Basara

A sigh falls from Basara's lips as he wipes a splotch of grease from his forehead. That last battle left his Valkyrie banged up worse than a dog's chew toy; he's done his best to clean up around the edges, but he's not going to be done any time soon, and all the engineers that can be spared seem to be preoccupied fixing up everyone else's machines.

At a loss for any other way to speed things up, he decides that it's time to do just the opposite: sit back and mope. He's a musician, not a technician! What's the big idea, leaving this mess all to him...?

"Not even gonna buff out the scratches at this rate..."

"Late enough, I guess. Think just about everyone else already called it quits." Save her, of course... not that he really expected anything less. Honestly, sometimes he thinks she sleeps less than he does after one of his writing sessions--and that's saying something!

"What's got you all tied up over here, anyway?"

It's not like he assumes it's anything he'd be interested in; one look at the formulas on her blueprints is enough to tell him he definitely wouldn't understand a word of it. Still, he might as well ask.

[DRINK] - sender sets something to drink down in front of receiver.

It's a bottle of lemonade.

"You look like you're about to pass out over here, sweating like that. Take this, it's cold."

Prone to overworking—well, it's not like she means to do so, it just happens! She's looking somewhat pale right next to her worktable, blueprints scattered all over it and then some…

It isn't until Basara comes along (startling her in the process, which isn't a big accomplishment in itself), that Melissa finally looks up.

"Ah," right on cue, instinctively, she takes the bottle and looks at it like some kind of foreign item. "Thank you… what time is it…?"

I want to start by saying... this won't be the final addition to the God AU.

I realized that I forgot an important character: Hanna, Bashara's sister!

She's essential to the plot in Quaddrive and Quadstrike, so I’d feel bad if I left her out - I’m sorry!

So let’s just call this… the second to last addition to the God AU.

Here’s Bashara!

Bashara is the God of Ice. As the patron of bitter temperatures, he can be incredibly cold in personality, especially towards those who rub him the wrong way. Though like ice can be soft in the form of snowflakes, he also has an empathetic side and has been known to extend his favor towards those he sympathizes with.

He created the various winter wonderlands of the Earth to his liking, and is the protector of every species that call those wonderlands their home. Though he feels that others deserve to bask in the beauty of his creation, so for a few months each year, he extends the reaches of his wonderland to cover certain areas of the world, resulting in what we call winter. However, there are areas where his ice can’t last for long in the sunlight, so he prefers to stay away from those places; as a result of that, those areas are warm and dry all year long.

(I needed a God of Ice, okay? Everything else was taken.)

Anyways, what do you think of God Bashara?

And after Hanna, it really will be the end of the God AU. She’s going to be a little helper in her brother’s wonderland!

A throwback to the postcard art I made for the YOI Pride zine :D

Victor and Yuuri's outfits are both a nod to their duet costumes palette and are loosely inspired by the Hyoen Basara and Moonlight: Tale Of Genji ice shows Heian fantasy-flavoured skating costumes (said shows featured both Stephane Lambiel, Daisuke Takahashi and Yulia Lipnitskaya among their main stars btw ;3 ).

I have fond memories of this zine project, no least thanks to our head mod Jie @makkareads and Zen @zen-draws for their relentleless work, beautiful packaging and eyepopping graphics. Modding can be such a thankless job and they delivered again and again. Whether as contributor or as mod I'm so lucky and thankful I got to share so much YOI fandom time and work with them.

How rude! She should have given her heroine & idol a more proper form of greeting. In an instant, her knees dropped & her upper half followed soon after; with her head bowed so deeply, her forehead would almost be touching the floor in a dogeza pose. All done under a deep respect & reverence to the senior onna-musha.

"Lady Tomoe, i-it is a huge honor for me of meeting you... I'm an Archer-class servant and my true name is Tsuruhime, b-but you can simply call me 'Tsuru'...!" She even stuttered a little while trying to form a coherent sentence, bringing embarrassment to herself... how shameful.

"I... I grew up listening to stories about your feats in the battlefield and you have been a huge inspiration to me ever since!" The stories that her parents told about Tomoe Gozen were practically bedtime stories to her as a child, she couldn't help it. "Meeting you here in Chaldea is like a blessing from the gods... w-would you take me as a student under your wing, my lady...?" She honestly didn't know what's gotten into her either, now.

Anon, thank you for this question because it made us sit down and actually look through the albums of my old art and write a list LOL We thought it’d take like 30 minutes tops + 10 minutes to write all of this down, but it took 2+ hours yikes… So sorry, no other replies today :(

Some of them were just very brief phases when we watched/rewatched something, I drew like 5 sketches for this thing and we moved on after about a week. But it was still prominent enough for us to feel like “Oh right, Ryu was drawing (this) back then”. Damn, 2013-2016 were insane, we were jumping around so much… When did these people have time to watch and draw so much shit??

maybe i just haven't looked through everything about Birds of Prey but what classes are utilized in this fangame? like it feels like each Fire Emblem game has a different selection of classes, or even variants of classes, or even based on game different weapons for the same classes! so like is it based on a specific game for what classes are there, is it a mixture, is Mod Goldmary making shit up(also a fun option), or some secret fourth thing im unaware of? also that is a lot of mages but i am not complaining because i like mages, but maybe add an archer if you haven't already cause archers are cool also feel free to go on a tangent about Birds of Prey even outside of just classes because as somebody who makes au stuff myself, and frankly i really need to start posting my shit to my actual blog, i know a lot of thought can go into the classes and how they would differ and that sort of fun stuff, that sorta thing is an entire rabbit hole for both au versions of existing characters and for ocs (side note im not signing it off as the anon name because it isn't talking about the au, but hey you listen to me blab about my silly au of making Naesala into a Lord so only fair i listen to your ideas too, especially since i personally would like to know more context to this Birds of Prey thing)

The classes are all pretty normal and their promotions are mostly what you would expect tbh. idk what else to say here. We have Spellspear (basara but renamed) as the only kinda odd thing here i guess? oh and Pegasus, Wyvern and Troubadour have only one possible promotion.

Also 10 magic users feels less like 10 units all competing for the exact same role and more like 3 groups of units competing for separate roles thanks to the changes i did for the magic types.

Dark Mages are designed to fight from a distance with the ability to summon additional units and being the only magic type with siege tomes. Also one spell applies Poison so add that to the war crimes bingo!

Conversely, Light Mages are supposed to be on the front lines and have a variety of spells that increase their own defences, recover hp, or grant damage bonuses on enemy phase. Oh and it also absorbed the fire and thunder from anima. If Yvette wants to grill a wyvern steak then i should let her tbh.

Anima mages stay pretty similar and just have a wide variety of ways to do damage through effectiveness, weapon triangle manipulation, brave effects, high might spells, high crit spells, guaranteed hits, physical damage, completely ignoring res and probably a few more. Wind also isn't all alone as its joined by water, ice and earth! MC is about to bury your ass alive while Alastor drowns your entire family <3

So while they all want high magic, their overall playstyles are very different :) In addition, no class has access to multiple magic types.

Also, just because a character can make a decent magic user, that doesn't mean its their best choice: Mary would prefer promoting into Battle Medic instead of Sage as her magic growth is pretty low compared to her competition and Battle Medic allows her to continue to use her decent strength, have weapon triangle advantage over a solid 40% of enemies, have no weapon triangle disadvantage (fists are really good), and grants her a really powerful supportive abilities, not to mention her ability to reclass into wyvern. Meanwhile, Hewe (might change his name) will probably prefer to stay in pegasus rider and zap enemies with a Levin Sword.

I already have 2 dedicated bow users, but there's room for more :)

And yes, Valstyr's dragon form has feathers :)

A thumping metal heartbeat sets an unsteady rhythm as a fire-red titan of steel lies trapped between fallen rivets and frayed wire large enough to barely fit in the giant robot's hands. Within its chassis, the buzzing tone of a bugged-out radio wave echoes from the center console of its cockpit. The pilot lies still, spiked-up hair drooped over his forehead, caked in sweat. A dented flying V guitar lies flat in his lap. Both pilot and Valkyrie, both equally battle-worn, were at least not so worse for wear as the environment of the wreckage-strewn corridor around them. Rubble topples from an exposed ceiling panel as a thunderous quake ripples through the devastated station. The unmistakable sound of explosions echo again and again in the distance like the repetitive beat of the drums of war. Faintly, in the undercurrent of the merciless soundscape, a crowd roars. Unintelligibly at first, but as the static loop of the radio circuit begins to drown out all other sounds, he hears it clear;

". . . Ba-

. sa-. .

ra. . ."

The pilot stirs, his numbed-out index finger twitching to life.

"Ba... sa ra..."

It's louder this time. The drums sound more coordinated, and his foot starts tapping along to the beat.

"Ba-sa-ra. Ba-sa-ra. Ba-sa-ra. Ba-sa-ra."

The call of the crowd meets his ears as he steps forward onto the stage. Spotlights beam down on him, bright enough to force his eyes into a squint. But he doesn't take his eyes of his audience for a second. They've all come here to see them play, to hear Fire Bomber! He can't disappoint them now, can he? Not after they've come this far.

"Basara! Basara! Basara!"

"How ya' feeling, EVERYBODY?!" Nekki Basara cries out to them, raising a single fist to the sky. The roar of the crowd erupts into a chorus of voices like rogue waves crashing against a rocky cliff. Boom, boom, boom from behind--Veffidas putting down a drum beat with the ferocity of a brawl. Ray's keytar fills the air with a cool synth rhythm while Mylene's bass fires up a deep, pounding riff.

"Alright, let's get started! FIRE!!"

"Basara?" A voice calls from behind, but he's focused forward, getting fired up with the fans.

"Basara." It calls again. His brow twitches.

"Basara!"

"Oh, come on! What's wrong, we're just about to get starte-" A flash cuts through his vision, throwing him out from his fevered dream and back into reality. As a burst of flame roars into the corridor, Basara's eyes burst open in a fury. He barely has time to get his bearings before another quake rocks his Valkyrie's chassis inside and out.

The radio in his forward console chirps out a scratchy query, "Ba..s...? Ba...sara? Are y.... re.....ng th...s? Wha.... y..... ....atus?"

The rockstar swipes his bangs from his eyes as he sluggishly reaches for his machine's controls.

".....ara? Co..... ..n Basa....a. Ba....sar...a!"

"Yeah, yeah, keep your pants on. I heard ya' already," he says, pulling his guitar to his chest. His Valkyrie reaches forward and pries itself free from the cage of wreckage that had collapsed around it before pulling itself to its feet. With a burst from the rear verniers, Basara accelerates into a veritable maze of crooked metal. The fire that burst out before has died, quickly, and judging from the fact that his machine's feet haven't touched ground since he got up must mean that space shouldn't be all that far away. A few more halls of twisted metal pass before he comes face to face with a pitch-black hole filled with a dim glimmer of light reflected off free-floating debris.

There we go. With a burst of speed, Basara and his Valkyrie clear the opening and come to a stop against the surface of an adjacent wall that seemed to have been blown clear from the ship it was probably just inside. He looks up and sure enough, there it is. As busted-up as a wreck could be, the carrier he just left floats past a solemn view of a blue planet awash with distant explosions, still falling apart before his eyes. It's an ugly sight. A sigh passes through his lips--what a waste of life...

"I've got a reading again!" Chimes the voice of a young woman across the radio. "Captain, it's Basara! We've found him again!"

Found him again? He wasn't aware he was lost. Then again, he did only just wake up. Wait... how long was he out for, again? Before he can rake his brain for an answer, the image of a familiar face flashes up on a side screen by his controls. An old man with greying hair and a pair of distinctive black shades worn under a helmet's visor.

"Basara!" Maximilian Jenius exclaims, his voice deep and commanding as ever. "We've been trying to contact you for half an hour! What happened?"

Half an hour? Sheesh. Talk about a power nap...

"I don't know. I just woke up a second ago... ship I was on got blown to smithereens, from the looks of it."

Max frowns and shakes his head. "I was afraid of that..." The stress of battle seems to have taken its toll on old Max. His face has been drawn into a half scowl from the moment he showed up on screen. It seems to soften as he looks back up at Basara, however. He might be trying to force a smile, but if so, he isn't doing a very good job. Not that he can blame him. "It's good to see you're alright."

Basara wipes a bit of sweat from his cheek, putting on a strong face of his own (and doing a considerably better job of it.) "Don't worry so much, old man. Just got the wind knocked out of me is all."

Seeing Basara in such a spirited mood gives Max the energy to chuckle. How about that? If he didn't know any better, he'd say the rockstar's thick-headedness was starting to grow on him. "Glad to hear it. Now, that's enough chatter. I need you back here, ASAP. We're regrouping around Lagrange point L1, but Delta Flight has been cut off. I'm moving in to support, and I want you as backup."

A grin flashes across Basara's lips. "You mean you need me to bring the show to you? Didn't think you were that big of a fan, gramps!"

"Take this seriously, Basara. Walkure has already pulled back. That means we need to rely on your songs for support," Max says.

"Walkure, huh?" The rocker says. "Shame. I'm not great at doing second-fiddle, but I wouldn't mind singing along with them sometime!"

The captain smirks. "I could arrange that. After you start following orders, that is."

"Tch..." Not the most innacurate dig he's ever been given--but in his defense, he works a lot better when he just goes with the flow, anyway.

"Don't worry, Delta Flight and I won't be your only audience for this one. Or did you think I was going alone...?" Max asks, Basara arcing his brow in response. Just then, a few other fresh faces flash across his screen.

"ALRIGHT! A battle between robots just wouldn't be complete without the right music! I'm getting pumped up just thinking about it!" Says a young, silver-haired boy whose eyes almost seem to twinkle like stars at the prospect of a real battle between mechs; Ernesti Echevalier, the boy from another world.

"Indeed. I'm eager to hear your songs as well, Nekki Basara! Charging into the fray with a song at our backs... I couldn't think of a better way for a warrior to enter battle!" Says a blonde pilot with a half-scarred face and an ecstatic grin just about as wide; Major Graham Aker of Solbraves.

"Not the worst motivator I've ever heard of. Shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth, though, right? I'll be glad to have you with us too, Basara." Says a man with a scar over one eye and a robotic prosthetic replacing one arm; Kincaid Nau, a space pirate from the Crossbone Vanguard.

"Hah... you're really throwing together a party, huh, gramps?" Basara laughs. "Not a bad bunch we've got here... alright, then! Hope you're all ready..." Basara gives his guitar one quick, preparatory strum. It howls out a pleasant tone in return. "...This one's gonna knock your socks off!"

His signature red Valkyrie rockets off the loose wall, kicking it away into the darkness as his machine shrinks away into the backdrop of Earth against the black, ominous void surrounding it; a single bright, shining light in a starless sky.

"LISTEN TO MY SONG!"

What I really want is Shoma to be casted in Daisuke's ice show HYOEN! The show always have interesting themes and staging and incredible costumes, from the Kabuki-hybrid "Basara" and "The Tale of Genji", and then during the pandemic they took inspiration from Cabaret and Takarazuka for "LUXE". Unfortunately this year they will not have a Japanese folklore theme but they will adapt the novel "Night on the Galactic Railroad" by Kenji Miyazawa. Aside from the interesting stories, one of my favorite things to see is when an all-star cast come together to present a story, and in HYOEN Daisuke invites a lot of the skaters and their characters have their own highlight moments. Similar to OPOI but with more mature stories to adapt.

I wouldn't be surprised if in the future Shoma will one day join HYOEN, now that Shoma has good experience with OPOI I gues he would not shy away if he's asked for it.

I think Shoma has a bright future in ice shows ahead. ☺️

Se existe um animador americano que vem se destacando nos últimos anos na indústria dos animes, esse cara é LeSean Thomas, um afro-americano completamente apaixonado pelo o Japão e por sua cultura, e Yasuke, novo anime original da Netflix, é mais uma prova disso, em seu segundo trabalho para a locadora vermelha (o primeiro foi Cannon Busters), o diretor explora a figura histórica e a lenda de Yasuke, o primeiro e único samurai africano na história do Japão, dando suas romantizadas ao inserir elementos de fantasia e ficção-cientifica na obra, o anime segue por um caminho um tanto parecido com a franquia de jogos e anime Sengoku Basara, não se importando com os fatos históricos para obter mais liberdade de escrita.

O anime se divide em duas tramas, a primeira no passado de Yasuke, de como ele chegou ao Japão, e virou um samurai a serviço de Oda Nobunaga, esse núcleo apesar de tomar certas liberdades, é bem coerente com o que sabemos sobre o verdadeiro Yasuke, mostrando sua lealdade ao senhor feudal e sua mente estrategista.

A segunda e principal trama da obra se passa 20 anos após o incidente no templo de Honnō-ji em 1582, onde Oda Nobunaga foi traído por seu general Akechi Mitsuhide, e forçado a cometer seppuku (um ritual de suicídio realizado por samurais), nesse núcleo LeSean Thomas pega o período desconhecido do samurai negro, que após esse incidente, ele nunca mais foi visto. No anime, Yasuke é assombrado pelo seu passado em Honnō-ji, e vive escondido em uma vila, onde vive como pescador, até que uma atraente cantora chamada Ichika lhe pede para levar sua filha doente, Saki, a um médico especial, no meio do caminho eles atacados por um quarteto de mercenários, e a donzela acaba morrendo, Yasuke então decide proteger Saki e levar a garota ao médico, mas ao longo de sua jornada ele percebe que está mexendo com forças que vão além de sua compreensão.

O anime é competente em criar a atmosfera do Japão feudal, mesmo inserindo robôs gigantes e lobisomens na história, em seis episódios a série conta um arco fechado e redondo, com alguns pequenos ganchos para serem trabalhados em possíveis futuras temporadas, a direção de LeSean Thomas não deixa a desejar, principalmente pela a animação, já que aqui estamos nas mãos do estúdio MAPPA, que vem se destacando como uns melhores estúdios da indústria com trabalhos como, Jujutsu Kaisen (2020-2021), The God of Highschool (2020), Yuri on ICE!!! (2016), e Shingeki no Kyojin Final Season (2020-2023).

Enquanto a dublagem, o indicado ao Oscar Lakeith Stanfield, entrega um ótimo trabalho de voz, construindo um personagem amargurado que encontra redenção, já a trilha sonora brilha com uma mistura de instrumentais tradicionais japoneses, com uma mistura de lo-fi e hip-hop, composta pelo parceiro de longa data de Thomas, Flying Lotus, onde não nega a inspiração em Vangelis em inúmeras faixas.

Yasuke, é um anime de ação que ressuscita a figura de um personagem importante da cultura afro-otaku.
