did rafa playing singles cost them the tie: if not rafa it would have been rba. he's been in good form lately and botic hasn't, so there's probably a better than even chance he could have done it?? or... well an even chance anyway. certainly he would have had better odds than rafa. but that's not really the point because realistically speaking there was no way david ferrer wasn't going to play rafa. "i told him not to feel any pressure to play me" ok sure rafa that might get through to other people but this is ferru. be so serious. this is his greatest strength as davis cup captain, and his greatest weakness when he's captaining a close friend: he really really really believes in his players. he feels what they're feeling. maybe he can make hard decisions based on form about the rest of the team, the ones with whom he didn't share literally all of the highest points of his own career, but about rafa? lmao yeah right.

now. is this moving or criminal. well it all depends on what you want more—one last rafa match or a tie victory. different people will give different answers. (i think rafa would rather have had the win. i think...) hopefully enough people at rfet preferred to see rafa get his match that ferru does not get bounced from the job early like alex corretja did and has another chance next year to make those hard decisions when necessary and... well. the odds are not great for another title are they. ugh i want one tho.
