Ninjago Fic Rec Week (2024): Day 4

Prompts: AU/Movieverse/OCs! (Catching Up! I uh skipped Day 3 oop but I've got plenty to offer for this day! Which is...also late...don't look at meeee)

Aus WITH OCs (or as I like to call this list, my own personal indulgence corner. All the AUs/Movieverse stories I've read are ones that get recc'ed a lot already + I myself have already recc'ed them at one point or another, soooo let's throw some pure spotlight onto some OC stories! Even if a lot of it is connected to me to some degree that's irrelevant):

As The Years Pass By: A fic currently in the process of being rewritten/reworked but still chock full of next-gen Dragons Rising goodness! And it stars the one, the only, Jenna and Ethan from @rainofthetwilight!!!! This fic made me fall in love with her characters and I've loved reading/seeing/drawing these two adorable kids ever since!!!!

Dad!Jay AU by @taddymason: An AU so good I'm still catching up on reading it bit by bit to savor it for longer *-*)9 All the stories in this series are worth the read alone for the accumulation of taddy's character Kaida (a girl who needs no introduction–she's that awesome guys, trust me) but also the eventual father-daughter bond with amnesiac!Jay that is gripping and engaging aaaaall the wall through!!

I Carve This Poem From the Harshest of Storms: Another I'm not caught up with YET (a running theme for this Fic Week, it seems hgfhgfdfgds i'm sorry I'm slow and have a short-attention span). It follow two fascinating peeps in The Administration following The Merge, and without giving too much away, @theartsyswissapple ‘s voices for the characters just POP and make them feel SO real and it's been intriguing to read so far so yeah others should give it a try too!!!

What it Takes for You to See Me: A Spinjitzu bros story with added FSM and Mystake goodness too!!! This is one I've just started reading myself, but you know I love some throwbacks to Wu and Garmadon's past! And the OC here, @marhan-writes-n-draws's Amka, fits into the setting like a glove!!

Honeycomb: Gotta give a shoutout to @miqotepotatoe's Lucy while I'm here too!! Some short, sweet snippets of the Ninja Team's best (and most yellow) cheerleader!! I love her dynamic with everyone, and especially Cole <3

The Space Between Us: A very deep and heart-wrenching introspective into @k1ngtok's characters Lynda and Jamie, Master(s) of Space. It's story about siblings and bonds at its core, but also be mindful of tag of you're looking to dig deeper! (it also takes place in legacyverse technically but that's neither here or there I promise)

Flowery Language Another super funny and endearing story by King following Jesse (hey it's my boy!!) and Antonia on the case to discover who's been leaving flowers in Jesse's locker (spoiler: it's not Cole lmao). It's actually a semi-sequel to this old thing *I* wrote however long ago, but thaaaat's not required reading (though it does help). If you want more of a fix for the Jesse-Antonia duo + more of Jamie, this is the story to read!

Learning to Love (Again): Yet another King fic based in legacyverse (a coincidence), this one kiiiind of takes place during Season 2/Book 3 and follows Jamie on his quest to truly show his friends (Nya, Antonia, Harumi, Jesse, and...Olivia?!) just how much he cares about them through the power of love languages over the course of a week and it is AWESOOOOOOOOME!! Soooo many touching and feel-good moments, mostly soft slice-of-life with teenagers being teenagers, and is a great pick-me up when your soul is feeling sad ;w;)/ I advocate for this one just for the warm soft friendshippy-feelings it gives me alone!!! AAAAAA—

Something About Morning Glories: Jesse (oop there he is again) takes it upon to himself to comfort Jay after the latter finds himself concerned about something following obtaining his True Potential. A duo I desperately want to write more about but can't yet, so this little bit of foundation for their relationship will have to suffice for now ;w;)/

(and if you're still clamoring for more of a certain magic pink fool, there's plenty more where that came from; perhaps there may be a Jesse-Antonia friendship origin story on deck soon, along with maybe some DR stuff~! ...listen there will never be a good chance to self-advertise like this again!! BE YOUR BIGGEST FAN!!! SELF-LOVE BABY!!!! *-*)9 )

In the Company of the Stars: A tale as old as time—a Royal!AU where the fair groundskeeper of a palace's garden (that's the OC) falls head over heels for the prince far out of his league (that's Cole)—except, the prince absolutely likes him back...albeit only as his secret, suave alter-ego. But is that really true—and, more importantly, is there bigger problems to deal with right now???? There's romance, mystery, good food, royal drama, angst, fluff, sabotage, magic, a whole bunch of flowers, Harumi causing chaos on purpose, Skylor throws Chad across a room, Jay goes on a rampage a some point, Kai can't flirt to save his life—the author just needs some fresh motivation to post the darn next chapter already because the ending's gonna be really really good ;V

This is actually an AU based on the author's other fic (the first in the series) but that one isn't an anti-harem and this one is lol.

I find the concept really interesting- the reader has met Coffee in previous timelines, where Coffee appears to them and them alone, only for the world to be reset every time. It's neat and dramatic in a way typical to anti-harems.

Also, the author also has another anti-harem fic, with a focus on Swapfell Sans ^-^!!

Like I said I really loved your Publius Licinus Crassus and other Late Roman Republic arts and seeing how you kept sourcing your references I was just curious what would you recommend when it comes to Italian Renaissance Era. What mostly interested me were the Borgias and Sforzas (i have a thing for messy and weird family dynamics) and political/religious chaos in general. Your first reply got me interested in Venice and Milan, so i'm checking that out rn. Again, real sorry for being a bother, I just got curious !

oh, its no bother at all!! I love recc'ing books and answering questions bc theres nothing I love more than passing on the love for the renaissance (since my interest in the late republic started with the renaissance)

Its just that bc I've been reading on it for a long time and also because my brain works like a clown car, sometimes my recs look like this

Pretty sure Coming back to life got recc'ed somewhere recently cause there's been a surge in kudos for that specific fic the past couple days. But out of 20 or so people who gave kudos, and even some who took the time to bookmark the fic, not one single comment.

And it's like ah, yes, I could put in the monumental effort to squeeze in an hour of writing every day for weeks (I'm a slow writer) so I can finish my other in-progress fics... or I can just focus on the other priorities in my life.

And don't get me wrong, writing does bring me immense joy and I love the interactions I've had with the people who do comment. But the community used to be more alive. It used to be a *sustained* joy - it'd be a regular occurrence to get a little burst of happiness from a comment, which would keep that creative momentum and spark alive.

(On FFN twenty years ago I generally got a comment per 100 views - and I wasn't even a good writer back then. Now it's more like 1 out of 300 or so)

Now it's like sure, if I'm currently obsessed and my inner drive is in full hyperfixation mode, I'll write. But as soon as that dies down then there's no point because the time & emotional investment for me right now isn't really worth it just to put my fic baby in an archive so it can gather kudo-dust.

I went back and forth with @bentofaxmachine a while ago about a developer!LG/designer!CXS AU and it was a blast and it'd be such a fun AU, but it's just not worth slaving over to write because that excited keymashing session with her is the most emotional fulfillment yI'm going to get from that idea at this point.

Initial impression: confusion, hesitance, a little weirded out. Wasn't Severus in love with Harry's mom? Isn't that kinda creepy to be dating Lily's kid?

Improved impression: UNHINGED SCREAMING. Wasn't Severus in love with Harry's mom? Yes, and that's why this ship is so interesting (although one could argue it was platonic love but that was definitely not what was written in canon). Isn't that kinda creepy to be dating Lily's kid? Yes, and it creates such a fascinating relationship dynamic. Harry's eyes, Lily's eyes. Who does Severus really see when he looks at Harry? How can he resist falling for Harry when he already fell so hard for Lily all those years ago (and still carries a torch for her)? Answer: he can't.

In terms of cross-gen pairings for Severus, Snarry is probably my favorite. I don't really see him as the type of person to go after one of his students unless it was under very pressurized circumstances. Say, for example, in the middle of a war and he's just trying to do his goddamm best at keeping this infuriating kid alive. I could also possibly see Snaco, but that's an essay for another day. Although Eldritcher has an amazing Snudley fic that I devoured.

Surprisingly enough, I also enjoy reading Snarry in different AUs, outside the HP universe or the war doesn't exist universes. I attribute that largely to you actually. You kept posting so many Snarry recs in the CoMS discord, and I kept clicking them haha. But I do think their underlying personalities remain. Severus is an insecure, bitter, ugly (yes ugly) man. He thinks the best years of his life were stolen from him. He does not see any reason to care. Harry is an impassioned, stubborn, reckless youth. He listens to Severus. He finds a way to get past that bitter exterior and in a way Severus lets him. He makes Severus feel seen when really that was all he ever wanted.

And wow, that turned into a whole essay. Apparently, I have more thoughts about Snarry than I thought. I've never written a full Snarry fic, but I am oh-so-tempted by the Snarry AUctober Fest.

Ninjago Fic Rec Week: Day 1

Prompts: Canon/Lloyd Recs! The hard part is not recc'ing everything I've got because I have to save some for later days sgkhjggsf

Canon Recs:

Pathway: Canon-compliant look at how Wu and Ray's relationship over the years have helped shaped Wu into the person he is today (and the connects he makes with Kai in the process). As a suck for all things Wu and his dynamics with people, this is a must-read rec from me <3

Enclosed: A canon-compliant mystery where Lloyd, Zane, and Nya start to pick up on a few things that just aren't quite right. Still just getting started but a gripping read nonetheless!

Ready to Fly A bit of a Canon and Lloyd rec, this focuses on Lloyd's capture by the Overlord during the events of Season 3! Which, again, is probably something I would have loved to see in real time snksnkssk

Raising Hell Another double-whammy for canon+lloyd focus (can u tell what I like), follows the story of Lloyd finding his place on the team (and with others in general) especially in the case of the Smith Siblings. I go back to it all the time for the top-notch characterization and even just the dialogue. Siblings will being siblings <3

Lloyd Recs:

Lord Garmadon is Not Impressed With the Future: Essentially it's S2!Garmadon getting flung to the future to where S8!Garmadon is making a mess of his legacy, but it views Lloyd in the lens of both versions of his father and it is a FASCINATING read, and a nice little 'what if' that really makes me wish something like it happened in canon!

Far Too Good, Far Too Soon: A tale following some of Lloyd's time at Darkley's, where he inadvertently comes to learn about the pieces of the prophecy of the Green Ninja...and also, his eyes turn green in the process. Totally just a coincidence, yeah? Right up my alley when it comes to worldbuilding. And Darkley's stuff. And Lloyd.

Myrtleberries: Lloyd and Sensei Garmadon bonding, and getting used to the new changes both of them have gone through over time (or rather, the fact that it hasn't been very much time at all)

planetary go A fic where Llloyd gets a taste of what it's like to be a "Normal Teen" going on a "normal school field trip", but of course ninja-related shenanigans get in the way. Good thing the friends he's with don't mind too much!

In all honesty sweet anon, I haven't really been keeping up to date with the most recent gelphie fics, and I don't feel like recommending the same 5 fics i've been recc'ing over 8 years now.

Please don't take this as hate mail - but how come you don't just reblog the fics that have been posted on Tumblr? Some of the "recc'ed" fics are missing links as well.

I don't reblog fics primarily because of aesthetics and uniformity. I have the same format for every post regardless of the platform it originates from. Reblogging things from tumblr and then having to make a different type of post for works from ao3 or ffn messes that up and that's not how I want to be structuring my blog.

Another reason I don't just reblog, is because I feel that some authors don't put adequate content warnings or explanations of what will be in their work. Not that I'm criticizing them, I don't always include adequate enough warnings on my own recs though that's for the most part because I don't have the time to reread every work in order to pick out things that could be considered worthy of a warning. The purpose of this blog is to share my passion with other people and to expose people to some of the wonderful works I've discovered, but I don't want to be sending people to a work without proper warning of what they may encounter.

And yes, I'm currently working on going through a lot of my posts to sort out issues with deleted fics, blogs, and dead links. I have 300+ posts so it takes some time lol
