Would you mind giving us a rundown of the symbolism in the Queen E rainbow portrait? I love hearing artists ramble about their work and I LOVE symbolism.

This particular recreation I themed around parts of the history of Theatre and performance, either literal on stage performance or just a performance of who we are every day, to fit in, or to stand out.

Queen Elizabeth here is represented by a Drag Queen, which both connects to contemporary queer culture and the history of theatre itself (also a history nod to how in the 1600s women could not be on stage so the women characters were played by men, to the victorian music halls, to panto.) I loosely based the queen's design on Ru Paul, regardless of my own personal feelings towards that particular celebrity it is undeniable the impact they have had on international drag culture.

The robes and crown represent asexuality, the purple, grey, white and black from the flag. Because this piece was for a book where plenty of other identities would be represented, quite often with romantic pieces, I wanted to allow a prominent piece to represent that you're queer enough even if you are asexual (or aromantic, or grey/demi or single, your partner does not define you). As Queen Elizabeth I herself never married, though we cannot use contemporary queer terminology to define what little we know of her inner feelings, it felt like an appropriate fit.

On her sleeve the original had a glittering snake and apple, and I chose to draw a rainbow sparkling Chameleon, representing a reality in which sometimes we have to just blend in to be safe, but in our own spaces, such as a drag show, or on stage, or simply with friends we can be free to be ourselves.

I chose to keep a lot of the white pearl details from the original piece, which symbolised purity and virginity, but for me this means that it is not the physical act of having sex with someone that defines your identity, who you love, or your gender expression. You don't have to be actively having sex to know you're gay, or trans or even figure out you're not interested. While it can be emotional, meaningful or just fun, it doesn't have to be a major part of your identity if you don't want it to be, or aren't ready. (Though I definately didn't leave them there to make a statement about being "pure and virginal" that's all nonsense as we know.)

There's some of the more usual queer symbols, transgender on her necklace, lambadas and back to back moons for lesbians round the gauzey drape and the violets (again for lesbians) embroidered into the gown. There's a moon on her crown, which is often used to symbolise the feminine, and the Ace of Spades symbol across her hair and headdress, again for the asexuality.

THEN there's a few theatre references... on the original she has a gauntlet hanging from her ruff, but here I have a red sparkly boot from Kinky Boots and ruby slipper earrings for a "friend of Dorothy". And again on the original, the queen's robe has eyes and ears painted onto it, so here I used the lips from Rocky Horror, a dramatically painted drag eye, and an allusion to the Instagram logo for photographic performance/influencer culture. (I didn't fancy tangling with insta lawyers by using the exact logo.)

Can someone clarify something for me about Silver’s unique magic?

Ch7 spoilers!

Does Silver remember what his unique magic is when he’s awake? If so, how? If I recall correctly, Silver says he doesn’t remember anything when he wakes up. Even if he did, how did he figure out he was traveling into the dreams of others instead of just dreaming on his own? (Then again I suppose the rainbow birds tell him, but still.) I don't think anyone else knows of his ability either as Sebek seemed unaware, and I don’t believe Malleus knew either. (Then again, he seemed more surprised that Silver was awake rather than the fact he was in someone else’s dream.)

I've seen a couple of takes about Disco Elysium being copaganda going around recently, and beyond the fact that DE is relentlessly critical of the police force in general and makes explicit reference to the failures of the system that allow the officers in game to abuse their power, I also think it's important to note that there very literally is an in-world version of copaganda that the writers of the game use to parody that romanticised view of the brutality of policing. The RCM at their inception were structurally inspired by in-world copaganda- their culture, their "fashions, even weapon preferences, borrow heavily from classic Vespertine cop shows." Every investigation is it's own little drama, every officer imagining themselves to be the bad-ass hero of their own crime serial. Detectives name their cases like they're naming episodes of a TV series in a "robust but literary system"; a title that "draws inspiration from snoop fiction and Vespertine cop show staples". They give themselves nicknames to sound like cool, suave fictional officers- Ace, Dick Mullen, etc.- from the cool, suave world of copaganda.

The legend of the RCM's inception, the "point of contention" over its uncertain origins, is even an extention of that; the whole organisation is shrouded in this self-fictionalising mythos that allows for distance that in turn obfuscates much of its violence to the officers that participate in it. They get to convince themselves that they're not abusing their power; they're the hero of the story! The dichotomy of "good guy" taking out the "baddies," a manifestation of the libertarian fantasy of the "good guy with a gun" who does what it takes, just like in Annette's detective novels, and at the same time who rails against oversight bodies like Internal Affairs/'the rat squad' because due process slows down the immediate satisfaction of Swift Justice, despite Internal Affairs existing to protect the citizens from overreach on behalf of the police. "Wanton brutality" from police in their real world is a cold bitter reality but Dick Mullen was "made to crack skulls," "bend the rules and solve cases no one else can," and which version of that story is more comforting to the overworked, underfunded officers of the RCM?

The level of fantasy and detachment required for the cops to still see themselves as the good guys after everything that they do in the line of duty mimics The Pigs and her breakdown too; she parallels Harry so clearly. Both "did right by the kids" in the past, hoping for a better future- Marianne (The Pigs) by looking out for Titus and the Hardy boys when they were young, Harry in his role as a gym teacher. Both abandoned and left behind by the system that the RCM uphold- a brutal capitalist landscape with no safety nets. Both turning the source of their trauma into a costume, a performance, a shield, shaped by "radio waves and cop shows." The Pigs uses RCM items scavenged from the Esperance where they'd been thrown away, while Harry uses the Dick Mullen hat that Annette gives him but both are essentially in costume.

Harry identifies himself with the fictional detective as a kind of wish fulfilment; Dick Mullen is "wicked smart." He doesn't fuck up his cases and when he's sad it's not pathetic; it's effortlessly cool brooding and everyone sympathises. Everyone loves him. His violence- "skull crack[ing]"- is justified because he's a "good guy" enacting that violence against the victims of police brutality sorry "bad guys". He doesn't ever face repercussions; "Dick Mullen won't be sent to the clink for the sake of some legal niceties!" So if Harry is Dick Mullen then his failures, his breakdown, they're all just a part of being a "bad-ass, on-the-edge disco cop." He's not wrong, he's a hero! This idealised fictionalised idea of the police force, this "new, sadly better, reality" that both Harry and The Pigs cling to is "escapist stuff," "receed[ing] into a ludicrous fantasy world," so far removed from the brutal material reality that they're in.

My point is, idk. Disco Elysium is so far from being copaganda. It is a multi-million word long dissection of it, of the purpose of policing, of state sanctioned violence and its interaction with capital and the fallout experienced within the wider community as well as the trauma cycle created for individual officers. A dissection of how copaganda interacts with RCM culture and perception, and by extension how we interact with irl perceptions of police through that lens.

WHAT IS THIS AU? HOW DOES IT WORK?

A brief (I'm lying, this is a long post) explanation post for this AU for anyone new <3

As I've mentioned before, this AU is based on the theory that Papyrus is (was) Gaster. I did not create this theory, it has existed for a long time nd I'm also not the first person to do something like this with the concept—I'll touch up on that later.

About the Papyrus is Gaster theory

I've looked up a lot of stuff about it but I don't actually know where it originated. It's not super popular but if you're a Papyrus theorist you might have heard of it before!

It is not a super serious theory, it's more about pointing out the weird connections and similarities between Papyrus and Gaster and giving an explanation to the many weird things about Papyrus and his lack of backstory.

Just to mention some things:

Them both speaking in capital letters, having no asterisks, their weird way of phrasing things, Papyrus being described as forgettable, Papyrus hating hotland, him pretending he doesn't know about a lot of stuff ( The lab for example, he know what a lab is but pretends he doesn't in front of Sans), Gaster being related to hands and Papyrus never taking his gloves off, Papyrus weird connection with phones (his photo-graphic memory for phone calls) and Gaster's weird connection to phones(Fun events related to phones, and getting the garbage noise when using the phone in a darkwolrd), their love for puzzles (The CORE is a giant puzzle), THAT one quote that I still find misterious “beside, it’s rude to talk about people that are listening, right? not everyone is as though as my brother”, Papyrus DOES have Gaster blasters it's pretty much canon even if a lot of people ignore it, Papyrus is very smart—he's knowledgeable on many subjects and knows how to build many things— he's the character with the MOST dialogue in the game yet we don't know a lot of stuff about him OR his past, he breaks the laws of physics and of the game, and he's not yet in deltarune! The heavily Gaster connected game!

That's some of the things I could think about, and look, yeah... I'm probably looking way too much into it and these are all just coincidences! The weird Papyrus things can be related to other stuff! But I still like this theory, not because I think it's real but because I LOVE the possibilities!!!

About how this AU works

This au is basically a

"Pretend this theory is real! How would the Undertale timeline work then?"

We're giving Papyrus his backstory while also making a Gaster-focused story at the same time!

This AU imagines how the Papyrus is Gaster theory situation could play out! (And I'll also add some of my other favorite ut theories as a treat)

Papyrus used to be Wingdings and then Wingdings shattered across time and space, Papyrus and Gaster are different separate people.

Actually I kind of, treat Wingdings before and after the accident as different people also... you change a lot when you become an omnipresent being....Wingdings, Gaster and Papyrus I treat them all as different people.

"How did Gaster become Papyrus?"

He didn't "become" Papyrus just like that. After he shattered, he stopped existing the way he did before, he became a being in another layer of the game! But! physically his body was just there...

This is based on how the Goners and Gaster followers have counterparts that are not, uh, goners. A non-distorted version of them existing separately

Papyrus was just kind an empty shell at first. He still kept parts of Wingdings original personality but his Papyrus personality developed on his own with time!

"How did Gaster shatter across time and space?"

Usually everyone agrees it was because he fell into the CORE

Not here! I don't think the CORE caused his accident, it is a power source not a time and space altering machine. In this story, it was some other thing he was working on....

I've seen some people tell me this is a good idea for an AU and I agree!! I love this idea SO much, but as I said before I didn't create this concept or theory I just love it a lot!!

I really thought there would be more people that used this concept before but I couldn't find much... so I'm just making it myself!
