“You wanna keep being a smartass or you want me to finish fixing your face before you guys go out?” She volleys back with a playful tilt of her head.

Lou’s voice drops to a feigned whisper to Luka. “Sassy today.” Turning back to Fox, Lou mimes zipping his lips with a wink to Luka. “Face, please.”

She smirks as he steps over to her, letting her warm brown eyes flit back to Luka. “Hi Luka. I’m Fox.”  

“My very benevolent, very kind-hearted roommate who fixes non-emergent injuries from time to time.” 

Fox smiles plaufully up at Luka. “Only because he pays half the rent.” 

“I’d pay it all, for the record.”

“Not a charity case.” she brushes past Louis’ comment. “You didn’t even ask your friend if he wants something to drink.” 

“Apologies, Luka, I’m a heathen- help yourself to the fridge.”

We recently just met some kid called "V" (shows a profile pic of V from the manor's files) turns out that's Jane's child,,, I thought Jane was too young for adoption papers- but as long as they're happy, sure! Not my business anyway-

Though that's not the real issue,,,,- Is just- this kid doesn't stop clinging on poor Akihiko who's kindly telling that he has to leave-

Mai's carefree attitude is almost always equated to laziness and stupidity, but in truth it's merely her taking a back seat and having fun and letting the others do their thing. Yet at the same time, she's very observant. She catches things like when Taka first mentioned about "psychic powers" in a hint to Kasai Panic case, or when the woman falling from the ceiling was only looking at Naru. True, there are things she doesn't know, but she can grasp things easily if she's confronted with them or she needs or wants to know more.

When I read the novels before, I remember being shocked at how brilliant Mai can be. Yes, Naru is smart, but she can keep up with him and even twist his words like in the earlier chapter of vol. 3 (I haven't edited these chapters yet since I want to finish the rest first) when she was caught sleeping by Naru. She was adamant about her need for sleep just like hardworking politicians lol but still she made so much sense in her tirade, even Naru was amazed lol. (Never NOT let Mai sleep, you idiot scientist �� She'll bite your head off 😂😂😂)

The more I read about vol. 3, the more pissed off I am at the anime. (This is the only vol. I'm reading right now, so I'm lacking other references at the moment, I apologize.) They made her out as very stupid. Unlike the anime, Naru didn't have to single Mai out in the novels for explanation simply since "it's for her sake," i.e. she's the only one who can't understand or doesn't know yet. He just explains and she takes that in very well along with the others.

If we're to evaluate Mai according to the theory of multiple intelligences, she'll probably occupy a couple of areas. This does not mean Naru would be inferior; that guy is on another level by himself. But in terms of the potential of being a well-rounded intelligent individual, Mai has that sort of thing down if she's up to it.

Mai might make bad/wrong decisions and get in trouble for it, and I think how her stupidity is emphasized here and there as a result of her wrong choices or bad timing (being in the wrong place at the wrong time, for instance, like in Yasu's school case) OR inaction always causes her to be stigmatized. And in the end, this deep-seated labeling of her character as "stupid" or "trouble-magnet" or "impulsive" becomes how she is often viewed. Because she makes mistakes or doesn't do this or that, her flaws turn out to be glaring when they only make up a quarter or less of her.

I loved the anime very much, all right. (The character designs are A+ if I compare it to other mediums.) I still love it, but the novels stole my heart and shall forever color my views about the anime adaptation. If novel-Mai were animated in her whole sassy glory, I think I would weep and roll on the ground with happiness. 😂😂😂

P.S. This became a rant lol But all in all, I just think that as much as Mai can often be noticed for her "stupidity," her moments of brilliance can often be overlooked.

On the other hand, back to curses 😂😂😂😅 Yes, curses seem to be more complicated than they seem to be, and for good reasons as well. It seems to be a lot of work and not just a one-wave-of-wand-and-chant thing. Besides that, it needs patience and a lot of calculation as well.

The name thing is important in the novel, and it does get brought up, but nothing is easy in this volume. If the anime didn't make it obvious who's who, a fuller adaptation of the novel can make your head spin lol.

(*nods nods* Naru and Lin need Mai, as much as they're silent about that need hahaha. They do belong together forever~ lol)

In return for Mai's hard work, they are quite lenient though in having her do homework and stuff at the office. She's paid well too. Haha but I can imagine them showing their appreciation for her in different awkward ways as well lololol.

Naru vs Noll

So, at this point in the story, it’s already been revealed that Naru is pronounced as Noll. However, I’m not sure if I should start translating it as Noll or leave it as Naru. Or if I should do a combination of the two. I guess what complicates the matter is that I’m translating ジーン and ユージン to Gene and Eugene. It seems strange to translate them differently especially when they’re sometimes in the same sentence. But then it’s weird to translate it as Noll with Bou-san’s nickname for him. 

Take this for example (in all cases, it’s written as Naru (ナル)):

“Then, is Naru-bou your boss in the branch office?”

“Yes. More or less, Naru is the division head.”

Really?

“Even though Naru-bou is younger?”

“Age is irrelevant. Naru has performance in his favor, so as a researcher, he has seniority.”

“—While we’re at it, can I ask another question?”

“If I can answer it.”

“Nationality, is it English?”

“Naru? That’s right.”

“I heard that Noll is an American pronunciation.”

“Naru lived in the United States until he was about eight.”
