STEM writing advice

Ok so this could probably work for a lot of writing, but the only writing I've done in years is scientific papers, so I don't wanna lay untrue claims. Anyways, here we go!!!

Don't just put in a quote. Unpack it. By that, I mean explain the contents of the quote and then how it relates to your topic. For example, let's say you're writing about the sky and use the following quote: "the sky gets its color due to the reflection of light". Your followup sentence should explain this, looking something like: the blue color therefore is a result of this reflection in the atmosphere. It both helps explain the quote and its relevance. This is very important for supporting evidence for a claim.

Titles are hard!!!! I recommend writing your intro and discussion before deciding on one. This way you can pull a summary phrase from one to use for a title!

Download or save all your sources!!!! Trust me trying to find them panicking at 2am is no fun.

When compiling resources, make an annotated bibliography

WRITE ON YOUR SOURCES GOD DAMN IT!!!!! I don't know why this belief that you shouldn't write in books or on papers or anything is so prevalent. But fuck it. Trust me you want to write on them! It will save you so much time when you're looking for that once super specific, amazing, perfect quote you read.

Before you proofread, do not touch your paper for at least a day. Don't even think about it. You're too attached. After 24 hours of absence you'll be able to go "wow that really sucks what was I thinking?"

If you hit a block, just word vomit. Just write down anything and everything.

Or start with your evidence or quotes and build from there.

Use something like [zz] for missing information. That's what I use and it allows me to search the document for that to find where I'm missing something whether it's a citation, an explanation, a data point, whatever.

You don't have to write the sections in order. Write your methods first and your intro last. It doesn't matter at all.

It helps having someone else proofread your paper, but if no one can, Google translate or any read aloud service is amazing

Stuck on an idea? Talk about it to someone or something. I use my ferret. I'll just sit there and be like ok this is what my data is and this is the analysis from it, but how do I explain its relevance?? Like sure it shows this but what about this? And then eventually I figure it out. Bartenders are also great for this

If you don't like working at a library, make yourself a spot at home that's just for writing with no distractions. Yes, even that plant will get you away from your paper, trust me.

Get you a nice, soft pillow to bang your head against.

Learn to do calculations in excel and run analysis in a statistical software like R which is free to use!

If you want to access an article without paying, email the authors! A lot of time they'll send you the paper!

Keep track of ALL vocab. Any niche terms might have to be defined, so keeping a list with definitions/explanations is very helpful.

Make a folder with subfolders. Keeping things organized will save you so much time I promise. Put drafts in one folder, papers in another, lists in another, etc.

Save! Always save! Even better: set up autosave to occur every like 10 minutes.

Early mornings and/or late nights are gonna be your thing now I promise.

If your eyes start feeling strained or your head starts hurting, take a break! Trust me, once you start writing in what I like to call the "goo stage" (where you're starting to get foggy and tired, rubbing your eyes, stretching your back, etc) your work quality is gonna go way down. Get up, stretch, drink some water, take a walk, whatever.

Get a stress ball or something. Especially for running data analysis. Things get very frustrating.

Set up a news alert for your topic. It can help you find real world applications for your discussion as well as maybe find you a super recent publication!

You were on your way home from a long evening at your part time job. Before that you had already taken 2 finals that morning too.

You dragged your feet, exhausted, as you headed towards the crosswalk. Stopping at the edge as the traffic light turned green, you decided to pull out your phone and decided to watch a speed paint from your favorite artist who recently released a new video.

It just so happened it was a Hawks speed paint 👀

The light turned red and you slipped your phone into your pocket as your started to make your way across the street

little did you know this would be the last time you'd cross the street

A wild driver came barreling down the road, no regards for civilians or traffic lights, probably drunk or high or just someone out for blood.

You stood there like a deer caught in headlights as your life flashes before your eyes

You can barely comprehend what's happening as you felt pain engulf your body and suddenly you were unconscious

Keigo tiredly stumbled into his large apartment, kicking off his shoes and shrugging his jacket off by the door

He wants nothing more than to just flop down and pass out. The HPSC has been giving him hell lately about god knows what.

He let out a long sigh and headed towards the bathroom to do his nightly routine

As he finishes up, he drags his feet towards his bed and flops down face first into the comfort of his pillow and sheets

Keigo falls asleep almost instantly after getting into a comfortable position, worn out from a long day of work

What he wasn't expecting was a loud "thud!" coming from the main room. He jolts up from his bed, feathers ready to attack.

You groaned as you hit the floor. Your head was spinning and it feels like a truck just hit you

You suddenly became more alert, looking around in a panic, expecting to either be on the road and injured or in a hospital of sorts. What you didn't expect was a wooden floor inside of a random apartment.

You felt around your body for any signs of injury, but all you found were a set of wings on your back- wings?? Hold up. Why did you feel wings what kind of sick joke was this?

Your thoughts were racing as your breathing picked up. What was happening? Didn't you just get hit by a vehicle? Why are there wings in your back? Where are you even?

Feeling around in your pockets, you found your phone and whipped it out, trying for anything. You turned it on, the harsh light of it illuminating your face, you tried to send a text to your best friend, but alas, it wouldn't go through. Actually nothing on your phone seemed to work. You checked your location settings, for some reason it said Musutafu, Japan.

Wasn't....Wasn't that the location that most of Boku no Hero Academia took place?? This can't be right, this has to be a dream right? There's no way that you could have actually ended up here unless...

Then it hit you.

You read your fair share of isekai series back when you were alive in your realm. Mostly manhwas of characters getting reborn into another person's body, but, never actually reincarnating as yourself into another world.

That was the only thing you could think of. You must have been reincarnated into the Boku no Hero Academia world. Except as yourself.

In all honesty, this is not how you thought you'd go out. You didn't know what to expect after death, but this definitely wasn't it. After all, this was a fictional setting, wasn't it?

Well, not anymore because now you're living in it! Smh.

That would also probably explain the wings on your back. This was you now. You have a bird quirk.

Now, all you have to do, is figure out where the heck you are.

Just as you are about to stand up, feathers zip towards you, pinning you to the ground

You hear footsteps begin to come towards you. You don't know if you should be scared for your life considering you've already died once or ecstatic because, you knew for a fact, this could be none other than Hawks' apartment.

The winged hero finally emerges and stares down at you, crossing his arms over his chest.

He says in a low, gravely voice from sleep, "Who are you, and how did you get into my home?" You stare back up at him and nervously chuckle.

"I'm not sure you'd believe me if I told you." You nervously sigh out.

"Try me." He demands, sounding a little more irritated now. You sigh in defeat and start to explain your situation.

"Do...do you know what an isekai is?" You said sheepishly while turning your gaze away from his. He kind of gave you a confused head tilt and just a vibe that said “No”. You sigh again and explain it to the best of your ability. Hawks becomes more and more interested and confused as you talk, but nods a long slowly. 

“So...you were reborn here, but as yourself? Wait- does that mean you died before!?” He asked, disbelief and fear ran through his eyes. You looked at him in bitter amusement.

“Apparently I did. The last thing I remember of my world was getting hit by some truck or car. The dude clearly did not know how to drive. I had the right of way I was pretty sure at least. I mean, the light was red, usually that means pedestrians can cross the street? And plus he was going wayyy over the speed limit,” you begin to ramble on, the reality of actually dying setting into you. Hawks noticed the panic beginning to set into you and released you from his feathers. He crouched down next to you and grabbed your shoulders gently.

"Hey, hey, hey, look at me, you're ok now, right? You're here, and not dying in the middle of the street still. You're here. In Musutafu," he said trying to calm you back to reality. Well, what was your new reality. Your mind was racing. Trying to put together a coherent thought. 

You look up to him, with a panicked look still in your eyes, thoughts started to come out of your mouth as your brain was trying to catch up with the situation. "I'm... I'm in Boku no Hero Academia and, and you’re Keigo... standing... right in front of me..I have wings. I have wings? Jeezus I have fucking wings. And I’m dead in my own world. I don’t know anyone, well, wait, technically, I do know people, just-Oh gods! I’m so sorry, that name slipped out! I- I, I’m really sorry Hawks." Even in your wild state, you noticed Hawks tense up at the sound of being called Keigo by a total stranger, and were able to get out an apology. That was progress? You were slowly coming back to reality.

Hawks froze up a bit at the sound of hearing his real name mentioned. At first he wasn't sure if he believed your tale of the isekai situation, but after this he might have to reconsider it. He opted to shake off that weird feeling for now and focus on different matters. 

" I-I don't know what I'm supposed to do now? I have nowhere to go or to stay. I'm in a whole different freaking universe! My phone doesn't even hardly work here. And I have a pair of wings on my back!" You puffed them out angrily. Hawks glanced behind you and his eyes widened a little. You in fact, did have a set of bird wings. Kind of owl like wings. Not near as big as Hawks', but definitely big enough to fly you around.

Before Hawks could process the words coming out of his mouth, he was already asking you, "Would you maybe like to stay with me? I can help with your quirk too." He glanced away awkwardly. You looked towards him in disbelief.

"Dude, are you sure? We literally just met like 10 minutes ago? I mean, I'm all for it, I have nowhere else to turn to, but if you really really don't want me here, I will politely step out of your life." You so badly wanted to accept his offer on the spot, but being the considerate, mostly sensible human you were, you gave him the option to back out. Hawks shook his head.

"No, no, it's alright. You can crash here. Uh- I mean- stay here! Sorry!" You giggled at his comment.

"Well thank you very much!"

"It's all good. I have a spare bedroom you can occupy for the time being. I'll give you some clothes to sleep in that'll hopefully fit. Accidentally bought a couple things in the wrong size without looking. " (a/n: just...just assume its your size, or oversized, whatever's comfy idk) He jumped up and headed towards his room to grab you the clothes. You still sat on the floor. Still amazed at everything that was occurring.

Hawks walked back into the room and tossed you the clothes. "Hey uh, you know, you can get up now, sorry for holding you down earlier.."

You blushed and scrambled to stand up, "Oh no! It's ok! I understand. This would definitely warrant that kind of action. Some random stranger crashes into your apartment at like 1am. I completely understand. Honest."

He let out a small laugh and wearily brushed his fingers through his hair. The adrenaline of everything finally wearing off. He could feel the tiredness setting into his aching muscles again. “Ah, well, I’m going to head to bed now. The room is down the hall at the very end that you can stay in. I’ll take you out training tomorrow evening if that’s alright?”

You gave a nod of understanding and followed him down the hallway. “Goodnight Hawks,” you sang as he walked into his bedroom. He gave a hum of acknowledgment and closed his door. 

Making it into what was now your room, you changed out of your clothes so fast, eager to rid yourself of the past hours events. 

Not gonna lie, you could not figure out how to properly get your new wings into the shirt, even with the holes and snaps in the back. Your mind was too exhausted to even process this new skill. So you ended up going to bed without the shirt on and just settled for putting the sweatpants on. 

You figured it’d be good to just pass out asap. You were sure if you tried to recount the recent events, you’d spiral into a panicked mess. 

You shut your eyes tightly, willing yourself to sleep, trying to only think of positive outcomes for the future. But to be honest, you didn’t know enough about anything in this realm to think rationally about anything good.

26. Playful or torturous tickles?

Definitely depends on my mood, I usually prefer more playful and teasy tickles, and I like them because there’s more Rome for banter and it requires less stamina so it tends to last longer. But sometimes when I’m in an intense lee mood or if I’m feeling dangerous, I just wanna be wrecked. Like recently since I’ve single and haven’t told my friends about my liking of tickling, I just get insanely flustered whenever it’s mentioned a day it keep building up.

30. Tummy tickles or feet tickles?

I’m more comfortable with my tummy than I am with my feet, and it’s closer to a lot of other spots. And c’mon tummies are pretty cute hehe.

Hey sorry this took me a bit. For the sake of time I’m gonna go into less detail this time haha. Thanks for sending these!

1. Would you rather be more or less ticklish?

Definitely more ticklish, from my experience I like the sensations that come along with it so I want more of that even if it’s torture. It would probably also level the playing field more for any of the tickle fights I get into, which is fun and being more vulnerable would mean I would have to ask less, yay!

2. Do you have any melt spots?

I think my lower belly is the one of the only ones I can think of, thought it would be a regular spot for a while but tried it out and didn’t tickle that much. Definitely felt nice though.

3. Lers/switches, what’s your favorite spot to tickle?

Probably the sides, tum and armpits. They’re all pretty easy to reach and in close proximity to eachother. I especially love poking the sides, you can get such an adorable reaction from just one poke and I love it heheh.

8. Do you have any unusual ticklish spots?

Ok so this is weird but a while ago I tried one of those head masager things on my buttcheeks haha. They were pretty sensitive but haven’t really had much other experience to back that up, other than that maybe around the boobs? Tmi? Sorry 😅

Aaaaa it’s hard to choose a just one cause they’re all so good! I like a lot of the Sanders sides fics, especially the ones by @inconveniently-placed-cactus or @oliviaischillin1204 and I think @fluffymary’s art is really good! There so much more stuff that I can’t specifically name right now but oh my god this community is so creative and talented I am living for it! Ok I just had a really good idea for a Be More Chill t-word scenario!

So y’know how the Squip has access to Jeremy’s body and nervous system, and he can make Jeremy move and feel pain and stuff?

There is no reason why he couldn’t simulate the feeling of being tickled…

And he can literally read Jeremy’s mind so if he was in a particularly bad lee mood that day, or being extra stubborn about not following ‘adivice’, the squip would know.

Please consider helping me pay off a debt and afford necessities

Hello, I wish I didn't have to do this but I have to. I'm a 20 yr old autistic lesbian and I got into some shit. I'm not sure how to word any of this, but...

I woke up today to find my bank account has been blocked. I'm not sure how to translate these things, some of them may be specific to Czech republic and I don't know the english terms, but basically I'm in debt because I got caught on public transport without a ticket ONCE when I was 15 years old and couldn't afford the transport ticket on my way from school. I know this is on me, but I completely forgot about it. I didn't receive any warnings or letters or calls - they always silently wait at least 5 years, with the debt getting bigger every day without your knowledge, and when youre an adult they come at you full force.

I don't know if this happens in other countries, but it's a staple batshit thing in my country everyone knows about. There's children hundreds of dollars in debt because of public transport, it happens so often, it's always in the news and stuff. It's revolting and now it happened to me.

My debt is 455 dollars, and they already seized all the money on my bank account, which left me with nothing, and I have to pay 234 more dollars. I'm devastated.

I have no means of getting this money right now. I'm currently finishing last year of school and I have to pass what I'll translate as big ass state exams in less than a month to graduate. I don't get paid until the 20th of this month, but I still need to pay rent and buy food until then, and the amount I'll get would just barely pay it off. Since my brother and I moved recently, we have no furniture either and I was saving up for necessary items, which is now gone. I also just got approved for disability pension, but they're still in the process of calculating the money they will give me, which usually isn't much, but it helps.

So, I need to pay off the debt and afford rent and food on top of that, so Im gonna try asking for donations. My mom said she's gonna help me a bit, but she is poor as well as it is, so I decided to try my luck here as well. Please don't feel obliged to donate - I get it, money is tight and I'm not the only one struggling, and if you don't have much yourself, take care of yourself first - but if a fraction of my followers had some money to spare and was so kind to send me even a dollar or a few cents, it would be incredibly helpful. Anything helps a lot and I'd be eternally thankful.

In return, I can offer you art, which you can find on @xuve (original drawings) and ig @hrothgart (fanart), so if you donate and want a drawing, message me on here (I don't have much time rn though so it would take me a bit longer than usual to finish the commission!).

I will take emergency commissions for less money than usually, but I'll still set some price points because unfortunately I can't afford to draw for less than that right now. The complexity scales with the amount, but let's say...

2-9 bucks would be a doodle with simple coloring (again complexity scales with the amount), 10-19 bucks would be a fully colored character or a portrait (I can draw furries, humans, animals, real people etc...) And 20+ dollars would be a scene with a background. If you have something else in mind, feel free to suggest anything :)

I'm bad at summing things up but...

TLDR: I got caught on public transport once when I was 15 and couldn't afford a ticket, I forgot about it because they kept silent for 5 years with no warnings while the debt grew bigger, and now they want 455 dollars, half of which they seized from my account, which is now blocked as well. This thing happens in my country a lot. Im left with money in the negatives and I need to afford rent and food. If you were so kind and sent me even one dollar so I can afford to live, I'd be really thankful, and I can draw in return.

I have seen posts where people went off on accounts saying they shouldn’t try knowing their anon’s identity as they chose to be on anon for a reason. I don’t really want to have to explain myself to everyone and coming off stalkerish and you are the only one who knows the whole story and a couple of my followers xD I will have to think this through, until then it sits in my drafts. :D

You see, you said you spend a lot of time in the cold! Once again this makes me think of the same person I initially thought of. When you referred to Shadowhunters, again it’s the same person I am thinking of, but there is also another person in my mind so now I have two options.

Research and analysis go together, but again the person I thought of said something about studying sport stuff, exercise science thingy, that’s why it threw me off. That’s why I changed my mind and decided you are not that person. But now that you say A science it makes me think of that person again, but on the other hand I don’t know what the other protentional person studies. God, you are killing me!

You say we have talked the other day. There was only 4 people I have talked to outside of my asks recently and one of them was the same person I thought of from the beginning, but also my second option was between those 4 people too.

Both of my options are 18+, I follow them, and they are from the US. You see, both of my options have at least one of those letters, but now I’m off to confusion land again, because you said they call you 3 names. Who on earth uses 3 names? xD

The fact that you think you gave yourself away makes me feel utterly useless. I am trying to think of all the people I have talked to recently and all of them has I, E and M in their name or their name starts with those letters, but only one of them talked to me about cold and science. Whether I am missing something very obvious or I know who you are, and I am simply questioning myself at this point.

Oh plot buddies are people you trade ideas with. For years now, I've gotten used to plotting my stories with someone. Now, things went a little sour so I'm kinda :/. O want to know how not to depend on anyone else's word when plotting my stories (if that makes any sense). Sure, we get ideas from anywhere and everywhere but yeah. Help?

Alright, so I totally get what you mean now. I have a couple writer friends and non-writer friends I can usually turn to for advice and that is incredibly helpful. If you ever want an outsider opinion you can totally shoot me a private message or if you send me your email I can get you added to the WIP Book Club on Slack where there’s a whole group of people you can get to look over your work or brainstorm with you! But I get you’re on anon for a reason so I’m gonna do my best to give you some tips for working things out on your own!

Brainstorming/Ideas on Your Own

In terms of brainstorming, whether this means coming up with the first ideas for your story or events/characters/storylines to include later down the road, one upside to doing this on your own is you can focus on what interests you! Dive into fields that you find absolutely fascinating! J.R.R. Tolkien was heavily interested in languages so he invested in worldbuilding and creating complex languages for the different races. There are also a ton of generators online that can help you brainstorm a ton of different things like character names, scenes, towns, races, etc.

What I like to do for coming up with ideas is to sometimes throw on a playlist and scroll through tumblr or pinterest and make a list of song lyrics and things I see and use that to come up with a story (for example I’m going to try this now: “keeps getting stronger”, dandelion, sorcerer mickey —> I can turn this into a story about a sorcerer who accidentally casts a spell on a dandelion, causing it to grow exponentially, and as the wind blows against the weed it disperses its wish-granting seeds and suddenly the entire town’s wishes are being granted and chaos ensues. Aaaand that’s how you end up with 100+ wip ideas.  

Creating moodboards on Pinterest is also a great way to foster creativity and find inspiration. I tend to keep mine on secret boards but that’s just me.

Also there are a ton of prompt blogs on tumblr and even ebooks you can get now. 

Research

Alright, so another thing about being a writer is knowing a lot of things so that your story makes sense. You’ve probably seen other writers on tumblr agonizing over finding small details like the amount of blood loss a person can survive or the shelf life of a can of soup. Sometimes you have people you can turn to to ask for questions (I have a fairly medical-savvy friend which is great) but sometimes you don’t.

SCRIPT—–!!! There are a ton of blogs on tumblr that help you out with this problem and it is amazing. You can shoot them asks with questions and they’ll help you out with the knowledge they have. @scriptcreature (for animal questions), @scriptmedic (for medical questions), @scriptshrink (psychological questions), @scripttorture (helpful for science fiction stories with test subjects), @scriptautistic (for help with autistic characters). I just reblogged a masterpost with all the scripts and even though it’s not a recent list, most of the blogs are still active! And even if they’re no longer active you might be able  to find your question answered in an older post.

Look for educational websites where you can and also as old fashioned as it sounds, books can be really helpful.

Character-Specific Help

So sometimes talking to someone about character can help you discover your character’s personality, goals, ambitions, abilities, past, etc. There are a ton of OC question blogs on tumblr you can follow that will give you questions to think about for your ocs. It’s also handy to compile the oc questions you find helpful into a character development sheet that you can use as a guideline for writing your characters, almost like their own wiki article (or you could actually make a wiki, @nerathul​ makes wikis for everything and I love that about her). THIS Mary Sue Test is something I find incredibly helpful: http://www.springhole.net/writing/marysue.htm. Not only does the score indicate whether your character is a Mary Sue, but it will also tell you if it thinks your character is underdeveloped. 

Also remember when it comes to characters it’s not just about likes/dislikes. You should be thinking of how their past affects the way they are in the present, motivation/goals/dreams, and FLAWS (characters should not be perfect, not even the protagonists, they should slip up sometimes).

Plotting + Recognizing Plot Holes on Your Own

In terms of plotting, the best thing about having plot buddies, as you call them, in my opinion, is the ability to have a second opinion to see things that you might overlook. Which means, if you’re going solo, you might want to learn how to see issues before you’re too deep in the story to fix them. One of the key things I’ve noticed in my own work that leads to plot holes is character motivation. If you’re characters don’t have a reason for doing what they’re doing, there isn’t really a reason for the story or certain events and that can be a big problem.
