A linguistic analysis of tumblr hyperbole in the tags

This post expands my previous analysis of hyperbolic reactions to cluster tags by themes. There were too many themes, some of them overlapping, to create a cohesive graph. Instead, I present several overarching themes from a data set of 50 tags observed and documented in various corners of tumblr.

1. Feeling Normal™️

Tags within this cluster profess Normal feelings (read: extreme excitement, enthusiasm, obsession, derangement, etc.).

2. Feralness

The following data points conjure animalistic behavior. There’s a non-zero amount of biting and chewing involved.

3. Noisy Emotional Outbursts

These tags encompass crying, screaming, yelling, and other loud reactions.

All of these tags except the last one involve being thrown instead of throwing things. I, personally, am entertained by the range of places/situations people are throwing themselves into.

5. Bodily Harm

There’s a good deal of overlap with the previous theme. Nearly all of the tags involving throwing would result in varying degrees of bodily harm. Here are the tags outside of the Throwing subgroup.

6. Absurdism

My personal favorite cluster. The imagery conjured and resulting comedic hyperbole is just [chef’s kiss].

7. Keysmashes

These tags center less around meaning and more around style, so they form the last group. A handful of these could fall under Noisy Emotional Outbursts because they represent reaction noises. In my linguistic judgment, keysmashing increases the hyperbole – consider augh versus aughfhghghghhh – the latter reads as prolonged and more intense emotionally.

*one digression in a friend discord server was how people interpret keysmashes in their minds. Some hear the first couple letters and then some sputtering, others hear static. It’s a common joke that you need a minor in linguistics to understand conversations in this friend group. Such is the nature of things when the chaos linguist energy is strong.

while it may not have shown in her words ( in true fashion -- out of her own self-preservation ), today, it showed in her actions. for so many years luke and amara's unity had stood stronger than any wall of brick and mortar, any iron of steel. in the days after she had set the papers that damned them on the antique kitchen table, amara followed the same path she had tread down her entire life: swallow it. swallow down the pain until your throat runs dryer than sandpaper, until you are gasping for air, choking on all the things you've done, the mistakes you've made. the pain will go away eventually.

temporary anguish for hopefully permanent salvation. even if hope may be a fools game, the reflex has become engrained with her, woven into the fabric of her being.

the man who stood across from her felt so familiar -- dare she say it -- like returning home. perhaps what scared her the most was that she had never had a true home before. there are times she thinks back to the trailer where she spent the formative years of her life, the one she had tried so desperately to hide from him, hide from jessica. and while it is the inhabitants who make a home, she had found some kind of twisted comfort in the thought of it meeting its demise. a trial by fire. roaches. it had never been a home to her, nothing more than a dilapidated set of four walls littered with the shards of her childhood.

something in her hates how scared he is to approach her, but the thought is quickly swept away when she reminds herself that such a reaction is her doing. it is she who pushed him out to sea. while the effects of the passage of time have made themselves known, so much of him remains untouched. the same stance. the way his eyes wrinkle at the edges as he squints. when you succumb to devotion, when it's broken -- you're left with the reminder that you've learned to love absolutely everything about its subject. even the things that seem so simple, the minute details.

what do you think she'd be up to nowadays? the question tortures her more than she cared to admit. her subconscious would construct timeline after timeline that would never come true. " i- " amara begins, hand coming to rest over her heart, as she did in times where she missed her daughter the most. she would live forever there. " i just hope she would be better than us. better than we ever were. " five years. five years of missed birthdays, holidays, successes and failures. something in her cracks open all over again when she thinks about their last conversation, knowing what she knows now...

Walking with purposeful slowness from the parking lot to the gravesite, Luke thinks how unfair it is that time continues to pass after the most important people in your life die.

Five years. Had it really only been five years? He thinks about five years, considers how in such a short amount of time he and Amara had met Jessica for the first time, watched her eyes open and recognize them, learn to laugh and talk and walk and decide her favorite color. That time moved so quickly, but now that she was gone, the days felt only like...waiting. Waiting until the day he could see her again.

Amara is already here: he'd seen her car in the parking lot, but now he sees her standing by the tombstone, holding a bouquet. He's nervous - he considers that maybe their meeting is a bad idea and he expects to dread the sight of her, but the closer he gets, Luke realizes that his love for Amara is as strong as ever, even after everything. Perhaps grief was good for putting things in perspective.

Luke comes to stand alongside her, tries not to disrupt but he startles her just with crunching of grass underfoot. He puts his hands in the pockets of his jeans, braces his shoulders against the sudden cold, and ducks his head in a little nod. "Yeah," he answers after a long moment, and his voice wants to break too, but he pulls it together. A mother's grief needed its space; no matter how painful this was for him, it had to be leagues worse for her. "What do you think she'd be up to nowadays?"

Twice's 10th member is receiving hate

The members noticed the difference in her mood the whole day. It could be because she got bad grades, she woke up late as she spend the night training or because of the hate she's receiving. Maybe all of them but the unnies wouldn't know, she didn't wanna seem weak and bother them with her issues when she knows all of them also receive hate and are doing fine. After a long day, she said good night to her sisters and practically sprinted to her room without her roommates (SMC) sleeping as soon as her head touched the pillow, which was already a bad sign since she hated to sleep without someone in the room with her.

Jeongyeon - Yeah, she's also in a mood. The girl can give us a run for our money when she's being sassy *rolls her eyes*

Y/N - Well, that didn't go the way I wanted. I wish I'd just escape this hate, they're not being fair to me, I keep being up all night overthinking all the mistakes they point out and training to be better than what they see. Am I not good enough? Maybe I suck at this. What if the group did improve without me being the black sheep? 

While thinking all of this she wasn't aware that a certain hamster had entered her room and informed the rest she was awake. When she finally came back from her mind, she let out a scream because her unnie was just staring at her looking quite creepy

Y/N - UNNIE, YOU SCARED ME!

Sana - Sorry honey, you're somewhere else but I knocked before entering. How are you? You seemed kinda out of it...

Jihyo pulls Y/N closer and she lays on her chest while crying. Jihyo feels her shirt getting wetter as time went by and she felt heartbroken to see her maknae so glum. Without anything else to do everyone sat near and gave their love in their own style, all while Jihyo caressed Y/N's back repeating that things will be okay. 

After half an hour, sobs turned into sniffles and Y/N got out of Jihyo's chest and leaned on Momo that was behind her. Momo instantly gave her a kiss on the forehead, making the maknae giggle and the unnies hearts flutter with how cute she looked being so vulnerable.

Well, that was because you always picked the subject she loved the most. Which happened to be music!

You knew how much your girlfriend enjoyed talking about it so it was a bit risky-- because once she did start talking about it, she never stopped

But that was fine! You quite enjoyed listening to her, too

“Aww, now talking to you like this... I really want to play you piano!” She said while pouting and huffing

“Well, you can? I mean, why don’t we sneak out to your lab?” You offered, which she immediately agreed

“Alright. But let’s be quiet, okay?” She said and held your hand, dragging you with her

You two had a great time. Seeing how interested you are listening to her made her want to play it better! She did want to impress you

After a while, she did offer you to play with her, which you accepted after her insisting a bit. Well, she was a little hard to keep up with but you were enjoying the company “S/o, we sound really good together!” Kaede claimed as she let out a giggle

“Yeah, we do,”

Later on, you two had to part ways because it was getting really really late

But before leaving, you held her hands and looked her in the eyes, “Night, Kaede!” You said, giving her a soft smile. “Yes, good night, S/o,” She said before you started leaning in for a kiss, which she returned

Exchanging I love yous, you finally parted ways

After returning to her room, she was blushing madly as she felt her heart beating so fast. She thought it was impossible for her to fall for you even more while hugging her pillow, but she was wrong. You were so perfect in many ways and she couldn’t help but fall for you

Your mere existence was enough for her to overcome anything :’)

Next morning was something else, she didn’t get her sleep at all because she talked to you until late hours... But it was worth it

Yawning, she started to get ready for the new day and left her room to go to dining hall

She noticed many people had already gathered there, but you haven’t arrived yet

“Geez, they must be sleeping, too” It did make sense since she barely woke up this morning

But you didn’t show up during breakfast... And she was getting worried, I mean, you never missed the breakfast, y’know?

As soon as she finished eating, she left dining hall, carrying some food as she made her way to your roon

“I’m worrying for nothing, they’re just sleeping. They’re just lazy to get up...”

She gently knocked on your door, waiting for you to open up... No sign. She called for you, still nothing

“S/o, heyy...” When she pushed the door a bit, she noticed the door wasn’t closed to being with.

Before she could start having doubts and horrible scenarios, she entered your room and immediately dropped the stuff she was carrying

“S...S/O?”

She let out a loud scream, falling on her knees as tears left her eyes

She tried to reach you, but when her warm hands touched your body, she was only met with coldness

You were gone, you were gone and she couldn’t take this back. Bursting into tears, she wondered what did you do to deserve this. What did her lovely S/o do to deserve such a cruel ending

How bad did she wish to take your place, oh, if only she could

Before regrets could take over her, she felt a hand tapping on her shoulder

She looked up immediately, thinking it was just a bad dream and you were right beside her

But when she did, she only met with Shuichi’s eyes

And that was when it hit her for the second time

You weren’t coming back

Brb gonna cry

Also I was happy with this being fluff but then I was reminded I am supposed to be writing angst 😭 so this is fluff with a bad ending? How do you name that... Anyways,... Requests are still open I guess??? Lol ty for bearing with me I’m trying to finish requests but I have like 20 left-

Hmmm Katniss saying that her mother has a dress made of velvet is actually really interesting because it shows that Mrs. Everdeen Lily-Rose really was well-er off before she married Katniss’ father Hunter.

Or did she get the velvet dress from Maysilee? Oh well, who knows.

Aww, Katniss’ nervous habit of touching soft things repeatedly to soothe herself 🤧🤧.

Okay I gotta stop picking on Primmers, I know but like. How small is she that she sits on Katniss’ lap like a toddler but then in the following year is the same height as her? Doesn’t matter I know but still I wonder.

Okay so Mrs. E is the doctor for the people of the Seam? Idk I never thought about this but who does people like Peeta or Madge or Delly go to if they’re sick or hurt? Is there a still running apothecary shop that Katniss never mentions? Are her grandparents still running the family biz?

Also okay, I gotta stop having so many thoughts on all the lil details I know but like. Katniss says here she’s familiar with the herbs her mother doesn’t grow on her own so like a). Katniss is more of a healer than she leads on because no average person knows what kind of plant is medicinal and b). Her mother is just growing herbs and Katniss never mentions it again in the whole series? Or I just missed it.

Okay imma move on from this one singular paragraph but Gale and her made a pact a year ago that they’ll supply each other’s family with game if they were to be reaped... I’m feeling like their close friendship is probably only one year old then? Idk. Just my interpretation.

Honestly I love Katniss getting mad at her mom here.

She’s sixteen, for God’s sake, of course she’s angry at what her mother’s illness put her through.

Also I lowkey like that her mother got mad back because that lady in the movies had zero personality.

Why does he visit Katniss?

She describes Peeta’s father as a “big, broad-shouldered man.” And then describes Peeta as stocky. Idk the comparison of the two descriptions has always led me to think Peeta is gonna be a big dude when he grows up like his father. This made no sense and had zero correlation but I thought, so I said it, no regrets

WAIT WAIT WAIT. I just had a new thought, y’all. What if instead of the baker bringing cookies being a thing he does for all tributes, what if he’s bringing the cookies because Peeta asked him to, because he made them and wants to give them to Katniss and knows she’ll never accept / trust them coming from her competition? What if that’s the real reason the baker visited her in the first place? Because Peeta asked him to? This was such a shipper comment but idc, no regrets, remember?

I like that Madge had to kiss her cheek for Katniss to realize they were friends 😅😅😅.

I remember always loving her and Gale’s hug here. I’ve always felt like it was platonic, but especially when I first read the books and had zero preference one way or another for Gale or Peeta, I really liked how she said even with nothing romantic between them, “when he opens his arms, I don’t hesitate to go to him” or something I’m paraphrasing ok I’m lazy

Also though, this is the first time they’ve ever hugged? Idk why that surprises me? It shouldn’t because where is a hug gonna fit into a hunting trip 😅🤣😂 “I just caught a deer!” “let’s celebrate with a hug!”

I like that Katniss remembers how her father even failed to make a good bow sometimes. Random, I know.

I like that the Capitol weren’t entertained by the people freezing to deaths because it wasn’t bloody enough 🤭🙃

“How different can it be [to kill a human vs an animal]?” She’s about to find out, Gale 🥺. And when she comes back you won’t understand 🙄😔

What did Gale want to say before the Peacekeepers dragged him away?

I used to think it was a confession of love but I’m actually sure it wasn’t now? Just the wording “remember I-“ doesn’t sound like it, considering he never confessed anything prior to her coming home.

I’m assuming now he was just gonna give her some more advice to stay alive 🤷🏼‍♀️. Clearly if it were relevant it would have made its way to the others books.

Aww, she’s never been inside a car before 😭😭. I didn’t even know they had cars in this universe but okay.

I notice though how she says “In the Seam, we travel on foot.” So is Peeta just riding his trolly down the street every day with the other merchants then? 🤣

Omg I just realized this totally goes along with Peeta’s thing later on “I want to die as myself”

He’s refusing to hold back his emotions because he thinks he’s doomed to die and he’s already refusing to pretend to be or feel something ingenious.

But a Johanna mention in book 1 chapter 3 woohoo 🥳🥳🥳 also Katniss comparing Jo and Peeta is kind of like foreshadowing of their shared torture in book 3.

Omg she just called Peeta broad-shouldered and strong. 🥰🥰🥰 my headcanon for his post-canon body is confirmed

Also why does Katniss keep allotting his strength to carrying bread trays around? Are they heavy? Why have I never once heard of people who carry bread trays being strong? I always thought Peeta was really strong because he learned to fight in order to defend himself against his mother but that’s probably wrong.

But if a mother is abusive, it can lead to one of the kids being physically violent as well and we know Peeta isn’t but he has two older brothers I’m gonna cut myself off now but I think we all smelled what I just stepped in.

Also I just find it so fascinating now how she regards herself vs Peeta here.

When talking about herself, she says, “The competition will be far beyond my abilities. [...] Oh, there'll be people like me, too. People to weed out before the real fun begins.” But when she talks about Peeta, she immediately says, “It would take an awful lot of weeping to convince anyone to overlook him.”

It’s just funny how she discounted herself right from the start but thought he was a real contender and then come to find out, Peeta believes it’s the exact opposite 😂🙃. They’re both so stupid I can’t even take it.

Wait did they actually give the location of the Capitol and the location of District Twelve in today’s world? And I just overlooked it? Brb I’m gonna go to google maps right quick.

Okay so basically what I gathered is the Capitol is probably in New Mexico and District Twelve is somewhere between Kentucky and Alabama. Irrelevant I know. But just a reminder now to everyone that Katniss and Peeta are literally speaking, crying and screaming in thick, backwoods southern accents.

It’s literally so sad how everything for Katniss is about food. Like every motive she has, every action she does is about preventing starvation ever again. 🤧🤧🤧

I actually just realized I really dislike Effie Trinket, I hope they never speak to her again Post-Mockingjay. Idc how you’re raised you don’t need to treat teenagers who are sentenced to a probable death badly just because they laughed at you 🙄🙄🙄😡😡😡😡. They didn’t even really laugh at her, she’s just annoying and awful, we don’t stan Effie in this household.
