My conlang is coming along pretty well! I selected a phonetic inventory, decided to map my letters 1:1 to IPA characters, and came up with some structural rules for its syllables. I've also got a rough idea what I want the writing system to look like, but I've not really developed that in detail yet.
My lexicon is currently at 53 words! Which is... about 3.5% of a "functional" dictionary (estimated at 1500 words). Mostly I'm doing the really simple ones so far, like basic pronouns, conjunctions, prepositions, and other very common words.
It's been kinda fun thinking how to do these words in a semi-sensible way. For instance, the words for who, what, when, where, why, and how are respectively (using IPA characters) ka, ke, ki, ko, ku, and kʊ.
I also have the clever advantage that this language is a conlang in-universe too, and was created by in-universe by someone who wasn't really a linguistics expert. So if I make any dumb mistakes when creating the language I can turn those bugs into features by claiming it's just a result of the language's (in-universe) creator not knowing any better >:3
Thanks again to @self-loving-vampire for giving me the books I've been using as well as the motivation to do this in the first place! And also @cyberbun for her advice, which has also been helpful during this process.

Any think you’d feel comfortable sharing? ⭐️
Hmmm...I'll have to think about that for a second.
Ah!
I am VERY excited to be writing the Moot soon. I suspect that will happen in the next two chapters and it's going to be....tense to say the least. I'm talking about putting Dahlia and Elisif in a room together and shaking them. Words will be said. Perhaps things will be thrown and tables will be flipped. (Ok, maybe not literally, but you know what I mean.)

Small anouncement!
I finally got a tablet! I've been using it for a couple of days now, and the learning process has been really fun and chaotic.
Of course, I needed to draw something Robot-Trains related, so here's Kay's hand.
I also drew one of my OCs. Meet Jack! my fortune teller and farmer boy. I'll eventually show more of him and other OCs.
#oc art#robot trains#sketch#I'm really excited about this#Jack is not even my main OC I just drew him because yes

This makes me think about how my manner of speaking resulted in a nearly year long period of my coworkers claiming I was an AI. Or how I currently have them all going along with pretending I am Skeletor, because I keep my camera blocked and just set the background image to different pictures of Skeletor. Some from the 80's Masters of the Universe cartoon, some fan art. I add new ones every so often. What they don't know is that I ordered a very high quality skull mask, and 3D printed Havok staff parts, and am creating myself a Skeletor cosplay to randomly reveal one day in one of our daily Zoom meetings.
my favorite thing is to say "investing in" instead of "buying"
#I'm really excited about this#It will rival my amazing Morton Salt Girl costume#Skeletor is your snarky coworker

Sometimes you just have one of those moments where the progress we've made as a culture get thrown into stark relief. You look at something and go "Holy shit, that would never have happened when I was a kid."
Today, I had one of those moments when I realized that the teenage boys I'm working with are just. genuinely, openly enthusiastic about going to Build-a-Bear for their outing.
These are sixteen and seventeen year old boys! They just had a whole conversation about what to name their "cute", mostly new squishmallows! They're genuinely excited that they're going to Build-a-Bear this weekend and asking other kids to pick up specific accessories for them!!
Holy shit, that never would've happened when I was 16. None of the boys would have dared to be visibly interested - and neither would most of the girls! There would have been a million gay jokes and "Haha, you're a girl" jokes and "What are you, a baby?" jokes. Teenagers weren't even supposed to care about anything back then!
Less than 15 years later, and I'm watching three 17 year old boys treat all that as not even worthy of comment.
So let's call that a reason for hope. Even when the kids aren't alright, in some ways apparently they are alright. Go Gen Z, honestly. It's so lovely to watch you guys just openly doing and saying stuff that, when I was a teen, would've been a social death sentence.
#obligatory disclaimer that this really really obviously is not universal#I do live in a major progressive city#there's definitely a level of a liberal bubble effect here#but it's still really powerful to see it#because even in a major liberal enclave there were so many limits on the gender roles and homophobia etc. etc. fronts#and also the limits of the oppressive weight of obligatory teen apathy lol#seriously go gen z. so glad you guys decided cringe is dead. I love you for that so much#and I love it for you#not news#life#hope#homophobia#sexism#teens#teenagers#progress#gen z#btw if it wasn't clear I'm a#millennial#plush toy#plushie#squishmallows#build a bear#stuffed animal#like the idea of almost any teenager much less teenage boys#saying IN FRONT OF THEIR PEERS#that they are excited about their STUFFED ANIMALS#when I was a teenager#?????#cannot imagine that ever happening.

Okay so I made this a while ago, and absolutely nobody has asked for an update but I feel like since so many of you voted I kind of owe you one? And also I just really want to talk about it.
So the play is finished! (Mostly. I've written a first and second draft and have been making small adjustments to the second draft over the last couple of months. But it's basically finished now.)
Since the poll got equal votes for both options I tried to include both in my story, and I tried to use some of the advice people had given me. I ended up with a story that's largely about the autistic experience but not always specifically focused on it, with a confirmed autistic protagonist and another main character who's definitely neurodivergent but hasn't been diagnosed with anything, with an overarching message of acceptance. Also there are pirates (because I love pirates).
Here's the story in more detail:
My main character, Sasha (who might be played by me when we perform it so that's exciting!) is moving to a seaside town with her parents and older brother, Dylan. She's autistic, they're not, and to begin with they're not very good at supporting her and are quite dismissive of her needs, telling her off for pointless things and worrying that she'll embarrass them. Y'know, fairly typical uninformed parents and a brother who takes the piss.
While exploring the town, Sasha and Dylan meet The Busker, who, after finding out that Sasha has an interest in pirates, tells her a story about two kids - both lonely and unwelcomed - who disappeared from the town. The Busker suspects that the kids ran away with pirates, because every time one of them disappeared he saw a boat with a jolly roger flag on the sea. Dylan shrugs it off as a nonsensical story and takes Sasha home, where she and the parents get increasingly frustrated with each other. Sasha monologues to herself about how much she'd like to run away and become a pirate, but her monologue gradually goes from wishing for extravagant adventures to a simple plea for understanding and acceptance.
When Sasha is supposed to go to bed, she climbs onto the roof to watch the sea. She then sees a boat approaching the shore, and a group of pirates see her on the roof and climb up to talk to her. The captain asks what she's doing, Sasha tells him she's hoping for pirates to come and take her away, and the captain invites her to join his crew. Sasha, in a moment of excitement-fuelled impulse, agrees, and runs away with the pirates.
Once they're all on the ship, Sasha gets overwhelmed by the excitement and sudden change, tries to reassure herself but ends up running below deck to be alone. The captain tells the crew to give her a bit of time to herself. He later goes down to find Sasha feeling more calm, having thought it through by herself. The captain introduces himself as Cosmo and tells Sasha that he used to be one of the lonely, unwanted kids that make up the crew, and his uncle, who was a sailor, took him on as an apprentice so he wouldn't have to live with his neglectful parents. Cosmo and his uncle befriended and took in various other kids who had nowhere else to go, and Cosmo continued this after his uncle retired and went back to the mainland to be a busker (the busker, in fact).
Cosmo asks if Sasha wants to stay, and she says yes, which makes him very happy (and he does some happy stimming!). They go back to the crew, who introduce themselves, and we get a fun little montage of what they normally do in their day-to-day life, which ends with Cosmo reading Peter Pan (I saw the similarities and I went with it) to everyone as they fall asleep. The quartermaster, Mack, stays awake with a torch to make sure nothing dangerous happens, and they see something in the water coming towards the ship. They wake up the crew, and Cosmo reveals that the danger is just a seal. However, the seal jumps up onto the ship, takes his pelt off and reveals himself to be a selkie called Ennis, who says he needs the crew's help. (Then we have an interval.)
Ennis tells the pirates that his sibling, Muirin, has disappeared after an argument and he can't find them. The pirates agree to help him, and Sasha talks to him alone, asking why he was fighting with Muirin. Ennis confesses that he was a bit of a bully towards Muirin and the fight was a result of them getting fed up with his incessant criticism. Sasha tells him that she left her family for a similar reason, and Ennis suggests that her family may be feeling the same way he's feeling. Sasha doubts it but she does listen to him, and tells Ennis that when they find Muirin he needs to listen to them and make a proper effort to do better, which he agrees to do.
They see Muirin near the ship and Ennis accidentally scares them away by calling to them. Cosmo and Sasha then go after them in a dinghy. While following Muirin, they get to have a one-on-one discussion of the various ways their families have mistreated them. Sasha describes the autistic traits she was punished for as a child: lining up her toys, talking in a monotone, pacing and humming as stims, and being sensitive to lots of noise. As she's describing them, a younger Sasha appears at the other side of the stage to act out these behaviours. Cosmo then does the same, and he also has a younger version of himself show what he's talking about, but his autistic traits present themselves a bit differently: instead of lining up his toys, he organised them by colour; instead of talking in a monotone he put "too much" expression into his voice; instead of pacing and humming he jumped and flapped his hands, and although he's used to being in noisy environments, he hated hearing sudden loud noises. Sasha off-handedly suggests that Cosmo might be autistic too, and then says Muirin has stopped swimming and is on a little island. They tie up the dinghy and go to speak to Muirin, who is still rather pissed-off, but they listen to Sasha when she says she's having similar problems with her family and admits that Ennis might have been right about them, and she doesn't really want to leave them, she just wishes they were willing to understand her. Muirin agrees to go back and talk to Ennis.
Back on the ship, Ennis apologises for being a dickhead and Muirin apologises for disappearing, and they agree to talk it out in private and communicate as best they can. Before they leave, Muirin tells Sasha that if she does decide to talk to her family, they hope it goes well and they believe in her. The crew are worried that Sasha's going to leave them, but Cosmo reluctantly says she should do it. As they sail back to the mainland, Sasha asks Cosmo to come with her so he can talk to his family too, but Cosmo says he's been gone for three years, while Sasha's only been gone for a day, so she has a better chance of reconciling with her family. Cosmo's departure was arranged and his family was glad to see the back of him, and he's much happier now, with his new family. He promises to visit Sasha, and even take her for another adventure. He is so determined to keep his promise that he doesn't even say goodbye, he just says "see you soon".
We see Sasha's family at home, clearly very worried about her. When Sasha comes back her mum gives her the whole "where the hell have you been?!" spiel, and Sasha explains to her family that she ran away because she was angry with them, but she's willing to give them a second chance, as long as they're willing to listen to her and try to understand her better. They agree, and it looks like they're going to be okay.
The final scene has all the characters onstage, Sasha and her family on one side, Cosmo and the pirates on the other side, Ennis and Muirin at the front, and the Busker in the middle, singing The Parting Glass. Sasha says "see you soon" to Cosmo, everyone leaves, and the play ends.
So that was a long summary.
I used my own experiences as inspiration for both Sasha and Cosmo, making sure they had things in common but were also different enough to counteract the assumption that all autistic people are the same. I also thought it would be more of a unique take to have an autistic girl be blunt, flat-voiced and serious, and to have an autistic boy be excitable and enthusiastic, since you often see it the other way around.
Obviously you don't see Sasha's family for a big chunk of the story so you don't really get to see how her disappearance impacts them until the end, which I worried about a little bit but I thought having Ennis and Muirin's storyline mirror Sasha's, and giving a lot of attention to how Muirin's disappearance impacted Ennis, at least gives us an idea of what her family is going through.
It was actually my supervisor's idea to have Sasha return to her family at the end. I was worried that if I ended the story like that it would give the impression that I was saying you must forgive your family no matter what, even if they're assholes, and that wasn't the message I wanted to give, but I also think it is important to communicate with people and allow them to learn. So I think Sasha's reconciliation with her family works, because she is giving them a chance to learn and be better and they're taking the chance and acknowledging their mistakes. But while that's going on, Cosmo has decided he doesn't want to see his family again and is happy staying with his crew, so we've also got the message that it's okay to leave people if they've treated you badly. Best of both worlds!
If we perform this, I would honestly love to play Sasha. I originally wrote the role of the Busker for myself, but a recent addition to our drama group has turned out to be much better suited to the role so I've kind of prematurely cast him as the Busker instead. And everyone's encouraging me to be Sasha, so at least I know they'd approve of it. That would be great, because I'd be an autistic actor playing an autistic character, and I know more of the details about how I'd like her to be portrayed.
I wrote the role of Cosmo for my best friend, who isn't diagnosed with anything but is definitely showing signs of being autistic, or possibly ADHD, similar to Cosmo. So that works.
I tried to prioritise an autistic audience for the whole time I was writing this play. Obviously I want allistic people to understand it and get something out of it, but I deliberately wrote this story to resonate with autistics. For example, Sasha's difficulty processing the drastic change of joining the pirates, even though it's a change that she wants, might be something that hasn't occurred to allistic people but that autistic people understand and relate to. And there are more subtle things, such as Sasha not wanting to be touched, and her difficulty understanding sarcasm, and Cosmo's excited stimming. To me this is more than just a school project. This play has come to mean a lot to me, and I really really hope we can perform it, because it might mean a lot to other people too. If I'd seen representation like this when I was younger, I might have known I was autistic sooner, or at least had a better idea of what autism is. With this play, I might be able to give to other people something that I wish I could have had.
I'm thinking of writing a play for my EPQ, which will be an example of good autistic representation (autistic rep is the focus of my project) and I'm just trying to come up with a plot, so here's my question:
Reblog and explain your answers if you want. (That might help me.)
#very long post holy shit#autism#writing#playwriting#autistic representation#long overdue updtae that no-one actually asked for but whatever i'm doing it anyway#i'm really excited about this#the play our drama group was supposed to be doing got cancelled because of our director's health#which sucks but it now gives us a chance to do this one so it worked out in the end!#my first idea for this play was literally just “autistic kid goes to secondary school and has a real time of it”#which could have worked but it wasn't exciting enough for me#so i was like “how can i make this more exciting? i know! PIRATES!”
