Not to bring out my catcher in the rye defender since high school soapbox, but I have literally never forgotten the scene where emotional tornado teenager Holden phones a prostitute to his hotel room only to be so shaken by the abject cruelty present in this woman’s situation and life that he has a breakdown and tries to pay her for nothing and runs away….

#I’m still to this day so fascinated by Holden’s use of ‘vulgarity’ (swearing and the associations with sex etc) and then being horrified by #the cruelty present in the world and not knowing how to fix it so he runs away #he just CANT allow himself to accept comfort either like we don’t know for sure that the teacher he goes to visit eventually was being #predatory because Holden at this point is so emotionally keyed up that a man putting a blanket on it just triggers instant flight or fight #senses #and we can’t glean from the narrative the truth of that scene BECAUSE holden’s pov is so murky and fear driven in that moment #he wants to protect the ‘innocent’ from the pain he cannot deal with #he wants the power of adulthood #he’s frightened by the cruelty present in the world he’s just coming to understand #and most importantly. he’s just a bit of a shitty teenager #my boy…#tunes titters
