“What the hell do you want?” Akira asked exasperatedly as she answered Yoongi’s Facetime call.

“Well, hello to you too grumpy pants,” Yoongi murmured back. “I was just calling to see what alcohol requests you had for tonight.” Cassie had managed to find a date that worked for everyone so Akira’s entire friend group was meeting up at Jin’s house to hang out for the night. There was gonna be booze, good food, board games, karaoke, and knowing Jungkook, weed. It was gonna be a good fucking time. 

“Oh, so you got roped into that scam?” Akira laughed, setting her phone up on her vanity table so that she could work on putting her new braids up into a ponytail.

“Unfortunately,” he grumbled. “I’ve already spent over $100.”

“Well, you know that I like anything really so you’ve probably already got what I would’ve asked for,” she shrugged. “Hey Yoongi, let me ask you something.”

“What’s that?”

“What’s up with Taehyung?” She asked.

“Taehyung? As in Tae?”” He wondered. “Our childhood friend Taehyung?”

“Yeah, that one.”

“Why are you asking about him? You haven’t even met him yet.”

“I actually did, like three weeks ago,” she said, chuckling lightly when she noticed Yoongi’s slightly shocked facial expression. “I’ll explain it all tonight when I see you.”

“Well, there’s not anything bad to tell you,” Yoongi shrugged. “He’s the sweetest person ever, a little sensitive sometimes though. He pretty much stays to himself.”

“What does he do for work?”

“You’ll have to ask him that.”

“Ok, I’m starting to think that this man is the boss of the crime underworld,” Akria laughed, making Yoongi do the same. “I’ve asked Jimin too and he wouldn’t tell me either.”

“He’s nothing like that so calm down,” he shook his head. “I’ll just tell you that...his job makes it hard for him to know who’s genuine or not.”

“Hm,” she murmured in thought. 

“Well, I’m about to check out at the store so I have to go. I’ll see you tonight though,” Yoongi said.

“Ok, bye,” she waved before hanging up the call.

“What’s good bitch?” Akira groaned loudly as Cassie opened the door, immediately grabbing Akira’s hand and pulling her inside. “What the fuck took you so long?”

“I see you’ve gotten started without me,” Akira chuckled as she glanced inside of the red solo cup that was in Cassie’s hand. 

“Jimin’s making the drinks and I couldn’t resist,” Cassie smirked as she linked her arm with Akira’s, the both of them walking further into Jin’s house until they reached the kitchen.

“Hi Kira,” Namjoon greeted her with a bright smile, and Akira removed her arm from Cassie’s to walk over to him, bending down and giving him a hug.

“Hi Joonie,” she smiled. “How are you?”

“Pretty good, can’t complain,” he shrugged. She nodded and then looked over at Yoongi, who was busy rolling a blunt full of weed. 

“Hello to you too,” you scoffed as you pushed the side of Yoongi’s head. 

“Don’t make me kick your ass Kira,” Yoongi grumbled, setting the blunt down onto the tabletop and opening his arms, which she happily fell into. “How you doing kiddo?”

“Good, good,” She nodded, removing her arms from around him and standing up straight again. “Is that the good shit?” She wondered, glancing down at the blunt that Yoongi had picked up again.

“Only the best for you guys,” Jungkook assured her.

“Just remember, go out onto the balcony when you guys smoke that,” Jin reminded. “I don’t want to have to smell that shit for the next three weeks.”

“That’s how you know it’s the good shit though,” Hobi interjected, making you laugh as he walked up to you, giving you a firm hug. “How’s our little artist?”

“Broke,” Akira joked, making him laugh. 

“With that big ass payout you got from Tae, I refuse to believe that,” Jimin cackled, making Akira look over at him and narrow her eyes.

“Wait, payout from Tae? As in Taehyung?” Namjoon asked. “What did I miss?”

“Taehyung bought one of my art pieces from the art show a few weeks ago and he payed me more than what I was asking for the piece,” Akira shrugged as the doorbell rung and she looked over to see Jin jogging towards it.

“You didn’t tell me that,” Cassie loudly whined and Akira looked over at her with a small smile.

“There wasn’t anything to tell,” she promised. “He only bought a painting for me.”

“You sure he’s not trying to get into those jeans?” Hobi teased, making Akira smack him on the arm.

“Why don’t you ask him that yourself?” Jin suggested as he walked back into the kitchen, Taehyung trailing behind him.

“Ask me what?” Taehyung wondered, making everyone break out into a fit of laughter. “What’d I miss?” He asked, looking over at Jin.

“Don’t worry about it,” Jin assured with a laugh.

“If you don’t stop hogging the fucking blunt, I swear to God,” Akira threatened, making Jungkook laugh before he passed it off to her.

“God, someone gets snippy when they haven’t gotten laid in a while,” he snickered.

“You know, if you didn’t supply us with such amazing weed, I’d kick your ass clean off this balcony,” she smiled, making Jungkook do the same.

“I love it when you talk dirty to me,” he laughed, making Akira roll her eyes as she held the blunt up to her lips, taking a slow drag from it. The sliding glass door that separated the balcony from the rest of Jin’s house slid open and Akira looked up to see Taehyung stepping outside.

“I was wondering where the two of you escaped to,” he said as he sat down on the small footstool that was in front of Jungkook.

“You know Jin hyung and his dumb ass smoking rules,” Jungkook chuckled, making Taehyung nod. All of a sudden, the glass door slid open again, this time with Namjoon poking his head outside.

“Jungkook, I need your help with Hobi,” Namjoon said. “He’s super drunk and I’m trying to get him home but he doesn't wanna listen.”

“God, can’t a man enjoy his weed around here?” Jungkook sighed as he stood up, opening the door wider before stepping inside with Namjoon and sliding the door closed behind him.

“So,” Taehyung started, making Akira look up at him. “Do you always not talk this much?”

“Sorry, I’m more of a chill drinker and smoker,” she shrugged.

“Right,” he scoffed with a small laugh. “Besides that small hello you gave me after I got here, you haven’t said two words to me.”

“Oh, you must be used to women falling all over you then?” She questioned, only being met with his smirk in response. “Look, I’ve known everyone in there for at least 4 or 5 years now and I just got a face to place to your name a few weeks ago. Sorry if I’m not all buddy buddy with you yet.”

“Pass the blunt,” Taehyung said and she arched a brow at him before slowly handing it over to him.  She then watched as he put the blunt in between his lips, inhaling deeply before pulling the blunt away from his lips and exhaling the smoke. For some reason, he looked incredibly sexy to Akira as he did so. It was probably just the weed, though. Weed usually made her pretty horny.

“I think you’d probably be more willing to be buddy buddy with me if we spent more one on one time together,” Taehyung suggested. 

“Like what, a date?” She asked and he nodded. “God, you just don’t quit, do you?”

“Not when I see something worth investing in.”

“And is that all I am? An investment?”

“Good investments always lead to bigger and better things,” he replied smoothly, making her smirk.

“You sure that stockbroking isn’t this secret career of yours?” Akira laughed, and Taehyung smiled at her.

“Nah,” he shook his head, extending his hand to give the blunt back to her. “Now, what do you say? Will you go out with me?” Akira paused and took another pull from the blunt as she thought it over. She had been slightly more at ease after getting confirmation from Yoongi about his character, because everyone knows that Yoongi doesn’t sugarcoat shit. Also, she was very intrigued by him, his tan skin, his demeanor and his bright blue hair.

“Yeah,” she nodded, making Taehyung grin widely. “I will.”

“Great.”

Misadventures of Kit: Chapter Ten

The next few days were bumpy; Kit wasn’t sure he’d have made it through without Alistair staying with him. He’d spent almost four hours talking to the mental health overseer he was assigned, answering questions and filling out paperwork, and every day since, he’d been required to write in his notebook for at least thirty minutes. While it helped to write about his feelings, the obligatory time limit was quite grating, and it was hard to focus with how lousy he felt. The high-calorie diet the doctor had put him on was miserable. He felt bloated and nauseous almost constantly, and even when his weight seemed to be going in the positive direction, the doctor still had things to fuss about.

Apparently, despite the healthy diet and vitamin supplements, Kit’s blood tests still didn’t look good. The doctor had sent in a hematologist, who discovered that he had a suspiciously low red blood cell count. They’d sent several vials of his blood out for testing that morning, leaving him feeling faint as well as queasy. The poor nurse was properly struggling to coax lunch into him. Kit had rejected  a health shake, a fruit salad, and a bowl of pasta, and now they were arguing over a single slice of peanut butter toast.

“I don’t want it. I feel sick.”

“That’s because they took your blood, dear.” The nurse, bless her, was still being quite patient. “You’re going to feel poorly until your body can replenish it. Eating will help.”

“I already drank the juice the phlebotomist gave me.” Kit huffed, as if a single cup of juice were equivalent to a meal.

Alistair gently nudged Kit with his foot. He was sitting at the bottom of the bed, drawing, his hair tied up in a terribly messy topknot so he looked like a volcano spewing lava. “You can manage that one slice, Kit. They’ll put you on IVs again if you don’t.”

Kit cringed. After having so much blood drawn, the last thing he wanted was another needle jabbing him. At the same time, just the sight of food was making his stomach turn. Alistair’s words seemed to have more weight than the nurse’s - after a long moment of silence, Kit sighed and reached for the toast.

Alistair smiled at him, genuine pride shining in his eyes. “You’re doing so well with this, Kit…”

The older boy managed a weak smile. “I’m trying.” He mumbled, peeling the crusts off of his whole-wheat toast before taking a bite. It was painfully dry, but he’d been brought milk rather than water. He powered through several small bites before caving and picking up the glass. He sipped slowly, wishing it weren’t so creamy and thick. Alistair pulled a face too. He couldn’t imagine having to chug a glass of tepid milk, but he smoothed out his features whenever Kit glanced his way.

Now that Kit was eating, the nurse shuffled away, leaving him in peace to slowly and miserably peck away at his toast. Kit wasn’t sure what was worse - the cloying sweetness of the peanut butter, or the overwhelming richness of the milk. He ate about two-thirds of the toast before setting it aside with a grimace. Alistair let him get away with that, grinning. “Thanks, Kit.”

“I feel worse than when I got here.” Kit whined. “I'm convinced this peasant hospital is a scam.”

“It’s widespread free healthcare, Kit. Established by Enurin Bevan in 1949 to care for the masses. A good thing,” Alistair said, knowing it annoyed Kit when he parroted history facts like that.

“Well I'm not the masses and I hate it.”

“You are the masses. You eat and shit the same as I do.” He paused. “Well. Maybe you don’t eat. But they’re trying to remedy that.”

That actually made Kit snort, and he kicked Alistair lightly. “I'd like to think I do both with far more poise and composure than you.”

“How do you shit with poise and composure?”

“Not like you.” Kit grinned.

“I bet you’re always constipated with your diet. You can’t constipation-shit with poise.”

Kit scoffed. “You're disgusting.”

“You’re not saying no,” Alistair teased.

“I don't hold conversations about my bathroom habits.” Kit rolled his eyes.

“Hey, you’re lucky you can get out of bed. When I had appendicitis, for the first few days I had to use a bidet. Talk about humiliating! And when I’d burned my bloody arms I couldn’t even lift them, so I had some poor nurse in the bogs with me then too. You can’t take a shit in peace in these places.”

“First of all, bidets are not the abomination you make them out to be, and you only hate them because you haven’t gotten over the time your dumb arse mistook one for a drinking fountain.” Kit smirked.

Alistair scowled. “I was only five! Pammy used to tease me about that even years later.”

“Only because you still get so huffy. It’s hilarious.” Kit was chuckling now, unable to wipe the grin off his face.

“It’s not! I bet other kids have done it…”

“All the more reason for you to not be so flustered!” Kit pointed out.

“I suppose…” He sighed. “Still. Trust me to manage it.”

Kit nudged his shoulder. “Hey, don't actually get upset. I did plenty of stupid shit when I was younger. You probably remember more of it than I do.”

“I wasn’t getting upset, don’t worry. Just thinking…”

“About what?”

“Before. It would have been fine if Auntie and Pammy had been able to stick around, wouldn’t it?”

Kit went quiet, the cheerful smile melting off his face. “Maybe…”

“Sorry,” Alistair said wretchedly. “I shouldn’t have said anything.” He yanked his hair out of its ponytail, pulling a face as he shook it back over his shoulders. He’d been by Kit’s side almost all the time - he usually only had a quick wash in the sink in the morning, and he had only washed his hair once since the day Kit was admitted.

The sight of his cousin’s disastrously greasy hair made Kit cringe. “Lord, you can take a proper shower, you know. I feel lousy, I don’t have the energy to run off and do anything stupid.”

“Why? Do I disgust you?” Alistair grinned.

“Disgust is a strong… accurate word.”

Alistair snorted. “Can I shower here? They have a chair in there. It’s fucking luxury.”

Kit laughed. “That’s luxury to you?”

“I get to sit on my arse, so yes. Never do anything standing that you can do laying down. You ever tried to have sex standing up? It’s fucking exhausting. Your legs ache.”

Kit shrugged. “Sometimes the person is worth it. Besides, you get to lie down after.”

“You say that like I’m not just banging one boy.”

“That sounds like a you problem.” Kit grinned. “Or really, more of Julie’s problem.”

“Oh, ha ha. He’s never complained. Just for that I’m not going to wash my hair.”

Kit sighed dramatically. “Why do you hate me?”

Alistair grinned, swinging his legs off the bed anyway. “You want anything before I go?”

“Do we have any more ginger ale?”

“Yes.” Alistair fumbled in the bedside cupboard, opening the bottle for Kit out of habit. The older boy accepted it without complaint, taking a sip and waving as Alistair gathered his clothes to go shower.

“Enjoy your luxurious shower chair.”

“I will. Stay alive, you. Gingers don’t give up,” Alistair said, pulling a face to show he was joking, then disappearing into the bathroom. Kit rolled his eyes, glancing down at his soda and wondering if it was still cannibalism to drink your own kind.

The bathroom door locked, and before long, the steady sound of running water lulled Kit into a half-sleep. He was curled up in his blankets, staring drowsily into the middle distance when a familiar voice in the hallway made his blood run cold.

“Out of my way! Don’t you know who I am? I don’t care, let me in right now!”

Kit sat up with a start, instinctively drawing the covers closer around himself. The door slammed open, and he scooted as far away as he could, pressing against the safety bars on the bed. The massive shadow more than enveloped him, and Kit retreated deeper into his blankets, wishing they could swallow him up.

“Look at you. Clinging to cheap blankets in some rickety peasant bed. How far have you fallen?” Reggie sneered.

“I… I didn’t fall…” Kit mumbled, staring down at the sheets as his father’s gaze bore into him. “It was just the nearest hospital.”

“That you shouldn’t have fucking needed!” Reginald spat. “What were you thinking? Trying to snuff out my bloodline with one cowardly swoop! You’re bloody lucky I’ve not got another heir. If I did, I’d disown you for this. You could stay in this filthy peasant hospital with your filthy peasant cousin and stop being my problem.”

Kit didn’t know what to say; he was just grateful they were in a public place, where the worst Reggie could do was yell. When his father continued to glare at him expectantly, he mustered up a weak. “Sorry…”

“You’d best be fucking sorry!” Reggie’s eyes burned with an uncanny flame, made almost as orange as his hair by the cheap incandescent light. His powerful fist latched onto Kit’s shoulder, pulling the smaller boy close. “If you ever try something this stupid again, you’d best finish the job, or I’ll do it for you.”

Kit’s heart was beating so quickly it felt like it might burst. It took every ounce of courage left in him to nod. He couldn't have spoken if his life depended on it. Luckily, that was enough confirmation for Reggie to drop him back on the flimsy mattress.

“You’d best not bring another peasant faggot home this time.” The older man straightened up, stomping off towards the door again.

Alistair had cut his shower short, having heard the commotion. He hadn’t been able to make out the words, and hadn’t recognised Reggie’s voice; he’d just wanted to have a snoop and watch whoever was kicking off. He looked horrified as he came out of the shower just as Reggie turned to go. He ran to Kit at once, his face flaming red with rage, his wet hair tangled. “Oi! What the fuck are you doing here, you asshole?”

Reginald spun around, scrunching his nose at his soggy, disheveled nephew. “Did I interrupt your mud bath?”

Alistair took in the state of Kit now, his eyes flashing. “What did you do to him? He was getting better, starting to smile again. Why’d you have to come in here and ruin everything? Why can’t you you all get lost and leave us in peace?”

“I'm ruining things?” Reggie snorted. “How do you think your mother and I feel, knowing our noble bloodline has dwindled to almost nothing, thanks to you faggots?”

“Oh yeah? Well, at least us “faggots” can actually get it up. I found viagra in your medicine cabinet, you dirty bastard!”

If Kit hadn't been on the verge of a panic attack, he would've laughed. A weak smile cracked his face, but it vanished when Reggie turned to scowl at him.

“What're you smirking at, ingrate?”

“No… nothing, sir…” Kit ducked his head, quickly withering under his father's flaming glare.

“Leave him alone!” Alistair cried. “If you’ve nothing kind to say to your own bloody son, then get your insensitive arse out of here before I kick it out.” He stood firmly in front of his uncle, barely reaching up to his chest.

Reginald smirked. “I'd love to see you try.”

“Al, don't…” Kit was looking at his cousin with pleading, fearful eyes.

Alistair looked back at Kit - and for once it seemed to break through the fury. He saw Kit’s face, white with fear, shaking like a wet kitten. Alistair moved away from Reggie, going to wrap his arms around Kit. The older man sneered.

“You faggots have fun cuddling. I'm leaving before the poverty starts to rub off.” Reggie walked out the door before Alistair could snap back again.

“Asshole,” Alistair growled, then turned his attention to Kit. “He didn’t hurt you, did he?”

Kit shook his head, sniffling and sinking down in his blanket nest. Alistair climbed into bed with him. “What did he say?”

Kit didn't answer, just leaning on Alistair for support. He was eyeing the door warily, like he thought Reggie might still come back. Alistair held Kit in his arms tight. “I’m sorry… I didn’t realise it was him. He’s got a cheek, coming here.”

Kit shrugged. As unpleasant as his father's visit had been, he wasn't surprised. He was shaken, though, and it took a while for him to find his voice again.

“He… he said… if I ever tried something this… this stupid again, I'd better finish the job, or he… or he'll finish it for me.”

“He said what? That bastard!”

Kit flinched, though he knew his cousin was angry for him, not at him. He just nodded, once again at a loss for words. Alistair tried to swallow his fury, gripping Kit’s face in his hands. “We won’t let him do that.”

“Promise?” Kit looked desperately up at Alistair, fear shining in his eyes. Though they were the same colour as Reggie's, there was no fire in them.

Alistair nodded fervently. “I promise. I’ll never let that happen.”

Kit latched tightly onto him. “I hate it here. I want to go home. Your home.”

Alistair nodded. “They’re sending you home soon, I know it. They’ve been giving me all these leaflets and notes about how to care for you.”

“We still haven't heard back from the hematologist. Shouldn't they have gotten the lab results by now?” Kit fussed.

“Don’t ask me. I was rubbish at science, I just drew the whole lesson. Sometimes it takes a week or more, I think.”

Kit sighed. “So will they like, call when they get the results, or make me come back in, or what?”

“They call you to come in if there’s something wrong.”

“But do they call either way?”

“Yes,” Alistair said, laughing.

Kit's cheeks went pink with embarrassment. “I don't know! I've never used commoner healthcare before!”

“Stop calling it that! This is a very rare and good thing, to have public healthcare.”

“How am I supposed to differentiate it from my regular healthcare then?” Kit asked.

“This one is free,” Alistair declared. “You don’t get upgrades or a big fat bill at the end.”

“I'd rather pay and get the upgrades…” Kit mumbled.

Alistair snorted. “I know you would.”

“You're so mean to me.” Kit declared dramatically.

Alistair laughed. “Oh yeah, I’m awful.”

“The worst.” Kit was smiling even as he said it, stretching out across Alistair's lap. He gently nudged his cousin's shoulder, hoping Alistair would lay down.

Alistair giggled at him again, slumping back obediently. “You can ask me to lie down, you know.”

“I don't want to bother you…” Kit mumbled, resting his head on Alistair's chest. “just… if you don't mind.”

“I obviously don’t mind. I want you to be as comfortable as possible.”

Kit nodded, snuggling up closer. “You're warm. And your heartbeat is soothing.”

“That’s why you put babies on your chest. They find it soothing, like being back in the womb. No idea what Mother’s heartbeat sounded like. I can’t imagine it being soothing. Maybe it was the Jaws theme tune.”

Kit snorted. “I wouldn't be surprised. Father's is probably a war drum.”

“Yuck, imagine curling up on his chest.”

Kit cringed and shook his head. “No.”

“It’d be like that scene in Totoro. Where it opens its mouth and yawns and almost swallows that little girl,” Alistair giggled. He remembered long ago Totoro games with Kit, when he’d stand trying to make shoots grow or collecting acorns or searching for soot sprites.

Kit just shook his head, trying to think more about the Totoro games and less about being so uncomfortably close to his father.

“Do you remember all our games?” Alistair whispered. “When I was sent off to that awful boarding school at seven, I’d be excited for weeks about seeing you every holiday.”

“You would?” Kit seemed surprised.

“Of course I would! What else did I have to look forward to?”

Kit shrugged. “I don't know. I just didn't feel like I was that much fun. I was never as energetic as you, or as imaginative…”

“Oh, I was only so in my own head back then because nobody else paid any attention to me. You were just as imaginative.”

“I think you've always been more creative than me. I like that about you, though.” Kit murmured.

“You do?” Alistair seemed surprised. “Nobody ever said that…”

Kit nodded. “I never knew where to explore, or what games to play. I probably never would've left my room as a kid if it weren't for you.”

“Pammy said we complimented each other. I got you outside, you stopped me wandering into an animal trap or something.”

Kit laughed. “I don't think you were ever quite that bad. No, I take it back. I forgot about the frozen pond.”

Alistair grinned. “We had fun while it lasted.”

“You had fun.” Kit rolled his eyes, smiling and snuggling up to his cousin.

“You liked skating when it was at the proper rink. Remember how we’d go?”

“Barely. It's been ages. Tell me about it?” Kit begged.

“Sometimes Auntie took us, and then Pammy when we were older. Remember, she could barely move a centimetre without falling? She had to use those little props for the tiny kids to hang on to. But we could both go out and skate together. You were the one who could do it all properly, I just tore along and bashed into things - but at the end you’d take my hand and we’d skate together, and you’d steer me in and out of the crowds so it was like I was doing it properly too…” 

Alistair trailed off, actually shivering. He’d been so far off in his memories that he’d felt the artificial cold of the rink, heard the chink of skates on hard ice, felt the wind blow his hair back as he went gliding fast, Kit deftly dragging him out of the path of the public.

Kit closed his eyes with a wistful sigh. “You should draw that…” he mumbled thoughtfully.

“Yeah… Now I really want to.”

“You can move me if you want.” Kit offered.

“No no, I’ll do it when we get home. I want my pastels.”

Kit nodded, secretly grateful that he got to stay put. He snuggled up closer, yawning and wrapping his arms around Alistair. The younger boy ran his hands through Kit’s hair, hoping to soothe him to sleep. It worked quite well, and only minutes later, Kit was snoring away. Alistair was awake longer - though Kit was skinny, he was still a grown man, and it was hard to get comfortable with him lying on top of Alistair - but he eventually fell asleep too.

ohhh those vacations all sound so lovely! and WHEW the whole family?? those vacations are always so chaotic, so i’m hoping it was still wonderful! same with the family reunion, overwhelming but i’m still hoping you had a great time!! and 12 YEARS????!! i could be wrong, but i feel like i remember you saying the proposal in motn was inspired by your own proposal.

your annual trip with your mom, aunt, and grandparents sounds so special. is it the same spot every year or do you switch it up? do u guys have traditions you try to adhere to while on the vacation? and are you an only child?? i’ve got 4 brothers and no sisters so finding out people are only children always throws me off HAHAH

and yessss okay i do remember the office!! and how your mom is like everyone’s mom in the office. and what’s the specialty medication thing like? i’ve always felt like admin work like that seemed difficult (especially with all the insurance information) but i’m sure it gets repetitive and you end up remembering it all. those programs seem so daunting to me 😭😭

and i really am looking forward to reading it. i have weird commitment issues with starting a form of media so 16+ chapters of in depth fic seems so scary right now LOL but i know it’s gonna be so worth it when i put my big girl pants on and finally do read it! i thought about it a lot over the summer especially.

and nooo not the wisdom teeth! i got mine out last fall. i only had them on the bottom, so i didn’t get the whooooole thing, but i missed a lab practicum for one of my classes and i emailed my prof a photo of me post surgery as proof that i couldn’t make it because i forgot to get a doctor’s note 😭 it really wasn’t that bad! all i remember was saying how sleepy i felt and they said i could take a nap, and then i woke up LOL

the pain & aftercare was also manageable. get warm packs for your face!! they were LIFESAVING!! i used a cloth headband (the ones that are a full loop) to keep the packs against my cheeks and it was always such a relief (and then you look funny.) wishing you the best with your procedure! (i also had leftover codeine pills for pain and one time i accidentally took codeine instead of my sleeping pill the night before a big exam. fun little college things.)

Yeah me and my husband are high school sweethearts!! Which sounds so odd to me still but we've been together since we were 14! And yes the proposal was inspired by my own just because it feels very Bruce!! We were hanging out and had had a good night just doing nothing etc and I jokingly said "will you marry me?" while he was cleaning some stuff and he said something like "really?" and I said yes, then he turned around with a ring?? I said "are you serious?!" probably 90 times 😂

3 vacations was fun but also exhausting tbh 😂 the first one with my husband's family was great but there was some weird family drama?? Which is so odd because they are not like that 😂 But it was fine. The family reunion was fun too! I have a brother but he lives in Alaska so I don't see him much but he came down for that week!!

We don't really have traditions for our yearly trip but we do go to the same island every year! Our family has been going to that area since my mom and her sisters were kids! So like....forever 😂

Anything dealing with insurance is dumb as fuck because American healthcare is a scam 😤 and they change stuff constantly to try and weasel out of having to pay for these medications! It's just a lot of paperwork, being on hold, and finding out the right phone number to call really.

Lol sending a picture of yourself post surgery I love it 😂 I'm honestly kind of anxious?? Not about the actual surgery but the recovery. I had my gallbladder removed in 2017 and the recovery was a terrible terrible time and I'm just thinking like....mouth pain is so much worse for some reason to me?? But whatever it has to be done! But then I can get my teeth straightened after that!

Min Yoongi. Min Yoongi wasn't really an outside person, meaning- he just didn't go outside. Except for photography or the occasional outing with his friends or to play basketball, but that's it. So when it was summertime he didn't party almost everyday and get hangovers, he hunched over his computer screen and dwelt on what to write. Fresh out of college, majoring in English and literature, basic writing stuff, and minoring in music.There wasn't a lot of stability in finding jobs. Jobs that can be careers anyway. He just wanted to write stories, do his hobbies, and enjoy life. “Be the better you than you were yesterday” he likes to say. Which is fucking tricky, when he has depression.

College stressed him out so much. He always had blue rings under his eyes, a slight slouch from bending over his desk late at night to finish those damn essays, falling asleep on his desk, wondered if he should drop out, wondered if this was worth it.

Now a man with a degree, he doesn't know if he's the one that is worth it. He has those pesky thoughts linger in his mind. And tonight, they wouldn't leave. It's pissing him off, with each thought clouding his mind as he's lying on his couch. "Your stories aren't going to fucking sell. They're filled with shit." He tells himself. The music he plays and writes himself just feel like sounds with no meaning behind them. These thoughts are driving him mad, so he gets up, says "fuck it" and is on his merry way to drink his sorrows away.

1:13 am, June 12th

You're driving around aimlessly on a summer night, and it's drizzling. You got into those moods again where you're bored, alone, hella fucking sad, and need to get out of the your place because you've become a hermit. Summer is your absolute, favorite time of the year. No school, no deadlines, no stress. Shorts, tank tops, off the shoulder blouses are totally appropriate to wear. Sun's out, buns out, right? Fucking wrong.

It's been raining for a week straight. Your mood changes when the season changes. (Drastically, too.) You love summer so damn much, but it's probably the worst you've ever felt each time in the year, for the past two years. It's because you don't have a routine to stick to. You get out of bed whenever, eat whenever, get off the internet, whenever and however you want. This unfortunately leads to awful sleep schedules and a lethargic body. Unhealthy, tired, lonesome even. Plus, you hate the rain. You got out of your apartment, showered, ate, and even got dressed up a little for no reason, because pampering yourself is self-care. That small inkling of happiness builds, which brings you closer to a better routine.

Blasting music and driving in solitude was so exhilarating, and liberating to you. You're more of a walker than a driver, but people shouldn't really be listening to music with headphones in at night, walking alone at 1 am. So the car, it shall be. No direction to really go to, but you pay close to mind on where you're going, because you get lost easily. You never really venture out unless it's work, home, the store, or a friend's house. You're not all good at reading maps either. Driving at night at this hour isn't practical, but who said you led a practical life?

You don't venture far, just drive around in circles, take a turn here and there, and suddenly you're driving past a bar and realize you drove a little too far from home and never heard of these street names before. You turn around, and try to retrace your steps, because you can't be that far off from home. You drive slowly and see a man with his thumb up pointing in the air. He doesn't look menacing looking, just..a tad tipsy by the way you look at his stance. He's actually kinda cute when you look closer, with the way the little drops of rain start to gather and roll against his nose, his sleepy eyes making him more innocent, the way he's doing the sweater paw thing while his thumb is in the air and holy shit your car is parked right in front of him now.

He looks more wide awake now, with the loud noises of your windshield wipers swishing around. He blinks once or twice. You blink twice or three times. He's walking, you have your eyes on every move he makes, and he gets in. He just casually clips his seat belt and looks at you.

You've picked up a hitchhiker before. You saw a grown man holding his little son's hand. The little boy was wearing a backpack, and the father had his thumb in the air. Of course, you were scared it was some sort of sick scam and that you might get your car jacked because it was the slightly less nice part of town, but you figured you would give this a chance. You parked by them and immediately got your pepper spray out as a warning because you really can't afford to be naive. You drove the boy to school, and his father insisted on walking himself home. This is a different situation, because you left your pepper spray at home. Also, this is even more shady, because it's night time and why the hell did this guy just not get an Uber? God, you're really stupid for letting this guy in.

All this time you were staring at him and letting your thoughts run wild, when you hear him say "You're not a serial killer, are you?"

You've always had a smart mouth, to which you answered, "The chances of two serial killers in the same car is astronomical." He's unfazed by this response, and he just smirks. He really can't be a murderer when he's sporting sweater paws in his lap, can he?

"So uh..where are you heading?" You ask sheepishly.

"Home. I can type in the address into your phone if you want." He's a soft talker. You turn down your music.

"Yeah, you can do that. Here." You hand him your phone, and he's staring at it blankly.

"Hey, is there something wrong?" You ask.

"...this is an android." Jesus. Christ.

"Is that a problem sir?" You deadpan.

"No, simple observation. First time I actually hitch a ride, and my driver is an android user. This is a lot to take in." This time he's smiling, and it's noticeable.

"Are you sure you're not a serial killer? This much boldness and conversation on your end is freaking me out." You say as you start driving. The destination is approximately 16 minutes, not bad.

"I swear. Whenever I get drunk I'm just this outgoing." He chuckles.

"Because I have a complete stranger next to me now, I gotta interrogate you. Why didn't you just call an Uber? Or a friend?" You say.

"My phone died. I don't like the music that plays at the bars so I brought my ear buds, and I didn't charge my phone before I left my place. I was at the bar drinking for a couple hours. I'm one of the oldest out of all my friends, so they're still living on campus at the opposite end of town, any other friends aren't close around here, nor family. So no one can take me anywhere, and I'm not dumb enough to drink and drive regardless of how clear the roads are." He says that relatively fast for someone who's not sober and articulates it in a way that throws you off a bit.

"You just answered all my questions and I haven't even asked the rest of them yet. Are you sure you're not drunk? Or is this just a creatively weird way to pick up girls?" You inquire.

"I've figured I owed you a good explanation because you're practically my savior at this point. Plus, I'm not into chicks who picks up guys on the side of the road. I like cautious, sensible girls. No offense." This guy sure has the balls to be this mouthy at you.

"How are you going to call me your savior when you also just insulted me in one go, man? Gimme a break. I wasn't even planning on stopping for you, I was making a u-turn while slowing down and I stopped without thinking." He turns his whole body to face you.

"So you're telling me you didn't even think about letting a stranger in? You just..let it happen? This really is a fortunate day for me." He leans back in the seat, closing his eyes with yet another dumb smirk. It's not that you weren't thinking at all, you were just checking him out. No way in hell does he have to know that though.

"Hey, don't fall asleep on me now. You gotta make sure I'm going the right way." You nudge him with your right elbow lightly. He opens his eyes and now you feel them on you. You grip the steering wheel a little tighter because his gaze is making you tense, you can just feel it piercing you.

"Well, what about you? Why are you driving into the night like this? Getting home from a party?" Part of you is contemplating whether to overshare or tell him to mind his own business. Seeing as you are on some sort of high after picking up a hot stranger and most likely never seeing him again, and you can't possibly push him away or turn him off by your upcoming venting session because it's not like you guys are gonna screw, and he's in your car, so he's forced to listen. Plus, spilling it to someone you'll never cross paths again is better than venting to a friend that will just end up worrying about you and just saying the same thing again: it will get better.

"I needed to get out of my place. Depression has been kicking my ass so I'm just trying to piece myself together again by going out for a drive and fixing myself up. I've been in bed all day on my phone swiping and typing away, barely eating. My apartment is barely recognizable. There was so much shit going on in my head, I needed to get out. I'm not going anywhere, just driving in circles really. Then my dumb ass got lost and I found you." For a moment he doesn't say anything, but just sighs and says,

"That's a decent way of coping with it. On rare occasions I drink to forget about my depression." A soft "oh" escapes your lips.

"I was about to say sometimes but then I figured it would make me sound like an alcoholic. I swear I'm not." He says. "It's just been a really bad couple of weeks. So bad, I kinda don't care what happens to me at this point. That's why I decided to hitchhike tonight. Things like this happened before, if I walk to my place it will take about an hour and a half. I sober up, think more clearly, and go back to bed."

"You already sound like you're sobering up. I think you're halfway there to feeling better. Even if you feel better temporarily, it's still good." You say.

"Oh babe, I'm most definitely not sober right now." Even in the darkness you're worried he saw you blush after saying that. The conversation is flowing nice even though you literally met less than twenty minutes ago. You don't want it to stop yet, and try to talk as much as you can.

"What are your coping skills for when you feel like this? Do you like music? Maybe you could play it and drive like how I'm doing." You said.

"That's a nice idea, and I love music. It's one of my hobbies. Although I don't like the idea of wasting gas, I'm not really made out of money to do that. I write in a journal about how I'm feeling. Maybe play basketball. I try to surround myself by people who love me, but it gets overwhelming when they see you like that, like this." He points at himself. You notice how he has earrings. Pretty silver hoops. Always had a soft spot for piercings.

"I get it, I usually pace around my room with earbuds in to listen to music. Or outside and do that..but seeing as it's late I can't really do that. Also, your happiness matters. Nothing is ever a waste if it will make you feel better." You say, eyes still straight ahead.

"I like your way of thinking, I wish I was more positive. I'm actually way better compared to how I was a few years ago but sometimes you have a shit day. Or month. I'll keep that in mind, though." He says, sounding a little defeated.

In your car you were playing a pretty mellow playlist. It's all songs that you liked recently. A lot of them were sad though. Some old favorites here and there for added nostalgia too. What you forgot what you usually did though, was adding one song that was incredibly energetic and random from the rest of your playlist, so you wouldn't be sad the whole time it was playing. One minute you're listening to a symphonic ballad, and then you hear Super Bass blasting from your speakers. You're about to change it when you hear him laugh, pretty hard too.

"Oh god. This song reminded me of a really funny story. In high school I had a bad episode where I came pretty close to offing myself but then fucking SUPER BASS came on shuffle after my sad music ended, and I just remember laying on my bathroom floor thinking 'I can't kill myself to this song, it's Super Bass' so I just went to sleep." He finished saying while holding his stomach, not trying at all to contain his laughter.

You were about to ask what "offing yourself" meant and then replayed the story he told you in your head, and almost swerved the damn car from laughing so hard. After the laughter simmers down, you ask,

"So you said music was your hobby, what did you mean by that?" You ask.

"Well, I write songs. I make music, I produce. Just a bunch of underground stuff. That doesn't really pay the bills so I work a side job too." He says.

Not much is said after that. Words exchanged here and there like, "this is a good song." There was one moment where both of you said it at the same time and laughed some more. You want to pat yourself on the back in your choice of clothes and doing your makeup on a whim, because you're almost sure he was checking you out too.

You don't know why you haven't realized this before, but this person lives in the same apartment building as you, as you start parking in your spot. You were so caught up in the conversation that you didn't realize you ended up driving here on your own without really looking at the map on your phone. The stranger unbuckles his seat belt and turns to you.

"Hey uh, thanks for the ride. I hope you don't live too far away or anything." You turn off the car and unbuckle your seat belt, which makes him a little apprehensive.

"Calm down, I live here too." You start getting out of the car and walking towards him. You can see how flushed his cheeks are under the streetlamp.

"I've never seen you around though." You said.

"Well, I've never seen you around either. Maybe we are both serial killers." He has a very lovely smile.

"Thanks." Well, shit.

"Oh god you weren't supposed to hear that." You start playing with the hair tie on your wrist and looking down on the ground, seeing yourself in a little puddle separating between the two of you. He just starts smiling wider, and changes the subject. Thank God.

"We should get inside, before it starts pouring." It's almost 2 am, and you can feel yourself get worn out. Both of you walk inside the building and go into the elevator.

"What floor are you?" He asks.

"Third."

"Maybe that's why I never see you, I'm on the second." He says. You lean back on the wall and evaluate how your day went. You did the dishes at least. The whole place is still a mess. You took a shower, that's good, right? And you brought someone back to their home safely. Good karma is always needed. Your attention is on him now. He's about to step off on his floor.

"Later, stranger." You say. He's out of the elevator now, and says,

"Yoongi. Min Yoongi is my name." The doors start closing but before it does, you see him getting into his apartment. It feels good opening up your feelings and leaving your home for once. You finally get on your floor, and get inside your place. You head straight for your bed and stare at the ceiling. You remember all the dumb stuff you did tonight (and said) and remember the words exchanged between that guy, Yoongi. Now, you could just let this guy be and remain as acquaintances, or scheme ways to run into him more. It doesn't take long to try to find ways to run into him though. You have no choice because it's him, that runs into you.

Jemma was maybe, twenty seconds away from punching somebody in the face.

The only reason she’d refrained (so far) was because Coulson had instructed all of them to be on their best behavior (glaring at Daisy, Jemma, and Fitz in particular, as though Trip, Mack, Elena, and Bobbi were the epitome of well behaved agents), and Jemma was trying.

That didn’t mean that she just had to sit there and listen to people bad talk her team mates.

Especially when the team mate in question was Daisy.

Jemma doesn’t know exactly how she ended up sitting down at the same table as these idiots, but she was going to have some words with Coulson about how just because Jemma and Daisy couldn’t keep their hands off each other in the communal rec and dining room, didn’t mean that they should be seated on opposite sides of the room during SHIELD get togethers.

Especially if he was going to sit her with a group of people almost twice her age, who seemed to believe that you had to be over thirty to contribute anything important to anything, let alone something like SHIELD. Who apparently not only bought the rumors that Daisy was just a ditzy, klutz who slept with Coulson to get a place on the team, but also thought that her powers and Inhuman status were just a scam put in place to make her a SHIELD agent.

“But I’ve heard that it’s not only Coulson,” an agent who looked as though he’d never been on the field. let alone in life threatening danger, sneered as everyone stared over to where Daisy was laughing at something Trip said, hand wrapped around his bicep.

The laugh, which Jemma could hear clearly over the low din of voices conversing quietly to each other during the meal, made something warm and fond curl in the pit of her stomach.

“I’ve also heard that it’s not only men,” he continued, his greasy, smarmy voice bringing Jemma’s attention back to the table.

Most of the faces around the table looked disgusted, others bored, and there were two that were now leering at Daisy with disturbing looks on their faces.

Jemma felt exasperated and disgusted at the blatant homophobia, biphobia, and sexism that was still alive and well among most of the senior agents.

Jemma set her glass down on the table so hard that it very nearly breaks, spider web fractures spread out from the bottom of the glass towards the top, but she doesn’t really care.

After an uncomfortable beat of silence, where Jemma met every eye of the six other members sitting at her table, the same man cleared his throat uncomfortably, but that didn’t stop him from opening his mouth to speak again.

“You work with her don’t you?” He asked, looking somewhere between elated and cautious, but not cautious enough.

“I do,” Jemma answered primly, with a challenge in her tone.

He blanched a little, but recovered fast.

“So is it true?”

Jemma gave him a blank look, “You’ll have to be more specific, I wasn’t paying attention.”

He sputtered, turning very red in the face, and it was very amusing to watch.

But before he could recover, the woman sitting to his right intervened in a snotty, I-Know-Better-Than-You, voice, that probably helped to keep other junior agents in line, but was really not working for Jemma.

“The rumors, dear,” she said dear as though it was something more insulting, which didn’t help at all. She smiled indulgently as though Jemma was particularly dumb, and Jemma’s eye twitched.

She wondered if anyone at SHIELD HQ even bothered to check who it was exactly who co-created all of their recent weapon and gadget upgrades.

“You’ll have to be more specific,” she repeated, smiling lightly. “I don’t entertain idle gossip.”

The woman flinched back, simpering smile falling off her face, as though Jemma had slapped her, which was oddly fitting, because it was exactly what Jemma wanted to do.

“But it’s not just idle gossip,” another person said, and stopped to gulp when Jemma turned to look at them, but continued speaking, albeit more hesitant than before. “People have even seen her kissing multiple members of her team.”

“People?” Jemma asked disbelief dripping from her tone. “Are you one of these ‘people?’” She lifted her hands to do quotation marks around the word.

“Well, no,” he started to say stuttering.

“Well then,” Jemma interrupted. “Maybe instead of blindly believing something someone said, you should do your own research.”

“Well,” the first man said. “What about the so-called superpowers. We’ve never seen her actually use them. Just what we’ve heard. And the one time most of us were in the same room with her, she did the little hand gesture, but nothing happened.”

Jemma’s fingers curled into fists on top of the table, and she stood up once the man wiggled his fingers mockingly, in a mimicry of Daisy’s move.

“Listen here, Mr. I’m-Too-Important-to-SHIELD-to-Leave-My-Desk,” Jemma starts heatedly, feeling intense satisfaction at the fact that everyone blanches and leans back into their chairs. “I was there when Agent Daisy Johnson risked her life to stop an uninformed girl from using the artifact that ended up giving her powers and seriously injured another member of my team. Maybe next time, actually do some real research instead of getting all of your information from the lowlifes that do nothing but stand around the Donut table in the dining hall and spread false rumors about agents who are a million times better than they’ll ever hope to be. And while you’re at it, maybe go see a doctor to help to get rid of that giant stick that you’ve got stuck up your ar…”

“Excuse us,” Daisy interjects loudly, appearing out of nowhere and grabbing Jemma from behind, wrapping her arms around Jemma’s waist and tugging her away from the table.

“I wasn’t finished,” Jemma huffs indignantly as Daisy tugs her through the tables full of people watching her with wide eyes.

“Yeah,” Daisy says laughter coloring her voice. “I noticed, but I had to step in before you landed yourself with a court martial.”

Jemma pulls away from Daisy and turns stopping their procession at the edge of the dance floor that only a few couples have taken advantage of now that the dinner had been served and mostly eaten.

She gives Daisy a look, “SHIELD is not a military based agency.”

Daisy raises an eyebrow back, “Yeah, okay. Wanna dance?”

Jemma stops short at that a little surprised, “Why?”

Daisy shrugs.

“How much of the conversation at the table did you hear?” Jemma asks brows furrowing.

“Enough to know that no one will be too shocked if I drag you out on the dance floor.”

Jemma inclines her head slightly. “You want to make a statement.”

“The biggest statement possible,” Daisy says smiling and stepping in closer so that Jemma has to tilt her head back a little to keep eye contact. “But it’s not really about them. I don’t care what anyone else thinks, as long as the people that I care about know the truth. And I just really want to dance with you.”

Jemma ducks her head blushing slightly, but she nods. “Okay.”

Daisy grins widely, and grabs her hand, tugging her out onto the dance floor.

Predictably, the song changes from something fast paced, to a slow song.

Daisy tugs on Jemma’s hand, bringing her in close, and wrapping one arm around her waist, and extending their joined hands into a waltz position. Jemma hooks her arm around Daisy’s neck and lets her take the lead.

Jemma can follow Daisy’s lead in anything, and dancing isn’t any different, not when it’s a common thing for anyone to walk into the rec room and find the furniture pushed up against the walls, and them spinning together in the middle, oblivious to everyone else.

Which is basically how they would be right now, if it wasn’t for the tiny voice in Jemma’s brain that was getting progressively louder with every turn they took that let Jemma see how people were whispering behind their hands and looking in their general direction.

“I care,” Jemma whispers suddenly, and Daisy’s hand presses harder against her back, in a wordless gesture that she’s listening.

Jemma turns her head away from the stares and into Daisy’s shoulder. She stares sightlessly at the pearl necklace that Trip had given Daisy as a birthday present last year, and closes her eyes.

“It’s not that what they’re saying changes anything about what I think about you. Even if I didn’t know you, and know for a fact that all the rumors are just blatant lies, I still wouldn’t believe anything anyone says about you. But the fact is that I do know you Daisy, and you’re amazing. Incredible. Awe inspiring. Worship worthy.”

Jemma lets go of Daisy’s hand and slides her hand down her arm before wrapping her other arm around Daisy’s waist tugging their bodies closer together. Daisy slides her free hand across the back of Jemma’s neck, and her fingers dig in harder against Jemma’s back.

“So it’s frustrating,” Jemma continues. “To hear them talking about you as though you didn’t work your butt off to become an agent. As though you didn’t suffer for your abilities. As though you’re nothing, when you’re everything, and more than they could ever be. So I know that you don’t care, but I do, and whenever I can set the story straight, I will. Because I l-”

Jemma stops talking abruptly, and Daisy lets her pull away, but not too far, still spinning them around in slow circles.

Daisy looks fond, and happy. “You don’t have to say it, if you’re still not ready to.”

Jemma can’t help the smile, and the overwhelming amount of feeling that seems to spill out of her pours, because Daisy is amazing and understanding, and Jemma adores her.

Daisy leans down and presses their foreheads together.

Jemma exhales slowly.

“I love you,” she whispers, barely moving her lips.

Daisy’s smile widens, and she tugs Jemma in closer, tilting her head, to press their lips together.

Before she can, someone taps Jemma on the back, finger pressing down pointedly at the naked skin of her shoulder.

Jemma frowns pulling away, and turns around to spot the same greasy, smarmy man that was spouting bullshit at her table.

“Excuse me,” he says sounding for all the world like he’s doing her a favor. “But if you must do sick and depraved things, please take it somewhere else. No one here wants to see that. It’s sick and you’re going to go to hell…”

“Oh shit,” Jemma hears Daisy say under her breath. Daisy moves, but she’s not fast enough to stop Jemma.

So much for being on her best behavior.

#52: Season 2, Episode 6 - “Broadcast Blues”

Ren enters a contest to become Cynthia Mills’ Junior Reporter. Louis and Twitty devise a plan that includes feeding Beans answers to any question you could think of through an earpiece — Making him seem like a boy genius. Ren falls for it and decides to use Beans for her audition tape story. Yeah, that doesn’t work out too well. Meanwhile, Donnie is tired of seeming dumb and rents a videotape called “Look Smart, Be Smart” - An instructional video on how to appear intelligent.  

This episode opens with two contrasting scenes. We see Ren neatly preparing to watch TV, which is interspersed with sped-up shots of Louis and Twitty putting on raincoats and pants like they’re preparing for a flood in Louis’ filthy room. They run downstairs and noisily join Ren on the couch. We find out that Cynthia Mills has become Ren’s new idol and she’s excited to watch her on the 6 o’clock news. That’s a little weird to me. I feel like Cynthia has always been their local news anchor. Out of nowhere, Ren is like “she’s amazing!!” But, eh. Let’s just go with it for the sake of the episode.

Louis and Twitty have a local news idol of their own that they’re excited to watch: Weatherman/“comedian” (I use that word very lightly) Zippy Winds. I'm gonna go ahead and be a wet blanket here, much like Ren in this scene, and say that Zippy is annoying as helllll. Louis and Twitty are acting like toddlers, and I can't help but cringe a bit. Like, Zippy literally seems like a character you'd find on a Playhouse Disney show. If I didn't know any better, I would swear he walked off the set of The Wiggles and right onto the Sacramento news. I know Louis and Twitty can be immature and it's great sometimes... but this always felt a little overkill to me.

Ren is me. Like........ what the heck. 

Ren tells Louis and Twitty that she’s going to submit an audition tape to become Cynthia’s Junior Reporter. They realize there’s a chance they could meet Zippy if she won. So, Louis makes her “promise on all that is holy” that she’ll introduce them. The only problem here is that Ren's audition tape is pretty weak. She films a sample news report on whether or not students at Lawrence find the wombat mascot offensive to wombats and other living creatures. She interviews Tawny and Tawny is like “Yes, I’d have to agree with that! If a wombat dressed up like a human and jumped around like a doofus, I’d be pretty insulted.” - Something tells me both Ren and Tawny would be Tumblr Social Justice Warriors if Even Stevens took place in 2017. Back then, they used to call Tawny an “Activist” lol, so probably.  

Tawny is also me. 

The subplot is introduced with Donnie sneakily watching a VHS tape called "Look Smart, Be Smart." He's apparently tired of being an airhead and wants to be respected for his brain. Good luck with that! This is definitely both my favorite, and objectively the best, Donnie subplot. Which is basically why I've ranked this episode a little higher than I originally thought I would. It's a hysterical side story! The tape comes with a little box of materials. One of the first steps to appearing intelligent is to put on a pair of glasses from the box. Naturally. Donnie's adorable here, though. You can tell that he really feels like the guy on the tape believes in him, lol.

Louis sees the draft of Ren’s audition video and thinks it’s super lame. They’ll never get to meet Zippy if she submits something like that. There’s a bit where Twitty says she should do it on bacon because it’s “crispy, salty and nature’s candy.” Again, they were ahead of the game with the bacon fixation.

Beans comes over and Donnie decides to start trying out some of the new smart tips he’s learned from the tape. Beans asks if he smells bacon, and if I were Beans I’d probably think Donnie spiraled into an existential crisis over the simple question. He thinks back to what the tape taught him: 

“When asked a question, don’t blurt out the first thing that comes to mind. Take a moment to ponder, and stroke your chin. Remember! For all anyone knows, you might be a bonafide genius!”

Beans is standing there all confused and just says “What part of bacon don’t you understand?” That’s pretty great, I must say. Donnie responds “Hey! For all you know I might be a bonafide genius!” Bless his soul.

This episode is actually only Beans’ second appearance ever and the first time he shows interest in bacon, btw! He goes into the kitchen and tries to steal some from Louis and Twitty, who are still brainstorming a better sample news story for Ren. Louis tells Beans to get out because he and Twitty are big-boy thinking. So, Beans repeats what Donnie said (The “bonafide genius" line) and Louis immediately gets an idea.  

He and Twitty end up feeding information to Beans through an earpiece hidden in a hat. They send him into Ren’s room and have him start spouting information. They quickly trick Ren into thinking he’s a genius, and she right away decides to use Beans for her audition. She records a tape of her asking him super obscure questions, which he miraculously knows the answers to. Much to Louis and Twitty’s excitement, she ends up getting the gig! The only issue is that the station wants her to do the Beans story live on air… and Beans ain’t no real-life genius. Problem.

Louis and Twitty are freaking out trying to find a way around this. Twitty thinks they should just get it over with and tell Ren, he says that she’d understand. Then Louis envisions Ren yanking his ear like an elastic out of anger after hearing the truth. Just another weird gag. (You know I’m not a fan of those.) In the end, they just decide to continue feeding Beans answers and hope for the best. Side note: Louis is extra shouty in this episode for some reason. I have no idea why, but it’s just a little much.

I really just... can’t get on board with this stuff, man. 

Donnie starts taking the advice from the “Look Smart, Be Smart” tape very seriously in everyday life. But, it unfortunately only makes him seem even dumber than before. It’s WONDERFUL! And results in what is definitely my favorite scene of the episode. Me explaining or quoting it won’t do it justice, so I’m just gonna embed it here for you to watch:

Once they get to the news station, Louis and Twitty start freaking out a bit. They have to keep coming up with excuses for Beans and his un-genius-like weirdness. (“He needs his hat to keep his brain warm!” “Bacon is his brain food!”) But their biggest worry is finding a phone jack to connect their laptop to the internet so they can feed Beans information. I know I’ve already said a few times now that technology is really the only thing that’s dated on this show, but... It’s true, lol. Pretty crazy that this was the situation 14 years ago. Today, we all have the internet at our fingertips with data/wifi. They could just throw a Bluetooth earpiece on Beans and feed him everything from their smartphones/a phone call, lol. Dang. Maybe we really are ~futuristic~ today after all.

Donnie decides to try out his smart skills again on Cynthia Mills this time! This is great. It’s clear as day that Cynthia has watched the tape, too. She’s wearing the same glasses, using “cornucopia” in a sentence, and repeating questions back at Donnie. They’re both so confused by each other. It’s a fun bit and another reason why this Donnie plot is so strong. This scene also serves as the first step to #exposing Cynthia as a phony. Ren walks over to Donnie saying “Isn’t Cynthia brilliant?!” and Donnie warns her that she might not be all that Ren thinks she is.

Beans ends up accidentally telling Ren what’s up. She confronts Louis and Twitty and is pretty furious. She comes waltzing into the control room where they’re hiding and they FREAK OUT. It’s actually pretty funny. There is a fabulous Louis Scream here and Shia does that thing where he puts the neck of his shirt over his head. I freaking love it when he does that. I die every time. 

The scene moved pretty fast. This is the best screen cap I could get. You get the idea, lol. 

Ren says that the point of being a reporter is to tell the truth, so she has an obligation to tell Cynthia what’s really going on. She tries to tell her, but Cynthia cuts her off before she gets a chance to tell the truth. Turns out, Cynthia breaks the news to Ren that she has decided to take over the Beans story to further her career. She’s pretty rude about it. It’s super slimy. Ugh. Sooo, even though Ren was initially po’d at Louis and Twitty for their elaborate scam, she decides to kick back, relax and let the story go to air so that Cynthia looks like a darn fool.

This part is pretty great. Cynthia is so arrogant and excited to have Beans on the show. She introduces him by saying “Socrates, Galileo, Einstein... Bernard Aranguren. Possibly the four greatest minds to have graced this planet.” Incredible. Bean’s immediately follows it up with:

Beans: “Is this my water cup?” Cynthia: “Uh… Yes, it is.” Beans: “Mmmmm! I like water.”  

Basically, the story goes down in flames. Beans knows literally nothing and starts climbing all over the desk. Cynthia is distraught. It’s satisfying.

The gang watching Cynthia fail miserably. Same. 

The episode ends with Louis and Twitty “meeting” Zippy. He just opens his dressing room door and sprays them with water. They’re fine with that, though. So.

Yeaaaah. Idk, man. I just don’t particularly care for this one too much. Like, I said though.. I LOVEEEE the Donnie plot -- specifically the scene I included here -- and wanted to show him some love. But, as you can see.. that takes up about 1 minute out of 22. So, not exactly enough to save the whole thing for me. At first, I thought it might just be my dislike for Beans that’s clouding my judgment here, but I don’t think so. As I mentioned, Louis and Twitty are next level goofy and it’s yet another episode where Louis is a little selfish. I have to keep reminding myself what I’m basing my rankings on. And of course, one of them is laughs. I, unfortunately, found myself... not laughing... all that much here. :( Well, except for the parts I highlighted.

This one’s a lil bit long so I’ll put it behind a break

A while ago I posted about a song that was called The Howl that Lay the Canyon Bare. I mentioned that there were a few false starts on that song. One of those songs was a ripoff of Jackson Browne's The Pretender. Basically, while I didn't like the song, it became some kind of freakish mushroom creature. It budded its spores and they grew into their own creations. There was another song that came from it but it's not very good and I didn't use it. This song, however, did.

Basically it came from me wanting to write like, a fast paced and kind of old fashioned rock song. Not necessarily a standard blues rock structured song, but maybe something that was had the same force and power. My old song had some lyrics that I liked “I'm gonna get a good job in the city, I'm gonna buy a big screen tv/I'm gonna make a lot of friends and forget their names, 'cause they don't mean much to me”. Sometimes I think it's a shame for lyrics to go to waste because I always have a pretty tough time of writing them. A lot of times I'll just pluck lyrics from unused stuff, which is a little annoying because then I can never use that unused thing.

That lyric was written while I was still working at the RESP place and I was feeling pretty miserable and gross. I felt evil. I wanted to write something gross. More recently when I actually wrote this song proper, I was feeling a little less evil, but still very aware of those same evils. This was back in Febuary when my boss had recently laid off everyone except me. The amount of work hadn't reduced. He'd essentially used Coronavirus as an excuse to save a few bucks on his business. To this day, we don't have any masks, sanitizer, or gloves. The car the company gives me is literally falling apart. I have no right rearview mirror, the transmission is broken so that sometimes the engine just revs but the car doesn't move, the AC is broken, the winter tires are still on, the entire car shakes all the time, and up until recently it'd stall if you took a turn too sharply. If you can recall that time in Febuary, it was also when there was a whole asinine debate in the media about how many deaths were “acceptable” to keep the economy going.

Obviously I know that capitalism is “evil”. We all know that somewhere in the back of our minds, and saying it in that way (especially online) is pretty trite. At some point I started reading books about socialism in my spare time. I don't claim to be an expert, I couldn't make it through Kapital (that fucking thing is like a thousand pages and he spends the first 200 talking about a coat). I just want you to understand that it is something that I don't just invoke for cheap jokes. I think it'd be a good thing. Anyway, the evils that capitalism is based on really started to show their faces around that time. We had to let people die because we couldn't let the system slow down. A lot of liberal leaning people like to begin and end the conversation with “greed”, as if so many problems could be solved if we fixed the individual, personal problem of greediness. Maybe that'd go a long way if we could somehow magically shame people into good behaviour, but the way things are set up means you'd have to convince the people who make the rules to act against their own interests. The whole idea is silly.

The entire idea behind a neoliberal model of capitalism is a lack of true accountability. Kurt Vagnathghet (note to me, fix this spelling later when you have internet. Or don't and leave it in as a dumb hilarious joke) has a little part in Cat's Cradle where a brilliant engineer relinquishes his position as president because he is uncomfortable with authority – he'd rather be told what to do. The narrator wonders why until he begins delegating tasks to the engineer and realizes that the engineer has now managed to detach himself from his own humanity. He simply has become a cog in a system that sustains him. He is free of any real accountability because nothing is his own decision. He simply carries out orders because he must in order to maintain his own place in the world. That's kind of like the model we have today. Everyone is beholden to someone. Even CEO's are beholden to shareholders. Even shareholders are beholden to other shareholders. They cannot act against their own interests because there will always be somebody to replace them waiting in the wings. Yes, they make the rules, but they don't make the rules collectively, which means that if they stop “playing the game” then they'll lose what they have to somebody who is. I'm not saying I have sympathy for these people, I'm just describing the mental gymnastics that this system demands. I don't believe that people are inherently evil or selfish, but I do believe that we have a system that benefits those who are selfish and punishes those who are selfless. It's a self sustaining system where nobody is really in charge of their own life and the only real way to feel any control over your situation is to become vile – and the more vile you become, the more control you feel. It's not a question of staying true to your values, it's a question of how evil will you allow yourself to be.

Of course this only applies to people with that ability in the first place, as in people who are white, from a wealthy family, live in the western world, that kind of stuff. In my more unhinged moments I consider this about myself. I don't know if I could ever be in a position to take advantage of people, but what if I could? How much would I be willing to screw people? How immoral and wrong would I act if it meant a life of comfort? What if I just started scamming and hurting people? What if I “played the game”? How amoral would I allow myself to become before it wasn't worth it? These are questions I don't know if anyone can really answer. It's disturbingly easy to take an opportunity when presented with one. I'd like to say that I would stay true to myself, but would I? Would anyone?

Over the course of history, our ruling class effectively managed to replace the task of governing with a series of complex and often injust or imperfect systems. Over time, even the highest powers in the land have become beholden to something – something that is no longer even human. Something incapable of moral judgments because it does not think. It turns out we were living in the matrix a long time before computers were invented (That's really corny but let me have this one. I want to feel cool okay?). They created this system to absolve them of responsibility, and in doing so have rendered themselves powerless.

I wanted to outline this grotesque reality and my own personal worries in the most grotesque way possible. I didn't want to create nu metal, so I went to the second most grotesque form of music: 70s rock and roll. I wanted to have this angry frantic energy. It was really fun to record because I rarely get to just have straight aggressive 8th notes like I'm some sort of punk. It's also nice to just crank up the volume and the compressor and have a good time with distortion and different guitar tones. I love the dry sound that I was able to get. I do have to say, it's tough to keep that tempo and energy up for an entire song.

Vocally it's not the most difficult song, but a bunch of fun to sing. You get to be really aggressive with your delivery, and there's a bit of a showiness to the melody. For better or for worse, it's got that musical theatre kid energy to it with some old fashioned sounding musical phrases. I kinda like it for that. The lyrics are really unpleasant, so it adds to the fun where I can just say all this ugly shit and have this frantic energy behind it. At one point the compressor I was using did something weird on the vocal take, and it really jacked up a particularly deep breath I was taking. I decided to leave it in because it added to the vibe. I thought it'd be a weird quirk. Like the sound of somebody doing a big fat line of coke. Just getting fucked up.... Real twisted shit.

On the chorus I decided I wanted to add a little bit of variety and put in some sax backing. It was supposed to mingle with some vocals, which would have been a cool effect but the effect never really came through. I'm still not 100% on how to get a good sax sound out of a recording. At any rate, it does give this big echoy chaotic sound which I was pretty satisfied with so I left it in.

The solo section, I'm not so much a fan of. I think the guitar solo I did was pretty bad and amateurish sounding. There's this big buildup and then it's like this stupid meandering guitar solo that sounds like a 14 year old did it. I got my brother to record a guitar solo, which is technically a much better guitar solo, but honestly I wasn't a huge fan of the feel he went with in the context of the song. It felt a little bit too surf-y, and he didn't use any distortion. I kept it in and combined the two, which helped make things feel a little bit better, but I'm still not big on the part. There's also a harmonica bit. I kinda broke down and went back to my old standby of “well let's just make this part really noisy” which is a little bit of a crux, I admit.

In general I like the song. It's fun. It's fast, it's mean, and it breaks up some of the more introspective stuff. As well, I've just been feeling really uncomfortable with releasing an album of introspective naval gazy music. Like, I get it, I don't really have a platform. It's not like many people listen to me. Still though, there's so much awful shit going on in this world right now that I'm fortunate enough to be mostly sheltered by. I haven't participated in any protests either. I feel like I have to talk about it. In the end though I'm just busy with this self absorbed bullshit. I'm glad, then, that there's something political on this album that captures that feeling. I hope to be a little bit more worldly with my songwriting. I've done at least two very personal albums, and two high concept albums, I hope to maybe turn my focus outward into the world next time.
