I've been shilling my game via bluesky and twitter, figured I should probably also shill here, but I feel like things move slower on tumblr and people might frown upon the spammy nature of the quick vids that tend to do well on bluesky. This was a little longer form video just explaining the "auto aim" system that I've implemented. Figured I'd link it here!

There's going to be a cottage in Rosie Planet that you can buy. You can also buy furniture and upgrade it! It's not Animal Crossing or anything, but it's a nice little thing. I actually just recently wrapped up working on implementing all that stuff. It was a pain in the ass and not extremely fun! I always tell myself "I'd love to make something like Life is Strange or one of those first person horror games" and then I spend five minutes working on something with menus and detailed environments and I'm like "this fucking sucks". That said, it's a nice little side feature. Glad it's in there.
I don't have much to say about this song. I was a little drunk and riding high last night and didn't want to go to bed. I was like "yeah I could knock off a song right now" and I did. It isn't extremely complicated or long, but that was the plan from the get-go. I kinda had the vague idea of something chiptune-y already, kinda had this elevator music-y idea in my head too. The nice thing about chiptune is that all these different waveforms sound very fuzzy and warm, so it can sound pretty full without a very full arrangement.
In general, getting pretty excited. I'm very close to having finished all of the game design stuff on Rosie Planet. There's a song or two that I still need to finish, but otherwise it might just be a few months of polishing and testing.

I'm just finishing up the secret extra levels for my game (it's almost done!) and of course along with that comes the extra stage theme. These levels are pretty fast and pretty action heavy. They feel a little more mario-romhack-y than the main game. I figured the music should be fitting as well.
I knew I didn't want my typical stuff, and was actually hoping to get a friend to do a remix or something for the stage. Of course that's ... a little much work, and he was busy. Ah well. That means *I* have to do work? Well, shit.
All that said, I've actually been in a pretty good place creatively recently. Maybe it's the weather. I went through a long slump in terms of both mood and creativity, but at this very moment I seem to be out of it. That's good, maybe this game will get finished this century!
Again, maybe it's the weather, and maybe I'm getting older, but I've been re-evaluating a lot of 2000s music that I wrote off at the time. A lot of indie rock that I thought was cloying or twee, and also a lot of electronic music that I thought was garish or cheesy. At work I've had the kooks and the decembermists on the stereo. While working on the game I've been listening to this cybercore-trance compilation video. It's definitely skewed towards anime style music rather than just 2000s trance, but that's okay because I'm a weeb like that anyway.
So basically I figured I'd try writing something like that! It's a pretty simple song and I'm pretty pleased - not a lot to say on that front. I will say, I think it's a little basic when it comes to structure, but I'm not super familiar with the genre, and it's not something I'm super comfortable writing in. I tried to stay simple and just dress it up with what I do know.
I wish I had more to say about the production of this song, but to be honest it was very fast and breezy... so I dunno. I'll just throw the dancing lain gif here and hope it's deserving of it.

So there's gonna be a super secret moon hub world in Rosie Planet. It's gonna have this music in it. I guess it's not secret anymore, oh well.
Basically I wanted the music to be something stark and mean sounding but also mysterious. I kinda had the moon theme from FF4 in mind - there aren't many "moon themes" to use as a reference, after all. I like the idea of droney sci fi music. Blade Running 2049, for instance, has an incredible score (despite being composed by Hanz Zimmer, the music world's biggest hack!) I spent a lot of time getting the drone right. There's a cool album called Earth 2 which is apparently credited with inventing drone metal. Yes, it's a cliche in certain circles, but I really like it! Sometimes I put it on the stereo at work to piss off and confuse my co-workers!
I'm not 100% satisfied with this track. I'm posting it because I'm pretty sure I'll keep it the way it is. Sometimes the mastering makes the volume levels get kinda weird, but I'm not sure if I mind it or not. I think it makes for a neat hypnotic effect. On the other hand it ruins the all-important drone, so I'm not sure. Plus it's bad mastering, but that's okay because I'm bad at mastering. There's also a bigger issue where the phrasing feels a little bit awkward. It feels like the song should go in a direction and then it doesn't, and then it goes in that direction a little later. I don't really think the effect sounds intentional, even though I did intent for it to be like that. I'm still debating chopping it out, but it'd be pretty hard to do that without a lot of work, so I.... uh, really don't want to. My girlfriend said she likes it - and before you say "okay, she's your girlfriend", she actually liked this one, I can tell.

this might be the final boss music for Rosie Planet (my game). I'm actually not sure if I like it or not. I wanted to do something with a fast and intense beat. I kinda had an idea in my mind for what I wanted to make... I originally wanted to do something inspired by this . It kinda got away from me. You can hear a little of that in the chord progression, but not really. Honestly I'm considering taking another shot at it. Originally the song came out pretty bad. I did some heavy surgery to get it sounding like this, which I'm satisfied with but I'm not 100%. I'm a little worried it sounds british.
Still though, I also think maybe it'd be neat to keep it in the game. I think it's musically a different vibe from a lot of the stuff in the game, and I like that the game's got a good amount of musical diversity. It's definitely outside of my wheelhouse and I'm not fully comfortable with this type of D&B-ish thing, but I don't think it sounds all that bad. I juiced it up a lot with the mastering, maybe a little too much in retrospect, but I also figure a track like this shouldn't have much subtlety.

This is the music that plays in the highway level of Rosie Planet. I was originally trying to do something like Neon Nightriders in Turtles in Time. There's still a little bit of that in the song's DNA, but it's less laid back and not as insanely dope. Look, even Konami games can't make music like Konami games did anymore. Plus, I'm gonna be real: It shows up in one level, so it might have gotten a little bit less care.
That said, I don't know why I'm opening up with so many excuses! I think the song is pretty good! It wasn't working for a long time. I actually had it in the game in its "not working" state. I had a big problem with the drum track, which was a little too busy (this might not be the first time you've heard me say that!).
I redid the drum track and it still didn't sound right. Now it wasn't busy enough. The final song actually includes both, though one is more of a supplementary thing. Also, there's a third percussion track stuck in there for good measure. I know it sounds excessive, but the rest of the track is pretty spacious, so all of those drums get to pump to their heart's content. The new mastering job also helps, which focuses a lot more on said pumping.

This is the music in Rosie Planet for when you're going to be traveling around in the "snowcraft", which is the second overworld area. It's a bit more exploratory because you're not locked to driving on roads.
I wanted it to sound like the Final Fantasy 7 overworld music in that it's a little contemplative but gradually builds into something triumphant and then screws around for a little bit. It's been a while since I wrote this but I think I remember struggling a lot with it.
This is actually a song I finished a while ago but have reworked a little and am a little happier with it now. It was fine before but I felt like it was a little too thin. Now it feels a bit thicker. I am worried that the mastering is a little bit too thick in that you miss out on some of the little nuances, but I think it's probably the best I'll get. It's not like it's the most complicated track. It kinda lumbers around a lot, so it's not the end of the world if the mastering kills some detail. The important part is that it sounds big.

This has been something I've been meaning to do for a while. This is going to be the theme for the final level of Rosie Planet. I've been (sometimes) hard at work on the final level and I've just constantly had to imagine "some kind of cool jrpg music" underneath Rosie's chirps and grunts in the otherwise uncomfortable silent void.
The opening of Chrono Trigger has this really abrasive cool sounding synth for its main melody. It's apparently supposed to be a saxophone, but I think an actual saxophone doesn't really capture the otherwordly prog-rock sound that the song has. I started with that song as a bit of an inspiration and threw the saxophone part in the garbage. I wanted the synth sound. The signifier has now become the signified.
I'm really happy with this one, I feel like I was in a bit of a slump for a while. It ended up being more "Tales of" than Chrono Trigger, but I'll gladly take that. I really feel like I managed to capture what I was going for with this. At some point I kinda wrote myself into a corner, but I'm proud because I was actually able to then write myself out of that corner.
I'm a little worried that time will pass and the master will reveal itself as being bad, but hopefully I did an okay job? I really want to do this justice with the master because I'd hate to ruin something on the final step.

Okay, I rarely do this but I actually disliked my job on the most recent song so much that I'm doing a reupload of it. Of course, this is also a mix/master that I haven't let sit and haven't listened to it with fresh ears. Guess we'll see if it's good later!

This is going to be the music on the title screen of my next game (it's called Rosie Planet). Progress is like 80%ish? I'm a little sad because this song gets pretty lush, but it's not like people just sit on title screens listening to music (okay, yes, I know, you watched the Ocarina of Time title and you listened to the Halo music).

This is the music for my game when you get the airship. Spoilers! What exactly does getting the airship entail? Guess you'll have to play it and find out when it's ready! ;) ;) ;)
Really happy with this one! This was nice because it came after one or two tracks that I wasn't super hot on that I've written for the game. I felt like I was getting a bit burnt out, so it was nice on this one that it just sort-of happened. I'm once again ripping off the Sailor Moon Sailor Stars opening, which if you recall is the same thing that I ripped off for the car music. Also, if you do recall then wow, you're reading these things that closely?
I didn't have a problem with the car music, but I felt like I missed the mark on getting to the heart of what makes the original song special. Maybe I made my own original thing that has its own strengths, but fuck that. I wanted my pastiche!!
As I mentioned earlier, I really pushed myself to make something interesting, and more importantly a capital-S "song". This is the kind of thing that realistically should have vocals. I'm very proud of the anime-esque chord progressions I have going on. Specifically, I finally figured out how to do one of those jazzy half step turnarounds that gets used a lot in Persona and the like.
Ideally it would have had a disco style guitar wah-wah-ing over things, but I made a decision a long time ago that there's no live instruments on this soundtrack. Mostly it's because of laziness, but I feel like they'd sound pretty out of place. I was going for a very 90s synthy sound. Somewhere between adult contemporary cheese and Japanese PC game.
I gotta say, eventually I got to be on a hell of a roll with this song. I toiled away on the composition of this thing for like 5 hours, but after that things went really smoothly on the production end. There's minimal mixing. I was able to just drop these tracks into audacity and (mostly) let it rip. Sometimes things sound really muddy or thin when you put them in and you have to do all sorts of compression and EQing to get them to sound like they should. Not this one baby!

This is going to be the music for the haunted mansion levels in Rosie Planet. Definitely a little bit Castlevania inspired lol!!
Pretty happy with the way this turned out. It's a lot of fun and is a litle bit more complicated than I usually would do. Didn't really have a plan going into it, so that makes me doubly glad that it worked out. I had to actually think musically, which I do less than you'd think - making music and all.
I'm a bit iffy on the mastering. I wrote this last night and am listening to it right now with fresh ears.... Sounds.... fine I guess. Wouldn't mind if it had a bit of a thicker sound, but there's a lot going on so I'm just glad you can hear all the bits and it's not soupy.
