Kazuki: Ah... Hey, Kyuu-chan... I took care of those two jobs.

Kyuutarou: I’m relieved to hear you're actually able to do your job now. Now you just need to improve your skills.

Kazuki: I'm only second rate anyway. I'm nothing like the elite Rei. But he’s amazing, isn’t he? It hasn’t even been a month yet and how many jobs has he done?

Kyuutarou: 30 jobs.

Kazuki: Seriously? We're going to go out of business! He’s probably earned a lot already. Ah, but when I saw him here the other day, his beard and hair were still as much of a mess as ever. Is he even living decently?

Kyuutarou: I found a place for him to stay.

Kazuki: Huh? Kyuu-chan, do you also work in real estate?

Kyuutarou: Well, I have connections. Should I refer you too, Kazuki? You haven’t found a new place yet, have you?

Kazuki: Ahh... well I’ve been busy with work... Even though my last place ended up riddled with holes I really liked it.... *Sighs* Why did it end up like that? Ahhh... This sucks...

Kyuutarou: Oh, right. I have a request for you. Rei is perfect at his job but he never leaves his house so I never see him. So I'm sorry but could you take the information for his next job to him?

Kazuki: Yeah, sure... I was just wanting to complain to him about my wrecking house anyway.

Rei: Huh?

Kazuki: Don't just say "Huh?" What is this on the floor?!

Rei: Pizza.

Kazuki: The leftovers of one, right?! And that green stuff isn't basil, is it?! There's something awful growing out of it, isn't there? Aghh! And this delivery sushi is all dried out! Wah! And there’s a cup noodle with the soup left in it! Throw it out! Throw it out! Now what about the kitchen...? AHHHHHHHH! THE SINK! THE SINK IS FULL OF A STRANGE COLORED LIQUID!!! HEY, REI!! DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS PLACE!!!

Rei: Maybe I'll hire a maid?

Kazuki: Wait, wait, wait, wait! Have you forgotten what you do for work? Your place is full stuff like sensitive

documents and weapons! It would be bad if you let a normal person in here!

*Rei’s starts playing video game*

Rei: Oh well then.

Kazuki: Huh? Stop escaping from reality! *Sighs exasperatedly* Fuck, okay then! I’ll help you clean this place up!!

Rei: Thanks.

Kazuki: You're helping too, you shut in! And I'm going to tame that wild hair of yours too so be prepared for that!

Rei: *sighs in frustration*

Kazuki: So? How does it taste?

Rei: The curry... is a little spicy.

Kazuki: I thought you'd say that! But whatever.

Kazuki: If you're eating it so fast, then I guess it was worth making it. It felt nice to cook in such a large kitchen again anyway. Ahh... I want a kitchen as big as this in my new place. It would be impossible with my pay though...

Rei: You don’t have a place to live?

Kazuki: Because someone completely destroyed it!

Rei: Mmm...

Kazuki: Huh? Ohh! Are you feeling guilty?

Rei: Want to stay here?

Kazuki: Huh?

Rei: I have extra room.

Kazuki: You... wow...! You just want to use me as your housekeeper, don't you?

A3! Main Story: Part 4 - Act 14: DREAM CATCHER - Episode 10: Passing On The Baton

Izumi: Now then, it’s time we really start preparing for your performance.

Izumi: Let’s discuss the direction we want to take with the “Water me!” sequel.

Tsuzuru: For RomiJuli, the two went on a journey, grew and then returned to their hometown. Do you guys have any requests?

Yuki: Alibaba could be chasing after yet another oasis without bothering to look at reality.

Tenma: I think it’d be nice if Scheherazade also joined on this journey.

Muku: That does sound nice, it'd make it clear that she's free from the king. I hope Sinbad gets to become a sailor.

Kazunari: I’d wanna see what happens after Aladdin finds love~!

Misumi: I’d be nice if the Genie of the Lamp was freed from the lamp~

Kumon: I was an evil wizard in the rerun, is that what I’ll be this time too?

Muku: It’d be nice if Kyuu-chan could join us in the journey too, since we get this chance.

Izumi: I agree. Not adhering to rerun roles also suits the Summer Troupe more, doesn't it?

Kumon: Yay! I wanna join in on the adventure too!

Tenma: Also, I want to show more powerful comedy than we showed on the debut.

Misumi: It’d be nice if we had even more daily fun differences~

Kazunari: Since we know the characters already, we can get right to gathering materials!

Muku: It’s the usual schedule, but it’s making me a little jittery.

Yuki: There’s extra pressure when you think about the fact that everyone’s opinions of the performance will be reflected in our ranking.

Kumon: Will we really be okay if we do it as we usually do…

Tenma: We must absolutely pass the baton we received from the Spring Troupe to the Autumn Troupe. We can’t afford to slip and fall here.

Kazunari: I gotta make a sick flyer design, now that our rivals have increased~

Misumi: I have to do my best too~!

Izumi: (It can’t really be helped in this situation, but everyone is really feeling the pressure.)

Izumi: (I wish there was something I could do to dispel their anxiety…)

Izumi: The Spring Troupe also felt the pressure of the Fleur Award before starting with their practices.

Izumi: Organizing a workshop to help them remember what they felt when they first started acting seemed to have been a turning point for them.

Izumi: How about you also try doing something different from what you usually do in order to shift gears?

Muku: Something different from what we usually do…

Kumon: Like what?

Tenma: … I have an idea, actually.

Hi!  So I’m going to have to start by apologising – originally, I was hoping to scoop up some screencaps to underline my thoughts, but it’s a bit late over here so I’ll just go on memory, lol

Long story short: If Kazuki does experience any guilt over Rei’s arm, he internalises that feeling and keeps it very much to himself.  For me, I think it’s more likely that Kazuki just accepts that it was something that Rei felt that he had to do – and, as such, Kazuki supports him 100%.

Long story long: I’ve mentioned before that one of the really special things about Rei and Kazuki’s bond is the sheer level of trust they have in one another, even though they don’t always verbally communicate their hardships.  Kazuki and Rei are two men who, when they devote themselves to a decision, do so with almost terrifying conviction.

With the exception of Episodes 10 and 11, where their world was thrown into disarray because of Misaki, Kyuu-chan and Ogino, Kazuki and Rei, after committing their lives to looking after Miri in Episode 3, never question their choice.  Instead, they both accept their new dynamic as the new status quo and neither of them ever begrudge it (I mean, Kazuki ‘vents’ to Kyuu-chan in Episode 7 about having to do all the housework and there’s some tension in Episode 5 where they try to balance being papas with working, but on the whole, there’s never any ill will about the fact that they’re caring for a tiny person).  We can see, therefore, that Kazuki and Rei are both pretty flexible – Kazuki a bit more so than Rei, but if we consider that Rei, who was ‘like a robot’, signalled that he was Miri’s papa within a month of meeting her, we can appreciate that he’s pretty dang adaptable, too.

That trust is communicated in other ways, too.  Kazuki’s the one who collects their payments from Kyuu-chan (Episode 1).  Kazuki’s the one who keeps an eye on the household finances (Episode 5).  That alone speaks volumes.  They’re living under Rei’s roof.  In Episode 2, when Kyuu-chan asks whether they’re ready to take on a new job, all Kazuki and Rei have to do is briefly nod at one another to know that they’re on the same page.

But here’s the key point: when Kazuki or Rei makes a decision, the other doesn’t question it.  For instance, in Episode 3, when the family embark on a quest to return Miri from whence she came, Rei asks Kazuki whether he’s sure, but he doesn’t argue the point (admittedly, this was pre-Papa Rei).  In Episode 11, when Rei says that he’s going back to the Suwa mansion, Kazuki is momentarily surprised, but expresses his understanding – and then goes off to vent to Kyuu-chan.  Once again, we can see that the pair are forceful with stupid things – such as when Kazuki drags Rei to the daycare interviews in Episode 4, or hauls Rei around the zoo in Episode 6 – but when it comes to big decisions, they respect one another’s autonomy.

The way they respect each other’s boundaries is so, so important.  Rei was raised to have zero autonomy and yes, Kazuki takes liberties, but he doesn’t infringe on Rei’s lifestyle or try to force him to change.  Similarly, Kazuki’s lack of control over a situation led to the biggest losses in his life – it’s understandable, therefore, that he goes to extreme lengths to try and control what’s going on (as Rei notes in Episode 8, Kazuki’s ‘overprotective’).

How does this all relate to Rei’s arm?

In Episodes 10 and 11, Rei and Kazuki have their first real disagreements – because they’re literally fighting for their lives, including the life that they’ve built together with Miri.  They reach a conclusion quite rapidly; Rei expresses what he wants and Kazuki throws his heart into it, but lays down some ground rules.  Having done that, having sworn to Kyuu-chan that they’ll move forward properly and be a family, this time with renewed conviction, I think Kazuki and Rei both knew that the other was prepared to do whatever was necessary to secure that future.

Therefore, when Rei staggers out of the Suwa mansion, bloodied but free, and says, “I did it to myself,” Kazuki… gets it in a heartbeat.  He understands.  He appreciates that Rei did what he had to do.

And, rather than angst over that and wallow in a fugue, or make Rei question whether the sacrifice was worth it… Kazuki knows any sacrifice is acceptable for protecting the life that the trio have together.

Kazuki, therefore, supports his partner 100%.  The same way he always has done.  The same way he always will do.

“Kuu-tan!” you shouted, practically jumping in the air as you hugged Kuko tightly. The redhead immediately stiffened underneath your touch, trying to steady himself and not fall over as you laughed lightly.

“Y/N, what the hell!” he shouted, trying to shake you off. You playfully resisted for a moment before finally letting go of him, a small smile still playing at your lips.

“It took you so long to get here, I thought you would never get done with chores,” you pouted, crossing your arms. Kuko groaned as he shoved his hands into his pockets.

“Hey, don’t blame me, blame my old man. He’s the one that made me stay late and help clean the temple floors,” he mumbled, rolling his neck as if trying to get any cricks out of it. You reached over and grabbed onto his arm, nodding with determination.

“Alright then, let’s have fun tonight and forget all about our lousy days!” you chirped, practically dragging Kuko along with you.

You and Kuko had been friends for as long as you could possibly remember. Both of your families had been in the same social circles, so it only made sense that the two of you spent a lot of time growing up together. Even when Kuko left for a while to study at the temple, the two of you remained close.

Now that you were both older, your friendship had blossomed into something more, and although neither of you said it out loud, there were definitely unspoken feelings between the two of you. From your end, you knew that you had feelings for Kuko. You had a small crush on him when you were younger, and those feelings only amplified throughout your time in school together. But you loved Kuko as a friend too much to ever put your friendship at risk.

Kuko, on the other hand, was in a bout of denial. He knew that his chest hurt whenever he was around you, and he always found himself eager to show off, wanting you to pay attention to him. However, he refused to put the pieces together, not wanting to admit that he did, indeed have feelings for you.

It was much easier for the both of you to simply be friends.

“Dammit! Why is this so hard?” Kuko groaned, grasping onto the sides of the arcade game and trying to shake it. You laughed and shook your hand at him, waving him away.

“Watch and learn, Kuu-tan,” you said, rubbing your hands together as you pushed a coin into the slot. Immediately the bright colors and happy music began to play, both you and Kuko watching in anticipation as you wielded your crane, aiming for the best toy available.

“You’re too far to the left! You’re gonna miss it!” Kuko exclaimed, pointing at the glass.

“I got it! I got it!” you told him, pursing your lips together in concentration as you slowly moved the crane inch by inch before hitting the down button. The two of you watched with abated breath as the claw went down, paused for a moment, and then went back up with your toy safely in its clutches.

“Yes!” you shouted, fist pumping the air.

“How the hell did you do that so easily?” Kuko exclaimed, throwing his arm around your shoulder and shaking you as he grinned. You laughed and bent down to grab the toy, clutching it to your stomach with a smug smile.

“I guess I’m just amazing at the claw game,” you said, haughtily. Kuko tutted his tongue but continued to grin at you as he shrugged.

“I could’ve done it if you’d given me a few more chances,” he said, casually. Now it was your turn to playfully hit his shoulder with your own.

“Liar! You sucked,” you teased, poking his cheek and making him duck away from your touch.

“Whatever, let’s eat, I’m starving,” Kuko mumbled, hurriedly walking in front of you so that you wouldn’t see the hint of blush on his cheeks. Normally, Kuko could keep his cool around you, but whenever you touched him, it was like his body was on fire. Thankfully, the cool night air helped as it pressed against his warm cheeks.

“Wait, where should we eat?” you called out from behind him, glancing at the nearby shops as you continued to hug your prize.

“Mmm…beats me. Wanna get some fried chicken?” he offered, rubbing the back of his neck as he continued to walk down the street.

“Why are you walking away so fast?” you said, grumbling from behind him.

“Sorry, what? I can’t hear you from all the way over here,” Kuko teased, holding up a hand to his ear.

“Stop it, Kyuu-tan, I…” you trailed off as you realized what you had just said. You prayed that Kuko hadn’t heard you, but he was already frozen in place, staring at you with wide cat-like eyes.

You had always casually called Kuko ‘Kuu-tan’ which worked as a sort of nickname along with the honorific. But now, you had made the horrible mistake of calling him ‘Kyuu-tan’, effectively making a play on the words, and calling him cute.

“Did you just call me Kyuu-tan?” Kuko asked, in disbelief, a small smirk appearing at his lips. Immediately you held your hand up, waving him away.

“N-No, I didn’t, I said Kuu-tan, like I always do,” you hurried said, trying to change the subject. Kuko slowly stepped back towards you as he shook his head.

“No way, I heard you. You definitely said Kyuu-tan,” he said, wiggling his eyebrows. Now it was your turn to feel the heat burn your face as you took a step back, not wanting to be so close to Kuko. It would be easy to brush it off if it was a joke, but because you really did have feelings for him, it was a nightmare.

“Shut up!” you exclaimed, holding up your stuffed animal to block your face from Kuko’s view. Kuko only chuckled as he leaned over and slowly pushed down the animal, wanting to see your face as he teased you.

“Y/N?” he asked, feigning innocence. “Do you think I’m cute?” he smirked, making you huff and spin around.

“Of course not, you’re horrible! I hate you!” you exclaimed, starting to walk away in the other direction, heart pounding away in your chest as Kuko laughed, walking behind you.

“Don’t forget, I’m hot! Not cute!” he said, poking you on the shoulder from behind. You swiveled around to him, only to brush his hand away before hurriedly turning your back to him once more.

“Jerk…” you grumbled, not wanting him to know that you agreed with him. Kuko only grinned harder as he waved around you.

“Where are you even stomping off to?” he asked, smirking as he watched you get increasingly flustered from behind.

“I’m going to the fried chicken place! Where else?!” you shouted back, not stopping as you rushed away, wanting to avoid confronting your feelings for Kuko.

Kuko couldn’t stop the smile from reaching his face, knowing that you were avoiding him. He wondered why you became so flustered, and for the first time, he realized that you might have feelings for him as well. Although he knew that now wasn’t the right time to confess, he was finally able to admit that he did in fact like you, and he was now content in knowing that you might return his feelings.

You, on the other hand, were horrified. How you could let yourself slip up and almost confess to Kuko was beyond you, and you promised yourself that the next time you said anything like that to him, it would be on purpose.

And next time, you would be the one to make him flustered.

First Date

“Wow, Xing really does have a massive marketplace by the palace, doesn’t it?” Yona was excited once they stepped out of Kyuu Castle, where they had come to stay for the week. Just yesterday they had held her wedding ceremony to Jae-ha, so the butterflies were settling down in her stomach while also she kept flashing back to all those things that happened with her now husband last night.

Yoon nodded. “Yeah it’ll be interesting to see what the market has, plus they’re celebrating the war is over before it even really began.”

Jae-ha hummed, wrapping an arm around Yona. “Well a stroll around town could be fun, think of it as our first date, Yona-chan.”

Yona made a face at that. “Jae-ha, we just got married yesterday, how can that be a date?”

Zeno shrugged. “Technically the miss and Ryokuryuu have been sneaking around like the ladies of the night.”

Yona started choking at that as Jae-ha merely laughed. “Yes that is true we never have been able to properly court so better late than never right?”

Hak rolled his eyes. “Now he wants to be proper…”

Yona was all red at that, shaking her head to try and banish her blush as they headed towards the market area. But her mood was instantly changed when Jae-ha started complimenting one of the sales ladies. She puffed out her cheeks with jealousy, just sulking as several women gathered around Jae-ha getting praise from the Green Dragon.

Zeno seemed to be the first one to bring it up. “Miss it didn't bug you before right?”

“It does not bother me.” Yona immediately got defensive.

“Then why is the miss pouting?” Zeno asked.

“I AM NOT POUTING!” Yona shouted.

“You are too.” Hak said, munching on a rice ball and dodging Yona’s fists.

Yoon groaned as he called out to the Ryokuryuu. “Jae-Ha stop flirting before your wife smothers you and those women in their sleep.”

Jae-ha blinked, turning to the boy genius and humming. “… You know that would actually be hot.” He seemed turned on by the mere thought of it, not even paying attention to the girls looking disappointed when Yoon mentioned that he was married.

Hak smacked his forehead. “He would say that…”

Yoon rolled his eyes. “Only you would find mass homicide hot.”

Jae-ha made a dramatic pose. “But I'd see love loveliness as the light leaves my eyes…”

Kija immediately looked irritated. “You’re making the princess insecure!”

Yona seemed fed up as she growled suddenly. “KIJA I AM NOT INSECURE HE CAN DO WHATEVER HE WANTS IF I'M NOT PRETTY ENOUGH TO KEEP HIS FOCUS-“ she stopped herself when she realized she admitted why she was so on edge.

Yoon sighed. “And there it is.”

Hak shrugged. “Well we all know she's crap at hiding when she's upset.”

Yoon nodded. “I knew it was a matter of time before she snapped.”

Jae-ha frowned at that. “Yona dear what do you mean by that?”

Zeno shook his head. “The Ryokuryuu doesn’t have much skill in making sure a wife is well tended to.”

Jae-ha looked a tad insulted at that. “Now come on Zeno all I did was compliment them and Yona dear do you really think I don't see how lovely and charming you are?” he came over to pull his wife into a hug… And Yona immediately slipped out of his arms.

“Forget it go have fun with them obviously I'm too fat to ogle…” Yona huffed.

Jae-ha blinked, completely confused. “Whenever did I say that?”

“She's pregnant dumbass she already gets crazy ideas in her head.” Hak brought up, dodging an apple thrown at him by Yona. “See I’m used to her temper fits, pregnancy is just going to hyper intensify it.”

“Ryokuryuu knows how to treat women but a wife is not just any woman.” Zeno explained. “You’re not doing a good job of it. Don’t compliment other women in the presence of a pregnant wife for one.”

Jae-ha frowned, coming over and grabbing Yona’s hand. “Is that what this is all about? You don’t like you new husband admiring others around you? As if they could replace your loving beauty and the fact you’re carrying our little treasure.” He purred, wrapping an arm around the small of her back despite her protests.

Yona huffed, her cheeks stained red. “I told you, don’t force yourself just because we’re…”

Jae-ha smiled, dipping his head in to kiss her passionately. Which was just giving her flashbacks to last night and making her dizzy as he slowly parted his lips from hers to purr into her ear. “If anything I’m forcing myself not to pull you back to our room and banish every single one of those doubts in your mind by loving every inch of your beautiful body. After all there is only one princess of my heart that I allow all over my dragon leg…” he reminded her.

Yona’s blush got even worse at that, her eyes straying away. “I… I mean… I’m sorry I know it’s selfish but I just want you to myself and…” she finally admitted.

That made Jae-ha chuckle, nuzzling her hair as he kissed at her forehead. “Well that makes two of us then, shall I steal you away as we take a little stroll to the skies? After all I meant it that I’d love for this to be our first date.”

“R-really…?” Yona fluttered her eyes at him, her voice small. “Just you… and me?” It was rather rare for them to be alone, except for them sneaking around at night, like Zeno oh so pointed out bluntly.

“Of course, and if your perverted husband’s eyes aren’t on you, feel free to remind him that he’s yours by yanking me down and giving me a passionate smooch.” Jae-ha grinned as he gave her that mental image of just making out with him randomly in front of people. “You’ll make all the people around you jealous instead.”

“Ah… I… Well….” Yona’s face turned into a fireball, not sure she could be that daring.

“Please the pervert will probably get off on girls getting jealous the princess has him.” Hak rolled his eyes.

“At least Yona has a wedding ring to tell people that she’s taken.” Yoon commented. “You probably could use a leash for Jae-ha.”

“Actually for some males in Xing they wear wedding bands especially when going into battle to think of their wives back at home.” Sara, Princess Tao’s healer brought up. She had decided to stroll along with the group as she enjoyed talking to Shin-ah. “They sell some just over there.”

“Well now that’s a lovely idea then!” Jae-ha smirked, releasing Yona and guiding her to one of the vendors to choose a ring. “Choose whatever you fancy Yona darling, it’ll make me think of you whenever we are apart.” He brushed his fingers through her hair, finding the hairpin he gave her that served the same purpose.

“Well umm… H-here. How about this?” Yona asked, choosing a simple golden band but it looked similar to like how some pirates had golden earrings, it was why she choose it.

“Perfect, it looks lovely too.” Jae-ha hummed, holding out his hand to let her fit it onto his finger. “Just the right fit too.” He winked. “You know the size of my fingers by holding my hand I guess?” he teased.

‘No it’s because of all the sinful things those fingers did to my-‘ Yona had to stop her train of thought as she exploded into another blush. “… All of you should come with a warning label.” She mumbled, leaving it at that.

“Mmm you mean a warning label not to fall for my charm because it belongs to the princess of my heart?” Jae-ha purred, leaning in to kiss her again after paying the vendor.

Yona slapped her hands over his lips, still too embarrassed. “N-not so much in front of everyone… C-come on let’s go this is supposed to be a date, right? So let’s go see what else we can find here.” She smiled timidly, squeezing his hand and enjoying the look of his new ring on his finger. She glanced at her own wedding ring and was amused the bands matched. The butterflies were still in her stomach but slowly settling down, as no matter what happened she always seemed to be at ease with her Ryokuryuu by her side.

Kazuki: Now, you're thinking about this all wrong, Kyuu-chan. If you can’t turn her down, then you have to make her turn you down!

Kyuutarou: So you mean I need to make her hate me?

Kazuki: That’s right! To a woman who is blind with love, your words are all positive. So the quickest way to deal with it is to put a damper on her love.

Kyuutarou: Could you give me an example?

Kazuki: Let’s think about that together!

Rei: No plan.

Kazuki: You shut up!

Kyuutarou: But here's the problem. What makes people hate someone depends on the person.

Kazuki: Hmm, this might be cliche but... what about a dirty joke? Like, we could plant a whoopee cushion near Mei-chan or something.

Kyuutarou: No... I think if I did that...

*Fantasizing*

Kyuutarou: Okay, it's time for a break. Let's see... down I go! *fart* Oh no! *fart* I-I can't stop! (continues farting) Maybe I ate too many potatoes yesterday? Ah!

(farting continues in background)

Mei: Kyuutarou-san! You're farting in front of me! For you to show me such an unbecoming part of you it must mean that you have opened up to me, right?

*end fantasy*

Kyuutarou: I can just see it failing.

Rei: You used that sound too much...

Kazuki: Hmm. So being sloppy around her won't work either, huh? Then we'll have to think of another way to get her to hate you. Something that will make her viscerally think, "I can't stand being around this guy!" Rei, do you have any ideas?

Rei: Being an alcoholic womanizing gambler?

Kazuki:  Yes, yes. That type of despicable guy. They're really a problem, aren't they? I understand. Hey! Are you trying to pick a fight with me!?

Kyuutarou: No... I think if I did that...

*Fantasizing*

*Kyuutarou gulping*

Kyuutarou: Ah! Here I go! ALL IN!

Girl 1: Woah! What a high roller!

Girl 2: Kyuu-chan~! You're so manly!

Kyuutarou: Hehehehe! I'm going to beat this guy and take you both to my bed!!

Mei: Kyuutarou-san! Let me go to bed with you too!

Kyuutarou: I can just see it failing.

Rei: That type of guy is the worst.

Kazuki: No! I’m not that bad!

Kyuutarou: No, but we might be on the right track.

Kazuki: Huh, Kyuu-chan?!

Kyuutarou: Differences in sexual preferences can cause problems between men and women.

Kazuki: Ah! Oh, I see! That actually might work! Like if you're both masochists you wouldn't work well together or making her grossed out that you're such a lolicon... or... I know, how about being really into her playing your mother in ageplay?

Rei: What's... ageplay?

Kyuutarou: No... I think if I did that...

*Fantasizing*

Kyuutarou: Gagoo! Gagoo! Gagoo! Mama! I’m hungwy!

Mei: Yes, Yes~! I’m going to feed you now~!

Rei: Huh? What was that?

Kazuki: You're right. Mei-chan does seem like she'd be pretty open minded to that... Ah, so if dirty

jokes, sexual differences, and normal life differences won't work... then all that’s left is... taste!

Rei: Taste?

Kazuki: Like with clothes and stuff. Some weird clothing that would make you feel like "I don't even want to be seen near this person!!"

Rei: Like a comedian?

Kazuki: That’s right! Since they wear flashy suits with gold thread and constantly make dad jokes.

Kyuutarou: No... I think if I did that...

*Fantasizing*

Kyuutarou: Defendant, Mei.

Mei: Y-yes? What is it?

Kyuutarou: I sentence you to thirty minutes of rest. Kyu! (TN: both rest and sentence are pronounced the same Kyuukei)

Mei: *laughing* Kyuutarou-san! You're so funny!!

*end fantasy*

Kyuutarou: I can just see it failing.

Rei: Why was she a defendant?

Kazuki: Rei, please stop asking him to explain the joke.

Rei: Huh?

Kazuki: Welp, I don't know. I'm completely stumped. I mean this is impossible. Since she's just going to accept anything no matter what we do. Because she's in love with you Kyuu-chan! So she's going to love everything you do! Ah! It's impossible! I'm throwing in the towel!

Rei: Kazuki

Kazuki: Huh? What is it, Rei?

Rei: Is love uncoditional?

Kazuki: Huh? What do you mean? Is that a philosophical question?

Kyuutarou: Maybe he means... What would happen if I had a rival?

Kazuki: Oh, I see! So you mean that if there were someone else who was more attractive than Kyuu-chan, then it would make him less attractive in comparison?

Rei: Yeah.

Kazuki: So a comparison! So... we need someone who’s way more beautiful than Kyuu-chan...

Rei: Yeah...

Kazuki: when it comes to someone... way more beautiful...

Rei: Hmmm...

Kazuki: It's impossible!

Rei: It's impossible.

Kazuki: No, looks aren't the only thing that makes someone attractive! Wealth! I don’t know how much money Kyuu-chan has saved up but if they were a lot more wealthy than him!

Rei: Like an oil baron?

Kazuki: That's right, Kyuu-chan! Call an oil baron. I'm sure if you got an oil baron then...!

Kyuutarou: I don’t have those kinds of connections!

Kazuki: Of course not! And can't come up with any good looking guys I know that would be able to overshadow Kyuu-chan! Ahh!

Kyuutarou: So you're both out of ideas too?

Kazuki: Mei-chan is too tough. But isn't giving up an option too?

Kyuutarou: Giving up?

Kazuki: Yeah... Yadorigi Is doing pretty well as a normal cafe, isn't it? And recently you've had to do a lot of dangerous work as a leader... so why don't you use this as an excuse to wash your hands of it?

Kyuutarou: Wash my hands of it?

Kazuki: It actually seems quite feasible doesn't it? Maybe Mei-chan showing up here was fate!

Kyuutarou: Hehe...

Kazuki: Huh, why are you laughing?

Kyuutarou: It's ridiculous to think that we can have a happy ending.

Kazuki: A comedian and an oil baron... I thought we were on the right track but I guess not... Mei-chan must seriously be in love with Kyuu-chan.

Rei: Hey, Kazuki...

Kazuki: Hmm?

Rei: Is she really an ordinary person?

Kazuki: Woah, what are you saying? There's no way that Kyuu-chan wouldn't be able to see through an assassin, is there?

Rei: Even when he's that tired?

Kazuki: No, even then... Well...  he did seem different than usual...

Rei: Yadorigi’s competitors have been making moves lately. What if that girl was one of their spies?

Kazuki: Ah! Kyuu-chan is the type to get rid of witnesses... That's why he won't pull a gun in front of normal people... and if our rivals know that about him!

Rei: He's in danger.

Kazuki: Let’s go, Rei!

Rei: Yeah.

Kyuutarou: Well then, I’m done with work for the day.

*Mei-chan sighs*

Kyuutarou: I knew she'd be here. I can’t take my usual route home.

Kyuutarou: I'll go through the back parking lot.

Kyuutarou: Damn, I guess that didn't work. I can sense someone following me. No.... that's not all I sense.

Thug: You’re the owner of Yadorigi, Kyuutarou, right?

Kyuutarou: I've been ambushed?

Thug: Not going to say anything?

Kyuutarou: What do you want?

Thug: We're here to claim your territory!

*gun shots*

Kyuutarou: I must be completely surrounded.... I hear someone ahead of me too...

Mei: Kyuutarou-san!

Kyuutarou: There's a witness!

Kyuutarou: Mei-chan! Don’t come over here!

Mei-chan: But at this rate you're going to...!

Kyuutarou: I told you not to come over here!

Mei-chan: No! But I want to go with you, Kyuutarou-san!

Kyuutarou: *sighs* I should have just done that from the start.

Thug: Hey, Kyuutarou, are you done saying goodbye to your woman?

Kyuutarou: Yeah. I'll probably never see her again.

Rei: She’s not here, huh?

Kyuutarou: Yeah, it seems she finally got tired of me.

Kazuki: Huh? Even though she was so madly in love?

Kazuki: So it seems.

Rei: What happened yesterday?

Kyuutarou: Nothing really.

Kazuki: No... it wasn't nothing. We came to Yadorigi last night because we were worried... and we passed Mei-chan running away screaming.

Rei: It was like she saw a ghost.

Kazuki: Kyuu-chan, you didn't torture her did you?

Kyuutarou: Of course not. I just politely asked her to leave.

Kazuki: Politely... asked her to leave?

Rei: I'm... kinda scared.

Kyuutarou: What’s so scary about me?

Kazuki: Huh?! Nothing!

Rei: Nothing.

Kyuutarou: Well then, I have a new job for you guys, will you take it?

Kazuki and Rei: Y-Yes!

Yuki wonders how to act more sibling-like with Itaru to prepare for his role as Gretel, Tenma and Taichi try to help out.

Taichi: Sorry for barging in!

*sewing machine noises*

Yuki: Welcome back.

Tenma: Your sewing machine’s pretty loud.

Taichi: There sure is a lot of cloth on the floor.

Yuki: I’m making my costume right now, so don’t get in the way.

Tenma: Oh yeah, you’re entering that theme park contest, right?

Taichi: The concept’s based on the world of fairy tales, yeah? Who’re you going as, Yuki-chan?

Yuki: Gretel.

Taichi: The little sister in Hansel and Gretel!

Tenma: Isn’t that the story where the brother and sister eat a house made of candy?

Yuki: Your lack of knowledge is showing.

Tenma: That’s what they’re all like!

Taichi: But I think it’ll really suit Yuki-chan!

Yuki: I’m being careful with the costume’s design and I’m gonna put effort towards the performance to put my own spin on Gretel.

Taichi: So who’s gonna be Hansel?

Yuki: Itaru is.

Tenma: Sounds like an awfully harsh pair of siblings…

Taichi: Yuki-chan and Itaru-san have really attractive faces!

Yuki: Appearances aside, there’s no way I’d want a guy like that to be my older brother.

But… We’re supposed to be siblings who get along, so I want to prepare for that somehow.

Taichi: When you think of siblings who get along, don’t you think of Juza-san and Kyuu-chan? Why not use them as a reference?

Yuki: Like how?

Tenma: Maybe take a bath together?

Yuki: Uh…

Tenma: What’s so bad about that? It’s not like it hasn’t happened before.

Yuki: I don’t mind when we happen to bathe with each other by chance, but I’m not gonna go out of my way to ask.

Taichi: In that case, why don’t you try living in the same room as him?!

Yuki: Absolutely not. Have you seen that room?

Tenma: …After all this rejection so far, I’m really feeling sorry for Itaru-san.

Taichi: I feel bad for him.

Tenma: Are you sure you don’t want to stay in his room for a while? To be honest, there’s something I want to ask Chikage-san about.

Yuki: Something you want to ask him about?

Taichi: You want him to look at your assignments, don’t cha?

Tenma: How did you know?!

Taichi: We go to the same university, so I can tell by looking at you.

Tenma: I-I’m busy with work right now, so it’s a little hard to keep up with my classes.

Yuki: *sighs* I guess I don’t have a choice… Alright, I’ll go.

Taichi: Good for you, Ten-chan!

Tenma: We’ll just do it for one night for now.

Taichi: Do you think he’ll clean up if you ask and say it’s for the role?

Yuki: Hopefully. I’ll ask about it too.

I have returned! I was honestly gonna hiatus for a little longer but then Liber threw this cute Yuki at us and I just had to translate the card story! I probably will post translations irregularly compared to other translators (especially considering my job schedule) but I’ll do my best to get story parts out as fast as I can.

I’m not sure if anyone following this blog is interested in Show By Rock!, but I may translate Fes a Live content soon since I got back into SB69 recently.

Buddy Daddies AU – Delinquents in High School!

(Inspired by Crows Zero ❤) 

Kurusu Kazuki, a senior, is considered the king of Blue Sky High.  He might not be the toughest but he’s definitely the smartest and he uses that to his advantage.  Everyone fears Akasagi, his band of loyal followers

One day, an upstart freshman named Suwa Rei turns up at Blue Sky and starts taking everyone out.  For his own reasons, Rei wants to be the king of the school!

However, he’s unable to pick fights with Kazuki effectively because Kazuki always knows what Rei’s planning.  This is because Rei has literally no ability to strategise (“Attacking from the front again, rookie?  Try something else!”)

Rei’s Backstory

In this AU, Rei’s relationship with Suwa Shigeki is pretty different.  Rei still shows a lot of deference to his father/boss (he’s only allowed to call Shigeki ‘Father’ outside of work environments), but uh… he’s not descended from a line of hitmen, lol

Shigeki probably runs some fancy company?  I’m tempted to go with a very old, very grandiose publishing house because of the sheer number of books we saw in his study

In this AU, Shigeki takes a fair amount of advice from his right-hand man, Kaji Satoru, who is Rei’s mentor.  When Rei’s in his early teens, Satoru points out that Rei’s a shut-in and doesn’t have much experience of the world, which is going to make it tough for him to thrive in business environments where he’ll have to read people constantly

Shigeki asks what Satoru suggests and Satoru says that they should throw Rei in at the deep end and enrol him in a crummy all-boys’ high school called Blue Sky High.  Shigeki basically retorts that Rei will attend a dump over his dead body, but Satoru shoots back that, well, if Rei can survive even a year in an environment like that, he can survive anywhere

Shigeki agrees at last… and then lets Rei know that he’s being chucked out for a while

So Rei starts living with Kaji Satoru, because, of course, he needs back up.  He’s a bit suspicious because Satoru seems to disappear in the evenings… but on the whole, Satoru is a good adult in Rei’s life, mentoring him and training him to be physically strong

(Rei was trained to be physically strong because Shigeki’s of the mentality that a man can only thrive in business if he’s strong in every way – physically, mentally, emotionally, etc.)

Satoru’s the one who encourages Rei to become the king of Blue Sky High as this will prove to Shigeki that Rei will be able to take over the Suwa publishing house when the time comes

Poor Rei, however, has a deep, dark secret… he doesn’t know how to tell his dad that he’d rather read a manga than a novel…

 The Present Day

The troubles at school are escalating and one of the fights between Rei and Kazuki ends with a lot of blood being spilt (Rei was finally able to come up with a plan!).  The issue, however, is that Akasagi and Rei’s faction (which he didn’t even put together, by the way; it’s just a bunch of guys who thought that Rei was cool and started following him around – they call themselves Aoko) are now taking their fights beyond the school gates and causing mischief across the city.  This is a very bad look

As such, Kugi Kyuutarou, who attended and ruled over Blue Sky just prior to Kazuki’s enrolment, calls the pair out for a meeting.  Rei looks at the megane man and thinks, “Whomst??” but Kazuki is pretty terrified because he knows of Kyuu-chan’s reputation (also, Kyuu-chan encourages people to call him that so that he’s underestimated by outsiders)

Kyuu-chan tells the pair to KNOCK IT OFF, OR ELSE. Kazuki raises his hands, acquiescing – Rei, however, is about to give Kyuu-chan a bit of his mind when Kazuki drags him away, warning, “He’s the last person you want to irritate.  NINE are pretty legendary, you know.”

“NINE?”

“You out-of-towners don’t know anything! Listen.  You and I have pretty big groups, right?  But, back in the day, Kyuu-chan ruled Blue Sky with only nine people.  And they’re still loyal to him.”

Rei is confused as to why Kazuki’s suddenly doling out advice; Kazuki chirps, “Just looking out for my underclassman!” and swans away

A few weeks pass.  Akasagi and Aoko are finding the ceasefire tense, but they’re getting on with it.  Rei thinks idly of how empty the school day can feel without fighting and Kazuki contemplates ways to make a quick buck – he’s got rent to pay and his cleaning jobs aren’t quite meeting the mark

One day, Kazuki hauls Rei aside (Rei is pretty indignant about this) and comments how it’s obvious that Rei is pining to get his hands dirty.  Rei asks whether the truce is dead and Kazuki laughs.  “Not a chance, but I might have something even better.”

He leads Rei to an underground fighting ring. Kazuki comments that he knows Rei’s goal is to get stronger, but he can’t do that without fighting… so here’s a solution.  Rei thinks about the fact that he lost a spar against his mentor just the previous night, so he agrees to be one of Blue Sky’s fighters

This arrangement goes on for a little while. Each time Rei gets badly injured, Kazuki patches him up and encourages him to get back in the ring.  Rei queries why Kazuki’s being so helpful and Kazuki insists that Rei should stop asking questions and just respect his elders

“Sure… Kazuki-sempai.”

“Don’t take it too far!”

(Before this point, Rei just called him, “Kurusu!” with a lot of animosity)

Then… the next time Rei’s in the ring, he notices something in his peripheral vision.  Kazuki’s placing bets!  And he hasn’t shared the profits!  Rei is so mad that he deliberately loses the fight, making Kazuki lose a bundle

Afterwards, Kazuki is steaming.  He demands to know why Rei would do such a thing and Rei gets a bit lofty, saying that Kazuki shouldn’t be benefitting from Rei’s work without splitting the profits.  Kazuki snaps that the truce is off, regardless of what may or may not happen with NINE.  Rei grabs Kazuki and demands to know where his money is – sempai retaliates by headbutting Rei hard

Fighting breaks out across Blue Sky High again (some of the students are a bit relieved; all this truce stuff was dull!).  Now that Akasagi and Aoko are fighting again, the other factions also get antsy.  Kazuki’s irritated because spending all this time coming up with elaborate plans to deal with Rei is cutting into time where he could be making money. However, Kazuki is far too proud to consider giving up his crown

Then, things suddenly get hard for Rei – Satoru announces that he has to leave for a couple of weeks and suggests that Rei go back to the main house.  Rei says that he can’t possibly do that: he’s anticipating a final showdown between himself and Kazuki in the next few days and, besides, he wants to see what it’s like to live alone.  Satoru asks ARE YOU SURE? and Rei’s all YES I’M SURE and Satoru leaves Rei with some emergency numbers before scooting off

Within three days, Rei’s house is a tip.  He’s hungry!  He’s sad!  He desperately calls one of the numbers Satoru left for a cleaner…

And who should show up but Kurusu Kazuki?

Rei: (⊙_⊙)

Kazuki: (⊙_⊙)

Rei tries to close the door in Kazuki’s face; Kazuki sticks his foot in the way and barges in regardless, saying A JOB’S A JOB and that Rei’d better pay him fairly.  Rei demands to know what Kazuki’s doing there but Kazuki is just looking around the apartment, assessing the damage.  Then, he gets Rei to stand in one spot while he starts cleaning

“How have you survived while living like this, Suwa?  I thought you came from money!”

“It’s not always like this.  Usually, Satoru-san’s here and he takes care of this kind of thing…”

“So how long has this guy been away?”

“Three days.”

“THREE DAYS?!?”

Then, just when Kazuki’s nearly finished cleaning, he sees Rei boiling some water for instant noodles.  He flips out and ends up cooking for Rei instead (Rei’s fridge is full of some nice ingredients; Rei watches Kazuki cook very carefully to make sure there’s no poison involved – Kazuki takes it as an opportunity to give Rei a cooking lesson since Blue Sky is too rundown to have any facilities for Home Economics).  Of course, Kazuki ends up eating, too

Rei points out that it’s super weird that they’re hanging out like this when they’re supposed to be thinking of ways to kill each other.  Kazuki rubs the back of his head and says yeah, maybe, but work is work and, when Rei grows up a bit, he’ll be able to tell the difference.  Rei gets annoyed at being patronised – Kazuki realises that he actually feels a bit bad about looking down on Rei and comes to the conclusion that Rei might be a bit cool.  This is a bizarre epiphany for Kazuki so he changes the subject and asks what’s the deal with Rei and who’s this guy who normally cleans the house?

For reasons that Rei can’t quite pinpoint later, he ends up telling Kazuki about his dad and how he needs to rule over Blue Sky. Kazuki sparkles and says, “Wow, I’m a real thorn in your side, huh?”  Rei scowls. Then Kazuki says, well, let’s find out where your mentor is.  It’s pretty weird that he left without a word

Kazuki gets a laptop and starts tapping away; Rei is pretty fascinated and just like, “Huh… so you can do stuff like this too?” Kazuki gloats, “Yeah, your sempai’s an amazing guy~!” and Rei quips, “And a modest one.”

Soon, Kazuki’s able to pinpoint Satoru’s location and he laughs, telling Rei where Satoru is.  Rei’s like??  Where’s that??  Kazuki says that Satoru’s at some famously romantic location, which means he’s there with a significant other.  Then Kazuki sighs, saying that Rei’s mentor is lucky to have someone in his life

“What’s your story?  Why are you good at all of this stuff?”

Kazuki says wryly that he had to learn to fend for himself from a pretty young age.  He mentions blithely that his parents abandoned him when he was a child. Outwardly, Rei doesn’t express much – but he thinks that what Kazuki has just revealed is pretty shocking.  He wonders if Kazuki says important things casually as a defence mechanism – and then Rei realises with a start that he’s changing as he can now recognise things like when someone’s using a defence mechanism

Kazuki finally gets up to leave; Rei sticks his hands in his pockets and asks Kazuki if they’re back to normal tomorrow.  “Of course,” says Kazuki.  “In fact, let’s decide things once and for all.”  Kazuki names a time and Rei agrees, thinking that it’d be better to deal with Akasagi sooner rather than later.  The more time he spends with Kazuki, the more Rei finds his will to fight the third year diminishing

There’s an eerie stillness over the school… then, a few days later, the entirety of Akasagi and Aoko, who’ve made alliances with other factions in the school, show up in the schoolyard.  The fight is RIDICULOUS.  It is BRUTAL.  But then –

Who should appear but rivals from other schools?!?

It turns out that quite a few folk developed beef towards Blue Sky High students through the underground fighting ring – and a lot of them want to destroy Rei!  It turns into Blue Sky vs. The World!

Kazuki saves Rei and yells, “You owe me!”

Rei saves Kazuki about thirty seconds later and shouts, “My debt’s repaid!”

The two team up and try to go for the head honcho – but this kid plays dirty and is hard to get to.  It looks like it’s all over when –

ENTER!  NINE!

Kyuu-chan tells Kazuki and Rei that this has got messy; NINE wouldn’t get involved in some schoolyard brawl but people’s brothers, dads and uncles are showing up.  NINE will clear a path and suppress the damage; Rei and Kazuki just have to go for the big guy!

There’s a massive showdown with the head honcho. Rei and Kazuki are a beautiful team.  There is blood.  There is fire.  The word “Partner!” is said in earnest.  Ultimately, Rei and Kazuki win

Post-battle, everyone is on the ground, dead (or thereabouts).  They hear police sirens.  Kyuu-chan rocks up and says that Rei and Kazuki, as two ringleaders, have to get out of there. Rei and Kazuki look at each other, share a cool-guy-nod, and vamoose

The police make many, many arrests

Post the big battle, there are some huge changes at Blue Sky High.  Students clean up the school and there’s an attempt at actually bringing in a syllabus. Students are disciplined appropriately. This is all spearheaded by the new headteacher, Principal Hanyu, who is extremely kind but who has ‘accidentally’ let the students know that she’s super strong

Kazuki and Rei actually get an education, lol.  They also bond with the people of Akasagi and Aoko who were loyal to them

All of a sudden, it’s graduation day.  Rei goes to find Kazuki and Kazuki’s like, “Hey, look what the cat dragged in!  You must be sad that your favourite sempai is graduating, huh?” and Rei says yeah, it stinks that Kazuki’s leaving as things won’t be as interesting anymore.  Kazuki’s a bit ! but returns Rei’s sentiments; he’s definitely never met anyone as wild or interesting as Rei

Then, Kazuki asks whether Rei’s done at Blue Sky and will be going back home.  Rei says yes – and lets Kazuki know that his mentor’s getting married.  “Some men have all the luck,” Kazuki grumbles

Kazuki says that he has a feeling that he and Rei will run into each other again, someday.  Rei looks sceptical and Kazuki’s like, “What?  Are you worried that you won’t recognise me?  Okay, let’s get a memento.”  He grabs Rei’s phone, yanks Rei into the frame and takes a selfie of the two of them together.  Checking the screen, Kazuki grimaces and says, “Well, I guess that’ll do.”  Rei asks doesn’t Kazuki need a memento, too? Kazuki answers that Rei shouldn’t worry; Kazuki’s texting the photo to himself

“So I have your number?”

“Pfft!  Only for emergencies.  Got it?”

Rei calls, “Thanks for your hard work, Kazuki.”

Kazuki stops dead and turns around.  “WHERE’S MY RESPECT?”

Rei shrugs.  “You’ve graduated now.  As far as I’m concerned, I don’t need to call you ‘sempai’ anymore.”  Kazuki rolls his eyes, but, as he walks off, he feels pretty excited about the next time he’ll cross paths with Suwa Rei.

 Epilogue

Several years pass…

Kugi Kyuutarou finally achieves his dream of opening his own café – Mistletoe Café.  He invites a particular pair of idiots along to the opening and so, Kauzki and Rei finally meet again (neither changed their number in all that time, but they didn’t find occasion to call each other, either)

Kazuki and Rei end up bumbling around together for a couple of years, for whatever reason.  I think Rei might have found the wherewithal to tell Shigeki that he wants to start his own publishing house and focus on working with mangaka instead. Rei’s contemplating opening a bookshop – but wait, wouldn’t it be more successful if it had a coffee shop attached? Kazuki is pretty good as a front-of-house guy.  Business partners?

And then, Miri falls from the sky…

 Notes

Throughout this story, there are side scenes of Rei feeding and talking to stray cats.  Older Rei definitely has a cat or two

So, Ogino!  He is an extremely creepy English teacher at Blue Sky High.  He’s a big fan of the Suwa publishing house and is hard on Rei since he wants Rei’s words to be more satisfactory.  Also, no one has the temerity to start fighting in any of Ogino’s classes.  He’s a bit of a side character and is just there to add even more conflict to Rei’s life

I guess Kazuki would need a bit more character growth?  But the main change for him is probably how he grows to admire Rei and see him as an equal. Maybe, after Principal Hanyu revolutionises Blue Sky, Kazuki hangs out at Rei’s house from time to time?  That could be pretty fun!

In canon, Kazuki and Rei are juuust too far apart, age-wise, to have been able to attend the same high school.  However, this is an AU, so we can fudge the ages!

Akasagi comes from a dodgy portmanteau of ‘red’ and ‘rabbit’.  Lily draws Kazuki in a lot of bunny-themed stuff, so I guess that’s the animal I’d most likely associate with our beloved man.  Besides, LU BU’S horse was literally called Red Hare, so why not!

Aoko is a dodgy portmanteau of ‘blue’ and ‘cat’ (for obvious reasons).  Kazuki was VERY ANNOYED when Rei’s followers called themselves this because hello? The school is called Blue Sky? And then the rookies have the GALL to add ‘blue’ to their name?  It makes them sound too official!

In this AU, Kazuki and Rei both run around in ponytails while they’re teenagers (PLEASE SEE LILY’S ART FOR REFERENCE)

Manga the Week of 10/13/21

SEAN: Mid-October and we’re still seeing a lot of great books.

ASH: I’m okay with this, although I am terribly behind.

SEAN: Yen On has a debut, with a title that might sound a bit familiar. I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss (Akuyaku Reijo nano de Last Boss wo Kattemimashita) is a light novel with a premise that readers are no doubt aware of. This one’s quite popular, though, and an anime was just announced, which is a rarity for villainesses not named Catarina.

Other light novels next week include Banished from the Hero’s Party, I Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside 4, The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy 4, Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World 7, and The World’s Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat 3.

As for Yen Press, they have Angels of Death 12 (the final volume) and Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun 10.

ASH: Good reading for the spooky season.

SEAN: Viz Media gives us Call of the Night 4, Case Closed 80, Fullmetal Alchemist: A New Beginning (a new light novel in the series Viz started back in the 00s), How Do We Relationship? 4, Komi Can’t Communicate 15, the 10th and final volume of Pokémon Adventures Collector’s Edition, and Requiem of the Rose King 14.

ASH: Always glad for a new volume of Requiem of the Rose King! And thanks for pointing out that the Fullmetal Alchemist novel is a new volume rather than a new printing; it’s been a while since I’ve read any of those.

ANNA: Agree about Rose King, I need to get caught up.

MICHELLE: Same here!

MELINDA: Okay, Requiem of the Rose King, yes please. Also, I can’t believe I never really got into that Fullmetal Alchemist light novel series. I will have to check it out!

No debuts for Seven Seas this time around, but we do get Arifureta: I Heart Isekai 4, Happy Kanako’s Killer Life 2, High Rise Invasion 19-21 (which wraps up the series), The Invincible Shovel 2, Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka 12, Non Non Biyori 15, Precarious Woman Executive Miss Black General 7, The Tale of the Outcasts 3, and Wonder Cat Kyuu-chan 3.

ASH: I still need to check out Wonder Cat.

MICHELLE: Jeez, volume two of Happy Kanako already?!

SEAN: One Peace debuts Higehiro: After Being Rejected, I Shaved and Took in a High School Runaway (Hige o Soru. Soshite Joshikousei o Hirou), the manga adaptation of a popular light novel which has been licensed in English by Kadokawa’s new publishing arm here. The title is the plot.

Kodansha, in print, has Knight of the Ice 7.

ASH: Yay!

ANNA: One of the few series I’m not behind on, it continues to be delightful.

MICHELLE: I’m behind, but I still say “Yay!”

SEAN: Digitally there is a bit more. The debut is Our Bodies, Entwining, Entwined (Karada, Kasanete, Kasanatte), a “shousei” title from Palcy. A woman who was dumped years ago for being “boring” at sex is in a new relationship, but her boyfriend also has issues having sex. Can the two of them satisfy each other?

Also digital: Altair: A Record of Battles 24, Ex-Enthusiasts: Motokare Mania 6 (the final volume), Giant Killing 27, My Pink Is Overflowing 5, Perfect World 8, Police in a Pod 5, Space Brothers 39, Wave, Listen to Me! 7, and Yamaguchi-kun Isn’t So Bad 3.

MICHELLE: I thought Ex-Enthusiasts: Motokare Mania was quite fun and, of course, I adore Giant Killing and Wave, Listen to Me!.

J-Novel Club has two debuts. Hell Mode ~The Hardcore Gamer Dominates in Another World with Garbage Balancing~ (Hellmode ~Yarikomi Suki no Gamer wa Haisettei no Isekai de Musou Suru~) is about a hardcore gamer looking for a challenge, who finds himself reincarnated in a very difficult game world.

The other is Maddrax, a German SF series from J-Novel Pulp.

Also out next week: An Archdemon’s Dilemma: How to Love Your Elf Bride 12, Black Summoner 6, How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord 14, and the 8th manga volume of Infinite Dendrogram.
