Did you know that, in the late 70's, there was a violent rally held by angry rock fans in which they blew up disco records to "kill the disco movement" in response to it's place in both gay liberation and afro/latino empowerment plus their belief that it was destroying rock and roll?
Discotheque originated in french nightclubs in the twenties, thirties, and fourties. However, it was the mid seventies that brought about a strong American take on the genre. Disco was growing in the underground club, bar, and punk scene. Featuring rhythmic drums and african influenced beats, it was rapidly gaining popularity in the dance scene and massively outselling rock and roll. Rockers felt that switching up musically to sell better was synonymous with selling out. Plus why would they bother? They said that disco was a mindless fad compared to their superior lyrical work and sound.
For a few years the conflict of genre built tensions. Producers wanted more and more disco funk. Bringing about an age of gay liberation and putting black and brown artists in the spotlight, featuring openly queer black artists like Sylvester and Martha wash. Rock was being called on much less. It all came to a head in July of 1979.
youtube
"Disco Demolition Night" took place at Chicago's Comiskey Park between baseball games on July 12, 1979. It was organized by radio host and dj Steve Dahl. Calling for the death of disco, the end of the "musical disease." Dahl claims it was nothing but a harmless stunt; continuously denying its racist and homophobic nature.
The day after the event Dahl hosted his usual morning broadcast. He began by reading the headlines reporting the previous night's events, mocking the coverage, saying, "I think for the most part everything was wonderful. Some maniac cohos got wild, went down on the field. which you shouldn't have done. Bad little cohos"*
To my understanding Steve Dahl never renounced his feelings towards disco nor has he shown any remorse for his actions. Seeing as he still sells merchandise featuring the event on his website. Including hats and tshirts commemorating the night of 7-12-79.
Rolling Stone Critic Dave Marsh attended the event and wrote at the time, "Your most paranoid fantasy about where the ethnic cleansing of the rock radio could ultimately lead... white males 18 to 34 are the most likely to see disco as the product of homosexuals, black and latins, and therefore they're the most likely to respond to appeals to wipe out such threats to their security."
Fans rushed the field brandishing tshirts and banners stating "Disco Sucks." A notable phrase used in connection to the movement to kill disco. Still heard in passing to this day. The phrase may seem harmless today noting that we use "sucks" so casually. It is worth noting that at the time it was new slang; directly and intentionally homophobic. It is often forgotten exactly what we're accusing the subject of sucking.
The effects of Demolition Night swiftly radiated out into the media production circuit. Sending Disco back underground to the safe havens of queer clubs and bars, like the loft and stonewall, as well as the subterranean punk spaces of their origin.
Today it's commonly believed that disco's popularity did die in 1979. Producers, studios, and clubs started rebranding the genre as "dance" music. Even pioneers of disco became disillusioned with the genre noting that media producers had oversaturated disco sound, wringing out any cultural significance it had at the start. Making way for hip-hop, pop, and punk.
However, dancing to the selections of DJs had integrated into culture in major urban centers. As an activity it wasn't going anywhere. With the inability to capitalize on it the culture discovered a new lease of life, free of the labeling and profiteering. Disco may have been dead, but its influence was alive and well.
To learn more:
A more extensive account of the culture and history can be found in this book "Love Saves the Day" by Tim Lawrence.
I also recommend this playlist curated by the Woody Guthrie memorial museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma during their exhibit of the same name earlier this summer. Exploring the history and sound of disco.
TL;DR - Disco was major to gay and poc empowerment. Then a bunch of people rioted and blew up disco records at a baseball game leading to the decline of Disco's popularity in mainstream media.
*Coho - noun; a person or thing that shows the existence or direction of a trend - (another definition is a kind of salmon but i have the feeling that would be inaccurate as funny as it may be)
#long post#multimedia essay#disco wasn't profitable anymore but it was free to grow on its own#in that way i feel that a lot of us on Tumblr can appreciate it#it's just something i want more people to know about#disco#disco Demolition Night#rock and roll#rock#punk#gay liberation#poc#latino#queer culture#stonewall#Spotify

I actually understand exactly where you're coming from. I find myself checking the wiki for more info on sims in TS4 and leaning heavily on other people's interpretations sometimes whereas I have a very clear understanding on who sims from TS2 franchise were. And what's crazy is that even the more popular sims in this community are popular not necessarily because of who the sims team "intended" them to be, but because of the fandom's interpretations/ability to fill in the plot holes.
One thing the sims team is going to do every time is give us some underdeveloped, half-baked townies!! (Although for some reason, in my opinion, they really delivered with the Horse Ranch townies for some reason?!)
This is a really interesting question! I think Mortimer listens to mostly wordless music: classical/baroque music/traditional Spanish-influenced instrumental music. Bella would also love instrumental music with traditional Latin/Spanish influence, but I think Bella also enjoys lyrical music/pop music with a good beat as she is a vivacious firecracker who is full of life and the life of the party imo! If they're listening to music with words (Bella does this more than Mortimer), they're probably listening to music sang entirely in Spanish/music by Spanish-speaking artists nearly every time. In fact, I personally think the Goths would speak Spanish mostly at home as well because I've never seen any of them as white people (yes this includes Mortimer!)
As for Cassandra and Alexander, I imagine they both enjoy alternative music in general - early 2000s pop punk is a shared love, and this is mostly Cass having an influence over her baby brother because he was a kid when those bands were popular haha. I could see them both screaming the words to any song off of MCR's "The Black Parade" album. But that's about as far as their similarities go: as they get older the differences in their personal tastes of music are more prevalent.
Cassandra loves classical/instrumental music like her dad. She also loves death metal and screamo, the more avant-garde the better (if most people would find it weird, niche, wild and/or loud, she enjoys it.) I don't listen to this kind of music, so I don't have an example off the top of my head but as a little bonus: I think Yuki Behr turned her onto Baby Metal lmao.
Alexander, on the other hand, likes a wide variety of music. I think he's probably the biggest "music lover" in his family who kind of just enjoys different stuff all across the board. He learned how to play piano through classical and baroque music, but he's not listening to that in his free time: he finds it far too rigid/restrictive. His favorite kind of music would probably be alternative rock that leans more indie/acoustic/folk like Hozier or Lord Huron. I think he enjoys some pop music, so long as it has good lyrics. He also was in drama club in high school and I think he enjoys several musicals! I also see him especially into stuff from the doo-wop and Motown era: anything between the 30s and 60s, and that's why I always say that Stephen Sanchez's music reminds me of the kind of music Alexander would make due to its spanish/doo-wop/pop fusion. (Listen to his new album "Angel Face" and you will get what I mean! I actually would consider Stephen Sanchez's singing voice/songs to be my Alexander Goth's voice claim!)
But those are just my personal takes and how I play them!
I don't have a ton of my own headcanons about Jesminder! I think her and Arun probably cause bisexuals to panic as they're both stupid hot!
All jokes aside though, I think they're criminally underrepresented townies. Jesminder has always struck me as this multi-talented person who lights-up-every-room and has that special kind of vibe that you can't put a name on - she just is charming, drawing people to her. I don't think she's a talker so much as she's a listener; she's wise and when she speaks it's because she actually has something to say (she doesn't just talk to talk). I think because of this, I imagine that as a bartender she has had many people confiding in her/asking her for advice lmao. She's the kind of person that calls you sweetheart and then will drop the most provocative, to-the-point rhetorical question or advice on you and it will change you forever you know?
And Arun is just like this super sweet hipster tech guy who probably drinks kombucha, rides his bike to work, and loves his wife like crazy and can't wait to be a dad. He has no idea how he bagged this woman but he is not about to question it in case she realizes she could "do better" (they're annoyingly in love though and she does not like when he jokes like that lol).
Someone needs to make a story that focuses on them because I think they seem to be an adorable couple with a lot of potential. I just think they're neat! (djservo's "Bros" story with Joaquin and Sergio has given me some Arun and Jesminder content but I need more!!!!)
#'I don't have a lot to say about Jesminder' I say like a liar and then word vomit. Lmao. Sorry about that!#the goths#the goth family#jesminder bheeda#arun bheeda#bella goth#mortimer goth#alexander goth#cassandra goth#sims headcanons#atfs ask#anon

My Story With Encanto
(I apologize for not posting this yesterday! I was so busy because of holiday but here it is now ❤️)
How I Discovered Encanto
I will be completely honest with all of you, I've never really been a big fan of Disney Animation Studios (I ADORE Pixar though). Not only because of the company itself, but because a lot of the movies didn't resonate with me, particularly the modern ones. The only modern ones from the studios I like are Tangled, Zootopia and Moana so when I heard of Disney making "Encanto", I wasn't too interested. The only thing I knew about it was a particular song trending wildly on Tik Tok, (you know what it is 😂). I had no idea it was from Encanto originally, I thought people were cancelling Bruno Mars over something and they made a song about it 😂.
That was until my best friend got into it in late January/early Feburary and reccomended it to me. We have similar taste but when it came to this, I was skeptical. But, I gave it a chance! I watched it on Disney+ and I think at first, I wasn't really that into it. I liked it! It was just one of those things I needed to watch again to get the full grasp of, if that makes sense.
So. near Valentine's Day I watched it again with my then girlfriend, and that's REALLY where it hit me. The story, the characters, everything felt so real to me even though I am not from a Latino household. That's how the hyperfixation started!
Why I Love This Film
There is something so beautiful when a movie reflects a culture different from yours and does it as well as this one. I was so revealed when I saw actual Latin Americans, actual Colombians, talking about how authentic this movie was. It opened my eyes to a different view of life and family, it has filled me with so much sympathy for these families who have to endure generational trauma and oppression that impacts them in so many ways. The cast of characters is also SO diverse and feel like genuine people, not some walking stereotype.
Speaking of characters, I cannot tell you how much I've resonated with Mirabel and her story. It's rare for me to relate to Disney protagonist so this was a huge surprise. Not only do we both have curly hair, hazel eyes and glasses, but I understand wholeheartedly feeling out of place in your own family and feeling like you'll never be good enough. I am the only adopted biracial child in my family, I am also disabled and LGBTQ+, I also do not share the same religious views as most of my family so growing up, I struggled and still struggle so much with finding my worth and purpose. Mirabel also has the same exact personality that I had when I was younger. Energetic, bubbly, and kinda got on people's nerves (I'm also the youngest of three brothers) 😂. I'm also sensitive and try my best to understand different perspectives. (We're also both Pisces??? I swear, the similarities are a little scary).
Another character that doesn't remind me of myself, but of my oldest brother is Bruno. He doesn't have the same personality or anything, but how my family treats him as "the one we don't speak to or about except on holidays" reminds me so much of how the Madrigals basically act like Bruno doesn't exist and if he does, that's bad. My brother and I are both LGBTQ+ but since he was the first one to come out, my parents shut him out and understandably, he distanced himself greatly. Even though he was around (kind of?) when I was growing up, he always felt so far away and I never understood why until I got to an age where I could comprehend it. He lived about 2 hours away and I wasn't able to visit him that often because of distance and my mom thought he would be a "bad influence".
Isabela reminds me of my current best friend when we were both in middle school. She was kinda popular and treated as a golden child and that made her act well.. not too nice. (But I wasn't that nice to her either). Especially when were in music class together, our teacher at the time always pinned us together for some reason, and that made us absolutely HATE each other. It was actually when she got involved with this obnoxious boy that broke her heart where we found middle ground 😂 and realizing that we have more in common then we thought. (This is the same friend that introduced me to this movie!)
This may be why I latched onto Isabela, Mirabel and Bruno the way I did.
I will admit though, when I first watched the movie, I didn't think I would like Isabela as much as I did. I feared that she was going to be this hyperfeminine "mean girl" stereotype Hollywood loves to shove in our faces. I am so happy they didn't do that with her, her arc and character as a whole feels so relatable and raw.
And of course I love everyone else! Luisa is such good representation for those of us who take on more than we need to, older sibling or not. It's so awesome to see a muscular woman with a lower voice in a Disney film! The dynamic between the couples in this movie feel so warm and again.. authentic. It's so adorable!! I wish we could have gotten more of the warm colored family but I understand why we didn't. Maybe in a series we will!
The music is also just... way too good 😂. Another thing is that I barely knew who Lin-Manual Miranda was, I knew what Hamilton was but I never got into it because musicals were just not my thing. (I've started to get interested in them because of Theatre class and this movie).
But I knew this was a musical of course, and I did not expect I would love the music this much. I still listen to the soundtrack and I love all of the songs the same! I swear this is the only movie where the main character has a song that I can sing in my own range 😂 along with some of the others. Waiting On A Miracle and What Else Can I Do? in particular struck me (and they're the most overlooked!)
Why I Love The Fandom
Despite the really weird and problematic a part of this fandom has done, I can't deny the sheer amount of creativity, passion, love, and understanding this fandom has. From the fanart, fanfictions, headcanons, fan events, and fan made songs, this is one of the few fan bases that have made me feel like I was part of a family. I've met so many wonderful people in this community and learned so much about Latin American culture from being part of this and I am so thankful.
No matter how much time passes, all of this will have a special place in my heart.
I Love You All ❤️

My Opinions on Dream Academy:
The Contestants:
Top 10:
1. Sophia:
THE IT GIRL. She's an ultimate ace. She sings, she dances, she can do it all. There's nothing she can't do. Everything you can think, Sophia can do. She cooks and she is so well-spoken, articulated and sophisticated(maybe because her dad is a well-known filipino politician and her mother is an actress), definitely leader vibes. She is so caring and kind with everyone and it's just so talented! Sometimes, I even wonder if she's human! Sophia Elizabeth G. Laforteza, real human beings got to have flaws! Why don't you have any???
2. Lara:
She serves vocals, and dance, and visual, and VOCALS. She just has so much attitude. I don't know how to explain it but she has an aura, a whole vibe around her that just makes you want to watch her more. She just seems so confident(see what I did there) and she just looks like a sassy boss ready to run the world. She deserves all the good things in the world!
3. Daniela:
She can do it all! She can sing well and dance almost flawlessly. Definitely competing with Megan for Main Dancer position. Having said that, I knew she was popular and talented, but she never really got much my attention. I feel neutral about her. My only problem with her is that, no:She does not represent latam. Katseye does not have a member that represents latin america. That would have been the case only if Samara from Brazil or Celeste from Argentina(or both) made it to the final lineup. "Latina" is not just some label you can go and identify yourself as. In the latin community there is a general consent when someone can be considered latino or not and Daniela does not meet all the requirements. You don't need to be born in a latin country but If you don't know how to speak portuguese(brazil's official language), french(haiti's official language) or spanish(all the other latin america's countries official language) in a higher level than what Daniela gives, don't have a close connection to latin america(parents or grandparents) and never been to one latin america country and don't know and understand their culture and at least a few of its deepest aspects from UP CLOSE and their story with collonization, legacy and the current overall situation of the continent and reality of the people who live there, you're not latino. Simple as that(and as far as I'm concerned, it works like that for basically anywhere in the world, with little variations). Daniela's level of Spanish so far seems to be the basics of the basic. Me, a brazilian, native portuguese speaker, that watched many spanish speaking shows like Violetta, Soy Luna, Bia, Soy Franky, Kally's Mashup, Club 57, etc, I seem to have a better spanish than her. Also, Daniela knows Cuban music and dances from her household...What about Venezuela? Has she never been to any of those countries? Not even once? Music and dancing styles are only two aspects of the culture, what about the rest? What does she know about it? And knowing about the USA's education system, specially in regards to geography, I wonder if she can even point out Cuba and Venezuela on a map. And y'all can't blame me for being skeptical about it. Everybody knows USA are made fun of and seen as an international joke because of how dumb their education system is and how low the overall citizen knowledge is(some americans themselves recognize it). I know there are stupid people everywhere in the world, but USA is something else. Just watch "* type continent here * according to Americans" and "What is the dumbest thing an American has ever said to you?", you'll be surprised. I know we can not generalize and not all Americans are like this, but you can't deny there is a reason why USA has that kind of content made about them the most. It is a real problem and I hope they can fix it soon.
Back to the latina topic, take a look at Rachel Zegler, Jenna Ortega and Anya Taylor-Joy for example. Rachel Zegler doesn't represent Colombia and Jenna Ortega doesn't represent Mexico but Anya Taylor-Joy represents Argentina(according to most people). That because unlike Rachel and Jenna, Anya Taylor-Joy speaks fluent spanish and lived in Argentina until she was six years old and still travels there from time to time. Rachel and Jenna have latino parents. That's it. That's all. Unlike Anya, that is not enough to make them fully latina.
"Oh but in the US only being descendent already counts and..." Exactly. In the US. In the latino countries, that are the ones that should be taken into account because they are the latinos, if someone like Daniela says they are latino in a latino country the real latinos will laugh at her. Just because you have the "stereotypical latina look" that doesn't make you latina(which is proven that now that being latina is considered "trendy", a lot of girls try to copy the superficial latina look of what they think latina girls look like reinforcing sterotypes of what they think being latina means and people comment "gosh you are so latina")because in latin america, "latino" is not an ethnicity:Latinos comes in all packages:White, black, brown, due to collonization and the mix of europeans, indigenous people, asians, black people, etc. What Daniela does is the same thing as a brazilian girl whose parents moved from Japan to Brazil and speak japanese fluently but the girl is born in Brazil and thinks she's so japanese just because she has a japanese appearence, speaks basic japanese, watches anime and listens to j-pop. Same thing with Daniela thinking she is latina just because she "looks" latina, her spanish skills so far are ordinary and she knows some latino songs(you can't speak FOR them if you can't speak TO them in a higher level).
The term "Latino(a)" was first used in France to refer to people from Latin America. Other countries that speak languages that came from Latin(Spanish, portuguese, french, Italian, romanian, catalan, etc) aren't called "latinos" because they already had denominations of what their people were called before. So the original concept of the word is "any individual BORN in any country in the american continent that speaks a language that came from latin is latino." But the USA only considers the spanish speaking(aka hispanics) countries latino. So even though Brazilians(lusophones) and Haitians(francophones) speak portuguese and french respectively and are very much in the american continent, the United States Law doesn't consider us latinos, when we clearly are and all of the other latino countries consider us latinos too. So forgive us for not wanting to conform to what americans think we are. Sometimes, the rules and standards the US set for themselves aren't a thing in the whole entire world, can y'all believe that???(y'all use fahrenheit, feet, miles, pounds instead of the much easier celcius, centimeters, meters, kilometers, kilograms, etc that basically the whole entire world uses)(and address football incorrectly as s*ccer, which is where I draw the line). Shocking for the center of the world, USA, the only America that exists because the name isn't United States of (the continent) America(some basic geography and history lessons would really do some americans good). In Brazil, we have memes that joke that being considered latino in the US is the easiest thing in the world:Have at least one of your great grandparents born in a hispanic latin america country(bonus points if it's Cuba, Mexico or even their own territory Puerto Rico because they are pretty much the only ones the average american knows because they are the ones closer to the US), speak three words of basic spanish and call it a day. Congrats, you're latino now. Some americans really think they know better what being a latino is than latino people themselves. You don't. Thank u, next.
And before anyone says I'm a disguised hater, I love all the woman mentioned, just some of them don't represent latin america as much as they try to force it upon people, and actual latinos(not just from Brazil and Argentina but also from Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Peru, Uruguay, Nicaragua, Haiti, etc) have the right to not feel represented by them. The latino's point that Katseye does not have latin america representation is valid because it is considered true by latino people and what latinos consider latino and not what USA citizens consider latino. Because I can assure you they are different. Daniela is considered latina only in the US. She wouldn't be considered latina anywhere else. For us, she's only American.
See this to understand:
instagram
To sum it up:You don't know the language to a higher level, you've never been on the country and you don't know more than the basics of their culture, you can't claim it, it doesn't matter how many relatives you have from there, which is the only thing Daniela showed to have so far. I mean, you CAN claim it, but don't expect the people from the country to feel "represented" by you.
That being said, there is nothing wrong with being "just" American or only having one nacionality. I recognize Daniela's talent and I think after the group ends she will be able to establish herself in the industry as the next big soloist. I can see her pulling off something similar to what Selena Gomez or Camila Cabello do in terms of music.
4. Yoonchae:
Of course, they needed a korean but Yoonchae and Sophia are two that I think could be more successful in a kpop group(I would love Sophia to join Gehlee Dangca and Elisia as the filipinas of kpop). I do think the group needed east asians, I'm just surprised any korean girl would apply to this reality show instead of just applying to be a hybe or any other agency trainee and be probably more successful in a kpop group. Like Nayoung for example. According to the judges she wanted to be eliminated to be a soloist, which is probably true, now that she is participating in Girls on Fire. If she got in, she will probably be a soloist in Korea after it ends. Theories say that Hybe always wanted Yoonchae because she is younger and fits more the korean beauty standards than Nayoung, but Nayoung was more popular among the public, so they invented this whole soloist thing to kick Nayoung out. Others said that they always wanted Nayoung on the group to debut Yoonchae on either a kpop group with Hinari, Ua, Karlee, Mei and Marquise or another kpop gg who would have like New Jeans vibes, but Nayoung wanting to be a soloist frustrated their plans and they had to go for Yoonchae. I never believed any of those, because they just don't make sense to me. I did have Nayoung as a favorite and barely noticed Yoonchae before mission 3, but I like her. She's nice and her entrance was predictable. Her place was basically guaranteed but she deserved anyway.
5. Megan:
My fave since the show started. She was my pick since the very beginning. She's an icon, she's a legend and she's the moment. Her dance will slay on the group(and I imagine her raps too since I think Manon and her will be the rappers, it's a position that fits them the most comparing to the other members, maybe Daniela will rap too). She has everything and I love her with all my heart.
6. Manon:
She is a visual and a decent dancer. I think her husky voice is very unique, just kinda unstable and a little bit shaky most of the time. But she has the time to train it and she has improved a lot in comparison to the start of the show, same thing with her lack of facial expressions in performances, which is understandable because she was a model and has a very mature look, which is probably why she always had more of a serious face and overall vibe. Speaking of her model career, I hope it's still a thing after her debut. She passes me some Naomi Campbell, Winnie Harlow and Anok Yai vibes and I think it would be a very profitable industry for her to keep being successfull in the US after the group ends. Usually reality show groups have a temporary contract of 2-5 years, which is a good amount of time to Manon to guarantee her future after the group is over. I can't picture her as a soloist(at least for now), but I think she would slay as model(both photos and runway) and I can definitely see her potential as an actress with proper training as well.
My biggest fear towards Manon on the group was the same as Yoonchae:Her being kinda isolated/left aside by the other girls. Yoonchae because of the language barrier and Manon because she seems to be more of an introvert and reserved kind of person. Compared to Manon, Samara seemed closer to Yoonchae, Megan and specially Sophia and Lara during the show. The only girls I can think of that Manon was very close with are Nayoung and Iliya(who revealed on Tik Tok she was the only one that voted she wanted Manon on the group with her). And because of Manon's personality seemingly being a little bit more closed, which is understandable since Manon was the second oldest girl in the show(Nayoung being the oldest and Iliya the third oldest). However, the most toxic part of her fandom kept inventing she was hated by some of the other girls because of this, trying to build a victim narrative to favor Manon. As someone who is part of both Manon's fandom and Samara's fandom, I can say both are the ones with the most toxic fans(at least the louder ones), but I think Manon fans are still a little bit worse than Samara's because Manon fans are usually solo stans. Most of them like Manon and Manon only.
(This is actually a lighter one, I say way worse ones, that are so heavy I don't even know if can mention)
Meanwhile, Samara's fans usually also liked Sophia, Lara, Emily, Lexie, Ezrela, Nayoung, Iliya, Mei, Karlee, Celeste, Megan and Yoonchae(mainly, but I saw a few supporting the other girls as well). If you go to Instagram, my point will be proven. All the girls who commented on Samara's post saying goodbye to Dream Academy were treated nicely by her fans. Meanwhile Adéla, who said she congratulated all the Katseye members in private and not everything needs to be on the internet to be true and to have happened, when she went to congratulate Manon on her Katseye post on Manon's instagram, most comment replies were hateful(and Samara fans are the most toxic ones? Alright, I'll pretend I believe you). Some Manon fans need to decide themselves. You call her out for not congratulating Manon online, and when she changes her mind about it and does it people don't like either? What do you want from the girl man? Adéla hates Manon because she didn't post a photo with her? She didn't post a photo with Yoonchae either! And that could have a number of reasons:maybe they aren't that close, maybe Manon and Yoonchae didn't want to for some reason and that's fine! There were even people saying they would, quote unquote, "k*ll Mei's short ass" because she didn't congratulate Manon right away and only said "congratulations" in japanese with a fire and heart emoji. They don't need to congratulate her right the second she posts! And if they just want to like the post and not comment anything, that's fine too. It doesn't mean they hate her!
("I don't mean any harm to Celeste" gurl who said Celeste hates Manon when they are clearly friends and told Celeste to stay mad)(Toxic Manon stans keep Samara's name out of their mouths challenge lmao)(Some of them have this victimising paranoia that all of the other girls hated Manon that just doesn't make sense! They have no evidence to back it up! Manon is beautiful and talented, she doesn't need victimhood!)(This inexcusable mentality is not healthy and I'm sure Manon and any other girl wouldn't like her fans attacking their fellow contestants and friends using her name)(Y'all don't see Samara or any of the other girls fans for that matter doing this as much as they do)(If everyone thought like that, we would be doomed)(For example, Daniela and Lara started to follow Samara on Instagram a while after the show was over, just because something isn't done imediately it doesn't mean it's fake, it doesn't mean they hate Samara, some ppl should stop making assumptions based on no proof)(They act like Manon is the most hated girl from the show, which is just not true)(And it's ironic since a good part of the other girls haters were Manon fans) ("Why did you comment on * insert random contestant name * and is commenting on Manon just now?" Maybe because the other contestant post was reccomended first? Y'all don't know how Instagram works? There are a countless of possible reasons, this doesn't prove they hate Manon)
My other problem is that some Manon fans, specially the ones on twitter(I refuse to call it X) couldn't just celebrate Manon's debut without mentioning about how Samara was "a loser who would never be successful because she got rejected by Now United and Dream Academy". Have y'all never heard about black solidarity? The fact that people constantly confused both girls for the other(even in official midias) shouldn't separate the fans more. It should unite both fanbases to fight back together to stop this kind of thing from happening. You don't need to put Samara down to praise Manon and vice-versa. But something I hate about both fandoms are the rivalizing of both girls. The two fandoms that should be united the most against racism(because I've seen racist comments attacking both girls, Samara just a little bit more because she is a black latina and Manon is a black european) are the ones fighting the most! It wasn't supposed to be like that! I mean, look at these photos:
If they hated each other so much they wouldn't even be able to stand the other being close too them. Samara wouldn't look happy for her along with the other girls. In the video below Manon is jokingly doing the choreography of Break Free for Samara and Sami is laughing:
https://youtube.com/shorts/mUi5_Yu4mUg?si=GDHzqKWPgQuX4bVo
And people swear on their graves they hate each other solely based on the fact they don't follow each other on Instagram lmao. People just because you don't follow every single person you know that doesn't mean you hate them, sometimes you're just not that close/intimate to them or their content enough to follow them and that is totally fine. You don't need to follow anyone if you don't want to.
Another accusation is that Samara hates her because of the video Manon walks in Marquise and Samara's direction and Marquise passes through her to go hug Sophia and Samara passes through her to go hug Yoonchae. First of all:It's most likely she was going for Marquise, which Manon seemed to be a little bit "closer" with in comparison to Samara. Second:Manon didn't seem to be that close to any of the eliminated contestants. Third:She hugged Emily and Ezrela duo and then Samara and Marquise duo before going to hug the other Katseye members. Fourth:Even if she was close to Samara and Marquise, Sophia and Marquise were one of the closest friend duos of the show and Samara seemed quite close with all the asian members, but specially Nayoung, Ua and Mei. So Samara is undoubtedly closer to Yoonchae than she is to Manon. Fifth:If they didn't want to hug Manon again, they are in their right. They don't need to hug Manon or any other contestant if they don't want to. Maybe they aren't that close to a certain girl or maybe they feel uncomfortable with hugs/have a sensibility to physical contact and y'all should respect their choices whatever its based on.
Sixth:People got an specific take of the live finale out of context to make Samara look like "the villain" once again(are we even surprised at this point?). Samara goes for Yoonchae first but SAMARA AND MANON HUG RIGHT AFTER THE YOONCHAE AND SAMARA HUG. Then Samara is hugged by Lara, Sophia and next by Daniela. Then the host dismisses the eliminated girls. Megan is the only one who didn't got to hug not just Samara but also Ezrela and Marquise as well because she spent a lot of time conforting Emily.
After Marquise and Sophia's very long hug, Sophia and Samara hug while Marquise and Manon hug. Then Marquise and Daniela hug and the host asks the eliminated contestants to leave.
Emily is hugged first by Lara, then Megan while Manon is conforting her(couldn't see if they hugged but probably did) and hugged last by Yoonchae. I was surprised because Megan didn't left Emily's side, even when they weren't hugging. I didn't knew they were that close but they are two very good dancers so it makes sense. I found that very cute.
Ezrela is hugged first by Daniela and then by Lara. She talks a little with Yoonchae and Sophia while holding hands before the time the host gave them to say goodbye was over.
I think the girls clearly needed more time to say goodbye. Maybe they could have done it after the show to release later. I didn't got to see the ENFP girls Emily and Sophia hug(and as a fellow ENFP I didn't like it), my antifragile girls Samara and Megan hug, my dancing duo Emily and Daniela hug, etc. And I wanted to hear what they talked to each other too! Anyway, you can't have anything you want in life, am I right? That's all on Manon, let's move on.
7. Samara:
The girl had it ALL:The visuals, the dance, the public and SPECIALLY THE VOCALS(she always passed me some Beyoncé, Rihanna and Tyla vibes)(remember that it's my personal opinion, I'm not comparing). Even Sophia said Sami had one of the best voices she's ever heard:
(And the fact that this interview happened AFTER the controversy, speaks volumes, we all need a true friend like Sophia in our lives)(I think Sami and Soph's friendship are one of the cutest of the show, when Samara couldn't dance Break Free because of her knee injury Sophia's parents commented on one post about it wishing her to get well soon and calling her "Sam", it was so wholesome)(I like that popular saying that goes:"If there are 10 people at a table, a na*ist arrives, sits and no person gets up and leaves, there are 11 na*ists at the table." You can't tolerate the untolerable. It applies to any kind of prejudice in today's society. People are known for the company they keep. If Samara really was such a terrible person, then all of the other girls would be too for still being friends with her, therefore indirectly supporting her actions)
I feel like Hybe was sorta kinda testing if they would push her to debut. They knew she was going to be popular because she is brazilian, arguably the most engaged public of all time(there isn't compilations of brazilian crowds in shows for nothing)(also Brazil is on the top 10 countries that consume k-pop music and the overall market of the genre the most along with South Korea, Philippines, Thailand, Japan, China, Indonesia, USA, Malaysia and I don't remember the last one but it is either Mexico, India or Canada at least it was like that last time I checked) but she also had the talent and the experience, since she trained with Now United. I particularly think they thought on pushing her to debut after she carried antifragile team b on her back(will come back to that later) since a short while later they allowed her to dance Back For More with Kai and shortly after some desperate toxic stans thought it was unfair to the other girls and tried to bring her down using her Tik Tok likes. (People have to understand reality shows are unfair, yes, some more than others but there will always be unfairness to it, even if little, and on one like this, it wouldn't be different. People vote for nationality. Samara, Celeste and Sophia had the skills, but take Universe Ticket as an example:Vanesya wasn't ready to debut but still ranked high before being eliminated by the judges because of the indonesian public votes. So of course the girls from smaller nations, nations that don't consume hybe content that much and girls that have too "common" and "uninteresting" nacionalities/ethnicities/backgrounds according to the public will come behind. To keep people invested, they need a story.)
Anyway, the videos Samara liked were taken out of context by people who don't even speak portuguese. Because not just brazilians but native and portuguese speakers overall(People from Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, etc) know there is nothing wrong about the videos. I watched the videos and there is nothing special about them at all, really.
Also, just because she liked something, that doesn't mean she agrees with EVERYTHING that is being said. Not everything in life it's so black and white, people. Sometimes she only partially agrees, agreeing only with specific parts. And Brazil is known for having a very dark and acid sense of humor. With anyone and anything. Including Brazil and brazilians themselves. "Oh so I'm allowed to mock/tease/make fun of Brazil and brazilians then?" Yeah, you can if you want to but Brazil will fight back HARDER. Like this:
(The brazilian humor can be heavy sometimes. We are the type of society that overall believes looking at our problems positively with jokes or in other ways of comedy make them less painful to bear. The famous "laugh not to cry". As the people were saying from the indian videos:"You shouldn't disrespect this country's culture if you don't know it, don't understand a thing about it and never been there" but I guess it only applies to certain specific cultures out there and not actually all cultures like some tend to preach)(Of course there are always exceptions to the rule, but overall brazilians are considered the cleanest people in the world. The average adult brazilian takes 2/3 showers a day and approximately 14 showers per week, habit inherited by our indigenous people. This kind of joke is nothing personal to India. We joke about it with other places too, especially european people, mostly french people, that they invent the best perfumes so they don't need to take showers. Just because we joke about it, it doesn't mean we actually believe it's true)
Besides, the indian video that shows a guy seeing indian food could be doing a social commentary on hygienic and sanitary questions of street food(which I interpretated that way because Brazil and India share a little bit of similarities in that sense) and how some foreigners feel about different foods, judging them by their appearence. It's not enough to assume she hates India or thinks of India as a gross country. I follow a brazilian woman on Instagram who is married to an Indian guy. She says that those street foods are like 1% of India, and some indians themselves like to joke about it(I myself I've seen a few people not only from India but also from Bangladesh do much "worse" jokes)(don't worry, in Brazil there is also many gross looking food and we also make fun of them, like Cuscus Paulista). So just because Samara liked this video about it, it doesn't mean she doesn't acknowledge the good parts of Indian food.
Samara:* Likes a video about a guy not liking SOME, not all, indian street food, who could be very well doing a social critic, another with a guy who looks like he's indian, at the very least south asian, "mocking" indians(that people don't even know the context, mayne he was exaggerating to entertain the people around) and something that isn't a indian recipe and everyone can tell, and that's the fun about it *
"OH MY GOD she despises all of indian culture, you anti-indian, xenophobic and racist!"
Samara:* Likes explanatory content with historical information about the context of the Israel and Palestine conflict that is not taking any sides *
"Wanting to be informed about geopolitics and a relevant topic about what's going on in today's world is being a pro-war, islamophobic sionist/zionist! You should be the one getting bombed and dying, not palestinian children!" (Samara follows Kehlani on Instagram, who is clearly an active pro-palestine celebrity, if some of y'all have bothered looking further instead of just believing doubtful sources you would know)(Karlee posted many stories in favor of Palestine yet she commented and liked Samara stuff after she left the show and is still following Samara. If Samara really was pro-Israel, Karlee probably wouldn't do that)(The US wants to ban Tik Tok from the country once again because according to them the app is making young people anti-Israel, so if some of y'all will invent lies at least be cohesive and coherent about it)
Samara:* Likes harmless stuff on Tik Tok about the bible and an Instagram post listing based on real numbers and facts, countries that are dangerous from christians to visit(yes, there are places out there where christianism is prohibited and/or christians are a minority/oppressed like Somalia, Yemen, Pakistan, Russia, Sudan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, China, Afghanistan, Nigeria and so on)(that's historical, every single religious group had/has some persecution)(but I guess some of you guys never heard of B*ko Haram, Al-Q*eda, Al-Sh*baab, Talib*n, Ham*s etc)(being aware that islamic and other religions extremist groups exist doesn't mean she believes every muslim or non-christian is a terrorist)(what's harmful is those groups ideologies that they are superior and christians and people with other beliefs are inferior, not the religion itself)(disagreeing with those groups, that is something most muslims and non-christians themselves do, doesn't show islamophobia or intolerance, it shows common sense)(the post never disrespects any of those countries, it only says that if you are a christian you should think twice about going there and be extra careful if you do)(all the facts of the post were right, since when stating facts is religious intolerance? As a roman catholic who likes history, I don't call school "christianphobic" "anti-christianism" when they teach about everything it has done in the past)(every religion is valid, being fanatic about it isn't, and that was what the post was doing:Warning and pointing out countries you have high risk you might encounter those groups who will harm christians and anyone they want to if they feel like it)(the problems are with people from those groups specifically and not the whole entire country but the groups are still in those countries which might affect a possible trip so she's right in worrying about that and thinking about it ahead) because she is just a regular christian from a regular church like the majority of the brazilian population (most of the brazilian population is roman catholic but there are also an expressive number of protestants and Samara is from a protestant church and while similar, the persecution that catholics suffer and the one protestants go through have their differences) *
"Look at her, she is a conservative, extremist, conspirationist, intolerant, anti-chinese, anti-russian, religious fanatic Bolsonaro supporter! Shame on you, monkey bitch! Come back to the favela where you belong!"
(Yeah most people were being hypocrites just projecting their own prejudices on her and using it as an excuse to perpetuate them without not even looking for further information to confirm if the allegations were real. According to some of these people twisted logic, it's only wrong when Samara "does" it, but they can go do the "same", or "worst", to her)(And she didn't even do anything, which just makes these people look even more stupid than they were before, if that's even possible)
People, make it make sense! Some things are just thrown in the accusations out of nowhere. Stop hating on a black latina girl for no reason(and somehow the racist xenophobic is her)(and before anyone says I'm "pulling the race card", if the accusations were proven to be true, then people would be right for calling her out on her mistakes regardless of her skin color, but as her fans and members of her family already explained the situation I don't see any other reason to hate on her besides prejudice. Her mom is right:She did nothing wrong. She does not have an issue. She is not problematic. Accept and get over it.)(It's okay if you don't like someone but at least be respectful about it, just ignore their content and leave them alone, it's more simple than it looks like). Just because Samara was complimented directly and individually about her dance, charisma and stage presence by Kim Chaewon of Le Sserafim herself, danced with Huening Kai of TXT(by the time the only girl that met another member of hybe that wasn't le sserafim) and was the third most voted as "girl you want the most in the group with you" with 9 votes by the other contestants(lost to Sophia with 14 votes and Daniela with 12 votes), it doesn't mean her popularity was a threat to your fave. I mean, it kinda did, but spreading rumors and fake news based on invented lies about her is a real low blow, people should have focused more on their faves instead. People didn't even searched for the traduction of the videos and made assumptions based on nothing. So It's sad Samara didn't get to debut because people couldn't understand portuguese and imagined things.
Hybe clearly did with her the same thing they did to Garam:Tried to poorly clean her image as much as they could until they could kick her out. Because even if the girls are not wrong, they can't have a member who had any kind of polemics before, even after their reputation is cleaned. That's shown in Hybe releases after that:They posted a video that Samara and Lara were hugging and Lara seemingly whispered "I love you" to her:
https://youtube.com/shorts/b9xl67OR_OA?si=qPzW21RZSpFZnloY
And they partnered Samara with Ezrela in mission 3(they carried team wannabe together) which seemed to make them become closer because before that they didn't have much interactions and after it they even spent thanksgiving together after the show was over:
https://www.instagram.com/reel/C0Chj-tOydx/?igsh=MXFtZzYwdGpvNDVvdQ==
Samara also said that about Ezrela in the same interview Sophia said the phrase above about Samara:
(And they were also seemed very close at the live chat before the finale but people swear Samara has something agaisnt indians and Ezrela dislikes her, unbeliavable)
https://youtu.be/YSDZfOD4JnY?si=l81La_tg40keuNPD
So any of the girls showed any dislike for one another. Maybe some girls weren't that intimate, because there were 20 girls people, of course you're going to be closer to some of them more than the others, but all of them never showed anything but respect and admiration for one another.
Samara had good votes. (Even if the whole world against us we still gave Sami good numbers, that's how powerful we are hahaha)
As you saw, she surpassed both Megan and Ezrela in number of votes, and Manon won her in early voting, but Samara had more live voting. She didn't got in because of the judges that gave Manon a higher score as you can see:
I fully believe they had the lineup ready before the finale. Most reality shows usually do. I watch them already having that in my mindset. Or do you think it was a coincidence to have three girls from each team(Girls Don't Like Girls and Dirty Water) debut and Samara and Manon being on the same one? Hybe wanted to fool the brazilian audience until the very last second, because they know the engagement we have and how dedicated we are as a public(the meme "Brazil Mentioned" is real ppl)(Brazil has the best memes lolol)(Look at Vincent Martella:He was with 385 thousand followers on Instagram, a photo of him with a shirt with "I'm famous in Brasil" viralized an brazilians made him have currently 5,6 million followers, surpassing Tyler James Williams, who is not very fondly of Brazil and Brazil is not very fond of him either because Everybody Hates Chris is a classic in Brazil. In Brazil, everyone watched it. And the minority that didn't, they at least know about it's cultural impact on Brazil. So Tyler is considered ungrateful in Brazil for not liking that we love the series so much according to brazilians. And Vincent actually showed love for Brazil and what happened, happened. That's the power of Brazil). They wanted to fool their whole audience actually, going all like "Which black one we'll pick, 'cause y'all know she's here just so people don't accuse us as racists, because even if they were untalented we would get one of them because of their skin color, but two is already too much". Sadly that is how the world works people. We gotta get used to deal with it for now and fight so it can change in the future. Although it didn't work that much, since most latinos were accusing Hybe of xenophobia against them ever since Celeste's elimination, what only grew even stronger after Samara's elimination(proving once again my point about latinos non-acceptance of Daniela as a latina. For most latinos, Daniela represents the US and the US only).
(People try to force Gisele Bündchen, the one and only ubermodel, one category above super model, which as a category created for her, the woman who was the highest paid model for 15 years, as a german or a french woman; people try to force that Pelé isn't the football eternal king and pioneer that changed the sport forever and made it what it is today when he is the only player that has three world cups having the same amount or more world cups than some countries out there; people try to force Adriana Lima as old and ugly just because she is aging just like everyone else because she is a human being and still look gorgeus, just older; and I could go on all day. People really hate it when brazilians are the best/good on something. Sorry but we are the fifth biggest country in the world, we have a big population, great athletes and artists, and that is not changing)(Every country has something good and bad about themselves and we shouldn't debunk or belittle them but aknowledge their good and bad points in a respectful and honest way)
I mean, as someone who watched a lot of reality shows, I know there is always the insanely talent and popular girl that doesn't debut because "superior forces" don't want her there. Kaeun and Chowon from Produce 48, Chanelle from R U Next, Kawaguchi Yurina from Girls Planet, Bae Haram from Universe Ticket and now Samara from Dream Academy makes it to the list.
Brazil was the one that made the prettiest edits on Weverse and the posts about Samara were overall the ones with the most likes on Instagram during the show(Sophia's posts were the most liked overall on youtube). Dream Academy lost followers on Insta when they eliminated Celeste and lost even more when they eliminated Samara, that is the real latina power right there. We perpetuated the SoLaSa term invented by the filipinos, which makes an allusion to the word "star" (Sophia, Lara and Samara had THE CHEMESTRY, it's sad they didn't got to debut together) which was a voting strategy to help Samara because most brazilian fans voted for all the girls in team wannabe, which made Ezrela and Emily surpass Samara in mission 3 rankings, Ezrela staying in 4, Emily staying in 7 and Samara in 8. Ezrela and Emily were already quite popular so with the help of brazilians they surpassed Samara and as Ua's performance in Wannabe was not her best one, she got eliminated. So basically the strategy was:Sophia and Lara are going to end on top 2 anyway, so let's vote for them and Samara to try to get Samara in third. Voting for these three would stop lower ranking girls to surpass Samara. Some Manon fans tried to force SoLaMa (which is funny because it looks like the portuguese phrase "só lama" which means "just mud" and like, we know they meant Manon but it was poorly elaborated and executed because "Ma" can also stand for Marquise).
Of course, I don't hate Manon. I am happy for her and all the girls because they all deserve it. However, in terms of talent Samara was one of the most talented ones, definitely an all-rounder. She gave a better performance than Manon in all performances(specially Dirty Water). Manon is great, Samara is just better. And all of the girls are talented, some girls are just more talented than others, like Sophia and Lara, which is normal. As someone who is in both fandoms, I can say Samara is a better dancer and BY FAR a better vocalist than Manon. So I believe she would have been chosen instead of Manon if it weren't for the controversy because she is a better performer than Manon and did better on the performances that were being judged. Of course I wanted her to debut and I would switch Manon for Samara if I could. Or also keep Manon and switch Daniela for Samara because we would actually have proper unarguable latin america representation and the US would still have Lara and Megan to represent them(but of course they needed a contestant who was just american and half of the group representing the US, half of them representing Asia and one of them representing Europe, how global is that again? Lolol I'm just kidding, take it as a joke people). Anyway, I believe everything happens for a reason. If the girls who are there debuted, that it's because that how it's supposed to be. I am not bitter/salty about it because the other girlies are doing good and the lineup is solid, so I will keep following the other girls on their separate paths because hating on the group or on any girl won't change anything and I hope all the girls are successful on their journeys.
8. Ezrela:
Seeing her and the other contestants smile through the pain was so hurtful. I wish them all the best and a bright future! Hybe needed people of color politically. For the black girl, I do think they were leaning towards Samara at first, but then switched to Manon after the controversy. Before the live finale, Samara always ranked higher than Manon, so it was a no-brainer to figure it out. However, Lara was the indian girl from the start. And I think Ezrela was aware of that. Lara also always ranked higher than her and Ezrela was smiling so much at the finale after being eliminated. Like, I know she is the kind of person with a positive attitude, but Samara and Emily cried and while Marquise didn't cry, she seemed less happy than Ezrela. I admire Ezrela a lot. She is just a fortress, she was just so strong. She was conforting Emily with a smile on her face, Ezrela you're going places! Marquise also conforted Samara when Sami was giving her speech, but in a more discreet way than Ezrela but kudos for both of them for their strength. I would switch Daniela for Ezrela if I could. They are both aces, I just like Ezrela a little bit more. And Ezrela offers Australia/Oceania representation so if they switched Manon for Samara and Daniela for Ezrela, the group would be more global. But again, the lineup we have is not bad. Ezrela said she was the artist that she wanted to be. She seemed fulfilled for everything she learned and proud of Lara and the other girls. She is so mature, I love her and I know she'll make it big.
9. Emily:
Our Main Dancer! One of the girls with the best visuals! I feel like the show tried everything to make her stand out. Putting her with popular contestants on mission 2(Sophia, Lara and Yoonchae) so she could automatocally pass forward with her group without needing to rely on votes like Samara, Megan and other girls did, on mission 3 putting her with a not so popular member(Ua) and a member with a unfairly stained reputation(Samara) so Emily could be benefited once again. Of course, nothing of this is her fault, but she is an american girl that fits basically all of the US beauty stands after all. Because of that, they tried to push her until the last minute but her popularity didn't play in their favor. Don't get me wrong, I love Emily, but I'm not the only one saying this. A lot of people also concluded the same as me. The only thing Emily was kind of lacking was vocals. Her vocals aren't bad, they just could be better. I can see her being very successful as a choreographer, a dancer or even a member for another group. The sky is the limit for her!
10. Marquise:
I didn't know Marquise that much tbh. She didn't stand out to me. What I knew is that she was close with Sophia, Samara, etc. For me, she has always been "the thai girl with red hair". I do find her pretty but back then her skills were outshined by the other girls for me. I do think she was helped in mission 3 when the judges chose to keep her instead of Celeste, who ranked higher. Celeste ended up in 6 and her in 10. Nayoung ranked 3 but allegedly wanted to be a soloist so they had to keep Yoonchae, who ranked 12 because they needed a korean, Ua was 13/last place so she would be eliminated anyway. So the judges eliminated Celeste because according to them Marquise's performance was better, which I do not agree. Yes, I wanted Celeste to participate on the live chat with the girls and see her at the finale doing All The Same(she would look good in both Dirty Water and Girls Don't Like Girls) but at the same time, it was clear that both Celeste and Marquise weren't a want in this group. Both were being used to attract public from Argentina and Thailand, so at the end of the day, whoever they decided to keep for the finale, it wouldn't make a difference.

We don't talk enough about how Yuji Ohno clearly loved contemporary black american & caribbean culture and music and tried very hard to capture it when he composed for lupin iii. which played a big role in bringing black music and culture to japan, as did many of his peers in the burgeoning Citypop genre.
youtube
You can hear it in The Wiz (1978) clear as day this IS the lupin soundtrack this was exactly what Yuji Ohno intro and OST track is trying to envoke. and became legendary in its own right. it sounds almost interchangeable i love that. that's just one example off the top of my head because i was taking about living The Wiz but this style of music was already a decade old by 78.
youtube
You can hear it in Issac Hayes Shaft theme lol from 1971. this is part of the blaxploitation era which was a new type of very popular detective crime & action shows in the early 70s that starred black actors and artists for the first time (but also fell into exploitative and racially insensitive themes at times hence the name. this genre VERY clearly played a huge part of the look sound and theme later used in Part 2.
youtube
as much as you had James Bond and Noir oldies and Columbo all mixed in it, you can't forget this element of early 70s blaxploitation action detective movies & tv . tho we rarely mention it and many might not realize how many lupin tropes and motifs come from black art. the Motown chorus of ladies singing lupins name. the random man just smoothly exposition dumping about how cool and sexy shaft is in the middle of the song lol. it's all there.
the adult swim bumper / promo is well aware of this and doing a parody of that old school fuckalicious blaxploitation action schlock lol. they understood the assignment it seems:
youtube
stuff like this is THE nexus origin point from which you get the iconic Lupin III funk/disco/smooth jazz sound. which blended well with the older jazzier themes from noir and bond. a music style which has carried over into the Persona series, Cowboy Bebop, sonic games and more. that's why japanese games and series with a crime and mystery theme always sound like this.
THAT is why it is called AFRO LUPIN '68. IM NOT KIDDING .
everyone say thank you Mr. Hayes lol
although speaking of. the part 1 soundtrack has a lot of a late 60s british psychedelic rock mixed in which is also so awesome. the ending song always reminds me of like Procol Harum Whiter Shade of Pale or something. the Bee Gees had a very similar shift from british psychedelic folk rock to disco cause that was just what was big and happening
youtube
youtube
We didn't circle back to black caribbean music much but this is a great example of a blend of calypso and funk getting big on the japanese music scene and the reason a lot of citypop has steal drums and latin american instruments and such. one of my all time favorite albums All of Me (1979) features mostly afrolatino caribbean music mixed with funk and motown inspired vocals and instrumentation and it's an incredibly joyous experience of music tbh. the Samba tracks on the 78 lupin ost also reflect the importance of latino and afrolatino music in all this. most "nostalgic" video games from the 80s and 90s feature music that can be considered citypop because that was the fashion and pop of the time, so you'll have Chao Garden sounding like a track straight off of any calypso mix on youtube. an example if you don't know what it sounds like off the top of your head
youtube
youtube
it is extremely joyful and exciting to understand more about where our favorite stuff comes from . because of antiblackness in america and japan (in otaku and other reactionaries who dominate anime and video game scenes tbh), the importance and iconography of black culture on japanese pop culture is often erased. a lot of this stuff is just OLD as well and not something young fans would have or would be expected to have heard of with the best of intentions. you can have the most pro-black politics and appreciation and easily just never have encountered or watched an obscure and very dated tv show from 1971 to make that connection without being directed there. so it's a fun deep dive. know your lupistory lmafo. the impact people in the world have on each other is really beautiful 🏝🎆❤️
the wizard of oz (1939) is a lot like the castle of cagliostro where the movie is full of a certain sincere lightness and hope that is cherished deeply for a reason a very good reason. but the source material and other adaptations of the wizard of oz and lupin iii are all markedly different and at times the tone will venture into dark cynical experimental and surreal. which can REALLY put people off to it when they go in expecting more of the other thing. but if you go into it expected entirely anything possible it can be REALLY cool and interesting and weird, iconic and great stuff. i love you mystery of mamo i love you The Wiz i like how you are kind of scary and would have made me cry as a child now i think you're actually like genius. and i still love you cagliostro and judy garlands oz you are literally nestled deep where my tender heart and soul are ❤️

Hi :) can you do all the members(separately off) with a s/o who doesn’t really like their music?
[I can for sure give it a shot! This is my first ask so i do hope you enjoy it ^_^. Also I apologize for taking so long, my second vaccine shot kicked my butt]
Prompted: S/O who doesn’t like Gorillaz Music
Trigger Warnings: I can’t think of any for this one. Maybe I should state my horrible 2D accent! I apologize in advance. Of and I bring up the s*x, m*rder, party song. But all and all I don’t think there is anything else. Anyway enjoy!
~Murdoc Niccals ~
Let’s start this off with, at first he doesn’t even realize that you don’t like the Gorillaz music. He never even pieces two and two together. Why might you ask? Well for the first while you tolerated it for the Bass players sake.
After a few months, you decided it would be best to maybe leave Kong whenever the band you as practicing or rehearsing. You did a lot of stuff in this time. Coffee, read some good books, even went bowling on your own a few times. It was just nice to get away from that horrid music.
You didn’t have anything against the band members themselves! All of them were nice, it just you found the songs to be tedious and annoying.
When Murdoc finally started to take notice, he would ask you why you would avoid the band. Not seeming to understand the distaste of their masterpieces.
You lied most of the time, saying something stupid like “oh I am meeting up with friends” or “oh I would just be in the way”.
After a few more months, Murdoc finally forced you to sit and listen to their newest album. Mainly wanting to get your take on it before the official release.
You didn’t even get halfway through the first song before standing up and tuned off the player. You honestly felt like your ears would jump off your head if you ever heard that again.
“What the Bloody hell was that for?! We have like 43 more minutes to go”
“Murdoc, I don’t know how to tell you this. But babe…your music is a flaming hot dumpster fire and I don’t like it”
“……what? Why the hell are you with me then if you don’t like our music?”
“Because I may have underlining daddy issues according to the internet, but in reality I really love you Mudz…for you!”
“So playing bass isn’t sexy….underlining what? No wait getting away from the real point here. You never heard if Feel Good inc.? Or you know Clint Eastwood? Those were some of our best songs! What about To Binge? Empire ants? Any of them.
“Hmm, Feel Good inc? Let’s see it’s repeats itself a lot. Clint Eastwood? Haha other then the opening your song had nothing to do with Clint Eastwood. You posted To Binge aka forced 2D to sing it. Empire Ants? It just sucks”
“You suck! Are music is an art! It’s great! you are the problem here.”
“Never said I was! Your music is an art and it makes a lot of people happy. But to me, my ears did like it…but I can say this, I do like you a lot Murdoc.”
“ I am pretty great! Fine no more of our music…around your at least. But maybe sometimes”
“I can handle sometimes”.
~Noodle~
Noodle would completely understand your distaste for their music. She understands that not anyone is up for what they produce and she thinks that is okay!
For her as long as you don’t listen to any overly annoying songs around her. She really doesn’t care what you listen to.
She does however like to get your input on songs, even if you don’t like them. She just likes hearing different peoples ideas.
But with that being said, there is a 100% chance that she may try to convert you into liking Gorillaz. Of course, just simply by showing you different songs they have done. Like Punk or Humility, Feel Good inc. or El Mañana. Hell she has even shown you Latin Simone.
When she realized she was doing this, she quickly backed off and apologized.
“Sorry (Y/n). I didn’t mean to do that…I just kind of got excited and thought you would like the different genres we have done.”
“It’s okay Noodle, you realized your mistake! Honestly it’s not that the songs themselves aren’t inherently bad…it’s just well Murdoc’s bass playing is well…pretty bad in my opinion”
“Oh? How so if you don’t mind me asking?”
“Well to me it sounds like well, a crusty old man who doesn’t know how to cut his nails and proceeds to scratch the surface of everything he touches. Also while we are at it 2D’s singing is really hard to understand!”
“Well Murdoc does forget to clip his nails from time to time and he doesn’t seem to like using a pick for his bass. But now you confused me with 2D”
“Listen I love you all! Especially you Noodle, but ooo boy, if you guys weren’t careful in sex murder party…it kind of sounds like 2D is singing dissolve the kids…which isn’t a pleasant image”
“Ah, I see what you mean, anything else?”
“Nope! Your guitar playing is wonderful! Love everything about you! Just your band is a bit much at times haha”
~Russel Hobbs~
Much like Noodle Russel would understand that their music wasn’t for everyone. Everyone was entitled to their own opinion. For example he was really into rap and it took a while for him to talk the whole band into listening to it.
Regardless unlike Noodle or Murdoc he wouldn’t make you listen to a single song of theirs if you didn’t want to.
Of course you would every now and then for their demo’s you just wouldn’t voice your opinion on it, since you couldn’t stand it.
Russel would also try his best to get into music that you like! Of course, if he doesn’t like one of the songs you like, you make a mutual agreement to not play it around him.
He even at one point turned it into a game that he really enjoyed playing with you! It was a game that helped the both of you set up playlists!
He would pick one of his favourite songs, if you thought it was okay, it went into the playlist. If he liked one of the songs you picked into the playlist!
“Okay how about, this song?”
“Let it go…from frozen? Really, we ain’t putting that in the playlist”
“Yeah you are right it was a stupid idea, it’s just been stuck in my head.”
“Haha fair enough, how about Rainforest by Noname?”
“Hmm, that’s actually not a bad one! We can throw it in! Alright space jam?”
“What is with you in movie songs tonight? Yeah we can throw in space jam”
“Sweet!”
“I can’t believe space jam beats our music out in that mind of yours…”
~Stuart “2D” Pots~
At first, 2D can not wrap his mind around the fact that you hate their music. More so he has never really had someone be with him for well just him before. Most of the one nightstands he had in the past was because of his popular singer status.
He does try his very best to get you into their music, of course, walking the fine line between shoving it down your throat and giving you air to breath with your own tunes.
That being said though, he doesn’t overly mind the fact that you like your own selection of music. He does find some of your songs enjoyable.
When he realizes most of the bands travel playlist consisted of a few of the bands own songs. He secretly takes the phone and changes up the playlist. He removes the Gorillaz songs and replaces them with songs you like.
Although you don’t like the bands music, that never truly stopped you from liking 2D’s singing. When he found that out he made a special song just for you. One where it was only on his keyboard and singing. He keeps it hidden so Murdoc doesn’t find it.
“(Y/n) I made yew something!”
“Oh sweet Satan please don’t tell me it was breakfast and that you burnt down the kitchen again!”
“What no! Besides that was a one time fing and I got a four month ban from going in fere fanks to Russel”
“Sorry…shouldn’t have jumped to conclusions. What did you make 2D? You seemed really proud.”
“Oh well Um…I know yew don’t like our music and all…but I uh, I made yew a song, do ya want to ‘ere it?”
“Of course 2D, just because I don’t like your music, doesn’t mean I can’t be supportive of you”
“Well, this song isn’ really goin’ to be on an album, because I made it for yew”
“Aww 2D you didn’t have to~”
“But I wanted too!”
After he plays the song, you state that you adore it! This puts a huge smile on his face!

thanks @thesparrowseries for tagging meeee~~~! 💖💖💖
reasons why you like/dislike your name: I like my name. But growing up, people always pronounced it wrong. Both my first name and my last name. My last name is Latine, so if people pronounced that correctly, they usually assumed my first name also had a Latine pronunciation even though it isn't spelled like the Latine version at all. Sometimes, they'd cease to understand the English language and pronounce both names incorrectly even though there's literally no reason my first name should be difficult to pronounce and my last name is a pretty common Latine last name (but what did I expect from suburban white American women, honestly). My last name was usually replaced by a white/European lookalike. My first name is actually a quirky misspelling by my mom (who's a terrible speller) of my grandma's Irish middle name, so it gets mistaken for being Latine, Arabic, Russian – I don't even know how many ethnicities. I still love my names though, even if my first name is somewhat gendered (not super gendered in my view). The difficulty people have in pronouncing it or placing its origin makes me feel like it encompasses every part of me, and few can unlock its full potential. Also, seems I'd be safe from Rumpelstiltskin.
Star sign: Capricorn (sun), Gemini (moon), Scorpio (rising), lots of Aquarius, Sagittarius, and Scorpio for other stuff too~
Country you live in: America, sadly 🤢 (i feel u bro)
Favorite artist: Oh gee bruv idk... I respect Arakawa, Togashi, Haruko Ichikawa, Yamato Yamamoto (fuck what OnS became, but that's not the artist's fault), Makoto Yukimura, and Hayao Miyazaki. They have all created series that have impacted me in ways I can't even begin to explain. Surprisingly, I can't think of any authors I respect to the same degree, except maybe Agatha Christie and Steven King. I've only read one of Christie's books, but it left such an impact on me way back in middle school that I still want to mention her. I haven't read King's most iconic series/novels, but I can see his grand vision even in his lesser known works, so I'm sure his popular series are just as good if not better. I respect what George Lucas tried to do with Star Wars (even if he failed miserably in some places 😂); he made an iconic universe in so many ways that no one else has succeeded in doing before or since. I have great respect for the artists/directors Ron Clements and Jon Musker. I grew up on their films. I wouldn't have had a childhood without them, Stephen Hillenburg, and the teams who made Danny Phantom and Fairly Odd Parents. I have a growing respect for Vivienne Medrano and everyone at Spindlehorse, as well as everyone at MDHR. Indie creators are really pushing the envelope in this day and age. As for musical artists, I would be remiss if I didn't mention Lil Nas X; and I still love playing Mozart, Debussy, Liszt, Beethoven, and Rachmaninoff after years and years and years. Current Coldplay may be cringe at times, but their older albums (and even some of their new songs) are still such a nostalgia fest summer childhood daydream for me that I can't seem to escape them. Wow, I mentioned a lot more artists than I expected!
Mornings, afternoons or evenings: Mornings. Everyone's quiet then.
Siblings: A sister and a brother, both older. I'm baby.
Sexuality: UHHHHHH bi/pansexual??? Queer??? Idk something 🤷
Favorite special item: I have legit purged all of my personal belongings (aside from necessities) since I left for an out-of-state college 4 years ago, and anything that I brought with me, I have done my darnedest to gift to friends or donated them to the community. Only small trinkets remain. Some of which never see the light of day, and I plan to gift them to someone else eventually, but the few I don't currently plan to give away are: 1) a mushroom lamp that you can tap to change its colors and brightness that I got from my aunt for Christmas my sophomore year, 2) a small glass figurine of a ram with huge curled horns and a six-legged spider that my mom got me on whim as we walked around Arbor Lakes while the rest of the family was seeing This Is It!, and 3) my stuffed fish – a trout, to be exact. It's the only stuffed animal I brought with me from Minnesota, and the only one that remains.
Five random facts:
I sleep with four pillows: 2 for my head, 2 for the rest of my body.
I've been playing piano since I was 5 years old, which means I've been playing for 18 years now.
I've dated six people in the last 2 years, and I've only dated seven people total in my life.
I studied Buddhism, Shintoism, Daoism, Confucianism, and Islam in undergrad, and now have a B.A. in Religion that I do not regret but is very difficult to explain to employers and acquaintances alike that it is not "theology studies."
I have never wanted to get married or have kids (though I once assumed it would happen given that's what everyone told me). I highly doubt that's going to change. I realized it in kindergarten when this kid named Mark kept saying he wanted to marry me when we grew up and all the adults kept saying how cute that was when I was just very annoyed and confused. The gay realizations start young, y'all.
I tag: @tiburme @mirycactusito @mattbear-music-nz @jackshade21 @stupidbluejay @lizard-dumbass @esu-esu if you want!!!!

Nightwish’s Floor Jansen: “The way that things are now aren’t the way things are for life”
The gospel according to Nightwish singer Floor Jansen
It’s been eight years since Floor Jansen joined Nightwish, and in that time her already considerable star has only risen further. In 2020, she remains one of the most recognisable women in metal: a supreme talent and fascinating personality who has helped Nightwish into their most successful years ever. An unlikely career path for someone who originally just wanted to be a biologist and hang out with a ton of animals…
I never stood still as a child
“My dad was an ambitious man, so if there was a business opportunity, a better job to get, he would move. Let’s not forget that in those days there were no cellphones; it’s not like you could stay in touch through that, so if you moved you basically would never see [your friends] again. I don’t know what it would be like to grow up in one place and make friends there that you keep for life. I’m married to a man who has had that. Today he had one of his best friends over that he knows from primary school – now we have kids, they have kids of the same age and that kind of stuff. I think that’s romantic to me. But maybe because I moved too much, it was easy for me to emigrate [away from the Netherlands later in life]. I still miss people, but it’s easy for me to adapt to places, and put a value on actual friends that last.”
The only constant is change
“Life is flexible. I wouldn’t want to teach my daughter that the way that things are at the moment are the way things are for life, because it’s not. Life will change constantly, and I think it’s very healthy that it does. Sometimes people need to get out of their comfort zones to keep their energy going, to not fall asleep on the spot. Safety is a very strong thing in our human nature, but from where I’m standing I think it’s a good thing to get out of that comfort zone.”
I wanted to be a biologist
“It was my love for nature. That’s not something that came when I joined Nightwish, I’ve had it since I was a kid. I feel very strongly connected to it, and to the wellbeing of everything around me that lives and breathes, including plants and trees and, of course, animals. I didn’t really understand what a biologist does; I just wanted to work with nature, be a part of it and understand it better.”
The Gathering changed music
“They were life-changing. They came on the radio with Strange Machines from their album Mandylion. They really kickstarted quite a bit [of a movement] in the Netherlands and around there after. [After Forever] happened to start around the same time as Within Temptation. Nightwish were before us but still beginning to reach internationally around the same time. But, for me, the thought that I could sing in a metal band had never occurred to me before The Gathering.”
It wasn’t hard to become a vegetarian
“It was very easy for me to give up eating meat – a longer thought about what’s happening to the animals that need to be mass-produced to feed this human race. It’s not fair to them. I am not against eating other animals, but I don’t like the way we keep them, or the things we have to artificially make in order for them to not have mass disease outbreaks.”
Although hunting is actually cool
“Since I moved to Sweden and I basically live in the woods, I’ve learned a lot about hunting, which is still a very difficult subject for a lot of people, and especially people who are not close to nature. The closer you get to nature, the more part of it you become, and in nature, other animals hunt. In Sweden, as an example, they hunt to preserve the species. It all has to be done with a quick death, no suffering, it’s very important that they don’t suffer. The people that do it have a great love and respect for nature and the animals. And I gladly have a part of that – it turns out I am quite a good shooter! Though I would never actually go into the woods and hunt…”
Having a beetle named after me was unexpected
“That was weird! Ha ha ha! It’s special! That’s another connection back to nature, but yeah, fantastic, a real honour. There is now a tiny little bug [Tmesisternus floorjansenae], just a centimetre long, that has part of my name, just because the biologist loves my music so much. That’s exactly how it went! Ha!”
My daughter probably has metal in her DNA
“But we love music in its diversity, so she’s grown up with all kinds of stuff. Old McDonald Had A Farm is still way more popular than metal for her. You’ve gotta start with the classics!”
And if she wants to be a musician, we’ll be there
“We’re dreading that day because we know the struggles [Floor’s husband is Sabaton drummer Hannes van Dahl]. But if she has a talent for it she just needs to go and do it and believe in herself. Stay behind yourself, even when things are getting hard. It’s nice that mum and dad have some experience in it, but she needs to have her own back if she wants to really make it.”
Being famous is weird
“We moved to a very remote area in Sweden a year and a half ago and we didn’t really tell anybody anything about us. We think it must have been the previous owners who told people of the area who we were, because we thought that we had anonymously snuck in! The truck that helped us move emptied and left, and then this tractor came up to the property. A guy came out and was like, ‘Hey, I’m one of your neighbours – we heard that the Nightwish singer and the drummer from Sabaton just moved in, so I just thought I’d come and say hi and introduce myself!’ So, it was obvious that everybody knows, but maybe that gave us a good start because they’re all very cool people and we get along just fine.”
I was on a Dutch show called Best Voices
“It’s a show about the best singers of the Netherlands, people that have already had a career. People are put together on an island, and we go and play each other’s music to each other. Every singer came with a list of favourite songs, and the others picked one of those that they’ll sing as much as possible in their own style – and we all had very different styles! There was an opera singer who I did Phantom Of The Opera with, there was a pop singer, a singer-songwriter, a partially Dutch and partially Latin American guy who does reggaeton, a rock guy who I actually did know… it was a super-wild mix of people, all coming with different styles of music. It was a challenge for me, but I thought it was a huge opportunity for me to join and give the Dutch people an insight into my world without scaring them away. And that really worked! The way that the Netherlands is perceiving me has changed, and doors have definitely been opened.”
Certain interview questions can annoy me
“What I’m sick and tired of in interviews is when I have to answer a question that has already been partially answered by the person doing the interview. A question that’s asked with, ‘You must be feeling…’ and then comes an assumption. ‘I can really imagine it was difficult to write this album…’ OK, so the question is…? Assuming emotions and assuming things... I’m sick and tired of [interviewers] steering [me] into the direction of the answer..”
I'm not sure why Nightwish connect with so many people
“There must be something in the atmosphere in the music that goes beyond complexity or the genre. There’s something that has been connecting people to the band, and still does. We’re still growing! I do think that the songwriting is really, really good, even when it’s complex. I think people are open-minded to it – just because the radio thinks they need to feed the audience three-minute songs, it doesn’t mean that everybody in the world can’t deal with more. Maybe people find it refreshing when it goes a little bit beyond that. People can naturally feel when it’s good music. But, everything still needs to work. The stars need to be aligned, and then there’s hard work and [us having] great love for what we do.”

New Girl (High School!Commodus x Reader)
Summary: You are a new student at Institutum Romanus Educational (which is supposed to be Latin for “Roman Educational Institute”) and come across some fascinating characters (I mean classmates). Sort of based off a ‘Gladiator’ AU listicle. Hope you enjoy it!
Warnings: A cheesy meet-cute scene
Word Count: 1,663
When you’d came to Rome to visit your father during your winter holiday, you had only hoped it would be a temporary break from your mundane life back in your hometown. Perhaps you’d get a chance to see the quaint streets covered in frost, or visit the Tiber River. And like most children, you would get a present - maybe new clothes, or a gadget. A brochure for a new school was certainly not what you were expecting as a gift.
Yet here you were, on your first day of the new semester in January, walking to your first period. All you were hoping for was nothing but a peaceful end to your 10th year. You were now to be a student at the Institutum Romanus Educational, or IRE as many playfully called it. It was perplexing to you why a school would insist upon retaining its Latin name, but your parents said it was reinstated by its current principal Marcus Aurelius. He was supposedly an admirer of the Classics and wanted his children to have a good understanding of ancient languages.
The first period of the day was Physics, which you never had a huge affinity towards, but were certainly not averse to. The teacher was kind, and he seemed to be quite enthusiastic about the content he was talking about. After being armed with two problem sets about electromagnetism, you had to walk across the entire building to your next class - English.
Throughout the hall, many of the sights weren’t very different from your old school - there were cliques of people talking to each other, and a few couples making out in front of the lockers. Campaign posters of a girl named Lucilla Aurelius were plastered across the wall. You were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of her on your way to class and by gods, the posters did not do her justice. She was gorgeous.
Flanked by two “minions” or girls wearing blouses and skirts similar to the pink-and-white combination she was wearing, she held a box of buttons that said, “Vote for Lucilla, Vote for Rome” on them. With a charismatic grin, she was passing them out to various people and telling them to vote for her for their Student Body President.
Another voice rose from the cacophony in the hallways. “I wouldn’t even know if a rat had chewed off the ends of her thin strands, that’s how ugly that girl’s haircut is.” A bald boy wearing an Assassin’s Creed shirt loomed over a girl with a pixie cut, who was crying.
He was answered by a larger boy, a seemingly more bulky one. “Quinn, I don’t think that’s how to get over being dumped. Just leave her alone.”
“Hagen, you piece of meat.” Quinn grumbled, leaving the tiny girl to pick up her books from the floor. Hagen gave her the rest of her things and sent her off to class.
When you entered your English class, you heaved a sigh of relief that you were on time. The board saying ‘Hamlet’ assured you that you had reached the correct classroom. The seats were almost all filled except for one placed in front of a green-eyed boy with cropped dark hair.
He was probably the perfect mix of gothic and preppy - his bangs were long enough to fall over his brow, and he wore a barely noticeable layer of eyeliner. His crisp, black button-down, paired with his skinny jeans and black designer boots, served as a stark contrast to the sweat pants and hoodies many of the other male students wore.
You waved politely only to find him idly writing something in a journal. It looked like something in elaborate cursive, and you would’ve looked further if the teacher didn’t begin taking attendance. And if it doing so wouldn’t make you look completely creepy.
Within moments, the teacher began lecturing about one of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies, calling upon various students to read scenes out loud for the rest of the class. A few kids named Gregory and Falcon read for the parts of Polonius, the chamberlain of Denmark, and Laertes, the son of Polonius.
You were nearly caught by surprise when the teacher invited you to read Ophelia’s lines in front of the class from Act 1, Scene 3 of the play. It wasn’t exactly on your agenda to attract much attention on your first day, but you decided to accept anyways. Standing in front of the class, you read Ophelia’s lines loud and clear while your green-eyed mystery, named Commodus, read Hamlet’s lines with passion. He seemed like he was born for this role.
“Thank you, both of you.” Your teacher applauded both of you after the scene was completed. When you returned to your seat, you saw a hand reach towards you from behind, holding a yellow sticky note. Quickly taking it, you tucked it under your knee before you could get caught.
“Commie’s passing notes in class again,” Gregory taunted, leading the entire class to laugh with him as the boy sitting behind you fumed with embarrassment. “Infatuated with the girl reading Ophelia, he seems to forget when the stage ends and when real life begins.”
The teacher’s eyebrows furrowed at Gregory’s remark. “Y/N, is this true? Did Commodus give you a note?”
“No, not at all,” you lied for him. “He didn’t give me a note at all, I just dropped my sticky notes and he gave them back to me.” Ignoring Gregory’s eye-rolling, the teacher reluctantly accepted your alibi and continued to lecture until the bell rung.
“Nice reading voice.” A boy in a burnt orange jacket offered you a kind smile as you both left the classroom. “You, uh, the new girl?”
“I am, thanks,” you nodded. “And you are?”
“The new boy,” he joked. “Sort of - I came here a few months ago from Australia. Actually Spain’s my homeland - I was born there.”
“So you’re a Spaniard?”
“No, I’m Max, but Spaniard works,” he winked, eliciting a laugh from you. “Want me to walk you to your next class?”
“If it’s not too much trouble for you,” you answered. “You wouldn’t by chance happen to know where World History is?
Max grinned. “That’s just where I’m headed. You looked confused when you entered - thought you could use a friendly face on your first day.”
“Thank you for making me feel a bit more welcome, Max.” You replied, letting him lead you through the crowd of students. Unbeknownst to the both of you, a pair of jealous peridot eyes followed the two of you until you turned the corner and disappeared.
Later that day, when lunchtime came around, your eyes widened at the color and variety of the flavorful dishes being served. It was almost like they were being prepared by gourmet chefs. You couldn’t help but smile at how pretty your tray looked; penne with a creamy tomato sauce, arugula salad with a balsamic vinaigrette, a piece of bread, and freshly cut fruit.
Deciding against the crowded cafeteria, you decided to take a chance to explore some of the other hallways in your new school. You wondered just how big your new school could possibly be. Did they have an indoor pool, a large gymnasium, a library,…or an auditorium? Holding your tray close to your chest, you walked into the large theater. In the center of the breathtakingly colossal stage, you found Commodus sitting cross-legged next to his shoulder bag and a thermos.
“Hello,” you quietly greeted him, approaching the edge of the stage and climbing up.
“Shouldn’t you be eating in the cafeteria?”, he asked, slightly perplexed, looking up from the book he was reading.”No,” you replied, placing your backpack down. “It wasn’t really my scene at my old school. I used to eat in the library or the music room.”
Commodus hummed in acknowledgment, returning to his copy of Dracula and his thermos of black coffee. “Where’s your lunch?” You asked, sitting next to him.
“I don’t usually eat any. I’m too busy.”
You pushed your tray towards him. “Would you like to share some of mine?”
“Yes, thank you.” He ripped off a piece of the bread and dipped it into the pasta sauce before chewing it. Commodus allowed himself a few more bites partially because he didn’t want to seem rude and…you seemed likable.
A few moments of silence took place while the two of you ate before you glanced at the clock. “Well…it’s time for me to go to my next class,” you commented.
“Oh…” His eyes looked slightly downcast when you told him you had to leave. “You look lovely!” You froze at his sudden compliment. “That…that was what I hoped to tell you in that note I gave you. That you look exquisite - your hair, your lips, your eyes- it reminded me of Lady Ophelia when you read her lines. You’re…you look more beguiling than she would be.”
“That’s quite sweet of you, Commodus.” You said with a small smile, flabbergasted. “Thank you, I…I’m quite flattered.”
“I was afraid you wouldn’t like it. Most people don’t understand my references or my vocabulary.” Commodus stammered, relieved that you didn’t find him disturbing for comparing you to a Shakespearean heroine. “Thank you for sharing your lunch and your time with me, Y/N.”
“Of course,” you extended your hand, expecting to shake his. “It was nice meeting you, Commodus.”
Accepting your gesture, he clasped your hand and softly kissed your knuckles, causing you to blush. Usually, princes from fairytales would do something so chivalrous. “It was nice meeting you too,” Commodus replied.
“I’ll see you later, then.” You carried your tray and backpack and began leaving the auditorium. Commodus watched you leave, hoping that perhaps you wouldn’t be like many of the other new kids, pretending to be nice before getting swept away by the popular students. That perhaps you would be…just as special as he already thought you were.

JINJER'S TATIANA SHMAYLUK: "I WILL GET REVENGE"
Go inside the Ukrainian metal group's new album 'Wallflowers'
Jinjer has teamed up with Revolver for a limited-edition bundle that includes the band's Summer cover story and a Wallflowers vinyl variant on 180g white wax. It's limited to only 300 copies — pick up yours now.
Tatiana Shmayluk wants revenge from beyond the grave.
As a woman fronting Ukraine's biggest metal band, she deals with endless bullshit. Comments. Snide remarks. Trolls. These dudes — and they are all dudes — might doubt her motivations. They might have something to say about her looks. Her clothes. Her uncompromising attitude. They might even attempt to throw shade on her high-flying vocal acrobatics or ferocious performances. But attempt is the key word here — in any and all cases.
Shmayluk is having none of it. If she can survive an upbringing in war-torn Ukraine, she can survive the haters. If she busted out of Eastern European obscurity to become an international star, the shit-talkers cannot touch her. If she can be held up as a role model by young women around the world, the power clowns cannot clown her.
Besides, there is post-mortem retribution to consider: "When I die, I will get their asses."
She says this with a laugh, perhaps because she understands that most of the people reading this won't believe it. But make no mistake: She means it.
Then again, undead reprisals won't be necessary. As it turns out, revenge is a dish best served with a heaping side of unmitigated success. Shmayluk fronts Jinjer, one of the premiere djent-prog bands on the planet. As of this writing, they have over 250 million cross-platform streams and views. They have nearly half a million monthly listeners on Spotify. Their 2017 live studio performance of "Pisces" — arguably their biggest song — has over 51 million views on YouTube.
Shmayluk and her bandmates — guitarist Roman Ibramkhalilov, bassist Eugene Abdukhanov and drummer Vladislav "Vladi" Ulasevich — somehow manage to combine metalcore, djent, prog, nu-metal and even R&B and reggae into a musical style all their own. Not bad for a group of young musicians from a conflict-ridden corner of the world that most Americans can't even point to on a map.
On the day Shmayluk and Abdukhanov speak with Revolver, Jinjer are in France recording their set for Hellfest's "Hellfest at Home" streaming event, which will replace the beloved annual metal festival — usually held in the sleepy French village of Clisson — with pre-recorded and contact-free sets from some of metal's heaviest and most popular bands. Such is life in what we hope are the waning days of the pandemic.
"Things with the pandemic are way worse in Ukraine than in the United States," Abdukhanov tells us. "Very few people have managed to get vaccinated. We are in line and waiting our turn. And because we haven't had the vaccine, we had to stay in quarantine here in France for seven days. We had to pay for this extra task just to be able to come here. It's a deep pain in the ass."
"In Ukraine, the shops will be open today but closed tomorrow," Shmayluk adds. "It's constantly on and off. But I didn't go sit in restaurants and things like this, anyway. I want to just be at home."
Both Shmayluk and Abdukhanov spent the early days of the COVID outbreak in Los Angeles. Jinjer were in Mexico when the remainder of their Latin American tour was cancelled, so Abdukhanov went to see his pregnant wife. Shmayluk went to visit her boyfriend, Alex Lopez of deathcore troupe Suicide Silence. She stayed for the remainder of her visa. "I was addicted to Amazon," she says. "Every day I ordered something. I got my first DSLR camera and some other photography equipment. Me and Alex got a huge fish tank — the Rolls-Royce of fish tanks. And then another tank. And another tank ..."
"Our American tour was supposed to start in April 2020, and it had not been cancelled yet," Abdukhanov explains. "We didn't know the situation fully, so we thought it might still happen — or part of it, maybe. So, it seemed reasonable to just stay in America. Of course, by the beginning of April the tour was cancelled, and it was clear that this thing would last very long."
The pandemic's enforced downtime did have a creative upside: Jinjer wrote and recorded their new album, Wallflowers. "For the first time in our whole career, we finally had time to write songs, practice them and go to the studio very well prepared," Abdukhanov says. This time around, drummer Ulasevich wrote the bulk of the material. Before he got started, the band collectively decided that they had to branch out from their last album, 2019's Macro.
"We knew for sure that we had to change the sound because we couldn't allow our album to sound the same," Abdukhanov offers. "All of us wanted some-thing new, and we had a very clear picture: We wanted the bass and guitars to be very aggressively distorted. Vlad, as always, had a very clear idea of how to change his drum sound and drum parts. As for the music, we never try to expect something from our new material. We just write music and let it flow. I think this will never change for us."
The result is somehow Jinjer's most aggressive and melancholy album to date. From the anguished, woozy groove of opener "Call Me a Symbol" and the dizzying, caustic metalcore of "Copycat" to the moody seesaw of "Vortex" and the airy, ominous dreamscape of the title track, Wallflowers is next-level Jinjer. "A lot of new elements are on this album," Abdukhanov confirms. "For people who are not familiar with our music, it can be complicated listening. But I think our fans are prepared for it. They got used to expecting what they don't expect."
At first, Shmayluk wanted to call the album As I Boil Ice, after Jinjer's new song of the same name. But the title didn't fit with the floral cover art they had already selected. They added an icicle to the image, but that didn't seem to help the situation. They ultimately decided on Wallflowers, which relates to both the artwork and Shmayluk's lyrics. "When I started writing lyrics, it was January 2021 and I was back in Kiev," she says. "Alex had come to visit, but it was time for him to fly back home to L.A. We had spent a lot of time together and now I had to learn to be alone. I didn't want to do anything socially oriented. I was just walking in circles in my apartment, making a huge hole in the floor."
Shmayluk's self-imposed isolation, underscored by the pandemic, set the stage for a more personal approach to her lyrics. At first, she started writing in Russian. Then she switched to English. "Vortex" was the first song she finished. "It's about a person who overthinks a lot," she explains. "Have you ever experienced that thing where you just cannot escape your thoughts? Your head becomes so heavy, like a ball of lead. It's about to explode. It can lead to depression, basically: You cannot stop, and you fall into it. That's the vortex."
As of this writing, "Vortex" is set to be the album's first single. The band has already filmed a video for the track. Shmayluk hopes the song can provide a kind of temporary support system for those who might need it. "Sometimes songs help me to overcome my emotional issues," she says. "Even with sad songs, they can make you feel you are not the only one who feels this way. It really eases your pain if you can find compassion to heal a sad heart."
Album closer "Mediator" is the result of an online personality test that Shmayluk took at the suggestion of a friend. "I'm always ready to do some psychology and self-analysis," she enthuses. "The result I got was 'mediator,' which has to do with compassionate, sensitive people. I feel this is basically another word for 'introvert' or 'wallflower' — it's all connected."
"But the song is about when I was younger," she adds. "I was an idealist. I wanted to see things as perfect and people as kind. But the reality is harsh. You grow up and you realize you still have a lot to learn — a lot of lessons that can't be taught in school. Life lessons."
The title track directly addresses the album's over-riding theme: Shmayluk's struggles as an introvert. "I've met a lot of people who have no idea what extraversion or introversion is," she says. "I explain it in this song so that hopefully people can relate. Introversion can be a problem for people who think that there's something wrong with them. If you are a wallflower in school, for example, people will mock you and bully you. When you grow up, you will realize you were just born this way."
"Society rejects people like her," Abdukhanov adds. "Society rejects people who stay inside. They think there's something wrong with these people because they are not part of a herd."
"That's true," Shmayluk says. "It's been hard for me to fit in with most people."
Which is probably why she feels so close to her bandmates in Jinjer. "They are my best friends and almost my only friends," she says. "It's really hard for me, as an introvert, to find new friends. Most people want an open book. They want you to just blah-blah-blah all the time. That's how they get information about you. But you have to read me if you want to know me, and most people are too lazy to do that."
"They want everything fast," Abdukhanov adds. "We live in a consumer society, and people are consumers even in relationships. In a way, you could say this album is like a manual for dealing with introverts."
"If you are patient with an introvert, you will discover the treasure," Shmayluk says. "You will have a friend for life. I think it takes a year or two to get to know me, and then dude ... you cannot shut me up!"
Abdukhanov knows Shmayluk better than most. They've been in Jinjer together for a decade. "Over the last 10 years, I think I saw her and talked to her more than anyone else," he says. "Because we're constantly on tour. We went through the nine circles of hell together. We played small clubs with only 10 people in front of us, and now we play huge stages for thousands of people around the world. This journey made us a family."
Of course, the haters are still out there. Lurking. Judging. Commenting. "I try not to read comments, but sometimes it is impossible not to see anything," Abdukhanov says. "I helped to manage some of our social media, and I cannot help but see some exchanges. But it doesn't hurt me much, fortunately."
"We are strong," Shmayluk says. "And I will get revenge."

GIRL ALL OF MY SENTENCES ARE TOO LONG HAHAHAH IN FACT THIS IS TOO LONG SOOO (also why am i 3 days late..😑) anywho it’s 1 in the morning so <33 lovely anon
🥰
oh my god the fact that you cried nearly made me cry too😭😭🥺🥺 (also, your brother LMAO), i wasn‘t even sure if you‘d see it but i immediately thought of you so of COURSE i included you <333
the hulu police lsjsjaiaik, girl i was ready to get a hulu membership when i wanted to watch big time adolescence and i couldn‘t find it anywhereee, and when i got to the payment it said i need a bank account that‘s based in the US or whatever. like bro i was about to pay you!! but i was forced to find it somewhere (and i did, on levidia,— not that i‘ve ever used it because it‘s illegal 😤 i would never!!! i‘d rather support billion dollar companies and spend my money on watching films that i can find for free 🥰🥰🥰 not
i‘ve found chaos walking online so i‘ll watch it som time this week!! also YES TELL ME THE STORY
okay so idk if you watched/are planning on watching falcon and winter soldier but i watched the first episode the other day and they were speaking french (just a few seconds) and I UNDERSTOOD SOME WORDS DLDJDJ and i was so proud of myself. i‘ve only ever learned french with duolingo lol (i only do like 5 mins a day and that‘s why i was so surprised that i understood some of it!!). and yeah apart from latin i feel like italian, german, french and english are all similar in a sense.. i mean obviously they‘re completely different languages but for example there are some grammatical constructions in french that i think i wouldn‘t understand if i only spoke english? so when i translate those things into english you can‘t directly translate them bc you say things differently, but when i translate them into german then it makes more sense to me. idk that‘s something i noticed so i feel like if you already know multiple languages it‘s easier to learn another language compared to if you only know one language and are trying to learn a second one. even if the languages aren‘t similar then i think you get the hang of it easier.
ikd slsjsjs also i don‘t want you to think that i‘m a linguistic genius or anything lmfao, like i‘m only fluent in english and german and i‘m just a wannabe (ew that word) polyglot sksj (yes i had to google polyglot— i do think learning ancient greek would be super cool tho? like imagine studying latin AND ancient greek, whew). and honestly i don‘t think i‘ll ever be fluent in another language bc i don‘t plan on living anywhere other than germany or possibly england and i‘m not dedicated enough to properly learn any other languages esp if i don‘t have anyone to speak the language with. but i still try my best and i just love language/languages as a whole so yeah i‘m happy & just learning as much as i can dkdjh🥰
(I guess language/linguistics are/is my passion (which sounds sooo lame lmaoooo) and the word passion comes from the latin word pati (i think💀) which means to suffer, and in german passion is called Leidenschaft which basically means suffering too, idk why i‘m telling you this maybe you know it already. but ok dumb fun fact, in german you can make compound words with as many words as you like, and the longest official german word is Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz which is a law for the monitoring of labels on beef... this is such a dumb fact but i think about that word like once a day idk why dodjsjsj so... 👁👄👁)
but i‘ll stop boring you with my linguistics talk because truly i don‘t know much about languages but i am interested omg i‘m gonna shut up now.
now water + sharks. (so in non-covid times i always go to croatia with my dad during the summer, and even before ever watching a shark film i was always kind of scared in water.. but after watching so many shark films wldjdj HELP Like you know when you go deeper into the ocean and you can‘t see or feel the ground/floor? anymore.. then i just start imagining sharks. like i can‘t help it i just imagine a shark sneaking up on me or feeling something graze my foot ABD I JUST START FREAKING OUT SSKJSHSJ. idk. anyway kdkdh i do love the ocean/swimming though but the older i get the more i realise how fucking scary the ocean is ( even if we’re gonna disregard sharks)
your brother... what‘s wrong with him? HOw CAN YOU NOT LIKE MUSIC LIKE WHAT THE FAWK
OKAY BUT SAME ABOUT THE ADORE YOU MUSIC VIDEO DLDKDJSJSKSLSLKSKSJSHSH and yeah i have to say harry’s style (styles lol) as a solo artist isn‘t reaaally my cup of tea, and i only like the popular songs from his second album and the first album is only good when i‘m in the right mood (haven‘t actually listened to it in a while though, but kiwi is one of my all time favourites along with only angel but i hate the start, like it takes 40 seconds to actually begin properly). i like mgk and because of him i watched the dirt which is a film about motley crue, and now one of my favourite songs ever is same ol situation and i‘m into rock now lol. +++ justin bieber. I had a justin bieber cardboard cutout thingy😭 i was the biggest Belieber on earth when i was 13-16, but i didn‘t like his last album and tbh he‘s become a bit weird lately, BUT OH MY GOD. i Listened to his new album yesterday and i‘m in LOVE with the song hold on
i really like niall‘s music toooo!!!! And doja cat 😌😌😌😌 And THE VAMPS OG MY GOD. i got to see them live bc they were the opening/support act for little mix and ajdsjskslslsjsjsj. (Also i love concerts, some of the best memories of my life are concerts, i‘ve seen nicki minaj live 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 and justin twice and my heart fills every time i think about how excited i was, it was my first concert ever (16th of September 2016 😌) and i was the happiest person alive seeing justin drew fucking bieber (even if i‘m not tooo sure about justin nowadays)
i have a confession? Idk what hamilton is. I mean I‘ve heard about it and i keep googling it but i‘ve never watched it (is it even a film???? or like a proper musical? also pls tell me you grew up with high school musical. i have a few friends who didn‘t and it makes me so sad 😭😭😭 hsm is the best thing to happen to my childhood , the sooooongs— i still listen to some of them every week or month lool they make me so happy)
(Okay wait i was about to recommend some stormzy songs but you said you‘re not that into rap so i won‘t dksksjl)
What you said about my fic AHSLSLSJB (i wasn‘t sure if you sent an ask about it earlier? idk that might have been someone else, so if it was (and you‘ve read it already) i hope you liked it sksjsj i was...... unsure about it. and i have this reeaaallly long peter fic that i started writing in december and that‘s the only peter thing i currently want to write but also i can‘t because idk how to continue kddjj.) but I’m definitely getting back into writing i have a few blurbs that i want to write so 🥰🥰🥰
Oh and pls as soon as you read this let me know: violet or yellow? (it‘s just a tiny thing for my new theme slsksj)
#lovely anon#BY THE WAY: do not feel bad or apologise for not answering straight away#you can take your time i know it can be exhausting (not bc its anything bad but just because its so much and so long) to answer to my shit#all at once*#so really i don‘t mind if you take a few days or a week or whatever to respond#or if you want to you can respond bit by bit/topic by topic whenever you feel like it#so you don‘t have to concentrate on an ask and my post for like AN HOUR DLSKJ but rather do it in smaller chunks#if you want <3#btw i‘m always so scared that i‘ll type lonely anon instead of lovely dldjdjsksk so if i ever do that i‘m just being#(cue your autocorrect dldkdj) a dumb bitch#its 1 am now sorry if there are any mistakes (i‘ll stop apologing from now now lol but i still am sorry you have to read my word vomit lmao)#*apologis#*from now on#omg

I've been asking myself more and more these days if the language barrier is a real thing in music. I keep wondering, is it true that you could never fully connect to art if it's in a language you can't speak?
It isn't like with visual media, where everyone's supposed to have all these different interpretations. everyone sees the same thing, you just have to hope the subtitles aren't shitty. artists making visual media will deal with the occasional asshole saying they don't want to read subtitles but for the most part, most people will manage to find beauty in films, videos, and paintings no matter where the artist is from. it seems that things are different when it comes to music and i wonder why.
my whole life, I've been singing and dancing to songs in languages i can't speak a word of. a lot of my favorite songs and albums are in languages i barely understand, i couldn't even have a conversation in them. but it's never changed the fact that these songs could move me, they'd make me smile and cry and fill me with strong emotions for people that I'd never met. my parents managed to learn english just by listening to Michael Jackson, Destiny's Child, and Mary Mary on repeat for about 3 years. they'd be listening to all these popular american songs on the radio, not understanding a single word of it, but still dance along and belt out every word as if they did. my mother's even told me about the days everyone in the neighborhood would huddle up by their little TVs and watch american films - they didn't know what was going on, even nowadays we'd be watching something and they still don't get it, even though they've been speaking it for over a decade now. but they still find fascination in "good" art. art that makes you feel something.
i don't speak creole, japanese, spanish, korean, hindi, or zulu but a handful of my favorite songs are in those languages. if you could see me singing along to tricot you'd think i was fluent in japanese. it's always been like that where i grew up, from all the weddings I'd be forced to go to, to all that songs I'd stumble upon on youtube, i always managed to find something beautiful. I've cried myself to sleep listening to things i didn't understand in a typical way. i think music makes you feel things because it has no language barrier. it transcends language.
it'll never stop being surprising to me that the west, usually the us, doesn't seem fond of most languages. i always thought that music was the one thing that would make everyone forget that some of us looked different, or came from different places. i thought music for everyone else was what i saw when everyone was dancing to oliver ngoma at a wedding even though none of us were from gabon. i thought music was just shared emotions. languages are just sounds. mere sounds. there are so many emotions that don't have words attached to them and yet we still treat it like it's everything.
i know it's something a lot of other africans can relate to. as well as latin americans and people from the caribbean and some europeans (mostly french people). but i wish everyone on the planet felt this way. i mean its great to find out a song is about something close to your heart, and it always sucks to find out this one musician you really like has been singing songs about praising fascists and dictators. but those kinds of things exist even if its a song of your mother tongue. i wish i never had to hear "you listen to xyz? you don't even understand what they're saying!" ever again. i wish we didn't shun certain artists because we don't want to do the work of asking what lyrics mean. you'd think more people would take advantage of the technology we have now. you'd think we'd appreciate the people who dedicate so much time and energy and effort to help us understand things a lot better. but nooo you'd rather miss out on something amazing.
music will always be more than just words to me. i wish more people felt that way. i also wish i was alive to enjoy zouk machine more

ØZI for Tatler
published july 3rd, 2020
[translated by me, proofread by @baobeejun]
Free like water, a born star! From Irene Yeh's son to the new king of popular music, the dazzling star you need to know: ØZI!
Bright red highlighted hair, equally red earpieces hanging around his neck. The boy with eye-catching tattoos is sitting on the make-up chair, skipping his feet while eating breakfast and he exudes a rebellious and free, yet delicate and pure atmosphere. Soon after his debut, he was shortlisted for six Golden Melody Awards last year and won Best New Artist. At the mention of his name, everyone will exclaime admiration and excitement, ØZI seems to have become a synonym of "cool" and "red" among the younger generation.
"I think I'm too rational, 100% rational, I should also be a little sentimental." This cool-looking artist was told by his agent that "his temper is very good, he most likely won't look angry." Isn't it a little unexpected for a rational rapper to be so talkative? Doesn't he also like to drink beverages with either honey or strawberry? Everytime ØZI gives a new answer, people have to reconstruct the imagine they already had in mind of him, contrasting to his appearance there is a vibrant and rich soul ready to stir trouble (in a "catching peoples attention" kinda way). Speaking of his definition of freedom, ØZI jokes "Freedom means that my agent won't call me, no work, blocking my agent's calls!" But in fact, the interpretation of freedom in his heart is somewhat aloof and mature: "Because society has a lot of rules, as far as I can tell, no-one is free; from family, love to friendship, they all have their own rules. But freedom comes from inner stability, it should be "like water", just then you're free. When it is placed in different containers, it becomes it's shape, it can adapt to every environment; to me, this state is freedom, because you can be free from restrictions and confined space."
When asked if he's free now, he mutters "Not necessarily, sometimes I get stuck when my inspiration runs out. It's been a little better lately, it wasn't like water in the second half of last year, instead it was more like ice cubes!" Last year was too busy to think, it was described by ØZI "like the mind is drying out". And because of his plans to go to the United States to relax at the beginning of this year - he didn't expect the immediate outbreak to happen - he got more time to produce, "I'm free now, I'm simply water now!", he smiles.
Living in a prominent family of performing artists - his mother Ye Ailing is an all-round entertainer, his father Chen Wenbin is a well-known photographer - ØZI's creative path can be said to be expected. Because his parents are both in the industry, he grew up in a musical environment ever since he was a child. But when it comes to his own creations, in fact, ØZI liked to draw as a kid. In Junior High, he liked to make and arrange music, in High School he began to write melodies, lyrics, from drawings to producing movies, "creations" of change because as a child, he liked to be "original" about this. He had six Music Videos, all on his iPhone. "At first, my dad said that there were a lot of problems with my Music Videos, so I was trying hard to improve, I learned about lighting and so on, just to prove that my Music Videos can look good, I wanted to get his approval!"
The requirement of children of celebrities is a blessing but it's hard to hold a grasp of it, it's difficult to excuse mistakes. The music world describes it as "to be born a Super Saiyan (means something like "Second-Generation-Star" because he's the son of famous parents). ØZI explains: "I was just lucky to be born into a musical family, I have enough space to be understood and supported. My dad knows what it's like to be a creator, my mom knows what it's like to be a performer. So I had the chance to train to become a Super Saiyan." It's a double edged sword, everyone was paying close attention when ØZI was nominated at the Golden Melody Awards. "After the rookie award, in addition to putting myself under a lot of pressure, I didn't change any of my creative motives and I'm very expressive. So if you don't get rewarded, you get mad at yourself." Maybe stress occasionally hinders his creative work, but at the same time, it's also a sign of determination to succeed and break through the golden sunken ship.
ØZI's first well-known Chinese song "Title" is about not being bind by anything, about wanting to have more freedom, more creative freedom for everyone. He's been making music for his "mission to internationalize Chinese Music" from the very beginning. "The internationalisation is something that not everyone can do, we listen to music from Latin America, Hip-Hop, K-Pop, it's all because of their atmosphere. For me, every artist has their own way of interpretating their culture. It's very important to let everyone know "Oh, that's C-Pop!"" And the new plans of ØZI will be followed by the release of some singles, a new album will also be released this year. He also revealed that he's working on three different projects at the same time now, experimental and core concept types. There's even a project that's "looking for the next stage of ØZI" trying to give his music a new image. "There will be a lot of music you have never heard from ØZI before, some experimental music, I can't reveal much!"
He's 100% rational when it comes to his family, but his sentimental tone betrayed him; when he talks about music, he becomes serious. Introducing his new tattoo is as exciting as being a little boy. His soul is free, but "ØZI" still has a lot of unavoidable restrictions.
"ØZI is the character I created, he's the embodiment of self-confidence, he has to be perfect. The self-confidence this character needs will be infused into my spirit, but this is only one part of it", he says slowly. With his high and straight nose bridge and the fine and smooth line of his chin, ØZI looks somewhat like his mother Ye Ailing; but he has taken off the label of being a celebrity's child, that used to stick on him tightly, a long time ago already. He's ØZI, free like water, a born star.
TATLER discusses with ØZI
What do you do to pass the time that make a perfect holiday?
Go to the beach of an uninhabited island alone or with a group of friends, lie on the beach and drink cocktails, read a book, maybe listen to music, sleep.
What do you like to do the most when you don't have to work?
Playing video games, eating, getting a massage, sleeping, watching Netflix.
If you could have one drink with an idol, who would it be?
Canadian Rapper/Singer Drake! So I can understand his logic of running his OVO Empire and see if I can absorb it and apply it on my own label.
Your motto?
The tattoo on my leg, it's a famous quote from "Batman: The Dark Knight Rises": "Why do we fall? So we can learn to pick ourselves up."
Who is your life idol? Why?
Christopher Nolan, the director of "Inception"! Actually, everyone who gives me inspiration for a period of time is my idol.
What would you recommend to watch on Netflix?
I actually watch anything, from serious "13th" to pure entertaining "Too Hot To Handle", I want to absorb different elements.
Please define freedom in one sentence?
Be like Water!
Which abroad city do you want to visit first after the ban gets lifted?
Greece! I went there for the first time when I was shooting the MV to "Paradise Island", and I thought I have to come back when I get the chance to! It has a peaceful charm between the island and the city, it has their own ancient culture and beach parties, everyone is very relaxed and the atmosphere is very cool.
Favourite drink?
Apple Milk or Honey Water, I like the Honey or Strawberry kind.
When your mood is low, what do you do to cheer up?
Playing video games, hanging out with friends, working out.
What games have you been playing lately?
The remake of Final Fantasy 7, the graphics have changed very beautifully.

alrighty, review time!
Do you think Donald wrote the song? He did write a song when he was younger and the lyrics fit him best
I love that Donald is the sane man of the Caballeros
Why did you choose the bathroom? That’s really weird and kind of perverted
I love the picture of a rubber ducky in a top hat on the wall
Just how big is that bathtub? Four grown men were able to fit in it at the same time
Never mess with a man who has a demon-ghost butler
“That’s the FOURTH rich guy’s bathroom we’ve been kicked out of.” I...I would like to know about the other three. And again, WHY THE BATHROOM?!
“We just need someone to listen to us!” Donald giving us the theme/moral of the episode
Was Louie just waiting out there?
Louie looks like a drug dealer. He also looks a bit like the reboot version of himself from that poster in Quack Pack
“And you’re willing to do whatever I say, at any cost whatsoever?” “Well, not any...” “QUIET, DONALD!” Guys, you should listen to Donald, he knows Louie better than you
Poor Donald, the only sane man here
I love the stickers on Louie’s laptop. I wonder if he actually knows how to hack
I love the stupid “it” trends. Hats-Hats and Invisible Piercings, what will they think of next
Of course Dewey would keep up with an IT list. He actually cares about his image/how his peers view him
The lead singer of the Feather Weights looks like a punk girl version of Drake. I’m gonna go with them being related somehow. Or they used to date. Or they go to the same hair stylist. THEY ARE TIED TOGETHER SOMEHOW
Yo-yo tricks were more of a 2000s thing, Dewey (seriously though, does anyone else remember when yo-yos were SUPER POPULAR for some reason?)
Panchito is so ridiculously EXTRA and I LOVE HIM
“These are my people.” Oh sweet Dewford, they wish they were on your level
“Internet fame-the most important fame of all” Well it’s the most achievable
And then Dewey just rolls off screen
“If only someone had a super-elaborate scheme to get in...KA-BOOM!” Dewey’s not the only showman in the family
This show LOVES some big boards
Why/when did Louie plan all of this? I mean he did want the Caballeros to make him their manager so he could get a cut, but why?
Already you can see that Louie’s pride is gonna get in the way
Again, Donald is being the responsible one
I love their signatures. Panchito’s is like a 12 year old girl’s, José’s is curvy, and Donald’s is the least showy. And I love that Panchito thought “Don” was enough lol. He is close to Launchpad levels of ditziness
The pictures Louie uses on his board are GREAT! I love fridge-raiding Panchito
Agent Dewey-License to Chill. Dewey, that was two episodes ago
“I have a very special job for you.” “Oh-ho ho-ho, special.”
Luis P Canard. Is that a false identity Louie already had or did he make it up for the party? Or is there an actual Luis P Canard?
Huey looks SO CUTE! Though he should have known something was up when Louie asked him to forge a signature. Do you think Huey has forged other documents with or without knowing it?
Louie looks good with that black “lipstick”
“Welcome to the scheme.” “What scheme?” “Nothing.” “TELL NO ONE.”
Gyro Gearloose-Kid inventor. Does that mean he was a child prodigy or that he LITERALLY invents kids? Or both? The possible clone’s tube had K.I.D. on it. I bet this will be explored more, probably next episode
I love how they all stare at the earpieces when Gyro says the DEFINITELY won’t explode
I love that the lion statues have sunglasses and there’s a statue of a ballerina hippo from Fantasia
OUR QUEEN HAS ARRIVED
How do ducks whistle if they don’t have lips?
Daisy-smiles, Donald-I WOULD DIE FOR YOU
I love Daisy’s fake laugh
With both of them in tuxes you can really see that Dewey and Louie have different body types. Louie has broader shoulders.
“I’M GONNA DANCE DOWN THE RED CARPET.” No Dewey, that’s for the after party
It’s the PEP guy! I feel like he’s gonna become a villain with how much he’s been embarrassed (and he already LOOKS like a cheesy superhero show villain)
GRAVES IS BACK, BABY
Dewey has made a LOT of enemies
“New plan-Dewey is NOT going to the party!” DAMN, THAT’S COLD
“This is the Dewey-est party in town!”
“Oh, WHY was I cursed to be so FLASHY and UNFORGETTABLE?!” I love my dramatic son
Why did the Caballeros have to switch hats?
“SO TIGHT. !”
WE NEED MORE DJ DAFT DUCK
Ok, real talk? That party looks boring as fuck
I like that there’s sweat when Dewey pulls off his helmet. It’s the little details
“Everyone listens to my plan.” Dewey looks PISSED
“The plan to wow Glamour with our haunting melodies.” Panchito is Drake/DW if he was a Latin Lover. THEY NEED TO MEET. IT WOULD BE HAMMY AND GLORIOUS
“You mean our SICK dance beats!”
Donald is like “girls, girls, you’re BOTH pretty”
But seriously, they need to decide what direction they want to go with their sound
Donald is ALWAYS the voice of reason (except in The Town Where Everyone Was Nice, he got a bit caught up in that lie)
“I will charm my way on stage with my golden voice.” #youtried
That smirk José gives him, beautiful
“Easy, grownups.” YOU JUST GOT DISSED BY A 10 YEAR OLD!
“So I’ll dazzly Daisy with my hip, cool yo-yo tricks.” I would have liked to see how that played out
Does Louie have some kind of dirt on Jane? Why does she keep helping him out? Why does she call him “Mr. Duck?”
Glamour is a BITCH. And it seems like Daisy might share the same luck as Donald and Della
SERIOUSLY, WHAT DO YOU HAVE ON HER, LOUIE?!
Donald was posing all cool
Why send Donald in to do the most important part of the plan? At least have someone with him. Louie should have gone with him so Donald could distract Daisy and Louie could use his pickpocket skills to get the pass. Louie did not account for the variables
“Ooooh PHOOEY.” I love that all of the Duck family say Donald’s catchphrase
POOR DEWEY!
I love Louie’s other distraction ideas-explosion, food poisoning, SET FREE A WILD MONGOOSE, ghosts, ANOTHER explosion
LET DAISY SAY FUCK
I’m pretty sure Donald got a boner when he saw Daisy DESTROY that vase (I also found it hot). He was scaroused
OUCH. That HAD to have hurt/broken SOMETHING
How did Louie get that picture of Webby? Hell, how was that pic taken in the first place?
“WHEEEEEEE” Webby knows what’s up
“MY FAULT! It’s...your bag.” Oh Donald
LET DAISY SAY FUCK
“My band is sorta...crashing the party.” DONALD YOU ARE TOO CUTE
The yo-yo just rolls away
Louie, you hurt Dewey’s feelings! Also, your plans are pretty ridiculous too, including the one you are currently trying to pull off. There had to be a better idea than a harpy
Listy-er
GLAMOUR MUST DIE FOR WHAT SHE DID TO LOUIE! IT’S A GOOD THING DONALD WASN’T THERE OR ELSE SHE WOULD BE
“I don’t want to be at Funzo’s forever.” “Why not?” Oh Webby, so innocent to the horrors of minimum wage jobs. Also it’s nice to see Webby being able to have an ordinary conversation with someone
FALCON’S EYEBROWS ARE MESMERIZING
It’s equal parts cute and sad how long Dewey takes to count
MANNY IS FUCKING SWOLE
Manny is 0 for 2 when it comes to being the muscle (I’m counting him vs Mega-Beaks as well)
“That was odd.” You have no idea
Donald sees Daisy as the GODDESS she is. GET YOU A MAN LIKE DONALD
I KNEW IT! I KNEW SHE WANTED TO BE A FASHION DESIGNER! It was like the only guess I got right so let me have this
“Nobody listens to me either.” Awww
“They don’t understand me.” AWWW
“Well that’s weird, I understand you perfectly.” MY HEART!!!
I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH! And when it changes into how Daisy hears him...chef’s kisses. It reminded me of Remember Me from Coco and I Love You Too Much from Book of Life
Real talk-the song really got me. I feel a lot like Donald. A lot of times it feels like no one is listening or understands me because my thought process is a bit different. Or they can understand but they don’t care, like how Daisy feels. When Donald sings for her, I teared up because I want to be comfortable enough with someone to let down my guard like that. Music is a big part of who I am so I would love if someone sang for me even if they don’t have the “perfect” voice. I want someone to feel comfortable enough with me to let down their guard and be real
Daisy is a woman of ACTION
Do you think she’s been stuck in that elevator before?
“My kids!” “Wait, you have kids?” Whenever Donald calls them his kids I gain 5 years to my lifespan. I can’t wait for Daisy to officially meet the kids
“Oh no, not again!” Starting to rethink your life-choices aren’t ya?
I love Mark. He’s so stupid and out of touch with the real world
“Oh Gravesy! Long time, no crime.” GRAVEBEAK LIVES ON!
I love Mark’s hoverboard crashing and catching fire in the background. And then it chases Slash
Haha, Mark’s name is Markus. What a dewb
I was rooting for rich lesbian aunt, but mom works too
Graves is SO DONE with these people
Dewey is all of us
Poor Louie. His self confidence is the most fragile of the kids
Nerp
“Just listen to me for once.” WE ALL NEED TO LISTEN TO EACH OTHER, THAT’S THE THEME OF THE EPISODE
THEY’RE HOLDING HANDS! And Mark seemed into it ;)
“I want to look away but I can’t” CALLING IT NOW, THIS LINE’S GONNA BE A MEME
I want Dewey’s yo-yo skills to be a reoccurring thing
That’s one of the things he has in common with his uncle-being a performer even if they aren’t the best at it
Louie’s face as he sneaks away is great
“The failure of it is ridiculous...and BEAUTIFUL!” Gonna use that to describe myself from now on
Dewey is IT. SO FABULOUS!
Daisy, maybe you should let the man get rid of them
DOUBLE BADASS ONE-LINERS
LET DONALD SAY FUCK
HE’S SO PROUD OF HIS BOY
I like the “totally not Pirates of the Caribbean” music that accompanies José when he’s fighting
“Nice singing.” “Nice moves.” NOW KISS
“Oo, nice dagger.” Webby, not the time for that
There is NO WAY that the scene with Gabby and Webby isn’t foreshadowing SOMETHING
“I gotta get out of Duckburg.” Jane starts a GoFundMe page to get out of Duckburg when she gets home
BATTLE COUPLE!
DAISY WILL FUCK YOU UP
DON’T MESS WITH HER MAN
It was then Donald realized that he had met his future wife
DONALD AIN’T GONNA TAKE THAT SHIT FROM YOU
It was then Daisy realized she had met her future husband
“LOVE YOUR BLOG” Who knew Manny kept on on the latest trends
Glamour probably realized those fuckers were crazy so she should back off
SILENT M’MA CABRERA!
OMG EVEN THE TREE HAS FUCKING SUNGLASSES
Manny is one suave motherfucker
Glamour playing with the yo-yo while Mark acts like a spoiled brat
DEWEY IS PROUD OF HIS DADNALD!
IF WE DON’T GET DEWEY’S DOZEN AT SOME POINT I’M SUING
“Our brotherhood is the greatest scheme of all!” SO FUCKING WHOLESOME! MORE LOUIE AND DEWEY PLOTS
“HEY, YOU’RE MESSING WITH MY MOJO!” Don’t be a hater, Manny!
“I could listen to it all night.” DAAAAAWWWWWWW
GAAAAAAHHHHH THIS EPISODE WAS SO GOOD! I love that there was a common theme of feeling like you aren’t being heard. Daisy felt like she was too unimportant to be listened to, Louie doesn’t listen to Dewey because he feels like Dewey isn’t serious enough, and NO ONE listens to Donald because his voice is hard to understand. In the end they all get heard, with Donald and Daisy getting the bonus of finding someone who understands them. The two of them really are relationship goals. I cannot WAIT for more wholesome Donisy content. This one bumped Quack Pack down from my favorite so far.

Dear Brazil,
Of my many trips to South America, I’ve never had the occasion to visit you. Most were to the Andes Mountains, to observe the magnificent southern skies via an international consortium of high-tech telescopes. But I’ve nonetheless thought about you quite often.
As a native of the United States of America, I know what we casually think about you. In no particular order, you’ve got the world’s largest, and most important rain forest. You’ve got the world’s most massive river, every minute, draining into the Atlantic Ocean a volume of water that would fill a football stadium. And yes, we knew about your river and rain forest long before Amazon.com borrowed the name.
Want more? Nobody doesn’t love Brazil nuts. In fact, in the USA, we have to spring for the “premium” package to get them in our mixed nuts. And even those among us who barely follow soccer know of your famous football teams, fully expecting to see you in the final rounds of the World Cup every four years. We also know about your stunning beaches because they’ve appeared in song—“The Girl/Boy from Ipanema” among them. We know about your religious festivals, Mardi Gras especially, as we attempt to imitate the intensity and joy of those celebrations—in dance and in music—on our side of the hemisphere. We know about your coffee. And I, for one, love your flag. It’s got a slice of the night sky on it; no fewer than two-dozen stars, each retrace authentic constellations, the Southern Cross included.
So, if you asked any of us in the USA what we think when your name gets mentioned, we typically draw from that list.
You know what we don’t notice? Half the time we fly a regional jet between cities, on American Airlines and other carriers, we board an Embraer to do so. Sure, the safety card says Embraer on it. We might even find the name in small print somewhere on the fuselage. But hardly any of us knows that the airplane is designed and built in Brazil. You could boast “Brazilian Engineering” but you don’t. Why not? Germany has no hesitation embracing that claim. But, of course, they’ve earned it. Everyone knows the quality of German-engineered products, which happens to infuse their aerospace economy, the third largest in the world.
But wait. One of the greatest pioneers in early aviation was Brazilian. A brilliant and inventive engineer who was highly decorated in his time, Alberto Santos-Dumont guided the world’s transition from lighter-than-air to heavier-than-air transportation. The value of such cultural seeds, planted at the birth of an industry, may be incalculable. A century later, you have become a leader in biofuel technologies—a key step towards a green economy where our harmony with nature will determine whether we thrive, survive, or go extinct. You also have an ambitious space agency, and you are the sixth largest aerospace industry in the world. In Latin America, you are also a leader in IT. And in a country famous for its agriculture, nearly a third of your economy rides on the back of a tech-infused manufacturing sector.
So maybe it’s time the world knew more about this. Maybe it’s time Brazilians knew more about this. Maybe you are overdue for displaying products that declare: “Engineered in Brazil.”
Whatever else is, or is not, true in the world, tomorrow’s growth economies—even those that may be purely agricultural—will pivot on today’s investments in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. In a democracy, these investments flow from a scientifically literate electorate that chooses enlightened leaders who know and understand the value of education, of exploration, and discovery. Without these perspectives, we’d all still be living in caves, with fellow dwellers grunting: “You can’t explore outside. First you must solve our cave problems.”
Lest anyone forget, the first (and only) South American astronaut, an aeronautical engineer, was Brazilian. And when did he launch? In 2006, the centennial year of Santos-Dumont’s first successful airplane. And what did he bring to space with him? The Brazilian Flag, and a jersey from your national football team.
Countries that struggle the most in the world tend to be those with low education levels and an absence of STEM in their culture. You have the resources and the legacy to lead all of Latin America, if not the world, in what a country of tomorrow should be—in what a country of tomorrow should aspire to.
If you embrace and bolster your STEM industries—and the entire tech sector—then the dreams of students in the educational pipeline will have no limit, as they enter a world where rockets are what fuel people’s ambitions as they exit the cave door.
Respectfully Submitted,
Neil deGrasse Tyson

Caro Brasil,
Atenciosamente,
Neil deGrasse Tyson
