Thinking about.....Barbatos being lowkey unhinged whenever he is slightly jealous. You can't really tell from his polite mask that he has put on but he's going through every possible torture methods in his head as this guest at Diavolo's ball is getting a little too friendly for his comfort.
You notice his eye twitching from annoyance when the said guest puts a fleeting hand on your arm, laughing at their own joke. Barbatos acts nonchalant when you drag him away to a little secluded space, though you can see his decorum slipping, second by second.
"Barbatos, no."
You get just a shrug in response. "Lets go back, dear", a polite smile as he leads you gently back to the main hall. You decide to leave it at that and instead enjoy the party, making sure that Mammon isn't sneaking his way into the royal treasury.
A few days later, you decide to make your way to Barbatos, having nothing better to do for the day and missing him.
While you're with him, chatting on about your day, a thought strikes you as you ask him about that one way-too-friendly guest. It was as if they disappeared from the ball afterwards.
You, again, get only a shrug in response, "I have no idea what you are talking about".
You pretend not to notice the way his lips threaten to quirk up.

As I deepen my study with Chinese, the more I'm struck by how word meanings work. The monolingual USAdians I know or encounter online, who studied only as much as needed to get through school, really do seem to think languages are plug and play: know the word in both languages, and swap.
But that couldn't be further from the truth. There's on Chinese word, 稳当 (wĕn dang), that's really struck me for that. Because my flashcards give three translations for 稳当: reliable, secure, and stable. And in English these words are all fairly different! Clearly related but very much do not mean the same thing. How can one Chinese word mean these three different concepts? Well, of course, it doesn't. 稳当 means 稳当, some fusion of those three concepts we have words for in English but not quite any of them, that makes it appropriate to use in places where English would use any of those three. There are surely shades of meaning, and which interpretation of the meaning is most appropriate to a given context will be understood upon reading.
Now, expand this understanding - that a word doesn't mean (exact direct swap in English) but rather the word means the word, and we approximate it to the closest English equivalent we can - to *every single word in every single sentence in an entire book.*
Then translate that book.
Translation is an art, not a science, requiring tremendous verisimilitude in *both* languages, and an understanding of the story, and a deep familiarity with the culture (social, historical, linguistic, etc.) of the original work, and often knowledge of the authors intent (if possible to ascertain), and a range of other skills. Translation will always be interpretive and transformative, because (word in one language) doesn't precisely mean (word in another language). They're not "the same." If I present you a sentence with 稳当 in it, does it mean stable, reliable, or secure? Well that depends. On what? How it's being used, the surrounding context, other factors, and of course... the reader or translators interpretation.
It drives me insane when I see people present alternate translations as some kind of "gotcha" that one translator got things wrong. And don't get me wrong - of course some translations ARE just wrong, obviously if I translate 稳当 to mean "goldfish" I'm not interpreting I'm just incorrect. But beyond obvious mistakes, a world of nuance exists, and different translators can in good faith reach different conclusions on the most appropriate translation. This is WHY famous books not in English get translated repeatedly by different people, and why a reader would want to read multiple translations of the same work - to see, in different translations, some shadow of the wonderful nuance embodied by the original words that do not, and cannot, simply be swapped 1 to 1 for a perfect English translation. And this is *especially* true of a language like Chinese, which is ancient and beautiful and deeply steeped in understandings of Chinese history and literature.
Why do you think I and many others are studying Chinese for years? For me, it's all so I can read the actual books myself and get that much closer to the story, that much closer to my own interpretation. I'll never have the skills of a knowledgeable translator - this isn't my profession, it's my hobby - but I'll gleen things nonetheless and it's important to me to try.
Too many of yall disrespect those skills so much that you'll throw a sentence of a language you know nothing about into Google translate and then declare the translator Wrong (and sometimes Bad and Malicious) based on that.
稳当 means 稳当. It doesn't mean "reliable." It doesn't mean "the exact translation of 稳" plus "the exact translation of 当". It's a Chinese word with a Chinese definition that we retrofit English on to.
And the hardest part? Look, I'm still a Chinese novice. For all I fucking know, 稳当 actually MIGHT have three distinct definitions. Everything I said about it above might be wrong. I don't know enough Chinese yet to know for sure, and that's a level of nuance and understanding I'll only reach by reading more.
Multiply that by *every single word in both the original language and the language it's being translated into.*
That's what translation is.
Good luck.

I've been seeing some shit on how certain folks apparently think it's like, surprising that Penelope just accepted Odysseus and all the stuff he's done without question and/or disappointment in Would You Fall in Love With Me Again when like... Not only against Odyssey!Penelope but ALSO Epic's. We may have only gotten 2 songs it's still a concept album. THERE'S STILL TIME! of the real Penelope in Epic but like, even then we can see that she's equally as wild

Need more love for Akira who is a huge dork loser freak typa guy I think. His autistic boy swag is so unparalleled and he’s so awkward and he gets so invested and excited about the most bizarre things ever like. Boy gets top of the class and he’s like Cool 👍 but he makes a plate of curry that doesn’t suck and his reaction is YES 💪 and then proceeds to shovel the whole thing into his mouth in like 9 seconds. He makes lockpicks at his desk in school and talks to his cat with other people around like it’s not the weirdest shit ever in the world, he’s read every single book he can get his hands on, he regularly goes to eat 15lb hamburgers like it’s a thing to do, he cranks the treadmill up to 100% and then falls the fuck off immediately, he bought his own pool cue and attempted trick shots with varying levels of success, he back flipped through a stained glass window like “see ya!” like. If that’s not a boy who’s performing based on tropes he’s seen before idk what is. He is just so strange and peculiar and he has no idea how to express himself he is just there like :3 and everyone loves him for it and they are RIGHT

The love triangle WORKS because:
Patrick has Art as soulmates do, seeing and understanding each other in a way no one else can. In silent stares and sly smirks and shared beds and a complete mastery one the other’s psyche.
Patrick loves Tashi in the way being full only comes after hunger. Oil fueling fire, burning bright before burning everything around them. Feeling love for the first time and never knowing when its too much or not enough.
Art needs Patrick in the same way you have a side of the bed you always sleep on, a brand of detergent you always buy. Stability in the unpredictable, how Patrick knows when to push and when to pull. How he has the spare key to the lock box where Art hides his desires.
Art loves Tashi like a dog needs a master. Freedom in being directed and told, the security you get from being a devoted follower to a higher being.
(And once Tashi is dragged into their orbit like a stray asteroid taken off its course)
Tashi loves Art in the same way you hate all your wasted potential. An alternative future, a time machine that could take you to where your body has not betrayed you. In him and through him she’s given every path: as a wife, a mother, a coach, a puppet master but never a player.
Tashi wants Patrick in the way smokers ignores labels on cigarette boxes. The beauty of self-destruction and passion she’s lost. Constantly chasing a high that hurts so good you’d risk everything to have it again.
Tashi hates and loves them both in equal measure. Resenting them for taking the one thing she loved away from her and forcing her to live her own dreams through two diverging paths. Loving them enough to push them back together where they belong.
And yeah, because the third in their love triangle was always tennis🙄

ive been thinking about this today and just feel the need to sing praises to it
the last stand fight is literally one of my favourites if not the favourite from D20
and, you know, its probably not the hardest or the most story important one, but god its just so good
like the fact that non of them dropped??? that they didnt even get that injured and yeah on some part it obviously was the dice as it often tends to be in dnd but it was also them showing how well they work together
i feel like they all play into their strengths very well it this fight and they even talk about it in the adventuring party like if it werent for spell casters with area of effect spell the fighters would stand no chance, but also noone else could probably tank all that shit from the purple worm like gorgug
and like the decision from emily axford to disguise herself as the proctor was so good and yeah again luck also played into that but if she didnt do it, there would be no chance at even having that luck
and also her spirit guardians (love that spell) delt so much damage, and adaine coming in with the scatter to move the proctor away, which leads to kristin coming closer to there, which allows her to see kipper whats her face and stop whatever she was about to do
and then theres the exams part which they fully blow out of the park, like im pretty sure there was at least one question from like freshman year like prompts to you for remembering, also them actually attempting the math and essay and the essay actually kind of making sense and being about something that the characters genuinely care about
even if we go back to the dice, fig is struggling it that fight (and honestly the whole season) but because of so many good strategical decisions that emily makes, the impact of the dice is not as big as it could have been, if she had done things differently
also everyones vibe is so good the entire fight, like this fight was not made to be easy, they were probably met to at least drop maybe even multiple times, but they are having fun with it, joking around about the rats and the jellies and honestly its a very on brand fight for the bad kids
i also just remember the amount of nat 20 zac rolled in that fight, like that was insane
