pray for me, y'all.... im finally trying to actually read some of my old required philosophy readings from uni..... nearly 10 years later... all bc I could start to feel my brain rotting from the inside out, from all the fb watch bs and youtube shorts and general yt stuff bullshit that I've been watching non-stop since I left my job in march lmao.
part of this, is me starting to use my brain to actually read a Physical Book™️ as well.... bc last week I went to get the undercarriage of my car fixed at the car body shop..... I went to that area's local mall to kill the hour and a half they took to fix it. in the food court of the mall, they had a community library shelf thing, that so many places have now.... where people just leave their unused old books for people to peruse while eating a subway, or fish and chips meal, or whatever else for lunch.
on that shelf, I finally jumped onto/into Michelle Obama's memoir Becoming.... which i've been meaning to listen to the audiobook of on scribd (which I've deactivated since I'm broke rn); for ages. and y'all. I can't stop reading it. it's made me finally look into international relations, which was a subject I always wanted to do at uni... but just didn't want to do the debating side of it lmao (and also bc I was thinking of doing it if I'd applied for that cadetship at my local uni.... which I didn't lmao). I'm reading my old intro to philosophy textbook- philosophy for everyone (ebook).... which I completely and utterly ignored during undergrad on purpose.
just. say what you want about the Obama's. but at least Michelle has kicked my ass into paperback reading, and philosophy text overdrive.... making me realise just how dead and numb my brain has been; since I dropped causal reading of ANY books as a hobby..... for endless tumblr, youtube shorts (and now also actors reviewing their careers through vanity fair or GQ)..... endless make-up or skincare review/tutorial videos or endless repeats of some of my fave stand up comics bits from their netflix specials or w/e (which I've watched so often now that I can recite some of them word for word or paraphrase them well enough in a semi-okay impression of them).... just an endless stream of bullshit, really.
just yeah. at least im reading again. and finally using my brain. im not using my phone for like at least an hour or two (2) at a time, when I really get into the groove of reading. it's wild tbh. but I will really have to train my brain not to re-read and re-read and re-read, ad infintum, one or two sentences on a page; whilst trying to read philosophy texts like on liberty (like im attempting rn lmao). bc that's exactly how I gave up on all of my philosophy readings in the first place..... bc having to re-read a sentence like 3 times made me feel stupid asf.
yeah. im just here to say. for the love of god. pick up a print book every once in a while. or hell, even an e-book through your local library's e-book app (eg, libby/overdrive or borrowbox). or if you have one, your kindle (that's where some of my international relations stuff is and my old philosophy textbook) or other e-reader. and yeah I know. once I get a job (lmao the job markets shit) I won't be raving like this, about wanting to read anything other than an audiobook on the way to and from work everyday. I'll end up back in the loop of nothing but fb watch etc. I will be the last person to join, if at all, the company's book-club. I didn't even join the short lived one at my old work.
just try to make an effort to read something, anything. get the fuck away from youtube and other social media reels/shorts etc etc brain rot and read... idek comics or something fun. a kids' book, like Grug or the little miss/mister men, just for shits and giggles, to turn off your brain... instead of going down the reels and shorts or tiktok holes so often that you can literally feel your brain melting to mush.

Insights into DAI’s development from Blood, Sweat, and Pixels
The book is by game industry journalist Jason Schreier (it’s an interesting read and well-written, I recommend it). This is the cliff notes version of the DAI chapter. This info isn’t new as the book is from 2017 (I finally got around to buying it). Some insight into DAO, DA2 and cancelled DA projects is also given. Cut for length.
BW hoped that DA would become the LotR of video games. DAO’s development was “a hellish seven-year slog”
The DAI team are compared to a chaotic “pirate ship”, which is what they called themselves internally. “It’ll get where it needs to go, but it’s going to go all over the place. Sail over here. Drink some rum. Go over here. Do something else. That’s how Mark Darrah likes to run his team.” An alternative take from someone else who worked on the game: “It was compared to a pirate ship because it was chaotic and the loudest voice in the room usually set the direction. I think they smartly adopted the name and morphed it into something better.”
A game about the Inquisition and the large-scale political conflicts it solves across Thedas, where the PC was the Inquisitor, was originally the vision for ‘DA2′. Plans had to change when SW:TOR’s development kept stalling and slipping. Frustrated EA execs wanted a new product from BW to bolster quarterly sales targets, and decided that DA would have to fill the gap. BW agreed to deliver DA2 within 16 months. “Basically, DA2 exists to fill that hole. That was the inception. It was always intended to be a game made to fit in that”
BW wanted to call it DA: Exodus, but EA’s marketing execs insisted on DA2, no matter what that name implied
DAO’s scope (Origin stories, that amount of big areas, variables, reactivity) was just not doable in a year, even if everyone worked overtime. To solve this problem, BW shelved the Inquisition idea and made a risky call: DA2 would be set in one city over time, allowing locations to be recycled and months to be shaved off dev time. They also axed DAO features like customizing party members’ equipment. These were the best calls they were able to make on a tight line
Many at BW are still proud of DA2. Those that worked on it grew closer from all being in it together
In certain dark accounting corners of EA, despite fan response to DA2 and its lower sales compared to DAO, DA2 is considered a wild success
By summer 2011 BW decided to cancel DA2′s expansion Exalted March in favor of a totally new game. They needed to get away from the stigma of DA2, reboot the franchise and show they could make triple-A quality good games.
DAI was going to be the most ambitious game BW had ever made and had a lot to prove (that BW could return to form, that EA wasn’t crippling the studio, that BW could make an ‘open-world’ RPG with big environments). There was a bit of a tone around the industry that there were essentially 2 tiers of BW, the ME team and then everyone else, and the DA team had a scrappy desire to fight back against that
DAI was behind schedule early on due to unfamiliar new technology; the new engine Frostbite was very technically challenging and required more work than anyone had expected. Even before finishing DA2 BW were looking for a new engine for the next game. Eclipse was creaky, obsolete, not fully-featured, graphically lacking. The ME team used Unreal, which made inter-team collab difficult. “Our tech strategy was just a mess. Every time we’d start a new game, people would say, ‘Oh, we should just pick a new engine’.”
After meeting with an EA exec BW decided on Frostbite. Nobody had ever used it to make an RPG, but EA owned FB dev studio DICE, and the engine was powerful and had good graphic capabilities & visual effects. If BW started making all its games on FB, it could share tech with sister studios and borrow tools when they learned cool new tricks.
For a while they worked on a prototype called Blackfoot, to get a feel for FB and to make a free-to-play DA MP game. It fizzled as the team was too small, which doesn’t lend itself well to working with FB, and was cancelled
BW resurfaced the old Inquisition idea. What might a DA3 look like on FB? Their plan by 2012 was to make an open-world RPG heavily inspired by Skyrim that hit all the beats DA2 couldn’t. “My secret mission was to shock and awe the players with the massive amounts of content.” People complained there wasn’t enough in DA2. “At the end of DAI, I actually want people to go, ‘Oh god, not [another] level’.”
It was originally called Dragon Age 3: Inquisition
BW wanted to launch on next-gen consoles only but EA’s profit forecasters were caught up in the rise of iPad and iPhone gaming and were worried the next-gen consoles wouldn’t sell well. As a safeguard EA insist it also ship on current-gen. Most games at that time followed this strategy. Shipping on 5 platforms at once would be a first for BW
Ambitions were piling up. This was to be BW’s first 3D open-world game, and their first game on Frostbite, an engine that had never been used to make RPGs. It needed to be made in roughly two years, it needed to ship on 5 platforms, and, oh yeah, it needed to restore the reputation of a studio that had been beaten up pretty badly. “Basically we had to do new consoles, a new engine, new gameplay, build the hugest game that we’ve ever made, and build it to a higher standard than we ever did. With tools that don’t exist.”
FB didn’t have RPG stats, a visible PC, spells, save systems, a party of 4 people, the same kind of cutscenes etc and couldn’t create any of those things. BW had to create these on top of it. BW initially underestimated how much work this would be. BW were the FB guinea pigs. Early on in DAI’s development, even the most basic tasks were excruciating, and this impacted even fundamental aspects of game design and dev. When FB’s tools did function they were finicky and difficult. DICE’s team supported them but had limited resources and were 8 hours ahead. Since creating new content in FB was so difficult, trying to evaluate its quality became impossible. FB engine updates made things even more challenging. After every one, BW had to manually merge and test it; this was debilitating, and there were times when the build didn’t work for a month or was really unstable.
Meanwhile the art department were having a blast. FB was great for big beautiful environments. For months they made as much as possible, taking educated guesses when they didn’t know yet what the designers needed. “For a long time there was a joke on the project that we’d made a fantastic-looking screenshot generator, because you could walk around these levels with nothing to do. You could take great pictures.”
The concept of DAI as open-world was stymying the story/writers and gameplay/designers teams. What were players going to do in these big landscapes? How could BW ensure exploring remained fun after many hours? Their teams didn’t have time for system designers to envision, iterate and test a good “core gameplay loop” (quests, encounters, activities etc). FB wouldn’t allow it. Designers couldn’t test new ideas or answer questions because basic features were missing or didn’t exist yet.
EA’s CEO told BW they should have the ability to ride dragons and that this would make DAI sell 10 million copies. BW didn’t take this idea very seriously
BW had an abstract idea that the player would roam the world solving problems and building up power or influence they could use. But how would that look/work like in-game? This could have used refinement and testing but instead they decided to build some levels and hope they could figure it out as they went.
One day in late 2012, after a year of strained development on DAI, Mark Darrah asked Mike Laidlaw to go to lunch. “We’re walking out to his car,” Laidlaw said, “and I think he might have had a bit of a script in his head. [Darrah] said, ‘All right, I don’t actually know how to approach this, so I’m just going to say it. On a scale of one to apocalyptic... how upset would you be if I said [the player] could be, I dunno, a Qunari Inquisitor?’”
Laidlaw was baffled. They’d decided that the player could be only a human in DAI. Adding other playable races like Darrah was asking for would mean they’d need to quadruple their budget for animation, voice acting, and scripting.
“I went, ‘I think we could make that work’,” Laidlaw said, asking Darrah if he could have more budget for dialogue.
Darrah answered that if Laidlaw could make playable races happen, he couldn’t just have more dialogue. He could have an entire year of production.
Laidlaw was thrilled. “Fuck yeah, OK,” he recalled saying.
MD had actually already realized at this point it’d be impossible to finish DAI in 2013. They needed at least a year’s delay and adding the other playable races was part of a plan/planned pitch to secure this. He was in the process of putting together a pitch to EA: let BW delay the game, and in exchange it’d be bigger and better that anyone at EA had envisioned. These new marketing points included playable races, mounts and a new tactical camera. If EA wouldn’t let them delay, they would have had to cut things. Going into that BW were confident but nervous, especially in the wake of EA’s recent turmoil where they’d just parted ways with their CEO and had recruited a new board member while they hunted for a new one. They didn’t know how the new board member would react, and the delay would affect EA’s projections for that fiscal year. Maybe it was the convincing pitch, or the exec turmoil, or the specter of DA2, or maybe EA didn’t like being called “The Worst Company in America”. Winning that award 2 years in a row had had a tangible impact on the execs and led to feisty internal meetings on how to repair EA’s image. Whatever the reasons, EA greenlit the delay.
The PAX Crestwood demo was beautiful but almost entirely fake. By fall 2013, BW had implemented many of FB’s ‘parts’, but still didn’t know what kind of ‘car’ they were making. ML and team scripted the PAX demo by hand, entirely based on what BW thought would be in the game. The level & art assets were real but the gameplay wasn’t. “Part of what we had to do is go out early and try to be transparent because of DA2. And just say, ‘Look, here, it’s the game, it’s running live, it’s at PAX.’ Because we wanted to make that statement that we’re here for fans.”
DA2 hung on the team like a shadow. There was insecurity, uncertainty, they had trouble sticking to one vision. Which DA2 things were due to the short dev time and which were bad calls? What stuff should they reinvent? There were debates over combat (DAO-style vs DA2-style) and arguments over how to populate the wilderness.
In the months after that demo, BW cut much of what they’d shown in it. Even small features went through many permutations. DAI had no proper preproduction phase (important for testing and discarding things), so leads were stretched thin and had to make impulsive decisions.
By the end of 2013, DAI had 200+ people working on it, and dozens of additional outsourced artists in Russia and China. Coordinating all the work across various departments was challenging and a full-time job for several people. At this sheer scale of game dev, there are many complexities and inter-dependencies. Work finally became significantly less tedious and more doable when BW and DICE added more features to FB. Time was running out though, and another delay was a no.
The team spent many hours in November and December piecing together a “narrative playable” version of the game to be the holiday period’s game build for BW staff to test that year. Feedback on the demo was bad. There were big complaints on story, that it didn’t make sense and was illogical. Originally the PC became Inquisitor and sealed the breach in the prologue, which removed a sense of urgency. In response the writers embarked on Operation Sledgehammer (breaking a bone to set it right), radically revising the entire first act.
The other big piece of negative feedback was that battles weren’t fun. Daniel Kading, who had recently joined BW and brought with him a rigorous new method for testing combat in games, went to BW leadership with a proposal: give him authority to open his own little lab with the other designers and call up the entire team for mandatory play sessions for test purposes. They agreed and he used this experiment to get test feedback and specifically pinpoint where problems were. Morale took a turn for the better that week, DK’s team made several tweaks, and through these sessions feedback ratings went from 1.2 to 8.8 four weeks later.
Many on the team wished they didn’t have to ship for old consoles (clunky, less powerful). BW leadership decided not to add features to the next-gen versions that wouldn’t be possible on the older ones, so that both versions of the game played the same. This limited things and meant the team had to find creative solutions. “I probably should’ve tried harder to kill [the last-gen] version of the game”, said Aaryn Flynn. In the end the next-gen consoles sold very well and only 10% of DAI sales were on last-gen.
“A lot of what we do is well-intentioned fakery,” said Patrick Weekes, pointing to a late quest called “Here Lies The Abyss”. “When you assault the fortress, you have a big cut scene that has a lot of Inquisition soldiers and a lot of Grey Wardens on the walls. And then anyone paying attention or looking for it as you’re fighting through the fortress will go, ‘Wow, I’m only actually fighting three to four guys at a time.’ Because in order for that to work [on old gen], you couldn’t have too many different character types on screen.”
Parts of DAI were still way behind schedule because it was so big and complex, and because some tools hadn’t started functioning until late on. Some basic features weren’t able to be implemented til the last minute (they were 8 months from ship before they could get all party members in the squad. At one point PW was playtesting to check if Iron Bull’s banter was firing, and realized there was no way to even recruit IB) and some flaws couldn’t be identified til the last few months. Trying to determine flow and pacing was rough.
They couldn’t disappoint fans again. They needed to take the time to revise and polish every aspect of DAI. “I think DAI is a direct response to DA2,” said Cameron Lee. “DAI was bigger than it needed to be. It had everything but the kitchen sink in it, to the point that we went too far... I think that having to deal with DA2 and the negative feedback we got on some parts of that was driving the team to want to put everything in and try to address every little problem or perceived problem.”
At this point they had 2 options: settle for an incomplete game, which would disappoint fans especially post-DA2, or crunch. They opted to crunch. It was the worst period of extended overtime in DAI’s development yet and was really rough: late nights, weekends, lost family time, 12-14 hour days, stress, mental health impacts.
During 2014′s crunch, they finally finished off features they wished they’d nailed down in year 1. They completed the Power (influence) system and added side quests, hidden treasures and puzzles. Things that weren’t working like destructible environments were promptly removed. The writers rewrote the prologue at least 6 times, but didn’t have enough time to pay such attention to the ending. Just a few months before launch pivotal features like jumping were added.
By summer BW had bumped back release by another 6 weeks for polish. DAI had about 99,000 bugs in it (qualitative and quantitative; things like “I was bored here” are a bug). “The number of bugs on an open-world game, I’ve never seen anything like it. But they’re all so easy to fix, so keep filing these bugs and we’ll keep fixing them.” For BW it was harder to discover them, and the QA team had to do creative experimentation and spend endless late nights testing things. PW would take builds home to let their 9 year old son play around. Their son was obsessed with mounting and dismounting the horse and accidentally discovered a bug where if you dismounted in the wrong place, all your companions’ gear would vanish. “It was because my son liked the horse so much more than anyone else ever had or will ever like the horse.”
MD had a knack for prioritizing which bugs should be fixed, like the one where you could get to inaccessible areas by jumping on Varric’s head. “Muscle memory is incredibly influential at this point. Through the hellfire which is game development, we’re forged into a unit, in that we know what everyone’s thinking and we understand everyone’s expectations.”
At launch they still didn’t have all their tools working, they only had their tools working enough.
DAI became the best-selling DA game, beating EA’s sales expectations in just a few weeks. If you look closely you can see the lingering remnants of its chaotic development, like the “garbage quests” in the Hinterlands. Some players didn’t realize they could leave the area and others got caught in a “weird, compulsive gratification loop”. Internet commentators rushed to blame “those damn lazy devs” but really, these were the natural consequences of DAI’s struggles. Maybe things would have been different if they’d miraculously received another year of dev time, or if they’d had years before starting development to build FB’s tools first.
“The challenge of the Hinterlands and what it represented to the opening 10 hours of DAI is exactly the struggle of learning to build open-world gameplay and mechanisms when you are a linear narrative story studio,” said Aaryn Flynn.
“DA2 was the product of a remarkable time-line challenge,” said Mike Laidlaw, “DAI was the product of a remarkable technical challenge. But it had enough time to cook, and as a result it was a much better game.”

On a scale of 1-10, how difficult is it to make a podcast? I’ve been following ANA since you first announced it (I’m so excited for it) and the other day I came up with an idea that I think would make a good series
Hey, thanks for the message! And thanks for being interested. Absolutely No Adventures has been a lot of fun to put together and it's nice to see that people are looking forward to it.
As for your question I'd say maybe a 6? But that's a really incomplete answer and I did a lot of searching for help on how to get started when I decided to do this so I'll give you  more in depth breakdown of the steps and if you have more questions you can totally message me off of anon.
(1) Write The Thing
So yeah, no getting around it. The first thing you have to do is just write the podcast. For some people, this is the hardest part. For me, it was probably the easiest part because it's the thing I was most familiar with. You already have an idea, which is great. So now you probably want to sit down and figure out things like is this a limited miniseries or will it be on-going with multiple seasons? How long will each episode be?
You also want to make sure you write for the medium. For example, in a book, you can just say, "She hugged him." But if it's audio, you have to make there's some kind of indication for that (ie: Man: Oh, and now we're hugging).
Format doesn't matter too too much as long as it's consistent. I used film script format in Celtx (which is free) but people also use Google Docs. Just pick what's easiest for you and get going.
I also highly recommend you finish a full season of scripts (or the whole set if it's a mini series) before you move on. Some people write as they go and if you want to do that, cool, but it's one less thing to worry about once you're in production and you don't want writer's block to slow you down once you're already going.
(2) Casting
So this is where I left my comfort zone and had to learn to do things I was unfamiliar with. The good news here is, there are a lot of actors available to be a part of projects like this for varying amounts of money or no money at all if it's an interesting enough project. I will advocate for paying people if you can though because I wanna make money off of my art someday so I think it's only fair to reciprocate. If it is unpaid, just be upfront about that. It's common among indie projects so it's not scandalous or anything.
Anyway, the basic process here is you write up a casting call that says what the project is, what the deadline is for auditioning, and has some audition lines for each characters (called sides). Then you post on Twitter which has a pretty active voice actor community plus some other places like reddit and certain FB groups and auditions will start rolling in. Casting calls tend to spread--people came to me from Discords I'd never heard of. Once you get a bunch you can pick who you like or, if you can't decide, invite back some people for callbacks and then pick.
I think 2 weeks is a good length of time to keep auditions open, longer if you're looking for something really specific.
It's also possible to simplify this step if you happen to know friends who have mics and wanna help or if you want to do a podcast with a very small cast--maybe even just one person who could be you. There are a number of podcasts with that format. I maybe should have mentioned this during writing but I'll mention it here instead. Anything you have to write, you will have to produce, so keep that in mind. Like, when you're writing, it's easy to have a bunch of extras and sound effects and crazy things happening, but remember that you have to bring that all to life later, so maybe a different character can give that exposition so you don't have to cast ANOTHER person as an extra.
(That being said, most actors I've worked with are chill with doing an extra voice or two.)
Oh! Also. Time zones are a thing. Keep that in mind. I do no regret casting an Australian, a Brit, and Americans across the country because they were all fantastic, but it was hell to schedule.
(3) Recording
So there are 3 main ways to record--in person in studio, remotely together, and remotely apart.
Option one is kind of a no-go right now because of Covid so let's talk about the other 2.
Remotely Together means you get all your actors on a Zoom call with you and they're all in their studios and you record as if you're all in the same room. I did this for ANA and I think it's the best way to do it cause people get to react to each other in real time which is great. The only thing is, it means you have to line up everyone's schedules which is a total bear. Still, if you can do it, worth it.
Remotely Apart means you give everyone their scripts and tell them to send in their lines in x weeks. I did this for some episodes of Secret Podcast Number 2 and it works fine. But for the more emotional eps, we still recorded together. This method is good because it gets rid of timing troubles which was necessary since we're doing a December release (which, trust me, is crazy quick for what we’re doing), but there are some things, you want people to be able to adjust their intensity levels for in the moment.
Either way, but especially in scenario 2, I'd suggest you do a table read first where everyone gets on call and reads through everything. It helps everyone get a feel for each other so they're not going in cold.
Wrt directing, it can feel a little weird to tell people how to talk or inflect or how much they should be crying, but, as long as you're polite, just go for it. They're actors. They can take the notes. That's what they do. All of my actors were always super great about it.
(4) Production
Alright so you have lines in from all your actors.
The next question is, how are you going to handle your production? The actual putting together of the lines and cleaning them up and balancing and adding effects and all that?
I specifically wrote ANA to have relatively simply sound design and it was *still* too much for me to handle so I opted to outsource for that and it was for sure where most of a budget went. If you happen to know how to do this or have the time to learn, you'll def save yourself some money. It is still very time consuming though. The one part that I did do--deciding which takes to use from the lines my actors sent (aka: picking takes) and putting them together to send to my sound guy--took super long as is.
If you're going to hire/recruit someone to do this stuff for you, I recommend you do it before you cast because they'll be able to let you know if the actors who want have compatible audio quality.
IDK what standard procedure is here but the way it works with my guy is I send him lines and then he puts stuff together and sends me a draft of the episode. Then I say what I want changed in an excel spreadsheet with time stamps and we go back and forth until it's done.
(5) Ancillary Stuff
Theme music! You probably want that! There are a couple of routes you can go here. You can get something from a music library--either totally free or for a relatively small fee. This is the most cost effective but will probably more generic and likely in use somewhere else if it's fully free.
You can write it yourself if that's a thing you're good at obviously. Or you can pay someone to do it which will probably cost you a couple hundred bucks but will be totally tailored and unique.
Cover Art! Also very important. People do judge things by their covers so I def rec getting a really dope one made. Canva is also your friend for like icons and stuff.
A Website! You'll want at least a basic one for like contact info, transcripts, stuff like that. I just use Carrd. You can get a pretty classic, website-like setup by using sections and you can link to a custom URL for only like 13 bucks a year which is great.
(6) Marketing
OK so, I'm gonna be real with you, this is the step I'm working on now so I'm still figuring it out!
Besides posting on social media and stuff, you also need to make a press kit which is basically a doc with all the info about you and the show. You can see mine on the ANA site.
I also have mood-board-y graphics I made on Canva to drop with each ep (or ahead of them. Haven’t quite decided).
I will say, I’ve made friends in the community and a lot of them have hyped up my stuff without me even asking. Which isn’t me saying, “Make friends for what they can do for you.” Gross. What I’m saying is that just participating in the community can help.
Anyway, this is getting way too long. I hope this was at least somewhat helpful. Like I said, if you (or anyone else) has more specific questions, hit me up!

Few weeks ago, when it was sunny every day and I was trying to get a tan, I decided to pick up a book that I bought about two years ago and from which I read about 4 pages last year. I was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
I bought it because I read the books while growing up, obviously liked it and grew to enjoy the whole universe even more when I lived in America due to constant movie reruns on TV and after visiting the Universal Studios.
No matter how many times I had watched the movies, there were still things I didn’t understand because when I read the books, I obviously read them in Czech because I was a child and didn’t know a single English word. So when I saw the book in a charity shop, I thought I might as well read it in English but then I never picked up because I’m too anxious to just read most of the time.
I recently came across a podcast, I really needed something to listen to and I needed it quickly because I wanted to distract myself from period pain. The podcast turned out to be a 24 year old guy reading the books for the first time and discussing it with his friends who are obsessed. There were so many things that I forgot happened because it has been almost 20 years since I first read the book (w o w  I’m old) and it made me miss the whole universe.
So I started reading it. I wanted more so I went on ebay and managed to buy the whole series that included some unique editions for 19 GBP. We watched the movie after. I read the second book pretty quickly. I read the Tales of Beedle the Bard and I even went through the Fantastic Beasts book.
I didn’t want to start reading the third one because it gets more serious. I love the universe. I love all the magic and spells and weird foods. That’s what I love the most.
My favourite part(s) in every book is when Harry sees something for the first time. First time he is in Diagon Ally, in the Burrow, Hogsmade. That’s what I’m here for and I wish these scenes were longer and better described in both the books and the movies. I want to know everythng about Harry’s two weeks of freedom that he spent in the Leaky Cauldron in the third book.
I have so many questions about everything, and I want to read all the theories and things that have been confirmed outside of the books but I don’t know where to start. It’s hard to get into a fandom midway through but even harder when it’s been going on for 20-30 years and there’s people that know everything about everything.
But also I don’t really want to be a part of a fandom because there’s always drama and I don’t want that.
Last night I did a bit of googling and landed on HP lexicon. So now I’m reading the essays and trying to understand galleons to pound conversion rate and what was there before the Hogwarts express?
Anyway, this is my escape world. It’s my childhood. Security. It’s what I’ve always wanted. A normal child finds out that they are more than that, that they are part of something else. And I never stopped hoping that maybe my letter got lost. And I can always feel the magic whenever I go to the next town to pop in the cathedral because it’s the Hogwarts corridors.
And yes, I know JKR is a horrible person and that the books are problematic. I know all that but that doesn’t mean I have to stop enjoying it. HP is an adult, it’s lived for decades and it doesn’t need her to be a crutch and to keep it alive. It lives on by itself, regardless of her actions.
Don’t buy the books new. There is plenty of them on ebay, fb market place or in charity shops. Who wants a new book anyway. Get one that has been well loved and love it more.
The universe is a security blanket and you can enjoy it without giving that woman a single penny, especially online.
Anyway, this got super long but I just wanted to say this because I’ve been feeling a bit poop because I have to start working in less than a week again, after almost 3 months of doing nothing so yeah.
Tumblr media
Hogwarts at Christmas is what I want the most.
Anyway, you can point me to your favourite HP theory places and places that fill out plot holes like can they buy more in during the school year, what if they fun out. Do they pay scholarship who pays for all the meals shouldn’t the Weasleys save lots of money during the school year if they dont have to feed all their kids how do the twins have money to buy all the pranks stuff if the family has no money okay i’ll see myself out

Elvis, Storage Wars and Pandemics - An Update from Las Vegas
Tumblr media
Things are good here.  We pay a little extra for a bigger ex-house trailer lot with room to park the van.  We've got a little shade, too.
Tumblr media
We watched the weather impatiently and finally arrived at King's Row in early October.  The plan WAS to head north in the spring.  We were going to a buffet once or twice a week and enjoying the huge selection of fast food restaurants (compared to Las Vegas, NM).  Our favorite buffets are at Sam's Town and the Orleans casinos, where we gamble $5 each and get free lunch buffets.  It didn't take long to find the Pink Box donuts, but they are across town and a little pricey.  We got Cox cable set up at our lot, which we sooo much appreciated during the Wuhan virus months.  While in NM I had gotten hooked on dumpster-diving and storage auction videos on YouTube.  I found out dumpster-diving is illegal in Las Vegas, so we started going to storage auctions.  My best finds were three 925 silver rings, each in a different unit.  And the cash.  I found a $20 bill in a BDU top and tons of spare change.  A neighbor who was moving gave us a 10x10 canopy for shade while sorting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You get tons of household stuff for just a few bucks.  We can't handle mattresses and big furniture with just the little Jeep.  Although the bulk of stuff goes to GoodWill,  I have made over a thousand dollars on eBay and FB Marketplace.  One week I went to the post office four out of five days.  Some Mondays I go twice a day.  We've sold TVs, game systems, games, a Kindle Oasis, a webcam, sets of high-end clothes and Nike/Jordans, Navy BDUs and uniforms, sets of books, lots of bikes, cell phones, IKEA end tables and lots of misc.  At one unit I paid $35 and another bidder immediately bought two folding tables for $40.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some of the more odd finds were a Nissan Leaf charger, some HVAC baffles, digital surveying tools, a 4' long aquarium, a digital darkroom timer, a 1972 signed Munich Olympics print (I still haven't sold this), 7 sets of barn door hardware, horse tack, meth,  morphine, narcan, Rx pills (some the same that we take), tons of driver's licenses, Clark County jail IDs and some giant grow lights.  We bought about 25 units until the Pandemic shut them down.  They ranged in price from $5 to $85.  I plan to continue when we settle down in Florida, where we'll have at least three good flea markets where we can sell stuff (last I checked).  Then whatever is left will go to GoodWill.  We were thinking about getting a cargo trailer here, but the BMV is closed and they won't even answer eMails about out-of-staters getting tags for trailers.

I finally gave up my flip phone for a "Smart" phone.  I use it for as little as possible to avoid swearing like a drunk sailor.
Corny went to four Penn & Teller "Fool Us" tapings at the Rio casino.  They will start to air on June 22.
Our Wuhan Virus Experience:
January 25th we went to the Ethel M chocolate factory in Henderson to redeem a "Tasting" groupon.  We pulled into the lot and there was a tour bus parked out front.  Chinese people, most of them wearing masks, were coming and going.  We were aware of the virus at that time and that it was spreading from China.  One of the masked women asked me to take her picture in the cactus garden - I made a rude face and waved her away.  I wasn't going to touch her germy phone.
I signed up at Planet Fitness February 25.  They closed a couple weeks later.
March 9th we went to the last storage auction before the Stay-at-Home season.
We started loading up on TP and food before it was popular.  Before masks, every time I went to Wally's I loaded up on this n' that.  When the shelves started going bare (around March 15th here), we were all set.  I had three boxes of gloves, two from storage units, and a total of seven N-95 masks.  The first Clark County Wuhan virus death was on March 16th.  I found out why our Wal-Mart is so crazy busy all the time.  While I was sitting in the Jeep waiting for Corny to buy and install a new battery, I watched a continuous parade of bus people filing back and forth from the store to the bus stop.  We started going to a less germy Wally's a bit farther from home.
Corny got a second Shingles vaccine at Sam's Club.  I was off wandering around shopping.  Later when he wasn't feeling well I asked him what his temperature had been at Sam's.  They hadn't taken it!  I couldn't believe it.  It's kinda standard you make sure someone isn't sick before you innoculate them!
We each got our $1200 Wuhan checks on the first round.  I donated mine to Chase Bank.  Corny donated his to CitiBank.
There were no casinos, buffets or auctions during "quarantine".  Other than a little boredom, basically we just took our laziness to a higher level.  We were used to laziness.  I feel for the people with kids - and the poor kids.  Geocaching Headquarters cancelled all events and the big August Geo-gatherings in Seattle and British Columbia.  Corny was sad because he couldn't take the van to see State Parks, museums and such.  He finally made it out west and everything was closed!  He wants to stay here through the summer and take van trips to cooler places, instead of moving the bigass RV up north.  I would like to head home to Florida in the fall and see about buying some land and settling down.  Corny will have to use the van for extended trips out west.
Corny took the top of the engine off the Jeep to change the spark plugs.  Turns out one of the cylinder heads may be bad.  If so, it is a $4000 fix.  Or not fix.  We've gotten used to the check engine light.
Geocaching-wise, we've been to several local events.  At one we donated about a dozen ready-to-go spray painted/repurposed Sam's Club-sized M&M/cashew containers.  I've taken several big solo Jeep trips to complete the NV Delorme challenge.  I found a nice Challenge Row just north of St. George, UT.  All six of us took a nice little van trip on Route 66 (first picture, above) from Kingman, AZ to Seligman to use up the old gas in the tank.  After spending 1/2 hour wiping down everything in a few germy hotel rooms, I started sleeping in the Jeep every other night.  I have a pizza-shaped pool float that fits perfectly.  I was almost done planning a big UT van trip when the auctions started back up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now when I go on a trip, I have to end 60-70 eBay listings.  If I were willing to pay eBay about $5/month I could do it with one click, but I feel like I give eBay/PayPal way more than enough money already.  Certainly more than they deserve.  They charge auctioneer prices because they can, but in reality all they are is a listing service like Craig's List, FB MarketPlace and Offer Up, which are all free.  We do all the hard work.  FeeBay just sits ontheirass and sucks money.  Do I sound cynical?
I've saved geocaching for last because I've got lots of pix.  Here ya' go.

day 1. “never stick too close to your dreams”
I feel amazing. top of the world.
I've got that "new start" feeling you get when you go on the first date with a girl that you'll likely think of for the rest of your life.
I am sweaty, I am smiley, I am stoked.
All I've ever wanted since breaking up my high school band in 2009 when we all moved away, was to get sweaty and excited and sound good playing loud. I've stuggled. I had a project in uni that was a lot of fun but only played a handful of gigs (though we did record a release I am very proud of). After that I spent years holding back my dreams while playing accordion in a bluegrass band. A few years ago I started getting the desire to get loud again and about a month in to me putting serious thoughts to writing punk songs, they kicked me out. Great timing really.
I worked a summer for my father at the Star Track courier company, driving around cranking bands like Foley and Camp Cope on the stereo and writing songs in my phone down the highway as i delivered 4wd light bars to rural farms. I moved down to melbourne with big dreams of finding great musicians to start a band with, and two years later now and that dream was never realised.
I met a double bass player who played for a friends band and had him record on a couple of my EPs, and I continued gigging with my fiddle player hannah. After taking my friends band "this is a robbery" on tour, I began jamming with his rythym section, two brothers from Taroona in Hobart. It sounded good, so I moved down to hobart. It wasn't my dream of being a band in melb, but it was only a one a bit hour flight from being that dream.
We tried to jam every week but only jammed about once a month. It was okay, but it wasn't great. The rehearsals were often marred by hangovers or the bass players dog running off in to the bush and the search for it taking up all our rehearsal space time. We learnt a small handful of songs and played a few shows that were always energetic and amazing, but never tight and impressive.  I constantly made plans in my note book along the lines of "we'll rehearse all through january and I'll book studio time for march" that would then be overwritten with "we'll rehearse all through july and record in august" and after two years of that and the drummer joining a band that more suited his style, I gave up propositioning them for rehearsals.  that brings us to now. I got back from Hobart a week ago and brought my hobart friend Ella up with me to cruise around Melbourne going on dates and seeing a perth friend of ours who was here. On the last day of Ella's week up here I took her to do my favourite thing- aimlessly walk through suburbs noticing things about the space and once your legs give up, jump on public transport back home. We walked from footscray to williamstown and were having a blast, in the highest of spirits after putting up a fake "toilet" sign on a wooden door we found near the peir that was definitely not a toilet. the perfect prank.
We were sat down at a swanky joint on the coast, having just ordered expensive pizza and cocktails having thought we were getting a good deal seeing the happy hour sign that was left out even though it was not a weekday (and hence not a happy hour). I checked my phone and was excited to see that some people I half-know had tagged drummers that they half-knew on the FB post I had made earlier in the day that read "Melb drummers, get at me". Really it was half meant in jest, as every one knows that its impossible to find a drummer in melbourne who isnt already in eleven other better bands. I'd made this post many times before and always found diddly squat luck. I didn't expect to this time and the first comment I got was "this is a tough one hey, best of luck". I and the two other people who liked that comment knew it to be true and couldnt agree more.
Little did I know I would find some success. SIx years ago I was in Lismore, studying music at lismore southern cross university and dating a girl who I was utterly infatuated with. We'd go to every little community event, market, gig or talk we could and found ourselves at the unibar gig of a brisbane band called The Clues. We were the only people there who stood near the stage, enjoyed it and had a boogie. After a brief chat with the memebers we said seeya. I went to a another gig of theirs a few weeks later in Byron bay and drunkenly talked further with them. Lovely guys. Cool band. they broke up not too long afterwards, but I drunkenly added on FB the guitarist who I found particularly pleasant to talk to.
Not having spoken to the guitarist since really, he commented on my post, tagging his Brisbane mate who moved to melb a few years ago. I just so happened to have met this mate of his at a Purplene reunion show a couple years back when I first arrived in Melbourne and went to the show alone. He and I drunkenly sang words towards each others faces and bonded over how wonderful it was that Purplene broke their 20 year hiatus to return for a one-off show at the old bar. We added each other on facebook, briefly noted that we shared a mutual friend in the clues guitarist and left it at that.  The drummer tagged, Ty, hit me up to send him some demos and I did. it was an ever such succinct chat.
-hey dude, chuck me your tunes.
then
-they sound good dude, wanna come round tomorrow night to try them.
then
-sweet as, heres my address, see you at six thirty.
I read these messages while eating the tastiest vegetarian (half side cheese) pizza and downing a marzapan flavoured cocktail called the GodFather. I was pretty excited about this and remained excited for the next 24hrs. The day passed both quick and slow and I drove myself in the rain with my useless old wiper blades from footscray to Brunswick east. I arrived half an hour early and was busting to piss. I wandered around in the rain looking for an alleyway to use, got quite wet, found a spot and was glad to have had a way to pass the half hour that wasn't just sitting in the car excitedly nervous.
I knocked on the door, met Ty's lovely partner Jazzy and the small old blind dog. The rehearsal room was warm and I was offered a list of drinks "would you like a beer? a wine? a tea? a coffee? we've got juice, you could have a cordial" and I said I'd love a beer. I was then given a list of all the different beers they had and told I could ask for whatever I wanted. I wasn't sure what to say and I said I was happy with anything. Jazzy came out holding an armful of different beers against her and I was delighted to see a stubbie of Tooheys Old. I delightfully picked that one and both Jazzy and Ty agreed that it was a very good choice.
We got straight to rehearsing and it was the most instantanous and impressive song learning I had ever been a part of. Really wonderful accents and fills in all the right places. I had a really good time and we worked through all of two new songs that I have written. I'm commented on how easy and profficient the songs were coming along and Ty replied "yeah, I'm old hat at doing this". I sweated through my shirt, bopping on my toes as i lost my voice and gave Ty the eyes whenever the tricky to remember little-fill was about to come up.  We worked through the outro of the last song and then went out the back for Ty to have a smoke. We talked about Steven the Magpie that he raised from baby and now lives in the park next door and comes over each morning at ty's whistle. We talked about possums and how the cats and dogs he owned were too old to have any luck hunting them. He showed me the massive old rear-projection TV in the back garage that he found on curbside, and then we scheduled another rehearsal for next week and I set off home, listening to the recordings we had made on my phone.
I told Ty that I was keen to record these songs as soon as we got them tight and he is keen as well. About a month ago at a Hard Aches show, Ben David said he was interested in hearing my new songs and would be interested in helping me get them recorded. Awfully kind of him and I hope to take him up on that offer in the future. He's quite a busy person though and I am very impatient with my need to get these new songs out, so I will be looking into all posibilities of studios to get these songs recorded. I'm excited to begin rehearsing with my double-bass player Matt and have the full band release I've always dreamt about. Just gotta keep at the songwriting slog hoping good ones happen, and continue rehearsing with Hannah, Matt and Ty.
I'm going to try to keep a journal here of the progress. I may also make it a zine. "Handwritten" is a possible name for the band, due to my affinity for handwritten journal keeping, letter writing and list making. I wanted this here post to be hand written and scanned, but i have other things to do tonight and was worried I wouldn't get this all out in time before if escaped my memory like everything does so quickly these days.
This will be an interesting trip, as i think the musicians journey is often kept secret to create hype and suspense and make it look effortless. Its not effortless and it takes up so much of me trying to make this happen. Join me to see whether we find any success this time or I fail gloriously in public view of this blogs readers.

Pt2
I slept terrible. I had dreams my teeth fell out. They were decayed, breaking, bloody, worn to almost nothing. Then there where awful boils on my face. And finally spiders pounds and pounds of spiders. He was there in all three dreams.
I wasn’t sleeping well. I kept waking up. He also was awake sometimes. Sometimes he was staring at me. He left the bedroom at one point. Went into the living room and was in his phone. And when he came back I woke up to him inches from my face he was standing. Staring right at me. I don’t remember what he said. I think it was something about wanting to know if I was sleeping.
I got up early and went to the store. I made us omelettes when I got back. I tried to give it to him in bed but he said no he’d come out there. Normally he sleeps in until 1 or 2. We spend our mornings intertwined. Usually ending in sex. But instead he was up. And was ready to leave the house at 11. He offered to drive. Meaning he had the power when we left. But when we got to his car it had been broken into. Both his film cameras were gone. He stayed composed tho. After we dealt with the police forms we went to a beach an hour away. We didn’t have a plan. We didn’t pack food or drinks or anything. It was hot. And not fun. He didn’t hold my hand. He kissed me twice. And we only stayed two hours max. When we headed back into town we decided to go to the place we had our first date for dinner. We got lost. When we got there he brought up how we could get dinner and maybe a drink and then go back to my place and finish watching the mighty ducks. I said that all sounded great. I meant it. And said how I liked how this felt like a full circle. It was nice coming back here. We checked out an art studio. And went to dinner. When we sat down I told him I was excited to kick his butt in pool. Then he said he didn’t wanna do that anymore. If he drank he’d have to wait 45minutes to drive back and then the movie would be at least an hour and then the drive home would be long. By the end of dinner he said he didn’t wanna watch the movie. We ended up having to go to apple to pick up my computer. And eventually we arrived at my house. He pulled up and then decided he would stay to finish the movie. We went in and he checked fb market place and there was one of his cameras. So we did the whole police thing again. Figured out what he needed to do. And then we watched the movie. When it was over he got his stuff and left. I told him to let me know if I could help with the camera stuff and that I hope it worked out ok and he asked me why. I stumbled and said because I felt bad and was sorry it happened while he was at my place. He left. With just two passionless kisses. He texted when he got home. I’m just gonna attach the texts so I don’t have a to type anymore. I ended up apologizing tho because this entire two days has just been fucking weird. He didn’t respond. I don’t know how to feel or what to do.
I feel used I think. I feel detached. Like the idea that he could be my friend is now lost. I feel alone. I feel overwhelmed.

As admin of this blog we’ve talked and need to address the current elephant in the room.
Everyone must already know what we’re talking about and they sent a lot of messages asking our opinion and our personal view on the matter. Everyone wants to know if we are friends or foes to their personal opinion during this madness rampage (we can all agree this is madness from one point or another), and we’ve decided to tell everyone we don’t have a personal or public say on the entire trademark vrs recast debate.
We know you guys want to hear from us it’s wrong, or some that it’s right, or some that we don’t care. And it’s not just that simple. We are pro recasts because we’re against hate, Admin O and me, we agree that we cared for recast owners being trashed unfairly and will defend them and give them a friendly place or help them out when possible. We deal with people, not with legal situations. We don't know about legal situations, we’re not experts, and don’t know how this will end or how will play out.
We do have personal opinions of course, but we agree our personal opinion is that we don’t know much about laws and don’t want to (because it’s not our place and have no interest on it). What we do or don’t it’s completely irrelevant to the outcome. If we hate recast or sellers, or if we love them unconditionally, that will not affect (let’s say, because I have no idea) the outcome of a trial for the trademarks. We are not among the jury or among any party involved. All we know is that even if (let’s suppose) Luo shuts down his business there will be a list of other people in china willing to fill the demand for recasts. Because there will be always a demand for recasts or reproductions of every other product and the only undeniable truth is that you can’t do anything about it either you like it or not.
So we will answer to our best knowledge some (just a couple) of confessions sent to us in the last day or so because we see there is a real worry from one side or another (some of this confessions might be anti recast but don’t contain insults).
Admin C + Admin O.
Tumblr media
Sorry anon, we have no idea and personally think no one really does. Many use questionable proof or questionable insight knowledge to tip the balance to their side, but this is a situation that exceeds our comprehension and therefore we’re responsible to not giving an answer because anything we say will upset one side or the other and our place here it’s to avoid such confrontations to comfort recast owners when they’re treated unfairly by anti recast (or pro artist) community members. Many other blogs will give you a detailed list of their side. Have in consideration the interpretation of facts might be completely different depending on who you talk to, so basically, it’s all too messy and no one knows even if they claim to do so.
Admin C.
Tumblr media
The doll market will not collapse anytime soon. Please let’s don’t panic. I can’t count how many times people in the community have told me the market will collapse and bjds will disappear permanently. Every now and then people get scare about a new event and start blaming each other and at the same time having this irrational fear of dolls disappearing or artist become extinct. The business of bjds (not even going as far as to talk about dolls in general) has existed since 1936 ? (starting in germany if I don’t miss recall with the Hans Bellmer dolls, correct me if I’m wrong), and expanded to asia in the late 90’s (volks 1999), and it’s 2018 and bjds are still a thing. There is no reason to think they’ll disappear. People loves dolls since time immemorial, people have artistic skills since the dawn of humanity. Things might change a bit over time but as long as humans exist, they will not collapse or disappear. So please try to remain calm and coherent about it.
Admin C.
Tumblr media
We understand that social media can become overwhelming about some news, but I can’t personally tell if you’re more worried about the amount of notifications or the problem itself. Might recommend you to maybe stop checking for a few days or turning off notifications might work. Dolls will be here after all this is over so you won’t miss a thing and can skip right to the end.
Tumblr media
Leaving aside its obvious how you stand in this debate, like I’ve said before, we don’t have a particular opinion about the subject because all information available it’s tainted by what side it’s telling the story. This is the DoA list of companies manufacturing inside chinese territory: Resinsoul, Dollzone, + (follow link). But not all this companies are based on china (many just sell to china but are not from china), and many others, the ones who are, as scummy as you think Luo is by doing this, if he was able to start the trademark process for their sculpts it’s because they haven’t done beforehand, and “scummynes” aside, they should have done it to be protected from a risk that was real. Recast aren’t a news for anyone, so why if you have a company and think you’re at risk, will not cover all your legals just to be safe? And no, I’m not blaming the company, I’m only reinforcing the idea that this situation it’s a product of actions on one side just as the other. If what Luo did was scummy, he was only able to do so because on the other side you have a company that didn’t protect their intellectual property properly for some reason, and that’s bad business. Many legit companies closed a long time before recast became popular or we even knew they existed outside china. Bad business practices happen all the time, including bjd companies. So if the two parts are to blame, then there is no way we can take a side.
There is no possible way we can tell “who's fault is it” that we come to this point, and that’s why there are legal systems that will have the job to decide the outcome. What I do know is that recast owners can’t be blamed unless you can analyze each owner personal situation or how the recast came to them and if they deliberately went looking a recast just to give their money to Luo (or any other seller), and if this is the case, then people might just sent them money for free (if they’re evil and don’t care about the dolls they get but only about giving free money to unknown chinese people).
This debate (recasts) hasn’t being analyzed over and over yet again because it’s easy to come up to a conclusion. It’s anything but easy to tell who’s to blame (if there’s anyone at all). This blogs it’s a safe place for recast owners as we acknowledge them as humans and we empathize with their situation and how others might pick on them just for their dolls regardless of how good or bad the person might be (on a personal level, having a recast doesn’t makes you a bad person or makes you a human being with questionable morals, you need to analyze each situation properly and personally, and that’s simply impossible. Some might get a recast from a loved one or a family member who doesn’t knows the difference, some because the company it’s no longer producing that sculpt or it’s closed, and in the two last cases the only market affected it’s the resale MP, not the company nor the original artist since they no longer get any money from that sculpt. And I understand people selling their legit for twice the price might get upset because they aren’t having as many sales, but the artist and companies are not being harmed, and the second hand seller will eventually find a buyer sooner or later if their price it’s actually fair for the product they’re offering). So no, I can’t agree nor disagree with anyone taking sides. It’s not my place to do so, we’re here for a different reason. This blog exists because we value the people regardless of their dolls and their origin, price or material.
We will not longer be given any further statements about this, it’s already crazy in other blogs, insta, fb, and social media, so if you want to discuss this and jump into the endless drama please do it outside this blog. Thank you for understanding.

How to Buy Cryptocurrency for Beginners (Ultimate Step-by-Step Guide) Pt 1
Tumblr media
Whats up guys! I am crypto Casey and i’m a crypto currency educated. In these days i will show you easy methods to get began in investing in digital assets like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin safely and securely step-with the aid of-step. I will make this as convenient as viable for you guys, but before we get began I wish to share with you two foremost matters you have got to recognize before reworking some of your wealth into digital assets. Number one: these varieties of investments will not be like some thing else you may be acquainted with. Not like banks, credit score unions, and traditional inventory exchanges there are very nearly no fail safes in position to protect you if you make a mistake or when you do not realize what you are doing. There isn’t any hotline you could name when you get stuck; there’s no corporate headquarters that you may attain out to in the event you lose your cash; there are no FDIC insured banks in the back of these investments; and this all approach at any time you might lose all of your investments from hackers or consumer error with no recourse in any respect. Cryptocurrency is leading edge technology; it’s the modern-day-day Wild Wild West.So it requires a while and centered power to wrap your head around. Luckily for you, I’ve accomplished quite a few the legwork to collect this step-via-step advisor to make certain you acquire the competencies and working out you have got to be triumphant in cryptocurrency investments. The 2nd factor you must understand before going any extra is the golden rule of investing: by no means make investments more than which you can afford to lose. Excessive risk can result in high reward, and we humans have a average tendency to need to overreach, but you have to determine an quantity you’re comfortable with investing and, extra importantly, an quantity which you can truly manage to pay for to speculate. Then you need to stick with that amount and be sufferer within the approach. Cryptocurrency is a lot more volatile and unpredictable than the stock market. Not like the nine-to-five in new york inventory exchange, cryptocurrency is traded around the world 24/7. So if you want to get a excellent night time’s sleep as a crypto investor, you need to funds the sum of money you are going to speculate and stick with it. I’ve damaged down this method into 10 easy steps. So let’s get started. Step 1: this will likely come as a shock to you due to the fact crypto stuff is beautiful excessive-tech, but the first thing you have to do is get yourself some paper notebooks. Yes, I have an understanding of some of you will have not ever used such old recording procedures like a pen and paper before, however severely buy a couple notebooks from Amazon. I in my opinion love to make use of these moleskin notebooks from Amazon with grid paper. I am a significant fan of grid paper given that it helps arrange knowledge in a way that is easy to learn. You need at the least two notebooks, however I endorse three. Step quantity 2: use your paper notebooks to retailer all your passwords, login credentials, and any other sensitive knowledge regarding your crypto wallets, exchanges, and different money owed i will stroll you through developing afterward in this video. Certainly not store your passwords or login data online with a password supervisor, to your cellphone, or any gadget related to the web. You ought to go ancient common and store your entire essentials on the paper notebook with paper pocket book backups. That is why I suggest shopping at least two paper notebooks. You must store all these notebooks in separate locations to be reliable. You certainly not comprehend if fireplace could get away or with all of these loopy hurricanes and flooding, your residence or your place of work could be affected and your paper pocket book would be destroyed. Recall storing your notebook in a riskless location at your house and storing the opposite one in a security deposit box at a financial institution.Remember there aren’t any pre-built fail safes in this technology and there are hackers far and wide looking to steal your money. It is up to you to take the imperative steps to defend your investments. Also, in the event you made up our minds to buy the moleskin pocket book I urged, take a second to fill in the "in case of loss please return to" part and more importantly, the "as a reward" line. Feel cautiously and bear in mind how so much would you pay to incentivize someone who discovered your notebook to come it safely where it belongs. Step number 3, let’s talk about passwords. Passwords involving the whole thing crypto must be very robust.I’ll share with you some suggestions with the intention to support you create robust passwords in the course of the account setup system. Hackers are usually not simply sitting on computers seeking to guess your password. They use programs that mechanically run by means of enormous databases of common passwords and random combinations of characters. So that you could combat this you ought to make very long passwords containing random phrases and letters, capitalization and exact characters. Do not use long-established phrases, noted film lines, or a Bible verse. And by no means use the identical password for a couple of account. We will be setting up quite a lot of unique debts later on on this video, so be all set to create a few lengthy, strong passwords throughout the procedure. I don’t recommend ever storing passwords for crypto bills on a password manager. Cloud-based password managers like LastPass and OnePassword are liable to remote attacks. Even though those debts are encrypted, if your master password is hacked then you are wholly exposed. So do not rely on one single password to look after your investments. Additionally not ever retailer passwords to your browser since these are inclined as well. That’s why I recommend only storing passwords on your paper notebooks. Next, if any accounts require protection questions, deal with the solutions like your passwords: create fake, long complicated solutions.Persons can simply find out what your mom’s maiden title was once and where you went to excessive tuition on matters like fb. So preserve that in intellect. Also, similar to your passwords, retailer the fake answers to protection questions on your paper pocket book. Step number four: you need to ensure that your computer is relaxed and freed from any malware earlier than you begin setting up any of the debts and wallets i’ll stroll you by means of later on this video. There are ton of free tools and services available to scan and secure your laptop. In this video i’m going to stroll you by way of the scanning, cleansing, and securing process utilising Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes is a high-great cybersecurity solution so as to help you look after your laptop from hackers. First, for those who don’t already require a strong password to access your pc. So go forward and make your first entry into your paper pocket book: your company-new tremendous powerful pc password. Next, let’s do a full and whole malware scan of your pc utilising Malwarebytes.Open your internet browser and go to Malwarebytes.Com. Scroll right down to all merchandise and beneath the "For house" part, pick Malwarebytes for Mac or laptop. In this video demonstration, we will set up for Mac. Click on "be taught more" and then click on "Free download." Retrieve the downloaded file and open it to start the set up system. Click on by means of the set up wizard until the set up is entire and then click on "close." subsequent, open Malwarebytes to your pc and click on "Scan Now." if you’re easy, congratulations! You probably have some chance files, Malwarebytes will quarantine them. Go to the quarantine part and click on "exhibit Quarantine" to view the records that have been quarantined. Then click the "Clear Quarantine" button to completely delete the entire risk documents. Eventually, you have got to at ease your freshly-cleaned laptop. I in my view recommend making use of the paid variation of Malwarebytes but there are different pc safety vendors like trend Micro or equivalent which are just as exceptional. Make sure you decide on a authentic protection method to guard your pc. When you’ve got a pc rather of a Mac and you wish to have to go one step additional to take your safety to the max, I propose downloading and putting in a key scrambler.Key scramblers are a excellent device that preclude hidden keystroke logging malware from recording your passwords to hack into your money owed by encrypting the whole thing you style in real-time. I advise making an attempt KeyScrambler via QFX, but once more, there are other key scrambling instruments in the market which you could check out as well. Or you probably have an onscreen keyboard for your pc, which you could go with to simply form on your passwords utilizing the on-display keyboard. This additionally prevents keystroke loggers from recording your passwords. Step number 5: you will now not be having access to crypto related money owed for your laptop by myself. Smartphones play a giant position in safety and entry as well. So you must take steps to relaxed your telephone. First, if you shouldn’t have one already, require a password to free up your cellphone. That way if it can be ever lost or stolen, there is a barrier between a competencies hacker and your investments. Make sure you log the password on your pocket book for safekeeping. Next, you ought to eliminate your cellphone number from any public internet site in social media and try to certainly not publish your cellphone mobile or phone mobilephone supplier publicly or to folks you don’t know or believe.I do know this is very tricky to do in our social media-driven world, but this is an vital step you ought to take to ensure the security of your investments. Mobile numbers are used to entry a myriad of touchy information together with banking crypto and two-element authentication purposes we will be setting up later on on this video. Using your mobile telephone provider and phone cell quantity, there are hackers out there who habits something referred to as "sim theft." this is where hackers steal your mobilephone’s identity via calling your mobile mobilephone provider and asking for a brand new SIM card. If they steal your phone mobilephone SIM card, they may be able to conveniently hack into your funding accounts and drain your dollars. So the subsequent factor you have got to do to preclude this from going down is hooked up a passphrase along with your mobilephone mobilephone provider that ought to be disclosed earlier than activating a brand new SIM card.So get on the cellphone with T-cell, Verizon, or whoever your phone cell provider is and installed a powerful passphrase that have to be disclosed before activating a brand new SIM card in your account. Step quantity 6: it is time to create a company new detailed e-mail tackle making use of a handle you may have under no circumstances used earlier than anyplace else. This includes your identify, nicknames, or user names you have used for money owed anyplace else on-line or offline prior to now. This new electronic mail deal with should be used completely for crypto investments simplest. Don’t use an email tackle you use already and that individuals know about to open up crypto accounts. You want some thing absolutely random to use for the handle for your new e mail account, and do not use the brand new email deal with for shopping or signing up for newsletters. Only use your new email just for crypto and do not inform anybody you don’t know or believe about it. I recommend setting up your new e mail account utilising ProtonMail or yet another an identical e-mail provider that prioritizes safety and privateness. I will exhibit you the right way to set up a company new electronic mail account utilizing ProtonMail. Go to ProtonMail.Com and click on "sign Up." select the free plan and click on, "decide upon Free Plan." next, opt for your certain username you have got by no means used at any place else before.Next, generate an awfully strong password. Register a restoration e-mail. Make sure the email address you utilize as a healing has a strong password then click "Create Account." verify that you are human, then click on, "whole Setup" and decide upon, "finish." Step number 7: making use of your newly secured cellphone mobilephone, we at the moment are going to download some two-element authentication apps. Two-element authentication is a different layer of protection that is undoubtedly crucial to setup earlier than investing in crypto. This is how it works: when getting access to an account, after coming into your tremendous comfy password, you can be required to input a code that is generated for your two-factor authentication mobile app. These codes continuously exchange each twenty to thirty seconds, so nobody might be capable to entry your money owed except they have your telephone mobile at that specified second in time. There are two distinct authentication apps we will be able to be downloading: Google Authenticator and Authy. Some folks decide upon one over the opposite and a few individuals use both. In this video, i’ll walk you via downloading and constructing each so which you could get a suppose for them. First, let’s down load Authy. Go to the App retailer in your cellphone and type in "Authy" and download the Authy app. When it can be finished downloading, enter your phone cellphone quantity and click "good enough." next, enter your email address you created utilizing ProtonMail and click on "subsequent." A window will pop up that claims "Get Account Verification by way of telephone call or SMS." Make a resolution and then enter the license plate in the space provided. Faucet the add (+) icon on the money owed menu. You’re going to be precipitated to create a backups password. Create a robust password, log it into your paper notebook, and enter it into the distance furnished.Click "allow backups" and verify your password by means of getting into it again. It can be important to established a backup to be certain that you can repair your money owed if you upgrade or lose your telephone. The next screen provides instructional materials on how you can mounted Authenticator debts. Once we begin establishing bills later on in this video, i will walk you via this system. On the primary reveal, tap on "Settings" and then opt for "protection Pin." faucet the "safeguard Pin" button and enter a pin. This may require a pin to be entered earlier than opening the appliance. Next, tap the "look after whole App" button and enter your PIN once more. Your display should now seem like this. Subsequent, faucet "Cancel" after which tap "instruments." turn the "enable Multi-device" setting to "Off." Now no person else can access your Authy account on another gadget except your exact telephone mobile. Now you are Authy app is secure. Next, let’s down load Google Authenticator. You are going to want a gmail account to entire this setup so in case you do not have already got one, create one with a precise manage you’ve got certainly not used earlier than and a strong password.Go to the app store to your mobile, variety in "Google Authenticator," and download the Google Authenticator app. As soon as it is finished downloading, open the app and select "begin Setup." you are going to see two options: "Scan Barcode" and "manual Entry." Go to your internet browser and open your Google account safety web page. Subsequent, scroll all the way down to the 2-step verification part and click on "Get started." Enter your gmail account password and then enter your cellphone phone quantity. Select to obtain a text or cell name to obtain a verification code. Enter the code you obtain in the space provided and click "subsequent." once the code is accepted, choose "turn on," then on the following page, scroll down and opt for "Setup Google Authenticator." select the style of telephone you may have and click "subsequent." Now return to your mobilephone telephone and choose "Scan Barcode." elevate your mobile to face the computer screen like this to scan the code.Once it is positive, your mobilephone will exhibit a six digit code that changes each twenty seconds or so, alongside along with your gmail tackle. Now go back to your computer and click "next." Enter the code currently displayed in your phone before the time expires and the code changes, and click "affirm." as soon as the code is confirmed, click "accomplished." in the event you’ve been using your gmail account for a long time you’re not certain if it’s routinely logging into old devices you don’t use anymore, scroll all the way down to the "devices you trust part" and pick "Revoke all." That method, it doesn’t matter what gadget you might be using to log into your Gmail, 2-step verification might be required. Now you have got two specific Authenticator apps. Most money owed work with the Authy app, nevertheless, some debts handiest work with Google Authenticator. When developing two-element authentication with accounts, you must choose one Authenticator over the opposite. You can’t established two-factor authentication for the same account using each Google and Authy. Select the one you want to use to set up two-factor authentication for the ProtonMail handle you created within the earlier step.Log again into your ProtonMail account. Subsequent, click on "Settings" and decide on the "protection" tab after which click "enable Two-component Authentication." that you would be able to learn their 2FA advisor, after which click on "subsequent." Enter your password, and then enter the two-factor passcode that’s displayed to your cell in authy or Google Authenticator. ProtonMail will also provide you with a couple of one-time use healing codes. Store these codes in your paper notebooks. If you happen to ever lose your cell and are unable to entry your Authenticator app, these codes would be the most effective way you could log again into your account.Which you can enter these codes instead of the six digit authentication code. Word that each code can simplest be used as soon as they usually have to be used in the listed order. So be definite to save all the codes. Now, two-factor authentication should be required when logging into your ProtonMail account. Step number 8. Now for the moment you could have all been waiting for, tips on how to hooked up a pockets. There are a number of one-of-a-kind types of wallets in the market and a few wallets handiest help designated crypto currencies.
Subsequent, click on "Settings" and decide on the "protection" tab after which click "enable Two-component Authentication." that you would be able to learn their 2FA advisor, after which click on "subsequent." Scan the QR code along with your two-aspect authentication gadget to established your account. Then, click "subsequent." Enter your password, and then enter the two-factor passcode that’s displayed to your cell in authy or Google Authenticator. Wallets are a large topic in crypto and warrent its own video altogether. So on this video i will stroll you via constructing a reliable, handy-to-use, and insured wallet making use of Coinbase. Coinbase has wallets that aid Bitcoin, (Bitcoin cash), Ethereum, and Litecoin. All digital foreign money that Coinbase holds online is absolutely insured. Which means that if Coinbase have been ever to undergo a breach of its online storage, the insurance policy would pay out to cover any consumer cash lost therefore. How I Sold $58,000 Last Year Selling just Gift Cards for the Day SpaPeople love shopping local. Even more so, people love buying gifts that are local. They want to treat their friends to amazing experiences at local businesses. With my day spa, I don’t sell anything online except for Gift Cards. I don’t try to compete with eCommerce stores. I simply focus on the one thing that no one else does in my market well. I focus on making it easy for my customers to buy gift cards.I had the joy on Mother’s Day to watch a family go into my competitor. They asked if they sold gift cards. The lady was like “No”.They came over to my spa and walked out with $300 in gift cards that they bought for their mother. Guess who got the new customer? Each year, I sell close to ~$23,000 of Gift Cards just Online. We sold another $25,000 in-store.https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/800/1*O5avpnrL4eQfF-zwuMEIBw.pnghttps://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/800/1*EMW9Tlvbzr-AwdDkhV7O_w.pngI’m going to break down for you, my exact strategy on how I am selling so many gift cards through my website and in-store.Stop Offering Just Plain Dollar AmountsIf someone is going through the trouble of buying a gift card from a local business — they don’t want to go the easy route and buy them just a gift card. They want to buy them something special. In fact, I have attached a log of all my recent Gift Card Purchases.https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/800/1*UWN1xB1rXL_yYtgdmVsQVQ.pngWhere you see “-”, the customer selected a dollar amount. In fact, 19 out of my last 26 purchases of gift cards have been for packages. People love treating someone to something unique. It’s a win-win for everyone. The person buying feels like they are treating someone to something special. When the recipient gets the gift card, they enjoy it a lot. They feel someone really put an effort into the purchase.Do you know what the cool part about selling an experience is?When that new customer comes with that gift card — they get a full experience from your place. If you give them an award winning experience, then they’ll love your place forever. For example, a Restaurant might want to do a “3 Course Meal for $49”. You can use Jon Taffer’s method of identifying that it’s a gift card. You put down a “blue napkin”. The whole staff know it’s a gift card. You go above and beyond to deliver an amazing experience. The food is delivered fast.Gary V & John Tapper Talking about RetentionAt the end of the meal, the manager comes over and makes sure everything went great & offers a special on their next visit with a coupon.Using Pricing AnchorsWhile most of the time, our customers want to buy packages as gift cards, some still want to buy just a dollar amount. We use two types of pages for our Gift Card Checkouts. The first is the specific package they want to buy. The second is a generic page that we can use to sell generic dollar amounts (in our case $75, $150, $300)The prices you pick influence the actual dollar amount the customer is going to buy. If you put prices up $5, $10, $15 — most customers won’t ask “Do you sell a $50 gift card?”Then again, if you sell every gift card from $5 to $500, in $5 increments, the customer is going to have a choice overload, and probably pick something towards the bottom.Pricing Experiments You Might Not Know, But Can Learn FromThere’s an excellent article on the effect of a pricing anchor. When we created our pricing choices for our gift card, we choose one really high card value & two that are closer to each other. The result is that the majority of our purchases are the middle pricing option.Make it Easy to Buy Gift CardsInclude a Link in Your HeaderCustomers are not going to search your entire site to see if you sell gift cards. They want to know right off the bat. Just like you might have links to jobs & careers, you should have a Gift Card link to at least one type of gift card right off the bat.Go Above & Beyond with Your LinksWhen you come to our site, you will notice every service menu item has a second link right after “Book Now”. The second link is “Buy as a Gift”.We make it super easy for the customer to select the package they want to treat someone to. Not only that, but they also are constantly reminder that we sell gift certificates.Test Your PlatformWhen picking a platform for your gift cards, it’s absolutely imperative that you test the purchasing path yourself. When we used our Appointment Reservation system to process our gift cards, we didn’t sell many gift cards. While their platform is amazing at managing reservations, it wasn’t designed for the details around selling Gift Cards. It’s a two page checkout though, that includes every possible option to purchase the gift card directly through their page. The complexity of it reduces the overall purchases.Last year, when we did our full website rebuild, we had a custom platform built and implemented into our system to create a super smooth & easy checkout system. Since then, we have sold an additional $15,000 in gift cards compared year over year.Make it Simple for Your Customer to BuyGift Card Season is 101 Days Away — Here’s Your Action Plan.In the first two weeks of May, I sold almost $4,000 in Gift Cards for Mother’s Day. mega followers for instagram Techniques And also Practices Every one of Places Need to Employ
With the previous many decades, Facebook has become conducting what quantities to an A/B examination on human Modern society, making use of two distinctive social websites apps. The main app in Facebook’s examination incorporates a maximalist layout: It lets customers to put up lengthy status updates, with back links to information article content, shots, movies and even more. The app is developed as an enormous megaphone, having an emphasis on public sharing and an algorithmic feed effective at sending posts rocketing around the world in seconds. The second application within the test is much more minimalist, created for intimate sharing in lieu of viral broadcasting. End users of this app, many of whom have non-public accounts with modest followings, can write-up images or movies, but external inbound links usually do not perform and there is no re-share button, which makes it more durable for end users to amplify each other’s posts. The results of the check are stark. The main application, Fb, become an enormous and unmanageable behemoth that swallowed the media market, was exploited by hostile overseas actors, empowered autocrats, developed the problems for a world pretend information epidemic and eventually became an enormous headache for its creators. The next application, Instagram, has fared far better. It hasn’t been overrun with bogus news, it hasn’t been exploited to precisely the same diploma, and many users appear to be pleased with it — Specially youthful users, who vastly desire it to Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg has pledged to invest 2018 cleaning up Fb, and ensuring that “our companies aren’t just exciting to implement, and also very good for men and women’s perfectly-remaining.” He’s also pledged to cope with the scourge of faux news on Facebook, and do a better occupation of retaining bad actors at bay. Good for him. But there might be a simpler deal with in this article. Why doesn’t he make his beleaguered blue app far more like Instagram, the Fb-owned app that isn’t destabilizing Modern society? Very last 7 days, Fb unveiled its most recent attempt to rein in its flagship products. In an effort to control Bogus information, it declared it would be letting Fb end users to rank information shops by trustworthiness, and consider These scores when selecting which news stories to Screen in consumers’ feeds. But this kind of insignificant algorithmic knob-fiddling is probably not enough. Instead, Facebook should think about using what it’s realized with Instagram, which it obtained in 2012, to embark with a gut renovation. If I had been Mr. Zuckerberg, here are some Instagram classes I’d be thinking of. Lesson No. 1: Emphasize visuals. De-emphasize textual content. Initially, and many certainly, Instagram is a visual medium. Pics and videos are the main event, and text, although current, is mostly confined to captions and feedback. Consequently, Instagram feels more intimate than Facebook, exactly where photos and videos usually sit alongside prolonged diatribes, cafe Test-ins and mundane position updates. Study has demonstrated that, sometimes, visual platforms could be fantastic for us. One particular analyze, released by scientists at the University of Oregon in 2016, found that using graphic-centered platforms like Instagram and Snapchat was related to decreased levels of loneliness among people, and higher levels of contentment and pleasure, although text-primarily based platforms had no correlation with enhanced mental overall health. A seriously Visible platform also can make a comparatively lousy conduit for breaking news As well as in-the-minute commentary, which might make clear why Instagram frequently feels less exhausting than other social networks. (Additionally, it describes why last month, before I went on holiday vacation, I deleted every single social websites app from my cell phone besides Instagram — the one application I dependable not to damage my beachside serene.) Lesson No. 2: Rethink the share button. Amongst Instagram’s most underrated virtues is always that it's got imposed structural limits on virality — the flexibility of a provided submit to distribute over and above its meant audience. Contrary to Twitter and Fb, on Instagram there isn't a native sharing perform, meaning that the arrive at of most Instagram posts is capped at the amount of people who Adhere to the person’s account. (There are methods to “regram” another person’s photo employing a third-celebration application, However they’re clunky, and comparatively handful of folks make use of them. Instagram also just lately began exhibiting people posts from people they don’t comply with, a Facebook-inspired change which i’d argue is usually a slip-up.) A local share button has been greatly useful for Facebook’s and Twitter’s expansion. It's got also authorized upstart media businesses like BuzzFeed and Upworthy to make tremendous audiences by specializing in very shareable stories. But simplicity of sharing has also allowed the loudest and most psychological voices to be rewarded with clicks — and a focus. It’s this incentive construction which has allowed partisans and profiteers to hijack Fb’s algorithms and spread divisive messages and Fake news to many people today. The straightforward virality of Fb also appears to have designed personal consumers more hesitant about opening up. That makes sense — it’s simpler to share a selfie if you understand it won’t accidentally come across its way to the feeds of one million strangers. Lesson No. three: Ban backlinks. Instagram’s best structural edge, however, may be a results of its choice to go mostly url-cost-free. Hyperlinks in Instagram captions and responses aren’t clickable, and while some customers have discovered workarounds, the overwhelming majority of Instagram posts aren’t intended to mail users to outside the house Web sites. (The exceptions are adverts, which can consist of clickable backlinks and are, not coincidentally, quite possibly the most troubled Section of Instagram’s System.) The walled-backyard character of Instagram has pissed off publishers, who want to deliver followers out for their Web sites, wherever the publishers can make promoting money and “Management the reader knowledge.” (It’s truly almost the money.) But Instagram has correctly refused to give in, Possibly noticing that permitting hyperlinks could possibly switch the platform into a screeching bazaar, with publishers and web pages all performing circus functions for clicks. Removing hyperlinks from Fb would wreak havoc about the digital media business, that has developed an economic product all around referral site visitors from Facebook. It will also danger alienating some users, who take pleasure in selling and talking about stories from other portions of the online world. But it could also fix a lot of the System’s most vexing worries. And in the long run, It might be much better for the whole world. After all, destructive actors don’t write-up fabricated news, wildly exaggerated headlines or partisan outrage-bait on Facebook only for enjoyment. They are Great post to read doing it, in several scenarios, mainly because it’s worthwhile. Consider absent poor actors’ incentives they usually’ll go in other places. Banning most inbound links doesn’t seem to have damage Instagram as a company. It had much more than 800 million monthly Energetic customers as of September, and it obtained one million new advertisers final yr. Facebook doesn’t crack out Instagram’s earnings, but some analysts hope the app could sooner or later produce approximately $10 billion in once-a-year income. That’s continue to nowhere in close proximity to Fb, which gained $10 billion in profits very last quarter by yourself, but it surely’s a meaningful selection, and it reveals that insularity isn’t constantly a bad thing. Lesson No. four: Lousy actors are unavoidable, but their affect is usually contained. Instagram is way from a perfect social network, and copying it wouldn’t correct all of Facebook’s complications overnight. Amid other concerns, some investigation has revealed that utilization of Instagram can breed insecurity and bullying, and exacerbate human body impression problems, Primarily amid younger women. Instagram also hosts its own sketchy microeconomy — just witness the scourge of Insta-famous people endorsing doubtful health merchandise, or the uptick in fly-by-evening consumer manufacturers that sector on their own employing Instagram ads. And Russian propagandists did use Instagram to test to influence American voters prior to the 2016 presidential election, with posts that attained as quite a few as twenty million users. (Far fewer than the estimated 126 million individuals who were reached by Russian posts on Fb, but a hefty amount Nevertheless.) But even these flaws are preferable to the structural troubles which have plagued Fb. Presented the choice concerning a version of Fb that manufactured some of its people feel hideous and unpopular, and one that could be accustomed to undermine democracies and encourage misinformation worldwide, I understand which a person I’d pick. Several billion Facebook users might agree.

Inside Amazon’s surveillance-powered no-checkout convenience store
By now many have heard of Amazon’s most audacious try to shake up the retail world, the cashless, cashierless Go retailer. Stroll in, seize what you need, and stroll out. I bought an opportunity to just do that lately, in addition to choose the mind of one in all its chief architects.
My intention getting in was to attempt to shoplift one thing and catch these complacent Amazon sorts napping. However it grew to become clear once I went in that this wasn’t going to be an possibility. I used to be by no means greater than a foot or two from an Amazon PR rep, and as Dilip Kumar, the tasks VP of Expertise, satisfied me, they’d already supplied towards such crude assaults on their system.
As you might need seen within the promo video, you enter the shop (heretofore accessible to Amazon staff solely) via a gate that opens while you scan a QR code generated by the Amazon Go app in your telephone. At this second (nicely, really the second you entered or maybe even earlier than) your account is related together with your bodily presence and cameras start monitoring your each transfer.
The various, many cameras.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
I puzzled when the concept of Amazon’s cashierless retailer was first proposed how it will be achieved. Cameras on the ceiling, behind the show instances, on pedestals? What variety? Proximity and weight sensors, face recognition? The place would this all be collated and processed?
Amazon’s strategy wasn’t as complicated as I anticipated, or fairly not in the best way I anticipated. Primarily the system is made up of dozens and dozens of digicam models mounted to the ceiling, overlaying and recovering each sq. inch of the shop from a number of angles. I’d guess there are possibly 100 or so within the retailer I visited, which was concerning the measurement of an atypical bodega or fuel station mart.
These are atypical RGB cameras, customized made with boards within the enclosure to do some fundamental grunt laptop imaginative and prescient work, presumably issues like movement detection, fundamental object identification, and so forth.
They’re augmented by separate depth-sensing cameras (utilizing a time-of-flight approach, or so I understood from Kumar) that mix into the background like the remainder, all matte black.
The photographs captured from these cameras are despatched to a central processing unit (for lack of a greater time period, not figuring out precisely what it’s), which does the true work of shortly and precisely figuring out totally different folks within the retailer and objects being picked up or held. Choosing one thing up provides it to your “digital purchasing cart,” and you may pop it in a tote or purchasing bag as quick as you want. No want to carry it up for the system to see.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
That is the place the key sauce is, Kumar instructed me, and I imagine him. As banal an issue as it might appear to find out which equally dressed particular person picked up which practically similar yogurt cup, it’s very troublesome to get proper on the pace and accuracy stage wanted as a way to base a whole enterprise on it.
A scholar, in any case, with the sources accessible lately, may most likely design a model of this retailer in a number of weeks that may work 80 % of the time. However to get it proper 99.9 % of the time, frictionlessly and immediately, is a problem that requires an excessive amount of work.
Notably, there is no such thing as a facial recognition used (I requested). Amazon maybe sensed early on that this could earn them rebuke from privacy-conscious consumers, although the concept of these folks coming to this retailer strikes me as unlikely. As an alternative, the system makes use of different visible cues and watches for continuity between cameras — you’re by no means not in sight of a lens, so it’s simple for the system to see a client transfer from one digicam to a different and make the connection.
Ought to there be a technical downside with a digicam or it will get sauce on its lens someway, the system doesn’t break down fully. It’s been examined with cameras lacking, although naturally it wouldn’t be lengthy earlier than a alternative is put in place and the system re-re-calibrates.
Along with the cameras, there are weight sensors within the cabinets, and the system is conscious of each merchandise’s precise weight — so no making an attempt to seize two yogurts without delay and palm the second, as I thought of making an attempt. You would possibly be capable of do it Indiana Jones type, with an acceptable quantity of sand in a sack, however that’s extra effort than most shoplifters are prepared to place out.
And, as Kumar famous to me, most individuals aren’t shoplifters, and the system is designed round most individuals. Constructing a system that assumes unwell intent fairly than merely detecting discrepancies isn’t at all times a very good design alternative.
There may be in actual fact a human within the loop ought to the system discover itself in a bind, however Kumar stated this was uncommon sufficient that it hardly wanted to be thought of. He additionally stated that the issue of monitoring the shop doesn’t improve with sq. footage, although in fact you’ll want extra cameras and extra processing energy.
It’s additionally been examined with severe crowds; we have been there throughout a sluggish time within the mid-afternoon, however shortly earlier than that was the lunch rush, they instructed me, when dozens fairly than a handful of individuals may very well be discovered strolling out and in with out doing something greater than exhibiting their telephone to a sensor on the entrance.
There is probably not cashiers, however there are workers: stockers who replenish stock; an ID checker (and erstwhile sommelier I’m positive) within the wine and beer part, and cooks within the again throwing collectively contemporary sandwiches and meal kits. Somebody additionally hovers within the entrance space to assist folks with the app, reply questions, and take returns.
The choice was primarily grab-and-go lunches and snacks, with the standard handful of home items you seize on the bodega on the best way dwelling. Costs have been what you’d count on at a grocery store fairly than a comfort retailer, although.
As for the anticipated Amazon gambits that leverage its current properties and hooks, few are to be discovered. The app is self-contained, and your purchases are tracked there fairly than in your “predominant” Amazon account. Prime members don’t get decrease costs. Entire Meals has a bit of part of its personal however there’s no broader partnership (and no plans to transform any of these shops to Go, although I can’t think about why not).
Total I’m impressed with the seamlessness of the system, and I can see these items efficiently working right here and there.
On the philosophical aspect, I’m troubled, in fact — a comfort retailer you simply stroll out of is a pleasant masks on the face of a extremely controversial utility of know-how: ubiquitous private surveillance.
It’s a bit overkill, I believe, to switch a checker or self-checkout stand with 100 cameras that unblinkingly file each tiny motion. What’s to achieve? 20 or 30 seconds of your time again? Lack of comfort has hardly been a criticism for this market — it’s proper there within the identify: “comfort retailer.”
Like so some ways firms are making use of tech at this time, this appears to me an immense quantity of ingenuity and sources getting used to “resolve” one thing that few folks care about and fewer nonetheless think about an issue. As a technical achievement it’s exceptional, however then once more, so is a robotic canine.
The shop works — that a lot I can say for it. The place Amazon will take it from right here I couldn’t say, nor would anybody reply meaningfully to my questions alongside these strains. Amazon Go might be open to the general public beginning this week, however whether or not anybody will discover it to be something greater than a novelty is but to be seen.
