Book Carmilla vs Adaptations (SPOILERS)

Here are a few 'interesting' adaptations. I like some of them for their own merits, but mostly dislike them as Carmilla adaptations for the below reasons, with some notable exceptions: Vampyr: The Dream of Allan Gray (1932 film): The first Carmilla inspired movie, although it keeps almost NOTHING from the novella except 'female vampire'. In this case, a creepy old lady rather than a charming young lesbian. This is a really moody, slow, acid trip of a film though, a treat for fans of vintage vampire film. (3/10) Hammer Karnstein Trilogy: The Vampire Lovers is the gayest and most book-accurate. Carmilla still kisses/seduces men before killing them, boo. The second one her identically-named reincarnation is blonde and has sex with / falls in love with a man booooooo. She's not in the third one at all. It's all very 70's and nowhere near queer enough, but at least we got the incomparable Ingrid Pitt in the first movie. 5/10. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust: 'Carmilla' shows up as a surprise third act villain. She's an elegant and imposing vampire queen with a castle called "Cjethe" and the Vampire King offed her previously for being A Bit Too Extra. She's... Bathory. She's Elizabeth Bathory, right down to the name of her historical castle, the elaborate gowns and the blood-bathing. Bathory in Castlevania Nocturne even looks a lot like this one. Cool scary vampire lady, but Carmilla In Name Only. 4/10 Castlevania (Games): She's fine here, but mostly just kind of a big Dracula groupie like most of the other non-Dracula vampires. Often depicting as a flying skull or mask crying bloody tears, with optional succubus-like figure reclining on top of it. Cool. Rondo of Blood has her appear together with a ninja vampire Laura with bunny ears because why the hell not. 6/10 Castlevania (Netflix show): Baddass, angry Karen. She's amazing in the first season when she's scheming against Dracula, but after that she just sort of sits on her butt sipping wine and griping about men for a whole season until Isaac storms her castle. A cool character but not a great Carmilla, because Carmilla for me is defined by how much she loves women, not how much she hates men. Still amazing voice work by Jaime Murray though and her last stand was insanely baddass. 7/10

Carmilla Web Series / Movie: My favorite adaptation. It's obviously playing waaaay fast and loose with the canon and reframing her as a charming antihero in a zany urban fantasy, but there's deep current of love for the source material, especially in the movie. Natasha Negovanlis has charisma off the charts and the Hollstein romance is adorable. This Carmilla might be a black-leather-wearing snarky millenial goth with a Canadian accent, but as the show goes on it peels back layer after layer of the romantic, poetic, wistful, world-weary immortal hinted at by the novella. This show redeems LeFanu's lovelorn villain in all the best ways. 10/10. 2019 movie / Styria movie: I still haven't seen these, have heard good things about the gothic cinematography on the most recent one but not good things about the rest of it. The trailer looked moody and pretty though, I may watch it at some point.

Lumax: Also a 100/10. They're just so!!!

Elmax: 9/10. I love them with my whole heart but I'm a Lumax shipper first and foremost.

Elumax: 100000/10. Literal perfection. Elmax AND Lumax (and Hopclair, depending on how you view the ship dynamic)? Literally what more could you want?

Duzie: 7/10. They're cute and I really like Suzie. I wish we could've seen more of them, maybe Suzie will come back with a bigger role next season.

Henderhop: 6/10. Typically I HC El as a lesbian but I actually like this pairing. Definitely not a ship I'd die on but I enjoy interacting with the fan content.

Henderclair: 6/10. Listen, I love their dynamic. If I didn't HC Dustin as the token straight, I'd probably rate them higher. Platonically? Literally everything to me. Romantically? I'm not opposed.

Byclair: 8/10. I also like them a lot but I'm a die-hard Byler shipper. I do enjoy interacting with the fan content though!

Wheelclair: 7/10. They're silly and I love them but this is a particular dynamic I prefer platonic. I do HC that Mike had a crush on Lucas when they were younger though.

Mileven: 1/10. I'm just not a fan. I'm giving them a one solely cuz I enjoyed them in season 1 when I first watched the show in middle school, but I'm definitely not a fan of this ship at all. Platonically though?? Amazing.

Jancy: 10/10. I love them. I'm praying every day that the Duffers didn't completely fuck them up and that they'll be endgame.

Ronance: 9/10. I like them, they're cute. I interact with a lot of their fan content. Let's go lesbians.

Rovickie/Rockie: 7/10. I just don't know enough about Vickie yet to know if them as endgame is what I'm rooting for, but from what we've seen they're cute.

Stonathan: 10/10. I love them and I'm so excited for their interactions in season 5! They're the enemies to lovers.

Jargyle: 9/10. Love me some stoner boyfriends. They've definitely kissed before at least once.

Stancy: -10000/10. BOOOOOOO 🍅🍅🍅. They are not right for each other. Steve deserves someone who loves him and Nancy deserves someone she loves.

Stoncy: 3/10. If it's in the way that Steve and Jonathan are dating and Jonathan and Nancy are dating with Nancy and Steve being platonic, then sure. But if it's all three dating, nah. Steve and Nancy just don't work imo.

Buckingham (Chrissy x Robin): 8/10. I think this is considered a rare pair but I think they're adorable and I love the fan content around them.

Hellcheer: 5/10. Not my favorite but I have no issues with this ship. I see the vision of them as best friends mainly.

Steddie: 5/10. They're not bad and I interact with some of their fan content (some of their tiktok edits go hard), but they're just kind of okay, you know?

Jopper: 10/10. I love them. Been a Jopper fan since day one. They're so endgame.

okay the dressing room scene . the fear in angels voice through all of it is so jarring and it keeps you invested in the scene and Val being so fuckinh disgusting and evil . how do people like this guy at all. this scene is so creepy not just cuz of val being abusive but because of how horrified Angel is and the moment he asks the bare minimum of val not hurting charlie his life is put on the line. i feel like this was treated with the weight it deserves and it clearly paints val as a villain. unfortunately it’s tainted by the fact that the writers are aroused by this shit but they do a good job of hiding it i guess. maybe this will change 

it bothers me so much that angels head keeps randomly changing in size cuz all the animation is freehand

poison. im gonna be careful and respectful on how i go about talking about this . i actually really like this song and sequence but it’s brought down so bad and made so beyond creepy and horrifying to know that the writers are into this. i like the constant parallel of angel being his porn actor persona who loves sex and his abused reality where he wants to be free. and the scene where he’s dancing in front of a screen with the foxes intercut with his assault is really uncomfortable yeah but i like how it shows that he’s turning his own abuse and exploitation into entertainment . and the line “it’s so hard to resist another gulp!” or however it goes has a nice double meaning . it’s like “ughhh i love sex how could i resist it” but also “i want to resist but im so deep into this that i can’t” . i am not a sexual assault survivor so i don’t feel properly equipped to go into depth about the representation of angels ongoing abuse but from a PURELYcinematic standpoint as someone with a passion for this stuff i feel like this song did well, but again it’s made so much worse and creepier knowing the writers who made this

I can't believe I'm writing this but the thing with Olivia and the bullying... Yes, the bullying the fans do is very real but it what started it was a business deal. Olivia can't say anything about it because it was a PR stunt. Olivia's record label is Universal, Sabrina's is Island which is owned by Universal. Sabrina's most internationally famous song is about the bullying she got because of the alleged love triangle, she actively profited from it. It's painfully obvious for anyone over 25 that the whole thing was just a taylor swift inspired ploy to make these two girls famous and sell more records. It worked for Taytay for 20 years and it worked for this kids too. If there was ever something for Taylor to sue over, its because they stole her favorite marketing strategy.

Also, both Olivia's and Sabrina's fans are too young to realize, but the blonde cheerleader type and the edgy punk rock brunette fighting over the soulful curly haired heartthrob? Literally the plot of "Drive me crazy" starring Melissa Joan Hart.

Is there proof?

I don't doubt it. I know all too well (pun intended), that the music industry has a history of manufacturing drama for clicks and views. I remember watching the whole ordeal go down and just thinking that there is no way this is happening. How can anyone watch the illusion scene and the deleted bits and actually believe Loki is a cold hearted psychopath? I have this fucked up headcanon that Loki almost attempted suicide after Frigga’s death and either stopped himself…or Thor showed up right on time. I can’t prove it but I know it’s true by gut instinct.

There’s something so weirdly profound about someone who seeks out death being unkillable. Character who thinks he represents death actually represents life. That’s something the Loki series actually did well. They definitely screwed up his character in places, but I can see the backbone of what they intended. I don’t know how to explain this, but I don’t ship Sylvie with TVA Loki, I ship her with Pre-Ragnarok Loki. Aka, I characterize TVA Loki as closer to OG Loki than he is thus far.

There’s a tiny detail about Loki that makes me go feral. You have to psychoanalyze a little, but Loki doubts his brother even cares about him, so whenever Thor says he feels betrayed and threatens him, Loki smiles. It means Thor cared. It means there’s hope. Negative attention is better than none at all. Disappointment is better than apathy. I wish I didn’t know how he feels.

today's Really Weird Design Bullshit (put below a break because it got very long and technical very fast):

I'm reworking my husband's resume. It lists Fuṣḥa Arabic as one of his language competencies, and apparently the s-with-a-dot-underneath and h-with-a-dot-underneath glyphs are both part of the Latin Extended Additional unicode block which is NOT in basically any of my type sets. I have no idea how the fuck we got here, but we're here.

After a lot (a LOT) of digging, I found a place to download typefaces for free for personal use, but the lone guy who includes this character seems to be specialising in title and branding types and less the sort of workaday typefaces. (Which is fair. The workhorses are supposed to be less flashy. I love them, though. I gotta learn the software for type design.)

I have found ONE (1) typeface that looks like it'll do the job (I need it to sort of blend in with Book Antiqua -- I'm not redoing this entire resume to match this one typeface, it'll look clunky, I don't like the typeface itself for a whole sheet of paper).

... however, it looks like all my favourite typefaces change the shape of their lowercase letter A between regular/roman and italic fonts. Regular has the little hat-serif-cap thing; italic is the round version. But the typeface I found is a variable type, so it's intended for use with a newer version of the adobe set (booooooo), but I can brute-force it with a little slanting and tracking and letter-width-tweaking. InDesign has been powerful long before creative cloud came out.

in order to make the new typeface not stand out like a sore thumb (since its lowercase As have the hat-serif-thing), I just created a new character style called "italic" wherein I took Book Antiqua, slanted it 12 degrees, shrunk the letter width, and added a teeny tiny paper-coloured stroke around the outside of the letters to make them look lighter. And then every case wherein I had originally used Book Antiqua Italic, I replaced with Book Antiqua [italics] character style.

catching up on agt from last week so here's my thoughts on the acts i missed:

sharpe family singers - i hated them from the moment they walked out. they give me annoying family influencer vibes. their dad looks like a creep and i'd bet the sister and oldest brother are fucking. they lost me even more with the song choice and cheesy performance. bleh.

adrian & hurricane - honestly one of the most impressive dog acts i've seen. as howie pointed out, hurricane didn't need any cues and even kept performing alone once adrian walked offstage. i love them and i can't wait to see how they step it up in the future.

chen lei - it was okay. hand-balancing acts are always relatively impressive. i just feel like i've seen a lot of this same thing before, with the balancing at tall heights thing. those little flips he did were cool, and the split. not a bad act by any means but also nothing really new.

trailer flowers - i thought their first song was an original at first and i was gonna criticize it for sounding generic but then i realized it was a cover bc i recognized the chorus. (it's a luke bryan song.) their actual original is also pretty underwhelming but the harmonies were nice. i'm not a fan but i can see them becoming popular in the lives (assuming they make it that far).

erica coffelt - respect for her being a self-taught dancer. it felt kinda unprofessional, though, like someone just trying to impress at a party. she's definitely talented but it's nothing amazing or really worthy of lives, unless she steps it up and really improves her choreo. i'll root for her improvement.

ryland - ah, the kid i just missed last week. can't british people just audition for bgt instead? his showmanship needs a lot of help. he's nowhere near as charming as that kid magician from champions. and i don't really care for his "magic" either. this whole predictive thing just isn't really cool anymore. also why is the magic word "scam"? bc we're being scammed by him/this show? how ironic. also simon got his voice back after this act so booooooo.

Prime 3's exploration was hampered by the map being composed of five different planets and long loading screens between relatively small sections. It makes the whole game feel very disconnected, and the sequence of events are naturally quite strict.

(Full marks to the game on a number of other factors, the story and gameplay and explorations of the pirate and federation worlds were all top-notch, and the scale of the war and the invasion of Phaaze were stellar. This game did as much to define the grand-scale worldbuilding of the franchise as most of the other games put together. It never felt like a full universe before Corruption.)

I've heard the exploration is quite limited, but I don't know how it compares to Fusion and Corruption, so I can't speak on that.

I can speak on its story and canonicity though. And as far as my opinions go there, I have some mixed feelings. On the one hand, everybody's right: the story, the visuals, the direction and the dialogue all suck, and seem incompatible with the other games. They make Samus out to be weaker and subservient, the whole authorization-angle is pretty stupid, Adam is a real buttwipe with a face only a mother could love, mother brain being recreated as a human, "the Deleter" "Deleting" things, and the scene where Adam shoots her in the back? All pretty lame. And the plot point where the suit disappears if she doesn't maintain the will to manifest it? Boooo! Laaaame! The piss yellow color and the sleek look of the OM suit? BoooOOOO! Lame! The new Federation suits? BOOOOOO! LAAAME!

On the OTHER hand (ha ha other get it), the game does a lot with Samus's character. And if you've never played or seen the game, and were to just listen to the broad strokes of the plot explained out loud, then it isn't too bad; in fact, there are a lot of things there I would welcome into Metroid Canon with open arms:

Her backstory in the military was excellent: Adam was a careful, highly analytical, seemingly-emotionless officer, who clashed often with a more headstrong and reckless young Samus. There was the event where their cruiser was towing an civilian vessel in distress, and when its reactor threatened to go critical, Adam ordered them to cut the lines with their own men still inside. Samus protested, insisted on rushing back to save their men, but Adam was right, and the ship blew before she would've been able to succeed. That taught her a bit of caution, gave him a bit of guilt, and gave them a mutual respect for each other. But nevertheless, their differences in doctrine, and her will to do the right thing regardless of orders, was what eventually drove her away from the military and into bounty hunting.

Her relationship with Anthony? Sweet. "RemEMbeR mE" memes aside, it would've been awesome for her to have a close friend from back-in-the-day, if they were ever given a chance to really interact and bounce off each other, they could've had a great dynamic: him the optimistic extroverted dudebro with a nickname for everyone, her the serious and silent martyr of a thousand moons, who spent a lifetime learning how to be everything but human. Their relationship could be a rare thread of normalcy and humanity in her life, and if I ever write a Metroid fanfic where she questions her place in the universe, I would definitely bring back Anthony. Great character. Wasted character.

Adam's character arc and death? Awesome. It started as just another mission, but red tape and interference from shadowy bureaucracy keeps interfering and snapping at his heels, he's always got eyes over his shoulder, he's got a bounty hunter he can't control, he's never told what he needs to know, his men keep dying whenever they find out too much, and when he finally finds out too much himself he doesn't like it, until finally he decides he's had enough with the bureaucracy and the shadow games. His conscience finally doesn't allow him to order other men to their deaths anymore, so he takes a cue from Samus of all people, discards his duty to the almighty Federation, and sacrifices himself to blow up the genetics lab. That's beautiful. And it compliments his character arc in Fusion, where he's been mind wiped and uploaded into a computer and used as a pawn by these same shadowy players, and has to remember how to make the same hard calls. History may not be as kind to Adam as he deserves, but he was a hero in his own way.

Uhhh what else happened in OM? Samus's PTSD returned from the manga, and Other M butchered it like it did everything else, but conceptually it's not something I have any problem with, in fact I think it makes a lot of sense, and it could have been a meaningful and powerful scene, a glimpse into all the pain and all the fear she keeps hidden inside, all the darkness she's stomped down flat in the bottom of her soul and tried to ignore. Ridley digging that darkness back up, and Anthony, a fellow soldier, knowing what that's like and being there to help her, that all could've done very well. To bad, like everything else in OM, it was NOT.

TL;DR: if you imagine in your brain that OM happened completely differently, with all the same characters and story beats but with no resemblance to its actual form, then you can imagine that it's an excellent, small, self-contained story that fleshes out Samus's, Adam's, and Ridley's characters, and adds Anthony as a bonus.

Rating all of Sub-Zero’s costumes Part 1

Mortal Kombat 1

Very first time we see Sub-Zero so I’ve gotta respect it, this is THE starting model after all. The blue is a nice shade, everything looks very loose but the gi looks like it’s going to fall off his shoulders. Budget friendly. 5/10

Mortal Kombat 2

Now this is THE klassic look, I quite like the streamlined way everything fits. I also enjoy the random straps on his upper arm and the addition of the random string on his belt. I dislike the texture of the gi, looks like its made from a blanket you would find at grandmas. Not a fan of his lame motorcycle shin guards. 7/10

Mortal Kombat 1995

Boring. Hate the mask, hate his neck sock, look like the kinda guy who would get killed with a bucket of water. 3/10

Mortal Kombat Trilogy

THOT SUB-ZERO. Love it. I think this is still the sluttest male outfit we’ve gotten and I respect it. Tits are out and ready to rip a spine. Good for him. 8/10

Mortal Kombat Annihilation

BOOOOOOO COWARDS! They knew they couldn’t contain the set if they let Sub-Zero get his tiddies out so they SILENCED him. 4/10

Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance

Damn alright daddy calm down. I like that he’s gone back to his thot days with some added features. We’ve got some chunky boots and some insignias. Clearly working it. Not sure what the point of his little string arm guards are though and there’s nothing connecting to that piece of fabric that covers his junk. 6/10

Mortal Kombat Deception

The flair!! I really enjoy the design. Cool helmet and I think the dragon art is v cool. Nice warrior stance although I find the armor clunky. It really screams cryomancer to me.....but I feel like this would suit Bi-Han more than Kuai Liang. 7/10

Very behind on the Christmas Writing Challenge I’m doing but that’s because I worked all weekend as well as all day Thursday.

Currently eating KFC for dinner and planning my Monday (working in the evening but got to run errands in the morning).

uh oh, don't tell @the-blind-assassin-12 ... the Jets are her team (for better or worse). I do really like the Saints, though; Drew Brees was our fantasy football QB for a while, and they were always fun yto watch. A win is a win, no matter who it's against.

Working all weekend = booooooo. But at least the exta $$ will come in handy. You might be behind now, but you can always catch up, right? I hope you get a break for the actual holiday, and that all of the extra work now means a little less *later*

I couldn't tell you the last time we had KFC, and there's one right down the street - do you get regular or extra crispy? And the cinnamon rolls are DELICIOUS. We weren't Costco members at this time last year, so this is the first time I've ever bought them... and they're amazing. They look so damn messy but I don't even CARE.

Monday morning errands are the worst - and I hope wherever you need to go isn't too busy and you can get in and out as fas as possible.
