Bellarke on the Ark- The Unexpected

On the Ark there are laws that must be followed to the letter, if not they will face the ultimate punishment- Death. Everyone must ration accordingly, work as scheduled, and bare no more than one child. That is to say once they are married. But for those that are expecting our of wedlock? Will find themselves on the other side of the Ark’s airlock. The father will float first, the mother second once the child is born. No exceptions. Especially to those with relations outside of their own stations.

What will Clarke Griffin, the daughter of Chief of Engineering and Lead Surgeon on the Ark, do when she realizes her implant has failed and she and her boyfriend from Factory have an unexpected surprise on the way? 

Will Clarke’s Alpha Station family, and members of the Ark’s council, be able to save her life? Will they be able to save the life of their grandchild and it’s father? Or will Clarke and Bellamy pay the ultimate price?

This was inspired purely from a photo of Bellamy from season 1 on the Ark. And once I found a photo of Clarke the story plot came to mind. It’s like the book from when Glass was pregnant and was imprisoned. So kind of like a book/ TV show mashup but with bellarke? 

There is also a color version added below! And if anyone wants to write this idea, feel free to do so! All I ask is that you tag me so I can read your beautiful work!

Dear Arthur,

I hope this message finds you well. I just wanted to tell you of my recent experience in a new town that reminds me of Camelot. The town is small, and the people are friendly. I have rented a small apartment, which will be my home for a few months. After dropping off my luggage, I went for a walk to explore the area.

But as I walked, I couldn't shake the feeling that you were there. I found myself muttering to myself and sometimes waiting for one of your snide remarks. It's funny how your way of showing me that you liked me was to call me an idiot. I never took it seriously because I knew it was your way of expressing your love or affection for me. It would have been too obvious if you had called me dear or love, wouldn't it?

As I walked around, I couldn't help but notice this guy who caught my eye. He bore some resemblance to you in height and manner. He was also standing with his back to me. In an instant, my heart skipped a beat, and I felt a sudden surge of emotion. It is these moments that touch me and shake me to the core, even after all this time. I immediately began to imagine you by my side. It still devastates me after all this time. And do you know why? It's because I never give up hope that we will be together.

I often wonder what will happen when we finally meet again. If one day I see someone and they turn around, it will be you. Our eyes will meet, and I don't know what will happen. Will we pick up where we left off? Hardly. I mean, you can't expect me to be your servant anymore. But I am sure we will find a way to get along.

I have some errands to run now, but I just wanted to let you know how much I miss you. Until next time, Arthur. And don't expect me to sign this. Your humble servant.

Aside from changing versions of Photoshop, not a lot has changed in terms of what I'm doing. I work in Photoshop 2023 right now, but I used CS2 from '13 to '16.

I've experimented with other ideas. Some manippers just use the clone stamp tool to edit out the irises and maintain the color and texture of the eyes but I've always felt that realism in hypno manipping is more unsettling than anything else. I briefly tried painting a super soft black brush around the perimeter of the eyes to create the shadow effect but the results were never good.

I actually picked 2015 to start with my remaster project because it was the year I really started experimenting and thinking critically about what works and what doesn't. The longer I do this the more I raise expectations for myself and what I consider acceptable. I know that people out there are going to like any kind of manip that I do because that's just the nature of the space, but for me personally, I have to set my own expectations or I'll get bored with it.

I guess the biggest thing in terms of what I'm actually doing differently is that I try to accomplish the manip in as few clicks as possible. Whether that's drawing the outline of the eye (which I usually do in one motion and fix later), or using the dodge tool to add the glow effect. I do that in three to five clicks of the mouse and move in broad circles from the center of the eye outward. When you click around too much you get that weird splotchy look in the eyes, so it's better to limit the steps that it takes to make the manip. Lately I've been going back over with the blur tool very conservatively to blend the hard edges of the new eyes into the source image too. This is actually a step that was in the original tutorial that I followed but I was too lazy to follow it.

I might just do a screen recording of a manip one day. It doesn't take more than five minutes most of the time.

Not sure why I started on the year 2015 when I'd been doing this for nearly two years by then, but I finally finished up remastering all of my manips from that year. I thought these two were a good example of how my style has changed and improved over the years. 2015 is left, 2023 is right.
