50 Bookish Questions Tag!
Thanks to @enogreads for tagging me :)
1. What is your favourite book and/or book series of all time?
All-time favorites are always a stretch for me because the books that matter most to me shift based on what I need at the time, but The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet and We Are Okay are books that make me feel at home. And the child in me is saying, “don’t forget to mention the Wayside School books!” so you know, those too.
2. What is the longest book you have ever read? How many pages?
Maybe Deathly Hallows? gr says it’s 784 pages.
3. What is the oldest book you have ever read? (Based on its written date)
I don’t have a lot of interest in old books, but probably Gulliver’s Travels.
4. What is a book series that everyone else loves but you do not?
Divergent. Though my main frustrations are with the writing not the story I guess. Other than that I never caught onto the Percy Jackson train. Don’t hate it, just don’t love it.
5. What book or book series would you like to see turned into a film/ TV series?
Ah yes. So many. Screenwriting is not something I’m pursuing but it’s a hobby, and everything I read gets the “could this be adapted” thought process. The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet would make a perfect limited miniseries, but could also be serialized based on the concept. Beauty Queens would be great as anything from a musical to a tv show to a movie to a comic book tbh. Ramona Blue has a “shot over a long weekend with unknowns and maybe one biggER name star who’s also producing” indie vibe. Ditto for We Are Okay. The Song of Achilles should be a miniseries as well; one of those massive budget, A-list cast, premium cable shows. I could go on, but I’ll spare you.
6. What is your favourite stand-alone book?
Ari + Dante
7. What is a book that you feel glad for not reading?
None I can think of.
8. What is a book that you feel guilty for not reading?
I feel somewhat guilty for not finishing The Dark Wife because it feels like I’m not showing wlw solidarity, but as much as I go hard for the concept, the execution was so disappointing to me.
9. What is a book you have read that is set in your country of birth?
Fun Home
10. What is a book that you own more than one copy of?
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is the only one except for plays. Like I have Shakespeare anthologies plus some individual plays. And I have the off-Broadway and Broadway copies of Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
11. What horror book made you really scared?
I don’t read horror!
12. What book do you passionately hate?
Ok so I’m like passionately not impressed by this book that I’m also lowkey obsessed with. It’s not good. Elements are but overall I don’t like it. but I’m just so intrigued that I’ve read it multiple times and made a million notes. It’s Fated by S.G. Browne. Every time I hope it will be less not good and it never happens.
13. What is the biggest book series you have read? How many books are in it?
There’s no way it’s not Harry Potter.
14. What book gives you happy memories?
On the Banks of Plum Creek
15. What book made you cry?
Y’all I cry so easily. The Song of Achilles tho...... sobbed.
16. What book made you laugh?
When Dimple Met Rishi is really sweet and pure and I’ve literally lol’d a few times.
17. What is your favourite book that contains an LGBTQ+ character?
Ramona Blue, currently. I’m also a big fan of The Sidhe.
18. Have you read a book with a male protagonist? What is it?
Lmao aren’t they all... um yeah idk I just looked over at my bookshelf and one of my new faves is Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor.
19. Have you read a book set on another planet? What is it?
A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs. (The Barsoom tales were, like, a thing for me after I was assigned that one in college.)
20. Have you ever been glad to not finish a series? Which?
Not really? I’m kinda keeping The Last Star at arm’s length because The 5th Wave was such a terrible movie and made my excitement for the series disappear. But I’m also trying to get over that because one shouldn’t necessarily impact enjoyment of the other.
21. Have you ever read a book series because you were pressured?
Probably the Hunger Games. I really wanted to get them read before the movie came out and I couldn’t avoid spoilers. Plus my college roommate was reading them at the same time so it was a good time to squee together. So pressured, but not in a bad way.
22. What famous author have you not read any books by?
Douglas Adams. Hitchhiker’s Guide has long been on my tbr but I’ve been itching to read it lately.
23. Who is your favourite author of all time?
Oscar Wilde.
24. How many bookshelves do you own?
Just bought two last week, so now I have six.
25. How many books do you own?
dont make me admit that. More than I’ve ever properly budgeted for, let’s say that.
26. What is your favourite non-fiction book?
Save the Cat! My interest in screenwriting led me to it, but it’s a really useful tool for novelists as well and anybody telling stories.
27. What is your favourite children’s/middle-grade book?
Hmmm... The Little Prince perhaps.
28. What is your next book on your TBR?
My library hold for Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari just came through this morning, so I’m going to get to that when I finish When Dimple Met Rishi.
29. What book are you currently reading?
When Dimple Met Rishi. So good. So sweet. And it features a girl in STEM wow amazing five stars for that.
30. What book are you planning on buying next?
Noooooooo. I just spent so much last week, and now that I’m apartment hunting, no more books. Tragic.
31. What was the cheapest book you bought?
There’s a great used bookstore in Boston with an outdoor bargain area and I think I’ve picked up stuff for $3 and under.
32. What was the most expensive book you bought?
Alright. Y’all already might’ve peeped me revealing that back in the day I was superwholock garbage. WEll. I have this “The Essential Supernatural: On the Road with Sam and Dean Winchester” donkey ass book that is $50 and I probably got a little discount but still paid really close to that amount.
33. What is a book you read after seeing the movie/ TV series?
Big Fish. I’m genuinely astounded that that movie came from that book. Like, the leaps from page to screen y’all.
34. What is the newest book you have bought?
Tumblr media
these are all the books I bought at B&N last week
35. What three books are you most looking forward to reading this year?
Radio Silence, The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter, and The Princess Diarist.
36. What is a book you love that has a terrible trope? (Love triangle, etc)
Ugh this is such a good question and here I am drawing a total blank.
37. Have you read a book in a different language? What was it?
Only some basic Spanish books when I took classes in middle and high school. Though my niece is in a bilingual program and brings home a lot of books with English and Spanish versions.
38. What is a book you’ve read that is set in a time period before you were born?
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
39. What book offended you?
WE ARE OKAY. ARE WE, NINA? ARE WE OKAY? nOPE
‘kay but I genuinely was offended because Dunkin’ Donuts coffee is compared to diner coffee and legit like.... no???????? Dunks never did nothin’ to you and ur rly gonna come for it like that??? ok, Nina. ur wrong, but ok.
40. What is the weirdest book you have read?
Uhhh. Yet again, she draws a blank!
41. What is your favourite duology?
Isn’t Strange the Dreamer meant to be a duology? The second book’s not even out and that’s my favorite.
42. What is your favourite trilogy?
Answering this question, I’m realizing that I haven’t read many trilogies in my life. Definitely The Hunger Games though. I just gorged myself on all three during a weekend-long summer storm.
43. What book did you buy because of its cover?
Wuthering goddamn Heights. I don’t even like that book, but the cover was phenomenal and I was like ok yeah Camille, let’s fkn do it
44. What is a book that you love, but has a terrible cover?
Aww that’s mean. I can’t think of any. I usually go for pretty covers and forget the rest. But I have the edition of Radio Silence with the cover I like less if that counts?
45. Do you own a poetry anthology? What is your favourite poem from it?
I don’t have an appreciation for poetry, sorry! I do own anthologies because I majored in English and had a writing concentration, but that’s literally the only reason I have them: they were assigned. So no favorite.
But since that seems lame and I haven’t been asked about short stories, I have a favorite from the 2013 Pushcart Prize XXXVII: Best of the Small Presses. It’s called “Juniper Beach” by Shannon Cain and it’s so wonderful. Really tight narrative woven together with zero snags along the way.
46. Do you own any colouring books based off other books?
Nope. Really wanted the Fantastic Beasts one but my wallet said ho don’t do it and for once, I listened.
47. Do you own any historical fiction?
I do not own any, but -and this feels totally like someone else’s memories- when I was a teen, I was all over Harlequin historical romance books oh my god.
48. What book made you angry?
See #39. I put that book down for weeks over it and told everyone I knew about the slanderous lies within.
49. What book has inspired you?
Paint It Black and White Oleander both make me want to be that good of a writer.
50. What book got you into reading?
Honestly my mother got me into reading, not any particular book, though imma single one out in a moment. Like my mom has literally never gone a day that I’ve been alive not spent reading. She got me started at the library young and I read my way through the whole children’s section. The Boxcar Children and the Baby-Sitter’s Club books were a big draw. And the one I’m singling out is On the Banks of Plum Creek which was a library discard. I read and reread that one about a million times. I’d loved books and reading but I’d never feasted on a book before that one. I never read the Little House series, my obsession was limited to that one book.
I’m tagging: @ozzery, @anassarhenisch, @midnightinkspill, @mariedtofiction, @rawr-booklover  @booksandsweettea, and @thewizard-ofbooks
As usual, if you’re tagged please feel no pressure to play! And if you’re not tagged and you wanna play, please go forth and do so!

Album Review by Bradley Christensen The Bunny The Bear – The Way We Rust Record Label: Needful Things Release Date: March 17 2017
Over the weekend, Chicago deathcore band Veil Of Maya put up a bunch of old merch on their website, all on clearance, because they needed to clear it out, so I got a couple shirts that looked really cool, especially since I don’t have any merch of theirs. I’ve been debating on listening to this band again, because it’s been a few years since I’ve spent some time with them, but the day that I’m writing this, I dusted off all of my Veil Of Maya albums (minus their debut LP, 2006’s All Things Set Aside, because I’ve actually never listened to that one before), and I’ve been listening to them all afternoon / evening. What’s interesting about that is, well, I’ve been a fan of this band for about nine years. I got into this band when I was 14-years-old, I believe, because I remember wanting a copy of 2008’s The Common Man’s Collapse for Christmas, along with other deathcore albums. That album means a lot to me, actually, because it’s an album that steered me in the right direction to heavier music, as well as more straightforward death metal, not just deathcore. These guys are one of the few “core” bands from my teenage years that I really like. Hell, their last album, 2015’s Matriarch, was pretty freaking dope. I remember picking it up, too; I had gotten off work kind of late, but I walked over to Best Buy, just to pick it up, because I had to listen to it. I’ve been a huge fan of these guys for the last nine years now, and that’s quite a feat, because I haven’t really been a fan of a lot of bands for that long. When you’re young, you listen to stuff, but you either grow out of it, or it just doesn’t stick with you, but some things do. There’s a reason that I bring up Veil Of Maya, not just because I enjoy talking about them, but I wanted to start off this review by talking about a band that I remember fondly from those years.
Another band that I remember hearing right around that same time was electronicore band The Bunny The Bear. If you don’t remember them, or even know who they are, that’s okay, because they’re a band that time, as well as Hot Topic, forgot about, and rightfully so. From their Wikipedia page, it looks like they’ve been trucking on since 2008, releasing an album every year or two. This year is no exception, as they’re gearing up to release The Way We Rust, their first LP in a few years. I got an email to cover this record, and the first thing I said to myself was, “Huh, they still exist?” If you need to be refreshed on who this band is, well, they were one of the leading bands in the “electronicore” movement. Think of bands like I See Stars, Attack Attack!, Sky Eats Airplane, Abandon All Ships, and We Butter The Bread With Butter, because that’s exactly what I’m talking about. Most bands like this went into one of two directions – they broke up, as a lot of these bands did during the mid-00s, or they grew up, moving into a different sound, usually not as dated or terrible. Think of electronicore kind of like nu-metal during the early 00s. This was the musical fad for a few years. As such, a lot of copycats and imitators came out, but when the genre faded into obscurity, a lot of these bands followed. Seeing that email about The Bunny The Bear immediately took me back in time to 2008, because that’s the last time I heard about them, but they’re still around, like I said. Since this LP was sent to me by the kind people at their label, I thought I would check it out, because it would be an interesting experience. Not because I was excited to listen to this, but I was wondering if this band actually changed over the last nine years.
For all I knew, The Bunny The Bear could have really improved the years, and people are not giving them enough credit, but on the other hand, this band could still quite terrible. That’s the risk I was willing to take. What’s funny is that an album like The Common Man’s Collapse by Veil Of Maya holds up quite well today, actually, as they were one of the first “tech-death” bands to come out of the scene. That’s another reason why I brought them up, because they are a band that’s not only progressed with every release, and even improved a bit, their early stuff holds up quite well, despite being released in the era of MySpace and Hot Topic. I knew that I was taking a risk with this LP, but isn’t that the risk you take with almost anything? There are cases where you’ll know what you’re going to get with something, but even with your favorite bands, there’s a chance that you might not like something they put out. You take a risk with listening to almost anything for the first time, but I usually try to go into something with a sense of optimism. I was desperately hoping for The Way We Rust to be good, but my morbid curiosity got the best of me. I wanted to like this album, and I wanted it to be good, but The Way We Rust is awful in every single way, shape, and form. I don’t usually talk about bad albums, but sometimes I need to let off some steam. Like I said in the introduction, I started off by talking about Veil Of Maya, because they’re a band that I remember fondly. Their sound hasn’t become dated, cringy, or lame, and they’ve improved with every release, but The Bunny The Bear, as well as their new album, is extremely dated, cringy, and laughably awful. This isn’t the worst thing I’ve ever heard, by any means, but it’s right up there. In terms of this year, this will one of the worst albums I’ve sat through.
The Way We Rust is a strange record, because it’s the kind of record that’s dated in all the wrong ways. If anything, it sounds like it was written in 2008, only to somehow discover a time machine, and magically get released in the present day. There’s no reason for this album to exist, unless the mid-00s are suddenly nostalgic. Even then, who is dying to listen to this? Who’s asking for an album like this? I suppose if you’re somehow still into the electronicore scene, if there is one left, you’ll like this album, but it’s an album that has no reason to exist. The only things that remotely sound good on this album are the clean vocals, which are actually not half bad, and the “core” element of their sound. That part is generic as all hell, so I can’t say it’s really good, or that I like it, but I could tolerate an album of just that. What kills me, however, is that “bleep-bloop” electronic / techno side of them, and that’s where this album is most dated, because I remember hearing those types of synth tones on Attack Attack’s debut album, which came out in 2008. In that album’s defense, they combine both elements a lot better, compared to this album whose production is a giant pile of vomited genres. The Way We Rust has no flow, cohesive, or logical sense. Remember when bands sounded like that back in 2007? Design The Skyline, I Set My Friends On Fire, and even early Iwrestledabearonce had this sound, but it does this band no favors. This is a disgusting, ugly, and gross album to listen to, because it just throws sounds and ideas out of its ass, only there’s no rhyme or reason for it. It’s a mess of an album, both in terms of being dated as all hell, and its overall presentation being ugly and unpleasant. Even if there were a demand for this kind of “core music,” who would really listen to an album this vile-sounding to the ears?
I try to listen to albums more than a couple times when I review them, and a part of me wanted to listen to this more than once, but every time I thought about listening to it again, I developed a sense of nausea. There’s no way in hell I’m listening to this again, only if I want to get really annoyed and pissed off at an album. YouTube film critic Chris Stuckmann has said many times that he tries to look at the positives and negatives of a movie, even if he doesn’t personally enjoy it, but what happens where there are barely any positives? The only thing I really like on this album are the clean vocals, and even that’s a stretch, because they’re buried under awful production. Why bother listening to garbage if there’s only a tiny nugget of gold? I can’t recommend this, folks. Maybe there’s a scene kid out that would like this, but this is one of the worst albums I’ve heard in a long time. I was optimistic about this, and I thought maybe this could be a good album, or that they would have changed their sound a bit. Unfortunately, no, they still think it’s 2008. This subgenre of terrible music is not a zombie, but either way, it should be shot in the head, so it doesn’t keep coming back. As you can see, I hate talking about bad albums. They frustrate me to no end, but who really wants to talk about bad music? Some people do, I guess, but it’s not for me. I can’t do that constantly, or even much at all, because it gives me a headache. The Way We Rust by The Bunny The Bear is an album that you need to avoid at all costs; it’s a detestable, ugly, unpleasant, and grueling listen that takes the worst parts of mid-00s MySpace “scene” music, and puts into a single record. The only real nice thing about this album is that it’s about 38 minutes, so my decent into hell didn’t last forever. Really, though, don’t listen to this album if you don’t wish to torture yourself.

Think… But not too much
Unlike every day, I like to wake up early during weekends and get on with the work I plan during the weekdays. These two days are quite significant as I get to work on the stuff I usually learn during the rest of the week. Estranged from the rest of the world, I simply give myself some ‘lone time’ with a hot cup of tea. After all, we all need to some time to connect with ourselves without external interference.
The ‘lone time’ has its own benefits and consequences; either it can be highly productive, or you can just lay in your bed endlessly. It will not be a fair judgment on how the rest of the world deal with the ‘lone time’ but I have struggled over the years to make this highly valuable period as productive as I think it can be. Trust me, it hasn’t been easy! When you are aimlessly fluttering about the empty rooms of the house, it’s not very difficult for the shady and gray thoughts to out-power your happy morning hours. When we start seeing these tumultuous images with open eyes, we tend to lose the sightings of what’s actually around us.
The successful people that I have met and/or read about, they had one thing in common, which I like to call it - Thought Process Management. It is the way you channelize your thoughts and put conscious efforts to make your brain process the information smoothly. In a way, it is also a way to teach your brain how to prioritize these thoughts. It’s the natural tendency of a human brain to run wild if loosened up. In my perspective, that’s the primary reason why we worry too much because it’s our natural tendency to unleash the randomness of our mental processing, leading to the unrealistic and random imagination.
1.    Have you ever noticed that sometimes we think about multiple things at a given time & often, the things that bother us?
2.    Have you ever noticed that through the day, we give only a very little time to the thoughts that will give us joy, motivation, happiness or an idea that may simply turn the course of future?
There are other questions also that we need to ask –
1.    Why are we in a continuous process to think about the things that we desperately want to avoid?
2.    Why are we in a habit of staying in a continuous loop of repetitive thoughts? Repetitive to such an extent that it almost feels like a trapped song that keeps on playing till it drives us crazy.
Scientific studies have shown that an average person can process 50,000 thoughts in a day, meaning 38 to 40 thoughts in a minute. What if we start processing 100 thoughts per minute or even more? Chances are, we will go crazy. It is also important to note that even a single negative thought can trigger 1000’s of other negative impressions of the present and the past. We often tend to start losing touch with the reality. Most importantly… the present! When it happens, people spiral down to experiencing anxiety and depression. Many times, we think about something, we do something else and our interpretation of the event is out-of-context. Hence, it becomes extremely vital to managing our thought process. And it takes effort and practice.
Thinking with Singularity
Growing up hasn’t been easy for me. It has been my habit, which I have inherited from my mother, not to let go the thing easily. Adversities left a resonating impact on my personality. I experienced a drastic shift in my mindset. The scary frescoes of my bad experiences made me increasingly fearful. Over the years, I continued adding obstructive thoughts to my bucket but cared very little to let go of the ones that were already in there. For the first time, I could witness the multiplicative nature of the impeding thoughts which were obstructing the good things that were on my way. My over-burning brain was finding it extremely difficult to differentiate and process what was more important. It drove me insane; I was apprehended with depression, paranoia, and resentful anger. I could literally hear voices in an empty room. Yes, it was that bad.
Back then, I was estranged with the concept of meditation. As I increasingly submerged myself into the various meditative techniques, my own thoughts became more and more tangible. I could identify them, differentiate & observe them like a third person. It helped me to take a long walk with a single thought at a time. I could muse on it as much as I wanted to and then, let go of it for good. It helped me to gain a better understanding of how much importance I was giving to so many inconsequential memories and how I could open the gateways for more positive objects. Finally, meditation brought me in peace with my inner demons. To a greater extent, it helped me to achieve singularity in my way of thinking i.e. to channel my entire focus and concentration on a single thought at a time.
Once I was able to achieve this, I was resolute in applying the same approach in my day-to-day work. This approach not only helped me to focus on my work better but also helped to manage the welter of problems that I was surrounded with. I convinced myself that I am not a superhuman and it would be best for me to deal with superficial issues only when I have absolutely nothing else to deal with.
Have a hobby
While returning back from work every Friday evening, I try to answer one significant question. What is it that I am going to engage myself with? After a seemingly endless and lackadaisical job, I feel an immediate need of something that can boost my creativity; something that can compel me to think differently; something which can help me to channel my thoughts in a positive direction. That’s exactly what hobby is for. A hobby is something which can spark & stimulate creativity. Moreover, it happens to be the only verb in the English language that can exhilarate us emotionally and physically. Yet, people miss out on this very important aspect of life. When I connect with new people, I feel the curiosity to know what is it that they love to do and I get to hear very interesting things and related stories. Sadly, I also come across phrases like, ‘I don’t know what I like…!’, ‘I haven’t discovered it yet’ or ‘I like to sleep or take rest’. This shows that people who give out such excuses have become accustomed to and trapped inside a very single tracked & a hard-lined routine. They live their lives with a fixed mindset.
A few days ago, I was attending two days of training cum a workshop wherein the trainer asked the audience to tell everyone about their hobbies as a part of their introduction. One attendee said – “As a hobby, I like to roam around”! On being asked to elaborate, the morose gentleman said, “I just like to roam around and do nothing”. Well, even the zombies share the same hobby. They live, they eat and they die when they get shot in the head.  Well, I think that’s the area we need to work and avoid getting a bullet in the head if we are mistaken for a zombie. As I child, my only hobby was to play video games… all day long. To a certain extent, it helped me to develop some strategic thinking along with my cognitive skills. But as I grew up, I made it my responsibility and took a challenge of exposing myself to the other things as well.
Back in 2009, on 26th July, I was watching a Kargil Vijay Diwas special broadcast on one of the Indian news channels as a tribute to all martyrs of the wretched war. I was spell bounded with the stories of their martyrdom. It struck me so heavily that could feel the tears slipping down my cheeks. It was a moment when I was feeling intense emotions like never before. As soon as the show got over, I took a couple blank sheets & a pen and I went on writing for hours & ended up with four pages long poetry. Till this day, it is the most heartfelt stuff I’ve ever written. That night I had discovered a hobby that would become the most exciting part of my life. It would be wrong to say that it was easy. Rather, I made it look easy but I had to write as long as five hours at a stretch to bring out one of my most cherished creations. In next few year, during my college days, I was earning my pocket money as a part-time columnist in one of the local newspapers. I saved some money and bought myself a new, but very basic digital camera.
It was a hot afternoon of the year 2012. I noticed that there was a tiny bug sitting on my bed. I took out my camera, closed my room, put all the curtains on and captured my little friend in an absolute dark.
Tumblr media
That become one of my most memorable clicks; that was My National Geographic Moment.
I exposed myself to certain conditions, took an intense interest in exploring my abilities beyond textbooks and got myself some attention despite being horrible in mathematics. Hobbies are important and should be taken seriously.
Avoid Social Media
Social Media is a platform where you can showcase the wonderful life you are living… telling the world, that how forgiving your life really is. For some, it is just virtual space where they can hang out to have some fun, get important updates about your social circle and the world around us. For some, it is a space that makes people feel deprived, insecure and overwhelmed. But such big claims require logical backing –
1.     Social Media is highly addictive.
2.    It happens to be a major source of false information, fake news, and exaggerated opinions.
3.    A huge mental distraction.
Dr. Cal Newport rightly said in his Ted X talk, that “social media is not a fundamental 21st Century technology, rather it is something that leverages the technology for hooking up people”. He also mentioned very interesting fact, “The social media companies hire individuals called Attention Engineers, who work on the borrowed principles of the casinos in Las Vegas among other places to make their platforms as addictive as possible in order to maximize the profit from the user and the data he provides/share on such platforms”. Like Dr. Cal, I too am doing great without the social media and still have too many friends. We know what we give out to such virtual platforms but we know very less on what we end up losing in this process… and it’s called Attention. Many of us spend countless hours running up and down through our profiles in the name of entertainment, but we often lose sight of more significant duties & responsibilities that lie on our way. And we procrastinate!
The widespread engagement of the youngsters has statistically shown their declining level of motivation, self-confidence, and self-esteem. When a teenager is exposed to the virtues of falsely conveyed realities, it leaves him with the feeling of despair, loneliness, and frustration, more often due to perceived inadequacies when comparing themselves to friends. This is a perfect recipe for an implosion. It also impacts their ability to think independently. The biggest downside… our real-life conversations go downhill.
Avoiding the social media can not only help achieving the singularity in thinking, but it can also bring you out of your biggest life crisis. Just imagine the world, where Facebook won’t be reminding you of your mother’s birthday anymore. Take a moment and think about it!!
