how i make my gifs

recently i had a couple people who were interested in my gif-making process, so i thought i'd share in case anyone else is interested or wants to learn how to make them! tutorial is under the cut!

things you’ll need for this tutorial:

OBS (or some other software to capture your footage, but i find OBS works best for me)

photoshop (i’m using photoshop 2024)

optionally, the otis_inf photomode mod for bg3, which isn’t free but helps for more interesting footage!

after you have your footage recorded, open up photoshop and in the top tabs, select window > timeline to bring up the timeline at the bottom of your screen. this is where you’ll do a lot of editing for your footage. also, make sure you have your layers window open as well, which for me is hotkeyed to f7 by default.

next, we’re going to input the footage into photoshop. my footage is in .mp4 format. in the top tabs, click file > import > video frames to layers. click on the clip you want to make a gif of and hit open.

this window allows you to select the part of the footage you want to import using the sliders beneath the video. basically everything between the two sliders at the bottom is what you’ll be importing. you can change the settings to whatever works best for you, but make sure you have the “make frame animation” checkbox ticked. once you’ve selected the part of the video you want, hit okay. you’re limited to 500 frames, so keep that in mind!

once the footage loads, you should see something like the image above, with your frames in the timeline and reflected as layers in the layers panel on the right hand side. the first thing i do is adjust how quickly the frames play. 

if you look closely (red arrow), you’ll see that the frames will play every .02 seconds, which is too fast for me personally. I usually set it to .03 seconds or .04 seconds. you can do this by selecting the three little lines indicated by the green arrow and selecting all frames. then click the little down arrow next to any of the .02 numbers, click other, then you can input your custom frame delay.

now you want to select all the frames in the layers window. to do that, click the first layer, scroll up to the last layer, hold shift, then click that as well to select everything in between. you should now have all your frames and layers selected, which you can see here as they’re all highlighted.

next, click the little icon in the bottom left corner of the timeline. 

it’ll take a moment to load, but once it does you should see something like this:

now in the top tabs, select filter > convert to smart filter, and hit okay to convert it into a smart object. once that’s done, you’ll see something like this, with only one layer of animation.

congrats, you’ve made a gif! you could resize/trim it and call it a day there, but i like to do a little more editing. the first thing i’m going to do is resize the gif. pick whatever works for you, but tumblr’s dashboard is still 540 px wide, so that’s usually what i do. keep in mind that the larger your image, the larger the file size - you’re capped out at 10mb, which is always smaller than i think it’s going to be. basically, the smaller the gif, the more frames you can have.

i resize the whole gif with ctrl + alt + i. whatever you want to set it to is your choice, but i usually aim for 50% and below if i want most of the footage to be the gif, but if i'm only using part of the footage i'll obviously keep it a bit larger. i want most of astarion to be in the gif, so i resized to 40%.

from there i’ll resize the canvas with ctrl + alt + c and set the dimensions to 540 px in width and whatever i want for the length, depending on the composition of my image. you can also trim the frames down by dragging the purple bar in from either side to pinpoint the exact footage you want.

once i have the size right, i move on to coloring. there are a lot of ways you can go about doing this! 95% of the time i use adjustment layers because they’re easy and work best for me. the ones i use most frequently are highlighted below, and can be accessed quickly through the little half-shaded circle at the bottom of the layers tab. i also like to add a smart sharpening layer to crisp up some of the finer details.

after coloring and sharpening, this is my before and after result:

once you’re done with that, all that’s left to do is save (unless you want to add text, but we’ll be skipping that this time). my default hotkey for that is ctrl + alt + shift + s. you can also find this under file > export > save for web (legacy), but i find the hotkey faster. a window will pop up showing you information about your gif before you save it. 

i honestly don’t know what half of these settings do; the only thing i really pay attention to here is the size, and as long as it’s under 10mb you’re good to go. you can preview the way your gif will play, which i always do just in case there’s something i didn’t catch. hit done to save, and that’s it!

Mod Quill with some feelings tonight as I scroll the syscourse tags in the usual pits of despair with a bag of popcorn and too little free time. As always, that show I sometimes stumble upon and leave running in the background while I do laundry is on, 24/7 it seems like. The TV station really loves running that particular producer’s re-runs.

I watch for a little bit, but the main character is just… painful to watch. She constantly pushes people away in some sort of way to get her goals each episode — but the series has never ended. It just is the same exact plot line each episode. It gets spicy sometimes when there’s a recurring plot line, or a story arc. They’re all a little… circular sometimes though. She gets sassy too, but that’s few and far between nowadays.

This latest arc, she’s clearly blue.

Okay so now that I’ve rambled enough on this metaphor about Sophie-

Her latest bait for trying to hurt a clearly traumatized person is just as painful to see as it always is. Just... god forbid she do something to actually further plural acceptance. I find it so ironic how she peddles that goal to her followers — The Future is Plural, right? — while consistently and actively working against it. She consistently tries to bait people who are against her in an attempt to prop herself up higher, never realizing that all the outside world is seeing is her stomping on others. 

Blue-Bubonic is very clearly fragile, at least in my eyes. I haven’t forgotten their (pronouns unsure, but please feel free to correct me) first foray into syscourse. And yet she sees it as more acceptable to continue needling them -- and taunting that fact and touting it as a badge of honor -- in order to... do what? She's said she's painting herself as a villain, she's being the Bad Guy, but genuinely, how is that helping plurals? How is this helping further her goals?

She is quite literally attacking her own with this and further aggravating an already clearly traumatized individual. And she constantly does this. From my perspective, it must almost be fun for her, and if I remember correctly, she's admitted it's fun. She revels in it. I can't condone people who sit and just... soak in other people's misery. I have literally been working on overcoming some doubts of mine today due to harassment I received, simply because I said I thought people deserved better than literal death threats. And here she is, just... spreading negativity for negativity's sake. How is that helping anything? Isn't it just putting more negative into the world?

The worst part is, I agree with her on so many things. I have to restrain myself from reblogging her posts to my real blogs (you’re welcome, SAS, this blog isn’t real anymore, you’re free) simply so I can avoid syscourse there as much as possible. I’m also scared too. I’m scared of her. I’m scared to reblog something, both because her eyes might be on me if I do, and because the entire system community on tumblr that touches tulpamancy with a 5 foot pole is watching too. Every single action I do is not only scrutinized by her; it’s scrutinized by the community.

I just… wish there was a better way to spread positivity. I wish there were more The Plurality Of… posts, ones that aren’t written with the direct correlation of “let’s stick it to those anti-endos!�� I would love more plural headcanons with the goal, “let’s uplift all plurals!” I try to do this as much as possible, but I’m one man.

I see her with her 😈 rightful anger (and I do believe she is justified in that anger, please don’t think I am saying she shouldn’t be angry, she has gotten so much shit that was undeserved, something I regret deeply playing any part of in the past, and something I want to apologize for now again)… I see her with that anger, and I just wish there were a way to help. I wish there were a way to turn that negativity away. I’ve managed it! I’ve managed to escape it in little ways. What am I doing that’s so different? It’s not because I’m a DID system and she’s not — lord knows I’ve had my fair share of harassment for my existence. It’s not because we’re different syscourse stances — I’m as pro-endo as they come in everything but label. Hell, shocker of all shockers, I’ve come to accept I have willed-to-life alters, so I can even relate to her way of existence, at least to some degree.

And yet, I feel so different from her. And it’s sad to see someone you agree with, someone who you know is just doing their best, causing so much harm for the things you also believe in.

So I turn off the TV. And I try not to watch. But in my head, my stupid writer brain gets the monkeys and the typewriters out. And it goes to town.

In my head, I’ve written a story where I sit down with her. Sometimes it’s discord, sometimes it’s via tumblr asks back and forth, and too often to count it’s some nebulous cafe somewhere where I’m drinking hot chocolate and she’s drinking some sort of white chocolate coffee. Not sure why that’s what I imagine, but it makes sense to me.

And I just… talk to her. Like a person. We set aside syscourse entirely and have a proper sysconversation. We talk about plurality and our feelings about it; we talk about how my disorder impacts me in similar and different ways to her tulpamancy; we even discuss how this very fanfiction-like-dream is, in a way, plural in of itself, because i don’t control what she says, not willingly. I guess she got her dream, an anti-endo (in a way) with a Sophie introject (in a way).

And I laugh, and she laughs, and it’s good.

And then I go online and see the latest callout post about why Sophie is a bad person. And I sigh, because I know they never work, and I personally know how traumatizing it is to have a callout post detailing everything you’ve ever done wrong.

And then I write up this, feeling like a hypocrite. But I want her to know, I’m not trying to paint her as evil. I don’t think she is. I think she’s just… a person, trying her best, and this is me publicly saying I disagree with her methods.

I hope the show reaches a final season soon. Maybe a spinoff series will get made. Crossover episode when? I vote for Sophie Through The Looking Glass as a sequel series name.

Who was your first DA protagonist?

Iris Lavellan! I’d been relatively new to roleplaying games when I first picked up Dragon Age: Inquisition, and the ones I’d played previously focused more on exploration than character development. I was so pleasantly surprised by the opportunities to interact with the companions, and the world at large, and how often I was able to do the roleplaying part of the game. 

With only the knowledge of the Dragon Age universe that I got from the little blurb about Dalish elves in the character creator, I’d decided that Iris would probably only romance another elf. I also roleplayed her as a more antagonistic character to those around her than any other character I’d roleplayed in a video game or DND before then (tough because I mostly played the goodie two-shoes sorts!). It was an interesting challenge to play a sort of character I’d never played before, and sometimes make decisions that were in-character for her, but not the sort that are conducive to making friends with certain members of the inner circle. 

She romanced Solas, and I was captivated by him, the vibe of their relationship in general and the tragedy of it. It really hooked me and got me invested in the universe at large. I do wish I’d read the codex entries a bit more thoroughly in-game because the after-credits stinger where Solas’ true identity left me scratching my head a bit until I looked it up, but once I read the implications, I was even more hooked on their doomed love story because the notion of Iris spending a year walking with an ancient god by her side, teasing/bantering with him, and falling in love with him only made the story even better in my books.

When did you start writing fanfic?

I was 13 and wrote my very first fanfic in a notebook that I still have hidden away somewhere in my home! My first published fanfic came when I was 15. My first foray into writing fanfiction as an adult came in late 2019, but I didn’t start writing in earnest until the early days of the pandemic in 2020. The world was a scary place and I’d found myself doom scrolling, so I started writing to keep myself off social media, and then I never stopped!

How do you come up with titles?

This is where I tell on myself and admit that my method for coming up with titles is chaotic a good 90% of the time: five minutes before I hit ‘publish’, with my fic/first chapter ready to go in AO3, I sit there and ponder what the title of my fic should be. To be clear, I write a lot of long fics - 75k plus works and I always draft them nearly in-full before I start publishing. I have a plethora of time to decide on a title! 

Do I? LOL no. Sometimes, a flash of inspiration comes to me (always late at night; usually when my partner is coming to bed and wakes me up when the bedroom door opens) and I come up with a title in advance. Those are precious baby unicorns in my list of AO3 works.

where would you suggest starting with the elder scrolls? you make it look so cool but all i have played is oblivion and a little skyrim

skyrim is a good point to start, mechanics-wise i would say! if you're looking to have fun playing a game try out skyrim with some mods, there are modlists out there that offer a "vanilla+" experience so as to not make the game as drab as it is (or at least that's what i think after playing the game for years) but not suuuuper out there, though you can absolutely opt for that if you want to. it can be a fun game and a lot of people (me included) got into tes as a whole from skyrim.

i've only played the tiniest bit of oblivion so i can't say much about it, but if you're looking to get into morrowind keep in mind that it is a clunky clunky game that came out in the early aughts. going straight in might work for some people but again there are modlists out there that can help you ease in to the vvardenfell experience. i first got an idea on what morrowind is like after watching Lazy Game Reviews' video on it, so you could check that out to gauge whether or not morrowind is something you'd like to try ^_^ eso is fun and okay imo but it's an mmo so whatever entails mmos you'd want to have to deal with.

EDIT i didn't mention daggerfall and arena fsr. daggerfall has a lot of community support ever since someone made a unity port out of it, and a lot of people have been saying they enjoy it. i've tried it but i ended up just doing errands bc that was more fun to me than the main quest lolz. arena is arena. it came out in 1996. again LGR has videos for all tes games including the spinoffs and they're worth checking out. beth also made these two games free so good news if you're interested in them! tho in my beautiful world they're all free anyway.

if you're getting into tes lore uesp.net is as good of a place to start as any. check out any lore pages and go down a rabbit hole! they also have a tumblr page @/uesp if you need a little something to start your foray into tes lore. there's also subreddits but i won't lie it can get reallll badddd. i personally prefer to peruse the tags here on tumblr to stumble upon discussions for that reason.

and hfjdjchj i'm doing bethesda a lot of favor it seems bc honestly tes can be so. whack. but it all is quite engaging to me personally and a bunch of other people (who are also doing a huge favor for beth) so i hope this helps even if a little bit! also forget to add that mods are not necessary!!! i know people who play these games vanilla and they derive a lot of fun from them still. this is just how i like to have fun with the games >o<

I've played Skyrim and Oblivion, am actively playing Elder Scrolls Online (NA/PC @CaptainRele, you may send me a friend request in game with a note you're from tumblr), and it is the focus of this blog. I've never played Arena or Daggerfall (despite the url) and only barely "played" Morrowind. I've done a good amount of endgame stuff as a dps or tank main, but my heart will always belong to my characters and their stories.

My favorite trials are Cloudrest and Sunspire, my favorite dungeons are Scalecaller Peak, Stone Garden, Unhallowed Grave, and Coral Aerie, and my friends will say I have an unhealthy relationship with Blackrose Prison. I have the first 5 trial trifecras + swashbuckler supreme, four Unchained clears, and complete pithkas up to ERE. I'm that Breton Hero guy and also that Relequen guy and accept my fate as that Leramil guy.

Was a lot more active and social in tesblr a few years back but now I'm just tired and mostly here to post ESO news, my little guys, and my endgame achievements. I think you're weird and bitter and hate fun if you still scream that ESO isn't canon or act like it isn't a TES game after a decade.

Most of all, I'm really glad you liked it! That fic might not have been the most intricate vocabulary wise, but god, it drained me creativity wise, having to come up with scene after scene, second doubting myself, erasing and rewriting.

I will never underestimate storyboard writers and script makers after this. It felt like a world champion boxing match where I only managed to win by an inch. Damn that story got hands.

I had to scrab the whole Party and Identity Theft II mission stages because words wouldn't register in my brain anymore. Maybe in the future I'll go back and add them, but for now I'm clinging to my beloved short drabbles.

Then there was this whole letting it rot in my draft for months out of petty bc I thought no one was reading my stuff either way, what's the point in posting it– I got upset at the idea I spent so much effort on one story only for it to possibly end up never read by a single person.

I tried not to gloss over Thane's condition or his impending doom. I didn't want it to be a full escapism–which is ironically my ideal style–but a proper sweet goodbye, a final dance, the chance to experience life by his side a little bit more, a small extension on the deadline before the curtains fall.

And I wanted Kolyat to share the spotlight as well, he deserved so much more. Shepard was there during the confrontation, aware of it or not, you were a turning point in his life as much as his father finally stepping up to take full responsibility for his past actions.

Kolyat and Grunt being best friends came out of nowhere tbh, at that point the characters had a mind of their own. And it hit me, Kolyat grew in the hanar world, it's mostly oceans, he must have gone to swim a lot, he definitely knows about the aquatic life.

What if I give him an interest in marine biology? What if that's what he's persuing in his study in uni, hanar granted him a fully paid scholarship—another bittersweet benefit he got handed in exchange for the ruthless job his father took—while working a part-time job himself, living in a modest apartment and leading an independent life.

But Kolyat is a loner. He has no friends, no significant other, or even pets. Which causes Thane great concern, Drell society values finding a parter a lot. Maybe that's why Thane moved into his apartment to help make him feel less lonely and subtly push him into making friends. Blaming himself for Kolyat's antisocial nature.

So, with Grunt being very fascinated by sharks, a massive extrovert, a natural leader personality, zero hesitation to speak his mind and aim for what he wants. He makes the ideal friend for Kolyat!

The wedding imagery and symbolism in the casino stage are my absolute favourite details. Part of it was because I saw a mod for "wedding dresses" back when I was playing ME2 for the first time, scrolling through the mods page for a nice looking dress to use in the casino mission.

Writing Thane's distraction lines was fun ngl. One scrapped line was about him walking up to a human security guard, mentioning how he's actually dating a human and wanted to get some advice on how to woo you and act, what do humans consider romantic?

But then I remembered Garrus has a similar line, just a little more sexual and I didn't want there to be repetition.

Thane didn't seem like the type to hit on the security guards like other characters, even as mere pretend. He's too devoted to his partner for that. Half of his lines were genuine, wanting to hear about the human's family back on earth as a way to help them vent.

Like you receive an email for him stating his concern for Kolyat getting into trouble again, he's been coming home more and more late each night. He asks you to investigate, you oblige.

First stage is following his son through the Citadel stealth style, exactly like Thane Loyalty mission in ME2. But it's much shorter and ends once you see Kolyat board an unmarked spaceship.

You follow him, ofc, try to confront him. He's surprised by your presence but then expresses relief rather than acting what you'd expect from someone caught red-handed.

He explains he read in an asari research paper about a prothean technology that could possibly help repair damaged organs, or at least prevent them from degrading even further. But the research has been abandoned since the war and developing biotics took priority.

Kolyat informs you that he's been investigating and managed to get a copy of the whole unedited first draft of the published paper. Some scrapped information in it were apparently the theorised location of the prothean artifact.

He's going there to retrieve it, with or without your help...but he'd be very thankful if you came. He doesn't know how to uh...hold a gun you see, some skills don't pass down in genetics.

You can agree - Thane lives, Kolyat lives

Both of you go there and you can pick only one other teamate. Kolyat is a bit of liability, but bringing him along opens shortcuts and grants you so much lore about him, his late mother, and Thane's past self. It is Kolyat's loyalty mission in a way. You gain the hanar Marine biology branch as a war assest afterwards. You Gain Thane as a new recruit.

You agree, but demand he doesn't come along - Thane lives, Kolyat dies.

He went behind your back and boarded a different shuttle, without the Normandy abilities...the ship barely makes it into the atmosphere before the prothean technology defences shoots it down.

Thane is very visibly depressed and apathetic for the rest of the game. You gain Thane as new recruit.

Plays out the same in canon. You gain Prothean research papers as a war asset.

I imagine the mission to be your run of the million clearing out a base, etc. Maybe throwing in some stray collectors who were hiding their for old times sake? Bringing Javik and Lara gives unique dialogue, but you can't bring both unless you sacrifice Kolyat.

Bringing Javik informs you early that this technology isn't a miracle maker and doesn't magically fix organs. It simply delays the inevitable a little bit. It grants the sick a short extension on their lifespan, the pain mostly disappears, their health is restored...but it's a mirage. Nothing in reality changes much, placebo is hell of a thing.

However, despite you telling Thane about the placebo, it still takes effect. He makes the most of his time, realising he doesn't want to spend the last of his moments in a hospital bed.

But if you don't bring Javik, then you never discover that fact, which makes the eventual death scene when both of you realise his health is still deteriorating, much more painful.

What’s your favorite Sims death?

Death by Old age. I live my Sims to live a long and fulfilled life. But, playing medieval, my more common deaths are 'death by childbirth' (mod), 'death by starvation', and 'death by fire'!

Alpha CC or Maxis Match?

In my medieval game, I use alpha CC. All Maxis items are hidden, so my game is pretty much 100% CC.

Do you cheat your sims weight?

No. My sims start off either 'average' or 'overweight', and how they change is up to them in game. (Can weight even be cheated in TS2?)

Do you move objects?

All the time!

Favorite Mod?

So many! But my absolute faves are the @sunmoon-starfactory suite of sets. They add so much to historical game play, and I would never be happy playing without them!

First Expansion/Game Pack/Stuff Pack?

I purchased TS2 discs going back to 2006.... I can't even remember the first EP/SP I purchased. I do remember hanging out for the release of Seasons though, and rushing to the shop to buy it after uni classes finished for the day!

Live like aLIVE. However, the arguments for live like LIVing are pretty persuasive. You build in build move, and live in live mode!

I love the Sims I'm making for my Elder Scrolls 'hood. Current fave would have to be Wylandriah, a Bosmer elder!

Never. I'm still on the fence about that one. I do find it a little weird putting other Simselves in my game.

Red. I'm partial to gingers IRL. I do use Pooklet colours though, and my fave Pooklet reds are Explosive & Pyrotechnic.

Both! I love neighborhood decorating, building lots, worldbuilding, and playing. Currently still rebuilding my DL folder, and can't wait to get back to building and then playing my Elder Scrolls neighborhood!

Not at all. I have done a few basic recolours, and I can edit objects very primitively in SimPE. I would love to learn, but lack the time and patience!

How has your “Sims style” changed throughout your years of playing?

I started with a mish-mash of CC I found on the exchange. Then, started on LJ and fell in with An_nas and Penny Sims, and became very Maxis Match. Then, drifted toward grunge (I miss my grungified Baskerville, it was spectacular!). Then, I took a few years away from Simming and came back fully committed to historical gameplay. My Elder Scrolls 'hood is my 'anything goes' hood, with supernaturals. I also plan an Anglo-Saxon 'hood set in the 800's, and an Anglo-Norman 'hood set in the 1300's. They will both be more 'historically accurate' within the confines of the game.

Undertale: Ah yes, the funny skeleton man fandom /j /lh But seriously, this fandom isn’t all “Sans Fangirls”- just search up animations and artwork! Or, better yet- search up a full play through of the game (I recommend this order for newcomers- Neutral, Pacifist, Genocide) and let the story and gameplay do the talking! ^^

Bear update

Woah hi been a while wheheeeey!

So, update I guess. Hi, it's been like a few weeks, a month? Feels like forever, basically ya boi hasn't been in the best headspace for art, like, at all, even picking up a pen has been hard. The reason is a huge cocktail of emotions that have basically put me into mental gridlock. First, job stresses. I am attempting to find more fulfilling employment instead of my current job as a barman in a toxic location, I want to try getting into film and TV, maybe storyboarding but...well...I suck. I don't have a good portfolio and I just feel like I would be awful in the art world. I suck at commitments, really badly. Age is also an issue, I am 26, which means I am now past the pretty, cute newcomer stage of employment and into the "Oh wow he failed and is coping hard" stage of employment. Opportunities are slipping away and I have nothing to show for it, I wish I focused up in Uni, then maybe I'd be better, but at the same time I know I wouldn't, this is just who I am, someone with massive ideas and dreams, but literally 0 drive to attempt to achieve them.

Next, mentally, my head is filled with a billion things, like...I can't focus. Every day my brain is a cocktail of all these real life issues, then filled up with. "DnD, Homebrew, get a house, , move out you failure, Lackadaisy, Armored core, Cyberpunk, PLAY GAMES, NO DONT, GO TO WORK, WHAT ABOUT THIS?, DO ART, WHICH ART!?, Study, write a book! Learn to make a game! Learn blender, learn video editing, MAKE A MOD." This is only a fraction of what my mind goes through every waking moment, it's exhausting and it basically gridlocks me into just scrolling twitter and tumblr, then logging off and feeling shit that I didn't accomplish anything. Rinse and repeat for 5 years. Sorry for the bummer update, I am gonna try made something work, as much as I can. I am thinking maybe I need to see a doctor about my brain. Maybe try get some kind of medication, I don't have ADHD to my knowledge but...I dunno man. maybe I do.

Howdy what's up, here's Bethany Esda's cool hit indie game Skyrim. Some things are a WIP don't mind me

This is a sideblog for skyrim stuff, but primarily for posting my adventures in game! I use a journal mod called Take Notes! and wanted to share them with more people than just my partner, and figured that a tumblr blog would work best for the format I wanted! Nicer images are at the head of the post, journal entry afterwards, with more 'informal' images [ones with the UI in them] that are relevant placed throughout the writing, if any.

Notes are taken in character, when things happen or when resting, recounting a lot all at once. They're a bit sloppy, informal, sometimes oddly written, and cover a broad range of thoughts and events. There will be holes and missing elements everywhere. I'm not the most familiar with TES lore and patterns of speech, so it will probably read a bit more modern, but I tried my best to keep it as lore friendly as I can. He does say Fuck though, like a lot. I don't know skyrim curses sorry.

Also I download mods every time I think about the game, so lots of things visually will probably change from time to time. Sorry!

Given that it's Skyrim, there's plenty to warn for. Let's Play Etrian Odyssey III HD

Part 0: Forming Guild Azure!

Hie thee, to the Ocean City... to the Yggdrasil Labyrinth!

Hello, my name is Tallyn! This is my first attempt at a Let's Play, and I decided to do it here on Tumblr as a chaptered playthrough. Welcome to Etrian Odyssey III HD, a remake of Atlus' Nintendo DS title, Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City. Before I get started, I want to mention that this Let's Play is not sponsored. Etrian Odyssey is produced by Atlus and the Index Corporation, under Sega. This Let's Play will also feature a mod, in particular the EO3 HD Balance Patch by u/Kholdy on Reddit. This means that values have been tweaked, and the classes won't play 100% like their vanilla counterparts. Because I have some previous experience with the original EO3, this LP will be run on Expert difficulty. I will also be imagining my team as furry characters, as I am one myself.

With all that out of the way, let's begin.

The lovely Ocean City of Armoroad is a bustling burg, full of eager explorers and sailors wishing to uncover the mysteries of the mysterious labyrinth just on its outskirts.

As we step into the Explorers Guild, we're greeted by the guildmaster, who proclaims it as the only such facility in the whole city. He hands us a Guild Certificate and three scrolls, before asking us to enter our Guild's name. Being that this game has an oceanic theme to it, I'll pick the name, "Azure". After calling the name odd, the Guildmaster gets us underway recruiting folks to Guild Azure.

First up, I'm adding myself as a gryphon Hoplite. I'll be leading the party into the labyrinth and giving them the cover they so very need while traversing the dangerous maze. My goal is to keep the team alive long enough for them to hit the enemy hard and fast.

Next, in the second slot, is the ferret Arbalist Jens. He's quite confident in his ability, but it's not all that unfounded. His accuracy leaves a little to be desired; however, when he hits his mark, it's curtains.

First in the back row is the lizard Wildling, Koli. His knowledge of animals allows him to summon beasts into battle to assist and fight. Because he's been around beasts so long, he's able to accurately assess the dangers of wild animals and quickly determine how to go about fights.

Backing him up is the goat Monk Terra. Her mastery over Qi will prove invaluable in healing allies and eventually using her bare fists to punch enemies into submission.

Last is the naïve Farmer sheep, Landon. While on the weak side, he's able to cause a ruckus in battle, as well as to pick out various materials from the labyrinth. Even out of battle, he'll be helpful, as he'll know just how to navigate the labyrinth and use campsites to their full capabilities.

Now that we have the team set up and equipped to the best of our financial abilities, we're ready to set foot into the labyrinth... Almost. Before we step into the labyrinth, we must report to Via Senatus and get our first mission...

Flowdia easily guesses we're not native to Armoroad, enticed by the enigmatic Labyrinth's mystique. As such, to prove our worth and that we won't become fodder to the Labyrinth's monsters, she issues us a preliminary mission:

Our goal is to map out the first floor of the Labyrinth, and report back. But that's for us to do in the next chapter.

As for now, however, I hope you folks enjoy this, and that this turns out well. I'd love to get some feedback so I know what to do going forward. With that out of the way, I'll see you folks later.

BACK STORY

Born from a Wallachian Vampire and a French noblewoman, Raven was raised by both his parents in his father’s mansion, and he received a Patrician landlord title from his father. When he was eight, his Mother got murdered for “alleged witchcraft” by the rough justice of the local peasants.

Right after his mother died, his father became emotionally detached from him, till he got sent to his mother’s house in France. 

Adopted by his grandfather, whose pure bloodline dates centuries back, he was sent to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in England under a false identity to elude the 'Magical Being' laws in force in France, where it was extremely hard for part humans to get jobs, receive proper education, proper medical care or any sort of justice. 

Sorted into the Ravenclaw house, he was an average student awfully fascinated by the power a broad knowledge could bring - and by Dark Arts as well. 

Before dying, his grandfather named him heir of the large majority of the family fortune, seeing in a nearly-immortal grandchild the possibility to keep the family assets intact.

After his Hogwarts years, his family's wealthy background allows him to travel around the world, and study the arts of Magic from some of the greatest modern wizards. 

He was forced to change identities many times to escape the great deal of prejudice against "Half-Breeds", and he rarely remained in the same place for more than a decade. 

PRESENT

Once back in the western world, he chose the name Raven to honor the founder of his Hogwarts House, whom he always felt very close to.

After years and decades of being told and believing he was an "inferior", an "abomination", a "half-breed", Raven developed an ultimate love for himself as a kind of self-defense mechanism. He seeks to be perfect and flawless to the limit of pathetic. 

His wealthy family’s background allows him to dedicate himself to his hobbies and deviations without any concern.  

He can be stubborn with quite a childish attitude towards his "preys" and he considers "preys" anyone he can get something from: knowledge, blood, bare good company. 

Raven has been taught to keep his true nature secret and will not disclose it until necessary. Same goes with his native name or his family of origin: some secrets are meant to be kept.

Raven is a character I've created for a 30k-word FB3 fanfiction that will never see the light. Since I've traced his personality very well in my mind, why not try role-playing with him?

This is the tutorial that ate Manhattan my entire day. Ah, retirement is great. It started out as a single post and ended up as four, so if this at all interests you, grab Tempest if you don't already have it, and get a snack while you're at it. Please note that the individual parts of this tutorial don't stand alone; they assume you've read the part(s) previous to the one you're reading. I just can't put it all in one post because it'd be too many pictures for Tumblr's delicate sensibilities.

I've been sharing default presets for this mod that are easy to download and import into whatever world you want to use them in. But what if you're unhappy with something I did and want to tweak them a little but you don't know what you need to do? What if you want to make a setting of your own from scratch and you have no idea how to go about it? What if you want more detailed and realistic weather patterns than a compressed default setting can provide, details like weather changing by "month" or week if you're playing with very long seasons? To answer all that and possibly more, I decided to put together this guide, to supplement the basic Tempest information on the NRaas site. Like it says on the tin, it's comprehensive, with some pics, so I am cutting the rest. If you're interested in this sort of stuff, then read on. If you aren't, then scroll on by. :)

First of all: I'm 'Murican, so my game uses the Fahrenheit temperature scale. Don't argue with me about how Celsius is better because it's just as arbitrary as Fahrenheit is and, in my opinion, it doesn't have enough fine gradations to describe temperature on Earth without resorting to decimals. But whatever! If your game uses Celsius, the temperatures on the menu pictures throughout this guide will obviously be different from what you'll see in your own game. Tempest understands and works with both scales and will even convert the numbers for you if you plunk a preset made in a Fahrenheit game into a Celsius game, so don't worry about that.

Now, off we go.

To use and configure Tempest, you need to have Tempest installed (Duh!) and a world loaded. Click on the city hall or any computer in your world. From there, choose NRaas/Tempest. That will bring up this screen, where all the pain begins:

Some of these options are self-explanatory and just require clicking on the line in question to change, and some have sub-menus.

Export Tuning: This exports settings to an XML file that can be used by a separate tuning file for the mod, which is available for download on the NRaas site. I believe at one time this was the only way to export/import Tempest settings between saves. Nowadays, the better way to do it is to export/import the settings using NRaas Overwatch as explained here. That way, any settings you create and export are saved in your Library folder, and you can then easily import them to any save you subsequently start.

Fireplace Auto-Lighting: If the line that says NRaas.Tempest.AutoLightFireplaces:MenuName (Which should say "Auto Light Upgraded Fireplaces In Cold Weather;" I don't know if the broken text is just my game or what) is set to true (which it is by default), then the "Fireplace Auto Light Temperature" line dictates at what temperature to light such fireplaces. If I want this option enabled at all, I usually pick 50F/10C or 10 Fahrenheit degrees above the coldest winter temperature, whichever is higher. You can set it to whatever you want, of course.

Remove Fallen Leaves During Winter: False means no. True means yes. Duh. Set it to true if you can't be bothered having Sims rake leaves but you also don't want the leaves hanging around forever. It will clear leaves world-wide, not just on your active lot.

Show Debugging: Leave this false, unless you're a developer or something. Pie only knows what it does.

Suppress Insects During Winter: True means that the bug spawners (which includes nanite spawners) won't work in the winter. False means they will work. I usually use true for climates with snowy and/or freezing winters and false for climates with milder winters but, again, it's a preference thing.

Total Reset: If you click this, everything in the mod resets back to its default values, so if you screwed everything up and want to start fresh, click this. Otherwise, don't touch it. Especially not if you’ve been working on a huge preset and haven’t exported a WIP of it recently and no, I have not done this nor have I sworn like a sailor for hours after doing it.

Version: This is simply the version number of the mod that you have installed. Version 15 is the current one. If you're showing a different number on that line and you're patched to 1.67/1.69, go to the NRaas site and get and install the latest version.

OK, that's it for the easy stuff and leaves us with the options that have sub-menus: Holidays, Plants, and Weather. We'll cover Holidays and Plants in this part, but Weather is ginormous and has two entire parts of this guide all to itself.

Plants: This is the simplest one. It dictates if and how hail and snow will affect harvestable plants. The menu looks like this and is self-explanatory:

You enter the percent chance that hail will render a harvestable plant dead and/or whether or not hail or snow will "damage" any ready-to-harvest produce by setting the plant's growth stage back to mature. The chance of both is 0 by default, but you can change one or the other or both to your likings. If you want a 10 percent chance of plant death and a 20 percent chance of produce damage, just click those lines and enter those numbers on them.

Holidays: This one's main sub-menu looks like this:

Notice that there's options for each season, which look like this when you click on them:

The first line is the default holiday for the season you chose. If you click on it, you get this:

From there, you can change the day on which the holiday falls by clicking on that line. Entering a negative number counts backward from the end of the season while a positive number counts forward from the start of the season. If you enter 0, that will cancel the holiday altogether and erase the line from the menu. (So if you want no holidays in your game at all, do that for each season and voila! No more holidays! War on Christmas, suckers!) So, in this case, the -2 on the Day line means that the holiday is set to fall two days before the end of the season, and it's going to be a Love Day because it says "Spring" on the Holiday line.

If you don't want spring's default holiday to be a Love Day, you can set it to be any of the four holidays included with Seasons by clicking on that line and then making your choice from this menu that comes up:

So, you could, for example, have a Spooky Day/trick-or-treating in every season rather than the other holidays by choosing the Fall holiday instead of the spring, summer, or winter one in each of those seasons.

You can also create more than one holiday in a season or extend the default holiday by using the "Add New Entry" option. This can be useful if you're playing really long seasons or if you just want lots of holidays for whatever reason. When you click "Add New Entry," you get this:

Notice that it just duplicates the season's default holiday, so that you have two lines that are the same. Simply click on one of them to edit it as above for your new holiday. Obviously you'll want it to be on a different day than the season's original holiday.

In addition, if you wanted, say, a fall Spooky Day that lasts for three days, then in the fall season you'd add two new entries and change the days on the new entries so that you have Spooky Day for three consecutive days. It would look like this:
