Santi +/x AuDHD!reader headcanons
(could be platonic or romantic - but written as not co-habiting)
Author’s note: maybe this is too niche, idk, but sometimes I like to think about the blorbos and how they’d interact with an AuDHD reader (because that’s me, so for obvious reasons). I headcanon that Santi is particularly compatible with a neurodivergent reader, maybe because I’m being self-indulgent… but also because why on earth would he not be? So here are a few poorly written / cobbled together thoughts which have been rattling around in my brain.
PLEASE NOTE: These are written in as general a way as I could manage (which may make it slightly less fulfilling, sorry, as it’s therefore lost specificity) but please note: since everyone who is AuDHD is so completely and vastly different, I couldn’t possibly have made this “fit” everyone’s experiences. Sorry if there are things you don’t relate to, but I tried to include a few more common experiences in there so hopefully there’s at least something.
Also! If you have any hcs of your own (for any Oscar/Pedro characters) PLEASE share them because I want more ND!reader content out there! 😀🧡 (Will also consider ND!reader requests if you have them, provided I think I can do it justice!)
Warnings: brief mention of panic attacks / anxiety (Santi). Geared towards ways that Santi helps reader out - that’s where my head was at, so it is what it is. Broadly neuro-affirming, I’m not putting anyone down for any traits ofc, even if they do cause challenges sometimes! Hope that makes sense!
Santi is so organised and tidy. He can make a plan and execute it with great attention to detail (have you seen that storage locker?!). If you struggle to stay organised and keep the house tidy etc., Santiago will have no issue helping you out, whether it’s coming up with a routine, creating a system, or simply doing a quick blitz anytime he’s over at your house. He finds it sorta therapeutic anyway, and you never feel like he’s doing it because he judges you or the condition of your place. It’s just wired into him to find order. Hell, sometimes if you lose something around the place you call him to see if HE can remember where he last saw it, and usually he can. That military routine never really left him, even all those years later, so he’s a great constant for modelling structure!
Santi will FaceTime you to body-double whatever chores you want to complete. For example; you have a Wednesday evening tradition to call each other while you each fold the laundry, or do whatever else you need to get done. You do get things done, and he makes you laugh the whole time too. He sticks to this routine as much as he can, no matter what else he has going on, or which country he is in. He loves this quality time with you, and to him it’s just a bonus that it helps you out.
Running late to meet him? He’s learned to bring a book and a flask of coffee along. He’ll wait, you’re worth it.
Sensitive to noise? Santi can’t relate fully, but he knows what it’s like for some sounds to instil negative effects. (See how this veteran is feeling around the fireworks at 4th July and you’ll get it.) He will respect your need for quiet when you need it. Besides, he’s slowed down a lot since his younger years and more and more enjoys the little things like curling up and reading a book. That said, if you want some stimulation and fancy hitting a dive bar with blasting music, or wanna dance in the kitchen, he can also be convinced. He has the range to accommodate all of your sensory preferences, your routines and your impulsive ideas, and he’ll gladly follow your flow.
He’s a magician at regulating you. This man is observant and can read people like nobody’s business, so he knows when you’re getting overstimulated or overwhelmed - often before anyone else does. When he sees it happen he’s happy to help you calm your nervous system however you need. Whether that’s a soft / firm hug, distracting you by talking to you in his soothing voice, working-out with you, letting you fidget with him - his hands, bracelets, whatever - or borrowing a texture of his, like playing with his soft curls.
Better believe this guy sends you texts throughout the day to check that you’ve eaten / drank water.
If you’re running late to an appointment and he’s free he will 100% drive you.
He loves to cook and always “accidentally” makes extra, so that you always have a stock of tasty “emergency” meals in your freezer for days when you don’t have the energy / functioning to cook.
Don’t wanna make the phone call? Santi will do it for you. Besides, he can charm the socks off of anyone so it’s probably best he deals with it anyway.
Santi is charming but he also has the ability to be straight down the line in his communication, especially with you as he trusts you so much. That means you rarely have to guess what he’s thinking or feeling about any particular thing. He lays it out for you and that’s super helpful. Of course, he can be closed off about his more complex, deeper emotions, but that’s something you seem to bring out of him - at least, in ways that no-one else has managed. You’ve had plenty of deep heart-to-hearts with the man and you know you can count on each other in a pinch, whether you need comfort or to vent about something you have going on.
Santi experiences panic attacks and anxiety and can relate to some of the ways you also struggle. He gets that people’s brains work in different ways and he’s far from judgemental about that. You’ve never once made him feel lesser when he’s been struggling and he will NEVER do that to you either.
Your sense of humour cracks him up no end.
He loves that you can be “blunt” / direct / a little “too honest”. He always knows where he stands with you, and for someone as (secretly) insecure as Santi that’s no small thing.
If you indicate you are burnt-out… he BELIEVES you. No questions asked - except for what you need, of course.
Forgotten something? Santi has started carrying spares. This man is nothing if not prepared, and now that simply extends to you. Whatever day-to-day items you carry (or often lose) he makes a mental note of the item and brand and buys multiple - for his place, his truck, wherever.
This man has social skills galore, so you can lean on him at parties, or in whatever situation if you’re feeling uncomfy or want a “way in” to a conversation. You can even leave him to do all the talking if you like, though of course he will enable you to have the floor if he can see that you want it. On the flip side, if you talk a lot, he is absolutely listening and rapt with whatever you are coming out with.
Don’t always look him in the eye? That’s okay. The man is so beautiful he’s used to people not being able to stare directly at him 😝 Besides, he finds you and your mannerisms completely charming.
He’s deadly, sure, but overall he’s actually quite a calm and not hugely reactive person - especially in a crisis. That can be so helpful in balancing you out on some occasions where you may react in a heightened way, or be emotional or worried / catastrophising about something. Despite his ability to skip town at the drop of a hat - before deciding to stick around - he does have the ability to be pretty steady and stable and sometimes that’s what you need.
He appreciates you and everything you do for him. He helps you out sometimes but you never feel “in his debt”. He is endlessly praising all of your amazing strengths and attributes (amidst some fond teasing ofc) and appreciates all that you are as well as all you do for him, and he couldn’t ask for a better person to have in his corner.

Ducktales: Woo-oo! Review! or From the Top
Tumblr media
Hello all you happy people! And to those of you just joining this blog, welcome I review ducks, other animated shows and comics... and today’s review is special for me. For a number of reasons. For starters it’s a reminder how far i’ve come. See I always wanted to be a reviewer, ever since high school when a friend showed me a certain online reviewer whose now dead to me, and opened me up to a world of much better reviewers who i’m still fans of to this day, and ones who came after them , and after that and so on and so on. I so badly wanted a community to belong to I struggled to be a youtube reviewer but frankly lacked the talent or self confidence back then to try, so my attempts over the decade were a series of stops and starts. Of me starting to find my niche writing only to stop because I hated myself so much, and still struggle with that, i’d tell myself I could never do it, I wasn’t good enough, I wasn’t funny enough and no one cared. I kept shutting myself down AGAIN AND AGAIN, for far too long.
But that all changed a year ago next month: I’d long been a fan of the Ducktales Reboot. I was caustiously optimistic when it was announced. The optimism came from a deep abiding love of scrooge as a character despite not having dove into his comics that deep, I didn’t have an easy way at the time, thanks to life and times and what comics I had read, and was excited to see a fresh reboot closer to the comics with my eternal boy Donald Duck back in the main character. The caution.. came from the fact that at the time we’d gotten a string of bad to medicore reboots: Teen Titans GO, Powerpuff Girl, and Ben 10 which started pretty meh but has turned into alirght from some of the later episodes I saw. I wanted to be hyped to all hell but I had no proof this wasn’t going to be another dumbed down reboot. Then comic con came, the first teaser poster dropped, and my skepticism died.
Tumblr media
It was perfect: a barksian art style with it’s own twists! Donald full on display! And best of all the triplets FINALLY had not only unique outfits but personalities! I’ve long went on in my reviews about how much that annoyed me and while it worked for the barks comics ever since then it’s just felt like a waste to have three characters there.. and not even the SLIGHTEST difference.
My anticipation only grew with the full trailer, the promo posters as more and more info showed how good this series would be, how unique it’d be, and how much tw as taking what made the comics great, giving us a better distalation of that while still being very much it’s own beast. And once this episode dropped.. that faith was unfounded. Woo-oo! is without hyperbole, one of the best pilots i’ve seen, one that introduced the entire main cast perfectly, gets the series tone and mission statment out just right and in general set the stage for one of the best shows of the 2010′s (and 2020′s, even if it only lasted a year and some change). Wheras Teen Titans GO actively tried to take a dump on it’s source material, they thankfully have stopped that but it dosent’ make those early years any less grating, Ducktales was a breath of fresh air that honored the past while making i’ts own future. I tried talking about it but it was all in other failed attempts at reviewing: solo podcasts, my breif second video review career.. stuff no one rightly cared about and I just couldn’t get the hang of.
So this is where we loop back to last year: I decided to finally try and cover it one more time, not realizing this would be my last chance as it came out anyway, and since I was doing text reviews but my output had slid in the new year, I decided to review Season 3 as it came out. If it bottomed out I could always stop.... and I just never did. I kept going, eventually finding new fans, a patreon (The other one’s an old friend of mine), and not only got paid doing what I love.. but found some peace.  I reviewed other shows as they came out, covered things i’d wanted to cover for years like life and times, scott pilgrim and x-men,. I covered other shows as they came out, found people willing to talk over my opinions and found my niche at long last.
So that’s why the long speech folks: After almost a year of reviewing i’m properly covering the start of something that made me happier than I had been in a long time and gave me hope during one of the worst periods of ALL our lives. Something i’ve wanted to cover since I finally got started last year, and something truly amazing. So i’d be honored if you’d join me under the cut as I talk about the genesis of one of the best series Disney has ever put out.
Tumblr media
Behind the Scenes Stuff:  Most details I could find were sparse. it took going back to the first month the show came out and looking at a LOT of unrelated questions to finally find out Frank and Matt outright pitched the show. This dosen’t suprise me as both are huge ducktales fans with Matt having drawn his own duck comics as a kid and Frank taking it an extra mile having sang the theme song in his first grade talent show, worked it into his vows and got his first daughter’s first word to be “Woo-oo”. It’s very clear this show as a labor of love for them something they dreamed of Disney made possible.
Otherwise I don’t have much on the genisis of the show: It was in the earliest ideas going to be a revivial but Frank and Matt both decided against it , deciding it’d be unfair to expect kids from 30 years after the original to know the source material, and instead just starting it over outright, which was the right call especailly with Alan Young’s passing.
Design wise I found quite a bit of concept art thanks to one website, and it’s incredibly intresting. This is why i’ve really gotten into art books: I like seeing this early stuff what characters used to be, figuring out or outright hearing from the creators mouths why they changed it that sort of thing.
Tumblr media
Starting off we have some early designs for Donald, with him wearing the sailor suit as a kid but his Quackshot outfit as an adult, something I honestly wish they’d kept but get why they changed it: The iconic sailor suit both helps contrast him with della and fits his reluctance to adventure in season 1 more. I still wish that they worked the Quackshot outfit in somewhere, but they worked in so damn much, it’s hard to complain> Though I probably will make a list of “things I wished they’d worked” in at some point and i’d be lying inf I siad my mind wasn’t currently turning the gears to figure out how to work this into a fanfic. Oohhh maybe as Dewey’s outfit as an adult but blue, obviously.
Tumblr media
Next we have Donald settled more into his final apperance as well as the boy’s first outfits.  As you can tell from both of these the show originally went more with the classic art style before getting the one we’re familiar with now, one I love by the way and was made to combine a classic cartoon style with the visual of the comics. Donald originally had his classic outfit before they transitioned to the more barks style one, a good call.
The interesting bit though is obviously the boys original outfits which i’m honestly bummed didn’t make it for Huey and Louie, not so much Dewey minus the visor. I do get the changes though: The hoodie Dewey had fit WAY beter on Louie, and the lumberjack shirt didn’t quite fit the nerdier huey. Still look nice. Dewey’s is okay, but only the visor is something I really gregret them removing same with louie’s fedora. It would’ve been neat ot keep the hat thing, but have each hat be unique. Likely they simplified things to make animation easier and simply removed the hats for some reason, but it’s nice ot see these more detailed original drafts and it is VERY interesting to find that differentiating the triplets was something planned from the earliest concept art. Though given Matt and Frank said in interviews they wanted a more natural family feel, it’s not a huge surprise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scrooge like everyone BUT the boys thus far, naturally also had his original outfit at first, but like he ended up doing in the series rotated a bit, if not as much in the final product. We also see a protoype for his final design, the old coat but with a jacket over it in the last image. I also notice Donald seemed a lot more like his old comics self in the concept art with quackshot!donald.
Tumblr media
Like everyone else, Webby and Launchapd were originally their 87 deisgns, though Launchpad’s slightly diffrent jacket and green scarf were changed from the start. Webby is the closest to her 87 design, and as shown in the previous Lena concept art from my “Spies Like Us and Dime after Dime” double feature, she still had her new personality. More on that in a bit.
Tumblr media
Finally we have Flintheart, whose design is a bit diffrent from 87: He was a chub from day one it appears, though they’d exagerate it, and his beard was a bit longer at first like his other incarnations.
Beakly is largely unchanged form 87, only given a coat, which would gradually be mofidied, much liekt he boys into her current outfit.
As you can tell Beakly, Webby and Launchpad were all there from day one as they wanted them from the original ducktales just updated.
Production wise they wanted to go handrawn, chose the style they did to have something close to the comics that felt classicly aniamteda t the same time, I feel they succeeded and wanted a show that felt like the original. I do think this show has it’s own feel but it does feel ducktales. I badly hope for an artbook at some point though as this show probably hada  LOT more intresting concept art. Seriously Disney I will PAY YOU to look at your neat art. Please.
So they created a fully formed world and put the characters in it, wanting it to feel like the world had existed before and had throughly been explored and letting our young heroes be the watson to Donald and Scrooge’s holmes.
Finally Della was indeed part of the initial pitch and a core idea from day one as every family has secrets and Della felt like one that had been lurking around the fringes of the story for 80 years. The rest of the production stuff i’ll weave in as we go but first one last stop, the STELLAR voice cast, none of whom outsideo f Tony i’ve talked about before sooooo...
The All Star Cast
The casting was outstanding here, with Matt admitting the cast brought a LOT to the characters, especially Ben Schwartz whose taken on Dewey was so unique and intresting they actually rewrote some of his dialouge for the pilot to fit this version better. This is far and away one of the best casts in western animation, most coming from comedy backgrounds and one or two coming from a voice acting background, but all bringing their absolute best. And since our main 8 are all in the pilot let’s run them down along with Keith Ferguson shall we?
Playing everyone’s faviorite billionare scotsman  and one of the very few to ever do so, we have David Fucking Tennant. David was their “First and only choice” and for good reason: David is a talented actor with a MASSIVE amount of stage, tv and audio drama credits. His biggest and best known role is playing the 10th Doctor on Doctor Who, which while not my faviorite (That’d be matt smith, as he’s both the one I came in on and hte one who got me hooked) he’s still  VERY close second and damn talented and I need to watch more of his tenure. Outside of that just to condense it to his ongoing roles on stuff and bigger roles: Filmwise he’s had starring roles in the Fright Night remake, You, Me and Him, Fish Without Bicycles and Bad Samartains, and is set to do a voice for the upcoming Loud House Movie, which excites me to no end.
TV wise where most of his roles have been he got his first big starring role on the Telly with the BBC Mini series Taking Over the Asylum in the late 90′s. He’d go on to make a career out of doing mini’s for a while, also taking part in He Knew He Was Right, The Quatermass Experiment Remake, Casanova, Secret Smile.. and Blackpool. I saved Blackpool for last before we move into the Who era as if you’ve never heard of it.. it’s REALY fucking weird. It’s a jukebox musical about a man who wants to make Blackpool, a real city, into the new vegas and Tennat plays a cop investigating a case around the guy and also trying to get with his wife because they used to date and because our lead is philandering jackass. That’s already kinda nuts.. but then you get to the fact the songs are sung OVER the original songs instead of making a new version of them. It’s surreal to be sure but if you can find it it’s worth it for the handful of good numbers and how weird it looks and you can find clips of the songs on youtube if your intrested. Here’s a starter.
youtube
Your also welcome. He’d go on to play Detective Alec Hardy in Broadchurch to critical aclaim as well as be a part of it’s short lived american remake, would play the Fugitoid in tmnt 2007, Kilgrave in Jessica Jones, one of his few post who roles i’ve seen or heard besides Scrooge and easily some of his best work he NAILS that purple bastard perfectly, would make his own show Staged about a fictional version of himself putting on a Stage play that’s still ongoing, and is currently , along with Ducktales as it wraps up, the voice of Lord Commander on Final Space, with the character returning this season judging by the trailers to fan delight and terror. He’s a VERY talented actor and voice actor and I do hope he goes on to do more and more voice work in years to come as, with his background in radio, he was born for it.
He was also born for this roll, playing Scrooge perfectly and easily matching Alan Young in quality, not a small feat and i’ts VERY obvious why he was their one and only choice.
Next up is another legend, Tony Anselmo who we’ve talked about before when I covered legend of the Three Cablleros: He’s been Donald’s voice since shortly before Ducktales, hasn’t done much else but given he’s THE voice for the character and this show let him show off one hell of a range with teh voice, he dosen’t really need other credits. The man is a treasure and I fear loosing him one day and fear for whoever replaces him as they have a LOT to live up to.
Getting into the triplets, we’re going by age so starting off we have Huey, voiced by Danny Pudi. Like most of this cast aside from Toks Ogladyve and Beck Bennet (Who I probably HAD seen on SNL but didn’t really know or look out for him on there till after Ducktales), I not only knew Danny but was a huge fan of his going in. This is due to his breakout role on the glorious sitcom Community, which sadly only had a handful of i’ts cast show up on this show. I mean you got Lin Manuel Miranda I’m sure Donald Glover would’ve said yes too. He grew up with Ducktales. Regardless his role as meta guy Abed was easily the best of the cast on that show, with Glover as troy a very close second and the two working at their best as a duo. Outside of that he’s had a few roles being a regular on Powerless, which I forgot existed and currently on Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet, and shockingly hasn’t done a ton of voice work. And given his performance as huey was one of the best parts of this show he REALLY, REALLY SHOULD. Please Danny. He’s also a loving husband, father and surprisingly a marathon runner. Never would’ve guessed.
Next up is SNL Alumn of 9 years, Bobby Monynihan. Bobby is naturally best known for that, my faviorite role of his being Ass Dan. That’s right bitch you know he’s going to live fore..
ASS DAN 1981-2021
He’ll be back. Outside of SNL he’s done a bunch of minor roles. He’s currently on the tragically mediocre sitcom Mr. Mayor, and voiced Panda on We Bare Bears. Hopefully he keeps up the good work as he deserves better than he’s gotten and Ducktales proves it.
Finally for the triplets we have a rising star in voice acting, Ben Schrwartz. At the time Ducktales launched, I was a fan of his from his roll on parks and Rec as Jen Ralphio, aka older scummier Dewey.
youtube
Outside of his historic recurring role here he played a main role on House of Lies, a show I need to go back to, and has done other live action rolls but has REALLY hit his stride in voice acting. He started with voicing Randy Cunningham in Randy Cunningham 9th grade ninja and since then has hit the ground running: He was Rutabega on Bojack, Josh on Bob’s Burgers, and went on to complete the trifecta of blue nostalgic characters after voicing dewey by voicing Leo in Rise of the TMNT (and having one of the most unique and intresting versions of the character to play) and reprised the roll for the upcoming film. And of course he hit it HUGE by playing Sonic in the suprsingly fantastic Sonic the Hedgehog movie, and will do so again for the sequel and might even take up the roll for the games now Roger Craig Smith has retired. We shall see. Point is this guy’s at the top of his game and Dewey is part of that. Like with his brothers I can’t picture anyone else playing him.
Rounding out the kids is Webby, played by the wonderous Kate Micucci. Kate is a lovely talented woman who mostly showed up in smaller parts, was part of the musical duo garfunkel and oates which even got their own tv show, and is currently a fairly prolific voice actor with this being her best known roll. I also had a bit of a crush on her once can you tell? Regardless besides absolutely nailing it as Webby she’s voiced Julie Kane in the crimnally short and even more crimnally not on Disney+ Motorcity, “Irma” in the 2012 TMNT cartoon, and the fact that “Irma” is in quotes should tell you how big a waste I felt it was having her NOT actually be Irma, despite Kate’s massive talent, the fact that Irma hadn’t been in anything since the 87 cartoon, and the fact that for added “Fuck you audience points” her krang form was voiced by Gilbert Godfried, who I love but whose casting feels like they wanted to make the twist as grating as possible. Good job there.
Anyways her second biggest voice gig was as Sadie on Steven Universe, which took WAY too long to show off her absolutely tremendous singing voice. She started voicing Velma Dinkley in the mid-2010′s and has since, voiced Milo’s sister Sarah on Milo Murphy’s Law, Dr. Fox on Unikitty, and most recently voiced a sentient present on close enough who did this.
Tumblr media
So yeah quite the career and like Ben she probably has a long and storied career in Voice Acting ahead.
Next up is Beck Bennet as everyone’s friend Launchpad where he excels. He’s best known as a castmember on SNL outside of this, and shockingly hasn’t done a ton of voice work. The only other time i’ve caught him is in the same season of Close Enough as Luc, aka dude-bro satan. But like eveyrone else here who hasn’t done a lot of voice work so far or has been more selective I defintely hope he keeps going with it as he’s amazing. He and Ben will be co-starring on MODOK in May so i’m excited for that.
Last up for the main cast is Beakly, voiced by  Toks Olagundoye, who I hadn’t heard of before this show and hasn’t done a lot outside of the two season sitcom the neighbors, the aliens one not the really terrible looking one, and a stint on Castle, but like everyone here deserves much more and if Beakly is any indication, really should stick with voice acting.
Last up is Keith Ferguson as only he could as FLINTHEART GLOMGOLD, whose a staple in the voice acting community ever since 2000, and has had a TON of roles some of which I was unaware with him. Given Frank worked with him on Wonder Over Yonder, where he voiced Lord Hater to perfection, the two clearly have a close working relationship. He also has a close working relationship with Wonder creator Craig McCracken and has worked on all of his post-powerpuff girls show, voicing Bloo as his first major role, something I never would’ve guessed, and currently voicing Papa G on Kid Cosmic.
Outside of Craig and Frank, he played both Karate Kid and Nemisis Kid on Legion of Super Heroes (Which really needs to come to HBO Max), Deputy Durland on Gravity Falls,  and Thunderbolt Ross on Avengers Earth’s Mighteist Heroes. He’s damn good and deserves the world for Glomgold alone and i’m glad Craig rung him up again as so far through my watch of Kid Cosmic he’s great.
So with our cast in place, our past in place and you all likely ready to get on with it already let’s dive into the episode:
THE EPISODE: Part one Woo-Ooo!
We begin with a shot of a seagull flying overseagulls, a nice way to establish how this world works and how it bends expectations. They’d have to wait till season 3 to get a duck next to ducks but given that gag is one of the best of the series, it was worth it.
Inside a house boat we meet Donald, Huey and Louie and get a sense of their personalities: Donald is panicked trying to get to a job interview and insists the boys wear life vests, showing his overprotectiveness and responsibility exclusive to this version. Louie stresses that Donald wear a suit instead of his normal clothes to properly impress the interviewer, showing his skill at people reading and manipulation, and Huey is making a nice, if messy, breakfast with a heartwarming message showing his heart and dedication. After finding out said Babysitter was sent to the wrong address, the boys TRY to hustle him out to stay alone.. only for Dewey to blow the scheme by starting the boat too early, letting Donald know he’s been had. Huey’s attempt to lie about it is of course the classic “Who’s Dewey?” Dewey’s caught wiring the boat and Donald throws them in the car, with Donald livid and the boys upset as their chafing at his constant overprotectiveness.
Both sides aren’t wrong. tThe boys DID do something reckless, putting an old woman in the desert and risking their home just to go on a joyride. What they did was wrong.. but the boys AREN’T wrong for getting annoyed that he won’t let them DO anything and overly hovering over them when they CAN handle themselves as we’ll see. WE now know why: he lost their mother and his sister to her and scrooge’s recklesness. While he got therapy for his anger it’s clear he never properly got help about Della, and thus overcompensates by trying to keep what he has left of her alive. He means well.. but to them it comes off as him being manically overprotective with no good reason. They get into trouble because it’s the only way to DO anything away from him. He’s trying so hard not to loose them he almost has by the time hte series starts, and it’s telling that when they get context in Last Crash, they appricate him more from then on. They do love him, but their frustration is understandable even if what their doing is pretty damn stupid. But their also 10 and Donald’s the grown adult in therapy who should’ve dealt with this or tried to at least by now.
So with no other options Donald sets a course for McDuck manor which excites the boys who have heard of Scrooge McDuck and his exploits, each rattling off something they heard him do that fits their personality (Dewey picks him fighting a stone monster, Huey picks him uncovering a hoax and Louie picks his swimming in money. ) As Donald tries to get them to simmer down, they wonder what he’s up to
He’s up toooo.. depression. He’s in a room with his board, watching them with utter hate and sadness as they talk about cutting the invention and aviation departments. This scene plays ENTIRELY differently after the final two episodes of the season. Before it still plays well as Scrooge clearly resenting being stuck in a boring board meeting, having lost everything that made him him and just having lost his passion for life. Now? It plays as a man utterly disdainful of the men who made him give up on his daughter. While as far as he knows they did it to save his employees from his company collapsing, we know better now... and seriously where IS the rest of the board they just vanished after the Season 3 premiere.
Tumblr media
I don’t mind only one being fleshed out, unlike the triplets we only NEED the one I mind that they just never explained it and still haven’t. Hopefully the finale will.
But back on the plot, it now plays as Scooge just full of hatred for them, knowing they had to do what they did, even if they weren’t emebzlling but still hating them and himself. He’s likely not even paying attention anymore because he just dosen’t CARE: he has all the money int he world.. and it couldn’t bring him his daughter back. As he sadly puts the coins he was fiddling with back and says see you tommorow he can’t even close the vault without a struggle. As we’ll see later the strength never left, it’s not like he stopped execrising.. but he has nothing left to fight for. Nothing left to care about. He could adventure agian so far.. but without Della or Donald, as we’d learn two seasons later the reason he enjoyed it again... what’s the point? He has nothing left except his money.
This is also a nice parallel to the final Chapter of LIfe and Times. I always felt the first half of woo-ooo was a spiritual adaptation of chapter 12 of that: Scrooge meets the boys for the first time and with their help, and Donalds in the story< Webby and Launchpad here, he regains his passion and more importantly his family after driving them away> The how is very different: he did in life and times due to sinking to his lowest point morally, then cruelly dismissing his family when they tried to welcome him home and bury the hatchet despite what he’d done. Here.. he made a HORRIBLE mistake, one that wasn’t entirely on him but still cost him everything and spent the decade instead of stewing or making more money trying desperately to undo it. The end result is the same, a dried out husk of a man with nothing left to loose and no will to gain anything.
This husk has launchpad though whose introduced as his driver and while good with subs and planes.. isn’t great on the road. After that though Donald pulls up hoping to drop the kids off before Scrooge arrives. Naturally this being a cartoon and Donald having tempted fate with that Scrooge shows up telling him to jettison that Jallopy at once. And finding out who it is, apart from asking how Donald is and Donald doing the same, dosen’t sway him. The boys however freak out after finding out Scrooge is Donald’s and there uncle, with my faivriote bit of that being Dewey exiting the car via a window and rolling across the roof back in. Amazing bit of animation. Wish I had a gif of that.
Donald makes the situation plane and angry and asks “Can you do that without LOOSING THEM”. And scrooge is so painfully disarmed by his reminder of his past mistakes and the fact his surrogate son still resents him, that he agrees before realizing “Shit I have to watch children now don’t I” as Donald drives off. As you probably guessed, this is another scene that plays differently in hindsight, if not by much: It still plays as two men too stubborn and bitter to reconcile.. but now we know the why behind both their rages it feels even sadder. They both lost the person they cared about most but as it sadly happens in real life both have dug in their heels to reconcile, both feeling their right when neither completely is. While Donald was right to be upset at scrooge and della for what happened, and is mostly taking it out on scrooge because he’s the one left... he’s held onto his anger for 10 years instead of going to help when he’s unemployed, living in a dilapidated houseboat and trying ot raise three children alone and could’ve used what help scrooge would give. Scrooge is right to be upset that Donald is just selectively ignoring everything he’s done to save Della, but is too stubborn and prideful to apologize for what he DID do wrong and feels that’s enough to make up for it when , while it is enough that donald should forgive him, still dosen’t mean he dosen’t have a lot to apologize for. Both are just too angry and too much alike, as much as it woudln’t seem so, to settle with each other and see too much of what they lost.
So the kids follow Scrooge.. who forgets to open the door, and Beakly lets them in. It’s a nice subtle bit. After some silence, Bentina TRIES to get her old friend and now employer to talk to them, but he naturally refuses and they do the talking, asking tons of questions.. and Dewey ends the conversation by accidently pressing the “imply he USED to be something rather than is something right now “ button
Tumblr media
So Scrooge throws them in the twins old room, and Beakly gives them some marbles. You will give them b ack they will be counted. But another subtle touch I missed the first time is there... her sad look. She clearly doesn’t want to do this, but she has to play this carefully or else he might get mad and fire her on the spur of the moment. He’d obviously hire her back, where else is he going to get an ex spy who will both clean for him AND be his bodyguard and security. It’s a very small pool. Mostly because Beakly probably killed most of the other people who’d of fit that description during her spy days.
Scrooge meanwhile is still rattled by Dewey’s statment, wondering if he really is a “used to be” instead of a “never left”. The fire is starting to spark again.. he just needs more kindling. And more kin.
Meanwhile Louie and Huey marvel at Dewey’s “Brilliant’ breakout plan: hit the door knob with the sack of marbles til lit breaks. To be fair, they’ve known dewey as long as they’ve been alive and even by season 3 after he’s taken several levels in badass and cunning.. he still crashed a plane because his brother well-meaningly called him basic, and thought being nearly sacrificed the most times was an accomplishment. This is the best he could do and you all know it. It also works, so they can’t fault him for that... though he’s quickly kidnapped as are they. They wake up after the commerical break in a room with pure darkness, hung from the celing with a mystery person asking who they are and who they work for before Louie calls out for “uncle scrooge”... so she claps the lights back on and..
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well close. But it is Webby, who cuts them down, fangirls over meeting the nephews and asks who the evil triplet is. They all point to Louie who shrugs it off. I mean it was funny enough the first time but at this point I know he’s running several fradulent charites, almost all scamming his uncle. He’s earned that title. Webby puts them on the big board and then when asked they find out she’s Webby, her granny Beakly is housekeeper.  She then asks the big questons “Are we friends now?” “If we say yes will you let us live?” “Ha good one new best friend”
She then explains she dosen’t get to leave or anything even eat a hamburger. The boys are moved by this and Louie asks what she does for fun. She leads them to the vents and while Huey and Louie are a bit relcutant, Dewey naturally goes first pointing out it’s better than the marble room. They agree and are on their way.
Okay unpinning that pin, the crew conciously updated Webby and Beakly as neither really had a lot of purpose in the original. It was also to conciously add more actiony females to the main family lineup, as both creators, both being fathers, preferred someone their daughters could look up to and would enjoy watching. Not someone perfect but someone intresting instead of someone who often got Kidnapped and whose main charactrisitcs were “Sweet and GIRL STEROTYPE” So cleverly they KEPT her being girly, having a skirt, liking ponies. .but also gave her all the training and skill of one Cassandra Cain, a sheltered background and an adorable personality that kept the sweetness but added her probably having killed a man at some point. It worked as Webby is one of the best parts of the show.
Likewise Beakly was upgraded from fuddy duddy housekeeper, to badass former secret agent whose also a housekeeper, and bodyguard and confidant to scrooge. Demonstrated by her talk with him as he tries to put on his diving suit and go after the jewel of atlantis, having spotted the signs to go after it in the paper.. and wanting to prove a child wrong. Beakly points out the flaws in this, and tries to get him to connect to his family. Having lost hers, it’s easy to see why.. though the how’s a mystery.. for now i’m guess. We’ll see in the finale. But she’s Scrooge’s concisence and the one who can easiest reign him in, to the point two episodes directly have our heroes have to NOT call her or else the plot was end, but have that worked into the plot so it works. She’s the calm in his storm and hte one person he needs more than anyone else even if he dosen’t always realize it. He calls family “nothing but trouble” just as Dewey passes overhead.
Tumblr media
So naturally as Webby shows off Scrooge’s old treasures in a mysterious room, while the other Siblings are rightfully impressed, Dewey dismisses it as “fake” because he’s being a little shit, and they agree after seeing Donald, not knowing his reputation. The cutaway to him struggling with a stapler does not help> it’s only when Webby accidnetly uneleashes Captain Peghook, a vengeful ghost after scrooge, who gets his hand on a ghostly sword do they realize this time the monsters are real. Huey also accidently wakes up Manny, the headless manhorse!
Tumblr media
Things somehow get WORSE as Scrooge finds them.. but is in no state to argue and as our heroes duck and Huey tries to divise a plan.. Scrooge get’s his spark back once agian.. it’s starting to become an ember now... and he charges in despite Dewey’s cries of “No come back your old!”. It then gets VERY badass Scrooge: Oi! Beastie! What's it gonna take to shuffle you off to the afterlife? Captain Peg-Hook: The head of Scrooge McDuck! Scrooge: [cracks his neck, flips his cane around to wield like a sword] Would you settle for his hat?
Now that is how you show how badass Scrooge is in a few lines and gestures. HE proceeds to take both out, as they’ve now teamed up, easily, tricking peghook into cutting off the head of a statue of him in the area, throwinng it at him and finsihing the ghosts buisnesss (”I should’ve been more specifiiiicccccc”) and then giving Manny the head, earning him a loyal employee for life. So our days saved, the kids have faith.. and Scrooge is still pissed. He also reveals this isn’t a treasure room but the garage in what’s easily the best gag of the first half, possibly the whole special but one iconic moment is very close in that one. Webby concedes what about the stack of old magazines or the hose or.. okay he’s probably right. He berates them only for the kids to fire back, pointing out he threw them in a room, they just wanted to spend time with him... but it’s only Dewey throwing his words back in his face that pisses him off. Scrooge bellows at them to get out, clearly having internalized everything with donald into rage and trying to justify pushing eveyrone away instead of working at it... but this dosen’t have time to actually work, nor would Beakly actually throw three children out on the curb, as he hits a mystic gong.. the third time it’s been hit. And after realizing it’s already been hit twice Scrooge is faced with Pixu, the gold hutning dragon! And guess who has a giant bin of it wanting to snack on? Scrooge naturally climbs on the thing and the kids naturally want to follow, with Webby getting her first development by proudly announcing “I’m going to eat a hamburger” then explains the metaphor. They just need a pilto.. and as Launchpad has been saying but I forgot to add in “I’m a pilot”
So we get a GORGEOUS bit of Scrooge riding the dragon over the city, getting banged up as he does before finally being thrown off.. only for the kids to catch him with the planes help and try and come up with a plan. Scrooge overcomes his anger at them not staying put, especailly since Webby brings up the right weakness: as a wise man once said...
Tumblr media
So they need some.. like say the Medusa Gauntlet Scrooge had in the garage.. that Louie naturally stole. Huey and Webby eyeroll him but they have what they need.. and Huey brought the hose and quickly comes up with a plan, tying scrooge in, and swinging him to Pixu. The kids hold on tight, Dewey calls his family awesome and our heroes win the day as Scrooge turns the dragon to stone, slips and falls.. and then GRACEFULLY dives into hte bin, showing off his diving skills and his badassery. The day is saved, the gauntlet and the dragon go in the bin for safe keeping and Scrooge calls the kids trouble.. and chuckles fondly. “Curse me kilts how i’ve missed trouble”
He’s impressed: Huey’s quick thinking, Louie’s pickpocketing, Dewey’s drive, and Webby’s magical knowledge all saved them. For once. .he’s happy again. And for the second time in life it took his family to remind him why he does this and show him the true fun of adventure: Getting to share it with those he love. And he finally has people to love again. He has family back, kids who look up to him and want to learn from him again, a REASON to adventure. Money and treasure and eveyrthig couldn’t bring della back.. but he at least sees now that whiel they certianly couldn’t.. they can bring him closely with what he has left. She’s gone, for now.. but she left behind three great kids who could use a mentor and Beakly brought him a fourth. And he just found out he has a pilot. The ember.. is now a raging flame. Scrooge is back. Because i’ts not the money or the glory.. it’s the thrill of it, the discovery.. and the family that makes adventuring worth while and he’s learned that lesson again. So he calls Beakly to clear his schedule.. forgetting she you know PUT A FUCKING PIN INTHE WALL the last time he asked her to play scretary and the onlyr eason she dind’t drive over the choke him to death, is that she’s probably happy he’s back on track.
Back at the interview Donald is stapled to the wall and gets the job.. not as an accountant mind but his employer needs a sailor.. and his employer is FLINTHEART GLOMGOLD. Oh boy.
Part 2: Escape To/From Atlantis First the last bit of background I saved: Originally, Fenton and Gyro were supposed to show up here, starting a gag of Fenton showing up but not being named until “Beware the B.U.D.D.Y. System!”, setting up the sub. But the crew decided this took too much away from the focus on the duck family. The not naming him gag was also dropped, and I have two reasons why: Their given reason, which is it’d take up too much time and a logistical reason: While they gave a heartfelt pitch to Lin-Manuel Miranda, as frank wanted a strong Latino superhero to combat the lack of them on film, Frank and Matt probably thought they woudln’t get such a huge name or at least prepared for it.. and were delightfully suprised when Lin happily and tearfully agreed. So they likely scrapped it so they could properly promote the biggest name in their voice cast. Honestly it was for the best and they still go to do the idea with Drake in “The Duck Knight Returns!”, where it worked much better than it probably would have with Fenton.
We open with the Glomgold Industries Employee Training Video! Encourging IP Theft, making things cheaper and general scumbaggery, and claming your the world’s most beloved scottish billionare. IN short the perfect introduction to everyone’s favorite insane, fake-scottish, scheming, egotistical , short sighted billionaire. As i’ve made transparent before, I fucking love the reboot version of Glomgold and he’s easily one of my favorite parts of the reboot. They clearly needded to find a new place for Glomgold in the grand scheme of things as the show was more about globetrotting adventure and family and less about getting contracts or bets about whose bigger money and more about family. While they DID do a classic bet storyline with season 2, it’s clear the old glomgold was just a bit too stiff to properly fit into this new zanier and deeper universe.
So they instead remolded him as a half insane, knockoff scrooge, someone who PURPOSFULLY modeled himself after the guy to try and one up him, and instead of being a fairly low pitched schemer, was a bombastic idiot whose schemes were half baked, whose name was on everything he made, and whose only thing bigger than scrooge was his glorious ego. In short he was perfect for this series and perfect to show up way more often as a bumbling thorn in Scrooge’s side.. but one who COULD be effective in the right circumstances, as to not make him completely pointless. Keith was likewise the only person I could see in the roll now as with Hater he had a history of playing bombastic, egosticial morons, and made Glomgold into the enjoyable ball of ego, bombs, sharks and shouting we know and love. Some people didn’t take to this version after a while... I’m not one of those. I loved him here, I love him now, and he’s every bit as good in season 3 as he was at the start. He’s also wearing a kilt mcduck A KILT. A bit that’st STILL funny four years and 70 some episodes later.
So we meet Gabby McStabberson and the Smashnikovs as they and Donald file in, though Donald is busy wrapping up a call with Scrooge, who assures them he has a low key day planned.. while in the sub getting ready to go to atlantis. And nearly drowning when Dewey tells Launchpad to dive while he and Scrooge are still up top. Cue credits.
So on the sub we get our setup for the two main plots for the episode: While the main thrust of everything is Scrooge taking them to Atlantis, each leads to a diffrent plot. Louie talks to Donald and lies entirely about their day, worrying Webby.. who then reveals she just didn’t tell Beakly she took off or where she was going and encourages her to call and lie. To save time, i’m going to cover this subplot now minus the conclusion as it’s pretty simple and this review is already a day behind. Louie wants her to lie so she dosen’t worry, which is oddly sweet.. still a bit greasy, but it’s clear he means well and it shows in his own way the boy cares about Donald: Sure he’ll lie to the guy, and set up a fradulent charity to scam him.. but he also knows not to worry his dad-uncle and kows Donald is better off thinking their safe than knowing the truth. Granted it also prevents consequences for Louie.. but he’s not playing here here. He gets nothing out of Beakly not knowing the truth or helping some girl he just met, he’s just being NICE in his own twisty way. It’s a nice show of his depths: While louie will lie, cheat and steal Eddie Gurrero style, he does have a caring side underneath hit. He can read people well and while he primarily uses it to manipulate people, we’ll see time and time again that he can use it for good too and to help those he cares about. He’s nothing but supportive the whole plot, and even when he says “you can’t back that up” it’s more worrying about her and having a bit of crack than actually being a dick.
So Webby tries lying, but is about as good as Huey is at it, saying “I’m at a friends house nothing, then makes up a clearly fake name, then says their only talking in swedish for a grandpa. Launchpad DOES help, but only by accident and snake venom. We’ll get to that. As I said this wasn’t the most complex plot.
The main plot is our focus episode for dewey. In theory each of the kids was supposed to have one in the first five episodes: Dewey here, Webby in Daytrip of Doom, Louie in Great Dime Chase and Huey in Impossible Summit of Mt. Nevverest!. Given the last one was horribly delayed, he instead got Terror of the Terra Firmians, which in hindsight wasn’t the best spotlight episode for him. But it’s a good system; Introduce them all in the first half of the pilot then slowly focus on each one.  So now Idoloizing Scrooge, Dewey is desperate to be his sidekick and be seen as an equal and is in deep denial as scrooge instead has them all buckle up for a 17 hour ride and when Dewey questions the route, which skips the direct path.. but is clearly marked with monsters, Scrooge just snaps at him and shuts him down and disapoints the boy who only wants to prove himself to Scrooge.
Naturally though, telling someone with that kind of need for attention and validation to wait goes poorly as he redirects the map while Launchapd is distracted.. and we find out WHY the trip is 17 hours as the direct route nearly gets them killed by mer-ducks, krakens and some sort of storm elemental. Dewey is bummed it didn’t work and annoyed to realize he’s just lumping them all together like Huey pointed out earlier. Huey is also delightful here, having brought travel bingo and sea shanties, clearly used to trips with his other uncle. And adorably taking after him.
But Dewey’s deversion has done more than make him even MORE determined to prove himself to Scrooge whose just trying to NOT loose the son of the daughter he lost...
Tumblr media
The Merducks have taken up residence in the bathroom, so they have to make a pitstop. Scrooge, CLEARLY forgetting how to take a trip with children, wasn’t prepared for this but they find a frieghter and make a stop. Naturally it’s GLOMGOLD’S freighter, where his sub took off from, and he and his minons including Donald find Scrooge using the bathroom.. and the boys to Donald’s rage. Unfortunately saying ‘I’ll kill him” to a raging sociopath who takes that as a sign to kill ALL of them, isn’t a smart move.
So while Donald tries to plan to keep his family alive, said family arrives in Atlantis with a great bit of Scrooge trying to give a big speech only for them to see it first and ooh and ah. They touch down in the city.. which is flip turned upside down. Scrooge notes hti is odd but is able to read the hieroglypchs even upside downa nd notes there’s tones of deadly traps and that they shoudl stay back and..
Huey: Dewey ran in as soon as you said traps.
So while Scrooge tries to prevent dewey loosing his head, Donald prevents launchpad loosing his and makes up an excuse about “if their dead now we can’t tourture them later” to cover his ass. Glomgold is impressed.  Dewey is Dewcipointed that the traps are upside down, though he does trigger some snakes that get launchpad. He’s fine just delirious. And possibly slowly dying but the fact he’s lived this long is a miracle. Maybe that’s why he’s missing for most of season 3 part 2, the snake venom caught up to him and drake and fenton need to find the cure. Anyways the rest of the party stays behind while Scrooge chases after Dewey, who naturally runs ahead AGAIN.
Donald ducks out to use the bathroom, as Dewey tries the old dance through the laser grid routine.. but forgets the part where your supposed to actually avoid it, leaving it to an unseen Donald to stop the fire traps from barbqueing his boy. IT’s a really awesome sequence that shows off Donald’s still got it even if he dosen’t want it.  Scrooge naturally works smarter not harder and simply ziplines above like a badass and berates Dewey when he tells him he took “The easy way”
“Why would you want to take the hard way?” The argument that’s been brewing all episode bubbles up and once again both sides have a point: Scrooge rightfully points out Dewey’s being reckless, has no experince and needs to listen to Scrooge and learn something. Dewey claps back that Scrooge isn’t TEACHING them, just teling them to get behind him while he does things instead of trying to actively mentor them. He outright told them he was going to teach them so while Dewey’s been a wee bit overbearing, he’s right in being disappointed that Scrooge instead just wants them to be safe. I see it as his subconscious acting up: He wants and needs the kids along and is right ot keep them safe.. but is too scared to properly mentor them after what happened to Della and is just trying not to loose anybody. His methods have been right, to keep them safe.. he’s just been so determined to save them, he can’t properly TEACH them so he won’t have to forever or explain WHY. And given the First Adventure shows that while protective he did eventually let Della and Donald pull their weight.. but here he lost so much between adventures.. he just can’e bear loosing them. Dewey also rightfully points out he just lumps them together which in any other version wouldn’t be an issue, until the reboot I had no idea which one was which here? They have distinct outfits and personalities and you had 17 hours to actually get to know them. Probably less given the shortcut but still, several hours at a minimum. It’s things like this that make the series work: while there’s plenty of internal conflicts, at their best their nuanced ones, where if one character is clearly in the wrong they have a reason, and if both are right both are also a bit wrong, versus the original where it’d be scrooge or the boys grabbing the asshole ball at times (Not always mind you but when they did it was insufferable.
However they don’t have time to argue as the bridge goes out and Glomgold finds donald.. and another way around as a result and gets to the treasure first. Scrooge notices they have donald but once again Dewey charges in
“Unhand my uncle” “No” “Okay wasn’t prepared for that”
Naturally both sides are a bit livid, Donald for dragging his boys into danger after being part of the reason his sister is on the moon right now, and Scrooge for working with one of his greatest eneimies.. though Scrooge has less ground to stand on because as Donald points out “I can’t keep track of ALL of your sworn enemies” I mean he has lived like .. 200 years. That’s a long enemies list and Glomgold, while the most persistent, isn’t exactly the most dangerous they probably encountered. Given the guy’s an artist with Bombs and Sharks that does say a lot about how badass Scrooge is.. and how incompitent glomgold usually is. He’s just having an on day today I guess.
Glomgold naturally holds Donald hostage, takes what is suppsidley the jewel and leaves them to drown to death, hitting a wall to let it start leaking. HIs minons run into the rest of the heroes and a fight breaks out while naturally Donald, after even more naturally getting his ass stuck in a hole, literally, rails out at Scrooge for doing this telling him “I knew I couldn’t trust you and” “This is the spear of selene all over again”
Tumblr media
Scrooge’s only response is “I was not responsible for the Spear of Selene!”
Tumblr media
Dude you still paid for the rocket. While Della shoulders most of the blame, SHE choose to take an untested rocket, SHE choose not to come back during the turbulence YOU still built it and hid it from donald and didn’t make sure she couldn’t just take off in it. Your both to blame. And as I mentioned earlier to the least extent but still an extent, so was Donald telling his grown, adult sister whose as stubborn as she is what she could and couldn’t do. He had the right idea and was the only person trying to be an adult here in this situation.. but he still took the wrong approach with stopping her. Still he got far more ground to stand on than Scrooge, who also took his nephews out. Dewey stops both by pointing out that while yes Scrooge took them on an adventure he’s been doing NTOHING but keeping him safe and most of it was his fault which disarms donald a bit. Though Dewey is quickly distracted.. but for once by an obersvation: the gem glowing above thaem that glowed when they entered... and since the city got flipped turned upside down.. THAT’S the real jewel. Dewey asks Donald ot let it flood so they can get it and begs his uncle to trust him despite his doubts which he does. They get it and everyone’s okay and even more when they reunite with the others they find they’ve handily beaten them. To me this is where donalds walls go down a bit: he realizes he’s been smothering the kids, and that while he may hate his uncle for good reason... he’s not going to make the same mistake with them and while he lied.. Don probably realized if Scrooge had been honest Donald would never have let them go. He can trust him.. and he can trust his kids will be alright without him.
So Glomgold naturally leaves his minions to die, but our heroes manage to make it to the sub, and Gabby asks if they can bum a ride. Not wanting to do any murders they agree. On the surface Glomgold is showing off his jewel, only for Scrooge to upstage him second’s later with the real jewel, and point out his is “nice but defintly cursed”... and right on cue Glomgold gets dragged off with an octopus and let’s off his first “Curse you mcduck!”. Scrooge offers clean water and power thorugh it, for a price because of course he does, and has offically made his grand comeback.
We get back to Webby’s subplot, as she’s confronted by Beakly.. who naturally being a former spy easily figured it out immieditely but is only upset her grandaughter lied to her. And even at that she dosen’t raise her voice or anything about the matter, knowing it’d only make her feel worse and getting that her grandaughter needs to see the world and that much like donald, she walled her up to prevent loosing what little she had left. And since being with Scrooge is safe as with her, she can go with him anytime just tell her first kay? They hug. Awwww.
Donald likewise apologizes, admitting that whatever has passed, he misjudged his uncle here and while not forgiving him yet, is at least willing to let him back into his life and into the boys.. on holidays and stuff at least. But fate forces his hand.. or rather his 10 year old nephew-son having left the engine on and neither having turned it off, meaning his boat goes boom and is in no liveable condition. But Scrooge has the space in his heart and mansion for them.
So as we close the kids help move the artifacts all around the house instead of just the garage while Launchapd drops the boat. While clearing out Dewey notices the painting from earlier.. and finds part of it was flipped over...
Tumblr media
“Mom?!”
Now keep in mind, while nowadays Della’s inclusion in the show is one of the most famous and treasured parts of the show.. back then this was a fucking shock. Disney never really cared about the boys mother and outside of one comics story never really went into what happened. So the fact she was not only an actual important part of the plot but we’d find out was a HUGE wham moment and left my jaw dropped after seeing the episode. Like I would with the finales I had read no spoilers and had no idea this was coming but damn was it a huge and welcome suprise and how far they’d take it and how much they’d flesh her out was an even bigger one. Easily one of the best big reveals i’ve ever seen. The only better one I can think of from this series itself... is the end of season 2. But that’s for another time.
Final Thoughts on Woo-Ooo!:
This two parter/hour long special.. is still one of the episodes best and easily one of the best pilots. It does slow down a bit in pacing in the second half, but otherwise is just an immaculate , beautiful pilot movie that introduces and fleshes out all 8 main characters, maybe Launchpad the least but enough to still work, gives us some big mysteries to work out, and even throws in Glomgold’s first apperance. It sets the tone, reverent and adventuerous but also with it’s own weird and wacky sense of humor and world building, and universe perfectly. I .. don’t have much else to say really it’s just THAT good and really worth checking out. If you somehow haven’t seen it go watch it and if you haven’t seen it in a while might be worth a rewatch before the finale. The absolutely perfect start to an amazing ride.
Next on the Della Arc: Dewey and Webby try to figure out where Della is while Louie learns a valuable life lesson and  pisses off a killer robot along the way.

Destiel and LGBTQ+ REP: a rant
When I was 18, fresh from graduation, my best friend sent me a text. It was clearly not meant for me, as he called me “love” several times, something he had never done in 16 years (we met when we were two: best friend doesn’t really cover it, it’s more like brother). I replied “???” and he said “sorry, it was meant for a (girl)friend of mine”. I found it weird, but didn’t push. Except a minute later I get another text. “It’s ok, X, I think she bought it.” Where X is the name of my other best friend.
A guy.
I didn’t know what to do. I had no idea beforehand, and I couldn’t really believe it. After a few minutes, the third text.
“Mind if X and I come over tonight? There’s something we’d like to tell you.”
OK. So they come over, we sit in the car (they’re in the front seats, I’m behind them). They make zero eye contact. They’re nervous.
Eventually, it’s me who has to say it.
“You love each other.”
They share a nervous glance.
“Yes, but in a way that…”
“You’re in love with each other.”
I was so afraid of saying the wrong thing, of being offensive, that I didn’t say much else. Years later, we’d laugh about how for a moment there they thought I had a problem with it, because I was so still, and silent.
I was casually homophobic back then, but the idea of being an ass to my best friends in the world had never even crossed my mind. When I say casual homophobe, I mean, I didn’t know any better. I had been raised in a catholic country with zero representation, zero family members who explained this stuff to me and all I knew about being gay was that they were effeminate, they fucked like rabbits and generally speaking it was always a good topic for a booming laugh.
They forced me out of that mentality. I began reading. Talking to them. Educating myself. I still remember my father shouting when I tentatively said that I was thinking about joining an LGBTQ+ association, screaming that “I wasn’t one of them”. My friends’ coming out was an eye-opener for me, as I slowly realised everything that sounds so natural, so obvious now.
I was able to grow and watch from an outsider’s perspective, and to this day, I honestly think I’m more involved in LGBTQ+ activism than they are, especially since they’re not out-out yet, ten years later.
From the outside, certain things hit me in a particular manner. I realised one day as I proposed a movie title (“It’s LGBTQ+ themed, you’ll love it”) that apart from sub-genres and niche fiction, there wasn’t a lot of it. And thus began my interest in LGBTQ+ representation in fiction, to the point that I’ve written Uni papers on it and that I became known in my Uni circle as the “gay girl”, despite the fact that I was straight.
Now, I’ve always had a deep and profound conviction: Destiel was an accident.
Take two actors with surprising, unpredictable chemistry, put in a few awesome one-liners, a dash of innuendo, a touch of double-entendre and voila. You have accidentally created an epic romance that makes most romance novels and tv shows blush in comparison.
Destiel – I think – was never supposed to be ‘a serious thing’. They played with it, they toyed with the possibility, because in truth, the phenomenon quickly got out of hand. They found it weird, unsettling, how much the fans were involved in this, and tried their best to squash it before it could take life.
It didn’t work. They pushed, and pushed, and pushed, and now this is the breaking point.
Because with Destiel, it’s not a matter of shipping: it’s a matter of being slapped in the face for believing two men could love each other in such a simple, pure manner. They called us crazy. Visionaries. Insane. Creepy. Obsessed. But at the same time, they couldn’t resist pushing a little bit more, because we were such good fans, buying DVDs, flying miles and miles to attend conventions, filling our houses with merch. “Just a tiny bit more,” they probably thought. “Let’s exploit the crazies. Throw in a line here, a line there, give them something to hang on to.”
And then 15x18. And then 15x19. And then 15x20.
They drew us back in, only to punch us in the face so swiftly that it took a moment to realise.
I was on a discord chat the night 15x20 aired. Since I’m a spoiler hungry bitch, I went into the Canadian chatroom, where they already knew what was going to happen. So, I had the dubious privilege of watching how – in the other chats – people went from perplexed, to disbelieving, to heartbroken as the episode progressed. I saw their hope being shattered. It’s still a memory that makes me shudder, especially as I was nursing my own grief at the time.
I’m fresh out of grief, now, though. I’m angry. I’m angry for my friends, who never get to see characters like them in a proper TV show or movie without it being labelled as “gay stuff”, I’m angry for that idealistic, slightly homophobic 18-year-old who still had hope things could change, and I’m angry that people still believe you can exploit LGBTQ+ people in an attempt to grab some cash. Not anymore. Not in 2020.
I don’t care what they claim, they knew this was going to happen, but they also believed it would blow over quickly. Let’s prove them wrong.

Dragin Hikari's Top 12 Games of the 2009-2019 Decade #6 Fire Emblem Three Houses for Nintendo Switch (Released 2019)
Tumblr media
I will finish this writing project I swear lol
If this was the decade for any series if would probably be Fire Emblem.  Once a niche series on the verge of cancellation, after Fire Emblem Awakening release in 2012, it has risen the ranks to becomes one of Nintendo’s upper tier franchises.  Due to the fact that I’ve played every Fire Emblem that has come out since then to death. It was inevitable that one of the games would end up on my list.   However, to avoid putting a bunch of the games from the same series I felt I need to choose the one I liked the absolute best and surprising it was the most recent game in the series: Fire Emblem Three Houses.
Fire Emblem Three Houses story differs quite a bit from previous Fire Emblem games and the gameplay actually plays into this difference as well.   The main character Byleth, travelling with a Mercenary Band ran by his father, through a chance encounter ends up saving three students from the Officer Academy at Garreg Mach Monastery.  During this incident, Byleth encounters a mysterious green haired girl seemingly in his mind that saves him from a mistake he was about to make.   Member of the Officers Academy identify Byleth’s father as a former member of Knights of Seiros, and they agree to accomplish the students to the Officer’s Academy where Byleth is granted a role as a professor by the Archbishop Rhea to lead one of the three houses.   As the Head Professor of one the houses, Byleth trains and discovering things along way.   At a certain point in the story a particular event occurs which changes everything for Byleth going forward.
The story plays out drastically differently from the previous games in series and I think greatly to its benefit.   The game contains three main routes, one for each of the three houses and one additional route that splits off from one of those routes.   Unlike Fire Emblem Fates, which also tried the different route thing but fell kind of flat, Fire Emblem Three Houses does make you generally experience the consequences of the decisions you make in the first half of the game.  The characters you ally yourself with, how you train your students, and how you generally make use of your time makes a big difference in your success.     It also features a central hub in the form of the Garreg Mach Monastery where most of the game takes place, and the activities in the monastery can make things easier or more difficult later on.   Because the first half of the game has you interact with everyone from all houses before shit hits the fan it stuck with me more harshly when I had to take down the same students from the first half the game.   The game also does a good job keeping each route from revealing everything that going on, encouraging players to try different routes to learn more about the world Fire Emblem Three Houses has created.   The question of ‘What is the right thing to do’ is very much muffled in the different routes and the intense debates I’ve seen surrounding the game just speaks well to its story.
Fire Emblem Three Houses plays similar to other Fire Emblem games with many of the returning elements however some of these elements such as the support system and weapon triangle were actually scaled back power while introducing new system such as the army Gambit system which allowed for some additional attacks with an army your character leads. Though some of these changes were kind of hit and miss in my eyes it still made for a fairly enjoyable experience.
The art style is slightly different from the previous games looking fairly good for the most part though there is a lot of animation recycling between the characters and outside of the more cinema scenes mostly involves a lot of standing around and talking making some elements kind of dull bring the story down a bit.  However, this is made up for by the cast of colorful characters that make up the three houses.   Though not all of the characters are fully developed as strong as they could be, they were for the most part enjoyable and had some pretty decent voice acting to boot.   The music is a step up in some regards due to the differences between the Switch and the 3DS making for a very solid soundtrack.  Though I don’t remember anything that was quite as memorable as some of Awakening, Fates, or even past games tracks.
Despise some odd choices in the gameplay department, Fire Emblem Three Houses served both a departure from conventions of the series while still being familiar results in a fairly enjoyable experience. Though I have no experienced all routes in the game, I hope to go back to it someday.

This AU Idea I never finished
ABYSS
CHAPTER 1 (no longer a thing RIP)
Henry Crosem liked to think of himself as a simple man. Ever since he was a boy he’d only ever had his sights respectively fall upon the category of:
Get good grades.
Get a good scholarship, specifically in the art field.
Maybe find himself a beautiful wife who could cook about as well as him.
They’d get married and have kids. How many kids Henry was never sure about, he just knew he wanted some kids. A couple of girls and a couple of boys.
Then he’d get old and have grandchildren. He would die happy with the ones he loved.
A simple, American way of thinking. Just living a happy life till the end of days. Nevermind the dreamers with big ideas and egotistical mindsets with business, business, business on their minds; all Henry wanted to achieve at was being happy.
Forever.
He had never imagined himself as someone who was an amazing artist. It just so happened he was capable of drawing cartoons the best. Everytime he put pencil to paper those sketches became outlines and those outlines seemed to almost always breathe life in them with their exaggerated facial expressions and happy-go-lucky smiles adorning their round, plump cheeks. Pie cut eyes colored in black held all assortments of emotions ranging from melancholy, angry, grumpy, sad, bored, irritated, you name it; he could draw it.
An amazing cartoonist is what they’d called him.
He’d do well working for Fleischer or Disney, they would praise to him.
Henry, however, liked to think otherwise. It had never been a case of what studio he would go to, more like what kind of college would give him the best experience of his twenties. There was never a goal to join a big studio, too much expectation to follow the rules, stick strictly to the guidelines, don’t go off script! If there was one thing Henry Crosem hated more than algebra as a whole, it was having his creativity diminished or restrained into oblivion.
With the creative liberty he gave himself, he had managed to create something quite amazing. Something you wouldn't expect to get pass the parent censors, but this was Henry they were referring to and so they didn’t question the sharp horns and gleefully, creepy (but not sinister) smile that adorned the white of its face.
It had been created, though it had no name. It would be four exact months before a name that would be recognized and feared in the land would be given to the cartoon character.
“Bendy.”
“Huh?”
“No, I mean the name - for the character - should be Bendy.”
Henry looked over at the voice who had spoken. It was a boy, well a man technically, but he had a few set features that made him seem like a boy, with a lanky build about him. His knees were knobby, and one even appeared to be slightly crooked (he was not wearing long pants like he usually would to hide such an extremity) and an angular and narrow face, his eyes were kind of big, and they were a bright brown swimming with mirth, his cheek bones portruded from the sides of his face, chin just a tad too sharp for one’s liking; his ears were pointy and big and stuck out like elf ears and his nose was sharp and curved up a bit at the end. To top it all off, he wore big, goofy-looking glasses that lo and behold, completed the nerd aesthetic to a fine degree.
Henry gave him a raised eyebrow and turned to look down at the little doodle he had created. “Bendy, huh?”
The picture itself was simplistic in design with “Bendy” waving enthusiastically at nothing in particular with a big smile on his face. Behind him lay a sweetly curved tail with the tip being drawn to look like the tip of an ink pen. A niche little design Henry was especially proud of.
Joey laid back into the bench he was situated on and shrugged, “It seemed like a good idea to me - I mean, it’s just..remember that essay from a few months back?”
“What essay?”
“The one where I specifically remember coming into your dorm room and witnessing you bashing your head on a table while muttering about how much you want to jump out a window.”
Oh. That one. Some time ago, three months actually, Henry had embarked on an amazing journey through literature, in which he was told to write an entire essay on character designs and how they should and must coincide with their personalities in some shape or form. The teacher had given the students permission to use their own characters they had created in the essay as an example, and naturally, Henry had picked the first ever toon he'd called an actual success. The little toon demon had had many names running through Henry's brain, but none had ever stuck, and when he had found one halfway through his essay and sleep deprived he'd accidentally misspelled the name, and what came of it was jumbled jargon of what should have been Bentley.
Luckily, it was his own work and so his teacher completely glossed over the typo when he'd turned it in, didn't mean anything to Henry who was a wreck throughout the whole endeavor and beyond. To hear Joey bring it back up again had him quite annoyed and embarrassed, which was always a good combination of emotions.
“I mean...that doesn't...really...sound - feasible?...” Henry stated, wincing at how his voice strained on the last word. He'd had a sore throat for a whole week, and it was annoying - agitating - at best.
Joey suddenly leaned in, eyes wild with excitement. “But, it could work so well! Like a pun!”
“...a pun?”
“Well, I mean, he's a toon; and they're pretty bendy aren't they?” Joey stated in a matter-of-fact tone. He shrugged.
“Well yeah-” Henry muttered, finding himself becoming a tad more convinced.
“Then it's perfect!” Joey exclaimed, arms flailing about. He almost fell out of his seat in the process of his jerky movements.
Henry snorted and rolled his eyes at his friends antics, then glanced back down at his crinkled, white paper. Hesitantly he reached for the pen he had laid down on the table, before lightly gripping it, and, holding it steadily, etched the word ‘Bendy’ into the paper.
“Bendy...huh?”
Well...it wasn't that bad of a name…
The name for the studio, was pretty lacking in creativity.
Joey Drew Studios.
It was bad enough that Joey's name was viable to turn into someone's pun of the week, but then to gleefully add it to the studio's name - considering on the fact that it was an animation studio to begin with - didn't make it better, and Henry so badly wanted to bury himself into the sandy and gravel parking lot.
Beside him Joey stood proud and tall with his hands on his waist looking up at the crooked sign reading his name in big, blocky letters. A smile, all teeth exposed, like it could light up a Christmas tree was plastered on his face, and with some carelessness, the man slammed a hand upon Henry's shoulder with more force than he had intended, especially for someone so skinny.
Henry looked, and his moss greens met excited browns that seemed to have a smile of their own. It was infectious in a way and the chestnut haired man smiled as well.
“With this, Henry. This studio; you and I...we're gonna go places...big places…”
Joey said it with confidence and bravado and Henry couldn't help but to believe him. Even if he thought that couldn't be further from the truth.
Even though some part of him felt like this was lie. A big lie.
One of many lies yet to be made.
The place itself was desolate and gray.
Faded, yellowed walls with torn and shredded wood, along with the pervasive smell of old ink was all that was left of a dream.
And Henry had long since cried about it.
Shuffling through the strangely quiet halls of the studio, he tried to keep his breathing as shallow as possible, especially with the aforementioned dust and...rotten wood, he hoped that was what that smell was. Stepping lightly over wooden boards so as to not immediately fall down another hole the man continued on, clutching a broken and bent pipe against his chest, if only if to feel secure if nothing else. His axe, which would be his third axe having been lost, had broken while in the midst of a fight with a hoard of searchers. He’d narrowly escaped death for the twentieth time before giving up and thrusting the rest of what was left of the weapon into the ‘stomach’ of one of the moaning creatures of blackness.
Didn’t mean anything though because he still ended up with a mouthful of ink that he just barely managed to stop from slithering down his throat. He scratched at his neck feeling an itching sensation welling up inside him.
Another coughing fit.
Not now! Not now! Henry cast his eyes around the space he was in but all he could see were blank walls with questionable dark stains splattered on them that definitely didn’t look like ink to him.
Walking just a little bit faster till he was going in a light jog he made it to the end of the hallway where he came across two passages.
A wheezy breath in the form of an exhale escaped passed his lips, releasing some of the pressure from off his chest. With a quickness, the man hadn’t known himself to have he slapped a thick hand against his mouth silencing any further noise less he make a noise loud enough to attract attention to any monsters roaming the halls and be killed off - that, and he didn’t even know of any other Bendy statues that could be down here. And besides that, he couldn’t afford to get into another fight, not now; not after having to deal with killing the only true companion he’d found solace in in this hellhole of a studio turned into a beast of nightmarish proportions by that fucking someone he thought he could trust. And then having to fight them afterwards when they didn’t get their way, Henry just slightly escaping the inky person’s grasp and making a beeline for the exit. Now he found himself incredibly deep within the studio, and at this point he was certain that there was no way of escape, all he could truly do now was survive, and maybe hope that he could come across someone else trapped here as well, although the likelihood of that being the case was quite small as far as he was concerned, and yet optimism had always been one of Henry’s defining characteristics. Now alongside being able to cheat death itself!
It was funny though really - the ink could destroy you or heal you, yet it could never figure out  which to stick with when it came to Henry, which technically gave him the advantage to do as he pleases, but there was a need to still be cautious around the stuff…
He wondered if that’s why Wally and Norman ended up sharing the same fate...
Henry shook his head, his faded, chestnut hair bobbing lightly with the motion. He couldn’t think about those things now. When he found a safe room to rest in he could reminiscence and cry like a bitch then, right now he needed to focus. The pressure in his chest had built up even more and the wheezes were turning into full on gulps for air as he tried to maintain composure, but it was kind of hard to do that when his lungs felt as if they could burst at any second, and he was sure that if he stopped now to let out a polite and quiet cough he would end just showing that it was truly possible for a human to projectile vomit from a distance.
But he couldn’t stop, and his coughing fit could very well leave him vulnerable to any ambush.
Better to be safe than to be sorry.
That’s what he told his daughter at least.
“But the spider looks so cute! Why can’t I touch it? It ain’t doin’ nothing!” A small girl with pale skin and dark hazel hair and intense dark blue eyes stared up him with a small pout, her brow furrowed.
“Only if you wanna get bitten!” Henry exclaimed sitting the tool box covered in oil. He’d been working on the family car has it had broken down for the third time in a row and he wanted to check it out and see if he could fix the problem himself before even entertaining the thought of going to a car shop to get it repaired. He turned to her and placed his hands on his hips, a steady, playful glare directed at her. “Your mother and I don’t have the means to pay another hospital bill because you’re feelin’ a little adventurous.”
The girl pouted just a little bit more to the point of where her bottom lip began to wobble, and with some cursed talent she managed to give off the impression that she was about to cry. Luckily, Henry had had plenty of time to get used to her ‘pouty face’ and so was able to ignore it. He waggled a finger at her with a stern glare, “Nuh-uh, ain’t happenin’.”
“Daaaaaad!” She stomped her feet on the hard packed earth causing small dust clouds to poof into existence. She balled her small hands into small fists and glared back at him silently. Her dark eyes reflecting a storm, yep, she certainly was her mother…
“Better to be safe than sorry my dear!” And he said this in what he considered to be a perfect match to the Wicked Witch’s voice from ‘The Wizard of Oz’, though of course his wife and child would digress heavily on that front.
So caught up in his memories, Henry completely forgot to pay attention to just about...well anything, and so when the first cough, which turned into a second and then a third came loose from his throat, he immediately collapsed on his hands and knees, inhaling shaky breaths and desperately wishing for some water to alleviate the misery his throat was under. Coughing seized for a moment before making a comeback faster than he could anticipate, and soon he was hacking and choking on bits of ink lodged in his throat refusing to come out anytime soon. Spat on the ground and looked in horror and the wet chunk of dried ink and blood glistening in the dim light of the hall.
He stood back up hastily, groaning and still spitting and hacking and wheezing and coughing. As he did this he could hear the sounds of heavy moans from behind, and he turned to see thin amalgamations of a half-human half-melted deformity crawling across the floor, its thin arms shivering as if they could collapse at any moment.
A searcher.
Although this one was small, where there was one, there would be ten more to count and Henry knew he definitely didn’t have the strength to fight them all off.
So he ran.
Or attempted to at least. Instead he hobbled a meger pace that would grandmas seem faster in comparison to a man in his late fifties.
He wasn’t anywhere near the end of the hallway when he heard a ghastly screech from behind, and, deciding that looking back was really stupid (he was going to die anyways though) he looked behind him to see ‘Bendy’ casually making his way out if the inky portal he’d created. From the looks of it, he was now more skinny than before, with what was supposed to be a spinal cord now looking closer to sharp spikes protruding from his back. His ribcage was more defined and poked through his ‘skin’ showing bits of white. If Henry dared to squint and look closer he could even make out bits of dark ‘flesh’ hanging off the ends of the white marrow.
The monster seemed to look to his left before looking to his right and staring dead at him.
Or at least he thought he was staring at him.
It paused, as if observing him, and then with a loud cry unlike all the others he’d heard before, it charged with clawed, inky limbs outstretched, ready to kill him immediately. At that point, still hacking up blood and ink, Henry allowed the creature to grip him, its claws digging deep into his flesh. He cried out in agony, but realized it was pointless because it was all the same dance and no amount of pleading or crying or begging would cause the pain to end; his suffering would continue onwards whether he wanted it to or not. And he was pretty sure this thing was just sentient enough to be able to understand how to sneak up and kill its prey, but not enough to have a moral conscience. Or at least that was the only theory he could come to.
Then again, was it really a theory? The amount of times he had been ambushed by ‘Bendy’ was immense after all.
Henry had long since stopped screaming, even as those wicked claws ripped flesh and skin from his white bones; even as he felt those same claws puncture a lung, causing him to gasp desperately for air; even as he had his intestines ripped violently from his stomach and in his faded moments of lasting life he watched the creature, with an ever present grin etched onto its face, crush his heart.
Blood was splattered everywhere, some of it old, and some of it new. Although if you asked Henry he wouldn’t be able to tell you the difference.
Henry’s entire body had been eviscerated and mutilated beyond recognition and could very well be described as a smears of red and chunks of flesh scattered about. Because that was basically what he had become, and still was technically.
Struggling through the tunnel of ink he could feel bits of his body wriggling and growing back.  It was at this point, as he grew a neck for his decapitated head, that he realized he had just mere moments ago been nothing but a floating mass of empty air, or better yet, if this world worked the way it evidently did, he had been nothing but a floating soul amongst the ink that was now regrowing a body. And that was kind of cool, but also terrifying.
Everyone else lost their soul to the ink and yet he was still here?!
He had died in the worst way imaginable. In a way that should not have ended with him emerging from the ink puddle next to the Bendy statue he had become familiarized with. Everyone else was gone, but even when he lost all his body parts his soul was able to go on…
Apparently, Joey was really fucking adamant about keeping him alive…
Fuck you, Joey...just- fuck you…
“Welp, twice times the charm I guess…”he muttered making his way back down…
Shit where the fuck was he?
He paused and looked both ways before a sudden realization dawned on him.
“Seriously, fuck you Joey…”
Successfully raiding a trashcan for food in a world dominated by inky creatures that didn’t necessarily need food to survive was always a blessing.
Which was incredibly ironic considering on the fact that this place ran on Satanic magic.
At least Bendy liked to think so.
Curved, white claws dragged through rubbish pulling out scraps of meat and black, fleshy things covered in ink. The toon was sure it was worms. He shrugged and shoved the food in his mouth and chewed thoughtfully. Two more days before he would at least reach the sewer parts of the city, though of course he could cut that down to one-in-a-half if he snuck aboard one of those supply ships those Goldies were stationed in. But then again, everyone was looking for him most likely, or would soon.
Snatching a few more scraps of rotten meat covered in ink he shoved it deep into his pant pockets which were a dark, navy-green coloring with a dark, gray-orange coat wrapped snug around his top torso.
The toon jumped up and looked around wildly with oddly off-model eyes. He had stopped in one of the many alleyways designated throughout the city. In the distance, he could hear the sounds of shouting and yelling and the sounds of blaring horns.
Guards…
Great - more hiding. And just when he didn't feel like involving Boris in anymore danger than he already was…
And he didn't trust his magic to be cooperative with him at the moment with his nerves all frazzled.

Viddy Games Monthly #1 - February 2019
Is this really late? Sure Is!
Here's something new I'm trying! In this 'issue' (lol):
NEW RELEASES - A look back at everything exciting that dropped this month, from Resident Evil 2 to the new 2D Mario!
NEWS - January is usually pretty dry for viddy games, but there's some interesting stuff still!
Release dates, updates and more!
NEW RELEASES
Fitness Boxing (RD: January 4th - Nintendo Switch)
Tumblr media
And here we have Nintendo’s first real attempt in this console generation to draw in the fitness crowd they catered to so well with the Wii. Except, Fitness Boxing feels a lot more technical and niche than those other titles from a decade ago. Fitness Boxing’s main draw is teaching you how to improve your boxing form, meaning it’s definitely not one to play with the family unless you’re all die hard boxing fans. But if you’re less interested in picking up the technical aspects, Fitness Boxing works just as well as a fitness companion, coming packed with its own motivational trainer (I haven’t picked this game up purely because it would feel like I’m cheating on the Wii Fit Trainer. Plus this basically dashes all hope of Wii Fit Switch so I’ll need to mourn that for a hot minute).
Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey (RD: January 11th - Nintendo 3DS)
Tumblr media
As the 3DS reaches the end of its lifespan and its screentime in the Nintendo Directs gets shorter, this Mario & Luigi title could well be one of the last RPGs we see on the system. In this enhanced remaster, the worlds of turn based RPG and 2D platformer collide and, coupling this fact with some odd setpieces including Bowser’s literal stomach, also make for one of the weirdest games on the system. Despite this, there’s no doubt that it works. With the addition of the Bowser Jr.’s Journey expansion, there’s undoubtedly a wealth of content to explore here, especially if you’re new to this oddly charming RPG spin-off.
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (RD: January 11th - Nintendo Switch)
Tumblr media
The latest in a long line of Wii U ports, Nintendo has bundled up Mario U and Super Luigi U and released it yet again on the Switch. This is by no means a bad thing, as we had yet to see a 2D Mario on the system, but the general consensus seems to be that the play time is much shorter than the price would have you believe. Of course, if you’re a die hard Mario fan, there’s no doubt you’ve already picked this up and it’s definitely worth a go if you didn’t have a chance to play on Wii U. Alongside this, new features include new playable characters and helpful items for if you’re like me and are terrible at platformers (I welcome these changes). But really, I think the talk of the town was the fact they patched in Blue Toad before release when everyone got sad that he was absent. Thanks Nintendo.
Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition (RD: January 11th - Windows, Xbox One, PS4, Switch)
Tumblr media
An enhanced port with updated HD graphics to celebrate the 10th anniversary of this beloved entry in Bandai Namco’s Tales series. This edition comes packed with a beefy selection of new content, including all that was exclusive to Japan at the time of the PS3 port’s release. Generally, this game scored high at the time of its release, being cited as an interesting and unique JRPG that was made all the better by its trademark combat system that has been carried throughout the series.
The Walking Dead: The Final Season - Episode 3: Broken Toys (RD: January 15th - Windows, Xbox One, PS4, Switch)
Tumblr media
Against all the odds, the critically acclaimed Walking Dead game series has somehow survived the closure of its creator, Telltale Games, continuing under Skybound Entertainment. The series continues to shine in critic reviews, which thankfully continues into the penultimate episode, Broken Toys. With a firm release date of the final episode being March 26th, we won’t have to wait long to finally witness the end of Clementine’s story.
Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes (RD: January 18th - Nintendo Switch)
Tumblr media
The third entry in the No More Heroes series has finally arrived 9 years after its second effort, though this time to mixed reviews. The gameplay fans of the series are used to has been totally overhauled this time around, instead throwing Travis into a possessed game console containing six wildly different, self-contained video games. This time, the gameplay is entirely from a top-down perspective. Some enjoyed this radical change of pace for the series, but other fans of Travis believed the drastic change was a little too jarring to enjoy in contrast to this entry’s predecessors.
Resident Evil 2 remake (RD: January 25th - Windows, PS4, Xbox One)
Tumblr media
The highly anticipated remake of Capcom’s horror classic finally dropped this month, and let’s be honest, it’s everything fans wanted. The controversial move to ditch the usual fixed camera the early RE games are known for so the game could be built in Capcom’s home-grown Resident Evil 7 engine was what made the game so immersive and genuinely terrifying. With tons of gameplay tweaks, Capcom managed to tread the line between creating a fresh experience and staying faithful to the original game. Entirely different puzzle solutions, new dialogue and a whole new playable character in Sherry Birkin ensures that those who know the original inside out will still have more to discover, but the return of each horrifying boss and setpiece in glorious HD puts the nostalgia into overdrive. Plus, the tofu block came back so really there’s nothing to gripe at.
Kingdom Hearts III (RD: January 29th - Xbox One, PS4)
Tumblr media
Here it is. The game fans have been waiting 14 years for. The one that ties every character and confusing plot arc together and says ‘Merry christmas, Baymax is in this game now!’
With a few fan favourite worlds returning among a handful of new ones, Kingdom Hearts has finally launched itself into the current gen with a heartfelt tale of friendship and big hair. There really is very little to say about this, because we all knew it was going to be good.
Also out this month:
First person shooter Bright Memory released this month to positive reception, despite controversy around the stolen assets used by the devs.
Charming adventure game Vane dropped this month, allowing players to explore a beautiful world as a boy who can turn into a bird.
Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, the critically acclaimed combat flight sim series, released for PS4 and Xbox One, with some great VR content.
Life Is Strange 2 Episode 2 - Rules released this month, continuing the heartfelt tale of two brothers on the run
Gothic Indie RPG Sunless Skies released at the very end of January, showing a detailed focus on narrative and exploration
NEWS
What’s been happenin’? Probably a lot, but this is what I picked up on!
Metroid Prime 4 has gone a bit wonky
Tumblr media
As everyone has probably heard by now, the long awaited Metroid Prime 4 has officially been halted and restarted, as announced in a commendably transparent video Nintendo published on their YouTube channel last month. Basically, they weren’t happy with how development was going so they’ve gone back to square one, this time with the help of past Prime developers Retro Studios. Honestly, this is a really good sign, as it shows how committed Nintendo are to creating a solid game to stand next to the other three. Plus, this makes a Prime trilogy switch port way more likely in my eyes, so hooray for that.
Piranha Plant got here early!
Tumblr media
At the tail end of January, those who redeemed their plant boi codes turned on Smash and suddenly got the gratefully received ‘Piranha Plant joins the battle’ message! I can confirm I made a bit of a weird dolphin noise when I saw he’d turned up before the estimated February release. In another post, I’ll be breaking down his moveset in a bit more detail, so keep an eye out for that if you’re a fellow plant connoisseur!
Sony patents retro back-compatibility for PS5?
Tumblr media
A new patent Sony put through last month that they tried to sneak by us MAY hint at retro back-compatibility for their next system, spanning all four of their home consoles. If this news is true, this could give Sony a massive edge in the next console gen, as remasters and retro games become increasingly popular, as well as the fact that people are unlikely to want to leave the considerable PS4 library behind. So at the very least, we can hope for PS4 games to be playable on the PS5.
Cross platform achievements could be a thing!
Tumblr media
A since removed GDC listing teased the possible integration of Xbox Live onto iOS, Android and, interestingly, the Nintendo Switch! At a base level, this would very probably mean that achievements between these two consoles would be cross compatible, or at least viewable on either console. While nothing is confirmed just yet, this could be a sign of the growing partnership between Microsoft and Nintendo.
Nintendo is really lovin’ their mobile games!
Tumblr media
With Switch sales beginning to level out ever so slightly, Nintendo seems to be turning to the mobile market. A mobile Mario Kart was announced a couple of years ago, but now it finally has a name, Mario Kart Tour. It’s now slated for a Summer 2019 release. Alongside this, Nintendo have announced Dr. Mario World for mobile, as well as rumours bubbling under that Dragalia Lost could be seeing a localised port for Canada and Europe.
New Nintendo Selects for the States!
Tumblr media
Super Mario Maker, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D and Star Fox 64 3D have arrived in America as Nintendo Selects, thankfully proving that Nintendo aren’t quite willing to let the 3DS die just yet. Not to be that guy, but Majora’s Mask over in Europe as a select would be pretty great. Pls.
Indie Highlights
Tumblr media
And finally, Nintendo has dropped another Indie Highlights on us, featuring the likes of Wargroove, When Ski Lifts Go Wrong, Forager and the (long awaited?) Goat Simulator port. Worth a look if you’re looking for something a little wackier to play this month!
That’s all the headlines for this month!
FREE VIDYA
Are you subscribed to whatever online service your console has? Then oh boy, you got some free stuff!
NES Nintendo Switch Online - Blaster Master & Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
Tumblr media
This month, Nintendo added the ever wonderful and upsettingly hard Zelda II to their retro lineup, along with lesser known run-and-gun platformer Blaster Master.
PlayStation Plus - Steep & Portal Knights
Tumblr media
It’s a good month for snowboard enthusiasts over on the PS4 this month, as Ubisoft’s open world sports game Steep joins the lineup. Alongside this, the artistically charming RPG Portal Knights was free last month. January also marked the final month of PS Plus support for the Vita and PS3, with Fallen Legion: Flames of Rebellion & Super Mutant Alien Assault joining the Vita lineup and Zone of the Enders HD Collection and Amplitude free for PS3 owners
Xbox Game Pass
Tumblr media
January was a hecking good month for members of the Xbox game pass, with the entire Life Is Strange saga joining the service, along with other quality games such as Just Cause 3, Farming Simulator 17, Absolver, Aftercharge and ARK: Survival Evolved.
RELEASE DATES
Yoshi’s Crafted World
Tumblr media
Nintendo released a story trailer for Yoshi’s creative new outing, showing off Baby Bowser and Kamek as the game’s villains. The release date set for this uniquely cardboard platformer is March 29th, so fans won’t have to wait long!
Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn
Tumblr media
Breathing new life into the 3DS is this enhanced port of Kirby’s Epic Yarn, which originally released on the Wii in 2010. Featuring all new content that wasn’t available the first time around, fans of the Kirby series will be able to pick this up from March 8th.
Final Fantasy remasters
Tumblr media
After the exciting announcement in September that beloved Final Fantasy games would be coming to other consoles in 2019, Square Enix have finally announced release dates for a couple of these titles. Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster will hit the Switch and Xbox One on April 16th, while Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age arrives on both of these consoles on April 30th.
RUMOURS
Welcome to probably the most controversial segment of this, the rumour-y bit! Just a pre-warning that nothing talked about here is by any means confirmed, so keep your expectations tempered.
SNES for Switch Online?
Tumblr media
A recent datamine into the NES Switch Online app has apparently revealed a list of 20 SNES games in the code that could be coming to the system in the future, including Mario World, Kirby Superstar, A Link to the Past and Super Metroid. I’m hesitant to say this is true because nothing has been said on Nintendo’s end yet, but considering the lack of content for Switch Online as of yet, I’d say it’s fairly likely in any case. If this is true, we can all hope for DK Country and EarthBound also because pls Nintendo.
Smash Ultimate Fighter Pass Leak
Tumblr media
There have been two notable datamines in the past month that could reveal our four remaining DLC fighters for Smash Ultimate. The first uncovered three names in the coding for the game, Plant (obviously referring to Piranha Plant), Jack (Likely Joker from Persona 5) and Brave (Speculated to be Erdrick from the Dragon Quest series). The reason why Brave is so heavily speculated to be Erdrick is because, in Japan, the hero class Erdrick belongs to in Dragon Quest is called ‘Yusha’, which translates to brave in English. Alongside this, one of the heads of development for Smash Ultimate, Shinya Kumazaki, recently posted a photo of the iconic shield from Dragon Quest with the caption ‘the brave’s shield’, which naturally sent the internet into meltdown. Personally, I think Erdrick is pretty much a dead cert for the DLC roster at this point, especially after that Instagram tease.
Thanks for reading!
In the next issue, most likely in the first week of March, I’ll be reviewing the likes of Jump Force, Metro Exodus, Far Cry New Dawn and Anthem, plus giving you a rundown of anything game-y that happens in February! Plus, the new game of the month feature will begin next time, as I explain my choice for January’s best game. Have a fun day. Stay hydrated.

Looking for RP
Tumblr media
So then!
Back to hunting for fresh blood and new faces, as the title goes I’m looking to find some new connections for in-game RP on Balmung. While I’m writing this little primer for the sake of anyone who’d take a personal interest, it should be said that I am in the market for RP groups and organizations as well and would welcome any sort of FC references. I’m interested in just about anything within the bounds of what you’d expect, long term plots or brief novelty one-offs. Format and style are not particularly concerning, tried a bit of everything over the years and I’d be happy to see something new on top of everything else. She is one of my longest running characters so I hope to deliver on any expectations for consistency and availability.
Down to the brass tacks, All about Wyra,
She was born to a nomadic tribe native to the northern Shroud and general area of Coerthas. Though rich in tradition, with her mothers archaic guidance serving as the spiritual center of their small culture, and somewhat more populous than typical Keeper clans besides, they were ultimately little more than self-glorified bandits and poachers often chaffing against the claims of their neighbors.
Although nothing lasts forever and turmoil within the group in her youth forced a flight into more civilized society, leaving her alone, impoverished, and very poorly adjusted. Some years and countless troubles later she found a niche as a gladiator and escaped abject poverty, which has strongly affected her perspectives on personal strength and resilience.
These days she has finally begun to chill the hell out a little. A close circle of friends and spending ample time in quiet self-reflection have dulled the rough corners to her character, leaving a more philosophizing and earnest personality beneath slightly less persistent reservations.  However, none of these developments have come without enduring the burdens of an eventful past. While a number of exorbitantly pricey arrangements have been made since her confession and internment, freedom from Halatali at the patronage of wealthy benefactor leaves ample room to question both her history and future as a self proclaimed knight-errant.
And to wrap it all up,
Having been here there and everywhere over the years, it should be no great trouble on my part to organize a meetup with Wyra, or elaborate on current events should anyone wish to work their way in more organically. I am absolutely eager to clarify any details and consider other arrangements, either to make RP possible or simply create a more conducive setting for it.

Shit I'm in Love with Dramaturgy: Rachelle Elie @ Edfringe 2017
Bawdy Romp through Life, Love and Family with Cheeky Songs About Sex
Rachelle Elie can tell you more about love and relationships than Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna and Katy Perry could ever do – and she’s laying it all on the line.
The Outstanding Canadian Comedy Award winner is bringing her critically acclaimed one-woman show Shit I’m in Love With You Again (SIILWYA) to the Edinburgh Fringe for the first time. Packed with witty observations, tales of embarrassment plus cheeky songs about sex it’s a joyfully bawdy romp through the ups and downs of her life that covers teenage lust, family, marriage, parenthood and therapy.
What was the inspiration for this performance?
For the last 15 years I have been creating and touring one-woman comedy character shows such as Joe: The Perfect Man and Big Girls Don’t Cry. After years of marital distress, my obstetrician/gynaecologist husband and I managed to rescue our love from the cliff’s edge, a recovery that inspired my own story.
I realised I knew more about love and relationships than Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna and Katy Perry could ever know. So six years ago I decided to strip away the characters, get on stage in stand up clubs and find my own voice, a decision that led to Shit I’m in Love With You Again. The show is my life, including my time spent in Kenya where my husband worked in a hospital and I taught art to HIV positive adults shunned by society.
Medical politics forced my husband to resign his post just as I, after making sacrifices and overcoming doubts to accompany him, found my niche and was making a real difference to people’s lives. The rest is history – a history laid bare for all to see on stage. Shit I’m in love With You Again is my first autobiographical show and this is me laying it all on the line.
Is performance still a good space for the public discussion of ideas?
I feel theatre is still one of the best ways to share ideas. What I love about theatre is it is an art form that requires an audience. As a performer I get immediate feedback about whether my idea is being understood and it affects my performance.
With so much social media and texting, face-to-face communication is harder to get but theatre is an old fashioned art form that offers modern present day idea sharing and expression.
How did you become interested in making performance?
From a very early age I would do silly characters to make my siblings laugh. My brother always pushed me to do the characters for others to make them laugh. We would be driving through Florida and he got me to walk up to strangers and do my characters. I got addicted to the laughs.
Those were early performances. By being weird I realised I could affect a stranger’s day. I failed Grade 8 and at that time a guidance counsellor encouraged me to audition for a high school of the arts. I didn’t know it but I was an artist. I got into the art and dance program and thrived.  At 16 I was working as a professional model and at a Ralph Lauren show we were told to completely ignore the audience.
This was impossible to me and that realisation led me to persuing a degree in acting at Bishop’s University. Making performance was something I gravitated towards but as I got older the type of performance I was meant to do became clearer. I went to theatre school to be a serious actress but my true calling has always been to be a clown and to do comedy.
Is there any particular approach to the making of the show?
Every show I have created has had a slightly different approach but most of the time it involves collaboration with clown experts. I have worked with Philippe Gaulier, Sue Morrison, Mike Kennard, James Keylon, Francine Cote, Adam Lazarus, David Shiner and others. T
hese people are masters of clown and physical comedy. When starting a new project I often get in a room with one of these people and start jamming. They help me get clearer with my ideas. I also get on stage as much as I can because the audience will immediately let me know if something is working. I am not a linear thinker so I often work with dramaturges or directors to shape the show.
Once I feel I have at least an hour of strong material I will schedule previews so the show can further develop in front of an audience. I will video those previews and make major cuts at that point.  Friends and family feedback also influences my work.
Does the show fit with your usual productions?
In the past my work has been theatre based and the shows have revolved around over the top characters. This show was developed in front of audiences in stand-up clubs, cabarets and bars. It became clear after hundreds of 5-30 min sets that a new show was in development but I was to be the central figure.
Many comedians will say it takes years to really find your VOICE, after six years of consistent performances and feeling like my comedic voice was surfacing it became clear that I needed to create a new piece. I knew I wanted to perform it in theatres so I returned to my usual approach; to shows which involved several collaborators and mentors.
What do you hope that the audience will experience?
More and more people need to laugh. As a comedian my favourite part of my work is doing just that and I believe this show provides some comic relief. I am also a trained clown. Clowns go too far, push boundaries and talk about things people are usually hesitant to discuss.
I hope audiences jump on board with me when I go into the good the bad and the rauchy experiences of life. My specialty is “being too much” and “going too far” I hope audiences will enjoy my unique brand of comedy developed over the last twenty years that involves storytelling, stand up, clown, characters and acting.
Near the end of the show, when we get more into the crisis of my relationship audiences get to see the worst of me. It is very intimate. I try to always come back to the light of it which is fun because things get crazy and then we laugh about how ugly things got. I had a friend who went through a nasty divorce and at the end of the show he was teary and said he wished he saw the show before they broke up.
Another elderly overweight gentleman said he wished he had "fucked first" in his first marriage. Maybe it would of saved it! I tell the truth about love and relationships and the shows message is that even if a relationship appears to be shit it may be fixable. I hope audiences will laugh and when conflict part of the show comes up that people will relate to my struggle and to my universal message about love.
What strategies did you consider towards shaping this audience experience?
A few years back I discovered Aristotle's “Fryetag's Pyramid". Exposition, Rising action, Climax, Falling action & Resolution. I am not by nature a linear thinker and this tried and true triangle for story development is a strategy that helped me shape my chaotic ideas. Also I perform as much as I can in front of a live audience so that I can ensure my writing and performance are consistently funny for all types of audiences.
Lastly and most importantly as a performer doing what I have to do before a show, to be in the moment with the audience that is in front of me, is crucial to shaping an audiences experience. There is a magical place, a five star place, between an audience and a performer on stage and when I access that place the audience and I have the ultimate experience. I am getting better and better at stepping into that place and it is the part of theatre that is like skydiving: life and death.
The show was a sing and shout-along success across Canada. Mums empathise with the “Ring of Fire” scene where Elie discusses that unforgettable sensation during childbirth, just before the baby arrives.
And we can all learn from the Fuck First ditty and its core message about going to bed together before, rather than after, a romantic restaurant curry.
SIILWYA rips through every key moment from Elie’s fall out with Jesus and enthusiastic embrace of sexual freedom, to true love and a marriage that came within an inch of divorce.
Described by legendary French master clown Philippe Gaulier as “fucking funny”, Elie has won bucket loads of praise. Critics delight at the energy and charm with which she delivers this autobiographical tale. Elie’s comedy can switch in an instant from naivety to raunch and then into the pathos of the realisation that she “loves everything about her husband – even the things that she hates”.
Elie treats universal themes in unexpected ways. She says: “It’s all there from splitting up with Jesus to the need for patience, tolerance and blow jobs in saving your marriage. I know more about long-term relationships than Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna and Katy Perry combined. I’ve been in the trenches of love for 20 years with my husband. We’re raising two boys together. I talk about the things most people are afraid to discuss.”
The songs are co-written with Luke Jackson, who provides live musical accompaniment.

Weekly Summary
Being introduced to 2 new briefs, my previous projects ended up taking a step back whilst I gathered a basic understanding of the outcomes I'll have to be making for my ‘Stop-Motion’ and ‘Digital 3D’ tasks. Working on a week by week basis, this ever-changing brief with much smaller weekly tasks should give me enough time to work around and on my previous briefs which focus on a singular outcome. Establishing what I needed to create week by week, having this time to focus and gather all my potential resources, I can now move forward in the hopes of best time-managing my work to fit around all 6 briefs I'm currently working on.
One month left until the first hand in of our original 3 projects, I feel like the introduction of the new briefs has slightly set me back behind schedule of where I originally wanted to be at this stage in terms of production. Whilst I try to continue to produce my outcomes when I can I fear that too much of my time may be being dedicated to my blog, in an attempt to cover all of the necessary write-ups, weekly summaries and key research to get a higher grade.
Whilst writing up my blog gives me a clear description of what I’ve been working on week by week and has been a large influence in the range of experimentation I’ve been able to create. I fear that it may be slowly taking over the productivity of my final outcomes. I want to make sure that the work I create definitely reflects the additional time I've had by making the most of the additional elements I could add throughout my work.
On the plus side, mixing up the briefs has definitely brought a sense of relief to the production of my work. Whilst I haven't been as focused on the production of my main tasks, it’s been nice to have had the opportunity to mix it up and explore new processes and techniques. Rather than being stuck within the same niche for the upcoming month.
Research Narrative
Our last lecture with Lynsey, this week we covered the final topic of visual storytelling, considering how narrative is portrayed through the use of visual language alone. Crucial to animation, we explored a range of examples that showcase how visual narrative is used to convey meaning to an audience. This basic understanding and premise linked in significantly well with my ‘Digtial Morph’ research as it allowed me to convey how narrative is told through visuals alone, using staging and mise en scene to direct the audience's eyes across the shot leading them through the plot.
This ‘Show, Don’t tell’ strategy is highly prominent in animation, as when it was first commercialised through cartoons of the 1920′s, animation solely relied on the visual language of the narrative until the addition of sound was physically able to be added years down the line.
Although not recording it on my blog, I managed to collect a series of links and primary resources to help support my narrative essay. Although not all are topically related to my chosen film, they cover a range of theories we have covered in our 6 lectures that give me enough material to hopefully discuss in depth the potential impact of their theories upon my chosen narrative.
This is something I hope to develop and create the first draft for in time for my group tutorial with Lynsey and Helen in the upcoming week of Monday the 4th to get my first iteration of feedback from both tutors and peers.
Digital Morphs
With my ‘Digital Morphs’ project temporarily being on the back burner whilst we were introduced to 2 new briefs. The majority of my involvement with this project was making slight adjustments and alterations to the frames I had already animated. To ensure that my animation is as smooth as I originally intended throughout my pre-visualisation. The challenge of replicating this through shape layers is figuring out the spacing between each frame. Transforming my one line based animation to fully block shapes, I’ve found that this has changed the look of my animation and have been using my spare time to rectify any stand out issues that have become prominent in the way in which the overall animation flows.
Although this brief hasn’t been my main focus, I’ve tried to keep updated and consistent with keeping in touch with the after effects file to ensure that I make any adjustments and changes needed where necessary.
With little over a month until our hand-in for the brief, I have a personal goal to complete this project in the next 2 weeks in the hopes that I can focus on producing more content specifically for any other projects that get introduced down the line. I don’t want to rely on having to complete these projects in my own time as we make our way towards the final stretch of our first year and BA1b.
Animated Sketchbook
Much like the previous weeks, I’ve made a slow progression in this project trying to stay consistent in producing an array of pages that show a diversity of techniques. I’ve found that my most favourite technique to pursue so far is creating a variety of Ink Splodges and finding characters within them. Although this task is rather time-consuming I’ve had fun in attempting to transform and elaborate on a series of characters and designs that have come from essentially an original mess.
I reckon that having had to prioritise other projects, this will remain on the backburner until hand in, whilst I believe that I’ll be able to get it done, its a project I don’t believe that I have had the full benefit from and have had more fun developing my own sketchbook that has catered towards the other projects and briefs displayed on my blog already.
Intro to Stop-Motion
Officially introduced to this new brief, I’m thoroughly excited to have the opportunity to explore a new medium. What I found great about this brief in comparison to other have had been introduced in the past, is the opportunity to speak to an animator within the industry using the medium and having the opportunity to play with the medium beforehand. Without the stress and regulation of a brief to guide us, this chance to explore my creativity using the tools alone gave me a much-needed headstart in understanding how the medium differs to that of traditional 2D animation.
Taking this in mind, I appreciate the opportunity to have had explored the medium before given the brief and hope that this method is introduced more down the line when given different projects. It gave me a definite confidence boost in what to expect from the medium and when going back to the basics of a ball bounce I believe it allowed me to produce a range of better outcomes, considering how the medium would best respond to timing and spacing.
I'm excited to see how this brief could develop and how I can go outside my comfort zone to produce a range of experiments that demonstrate my ability to explore and iterate my ideas to create a better outcome.
My only worry with this short 3-week brief is that I don’t want it to oversaturate my workload and take over my main priority that is my animated morph. This is something I will have to learn to balance over the course of the next few weeks.
Intro to Digital 3D
Working throughout the AutoDesk software was surprisingly easier than I expected, although difficult to pick up and quickly use the hotkeys. I found it to be an easily transferable software that demonstrated how I could explore both modelling and animation. Although the outcome I produced in my first week wasn’t as spectacular as I envisioned, I think that having had the opportunity to discuss and explore the possibilities of the software gave me a better understanding than essentially diving straight in, much like we did during the After Effects Morphology project.
With Maya being free software, I am eager to have a try at home to see how I can expand and develop my original ideas to create a more consistent and organic animation. I would be interested to see how I can begin to look at tutorials on LinkedIn Learning using my free subscription provided by NUA to get into the complexities of Maya, as well address modelling and more animation techniques in the upcoming weeks.
Overall, being introduced to 2 new projects gave me a well-needed breather on the progression I had been making on our first 3 projects. I need to consider in the upcoming weeks I best manage my time to balance all 6 projects we currently have to ensure I create the best outcomes for my two upcoming deadlines that cover the first half of BA1b.
To summarise;
In the upcoming weeks, I need to manage my time to best balance all the projects and their outcomes to meet the requirements of each brief.
Catching up on my blog had been quite a daunting task, but having done that I can best attack next week by focusing on producing outcomes.
Whilst my original briefs were on the back burner using stop-motion was a great and fun medium I hadn’t had the opportunity to try before.
In the following week, I need to focus on producing my narrative essay in time for my group reflection to discuss with peers and tutors.

Imagine That: Harems Were Bidirectional
Tumblr media
It is February fourteenth and for those that don't know that means, it is Valentine's Day. So instead of doing something silly like appreciate my loved ones or even spend time with them, I want to just write about the many variations of structure in a romantic relationship. So for this new installment of "Imagine That" I want to look at the harem anime in a different light where there can be a harem for all people involved; essentially making the relationship a lot less funnel shaped, when it comes to the person receiving the majority of attention from several people of the opposite sex.
In many cases harems are very much focused on either one main guy and many girls or the reverse making the appeal of watching these things steered toward a certain demographic, depending on the sex of the person getting the bulk of love. To make this genre work, a lot of times that person's personality is striped and simplified to make that character more like a mirror that reflects, or represents, the view in whatever harem they are in. Of course there are outliers to such a formula -- like The World God Only Know, or Monogatari Series -- but for the most part harems sticks to that pattern pretty wholeheartedly. But what if we where to modify this slightly where both the male and female had multiple partners? Of course their partner might also have some other relationships, which makes it both complex and something new to think about.
Lets Get to Terms
Tumblr media
The term that I'm alluding to is called polyamory. It is something that in compasses both polygyny, many women one man or "regular" harems, and polyandry, many men one women or "reverse" harem. However, both of these types of harems are very much one sided in focus and even less believable. So when we are talking about something like polyamory where it simply means multiple love, this "love tree" instead of looking like a funnel -- that meets at one point -- it will resemble a web. This web has many nodes that represent people and the lines are the relationship between people; also all the nodes don't necessarily need to connect and that is where most of the complexity comes into play. Basically that means that you have multiple relationship with other people, but everyone in this romance web doesn't need to be in a relationship together, or even know each other that well.
What Does Polyamory Mean for Romance Anime?
Tumblr media
Keep in mind that I personally never tried polyamory, so my understanding of it is from the outside looking in, but I'm not apposed to relationships like this.
Like many teenage focused romances, whether that be harem or monogamous, they can be heavily focused on the possession aspect of romance. You hear a lot of common phases like "She's mine" or "my boyfriend", which does tap into the selfishness of what one way relationship are based off of. However, when this connection is no longer one way but two, three, or even more, those statements become far less valid and the focus is more on the current relationship each partner is in.
Of course there are times when the relationship is the focus in non-poly types of relationships, but that specific attribute gets muddied in all the other details of "normal" relationships -- like jealousy, which plays into the possessiveness angle really well.
On the polar opposite end of relationship focused story, there is also the fact that polyamory is very much people focused. I've notice, mostly when it comes to harem relationship, most people apart of it aren't as much of value and can easily be swapped out. For the majority of harems the people involve are niche driven, making most people simpler, and that also includes the previously noted main love interest who can be consider a stand in for yourself. Now, I don't think by having something like polyamory in anime would change the natural use of simple characters and simple relationships, but this type of poly romance has a separation of self from the multiple relationship you are in -- simply because the people involved need to be selfless, for the most part, for these multiple relationships to foster.
Whether or not that actually gets covered in a possible anime about polyamory is really up to the people creating it. But I will be honest and say that Japan will most likely never cover this type subject, but I like keeping my hopes up.
Why Japan Hasn't Tackled Polyamory?
Tumblr media
When it comes to social stance, Japan tends to lean on the conservative side of things. Things that are deemed deviant, or outside the norm, quickly get frowned upon. So with that type of audience, it wouldn't be that easy to find this type of romantic relationship in a romance -- matter of fact, I'm not sure I see it here in the west either. Which is pretty sad to see, but unpopular things don't get made, plus monogamous and harem relationships are what people are far more intrigued by.
The second reason, to piggyback off of what is popular, the reason many people like those types of relationships is because it is relatable. The concept of share your love is unfathomable to most people, making it a difficult task to convey to others who don't practice polyamory. Especially with a lot of the media conveying love as something that where is that one special person who is out there for you and only you; or in the case of most harems, it is a one-sided sharing situation, but never dual-sided.
In the end there probably wont be any poly romances outside of the harem, simply because it is mostly a dream come true type of scenario, but it is still fun to speculate what might happen regardless. So I guess spread the love?
Imagine that.

Do you think you could do a MHA matchup for me?
Appearance:
I guess first of all, I’m non binary (they/them). I’m about 5’7, super pale, and have short brown hair and glasses. I’m on the heavier side and usually dress in some combination of a dark hoodie, ripped black jeans, and combat boots. I also have several piercings and eye bags so dark I look like I got punched in the face.
Personality:
I’m a Scorpio and an INTJ if that helps at all, very introverted, and very snarky. While I barely talk to anyone, people I do know have to endure a lot of sarcasm and teasing. This in combination with my monotonous voice and blunt manner of speaking tends to result in people struggling to tell if I’m joking. I’m tired all the time and have no problem with falling asleep in random places. I really struggle with trusting and connecting with other people, due in part to past bullying and abuse as well as just general disposition. I’ve got severe resting bitch face, which makes most people think I’m either depressed or really pissed off at them all the time (I’ve been told by several people that they thought I hated them). I don’t know how to deal with issues emotionally so every traumatic situation or tragedy ends up getting joked about excessively. My only two settings are 1. Melodramatic cynical nihilist discussing the futility of human existence and 2. Prankster that never grew out of children’s media. I only live out of spite and a desire to prove people wrong. My top kins are Aizawa, Max (Camp Camp), and Catra (SPOP).
Interests:
If it doesn’t involve physical activity, I’m in. For the normal hobbies, I read, sketch, and watch a lot of cartoons and horror films. I love music (although I’m completely tone deaf and can’t sing or play an instrument) especially indie, post hardcore, emo, and folk punk. Indie games (especially indie horror) are a guilty pleasure. My ideal date is ghost hunting in an abandoned building or hanging out in the forest. For more niche interests, I collect animal bones, own reptiles and have a stable isopod colony, and love talking about the Paleozoic.
(Romantically, I’m fine with any gender in a partner)
Tumblr media
Thank you so much for waiting so patiently, it’s always nice to see another INTJ- I hope you enjoy it! I had fun writing this :)
I pair you up with Mellisa Shield!
- Your quirk is Ghost whisperer! You have the power to see and talk to spirits of dead people, and you can borrow their quirk by letting them control your physical body (Your consciousness is also within the body at the same time. Think of it as 2 consciousnesses fusing together in 1 body). Most spirits are willing to lend you their quirks since they are very eager to step foot on earth again with a physical body (and you technically don’t even have to ask, since you have to power to fuse together whenever you want to) Furthermore, you can call your spirits whenever you want, wherever you are. There’s really no limit to this quirk, since your ghost friends can give you any information you’d like, since they are invisible to the naked eye.
- You met Mellisa when you visited I-island with your 1-A friends. You weren’t too keen on going outside and exploring the whole day, but you were interested in the new technology. Then you met Mellisa through Deku, who immediately became interested in you.
- You guys ended up going to her room and started hitting off immediately- which was rare for you. It was easy to open up to her kind nature- but you denied it at first. She gave you insights into her gadgets and she was inspired by your quirk. You were just mesmerized by her intelligence.
- She took you to the party too, which was almost enjoyable until the villain’s came to attack. You saved Mellisa in a dangerous situation, letting her heart beat faster than before
- After the villain incident at the expo, you tried your best to comfort the girl before leaving the I-island. Normally, leaving was a thing you loved to do, but for some reason letting Mellisa go was hard for you. Before you parted your ways, Mellisa asked if she could still talk to you, by asking for your number
- After that, you guys started talking. First it was by text. Simple ‘hello’ and ‘how are you’ soon transitioned to late night calls and video chats. It was amazing how she opened up a new side of you- and how she was so happy to see you. You had many things in common with her, such as high intelligence and the desire for learning
- After confessing to each other, You guys agreed upon a long distance relationship, and ever since then you guys have been the most creative couple ever. Creating gadgets for quirks, sketching hero costumes… designing characters while watching horror films- and to your surprise, Mellisa is awfully good at watching scary things
- You guys visit each other as much as possible, going on dates and talking about the possibilities of the future. You love her so much, and she loves you even more- always knowing what each other needs
- Overall, it feels like destiny. You guys were meant to meet each other- and both of you are happy to call each other soulmates :)
Scenario: First time meeting!
“Are you alright? You seem tired.” Asked the blondie. It was a question you got too often- at least she was trying to help. “I’m fine.” You muttered, the words coming a bit more harshly then you had intended. ‘Please don’t be mean to the hot girl.’ You thought to yourself. The girl didn’t seem to mind at all. “Hmm, if you need any sleep, I’d be happy to lend you my room! There’s plenty of time before the party.” ‘There’s a party…?’ You sighed- parties weren't exactly your idea of a vacation. “I didn’t bring anything fancy for a party.” You replied. The girl grabbed your hand with a smile. “I’ll lend you something! You have to come to the party, it’s the highlight of the expo- come!” She started pulling you- and normally you would have told them to kindly fuck off- but something about her made you shut up. “Someone’s got a crush~” said a voice following you. Sometimes your quirk was a bother- since some spirits were very annoying. “Leave.” You ordered, intending it at the immature spirit. The blonde turned around. “Hmm?” You shook your head. “Not you- it’s my quirk. I can see… dead people.” You explained, slightly embarrassed that you had such a quirk. However, her response wasn’t something you were intuitive of. “That’s so interesting. Tell me more! How do you use them in a battle?” She asked. You were taken back for a moment by such a positive response to your quirk. “I can borrow their quirk by fusing them to my body… what’s your quirk?” You changed the subject to her, not knowing how to deal with the attention on you. “I don’t have one.” Oh. You stared. “With your intelligence, you don’t need a quirk.” You replied, attempting to give a compliment. She giggled, making you smile a bit. “I’m Mellisa Shield!” She extended her hand, and you took it. “I’m (Y/N).”
Perhaps the spirit was right. It might be a crush after all.
Song: The Space For This by Cynic!
I hope you liked it! I hoped you liked the quirk- please let me know what you thought about the work! Thank you for requesting, and I hope to see you again soon :)

“The mind may err, but never the blood.”
It was a cold winter morning. Yukie had been dedicating herself to writing, by herself, on the music room of Hope’s Peak Academy. This early in the morning, there wasn’t supposed to be anyone besides herself—hearing those words, she turned her head slightly, allowing herself to associate the face with the voice. Her guess was right; the one that had given her such a quote was, standing in the doorway, none other than Ryuunosuke Kinoto.
Saying that he was frail was beyond an understatement. His pale skin could be likened to that of someone who was fighting to even breathe another breath, his horribly sickly face only darkened by deep eyebags below his eyes. He wore a black kimono, so unlike the figure of a teenager you would have during this century, and he always sported the same blood-red scarf around his neck. He looked at everyone with the same silently judgemental expression over his glasses, like it was a sore to his deep purple eyes to even see his classmates.
How did she know that much? Well, she observed, and from that she took her conclusions. He was standoffish, and had been shown to avoid and disregard attempts at social interactions at all costs. So it was a surprise that the otherwise aloof Ryuunosuke had spoken to her.
With grace, she closed the notebook she had in hands, before turning her body towards him; stay calm, she repeated over and over. It’s a fellow classmate, not a seven-headed monster. “Nakajima Atsushi, was it?”
“Mhm-hm,” Ryuunosuke nodded, before entering the room. He stood, rather awkwardly, instead of taking a seat near her or on the available chairs. “Not a favorite of mine, like my namesake, Akutagawa… but he had good stories nevertheless, and this is my favorite of his quotes. And it applies to Kisarijo-san.”
“It does?” Surprised by that, she gave him a slight smile, though it could be seen she was more condescending than she wanted to come off as. Yukie was quick to catch on to that, before smoothing her uniform skirt and sitting again, regaining her posture. “If you would mind to tell me what you mean by that, I would be very happy to hear.”
The boy, wordlessly, offered his hand to her. Yukie… didn’t understand the intent. What did he want? A handshake? To hold her hand? Did he want her to hand him something? All she had was her notebook and her pen. Blinking, the perplexed detective looked from one side to the other, trying to figure out what he could possibly want—
“The notebook,” He finally said. For someone as unexpressive as himself, his voice was… unexpectedly soft.
“The notebook,” She repeated, hurrying to grab the small object and hand it over to her classmate. While she didn’t want that… he did seem like he wanted to see it, and it wasn’t just a small amount of curiosity.
Flipping through the pages, Ryuunosuke didn’t slow down until the most recent entries. They were, admittedly, not on his field of expertise; Yukie had read his work before, and it was far removed from the detective stories she wrote on her free time. His writing was, to say the least, beautiful. It paid close attention to the formatting of each sentence, so it had a rhythmical, almost poetic flavor to it. The structure of the stories were involving, and it was one of the first types of short stories that captivated her without appealing to interests she already held. Of course, that didn’t mean he neglected the plot: though they were for a niche audience, considering how heavy and usually grotesque his tales were, they brought interesting characters and settings hard to not get attached to. Having someone of such high caliber judging her stories… was it really okay to let that happen? A small knot of self-consciousness began to grow inside of her stomach, as she watched the skilled writer read her work.
He closed the book, delicately, before looking back at Yukie. Somehow, his eyes seemed far more intimidating now. “Just as I thought. It’s absolute, unfiltered garbage.”
The detective didn’t know what she expected, but the frustration and anger in Kinoto’s words were, most certainly, not what she was waiting for. She averted her eyes, unsure of what to say when confronted by the great literary genius. Instead, her eyes focused on his hand, that flicked the cover of her notebook.
“A writer such as Doyle-san, who specializes in mystery, would be most suited for this—but what bothers me isn’t the tricks or the mystery of the individual story, but the way you write. Doyle-san would undoubtedly say it’s because it lacks ‘realism’, on her definition, real life experience. To me, it’s simply garbage,”
Yukie prepared herself for more harsh words, only to receive… well, that.
“Because you limit yourself.”
“…Huh?” Yukie looked up at him. Ryuunosuke had an expression difficult to read, but it was far from the anger he had shown. Perhaps resignation? Regardless, he seemed fairly calm in comparison to his previous sentences, as he opened the notebook once again.
“You… overthink it,” He explained, as he pointed at the pages vaguely. “You try to make it perfect on the first try, though that’s impossible. You try to rationalize your writing to the point it loses flavor, it loses substance. You attempt to make a perfect ‘story’, but there is no such a thing, and you sacrifice the feeling you put into it instead. That is why, you should trust yourself more. You have potential—your writing is impeccable, it’s engrossing, and you have a good sense of how to handle the foreshadowing you think of. But you waste that potential into trying to make the dialogue serve the plot at all moments, keeping ‘unnecessary’ character-building scenes out of the way, and describing things as shortly as possible. If I wasn’t able to look past those things, which most won’t do, I would put this notebook down and never glance at it again.”
Yukie… didn’t quite know how to feel about it. On one hand, it was harsh criticism, the type that stuck deep within her and hurt more than disinterest. On the other hand… he acknowledged her potential and what she did well, also telling her on what she could improve. She understood what he had meant. However, there was something that didn’t sit right with her.
“…But you said it relates to me,” The Kisarijo eventually said, glancing at Ryuunosuke with the corner of her eyes. “Are you saying I have this problem as a person, as well?”
The ravenette went silent. It was another long pause, as if he needed to gather his thoughts before speaking. Yukie could relate to that; he didn’t seem to be avoiding the topic, but rather trying to find the best way to relay his message to the other. With both hands on his lap, where the notebook rested, he took a deep breath, and opened his mouth again.
“There was… this boy, who was the son of a friend of my father’s,” He began, in a meeker tone than before. It was impressive, how emotionally filled was his speech, contrary to his expressions. “He was completely serious. All the time, he would act like a rock, without any emotions. I could tell that he, like myself, was trying to be something he wasn’t. And I taught him that he didn’t have to do it, despite how much his parents forced him into a box, as long as he created another ‘self’. I believe you, too, would benefit from that.”
“Another… self?” She raised an eyebrow, listening closely to what he told her. “But I am ‘me’. Such trivialities as emotions or relationships, they are beyond a detective—”
“Then don’t be a detective.”
The Ultimate Consulting Detective, hearing that, frowned deeply. She was about to explode with him, having taken that much more personally than expected, but she was interrupted by the author’s speech.
“I’m not telling you to quit your passion,” He reassured, before continuing, “I am telling you to keep your detective life, as Yukie Kisarijo… separate from the side of you that feels and bleeds like everyone else. Separate yourself from the cold and calculating side of your occupation, so you can keep… some semblance of the humanity you wish to hide. You needn’t flaunt that other side as soon as you are away from your job, but you needn’t hide yourself from your own heart.”
“How can I be anyone other than myself, though? I’m Yukie Kisarijo, the Ultimate Consulting Detective,” She stubbornly replied, like it was the most important fact. Meanwhile, Ryuunosuke opened the notebook, before scribbling down her name.
Yukie. The kanji for ‘snow’ and the kanji for ‘picture’. It wasn’t an uncommon name, but it wasn’t so popular either. She didn’t understand what that would accomplish; he was just writing her name down. And then—
“Ah—!”
He scribbled out the ‘e’, leaving only the word for snow.
“…a blank slate, where you can pour any emotion you wish, pure and simple like snow,” He muttered, before showing the page for her. For the first time since they met, he had… a smile, just as pure as what he was describing. A way to keep yourself happy, even when you have to be someone that hurts you… “Just like I am ‘Ryuu’, you can perhaps be that snow (Yuki).”
That odd boy became a close friend of hers after that day. The weirdly sentimental and kind Ryuu, that presented himself to those he had grown fond of, and the Ryuunosuke that had a hard time expressing himself and easily snapped at others when provoked, despite never losing his noble and serious attitude. Both of those were, in their own way, endearing. Both of those were, for their own reasons, her friend and classmate.
What an odd memory, of an odd boy, that tried to teach her on his own odd way that she could try and become whoever she wanted, without fear.

An Introduction
When it comes to Star Wars, I grew up in a strange period of purgatory.  Unlike the kids of the 70’s and the 80’s, (the latter of which only comprising the first three years of my life), I have no memories of seeing any of the original films in theaters. But neither did I spend my golden years surrounded by the omnipresence that is Star Wars, like the children of today.  My earliest memories of Star Wars come from commercials for Micro Machines’ “Star Wars Action Sets,” or the odd clip featured on Muppet Babies. It wasn’t until I was nearing 7 years old that my father was prompted by the promotional sale of THX’s digitally remastered VHS release to buy these movies on a lark, and show them to my sister and I.
youtube
In later years, I would collect each and every one of these, in lieu of any of the Kenner line.  They imprinted on me, early.
Now, my father is not the ubergeek that I am. This was a guy who owns his own construction business, loves college football and was the quintessential jock, growing up. In my youngest years, I do recall him being a fan of Star Trek - The Next Generation, but aside from that, he didn’t, and still doesn’t, bear the trappings of what we would recognize as “nerd culture.”  And yet, even so, he had a sneaking suspicion that we might appreciate these movies. Little did he know he was creating a monster. My sister and I sat glued to the TV as we binged both A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, periodically taking breaks to run upstairs from the TV room and re-enact our favorite scenes. For the record, I do remember the revelation of Vader’s true identity spoiled for me long before I ever saw the movie.
Tumblr media
"Well, thank you, Mr. Blow-The-Picture-for-Me.”
Of course, the day after that was Sunday, which meant we were both returning to our Mother’s house, after spending the weekend with Dad.  My parents had divorced a few years prior, which meant that every other weekend we spent with my father, while the remainder of the time, we lived with her. This, of course, meant that it was going to be another two weeks before I got to figure out what happened in Return of the Jedi. It was agony. I couldn’t focus in school, (not that I was overly concerned with that, anyway), none of my friends had seen any of them, so I couldn’t even talk with them about that, and, of course, this was a time before the ubiquity of the internet, so looking up spoilers wasn’t even an option. After a few days, I begged and pleaded with my mom to take me to Blockbuster Video so that we could rent the third movie.  They didn’t have it.  Not that it was already on loan...they simply didn’t have a copy in stock.
Tumblr media
And apparently, insisting my mother buy me ANOTHER copy of the trilogy was “unreasonable.”
Finally, the two weeks were up, and after a grueling two-hour car ride to Chatham County, North Carolina, I threw my copy of Return of the Jedi into the VCR and sat with my sister to watch.  It was pure catharsis. The fear, the anxiety, the uncertainty about the future that Luke must have felt between episodes V and VI was mirrored in my own grip of suspense, and when the Jedi finally returned, he did so with gusto.  To my relief, Luke did not end up killing his father, but instead, met a form of reconciliation. A realization that despite their differences, Luke and Anakin were more alike than perhaps either of them initially realized. It hit me very close to home. After all, if there was hope for Vader and Luke, perhaps there was hope for me and my father, as well.
My father and I’s relationship was complex, to say the least. As mentioned previously, we could not have been more different in terms of interests and hobbies. For that matter, we often found ourselves butting heads more often than not. As a child of divorced parents, especially at such a young age, I had my fair share of trust issues that manifested themselves in assorted ways. And my father’s patience could sometimes be very thin. In retrospect, I feel that he did the best that he could, and I certainly didn’t make things any easier on my part. My desires to dream big often came at the cost of my focus on reality. In short, the idea of staying on the farm, fixing Moisture Vaporators seemed like agony, while I’d rather be playing with my Skyhopper.
Tumblr media
“Ptew! Ptew! Take that, Womprat!”
Much like the aforementioned pair, my father and I did eventually grow to a more mutual understanding that came with age and maturity, on both of our parts, and a developing sense of compromise. However when the credits rolled for the final time, I remember being struck with the strongest sense of depression. After all, it was over. There were no more adventures to be had. Of course, there were rumors, at the time, of the prequel trilogy coming to light, soon...but those were many years incoming. Until my next trip to the library revealed to me that the adventures had not ended...they had only begun.
Tumblr media
While far from the first written, Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn Trilogy books certainly among the most popular and groundbreaking.
My sister, being a bit older than me, was able to tear through Timothy Zahn’s Heir to the Empire and subsequent books, while I tried to occupy myself with slightly easier fare.  I tore through Kevin J. Anderson’s Young Jedi Knights series the way kids today absorb Harry Potter. Which doesn’t surprise me, as from a narrative standpoint, the two bear very striking similarities. For the record, I’d take training on Yavin IV with Luke Skywalker over a letter from Hogwarts any day of the week. As for creating my own stories, my stepmother worked for a distribution company that focused on memorabilia, and as such, I had access to not only toys but trading cards, posters, cardboard standups, everything.  And of course, at the time, catalogs and special orders were the only place where such things could be procured. Christmas of that year consisted of nothing but Star Wars.
Tumblr media
Imagine, if you can, a time when Star Wars merchandise was hard to come by.
I finally got to see my favorite movies on the big screen once again when in 1997, the Original Trilogy was re-released into theaters for the Special Edition. Seeing the updated special effects was...kind of cool, but I never felt there was anything particularly wrong with them in the first place. Spoiled by such realistic effects as seen in Jurassic Park, their dated hokiness only added to their charm. To me, it was somehow more impressive that they were able to do all of that without computers. But the bonus side-effect of the Special Edition was the bringing of Star Wars back into the cultural spotlight. Not only did toys return to the shelves, but games like Rebel Assault II and Masters of Teräs Käsi for the Sony Playstation gave these weird little movies that only I seemed to love a sense of legitimacy.
Tumblr media
Ahh, Masters of Teräs Käsi, the fighting game that gave players control of their favorite Star Wars characters. Like Luke, Leia, Chewbecca, and of course, the unfortunately monikered Hoar.
Of course, being a kid, I didn’t have much of the geeky sense of ownership that comes with a niche interest becoming more mainstream.  To me, I was simply thankful that my friends were starting to take an interest. Within a few years, speculation began to stir about the impending release of Star Wars: Episode I. And then came the day that the trailer dropped. I remember waiting hours, on my dial-up connection, for a grainy trailer to load, playing whatever footage had already buffered over and over again until finally getting to watch the entire trailer from start to finish. Now, in my older, more cynical times, I would cringe at the enthusiasm that I expressed for The Phantom Menace, but of course, at the time, I was simply happy to see another Star Wars movie.  And while my first love shall always remain the originals, in spite of myself, I can’t outright say that I am capable of hating any of them.
Tumblr media
Hate does, after all, lead to suffering…
It seems almost embarrassing to say that most of my passions can be sourced, in some way, from Star Wars. My love for reading developed from both the previously mentioned Young Adult novels and also Lord of the Rings, books that were recommended to me simply because of my love of Star Wars. I grew up from playing “the Adventures of Luke and Leia” with my sister to telling my own stories via many of the Star Wars Role-Playing Games that have come out across the years, (and continue to do so, to this day.) My admiration for Voice Acting coming from the sheer astonishment that the guy who voiced the Joker in my favorite cartoon also played Luke Skywalker. And my love of filmmaking can be traced back to the puppetry and special effects utilized in the originals. Indeed, this blog, a Star Wars blog, is the conduit through which to pursue my passion for writing.
With movies being released, television shows in development and/or production, numerous comic book titles published by Marvel, and full-length novels being written on the regular, this franchise - which started out as three simple movies - only seems to be getting bigger by the day. This blog, for the most part, is an exploration of the stories that exist within the Star Wars canon. An exploration of the overarching story of the Skywalker family, and the struggles of the Light against the Dark. In addition to that, however, it is also an insight into the fandom of Star Wars, itself, and just what it is about these stories that want us to create our own. Whether you love the prequels, or hate them; whether the idea of a new generation of Star Wars fans delights or repulses you, and whether the codifying and quantifying of canon versus Legends is a source of relief or frustration -- we all want to live, if only for an hour or two, in a Galaxy Far, Far Away...
