Research Report Proposal - Visual Research:
After attending the lecture about the history of comic books, I decided to look at character designs from literature and comics to see how character design was interpret, and compare this to animation.
One of the most famous stories with illustrations is Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865), with well-known characters like The White Rabbit and The Cheshire Cat. Sir John Tenniel’s illustrations [1-3] help to create a clearer interpretation of both the characters and the environment of Wonderland, using shading for details like fur and clothing textures. The animal characters mostly resemble their real-life counterparts, and wear human-like clothing to exaggerate their separation from realism. The character designs are simplistic, and rely on their clothing and/or ‘iconic elements’, which could be an object or their personality, i.e the Rabbit’s pocket watch; The Cat’s grin etc. to be recognisable from other characters of the same species. Alice’s dress is also iconic, and remains the same in most versions of the story. This shows that characters can be recognisable by the clothing they wear, that separates them from other characters, and in some cases, the same species. The characters’ designs are simple, which makes them easier to transfer into an animated format, as seen with Disney’s 1951 version [4-5]. The simplistic designs of the characters means that they are instantly recognisable, and I think that it is their unique designs, as well as their personality, that makes them appealing. Alice’s innocent nature is reflected by her clothing - they resemble a children’s doll. Disney’s simplistic style helps to maintain the characters’ appeal, whilst condensing their more complicated components of their clothing to make the production time quicker, as each character and the elements of their design were drawn on each frame by hand.
I have been researching the earliest characters that resemble a character ‘design’ to see how they were interpret and what has remained consistent with character designs today. From my research, I have found that one of the earliest character designs is a character called Dr. Syntax, a caricature who is considered to be based on William Gilpin. Syntax, created around 1809, wears a black outfit and hat with a white feather in it. The first story written about Dr Syntax, The Tour of Dr. Syntax in Search of the Picturesque (1809), could be a reference to Gilpin’s An Essay Upon Prints (1768) and Uvedale Price’s Essays on the Picturesque (1810). Gilpin’s work defines the meaning of the word ‘picturesque’, and how an image is comprised to be appealing.
‘Picturesque: a term expressive of that peculiar kind of beauty, which is agreeable in a picture.’ (Gilpin, 1768, p.[ix] X)
‘Design: in its strict sense, applied chiefly to drawing...in its most enlarged one, sometimes taken for a picture in general.’ (Gilpin, 1768, p.[ix])
Glipin states that: ‘To make a print agreeable as a whole, a just observance of those rules is necessary, which relate to design, disposition, keeping, and the distribution of light: to make it agreeable in its parts, of those which relate to drawing, expression, grace and perspective. We consider the whole before its parts. (p.2.) This suggests that in order to make a whole image, many other elements are considered. I think that this can apply to character design, as the ‘design’ is not only what the character looks like, but also how they act and how we emphathise with them. In terms of design, Gilpin states that: ‘By design... we mean the general conduct of the piece as a representation of such a particular story. It answers, in a historical relation of a fact to a judicious choice of circumstances, and includes a proper time, proper characters, the most affecting manner of introducing those characters, and proper appendages’ (p.3). He continues to state how different elements make up a good painting, such as the placement of primary characters, as well as how lighting and shading can effect the final piece. I think that this is information is beneficial to me as it is one of the earliest examples discussing character design relation to composition and appeal. When analysing characters for my report, I can compare their design to Gilpin’s definitions to see how designs have maintained some of his ideals, and how some elements have changed over time. This will allow me to refer and compare historical evidence against my visual research.
Judicious - [to show or have created] something good, i.e with accuracy.

Advanced Hack: How to Improve Your SEO in Less Than 30 Minutes
I’ve been testing a new SEO hack and it works no matter how old or how new your site is.
Heck, you can have barely any links, and I’ve found it to work as well.
Best of all, unlike most SEO changes, it doesn’t take months or years to see results from this… you can literally see results in less than 30 minutes.
And here’s what’s crazy: I had my team crawl 10,000 sites to see how many people are leveraging this SEO technique and it was only 17.
In other words, your competition doesn’t know about this yet!
So what is this hack that I speak of?
Google’s ever-changing search results
Not only is Google changing its algorithm on a regular basis, but they also test out new design elements.
For example, if you search for “food near me”, you’ll not only see a list of restaurants but you also see their ratings.
And if you look up a person, Google may show you a picture of that person and a quick overview.
Over the years, Google has adapted its search results to give you the best experience. For example, if you search “2+2” Google will show you the answer of 4” so you don’t have to click through and head over to a webpage.
But you already know this.
Now, what’s new that no one is really using are FAQ-rich results and Answer Cards.
Here’s what I mean… if you search “digital marketing” you’ll see that I rank on Google. But my listing doesn’t look like most people’s…
As you can see from the image above, Google has pulled FAQ rich results from my site.
And best of all, I was able to pull it off in less than 30 minutes. That’s how quickly Google picked it up and adjusted their SERP listing.
Literally all within 30 minutes.
And you can do the same thing through Answer Cards anytime you have pages related to question and answers.
So how can you do this?
Picking the right markup
Before we get this going with your site, you have to pick the right schema markup.
FAQpage schema is used when you offer a Frequently Asked Question page or have a product page that contains frequently asked questions about the product itself. This will let you be eligible for a collapsible menu under your SERP with the question, that when clicked on, reveals the answer.
It can also let you be eligible for FAQ Action that is shown on Google Assistant. This can potentially help get you noticed by people using voice search to find out an answer!
Q&A schema is used when people are contributing different types of answers and can vote for which answer they think is the best. This will provide the rich result cads under your SERP and shows all the answers, with the top answer highlighted.
After making sure you understand what these are used for, Google also has additional guidelines on when you can and can’t use these schema’s for:
Google’s guidelines
Google has a list of FAQpage schema guidelines.
Only use FAQPage if your page has a list of questions with answers. If your page has a single question and users can submit alternative answers, use QAPage instead. Here are some examples:
Valid use cases:
An FAQ page was written by the site itself with no way for users to submit alternative answers
A product support page that lists FAQs with no way for users to submit alternative answers
Invalid use cases:
A forum page where users can submit answers to a single question
A product support page where users can submit answers to a single question
A product page where users can submit multiple questions and answers on a single page
Don’t use FAQPagefor advertising purposes
Make sure each Questionincludes the entire text of the question and make sure each answer includes the entire text of the answer. The entire question text and answer text may be displayed.
Question and answer content may not be displayed as a rich result if it contains any of the following types of content: obscene, profane, sexually explicit, graphically violent, promotion of dangerous or illegal activities, or hateful or harassing language.
All FAQcontent must be visible to the user on the source page.
And here are the guidelines for Q&A schema:
Only use the QAPage markup if your page has information in a question and answer format, which is one question followed by its answers.
Users must be able to submit answers to the question. Don’t use QAPage markup for content that has only one answer for a given question with no way for users to add alternative answers; instead, use FAQPage. Here are some examples:
Valid use cases:
A forum page where users can submit answers to a single question
A product support page where users can submit answers to a single question
Invalid use cases:
An FAQ page was written by the site itself with no way for users to submit alternative answers
A product page where users can submit multiple questions and answers on a single page
A how-to guide that answers a question
A blog post that answers a question
An essay that answers a question
Don’t apply QAPagemarkup to all pages on a site or forum if not all the content is eligible. For example, a forum may have lots of questions posted, which are individually eligible for the markup. However, if the forum also has pages that are not questions, those pages are not eligible.
Don’t use QAPagemarkup for FAQ pages or pages where there are multiple questions per page. QAPagemarkup is for pages where the focus of the page is a single question and its answers.
Don’t use QAPagemarkup for advertising purposes.
Make sure each Questionincludes the entire text of the question and make sure each Answer includes the entire text of the answer.
Answermarkup is for answers to the question, not for comments on the question or comments on other answers. Don’t mark up non-answer comments as an answer.
Question and answer content may not be displayed as a rich result if it contains any of the following types of content: obscene, profane, sexually explicit, graphically violent, promotion of dangerous or illegal activities, or hateful or harassing language.
If your content meets these guidelines, the next step is to figure out how to implement the schema onto your website and which type to use.
How do I implement Schema and which to use?
There are two ways to implement it… either through JSON-LD or Microdata.
I recommend choosing one style and sticking to it throughout your webpage, and I also recommend not using both types on the same page.
JSON-LD is what Google recommends wherever possible and Google has been in the process of adding support for markup-powered features. JSON-LD can be implemented into the header of your content and can take very little time to implement.
The other option is Microdata, which involves coding elements into your website. This can be a challenging process for some odd reason, I prefer it. Below are examples of how each work.
FAQpage Schema JSON-LD:

When you are implementing it on your website, feel free and just use the templates above and modify them with your content.
If you are unsure if your code is correctly implemented or not, use Google’s Structured Data Testing Tool and you can add your code snippet or the page that you implemented the schema on and it will tell you if you did it right or wrong.
Plus it will give you feedback on if there are any errors or issues with your code.
You can also try Google’s Rich Result Tester. This will give you a brief look at how your structured data will look like in the results!
Getting results in under 30 minutes
Once you make the changes to any page that you think is a good fit, you’ll want to log into Google Search Console and enter the URL of the page you modified in the top search bar.
You’ll then want to have Google crawl that page so they can index the results. All you have to do is click “request indexing”.
And typically within 10 minutes, you’ll notice it kick in and when you perform a Google search you’ll see your updated listing.
Now the key to making this work is to do this with pages and terms that already rank on page 1. That’s where I’ve seen the biggest improvement.
Will Schema get me to rank for People Also Ask and Featured Snippets?
Will this help with People Also Ask and Featured Snippets? So far, there has been no correlation between schema markup and People Also Ask or Featured Snippets and you do not need them to be featured in them.
Optimizing your content for this will not hurt you though and can potentially improve your chances to be on here.
Google has been testing out how they can show these types of Q&A, FAQ, and How-To results and looking at structured data to help understand them.
It’s better to be early to the game and help Google understand your pages, as well as possibly participating in any of Google’s experiments.
Will this get me on voice search?
With more and more people using mobile devices to find answers to questions, this is a very relevant question!
Especially considering that over half of the searches on Google will be from voice search in the near future.
Answers from voice search get most of their answers from featured snippets.
And adding structured data on your website increases the chances of getting you into featured snippets, which increases the chance of you getting featured on voice search.
Conclusion
This simple hack can potentially increase the visibility of your brand and help improve the authority of your website. It’s a simple solution that can take a single day to implement across your main question, product, or FAQ page.
I’ve been using it heavily for the last week or so and as long as I pick keywords that I already rank on page 1 for, I am seeing great results.
And as I mentioned above, when my team analyzed 10,000 sites we only found 17 to be using FAQ and QA schema. In other words, less than 1% of the sites are using this, which means you if you take advantage now, you’ll have the leg up on your competition.
So what do you think about this tactic? Are you going to use it?

Hello!
Greetings, dear Tumblr! I haven’t been active on here in a very long time. I wanted to write this post to explain where I’ve been, what I’m working on, and what’s going on with the future of this blog.
First things first, as I referenced late-last year, I moved back to Germany. (I say “back” because I’d spent my first tentative months here back in 2014.) This time, I came with the intention of staying long-term, so I had to apply for a work permit. That process took me nearly half a year, plus another 2 months before I got an official “tax number” (something freelancers are required to have), and in between all of the appointments, portfolio-building, etc., I have also spent a LOT of time looking for housing. Berlin’s housing market is tough, and since September of last year, I haven’t spent more than about 3 months in any given place. Constant moving/apartment searching is not my preferred way to spend vast stretches of my time when I could be living my life and pursuing my passions instead, but, alas, sometimes that stuff just needs to be done.
In the middle of this process — sometime back in November — I began having very odd problems with Tumblr. It was glitching to the point that I could do practically nothing with the site. I couldn’t even log out (without an interminable freeze) to try logging back in again! If I were tech-savvy, this might not have been an issue, but I’m not, so this went on until at least sometime in December, at which point I decided, “You know what? Maybe I’m just not meant to be blogging here right now.” I took that as a sign to focus my attentions elsewhere for the time being.
At this point, I am now officially a resident of Germany, with permission to work as a freelance “Editor, Writer, und Writing Consultant.” I had to spend a lot of time building up my editing business in order to make a solid case for myself with the immigration bureau, and I mostly put writing and card reading aside while I was getting on my feet and pulling my application portfolio together. I specialize as an academic copyeditor with a strong focus also on editing creative work (e.g., personal essays, websites). You can read more about the editing I do here. As for the “Writer” bit, I haven’t branched out yet into the world of writing original pieces for pay, but writing is my dream, so hopefully I’ll be moving in that direction soon. In the mean time, since I deliver tarot readings as written reports, I am still able to offer readings. (More on my tarot readings in a moment.) And the “Writing Consultant” bit on my work permit. . . well, that’s basically just an aspect of my editing work; I blend my teaching and editing experience with insights from creative writing study in order to help clients become stronger writers themselves. I love helping people become more confident and effective communicators, as well as — when we are working together on memoir-style narratives of theirs — helping them to find a deeper sense of meaning in and appreciation for their own life stories. So, these are some of the things I am allowed to do to support myself here on this visa. If you ever need editing help, if you want a coach for writing (or personal development through writing), if you’d like a tarot reading, or if you would like to hire me to write an article, please let me know!
Back to tarot: as mentioned, I spent a long time focusing almost exclusively on building my editing business. I sometimes find it difficult to switch between the analytical mindset of academic editing and the intuitive/creative mindset of tarot reading, and since the editing work makes an easier sell with immigration officials, I prioritized that. At the same time, my life circumstances, for a while now, haven’t been very conducive to the downtime, alone time, and/or grounding work I find to be an integral part of maintaining the clear mind and peaceful heart from which I prefer to offer guidance. As I focused so intensely on basic survival/immigration concerns (e.g., finding a series of apartments, taking on sometimes-excessive hours of editing work) and on managing the anxiety that many of these challenges triggered, I decided I preferred not to make myself available for readings. I feel clearer and more centered now — as well as thankful that I don’t have any immediately pressing immigration-related needs to address — so my Etsy shop will be going back “on.”
On that note, getting settled here and grounding more fully in my inner peace are somewhat ongoing efforts, so you may see my Etsy shop going in and out of vacation mode at times. But I’ve been reading cards since I was 16 (That’s more than half my life now, wow!), and it’s something I truly love to do, so I anticipate I will just keep coming back to it. Given that I now live in Europe, on the Euro, I’ve changed my prices to Euro. However, being from the U.S.A., I’m sympathetic to the fact that the exchange rate is not always kind. I try not to make a habit of running a bargaining-based business model because I believe in charging a fair price from the get-go, but if the exchange rate is ever particularly harsh for you, feel free to ask me about minor adjustments; I’d be glad to try to find a way to work with your needs.
As for my writing, I’ve toyed with the idea of starting a new blog; I took the Tumblr glitching last year as a sign as well, perhaps, that it was time for me to seek a new platform. When I have the new blog figured out, I will gladly share it with you. It will probably have a somewhat different focus than this one took on over the years; I began this blog as an outlet for the simple fact that I love to reflect on life and write about it. I find it helpful to “practice” writing about daily life, as that keeps me evolving as a memoirist. Life is beautiful, life is magical, the adventure of being here is an incredible gift, and taking the time to reflect on what we’re living and to mine it for meaning makes our journeys all the richer and more fulfilling. For me, writing about daily life is, in itself, a spiritual practice. (Many artists would say the same about their own art, I’d wager.) It is also a huge part of the way that I “learn” — and have any “spiritual” insights to share — in the first place. So you will likely see more memoir-style stuff on there, once it’s up and running. I still want to include reflective philosophical pieces though, too, so it will be a mix. I’m not sure how much of a Q&A format the new blog will take (like this blog has had in the past); that will depend largely on how much I can feasibly convert blogging into work that can sustain me. However, I’m open-minded about how it will evolve. :) In the mean time, again, I am happy to offer personalized guidance for you in the form of tarot card readings.
And finally: a (hopefully uplifting) word about twin flames. You might have noticed that, even before i disappeared from Tumblr, I stopped writing much about twin flames. This is simply because I don’t feel I have much more to say about them than what I have already said. I might, of course, come across more inspiration in the future — in which case I will very excitedly write new posts! — but I have always believed that, regardless of the labels you do or don’t apply to a person, the same fundamental guidelines UNIVERSALLY apply: mutual respect (including mutual respect for boundaries); speaking your heart in a loving way; remembering that healthy, unconditional love is non-attached; reminding yourself that unconditional love has no price (including the fact that you will NEVER need to “earn” unconditional love through suffering); checklists aren’t definitive; labels are unnecessary; no program or to-do list is necessary for what’s meant to be; and no personal growth program, to-do list, or service that comes from an ethical mindset and is worth your while will promise you any given outcome or another regarding someone else’s free will. In other words, finding peace with a twin flame situation is not about labels, “payment” in any form, chasing, manipulations, etc. I suspect that just about anything I have ever had to say about “twin flames” or any other kind of relationship will reflect these core beliefs. Of course, my beliefs are just that: my beliefs. This doesn’t mean that they are THE beliefs, much less beliefs that anyone else must share. But to explain where I come from when I reflect on matters of love, I don’t see my beliefs on love as particularly New Age; they don’t involve a reliance on spiritual “hierarchies,” on channeled messages from love “authorities,” on schedules of “DNA upgrades” (or any other claims masquerading as science). That isn’t to say that I think less of anyone for following other paths or entertaining other lines of thought: just that, aside from messages about PURE LOVE — no bells, whistles, celestial/extraterrestrial third parties, or “upgrades” required — just love, which is awe-inspiring in itself . . . I don’t feel I have much else, on the phenomenon, to offer. ;) So I don’t see myself writing much “new” content on twin flames in the coming months, though that isn’t to say I won’t return to or refine an idea I expressed previously. I truly hope you can continue to find comfort and guidance in what I’ve already written here on the subject over the years. And even more importantly, I hope that you can connect with the comfort and guidance your own beautiful heart has been waiting to share with you. ♡
If you’ve read this far, thank you very much! My “return” to Tumblr is going to be very sporadic for the time being, because I need to keep focusing the majority of my time and energy on holdin’ it down, payin’ the bills, settlin’ in (including learning Deutsch!), and all that jazz. In a dream world, I can eventually build up enough of an income through writing and guidance services that I can put the editing aside and devote more time to my online presence, interacting with readers. I’m not there juuuust yet, but I’m excited for the journey, and I am very appreciative for your interest in my writing along the way. Knowing that people look forward to and find something valuable in my words means a great deal to me and is an important part of what keeps me coming back to, and trying to find a way to live from, my passions. My hope for you is that you, too, can connect with and build a life around yours.
Wishing you all SO much peace and love! Blessings, Laura

Gnome Stew Notables – Caitlynn Belle
Welcome to the next installment of our Gnome Spotlight: Notables series. The notables series is a look at game developers in the gaming industry doing good work. The series will focus on game creators from underrepresented populations primarily, and each entry will be a short bio and interview. We’ve currently got a group of authors and guest authors interviewing game creators and hope to bring you many more entries in the series as it continues on. If you’ve got a suggestion for someone we should be doing a notables article on, send us a note at [email protected]. – Head Gnome John
Meet Caitlynn
Caitlynn Belle is a queer game designer and writer from Savannah, Georgia. You can find her Patreon at where she makes so many weird games about sex and feelings.
@auracait on twitter

Talking With Caitlynn
1) Tell us a little bit about yourself and your work.
My name’s Caitlynn Belle, I’m a queer games girl from Savannah, Georgia, and I mostly release small, experimental games through my Patreon (caitlynnbelle.com and at
kirigami
3) What themes do you like to emphasize in your game work?
Sexuality and identity, I think, are the big ones. I want games that represent me and I want to do my best to put games out that represent others. I want spaces to talk about sex in a safe and healthy way and I want to explore identity and self-expression and what it means to really dig into yourself and figure out who you are, year after year.
4) What mechanics do you like best in games?
I appreciate finding interesting ways to divine outcomes other than dice or cards, anything quirky that ties back into the theme of the game somehow (Jenga towers for tension / fear, for example), and to be honest, I really like just pure narrative storytelling. Games like Fiasco where the structure of the game enables you to just wheel out and say whatever. I don’t like randomizers much in the games I play – my friends and I are used to creating characters and arcs and just driving towards their conclusions with as few speed bumps as possible.
5) How would you describe your game design style?
Sexy and weird. Just like me. But for real, all I’m trying to do is give you interesting things to say and interesting ways to say it. I think if you have that as your foundation, your game stands a much better chance of being awesome. I try to be authentic in voice, so it sounds like me and the image of the game I have in my head is the same image you get in yours, and I try to let my excitement for whatever it is I’m giving you shine through.
6) How does gender/queerness fit into your games?
They’re all tools to tell stories about queer identity. There’s things you feel weird or like an outcast over that you shouldn’t, but there’s no media for you, nowhere to explore people like you, and I want to start normalizing the idea of having cool gay characters do cool gay things. All of these games are coming from a girl who’s still on her own adventures, figuring out gender and love and who she is, and I think those themes are apparent in the text. I know very, very few people who aren’t exploring feelings about themselves in at least some tiny capacity, who they are and how they’ll express themselves, and that’s a real, honest, vulnerable thing, and I really want to see those kinds of characters out there as well.
7) How does the process of making small games influence your design?
It lets me latch on to any tiny idea I get and give it a proper home and just enough space to breathe and be a thing. You get small ideas sometimes and they can’t fill a larger game – just these little inklings of plots or rules – but they fit wonderfully on a three-page game that focuses in on a single experience.

There’s a lot of things that I couldn’t make into a larger product but I don’t think that makes them less valid. Like, I legitimately feel the 200 word RPG challenge that David Schirduan puts out each year has made some of the best games in our community, and I mean that sincerely. They’re beautiful, wonderful games, powerful and captivating, better than most anything in our collections or up on Kickstarter. But, making smaller projects lets you really focus in on what an idea needs and how you edit, and what you should be editing, and it helps strengthen your writing overall. I try to follow these small ideas to completion each month or every other month and it lets me play around with a lot of strangeness that would otherwise drown in deeper pools.
8) How did you get into games? Who did you try to emulate in your design?
I’ve been roleplaying and playing board games forever, so eventually I took the next logical step and tried to make a game I wanted to play that I hadn’t seen yet. My brother played D&D, and when I was little, I didn’t understand how they were playing a game with no board and why they were talking so much and all the funny dice, so even back then I was trying to pick apart social interactions to form it into a cohesive whole? Which I think sounds a little heavy for a little girl to be doing? But like, I just love taking things apart and seeing why they’re working the way they are, and why people make the choices they do. Once I got an idea of what roleplaying was I just kept doing it forever and ever! As far as who I try to emulate, my secret goal is to make a game that Jason Morningstar really loves. I really like Jason’s work, it’s well-written, thoughtful, and fun. I feel like he’s got a really good handle on how to present a product and how to structure play towards a type of story, and how to do that with as few tools as possible, and that’s something I really admire. I like to picture him as some kind of lich, and only by stealing his phylactery and drinking in his soul will I understand his methods.
9) What one thing would you change in gaming?
How games look. We’ve got this vision of a roleplaying game as a thing with character sheets and dice and rules for doing skills and progression towards conflict and violence. There’s very little space for games that don’t want that – games that have weird formats or physical requirements, or that don’t want to tell stories about conflict and fighting, or games that don’t want to engage in long-form campaign play. They don’t get the same kind of attention and it makes for a drab, textureless playing field. I would really like to see games that just throw everything out the window and tell more personal stories, or find other ways to engage in narrative besides the same tools we’ve been using for decades.
so many games!
10) What are you working on now?
A million billion things – I’ve got a collection of tiny games about goblins, and they’re all dealing with things like intimacy between friends, processing death, body image and self-esteem, consent and boundary issues, etc. I wanted to take a traditional mindless monster and show them in vulnerable moments. My bigger project though is a game about telling the story of a world left to grow outside of its bounds after society left it: you play as the landscapes and memories instead of people (as it’s an overgrown apocalyptic jungle at this point) and build a narrative about what life used to be. It’s proving really challenging, because I have to consider how one might portray blades of grass or forgotten songs, and what that looks like in play! But I think it’s a sweet game and I hope people will like it!
11) Who/what games are some of your influences?
Jason Morningstar’s stuff for telling stable, structured, fascinating stories out of sparse, thoughtful tools – his larp Juggernaut is absolutely excellent and is easily one of the top ten storytelling games of all time. Ross Cowman, especially Fall of Magic, because Ross’ games capture a sense of wonder and heartbreak that just destroys you. We play Fall of Magic once a year and every time it’s just this fucking experience, this thing that sends chills down your back and keeps you up at night. It’s so good. Everything Ross touches is gold. Meguey Baker’s wonderful seasonal games are just magic, too, just dripping with mischief and wonder and crystalline imagery. Emily Care Boss’ romance trilogy, for taking romance seriously and giving you just really fucking great games to explore them with, Epidiah Ravachol’s Vast & Starlit for just being the most concentrated genius you can fit on a business card, I could write entire essays about that game. Ben Lehman, though I don’t get to play his games as often as I like, he always writes things that make me stop and reconsider what I’m doing and how it could be better, just these great little bits that form a much greater whole. I could really go on and on naming all these people I love. Everyone makes great games. Play every game.
Thanks for joining us for this entry in the notables series. You can find more in the series here: and please feel free to drop us any suggestions for people we should interview at [email protected].

Advanced Hack: How to Improve Your SEO in Less Than 30 Minutes
email marketing for bloggers
For example, if you search “2+2” Google will show you the answer of “4” so you don’t have to click through and head over to a webpage.
Make sure each Question includes the entire text of the question and make sure each answer includes the entire text of the answer.

If you’ve got a suggestion for someone we should be doing a notables article on, send us a note at [email protected]. – Head Gnome John
Meet Caitlynn
Caitlynn Belle is a queer game designer and writer from Savannah, Georgia. You can find her Patreon at where she makes so many weird games about sex and feelings.

For example, if you search “2+2” Google will show you the answer of “4” so you don’t have to click through and head over to a webpage.

Michael Seibel, president of the Y Combinator (YC), recently published an essay on the type of person startups make sense for. The original article is here: https://blog.ycombinator.com/why-should-i-start-a-startup/For context: YC is a prolific investment firm for very young startups. Reddit was accepted into the first batch of YC companies. Seibel is a successful entrepreneur now turned investor. From his experience and job role, he has many data points on aspirational entrepreneurs who make it, those who don’t, and most importantly, who those people were before we knew how they’d turn out.Language and ideas were the original “scaling platform”/software/meme, so it makes sense that YC would be interested in facilitating these platforms. Consequently, they also run a popular discussion forum (“Hacker News”) for people interested in startups and technology, colloquially referred to as “hackers”. Seibel’s essay was submitted to the forum for discussion and discussed heavily here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14806393. With ~280 comments and 500 upvotes in two days, it’s reasonable to say the post has struck a nerve.I’ll save you the effort of trawling through the comments (that’s my job), but the most frequent reactions fall along these lines:Loved it: Super motivating, I relate, let’s talk shop, tactics, mentors, tools, etc.Hated it: This article encourages hubris about one’s ability, most startups fail and need luck. Also, privilege, lots of money, lack of wife, kids, family, mortgage, yada yada. The ontologists: people who concerned with being. This is where the gold is.To clarify, most people genuinely shouldn’t try to start a startup. Preaching that kind of tactic based panacea is just as helpful as telling everyone to be “happy”.What’s useful about startups, however, is that they’re rigorously executed petri dishes of life experiments. Startups are defined by growth, whether its users, time spent on the platform, revenue, profit, etc. For our personal case study, if we substitute growth for the more neutral term “change”, startups become fantastic case studies to a certain type of existence, specifically, a dynamic one.Back to ontology. There is a key moment that got pushed to the bottom where Michael tries to respond to Q&A’s, and he has this insightful interaction:A: What's the origin of your desire to be better than all of your peers?MW: Because I realized that I could be betterB: In what ways? Sorry Michael, but I reject the idea that you can be 'better' than another person.MW: I should have said I realized I could be better at the game of high school student looking to get into a good college.Commenter B was looking for evidence that people in startups think they’re better than us plebeians. But give yourself a gut check of Seibel’s life and you can probably conclude this is unlikely. How’s that joke go again? Oh right.“Would you rather be a white woman or black male?”Though tech has gotten better and will continue to do so (proof: https://techcrunch.com/2017/04/16/stop-blaming-the-tech-industry-for-the-worlds-problems/), the reality is positions of power for men of color remain statistically abnormalities. On a good day, Seibel may have looked at his life and job and felt like the Obama of Silicon Valley. And for all the others, Chris Washington. Heck, that scene from Get Out might have been inspired by a hypothetical party I just made up where Billy Dee Williams/Lando Calrissian and Seibel bump into each other, and the two men give each other a wink and nod of camaraderie. “I see you brother, keep making cash.”Which is to say, it is unlikely for Seibel to have grown up internalizing that he was better than others. Read his original piece and this alternate hypothesis checks out. Now that we’ve set aside that interpretation, it begs the question: what did he mean to really mean?“I realized I could be better” reads very different if we read it as “I realized I could become Better.”Later on, when another commenter asks why the 3 constraints (1. underdog preference, 2. loves the thrill of poor odds, 3. Amor fati) that Seibel said were the preferred constraints of startup founders, he claimed no answer. After all, even Seibel won’t purport to have God-given Moses style tablets on the commandments of constraints that founders must have. With help from Nicholas Nassim Taleb’s “Antifragile”, we can conclude that all three constraints are great heuristics of the type of shock that biological systems benefit from. Cue the tape:“The bold conjecture made here is that everything that has life in it is to some extent antifragile (but not the reverse). It looks like the secret of life is antifragility. Typically, the natural—the biological—is both antifragile and fragile, depending on the source (and the range) of variation. A human body can benefit from the name Wolff’s Law after an 1892 article by a German surgeon. But a dish, a car, an inanimate object will not—these may be robust but cannot be intrinsically antifragile. Inanimate—that is, nonliving—material, typically, when subjected to stress, either undergoes material fatigue or breaks. We can use the distinction as a marker between living and nonliving. The fact that the artificial needs to be antifragile for us to be able to use it as tissue is quite a telling difference between the biological and the synthetic. Your house, your food processor, and your computer desk eventually wear down and don’t self-repair. They may look better with age (when artisanal), just as your jeans will look more fashionable with use, but eventually time will catch up with them and the hardest material will end up looking like Roman ruins. Your jeans may look improved and more fashionable when worn out, but their material did not get stronger, nor do they self-repair.”Seibel can’t write too philosophically, or he comes off as a mystical Internet cult writer. Once again, that’s my job. So let’s put it together. There is good evidence (Seibel’s data points as President of YC) to believe that, for a certain group of people, subjecting themselves to stress (in the form of unfavorable odds) is a desirable end goal. Further, we know that the indicator of living, organic systems is their system’s ability to grow from the right type of stressors: sprints in working out, not marathons; keeping a low personal cost of living so you can risk taking an unpaid internship at your dream company; etc. So what do this all mean? For people who are more Life than Death, starting a startup is a fantastic way of becoming who you deeply want to be. Be it warrior, saint or thinker, many of the commenters never realized that Seibel was writing an article about character formation. In fact, he explicitly refutes financial success as the basis of why he recommends starting a startup. But because of his need for propriety due to his status, he can’t outright and say “adversity will give you the opportunity become exactly the type of person you respect, leading you to respect yourself more and be more satisfied. This is guaranteed regardless of the financial outcome.”Why can’t he say this? Because there’s a non-trivial percentage of the population that is OK with “death”, living instead of Life. Fear sells much better than hope. And in their defense, even Taleb writes about this. Remember, most startup founders will financially fail, but the backroom secret is that most news fail to report the astonishingly high satisfaction rate (https://unsupervisedmethods.com/the-startup-failure-myth-b80fc4b6af45), even among “failed” entreprneurs, as opposed to the normal population’s job satisfaction (http://www.gallup.com/poll/188144/employee-engagement-stagnant-2015.aspx) The antifragility of the system requires individuals to be fragile. Barbells leverage means you need to have people manning libraries, fire stations and police departments vs. jetting off to Hawaii and crowdfunding video game playthroughs. If you’re willing to live like a pauper to do what you love, your self-satisfaction will be its own reward. The key is to choose with eyes wide open. Well, maybe a wink is fine ;)

FINAL MAPS: THEORY OF WRITING DRAFT THREE
Throughout the rest of my academic career I hope to develop my writing to the point that it can also be persuasive and meaningful to a variety of different people. Some terms I think are important to include in my writing specifically, would be the rhetorical situation, specifically the audience, as well as the purpose. For my writing, I believe that these are two of the most important terms. These terms help me to expand my writing as well as specify it because both are so important in the formation of the writing. But overall, I believe it is important to diversify one’s forms of writing. For example, for most of my academic career I have been writing in the form of short response or longer essays, but now in my current writing class our teacher is having us utilize different platforms like Tumblr and Twitter. I think this is a great idea and important because many students believe that they are writing for the teacher and only the teacher, but by opening up the audience it really allows the writer to develop new skills as well as their own writing.
As a writer, I think I can be witty at times, depending on the rhetorical situation. On the other hand, as a researcher I am quite more academic in my tone and topic, usually because my research is required for my college courses. Considering the key terms I mentioned above, my identity of a writer is more geared toward an academic tone rather than the new side of my identity that I am developing through my class that has us use social media to develop our writing. Through the research project in this class, since I am allowed to choose something that I am truly passionate about as well as choose my audience, I find my writing developing into a more interesting and involved tone than my previous academic-based writing.
I think a lot of one’s writing style branches of of their prior knowledge and experiences, I know mine do. Throughout my academic career, I can see my writing changing and developing me into the writer that I am today. Specifically, this writing course this quarter at college is quite different from any other writing class I have taken in the past, as previously mentioned, as it is having us conduct our writing on social media. This class is really helping me diversify my tone in my writing, which I hope to carry on in future assignments and in future classes.
From my understanding of writing, some of the most important elements of writing are practice and reflection. Practice is incredibly important because “practice can refine technique …. with practice, we can create what seems otherwise out of reach or totally foreign, can compose a text - of words or of words and other elements - shaped by and in response to context” (Yancey 64). Another element that is very important but not necessarily included in my map above is the element of failure (specifically it is the large black curly q). Failure is something to reflect on and it is also extremely important to remember that “failure is an opportunity for growth” (Carr 63). This is the third time we are doing a visual representation of writing and learning, and I really enjoyed this exercise because it allowed me to really open up my mind and explore new thoughts in a more hands on and creative way.
This visual representation of my theory of writing represents the influencers on my writing process. The large black is curly q is the necessary presence of failures that must be recognized in order to make process in my writing and research. The red heart made out of plato represents the purpose of my writing that guides and influences my process. The blue G represents my voice that is always present in my writing, but is constantly developing as I develop as a writer. The fruit stickers represent the audience that influences my writing. The little plush balls and small objects in my bag represent my previous experiences and knowledge that influence my writing. The oddly shaped pipe tubes in my bag represent the need for practice in order to develop my writing and research process. The green and yellow sticks represent the fact that no matter what happens, I need to hold strong and continue to repeat and refine these processes to develop my writing.Through my theory of writing I hope to be able to create fluid and meaningful pieces of writing.
