Getting a suit is actually so humiliating if you're built like me. I have a thick neck and button up shirts either don't fit me or choke me, after that's done I need to get everything 2-4 sizes over tailor everything down because anything big enough for my arms and shoulders is too big everywhere else. Pants that fit my waist constrain my legs and also need to be bought oversized and tailored down.
I hate this stupid suit. I hate the weird passive agressive langauge store employees use when they're like "are you wearing *those* shoes with that?". I'm only buying it because my sister wants me to wear a suit to her wedding but if I had my way I'd never possess this diabolical symbol of sin and opulence.

4 Valuable Personal Finance Lessons I Wish I'd Learned in College
In hindsight, I can't help but think that a few key financial insights would have made my college years far less stressful. During those days, I embraced a frugal lifestyle, commuting from home and occasionally splurging on outings with friends. With my work-study job and internships, supplemented by my parents' support, I managed my primary expenses: transportation and food. While this approach did save me money, I now see that a few financially savvy moves could have yielded the same results without as much sacrifice. Here are the four personal finance lessons I wish I'd learned in college:

1- Opening a High-Yield Savings Account Earlier:
Living at home allowed me to save money I might have otherwise spent on student housing and meals. My parents also ensured I had some money in my checking account for emergencies. However, for three years, I let my extra cash sit in my checking account, earning no interest. It wasn't until my senior year that I opened a savings account, but it only offered a meager 0.01% interest rate. In hindsight, I should have opted for a high-yield savings account like the Marcus by Goldman Sachs High-Yield Savings Account or the Synchrony Bank High Yield Savings Account, both offering competitive APYs.
2- Learning How to Use a Credit Card Wisely:
My fear of credit card debt kept me from using my credit card extensively. While this prevented debt, it also cost me valuable rewards and benefits. For instance, I missed out on the opportunity to earn 3X membership rewards per dollar on flights through the American Express Travel portal. Even after graduating and getting my own credit card, I failed to maximize cash-back rewards by redeeming points for travel-related expenses, where they were worth 1.5 cents each, instead of using them for new purchases with Amazon at a value of only 1 cent per point.
3- Starting to Pay Off Student Loans in College:
Despite earning grants, scholarships, and work-study funds, I had to take out student loans to cover the remaining tuition. My initial plan was to wait until after graduation to start repaying these loans, following the six-month grace period. However, I later realized that my unsubsidized loans were accruing interest from the moment they were disbursed, even while I was in school. This meant I had to pay around $400 in interest, something I would have preferred to avoid had I known better.
4- Learning More About Real-World Finances:
My constant worry about money in college was rooted in my limited knowledge of financial management. The world of personal finance is complex, filled with jargon and acronyms that can be daunting. Looking back, I wish I had made a greater effort to learn the basics during college. This would have empowered me to develop better habits like budgeting and saving and spared me many sleepless nights.
These four personal finance lessons, if learned earlier, could have significantly eased the financial stress I experienced during my college years. They serve as valuable reminders to anyone embarking on their own personal finance journey, helping them make informed decisions and avoid common financial pitfalls.

There's a sense of freedom that comes with anonymity of online interactions. This sense of freedom only exists because of the fact it's difficult for the real world to catch up with you in your real life. Unless of course, you go after the wrong one.
When a person goes after someone else solely because they think differently or have a strong opposing opinion, they often do so with a false gusto and bravery that only exists in the virtual realm. Like many say online, "You'd never say that to my face." And that's true for most people... but not all people.
And because of this anonymity, that affords all internet users the freedom to say whatever, a real life concern spawns from a virtual world. This real life concern is often referred to as "doxxing" where one internet user uses what clues and resources they have available to "expose" another internet user's real life. This has happened to many people I watch on YouTube. Some have even had to involve the real life police, as well as uproot their entire lives and move because of doxxing.
For example, Murky Meg has been doxxed a couple times now. She's had her real life threatened by doxxing. Terrifyingly, she wasn't the only target threatened because the douche flutes also brought her children into it. Yes, the same people who worship the Montecito Madam and preach the mantras of "compassion and kindness" and "leave children out of this" have gone so far as to go after Murky Meg's real life and real life children. And sadly, the threats and attacks never really stop. Especially when articles like the one I wrote about make the rounds. But Murky Meg doesn't allow this all to silence her; she keeps calm and carries on regardless.
Another example involves Yankee Wally. She was targeted repeatedly over copyright infringement on her YouTube channel, as well as having her social media accounts suspended repeatedly over the last few years. And even though Yankee Wally has never pretended to be anything or anyone else than who she is in real life, people have attempted to use her past as a weapon to discredit her. Those attempts are futile, though, because Yankee Wally has always been open and honest about her life. She's also been very clear to the people watching her that she will fight back if need be.
Then there's According2Taz. While Taz has gone through the same ringer that so many others have gone through (from doxxing to threats, harassment, and verbal abuse), she has also been attacked financially. Especially when it comes to her supporting good causes. Some twat waffles have sent her £0.01 via PayPal with notes attached. Notes that are grossly abusive, calling her fat and ugly, and saying her husband is cheating on her. Others have sent requests asking her to pay them £100 with notes attacking HRH Catherine the Duchess of Cambridge and her book. Murky Meg got a similar request, as well. But the most heinous impediment coming from the Montecito Madam's extremists, involved charity. Once, when Taz was raising money for Australian wildlife affected by the wildfires; someone reported her PayPal account and those funds were held up for some time before getting released for the cause. Then, again, Taz was targeted when she was raising funds to help an elderly woman who got robbed. Yes, the very same people, who stand on custom-made soap boxes emblazoned with the Sussex monogram, did everything they possibly could to marginally disrupt charity. Yet Taz does not waiver; she keeps going.
As bad as Murky Meg, Yankee Wally, and Taz have had it, they're sadly not alone. No, they are only three examples from a plethora of examples. Of that plethora, one more example comes to mind. That example involves DanjaZone (Ashli).
Ashli, who started her YouTube channel before the whole Megxit ordeal as a way to keep in touch with family, was even the subject of a blind item from CDAN (crazy days and nights). You see, Ashli and her family lost everything they had in a horrible house fire. Rumors swirled around the fire, but the most heinous comments came from the Sussex Squad's more prominent loudmouths. Some accused Ashli of lying about the fire in an attempt to scam people for money. Others called her white trash and trailer trash. So while Ashli was going through the loss of her home and everything she owned... while she was grieving the loss of family pets and irreplaceable family mementos... while she was down and out on her luck and trying to cope with all the pain and loss... while she was going through all of the attacks from doubters saying she faked the fire or was lying, that she was trailer trash... the disciples of the Duchess were laughing and celebrating her pain as a win. Never once considering the fact that Ashli has been in recovery for years now, and the stress from the fire coupled with the heartless, feckless attacks, could in fact push her over the edge.
No, the very same people, who scream via CAPS lock on social media that critics of Meghan should "leave her alone", that her critics drove the Montecito Madam to "suicidal ideation while pregnant" could care less about Ashli's mental health. Yes, the very same people, who lodged over 50,000 OFCOM complaints against Piers Morgan because he questioned their beloved's outlandish attacks during the Oprah interview, previously found no issues with attacking Ashli during one of the hardest times in her life. Yet, Ashli picked up the pieces and never gave up or gave into their attacks.
Again, these four examples are just the tip of the hypocritical iceberg. There are countless more examples out there. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people who criticize Meghan's and Harry's behaviors can all relate. Nobody is safe or off limits from this iceberg; from Royal Rota reporters, celebrities, and politicians to regular people who aren't rich, famous, or in possession of a global platform.
Yet nobody, and I mean absolutely nobody, in the media or in journalism ever cover any of this. You can find articles galore written with the intentions of exposing "Meghan Markle Haters". Articles like the one I wrote about attacking critics and reducing us all to the stereotypes of racist, misogynist, bigot, envious, etc.
What that does is send a clear, prominent message to the people who cling to every word of the Montecito Madam. The people who cling to the wind coming from her mouth, her "close friends" or fake "palace insiders" hear those dog whistles loud and clear. The dog whistles that say "It's okay, keep attacking and hurting people. They're evil, hateful racists. They deserve the abuse. You're on the side of good. Go harder!"
When in truth, the wind they cling to coming from their beloved's mouth or mouthpieces is actually falsehoods, lies, and manifestations of grandeur that is no more real than Netflix's The Crown. No, the wind they cling to really comes from the south mouth of their beloved. But God forbid anyone hold their little cult accountable.
We cannot have a society where sensationalism trumps truth. We cannot weaponize the press and use it against people simply because they criticize the Meghan Markles of the world. It is unacceptable for the press, media platforms, or anyone with a prominent influence on society, to celebrate defenders of the Meghan Markle faith without first acknowledging the truth.
The truth, which is often dream dashing and harsh, is that "Meghan Markle Lovers" could care less about compassion, kindness, charity, children, or community. The truth is, they could care less about forgiveness or loving thy neighbors. We don't have to look to their savior figurehead to prove this to be true. We only have to look at the comments section or Twitter.
Those of us who criticize or dislike Meghan and Harry because of their behavior know all too well the truth will never be written up on the front page of the Sun, the Daily Mail, or People Magazine. The mirage of us being the racists, misogynists, or detesting haters sells papers. And the papers don't want to be in that same category.
Maybe one day the press will tell the stories of people like Murky Meg, Yankee Wally, Taz, Ashli, and countless others in an effective way that exposes the real haters in the relationship. Maybe one day, the victims of the Montecito Madam's cult following will be doxxed, exposed, and sent a new message. A message that says, "We see you for the hypocrites you are. You may repeat the preachings of your Madam like it's the new woke gospel, but you don't practice it. You're a big reason why people loathe your beloved. You make her look worse. You aren't defending her, you are condemning her. Keep it up, because we see you and we will expose you!"

My thoughts and all the things I love about Lovely Us (2020)

This drama really surprised me with how good it was written and made despite already knowing that this is highly rated by my cdrama mutuals. First ep right off the bat made me laugh and cry. The following eps kept the flow really well and established the characters and their relations. Before I know it, I'm already in love and attached to the characters and everything about this drama. It's very charming, calming and heartwarming to watch. The acting, writing, execution, ost, and production are well-done.
Set in 2007, this is another drama with nostalgic vibe that will remind you of your childhood and probably teenage years as well of your old neighborhood and the people you used to hang out with when you're younger. Even though I'm kinda fed up with childhood friends to lovers trope by now, this one did it the right way. Romance is slowburn but the buildup isn't slow at all. The main cp are so cute despite the daily bickerings that you just can't help but root for them to be together. It also have unrequited love trope where you'll see the character continuously root for that person and not expecting anything in return. There's no antagonist/evil characters in this story, just your feel-good slice-of-life drama with a touch of teenage romance in it.
Another strong point this drama have is the friendship and family dynamics. The five main leads have such amazing and solid friendship and their chemistry with each other is very natural to watch you'll wish you have the kind of friendship they have. It's endearing how their respective families are friends with one another and the parents have absolute trust with their children even allowing them to stay in closed room, have overnight at their house without adult supervision and even go to outdoor camping sharing one tent. It's refreshing to see how they showcased different parenting styles in each household and the parents aren't portrayed as someone controlling, instead they understand and communicate with their children. There's even one case wherein a parent realized he's doing it wrong so he asked for advice and help from his son's friend in order to get closer with his son.
Unlike other dramas, this one never drags out misunderstandings and touches the issue in the most heartwarming way that it never felt annoying or frustrating to watch, instead I became emotional at those moments that I can't help but shed a tear or ugly cry.
The characters are funny, full of mischief but sweet and thoughtful on the inside. It's a delight to watch them get together and have their little meetings, bicker and help each other out.
The ost will surely stay on repeat in my playlist for the next few days or weeks even. The song choices fit the mood so well and I find myself heavily lss-ed with the opening song. The song "Can I See You Tomorrow?" gives off the ultimate nostalgic vibe and reminds me of one ISWAK ost.
What really stood out to me the most are the moments in each ep wherein a certain character will narrate his/her thoughts about love, life, and family. They're beautifully and oftentimes poetically written matching with flashback scenes that made the dialogue even more heartfelt.
Here are some of the lines that are deeply engraved in my heart because they are beautifully written and will really go well as book passages:
"Once people become parents, their memory begins to become biased. They always remember they are their children's most reliable parents, but often forget that they are also children loved by their own parents. When they are waiting for their children to come back home, they forget that their own parents are also waiting for their return in a similar mood."
"The audio frequency of the sound when a snowflake falls on the water surface is over 50,000 Hz. Because it falls beyond human being's hearing range, this snowy day is still so quiet that it seems I can only hear my own heartbeat and that it seems there is only me and the person in front of me on this planet with a population of 6.6 Billion. I hope this world can be noiser so that I can pretend that I've never discovered this secret."
"They think that the probability is just 0.01, so they put on the emperor's new clothes, trying to hide their affections with magic. But affections are not that easy to hide. Even if the probability is pretty low, it will be revealed at a certain moment. So on that rainy night, while looking at her back, he found that the most obvious evidence of falling in love with her was the feeling of easement in his heart and the smile on his face when he looked at her."

J: Because, technically, Bee and I are related.
B: Six hundred-year-old cousins. The average DNA we share is less than 0.01%
J: You’ve looked into it, clearly. Wanting to see how icky things could be if we ever decided to be more than friends?
B: I’m sorry, I’m not the one who has incest running in their family. Your great-however-many grandfather did sleep with his sister and produce three children. And, Goldenhand and the Mad Queen were themselves products of incest, as their parents were first cousins.
J: It’s funny how he becomes my great-however-many grandfather when it comes to the bad stuff.
B: Yes, because you share his family name and I share hers. Literally.
J: Anyway, incest was more commonplace back then.
B: So were a lot of things, it doesn’t make it right! (pause) Getting back to your question, pedants-united, yes, Goldenhand the Just and Ser Blue were involved in a romantic relationship. There are many different accounts of their time together, both before and after the Long Night, but we know they were married in the sept at Evenfall Hall, and we know they had three children: Catelyn, Brynden, and Joanna.
J: From the records at Casterly Rock, we know that Catelyn married Damon Marbrand. That was the start of my family tree.
B: And we know that Brynden married Alys Payne, and begun mine.
J: As for their parents, Goldenhand the Just and Ser Blue, there are only some historical accounts to back up the creativity taken in these novels.
B: I would argue it’s unlikely that Goldenhand the Just was pegged in Dorne.
(Jay laughs)

Hello, greetings, and salutations to those I’ve met before and those I haven’t! Chances are that if you’re reading this, then you have a few questions on your mind. Is there a story that you want to read but you can’t find no matter how hard you search? Is there an idea you want to see come to life, but you don’t have the time or energy to set aside to do so yourself? Is the tag for your favorite trope or pairing looking a little bare? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, then look no further!
I am now opening Writing Commissions and am open to countless forms of writing that range from one-shots and drabbles to long-term multi-chapter stories; for both original work and fanfiction! I’m an author who’s been writing professionally for over half a decade and I’m currently studying for a degree in Creative Writing with experience in multiple writing classes and workshops. I have experience in multiple genres and fandoms as well as different writing styles. The default for my writing is 3rd Person Limited and focused on a specific character when it comes to Point of View, but I can cover many other types depending on what works best for the story or what you might like most. I’m also happy to write for a fandom I have no knowledge of as long as background research to write the story does not take more than a few days. Further discussion can be had depending on the story or fandom.
Whether it be fanfiction or original fiction, I will write OC’s as described by you as long as I am given a complete or semi-complete character profile to work with.

All correspondence can be had through the email [email protected]. When emailing me, please specify that you are seeking a Writing Commission piece and share with me the projected word count you wish for, the maximum you are able to pay, and a basic plot, prompt, or summary of the story you wish to see written. Upon acceptance of your request, I will email you and further discussion can happen about the piece.
Replies can typically be expected 1-3 days after the initial email is sent. The story will then be completed within 2-4 days once the details are worked out over correspondence and payment is sent. Please keep in mind that the longer the piece, the more time it will take.
If you need the completed piece done by a certain time, such as needing the story to gift to a friend for a birthday or other occasion, please tell me so and I will do my best to get it completed by the date you need it by.

Prices and Payment Information
All stories, regardless of genre or length, are priced at one American penny per word up to the first 1,000 words with 10% off per extra 1,000 words up to a max of 40% and everything rounded to the highest dollar bill. Some examples of word count versus price would be:
*500-599 words = $5 *1,000-1,999 = $10 *2,000-2,999 = $18 (2,000 words x 0.01 (1 penny) – 10% off) *3,000-3,999 = $24 (20% off) *4,000-4,999 = $28 (30% off) *5,000-5,999 = $30 (40% off) *6,000,6,999 = $36 (40% off) *7,000-7,999 = $42 (40% off) and so on
Taking into account the time it takes to plot, write, and proof a story, these prices cover what would be minimum wage for my living area. All payment is done with PayPal invoices which means payment is received BEFORE the story is written and sent to you in a PDF format. With invoice you are able to pay in a variety of ways depending on what works best for you. Please keep in mind that while I do not expect payment in the plotting stages over email, I do expect payment before work on the story itself begins.
Full refunds are allowed and will be given if work on the story is minimal or has not yet begun, but once the story is underway, there will be NO REFUNDS.

Information Needed for Story
While you may approach me with a basic idea or prompt and a projected word count, upon acceptance I will email you a basic form that will ask what characters you wish to be in the story, a more detailed request to explain your prompt, any relationships you might want, what Point of View preference you have (if any), what fandom you want written for (if any), and any Original Characters you wish to be included in the story (if any).

Content Guidelines
There are a few things that I will not write which are as follows:
*Excessively Detailed and Gruesome Torture: While I’ll write general torture scenes, I won’t go into excessive depth over the actual act of the torture, especially if it’s gruesome or full of gore.
*Music or Poetry: While I can write a short poem within a piece that a character might have written for another character, I have limited experience in Poetry and no experience in Music or writing music.
*Pedophilia: I will not write anything involving romantic pairings with an adult or a child. If you think the ages might be questionable, please talk to me and I will work with you as best I can.
*Incest: There will be possible exceptions when it comes to characters who are not blood related or who did not grow up together such as in the case of adoption. Again, talk to me if you think the content might be questionable, and I will see what can be done.
*Sexual Content: While I WILL write sexual content, there are certain kinks or fetishes that I will not write either due to being uncomfortable with them or not having any knowledge in them. Please contact me with questions if your prompt includes something like this.
*Out of Character (OOC): I will not write characters who would act wildly outside of how they are portrayed in the source material. While changes to them might be made depending on the story or AU, I will do my best to keep to how they come across in the source material (unless fanon is better).
*Overpowered Original Characters: I will not write Original Characters that have skills outside of what they could conceivably have, meaning I won’t write for a character that is gifted at everything, utterly perfect, and is attractive to everyone around them. (I will, however, be happy to write for a character who thinks they’re gifted, perfect, and a gift from god before finding out the horrible truth.)

Judging by the early moves in key markets, Mortgage rates could go down today. But, as always, events in the hours to come could undermine that prediction.

Last week has been a relatively good week for mortgage rates. And today the downward trend is likely to continue. So you might want to keep sharing your course today.
However, the risks of doing this over a long period of time remain relatively high. Most experts expect mortgage rates to rise soon. So my personal rate lock recommendations must remain:

LOCK when close in 30th Days
LOCK when close in 45 Days
LOCK when close in 60 Days
However, I do not claim to have perfect foresight. And your personal analysis could be as good as mine – or better. So let your instincts and your personal risk tolerance guide you.

Important information about current mortgage rates
Here are some things you need to know:
Usually mortgage rates go up when the economy is doing well and go down when the economy is in trouble. But there are exceptions. Read ‘How Mortgage Rates Are Determined and Why You Should Care About It
Only “top notch” borrowers (with great credit scores, high down payments, and very healthy finances) will get the extremely low mortgage rates you see advertised
Lenders vary. Yours may or may not follow the crowd when it comes to daily price action – though they usually all follow the broader trend over time
When the daily price changes are small, some lenders adjust closing costs and leave their price lists unchanged
The refinancing rates are usually close to those for purchases. However, some types of refinancing are higher after a regulatory change
So there is a lot going on here. And no one can claim to know for sure what will happen to mortgage rates in the coming hours, days, weeks, or months.
Are mortgage and refinancing rates rising or falling?

Over the past few months, I may have created the impression that I think higher mortgage rates are inevitable. But of course they are not. Yes, they are still very likely. But nothing is certain.
And today we saw evidence from Europe that the global recovery may be less certain than many believe. That doesn’t necessarily mean the US recovery will stall. But our economy is closely related to the foreign one. And we could struggle to meet our high forecast growth numbers if others cannot buy our goods and services.
German editions
The Federal Statistical Office of the Federal Government published its latest figures on incoming orders in the manufacturing sector this morning. And they were down 3.7% in May. Most economists had forecast an increase of 1% or more.
What caused this disappointing number? Well, there are likely several factors including falling heavy machinery demand and lower overseas orders. And even well-known German car manufacturers have problems with their supply chains.
UK embraces coronavirus
Meanwhile, the UK Government’s Health Secretary also agreed this morning that it would be “breaking new ground” if it carried out plans to fully (well, almost) normalize life from July 19th, due to the daily infection rate could be later in the year of the lifting of restrictions exceed 100,000.
The UK government is betting that its high vaccination rate will limit hospital stays and deaths. According to Our World in Data, by July 4, 68 percent of the population had received at least one dose of vaccine.
The UK of course reserves the right to reintroduce infection prevention measures. However, critics fear that lifting almost all restrictions could be more problematic than Secretary of State Javid thinks. And that includes the risk of Great Britain becoming a petri dish for new variants.
What that means for mortgage rates
All of this does not mean that the US economic recovery will not continue unabated. But investors view risks like this (and countless others) with caution. And that may explain, in part, why mortgage rates remain low.
Still, overall high growth in the US is likely in 2021. And that will almost certainly lead to higher mortgage rates soon. Unless things go terribly wrong …
Mortgage Rates and Inflation: Why Are Rates Rising?

The general trend in mortgage rates was clearly declining for much of 2020. And according to Freddie Mac, a new weekly all-time low was hit 16 times in the past year.
The latest weekly record low was recorded on January 7th when it was 2.65% for 30-year fixed-rate mortgages. But then the trend was reversed and interest rates rose.
However, those increases were largely replaced by declines in April, although these moderated in the second half of this month. Meanwhile, May saw declines that slightly outweighed the increases. Freddie’s July 1 report puts that weekly average at 2.98% (with 0.6 fees and points). Low compared to 3.02% the previous week.
Expert predictions for mortgage rates
Looking ahead, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) each have a team of economists devoted to monitoring and forecasting developments in the economy, real estate and mortgage rates.
And here are their current interest rate forecasts for the remaining quarters of 2021 (Q2 / 21, Q3 / 21, Q4 / 21) and the first quarter of 2022 (Q1 / 22).
The numbers in the table below apply to 30-year fixed-rate mortgages. Fannies were updated on June 16 and the MBAs on June 18. Freddie’s forecast is dated April 14, but it is now only updated quarterly. So the numbers look out of date.

However, with so many imponderables, current forecasts could be even more speculative than usual.
Find your lowest rate today
Some lenders have been terrified by the pandemic. And they are limiting their offerings to vanilla-flavored mortgages and refinancing.
But others remain brave. And you can still probably find the refinance, investment mortgage, or jumbo loan you want. All you have to do is look around.
But of course, no matter what type of mortgage you want, you should compare widely. As a federal regulator, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says:
Shopping for your mortgage has the potential to result in real savings. It may not sound like much, but if you save only a quarter point in interest on your mortgage, you will save thousands of dollars over the life of your loan.

Despite the fact that 45% of small businesses use paid ads, pay-per-click is still a concept that eludes many of us. But if half of small businesses are using it, we just can’t afford to ignore this channel, no matter how perplexing.
As a marketer, PPC is a skill that you should have in your tool belt — or at least have a basic understanding of.
This guide will help you grasp pay-per-click marketing in its entirety. To start, we’ll begin with the benefits of paid advertising and then get into some key definitions that you’ll need to know.
How does PPC work?
Pay-per-click, PPC, is a paid advertising model that falls under search engine marketing (SEM). With PPC, the advertiser only pays when people interact with their ad through impressions or clicks.
When done right, PPC can earn you quality leads. If you can create a seamless user journey (which you’ll learn how to do later in this piece), it could mean a huge ROI for your PPC efforts.
Pay-per-click advertising is most common in search engine results pages (SERPs), like Google or Bing, but is also used on social channels (although CPM is more common). If you’re wondering where you can find pay-per-click ads, they’re the results you see before and to the right of the organic search results. Benefits of PPC
So, why would you pay for ads when you can reach your audience organically through great content and strategically-placed keywords (otherwise known as SEO)?
The answer is: keywords have become increasingly competitive. This makes it more difficult for a business that doesn’t have the domain authority to get them into the top rankings on a search engine or in front of their target audience on a social platform. In fact, so many businesses are using ads that organic results often don’t even start until you’re further down the page.
That doesn’t mean you should ditch all SEO efforts completely — your paid advertising should complement your SEO strategy as opposed to replace it.

Paid advertising will help you rise to the top in a competitive market and be seen by potential customers who may not know that you exist. It can help you promote your next marketing initiative, improve brand awareness, or rank for difficult keyword terms. In other words, PPC is your shortcut to getting to the top within your niche. And, if done responsibly, PPC can be integral to your inbound marketing strategy.
PPC-Related Terms You Should Know
What’s a marketing channel without a few acronyms and a little jargon? If you’re going to enter the paid advertising space, there are a few terms you should know. Below, we review the main elements of a PPC campaign, ranging from broad to the more specific.
Search Engine Marketing (SEM)
The objective of all forms of digital advertising is to rank for a target keyword, and that can be done in a number of ways. Search Engine Marketing (SEM) refers to any digital marketing (paid or unpaid) done on a search engine, like Google, Yahoo, or Bing. SEM is an umbrella term that encompasses both paid advertising and search engine optimization, that is, ranking organically for keywords. It’s important to note that not all PPC occurs on search engines — social media has PPC ads, too (think: Facebook Ads).
CPC
Cost-per-click (CPC) is the amount that an advertiser pays for each click on your ad. CPC acts as your bid in an auction that determines where your ad will be placed. As you can imagine, a higher bid equates to better ad placement. You set your CPC at the maximum price you are willing to pay per click on your ad. What you actually pay is determined by the following formula: (Competitor’s Ad Rank / Your Quality Score) + 0.01 = Actual CPC. Let’s go over the terms in this equation so you know what you’re paying for:
Ad Rank
This value determines the position of an ad on a search engine results page. It’s equal to Maximum Bid x Quality Score.
Quality Score
This is the score that search engines give to your ad based on your clickthrough rate (CTR) — measured against the average CTR of ads in that position — the relevance of your keywords, the quality of your landing page, and your past performance on the SERP.
Maximum Bid
This is the maximum you’re willing to pay per click on you ad.

You can set your CPC to manual, where you determine the maximum bid for your ads, or enhanced, which allows the search engines to adjust your bid based on your goals. One of these enhanced options involves bid strategies that automatically adjust your bids based on either clicks or conversions.
PPC vs. CPC
PPC and CPC are not technically the same thing. PPC refers to a style of marketing that includes paying for advertisements. CPC, or cost-per-click, refers to the amount of money you spend on a single click on your ad.
CPM (Cost per Mille)
CPM, also known as cost per thousand, is the cost per one thousand impressions. It’s most commonly used for paid social and display ads. There are other types of cost-pers… like cost-per-engagement, cost-per-acquisition (CPA), but for the sake of preserving your mental space, we’re going to stick with clicks, a.k.a. CPC.
Campaign
The first step in setting up your PPC ads is determining your ad campaign. You can think of your campaign as the key message, or theme, you want to get across with your advertisements.
Ad Group
One size doesn’t fit all. That’s why you’ll create a series of ads within your campaign based on a set of highly related keywords. You can set a CPC for each ad group that you create.
Keywords
Each ad within your ad group will target a set of relevant keywords or key terms. These keywords tell search engines which terms or search queries you want your ad to be displayed alongside in SERPs. Once you determine which keywords perform best, you can set a micro CPC just for keywords within your ads.
Ad Text
Your keywords should inform your ad text. Remember, your Quality Score is determined by how relevant your ad is, therefore, the text in your ad (and landing page for that matter) should match the keyword terms that you’re targeting.
Landing Page
A landing page is a critical piece of your paid advertising strategy. The landing page is where users will end up once they click your PPC ad. Whether it’s a dedicated webpage, your homepage, or somewhere else, make sure to follow landing page best practices to maximize conversions.
Best PPC Platforms
Now that you understand the PPC basics, I’m guessing your next question is: Where should I advertise?
There are dozens of online spaces where you can spend your coveted ad money, and the best way to vet them is by taking a close look at your potential ROI on each platform.
The most popular advertising platforms are effective because they’re easy to use, and, most importantly, highly trafficked. But for a smaller budget, you might consider a lesser-known alternative to these key players. Some additional things to consider when choosing a platform are the availability of keyword terms, where your target audience spends their time, and your advertising budget.
Here a non-exhaustive list of some of the top PPC platforms.
Google Ads (formerly known as AdWords)

How many times a day do you hear the phrase “Let me Google that”? Probably more than you can count … hence why Google Ads is the king of paid advertising. On average, Google processes over 40,000 search queries every second, giving you plenty of opportunities to target keywords that will get your intended audience to click. The downside is that keywords are highly competitive on this platform, meaning a greater ad spend.

Bing Ads

Facebook Ads blend in with other posts on the platform.
Facebook Ads is a popular and effective platform for paid ads (more commonly used as CPM than CPC), mainly due to its specific targeting options. Facebook allows you to target users based on interests, demographics, location, and behaviors. Also, Facebook allows for native ads, which means ads are introduced and blend into the social feed. Not to mention, you can use Facebook Ads to advertise on Instagram as well.
AdRoll

AdRoll is a retargeting platform that advertises to people who have already visited your website. For instance, say someone read your article on cheese making. You can retarget them on other sites that they visit with display ads that advertise your online cooking classes. While retargeting is possible with Google Ads, the benefit of using AdRoll is that it can display ads on Google and social media sites, which gives you more opportunities to capture clicks or impressions, depending on your goal.
RevContent
RevContent focuses specifically on promoting content through PPC. It has the same impact as a guest post, where your content is displayed on an external site, except it’s in the form of an ad. You still bid on keywords and your advertisement is displayed next to content that is relevant to those keywords. With this platform, you’ll reap the benefits of a low CPC and highly engaged traffic.
How to Get Started with PPC Advertising
Now that you understand the benefits of PPC, have your key terms, and know what platforms you can advertise on, let’s dive into crafting a quality PPC campaign. You don’t need to tackle these items step-by-step, but you will need to work through each of them to ensure that you create an effective campaign.
Set Parameters
I know I wrote that you don’t need to do these things in order, but you should do this step first. Without parameters, you risk your ad being untargeted and ineffective. You want to put your ad campaigns into the context of your ultimate business goals. Consider how your paid campaigns will contribute to those goals. Then, think about what you want to accomplish with your ads — whether that be visits, sales, brand awareness, or something else — and how much you’re willing to spend to accomplish that goal.
Your ads should encompass a few things:
Who you want to target
Theme of your campaign
How you will measure success
Type of campaign you will run
Create Your Goals and Goal Metrics
Your campaign goals will give you something to show for your ad spend as long as you determine how you will measure those goals. Your goal metrics should not be confused with your campaign metrics, which we’ll discuss below.
Let’s touch on some common PPC goals and how to measure them.
Brand awareness is how familiar your target audience is with your company. It might be a good idea to look into display ads for this goal so you can supplement your copy with engaging imagery. You can measure brand awareness through social engagement, surveys, and direct traffic.
Lead generation is the direct result of having a relevant and engaging landing page to follow your paid ad. Since you will create a separate landing page for each ad group, you should be able to easily track lead conversions either in the Google Ads interface via a tracking pixel, or through UTM parameters, if you’re using a tool like HubSpot.
Offer promotion is great if you’re running a limited time offer, product or service discount, or contest. You should create a dedicated sign-up page or a unique discount code so you know which users came from your ad.
Sales can be measured by how much of your product or service is sold based on your paid ads. You should be able to track this through a quality CMS software or with attribution reporting.
Site traffic is a great goal if you have high-quality content throughout your website. If you’re going to spend money getting people to visit your site, you want to have some level of confidence that you can keep them there and eventually convert them into leads.
Choose Your Campaign Type
You don’t only need to know where you’ll advertise but also how. There are many different types of paid advertising campaigns, and the one that you choose depends on where you can reach your audience. That isn’t to say that you can’t advertise through various means; you can also try a combination of campaign types as long as you’re consistently testing and revising.
Search Ads are the most common type of PPC and refer to the text ads that show up on search engine results pages.
Display Ads allow you to place ads (usually image-based) on external websites, including social. There are several ways to buy display ads, including Google Display Network (GDN) and other ad networks.

Social refers to any ads that you see on social media, including Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram. You can pay to show up in your target audience’s social feed or somewhere else within their profile, depending on the platform.
Remarketing can use either cookies or a list of contacts that you upload to target people who have previously engaged with your company through some action. That action could be filling out a form, reading a blog, or simply visiting a page on your website.
Google Shopping is most effective for ecommerce sites. Your ad — including image, price, and a short product description — will show on a carousel on a search page based on your target keywords.
Perform Keyword Research
Each ad group you create needs to be assigned a set of keywords to target — that’s how search engines know when and where to display your ad. The general rule of thumb is to select between one to five keywords per ad group, and those keywords should be extremely relevant — your Quality Score depends on it.
Select keywords that are closely aligned with the specific theme of your ad group. If you find keywords you want to target that fall outside of one theme, you should create a separate ad group for them.
It’s important to note that you’re not stuck with the keywords you start with. In fact, you should closely monitor your keyword list throughout your campaign — eliminating those that don’t bring in the types of visitors that you’re looking for and increasing your bids on those that do. Do your best to select the most relevant keywords, but don’t feel pressured to get it 100% right the first time around.
Set Up Google Analytics and Tracking
Google Analytics is free to use so there’s no reason why you shouldn’t install it on your website. The tool provides you with insights into how your website is performing, how users are interacting with your pages, and what content is attractive to visitors. The information you can gather from Google Analytics can be used for PPC and beyond.
Best Practices for a Quality PPC Strategy
You didn’t think we’d let you spend your hard-earned money on advertisements without providing some best practices to follow, did you? Of course not. We want to make sure you succeed with your next PPC campaign. So, let’s get into some PPC strategy that will help you maximize your efforts and your budget.
As a note, we’re going to dive specifically into paid search ads (those little guys you see in search engines) here.
PPC Ad Copy
Bidding on targeted keywords will get your ad in front of the right people; good ad copy will get those people to click on your ad. Like your keywords, your ad needs to solve for the intent of the searcher — you need to give the searcher exactly what they’re looking for and make sure that is clear through the words you use.
Search ads are comprised of a headline, a URL, and a short description, and each of these have limited character requirements to follow. To make the most of this space, make sure your ad copy does the following:
Speak directly to your target persona
Include the main keyword that you’re bidding on
Provide an actionable CTA so the searcher knows what to do next
Make the offer appealing
Use language that matches your landing page copy
Perform A/B Split tests with your copy
Landing Page Best Practices
Arguably the most important element of PPC (after your ad copy) is the page that you send leads to after they click on your ad. This page needs to be highly targeted, relevant to your ad, deliver what was promised, and present a seamless experience. Why? Because the point of your landing page is to convert your new visitor into a lead or customer. Not only that, but a high-converting landing page will improve your Quality Score, leading to better ad placements. There’s nothing that will diminish PPC profits like a poorly crafted landing page.

Strong headline that mirrors your search ad
Clean design and layout
Responsive form that is easy to use with a stand-out CTA button
Copy that is very specific and relevant to your target keywords
Presents the offer that was promised in your ad
A/B tested
A/B Testing Your PPC Ads
Rarely will you as a marketer throw something out to your audience that works without testing. PPC campaigns are no different. A/B testing is as critical to your paid ad campaign as is every other element. The goal of testing your ad is to increase both your clickthrough rate and your conversion rate.
The good news is that ads are comprised of just four parts that you’ll need to test: headline, description, landing page, and target keywords. Small tweaks to just one of these elements can significantly alter your results, so you want to make changes one at a time so you can keep track of where improvements come from.
Since there are many variations that you could test one at a time, it’s a good idea to list out all the potential tests you can run and prioritize them by greatest impact. Finally, you should allow your ads to run long enough to gather the data you need and test them early enough so you don’t waste budget on a poor-performing ad.
Maximizing Your ROI
At a high level, maximizing ROI on your ad campaigns means considering customer lifetime value and customer acquisition costs, which will help you determine how much is worth spending on a new lead and how much of that spend can come from paid advertising.
To get more granular, we need to talk inputs and outputs, that is 1) lowering your input (cost per lead [CPL]) and 2) increasing your return (revenue). There are a few factors to keep an eye on that will affect both, so let’s break it down.
Ways to Decrease Inputs
Determine an ad budget before you get started.
Create more relevant ads. The more relevant, the lower your CPC.
Improve your Quality Score. The higher your QS, the less search engines will charge your for clicks.
Ways to Increase Revenue
Follow landing page best practices to increase conversion rates.
Go after quality leads by being specific with your ad. The more quality your leads, the more likely they will convert and eventually become customers.
Additional PPC Tips and Tricks
There are a few other things you can do to maximize the ROI of your paid ads, whether it’s time spent, budget, clicks, or conversions.

Google allows you to tailor your audience so you save marketing dollars and get in front of the right people. You can upload a customer list so that you don’t waste money on people who have already bought from you. Google also has options for prospecting audiences. For instance, In-Market Audiences employs user behavior tracking to put you in front of prospects who are in the market for a product or service like yours. You can also increase your bid for more relevant subgroups within your target audience — a practice called layering audiences. For example, HubSpot may layer on people who are in the market for CRM software and add a 30% bid adjustment because those people may be more likely to convert.
Bid Adjustments
Bid adjustments allow you to increase or decrease your bids based on performance. You can even make these adjustments based on different categories, like device, demographics, language, and more. For example, if a keyword isn’t performing as well on mobile as on desktop, you can add a negative bid adjustment so that when someone searches your keyword on mobile, you’ll bid X% lower than your normal bid.
Custom Ad Scheduling
You can set up ad scheduling in Google Ads to display your ad only during specific days and times. This can cut down on ad spend and improve relevance for your target audience.
Sitelink Extensions
Sitelink extensions allow you to supplement your ad with additional information. For instance, if you’re running an ad for a seasonal promotion at a local store, you can add a sitelink extension to display your store hours and location. These extensions take up more real estate on SERPs and, therefore, stand out. Not only that, but they play a role in improving your Ad Rank.
Conversion Tracking
Conversion tracking monitors how your landing page is performing via a tracking code that you place on the page where people land after completing your form (usually a “Thank You” page). By enabling this feature, you’ll be better equipped to make adjustments that can improve your conversions.
Keyword Monitoring
Don’t let too much time pass before you check how your keywords are performing. You can place higher bids on the keywords that are creating the best results for your campaign, and “defund” or eliminate others.
Match Types

Social Media Ads
Although CPM is more common on social platforms, social media sites do offer PPC that works similarly to search engine ads in that you set a budget and bid on ad placements. The difference is social media ads can show up directly in your news feed on most platforms, decreasing the effectiveness of ad blockers. Social platforms, like Facebook, let you set targeted demographics as well as target people based on interests. While paid search is more keyword-focused, paid social is broadens into a demographic focus, leading to more ways to target your persona.
Social media has two paid ad functions that are critical to ad success — retargeting and Lookalike Audiences. Retargeting is remarketing to people based on site visits or manually uploaded contact lists. Lookalike Audiences reviews the people on your marketing list and creates an audience that parallels your list, which expands your potential target. Paid social also allows for a wider variety of ad types, like images, videos, text, and more.

Paid advertising is not “set it and forget it.” You need to manage and constantly monitor your ads to ensure that you’re reaching optimal results. No Need For Pessimism
Why is everyone so pessimistic? After all…
IMF has raised its forecast for global growth from 3.1 % in 2016 to 3.5 % for 2017 and inflationary expectations remain muted. 2018 is projected to be even better than 2017.
Monetary authorities remain accommodative, interest rates remain amazingly low, and the financial system is awash in liquidity.
Earnings are accelerating with first-quarter gains the best reported so far in 7 years.
Trump’s pro-growth, pro-business agenda is on the horizon.
Global trade tensions have eased and fear of trade wars have diminished.
The U.S. has shown itself willing to defend human rights and long-term relationships rather than being an isolationist as many feared.
The U.S. is working well with China while becoming a growing adversary of Russia, North Korea, Syria and Iran.
OPEC and non-OPEC members are working together to maintain stability in the oil markets.
Change is everywhere creating opportunities for profitable investing yet investor sentiment is as negative as I have seen in some time. Virtually everyone is calling for a 5-10% correction at a minimum or saying that we have entered the next bear market. Few are calling for another leg up. I like those odds, as the majority is rarely right.
The preconditions for a market top are just not evident. And yes, corrections can come at any time but rarely happen when everyone is looking for it. Markets make tops when there is excessive optimism/exuberance and bottoms occur when pessimism is at its maximum.
I constantly review my core set of investing beliefs to see if and where I may need to make some adjustments. A successful hedge fund manager always has a bearish tendency thinking that the glass is half full. We always doubt ourselves looking for that missing fact(s) or perception that may alter our view. While we recognize that there are always global tensions and political uncertainties in the world, it is difficult to know when and if ever it will occur, so it is difficult to hedge.
How do you hedge against a possible “accident” with North Korea? It certainly appears that China is working hard to defuse the situation. After all, North Korea counts on China for virtually everything that it consumes including its energy. Did you hedge the Brexit vote? If so, how did that work out? France is up next, followed by Italy. I still expect that the Eurozone will need to make major changes or not survive.
The economic surprise so far this year is that China’s growth accelerated in the first quarter to 6.9%, the best performance since the fall of 2015 while the U.S. decelerated from a strong fourth quarter. IMF forecasts global growth of 3.5% in 2017. Here is a breakdown by region: U.S. growing 2.3% in 2017 up from 1.6% in 2016; China growing by 6.6% in 2017 versus 6.7% in 2016 and developing nations accelerating to a 4.5% gain in 2017 as compared to 4.1% in 2016. Global trade volume, an indicator of health in the global economy, is projected to rise by 3.8% in 2017 and 3.9% in 2018 versus 1.8% in 2016. What I find important is that the IMF has not factored much, if any, of Trump’s pro-growth agenda in its forecasts.
Comments last week out of key members of the ECB, BOJ and also our Fed supported the notion that monetary policy will remain accommodative. Both the ECB and BOJ specifically mentioned that their bond buying programs would be extended well into 2018 with no intentions to let any of the debt on their balance sheets run off. Stanley Fischer and other members of the Fed went out of their way to assure the markets that there may be only 2 more rate hikes this year and any roll off of debt, if it begins this year, will be very minor and won’t impact the markets as many pundits fear.
Germany’s 10-bunds finished the week at 0.25%; Japan’s 10-year JGB closed at 0.01% and the U.S. 10-year treasury at 2.25%. Finally did you notice the improved capital and liquidity ratios of all the major U.S. banks reported last week? As Jimmy Dimon said on JPM’s earnings conference “the economy is primed to accelerate, and we are ready to supply all the capital needed.” Other bank chairmen echoed his comments. One of our core beliefs remains that the supply of capital exceeds the demand for capital, which is good for financial assets.
First-quarter earnings calls have been excellent so far with revenues, volumes, margins and profits expanding at a faster pace than in the fourth quarter, which happened to have been the best overall earnings report in 4 years. I suggest that you listen to as many of these calls as possible to gain a sense of comfort that, in fact, the global economic environment, including the U.S. is improving. The chairman of Nucor, the best run and most profitable steel company in the world, commented that construction and infrastructure spending has already begun to pick up. By the way, Nucor had a sensational quarter and forecasted even better days ahead. The stock still sells at only 60% of the market multiple and remains undervalued. It is one of our core holdings. I continue to believe that second-quarter U.S. economic growth will snap back from a slow first quarter and the U.S. will expand by at least 2.3% in 2017 even before Trump’s agenda to “Make America Great Again” is enacted.
The next point is that it appears that Trump is about to re-introduce his healthcare bill, and surprisingly, will also announce his plan to cut both corporate and individual taxes next week. Clearly he would not come back with a rejiggered healthcare program unless it had sufficient support within his own party to pass the House. While the devil is in the details, I remain confident that Trump and his team learned from the last fiasco and won’t come forth with this or any major programs unless there was sufficient support to pass his own party. I fully expect changes in the Senate and then in committee will make these bills more palatable to both parties and eventually pass.
And then there is the infrastructure program, which I am most confident will pass Congress this year with only minor changes. The surprise will be that it won’t impact the federal budget much, if at all, as it will be publicly and privately funded. All of these programs, once passed, will accelerate U.S. growth into 2018 and 2019, which has not been factored into anyone’s numbers.
Trade has become a two-way bargaining chip with all our trade partners. China is the perfect example as we asked for China’s help in easing tensions with North Korea and offered “better” trades deals if successful. I remember all too well that the pundits biggest fear was that the U.S. would become isolationists no longer supporting our long-term partnerships like NATO and cause trade wars to erupt. Clearly our actions show differently, which has benefited our relations abroad. Also, I am glad that is appears that a border tax will not be part of Trump’s tax reduction program. It looks like Trump’s trade team will do everything in its power to promote a level playing field and enact punitive tariffs if dumping can be proven to protect our industries from unfair, illegal competition. Steel may be the poster child, but it will extend to aluminum and other industries too.
I am not surprised that OPEC and major non-OPEC nations are working to maintain stability in the energy markets holding oil prices above $45/barrel while aiming for $60/barrel. The Mideast countries could not support their domestic spending needs with oil below $45/barrel so they had to work together or go down together. And this includes Russia! The fly in the ointment is that U.S. shale production has recovered much faster than expected therefore the benefit of OPEC cutting production has been muted. OPEC has had no choice but to extend the cuts into the high demand summer months too. Oil prices should stay range-bound between $45-$60 per barrel which is good for both businesses and the consumer. Have you noticed that the price at the pump remains below $2.30 per gallon?
I want to end by elaborating on my belief, which is that all this change is creating tremendous opportunities to profit. Whether it's government, business or the consumer, the status quo is not a recipe for peace and prosperity. Technology is progressing at an amazing pace and disrupters are rising everywhere providing more services with better distribution at lower costs. You must always look towards the future.
Paix et Prospérité continues to outperform. We do not accept the status quo as fact and recognize that change is a dynamic and evolving process making passive management passé. If you don’t change along with it, you fall behind. We also know that change won’t happen overnight, so patience is a key virtue. We know how hard it is to stay conscious and present as the news bombards you throughout each day, but you must not react.
Don’t be pessimistic. The best is yet to come!

Future histories, and hope
Note: this is the follow-up to a previous letter on optimism and climate change.

Thanks for another great suggestion. You’re helping me write. :)
I suppose that’s true. Due to the way most humans have treated me most of my life, I tend to be less biased against favoring human beings. I’ve known we are unlikely to sustain ourselves since I was about 8 years.
But by now, I truly love and care about humanity, which gives the collective and unnessary suicide of my species a very bitter aftertaste.
I know for a fact that children can be monsters (I was not only on the receiving side), under the right pretence. If even children can act like monsters - normal children, not sociopaths - then surely adults can. Same mammalian group brain.
Context is the key here, the overall modifying factor to our behaviour. Given the right context, the most bitter isolated person can flourish into a warm-hearted beautiful being, within hours. Given several days, or weeks, in such a healing context could allow for a more sustained healing, one that might spread itself.
It is part of my focus and essential to my desires that contexts like this, environments that incentivize and promote loving and sharing, compassion, co-existence, be created and to be part of them.
I would not believe this if I had not experienced it, first hand, several times, in different environments and situations. I’ve also seen it switch from a brighter, open to a closed and darker outlook and vice versa; these are metastable resonant (social) states that can oscillate back and forth.
I’ve often felt that it is our day-to-day lives, our jobs, our economic situations, together with limiting social norms and believes about the self and humanity that are the real culprit here, the decisive factor. It is precisely (but not exclusively) this which I think any ‘healthy’ community should attain; freedom from the labour-wage relationship, newly defined social norms and rituals embedded in the story of a connected self and the economic freedom to join or leave the community.
However, there is a big discrepancy between the aforementioned, utopic, dream and the lives of most people. In cities, due to inflated house prices and related strong sense of private ownership of land and dwellings, most people do not have the freedom to leave their (often senseless and soon to be automated automated) jobs, their houses or their communities. In ruralities, modern farming and forestry has forced farmers to scale up and lower their margins, enabled by credits. Because their margins are diminishing with their yields, they are forced to degrade their own land with ever more intense extraction of resources while the time and monetary investments needed to switch to regenerative, sustainable methods are unavailable.
The overall sense, which pervades through all levels of society, from the rich to the poor, is that of scarcity; we have constructed an economic system poised on an ever expanding monetary realm, but the underlying physical, human and natural resource bases are diminishing as they are exploited. A focus on the short-term is incentivized by the rents payable together with refinancing requirements of debts that span timescales that a mismatch with nature’s regenerative potential.
In short, the challenge here is to translate profits on long (80-120y) and medium (15-80y) to short (2-15y) timescales, when working bottom-up, or to simply change the timescales at which financing is provided to aim for profits at the longest possible scale.
I, personally, deem the latter option most unlikely, although I do think that would be the most effective way to change our society in the most sensible and efficient way. It would require banks to completely overhaul their strategies, which again would force people away from the short-term ‘scarcity mindset’ to dreaming about, realistically achievable, abundance and regeneration.
As I am yet to be surprised by fundamental changes in the structure of our financial industries, forced or spontaneous, my angle is the bottom-up solution. Where groups of people create cooperative, regenerative, structures and financial instruments, parallel and connected to, the existing (financial) infrastructure. Whereas the long-term yields of existing structures tend to decline, those of regenerative structures keeps rising over time. Note that the difference can be very small as this accumulates over time.
This way, slowly but surely, the regenerative cultures will outlast and outperform the destructive ones, in terms of resources, energy and quality of life, which will make it an attractive option for those living within the current, degrading, system.
But be aware that, due to cultural, social and institutional momentum, especially developed countries might have a hard time allowing these regenerative structures to arrive. We are currently living in a very unsustainable comfort that we are very reluctant to give up. Even as many people in many countries will fall below this Western standard of living, possibly degrading all the way down to the poverty line, many tend to hold on to the ‘American dream’; ‘making it big time’, or possibly the centralized socialist ‘the state provides enough for everyone’.
These are the stories our societies still believe in, and it is these stories that need to be replaced. I am working on a better story or, at least, a more imaginative one. One that aligns with the limitations, the border conditions, set forth by climate and systems science. One that aligns with human and natural grace, and dignity.
But it will be a difficult story; the Free Ones, the heroes of this story, will have difficulties to overcome. Vested interests, the rich, living the nightmare of scarcity, will feel that the reclamation of their ‘rightful’ property, the lands, the houses, the money, is an assault on their ‘fragile’ sustenance, their freedom, as soon as larger movements are starting to form.
My best guess would be, to stay under the radar. Implementing a cultural virus, growing communities horizontally, decentrally. Each one connected to the next, all the way to a concentration sufficient for most people to know 1 or 2 friends living ‘outside the system’. That would be only several percents, at most (whereas it’s about 0.01% right now), but it would be sufficient.
As the dominant pattern in our society, the complete colonisation of our environment, will naturally degrade under the weight of the (material, energy, information) costs of its own sustenance, becoming ever more detrimental to basic freedoms as inequality grows manyfold, people are incentivized to grow previously marginalized alternatives.
Where, even though their may not be ‘enough’ food, people take care of each other. The weak are protected and there will be a dialogue with our environments.
Surely, this is just but one of many alternative ‘future histories’. And, as bright as it might sound, this ‘slow collapse’ scenario involves a great deal of dying, suffering, migration, degradation and poverty. Literally, hundreds of millions of people will be forced to move. Urbanities, especially megapolises, will experience immense resource stresses due to their high population density with regards to the solar surfaces they are exposed to.
Then, we should also allow the possibilities of other scenario’s, potentially in parallel. Solar energy is about to become cheaper than oil, which some say that together with a breakthrough in nuclear fusion, would (temporarily) solve our energy problems, allowing up to remain in a growth pattern until we’re forced to become an interplanetary society. Personally, I think these dreams are far-fetched, but some powerful voices adhere to them. But, as with my vision, part of them might turn out to be true.
Lastly, there is a darker vision and I have, sadly, not been able to shake it off. It is one where a centralized police state is losing over raging plunderers and militants. Where violent gangs rape and plunder the countryside, where no one is safe, while our planet is scavenged until the last resources are used up. It’s this scenario I often find myself confronted with; so what, if I live in a peaceful community, if there’s men with guns, will I protect my kids?
Anyways, I hope you appreciate my reflection. Consider it an invitation to dream with me.

*Pedophilia: I will not write anything involving romantic pairings with an adult or a child. If you think the ages might be questionable, please talk to me and I will work with you as best I can. There is a difference between two consenting adults and a teenager and an adult and so on.
*Incest: There will be possible exceptions when it comes to characters who are not blood related or who did not grow up together such as in the case of adoption. Again, talk to me if you think the content might be questionable, and I will see what can be done.
*Sexual Content: While I WILL write sexual content, there are certain kinks or fetishes that I will not write either due to being uncomfortable with them or not having any knowledge in them. Please contact me with questions if your prompt includes something like this.
*Out of Character (OOC): I will not write characters who would act wildly outside of how they are portrayed in the source material. While changes to them might be made depending on the story or AU, I will do my best to keep to how they come across in the source material (unless fanon is better).
*Overpowered Original Characters: I will not write Original Characters that have skills outside of what they could conceivably have, meaning I won’t write for a character that is gifted at everything, utterly perfect, and is attractive to everyone around them. (I will, however, be happy to write for a character who thinks they’re gifted, perfect, and a gift from god before finding out the horrible truth.)
