i, the worst of all (yo, la peor de todas) (1990) is not safe. after the vice-queen tells the priest to take a book back to juana, it cuts to a scene in the rain, and then to a nun v* in a room full of sick people, visual and sound, you can see the v* in the bucket she’s holding, and then it pans over to juana holding another nun v*, also visual and sound. the rest is safe.

Director María Luisa Bemberg was one of the first Argentinian women to direct feature films. Uniting the films in her filmography was the theme of women struggling to adjust themselves in finding their niches in a patriarchal world.

I, the Worst of All was one of her most acclaimed films, having premiered at the Venice Film Festival and receiving and honorable mention there. Based on the life of Mexican writer and nun Juana Inés de la Cruz, whose then-scandalous poetry offends an archbishop and the severe practices of her fellow nuns.

I, the Worst of All (María Luisa Bemberg, 1990) a biopic on the life of juana ines de la cruz, and of course my introduction to her. her struggle as woman/poet/nun/educated person during the spanish/mexican inquisition. a reminder that the undertrodden will get nothing unless they're worth something to someone, and only so long as that someone holds power. i thought it was decent but it was hard to keep complete enthusiasm with it. the whole film is set indoors in dim, candlelit rooms which by the end i was hoping for a sun or a tree but was happily and fittingly denied.
