A Guide to Making Portfolios
Tumblr media
Contributor applications are open, but I noticed that there’s a few people who may be confused or don’t know what certain parts of our guidelines mean. So, here’s a simple guide showing how to make a neat portfolio that obeys our instructions and requirements!
(I kind of refrained from making a bunch of lighthearted jokes or comments though, so I might’ve missed my chance on showing just how dorky I can get, haha!)
I’ll be covering both art portfolios and writing portfolios in this guide, but I also hope this helps out anyone who might need this sort of information in the future because this information doesn’t apply to just our zine! With that said, I’ll start with the very basics: getting to know cloud storage and sharing services, or in this case, Google!
Technically speaking, portfolios are basically any and all of the platforms you post your content into (like Tumblr, Instagram, DeviantArt, etc.). But, when you’re applying for something that requires you to show your works in a professional manner (such as in fanzines or IRL jobs), knowing how to organise your works can help you out in the long run!
Tumblr media
Google is such a versatile platform which allows everyone to have access to all (if not almost all) of their organisational and work-related products! As such, if you have a Gmail account, you should also have this wonderful privilege. One of their products, Google Drive, lets you store your files and organise them any way you want them! There’s a little box icon on the top right of the browser which will reveal all of the products you can use too, so if you don’t know what they are, it’s a good idea to explore a bit on your own time.
Tumblr media
Through Google Drive, you’ll be creating a folder which will serve as the place your files will be uploaded into. Keep in mind though that Google is not the only platform that offers cloud services! Dropbox is an example of another popular platform among others.
In this example, I’ll be referring to our zine’s contributor applications. Make a new folder in your Google Drive by clicking on that big ol’ “New” button, and use that button again to upload 3-8 of your works for our zine’s applications. Or, drag and drop files. It’s surprisingly fun to do and watch!
Be sure that your folder’s privacy settings is open! Just activate the folder’s shareable link (as in anyone with the link can have access to it), and it’ll let us look at all of your examples without trouble!
Tumblr media
But, why do you want us to do this, you might ask?
Like I mentioned earlier, knowing how to organise your things helps you out in the long run! But in our case, if an applicant chooses to send us a form with a portfolio that doesn’t quite follow our requirements (such as putting an entire gallery or website with all their works)...
Tumblr media
Well, it’s going to be an inconvenience to the moderators because there are going to be a lot of applications to go through within a limited time frame. We simply won’t have the time to look for your best works in a portfolio showcasing all of your pieces. We set a maximum limit of 8 examples for portfolios for that reason!
Any added works will not be considered in the examples, and any applications with galleries or websites sent to us as their portfolios will have a VERY low chance of being considered at all.
Instead, make that neat little folder shown previously and individually add the files you want to share! It won’t take up a lot of your time, I promise. That way, you can make sure you’ve chosen your most quality works, and we can review your application in a timely manner! This method is the most preferred way for us to receive portfolios.
Writers, if you are unfamiliar with Google Drive, this process can apply to you as well. Make a new folder, label it appropriately, and upload your files! Word documents can be transferred instantly, so fear not for your formatting – you’re in good hands. However, if you are concerned about it, I suggest that you take a look at Google Docs. You can copy and paste your works there instead, either all three written examples in one document or three separate documents in the folder.
Realistically, not following the rules sets a bad impression on the people reviewing your portfolio. We want to see your best work, and we want you to feel confident in your examples! If you show us that you can’t follow simple and easy tasks such as organising your works, then we’ll get the impression that you’ll do the same elsewhere. Regard this as though you are preparing for an actual job interview because this helps with your reputation as well.
So, what can I do to ensure my chances to be considered?
This is a section that is more for art than it is for writings; but here’s a general consensus for what kind of submissions or examples are expected and what is not expected!
Tumblr media
A bad portfolio consists of little variety among the shown examples. If your examples are mostly made of your subjects in several different angles, that’s alright, but if there’s a lack of principles of art (such as rhythm, movement, proportion, variety, etc.) then the portfolio wouldn’t really be very interesting to the judges. Sketches, while some look nice, aren’t good examples because zines require complete pieces!
For written stories, the worst possible examples out of so much more that you can present in a portfolio are: bad understanding of characterisation (out-of-character factor), mediocre understanding of grammar (or unedited versions), and uninteresting.
Tumblr media
A good portfolio shows a clear understanding of the elements and principles of art. There’s variety among the pieces which shows creativity and thought. Properties like different colour schemes, addition of environments, angles, and etc. are things that make portfolios interesting to look at.
For writing, having a good grasp of grammar, understanding of characters, and personal style are good indicators that your writing is well done and given some thought! In other words, it allows the readers to feel engaged with, which in turn makes it more interesting.
But, most of all:
Tumblr media
Your pieces have to be related to the zine’s theme! It’s different for every zine, of course, but generally, application reviewers look to see if the applicant is genuine about liking the concept(s) behind their projects, and that the applicant can portray or illustrate the subjects of the zine well with the skills presented among the examples.
Wanderlust revolves exclusively around BakuDeku, and so, seeing examples with both of them featured in your works will guarantee you, one-hundred percent, a spot for consideration.
Sounds good to me! But, can you clarify what to avoid?
As previously suggested, guidelines are made to make sure the reviewing process goes as smoothly as possible for the moderators or judges. I’ll be using our own guidelines for this example as well!
Since many zines like to request for a number of linked examples in their forms for their portfolios, we understand that it might be a force of habit or something that some people may consider easy to do. But, I’ll say this once again: we require prospective contributors to create their portfolios through a shared folder (lots of cloud services exist!) because it saves us, the moderators, a lot of time from copying and pasting every single link!
When you show us your social media links, don’t do it like this:
Tumblr: @ariririsu
Twitter: @ariririsu
Give us the actual links to your platforms! This also saves us a lot of time instead of typing it down. We would be ever so grateful and happy if you do this.
Keep your examples up to date! We don’t want to see what you could do back then. We want to see what you can offer us now. It’s like selling a bunch of pastries at a bake sale, but you’re selling us pastries made two years ago. Your most recent works gives us the most accurate and best representation of your skills.
Once again, incomplete sketches or written drafts are no-no’s. If you want to know what I’m talking about when I mentioned the principles and elements of art, here’s a neat little roster that breaks down what makes compositions in artworks more three-dimensional and interesting.
Going over the specified number of examples will not affect your chances of being accepted in the zine. So, if you add two or three more works in your portfolio, rest assured that we will not even look at them. For the same reason I mentioned beforehand: there is going to be a lot of applicants, and we want to get the reviewing process done as soon as possible to maintain our schedule. Less mess, less stress.
Some Pieces of Advice:
Have some confidence in your works! If you feel super shy and you’re still building up that confidence, the judges would be more than happy to supply you with feedback if you ask for it. Their feedback will not be destructive, but it will be meant to help you improve your skills. Take whatever advice they give you and at least put them into consideration too!
Zines and other huge projects like these take a lot of your time. One thing that I’ve seen people commonly do is that they miscalculate the amount of time and commitment they can put into these projects, and they often have to leave them. Doing so will negatively affect your reputation. So, when you’re not sure if you can dedicate a lot of time to the zine, we highly suggest that you don’t apply to keep the game fair to others who want to be in the zine as well.
Communication is VERY important in these projects. Never ever disappear on the projects without saying something because it’s going to cause the moderators to have to find ways to contact you and be very worried if something happened to cause the sudden disappearance. Like the previous point, doing so will negatively affect your reputation.
Just so you know, you’ve got time to make your portfolios if you don’t have enough examples! You can literally apply at the last minute and it would still count!
Again, be sure that your Google Drive folder’s settings are shared to those who has the link!
And with that, I hope I was able to make a nice guide which emphasises certain rules in our own zine guidelines as well as how to make a good portfolio! I’m not sure if there are other guides like these around, but I hope I got a bunch of general zine rules correct.
We look forward to seeing your applications! Our zine applications close on January 12, and we can’t wait to see what you have in store for us!

Super Smash Flash 2 Download Ultima Version
Tumblr media
The program is sometimes distributed under different names, such as 'Super Smash Flash 2 Beta'. The following versions: 1.2, 1.1 and 1.0 are the most frequently downloaded ones by the program users. The latest version of the program can be installed on PCs running Windows 7/8/10, 32-bit. Super Smash Flash 2 1.0.3 Beta is here! It's time to fight with the iconic Nintendo characters, the most powerful warriors from anime universes, and heroes of games from Sega, Capcom, and Bandai. Developed by McLeod Gaming, it's a continuation of the famous Super Smash Flash and one of the largest Flash games ever made.
The most popular Smash fangame on the internet has received its biggest update yet – 3 years in the making!
Are you ready to experience… SUPER SMASH FLASH 2 BETA?
NOTE: This game is still very much a work in progress. If you’d like to assist with the development, please click here.
…Super Smash what? – Super Smash Flash is back! You do remember us, right? The original Smash Bros fangame, most popular for content and difficulty, rather than gameplay, Super Smash Flash was…well, Super Smash in a Flash. It showed very few similarities to the actual Smash Bros gameplay as it was our first game, yet still somehow attracted large crowds of people. Now, with the knowledge we’ve picked up along the way, we’re striving for the utmost quality this time around. Super Smash Flash 2 is not a game made by one person in a month, like SSF1. Super Smash Flash 2 is a game made by hundreds of people over several years. It will be one of the biggest Smash bros fan-games – no. One of the biggest Flash games, to date. We promise.
Is this actually made in Flash? – It is, and one of our major product goals here is to show that Flash is underestimated and underappreciated. If we can make a console-quality game with controller support, online mode, and 10 years worth of custom art, so can you. No other programming interface would allow us the kind of convenience and workflow that we have with Super Smash Flash 2 without custom tools. Flash is incredible for creating video games and animations with a low barrier to entry and an incredibly simple interface. (tl;dr stop calling for Flash to die, jerks)
Why does your game have a Wikipedia page? – I have no idea but we’re really excited about it.
This isn’t listed on Twitch! Can I stream/watch SSF2 Beta live? Unfortunately, Twitch does not list us as a game. We suggest using YouTube Gaming!
Super Smash Flash Free Download
Tumblr media
Do you have a Discord? We do! Please note that invitations are not always open, so if the link doesn’t work please check back again later.
Tumblr media
Can I use my gamepad? – If your OS recognizes it, and you’ve got drivers… yes! Please note, at this time only the downloadable version of the game (to your right) supports gamepads due to shortfalls and discrepancies in support between the browsers.
Where’s the best place to find matches? – Our partners over at Anther’s Ladder run an awesome chat with matchmaking built right in! Check it out here.
Can you add (insert character here)? – Unfortunately with a game of this scale, we need to plan things out ahead of time so that we can finish the game at some point. At this time we cannot accept content suggestions for this reason. Sorry!
How can I support your development? – We are not accepting any monetary compensation on behalf of Super Smash Flash 2. The best way to support us is to keep playing. It’ll make us happy. Hopefully it’ll make you happy too.
WHERE IS THE FULL VERSION?! – Super Smash Flash 2’s Beta release is our final full-featured update to our public release before the full game. We’re hard at work and well on our way, and we allow you to experience our progress along the way – that is the point of Super Smash Flash 2’s demos.
Are there combos in Super Smash Flash 2? – Absolutely. Super Smash Flash 2 has low landing lag, high hitstun, and high gravity, leading to an exhilarating combo game with lots of mixups that will still feel right at home to those coming from any of the official Smash games – even ones where combos don’t exist. This is one of our major project goals.
Super Smash Flash 4 Download
Which Smash game is SSF2 based off of? – Ah, I see you noticed that SSF1 was based off of Melee, huh. Well, think of SSF2 as a Frankenstein. We’re smashing together a “Greatest Hits” type deal with our engine, feel, and aesthetics, but we’re also taking our own creative liberties as well. There’s no definite answer to this question!
Well, in terms of engine? – SSF2’s engine is Frankenstein’d too. At first glance, it’s very reminiscent of Smash 4, actually; some of the more obvious engine aspects will make that clear right away (with the low landing lag, high-ish hitstun, high gravity, etc.) But it goes deeper than that, and this will become more apparent as the game matures and we begin activating our other engine aspects.
Do characters have complete movesets? – Absolutely. Some characters have placeholder animations at the moment, but they will all be remedied before the full release.
Does this work on Mac/Linux? – SSF2 runs better on Mac than on most Windows computers, actually! As far as Linux, you can always play our game using Chrome until we get an executable finished up.
Is online mode planned? – It’s in!! https://rhinoloading62.tumblr.com/post/654800507240677376/thanksgaming-potatoes. 🙂
Super Smash Flash 2 V0.9b
What about L-Cancelling or (insert some complicated Smash Bros-related acronym here)? – Probably not included. As far as L-cancelling though, SSF2 has globally reduced landlag (some call this ALR – Aerial Lag Reduction), and instead of being move-specific, it’s mostly character specific with a few exceptions, ranging from 3 to 12 frames (at 30 FPS). If we gave you L-cancelling, you probably wouldn’t need to use it often.

– It’s in!! 🙂
Happy new year to all!
The year 2021 has (finally) arrived, and looking back we had a busy past year with the SSF2 Rotation Release Cycle and the announcement of Fraymakers! After a year like that many of you may be wondering what’s in store for this year at McLeodGaming.
The End of Flash Player
Many of you probably already know that the end of Flash Player support arrived today, with the full transition to being globally disabled arriving on January 12th, 2021. As the creators of one of the most ambitious Flash-based projects on the internet, it pains us greatly to see it go. Flash is what allowed SSF2 to blossom into the ultimate Smash tribute that you see today, and it’s also what put McLeodGaming on the path to being a real independent game studio in the early 2000s. We may never see a technology exactly quite like Flash again in the future, and we think it’s important to look back and appreciate how it allowed all sorts of creative individuals to express themselves, despite all of the negative press.
On the bright side, a project called Ruffle has been underway for quite some time to emulate the Flash Player in-browser without requiring a plugin. It’s made great strides supporting tons of games from the ActionScript 2.0 days, including an almost fully-functional Super Smash Flash 1 (which we’ve enabled a toggle for on the Super Smash Flash home site, go check it out!). It may be some time before we see SSF2 supported since the game is built in ActionScript 3.0, but in the meantime you can always download the game to play on your desktop using Adobe AIR in place of the Flash Player.
(By the way, if you’d like to support such an awesome project, we encourage you to check out Ruffle’s Open Collective page)
SSF2 Development
Rest assured, despite the demise of the Flash Player and the end of the Rotation Release development cycle, SSF2 isn’t stopping any time soon! While the SSF2 Team is going to start off a bit slower this year, there are plenty of content plans in the pipeline. Expect more news to come as the team begins picking up the pace again.
Tumblr media
Also please be aware that moving forward, the primary source for SSF2 news and content will be found onSuperSmashFlash.com. While we may mention SSF2 updates here on McLeodGaming from time to time, the optimal place for uninterrupted, dedicated updates can be found there (and most existing SSF2 pages here will be automatically redirected). Also make sure to follow SSF2’s new Twitter account and subscribe to its new YouTube channel so you don’t miss out anything!
Super Smash Flash 2 V0 9 Unblocked Download
Fraymakers Development
Team Fray is excited to continue with the development of Fraymakers after its incredible Kickstarter campaign! There are plenty of characters to be animated, stages to be designed, and music tracks to be laid down, so you can expect us to be quite busy getting ready for Early Access launch. We’re already seeing some fun data come in via our Backer Content Survey (exclusive to backers only!), in addition to a lot of buzz throughout our socials about all the things everyone is looking forward to in Fraymakers. Make sure to join our socials listed over in the sidebar so you don’t miss any updates!
If you were unable to support the Kickstarter and are hoping to help in some way, one great method to do that is to wishlist Fraymakers on Steam. This way you’ll be notified when the game is released in Early Access and it’ll help add momentum to our initial launch.
Tumblr media
Anyway, that’s all for now. Talk soon!

Creating Vector Graphics
While making icons for StoryDevs it became obvious that raster graphics (i.e., images made of pixels) wouldn’t cut it. I wanted to be able to scale the images up or down without losing quality. This post is about me learning how to make vector graphics and the best free program I could find to make them.
Part 0: What Are Vector Graphics?
Most images you interact with on a computer are probably raster images which are made up of a grid of pixels. Common formats for such images are JPEG, PNG, GIF, and so on. When you zoom in on a raster image you can see the individual pixels, and scaling them up tends to look pretty nasty.
Tumblr media
In contrast, vector graphics are made up of paths as shown below. You can zoom in forever and it will always be sharp as only the path info is saved, not the pixels that represent them on your screen. When you zoom in on a vector graphic it essentially re-renders the path again so it’s always smooth and clean:
Tumblr media
Paths can be straight or curved. Paths can be stroked, which means a coloured line follows the path (as in the gif above), or they can be filled, meaning the interior of the shape is filled with colour. As far as I know, the only vector graphic format supported in modern web browsers SVG — Scalable Vector Graphics.
Part 1: Everything Is A Nail
I’m a 3D artist who can do a little digital painting if bullied. My first approach was to avoid learning a new skill and instead try mapping the problem to a domain I was already confident in. I had Blender and Photoshop installed but Photoshop barely does vector stuff. That left Blender.
Tumblr media
Above you can see I modeled the icon for writing Blender. I then downloaded an old Python script that allowed you to render line art to an SVG file. This turned out okaaaay but there was a problem: it wasn’t exporting curves where there were curves… it was exporting segmented paths.
So this meant every time the line curved slightly it created a new segment, leading to a somewhat jagged line. Furthermore, the lines weren’t properly connected in the corners for some reason.
Tumblr media
As you can see above the Blender SVG output was janky; you can see the segments even at normal zoom levels. Unfortunately I didn’t know the reason it looked bad at this point. So in the process of troubleshooting it I opened up the SVG file in my text editor. This is how it looked:
Tumblr media
To my surprise it was written in XML (eXtensible Markup Language)! XML is similar to HTML — they’re both languages for categorising and storing data. The tags in each language are used to describe the data. If your document has a title, for example, you’d wrap it in a title tag <title>Like This</title>.
For now just ignore everything and look at the <path> tags with a bunch of numbers inside them. Those numbers describe the positions for points along the path. They’re all floating point numbers (i.e., they have a fractional part after the decimal point) rather than integers (whole numbers).
I’d read online that SVGs render best in browsers when there’s only integer values. I don’t know if that’s true, but I thought maybe that was why it was turning out screw-y looking. So I wrote a Python script that read SVG files and rounded the numbers up/down. Here was my script:
Tumblr media
This had absolutely no effect! I was pretty pissed off by this point but it lead to a new idea: maybe what I’m seeing is the jagged-ness of polygons. There must be a lot of path segments due to it recreating the polygons as line segments… so maybe if I put it into an online optimiser it’d reduce the segments into curves?
After some searching I found an SVG optimiser online. I decided to try it. The file became much smaller but it didn’t look any better. At this point it became undeniable that Blender was not suited for this task.
Part 2: Get A New Tool
I already knew Inkscape and Adobe Illustrator existed. I had a bad experience once with Inkscape and I don’t want to talk about it. Illustrator is too expensive for me because I want the programs I use to be on-hand incase I want changes. I can’t afford a monthly subscription.
I decide to use Inkscape. It’s a good program in a technical sense — it has a lot of features — but it was just as confusing as I’d remembered. I’m sure there’s an internal logic for why things are the way they are, I just don’t know it. Still it’s a decent program and I made my icon in it.
Tumblr media
As an aside: SVG doesn’t support branching paths. I didn’t realise this for a long time and kept trying to make the outer part of the page icon above a single path. Eventually I found this out and ended up making the fold on the upper-right of the writing icon as a separate path:
Tumblr media
Using a dedicated vector program also allowed me to snap lines to the grid. This was another suggestion I’d read about creating SVGs that would supposedly help them render better in the browser. I dunno if that’s true but it couldn’t hurt. Something else I could do was use curves:
Tumblr media
Notice how there’s only four control points (the grey diamonds)? That means the SVG file only needs to store these four positions rather than hundreds of little segments. This made the file quite small even before it was put through the optimiser.
Anyway, I exported it and ran it through the online optimiser. The result looked good and the file size was smaller. Below is a comparison of the files. The first attempt where I used Blender is on the left, while Inkscape + the online optimiser is on the right.
Tumblr media
Much, much better. I integrated the icons I created into the site to see how they’d look when shrunk down. I was pretty happy with the result:
Tumblr media
I didn’t feel like creating all the icons at that point so I took a break to do some client work as well as other programming tasks for StoryDevs.
Part 3: The Best Free Vector Graphics Program
When I came back I decided to look for something more easier to use than Inkscape. A couple months back I followed Ubuntu on Twitter since that’s the flavour of Linux that runs on StoryDevs servers. During my search I happened to see a vector art program shared by the Ubuntu account called Gravit Designer.
Tumblr media
Overall it’s much easier to find what you’re looking for and it’s free! It’s a program for graphic art that looks like it was designed by graphic artists. I’ve only used the program a bit and while I was initially frustrated by some things, it seems like this is what I’ll be using from now on.
Conclusion
So that’s it! I skipped over the process of integrating the SVGs into the site because that’s another blog post right there. I’m probably going to recreate all StoryDevs’ existing branding and icons as SVGs at some point but for now they’ll remain raster images until I have some time to spare.
If you like what I’m doing with StoryDevs or you got some value out of this post (or both!), consider supporting me on Patreon. Sharing also helps :)

The initial overseas Cocos user: How to release the overall game to Viber, a platform with 1 billion users?
With the increase of the wave of ultra-casual games at home and abroad in recent years, a growing number of domestic and overseas game manufacturers are discovering the value of the track, in order to effectively avoid the heavy large-scale games gathered by large companies and focus on more It is ideal for innovation in the field of various casual games and social apps that reflect the creativity of gameplay. One of the earliest overseas users of Cocos Creator, Groovy Antoid from Lebanon, is really a small group of 6 individuals. Since 2015, it is rolling out many fascinating and fun informal games in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, and contains also earned a good income. Bitcoin Currently, they're spending so much time to bring HTML5 games to the popular instant chat software Viber. We are fortunate to invite Mohamad Kotob, the lead programmer of Groovy Antoid, to talk about their sport development history and work at home opportunities on Viber. Interview Record Hi, can you introduce yourself to our readers? My name is Mohamad Kotob and I am the lead programmer of Groovy Antoid. Groovy Antoid is a start-up game advancement studio of Techstars, headquartered in Beirut, Lebanon, authorized in the United States, the target is to create a unique, sophisticated, fascinating and quirky combined casual game. One of our works, "Body fat Bunny: Endless Hopper", has already established a lot more than 1 million downloads so far, and is widely loved by players. It has won 2 awards at IMGA MENA 2017 and was chosen for the Indie Prize display award at the 2017 Informal Connect USA. That is an endless horizontal jumping game, the protagonist is a cute rabbit, you can test the player's skills of timing. We have received a huge selection of email messages from enthusiasts expressing their like for this adorable rabbit. These achievements have got more enhanced the eyesight of our whole team and the inspiration to create more appealing game characters. When did you first enter video games? I have already been a brilliant gamer since I was a kid. Fortunately, there exists a father who is as fanatical about technology when i am. He bought a computer when I has been very youthful, but I quickly monopolized it (the strength is cheating, excellent). In the long days and nights, I performed arcade games, simulation games and Flash games, from RPG to RTS, and then to MMO. Finally, I couldn't assist but start understanding how to make games by myself and search for programming resources on the Internet. How did you obtain into this market? Actually, before joining Groovy Antoid, I have been engaged in sport development for many years with some other independent programmers. Creating interesting games is an exciting task, and I have already been exploring "trend" systems and motors to find the most suitable technology for the project. After completing many different types of projects with various tools and engines, by chance I joined Groovy Antoid, a separate team. Groovy Antoid started as a project initiated by amateur game developers with enthusiasm. They utilized to make games together just for enjoyable or game advancement competitions, and they have developed right into a professional game firm. You are one of the first users to use Cocos overseas, why did you choose us? After evaluating several other options, we found that Creator provides the nearly all mature engine/editor experience overall and made a decision to use Cocos Creator. For us, it is essential that designers and creative designers have an user interface to integrate video game art and UI design. The design of the engine is also very intuitive. If the developer has encounter with other motors, its internal architecture is simple to grasp. What type of video games are mainly utilized to build up Cocos Creator? We've been using Cocos Creator to create casual games with innovative gameplay. With the effective cross-platform abilities of the engine, these games could be simply deployed to several instant game systems (Viber, Facebook, etc.).
Tumblr media
After using Cocos Creator, we can focus more on game development and quickly construct games for all your targets we need after the tools are in place. We have used Cocos Creator to complete all the work from arcade form drawing games to physical item stacking games; we've also used keel components for character animation, and the tweening system for complex visible effects. Generally, we have been able to utilize the mature element library that is included with Cocos Creator to complete a lot of work. Cocos Creator "general" components could be reused anywhere, that is quite convenient. I like this very much. This helps it be very simple to include localized parts, any person in the group can attach it to the label and hyperlink it to our localized string. In addition, you can also use more advanced features to increase the UI components, such as the box will expand once the label width changes. Benefiting from the JavaScript ecosystem, integrating external plugins in addition has turn into a breeze. We are able to adapt the prevailing shapes-gestures library without having to create the algorithm ourselves from scratch. This also implies that we are able to make our own scripts as standalone plug-ins and reuse them in the project. Running the game directly within the browser can also speed up the iteration speed, and help the usage of the net console to simply debug concerns to find errors and places that need optimization. Is it possible to introduce Viber to Chinese developers? Viber is an instant chat software program with an increase of than one billion registered users and is popular overseas. Viber is a pioneer in the IM industry for many years, and they adopted features such as for example stickers and voice notes much sooner than almost every other popular platforms. What is the opportunity to develop the overall game with the Viber team? We think that the real-time game industry has great potential, and the Rakuten Games and ViberPlay groups will always be very open up and supportive to designers. Viber includes a big and healthy consumer foundation, and through their SDK to help ViberPlay achieve seamless development. They also provided us with beneficial suggestions on how to best develop and deploy multiple instant game systems once the ecosystem is not yet mature and steady. We have been developing instant video games for ViberPlay video games for pretty much two years and have launched many games on the platform. This collaboration brings us the chance to reach hundreds of millions of players, supportive suggestions from the ViberPlay team, and a comfortable advancement and deployment process, especially when we use Cocos Creator for development. Furthermore, with the advantage of the system, we can immediately attract a large number of users without the marketing, and when we promote marketing, we are able to get thousands of users. Many game systems have too many games, leading to many video games never getting the required exposure. The ViberPlay and Rakuten Video games teams have ensured that the platform is well managed, and customers can simply obtain high-quality new video games and make them well-known through ranking improvements. What challenges should developers find out about when working with Viber? The ViberPlay platform is still an HTML5 game platform. Developers have to optimize their video games to get a smaller package size and shorter loading time, and to make sure that it works easily on a variety of different devices. A large number of users want constant updates and real-time services, and quick iteration is vital for instant public games. At this time, Cocos Creator has taken us a huge help. It greatly decreases the bottleneck between art and code, making it possible to iterate quickly in the advancement procedure. Everyone on the group can integrate their work without waiting for programmers. Making use of Cocos Creator to build intended for Viber is very simple. We have a one-click button to instantly export from Cocos Creator utilizing the command line, and add the mandatory SDK, and upload the final zip package to Viber for deployment. Actually, the Cocos Creator tool can be recommended by the programmers of Rakuten Games and ViberPlay. They often shared the very best internal resources and suggestions with us. Do you have anything to say concerning the future? We will continue to use Cocos Creator to build up HTML5 and cell phone games, and make great games that we are proud of! Personally, I'm very happy to see that WebAssembly and WebGPU have shown great potential in the field of browser games. As a studio, we have been constantly developing and creating our next exciting sport, so keep tuned in! The above may be the overseas information that Kotob brings us. It is great to see a lot more designers realize their desires through Cocos Creator. The Cocos engine provides the best tools and the most comprehensive platform for game programmers to release games, allowing developers to target more on the quality and growth of games, and easily achieve one-click release and full platform deployment. We will also bring you more posting from overseas programmers from time to time, and partners who wish to talk about are welcome to get hold of us on any time~

Can i ask for Knights + Adonis and Eichi's headcannon if their s/o like writing fanfics and stuffs? Thanks! Have a good day ~ x3
ohohoho what a good request !!! and it’s definitely not because as a writer i can totally relate i hope you like it ! ♥ - mod mademoiselle
Tsukasa :
He’s so excited !!! His immediatereaction when he learned you write often was to ask if he could read yourfanfics. “… Why are you making such a troubled face ? Could it be that youdon’t want to… ?”
Really enthusiastic about anythingyou write, no matter the theme or quality. He loves to give you feedback andadvice too ! He doesn’t write himself, but he reads a lot, so his perspectiveand opinion are definitely valuable to you.
He doesn’t even care if he doesn’tknow the source material. He’ll read your fanfics no matter what ! His favoritegenre is mystery but he likes anything you do, really. Unless it’s a bit risky: he’s not good with that kind of things…
He often suggests you look intowriting a book of your own in the future ! If you already have plans, he wantsto hear about them now. The characters, the setting, the plot… He wants to know about everything ! Expect him to be really supportive too.
Tsukasa’s just so happy you sharehis passion for literature, although in a different way ! He thinks it’sdestiny, and considers it as more proof you’re made for each other.
Arashi :
He’s pretty curious about what youwrite ! He likes it when you talk about ideas for settings or plotsyou’ve had recently, while he’s doing your nails or your hair. He knows quite alot about your favorite characters now.
He doesn’t really like reading, butadmitted he loves reading your fanfics ! They’re different, since he can feelyou in them. He’s a fan, too ! You even got him into your favorite seriesthrough fanfiction.
What he loves most is fluff !There’s nothing that makes him happier than reading about a couple finallyrealizing they’re truly in love with each other. Even the corniest, mostclichéd one-liners work super well on him. He’s also a sucker for angst, though.
He started shipping your favoritepairings as a result of reading your works. Now you can gush about howwell-matched they are together.
He’s super proud of your artisticstreak and he’s constantly encouraging you to explore it ! It’s part of whatmakes you awesome, to him.
Ritsu
He’s not terribly bothered to checkout what you write, but he thinks it’s nice to date someone artistic. Yourhobby gives you a different perspective on things, and he’s happy about it !
Loves to act like he doesn’t reallycare, but he’s bragging about you to his friends. He may also have exaggerateda little bit. Now all your common friends are convinced you’re writing anactual novel.
He checked out a couple of your ficsand is now harassing his friends to read them too and leave reviews. He can’tbe bothered to do it himself, actually.
While he’s trying his best to besupportive, he’s the absolute worst at giving impressions about your writing. He can’t find anything other than “It’s good” or “I liked it” to say, eventhough he genuinely likes your works.
He’d never ask you directly, buthe’d be pretty excited if you wrote thriller horror someday. It would be twiceas intense if he knew you were the one writing it all !
Izumi :
You can bet he’s read everything youever posted already. He wants to know everything about you, and reading whatyou write is like seeing an intimate side of you, to him ! He wants to knowwhenever you just wrote something so that he can check it out.
Will leave reviews. Lengthy reviews. With his detailed impressions and opinions and all. He does it under adifferent username every time, but you just know it’s him now.
Even though he tries to play itcool, you got him pretty hooked on fanfictions now. He especially likes steamy fanfics. He just dearly hopes you never get to know it. He’s an expert at reading them with a straight face, too.
He’s super proud of you ! He won’tstop gushing about how lucky he is to have someone so talented all to himself, and he gets defensive whenever someone else compliments your fics.
To him, your talent for writing isanother one of your quirks, or something else that sets you apart from thecrowd. And he absolutely loves it.
Leo :
He’s really glad you understand him and his inspiration-driven lifestyle ! Composing music is more than his passion, it’s what he lives for, so he’ssecretly relieved you also get what it’s like to create art out of nothing.
Will read your fanfics, even thoughhe doesn’t understand much. He’s super curious about them since they come fromyou ! And, well, you also take interest in his own art, so he wants to repaythe favor.
He wants to know if you can writepoetry too ! He thinks his lyrics kinda suck, and he’s been wanting to havesomeone write some for him for a long time. To him, no one else but you wouldbe more qualified for the job ! You know him so well, after all.
Kinda wants you to write somethingabout him too. You’re not sure he even gets the concept of fanfics in the firstplace, but he insists he does. He wants to see how you’d describe him if hewere a character from a novel !
You both share a passion for conveyingemotions to audiences through art, and it links you deeper than you’d thought. It’s like you understand each other more easily, and he’s incredibly glad hegot to meet someone like you.
Adonis :
He’d love to check out your fanficswhenever you update them… but he sucks at using computers. He even struggles toopen a web browser, and yet his only bookmark is your AO3 account.
Really, he’s interested in what youwrite ! The whole computer thing is pretty off-putting to him, though. Readingon a computer screen gives him headaches and hurts his eyes, but he diligentlygoes through it all to read what you write.
He never really understood muchabout literature, but he’s humbled whenever he reads your fics. To think thatyou wrote an entire story by yourself about those characters that already exist…To him, it’s proof of your dedication and love for the source material.
He likes to stay with you as youwrite, quietly doing something else so as to not disturb you. That way, he cansneak glances at your focused face from time to time. He feels it’s incredibly mysterious to seeyou in the process of creating something.
All in all, he’s happy you’re happy doingwhat you love ! It never fails to make him smile whenever you mention anythingabout writing, and he hopes you can keep being happy forever.
Eichi :
He was intrigued when he learned youlike to write. To him, artistic people are fascinating. So he got a little bit moreinto you after finding out about this.
He’s never heard about fanfictionsbefore, and while he doesn’t really get the concept, the thought that you’dwrite about your beloved characters is endearing to him. It just shows you’rereally passionate about them !
He likes that you have the drive todive head-first into your hobby and publish your writings for others to enjoy. He’s an entertainer himself, so he definitely gets that feeling !
He’s pretty curious about yourwriting style, and he feels he can understand you better by reading what youwrite. To him, it’s like he just opened a door to your heart and is peekinginside.
He compliments you so much it’sstarting to puzzle you. He feels any entertainer needs support from a warmaudience to keep doing what they love, so it’s his own way to support you !

The Useless Elements of Your Blog You Should Remove
Tumblr media
“Look at how awesome my website is!!”
“There’s a slider, a Facebook box, 2 popups, 4 ads, all of these cool flashing buttons, a picture of my dog ‘Rex’ (my inspiration) and it’s probably the best site that ever existed. Seriously.”
Sounds crazy, right? Well, that’s the reality of many bloggers trying to succeed.
There’s nothing to be ashamed of here.
When learning to build a website or a blog these are fun items to play with, learn about and implement as you work toward becoming more knowledgeable and taking your online presence to the next level.
You have to get right into the thick of things, get your hands messy and then dial back as you discover what works for you.
But what do the experts say? How about...

What’s the difference?
Purpose and function are the main keys the successful bloggers and website owners want. They design a website with a goal in mind; a purpose it has to serve.
A lot of people out there are too lost in the “bit and pieces” of their design and find themselves forgetting about the real reason they started their website in the first place (whatever that may be) – until they check their stats and get frustrated because nothing is happening.
There’s the problem, it’s your first obstacle and it’s time to overcome it – you’re focusing on the wrong areas.
The next step is to shed the “bells and whistles” mentality, find out what you want your website to do for you and work towards ‘design’, instead of art or craft.
After all, design is about function.
Your website needs to fulfill a few goals, here’s a few suggestions:
Convert to sale – make money
Convert to a subscriber – so you can get repeat traffic from them
Get your reader to Share your website/page – to reach more people.
The above may not be your goals exactly, but they represent what most people’s websites are trying to achieve. You need people to be on your site in order to make a sale or fulfill your ultimate goal. Also, the more people you get to your website the easier it will be to fulfill that goal.
This is what your website ‘design’ can do for you. So you’ve got to start getting rid of things that make that difficult to happen.
So naturally, I created a list here of things you should consider removing. It’s essentially about behavior that certain elements encourage, but tailor it to your individual needs, these aren’t gospel.
Remove anything unnecessary that takes your visitors off-site
Tumblr media
It’s a simple concept, you’ve got people on your website, so don’t encourage them to leave.
You think you don’t but really, most of you do without realizing it!
Take a look at your theme or layout, really think about each element and ask “where does it take my visitors?”.  Do they stay on your site or exit from somewhere else?
Here’s a few examples:
Social Media Widgets – A lot of these widgets just take people off-site and slow down your loading time, creating a big barrier between your visitor and conversion.
I’ve always held the opinion that Social Media should be used to drive people to your website – as it’s not as powerful a ‘repeat traffic’ tool as an email list.
Get people subscribing to your email list instead. It will lead to repeat visits to your site if implemented correctly.
Add a few small links to you social media profiles somewhere else on the page where they don’t distract.
Under-performing Advertisements – Making $30 a month with your Adsense ads?  Got some affiliate banners in your sidebar? If you track them and they make hardly anything you should consider removing them.
Sell with your words instead, through quality education and value. Ads that don’t perform just add to the load, clutter up your page and distract people from your main call to action.
Link Exchanges – Having a list of 15 websites you exchanged links with in your sidebar or footer isn’t exactly a powerful SEO or traffic technique and they just send people to other websites.
Instead, allow people to contribute posts to your website with a bit of info and a link, so people will get a sample of their work and want to check out their website.  Make sure the links open in a new window! But by having them write something on your website they will share it with their audience and drive more people to your blog!
Don’t encourage people to leave, keep them on-site.
YouTube does this effectively. They reward videos that keep people on the platform. Facebook, Twitter, all of these places make more money when you’re using their platform. So they do what they can to keep you there. You should do the same!
Remove less relevant pages from your navigation
Tumblr media
Listing 14 pages on your design is an excellent strategy to get people look elsewhere.
If you give people too many options they will be intimidated.
Simplify by grouping under pages that cover several pages, linking out from there or even just add some of the less relevant pages to the footer of your website.
You can slim down your navigation by switching to custom menu.  Just go to Appearance -> Menus.
Tumblr media
Either alter the existing menu or add a new one by going to ‘create a new menu’.
Tumblr media
Then add the pages you want to menu!
Tumblr media
Then simply change your main nav to that menu, this will depend on your Theme’s settings, but you may find it changes by default anyway.  Another alternative is to use the plugin ‘Hide pages’
Remove elements that keep your content from being “above the fold”
First of all, what is “Above the fold”? It’s anything that shows up above the bottom section of the browser window, see below:
Tumblr media
But quite often people see this “opportunity” as a chance cram a bunch of other things up there because they want their ‘extras’ to convert more than they care about their visitors seeing the content they’re looking for.
Give first, receive second.
You need to give people what they’re searching for and then offer the call to action.  The best way to serve up the content on a silver platter is to have it above the fold, taking up the majority of the space. There are a few things you should consider keeping like your logo, navigation and maybe a subscription feature box on your home page (as most people go to this page after reading your content).
But you need to remove the useless stuff – slideshows, too many ads, headers that are too tall and push the content back below the fold and put the content on the front line.
But what about pop ups?
They show up above the fold and in front of your content! Make sure they don’t pop up until someone has been on your page for a certain period of time or get a popup that is designed to show up when someone is about to leave.  But before you even think about that, is it for an email subscription?  That’s OK, anything else I’d seriously question and weigh up.
If you want to use popups, run some test firsts and see if they actually improve conversion or harm it.
Remove anything that distracts from your Call to Action…
Tumblr media
…minus your content of course.
So you’ve set up your website with your logo, navigation, content and you’ve sprinkled a few calls to action around including your email subscription box, some share buttons and a link to your product.
You think “why stop there?”
You start adding links to your other content, cool widgets you’ve found, a tag cloud, links, categories, recent comments and blah blah blah.
Now what? You’ve got an overcluttered design and people don’t know where to go next!
If you’ve got an overcluttered design and people don’t know what to do! Chances are, if they read your content, they’ll bounce afterward or leave because there’s no clear direction and it’s just plain confusing.
Or maybe they’ll leave without reading your words at all!
Also beware of being too aggressive with your call to action, 1 or two in a sidebar, below your content, one or two other places are about as many spots as you want to fill. Being overly aggressive will put people on the back foot.
Choose your design elements wisely. Make your main call to actions the second most outstanding element after your content.
Ultimately, focus on 3 things
Tumblr media
I’ve covered them before in the secret of an awesome website design, they are:
1. Give the people what they want – the content.
2. The purpose of your site – the call to action.
3. Making people familiar with who you are – make it share-able and have unique branding.
This doesn’t mean you have to follow what everyone else is doing. Allow yourself to break away from the mold.
Simplify.  Make things clear and concise.
James Clear removed his whole sidebar and noticed improved engagement and better results. Because people landed and all they saw was the content they were looking for.
It’s going to that way no mobile anyway, and that will most likely be more than half of your visitors!
You can think just like this and create a website that gives people what they want and they’ll dig for more – this leads to conversions.
Your website is just the middle man between you and your visitors – you’re giving them content, possibly some products or some kind of value in exchange for an email address or money.
There doesn’t need to be all the bells and whistles.
Follow this thought pattern with your website layout and you can forget about the ‘stuff’ and focus on the more important elements- what you offer.
Try it out and leave a comment here to tell me how you went!

I started to detect correlations in between the children that showed these behaviors, and also decided to start chronicling. Designing the Perfect Podcast
Years ago, if you wanted to get on the air, all you needed was a little technical know-how to create your own radio station, and you can still do it. But podcasts are today’s radio. There are plenty of technical recommendations for recording your own podcast, but if you have an idea for a podcast and want to learn how some of the best of the best design podcasts got started—and how their hosts work—then you came to the right place.
Podcast Pioneer
When you hear the word podcast, you might think iPod, and rightly so. Ben Hammersley is often credited with originating the term podcast, a blending of iPod and broadcast. The early iPod allowed you to store downloaded audio files, and by 2005 iTunes fully supported the medium—available for free through the iTunes Store. Today, podcasts are not just limited to the iPod or iTunes. You can get them through Google Play, Spotify, Overcast, and other platforms. One of the earliest design podcasts was Debbie Millman’s Design Matters, but even before podcasting, Millman hosted it as a Voice America internet radio show, recorded live, and available to listen to later.
But everything changed when Millman’s friend Bryony Gomez-Palacio suggested Millman get on iTunes. But why podcasts, especially when the radio thing seemed to be working for Millman? Gomez-Palacio said, “It was a moment when Apple was transitioning from a nerd brand to a coveted consumer brand and the only one creating a platform that could reach more people—a key factor in my suggestion because I truly believed Debbie needed to be heard by a broader audience.” And she has reached a broader audience, now known as the Barbara Walters of the design world. While she is flattered by the comparison, if there’s anybody she has learned from and looked up to, it’s Terry Gross. Millman says Gross has “a lot of range” able to speak with anybody about anything, and it’s something that Millman also strives for.
From left, Matthew Carter and Design Matters host Debbie Millman, courtesy of Design Matters.
Research plays a big role in making that happen, and Millman calls it “one of the differentiating factors” that separates Design Matters from other podcasts. Listening to Design Matters herself, Gomez-Palacio always finds it amusing when Millman surprises guests because she knows something that they either forgot or haven’t spoken about in a while. She believes that Millman’s research and approach makes Design Matters stand out. “She does not go for the cookie-cutter question, or the expected question, she really focuses on finding something new that each particular guest can reveal that has not been covered before.”
Finding Your Voice
While Debbie Millman and Design Matters took off, another early design podcast was finding its footing: Be A Design Cast, launched in November 2005, concluding in February 2008. It grew out of the Be A Design Group blog and was sometimes shortened from Be A Design Cast to BADCast. Tom Nemitz and Nate Voss co-hosted BADCast, and Donovan Beery came on board—the three were also authors on the blog. Beery & Voss moved on to create 36 Point, a blog where The Reflex Blue Show podcast has lived since 2008. According to podcast veteran Beery, between BADCast and The Reflex Blue Show he has hosted “somewhere over 280 different guests.” Among those guests, regulars will come on, including Steve Gordon, Justin Ehrens, and Von Glitchka.

Having done podcasting for so long, if there’s one thing that Beery is thankful for, it’s the learning opportunities. “Hosting a podcast has been the most educational thing I have done for my career—the opportunity to speak with guests and ask questions really is a learning experience.” Having been a guest on The Reflex Blue Show myself, I’ll admit, the experience is a lot of fun, especially because the recordings are done in person, sitting down and hanging out. Doing the recordings over Skype or Google Hangout—while it could open up his guest list—didn’t go the way Beery wanted. “I was doing about one Skype show a year, then I said that’s it, I want to do all of them in-person.” With a microphone in front of you and audio software capturing the moment, it can feel a bit intimidating, but the informal chat is the most rewarding part of the experience—especially in this all-digital, heads down & screens up world we live in.
Beery records his podcasts face-to-face but without an audience, whereas Millman is face-to-face with her guests in front of a studio audience. Millman says that having the audience there can provide input and energy, and it’s something that the host and/or guest can feed off of. But for Beery, who lacks the live audience, having the intimacy of just the host and guest—or guests—makes for what he calls “a water cooler show.” The recording sessions, casual conversation, all of it, it’s become Beery’s style. “When we started, we didn’t know of any other podcasts, so we just did what we thought would be fun. When I did finally listen to Design Matters, I realized what a full hour—a very smart show—sounded like. But that wasn’t really us, or me. I knew copying another format would always sound like a cheap knockoff. I’ve had a number of people ask for advice on starting a podcast over the years, and I always say you have to entertain yourself first, or you won’t get past a few episodes.” Millman shared a similar opinion, especially when it comes to longevity, “You need to be in it for the long haul to develop an audience.” For those starting out, she suggests doing 10 episodes to develop momentum. How much farther you take it is entirely up to you?
Strength in Numbers
Because they’ve been around for so long, Millman and Beery have proven that they’re in it for the long haul, and a new crop of podcasts are hoping they’ll have staying power too. Experts in the design and tech fields, Lea Alcantara & Emily Lewis fell into podcasting, in a way. As an ExpressionEngine expert, Alcantara was asked to be on the EE Podcast—part of 5by5, a “fledgling podcast network” according to Alcantara. When one of the EE Podcast hosts left, Alcantara came on board and because she was familiar with Lewis’ work and expertise, she asked Lewis to join her. Their CTRL+CLICK CAST grew out of that early experience, and has evolved over time, according to Alcantara. “We wanted to talk about the greater web and not have it so focused on one product, so we rebranded to CTRL+CLICK CAST over time. When you CTRL or Control+Click on your browser, you get a dropdown modal with features to allow you to inspect how the site is built. Hence our slogan, We inspect the web for you.” (Full disclosure: I was a CTRL+CLICK CAST guest myself.) But their show isn’t always about just design. CTRL+CLICK CAST seeks out guests “who represent the full spectrum” of the design and technology industries, and according to Lewis, “We are also trying to tackle topics that go beyond tech, into how tech and culture intersect—diversity and access challenges, pay inequality, ethics.”
CTRL+CLICK CAST co-hosts, from left, Emily Lewis and Lea Alcantara.
What advice would they give to somebody starting out, doing a podcast for the first time? Lewis says you need to care about it “because 99% of the time, it won’t make you money or make you famous. So if you want a sustainable podcast, your passion is likely what is going to sustain it.” Lewis also insists that you need to know the logistics and tech—hardware and software—to save yourself time and money. (Check out their PODCASTING 101 episode for tips.) Alcantara sums it up, “Pay someone to edit your show and offer transcripts (for SEO and accessibility!)”
Like CTRL+CLICK CAST, the Clever podcast is hosted by a dynamic duo, Jaime Derringer and Amy Devers. “We started the podcast with a passionate drive to celebrate designers, and offer a window into the humanity behind the design, celebrating humanity and while expanding cultural awareness,” said Devers, but they won’t host any guest. “In some ways, they have to be creative, and have a good story.” And after one look at their guest list, it’s clear that all of their guests are creative and awesome—including Terry Crews, who knows a lot about art and design.
Clever podcast co-hosts, from left Amy Devers and Jaime Derringer, courtesy of Clever.
Unlike Millman and Beery, who both record face-to-face with their guests present, both CTRL+CLICK CAST and Clever are recorded remotely. “Skype gives us the chance to reach big names,” said Devers, “and Skype opens up the world, in terms of who we can talk to.” But those calls can pose technical problems. “If a guest doesn’t wear headphones during the interview and listens to the conference call via speakers, then the guest’s mic picks up our voices and relays it back to us and we get feedback on the recording. We have gotten super good at preparing our guests in advance so that they absolutely have to have headphones or earbuds on for the call. Also, there is this weird cousin called Skype for Business which doesn’t seem to work with regular Skype. This has caused confusion particularly with international corporate guests. We’ve learned to steer around that one now too.” Derringer, who has more experience with editing in Audio Hijack, listens to the audio, offers feedback, and with Devers, will approve the final cut. “Sometimes I catch things that Amy doesn’t and vice versa, so it’s nice to have a second set of ears listening.” Once they complete what they call their own “light editing” they outsource it to an engineer who creates the final audio master.
Making It Sustainable
Having a podcast co-host goes a long way, especially when you need feedback on tricky matters like audio quality and interview pacing, or deciding on a guest or a number of guests. Jason Alejandro, who co-hosts the Dissection podcast with Christopher Holewski, finds working with Holewski to be rewarding, especially since they push each other. “We collaborate closely on it, and that kind of collaboration requires a lot of listening, getting excited about nerdy design things, and bouncing ideas off of each other. So whether I am sending him links, replying to emails, recording an interview, or editing an episode, we try to share responsibility of the overall direction and production of the show. I think I have also helped recommend some designers/artists that he might not have normally considered just because we’re both influenced by very different things.”
From left, Christopher Holewski and Jason Alejandro, Dissection co-hosts, courtesy of Dissection.
Hearing the two talk about their show, guests, and format, it might sound like Siskel & Ebert, a.k.a. Siskel & Ebert & the Movies. The two film critics Gene Siskel & Roger Ebert discussed movies, and would disagree. If there’s one thing Alejandro and Holewski agree on, it’s that they disagree—frequently. Which is why Alejandro probably compares their show, and their relationship as podcasters, to the two grumpy men in the Muppets, a.k.a. Statler & Waldorf.
Employed by JK Design, their podcast is actually done on the side, but since it’s part of JK Design, it’s more of an extracurricular according to Alejandro. “We get to do it on company time, as part of our responsibilities. Our day-to-day is doing work for clients.” Although some podcasts like Dissection function under the roof of an existing business, plenty of others stand alone, and thanks to crowdfunding, you can now raise money to get your own podcast off the ground, or if you’ve already proven you have an audience, crowdfunding can help sustain it. Debbie Millman has partnered with Drip, and listeners and fans can support Design Matters through contributions. Out of the Fridge, a podcast about comic books and pop culture, has also found crowdfunding helpful. Out of the Fridge’s Alison Poppy, who manages a comic book store in Washington state and co-hosts the podcast, values all of their Patreon supporters. “They have been paying for our private studio and insurance. It’s been awesome that they have given us the opportunity for that!” But there’s another bonus, and it goes beyond having consistent revenue. Poppy said those contributions also give them direct interaction with their listeners. And that is extremely important since each and every one of us now experience so many varied touchpoints from so many varied brands.
That One Thing
Sometimes sustainability has a lot to do with always being curious and exploring, no matter what the subjects are. Poppy, as well as her Out of the Fridge co-hosts Kelly Okler and Andrew Chard, have a range of interests, and in turn, have created other avenues to share their thoughts about pop culture. “With Pages for All Ages, we wanted to create a resource for parents, teachers, and librarians to find new books for kids, but also a show that kids can listen to as well. With Twice Bitten, Kelly and I are huge fans of horror and we wanted to create a place where we can openly talk about everything in the horror genre.” No matter what show they’re working on, when it comes to what they do and why they do it, there’s one constant, says Polly, “We want them to be different and special, and just take our time to make something we enjoy.” Good advice for any podcaster—veteran or newbie, or someplace in between.

9 Tips That Will Bring Forth the Productivity Genius
Experts try to figure out new ways business owners can get things done quickly and efficiently. However, there are several ways to stay productive that don’t take a lot of time but can certainly help your business succeed in the long run. The following tips should create explosive productivity, so you get big things accomplished (and make your life and business matter).
For starters, if you’d rather wait to do the most difficult tasks at the end of the day think again. Fast Company mentions that tackling the most pressing and challenging tasks first thing in the morning can relieve stress and help you feel accomplished. If you feel like you’ve already conquered the world then hopefully you’ll be just as productive on other tasks throughout the day.
Career strategist Adunola Adeshola kicks off her day by identifying her top one or two most pressing tasks. “Once I’ve scratched the most important thing off my to-do list, I immediately feel like I’ve conquered the day,” she says. “Sure, some days there are five to seven important things,” she admits, but starting by tackling something critical “helps me eliminate busy work and distractions so that I can end the day feeling accomplished.”
Fast Company also recommends reading, because it’s impossible not to benefit from reading a favorite book, especially one that can help you build your business. Who knows, some self-help books can also recommend ways to be more productive, which is never a bad thing to learn more about.
“When I am feeling stuck or overwhelmed, I often turn to a book I’ve read before, reminding myself of what it taught me and internalizing its lessons further,” says Jason Shen, founder of the talent assessment platform Headlight. Shen finds this habit helps him hone his long-term memory and practice the art of thinking deeply. “Instead of getting a quick hit on Twitter, try to extract more wisdom out of something you know is high-quality,” he suggests.
Managing your emails is also vital while trying to remain productive because it’s easy to get sidetracked and responding to a bunch of emails when you’re supposed to be finishing up a job or getting started on the next project. Check out what The Muse recommends as some of the best ways to keep track of emails without them taking over your day.
Only check email at specific times during the day, and try to limit it to only 4-5 times a day. If you don’t have nearly this much self control, use a tool like Inbox Pause to keep emails from showing up in your inbox until you’re ready for them.
If email’s really getting you down, try Time Management Ninja’s system for only checking it twice a day.
Need to answer emails in a hurry? Add the perfunctory “Sent from my iPhone” signature at the bottom of the page—even if you’re emailing from your computer. While you shouldn’t do this all the time, it’s a quick way to bang out some one-sentence replies without people thinking you’re being rude.
Approach your emails in terms of how long it will take you to reply to them. If it will take less than three minutes to answer, just get it done now. If it will take more than that, set it aside. And then, when you have a large chunk of time, tackle those first.
Distractions are another major time buster that you don’t have time for when you’re trying to get a job done. Instead of getting distracted by other people in your company or getting caught up on social media, here are a few ways to eliminate distractions according to TheMuse.
“I turn off my computer and leave my phone in odd places that prevent me from immediately finding it. That ensures I’m disconnected and fully present. And the truth is that I know that my brain needs a break, otherwise my business will suffer.” Christie Mims, @revolutionsclub
Need a quick fix to keep your co-workers from distracting you? Pop in your headphones. It’s not fool-proof, but people are much less likely to approach you with a non-urgent question or gossip if you look plugged in and on-task.
When you stumble upon interesting articles, don’t let reading them now get in the way of your productivity. Instead, use a service like Pocket or Instapaper to save them to read later when you have more time (like maybe on your commute).
Inc. adds to TheMuse’s thoughts on distractions by mentioning that it’s vital not to let your phone or social media distract you. It may be tempting to check it throughout the day, but perhaps it’s better to set aside some time when you have a lunch break as opposed to picking it up every fifteen minutes when a message comes through.
While completely shutting down your smartphone isn’t always practical, managing your notifications is. Frequent pop-ups are distracting and almost guaranteed to pull your attention away from the task at hand. When you need to complete detail-oriented work, shut noncritical notifications off so you can focus with greater ease.
Just like you shouldn’t get distracted by people or articles, for example, another distraction or time buster that may pop up, is your calendar. Yes, a calendar is a great way to stay organized and show people when you’re available, but it can also start to control your life, especially if you’re not staying on top of the calendar or not allowing yourself to get all of your jobs done on time. Let’s see what Inc. has to say about that.
While working in an environment where everyone can view your Google or Outlook calendar can be convenient, it can also set you up for problems if you don’t take control of your time. Others may view empty spaces as opportunities to schedule meetings, even if you intended to use the time for other tasks. Instead of leaving your calendar in the hands of others, block out the time you need to handle critical tasks. That way you won’t be derailed by an unexpected meeting request.
Do you have a planner or somewhere you can keep track of which tasks you need to accomplish on any given day? If you don’t, you should consider figuring out a way to stay organized and not forget any deadlines or projects that are due that day. Forbes has critical advice on this.
The best solution for being productive and alleviating stress is to make a list of things that need to be completed each day. If it is a big project, be sure to break the deliverables down into manageable pieces. It also might make sense to complete a few of the easy things early to feel more accomplished. Another solution is to keep a calendar and backfill the tasks from today until the project is actually due, filling in a timeline of when each step should be completed so that the final piece is completed on-time. Remember is always best to underpromise and overdeliver. – Kathleen Houlihan, Dream2Career
Forbes also recommends spending only limited time on each project, that way everything gets done on time.
Instead of only tackling your biggest project, set a timer and work on it for an hour. Turn off all distractions. Then, take a break and transition to another project. Set that same timer for 60 minutes and take another break. If 60 minutes is too long for you, then cut it to 30 or 40 minutes. The point is that you will make progress on every project, reduce stress and feel productive. – Meghan Godorov, Meghan Godorov Consulting, LLC
This tip you may not have thought about, but Robin Sharma says it’s not only essential to implement work productivity but remember to take care of yourself by incorporating exercise and other ways you can get away and destress after a long day at work.
Workout 2X a day. This is just one of the little-known productivity tactics that I’ll walk you through in my new online training program YOUR PRODUCTIVITY UNLEASHED (details at the end of this post) but here’s the key: exercise is one of the greatest productivity tools in the world. So do 20 minutes first thing in the morning and then another workout around 6 or 7 pm to set you up for wow in the evening.
Drink more water. When you’re dehydrated, you’ll have far less energy. And get less done.
Work in 90 minute blocks with 10 minute intervals to recover and refuel (another game-changing move I personally use to do my best work).
Here’s another productivity idea that could save you tons of time, not to mention your computer should hopefully run a lot faster since you’ll be shutting down tabs more frequently as opposed to having a gazillion up. It’s a lot easier to get distracted when there are so many tabs up, at least that’s what Make Use Of says.
Despite their convenience, browser tabs also cause distractions. Having too many open at once slows you down while you’re looking for the one you need. Unneeded browser tabs pull your attention away from what you need to do as well.
Look at all the tabs across the top of your browser, and close tabs you don’t need. In other words, close the ones that disrupt your workflow more than helping it.
Browsers have menu features for accessing recently closed tabs. You can return to the content by going to the history section, too. It’s time to stop cluttering up the top of your browser with too many tabs.
