Writing prompt: Biting?
I'm a very rational person - or, I was. I still am, I think. If you'd asked me a week ago if I believed in the supernatural, I'd have laughed at you all the way home. Naturally, it's a bit awkward now as I am, laying in my bed, shuddering and barely able to move.
It's good shuddering, great really. Amazing, even. I met this woman at the local coffee shop. I didn't even know people met there organically anymore. But with all the practice in the world, she pulled me in with her eyes, staring from across the room. Who just openly stares like that? But, I guess it worked.
I thought she was walking over to me at some point, but before I even realized I was sitting at her table. She talked my ear off like we'd been friends for years. I mean, I was glad to make a new friend. She all but invited herself back to my place, but, I mean, I didn't mind. To friends, right?
Or something more. People always say 'it just happened' about one night stands. But how did it lead up to that? My memory's a blur now. I don't know the actions that led to it. Her eyes. Those damn eyes.
Not that I was especially put out or anything. She knew how to make me feel good, and she delighted in it. It even felt so good when she bit me that my vision went white. I'd never experimented with it before, but it seemed like it came natural to her. So, naturally, I let her take charge.
Over time, she would leave little love bites all around my entire body, my skin her canvas. I lost time more and more often. I'd pass out with her body around mine and wake back up as she was still going. One time I woke up in another bed. Hers, I think? I would have been more worried, but she reassured me, and bit me again. And she wouldn't have been so comfortable doing that if she wasn't in control of the situation. Right?
It's unrealistic to think there's anything larger at play here. It's silly to think that she might have any sort of power over me, to keep me here and willing.
But the more I think about it, I had... obligations. And other wants, that weren't her. I had a life. But these days, all I am, is...
I won't say what I think she is. It's not like she is one, or anything. She's just, an especially charismatic person. Anyone would feel naturally drawn to her. She just happened to choose me. And the thought gives me butterflies in my stomach, and pangs of arousal everywhere else.
What's the difference between having powers, and just having that raw, magnetic, sexual energy? Charisma and presence? Persuasion? I guess it doesn't really make a difference. It doesn't matter what she is. I need to feel her teeth on my skin again, I need to lose myself more. For her, I'll call her anything she wants me to. For her, I'll be anything she wants me to be.
I hope she comes back again soon.
#hypnosis#short prompt#I tried to sleep over two hours ago and it didn't work! :)#so I wrote instead#but forgive me if the tense is weird or it reads awkwardly#I'm just very tired#biting#I am trying to write these in a way that is easily translatable to tweets#there are still tiny differences in words and positioning when I post these on Twitter though so Tumblr remains the best place to read them#I started doing this to drum up more activity and force myself to write#and also because I was close to 1k followers on Twitter!#but as it stands most of the content I post is actually on here so OTL#go follow my twitter at ArihiWrites!#thank you for the prompt!

I Published My NaNo-Novel: How 50,000 Words Boosted “Bear Boy”
The path to publishing a novel isn’t always easy. Today, Justin Barker, author of the novel Bear Boy, offers some insight on making difficult decisions, both in writing and in life:
“You have 12 hours to live.” A drum starts to beat like a heart and quickens. “What would you say?” my yoga instructor asks, “Who would you want to see? What are your regrets?” It was day 40 of a yoga retreat, and tears streamed down my face as I scribbled my thoughts, but there was one I couldn't get off my mind. It was a regret: that I had never helped another zoo animal. I had spent much of my teen years speaking out against captivity, fighting to free Brutus and Ursula, two bears living in abysmal conditions in a cage near my home, and I had succeeded against all odds. That felt good, but I was an adult now with an adult’s awareness and power. And I had done nothing else.
I walked away from that imagined glimpse of death more alive than ever and burning to tell my story. I had no idea what I was doing, but I started writing and struggling—not knowing what to write, not being able to stay motivated. Four years in, with my first draft in the trash, I discovered NaNoWriMo. I signed up for the 50,000 word challenge. I booked a cheap flight to Chiang Mai, Thailand, where I would create my own writing retreat. I hopped from one wifi hotspot to the next—fueled by tropical views, delicious vegan food, and an ambitious daily word count.
When that 2015 Nanowrimo wrapped up I felt like I had accomplished something. I felt 50,000 words closer to my dream of telling my story, but little did I know, at the time, I was still six years from publishing my book. NaNoWriMo helped me lay out the facts of my story and capture key moments of dialogue. It gave me purpose and courage and forced me to take action—all critical elements for any writer. But to be publishable, my writing and my storytelling needed some serious help.
Luckily, I met Jennie Nash, who became my book coach. She guided me through a process to define my mission—I wanted young readers to walk away inspired to stand up for themselves and for animals. She helped me build the structure of my story, offered me guidance and accountability as I moved from having a bunch of words on a page to having a compelling story someone might actually want to read. She helped me realize my story wasn’t just about saving two bears, it was also about saving myself—how as a queer teen I struggled with the confines of gender norms, suffered taunts and physical attacks, and how those experiences helped me empathize with animals locked in cages far from their natural homes. That was the real story.
“When that 2015 Nanowrimo wrapped up I felt like I had accomplished something. I felt 50,000 words closer to my dream of telling my story.”
I had a dream of a traditional publishing deal. I thought it would be an excellent platform to continue the conversation about the horrors of captivity that I started when I was young. Jennie helped me build my pitch to agents: “Bear Boy is for today’s idealists, outsiders, rule breakers, go-getters, and activists. My ideal reader is 12 years old, the same age I was when I started my activism.” After over 100 pitches, I landed a New York City agent. I was ecstatic and she was ready to slice and dice my manuscript. “We need to completely eliminate the gay part of your story” she said. It was a punch to the gut, but I thought maybe she knew what she was doing so I did it. She pitched my reworked manuscript to all the major book imprints. A year passed without a deal and she said my lack of a social following was to blame and that I should write a controversial piece about Greta Thunberg to get some media attention. My heart sank. How could I possibly say anything bad about Greta? I saw myself in her young activism and was deeply inspired by the movement she was building.
That’s when I decided that I no longer wanted an agent or a traditional deal. I was scared, I knew nothing about how to bring a book into the world, but I decided to press on, establish a book imprint and bring my book to life on my own terms. I hired professional copywriters, proofreaders, interior and cover designers. I did a lot of research. I had really tough days, both technically and emotionally. There were many moments that I wondered if I made the right decision, but I am on the other side of all of that doubt now. It took 10 years but Bear Boy: The True Story of a Boy, Two Bears, and the Fight to Be Free is here, in the hands of early readers. Young people from all corners of the globe are reading and reviewing the book, saying it’s inspiring them and that it’s making them rethink their relationship to nature and animals.
It’s Pride month and I’m proud to be able to tell a queer story. And, I have to acknowledge the privilege I hold as a white cisgendered male with the financial resources, flexibility, and support to go out on my own. I believe anyone can write and power through the challenges to get their story into the world, but we must all work together to challenge and reimagine the systems in both indie and traditional publishing that limit access and continue to marginalize so many important voices and stories.
Justin Barker is an animal activist, producer, and author of Bear Boy: The True Story of a Boy, Two Bears, and the Fight to Be Free. With his YA debut, Justin hopes to highlight the plight of zoo animals and inspire young people to stand up for themselves, animals, and their fellow humans. He lives in San Francisco with his son Noah and wife Bridget; he and Bridget both identify as queer.

Writing Characters With Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD)
Hi everyone! :) How are you doing? 🥰💕 Today I'll be outlining the main do's and don't's of writing characters with SAD, as well the definition and the main symptoms of SAD.
DISCLAIMER: I am not diagnosed with SAD myself; however, all of the following information had been obtained from different posts and sites of people that have first-hand experience with SAD. I will be linking those at the end of today's post, please feel free to check them out.
What I learned from the intense research I did is that nobody has social anxiety the same. Some people feel like they can't breath. Others tend to laugh in awkward moments. Nobody is the same. No character is exactly alike. You can't get it "right," because it's not an exact science. So don't feel too pressured while writing a character with SAD, there's no "one" way to write them. A helpful approach is to think what about how the SAD fits into the story you want to tell because the topic is really as complicated as any other and you can view it from many different angles and go as deep as you want - depending on what this story you're trying to tell calls for. So rather than trying to get an objective view of this complicated topic, focus on the aspects that are relevant to the story.
What is Social Anxiety Disorder?
AKA Social Phobia, SAD describes an intense fear and avoidance of negative public scrutiny, public embarrassment, humiliation or social interaction. This fear can be specified to particular social situations; such as public speaking, or more typically, is experienced in most/all social interactions. Those suffering from SAD will often attempt to avoid the source of their anxiety; this is particularly problematic and in severe cases can lead to complete social isolation.
Symptoms of SAD:
person paces a lot
very fidgety
stops talking mid sentence...a lot
wrings hands
angered by slightest infractions of others
finds fault in others a lot
hard to breathe when focus/attention is shifted to them
sweating profusely
mumbling
shrinking to hide
lack of eye contact/wandering eyes
painfully shy and withdrawn
picking the nails, picking the skin
always the person in the back of the room or in a corner
gravitating toward the first person they recognise and following them everywhere
headaches
finding ways to avoid certain situations
crying before or after social events
feel dizzy and the entire world becomes very far away
feeling like chest was caving in
assuming that everyone is focusing on them
assuming that people are laughing about them
grind their teeth a lot
bite their knuckles
tap out drum patterns with their feet or fingers
nausea and vomiting
muscle weakness
migraines
heart arrhythmia
increasing nervous tics
Keep in mind that social anxiety exists on a spectrum. Not everyone is paralysed at the smallest conversation, but some are. Others feel mild discomfort at certain types of socialising. It’s all relative.
DO'S:
DO write in a lot of internal dialogue. People with SAD say that most of their anxiety is created by their own internal rumination. So, add a lot of overly self-critical internal dialogue and have them think about trivial things that they may or may not have gotten wrong for hours after the fact. People with SAD also tend to avoid initiating with anyone, instead preferring for them (the other person) to initiate — because then they know they're not inconveniencing them (the other person). If a person with SAD does have to interact with people then they tend to plan and rehearse what they're going to say to them. However, once the social interaction has begun, there will be very little internal monologue. In those situations, the character is very much relying on instinct. After the interaction, if the character feels that they messed up (which is likely; be sure to pick up on even the slightest fumbles or awkward pauses), they should keep thinking about how they're an idiot and they want to never have to talk to another person again, because they know it'll end the same way. If they feel like they did a good job, they should express surprise at how well it went, congratulate themselves, and say that they should maybe do this more often — although they probably won't.
DO let them have observational skills. Part of the anxiety stems from not always knowing how to/being good at socialising. Thus an anxious person will watch others closely for clues to their performance and acceptance. While it doesn’t always tell the person how they are doing, it does teach them a lot about the people around them and how they feel about each other. The person in a group with SAD may actually have a better idea of who in the group are friends, enemies, annoyed with the others, think they are better, have crushes, and so on. Having SAD doesn’t mean that a person doesn’t know social cues, it means that they underestimate their ability to use them. Don’t confuse SAD with autism.
DO make it influence all decisions. This is one you can do as the writer and not include every bit of internal dialogue. Just keep in mind that Every decision an anxious person makes is put through the anxiety filter first. Even if they are doing things by themselves, they have to evaluate the chances of meeting people, meeting people they know, having to talk to people when they are done. Keep that in mind when writing these characters in order to keep their personality consistent. That said, in general you can think of someone with SAD feeling physically, mentally and emotionally uncomfortable and "out of place" in ordinary social situations - they want out of it, looking for the door, excuse to leave, cut the interaction short. There could be a sense of shame, guilt and self-loathing about not being "good enough", or that there is something broken and wrong with them (or society).
DO give them other traits. Make sure you give them other traits that influence their decisions and drive their motivations. Someone can have anxiety and also love adventure, want to save all the stray dogs, want to help orphans, want to be a basketball hero, etc. One of the big problems with SAD is that it interferes with a person’s desires to do and be other things. It doesn’t always win though. And sometimes a person may decide that an awkward encounter or two is worth taking part in some other activity they love. Just remember to keep your characters balanced.
DO let them find each other. SAD is probably more common than you’d think. Not everyone has a crippling case. You can have characters share their anxiety with each other and comfort each other and help each other through tough times. SAD can make a person feel isolated but they don’t have to be, and often aren’t as isolated as they think. That observational skill can also help them find the right people to share their feelings with. Not all socialising is terrifying, it can often be cathartic.
DON'T'S:
DON'T make them hate people. Social anxiety does not mean that the person afflicted doesn’t like people or always craves solitude. One of the harshest aspects of SAD is that a person may want companionship and friends but still have uncontrollable discomfort when faced with making friends or spending time with the friends they already have. This constant tug-of-war between wanting friends and feeling the anxiety around people can cause a lot of internal pain and lead to other emotions and conditions such as depression. Someone with SAD can have friends. Even a lot of friends. But certain factors may influence how a person with SAD chooses friends more than they influence others. The level of contact is different for everyone and there will be some friends who can take up more time while not taking up more energy on the part of the anxious person. However, SAD can get so bad that the person with it is unable to leave the house for days at a time, ghosting on all social engagements, not answering their phone and ignoring all texts; but that still doesn't mean they hate people.
DON'T always make them succeed. If you are writing about a person with SAD and they are forced again and again to go outside their comfort zone, make them fail. Have them go to a meeting and then duck down a side corridor at the last minute and disappear. Have them talk to a person and then freeze up in the middle of a conversation, at a loss for words. The longer they go without knowing what to say the stronger the anxiety gets and the harder it is to think. Or have them execute the socialising brilliantly but then go into the bathroom and cry from the overwhelming sense of effort it took to look normal. And just because they have had a few successes doesn’t mean that they will start succeeding every time. Sometimes, the energy it takes, even when the interaction was a success, means that next time they are reluctant or too exhausted to do it again.
DON'T always give them "tells". Anxious people can be very good at hiding it. In the example above of the person who socialises brilliantly and then cries in the bathroom, no one knows how hard it was. They only saw the brilliant “performance.” Keep that in mind. Not all people uncomfortable with socialising are bumbling awkward goofballs. Sometimes they actually appear very cool and collected.
DON'T suddenly make their anxiety disappear when they're at the end of their character arc. This pisses me off, anxiety is a life-long condition. It cannot be "overcome" easily. However, the person with it can learn to live with it. They can visit a psychiatrist, get pills prescribed or change their lifestyle completely to fit around their SAD. A person with anxiety always thinks about their anxiety. Even when they are happily at home reading a book, sometimes they will think about an upcoming engagement, or wish they made friends like the characters in their book. Every time a person with SAD makes plans they have to run through a list of criteria before nailing anything down. Will they have time before and after to prep for and cool down from the experience? Is it something they have done before and feel comfortable doing? Can they back out at the last minute if they feel too overwhelmed that day? These are just a fraction of the things that go through an anxious person’s mind before committing to plans. Again, this isn’t an absolute, but for many people with SAD it is a defining characteristic of who they are. They don’t talk to a single person, even a spouse sometimes, or make a doctor’s appointment without the anxiety affecting how they feel, think, and behave. It is always there. Always.
That's it for today folks! I hope everyone has an absolutely fantastic day! 😊❤

HALESTORM: Behind-The-Scenes Footage From Making Of 'Back From The Dead' Video
HALESTORM has shared behind-the-scenes footage from the making of the official video for the band's new single, "Back From The Dead". The track is taken from the group's upcoming fifth full-length album, due in 2022. Directed by Dustin Haney (Noah Cyrus, Luke Combs) and produced by Revolution Pictures, the clip features frontwoman Lzzy Hale and the rest of the band in a morgue and cemetery somewhere between life and death.
Lzzy says: "'Back From The Dead' is about survival, not in a physical sense, even though I know we all have been touched by death especially these last few years. This song is personal and written from a mental health perspective. I wanted to give myself and the world a hard rock song we could shout out loud as the gates opened again. I was on the edge of this world getting completely lost in oblivion, but even though it was the harder of two choices, I didn't just let the darkness and depression in my mind dig me an early grave. I didn't just sit and let it take me. I've erased my name from my headstone, so save your prayers, I'm back! I hope this song, as I pass it on to you, reminds YOU of your strength individually and that you are not alone."
She continues: "The video was so much fun to film! Dustin Haney is an amazing director. Dustin and his team really helped bring my words to life and the video is one of the most cinematic pieces we've done in years! I hope this song, as I pass it on…reminds YOU of YOUR individual strength and that you are not Alone. Raise your horns!"
By breaking rules, bucking trends, and busting down doors, HALESTORM has surged through rock 'n' roll on a singular path without compromise or apology. Along the way, the Pennsylvania-bred and Nashville-based quartet — Lzzy Hale (vocals, guitar), Arejay Hale (drums), Joe Hottinger (guitar) and Josh Smith (bass) — has collected a Grammy Award, scored successive number ones at radio, garnered multiple gold and platinum certifications, and performed to sold out crowds on five continents.
Going against the grain again in 2021, the band weathered the flames of chaos in 2020 and returned stronger than ever with their most empowering and undeniable anthems to date.
"Throughout the pandemic, I was writing a lot of melancholic and hopeless songs about the ups and downs of the world," admits Lzzy. "I've been in this group longer than I haven't been in it. We've always had shows. Even when I was 13 years old, we had a couple of bowling alley gigs once a month. This was the first time I didn't know if we would ever play again. However, I started to use music in the same way I did as a teenager—to get myself through this situation that was plaguing us all. I sidestepped and said, 'Let's keep our heads up, get our attitude back, be a light in the dark for a second, and celebrate the fact we're surviving and there's hope for the future.' So, we started to write songs that were a reminder to ourselves of who we are and what we're capable of. That became the mission statement."
In a way, it's always been the mission statement…
Since roaring to life in 1998, HALESTORM has uplifted audiences with a combination of sonic ass-kicking, provocative songwriting, and unshakable hooks. The four-piece received a Grammy Award in the category of "Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance" for "Love Bites (So Do I)". The song also minted them as the first female-fronted band to hit #1 on the Active Rock radio charts. Thus far, their discography spans two gold albums "Halestorm" and "The Strange Case Of..." , a platinum single "I Miss The Misery", and two gold singles "Here's To Us" and "I Get Off". Between surpassing one billion cumulative streams worldwide, they've notched two consecutive Top 10 debuts on the Billboard Top 200 with "Into The Wild Life" (2015) and "Vicious" (2018). The latter represented a critical high watermark with Rolling Stone citing it as "a muscular, adventurous, and especially relevant rock record." In its wake, "Uncomfortable" emerged as their fourth #1 at rock radio and earned their second Grammy Award nomination, while Loudwire christened HALESTORM "Rock Artist Of The Decade" in 2019. Not to mention, they have supported everyone from HEAVEN & HELL and Alice Cooper to Joan Jett on the road.
Even as the world went dormant during 2020, Lzzy remained prolific. She lent her voice to collaborations with everyone from Dee Snider of TWISTED SISTER, IN THIS MOMENT, APOCALYPTICA, and Mark Morton of LAMB OF GOD to EVANESCENCE, Cory Marks, and Mongolian phenomenon THE HU. Additionally, she joined forces with a trio of legends — Corey Taylor of SLIPKNOT, Scott Ian of ANTHRAX and original SLAYER drummer Dave Lombardo — for the theme song to Netflix's "Thunder Force". Plus, the group contributed a cover of THE WHO's "Long Live Rock" to the documentary of the same name. Expanding her presence across television, she hosted the AXS TV "A Year In Music" series, joined the cast of Hit Parader's "No Cover" as a judge, provided the singing voice for Bella Thorne in the Prime Video hit "Paradise City" and launched her own show "Raise Your Horns" on Rolling Live. On the channel, she appeared in Mike Garson's David Bowie tribute with a performance of "Moonage Daydream" alongside Broadway star Lena Hall. She also participated in the platform's Ronnie James Dio tribute, supporting the Stand Up And Shout Cancer Fund.
At the same time, she remained a huge proponent of encouraging the dialogue around mental health. She participated in a Grammy Mental Health panel and empowered the next generation of rock musicians as the keynote speaker at the Little Kids Rock Modern Band Summit. She also made history as Gibson Guitars' first-ever female ambassador.
"I've learned a lot about myself through all of these different projects," she admits. "I said 'yes' to various adventures, and it made me a better artist."
Working out of her home studio in Nashville, Lzzy and the band channeled this renewed spirit into the music at the onset of 2021. Collaborating with Scott Stevens of THE EXIES, the musicians hit their stride and cooked up the single 'Back From The Dead'. Dramatic distortion and drums rumble as she screams, "I'm back from the dead!" HALESTORM come out swinging as punchy verses give way to a call-and-response chorus shocked to life with a searing solo and thunderous groove.
"We needed a reintroduction," she exclaims. "We needed something that simply said, 'Hey, we're back'. The live show is the time we feel as truly alive as we can be. When you walk out on stage with your guitar strapped on, your guys are next to you, and you have an audience looking at you, it's everything. We're celebrating the fact we're all back together again. Whatever it is that was trying to destroy that part of myself and my bandmates that our fans need couldn't do it. It failed miserably. We're fucking back."
From the moment the band graced the stage at a secret Nashville gig, they were indeed "back," albeit louder, heavier, and emboldened by an unbelievable year. Amped up to jump back in, their tour schedule took shape with festival dates followed by a co-headline run with EVANESCENCE in the fall.
Readying their fifth full-length album, they're delivering the soundtrack for a world ready to roar again.
"We've lost a lot of people, but we can start healing again," she leaves off. "I appreciate the little things even more. I don't only feel this confidence in myself, but also in every one of my band members. We're not the same people, none of us could ever be. HALESTORM is my source of my joy. It's my connection. It's the closest thing to my religion. We're moving forward. With this next album, I hope we're able to create a greater sense of community. We have a beautiful opportunity. When you listen to it, I want you to feel like you can walk through any fire."

GVF as Your Best Friend
"Hii can I request gvf as besties and dumb things that they would do with the reader, also can the pronouns for the reader be neutral 🥺" - @guitarfingers
Thank you so much for sending this in!! I really wanted to do it quick cause I just loved the idea so much!
Please please please, if anyone wants me to write something with neutral pronouns, please let me know (same with male pronouns). Sometimes I get on autopilot when I'm writing and start using female pronouns without thinking.
These fics are mostly written whenever I get five minutes to myself, so sometimes I get distracted as well but that doesn't make it right.
Warning: Cursing
Taglist: @anditsmywholeheart @babydxll
Josh
Oh what a loud friend. What a noisy naughty friend. What a rotten rotten boy.
Lmao just kidding.
Though Josh is probably a lot of those things when it comes to being your friend. He already seems like a little gremlin who is surprisingly wise in general but as someone's best friend?? Oh man you're in for a time.
Your camera roll is just dumb pictures of you and Josh. Almost exclusively. Probably some you don't remember taking as well---
10/10 the "I double dare you to do the thing" type of friend.
"I didn't think you'd actually do it---"
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN?! YOU DOUBLE DARED ME---"
"You're a terrible person (Y/N) how do you live with yourself?" //Gobblin snickering//
Has even less of a filter when he's with you, "oh fuck, you look like something the cat dragged in and then ate again and then--"
"What the--- Josh???"
Josh also has a foul mouth from what I gather so if you're going to be friends with him be ready for a lot of cursing.
Take it as a compliment! It means he's comfortable with you!
"Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?"
"Yes and your mom as well."
Despite all that. Josh I can imagine being a very protective friend.
Think the kind of person who gets mad when a person insults you and says, "Whoa, what the fuck, only I can say mean shit like that to them."
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah I'm fine Josh..."
"Honest?"
"Honest."
Puts an arm around you, "Good.... it would have sucked to tell you they were right if you were upset."
Probably just //Demonic screeching// most of the time the two of you are together.
Other times a lot of philosophizing and asking important questions. Or questions he feels crucial to ask.
Probably because he's baked but---
"(Y/N)?"
"Yes Josh?"
"Why don't we call big Ants… Gi-ants?"
"I'm not talking to you anymore."
Josh also would be very keen to take an interest in things his bestie is interested in. Especially important things.
As an example: If they are religious he'd want to make sure he understands their beliefs. He wants them to know he respects these things.
Over all, he's a chaotic force to be reckoned with... but one that is going to carry you along with him. You're never going to have a dull moment and you're never going to feel alone.
And most importantly you'll know you're loved at all times.
Jake
Jake always strikes me as so relaxed, someone who likes to keep to himself.
Despite that I do also see he and Josh are twins and have some things in common.
He probably is just as much of a gremlin, though less loud and obnoxious about it.
"I just want to make sure... you picked out that outfit right? Not your mom?"
"Yes...?"
"Okay good, I don't want to offend your mom."
More than anything I picture him and you sitting quietly together just doing separate things in a comfortable silence half the time.
I mean that might seem lame but those are my personal favorite kind of friendships.
The ones where you can look up from whatever you were doing and just make a face at them...
... and since he's that kind of friend he'd raise his brows first, but then immediately make a corresponding face silently.
I feel like deep conversations are the thing the two of you would be best at. No shooting the shit. Always straight to the important stuff.
Drinking whiskey by a warm fire vibes.
If you have any interest in music, even slightly, Jake would be all over that. He'd want to expand that interest to make it a love.
"I'll teach you!"
"You're too busy you don't have time..."
"No way! You're my best friend, I'm not letting some random person teach you how to play guitar. Be serious (Y/N)."
I can picture Jake laying beside his friend on the floor just smoking and listening to his favorite records.
Also a really warm and sentimental friend I think. Now this might just be a me thing but it's something I could see him doing, not often just for really important things. Maybe saving little things?
Like a ticket from a concert he went to with his best friend. Or a receipt from a really nice hang out.
Probably a Polaroid boy because of that.
That might just be me. I really feel like he likes to have things to look back on.
"Oh wow you still have that??" You ask pointing to a concert ticket from years ago tucked into the side of his mirror.
"Of course I do! I loved being there with you!"
Jake treasures his time with his friends, and its important to keep his best friend safe always.
Sam
ANOTHER FORCE OF CHAOS.
But. Sam definitely seems like one who actively tries to be a chaotic force, whereas Josh has it come naturally.
So I imagine a lot of making super dumb videos together.
"Hang on before we start!! (Y/N) can you do up my braids??"
"Fuck yeah i can."
I would want to see cooking videos made by the both of you. They'd be hysterical I know it. Get on it please.
Lots of spontaneous dancing together.
"What are you guys even doing...?"
(Horrendous dance moves that are not in-synch intensifies)
Probably a lot of shopping trips together, not necessarily to shop. Just to be out together.
Probably also would fight over who pays for lunch because neither of you can just pay separately.
Is it bad that I sorta imagine him being a bit of a wine aunt friend??
Like--- you both are just at a table drinking a glass of wine and just complaining about everyone and gossiping non-stop.
I do think he'd want to have a movie night with his best friend. They take turns picking, but hardly ever watch the movie... too busy making comments over the movie and pointing out flaws in it.
"WHY ARE YOU STILL STANDING THERE!! GET IN THE HOUSE--- ladies in horror movies man---"
"You'd be the first one to die in a horror movie... im almost positive."
".....thanks for that (Y/N)."
All that said Sam strikes me as one of those people who take note of little things about people.
So you would always get super personal gifts from Sam. Something that is irreplaceable.
It also means that by the expression on your face at any given time he knows how you're feeling.
"...oh? (Y/N) are you okay...?"
"Huh??"
"You look upset, did something happen?"
"Ah... just an upsetting text that's all."
"You wanna vent, I'll get the wine?"
A friendship with Sam means excitement of course but also a strong personal connection you probably won't be able to replace in your entire life.
Danny
I think he's the kind of best friend that wants to chat with your parents.
You know that friend. We can all picture that friend we have. The one who your parents adore and make you pretty sure they wish this friend was actually their child instead of you?
Danny is that friend.
All the boys seem to really enjoy the outdoors but I do think Danny strikes me as one of the boys who seems to enjoy it the most.
I can picture him wanting to be outside with his best friend.
Hikes. A day trip to the beach. Golf.
"Cmon (Y/N)! Can't have ya falling behind!" He'd yell when too much space builds between the two of you on a hiking trail.
I'm sure all the boys would do this but, I do think Danny would be the type of friend to go out of his way to make your life easier.
Even if this means doing something drastic.
"Your parents won't be able to make it out for the holidays...? Let's drive out there together."
"What?? We cant---"
"I've already got it planned don't worry about it."
There's also always the added benefit of getting to take out your emotions on his drum kit whenever you need to as well... this is an open ended invitation.
Danny unfortunately seems like the kind of person that listens most of the time and probably doesn't get to be the one to complain himself.
So you would have to keep an eye on him and prod a lot to get him to open up.
Even then I think you'd have to get him drinking before he'd actively talk about his problems.
It's not that he doesn't trust you. He just doesn't want to burden you, especially if you have a lot happening.
The kind of friend that wants to bond with your pets (they probably listen to him better than they ever did for you).
Let's be honest he'd bring your pets gifts so much.
"Another bandana?? Danny where are you getting these---"
"It has to match the collar I got him."
"Jeez get your own pet man."
All in all. Danny is a gentle soul, so keep that in mind as his best friend. He will give his all, probably 150%... make sure you keep up your end.
Otherwise he will burn himself out.
All in all:
Look it's pretty easy just to assume that all the guys would be good friends.
They all are sweet guys.
They all seem like people who enjoy learning about new things and people's interests.
As a group---
There would be so much fun and merriment as you all explore nature.
Bonfires and music baby.
Camping invitations of course.
Probably lots of drinking games (if you drink).
"Haha--- (Y/N) has to drink kings Cup!"
"Fuck my life..."
"Sucks to suck buddy!"
Lots of music being played.
Long drives with the windows down.
Stupid jokes.
Dumb faces.
A good group of guys that will honestly accept you as you are.
And that will also make fun of you mercilessly.
All out of love of course~
//Hopefully you liked it! For those who noticed, yes I did post this early by accident, I went to save this and like... hit the save button. And then I opened up my feed and there it was so!!! I don't know what happened.//

Hello! If it's okay, can I ask for a "Day6 as boyfriends" post?? Thank you and take care 😘😘
Thank you very much for requesting! Hope you’re well and enjoy this little something I came up with 😘🥰
--------------------------------------------
Sungjin:
I honestly love this guy
he isn’t one to seek attention or one to speak up
but i feel like he truly cares and loves with his whole heart
he may seem a little cold on the outside but he is such a sweetheart
so please do not expect him to be huge into PDA
he might have an arm around your waist if you’re in crowded places but other than that? nothing
around the boys he is also distanced
his reputation as leader could be at risk
but when the boys tease him of how cold he acts, he sulks and defends himself but then smooches your face
just to prove a point, not because he is absolutely in love with you, lol
dates with him are always super laid back
a nice dinner at home, movies and snacks
not much but exactly how you like it
Sungjin might be distanced by day but by night he NEEDS your affection and touch
please hold him while sleeping, play with his hair and just love him
i also get the vibes from him that he is quite insecure
he might seem confident but he needs quite a lot of reassurance
just please love him and make him feel like the king he is
“Did you know, that you are the man of my dreams? Like seriously, there is no one else that has ever made me feel this way. I love you handsome, I truly do.”
*blushes hardcore and slightly slaps you shoulder* Ahhhh stop it! You make me feel all mushy and soft.... but I love you too and I’m a very lucky man to be able to call you mine.”
“Look at you, being a bluhsing mess... declaring your love for me. Cute.”
“I’m not cute, I am sexy. Now please shut up and focus on the movie.”
Jae:
dude, Jae literally screams boyfriend material
he would be an amazing byofriend
not too lovey dovey and he will roast your ass whenever there is an opportunity to do so
while Sungjin will give you cute nicknames like “love” and “babe”, Jae will just call you “dude”, “bro”, or “buddy”
but to be honest? that’s why a relationship with him would be so chill and refreshing, it’s different - in a good way
Jae is a sleepy boyfriend, so PDA is a regular occurence
he always holds you somehow
either your hands, or his body flung over yours
he is not too much into public kisses though
maybe he will kiss your cheek or your hand but that’s it
dates with him will be so fun as well
you guys will usually just play video games together
and even if you are not that much into gaming, you will be when you’re with Jae
sometimes, when you’re too tired, he will play and have you in his lap
nothing is more relaxing than leaning against him while he talks in his calm, deep and soothing voice
although he is a fun guy, he is super loving
he will brush your hair for you, tell you he loves you 90 times a day and he will constantly remind you of how beautiful you are
i feel like Jae also struggles with his confidence from time to time, so he knows how important reassurance is!
please make sure to remind him that you love him and that he is more than just enough!
“Dude, don’t look at yourself like that! You look like an absolute goddess! And I’m not just saying this because I’m whipped for you but because you truly are a blessing to my eyes. If someone dares to say otherwise, they obviously have never seen your sexy ass and need to get their eyes fixed. Sheesh, I really got lucky.”
“Oh Jae, I love you.”
“I love you too, sexy beast.”
“Please... you’re ruining the mood.”
Young K:
oh please, he is an awkward baby
super loving and so head over heels in love with you
but SO awkward
he is always a bit torn between being the lovey dovey boyfriend and being a badass guy
the boys tease him constantly, even worse than Sungjin
so sometimes you will get showered with kisses and physical touch
other times he will treat you like one of his brothers
which is fine by you, as long as you get to spend time with Brian
btw, you also tend to call him Brian, which he loves
it makes him feel like a kid in love
i mean he is in love and sometimes a kid - but you know what I mean
PDA is as I said, something he isn’t always too fond of but sometimes he loves it and will show everyone that you’re his
weirdly enough, Young K is obssessed with your butt
when you guys are cuddling
he tends to lay his head on your butt and just relax there
butt massages are also a thing
he loves you, a lot
no doubt
dates with him are always a surprise
one day you guys will just chill, maybe write songs in the studio
and on other days you will do something more active
like hiking, going to the arcade or just simply taking walks in nearby parks
he is a pretty confident guy and rarely gets jealous
so he does expect you to be the same
he wants you to feel confident cause he only loves you
there’s no doubt he would ever want anyone else
so when you get jealous, he will take it very personal
he loves you so much and you think he might be interessted in someone else?
“Babe, listen. I find this accusation very offensive. I love you so much, you are the only woman for me. Why would I be looking for someone else, when I have you? Aka everything I will ever need? Don’t let other peoples stares make you feel insecure. The only thing that matters is us.”
“I’m sorry Brian. It’s just... you could have anyone. Yet you chose me.”
“Because all I want is YOU. There’s no one else, you are my person! I love you.”
Wonpil:
omg he is literally the cutest
but probably also quite savage
idk i just find him extremely funny
i think he is more on the shy side
he isn’t too overly affectionate
so please do not expect him to show any type of PDA
not in public and not with the boys
you will get treated like another member
this might be hard sometimes
especially if you are super affectionate (like me)
but he will make sure to make you feel loved to cease all your doubts
actions speak louder than words
definitely something he lives by, no doubt
he will spoil you with nice and romantic dates
omg for dates he will go all out
he will cook, decorate the house with rose petals, light candles
the whole shabang
another thing i believe to be true is that he will treat you in a super gentle and respectful way (all the boys will, but just saying)
i think Wonpil is the type of boyfriend that will constantly ask for permission, no matter what he does and no matter how long you’ve been dating
he is way too scared to do something you will not be comfortable or okay with, so he will always make sure you are absolutely fine with everything he does
“baby? can I kiss you?”
“Wonpil, we’ve been dating for how long? 2 years? Yes, you can absolutely kiss me, no need to ask!”
“but what if you don’t want me to kiss you? and i just put my lips onto yours? I don’t want to force you.”
“Dude, as long as I am dating you, i want to kiss you 24/7! even when i’m mad, i will always crave your kisses.”
“Don’t dude me! You’re spending too much time with Jae... now please let me kiss you. Thank you.”
ugh I just love this guy
he is so cute and beautiful
and his vocals... imagine him singing you to sleep
i gotta go cry my eyes out now, cause I will never find myself a Wonpil 😭
Dowoon:
last but not least, our maknae!
he is literally so sweet and HILARIOUS
the vlog where the attempts to talk in English?
duuuude I died
so I feel like, althouhg he tends to be an awkward bean too, he will constantly make you laugh
he will make a fool of himself, diss the others, talk in English...
anything to make his baby happy!
he will also shower you with aegyo
i just feel it haha
PDA is also a no no for him, he rather saves all the love and affection for when you’re both at home
with affection i mean cuddles 24/7 in bed, kisses (even with morning breath cause nothing stops Dowoon’s love for you) and loads of head massages
ugh he is a sucker for head scratches
i can slo see him trying to teach you how to play the drums
he will even take days off, just to be able to teach you
let me tell you, he ADORES you
please do not play him
you mean the world to him and he appreciates you sticking with him throughout his crazy and hectic life
there will be moments where he just stares at you with literal heart eyes
he finds it hard to believe that he got this lucky
and please, do not ever try to make him jealous...
he will be the poutiest baby EVER
*pouts and waits for you to ask him what’s wrong*
*but you ignore him, so he starts making weird sounds*
“what? you big baby.”
“I’m hurt by you.”
“I’m so sorry that I breathe the same air as Jackson Wang. I will suffocate the next time he is close to me.”
“THANK YOU! it would be very much appreciated.”

The Miys, Ch. 107
Happy Tuesday, time for a new chapter!
Writing author’s notes three weeks in advance is hard, I am realizing. However I am reasonably sure if I wait to write this note, I will forget, because Tuesdays are insane at work.
So, quickly: shout out to @baelpenrose for being my beta, as always. Also, thank you to @charlylimph-blog and @zommbiebro, for the characters in this chapter.
I hope you all enjoy!!
I had to admit, as I laughed at Charly’s face when she stole a bite of my food, that Huynh - and therefore Jokul - had a point about eating in the cafeteria/mess regularly. Today, I had taken a page out of his book, and decided on my lunch based on what someone else was eating that looked good when I walked in. No matter how the dish ended up being, the smile on the face of a random stranger when I stopped and told them their food looked good, along with asking if I could get some from the console, made my day.
Which was good, because it was the oddest fish pie I had ever eaten. In general, I neither hated nor loved fish pie - I needed to either have a request or a craving to make it, usually. However, when I originally saw it as I entered the mess, I saw flaky crust, meat, veggies, and a creamy sauce and called it a winner. I don’t think Charly was expecting seafood in general when she took a bite, and I certainly hadn’t been expecting scallops, even knowing I had gotten fish pie.
“That’s… that’s fish!” she sputtered, glaring at me in betrayal.
“It’s actually scallops,” I corrected, no less perplexed for that fact. “I was expecting mackerel and cod, or haddock. That’s what Conor always asks me to make, anyway.”
“But it’s fish,” she insisted. “I thought it would be chicken.”
“It’s not bad,” I admitted, taking another bite. “Just caught me off guard.”
Shaking her head and scowling, she got up to get her own food, returning with an actual chicken pot pie. Just as she was hooking her arm around it protectively - either protecting it from me or from my lunch, who knew - a pillar of grey and silver stalked up to the table before plopping down miserably.
Now holding her pie over her head - to avoid being flanked? - Charly stared down, eyes wide. “Mr. Bjornson?” she asked, bewildered.
Craning my neck, I realized she had a point, although the hair was somewhat dishevelled and the robes were wrinkled beyond anything I had seen him wearing previously. Not even Conor or I would wear clothes that creased, honestly. Hesitantly, I poked at him. “Did you just decide to die in front of my food?” I asked, skeptical. “Last time you interrupted my lunch, you were being kidnapped.”
Alarmingly, Jokul sat up, eyes red, sniffling back tears. “He won’t talk to me…”
Both Charly and I jerked back, surprised. Recovering faster, I carefully ventured a question. “You mean Ivan?”
Rather than answer out loud, Jokul gave a bigger sniff and nodded emphatically.
I was so not prepared to have this conversation, but I tried anyway. “Is everything… I guess, okay, for lack of a better term?”
“He works so much,” came the plaintive response. “He’s so tired all the time, and I’m trying to adjust to everyone looking at me funny and…” He stopped, tears rolling again, biting his lip in what looked like an effort to gain control.
“And?” Charly asked, setting her lunch down and carefully reaching to put a hand on his forearm.
“AndIdonthaveanyoneelsetotalktonowbecauseIrealizedIdontactuallyhaveany friennnnnnnds,” he blurted out quietly, the last part on a barely-constrained sob. I had to give him credit for trying to draw as little attention as possible while talking about something that was clearly a difficult subject.
“Oh, that’s bullshit,” Charly sighed softly, shaking her head. “Right, Sophia?”
I rocked my head a bit, thinking about it. “I mean…. I don’t know about friends, per se - “ Charly glared and kicked me hard enough to drive the breath out of me. “Hey! Cut me some slack?”
“I’m the one who got the punch,” she scolded, stroking his hair and carefully detangling it.
Fair. “Earning friendships may take some time,” I admitted. “But that doesn’t mean you can’t talk to anyone about what’s going on, you know.”
“Who, Councillor?” he demanded sadly. “Who do I have to talk to?”
“Well, you clearly thought I was a good idea - Ow, Charly!” Rubbing my shin, I continued. “Like I was saying, though. It kind of depends on what it is you want to talk about. If it’s struggling to come back from a negative public image… Simon, hands down, is the best person for that.”
Thankfully, Jokul went from looking despondent to confused. “Simon Rodriguez?”
Charly and I both nodded hard enough to pop our necks. “He was a complete ass when I boarded. I actually tried to kill him, and so did Tyche. He can tell you the details, but in the end, he made the effort to be a better neighbor, and now he’s an amazing educator whose students adore him.”
“Arthur Farro was a warlord, however,” Jokul tried to object. “Would he not be a better source of insight?”
“Absolutely not,” Charly responded before I could draw a breath, shooting the idea down instantly. “Mr. Farro doesn’t care what other people think of him, beyond making sure they aren’t trying to kill him too actively. He adheres to social etiquette in most cases, but it’s not for his own sake, more for the sake of those associated with him. Does he care if he’s trustworthy? Absolutely. Likeable…...” She winced as she trailed off, hand tipping in an ‘eh’ gesture.
“Which is why he wasn’t bothered in the least when you wanted a fight,” I pointed out, trying to draw the points together. “Whereas Simon didn’t realize how poorly people thought of him, and as soon as he did, he took steps to change it, even when it was hard. So definitely start there if you need guidance.”
“I will endeavor to do so,” Jokul nodded before his expression dropped again. “But what about Ivan?”
“There is nothing about him being tired that makes his ears malfunction,” I heard myself say. What? Why? Why was I doing this? “No matter how tired I am, my ear still works, and I can still listen to Conor and Maverick about their days. And sometimes that’s all that’s needed. Mutual bitching about a bad day is… pretty normal, actual.”
He sat up, paling, with a horrified expression on his face. “Oh dear gods, how do you manage two?!”
Charly and I traded glances of confusion before looking back at the distraught man who was slowly inching fingers toward my fish pie. I nodded to Charly, who wrinkled her nose and got up to grab him some food, while I addressed the former cult leader. “It’s usually easier than just one,” I confessed. “If one of us is too tired or sick, there’s always someone who can pinch hit.” I wasn’t about to admit that it was also made easier by the massive family I had acquired during my time on the Ark. That was the last thing he needed to hear. Softening slightly, I tilted my head and placed my hand on his arm. “Jokul, do you really not have any friends, anymore? What about… the ginger kid. I never got his name.”
“William,” Jokul spat with more force than I had seen since the day we met, catching me completely off guard. “A sycophant. He almost immediately asked what my plans were to continue forward with ‘our plans’.” The air quotes were a nice touch, but his face was nothing but sour. “I had to report him to Councillor Kalloe,” he confessed, face falling into a frown.
“Oh, wow,” I murmured. “Okay then. We need to figure out how you can meet other people, I think.” I was barely able to resist the urge to hit myself in the face. We? Why was this a we thing all of a sudden?
Thankfully, Charly came back, nose wrinkled at a second portion of fish pie. As Jokul dug into it, she perked up slightly. “The Undine! They have cultural events all the time! And! Andandandandand,” she started bouncing in her seat with each syllable. “Ivan loves those events. Not only does he drum up a lot of work, but he also loves meeting new people! You can do a date thing!”
That was, by far, the most harmless suggestion Charly could have made, and I made a mental note to send her a candy-basket at some point. “Plus, if Ivan is there, Zach and Hannah should be, too. You met them, right?”
“Did I?”
I managed not to roll my eyes as I reminded him. “The couple that were talking to Ivan the day you, um… met him?”
“Oh!” he exclaimed, sitting up straighter. “He mentioned they were friends of his!”
“Lord bless it,” I laughed. “Those two are probably his closest friends, honestly. So, something like that would be both a chance to make friends and something you can do with Ivan!” And something that does not require me to adopt someone who recently did his best to be a pain in my ass.
“And you said I can still just… talk, to Ivan, when he’s too tired to do anything else?”
“Yes?” I confirmed, slightly bewildered. “He still cares, I would think. Keep in mind, he does manual labor for a living, by choice. If he’s too tired to move, he is probably physically incapable of moving. It would be like Conor coming home, showering, and flopping on the couch. Good luck moving him, just grab him a pillow and blanket.”
Jokul arched an eyebrow at me, recovering something resembling his former ego. “I am quite capable of carrying Ivan to a proper bed, thank you.” His face abruptly softened. “I’m just new at… this…” he waved his hand vaguely. “Relationships, during a time of peace, I suppose.”
Huh. That never occurred to me, actually. “Hang on,” I thought out loud. “Have you had any portion of this conversation,” I frantically pointed between the three of us, “with Ivan?”
“Not.. yet?” came the sheepish response.
“Sir!” I sputtered. “If you do not go home right now - take your pie with you! - and talk to your poor…. Partner, boyfriend, whatever. If you don’t talk to Ivan, I will give Arthur permission to re-administer the ass-whooping and deal with Ivan later over it!”
Rather than being offended, Jokul seemed to take the admonishment for what it was, and dashed off. Charly, breathless with laughter, managed to recover just enough to give me the stink eye. “Did you just give solid advice to your adversary?”
“I won! Sort of,” I argued. “Besides, anyone that upset about a romantic relationship deserves some kind of slack, right?”
“Were you really going to sic Mr. Farro on him?”
I groaned, burying my head in my hands. “The less he knows about this entire interaction, the better. I’ll never hear the end of it.” And then, just as if my day could not possibly get any better, I heard a familiar, dry voice snark from behind me.
“The less I know about what the better?”
Oh, hell.

Tephra 03
Hello! Here’s the next thrilling instalment, hope you enjoy the banter as much as I do! :)
POV: Taehyung Warnings: None this chapter Word Count: 2.7K Rating: PG
Master List
Tephra 03
Namjoon had been acting weird, and not his usual weird, weirder than normal weird. Since he had started looking for that girl from the landslide, Joon had become hard to get ahold of, or when Taehyung had managed to find his brother, he always had somewhere to be. Taehyung hadn’t thought anything of it, though, until he caught sight of his brother breaking the curfew, not once, not twice, but three times. Sure, he wasn’t exactly abiding by it either, but for Joon not to follow the rules, something had to be going on, so Taehyung did what any good brother would do. He followed him.
It was that awful time of year where it was cold when you woke up and warm as classes let out for training. He never knew how to dress, but Taehyung had always hated being hot, so tonight he was wildly underdressed for the weather. As wonderful as his trusty flip flops were, it was moments like this where he wished he had inherited fire magic instead.
Shaking the thoughts from his head, Taehyung kept up with Namjoon as he headed towards the training grounds. After-hours training, specifically unsupervised after-hours training, was one of the worst rules you could break; anyone who was caught was expelled. This had to be important for Namjoon to be risking expulsion.
Taehyung watched curiously as his brother knocked on the large wooden doors to the grounds; he didn’t get to see much, though, immediately encased in stone in his hiding spot. He had been caught.
“You are literally the least conspicuous person I’ve ever met.” A voice poked fun at Joon.
“I’m not sure I follow.” He could hear the confusion in his brother’s voice.
“Gods, you’re just lucky he cares about you enough to follow you instead of telling a teacher.” The voice sighed, clearly exasperated as the earth shifted beneath him.
“Oh.” When Namjoon turned around, he looked stunned, and it took everything for Taehyung not to laugh.
“Hi, Hyung.” He smiled. “Hello, Hyung’s friend.” he recognized her from the landslide. At least Namjoon found who he was looking for. What were they both doing out past curfew, though?
“YN, you can call me YN.” She introduced herself. “I believe we’ve met before, briefly.”
“The landslide,” Taehyung confirmed with the shake of his head and a smile. “Thanks for taking care of him.”
“All part of the job.” She bowed slightly and shifted, so her badge hit the light. That explained why she hadn’t been in any of the classes. Though Taehyung was still confused, what was Joon doing out past curfew?
“Friendship isn't supposed to be considered a job.” Namjoon finally piped up.
“It is if you’re going to get yourself followed here every other night.” YN laughed, “Technically, it is still my job, though, friends or not.”
“So, uh, as comfortable as I am. Is there a protocol for this situation? Am I in trouble? Do I pretend I didn’t see anything? Can I come in for snacks? Do you even have snacks?” Taehyung asked the now bickering pair.
“I, crap, give me a second.” Without waiting for an answer, YN jogged back into the training grounds shutting the door behind her.
“I didn’t peg you as the illegal activities sort of guy.” Taehyung poked fun at his brother.
“I can have fun too.” Namjoon countered, looking a little peeved. “What about you? You had to be out past the curfew to have noticed me, let alone follow me here.”
“See, I AM the illegal activities sort of guy. I was just sitting on the roof admiring the sky when I noticed my plucky older brother wandering somewhere he shouldn’t be wandering.” Taehyung enjoyed watching his brother bristle.
“Taehyung, you are a member of the Atlas royal family now. How many times do you have to be told there are rules we have to follow.” Namjoon’s words were staccato, even though his eyes didn’t match the harshness of his tone.
“Technically, I’m only legally royal. The minute they find out if our younger sister can use magic or not, I’m immediately less important.” Taehyung tried to shrug, but his shoulders got caught on the rock surrounding him.
“Just because you're last in line for the throne does not mean negative actions on your part don’t affect the family.” Namjoon sighed.
“I’m not so sure about that; I’m not related to the royal family by blood.” he relaxed against the cool stone. “I’m sure they’d just disown me and move on. Reese would take my place in line with her legitimate magic and all that. I could write to my mom, maybe find my sister?”
“You make it sound like you’ve planned this out?” Namjoon questioned, now obviously warry.
“Not in an, ‘I’m going to do something illegal and get kicked out of school and the family,’ kind of way. I’ve always prepared myself for the possibility that I’d be removed from succession if someone questioned my lineage enough, though.” Taehyung said honestly.
“Just because you’re not related to us by blood doesn’t mean you’d be so willingly discarded,” Namjoon spoke, clearly trying to reassure his brother. “Besides, father had your old estate searched for any remains years ago. They never found anything; what makes you think your sister made it out alive?”
“They never found anything.” Taehyung’s voice grew serious. “That whole estate collapsed and was burned to the ground. They found my dad; why wouldn’t they have found her?”
“I don’t know Tae; I wouldn't get your hopes up about that. Even if she was alive, wouldn’t she have tried to find you by now? Or at the very least, your mom?” Namjoon tried to sympathize.
“What if she can’t?”
Before his brother could answer him, the stone surrounding Taehyung disappeared, and the large wooden doors swung open.
“Okay, you’re clear. He says you can come in.” YN skipped over towards the two of them. “There’s some ground rules though, before you do.”
---
Taehyung had never been one for rules, but technically by following these rules, he was breaking some pretty major ones. So he let it go. The entire situation was odd; not only were there a few hundred people from families just like his, the Academy was willingly training these people against the law. It was badass. If Taehyung had any shot at finding his sister, he could start here.
Yoongi had explained when he was brought in that this needed to be kept under wraps. None of the instructors from Atlas knew about what was happening when the bells rang, and it needed to stay that way. Joon had basically signed his life away to the Min family by agreeing to keep all of this a secret, so Taehyung followed suit. He was distantly related to Yoongi after all; maybe if his life came crashing down around him in the future, this interaction would win him favor and refuge in the Adiyan Empire. That’s where his dad was from, so he had always wanted to visit.
“Hello, Earth to Taehyung.” YN’s hand waving in front of his face snapped him out of his thoughts.
“Huh?”
“There he is.” She snickered before continuing. “Does this all make sense? Do you have any questions?”
“I’ve always got questions,” Taehyung responded with his favorite boxy smile.
“Do you have questions we can answer?” Yoongi sighed as he leaned back in his chair.
“Probably not.” Taehyung shrugged as he drummed his fingers on the desk.
“Okay then, you can come by whenever you want, or never. It doesn’t matter as long as you don’t get caught by professor Rittenhouse.” YN spoke plainly. “I’m on nighttime guard duty for a week at a time, once every month, but I frequent the grounds during the day when I’m off duty if you ever need me.”
“How is that off duty?” Namjoon asked the question Taehyung had been thinking.
“If I see something stupid, I can get someone else to deal with it.” YN chuckled. “I’m more of what you’d call reserve forces.”
“Still have no idea how making rounds during the day is considered off duty, but maybe I'm not understanding something right.” Taehyung joked.
“He’s got a mouth on him, doesn’t he?” YN smirked as she deferred to Yoongi.
“Runs in the family.” Yoongi mentioned nonchalantly.
“What? Is everyone at this table related to each other?” Namjoon smoothed the wrinkles out of his forehead. “You should find a better joke.”
“Nah, I kind of like it.” YN continued, poking at Joon’s arm.
“Of course you do.” Namjoon rolled his eyes.
“All that aside, you’re free to join us on training days.” Yoongi offered. “They rotate through instructors from Adyia, Cordelia, and the Arribellian Alliance. So we get a pretty interesting training regiment.”
“Do you spar with each other?” Taehyung wondered aloud.
“We do, unlike the other classes here, we’re a healthy mix of people from all nations. So we work with what we’ve got.” YN stated proudly. “You may come to find that the style of magic students here use differs greatly from what you see in your field training and exercises, though.”
“Sounds like fun; when can I start?” Taehyung sat up a little straighter in his chair.
“We start in about twenty minutes. This one here was coming early to spar with YN.” Yoongi pointed to Namjoon.
“Before you even ask, YN is part of the Academy’s night watch and Head Mistress Cecilia’s personal retinue. She is plenty skilled in non-magic based combat arts.” Namjoon boasted.
“So she can teach me how to use a sword,” Taehyung asked in excitement.
“I could, but that’s definitely the face of someone who shouldn’t have a sword.” YN laughed out loud as she answered his question.
“But I’ve always wanted to use a sword. If not a sword, what about a lance? Or something stealthy like assassin knives.” Taehyung’s voice grew with his enthusiasm.
“Again, yes, but also no.” YN’s eyes crinkled as she smiled.
“I’m more concerned about your choice in weaponry.” Namjoon sighed, shaking his head.
“Eh, they’re pretty standard choices.” YN shrugged. “I’m just glad he didn’t ask about a broad sword. Those things are heavy, and I’d hate to be the one to break the news to string bean over there.”
“Hey!” Taehyung shot out of his seat. “I’m perfectly capable of lifting a broadsword! I can manipulate metal, too you know.”
“Oho, big man on campus.” YN straightened herself and gestured towards the door. “Let's see what you got then.”
“I’m not getting trained tonight, am I?” Namjoon whispered to nobody in particular.
“Nope.” Yoongi shrugged and followed the pair out into the ground to join the other students. “Should’ve thought of that before you got her all riled up.”
“I didn’t rile anyone up!” Namjoon argued.
“No, but you brought dumb to dumber, so it’s sort of your fault.” Yoongi smiled to himself “Do you wanna train or talk?”
“Train, I want to train!” Namjoon spoke as he ran after Yoongi.
—-
It’s not that Taeyhyung thought they had been lying, just that he didn’t expect the training courses to be so different. He’d been exposed to magic at a young age, and had the privilege of learning from a private instructor for most of his life. Sure he wasn’t the best, but he didn’t expect to be this covered in dirt, let alone panting after one day of new exercises.
“You ready to tap out?” YN asked from across the field.
“Never!” Taehyung smiled, straightening himself and preparing for another round of attacks.
Once the ground started flying his way he threw up a shield, hoping to deflect a majority of debris. The problem Taehyung had always had with the style of magic taught to most earth mage’s was it was way too defense heavy. Sure you could take a beating, but unless you were fighting against another earth mage it was difficult to take an offensive position once you began defending.
“I keep telling you, you’ve got to redirect, not deflect.” YN spoke beside him and Taehyung felt his soul leave his body.
“How did you get that close that fast?” Taehyung asked, bewildered.
“I made a tunnel.” YN shrugged and took a stance in front of him. “Now, stand like this.”
“Isn’t that a water mage stance?” Tae asked.
“Good eye.” YN only paused briefly before continuing. “Water mages have exceptional offensive and defensive capabilities.”
“You’re sure that’s not just because it’s easier to see through water than it is earth?” Taehyung asked.
“That may be a part of it, but not all of it. Watch Nik.” YN pointed at the tall, dark haired male working with the other earth mages. “When you use water magic, it’s about fluidity. Part of that is being able to take the momentum of your assailant’s attack and use it against them. Taehyung watched carefully as YN mimicked Nik’s movements, it was almost as if they were dancing. Not shy he joined in, carefully matching YN step for step.
“That’s good, just like that.” YN encouraged. “Watch your hands though, they look like limp noodles and that’s not gonna redirect anything.”
“You don’t know that.” Taehyung stood up, placing his hands on his hips.
“I do, but if you don’t believe me we can have you try for yourself.” YN smiled and took a few steps back.
“You know, I’m starting to think you’re the reason they tell people who smile like I did earlier that they can’t have swords.” Taehyung snickered as he took the new stance.
“Perceptive.”
Taehyung didn’t have time to respond before YN started with another round of projectiles. Her control over the earth was astoundingly good, so he had been surprised when YN had mentioned she wasn’t very good with metal based magics. He’d never met someone who could move the earth that efficiently who couldn't at least utilize metal magic. Something was very weird about YN, but he couldn't put his finger on it, not that she left him much time to think about it now.
The first few flying rocks were deflected, mostly out of habit, until Taehyung remembered what the point of this exercise was. Redirect. Switching his feet he moved into an unfamiliar position and did his best to remember the new movements.
It was messy at first, and the few stones that made it through stung as they bit into his uncovered arms. Eventually though, one of them moved right. Sort of, the projectile spun around Taeyhung like it was caught in some sort of orbit, before careening off to the side in the opposite direction of his target.
“You need to relax! Use your momentum!” YN called as she sent another round of rocks.
Taehyung took a deep breath and let the tension in his shoulders leave with the exhale. When he opened his eyes the projectile YN sent was nearly there. He was sure it wasn’t graceful looking, but despite the awkwardness of his movements, when his hand made contact with the earth he spun it around and launched it back in her direction. Even though YN caught it without hesitation, Taehyung couldn’t help the elation that bubbled up and out of him.
“Yes! That was it, wasn't it?!”
“It was,” YN smiled at him proudly and gave him a thumbs up.
“Again, let’s do it again!” Tae took his stance matching YN.
The longer the exercise went on the larger the flying rocks got. Taehyung was enjoying the challenge YN provided, and when he knocked her down he whooped.
“Nice shot!” YN laughed as she rolled onto her stomach. “You’re fast.”
“Of course I am.” Taehyung wiggled his eyebrows at her and gave her a boxy smile.
“You two are having too much fun.” Namjoon commented as he and Yoongi walked over.
“No such thing.” YN smiled up at Joon as he offered her a hand.
Taehyung watched the pair, the tiniest pangs of jealousy bouncing around in his ribcage. That made no sense though, he’d only just met this girl, why would he be upset?
“YN!” Taehyung called to get her attention. “Can I help you with your metal magic?”
She blinked at him in disbelief, “You can try.” She answered.
“I like a good challenge.” Taehyung expressed as he jogged over to join the other three.
“You may be in over your head.” Yoongi grimaced.
“You don’t have any earth mages here right?” Taehyung asked, knowing the answer. “Maybe I can help fill the gap?”

Shall We Dance?
(A/N: I told myself I wouldn’t join ffxivwrite cos i don’t write that often, plus being able to do something in one day would be difficult for me...and yet I wrote this just today :’D idk now if i will try any ffxivwrite prompts, and im not submitting this for today cos it doesn’t fit the prompt and wasn’t written for it in the first place, but i’m considering it a bit more
Personal rambling aside; while I as a player stuck with Bard all the way through my msq playthrough until i finished shadowbringers, and didn’t switch to maining dancer till about 5.2, i figured for character timeline’s sake, I wanted to look at when miqo!Fufu might’ve first found the dancer troupe. It feels fitting that they’re based in Limsa at the level to start Stormblood, so this little story shot is set just before the trip to Kugane
No direct story spoilers brought up here, not even for the dancer questline
@ffxiv-writers)
“I’m still not happy about this. They can dress themselves up as ‘privateers’ all they like for whatever loophole, it doesn’t suddenly change the fact that they’re pirates.”
Alphinaud sighed, “As you have said so many times now, sister. And I shall remind you again that they were the only crew available on such short notice, and it affords us a chance to travel under Garlean radar.”
“And yet we still have to wait for them to prepare the vessel. If we weren’t so pressed for time I almost wish we could’ve asked the Admiral to remove her colours from one of her own ships for this-”
“With what hands? Most of her men are now in Gyr Abania aiding the Revolution, and what few remain here would be beholden to the citizenry. I know you’re frustrated with the current terms but at least be reasonable. With any luck we can secure a different ship for coming home at least.” Alisaie shot him a look, eyes narrowed and lips pressed thin, however she didn’t comment further.
The bustle of the market crowds passed them by, paying the siblings no mind as they waited. A flash of red broke through the crowd, and a little pink blur behind as Lyse and Tataru joined the two, boxes in hand.
“We’re all stocked up on supplies for the trip. No word from Carvallain yet?” Lyse asked, placing her own crate stuffed with foods on the ground. Heads shook, and the woman shrugged nonchalantly, saying, “Well, a little while longer to wait isn’t going to hurt. We’re getting a ship either way, and for now, we have good weather at least, and I heard there’s a show going on today.”
“What kind of show?” Alphinaud asked.
“Clearly the kind that can empty a market,” Alisaie observed, and indeed when the group looked around, the formerly swamped stalls were barren, leaving vendors to restock after the rush, the thundering of cobbles having faded further into the city.
“Well, Fufu isn’t back yet, so maybe it’s her little show?” Tataru chuckled, knowing of the Bard’s tendency for sudden musical moments. “You three can go and find her and enjoy the fun. I can take our supplies to the ship and fetch you once we’re ready to set off.”
The group split, with the Lalafellen woman heading for the docks, while the trio went back through the market, keeping an ear out for any activity or music. The closer they got to Bulwark Hall, the buzz grew louder, many a person chattering excitedly. A faint tune drifted over the sound of the crowd from the southern docks.
“It doesn’t quite sound like her kind of music,” Lyse mumbled, cupping her ear to strain over the din.
“We won’t know till we actually check,” Alisaie stated, already beginning to push past a pair of Roegadyn toward the music. The crowd only grew thicker as the music got louder. True to Lyse’s observation, the vibrant guitar and violin was unlike their miqo’te friend’s usual style of lively harp music. A swift schwing of metal against metal cut through the music, bringing out a cheer in the people. With a final push, the Scions broke through the final row to view the spectacle, ignoring the annoyed mutterings from behind them.
A miqo’te dancer spun in steady steps with the music in the centre of the plaza. It wasn’t their own miqo’te friend, yet the fire in her movements caught their attention all the same. The grace in her steps, the power in her swinging arms, chakrams in hand, one could understand the crowd’s zeal at the mesmerising movement.
Yet all too soon after the Scions’ arrival, the music came to a bombastic close and the woman struck her finishing pose, another schwing ringing in the air from her chakrams brushing against one another. The roar of the crowd was deafening, forcing an applauding Lyse to lean closer to her friends and yell, “She was quite good, wasn’t she?”
“Yes, though she isn’t who we were looking for,” Alisaie shouted back. The throng of people had already parted, the excited buzz fading with the people, and with the freed space at the plaza, one other figure stood other than the Scions, her face the picture of awe even with the broad smile she wore.
Alphinaud noticed her first. “There you are.” Fufu’s ears flicked, suddenly looking sheepish.
“Oh, I didn’t even realise the time,” she chuckled nervously, “Sorry, I only meant to check in on some spots here in case people needed my help while we were waiting, but I got a little distracted.”
“I can see why, it was very impressive,” Lyse smiled, patting the miqo’te on the shoulder. Fufu nodded, almost bouncing on the spot as she exclaimed, “She was! I haven’t seen that dance since before coming to Eorzea, but it was still as magical as I remember!”
“Hold on, you’ve seen it before?” Alisaie asked, to which the woman nodded again, her eyes glittering. Alphinaud spoke before her, having spied the baggage the troupe used, “It appears they’re from Thavnair. You’ve said you’re from there yourself, or at least raised there.”
“Yup! They’re Troupe Falsiam, and they generally only perform in Radz-at-Han. At least I haven’t heard of them doing many tours in my lifetime. My tribe lives pretty far from the city and most trade is done with travellers, but sometimes they’d plan special trips for certain goods or just to treat the younger kids, and I always loved watching the Troupe when I went.” Fufu let out a happy sigh, caught up in memories. The group jumped however when another voice chimed in.
“You seem very familiar with our troupe, my dear.” They turned to see a woman walking over to them. If the metal rings hanging at her own hips didn’t betray her as a dancer, the way she moved with elegant poise and grace would have instead. She gave the Scions a polite bow in greeting.
“Forgive the interruption. I’m merely surprised that we already had a familiar fan on these shores. Troupe Falsiam hasn’t visited Aldenard in a long time, as you so rightly said. Ah, but I forget myself; I am Nashmeira, leader and teacher of the troupe. The young dancer here with me is Ranaa, one of my brightest stars currently.” Ear flicking from having heard her name said, Ranaa turned away from the boxes she was helping to pack, still dressed in her dancing outfit, and gave the group a wave.
“She’s very good,” Fufu quickly complimented, eyes wide with glee at the turn of events. Ranaa smiled back, then wandered off down the path, taking a bundle of clothes with her.
“Hmm, good, but ever still learning,” Nashmeira nodded. Alphinaud stepped forward and gave a polite bow of his own, prompting an eye roll from his sister behind him. “Tis a pleasure to meet you. We are the Scions of the Seventh Dawn.”
The woman tilted her head, recognition flashing in her eyes as she responded, “Aye, I’ve heard of your organisation. Though if you don’t mind my saying so, a job such as yours wouldn’t leave much free time. I’m curious then that our show caught your attention.”
“You’d be right. We’re unfortunately caught waiting for our vessel to be ready before we depart for the Far East,” Alisaie answered, then motioned to Fufu with a small smile, “Well, that and we were looking for this one here. She was taken in by your performance before the rest of us.” Nashmeira herself looked closer at the miqo’te, as though appraising her.
“Hmm,” she hummed, “Actually, you have quite the presence…” Then she nodded.
“Might I request a dance of you?” she asked. Surprise crossed all of the Scions, even more so the one addressed. “I’m well aware that you’ve clearly pledged yourself to another organisation, so despite any reverence you would have for our Troupe, your priorities lie elsewhere and I wouldn’t wish to ask you to join us and leave them behind. But I see in you the grace of a dancer and I would call myself a fool if I let you leave here without even trying to unlock that potential.” Nashmeira unhooked her chakrams from her hips and held them out to the miqo’te.
Fufu hesitated at first, a blush spreading across her cheeks, however Lyse spoke up, laughing, “Don’t go pretending you’re shy now, you’ve never let a chance to perform slip past before.” The twins seemed to show their approval as well, with Alisaie watching with an expectant smile and Alphinaud saying, “Tataru hasn’t come to tell us the ship is boarding yet. A quick presentation should be fine.”
Finally bolstered by her eagerly waiting companions, Fufu took the chakrams, testing the weight of them in her hands. They swung gently on her fingers, yet the rhythm made her arms bounce as well. Nashmeira motioned to her musicians, who scrambled to take their instruments out of the bags, and said, “Do not feel as though you have to copy Ranaa’s dance. It would take a lot more training and skill to be able to perform that to its full potential. For now, improvise as you see fit. I wish only to see how you move.”
The first strums of the guitar were matched with hesitant footsteps and stiff arms kept close. The joining of the drums saw her test a swing of the arm, though the weight of the chakram almost threw her halfway across the plaza, only righting herself with a clumsy shuffle. Yet as the music built up, the keeper found her rhythm, getting bolder with her kicks and jumps, and freely waving her arms around her, and where she had started with a mask of nervous concentration, she now laughed with joy.
Joy that was mirrored in the cheers of her friends to the side, the encouragement from a returned and newly dressed Ranaa, and the curious mumblings of a returning crowd, albeit smaller than the one the original performance had garnered. Unaccustomed to dancing to music not of her own playing, Fufu was still in the middle of a spin when the final drum beats landed, ending the song.
“Whoops,” she giggled, stumbling over her own feet when she finally stopped. The gathered crowd clapped politely, evidently pleased at the amount of entertainment on show that day. They dispersed quicker than before, though that afforded the troupe teacher a chance to step forward with her observations.
“As I expected, on many fronts. You do have a dancer’s grace to you, though as evident by one that hasn’t been trained, there’s a heaviness to it all. Some clumsiness as well, though whether that was nerves or again, lack of training... But your energy was spectacular as well, even through the rough of it all. Not just anyone can draw in a crowd the way you did, even with an unrefined style like that. With some work you could be a fantastic performer.”
“I’d like to think you already had a headstart on performing,” Lyse added, the Scions rejoining the centre plaza as well, “all that work you’ve done with the old Bard in the Shroud, I’d say you already had plenty of stage presence without having ever stepped on a stage.”
“That was incredible!” Everyone turned, seeing Tataru at the entrance to the plaza.
“How long have you been there?” Alisaie asked as the smaller woman walked up to them.
“Since I think halfway through all of that. You were amazing!” she praised, making Fufu smile. Alphinaud however looked serious, asking, “I take it the ship is ready then?”
Tataru jumped. “Oh right! Yes that’s why I came here. We have to go now.” A solemn look came across the Scions as they nodded. Fufu herself pouted, ears flat against her head.
“Definitely now?”
“Unfortunately. As nice as this little detour has been, we are still on an important mission. My apologies, friend,” the boy said, placing a reassuring hand on her arm. Yet as she smiled back, albeit still looking crestfallen, Nashmeira spoke up herself.
“Actually, if you were so taken with dancing that you would wish to continue it all the same, I do believe I have a solution that could benefit us all here. Your companions included.” Curious looks were shared among all while one of the musicians, at Nashmeira’s whispered request, went searching in one of the bags.
“You see, the dance of Troupe Falsiam is not like most others in the world. It is suited not just for the stage, but also for the field of combat.” The woman’s smile grew as she saw the mixture of impressed yet curious looks on the younger folks’ faces. “Although I would prefer to teach you myself, in lieu of that, I would offer you this instead as a substitute.” At this, the returned musician held out his hand, a glittering pink stone laying in his palm and a spare pair of chakrams hanging from his fingers.
“A soul stone,” Lyse gasped.
“Aye, one with many past dancers’ experiences etched into it, going back generations. I would like for you to practise without it, but should you have need of the skills in a pinch, or even a desire to dance freely without inhibition, you will have it with you.” Fufu had already grabbed the crystal and the metal rings, smiling widely as she admired it.
“Thank you so much! I’ll practise as much as I can, with and without it!” she gushed, bowing deeply. For that, the woman smiled back warmly.
“I shan’t keep you any longer, since your business is clearly important. You make for the Far East you said?” They nod. “Then I wish you luck in whatever it is you are off to do. And to my new pupil I say that whenever you return, if we yet remain here in Eorzea, I would very much like to see how much you’ve grown while you were away.” Fufu nodded feverishly, mumbling more thanks as she bowed again.
Even as both groups finally went their separate ways and the Scions followed after a now hurried Tataru, the Bard and newly christened Dancer didn’t take her eyes off her new Soul Stone, not until they had boarded the ship and sailed far into the waters, where she had plenty of time to practise with her new skills.

Like a sock in a washing machine
‘I just feel like a dirty sock in a washing machine, you know?’ Stay with me.
Recovery is hard. It is relentless. It is draining and it takes every single ounce of strength not to give up each day.
I’ve been battling an eating disorder now for years. It’s been a sly monster, shapeshifting with time and with each attempt to usher it out of my life. It knows my vulnerabilities and oh how it loves to play on them. What started as a ‘harmless’ desire to increase my physical activity and eat ‘more healthily’ was soon to become extreme restriction and anxiety around food. Years of excessive control, excuses and lies. After attempting to challenge the restrictions, to fight back, my monster sharply shifted. It took on the form of extreme bouts of restriction, punctuated by periods of binge-eating everything in sight, devouring cupboard contents and even bulk buying food to be eaten in secret. I compensated with exercise or restriction until the next time. I lied and excused myself. It became a relentless cycle in which nothing was ever ‘enough’.
I’m still fighting it. The fear of failure, the desire to be desirable, critique and striving; they play into the hands of an eating disorder as if custom made. Recovery itself lends itself to the rhetoric of pass and fail, good and bad, worthy and unworthy. Time after time I’ve gone to bed with the desire to ‘succeed’ tomorrow. I’ve gone to bed with overwhelming sickness and promised myself it was the last time I binged. I’ve gone to bed hungry and deprived, promising it was the last time I skipped dinner.
So today, while attempting to explain the way I felt, a washing machine came to mind. Like a worn and blackened sock, feeling dirtied. Stained and undesirable. I’m told that recovery is possible. It’s said that the dirt will be removed and the white restored. But right now, I’m in the midst of the process and all I feel is the aggressive force of the drum as I am thrust around and around. The overwhelming waters that surround me. The prospect of being clean and dry can often seem all too far away.
“Soak me in your laundry and I’ll come out clean, scrub me and I’ll have a snow-white life. Tune me in to foot-tapping songs, set these once-broken bones to dancing. Don’t look too close for blemishes, give me a clean bill of health. God, make a fresh start in me” - Psalm 51:7 (The Message translation)
Anyone who has used a washing machine will likely agree that it’s a simple science. A fairly mundane chore, maybe, but one which doesn’t evoke too much confusion. Insert the required quantity of detergent, choose your setting and let time do its thing. It’s a good job our laundry isn’t conscious as we pile it into the drum. While we can be quite confident that it will be okay, that those little socks will come out fresh and bright, the process itself is a little more stormy. Anyone who has an old machine will empathise with the shaking and rattling of a determined spin.
But recovery means trusting in the process.
It means trusting that there is purpose in every battle. There is healing even in the heartache.
A brave man once told me that he swears by three Ts: Trust, Talk and Try. We must trust in the process, even when it feels tumultuous. Especially then. We must keep talking. Voicing the lies that try to claim our mind means giving ourselves the chance to talk back to them, and allowing those we love and trust to respond with words of truth. Lies love silence. They love being hidden in the dark, where no light can counter their hold. Finally, we have to try.
A recent talk by a church leader reiterated the importance of this, of living with a spirit of trying. We aren’t expected to succeed every time. In fact, we should honour the occasions on which we fall short or stumble. For at least we tried. Trying is where faith manifests itself as action. Where we step out with hope. We are called to live a life of trying.
So today, I am going to sleep once more with the hope of a new day. With resolve to keep trying. To keep trusting in the process. To keep talking (or in my case, writing). Because healing doesn’t always happen overnight, but recovery continues with another day.

DLSU’s Strategic Plan is Lit
First Impressions
DLSU’s strategic plan is nothing short of brilliant. I don’t mean to compare our school to other schools (I actually do mean to), but I think that compared to The Areneo, DLSU has really thought through well their plans for the future, keeping in mind the well-being of key stakeholders. The strategic plan does not only cover the improvement of system processes for the welfare of the students; it also covers the localization of SDG projects to embody our school’s value of zeal for service, which I really, really admire.
Reader, if you would be so kind as to allow me to digress and say that it’s no wonder that DLSU was not a proponent of the academic freeze that students were clamoring for a while back. This strategic plan tells me that the administration has things under control. Things might have started out rocky, but they’ve managed pretty well so far, and now, their plans make me believe that things are only going to get better.
Let’s Talk Strategy
The ANIMO strategies -- albeit a little cheesy and let’s be honest, the words were obviously forced to fit into the words ANIMO – address student concerns, the uncertain future, and the larger social environment comprehensively. Although these strategies have yet to materialize, their ambitious plans convey DLSU’s goal to be the top university in the Philippines; even when everything else is uncertain, DLSU’s service hasn’t wavered. Their Accompaniment (A) strategy is the one I like best, and it is one of the reasons why DLSU will maintain its status as one of the best universities in the PH. Their accompaniment strategy stresses the importance of making sure that student workload is manageable and “authentic,” to quote the speaker. Making workload authentic is honestly something I like because students need to do assessments and activities that actually matter. The pandemic has revealed the proverbial truth that students have their own lives apart from school. We have our own problems; so, when teachers give assessments, it has to be something that will benefit us. None of that “make a brochure” or “do a creative skit” stuff. Also, encouraging a manageable workload is a great way of showing students that the system cares for their mental health. Yassss, we aren’t robots, thanks for acknowledging that, DLSU!
The A strategy also entails strengthening student support and reimagining the student life cycle to fit the new world we’ve been thrown into. The A strategy basically encompasses almost all the community needs that were brought up by the survey respondents; these needs were E-reliability, Abatement, Innovation, and Support. By responding to the needs of stakeholders, DLSU effectively maintains its position as a top university!
To me, the strategy that establishes DLSU’s international prestige is, surprisingly, the Opening (O) strategy. The O strategy is focused on creating policies for when the uncertain future comes. This establishes DLSU’s international reputation as a university that can adapt to changing times; there’s honestly nothing worse than a school that is so conservative that they end up being an enemy to progress. By staying relevant through progressive policies, and by acknowledging that there is a need for permanent change for when face-to-face classes will be allowed, DLSU stays relevant with its prestige and everythang.
A Little SWOT, please?
A drum roll for the SWOT analysis, please! I actually have some fancy bullet points for you all, so you can visualize things a little better.
Strengths
· Open to change
· Already started online learning even before the pandemic started
· Listens to stakeholders
· Research efforts continue
· Is one of the top universities
Weaknesses
· Some professors are old-school and are not tech-savvy
· Internal processes are not optimal
· Student support is not useful enough to be relevant
Opportunities
· No other university adjusted to the new normal as quickly as DLSU
Threats
· Intermittent wi-fi (E V E R Y W H E R E)
· Government policies ineffective and arbitrary*
· Typhoons
Based on this very primitive SWOT analysis, I would say that DLSU’s success rate in implementing its strategies would be 90%. I am quite hopeful for the future because they’ve exhibited several strengths that, to me, outweigh all the weaknesses. When you have the strength of being open to change, which is the most important strength in this VUCA world (Miss Sarmiento, are you proud of me? I just quoted you :D), you can essentially take on anything. The weaknesses are very annoying to us now, but I know that along the way, DLSU will address them. The weaknesses are just glitches in the plan that can be smoothed out along the way.
With the way things are going right now, there aren’t many opportunities that the institution can maximize (from my perspective, at least), and there’s a load of threats that are beyond the institution’s control. This is why I am only 90% confident that DLSU can effectively implement its strategies. The wi-fi issue is especially the worst. Wi-fi in the Philippines is the biggest party pooper of all time. The government is another issue because DLSU can’t fulfill its plan of fully resuming campus access in 2022 if the government keeps up its antics. Hence, it is likely that these uncontrollable factors will hinder the success of the more ambitious key strategies, such as the localization of SDG projects and the campus redesign.
*An example of government policy:
The Ideal Business Leader Cares
I do believe that the strategic plan promotes the objectives in the Vocation of the Business Leader. First of all, DLSU’s strategic plan fulfills the Good Goods because of the mere fact that they plan to continue operating the school even in a pandemic. Their service continues to create students who are the critical thinkers of society. So, it’s fulfilling this service even when times are hard, which is the exact embodiment of the Good Goods if you ask me. DLSU also fulfills the second goal of the Good Goods, which is to maintain solidarity with the poor. La Salle schools literally started as schools for the poor. Now, DLSU continues to give out great, comprehensive scholarship grants, and as a scholar of DLSU myself, I can say that DLSU invests a lot of money in its scholarship programs, which is honestly so nice it makes me want to cry; education is the greatest equalizer and will last a lifetime, and I am really happy that the poor are receiving it just as I am. DLSU has even made arrangements with telecommunication companies, so that struggling students, faculty, and staff have access to pocket Wi-Fi.*
Now, let’s move on to Good Work. DLSU promotes the objectives of this principle through its Impact strategy, which seeks to ensure a pipeline of research outputs. This priority towards the pursuit of knowledge is one that embodies the value of human work. People should work not just to make money and live, but to improve themselves and the world we live in. Work should not just be the thing we do to survive; it must also be the way that provides meaning to our lives. That is what DLSU provides for its faculty through its strategic plan. And that’s what I’ve seen with all the professors in DLSU. They’re always the best in their fields because they’ve been allowed to grow in the workplace. Lastly, DLSU promotes Good Wealth through its planned SDG localization projects. They plan to give back to society, which fulfills the objective of just distribution of wealth.
I think that these objectives are a reflection of how a good business leader must be. This strategic plan has made me realize that a good business leader thinks for the present and the future. She looks at the needs of the community and answers them with care and with the common good in mind. She makes decisions, knowing full well that those decisions impact other people other than herself. She promotes a humane workplace, one where compassion and empathy rule over individualistic, “bahala ka diyan” mindsets. She invests in the development of others and society. And most of all, she proves to the public that she is worth trusting – that she is capable of being held accountable for the health and well-being of stakeholders. All of these are embodied in DLSU’s strategic plan. To quote Socrates, virtue is knowledge; because DLSU sets an example of caring for the larger society, I too have the duty to continue this mission.

Where do I fit into this strategic plan?
Answering this question is second nature to me. My unique contribution to the success of the university’s objectives is to be a compassionate and empathetic person to myself, my classmates, and my teachers; to be stringent, unrelenting, and selfish during these trying times is to become an opposing force to the strategies. These strategies depend on our ability to adapt along with the university; hence, we must do our part and be kind. We must understand each other, become a support system for those struggling, and do our best to help each other stay sane. When the university reaches its objectives, I expect that we will be receiving education of the best quality when compared to other Philippine universities. We will be receiving an education that is flexible to our circumstances, and an education that will make us want to give back and innovate for society – the way that DLSU has given back to this country these past few months.
Before I get sentimental and become a puddle of tears while writing this blog, I’d like my readers to know that I have fallen in love with DLSU. I stand by its values and fervently respect all the decisions it’s made during this pandemic. I am the (self-proclaimed) critical-thinking, well-rounded student I am today because of this institution. As a scholar of DLSU, I’ve learned that quality education is not a privilege, but a right and I dream of the day when the Filipino is able to learn what I learn, see what I see, and feel the same passion that I feel when I think of this country.
That’s all, readers. See you next time!

The Apology- A New Possession One Shot
Welcome Back!
I'm a liar, aren't I? Not even two days after the last entry is posted saying I wanted to chill out, here I come with another 1k+ word oneshot to conclude this plot line. I really did enjoy writing Christmas Date, so I decided to resolve this mess the same way I started it. I did my damndest to properly connect this as many times as I could. I think I did it about 3 times intentionally, so look for those references. This resolution hit me suddenly yesterday and I felt like an absolute genius. This didn't change the fact that it took me about 6 hours to write in its entirety.
I am personally proud of this one, so please enjoy
Also available on AO3
January 24th
Ino feels awful. After a full month, she still felt awful over what happened on Christmas with Sai. Her feelings were still as strong as ever for the man. Too strong for her to control at the time. And now she’s made him feel like he’s the cause of her problems and it’s made her guilt only multiply.
She knew that avoiding him was only making the problem worse, but how was she supposed to face him after walking out like that with no explanation? Or worse, explaining to him outright what had happened. He wasn’t ready to hear about that.
As she ran home that night, she struggled to hold her tears back.
Save them for when you are home
Her parents had taught her that tears were a sign of strength, but she felt more vulnerable than ever.
She had to face the fact that she was now deep into her feelings for Sai. But she knew that his situation required delicate action. She had seen first hand his struggle to handle emotion. She wanted to save him then from that genjutsu, and now she wants to save him from himself. And as much as she wants to save him, it may only overwhelm him
Besides, there could be a chance he will never feel more towards me
Indeed Ino saw that Sai’s feelings were present, but they were buried under many layers of pain and suffering. The damage had been done, and while he improved by leaps and bounds, that trauma would never be truly erased. He had been a child that wasn’t raised with warm love and affection, but with the cold embrace of order and duty. Feelings like this don’t just come naturally. It infuriated her that Sai’s case was not isolated, but many children also suffered this fate during the period of unrest in their country. This fury only drove her to support Sakura in opening the Children’s Therapy Center that now had its own wing in Konoha’s hospital.
Speaking of which, the massive forehead of Konoha had recently approached her regarding her recent dilemma. Sai must’ve told her in confidence and she just had to once again stick her nose into things that were none of her business. But to her, it was her business when her friend and once teammate had come to her “asking for help,” as she had put it. Ino tried her hardest to dodge every question in her shoddy yet intense interrogation. She was successful in keeping her at bay by saying that she had every intention to talk to Sai, but was suddenly disheartened when Sakura revealed that he would be partaking in a 2 week mission very soon and that she didn’t have very much time.
I’ll just apologize when he gets home
Now those two weeks were up, and she had been desperately trying to gain the courage to approach him.
Luckily, she didn’t have to bide her time much longer, as Sai had entered the shop that afternoon, a sketch pad under his arm and hesitation present in every step.
“Ino, I-”
Ino held up her hand to silence him. “Do not apologize. You didn’t do anything wrong.”
She paused, wondering if Sai would respond. He looked to be waiting for her to continue, the fingers of his right hand quietly drumming against the side of the sketch pad. Seeing this nervous mannerism, she took a deep breath before obliging.
Before she could utter a word, he pulled out the sketch pad, holding it in front of him. It revealed a single Zinnia flower drawn at the center of the page.
That deep breath might as well have been her last. Her hands suddenly covered her mouth.
“I want you to know how I’ve been feeling over this.” His voice was timid and wavering, betraying his nearly blank expression. He took a shaky breath, casting his gaze to the floor. “Because I don’t have the slightest clue as to what this is.”
Ino tried to listen to his words, but was still in the process of forming a coherent thought. “The thought of absent friends.” That was the meaning of the Zinnia. He just used hanakotoba to communicate with her.
Duh! Why hadn’t I thought of this before?
“You know what this means, right?” His eyes were now on her, one pale finger pointed to the flower.
She could not trust herself to speak just yet, so she only nodded.
Face now steeled, he lowered the sketchpad back down to his side. “I need to show you something else. Please come with me.”
________________________________________________________________
By the time Ino joined Sai at the entrance of the shop, she had calmed down a bit from her initial shock. She couldn’t help but feel incredibly touched. Sai had gone out of his way to study a language that she understood and strongly connected to. She wasn’t sure if he knew how romantic of a gesture that really was…
But that wasn’t the point! The point was that a wonderful opportunity had presented itself. Sai wasn’t too fluent in sounding out his emotions, but the flowers could. He successfully conveyed that he was affected by her absence in his life using the zinnia. Studying further into hanakotoba could really help him. The idea of teaching him about it made her heart soar. This didn’t last long, for the situation at hand had caught back up to her.
She lagged behind him as they proceeded their route towards his apartment. Or at least she assumed. This was the same path they took on Christmas Eve. The only silence came from them, as the village around them was abuzz with normal activity. She noticed that Sai kept tossing glances behind him, as if checking to make sure she was still following him. He was an excellent sensor, so why would he feel the need to reassure himself?
He must really be nervous.
The silence between them followed them up until they reached his apartment once more. Ino had made note that this silence was unlike the awkwardness of that night. This was a more intense silence. One that only grew deeper in meaning the longer it persisted. Ino’s trepidation began to overwhelm her as she climbed the steps leading to their destination.
Sai halted in front of the door, bringing his free hand up to scratch at his head.
“I’ll be honest with you, I don’t know what has gotten into me lately. All I know is that I feel guilty for what I did.”
Why should he feel guilty when I did this to him?
Ino was tired of making him feel this way. She wanted him to be able to embrace his emotions, not push them away.
“It’s ok.” She threw on a mask of indifference. “I was conflicted. I couldn’t help it. No one could.” She tried to wave off his concern, but he wasn’t convinced.
“But I made you feel conflicted. That wasn’t my intent.” Opting for a different stance, he crossed his arms as best he could with the sketch pad still in hand, left hand hanging onto his elbow.
Ino’s aggravation was growing stronger. He was as inquisitive as ever, but she couldn’t have him guess correctly. She had to use a different tactic to throw him off her trail.
“You know that there are other problems in my life, right? Christmas is always a hard time for me and mom since dad died!”
Sorry dad. I hate to use your name like this, but he can’t know.
Sai’s eyes widened and his arms dropped to his sides. He couldn’t argue with that.
Got him
Sai straightened up his posture before bowing to her
“I apologize for being so selfish. Forgive me.” His apology pierced the air. She had never heard him speak with such a commanding tone.
The silence that followed was as sharp as the apology.
Oh brother. This is going over well, now isn’t it? God I’m such an idiot.
Ino inwardly chastised herself. While it wasn’t a complete lie, dragging her own personal problems instead made him feel even worse. Sincere enough to bow. She realized that by covering up her own feelings, she in turn invalidated his. She had to get this back on track.
Realizing she hadn’t moved a muscle, he tried again, force completely forgotten.“You can leave. I’m sorry I dragged you out here.”
“Sai, lift your head. It’s okay. It’s not your fault. You wanted to show me something, right?”
Sai upturned his head, body still bowed. He was clearly caught unaware, confusion lining his face.
“But I mistakenly felt victimized by your grief. Why do you care what I have to show you?”
Ino had to sigh. He really was hopeless.
“Because we are friends. Your feelings matter too.”
That made Sai slowly return to his previous posture. He readjusted the sketchpad back under his arm before reaching for the doorknob, head dropping once more to focus on it.
Ino peered inside and audibly gasped.
Of all the things she expected, none of them matched this.
The floor was covered with sheets of paper. All of them were unfinished drawings. The easel that sat in the center of the room still held the unfinished sketch of her from Christmas. Upon further inspection, all of the drawings were of her. She unconsciously stepped into the flat, her hands moving up to cover her mouth for the second time that day.
“Sai… What happened?” She turned around to find him still standing in the door frame, shoulders now sullen. He stiffened himself up to hesitantly take a step inside.
“It’s strange, isn’t it? After you left, I couldn’t help myself. But since you wouldn’t let me look at you, I forgot what you looked like.” He chuckled at that, another smile lining his face.
As if this man couldn’t tear her heart to shreds anymore.
Ino spoke before the words could get trapped in her throat. “Sai. I’m so sorry.” She took one more painful glance at the easel before facing him. “I had no idea that I did this to you.”
Sai’s grin fell from his lips. For the first time that day, his gaze finally focused on hers completely
“I invited you over because I am grateful for all you have done for me. You saved my life and have only tried to help me when I have done nothing to show for that. You are so-” He paused, trying to find the right words.
Come on. Tell me how you feel.
Ino mentally cheered him on as he took in an audible breath.
“-Honest and unafraid to express your emotions. I admire that about you. I really want to be able to do that too.”
Her heart began to slowly piece itself back together, strengthening. She carefully walked towards the stool, minding her step with all of the paper littering her path.
“Why don’t we try this again then? She shot him a mischievous grin. “I promise to let you finish this time.”
She watched a dazzling smile bloom on his face before remembering his feet still worked. He followed her motion towards his own stool.
“I’ll hold you to it, Beautiful.”
She closed her eyes with a contented sigh as she seated herself. She was wonderfully wrong about Sai. This whole thing only proved to her that he would be capable of falling for her. She just wasn’t sure if all he needed was time, or a gentle but effective push.
“Please open your eyes for this. I want to depict them in this.”
She followed his direction without question. He was as blunt as ever, but that wasn’t exactly a bad thing.
She suddenly remembered that maybe she should act a little sooner with Sai. Naruto and Hinata had been in their own world since that moon mission, but her own boys were acting awfully suspicious as of late.
She made sure to smile for him, because she was pretty certain that he was smiling too.
And there's the conclusion! I hope you enjoyed this one. We are closing in on 10k words for the entire project and it hasn't even been a month since I wrote the first chapter. We are so close to getting these two together and I am getting psyched to do so.
I want to thank all of the readers who have done nothing but support my writing so far. I can't stress enough how thankful I am.
Until next time, and as always comments and criticism is always accepted

Broken Pride - Chapter 39 (Finale)
It’s been one shitty year. And not even because of all that’s happening in the world. I apologize for being on hiatus for over a year but my mental health has taken a downfall and writing has not been a priority. Now I have finally gotten back into the groove and I am finally writing things that I l don’t hate. I am about to enter college so a posting schedule is not certain but I promise I will try my best to post things as a distraction for others during these times. Enjoy this finale. More things to come in the future.
Pairing: Eric Coulter/Sky (OC) Warnings: swearing, mentions of scars, blood, death
Past
Eric is walking down the hall, his steps the only sound in the abandoned hallway. He grumbles to himself, wondering why he lets himself be swayed so easily by Sky. His phone rings, startling him from his thoughts. He answers, his curiosity peaking when he hears Max on the other end of the line.
“Where are you?”
“Near the dorms. Why?”
“Where’s Sky?”
“I left her on the rooftop.”
“Mark escaped. He never made it with his transports to Candor. I was just notified.”
Eric drops his phone, sprinting down the hall.
Present
The sky gets farther away as she falls. The wind rushes past her ears and the cold envelopes her, making her feel painfully alive but distantly numb at the same time. Her back hits the net, her body springing up and down with the momentum of her fall.
Thump, thump, thump…
Her body finally settles, her heart beating fast and ears drumming. Her fingers weakly clench the net, her body slowly processing the feeling of the material.
Net. Safe. Alive.
She finally blinks, a shaky sigh leaving her body. Her sight falls on Eric on the rooftop, his head seeming small from her position. He suddenly disappears and a lone tear falls from her eyes.
Net. Safe. Alive. Eric.
She moves her body, turning to the side slightly. Her sight lands on a figure next to the net. Blood running from the head to the floor.
Net. Safe. Alive. Mark is dead.
“Sky!” Eric yells, his footsteps thundering towards her.
His hands are on her cheeks, his eyes surveying her body. Her eyes never leave Mark’s body and Eric finally turns to see. His jaw clenches and his eyes find hers.
“Safe?” Sky whispers, her voice cracking..
Eric nods, his lips kissing her forehead.
“Yeah. You’re okay.”
“Eric! What-“ Max’s voice falters as his sight lands on Mark.
Eric runs his fingers across the silent tears falling from Sky’s face. Her adrenaline is starting to wear down and the pain is setting in.
“You’re safe. Come on. You’re okay. Let’s go.” Eric mumbles, his voice tethering Sky to this world. Her head settles underneath his chin. She breathes in his scent. Her fingers run over his skin. Eric. Her world.
4 months later...
“I’m Eric. A leader for the initiation stage for entering Dauntless. This is the first step for entering. I hope you’re not afraid of heights.”
Sky surveys the different faces of the initiates. A girl with bright red hair stands out to her. She smirks, recognizing homemade hair dye when she sees it.
“Who’s first?” Eric asks, staring at the crowd.
“Me.” A boy says, stepping forward.
Sky sighs, looking over at a grinning Four. She’s about to respond before she is cut off.
“No. I’ll go first.” The girl with the red hair retorts.
She steps in front of the crowd and props herself up onto the edge. Sky smirks at Four, making him sigh.
“Enjoy babysitting.” She smirks, walking away to the stairwell.
She walks down the hall, stopping when a hand grasps hers.
“And where are you going?” Eric asks.
“I won the bet. I want to delay my return as much as possible.”
Eric smirks, walking alongside her.
“I would much rather see the face on the guys when they hit the bottom. Their screams sound better from the bottom.”
Eric grins, “I like the way you think.”
“Let’s go help Lauen with the brats. I’m sure they’re going to have fun seeing all the puking people.”
“I thought you said I was the weird one.”
“Shut up.”
Time Lapse
“Are you coming to the party tonight?” Four asks.
“I don’t know. I’m still taking some meds. I’ll be too tempted to drink if I go. And I’m not trying to dance too soon. I just had my last surgery and I don’t want to be back in a hospital for quite some time.”
“Is Eric going?”
“I doubt it. But I don’t know for sure.”
“You should come. Instead of being cooped up in your apartment all night.”
“It’s not all that bad. I have company. Even though it’s grouchy company.”
Four smiles, taking a sip from his drink. Later that day, Eric strolls into Sky’s office. She peers up at him from her slouched position at her desk.
“Yes, Eric?”
“You planning on staying here all night?”
“Not alone, no. If you’ll join me.” She smirks.
“I’m going to the party. Thought you might want to take a break from paperwork.”
“I thought you weren’t going?”
“I wasn’t going to. But you need it more than I do.”
Sky sighs, leaning back in the chair.
“You sure you want to go to this party for me? I’m sure you missed those things with me being in and out of the hospital.”
“Can you just accept the lie for once? I’m trying to be more selfless like you wanted me to. I know I’m not good at it. Take it or leave it.”
She smiles, leaning forward.
“Okay, Mr. Coulter. Let’s party.”
A few hours later, Eric is standing by the entrance of the pit, shuffling on his feet. The loud music can be heard inside, sounding like a loud but consistent heartbeat. People pass by him, actively avoiding getting too close to him. The sound of heels clicking on the floor makes him look up. He is grateful the darkness can disguise his look of incredulity as he stares at the sight in front of him. Sky is wearing a dark blue dress, tightly enveloping her curves. It’s long enough so her scars on her legs are covered. He knows how insecure she is about them and the story they tell. But he loves when she shows them off, it just proves how much of a badass she is. The front of the dress has a long slit running down her chest. She turns in place, letting him see the slit that goes down her back. She decided to show her back scars. Eric had gotten used to seeing her in hospital gowns and the thought saddens him. All her surgeries caused her to wear loose and comfortable clothing. He didn’t know he had minded until now. He missed her old self and he is sure she missed being able to dress up and feel like herself again. She turns back to him and grins. The doors open and the neon lighting allows her to see his face.
“Thought I would show myself off since you were just standing there staring. You’re supposed to compliment me, you know.”
He clears his throat and frowns.
“You look fucking hot.”
She laughs loudly, snaking her arm around his waist. She leans up and kisses him lightly, leaning back. The look in his eyes sends butterflies to her stomach.
“I know I do, thanks for stating the obvious. Let's go in?”
Eric places a hand on her lower back and leads her in. The loud music bumps through their bodies as they make their way through the crowd. Eric gazes up and meets the eyes of Max, perched up on the higher levels of the pit. He nods, disappearing. Eric leads Sky to the far area of the pit, meeting up with Four.
“You came.” Four yells over the music.
“Yeah, I did!”
The music suddenly stops and Max appears at the top of the pit.
“Welcome everyone! Today’s celebration is for Sky! A true example of what Dauntless means! Today we celebrate her last surgery and her presence here among us as a leader!”
Loud whoops and claps fill the pit and Sky grins over at Eric.
“This is your idea of a surprise party?”
“Something like that.”
Sky looks up and raises her head at Max, who motions his drink to her and he takes a swig. The pit erupts and Sky smiles. A few hours later after many songs that she forced Eric to dance with her, his hands find hers and pull her towards him.
“Let’s get out of here.”
They intertwine their hands and maneuver through the crowd. Their footsteps echo down the abandoned hallways.
“Where are we going?” She giggles.
He stays silent and leads her to a stairwell. They walk up the stairs and open the creaky door out to the rooftop.
“Can you believe I don’t come out here much at night? It’s beautiful.” she mumbles.
Eric leads her to the edge and they hug each other, looking at the stars and moon.
“This is where it all started.” she mumbles.
Eric’s hands hug her tighter, his lips touching her forehead.
“Yeah.”
“It’s been so long. Sometimes it feels like it just happened yesterday.”
“I wish I had convinced you to stay. None of this would have happened.”
“Hey, I got some pretty sexy scars from it, didn’t I?”
He grins, “I can’t say no.”
“I don’t wish it didn’t happen. I learned a lot of things, and so did you. We’re not who we were before it. We both had our prides broken. Now it’s up to us to fix it, together.”
Eric pulls away and looks down at her.
“Us and our broken pride.”
She smiles, “Yeah. Us.”
The End.

Track By Track: Quiet Marauder - ‘Tiny Men Parts’ EP
Today Quiet Marauder release their brand new ‘Tiny Men Parts’ EP via Bubblewrap Collective. We caught up with Simon Read from the band to give us a track by track insight into the wild and wacky world of the mighty QM. THE BUSINESS DEAL: When we first started Quiet Marauder as an active live band, there were three of us involved and this was one of our first co-writing efforts. The song channels the darkness of characters in American Psycho and Wall Street, how their overconfident facades could easily slip into derangement. A lot of the tracks on our debut MEN were focused on these types of characters: menacing, brooding and celebrating their own outrageous behaviour with cocktails of drugs.
I WANT A MOUSTACHE, DAMMIT: I met a chap called Solomon in a bar in Cardiff who told me about his plans to write a musical about Gummo - a really strange cult film starring Chloe Sevigny. There’s a scene in it where a kid keeps saying that they ‘want a moustache, dammit, like Burt Reynolds’ so this became the central core of the song we ultimately came up with. Playing it live, we often give audience members their own Burt Reynolds face masks, ask them to chew through his eyes, and then put their tongues through the holes that are left. It still amazes me that we have such a high conversion rate of people doing this, but there is no better sight in the world than a room full of Burts all with tongues for eyes.
RODA & THE BUNKER: This was part of a collaboration with a young adult fiction writer called Lucy Christopher. She asked me to write some songs to accompany a book she had written called The Killing Woods about teenagers playing dangerous, dark games in a forest. I guess this track is about how those hormones can overspill into damaging, frightening and intimidating behaviours.
IT WASN’T ME, IT WAS THE MOON: For me, this track epitomises some of the core issues of our MEN album and subsequently Tiny Men Parts. This was intended as a critique of the duplicity embedded into our interactions, our attempts to manipulate or coerce others into doing things. Also, though, it’s about our willingness to blame situations and events on almost everything but ourselves and how, if you take that to the extreme, it grows increasingly mad and ridiculous.
THE INTERNAL MONOLOGUE DATE: My internal conversations are, at once, horrifying and bewildering. I’ve gotten accustomed to them being that way over time and, I hope, learned how to stop my mouth from talking before my brain has fully considered what is about to happen next. This wasn’t always the case, though, and back when I was single and dating I would commonly find myself saying something completely inappropriate by accident. This track takes this idea to extremes that I’ve thankfully never reached in real life. Dirty talk really doesn’t suit me somehow, I think I might sound too sarcastic for it to be effective.
LUCKY TONIGHT: The classic lad banter of ‘I’m feeling lucky tonight’ has always baffled me. I remember someone saying before a night out ages ago that they were looking to get lucky with a lady before dawn. While everyone else laughed, I started thinking to what extent this chap may try to influence his own ‘luck’ by doing some bad, bad things. So this is the extremity of the ‘lucky tonight’ position laid bare; the protagonist in the song will do literally anything to ensure their luck comes through.
THE ANIMALS ARE SPYING ON ME: I love animals. Pretty much every animal is outrageously cool. But the thought of all animals organising themselves collectively is also an incredibly daunting one for me. I was confronted by issues of these nature when I was looking at a cat from out of my window. He or she was sat in my garden, preening him or herself, when a large pigeon flew down and sat next to him. I’d heard stories about putting cats amidst pigeons and was expecting carnage, but the pigeon and the cat just looked at each other and then turned their heads towards me and started walking towards the window. I freaked out and closed the blinds and then wrote this song.
EGGS!: The full Cardiff band really did a number on this one. It has morphed from its original incarnation as a one-man, lo-fi acoustic oddity into a pop-punk tour de force which I absolutely adore. This was written on the way back from a stag do in Devon. Me and my travelling partner were listening to Radio 4 and there was a documentary about eggs on, which seemed to go on for about two hours. I couldn’t believe there was so much to say about eggs but it just kept going. Most of the eggs listed in the song were genuine phrases lifted from that documentary. But then I made quite a lot up too.
I WANT A MOUSTACHE, DAMMIT (DANCE REMIX): Myself and Reginald Foxwell from My Name Is Ian often do duo shows together where, without the full regalia of the six-piece band, we are more reliant on keyboards and acoustic type instruments. On our 2019 tour we introduced this version of I Want A Moustache, Dammit to some unsuspecting parts of the UK - predominantly through Reginald’s clever fingers - and we all fell in love with its stupidity. Casio keyboard backing tracks are the cornerstone of modern indie-pop.
Released by Bubblewrap Collective, Tiny Men Parts was be preceded by digital single ‘The Animals Are Spying on Me’, lyrically about human capability for irrational and yet somehow intractable paranoia. Following that the full EP, arriving in limited edition heavyweight white ‘fried egg’ vinyl with accompanying ‘real man’ temporary tattoos is out today.
Quiet Marauder are: Simon M. Read: Vocals, acoustic guitar Ian Williams: Vocals, electric guitar Rowan Liggett: Vocals, bass guitar John Whittles: Drums Francesca Dimech: Vocals, trumpet, melodica Kadesha Drija: Vocals, percussion

Is the print publishing world picking up online/fandom terms? How they are using them? How do we feel about this?
So this is... attention-getting, for folks who like to follow publishing and meta stuff.
https://twitter.com/sapphicxrey/status/1215065948677443584
https://twitter.com/TorDotComPub/status/1233391556750647299
(2nd tweet -- TW, mentions of non-con)
Are we seeing the beginnings of book publishers directly borrowing from online/fandom culture in promoting their books? How do we feel about these examples?
More below cut.
Exhibit #1: screenshots of Bonds of Brass promo from Jan 8 2020. (Which is probably going to have reactions of “haha, cute” at most.)
Transcript of blurb:
“If you like...
forbidden romances, “there’s only one bed”, cityships, weaponized umbrellas, powersuits, secret princes, best friends, best friends PINING, fake dating between PINING best friends, tactical streaking, the minivan of starships, cigar-chomping cyborg ladies, scary empress moms, galactic-level bisexual disasters, LEGACY (WHAT IS A LEGACY?), rooftop hopping, golden trios, rumblin’ drums, bootleg fireworks, BIG SPACE BATTLES PEW PEW, a surprisingly functional public transit system, mob trouble, one hell of a pilot, the inherent DRAMA of empire, a nice interlude in a river, smoking a joint that’s been on the floor, sick stunts, slick grifts, hiding in a dumpster, or any combination of the above,
Then you might like
BONDS OF BRASS”
The Twitter responses seem to be generally enthusiastic. (And also, “FinnPoe! FinnPoe!”)
Personally, I’m intrigued from a meta-view of “oh so that’s definitely pulling from online world and fanfiction world, interesting. I wonder how much fanfiction culture is starting to influence print book culture and promotion.” Maybe I’ve got some questions like, “Ok so moneymaking companies such as Penguin are now using culture developed by the not-moneymaking-world of fanfiction? How do we feel about this?” Anyway, the book looks cute, I’m interested enough and I might get it from the library.
I suspect many people’s reactions are along the lines of “hm, interesting”, “sounds like a lark”, or “haha they’re using AO3 tags as promo”, etc.

So this is getting mixed reactions on Twitter. All dozen or so reactions, so far. Here’s text transcripts and bio info from repliers, below. I’m being a little obsessive, mostly to show that there’s a mix of queer, book-ish people in the replies (including the author).)
Noncon is nonconsentual sex, rape. Even in fandom it's a content tag, not a promotional term. I can't imagine being a rape survivor and seeing this come across my TL. -- @WriteSomeGood [queer rainbow] [Cis queer homemaker, aspiring author, maker of incredible cinnamon buns. I’m not a survivor but it was an instant “no thank you” from me. And I was sincerely looking forward to this prior to. For more context, here’s the blurb from the author website. Below is the blurb from the publisher’s site:
“Docile
K.M. Szpara
K. M. Szpara's Docile is a science fiction parable about love and sex, wealth and debt, abuse and power, a challenging tour de force that at turns seduces and startles.
There is no consent under capitalism.
To be a Docile is to be kept, body and soul, for the uses of the owner of your contract. To be a Docile is to forget, to disappear, to hide inside your body from the horrors of your service. To be a Docile is to sell yourself to pay your parents' debts and buy your children's future.
Elisha Wilder’s family has been ruined by debt, handed down to them from previous generations. His mother never recovered from the Dociline she took during her term as a Docile, so when Elisha decides to try and erase the family’s debt himself, he swears he will never take the drug that took his mother from him.
Too bad his contract has been purchased by Alexander Bishop III, whose ultra-rich family is the brains (and money) behind Dociline and the entire Office of Debt Resolution. When Elisha refuses Dociline, Alex refuses to believe that his family’s crowning achievement could have any negative side effects—and is determined to turn Elisha into the perfect Docile without it.
Content warning: Docile contains forthright depictions and discussions of rape and sexual abuse.”
So that’s a lot of info and reactions.
Personally: at first glance, I absently skimmed the tweet and “hurt/comfort” popped out, and I was like “What? Mainstream publishing is cool with this now? I was wondering if ‘hurt/comfort’ would one day become commonly used in publishing [related post]. But this is way sooner than I thought.” And then I read the rest of of the tweet and thought, “Wait, what?”
And then I started reading through the tweet replies and thought, “OK, at the risk of getting a bunch of Tumblr drama, I want to bring this to the whump community and see how people feel."
As for myself, one of my squicks is non-con, and I’m not really interested in hurt/no comfort. So just from the tweet, I know the book is not for me. The official blurbs confirmed that. In this sense, this is like skimming Ao3 tags on a fic and saying “pass” on a story.
However, I have questions about the specific promotion of the book. So the official blurbs are pretty standard. What about that tweet, which Tor (and the author, who helped put it together) put out? Because I think an official publisher’s Tweet comes with different context than Ao3 tags.
First, the different internet spaces. You can filter tags on Ao3 and Tumblr. I know you can mute words on Twitter, but is that the same thing? Also, would people be expecting these tags on Twitter? Compared to Ao3 or Tumblr or Tumblr Whump spaces?
Within the Tumblr Whump community, from what I’ve browsed, the community attitude (guidelines?) seem to be “Write and discuss what you want. Be sure to tag it, use content warnings, or otherwise clearly communicate if you have things that may be triggering. Respect people’s squicks/triggers. Walk away from what you don’t like.” Like, tumblr whump has a very specific culture of trying to balance discourse/stories about potentially very dark stuff, but also wanting to make sure the IRL people and Tumblr users are okay. There’s always posts going around about how to do this, are we doing this in the right way, ethics, so on. Also -- and people can correct me -- the whump tumblr space might be where tags are content warnings for people to stay away, and also what people might actively look for. So if any space is going to discuss if this promotional tweet checks out, I feel like it’s this space.
Also, to note again, Tor Tweets are in the money-official-publisher-world, not unpaid-tumblr-people or unpaid-fanfiction-fandom-world.
Maybe I just want to ask, “Hey those first two tweet responses, does they have a point? Tor using ‘noncon’ as official promotion? On Twitter?” I mean, I’ve previously written, “The CW and TW tags that Ao3 writers use, I really wish those were used with published books as well.” But somehow, the Tor tweet was not quite what I was expecting. Maybe for reasons similar to that first tweet response. (I guess one could debate if a tweet is really promotion or just information... you know what someone can correct me, but I’m gonna say that a Tor.com tweet is promotion, compared to information like Ao3, and that tweet was there for promotion.)
Those tags operate within specific Ao3 and Tumblr cultures and infrastructure. I don’t hang around Twitter for whump stuff, IDK what the culture is. Anyway, does dropping these tags into a promotional tweet from Tor.... translate?
The tweet is evidently gathering the people who are there for it, and the people who aren’t there for it are quickly realizing that they are not there for it. But personally, the Tor website blurb does a better job at that, using writing that I’d expect from a publisher for communicating fictional non-con situations. (Maybe the blurb content warnings are what I wanted more of, when I said I wished for CW and TW in books.)
Anyway, there’s no huge drama about that Docile book promo on Twitter, as far as I can tell. So this is a niche thing, right now. But. The promo for Bonds of Brass and for Docile might be the beginnings of a trend of well-known book publishers borrowing from online writing / fandom culture and terminology in order to promote or categorize their books. These two promos might set a precedent or have other significance.
So if anyone has discourse on the tweets or potential future trends...

Red Roses (A Harry Hook x Reader/OC)
A/N: Yall. This chapter is hella long. I hope you all enjoyed it!! If you see any mistakes at all please let me know so I can fix it pronto! This is such a fun story to write and I'm glad people are liking it! If you have any ideas or requests you would like me to add in future chapters, let me know! This is for you guys! <3 :)
Summary: Ruby Hearts, daughter of the infamous Queen of Hearts, was abandoned by her mother when she was young and forced to live with her father, the King of Hearts, in Auradon. Harry Hook himself may be the only one who finds her madness enchanting. Will Ruby find her self falling for the rugged pirate, or will the roses bleed red?
Prologue / Chapter 1 / Chapter 2: The Pool of Tears
It only made perfect, logical sense that Uma, Gil, and Harry managed to weasel their way into every single one of Ruby's classes. Suddenly she wasn't a person made of stone hidden in the back of the class anymore. She had friends. Friends that legitimately either didn't care that she was mildly insane or refused to believe she was crazy at all. Surprisingly, Ruby found herself enjoying her newfound gang of friends.
At first, Ruby thought her little mind palace she enjoyed in Art 101 would be ultimately ruined, but she enjoyed teaching Uma and Harry how to paint and keeping Gil from drinking another bottle of paint. (He claimed the white paint was milk, and continued to drink it all until he got sick.) The boys had even joined the Tourney team, and even though Harry dissed the game everyday, Ruby knew he liked having a way to expel his own frustrations.
Ruby and Uma became close friends after they shared their mutual hatred of Mal. The purple haired girl had given a particularly nasty glare at Uma when Ruby asked if she had disliked Uma.
"Dislike?" Uma had scoffed. "That girl hates me. And trust me when I say the feeling is mutual."
"What happened between you two? Does it...is that why you were crying that day?"
Uma had nodded and told the story of how she earned the nickname Shrimpy from the daughter of Maleficent. The normally calm and collected pirate even broke down into tears, and Ruby had held her in the comfort of Uma's dorm room, consoling the girl like she had wanted to years ago.
But that had been weeks ago. Uma had now made Ruby an official part of her pirate crew, not considering the fact the majority of her crew was still on the Isle, but that didn't seem to bother Uma. The two girls were sitting on the bleachers, waiting for the Tourney game between Auradon Prep and Hogwarts High to start.
"Goddd it's so hot," Uma complained, fanning herself with her hand.
"It's a good thing I told you to ditch all the leather. You'd be fried like a walrus in winter by now if you were still wearing it," Ruby replied, giggling at the thought of a walrus covered in snow.
Uma snorted, "Right. You'd think this place being full of magic, someone would come up with a way to fix the heat."
"Exactly," Ruby nodded in agreement. "This weather is not the best for tea time. Unless it's iced tea. But then it wouldn't really be tea at all would it?"
Uma made a confused yet amused face and jumped in surprise when Auradon's band began to play, trumpets and drums echoing across the field as the Tourney team ran out. The crowd began to cheer and clap, but of course Ruby and Uma were mainly cheering for Harry and Gil.
The game had gone by quickly, Auradon beating Hogwarts High to a pulp, winning 16-3. Of course it was only possible for Ben and Jay to score because Harry was basically mauling down every enemy in his way.
As Uma and Ruby stepped off the bleachers to go find Harry and Gil, they were stopped by Evie, ever present smile on her face.
"Hey!" She greeted cheerfully. "Sorry to bother you, but Ruby I was wondering if you were free Friday?"
"Next Friday?" Ruby cocked her head in question. What was Friday? It would be the 24th of the month then, the only thing she would be doing was-
The 24th.
Friday was Ruby's birthday.
She told only Evie of her dislike for her birthday last year. Why was she bringing it up? Did she tell anyone else?
"U-um, no I wasn't really planning anything I guess. Why?"
"Just checking! Toodaloo!" Evie skipped off, locking her elbow with Doug as the band walked back towards the school.
"What's Friday?" Uma asked Ruby, shaking the girl from her thoughts.
"Oh, nothing important." Ruby dismissed the question. It wasn't a lie.
Just then, Harry and Gil ran up, helmets off and sweating from the game. Ruby somewhat hated her mind for even thinking it, but she couldn't help but find Harry even more attractive after he finished a game. Something about how his muscles glistened, and his blue eyes seemed brighter with the rush of the game-
They were looking at her. Shoot. She had been ogling at Harry for what felt like ages that her mind blocked out any and all conversation around her.
"W-what?" Ruby asked, ignoring the way she felt her cheeks flush when Harry smirked slightly. It was as if the pirate could read her thoughts. How scary that would be.
"Uma just told us about the special Friday," Gil told her, still exuberant even after an exhausting game.
Ruby flashed Uma a glare. Clearly her dismissal of the day didn't work on the girl.
"Tell us, Heart," Ruby felt an involuntary shiver at Harry's given nickname for her. "Wha's so special about that particular Friday, hmm?"
"Honestly, you guys, it's nothing. 'A tea party with iced tea instead of tea tea' nothing," Ruby covered her nose in mock disgust. "Now you two need a serious shower. You smell worse than the freezing walrus."
Jay ran up to the group, having been talking to the coach, and gave a pat on the back to Gil. "Nice work, man! When you dodged that guy in the second half, dude that was epic!" he exclaimed.
"Dude, no way! When you spun off of Ben to make that shot, that was so incredible!" Gil jumped with excitement.
"We totally deserve a celebratory drink for that win. Whaddya say, man? You down?"
"Definitely, dude! I'll catch up with you guys later," Gil said before running off with Jay.
Harry scoffed, and ran a hand through his hair. "Hones'ly. 'S like I didn't just batter down half the enemy's team to win. I LIKE DRINKING TOO!" He yelled towards the boys, though they were already out of earshot.
Ruby giggled while Uma rolled her eyes at her first mate. "You can drink in the shower for all I care, you really smell like dog."
"Ughhh fineeee," Harry complained head thrown back in defeat as they walked back to the dormitories.
It was ritual by now for the gang to meet up in one of their dorm rooms at least once a week for no particular reason other than to be stupid in the confines of their own rooms. Ruby's curiosity had gotten the better of her, and she actually brought four iced teas for the group. Not a one of them enjoyed, especially Gil, who's knack of liking everything had its limits. Uma had the marvelous idea of sneaking into the kitchen, it was late after all and no one would be there. Needless to say, the school food storage needed to be replenished, and soon.
Thursday classes had come and gone, and Ruby's illusion of her vase of roses singing a sweet tune was broken by knocks at her door. She had expected Harry, of all people, but was quite surprised by Ben's form in her doorway. It had been a while since she and been had talked; ever since Uma and the boys showed up and Ben having to take on more kingly activities, there hadn't been much time for the two friends to hang out. Ruby instantly felt guilt at not having at least tried to find time to hang out with her first friend.
"Ben! Hey, what, uh, what can I do for ya?" Ruby asked, pushing down her guilt and putting a smile on her face. Her hair probably looked a mess, and her clothes were most definitely wrinkled, but she knew Ben really didn't care.
"Hey, Ruby. It's been a short while, hasn't it?" He greeted her back. He seemed kind of nervous, his hands wringing together in front of him.
Ruby's guilt instantly resurfaced. "Ben, I'm so sorry-"
"There's nothing to be sorry about, Ruby. I actually came to ask you something," He said, smiling at the shorter girl.
Ruby raised an eyebrow in question.
"I was wondering if you could paint something for me?" Ben asked her, hope in is voice.
"Oh, OH. Yeah, of course, sure!" Ruby paced back into her room excitedly, images already running through her head of what she could paint for Auradon's king. "What were you thinking? Because I've been having this idea of like a half beast thing that-"
"No actually, Ruby uh," Ben's eyes flicked towards Ruby hesitantly, as if he was scared of her. That's odd, Ruby thought.
"I was hoping you could paint Mal for me," Ben finished.
Ruby stopped her mind's ideas and stood frozen on her rug. She looked at Ben somewhat accusingly. "What."
"I know, I know," Ben said, arms out and moving to stand in front of Ruby. "I know you two don't really get along but I want to do something nice for her and she mentioned to me about how all the royalty here have their portraits hanging everywhere and I thought it would be nice if I could do that for her and well you're the best painter there is Ruby and I just-"
"Ben, oh my aces, calm down!" Ruby told him, effectively stopping Ben's rambling. She put a hand to her head. She did have a hatred for Mal, but Ben had tried hard to be Ruby's friend since she was first brought to Auradon. She couldn't just tell him no.
She sighed, "Okay. Okay, I'll do it. But I'm going to need a picture or something. I don't find myself gazing misty eyed at your girlfriend all that much, Mr Benjamin."
Ben had already turned to walk back out of Ruby's dorm. "No, it's okay I get it- wait, you'll do it?" Ruby nodded. "Oh, this is great! Here-" he pulled out his wallet and handed her a picture of said girlfriend. "Thank you so much Ruby. You really are the best."
Ben pulled her in for a hug as she answered with a smile. "No problem."
Friday morning Ruby rolled out of bed sluggishly, gasping when she saw the time. She dressed quickly in a simple red top with black jeans, and threw her long hair up in a pony tail before practically running to her first class. As her classes rolled on, she tried not to think about what shenanigans Evie was up to.
Ever since Ruby had moved to Auradon, her father saw her birthday as a spectacular event. He tried throwing her birthday parties, but of course no one would come. He tried taking her out for ice cream, but it was unbearably hot and the ice cream melted. Birthday's just weren't meant for Ruby. In her time on the Isle, birthdays were treated as every other day, nothing special in it whatsoever. She used to wake up hoping her mother would have something special for her, but Ruby was greeted with the same fear as always. Ruby was used to this, and never saw any importance in her birthday anyway. After all, it was just like every other unbirthday, wasn't it? In her first year at Auradon Prep, Evie had questioned her, claiming it odd a whole year had gone and she never celebrated on any single day. Of course, Evie found out the truth, but Ruby eventually convinced her to not make a big deal out of it, and made the blue haired girl promise to not tell a soul. "No one would want to come to a party for me anyway," Ruby had claimed. "They'll be too scared I'll go off with their tiny hatless heads."
Evidently, this year, Evie had different plans. And Ruby was slightly scared.
Ruby had barely been in her room for five minutes after classes were finished before Evie materialized at her door.
"You, my wonderful friend, are coming with me," the overly excited girl said.
Ruby blindly threw her bag on her bed as Evie grabbed her arm and tugged her along to Evie's dorm. Ruby marveled at the clothes along one of the walls; Evie's room was always filled with outfits she had designed, and they were always incredible.
"Any particular reason you dragged me to your fashion show of a room, E?" Ruby asked, feeling the silk of white skirt with black patterns.
"Yes, actually," Evie answered, grabbing Ruby by the shoulders and spinning her around.
The sight of the dress in front of Ruby made every coherent thought leave her brain.
She must have gasped, or made some sort of awestruck face because Evie smiled and wrapped an arm around Ruby's shoulders. "Do you like it?" the blue haired girl asked.
"Evie," Ruby started, taking slow steps toward the wonder of a ball gown and cautiously ran a hand over the intricate rose design on the front. "I honestly don't have the words. I think the Hare must have put some sort of drug in my tea today. I can't- Evie this is beautiful."
"Good. I'm glad you love it!" Evie clapped her hands excitedly. She walked to the back of the dress and unzipped it from the mannequin. "Now let's get it on you."
"Yes, let's- wait, what?" Ruby shook from her daze.
"Come on, no time to lose. Undress, Ruby!" Evie exclaimed.
Despite Ruby's confusion, she really wanted to wear the gorgeous dress. Maybe this was what Evie was planning. To make a gown for Ruby. Any thoughts about her birthday disappeared once Ruby saw herself in the dress.
Evie danced around her, making last minute adjustments while Ruby gaped at herself in the mirror. Evie stepped away, looking proud. "Give us a spin," she said.
Ruby lifted the sides of the dress slightly and twirled. The gown was light and it swirled around her legs as she came to a stop. Ruby couldn't help the huge smile on her face. "This is so amazing, Evie," she turned to her friend, "but what exactly is this for?"
Evie's eyes sparkled mischievously. "You'll see. Now come, sit."
Ruby did as told, and watched as Evie deftly pinned a braid to the crown of Ruby's hair and brushed the tangles out of the rest. It was when Evie placed a small crown inlaid with a heart-shaped ruby that Ruby became nervous. "Evie, really, what's going on?" she hated how her voice shook with the question.
"Put on these shoes, and let's go find out," Evie answered, handing Ruby a pair of dark red heels.
Ruby quickly slipped on the heels and tried not to trip as Evie rushed her out of the door. She led the girl to what was unmistakably the school's ball room. Ben was waiting outside the doors, dressed immaculately in a deep blue suit. Evie gave him a nod before disappearing, not before smiling widely at Ruby.
"Ben, maybe you'll give me some answers?" Ruby looked up at her friend, and saw the same glint she had seen in Evie's eyes. Ruby was hopeful, clearly Ben wouldn't keep her in the dark, would he? But her hope simmered as Ben kept his mouth loyally shut.
Suddenly, Fairy Godmother opened the doors. "It's time!"
Ben gave a bow to Ruby, gesturing towards the open doors with a hand, "Shall we?"
Ruby hooked her hand onto Ben's outstretched elbow, and he led her through the doors. Ruby put a hand to her mouth to stifle another gasp as they walked out to the top of the ballroom steps.
The filled room collectively yelled "Happy birthday!" upon seeing Ruby enter. She couldn't believe it. There were actual people here, for her.
"Ben, what-"
"Welcome, dear Ruby, to your birthday party," Ben bowed once more. Ruby caught sight of Uma, Gil and Harry at the bottom of the stairs, but her eyes found themselves stuck on Harry.
He was dressed like a gentleman but still looked ruggedly handsome with his black tousled hair and smudged eyeliner, his hook hanging from his belt loop. He winked at Ruby, shamelessly devouring how gorgeous she looked in her ball gown.
Ruby would have been stuck at the top of the stairs all day had Evie not once again materialized next to her, dressed in a beautiful blue gown. She grabbed Ruby's hand. "Come on, it's much more fun at the bottom of these stairs," she whispered to her. They made it to Uma and the boys on the ballroom floor, Evie leaving Ruby with a hug and a "Happy birthday, Ruby" before disappearing to find Doug. Ruby turned towards her gang of friends accusingly.
"Did you guys know?" She asked.
"Since las' week, Heart," Harry answered, ever present smirk on his face.
"Yeah, Evie told us the whole deal and had us outfits made. I honestly didn't think I'd look this good in a dress," Uma said. She was right. Her sea green dress was really alluring.
"This place is so amazing, there's tables full of food!" Gil exclaimed, charming in his suit.
"Guys, I-"
"It's okay, Ruby," Uma assured her, giving her a hug. "It's your first birthday party. Let's have some fun," she smiled and winked at her friend. Ruby hesitantly smiled back.
Suddenly trumpets blared as Ben appeared on the overhead balcony, Mal at his side.
"Thank you everyone for coming! As you all know, today is our very own Ruby Hearts' birthday! I think it's about time we get this party started!" He announced, earning cheers from the crowd.
Ruby just stared, silent and still shocked at the whole ordeal. Were these people really here for her?
"'S alright, Heart," Harry's unmistakable voice whispered behind her. His breath was hot on her ear as he spoke, "You deserve this, lass."
She turned around and saw a genuine smile playing at Harry's lips that somehow eased her own fear. She smiled broadly at the pirate. "Thank you, Harry," she whispered back.
"Whoooo!" Gil's cheer broke the moment, the boy jumped in and began dancing wildly to the music. Laughing, Ruby and Harry joined in, Uma reluctantly joining the sway.
The night flew by, song after song, the gang stayed dancing together the entire time. Ruby could tell it was late in the night, but no one at the party seemed to care. She felt a poke at her shoulder and turned to see Carlos, Jay, and Evie. She gave each of them a hug as they wished her happy birthday.
"Evie, you know I'm so thankful for this," Ruby started, as she waved to Carlos and Jay who were whisked away by the crowd. "But a whole ball?"
"You know I would only have the best for you," She answered, giving Ruby a smile. "Besides, it wasn't just my idea."
Ruby's curiosity was instantly piqued. "What do you mean?"
"Well, Ben and I might have let it slip to Uma and Harry about your birthday coming up and how we really wanted to do something for you and Harry came up with this marvelous idea to have a ball since you're technically a princess so Uma and her gang helped us set all this up and we invited literally the entire school and-"
"Whoa, whoa wait," Ruby interrupted her. "This was Harry's idea?"
Evie nodded right as a slow song started. She was pulled away by Doug but winked at Ruby when she noticed Harry showed up at the girl's side.
"Ruby," Harry greeted, dipping into a bow, amused look on his face. "Will ye do me the 'onor of dancin' with me?" He held out his hand for her to take.
Ruby knew her face was flushed. She was still processing how this was Harry's idea, and what did Evie say about him saying she was a princess? She didn't know if her brain would function enough to be so close to Harry Hook, gazing into his eyes as she danced with him to the slow tune-
Ruby blinked out of her daze. She could do this. Her hand met Harry's outstretched one and his smirk grew to a smile as he pulled her closer. Her breath hitched when his other hand came to her waist, and he immediately pulled her into the dance steps.
"Don't tell me Harry Hook's been taking dancing lessons, now?" Ruby questioned amusingly, fighting down her blush.
Harry spun Ruby with the waltz, pulling her closer so that she could feel his breath when he spoke. "'S almost like sword fighting, really."
A blur of blue captured Ruby's eye, and she craned her neck to peer behind Harry. Uma stood, watching the two dance and Ruby almost missed the wink she gave her. At the food table behind Uma, Ruby caught sight of Gil chugging down the entire punch bowl and Jay seemingly egging him on. She snorted and turned her gaze back to Harry, feeling bold.
"So, Mr. Hook," Ruby danced her fingers up Harry's arm. His jaw tensed ever so slightly. "What's this I hear about you planning this whole thing?"
Harry's ears immediately turned pink. "Well, er," he cleared his throat. "Uma an' Gil came up with the plan too, ye know."
Harry let go of Ruby's hand to come rest at her waist and she wrapped her arms around his neck. The waltz was over by now, but neither seemed to notice or care. "How kind," she looked up at the pirate. "You know, this party is kind of for you too," she said.
"How so, Heart?"
"Well, it's my birthday, but that means it's also you're unbirthday! And really that's just as worthy as celebrating in my opinion." Ruby's tone was joking, but Harry's eyes were piercing as they held each other. He moved his head so that his mouth was next to Ruby's ear. Her arms tightened around him, fingers playing with the hair at the nape of his neck.
"Ye've no idea how beautiful ye are, Ruby," Harry whispered, husky voice making a shiver course through Ruby's body. "All these other goons are jealous of my own little princess,"
Her breathing hitched, and she pulled her head back to peer at Harry's face. His eyes seemed filled with that same sensation Ruby felt but couldn't quite name. His striking blue eyes darted to her lips as his left hand cupped her face. Ruby was quite aware of the almost nonexistent space between them, of the erratic beating of both of their hearts. She whispered his name, not believing her eyes as the moment played out.
"UGH! WATCH WHERE YOU'RE GOING!" a girl's voice yelled, causing Ruby and Harry to jump apart. They shared a look and made their way to were the commotion was.
There was a circle around Uma and Mal, the former's dress covered in punch.
"You ran into me!" Mal yelled at Uma. "Maybe you should watch where you're going!"
"Look, I know time in Boradon has made you insane, but I would think you know how to walk," Uma snapped back, giving up at wiping off punch from her dress.
Mal scoffed. "If you're so uncomfortable here then you should have stayed in that sandbox where you belong!"
In the blink of an eye Uma pounced on Mal, snarling with her arms outstretched. A full on girl fight broke out, hair being pulled and dresses being torn. It lasted all of two seconds before Ben and Gil rushed in pulling the two girls apart. They continued to yell insults at each other, but all Ruby could see was the floor covered in ice. She watched as every step and stomp of feet caused it to move to the brink of shattering. Ruby had had enough.
"STOP IT! BOTH OF YOU!" She yelled, effectively surprising and silencing everyone in the room. "It's PUNCH! You're not dying and if you don't stop this petty little fight then the frozen floor with collapse and we'll all be eaten by the Jabborwock!"
"Just as insane as ever! You should have stayed with your crazy mother," Mal scoffed before marching out, Ben casting an apologetic look before running after her. Uma tried to apologize to Ruby, but she couldn't hear a thing over the cracking ice.
"Just-..no," was all Ruby could say before she too left the ballroom. She couldn't make it to her room before the tears came.
She fell down onto her bed, letting the water flow. She knew a party was a horrible idea. No one wanted to be there for her, they were there because it was just a party. Maybe Mal was right. Maybe she should have stayed on the Isle with her mother. Maybe she would have learned how to scare everyone away and build a wall around her heart, so maybe then she wouldn't be hurt as easily.
After what felt like ages, Ruby heard a knock at her door. She sniffled as whoever it was walked in and sat next to her on the bed.
"Tears don't belong on that pretty face, lass," Harry said, pulling Ruby up and wiping said tears from her face. She sniffled as he did so.
"I just don't understand, Harry."
"I know, Heart," he said, sad to see her so upset. "Some things are jus' too hard to understand."
Ruby nodded, her mind just registering her sore feet and legs.
"Oh! I, erm, I've got something for ye, Heart," Harry said, changing the mood of the conversation with just a singe sentence. He had something for her?
"What is it?" Ruby asked, rubbing an eye.
"Well, I've been wanting to give it back to ye for a while, but it jus' never seemed like the right moment," Harry told her, ears turning pink as he pulled out something from behind his back.
It was a little stuffed rabbit.
Ruby gasped, new tears forming at her eyes as she recognized her old toy, the one she had lost that fated day.
"Look at ye, getting all happy over a wee toy," Harry joked, happy to see the light in Ruby's eyes again.
"Harry Hook, you thief!" Ruby exclaimed, tackling the boy in a hug. He fell back on the bed, arms wrapping around Ruby's form.
They laid on the bed holding each other for a while, Harry's hand making mindless patterns on Ruby's scarred arm. Ruby had never been more happy than she was in his arms. What is happening? She thought.
"D'ye think they're mad?" Harry asked.
Ruby wasn't sure who exactly he was talking about. "They can't help it," she answered anyway. "We're all a bit mad here."
