the "how to write a rec post or masterpost" post

i promised this a few days ago, so here it is: my brief guide on how to pitch yourself or someone else on tumblr to other people in such a way that they might actually click on it! this is what i've found is the most effective way to format a set of fic recs or your own masterpost will typically be, at least to me. this is meant for when you're listing multiple fics in one post, typically intending to help a reader choose one they want to read!

the biggest thing to remember is a rec post or masterpost is a tool for a potential reader. therefore, you want to include the information they need in the easiest-to-read way possible.

first off: if you are trying to list or rec more than one fic, do not use the tumblr 'link' embed function. like, you CAN, but ao3 link embeds get ugly when you have more than about one of them. instead, do an in-line link, like this! this will make a longer post much easier to read.

next, with each link, include the following information: a brief summary (it doesn't have to be the same as the summary/pitch you used for ao3, and probably shouldn't be; instead, a one or two sentence description of what the fic is about is best), the fandom it's in, a sense of the fic's length, and rating. (note that you DON'T need to include all the tags and trigger warnings--if someone is intrigued enough to read it, they'll click on the link, and from there they will see the tags and trigger warnings. this should only be enough information to get someone interested.)

finally, ESPECIALLY if it's a rec post, include at least one sentence about why someone should read it. why are you recommending it? this is different from the summary; if a summary of the fic is "joe hills gets stuck in a time loop", the sentence about why someone should read it shouldn't be "haven't you ever wanted to see joe in a time loop?"

the point of rec posts--and indeed promoing on tumblr--is that people trust word of mouth more than they trust a random summary. so give them that word of mouth! if it's a rec post, say something like "it's a fic that made me cry", or "i never thought i'd laugh so much at a fic until i read this", or "the character-voices are on point", or "i stayed up all night reading this". if it's your own master post. include something like "this might be the fic i'm the most proud of", or "this one is great if you like joe hills and enjoy tragedy", or "this one was an experiment in style". something that is NOT just further summary of the fic, but instead describes a good reason to read it!

so, for example, an entry in my own hypothetical master post might look like this:

to convey a certain brilliance, hermitcraft, T, 21k. joe hills and zombiecleo slowly, and through many death loops, drag their way out of their collapsed base to try to survive after a lunar apocalypse. this is the second hermitcraft fic i ever wrote and i wrote it before we knew how moon's big would end, inspired by super hostile; people still tell me it has some of their favorite joe characterization.

and an entry in a hypothetical rec post i might write could look like this:

the sky weighs heavy tonight by mawofthemagnetar, hermitcraft, T, 79k. an ensemble fic in which a plane being flown by keralis and zedaph crashes, and in which the world is still recovering from the scars of a deadly war. i LOVE snake's writing, and this fic was basically designed to capture me specifically; it has cool worldbuilding, body horror, PLANES, a really cool aircraft investigation plot, one of the best-executed ensemble casts in the fandom, and a fun tone! it's a fairly easy read even given it's length, too; if you haven't read it, you absolutely should.

my only remaining recommendation is that if you're writing a LONG fic rec post or a LONG masterpost, you organize it by categories. these categories can be whatever is most useful for you--by relationship tag, by fandom, by ship or not ship, by genre, etc., it's mostly just to make scanning through the post a little easier.

and hopefully this is helpful for some folks out there! if people are interested i can also do one on "how to promo my individual fic", i also have observations and opinions on that.

Marvel. Or DC?

I have liked them both and disliked them both, at different points in my life, for a variety of reasons. At the moment, I'm not paying attention to them at all.

When I was a kid, I was all about Xmen and Fantastic Four from Marvel and, Batman and Justice League (Marv Wolfman's run in the late 80s) from DC. Never really cared for Superman. The 1967 Spider-Man was awesome as a cartoon, but I rarely read the comic book.

In the 70s, I was only allowed one comic per week, usually picked out from whatever was left on that spinning rack at the drugstore. So more often than not, I ended up with something like House of Secrets or House of Mystery or one of those horror anthologies that didn't need me to read the issues before or after, like the serialized superhero comics did. I got a lot of replay value from those books.

In the 80s, I had my own money and the ability to drive myself to comic conventions, and that's when I fell in love with Sandman, Watchmen, pretty much the entire Prestige Format that became Vertigo. I recall feeling like Marvel was for kids, then, and DC was serious. I was only 16, so take that for what it's worth.

But speaking of being 16, I'm gonna focus on Batman for a sec. I loved Batman 89, and I think all the efforts to make a Batman movie ever since have fallen short in ways I couldn't predict back then. It's gotten better with age and by comparison, for me. Michael Keaton is my favorite Batman, the way Christian Bale is my favorite modern Bruce Wayne (they both pale next to Pure. West. if anyone asks me).

The OG Batman series is maybe my favorite series of all time not called Star Trek or The Prisoner, and the 1966 movie is my favorite of all the Batman movies. Of course I love the animated series, and I get to be Blue Beetle in Brave and the Bold, so that's pretty awesome and its whole own thing.

Turning to the current moment, with rare exception, all the MCU and DCU movies do nothing for me. I thought I must have been missing something, so tried really hard to give them a chance to knock me out. I watched as many of the MCU movies as I could stand, and I just felt exhausted and bored by all of it, by the time I got to ... I can't even remember. Something with maybe Thanos and Ant-Man? I felt like it was a big, complicated mess of fan service and meetings that could have been e-mails, resulting in in a stew full of interesting ingredients that have all blended together into a flavorless paste. I do enjoy all the James Gunn movies, though, even if Chris Pratt is the worst Chris, because James always centers the characters and their conflicts, then uses the action and stunts to support the story.

I feel like a lot of this sounds harsh, but even Star Wars, my favorite movie when I was a kid, has grown into something I don't recognize or care about. I'm old. I know what I like and what I don't like. I'm not patient like I once was, and it's clear I'm not the person those studios want in the theatre, anyway. I could make that joke about how it's the children who are wrong, but I accept that I am not in the demo, and I am genuinely happy for everyone who loves the spectacle and the experience of seeing those films with an enthusiastic audience. I just won't be there with you, but you can find me in the parking lot, yelling at a cloud.

What makes a tlt au work for you? Do u have any favourites out there/that you’ve thought of?

its hard because it can go down to the writing! i have a huge bias for things that put focus on the characters acting awful and driving the story forward- if a story has a plot thats great, but its the difference between "gideon and harrow keep meeting up at parties and fall a little bit in love every time" and "gideons angry she lost her childhood to the cult so she attends a party with the tridentarii to shotgun adolescent experiences, and harrowhark, frustrated that gideon is pulling on her metaphorical leash, follows to stalk her". the former retains a 5+1 fic format and is more bite-size, while the latter puts more focus into their growth as characters. im not great at articulating what i like specifically, but ill put my favorite fics below:

what if nona was dogs tugs at my heart: its post-canon, slice-of-life, and has a unique concept (said in the title). i judged a book by its cover because i thought the premise seemed too silly at first but ive been made a fool and its pet clown. it feels so true to nona the way its about all the things nona loves and how she gets to explore the world through new eyes. i love the way it explores characters softening up and getting hurt through a third person pov

we have always lived in the apartment by @thatneoncrisis i keep saying this but for the love of GOD guys this au is so good it makes me cry and feel such a deep catharsis from it. it takes gideon and harrow and the ninth as a cult and explores their struggle to adapt to a modern society when noone ever gets a break (WOW ITS JUST LIKE IN REAL L-). quinn writes the sides of griddlehark i think go overlooked in fanfic often: their codependency, their tendency to lash out when theyre defensive, their mutual paranoia and different coping mechanisms, harrows psychosis and gideons bitterness, their relationships to each other as being the only other person who really understands what the other suffered through. god. i feel lightheaded.

"but SAM, i dont like angst but i want to see this writing!" read gap between a tragedy and a comedy

"SAM, i also like when gideon and harrow are horrible because theyre maladjusted teenagers! but i want more antics where the characters drive things forward over angst!" read whats eating gideon nav

you just aint receiving is one of my FAVORITE modern aus of all time (and i heavily recommend the authors other fics as well!) if you really want to see how much i love this fic the fact that my comments take up the entire phone screen probably says a lot. its hard to put it concisely: it keeps harrows air of misanthropy and cruelty but redefines it as the result of her upbringing and personal struggle to live in a university while dealing with a backpack of mental illness and frustration. it changes gideons personality as the daughter of john gaius in a way that makes sense having her grow up with johns middling parenting skills and getting everything she ever wanted (connecting it back to kirionas personality in ntn!). it brings in side characters (specially palamedes. my beautiful boy palamedes) in ways that compliment harrow and gideon but not so obviously that they only exist to be supports. they have their own lives and ideals. its a modern au that brings in the boiling politics of johns cult uprising once again in a really novel way

semi charmed kinda life by @griddlebait. jesuchristo and all his middle names this fic is GREAT for you if you want a slice of life, coming of age type modern au that explores what its like for gideon and harrow if they actually got the space to see who theyd become outside of the stifling fate tlt has for them. as far as modern aus go im usually very hesitant to read them because im afraid modernizing the characters takes features away from their core but i really love and respect the way the author treats the 69ers with care and draws distinct lines that shows me how their grow and change while keeping a line to the anchor. also they write HIDEOUS (complimentary) PINING. DISGUSTING. some of these chapters were so chock full of dyke drama that they made me nauseous and whimsical. i think once a friend said this fic felt like if gh could be reincarnated and i like that descriptor a lot

til the cows come home is another postcanon fic that made me feel sick and crybabyish about it- i would definitely recommend it if you want to explore a happier ending with griddlehark! with this and what if nona was dogs the thing i like most about them is that they mix up vulnerability with pain and fear, so it feels more lifelike that way if that makes sense. i lost my taste in fluff fics over time but when its interspersed with struggle and characters causing problems because they cant cope with themselves it feels much more earnest and raw

I love when a story introduces a few separate and seemingly unrelated elements, and then gathers them all together in a neat conclusion that's even more satisfying because it's kind of unexpected. Homestuck does this on a really small scale - for example, the Sassacre book crushing the smoke pellets on p.96 bringing together John's sylladex accidents, the father-son prankster's gambit, and the two previous mentions of the Sassacre book's ability to crush things. But this is my favorite example yet.

A pattern is established with John and Rose that each character gets a command formatted as [strange noise/action] like a [creature] and [bodily function] on your [furniture]. Neither of these are relevant.

Dave's command is 'Bleat like a goat and piss on your turntable'. (p.315) but Dave 'would never consider allowing any fluid even remotely resembling urine to touch your beloved TURNTABLES.'

John gets a Little Monsters movie poster for his birthday and messages Dave about his favorite scene, where a monster pees in a kid's juice.

Later in the story, we see Dave find the bottle of apple juice in his closet that he found at the same moment that he was inspired to message John.

The Sburb Beta discs are established early on as a coveted item in the world of Homestuck, its importance increasing until it becomes the only item that can save the world.

Dave, who had a copy of this game before its true importance was established, reveals that he has lost it, and that 'its a stupid story and id rather not talk about it shit be embarrassing yo' (p.294)

All this comes together very delightfully when Dave finds himself unable to drink his unopened bottle of apple juice, unsettled by John's suggestion that a monster could reseal the bottle after pissing in it. He puts the juice back in his sylladex and immediately picks up another item, which forcefully ejects the juice, explaining the story of how Dave's game discs got damaged and fulfilling the prophecy of allowing a fluid resembling urine to touch his turntables.

This comic is basically engineered in a lab to be like one of those photo galleries of tiles that perfectly interlock and candy that's arranged in a perfect color gradient, it scratches the same itch. It's a storytelling technique that has infinite potential, but only works if it's spot on.

The Dave characterization here is really striking. Little Monsters is a movie where monsters under kids' beds are 100% real supernatural entities that make use of weird spatial/dimensional rules to play mean pranks on kids. Despite his obvious coolness and mastery of irony, and how dismissive he is of John's movie based interests. Dave can't shake the part of his brain that's like 'but what if monsters are real, what if there's one under my bed too'. I think he's like Rose in terms of meticulously constructing a personality that feels more 'adult', but their more childish aspects still slipping through the cracks (and nothing shows this better than their conversation on p.333 where they sound like they're rehearsing dialogue for the stage).

I've been thinking about John embodying characters from all his favorite movies, but maybe Dave is actually the Brian Stevenson parallel, right down to the sunglasses.

Someone Wicked (60k, E)

What can I say??? I love this fic. Maybe its gauche to say my most popular fic is also my favorite, but it is my favorite. I loved every bit of this fic, i loved writing it and sharing it. I like the thoughts it stirred in me about intimacy and religious trauma and sex work and shame and disability. I like that there's a little bit of my artist heart in there, and a lot of my tenderness. I like that it gripped people, and I liked the conversations it started. I really loved writing this version of the boys, and I miss them all the time.

One December Night (11k, M)

This fic took me by surprise, I can say now that I was dealing with the death of my grandfather when I wrote it and I feel like, it really encapsulated how that first Christmas without him felt. Not bad. But melancholy, and it was the first Christmas where I really felt my age, and the weight of all the people who weren't there anymore that had really defined my growing up. And grief is such a small part of the story, but I think it seeps into everything else. Lost time and second chances, and endings and new beginnings. Anyway, I really like it, and I like that it seemed to emotionally resonate with people without being too sad.

What Lies Behind Doorways (10k, M)

My first CO fic, and my first foray back into writing after nearly a decade. It's interesting that I started with this exploration of trauma where Snowbaz was really more of an afterthought, because it's just all about how we keep our pain hidden, from both others and ourselves, and the way it wends into our lives. Also contains my favorite Penny and Baz scene in any fic I've written.

We Still Bloom (18k, T)

For a long time this was absolutely my favorite thing I'd written, and it's still up there. Not because I think it's the best plot or best romance, I was just really, really proud of the format. I came up with a linear version of this story, and then after mulling over it for such a long time I realized that the question I wanted to answer here was "why do they love each other?" and "why would baz rather die than stop loving simon, even if he can't be with him?" And I answered that question through a series of flashbacks. And I wasn't sure it would work, but based on the reception I think it did, and I'm just really proud of that.

The Mirrors that Hold Us (70k, E)

It was hard to choose the last one because it was a toss-up between it and Your Fragile Bones Are Mine but I realized that 1- I like YFBAM for similar reasons to We Still Bloom, so that's represented already. I love the non-linear storytelling. I like the way the past and present play off each other. But, then 2- I think there's too much space between me having written Mirrors and it's made me so much more critical of it, but I still think that a few things from that fic in particular are some of my best writing (which predictably deals with timeline shenanigans and playing two separate timelines off each other) And I should be proud of it. And grateful for it, because it was the fic that helped me meet and connect with so many of my current fandom friends. Mirrors is also my most ambitious plot, which isn't saying a lot because I tend to lean into focusing on relationship building over anything else, but it's worth noting. I will always love this fic.

He does find your airheadedness a bit annoying, and a bit cute as well. 

While you are more affectionate than he is, he's enjoying what you give. Hugs, cuddles, kisses, everything he's willing to take from you.

Luca was still a bit shocked that he was dating you. You were so kind and sweet to everyone, that he didn’t know if you liked him at first.

He's a bit surprised when you compliment him at first, but he grows to really enjoy them.

Luca occasionally gives you gifts, and he loves that you love them.

When he finds out how strong you were during training, he falls deeper in love. He asks you to train more often.

He was even shocked at how good you were with fighting, and that you took down an anomaly by yourself.

Luca finds your eating habits endearing. He sits and talks to you while you do. It's the highlight of his week.

When he hears that you’re looking for a husband while you’re there, he's a bit shy, especially when he hears that you’re looking for a gentleman.

He finds your airhead moments cute and adorable. He does help you whenever that happens.

Luca loves affection, he's mostly a behind closed door kind of person, save for a few kisses and handholding. He loves cuddling you and giving you kisses, though it's only when you’re hanging out in your room or his.

Oh boy, this is a match made in hell. How did you two even get together?

He finds you annoying at first, and he still kind of does.

He teases you about your innocent and airhead personality.

He loves getting showered by the compliments you give him, and he lives for them.

He's using your kindness to do whatever he wants. He has you take him places to eat, and even makes you wear whatever he wants.

He gives you stuff occasionally, and he’s a bit astonished that you keep it and treasure it.

He is a bit astounded by your strength, especially when you arm wrestled a Vagastorm student and won. He is using that to flaunt you on his social media.

He’s so into you fighting though, he thinks about it every night. Most of it is you defending him against another student.

He is poking a bit of fun at you for how much you eat, but he really doesn’t mean it. If you end up crying from it, he's giving you affection to make you feel better.

He does tease you about your wish at finding a husband, but he's all giddy that it's him who you’re talking about.

Leo is so into affection he's practically attached to your hip. His hand is intertwined with yours, and he's placing kisses on your lips and cheeks. He's shameless about receiving your affection.

The power couple of Darkwick.

He’s a bit surprised at how kind you were, but quickly grows to enjoy it.

He’s also into you giving him compliments, and he thinks about them everyday.

Sho gives you lots of food and gifts, since it's still a habit from Leo. He's shocked that you keep and treasure all the little trinkets he gives you.

He finds your strength very hot, especially when you can beat most of the students in the Pit.

Sho loves watching you beat up anomalies, since you’re so graceful with your movements.

Sho is so overjoyed that you eat so much, he's giving you so much of his food for you to taste test. Your reaction to his good food keeps him going everyday.

He's a bit nervous when you mention that you want a husband, he tries to find ways to be a good husband for you in the future.

Sho loves affection and eats it up. Anything is on the table, hugs, kisses, cuddles, anything really. He's also got an arm around your shoulders while you walk.

When you and Haru got together is a mystery for everyone, since you've acted like a couple for the longest time.

You’re kind enough to help him at Jabberwock whenever you get the chance.

He gets a bit nervous when you start complimenting him randomly, but he grows to like it.

Haru gives you little gifts like keychains and sometimes cute animal socks.

He's a bit surprised when he sees you lift a heavy bag of animal food like it was nothing. He sometimes asks for you to help with moving anomalies and occasionally help remove things like rocks.

He's amazed at how amazing you are at fighting. He’s your personal cheerleader when he sees you.

Haru loves how you love food. He's watching you quickly slurp up your tenth bowl of ramen.

Haru doesn’t think he'd be a good husband, but you keep telling him that he would be, and how you want him to be your husband.

Haru takes all the affection he can when he gets the time. He's cuddling you, hugging you from behind, and planting kisses everywhere he can.

He was so floored at your kindness, that he thought about every interaction with you for weeks.

He's so in love with you and your kindness it's almost an obsession.

He’s nervous and timid whenever you compliment him, but he soaks it up like a sponge. 

Subaru gives you little pouches and jewelry, and gets surprised and starts blushing when he sees you wearing them.

He is so amazed by your strength that he thinks about you carrying him for a week. If he does ever ask, you'd happily carry him.

He's also in wonder whenever you fight anomalies, cause you’re so amazing at it.

Subaru loves eating with you, even giving you his share if you still feel hungry. 

Subaru is not that into affection, but he will give you little kisses, since he can’t hold you hand.

clown is able to purr, and he used to do it ALL the time whenever he was with someone he loved or is doing something he loves. though, once he gained the 'deadliest player' reputation, he begun to learn how to make it less noticeable. though, when hes with someone like branzy, you can hear it far more clearer. if theyre cuddling then oh boy is he going to purr up a storm

another clown hc that i really enjoy is that hes a doll. his limbs need constant maintenance in order to avoid having any oopsies in fights, building, and just to be comfortable. branzy helps clown to reach areas he cant reach. branzy often insists for clown to relax and to let him be the one cleaning him.

the bell finally rings signaling the end of class and the start of lunch and you can't bring yourself to stand up at all

shinsou is packing up next to you and doesn't really notice your unmoving form until he's slinging his backpack over his shoulder and looking down at you, expecting to see you packed and ready to go but you.... look like you're dying

you tell that to shinsou and urge him to just walk you to your dorm before you throw up on his shoes

he tells you that the teachers will think you're skipping class but you flutter your lashes at him (it probably looks more like you're seizing with how sick you are) and say something like "you'll cover for me, right?"

he rolls his eyes but. yes. he will cover for you. (he's whipped)

walks you to your dorm with an arm around your shoulders and you try not to collapse from both ur fever and the feeling of him walking so close

your delusions are running rampant in this HEAT

walks you alllll the way to your room and helps you lay back in your bed, pulls the covers over you and everything and your hands are TWITCHING because you wanna kiss him so bad but you'd end up puking all over him in this state

leaves your room for a bit and comes back with an ice pack wrapped in a towel to put on ur forehead and hot tea mixed w honey for when you're ready to drink something

puts the ice pack over ur forehead with a gentleness you've never seen from him before and you're like dying and clawing at the sheets trying not to scream with how in love u are with this guy

"you should go back to lunch man you're not gonna have enough time to eat"

"you're on the verge of death and that's what you're worried about"

stays with you until there's like 5 minutes left in the lunch period and he (unfortunately) HAS to leave

you're holding back a whine because yeah you feel guilty that he wasted his lunch time taking care of you but also... stay here forever?!?! duh?!?!

he notices the hesitant look in ur eyes while he stands up and takes his bag with him and sighs and rolls his eyes all fake-annoyed before leaning down and kissing your cheek and you hold back the urge to swing and punch him because he CAN'T JUST DO THAT AND THEN LEAVE???

you sleep for like the rest of the day and only wake up when you hear your door opening and smell soup and there's totally no way shinsou made that for you except he definitely did because when you ask about the soup his ears are flushed and you're literally gonna kiss him if he doesn't stop being so hot

overall shinsou would be so soft with you in his stupid sarcastic way and tease you about getting sick because he's a JERK but also a cutie so you let him get away with it

would definitely spend the rest of the day sleeping in your bed with you and then also get sick and force you to make him homemade soup (it's only fair, he argues)

i’ve been listening to/watching many (many, many) reactions to steven universe (because that’s what you do when you become newly obsessed with something. see what everyone else thinks about it and drive yourself mad) and it’s so interesting to see all the unique ways people tackle it and the common threads between them all.

there’s podcast recaps (pressure to over-analyze) vs youtube reactions (pressure to overreact). everyone knowing the show (yay) vs fans guiding newcomers (interesting) vs everybody being blind (often disastrous). don’t mind silly fun? they love the first season and amethyst’s character. told about how ~deep~ it gets and expecting only that? they love pearl and have to be dragged through the beginning. even how they chunk the episodes affects things—in watching episode-by-episode, people go the most mad as they try to squeeze meaning out of episodes they can’t yet appreciate until later (or are just. bad at analyses.). in chunks of two, people assume su will have much more horror after watching frybo and cat fingers back-to-back. and chunks of 5 are completely different too!

this only skims the surface. i can watch any episode of su and point out which jokes usually make people laugh, what people pick up on, and how their opinion of the situation reflects on whether they have mommy issues.

Remembering the toxic hellscape that was 2015-2019ish SU fandom and just how much hate the show got is really insane when you rewatch the show after it's been a while. Like the show is good what the hell were any of these people talking about

i love this shot bc like. yeah it's the culmination of the entire dark seeker saga. yeah they are forming a incomplete heart symbol at the crossroads of the keyblade graveyard which also conveniently includes a 3. yeah it kinda just looks cool in general.

but mostly it's because xion, dark riku, and vanitas are so comically short. and ansem and xemnas are way taller than everyone else, made even more noticeable because they're at the back. meanwhile the light side did not coordinate their outfits, especially axelea who, aside from being the tallest by far, looks like he's on the wrong team here. not to mention mickey
