"if the specimen I enjoyed of their hospitality be of the average kind, their lives must be pretty comfortable." good for the Bilders!
the polite, casually musing, "did I tell you to go to hell?" is so funny
Bilder hating Dracula on sight <3
ahhh it's good to hear Dracula's voice again. I mean I hate him, but, you know.
"I have made pets of several." Dracula making his little jokes again...
"he said, with a suspicious sort of modesty" hahaha, the delivery of this line was so funny
the Bilders laughing and literally going like "hohohohooo" is so funny. they're just 'gotcha!!!!!!' it's great
they are so playful. good for them
I love the long talk about how this wolf isn't clever or dangerous or anything... ending with "well, and I guess he could eat a baby" haha
Correspondent not liking that door being opened
it IS a shame that people are allowed to top their walls with broken bottles, I agree. I love how soft his voice gets on "come along, Berserker."
"the only exclusive information" hahaha yes, kudos to you, Correspondent
I like the doorbell noise quite a lot.
And the saw noise!
I never noticed them going round to the back of the house, but um. Probably a good choice before breaking in!
Ooh, the way Jack's voice falters on "but there was no sound... that we could hear"
I LOVE the music as they open the door and see Mrs. Westenra and Lucy
my immediate reaction was DO NOT BRING BRANDY
I do love that Jack tested it to make sure it wasn't poisoned though
"there was a gentleman who had come with a message from Mr. Holmwood." HERE HE ISSSS
god, that van Helsing doesn't have any hope for Lucy to survive this anymore. his only goal is to save her from vampirism
THE TWANG COMING IN WITH QUINCEY AHAHA
also the way Jack says "Quincey Morris" he is in love
oh god Art's voiiiiice
"Her struggle back into life was something frightful to see and hear." oh god
I love Jack's uncertainty upon reading Lucy's memorandum. The vulnerability in his voice as he asks van Helsing what it means, and if Lucy is mad.
Quincey's voice is so soft and sweet when he asks to have a talk with Jack.
Man, Jack really is running around all over the place isn't he.
"I don't want to shove myself in anywhere where I've no right to be;" this is why Quincey has been gone from the book for so long.
the music while Quincey describes the vampire bat
love the "royal lot of [manhood]" line, but also the whole bit before it, with Jack being so soft and full of sympathy for Quincey, more so than himself
"What took it out?" Quincey asking the real questions
Lucy's sobbing aches to listen to
"Some may not think it so sad for us," oof, she sounds kinda bitter. perhaps insinuations have already been made? not necessarily that they killed him but that this is mighty lucky for them isn't it/that they deliberately got close to him when he was dying in order to inherit
"my belief in him helps him to have a belief in himself." YES. YES.
Mina reaching out to Lucy for comfort and support... unaware that Lucy too is plunged into a nightmare
oh she sounds so agonized when she says the letter was unopened. oh ouch.

August 7th, 2020
Dear Evelynn, I'm glad my writing proved entertaining for you, though I don't know how eloquent I would have been if I were to broadcast myself in the moment. I think most of my brain would be too preoccupied by paying attention to say anything beyond the obvious. Still, thank you for your kind compliments. I hope we can catch a few games together during the next school year, perhaps then I could be your own personal commentator. It's a shame that you feel unheard by your own captain, that really is an issue. The position is one that I would assume is earned through having proven yourself, though if he refuses to listen to his co-captain, then he's being belligerent or proud. I can see why blatching is attractive as an option, though like you say it's not really a strategy. I wish I could offer a solution, but the best I can offer is the thought that with age Rafael might become more reasonable. I'm afraid I have some terrible news for you. Right after the final, Serena Towers retired from Quidditch. Don't ask me how a third year retires, but perhaps after all those blatches and Bludgers she had decided she had enough. That, or perhaps it had been something she decided long before, something to do with her family life, I don't know her well enough to have asked. It really is a shame, I can't say I've seen many games, but she was an amazing Seeker. With an undefeated season and an international win, one would think she was at her prime. Perhaps she would still be willing to train with you if you asked? And you're right, I am home and well. I just visited my dear friend Willow Anderson this last weekend and enjoyed myself quite a bit. Things are calm and I can feel myself recovering from the stress of my first year. It was quite a lot, though admittedly a lot of my stress had been self-inflicted. My mother and sister are throwing another ball soon, which are usually boring. I have mostly been keeping up on my reading, I am close to my family, but the truth is most of my siblings are much older than me, so they have their own business and interests. I'm awaiting a visit from my oldest brother who is being kept away by work, and I'm very much looking forward to it. You would probably like him, he is quite brilliant and easy to talk to. Or perhaps you would like Darius better, since he is the one with the prize-winning horse. I hope your summer starts to improve and you get the chance to enjoy yourself more. Please take care. Kindest regards,
Flash Holmwood

Dracula characters based on how likely they would be to eat a worm
Jack Seward There’s scarcely anyone in this story more likely to eat a worm than Jack Seward. As an experiment? Yeah, sure. When he was bullied at school? Almost certainly. Because a somewhat overbearing father figure suggested it? Without question. This man has eaten a worm before and he would do so again.
Arthur Holmwood Arthur is the son of a Lord, the Victorian 1%, one of the most wealthy and privileged individuals in one of the most wealthy and privileged countries in the world. Until the events of the novel, do we think Arthur Holmwood, future Lord Godalming, ever had to do anything he didn’t want to? Even in the horrors of the Victorian public school system, rank has its privileges. He would not eat a worm.
Quincey Morris An adventurous type like Quincey? He wouldn’t just eat a worm, he’d fry it in a little butter and cayenne pepper and do his best to enjoy it.
Lucy Westenra as a human I was going to say absolutely not. Surely she would be horrified at the very idea. But equally, Lucy is by far the biggest people-pleaser in the whole novel, even more so than Jonathan ‘What a pretty colour all these red flags are’ Harker. If she thought eating a worm would make someone she loved happy, she’d dig right in.
Lucy Westenra as the Bloofer Lady Small children have been known to eat worms, and Lucy has been known to eat small children. So indirectly, yes, she would eat a worm.
Jonathan Harker It strikes me that we don’t know much about the eating habits of any of the characters in this novel – for instance, we know which pub Jack Seward likes, but not what he eats when he’s there.
But we have a wealth of information about Jonathan, and we know he is the kind of man who will have an unfamiliar paprika dish for dinner, have “queer dreams”, then go down for breakfast and have even more paprika.
Jonathan Harker would eat a worm.
Mina Harker née Murray Mina would do anything for her friends and loved ones, and that includes eating a worm. But come on guys, really? You would force Mina to eat a worm after everything she’s been through? You monsters.
Van Helsing Van Helsing thinks astral projection is real and parrots live forever. He’s the first person to consider the possibility that Lucy is being vampired. This man has the most open mind in the entire novel. He is a deeply weird individual and he would definitely eat a worm.
Mrs Westenra Mrs Westenra is a respectable Victorian lady of the upper-middle or upper-classes, and under no circumstances would she eat a worm.
Unless it was the last-ditch treatment for her ailing daughter, I guess.
Dracula You know the song you might have sung as a kid – “nobody likes me, everybody hates me, think I’ll go and eat worms?”
We know Dracula eats solicitors and Lucys, he doesn’t eat worms. But he should.
Renfield Do I even need to answer this one?

Feeling oddly comforted that everyone did see how brave the captain of the Demeter was, as he'd hoped in his final days that they would.

The greatest sources of horror in Dracula so far
5. Watching a friend fade away from a mysterious illness.
4. Being trapped with a predator who's toying with you like a cat with a mouse.
3. Your colleagues dying around you, one by one.
2. A ship sailing into Whitby harbour, steered only by a corpse.
1. The Victorian psychiatric system.

#2
IIRC, one of the standard academic takes on Dracula is that Mina is rewarded for being a dutiful wife (she learns shorthand, she travels to Budapest) and Lucy suffers for not being that (she has three suitors and wishes she could marry them all, etc).
Today's entry, and the commentary around it, makes me realise how little that holds up, so far at least. Lucy is so painfully dutiful - to her future husband, to her mother, to her friends, to her doctor - and all it's done is made her more vulnerable.
If she eloped with Arthur right now, she might be safe.
If she risked being honest with her mother, she might be safe.
If she put anyone to even slightly more trouble (Arthur, Jack, the servants) and had them stay up with her, she might be safe.
But she behaves like the ideal of a Victorian woman, always deferring to other people and putting their needs first. And that's why she's in so much danger tonight.

My Dracula Daily tags
Tumblr media
Heyo! Big time Dracula Daily reblogger here. feel free to follow or just to look for certain posts using my tags. like i said, big time reblogger (and i try to stay organized and consistent with the tags!). Draculadailytracker, Cattuladaily, ourgoodfriendjonathan, draculadailyreactions, and atundratoadstool are good blogs to check out too!
SO WHAT ON EARTH IS DRACULA DAILY?
‘tis a daily (kinda daily) newsletter that syncs up to when Dracula characters are doing shenanigans through the year! (or are, uh, not quite shenanigan-ing and are actually quite... dying-ing)
like, literally, it’s the 1897 novel by Bram Stoker we’re talking about here. runs from early May to some point in November idk exactly when it ends and i like it that way
you can sign up HERE and you can check out past installments HERE!
TABLE OF CONTENTS (order of sections)
IMPORTANT TAGS
ART(hur Holmwood) (i kid) (just art)
Quick character tags for convenience (LINKS LEAD TO SPOILERS, but no spoiler characters in this section! hoping to make a separate but more complete [and spoilery] character name masterpost)
BY DATE (the big one!!)
some bonus tags
IMPORTANT TAGS
(and if i miss putting any tags on a post -- or multiple posts! -- absolutely do feel free to pop me an ask or a message pointing them out. i’m trying to be organized here! :p)
• #dracula daily for pretty much all the vampire content, with few exceptions, even if not specifically Bram-Stoker-Dracula-related. if you were already following me before my Dracula Daily hype, you can block this tag. no offense taken lol
• #dracula spoilers is a tag you may want to block; it’s both for things that haven't yet been mentioned in Dracula Daily + posts that have multiple dates on them and are spoilery. e.g. if you want to look at the 3 May posts but there's also a mention of something from 5 May that might be a surprise, i'll toss the spoilers tag on there.
• #dracula important is a handful of posts that are both helpful links to things, such as a podcast that republished their work in the order of Dracula Daily in case you don’t have a chance to read the text itself (can be helpful for the longer entries and busier weeks), as well as posts that give historical context and let you know when Bram Stoker’s being especially racist or sexist in ways that many readers might miss
• #dracula notable (if you want to check this out but don’t want to get spoiled, be sure to check what date everything refers to. that might be in the header of a post or it might be in the tag label.) this tag is a combination of both especially important information (like, okay, Bram Stoker, who are you maligning today and what should we know about that) + simply some of my favorite posts. so, ’tis a mix of serious and goofs!
• #dracula meta is for background information, like how certain things would have been interpreted at the time of Dracula's publishing, info on Bram Stoker's life, his biases (heads up: RACIST RACIST SEXIST XENOPHOBIC MAN alongside other info too), and info on his thought processes. other related non-Dracula-universe info too. (regarding spoilers, same note as with the "dracula notable" tag: check post headers and tags for dates so you don't get spoiled)
(remember! you do not need to know everything about Bram Stoker’s background to read the story! this tag is a big part for fun / interest! really all you need to know is there are some questionable themes and portrayals in Dracula because of Stoker’s negative biases, but, other than that, you can just enjoy it! :) )
• #dd by itself is my non-Dracula Daily reblogs. i started that system and tag name early on and it's a bit confusing if you think about it for half a second, 'specially given my date-specific tags, but eh, it works
MORE TAGS UNDER CUT!
__________________________
ART(hur Holmwood) (i kid) (just art)
• #artsy dracula for the sincere and pretty stuff
• #dracula art for teh meems
(note that sometimes posts are tagged as both because yay)
QUICK CHARACTER TAGS FOR CONVENIENCE
(not putting spoiler info here lol) in order of appearance!
• #bram stoker (well, he’s the author and he doesn’t do any fourth wall breaking, but i’ll include him here lol)
• #jonathan harker (our good friend!!)
• #count dracula (you know this guy!)
• #mina murray (our good friend’s fiancée!)
• #lucy westenra (our good friend’s fiancée’s good friend!)
• #dr. john seward (a dude in charge of a psych hospital! [note: you don't have to like him. just know that, for the story's context, he is supposed to be a good guy, even if not necessarily a perfect guy])
• #quincey morris (a cool dude!)
• #arthur holmwood (a dude!)
• #r.m. renfield (a notable patient of Dr. Seward’s!)
(• #matt kirkland (creator of the Dracula Daily newsletter!) )
BY DATE
the format here is "dd (date) (month)," so the start of Dracula Daily and a glut of paprika memes would be "dd 3 may," but here, to make things pretty, i'll just list them without the "dd" at the start.
exceptions so far: • September is “sep,” so 3 September is “dd 3 sep”
(i may not stay on top of updating this list of all the dates, but i’ll still be tagging posts correctly!)
• no date(#ddn) (posts that aren’t spoilery and don’t have any other tag, such as those that also aren’t a “dracula meta” post and don’t relate to a specific day.)
BONUS: APRIL
• 21 April • 25 April • 28 April • 30 April (one queued for 2024 lol)
MAY
( “ &* ” just means “i need to get some entries for this date, either because i reblogged very few posts or because i didn’t reblog anything”)
• 3 May (paprika!)
• 4 May (Jonathan gets a rosary and people are scared for him!)
• 5 May (Jonathan meets the count and is served a tasty chicken!)
• 7 May (discussing the count's property in London + Dracula’s just a little guy reading the Bradshaw’s Guide)
• 8 May (RIP in pepperoni Jonathan's foul bauble of man's vanity [i.e. mirror] + Jonathan sees the Count making his bed + the count talks about his family's history and bloodline [here's a GREAT breakdown on all that!])
• 9 May (Mina chattin' with her buddy Lucy!)
• 10 May
• 11 May (Lucy replies to Mina and informs her of a crush!)
MANY OF THE DESCRIPTIONS HAVE SPOILERS AFTER THIS POINT. CONTINUE AT YOUR OWN RISK
(remember, you can edit the tags in the url or search my blog for the proper dates' tags manually if you don't want to risk being spoiled by descriptions here. again, format is "#dd (date) (month)", like "#dd 15 may", with "dd" meaning "dracula daily")
––
––
• 12 May (Jonathan is scared of the count and sees the first lizard-like crawling!)
• 13 May and 14 May
• 15 May (🦎 LIZARD FASHION 🦎 and Jonathan is trapped then finds an old-fashioned desk!) (this is one of the exceptions to the “dracula spoilers” tag. often if there’s just mention of the count doing some lizard crawling, i’ll put this date’s tag on there lol. “Once more have I seen the Count go out in his lizard fashion.”)
• 16 May (the three vampire ladies!)
• 18 May (ruh-roh our good friend Jonathan's not hallucinating!)
• 19 May (our good friend Jonathan is in the toils! [in which he has to write three letters])
• 24 May (COWBO [sic] AND DOCTOR HOURS AND LUCY HAS QUITE THE DAY)
• 25 May (Seward's first podcast installment [poor Renfield] + Quincey invites Holmwood for drinks)
• 26 May (ART! he has news that shall make ears tingle)
• 27 May
• 28 May ( [okay, legit, Jonathan is super racist and also uses two really bad slurs. call those groups Romani instead] Jonathan tries to send some letters with the help of some Romani outside the castle!)
• 30 May
• 31 May (ruh-roh! our good friend’s papers, writing utensils, travel info, and the clothes he traveled in have disappeared!)
JUNE
• 5 June (Dr. Seward talks with his patient Renfield, who’s been collecting pet flies! cute! :) [this is an insect positive blog <3 ] and we’re told we won’t get more Dracula Daily for quite a bit of time :( )
• 17 June ( (Remember to call the locals Romani, not the g- or sz-words Jonathan calls them! those are legit really bad slurs!) some locals deliver items to Dracula’s castle! and Jonathan’s been locked in his room now!)
• 18 June (Jonathan cudgels his brains! and Renfield clears the flies out of his room! ...oh. they were for his new spiders)
• 24 June (Dracula wears Jonathan’s clothes into the nearby towns to pose as him! + Jonathan sees the woman vampires start to materialize through dust! + Dracula kills a child and then kills the child’s mother with a bunch of wolves!)

"My friend, welcome to the Carpathians. I,... am anxiously expecting you,... at the Borgo Pass. My carriage will await and bring you to me. I,... trust your journey from London has been a happy one,... and that you will enjoy your stay,... in my beautiful land.
Your friend,... V."
***
"Do you believe in destiny? That,... even the,... powers,... of time,... can be altered for a single purpose? " As if in a trance, V went to the table and picked up your picture, protecting it from the flame of the candle but not from the dark ink that just spilled on it due to his carelessness and on his haste to hold it.
And as the old Count looked at you, Nero felt a complete sense of dread washing over him.
V smiled as he cradled the picture like a lost belonging. "The luckiest man who walks on this earth is the one who finds,... true love."
"You found (Y/N). I thought she was lost. We are to be married as soon as I return." Nero happily told the Count as he pointed at your picture at V's pale hands. "Are you married, Count?" He asked as he noticed the Lord of the castle looking at your picture with a strange expression he couldn't quite tell. "Sir, are you married?"
"I was married once." Count V answered, a single tear rolling down his jade eye. "Ages ago it seems. She died."
"Oh. I'm very sorry."
"She was fortunate. My life, at its best, is,... misery." The Count told Nero as he gave your picture back to him. "She will no doubt make a,... devoted wife. And you, a faithful husband."
In a space of a few seconds, the frown and sadness on the Count's face vanished as he made Nero sit back down on his chair.
"Come. Write now, my friend, to your firm,... and to any loved ones to say that it shall please you,... to stay with me,... until a month from now."
Nero looked up at V, his eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "A month? Do you wish me to stay so long?"
V leaned in closer, his sinister eyes telling him that the Count was already up to no good. "I will take no,... refusal."
***
"I love him! I love him!" Your best friend, Lady, exclaimed as she came out of her room, twirling and waltzying about as she gracefully ran towards you. "I love him and I said yes!" She sat down next to you and held your hands.
"Oh, finally!" You shook your head as you smiled at her. "Don't tell me. The Devil Hunter with the big sword?"
"Oh, no, no. To my dear number three." Lady answered you. "Lord Vergil Sparda." She cleared her throat. Changing her tone to match that of her butler's, she announced, "Lord and Lady Sparda! And you are to be my Maid Of Honor. Please, say yes."
The smile on Lady's lips vanished when she saw the frown on your face. "What is it, (Y/N)? It's the most exciting day of my life!" She sighed as he shoulders slumped in sadness. "You don't seem to care,..."
"It's just that I'm so worried about Nero." You showed Lady the letter you received from your fiance. "This letter I received is so cold, it's so unnatural. It's not like him, at all!"
"Oh, (Y/N), don't worry."
***
"See me. See me now,..."
In your haste, you bumped into someone as you turned, dropping the perfume you just bought from the apothecary. A small and dainty gasp escaped your lips as his glove hand caught it with an unbelievable speed and offered it back to you.
"My,... humblest apologies." He said as you glanced at him with wide, surprised eyes. "Forgive my,... ignorance. I,... recently arrived from abroad, and I,... do not know your city. Is a beautiful lady - ?"
"The purchase of a street atlas is a sixpence. Good day." You simply answered as you snatched the bottle of perfume away from his hand.
You were about to walk away when he called you back.
"I have offended you."
You looked back at him and saw him still standing there where you left him.
"I' am only looking for the Cinematograph. I understand it is a wonder of the civilized world."
"If you seek culture, then visit a museum. London is filled with them. Excuse me." You answered as you finally left him.
But, not even a minute has passed when you saw him again smiling at you when you turned around a corner.
How did he get there so fast?!
"A woman so lovely and intelligent," He began with a smile as you tried to ignore him. "... should not be walking the streets of London without her gentleman."
Finally losing your patience with the annoying man, you turned back at him and fired at him. "Do I know you, sir?! Are you acquainted with my husband?!" You emphasized, hoping for the man to get the hint. You tilted your head to the side at the location of the police department. "Shall I call the Police?!"
The man opened his mouth to say something else but, he simply dropped it. He slightly bowed his head as he gave you an apologizing look. "Husband? Then, I shall bother you no more." He tilted his top hat and walked away.
Feeling guilty of what you just said, you followed him. "Sir, it is I who have been rude." You spoke, not really knowing why you even bothered to talk to him, a complete stranger, in the first place. "If you're looking for - "
"Please," he gently cut you off as he looked at you through his blue - tinted pair of glasses.
Those jade eyes, you thought. They look so,... familiar,...
"Permit me to introduce myself." He announced as he removed his top hat and bowed at you like a true gentleman. "I,... am Prince Vlad,... of Sagite. But, you can call me V."
You smirked at the name and title he just revealed to you. "A Prince, no less?"
"I' am,... your servant." He replied as he wore his top hat once more.
"(Y/N) (L/N)."
Your eyes widened even more as this enigmatic man who called himself V went closer to you, his deep eyes never leaving yours. "I,... am,... honored,... Madame (Y/N)." He declared as he took your gloved hand in his and gave it a chaste peck.
You gave him a genuine smile and gestured towards the location he was looking for - the Cinematograph.
This mysterious one,... something drew you to him. He looked so familiar, so gentle,...
It's as if you've been with him before in a past life,...
"This way."

40 for Eirs for the angst prompts?
thank you!! i don’t think this is super angsty, but that’s just me! warning for blood and stuff!
40. “Do you think I wanted this?”
prompt list!! send me one?
With shaking legs Eira steps back from the imposing figure before her. The woman steps forward, a smile that Eira knows can be nothing but cruel stretched across her face. Eira stumbles into a table. A vase falls onto the stone floor, the noise that it makes while it shatters making Eira want to claw at her head- but she can’t. Her hands are frozen, fingers curled around the edge of the table.
“Oh, darling, why are you so scared?” Her voice sends a shiver down Eira’s spine, it makes her want to fall to the floor and sob. “I merely did what you told me to do.”
“Do you think I wanted this? All this suffering?” Eira’s voice fails her as tears well in her eyes. “I wanted to right the wrongs that had been done to my people, not add to their struggles.”
“You should have specified that when you asked me to help you.”
Eira recoils as the woman stretches out an arm. Still, cold fingers touch her cheek and make bile rise in her throat.
“You poor, naive girl. Did you honestly trust me to do as you said? Are you truly so trusting as to not question someone who arrives just in time to save your pathetic country?” She laughs harshly, sounding like nails on a chalkboard to Eira’s sensitive ears.
“You said you were related to Holmwood, and he-”
“People lie, darling. My name isn’t Holmwood nor has it ever been and I never wanted to help you. I am Jayah and I came here to take control and that is exactly what I am going to do.” As she speaks, her right hand pulls out a knife.
Eira shudders and attempts to back away again, but her muscles don’t respond. She can’t move, even breathing is a struggle. All she can do is stare at the woman who she thought was her ally in all this.
When the knife pierces her flesh, Eira can feel every single fiber being cut, she can hear the muscles and flesh tearing. She doesn’t feel herself falling, but she feels her body hit the floor. Jayah’s feet come closer and Eira closes her eyes.
“Sweet child, if you hadn’t had caught on to my plan, I might have let you live. You really are forcing my hand here.”
Her condescending voice sends a sense of rage through Eira. No matter how naive this Jayah thinks she is, she is still smart, that much she knows. She’s been able to make plans to help her country, to help Lumi figure out complex puzzles, and to uncover Jayah’s true identity, however unexpected that was. She’s smart enough to find a way out of this.
What would Amary do? She thinks, trying to remember everything about her elder sister, trying to figure out how she thinks, but she doesn’t have much time. Her thoughts race, she’s unable to keep up with them.
“You’ll have no more blood left in your body soon, darling, I hope you enjoy these last few moments, knowing that you’re alone and no one will come to save you.”
Eira opens her eyes, seeing Jayah step over her before disappearing from view. Soon, the sound of the door clicking shut echoes through the room. She tries to push herself to a sitting position, but she just collapses, her own blood coating her hands as she slips. Tears stream down Eira’s face, mixing with blood.
I’m not Amary, I can’t force myself through this. I don’t want to die.

First Chapter
Please forgive me if this sounds preachy. The church had been a big deal during that time, and religion was brought up on occasion in the original that this is a spin off from. I had a bit of trouble with this first chapter, but I enjoyed writing it nonetheless.
I Suppose That One Starts at the Beginning
Everyone thinks that they know what happened to Lucy Westenra. Her sad story consists of a young woman with a proper upbringing that was pursued by three good men, wedded one that became a fine lord, was turned into a vampire by a monster, and then put to rest by her beloved. Well, at the very least, that is what they think they know, including the very group that laid her to her final rest. I would know better, though. Why? Because I am Lucy Westenra, and this is my story.
Now, I had been given a proper education and went to church like mother and father said any honest woman should. However, I had a nasty habit of asking questions that mother always said were inappropriate of a lady. Father always suggested that I was born before my time. I guess that is what got me “in trouble” in the first place. Everyone would say that Mina helped keep me in check, and maybe she did. She was always a proper forward-thinking woman. I sometimes wondered if that was why he never cared for when I mentioned her.
I had cared for her as well as the three kind men, who had pined for my affections. I had wished that I could have married them all. It would have made it so much easier than having to break any of their hearts, but such thoughts were improper of a lady, especially of one of my station.  They were very kind and understanding, and I do believe that they loved me until the very end.
Now, I barely knew the man that John had called to save me, but I’d like to think that he was a kind soul if a bit eccentric. I could tell, though, that there was a deep seeded hatred towards the monster that turned me. The hatred was quite mutual, and I began to understand why when the doctor was allowed to ramble on. Although, he had been very kind in dealing with me, despite his feelings towards the one that turned me.
The monster in question, a one Count Dracula, was actually a man with a dream. Most might have called him mad, and the doctor had once compared him to having a child’s brain. He was so much more than all of that, though. He was far from the monster that he has often been portrayed as, whether by the letters or diaries of my friends or the any other source of information and stories, but I’m getting ahead of myself.
I suppose that one starts at the beginning when they tell their story, much like our heavenly Lord did for His Son in the “Gospel of John”. I am no savior though, nor is he. We were but two children that found each other in the dark of night.
Now, if one were to start at the beginning, then it might be best to start with when I met the three dear men that wished to wed me. Mina was away, and I had envied her for it. She was just as beautiful as they would say I was, and she was in love, what I wanted more than anything. However, she was so much more than that, she was ambitious, wanting of a career, to be a woman of the future. I had longed to be like her, to travel and do something with my life. She barely even had time to write to me, she was so busy in living her life, and it left me feeling a little sour.
I was working on a handkerchief at my mother’s behest when she came in with a charming young man. I paused to admire the new soul mother had brought into my life. He looked positively angelic with his fair curly locks. With the fair skin typical of a man of status, it caused his deep blue eyes to stand out like sapphires. He towered over my dear mother like a friendly giant with that sweet, bashful smile of his. I was taken with him on the spot.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Miss Westenra,” he said, taking my hand and kissing it. “Your mother has told me so much about you.”
“I wish that I could say the same,” I chortled, hiding my smile behind my other hand.
“Dear me, my apologies, I am Arthur Holmwood,” he stated, bowing.
“It’s a pleasure,” I replied, taking his hand and asking him to sit with me for a while.
I had asked our maid to fix some tea while Arthur and I chatted with each other. I learned a bit about him as we chatted. He was the son of a lord, and happened to be good friends with my family. He hoped to escort me to a gala that was coming up. I was positively thrilled with the idea.
We talked gayly over tea and cakes for a while. We laughed every so often. When it was time for him to leave, I was upset to see him go. I followed him out as far as was acceptable for a lady, wishing that I didn’t have to be held to such standards.
Arthur paused, turning back. “Miss Lucy, I would like to meet you at the next Pop, if that is alright?”
I smiled, feeling giddy over the thought. “I would be delighted.”
He smiled, winked at me causing me to blush, and went away. It pained me to watch him go, but I was excited about the thought of seeing him again. I rolled my eyes when my mother commented that he would be a perfect match.
Granted, it had crossed my mind that I was almost 20 and I had yet to be proposed to. Why did a woman have to marry a man in order to be complete herself? Why must a woman be measured by the number of men who wish to wed her? Was a woman’s only purpose to marry and birth children? Why couldn’t she make something of herself of her own choosing?
I had to stop my train of thought for I was treading in dangerous waters. This is how arguments with my mother always started. I would have my revolutionary, unladylike schemes and she would hint that I was a heathen destined for Hell for going against the Holy Father. Surely, our Lord would commend me for trying to be a forward thinking woman. At least, that is what I would like to think. Then mother would be cruel and ask why I couldn’t be more like Mina. Father, with his perfect timing, would interject then saving me from saying something that I would regret.
This time, I decided to simply dismiss myself to my room. I slid back against the door once I was safe inside the one place I found solitude and sighed. I didn’t wish to be such a disappointment, really I didn’t. Was it my fault that either the Lord or the Devil had blessed me with the need to know why the world had to work the way it did?
I glanced up and saw my writing set. A sudden urge to write to my dearest Mina hit me as I rushed over. Grabbing a pen and paper, I wrote furiously all my frustrations down. If I could speak freely to anyone, it was Mina. Once I had written what I felt was everything, I folded the letter and slipped it into its envelope and sealed it. I went to my door and called one of the maids, asking her to have it mailed for me. I breathed a sigh as soon as she went away feeling much lighter now that I had expelled my troubling thoughts on paper.
I looked out my window at the garden below and noticed that the roses were in bloom. They tended to be so beautiful with their various shades of colors. I always loved the white roses and how they shone brightly against the dark green of the leaves. However, for some reason, I could only see deep red roses that looked like droplets of crimson against a field of green.
