After returning to our side of palace, Jude rambles on about how I could've gotten killed, about how I'd carelessly been kidnapped, and all the dangers I'd put myself in this past mission. You'd think we were married, the way he's scolding me.

As he comes closer, all up in my face, cigarette dangling on his lips, I grin smugly, further irritating him.

"The hell ya makin' that face for, princess?" Jude sneers.

"You talk too much," I retort.

"Oughta have yer ass pay me back for all 'a this. Tch, so annoying," he groans, running a hand through his hair as he takes another drag, exhaling as he tries to calm himself down.

"Hey Jude?" I start.

"What?" He asks, an edge to his voice as he comes closer again, amethyst eyes inspecting my body for any further damage. "Speak up, I can't hear you," he teases, done with his ogling.

"Would you just shut the fuck up-"

"Listen here you little-"

"-and kiss me already?"

"Hah?" Jude's eyes widen, cigarette dangling from his lips. His eyes then narrow, looking at me smugly. "Always knew you were a little harlot."

"Only for you, Jude." I grin, legs dangling off the corner of the infirmary table, hands slowly letting go of their grip on it. "Now are you gonna kiss me or not?"

"Why should I?" Jude retorts, but still moves in closer anyway.

"You gonna make me actually have to pay you or something? So stingy."

"Princess," he warns.

"Jude."

"Masochist."

"Sadist."

Jude laughs, leaning in with an expression so minutely different, you'd have to squint to see the way it softens when he looks at me. But I can tell, I can always tell.

"Damn right I am. An' don't you forget it."

He pulls me close into a brusing kiss at last, tasting like the cigarette that had just been on his lips, and the dried blood still on mine. Just as bitter as our cursed love will always be, even amid the sweeter moments. But I wouldn't have it any other way, even when the time comes when we're inevitably dragged to hell together.

and some teens, including one of the kids’ sister, a genderqueer guy who tried to get out of town but was drawn back, a homeless trans guy and his dog, and the police captain’s son who get drawn into the web of it all against their will

Seeing that one post going around that's just basically 'say if you ever read fanfictions that are better than published books' and it's like, yeah of course there are some that are better, because some people are genuinely good writers, but also there are good books too, and then seeing people say things like, 'I have never read a good book I only prefer fanfictions' and it's just?? Seek out some books? There are so many different kinds, for so many different things. It just sounds like you're reading for an easy serotonin boost than really engaging with the work.

People who write books and people who write fanfics have one thing in common: they write. They are doing the act of writing, and each person is going to have different styles and come at it with different experiences. Also, if your favorite fanfic writer comes out with an original work that's not just filing the serial numbers off, will you read it? Or are you only there because they're writing your favorite characters from another piece of media (which might even be from a book?). Speaking as a fanfic writer who is happy when people compliment my writing, please read some books I'm begging. Not everything is from booktok.

unrelated to my previous manga complaints, but do you ever like read a romance and just find yourself completely uninterested in all the side characters but the mangaka clearly really likes the side characters to the point where the secondary romance becomes just as prevalent as the main characters and actually cuz the main characters have gotten together now the rest of the manga is just going to be brief snippets of fluff for them and then chapters of dedication to the second ship getting together but you dont even care about the secondary characters so you just like skip all of it????

Reading about one of the elections for Holy Roman Emperor, where a guy who had proven himself to be a terrible king was running, having lied to become king that he wouldn’t take away the rights of a large demographic of people and then immediately did it once in power to very violent degrees to thousands of people

And of the 6 other people who could choose who to elect, 3 were part of the group that he actively took away rights and inflicted violence on

But they thought changing to someone who wasn’t a Habsburg, changing to something they weren’t used to, would be a whole thing and they didn’t care enough about the terrible things the guy would do to go about dealing with it, so they voted with everyone else for the guy who they knew broke promises to not take away rights who absolutely would take away their rights and those of everyone like them and now had much more power over many more people to inflict this terror on, completely unchecked

And the book, talking about the guy running against him, uses the line “But Frederick had not reckoned with the persuasive pull of the status quo.”

And you know something about this whole section is hitting me harder than I was prepared for, for some weird reason
