today’s first note of love post is brought to you by me reading too much into xiao hai wearing a baseball cap the first time he goes to echo music and gets officially introduced to neil

i just find it so interesting because the only other time we’ve seen xiao hai wearing a hat in these first 5 episodes was in the flashback when he was going to magnet’s concert the day matt died

i wonder if maybe some subconscious part of him was trying to emulate neil’s look from the day they first met

but what fascinates me the most is that on a narrative point of view the hat is an element of concealment: in the past neil used it to help not being recognized by people, but in the present he’s using it to metaphorically hide himself away too. a baseball cap, in particular, is also a type of hat that with the right angle can somewhat cover the eyes, which in this case really are the window of the soul: you can tell a lot about how both neil and xiao hai feel by the emotions they’re conveying through their eyes, and a lot of communication between them is also done just by looking at each other, so i think it’s interesting that in their official first meeting, which goes spectacularly bad, they’re both somehow blocking themselves from being fully seen by the other

and if we keep this in mind, then it's not surprising that the first time we see neil without the hat in the present is when he is back on a stage, after six years, because of xiao hai

without the hat hiding them, they're finally able to actually see each other
