Brian Jacques' Redwall Animated Series
Tumblr media
I just finished watching this series recently and thought now would be a great time to share with you what I think of it.
The Redwall animated TV series, based on the books by Brian Jacques with the same name. The series consists of three seasons each with a length 13 episodes.
The first season follows the story of a young mouse named Matthias becoming a warrior to stop Cluny the Scourge and take back a piece the tapestry of Martin the Warrior he stole and save Redwall Abbey from his wrath.  The second season takes place many years later with Mattias' and his son Mattimeo on a quest to stop Slagar the Slaver and free his slaves from his grasp, but will the others back at Redwall be able to defend the abbey while they are gone?  And the third season follows the story of Martin the Warrior trying to avenge his father after Badrang steals the sword he entrusted to him and enduring working as his slave.
I first saw this series months ago when I was rewatching Timothy Goes to School and was curious.  This was certainly nothing like any other cartoon I’ve ever watched, because it had no filler episodes at all—it followed straight through the storyline from beginning to end with no breaks.  It was quite an awesome experience!  The ending was quite saddening to say the least, but I actually liked it!  If you like things like Warriors, Guardians of Ga’hoole or Wolves of the Beyond, then I recommend you give this a watch.  I honesty think it’s underrated, and I believe we need more cartoons like Redwall.
Click the attachment below to watch Redwall on YouTube!
Also, a minor note: after watching the final episode, I’ve heard that Redwall is getting a Netflix adaption written by Patrick McHale, creator of Over the Garden Wall.  And it will feature Doctor Who stars Peter Capaldi and Karen Gillan.  So, that’s some news to look forward to!
What do you guys think about Redwall?  Comment down below! Until then, hope you have a great day!

I’ve been rewatching Doctor Who from ecceston onwards (and honestly, I don’t get why some people don’t like him he was fab) and I’ve just watched the Fires of Pompeii again (I think I’ve watched some of David’s episodes a few times as a kid, I only really remember Matt Smith onward) and that line
“Its volcano day”. That line broke me.
I remembered Jack Harkness saying that exact same thing in the episode he was introduced in about 2 seasons ago when he said he’s been to Pompeii loads of times, you just had to remember to set your alarm for volcano day.
Then later on the Doctor says “you forgot to set your alarm. It’s volcano day” meaning the ship he was trying to hustle got blown up by German bombs.
The parallels? Especially considering Jack Harkness shows up again (I know he does with Jodie but I don’t know if he does before then) (I need to watch Torchwood as well that seems epic from what I’ve heard)
Chefs kiss. Just absolute. I feel like it would have been even cooler to have him appear in the background for a split second as an Easter Egg or something though or have a mention of him with the amount of times he’d been there.
I also didn’t realise Karen Gillian was in this episode. Moment I saw her I was telling my boyfriend “it’s Amy Pond!” And he had to pause and have a good look.
And the Doctors 12th? 13th? (Peter Capaldi) regeneration being the man he saved from Pompeii when trying to just save one person?
Fantastic. This is why I love Doctor Who.
Also, the episode before that, ROSE WAS THERE OH MY GOD. I can’t wait to see Heather that was just a teaser to fuck with us as viewers or if she actually has some sort of cameo because that was cool as shit.

My dumb self didn't realise that the new episodes of Dr Who were out.
And I'm watching it and wondering why I can't remember anything about Jodi Whittaker's season. Why didn't I like it so much?
Why did a Doctor that on paper should have worked, and was just as funny and silly as a Doctor can be, floundered so much.
I remember hating the writing and feeling like it was very on the nose with messages, but all of Doctor Who has moments like that.
I think I need to rewatch it. I didn't like Capaldi either, but I remember why: found it too dramatic and didn't like Clara

who is your favorite doctor? i love love love 9 but i haven't watched any classic who so jury is still out
my absolute favorite will always be 10, david tennant's doctor.
the very first episode i watched was blink which was. quite an introduction to who. david tennant is one of my absolute favorite actors, and i feel like he absolutely nailed the characterization for the tenth doctor. the tenth doctor's series ran from 2005-2010, and i feel like tennant's doctor perfectly captured the absurd and eclectic feeling of the 2000s. the internet was booming, it was a new millennia, and kids like me were told that the world was our oyster. watching doctor who made us feel like the universe, all of time and space, was too.
i also absolutely loved the balance between humor, adventure, and serious confrontations with morality. i think there is no better episode to describe this than "planet of the ood." catherine tate and david tennant are such an incredible duo and play off each other so effortlessly. they have such perfect comedic tone and timing, but during the scene where the doctor and donna meet the natural ood that are being held captive, both of them showcase such incredible depth of emotion that you don't even need to have a Statement of Theme. the way donna reacts to those ood says it all. i think another great example of this impressive acting is "the fires of pompeii." catherine tate absolutely nails the last like 10 minutes (and it's fun to see peter capaldi, especially knowing he'll be back!!). it definitely helps that the writers for the tenth doctor's series gave them awesome material to work with. i feel like i haven't seen as much of that in the newer series, despite really liking the actors.
so yeah, i think what makes the tenth doctor my favorite is a combination of tennant's stellar acting and characterization, great chemistry with costars (especially tate), and great writing. i'll be rewatching these seasons for as long as i live.

First time watching the 13th doctor Thoughts
First off, this is my first time getting 'not my doctor' syndrome. I think this may be because all the other doctors were already doctors when I started watching Doctor Who.
(While all of capaldi's seasons weren't out then, I was aware going into the fandom that he was one of the doctors. I also watched all the seasons near consecutively during summer break, so I never had time to be like. Noo I want to watch the last doctor. Because I just wanted to watch more doctor who.)
But this time it was different. I was looking at a lady I knew as an actor (from Chibnall's other work, Broadchurch (my beloved!)) and from her cover of Yellow, of all things.
Tumblr media
Perhaps more importantly, I came in knowing many people didn't like her seasons. Which is weird.
Like, it is a weird experience going into a show you love being like. Ok so is it as bad as people say.
I have experience in this. I watched supernatural. (of course) And I was a bit behind on the show, always a handful of seasons behind, so I knew I was heading nowhere good. But with supernatural, you never know when it gets bad (expect the last episode. I know that one is ass). The best episodes are in the worst seasons and the worst seasons sometimes have the best ideas and its a mess. But people (on twitter, especially) gave me this idea that 13's seasons were all worse quality.
It really wasn't.
Now I'm only on season 1, and the timeless child arch is still to come, which I fear as I don't like the concept from what I've heard (i really like the idea of the doctor as just some person fumbling around, hence why I like 12 better than 11). But for now. It's a pretty good show.
The episodes feel very rewatchable to me.
Compared to the much more interconnected stories going on in 11 and 12's run, every episode of season 11 could be watched alone with little explanation. Not that that is better or worse, but it means I can def go back and pick a random episode to rewatch whenever I need.
Tumblr media
And It is fun!
Almost every episode in this season was super fun! Obviously they had some more emotionally charged ones ('demons of punjab', 'the battle of ranskoor av kolos' (the finale), and maybe a bit of 'It Take You Away') but overall there were a lot of really fun moments and sites and it was somewhat whimsical at times but not in the same way as 11. The peak example being Kerblam!
The characters were also what made it so fun.
They're a jolly little crew of fellas traveling through space togather. No one feels like the 'main character' (ok Ryan sort of does. Because he started off the show you know, Rose style?). So far, it is Yasmin who feels like the tack on.
Which is funny because the only companion I've heard about at length is Yaz and how great she is and so far I am like, oh yeah, she had a few episodes (Arachnids in the UK and Demons of Punjab). Like I don't really care about her yet. I don't feel connected with her.
You know who I do feel connected/invested in. MY OLD MAN. GRAHAM CRACKER. (not cus he's white, it's a brand guys). i love this old man. I feel for him. I wanted his revenge when he wanted his revenge. I was so happy for him when he was happy that Ryan called him gramps (or whatever he called him). Like I was literally giggling cus he was happy over it and that made me happy cus I was emotionally invested in him!
I liked the idea of Graham before I watched this season actually, due to a reddit post where someone was like, best crossover would be three old men (the 12th doctor and graham and wilf) running around for an episode. And I was like, omg that is an amazing idea.
Okay I need a whole post for the Fam and how I actually love having a little crew in the tardis. Next post it is.

hi, do you have any plans of doing a review system similar to the measurement when you get to the chibnall era of doctor who? I think you said that you didn’t watch it, but i could be wrong
SoooOOOOOoooo first of all hi friend!
second of all: back in the day of uh... whenever the first season of jodie came out, I did watch that season and enjoy it, it was a fun first season. I then promptly forgot everything that happens in it, because my brain works that way, and then (because my brain also does this) was like "well legally I can't watch the second season of jodie unless I rewatch the first season of jodie because I can't remember what happened in it, and I can't watch the first season of jodie, because I don't remember what happened in capaldi's seasons, and I can't watch capaldi's seasons because then I'd have to rewatch matt smith's seasons and if I watch those from beginning to end again I will lose all joy in my soul"
third of all: I no longer feel that way, I have grown as a person who deals with my brain being a silly-billy, so not only could I legally watch whatever I wanted to without the brain police nee-nawing, I also um... well I have a system of how to watch matt smith's seasons so that I find them enjoyable, so actually maybe on second thoughts I didn't quite outrun the whatever-the-heck-my-brain-does laws, so much as... rewrite them a little to work for me (crucially I did in fact... watch all of matt smith's seasons and capaldi's seasons to get back here, so hopefully I can implement a more holistic watch in future, where I just engage with the episodes I noted down with commentary and rankings that I enjoyed!)
fourth of all: I'm not sure if this rating system works for chibnall's era (I mean, maybe it does, I genuinely don't know, but my gut says no). the reason I wrote it in exactly the way that I did was mainly because of very specific noticeable recurring things I dislike in m*ffat's writing across several shows -- misogyny, making all of his main guys cruel because they're "intelligent" (which absolves them of the need to be not-cruel), those men being the most important thing in the universe of the story, "sexy" dialogue, amatonormativity, and overly complex plotlines that often spring up out of nowhere and go nowhere
fifth of all: so maybe what I'll do is just note down more simply what I'm getting out of (or potentially not getting out of) jodie's run. I obviously know the reputation of that era, I've seen a couple of oof moments, but there are definitely oof moments in rtd's and m*ffat's runs, so those alone aren't dealbreakers so much as "I see you"s
sixth of all: actually my main question with regards to chibnall's era is whether he understands that diversity is about more than casting. this in particular with regards to yas being a police officer, and how that may or may not create a difficulty in discussing the limitations and cruelties of systems, such as those propped up by... police officers. (this, by the way, speaking of rtd, so many people of colour and of course shirley anne who's a wheelchair user represented in UNIT, but that is a whole other tangent -- shirley I am manifesting a liz shaw type arc for you where you get to go "hold on, this whole thing is sus")
seventh of all: I think it's much harder, probably, to discuss chibnall's era with such a simplistic system, because from the outset it's a much more complex thing than what m*ffat was doing -- that is m*ffat's was still essentially casting a couple of white guys who were travelling with white women until s10 (which noticeably is... just a better season, in my opinion). this not to say I'm not critiquing it, but I wouldn't want to make a ranking system out of "how well does chibnall do diversity," I feel like that would be crass of me, because these stories opening up like this is already such a fascinating space to play in, vs me in m*ffat's era actually being able to track the almost complete absence of diversity in s5 (vampires in venice and hungry earth have my back) just... as a whole... to where we got to in s9 and s10, and using this measurement system to go "yeah this era got noticeably better on several fronts later on" -- I note btw on this point, that bill is waaay more proactive in her first three episodes that amy or clara usually got to be. her questions also aren't just essentially "and now what are you going to do doctor," they're more her trying to figure out how she's navigating her environments and then working with the tools she's getting
eighth of all (conclusion): probably not a review "system" but yeah, I'll still review for sure and maybe find a way to structure that, I want to be consciously interacting with the story, it's the best way for me to engage and actually remember it afterwards. I won't have the benefit of foresight with these seasons either -- that is, I won't know where certain things are going and how I feel about those trajectories (for example, although I don't remember s10 I do remember liking it!) + what I do know, I'll be filtering somewhat (with the flux for example) through the three specials we just got, so I'll know there's some form of through-line of emotional arc that perhaps wasn't felt as much when it was first being aired? all suppositions
ninth of all (epilogue): I am eager I tell you, eeaaager to see sacha dhawan in action!
tenth of all (nothing in particular): I remember s11 starts in sheffield, which is wonderful to me. since the time it aired I've just been in sheffield so many times, it feels so very familiar to me. wonderful to get out of london for a bit

i actually really like peter capaldi as the doctor. i did watch his run all at once in 2016 or 2017, not as it aired, and i don't remember having very strong feelings about it. i think i was just checked out and not invested anymore. coming back to 12 now during this rewatch has made me appreciate capaldi a lot more. i watched "heaven sent" last night, and it is genuinely GREAT, and that is because it is 100% capaldi just giving it. he has a very different energy from 9-11, but it works so well. it helps that moffat is a little less moffaty in the material at this point.
unfortunately for 12, i can't stand clara. nothing against jenna coleman, i'm sure she's lovely, but two and a half seasons of clara was painful. can i tell you anything about her character arc? her wants vs needs? anything at all about her life? no. i can't. because none of that showed up at any point over the course of her THIRTY-SEVEN episodes.
now i have made it past the Clara Era, it is time to watch some christmas specials i've never seen before & revisit BILL, who i remember being great. and then capaldi's final episode, which i also never got around to watching. i may actually catch up with 13 as well before the 60th anniversary, which is pretty wild. it's taken me like two months to get this far. i will never attempt this again.

I Watched All of Doctor Who Series 1/Series 14 Today
I kinda thought it'd be fun to watch the entire series in one day instead of watching weekly AND I WAS RIGHT. IT WAS FUN. I muted lots of words across social media and managed to remain unspoiled so I got to just experience the series without any expectations. Would recommend as a way to experience the show, free of fandom nonsense and having no idea what might happen. OK SO. BRIEF THOUGHTS ON EACH EPISODE BELOW THE CUT. (Also for the record, I dropped off Doctor Who in Peter Capaldi's early episodes and then only tuned back in for David Tennant's specials last year. So I might be missing some stuff that is important? idk.)
Gonna assign each episode a letter grade because why not?
Space Babies (C) - The way things were explained made it SO obvious that they wanted this episode to serve as an introduction to completely new viewers. Which... fair enough. As a whole the episode was meh. I did like the Bogeyman made of literal bogeys, but "Babies Can Talk!" humor is not my cup of tea. Wouldn't choose to rewatch this any time soon.
The Devil's Chord (B) - A solid Monster of the Week type episode. The fashion was ON POINT and I like the idea of the importance of music to humanity. But the musical finale number was cringe and just not a good song so... docking points.
Boom (D) - I swear I tried to not have my pre-conceived Moffat hating influence me, but like this was a bad episode? It just WAS. SORRY. It was boring and SO heavy handed and the episode's pacing felt glacial. Only saving grace was Ncuti's acting, tbh.
73 Yards (A+) - UM WOW. I think the last time I felt this way about an episode of Doctor Who was like... Midnight? And I think the vibes of Midnight and 73 Yards are similar in that it's a simple thing that is VERY creepy. (The repeating voice vs a figure that stays exactly 73 yards away, always.) And the way Ruby used her to end the evil PM. AMAZING. Can I explain the time travel/time loop/time lines of it all? No. Do I care? Also no.
Dot and Bubble (A) - I LOVED the way this episode played against expectations. You expect it to be like: Lindy is a shallow person wrapped up in the virtual world but learns to engage with reality and become a hero. But like, no. She manages to survive, but she sucks, lmao. And all the people in her world suck. It was a twist that didn't feel unearned (I think the whiteness of everyone on the social media platform is a giant neon sign pointing to the ending) and also made the episode memorable.
Rogue (A-) -What a FUN episode. Absolutely CLASSIC episodic monster story. Also a 'single episode romance that ends tragically' for the Doctor isn't new, but the romance being a man was a good change to make it feel fresh. My only complaint is that it felt like Ruby was a bit too sidelined and in such a short season it feels like every moment she's not on screen is wasting the limited time we have to get to know her.
The Legend of Ruby Sunday (B+) - A decent episode and it was fun to see Rose, Kate and Mel again. The S Triad mystery was also pretty intriguing. (I was convinced for a while that Susan was actually a anthromorphized TARDIS who somehow went evil.) However, the episode relied way too much on handwaving technology stuff with the Time Window that I just did not get.
Empire of Death (A-) - Satisfying conclusion to the Sutekh stuff anchored by a really great performance from Ncuti. The reveal of Ruby's mom just being... an ordinary person was great. She was only significant because people imbued her with significance. We create meaning out of things that maybe don't have meaning. Also nice change of pace from characters needing to be The Most Special Being Ever.
Overall thoughts: The shortened season was a major bummer. I think it robbed us of more of the filler type episodes that can do a lot to build the Doctor and Companion characters and also develop the bond between them. So like... only having 8 episodes with them made the final episode feel kinda unearned?? I think we needed more time seeing them being bestie for their goodbye scene to feel believable. In spite of that, Millie was completely charming as Ruby and Ncuti was a powerhouse of an actor. An excellent Doctor!
WELCOME BACK RTD DOCTOR WHO!

omg. speaking as someone who was likewise obsessed with avon stringer dynamic as a teen you do need to rewatch psspsssspss
ok I feel like a wire renaissance/rewatch season is upon us. First you’re rewatching it. And then Peter Capaldi cites it as one of his favorite shows. And then I find out alexei navalny viewed it as his political bible (which lol because he was also very racist?). Anyway it’s in the winds I feel it coming

What's a TV show or movie you plan to re-watch this year? We're still rewatching our way through Doctor Who - have finally made it to the Peter Capaldi Doctor which were seasons we never watched because we gave up (because Steven Moffat). Goal is to make it through the timeline before the new season airs in May (very excited about Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor - also Russell T. Davies writing again)
Whats a book or fic you will probably re-read this year? Currently rereading (relistening to) Red White and Royal Blue because I'm cranky and RWRB is soothing.
What is a song you will likely continue to play on repeat? I've been relistening to old playlists lately, so Melissa Etheridge maybe?
What's a tasty treat you look forward to eating more of this year? hmmm, pasta maybe? I think I need more pasta in my life.
What's a time sink that you will continue to sink time into this year? AO3 and Tumblr
Did you pick up any habits in 2023 that you plan to continue? not any good ones
What's your toxic trait? Under reacting to things (my partner over reacts - mostly we balance each other out, but sometimes it gets messy)
What is a coping mechanism you will continue to indulge in this year? reading and writing fic
Tell me something you like about how you look! I'm quite fond of my tits. I'm shallow sometimes.
Give me at least three adjectives describing things you like about yourself. thoughtful, generous, sarcastic

it really does get truly difficult for me to get through some of the moffat era writing. it's actually depressing how exhausted steven's making me of my own special interest. I need to rewatch 10 or something. at least capaldi makes 12 worth it. he's such a brilliant doctor that I actually CAN stand and get through his seasons, and I adore Clara. (hes actually one of my favorite doctors ever up there with 10 & 9) but GOD. 11's episodes are just so hard for me to get through especially since I DONT like Amy or rory (we're calling him Face of Blevins) that much. I'm so TIRED. and can I be honest with you all. is this a safe space. I haven't seen a single episode involving 13.

Potato Tweet: If I want to watch the new season of Doctor Who but stopped watching sometime while Peter Capaldi was the Doctor, so I need to watch everything I’ve missed?
Like, as far as I remember there was little overlaps between seasons. There might be some comments and jokes I won’t get. I might not know why the equivalent of a severed hand in a box is so important. I might be unfamiliar with some monsters or side characters inserted into the narrative in the previous seasons.
To be honest, I’d probably have to rewatch all the Capaldi-episodes as well. All I remember is the horrible “what happens to people after they get cremated” episode and the Doctor riding a tank while playing an e-guitar…
edit: But really, if you’ve watched all the episodes since Capaldi took over, please share your opinion on that. I’d be super grateful.
