I made my own pain and fatigue scale charts. Because I'm so adept at overcoming my symptoms the normal pain scale doesn't really work for me. I adjusted my numbers so that I could change the number into something I could tell a doctor when they inevitably ask me to rate my pain.

So these charts I made them for showing people and using them to talk about my pain. The numbers are just sort of a reference point . The words are what's important. The fact that it is a relationship is what's significant.

I've got chronic pain and chronic fatigue. I'm never not in pain and I'm never not tired. These are based on the main pain and fatigue scales that I usually get shown at places that aren't specialized in treating pain or fatigue.

I use these when talking to my family, using the number that relates to the mine side. I use these with my non pain doctors who don't treat my pain or fatigue. I use the Drs number when talking to Drs. Anything that in those X spots is also 10. Drs don't like pain larger than 10 because they think you're faking it.

I made these after getting covid. It was about a year later and I still couldn't describe my pain in terms of the standard scale because I couldn't conceptualize pain properly because covid had completely broken my internal perception of pain intensity. Because I went from never having gone to 10/10 or ever being there for very long to about 2 weeks of what I could only describe as 13/10 pain. It was logarithmically higher than anything I my brain could process. And my brain didn't process it. I just sort of cried a lot, slowly.

If you are ever using a personalized pain scale or something you found online with a doctor you should show them what you're talking about. You need to make sure they understand you.

I posted this because I was having a hard time saying that while I was at a 3 in terms of abilities, I was in just as much pain as when I had been previously at a 5. I needed something that showed what I was talking about.

It feels very strange adding all these disclaimers so far after, but I've been thinking "it's too late" every time Ive realized someone might use it in a way that wouldn't help them. And then ignoring the problem for a while.

We've got 3k notes on this. People keep looking at it. The disclaimers are nessesary. I'm sorry they weren't there before.

I just remembered that I specifically made this because I needed to be able to point at a number and have my parents be able to know what that meant. They don't have training in the pain scale. They don't know what it means. But they do know what I mean now when I say I'm at a 6. They understand me.

The point is, this says that it's used for talking to doctors and it's really not. It's for my family mostly. And my PCP who keeps asking what pain I'm at and I just need to say a number that communicates the thing she wants to know (that's why the Drs thing is on there. That's the number she needs. She doesn't care. It's weird. She's weird.)

But it is mostly for my family. It's for describing how I'm doing.

Do not use this in emergencies!!! Do not use this with pain specialists without showing it to them!!!

OKAY I DID IT, I FIGURED OUT THE LAYOUT

Disclaimer: it seems like the size of the ship changes every time we see it, but the newest eps vs wano seem pretty consistent so I went with that and used Wire's height for scale

Floor layouts under the cut ✂️

Layout based on the 31 member crew that Oda confirmed. I also took in to account that a significant portion of the members are fucking massive, so everything is bigger which matches the scale it's drawn in. Floors are approx 5m high with 2m wide doors in most places, which makes sense when a good portion of the crew are 3m tall.

Sorry about my handwritting lmao I'm so tired but I have serious brainworms and couldn't sleep

The specifics:

Kid's Floor

Of course he has his own floor

Quarters include his own private dining space which I imagine would also include a workdesk, bedroom with king sized bed and probably a couch, walk in closet, and bathroom definitely large enough for a massive tub

Workshop also has bathroom entrance for when he's feelin lazy

Ladder space in the middle goes straight through, this is so crew going to the castle deck don't access his floor

Commander's floor

Heat, Wire and Killer have their own rooms and a private lounge just for them and Kid

Heat and Wire share a large bathroom, definitely big enough for normal bath

Heat and Killer have king sized beds, Wire's bed is almost as wide as a king but mostly it's made especially long

Small decking that runs the whole way around, unspoken rule that crew aren't allowed there since windows peer into commander's rooms

Killer could probably fit a drumkit in his room 👀

Cannon Deck

We get peeks of this in the anime and in Oda's notes but they're fuzzy so I just did my best

Made a mistake tho, cannon platform should be whole way around back like a U shape to account for 3 cannons facing backwards, total 9 cannons

Theoretically this is where the helm should be so uh that's where I put it

Screenshots make it look like they also store a lot of other weapons here

Main deck

Forecastle includes navigation room with bookcases, central table, and desk for paperwork

Forecastle also has infirmary with two longer than normal beds to account for larger crewmates, and a desk for crew doctor to keep notes

Door between nav and infirmary cos Kid is lazy

Kitchen and pantry. Given the rooms are 5m from floor to ceiling I imagine that pantry would have a small mezzanine accessed by a ladder to take advantage of vertical space (and would be a sick place to nap)

Galley/dining hall contains 3 bench style tables, seating 10 large crewmates each, with one extra fancy chair at the end of one for Kid

Lower deck

Did my best to do some math to figure out how many larger than normal beds were required and decided on 6 bunks for 12 larger crewmates

Additional rooms for average sized crewmates include 4 rooms with 2 bunks each, and one room with 1 bunk, making for a total of 30 beds below deck. That means, counting the commanders for the 31, there are currently 3 empty beds, so a few rooms aren't complete full

Probably looks like fuck all space but its actually significant for a ship living quarters

According to google you only need 1 toilet per 10 people and 1 shower per 40 but that seems like BS. Bathroom has 4 large, accessible sized toilets, 4 showers, long benches down the center and a long counter with plenty of space and mirrors for makeup, given how many crewmates wear it

Also, storage room. Could be converted to extra room for another bunk

Hold

Access via ladder

4 cells. No toilets, you get a bucket ✌️ tbh might not even have beds but there's room for em anyway

Desk in case they need to keep an eye on prisoners

3 storage rooms, but i think one of these would actually be a torture room. Probably the one by the desk.

Mechanisms for power and water are probably in one of these rooms as well as a lot of materials for ship repairs

Also of note

Crows nest is definitely big enough for a bench, definitely big enough for... activities. Not as big as the Sunny's though I dont think a gym would fit, I think it'd be more likely that gym equipment is kept on the cannon deck

Idk if the mizzenmast is supposed to go all the way through but that physically can't happen with where the helm needs to be based on screenshots so ✌️

Crows nests are definitely access via climbing nets

I finally published the project for my dice roll scarf that went viral last month. If you love dice games, you'll enjoy knitting this pattern.

The color work in this project is determined by an algorithm, a set of rules that determine the final outcome. There isn't an exact set of instructions for this project. Instead, the knitter uses four 10-sided dice or a random number generator to pick the length of the colorwork in each row.

The result is a staggered stripe sequence along the edge of the shawl. There are trillions of unique outcomes, so no two projects turn out exactly alike. The pattern uses about 500 yards of yarn in total, but the amount of each color that you'll need is randomly determined. Before publishing, I wanted to find out the minimum and maximum amount of each color required to make the project and the probability of each outcome.

The knowledge needed to calculate the yardage was a bit beyond my skill level, but my friend Mary W. Martin helped me gather this info. I used an online probability calculator to find out the probability of each unique stitch count. The results are slightly different depending on whether you use four 10-sided dice (blue) or pick a random number (yellow), but 99% of all possible results fall within a very small range.

It was an interesting little tangent, but not hugely important to the actual knitting pattern. I can, however, confidently say there is a >99.9% chance that you'll need a 2nd skein of the main color. If you want to know more about the math, you should check out my project notes on Ravelry.

The thick and thin striped colorwork is created with a super simple "long stitch" technique. The pattern looks great in fluffy mohair or contrasting colors of basic wool and the instructions include some basic tips for substituting yarns or changing the gauge.

Finished Size: 18 x 68” (46 x 172 cm) rectangular wrap.

Yarn: Approx. 315 yards (288 m) of MC and approx. 264 yards (241 m) of CC. Yardage may vary, see notes on yardage below and yardage chart in photos.

• Main Color (2 skeins) - JMR Studio Worsted Weight Mohair, 245 yards (225 m) per 4 oz; 78% Mohair, 13% Wool, 9% Nylon.

• Contrast Color (1 skein each, both yarns held together) - JMR Studio Fingering Weight Mohair, 320 yards (293 m) per 100g; 63% Silk, 23% Kid Mohair, 11% Nylon, 3% Polyester Held with Lavender Lune Yarn Co. Suri Alpaca, 328 yards (300 m) per 50g; 74% Suri Alpaca, 26% Silk.

Yardage: The amount of each color used for this pattern fluctuates based on the random numbers used to determine the stitch pattern. MC uses approx. 233 to 315 yards (213 to 288m) and CC uses approx. 182 to 264 yards (166 to 241m). 99% of possible results fall within a much smaller range. The Yardage Chart shows the distribution of all potential yardage outcomes.

Needles: Size 8 (5 mm) straight needles, or size needed to obtain gauge. NOTE: Straight needles work best with long stitches. Circular needles with a thin cord allow the long stitches to tighten and stretch, making them harder to manipulate.

Gauge: 12 sts x 14 rows = 4 x 4” (10 x 10 cm) square in pattern.

Other Materials: 10 sided die or random number generator, stitch marker, scale, tapestry needle.

Generating numbers: In my sample, I used four ten-sided dice (D10) to choose a number between 4 and 40 sts. If you don't have dice, you can use an online app like RANDOM.org to generate your numbers. If you follow this link, you'll get a list of 63 integers between 4 and 40. NOTE: Each time you visit the link or refresh the page, the list changes. You can also just choose numbers as you knit.

Danyal Al Ghul: Incorrect Quotes and Miscellaneous Thoughts

Incorrect quotes-style snippets specifically for my danyal al ghul au here (which i really need to come up with a unique au name for atp). Because I thought it'd be funny. And also some miscellaneous headcanons thrown into the mix. Some context for the au: - Danyal is 5 years older than Damian (so 10 and 15) - Danny faked his death when he was 10. Talia knows and helped him with it. - Jazz, Sam, and Tucker do not know he's an ex-assassin.

Lilo and Stitch is Danny's favorite Disney movie. He watched it when he was 11 with Jazz when she was attempting to connect with him, and by this point Danny was becoming receptive to her efforts. They had a movie marathon in the living room one night.

Safe to say? It resonated with his little 11 year old heart strongly, and he related very strongly with both Nani and Stitch. He got unexpectedly emotional and hid in his room for the rest of the night. Jazz felt really bad, but it had the intended (but kinda unexpected) effect of him trying to be nicer to her afterwards.

Funny contrast I realized between Danyal and Vlad that iirc I haven't pointed out yet is that imo, Danyal doesn't rely on his powers nearly half as much as canon Danny does. He falls back instinctually on his League training, and thus sometimes forgets to use his powers in battle. This was prevalent especially early on when he was still getting used to the whole 'halfa' thing.

He incorporates them more often after a year, but still for the most part relies on his own physical hand-to-hand combat. He trusts those skills much more than he does his powers. I'm not sure where he is on a technical level compared to canon, but just to stay safe I'll say he's similar in power skill as canon Danny. Perhaps a little more finessed than him because his League training would probably have him trying to figure out his powers as soon as possible.

But in summary? Danny is strong in hand-to-hand combat, weak in powerset.

Meanwhile Vlad is the opposite. I can't recall if he even knows hand-to-hand in canon, but it makes total sense to me that Vlad Masters wouldn't because he's so confident in his monetary influence and ghost abilities that he sees no need for it.

And he's kinda got some merit behind it. He's very powerful and has 20 years of experience to experiment and fine tune his powers. He's got bite to follow up his bark. He's perfected long-range combat and his ability to phase through walls makes it impossible to corner him, but if you can manage it, then one good hit could probably knock him on his ass.

So in summary, Vlad is strong in powerset, weak in hand-to-hand combat.

And it casts a good contrast between the two of them in that regard. Danny, as a fellow halfa, can follow Vlad when he phases through walls and is fast enough to land a hit on him. His league training as an assassin, albeit rusty, is still deep ingrained enough in him that he can hold up as a rather veritable threat against Vlad without needing his powers.

But Vlad can force Danny to use his powers more often through use of his own. The duplication is the first thing to come to mind: Danny's fast enough to dispel them on his own without powers, and smart enough that he could figure out who the real one is if given a few minute. But that's not always efficient enough.

Good foils for each other that way. Also Vlad's Plasmius design mimics Ra's juuust enough that he looks like Ra's knockoff loser second cousin no one talks about, which only fuels Danny's hatred.

Anyone who’s an up-to-date F1 fan knows all about this rivalry, but just in case you don’t, here’s a quick rundown.

It all started in their karting days. Every race they would go wheel to wheel, and often finish right behind the other. They pushed each other, both metaphorically and physically. In one race, a desperate attempt to overtake YN saw Lando Norris taking himself out of the race.

A few years later, the two would be promoted to Formula One, in which Lando signed to Mclaren, and Yn signed to Alpine - a mistake, if you ask me…or any other fan of his. That being said, it wasn’t Yn’s first choice. Mclaren was openly considering Lando Norris AND Yn Ln, but ultimately chose to sign Norris, with Daniel Ricciardo occupying the second seat. This only fed into their rivalry.

During their rookie year, they fought at the back of the pack as they learned the reigns of F1, but as Norris improved throughout the seasons, Yn was left behind. There’s a lot to unpack in regards to that, but in the simplest of terms, his team has constantly prioritized Pierre Gasly, their second driver, despite him being the inferior talent between the two. We’ve seen this happen with other teams, and that never ends well.

All of that leads to this shocking revelation: Yn Ln is joining the Mclaren Formula One Team. While we can’t say for sure how this will play out, we can speculate. Will they move past their differences and become the ultimate team? Or, will they become the next brocedes?

A - Itmf for fics where Wei Wuxian (or someone else) develops a talisman/curse or somehing that shows people's bio relations (maybe to prove he is not a Jiang/to prove the Jins evil/any other reason), and the use of such thing causes secrets and misdeeds of others to turn up. Any kind of chaotic or angsty energy and everyone in shock and trying to manage the damage of their secrets aired out for the audience.

I have no preference over whether Wei Ying turns out to a Wen/actually Jiang/anything else, but it would be great if he finds out he is not all alone in the world in means of blood and is accepted into someone's loving arms. The Lan family angst is cool, but please no Lan Xichen or Lan Zhan's bashing (But everyone else can have a field day)

B - As an alternative, just a modern AU with Wei Ying doing some kind of DNA testing to prove his relations and the concequences/reactions of others is also acceptable.

P.S. I have recently read All Things Belong by kuroi_atropos, amazing work, so i wanted to read something else in this field. Definitely recommend! @shellennium

How did Scratch phrase it again?

The terms of a God Tier permadeath are defined according to the case of the individual - which implies that Heroic and Just are subjective, even to Sburb. It sounds like there might not be any ironclad rules, and that everyone's ruling works differently.

Yes, Scratch appears to be outlining some universal examples here - but what does, say, 'corruption' really mean? There are many equally valid interpretations, and a lot of them are contradictory. Maybe each death uses the definition that makes the most sense to that player.

In any case, I think Vriska's fate is currently meant to be unclear. She's designed from the ground up to be a complex, morally ambiguous character, and you could construct a valid argument for either outcome.

For my part, I'm fully convinced this will resolve as Just. I've been predicting Vriska's death for most of the Act now, and it's extremely fitting for it to happen at Terezi's reluctant hands. All those Incidents are finally coming full circle, and they're coming for her.

True! The fight that Scratch couldn't call was part of a doomed timeline. Its outcome was completely irrelevant to the story - and therefore, there's a good chance that Hussie didn't bother to decide on the victor. Author Theory survives another day!

That makes a lot more sense than my interpretation. I think I was thrown off by Scratch's insistence that Circumstantial Simultaneity is 'not fully comprehensible to a mortal mind'. His use of such phrasing led me to assume that the concept was more complicated than it appeared, leading me to try and puzzle out the 'real' meaning of the term.

So, in a nutshell, circumstantial simultaneity is when multiple sections of reality are linked by shared events, allowing their local timelines to synchronize. Seems straightforward enough.

The semantics here are pretty interesting.

Scratch has stated that there are multiple ways to kill him, which could mean:

That there are multiple scenarios which have a non-zero probability of killing him.

That there are multiple scenarios that would hypothetically cause him to die, if they actually occurred.

These two statements have fairly similar meanings, but, as anon pointed out, there's an important distinction between the two. Statement 1 requires Scratch to actually die in some timelines, but Statement 2 doesn't require him to ever die, in any timeline.

Scratch has stated that he'll only die in one timeline, which means that there is only one scenario that will ever lead to his death. All other scenarios will never lead to his death - and thus, even if they could 'hypothetically' kill him, the probability that they will kill him is zero.

Karkat's leadership shines in times of immediate crisis, which is part of why he struggled to keep his team together in the Veil. He doesn't know how to motivate people without an immediate, in-your-face threat - but since his ancestor was leading a rebellion, that probably wasn't an issue for him. The threat was omnipresent.

In short, I think Karkat Senior was always in Vantas Panic Mode. He'd have spearheaded Alternia's first rebellion with vim, vigor, seemingly infinite stamina, and sheer, bloody-minded determination - and if he was anything close to as likeable as Karkat, folk heroism was virtually inevitable. I can't wait to learn more!

It would explain why both Vriska and Aradia got them, but John didn't. The trolls have a lot in common with insects, so it stands to reason that in their culture, an insect's metamorphosis would be associated with divine apotheosis.

And yeah, a lot of Gamzee's schtick seems to be focused on obfuscating what he's actually doing. The real smoking gun there was the near-complete loss of Terezi's deductive abilities, at the exact moment Gamzee should have entered her radar.

There's such an interesting untold story here, about how the early trolls might have cyberized a formerly symbiotic species, and essentially made them its slaves.

I've always been interested in how, exactly, the trolls developed their symbioses, and what they might have looked like before Alternian civilization became what it is today.

We've talked a lot about how I believe Scratch's 'dark pockets' represent information that Hussie hasn't decided on yet. It's admittedly a little difficult to reconcile that with the fact that Void, an in-universe Aspect, is strongly implied to be the source of at least some of these pockets.

Maybe Aspects can work on a meta level, as well as a literal one. Like, perhaps Void is the aspect of author uncertainty, and therefore, anything that Hussie hasn't decided on out-of-universe is canonically 'hidden by Void'.

True - but at the same time, he knew that Gamzee would still remain at large after his death, and that he, Equius, would no longer be able to protect Nepeta.

Even if she hadn't attacked him immediately, Gamzee would have remained a significant danger to everyone else on the Veil, Nepeta included. Had Equius fought back, he could have ensured that Gamzee would never be able to harm her.

Oh, for sure - that's definitely correct outside of Homestuck. But within the comic, they really might be the only ways to die that Sburb considers 'dramatic' enough to be permanent.

Outside of the God Tier system, though, anything goes. After all, Equius was slain by a villain, and he didn't exactly die a hero.

I'm pretty sure the troll session was closer to a 'typical' length.

According to Karkat, the human Reckoning arrived significantly sooner than normal - I assume this was due to Jack's double regicide.

If the human session had gone more smoothly, I imagine that it, too, would have taken several weeks. Like the trolls, the kids would have been able to hang out in person - and unlike the trolls, it probably wouldn't have devolved into multiple homicides.

The MAN Experiment

This report details the process and results of the Marlboro Addiction Neuroscience (MAN) experiment performed by the Fumo Transfigurator Institute (FTI).

Observation

Can addiction be formed if the subject believes they cannot become addicted?

Hypothesis

If the subject thinks they cannot become addicted to nicotine, they will not become addicted to nicotine.

Experiment

The subject will take a placebo drug each day over a hundred days. They will be placed on a strict smoking schedule over the hundred days, as follows:

Evaluation will be done to determine whether the subject is addicted. Subject is required to log with video evidence that they have smoked the required daily limit. The subject can smoke anytime during the day, but must smoke right after waking up and right before going to bed.

Log

Day 0

We met with the subject (male, 27yo). We went over the expectations of the experiment and made sure he was aware of the risks. Communication is as follows:

FTI: “Have you ever smoked before?”

Subject: “No.”

FTI: “Do your parents smoke?”

Subject: “No.”

FTI: “Do you have siblings that smoke?”

Subject: “No.”

FTI: “Do you have friends that smoke?”

Subject: “Just one.”

FTI: “What is their name?”

Subject: “His name is -redacted-.” (Friend will be talked about further in the report. From this point forward, friend’s name will be referred to as Alpha.)

FTI: “How long have you known Alpha?”

Subject: “We were friends in high school, so about 12 years. We have stayed in touch.”

FTI: “How often do you see Alpha?”

Subject: “Not often. Maybe once a month. Since he smokes and I don’t, I don’t invite him over a lot. I don’t really care for the smell. He also drinks a bit and I’m not much of a drinker.”

FTI: “You are aware of the expectations of the experiment?”

Subject: “Yes.”

FTI: “Our drug helps prevent addiction. Do you want to be a smoker?”

Subject: “No.”

FTI: “Do you believe you will become an addicted smoker?”

Subject: “No. Not with your drug and my willpower.”

The subject began the experiment the following day. Next check in

Note: Subject was paid $1,000 per week for their willingness to participate in our experiment.

Day 11

We met with the subject after the first 10 days. We went over the daily log videos. We noted that the first three days included a lot of coughing and resistance. The subject did not want to smoke them. The remaining days appeared to be easier for the subject, but the subject said he still did not want to smoke.

We noted the subject had grown a beard. We asked the subject if it was related to the smoking. Subject stated: “Smoking first thing in the morning has interrupted my morning routine.”

Prior to our meeting, the subject had smoked just one cigarette. We reminded them that he had to now smoke four a day. On a scale of 1 to 10 for addiction, the subject rated a 1. He didn’t feel like he wanted to or needed to smoke.

Day 21

We met with the subject after another 10 days of smoking 4 cigarettes a day. We went over the daily video logs and verified the subject complied with the requirements. We noted the subject rarely coughed. The subject schedule was smoking two before work and the remaining two in the evening. We noted that the subject had gained 5.6 pounds since the start of the experiment. His comment in regards to the weight gain: “I found it is easier to smoke if I’m having a beer in the evening. Also, I guess I have been splurging a little more with junk food. Guess I justify a bad habit with another. Like, what’s the point?”

The subject had already smoked two prior to the meeting and was aware he had to smoke four more today to meet the expectations. On a scale of 1 to 10 for addiction, the subject still rated a 1.

Day 31

We met with the subject after 10 days of smoking 6 cigarettes a day. We went over the video logs. We identified that the subject appeared to enjoy his smoke breaks at work and provided a sense of relief. The subject stated when we pointed this out “I guess I like to be able to step outside and the rest of the world kind of stops.”

We noted that the subject had cut his hair shorter. He stated that he was receiving comments at work about him smelling like smoke. He didn’t want them to know that he is participating in this experiment, so he thought shorter hair would prevent this as there would be less hair for the smoke to stick to.

The subject has also gained a total of 10.1 pounds since the start of the experiment. He has increased his beer and junk food intake.

The subject had already smoked 4 cigarettes prior to our meeting. He said he knows that he is expected to smoke another 4 today. The subject rated a 2 out of 10 in regards to addiction. We asked if the subject would like to quit the experiment and he said he still wants to “stick through it”.

Day 41

We met with the subject after smoking 8 cigarettes a day over the last 10 days. We observed the video logs and noticed the subject was smoking a few with someone else. This individual was his friend Alpha. The subject was spending more time with Alpha. Conversation regarding this change is as follows:

FTI: “Why have you been spending more time with Alpha?”

Subject: “One reason I didn’t hang out with Alpha was to our different lifestyles. Now that I am smoking, spending time is more enjoyable as we both outside for smoking.”

FTI: “Do you enjoy smoking with Alpha?”

Subject: “If I’m being honest, yes. It is like an added connection with our friendship.”

FTI: “Did you tell him about the experiment?”

Subject: “Yes.”

FTI: “What were his thoughts? Did he think the drug was working?”

Subject: “He didn’t think it was, but I believe that it is.”

The subject had only smoke 2 prior to our meeting but knew he had to smoke 10. He stated: “Alpha is coming over for a few beers later this evening and wanted to save majority of my daily limit today so I can smoke when he smokes.”

We identified that he refers to his daily smoke expectations as “limits” now. When asked if he would smoke more than his set scheduled expectations if allowed, he said maybe. We ensured him to stick to the schedule.

Subject’s beard has grown larger.

Out of a scale of 10, he stated he was still at a 2. We are not sure if he is being honest or is in denial.

Day 51

We met with the subject. He smelled like cigarette smoke. He said he didn’t notice the smell anymore on him. He even said he was starting to not care anymore if he smelled like a smoker. The subject even said he started smoking inside his house for convenience. The subject said he quit his job as he didn’t like having to wait for smoke breaks at work. His friend Alpha is getting him a job at his road construction company. The subject has been spending most evening drinking and smoking with Alpha. We asked the subject the following questions:

FTI: “Do you see yourself as a smoker?”

Subject: “I guess. I am planning on quitting once this experiment is over.”

FTI: “Have you enjoyed smoking?”

Subject: “Honestly, yes. I see the appeal.”

FTI: “Do you think the drug is working?”

Subject: “Yes. I can quit anytime.”

FTI: “Do you want to quit now?”

Subject: “No. I want to finish the experiment.”

We asked the subject if we could call his friend Alpha. He agreed. Our conversation went as follows:

FTI: “Good afternoon, Alpha. This is FTI - we are the ones conducting the experiment on your friend.”

Alpha: “Hi there.”

FTI: “Do you think your friend is addicted to smoking?”

Alpha: “Yeah, most definitely.”

FTI: “What makes you say that?”

Alpha: “He always suggests we take a smoke break. He lights up whenever he wants or needs to.”

FTI: “Our drug prevents addiction though.”

Alpha: “Well, your drug don’t work.”

FTI: “When the experiment is over, will you support your friend on quitting?”

Alpha: “Probably not. The man’s a smoker. I don’t see him quitting anytime soon.”

We asked the subject what he thought about his friend’s answers. He had no comment.

The subject is starting 14 cigarettes a day. When reminded of this, the subject said “Sounds good. I’m already halfway through for the day.”

The subject had gained additional weight and has shaven his head. He said his friend Alpha suggested it.

Day 61

The subject appeared hungover. He said he had a late night with the co-workers, including Alpha. He admitted that he smoked more than his “limit”. We told him he had to stick to the set schedule and he was displeased, but said he would try his best.

The subject had gained more weight from his drinking. He said he enjoys the “taste of a cold beer and a Red.”

The meeting was short. He acted like he was in a rush. As soon as we dismissed him, we watched him light up a cigarette when exiting our facility.

Day 71

The subject initially did not appear for the meeting. When called, he said he didn’t see the point anymore. He knew he wasn’t addicted, but didn’t need to prove it. He reminded us he could quit anytime. We reminded him of the payment, but only agreed to come in if we supplied him with the cigarettes he would need for the next 10 days.

The subject came in and grabbed his 8 packs of Marlboro Reds.

The subject smelled of smoke and his voice was starting to sound raspy. He coughed occasionally. We asked him why he continued to grow out the beard. He said he can sometimes smell the smoke on it and that he likes it.

Day 81

The subject told us that he thought the drug was still working, but wondered if FTI would be interested in a longer study to really prove the effectiveness of the drug. We said that the 100 days will be more than enough data. The subject appeared disappointed and said, “Oh - guess it is just 20 more days of this then.”

We asked him how addicted did he think he was. He thought about it for a while until he said “5 out of 10, but I think I can still quit.”

The scientists conducting the experiment discussed after the subject left whether it was moral and ethical to continue on. We discussed whether the subject should be given the option to quit before he became even more addicted. Our lead scientist stated, “To be honest, it is probably already too late. At the end of the experiment, we will give him resources to quit.”

Day 91

We showed the subject a photo of himself at the start of the experiment. We asked him what advice he would give himself at the start of the experiment.

Subject: “Do it man - the drug works and you get to try smoking for 100 days.”

We asked the subject if he truly believe the drug worked. He said, “Sure. I’ll quit eventually.”

We asked him if he was ready to quit after the next 10 days. His reply was “I will quit, eventually.”

Day 101

The subject came in. He still smelled like he was smoking. We asked him if he had smoked today and he said, “Yeah - but I kind of forgot the experiment ended.”

We told the subject the truth and that the drug was a placebo. We expected him to get angry, but he wasn’t. After delivering the news, we asked him to honestly rate how addicted he was. He said “10 out of 10”.

We provided him resources to call and offered him nicotine patches to help him quit. He refused both. He said he will probably quit eventually, he he just wasn’t ready. He enjoyed his new life and that he had never felt more free or manly. We asked him how many he had smoked so far today. He stated he had already smoked a whole pack and that he was looking forward to not having a limit anymore. He said he only was friends with Alpha and that his friends disapproved of his new smoking habit.

He said he needed a smoke and left the meeting. We followed him to the parking lot and said we needed one final photo. He stuck his cigarette in his mouth and smiled.

Conclusion

We conclude that a man will become addicted even when he thought he couldn’t. We stand by our research ethically because the subject did not regret starting. He even thanked us for the pleasure.
