Baby Kicks Pt. 3 [Final]

genre: first-time parents au, established relationship, fluff 18+
summary: Jungkook sings his son to sleep.

Tumblr media
Jungkook doesn’t think he could be more in love with you.
You’re exhausted, your hair clings to your forehead and you’re tearing up at the sight of your son wrapped in his blanket with his tiny blue hat on his head.
Jungkook hovers nearby, his camera in his hands as he snaps more photos. A nurse offers to take a photo of the three of you, and his heart soars.
There are three of you now.
Pride fills his chest as he carefully gets into the bed with you, one foot on the floor to keep himself steady as he drapes his arm over your shoulder. He smiles at you, whispering “I love you.”
The flash of the camera distracts you, but Jungkook kisses you sweetly as the flash goes off a few more times.
It’s late.
Baby Jeon had decided to come in the wee hours of the morning. The moon casts its glow from the window, and the silence in the hallways is comforting.
Jungkook takes his son from your arms as the nurse helps you out of bed. He carries his baby, sleeping soundly in his arms as he sits on the uncomfortable recliner that sticks to his bare back when he sits.
“You gave me the best of me,” Jungkook sings softly as he holds his son to his chest. “So you’ll give you the best of you.”
You watch Jungkook and Mini-Me as you get back on the bed. This had been a long nine months waiting for your son’s arrival. All the pain of birth didn’t even faze you now as you saw your husband rocking his child.
Jungkook’s soft singing makes your heart flutter. You know Jungkook has a playlist ready at home once you and Mini-Me are discharged from the hospital. You didn’t let anyone know you were going into labor, except Jimin. Blackjack was with him, waiting for news of his nephew’s arrival.
You wanted to have quiet. A few days to adjust to being three Jeons instead of two.
When you’ve settled into bed, Jungkook lays his son in the bassinet, pushing it beside you. He then gets in bed with you, making sure he can get out once you’re asleep.
“He’s perfect,” you whisper, covering your mouth as you yawn.
“You’re perfect,” Jungkook counters, smiling.
“Sing for me,” you tell him as he brushes your hair off your forehead while you curl into his side. He hopes you’ll be able to sleep well. You’ve gone so long without sleep, and he wishes he could take you home to sleep in your bed.
“Any requests?” Jungkook asks as he laces his fingers with yours.
“Surprise me,” you murmur, eyes nearly shut as you welcome sleep.
“I'd spend ten thousand hours and ten thousand more. Oh, if that's what it takes to learn that sweet heart of yours,” Jungkook sings quietly, smiling when you snore softly moments later.
Nothing could bring him more happiness than having his family complete, all that was missing was Blackjack, and he’d be meeting Mini-Me soon.
Perhaps, the two of you should name your son before leaving the hospital, but sleep is calling Jungkook.
Carefully, he unravels himself from you. He turns the mood lamp on, watching the lights on the ceiling until he’s fast asleep.
In the morning you’ll decide on your son’s name and frame the first picture of you as a family.

november 5, 2018 san diego, california orion
Spending my 22nd birthday going to visit my new oncologist was not my plan. I hadn’t made much effort to make it happen, but I was hoping to just have a night out in LA with Emelia, her roommates, and some of my classmates. I already had a reservation set up at my favorite rooftop bar for ten people.
I knew Cal had a show — Amsterdam — so I didn’t expect to get to spend it with him. I figured he’d call me after he got offstage while I was out with my friends and I’d answer, tipsy from a few too many espresso martinis, and it would be sweet and everyone with me would think it was so cute that he was so busy but still so present in our relationship.
Clearly, nothing like that is happening today. The only thing that’s the same is Emelia. She’s coming over tonight. I think my moms are getting us all Thai food and we’ll watch a movie or play a game, and I think we’ll have a bonfire, but the night is looking very differently than what I’d planned months ago. Today is the day I find out how chemo went and whether or not I get to live a little longer.
While Mama drives to the hospital, she and Mom are talking about something I stopped paying attention to a long time ago. I’m grateful both of them are coming with me to learn about my fate. My mind is just spinning and I can’t even pin down a single thought, so I find myself distracting my brain by doomscrolling on social media and reading happy birthday texts.
From: kaykay (5sos groupies) happy birthday orion! miss ya and love ya! From: crystal (5sos groupies) baby o!!!! we miss you so so much! we’ll all be home soon and want to see your sweet face if you’ll have us. happy birthday ❤️ From: sierra (5sos groupies) sweet orion!! missing you more than ever! happiest of birthdays to the prettiest of girls ❤️
Macy tagged me in an Instagram story of a collage of pictures we have together—random chemo selfies, the night we celebrated her being cancer free, and the tour sendoff party that happened what feels like a lifetime ago. “MOST BEAUTIFUL BIRTHDAY GIRL EVER! LOVE YOU LONG TIME TY FOR BEING THE BEST” she wrote on top of the photo.
Emelia posted a carousel of our pictures from the past three years, including a very cringey one of us on the first day of class freshman year. We’d somehow shown up to class wearing nearly identical outfits and we decided we were destined to be friends, which was a correct assessment. The most recent one was last week at the beach, when we had a sunset picnic. “Strongest, bravest, kindest, most passionate (and stubborn) girl on the planet. Happy birthday to my soul sister. There’s no one who loves like you and I love having your love in my life. 22 is no match for you! ‘Til death, my friend.”
Ashton has a photo of us getting gelato in Rome two years ago. I think Giuseppe took the picture, but the memory is blurry. All I remember is how divine my pistachio gelato tasted and how jealous Ash was of how much better mine was than his. In the picture, I’m happily taking a lick from mine while Ashton pouts at me, holding his cup of banana gelato that he’d hardly touched. His caption is short and sweet. “Happy birthday to the best girl I know (sorry @kaykay).”
I don’t follow him anymore, but I pull up Cal’s profile to see if he’s posted any stories or anything else today. When his profile picture indicates that he has posted a story I haven’t viewed, out of habit, I check it. Even if he checks who’s viewed it, I’ll only be one of literal thousands, so I doubt he’ll be able to see me as a viewer. He posted a picture of himself on stage last night, and today, he just took a screenshot of listening to 22 by Taylor Swift on Spotify.
He’s saying happy birthday, even if he isn’t.
From: paula (lavapies forever) HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY FAV ESTADOUNIDENSE!!! love you miss you!!!  From: giuseppe (lavapies forever) oh!! happy birthday orion!!! how did I end up in this group chat….. ? From: marta (lavapies forever) feliz cumple, orion!! te echo de menos!!!  From: ilse (lavapies forever) HAPPY BDAY ORION! ❤️ From: paula (lavapies forever) giu you’re one of the girlies sorry
I haven’t texted the “5SOS groupies” back yet, and am uncertain of whether or not I will, but I do text back my former flatmates (and Giuseppe).
To: lavapies forever muchisimas gracias!!!! miss you all!!! also, have some news for you guys From: ilse (lavapies forever) FINALLY From: paula (lavapies forever) when were you gonna tell us you guys broke up!!!!!! what happened?!?!?!? From: marta (lavapies forever) seriously! how could you not tell us?! but yes what happened we are dying to know the details From: giuseppe (lavapies forever) oh yeah fran asked if i knew anything but obviously i do not  To: lavapies forever so… its not so much that i need to tell you about the breakup? i don’t know how else to say it than to just say it so i’m just gonna say it i have leukemia so cal and i broke up i’m actually on my way to the doctor rn to see how my chemotherapy treatments went
When the group chat activity halts, I know they’re now all confused and in shock. My friends aren’t exactly known for not having something to say. I leave the WhatsApp app to give them time to process and go to my regular messages to see who else has reached out.
From: lucas Hey, O. Just popping in to say happy birthday! Sent you a Venmo—have a martini on me. Hope you’re doing okay!
Every other notification is just miscellaneous family members and a few classmates who are just as out of the loop as the general public is on what’s happening in my life. I guess I should probably share something on my social media about what’s going on. I don’t want the fans to know, but I can tell my classmates and people I actually know. I decide I’ll post something later today, once I’ve heard whatever news that the oncologist is about to share with me.
Right when I’m locking my phone, it starts buzzing with an incoming Facetime from Paula. I tell my moms I’ll be on a call before I answer.
“Hey,” I say as her face fills my screen.
“I wish you’d told me sooner,” is how Paula starts the call.
I frown. “It’s kinda hard to say over text. I’m sorry.”
“So call! Orion, what the hell! This is huge and I don’t know why you wouldn’t think we’d want to know!”
I contemplate what to say next. I should be an expert at this after having to break the news Calum. “If it makes you feel better, I didn’t tell Cal until last month.”
Paula’s mouth drops and I can tell she’s about to dwell on this instead of the actual news. “So he broke up with you?!”
“What? No!” I sigh. “No, I broke up with him.”
Her face contorts with confusion and she shakes her head, the idea rattling around in her brain. “You broke up with him?! Because you have cancer?!”
“Please don’t make me talk about this, Pau, it’s all anyone wants to talk about and I’m tired of it.”
“No! We are going to talk about this! You guys are perfect together and you broke up with him in the middle of a life threatening diagnosis? What the fuck, Orion?”
“Can we talk about this tomorrow?” I beg. “It’s my birthday. I promise I’ll call you tomorrow and I’ll let you know how things went today.”
She groans. “Fine, but only because it’s your birthday!”
“Orion,” Mama says, catching my attention. “We’re here.”
I nod and look back to my phone. “¿Hablaremos mañana?”
Pau nods. “Mañana.”
Paula and I hang up then, and I tuck my phone into the pocket on my black sweatpants. We get out of the car and walk to the door of the cancer center, checking in at the desk and going to the waiting room. I feel like I’ve done all of this a million times now, but I haven’t felt this nervous about it in a long time.
They call my name to come back, and we trudge slowly after the nurse and we sit in a sterile exam room that looks just like every other sterile exam room in the world. While we wait for the doctor to come in, my moms and I sit in silence. I don’t think anyone wants to say anything. I know I don’t.
Five minutes of waiting later and then there’s a knock on the door. My new doctor, Dr. Gupta, walks in with his clipboard and the nurse in tow. He takes a seat on the wheeled stool and moves it closer to me so that we’re only about a foot or two apart.
“Good morning,” he says. “And, happy birthday.”
I give him a tense smile. “Thanks.”
I had to come in last week for another biopsy and a full blood panel again to be able to assess the status of my cancer, so today is literally just to talk about the results. They also have me a full body exam to check my lymphnodes and other symptoms. Given the look on Dr. Gupta’s face from the moment he walked in, whatever he’s going to say isn’t good.
“Orion, there isn’t an easy way to say this, so I’m sorry,” he says, off to a horrible start. “The chemo hasn’t made much of a dent in the leukemia, and I’m afraid it’s progressing.”
I look over at my moms who are clenching their jaws and squeezing each other’s hands. I’ll cry if I watch, so I look back to Dr. Gupta.
“You have options, though. We can continue to try to find you a bone marrow donor, and there are a number of trials that are available, we’d just need to transfer you back to LA.”
I shake my head. “I can’t go back to LA.”
“Honey, you can go back—-“
I cut Mom off. “I’m not doing trials. I can’t. I’m sorry, but I’m not doing something else that will make me feel miserable and we don’t even know if it’s going to work. Besides, I’ll get what, maybe a year or two out of it if they do work?”
I look at Dr. Gupta to confirm, and he pulls his mouth into a slight frown.
“There’s no guarantee on timelines or results, but, roughly, given your case, that’s what we’d be looking at.”
“Right, and I’ll get like… a year, a few months if we just stop doing things?”
Dr. Gupta sighs. “Again, we can’t say for certain, but roughly, yes, about a year.”
“Yeah, I’m not doing anything. Can I go now?” I stand up, grabbing my bag.
“Orion, at least hear about what options—“
I spin around, quickly, to face my moms. “I’m not doing anything.”
They look at me with tears in their eyes, begging me to stay and listen, but I don’t want to.
“I want to go home. I want to live comfortably and just have time with people I care about. It doesn’t matter. I’m going to die anyway. It doesn’t even matter, and I’m not going to LA again.”
We have a silent argument with just our eyes before they look to Dr. Gupta.
“Can we have the pamphlets on the trials? We can discuss this at home and let you know.”
Dr. Gupta quickly hands them the stack of brochures he’s had on top of his clipboard. “You don’t have to decide anything today, and please call me if you have any questions.”
I walk out of the room then. I don’t want to dwell in there and I don’t want to dwell on what I’ve just learned. I can’t think about it. Not today. Maybe tomorrow. I just can’t spend my birthday thinking about it all. Today I’m supposed to celebrate my life, not the impending date of my death.
We’re having a bonfire in the backyard with my family, Emelia, and Macy — complete with gelatin-free marshmallows and a crock pot full of mulled wine — when my phone starts going crazy. I try to ignore it and just enjoy the night with Emelia and Macy, who are listening to and respecting my wishes not to talk about the news of the day. I promise them we’ll talk about it tomorrow.
My phone has probably buzzed twelve times in the past two minutes, and Emelia ends up taking my phone off the arm of the wooden chair I’m sitting in to look at it, apparently annoyed by all the notifications. She unlocks my phone for herself and her eyes grow wider as she looks at whatever notifications I’ve gotten.
“Jesus,” she whispers, scrolling through whatever it is.
“What is it?” Macy asks before she takes another sip of her hot wine.
“Um…” Em says, trailing off, still staring at my phone’s screen.
I hold my hand out for her to give me my phone back, and she pulls it further away from me, her eyes still glued to the bright screen. I can see it’s a text thread with a lot of texts from the other person.
“Give me my phone,” I instruct, holding my hand closer to her.
“It’s not good, are you sure?”
I roll my eyes. “Em, there’s nothing worse than hearing that your chemotherapy didn’t help your terminal cancer on your birthday. I can handle whatever the hell someone texted me.”
She sighs and hands my phone to me. “I warned you.”
I take in what’s on my screen and feel my stomach start to churn. She’s right. It’s not good.
From: mike-o cliff-o yknow what orion, fuck you i don’t give a fuck that it’s your birthday FUCJ YOU my band, my BEST FRIENDS, aren’t speaking because you couldn’t tell the truth thos is your fault calum won’t even LOOK at ash! howrdare you you had no right to come into our lives and fuck up the one thing that matters most to all of us and then just LEAVEW do you know how depressed cxalum is he doesn’t do anything except show up on stage and drink and whineand moanmb he’s a fucking qwreck and that’s on yuo you play this innocnt sweet act that you’re jsut being kind and whatever bllshit you tell yourself but you and i both know you’re actually a shitty person what kind of person doesn’t tell their partner they have CACNDR and then BROAKS UP WITH THEM over it fuck you. i hope it’s terminal. and i hpoe it sucks.
My eyes start to water as I read through everything, but I try to remember that Michael is clearly very drunk.
“No, he doesn’t get to make you cry on your birthday. Give me that, I’m texting a screenshot of that shit to Crystal.” Emelia holds her hand out for my phone again, but I hug it to my chest.
“No, it’s fine. He doesn’t mean it, and he deserves to be mad.”
“What? Who texted you?” Macy asks from my other side. I sigh and hand my phone to her so she can read it all.
“It’s fine, he’s drunk. If that made him feel better to say that, it’s fine.”
Emelia is fuming next to me and watching as Macy’s face gets more and more concerned while she reads what Mike sent. I don’t want to let them sway me. I don’t care what he sent.
“Holy shit, O, that’s not okay,” Macy says while she hands me my phone.
“It’s fine, I don’t care.”
But I do.

Healing wounds on Blood Mountain
Michael parked his speedy Audi in the wooded parking lot for the Byron Reece trailhead. He told me it would lead us up to the top of Blood Mountain, where we would camp for the night. We were in the Chattahoochee National Forest, a place where many hopefuls begin a trek north, traversing the Appalachian Mountains via the AT. And where he and I would try to find some peace among a whirlwind of recent tumult.
He started pulling gear out of the trunk of his car while I examined the wilderness before us, leaves beginning to turn into an autumnal rainbow in the hours before dusk.
I was happy to be with my big brother, the Eagle scout. Death seemed so far from us now. He would lead the expedition and help me excavate my mind from the recent trauma. So I followed him, no questions, just trust, like always.
He had everything packed and ready: water, food for the night (including S'mores makings), first aid kit, sleeping bags, tent, jet boil, toilet paper and a shovel.
I only had a few essentials that I could not forget: special gauze, antibiotics, antibiotic ointment and an elastic band that I could cut to fit over my head and slide down on my neck to keep the weeping wound that was sliced open, beginning under my chin and moving down and over to just below my left ear, from becoming infected.
It was the first time in weeks I had gotten a whiff of the outdoors. After nearly dying on the operation block during a routine wisdom tooth extraction, I wasn't sure I would see anything except what was in front of my hospital bed again, intubation and catheters kept me sedentary for days.
To me, it seemed like this trip to Blood Mountain was just another hike. Although I believe that for Michael, there was a greater purpose. Nature had healed many of his wounds. Maybe he thought this would help to heal mine.
Growing up, Michael was pretty much my second caretaker. In pictures of my baptism, you can see his gleeful, toothy tween smile bobbing to the left and right of my baby self through a series of photos. My sister Molly on the other hand, looks non plussed. Michael was the self-appointed doting older brother, and since day one, he never missed a beat with me.
When mom put me down, Michael would pick me up. He fought with her when I had to have braces with a cage that would keep me from sucking my thumb; he couldn't bear to see me cry so. One summer, when he came home from Emory, he unloaded the "Crocodile Mile" from his truck. At the time, it was the summer must have, a slip-n-slide where you'd run and slide on your belly through a wet Crocodile mouth. Michael was so excited that he spent his first hour home setting it up so my friends and I could have a wild glissade. He even did a run himself.
Hoisting the heavy-looking pack on his big shoulders, Michael made it look easy. His years as a scout taught him to pack light, pack neat, leave no trace and to bring only what is necessary....like S'mores. He double and triple checked that I had all my medical supplies. Even though I was 19 on this outing, mom said he had to watch out for me. I wasn't out of the woods yet. So he worried and stressed so that I wouldn't have to.
It was my first time to Blood Mountain, and this part of Georgia. Since he lived in Atlanta, he thought I could get out of Charlotte and see something different for a while, so he invited me to stay with him, excitedly planning what we could do during this special brother-sister bonding/healing time. A hike seemed in order, nay tradition.
Michael was a boy scout but I was an honorary boy scout, having come from a long line of scouts, including my father and grandfather. As Troop 41's scoutmaster, my dad had already carved out his own legends. He never missed an opportunity to take his family camping, including taking his toddler daughter on treks through some difficult terrain and wilderness in hopes she might come to enjoy it as much as he did.
Michael let me know what the plan was for the night and how we would be reaching the top of Blood Mountain. Our trek would be decent, with a steady elevation to the summit. But the view from above would be worth it. We would be camping on the summit's smooth granite bald, with the wild Appalachian mountains and their broccoli forests spilling out below us.
As we walked, we wondered why it was called Blood Mountain, coming up with all sorts of theories, but none close to some of the more widely accepted reasons, including the fact that near the mountain a sanguine battle between the Cherokee and Creeks in the aptly named Slaughter Gap.
I was a bit weak, so we had to stop more often than we had planned for. We estimated hiking the 5 miles would take about 2 hours, but it took more like 3. We arrived at the summit just as the sun was setting and the cold sinking in.
We set up the tent together. Michael had bought me a compact North Face two-person tent the previous year for Christmas, as I was attending Appalachian State University. He figured it would come in handy. But he also wanted to test out if his notion of a good tent was right, so he asked me to bring it to test out.
Once we got the sleeping bags and mats rolled out, he started on dinner and I worked to carefully disengage the bandages that were stuck on my newly forming neck scar.
At just 19 years old and about to enter my sophomore year at Appalachian State University, my mom decided it was the moment for me to get my wisdom teeth pulled. It did not turn out well.
I was put to sleep but then woke up in the middle of one of my teeth's extraction. I was shaking and moving around, unable to comprehend where I was or what was going on. I remember the oral surgeon yelling "shut up, shut up" and then I succombed to blackness again.
When I woke up, it seemed like a bad dream. Then, four days later, I was admitted to the hospital with a massive abcess, my mother finally surrendering that my blackouts, nausea and fever were caused by something much greater than dry sockets.
My neck was cut open, drained, packing put in and antibiotics administered. My teeth were swabbed with a sponge on a stick and I peed through a catheter. I had a tube down my throat so could not talk, all my needs written on pieces of random paper, things like "don't let the nurse with the crazy eye take my blood sample, she can't find an artery to save her life."
When Michael and Molly arrived, they gave my parents a reprieve from the helter skelter of four days of their youngest child in the Intensive Care Unit. And for me, their youthful presence and jokes between us were a breath of fresh air.
But Michael remained long into the night, as I fell into a dreamland and a tube took over breathing for me, injecting air into my lungs when it deemed my breathing too shallow or not fast enough. Sometimes this foreign jolt into my system would wake me up. After one such awakening, I found that my hand was wrapped in something warm. Michael had fallen asleep in a chair, his head resting next to my right leg, his left hand interlocked with my right. I cried quietly, so grateful for my brother.
in the pink hues of setting sunlight, he asked to see my new scar. I couldn't yet stand to look at it, afraid still that any sudden movement would make my head fall off. He always had an affinity for gross things. He missed his calling as a doctor, we used to joke. But he said it looked good, there was a bit of old puss still clinging to one of the flaps of open neck skin, but overall clean. I put the ointment and gauze back on with the elastic to hold everything in place and we enjoyed our ramen in silence...everything already said, or being said in that moment.
We went to bed, as you do when you're camping, just after we finished eating. Michael hung any food stuff in a nearby tree, just in case bears were around. We got in our sleeping bags, wished each other a good night and dozed off.
I was never good at camp sleeping. Too many new sounds, smells and on this particular night, sights. I woke up to a light so so bright that I roused my sleeping, farting brother. The moon was full and the sky was so clear that it seemed nearly like the sun was rising. We stepped out of the tent to gaze at the moon's silver light, shining upon us. We were its only witnesses, or liked to think we were.
We were beautiful in that moment. Peaceful, my brother and I.

Please help Rowan
https://www.gofundme.com/f/hp3x4-help-me-not-lose-my-home?member=17624197&sharetype=teams&utm_campaign=p_na+share-sheet&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=customer
I know their go fund me looks fully funded but it’s not, that’s the goal that was set back in december and they haven’t updated it. They still need help.
Rowan was kicked from their house in their teens (I’m sorry I’m using they/them because I’m not entirely sure on their pronouns I think it might be he/him but I don’t want to assume) for being queer. They spent some time being homeless and then finally got out of that and went back to school to become a mortician when they got diagnosed with cancer
Since 2020 I’ve been posting in a PMF thread called Passing Time In Chemotherapy: A Diary, which has been equal parts me talking about fighting Stage Four Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and being given two months to live, and equal parts screaming about how horrible the American Healthcare System is and trying to make a case for universal healthcare. Briefly I went into remission and then my cancer returned. I also have Stage 1 breast cancer. These last two weeks I have been in the hospital with a kidney disease likely brought on by my chemotherapy treatments, and a lung disease which I need tests to rule out that it’s lung cancer. The problem is I need $4500 to continue receiving care because I am am several hundred thousands dollars in debt due to my chemotherapy. Each chemo treatment cost me $50k after insurance, which no sane person has, so the debt has built up to the point where I am being held hostage for micropayments in the thousands of dollars range in order to receive life saving treatments. I received mod approval to post a GoFundMe I set up in order to pay just for December healthcare bills. I will either lose treatment or lose my home, and I was recently homeless over a year a few years ago and would not like to repeat the experience. My wife is permanently disabled after her battle with Ovarian Cancer (and needs another $800 down payment foe a surgery but that’s ANOTHER can of worms). Basically, without goon help, I am fucked. I have zero plans for Christmas or any holidays this season because I’m too busy fighting to keep my home and my health. My GFM is nearly halfway funded as it is, and on the off chance that it gets overfunded the excess will go towards my wife’s surgery. Both my GFM page and my PMF thread show I am very transparent with where the money goes and what it’s spent on, so no worries there. You can find my GoFundMe here! I intent to post an update to it this evening to keep everyone up to date with health stuff. If you would rather donate something other than money, which I totally get, I have an Amazon wishlist here which is mostly household things we need and food for the cats. I will happily post pictures of them in the thread. They are very sweet baby who cry if a stranger comes to the apartment and doesn’t pick them up. I’ll try to stay on top of removing items from the wishlist as they get bought. I’m not very good with signing off posts, but if anyone has any questions about Lymphona or chemo or the american healthcare system (or just want to see cat photos!) please feel free to ask and I’ll answer as best I can! Thank you in advance for your generosity and kindness. Bless. Edit 12/10: It was suggested that I throw my Venmo in the OP for those who would rather donate that way! Venmo: @moringottos Paypal (please ignore my deadname it’s a nightmare to change): paypal.me/necromancermoons
This is their update today, May 25 2022:
The minimum payments for my medical bills in arrears (mostly chemo) comes out of my bank account automatically to prevent them from suing me over it. I’ve already used my one (1) free grace period of “please give me a few more days before you take my money” according to the lady on the phone, so I’m left with $0.11 in my bank account with several bills, including rent, looming on the horizon. The electric company has already made it very clear they will not hesitate to cut off my power if I even act like I’m going to be late. What do you even do when faced with this level of “fuck you entirely”? I keep telling myself that people are inherently good, but between this and the news and the man at the insurance company writing me a polite email that says “if you have another cancer, try dying this time”, I’m starting to have a hard time with it.
May 18, 2022 7:32 PM
Due to some concerning test results my oncologist is now pushing for testing for multiple myeloma. MM killed my birth dad. I think I may have sorta blacked out during half of what she said. I asked her if it was usual to have this sort of insane cancerous comorbidity, she said it’s not impossible. The imagining center got back to me FINALLY. They said even though my insurance is up in the air and they usually require payment at time of service, my doctors have been hounding them enough that they will let me have a payment plan for x-rays and scans costs. I’ve had enough biopsies that the MM tests don’t scare me like they would have two years ago. Immediately after my lung biopsy I threw up a ton of blackish blood so I feel inoculated to the trauma. Anyways at this point it feels silly, like my body is throwing this massive temper tantrum that it doesn’t want to be here anymore and it’s like “understandable, but consider: we can’t let capitalism win”. Also god won’t let me die because then I’ll be his problem.
the threads: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3987338&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=1 I believe this one isn’t paywalled
https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3916924 but this one might be, this is their diary of day to days of discovering the cancer (they went to the hospital for covid originally). warning: this thread might be very upsetting and hard to read if you have hospital or cancer trauma. or even without

Fracture
Theo Hotchner breaks his arm.
A mini-fic set post ITSWM. (I know I haven’t finished posting that yet but I wrote some fluff for this universe because I needed the serotonin, and thought you might too.)
Rating: General
Words: 2.5k
It happens in slow motion. Aaron watches as Theo falls from the jungle gym, landing awkwardly on his arm as he hits the ground. There’s a beat of silence, a moment where Aaron thinks everything might be ok when runs over, and then his son starts crying hysterically as he sits up.
When he sees Theo’s arm, bent at an unnatural angle, his first thought is that Emily was going to kill him.
____________
Emily feels her phone ring in her pocket for the second time in as many minutes and the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. She knows it’s Aaron without looking, having rejected his initial call only a minute before with the intention of calling him back the minute she was free. He never calls her at work, knowing the pressure of her job since he had once done it himself.
He usually texts her, sends her a photo of the kids as they do something adorable or slightly mischievous. Photos of Amelia smiling widely at the camera, or Theo and Jack playing Mario Kart together, matching looks of concentration on their faces. They helped, reminding her of what was waiting for her when she got home from horrific case after horrific case, that despite everything she still had her family.
She’d never tell Aaron that they also hurt at times. Tiny reminders of what she missed out on when she was away.
The fact he was calling her twice in such quick succession could only mean something was wrong.
Emily looks at the team as they deliver the profile to the local detectives. Dave catches her eye and gives her a quick nod as she lifts her phone and tilts her head down a hallway.
She answers the phone just as it’s about to ring out. “Aaron, is everything ok?”
Aaron sighs over the phone. “It’s Theo, he’s okay I promise, but he’s broken his arm.”
For a moment she swears her heart stops in her chest, panic seeping through her body at the thought of her precious little boy being hurt. “He’s not okay if he’s got a broken bone, Aaron.”
“Sweetheart.” He says firmly, preventing her from spiralling any further. “He’s in a bit of pain but he’s ok. He’s just convinced me this means we get to have ice cream for dinner.”
She barks out a laugh that catches in her throat. “That boy will do anything for ice cream.” She pauses to take a breath, her emotions still overwhelming despite Aaron’s attempts to distract her. “What happened?”
“He fell off the jungle gym.”
She frowns at this, indignation running through her veins. “Aaron, I-”
“Yes, I know you told me he has almost fallen off of it before. I can’t exactly tell him he can’t go on it though sweetheart.”
She sighs, and feels the anger leave her just as quickly as it came. She looks over her shoulder when she hears the room full of local officers and detectives start to disperse.
“Do you want to talk to him?” Aaron asks gently.
“Yes please.” She breathes out, and waits a second as she hears Aaron talking to Theo in the background, the sound of the emergency room they were in almost drowning out their conversation.
“Hi, Mommy.” He sniffs, sounding incredibly sorry for himself. Her chest feels tight at the sound of it, at the use of the name ‘mommy’ when her 8 year old had mostly been calling her ‘mom’ lately.
“Hi, sweetie. How are you feeling?”
“My arm hurts.” He grumbles. “The doctor said I could get a cast in any colour.”
“Really?” She asks, voice full of fake enthusiasm. “What colour are you going for?”
“Green.” He sniffs again, a sign that he had been crying that broke her heart. “Are you coming home?”
Emily closes her eyes, and she blows out a breath. “I can’t, sweetie. I’m working, remember? I’m in Texas.”
“Okay.” The disappointment in his voice is palpable, and it takes everything in her to not start crying there and then. Thoughts of how she could leave in the middle of the case, assign someone else as agent in charge and just go home and hug her son.
And maybe smack her husband for letting Theo go on the jungle gym in the first place.
“Emily.” Dave’s voice interrupts her and she turns to look at him, holding up a finger to show she just needed another minute.
“Theo, honey, I’ve got to go okay. I love you so much. I’ll call later.”
“Love you too.”
She smiles at that, as she has done every single time since he first said it. “Can you pass me back to Dad?”
There's another shuffle on the other end of the phone, a quick curse from her husband as one of them nearly drops the phone. “Sweetheart?”
“I’ve really got to go, I’m sorry.”
“Baby, we get it.” He reassures, clearly able to hear how sad she is, how torn she is over what to do. “Theo gets it too usually, you know you’re the first thing any of us wants when we’re sick or hurt.”
Emily nods despite the fact she knows he can’t see her, and she hastily wipes away the tear the movement drops onto her cheek. “I know, you Hotchner’s really can’t cope without me.” She jokes.
“We can get by until you wrap up the case.” He replies, and she can just imagine the grin on his face, the way it would bring out his dimples. “I’ll text when we’re home okay?”
“Yeah, thank you. Love you.”
“Love you too, sweetheart.”
She hangs up the phone and turns back to Dave, who is standing behind her still, with concern all over his face. “Is everything okay at home?”
Emily sighs as she puts her phone back in her pocket and starts to walk back to the conference room, Dave keeping pace at her side. “Theo’s broken his arm, so Aaron took him to hospital.”
Despite how neutrally she tries to say it she clearly fails, Dave coming to a stop and putting a hand on her arm. “The poor kid. We can always manage here if you need to head back.”
She frowns at him. “I can still do my job, Dave.”
He holds his hands up in surrender. “I never said you couldn’t, Bella. I just know that you aren’t going to believe he’s fine until you see him for yourself.”
“I appreciate your concern, but I am fine.” She practically growls at him before walking past into the conference room.
“Yeah.” Dave says to himself. “That was definitely said in a way a person who was fine would say it.”
____________
Emily was aware that she was in a foul mood, snapping at the team as they asked questions or every time they came up against a dead end. The need to get home as quickly as possible clawing at her throat. Photos that Aaron had sent her the night before of Theo with his bright green arm cast, and a bowl of ice cream in front of him only further deepening that need.
It culminates in her shouting at Derek like she never had before, something that made him say the ‘Hotch attitude’ was finally rubbing off on her. She threatened him with victimology for the rest of his career and then stormed out, ignoring the way the locals looked at her as she did.
She finds solace in the women’s bathroom, or at least she did right up until Dave followed her in.
“You shouldn’t be here, Dave.” She says as she briefly turns to look at him, before going back to looking at her weary face in the mirror. Sleep had not come easy for her the night before, George Foyet always making his way back into her subconscious every time someone in her family was hurt.
“Neither should you, Emily.” He clears his throat, clearly ready for an argument. “Which is why I’ve booked you a flight home.”
Emily turns quickly at that, stares him down. “You did what?”
“I booked you a flight, it leaves in two hours. I’ll drive you to the airport.”
She takes a step towards him and crosses her arms across her chest. “I can’t just leave in the middle of a case. I am the Unit Chief.”
“And you’re a damn good one, but you’re also an excellent mother. And I know that you need to see your little boy more than he needs to see you.”
Emily stares at him before nodding, relenting to doing exactly what she had been wanting to do in the 30 hours it had been since Aaron had called her. “You’re right. I’ll go. But I expect updates about what's going on here.”
“As you wish.” He stands out of her way so she can get past him and leave the bathroom. “The ticket is first class by the way, so drink some free champagne and do everyone a favour and chill out.”
Emily grimaces as they walk back towards the conference room. “Have I really been that bad?”
“You owe everyone at least one drink. I think you owe Derek a month off of paperwork.”
“He wishes.” Emily scoffs.
____________
Aaron watches in amusement as Amelia climbs onto the couch next to Theo and starts to, not very gently, stroke his hair. It’s what Emily did for all of them, Aaron included, when they were sick or hurt and Theo lets his sister do it, despite it clearly being the last thing he wanted. Watching his two year old daughter mirror her mother made his heart constrict, and he wished more than ever that his wife was here.
His phone rings and he grabs it, smiling as he sees Emily’s name and picture on the screen. “Hey, how are things?”
“I’m on a plane.” She replies, a small laugh in her voice. “Dave bought me a ticket and drove me to the airport. Took me as far as security would let him to make sure I got onboard.”
Aaron couldn’t pretend he was anything other than relieved. He’d noticed the tension in his wife during the brief phone calls and text exchanges about their son’s injury. Not to mention Theo was miserable, barely putting up with his little sister's antics anymore, and getting crankier by the second.
“What time do you get in?”
“Too late for you to even think about picking me up, I’ll get a cab home.”
He wants to argue, to go get her and tell her everything is fine, but he knows that's not what she needs him to do. She would want him here, in their home, with their kids. “Okay, just text me when you land.”
“I will. Love you.”
“You too.” He says as he hangs up.
“Everything okay, Dad?” Jack’s voice comes from behind him.
Aaron turns to look at his 17 year old son. “Yeah, Emily is on her way.”
Jack smiles at him, the same smile he inherited from Haley. “Uncle Dave sent her home?” Jack laughs at Aaron’s nod. “That’s a whole day sooner than you said it would happen.”
Aaron laughs. “She must have been in a really bad mood.”
____________
When Emily gets home it’s already well past Theo’s bedtime. As soon as she is in the house she sneaks into his bedroom and her chest tightens at the sight of his bright green cast laid on a pillow next to him. Archie held tightly under Theo’s good arm. She walks over to his bed and presses a kiss to his forehead, whispering apologies for not being home earlier into his hairline.
Amelia is also asleep. Emily sits down on the edge of her bed and tucks her in a little bit tighter and runs her fingers through her daughter's increasingly unruly hair.
Jack was still up, playing video games online with his friends. She pops her head in his room and quietly says hi, aware she had accidentally embarrassed him in the past. He throws her a grateful smile and a wave and she closes the door behind her.
When she gets to her own room Aaron is sitting on the edge of the bed waiting for her, and immediately stands as she closes the door behind her. She’s in his arms before she can really register it, and the lump that had sat in her throat since Aaron called her about Theo dissipates almost immediately.
Emily wraps her arms tightly around him, and presses her face into his soft t-shirt. “Hey.”
Aaron presses a kiss to the top of her head and rubs a hand up and down her back. “Hey sweetheart.”
He encourages her to get ready for bed, and joins her. Their nighttime routines are easily done around each other, years of practise behind them. Once they settle into bed he immediately pulls her into his arms and rests her on his chest.
“You ok?” He asks gently, fingers running up and down her arm.
“Yes.” She swallows against the word, and it tasted like a lie. “No. I just feel like a bad mom.” She admits into his chest, the fear that had been circling around in her head for longer than the last couple of days bursting out of her. “I know I’m not.” She says as she feels him take in a breath to admonish her, and she rubs the tension from his chest with the palm of her hand. “Being their mom is my favourite thing, but when I can’t be here when my son hurts himself...it really sucks.”
Aaron hears the way her voice cracks, and the way her body shudders when she tries to hold back the tears he had no doubt she had been putting off since he called her to tell her about Theo’s accident.
“You’re okay, Em. And so is he.” Aaron kisses the top of her head. “He’ll be so happy when he wakes up to see you tomorrow, and I’ll go back to being second favourite even though I gave him ice-cream two days in a row.”
She pushes herself up by the hand on his chest, her tearstained face coming into view. “Two days in a row?”
____________
Theo is delighted to see her the next morning, all but forgetting about his broken arm as he launches himself at her. He begs her to sign his cast, to draw a picture on it for him, and she smiles when she sees the scribbles on it clearly left by Aaron helping Amelia hold the pen.
When her daughter realises she is home she squeals and demands to be held by her mother for hours.
They watch a movie together, all of them piling into the living room. Theo chooses the movie, Monsters Inc, and Aaron levels a glare at Jack when he opens his mouth to complain.
“Breaking your arm is fun.” Theo exclaims as he sits in between his parents, ready to watch his favourite movie.
Aaron and Emily exchange a look over the top of their son’s head and they both suppress a laugh.
They were all going to be fine.

The positive test result is confirmed and you and Calum feel like you’re floating. The first week of knowing that your family is growing comes with bliss. You can’t help but smile every time you see each other, Calum can’t keep his hands from settling around your waist or delicately resting on your stomach. Duke develops a newfound interest and need to be with you; his senses turning his protectiveness into overdrive. The first week blows by, little red slashes on the calendar keeping count of all the days it will take to greet the newest member of the family.
“I can’t wait to meet her,” Calum says, standing in the kitchen where he cooks up dinner. You haven’t quite developed any crazy cravings yet but it doesn’t stop him from making anything you desire.
“Her?” You ask with an arched eyebrow and smirk.
“Just a guess,” he says with a shrug and smile then adds on, “the right one.”
“I don’t know, love, I think my money’s on a boy,” you reply and let your hand settle on your stomach. As much as Calum’s made it a habit you’ve done so tenfold. You’re not showing yet but the habit comes from comfort.
“You wanna make a bet?” Calum asks, stalling his cooking to eye you. You shift in the stool you’re sat on and question him with a look. “A girl and I win. A boy and you win.”
“What do you propose we win?” you question.
Calum lets out a breath, turns off the stove and moves the pan from the hot burner before rounding the counter to be by your side. He slides his hands around you, holds you, kisses your forehead and smiles. “Bragging rights. And first choice at names,” he proposes and piques your interest. He knows you have a list of names that have swirled through your mind since you got serious together. You have a feeling even if he wins he’ll still consider what you want and you know you’d do the same for him. It’s all in good fun.
“Alright, deal, but we won’t know for a while,” you remind him and seal the deal with a kiss.
More days pass and the complications of pregnancy start to kick in. Cravings and sickness, fatigue and changes plague you. Calum is there for you through it all. He offers comfort and support, takes as much time as he can to be with you, cater to your every whim and need. Though there are challenges both of you stay optimistic and anxious, nearly unable to wait for the day you get to hold the product of love in your arms. You often find yourself speaking of it all, making plans. You’ve yet to tell anyone but Calum’s parents and sister about the pregnancy, opting to keep it to yourselves until enough time has passed that risk margins slim and complications start to fade.
“We should probably tell the guys, at least,” Calum mumbles one night. You lay on your side and gaze at him under thin streams of moonlight coming in through the slats of the blinds.
“Yeah,” you agree, knowing they’re family and should know soon.
“I can tell them at the studio tomorrow,” Calum offers and you watch his eyes shoot up to the ceiling. “Unless you want to be there when they find out.”
You nod. “Oh I think I have to be. Luke did walk me down the aisle,” you remind with a slight giggle and light up when Calum laughs too.
“Stop by for lunch and we’ll tell them together?” Calum offers and you nod, making the plan and looking forward to the reactions to come.
The next day you show up to the studio where Calum greets you with lunch, a smile and a kiss to the cheek. He holds your hand up to where the rest of the band convenes with a shroud of take out boxes around them. You go in without a game plan in place to break the news but feel that might be best, you want telling them to come naturally. You’ve started to show just a touch but it’s easy enough to o disguise with Calum’s hoodie. None of the boys are the wiser or suspect anything when you walk in with Calum.
You get halfway through your meal, making small talk and trading banter, filling the guys in on marital life and the happiness you share when Ashton eyes your odd combo of food and makes a quip.
“I’d say it’s the pregnancy cravings but I’ve always liked this, actually,” you reply without thought and only realize what you’ve said when Ashton laughs but Michael and Calum stay silent and then Ashton falls into the quiet as well.
“Wait, what?” Ashton asks and stands as if the news is so striking he’s not sure what to do with himself. Neither you or Calum respond, the lack of game plan not readying you for the varying responses of shock. “Shut up, are you really pregnant or just trying to give me chest pain?”
Calum laughs and you blush around a giggle. Michael and Luke lean forward, rapt with interest at what answer might come from you two. You start by nodding but it’s not enough for Ashton to believe you and sit back down. He waits for words, waits for Calum to also confirm and when the chorus of confirmation and explanation falls from the two of you he breaks into a grin and finally joins Luke and Michael back on the sofa.
“I really didn’t think Calum would be the first,” Michael muses, hands folded together under his chin, you can see the happiness in his eyes and the unrelenting tilt of his lips.
“The first to have a kid?” Calum asks and throws his arm around your shoulder to pull you closer.
“The first to find love, get married, have a kid, all of it,” Michael clarifies with fondness in his tone. “I’m happy for you,” he adds on and flickers his eyes from Calum to you, making it known he means both of you.
Luke joins in on the sentiment and congratulations, pulls you into a hug and promises he’ll be there whenever you need him, also mentions that he’s already vying for the position of favorite uncle.
“Does anyone else know?” Luke asks after.
“Just my parents and Mali,” Calum answers. “We want to keep it as private as possible for as long as possible.”
You and Calum are no strangers to privacy in your relationship. You’d kept your entire relationship a secret from the public for over a year before an accidental slip of paparazzi outed you, hate swirled and Calum took a stand to tell the world he loves you. Since then you’ve gone back under the radar, preferring to keep to yourselves. Keeping your pregnancy quiet feels only natural. You know there will come a time when it can’t be hidden, but in the meantime you’re going to enjoy every last minute of privacy and solace that you can.
You slowly break the news to other close friends as the weeks go on. It’s over dinner that Calum broaches the subject of making a public announcement. You know it’s time, you’re showing and the probability of being spotted and found out increases day by day. You nod in agreement at his words, how carefully he’s thought it through and what steps he wants to take to do it. A simple instagram post, a simple caption and the comments turned off. You agree and watch over Calum’s shoulder while he scrolls through near endless photos of you, you and him, all of the baby items you’ve obtained over the five months of the pregnancy. He finally decides on a simple photo of his hands on your bump and captions it with your due date and a heart. He posts it so the world knows but you keep your world inside the walls of your home and the love between the two of you.
You spend the next couple of months in an excited bliss. All of your appointments and classes go well. You both decide to be surprised by the gender, still waiting on your bet, still biding time on choosing a name. Calum always says you’ll know when you finally meet her—sticking to his guns about your baby being a daughter. You’ve bought almost everything for the nursery but have yet to get them all put together. The boxes leave a reminder of excitement and fondness in you every time you pass by the door. Habits begin to form as you get ready for the baby to come. Calum sings to your bump, talks to you and the baby, cradles you and speaks of the future so often and vividly you can nearly see it. Everything builds hope in your heart.
***
Calum’s at the studio late one night, texting you, promising you he’s trying to get home as soon as he can when the first sign occurs. Immediately and instinctively you know. You fumble with your phone and dial Calum’s number. It rings only once before he answers and you cut off his greeting.
“It’s happening,” you breathe out.
“Sweetheart, you’re barely seven months, are you sure it’s not Braxton-Hicks?” Calum asks, automatically knowing what you mean, concern is in his tone but the drone of background noise over the phone cuts through.
You nod, tears in your eyes, knowing he can’t see you and then manage to get out a cracked ‘yes’. It suddenly feels like the world you’ve been living in is moving too fast. It’s happening too soon and instead of an anticipated and joyous occasion you’re bombarded by a time unexpected and only worries following. You know complications exist with premature birth and they rattle through your brain and instill fear into you when all you want to be feeling is happiness.
Calum doesn’t hesitate when he knows you’re certain. “Mali’s closer, she’ll bring you to the hospital and I’ll meet you, okay? Ash will call her, just breathe, it’s gonna be okay.”
You want to believe him, have always been able to put your faith into his words. But this is out of his control.
“I’m scared,” you confide, voice small and shaking with the two words.
“Stay on the phone with me. I’m right here,” he soothes. “It’s gonna be okay,” he repeats and now you wonder if it’s for you or to convince himself, knowing that realizations of the situation have caught up with him. Noting the tiniest hint of fear in his voice.
You hold onto his words, the sentiment, the sound of his voice as he tries calming you. He stays on the phone with you as Mali shows up, through the car rides that separate you and only hangs up when he sees you being wheeled into the check in desk. He strides for you, takes your hand in his and repeats words that have become a mantra.
“It’s gonna be okay.”
You try to believe him as your world spins on and you’re powerless to the future. You don’t let go of his hand or his hope.

1) You Control Me (Even If Its Just Tonight) | Explicit | 1591 words
Louis rides Harry and thinks he's in control.
2) Save a Horse | Explicit | 2400 words
Louis goes to a rodeo with Liam, and gets a lot more than he bargained for. Featuring bull rider Harry, obnoxious t-shirts, and one hell of a night.
3) El Comienzo De Una Vida | Teen & Up | 2779 words
Note: There is no smut in this fic, but it contains omega Louis, so we’ve included it in this monthly roundup. This fic is the second part of a series.
After being bartered to Harry to save his kingdom, Louis is on his way to the Alpha's homeland and he would very much like him to stop being so cautious and just kiss him, god damn it!
4) A Treat For You And A Treat For Me | Explicit | 3416 words
Louis blushed at Harry’s flirty tone. “You’re just saying that to get in my pants.” He giggled, half joking. “But thank you. I’m glad you like it.”
“Not just to get in your pants, baby. I’m being honest. You’re always cute. Are you wearing mascara?” He asked, licking over his lips. Louis in makeup always did something to Harry. He loved it.
Louis nodded, leaning forward. “I am. Do you like it? I’m also wearing some cute Halloween panties under my costume.. if you wanna see them later?” He murmured, letting his lips touch Harry’s lightly before pulling away, a tiny smile on his lips.
Harry’s mouth opened a bit, but no words came out. Instead Louis was lifted up and carried in Harry’s arms, up the stairs. “Later? I wanna see them now.” He whispered into Louis’ ear, hot breath sending shivers down Louis’ body. “Missed you so much since last time.”
5) A Kiss For Then, A Kiss For Now (And A Million More) | Mature | 6073 words
Note: There is no smut in this fic, but it contains omega Louis, so we’ve included it in this monthly roundup. This is the sequel to this fic.
A collection of moments from Petal's life with her mummy, the stinky alpha and their new baby boy.
6) Terror At Our Door | Explicit | 6201 words
A hurt man comes to Harry's home on Halloween, bringing in a world of mystery that Styles didn't want at all.
What a shame that feelings are involved too.
7) Fight Me Breathless | Mature | 7596 words
Louis Tomlinson has no idea why he’s in a London hospital for asthma, but enter Harry Styles, his doctor, who he definitely doesn’t think is hot, and he’s left wondering if asthma is why he can’t seem to breathe properly with his doctor around.
8) This Ain't Red Wine | Explicit | 9054 words
It’s not until he gets a whiff of the contents of his glass that Louis realizes his grave mistake.
That’s not red wine.
It’s blood.
It’s probably not the most rational, but his first thought is what people are going to think when they discover his body. On the list of stupidest ways for a human to die, accidentally turning up to a Vampire party has to be pretty high up there.
9) Colder Weather | Explicit | 15132 words
Note: Please remember to check tags for any trigger warnings.
Louis doesn’t know what comes over him. “Please H-Harry, take me,” Louis looks back at the farmhouse, swallowing once as his skittish eyes fall onto the master bedroom window, “Take me with you, please.”
Harry’s scent flares, the tinged anger so noticeable that Louis draws back out of the alpha’s space.
“Is he hittin’ on you?”
Louis’ right hand rests briefly against the bruise forming rapidly over the right side of his rib cage, the darkness of the night hiding the movement. “No.”
10) Those Who From The Pit Of Hell, Roam To Seek Their Prey On Earth | Explicit | 17636 words
1889. Louis Tomlinson is a student at the prestigious Harrow School for Boys, nurturing his passion for forensic medicine under the care of a particularly mysterious and dark teacher, Harry Styles, who has set his main focus on a series of gruesome murders, all of them reflecting the year 1888, when Jack the Ripper went rampant in the poor streets of Whitechapel.
11) The Shining Distraction That Makes Me Fly Home | General Audiances | 19397 words
Note: There is no smut in this fic, but it contains omega Louis, so we’ve included it in this monthly roundup.
An omega Louis and an alpha Harry find themselves in a forced marriage that gives Louis the freedom he desires in exchange for Harry being chained up a bit more.
12) Welcome to The Rivalry | Mature | 19671 words
“Welcome home!” Niall yelled, clapping his hands in excitement. “Isn’t it great?”
Louis looked between Niall and the house, unsure how to respond.
“I don’t understand,” Louis finally managed to say. “Aren’t we a little old to be living so close to campus?”
Niall scoffed. “You’re only twenty-four for fuck’s sake. There is still plenty of partying left for us to do. What better place than one street over from where a car was set on fire after the Michigan game last year?”
“Is there proof of that? Did the car have Michigan plates or something? Is there a photo I can send in a DM to Wolfie?”
As if on cue, a Twitter notification popped up on Louis’ Apple watch. He had tweeted again.

Louis wants to crawl across the dirt on his knees and just take what Harry gives him.

15) Terror Of Surrender | Explicit | 31566 words
Harry instructs them to step into Crescent Lunge, stopping when he gets to Louis to adjust his hips. “I think you can bend a little more.” He helps Louis deepen the stretch, his hands tight on his hips. “Good boy.”

Harry Styles is his case partner. High and mighty, annoyingly smug Harry Styles who’s known him for years and has fucking seen him naked for fuck’s sake.
He glances at Venus who’s blinking up at him with curious eyes, no doubt sensing the agitation sparking in his magic.
“This is not happening,” Louis says loudly. “This is not fucking happening. I am going to kill Liam, oh my god.” He doesn’t even know if Liam is responsible for this but it feels like something he’d do to drive Louis absolutely insane - exes don’t just show up to your assigned haunted house out of nowhere. “Fucking fuck!”

Louis exhales, resisting the urge to scream.

Poppy Fanfic: “Ask Her”
For context: This is a fanfic I wrote in order to join the Poppy Milk dev team and show off my writing skills. Since the callout at the time said we’d need to write a lot of sidequests, I wanted to ask the question of what a Poppy-centered side-quest would be like. I got the idea that it would be from an Asker’s perspective, and everything sort of came naturally after that. Even though I’m on the dev team right now, it’s not canon to Omega Timeline: Poppy’s Story and even has some inaccuracies that contradict canon. With that said, please feel free to read the story below the cut.
---
You noticed something very different inside your room when you woke up. The lights were off and the sun hadn’t yet risen, but there was a certain… aura, coming from your door. You were filled with a certain trepidation, but… you approached it. It was hard to see in the light, but it looked… grey.
Swallowing the lump in your throat, you stepped through...
...and found about the last person you would’ve expected. The spitting image of Frisk - CORE!Frisk, that was, looking up at you, in the middle of a white void.
“Wh- You’re real?!” you asked, dumbfounded.
“Of course I’m real. Have you been taking all this multiverse stuff for granted? Everything is real somewhere,” Core answered, simply.
“I… I don’t… and you, me…” you panted, starting to feel a small panic attack coming on.
“Focus,” Core snapped their fingers, grounding you back in reality. Okay, this was happening now.
“Let’s get down to business. Simply: you don’t like me. And I don’t like you. But we BOTH like Poppy. Poppy, my dear, sweet angel… has unfortunately recently come to the realization that Askers ALSO exist in the multiverse. And now she wants to do a ‘meet n’ greet’ with one of her fans. Trust me, I TRIED to talk her out of it, but she can be darn persuasive when she wants to be. And as you’re now realizing, that’s where you come in.
“I wanna make you a deal. You play along with whatever Poppy wants until she gets bored of this. If you’re on your best behavior - and that means, don’t give her anything bad, don’t tell her anything you KNOW she shouldn’t know, don’t use any magic, and be a general good influence - if you play nice, in exchange, I will allow you to hang out with ANY resident of the Omega Timeline.
“Want to spend a day full of wacky hijinks with a Papyrus, or even an Underswap Sans? Consider it done. Want to know how Deltarune Chapter 2 plays out ahead of time? I know a Susie with your name on it. Whatever you want, so long as you play by the rules, and don’t ask for anyone obviously ridiculous. So… do we have ourselves a deal?”
You contemplated that offer, and everything that was happening, trying to suppress your inner urge to geek out for just a few moments. The Omega Timeline, Poppy, and all the AU’s you could think of and more were real. And you just got an invitation to visit them.
“Yeah, of course!” you nodded excitedly, though your enthusiasm only seemed to make Core more anxious.
“Don’t make me regret this…” Core sighed, as the whiteness seemed to melt away into a cozy-looking house with wooden floors and lime walls, where you were standing directly outside of a white door. Core seemed to have disappeared.
Technically, there was nothing stopping you from exploring. So you did just that. You walked up to a shelf with some family photos. One was a photo of Poppy, Core, Dusted and Rust all together, in some meadow, looking happy. At least, you assumed Dusted and Rust were happy, they didn’t show up well on camera. There was another photo of Poppy alone, looking somewhat younger than she did on the blog, seated on a chair in a photo that looked far more staged. She held an actual poppy flower in her hand and smiled brightly.
You opened the cabinet doors, curious of what knick-knacks you might find in there. Some crayons, a few random glass cups, some art by 3-year-old Poppy that was so poorly done its meaning was hard to decipher, and a locked box. You reached for the box--
“Getting a bit sidetracked, aren’t we?”
You jolted up, and faced Core behind you. Even though they were child-sized, they crossed their arms with the poise and authority of a stern parent. You laughed anxiously. “Ahahaha… ahaha… ha……..”
“...Strike one.” Core said, and vanished. The meaning of that was all-too clear. Deciding not to dilly dally any longer, you went to the room you suspected to be Poppy’s, and knocked.
“Just a sec!” Poppy said, and opened the door. She looked up at you, and gasped. “Wow, Granpa really did come through…!” She twirled excitedly. “You must be my adoring fan, aren’t you?” she asked.
You stared down at the girl in stunned silence.
“To be honest, I kinda figured you’d be some gray guy with sunglasses, but that’s kinda silly in hindsight. How you doin’?” She asked that last line in a mock accent as you continued to stare.
“Baby,” you said.
“What?”
“Nothing,” you quickly tried to change the subject. “Yeah, it’s… y’know, it’s great to be here…” You clasped your hands together, biting your lip. You were in an Undertale AU, faced with the AU granddaughter of another AU character. You still weren’t entirely over that. Was this fever dream? Fandom heaven, or fandom hell?
“I know! Once I heard you guys weren’t from the Omega Timeline, I realized I hadn’t met even ONE of my fans… even if you guys are super annoying some of the time.”
“Uhhh, yeah…” you wondered if you should apologize on behalf of the askers who put Poppy in the hospital that one time. Then again, it seemed kind of awkward, and it might have been best not to bring that up while Core was watching, which was always. Looking down at the cutesy girl, it was almost tempting to pull her into a hug, but you managed to keep your composure.
“I wanted to do something a little more special than just some sorta interview, though, because you ask me questions all the time anyways,” Poppy said. “Granpa said you’ve never been to the Omega Timeline before, so I wanna give you the big tour!” Poppy went to the door. “I’m gonna be outside when you’re ready!” She left the room.
Seeing the empty room in front of you, you were tempted to snoop again, but you’d learned your lesson after last time. You headed straight out after Poppy.
You couldn’t help but gasp in awe of the serenity of the great outdoors as you were beckoned to it. You’d been outside before, obviously, but everything just looked so… nice. The blue sky, the grassy grounds, the ornate buildings… you’ve seen this place in pixel art and a couple drawings before, but seeing it with your own eyes was another story. And the next thing for you to nearly faint at was seeing the Undertale characters running around, Sanses, Undynes, Frisks, even goat moms.
Poppy smiled. “...It’s nice, isn’t it? I KNEW taking you on a tour was a good idea.” She smirked. “Now remember, just because this is a meet-up doesn’t mean it’s free, and there WILL be a fee at the end of our ride.”
“...Uh… I left my wallet at home,” you said, patting your pockets, “And I don’t have any, uh... ‘G,’ I think. Unless the G stands for ‘Gratitude,’ amiright?” you did finger guns.
“G stands for Gold,” Poppy corrected you bluntly, unamused. She returned to her chipper attitude just as quickly, though. “Now, let me show you around!” She led you down the street.
Walking with her, seeing so many versions of your favorite characters in the flesh, walking around… well, the temptation to talk to SOME of them was irresistible, Core be damned. You did resolve not to go too far off-track, but you shared some words with the folks you passed by, Poppy thankfully stopping each time you did. You met two Frisks - one boy, one ambiguous - an Underswap Undyne, a human version of Toriel, and surprisingly, a version of Princess Peach.
You and Poppy approached an elegant fountain, stood upon proudly by a statue of a mustachio’d CORE!Frisk. “This is the Timeline Plaza! It’s sort of the local park, where people meet up to do... stuff. Just hang out. Make a picnic. Play ball. All that good park-y stuff, y’know? And there’s stores in all directions, so it’s pretty good.” She proudly showed off her home to you, with a smile.
You talked to more on the way to the next place. An Inverted Fate Papyrus. A weird Ralsei who said his name was “Noyno.” An Asgore wearing a hoodie, who you assumed was swapped with Sans. (Poppy did scold you a little bit for this, telling you that just because someone has a hoodie you shouldn’t assume they’re swapped. You apologized.)
“This is Grillby’s! One of them, anyways. The nearest one to my house. It’s pretty good if you want an OK burger. Sanses love the place, though. It’s… kind of unhealthy. And a little gross.” Poppy said. “Especially when they just drink… raw… ketchup.”
“Can’t handle a little ketchup?” you smiled mischievously. “We drink it by the gallon back in my universe,” you lied.
“...I really hope you’re joking,” Poppy said, alarmed.
“Am I?” you smiled brighter.
“...W-well, we’re not going in there, so you can FORGET about drinking that much ketchup!” Poppy said, afraid of the sheer power of your ketchup-drinking.
You and Poppy moved onto the next spot. You met an Underswap Alphys who seemed to be trapped in a red-and-gold palette. You met a robot dressed as a circus ringmaster, who claimed to be a Chara. You met a Dummy dressed in a Frisk shirt. (You didn’t assume it was swapped with Frisk this time, which turned out to be a mistake, because it was.) Poppy stared at you awkwardly now, wondering why you were talking to all these random strangers. Finally, you and Poppy reached your next destination.
“The theater! Where we show off all the greatest hits! Including MY movie, which, not to brag, but it’s--”
Except, you’d been distracted by a hyperdeath Asriel, and were ignoring Poppy for the moment.
“...” Poppy spoke up. “That’s what I don’t get about you.”
“Huh?” that seemed to wake you up, and you looked at her.
“Everytime it’s always, ‘have you met Underswap Sans,’ or ‘have you met JangoTale Frisk,’ or some other weird thing. You always ask that. But… they’re just people. Why do you always assume I know some random Sans or Frisk or someone?”
“I…” you were a bit taken aback. “...I don’t… we don’t assume you know them, they’re just… they’re just important.”
“Important?” She asked. “...I-I mean, yeah, EVERYONE’s important, but, I don’t really get what you mean…”
“They’re all--” You paused, trying to collect your thoughts, think of everything you knew from the blog, and tried to actually talk to her. “...They’re like friends to me. Kinda.”
“...You guys are friends with them? I thought you were stuck in your world…” she frowned.
“No, it’s like-- I’m not ‘friends’ with Underswap Frisk, or-- or Storyshift Frisk, or Shifty or whatever, I’m just friends with… Frisk.”
...Poppy stared at you like you just said the ground was turning to jelly, or something equally bafflingly inane. “...I… think you’re confused. Look, sometimes newcomers struggle with this. Your Frisk isn’t the only Frisk--”
“I know! It’s… You don’t get it. This world, these worlds are so special and creative, and they mean a lot to me. I know we can be really edgy, and I know we ask weird questions about Dusted and Rust, but that’s all because… because...” you paused.
Poppy looked, seeming upset about hearing her siblings mentioned in the context of ‘edgy’ questions, not seeing what you were seeing. Core, standing behind her, holding up a hand signal.
The number two.
You were getting carried away. You overstepped.
“...Um… I’m sorry.” You pulled her into a hug as Core vanished. “There’s really no reason for us to ask those questions. We can just be dumb sometimes.”
“...” She hugged back. “Yeah, it’s okay. I knew you guys were super weird and dumb before I convinced Granpa to let you in here, so I guess I should’ve seen this coming,” Poppy smiled, regaining her confidence as you did your best to not be offended at being called weird and dumb.
“Okay! I think I have just one last stop in mind to cap this tour off on a high note! Literally, hehehe…” She giggled mischievously. This time, you didn’t stop to talk to others, following her directly as you approached a peak overlooking the town. For yet another time, and probably the last, you couldn’t help but ogle at the town’s beauty. “Pretty good, right?” She sat down.
“Ha… with all the climbing, I was worried we’d fall down a mountain,” you joked. Poppy seemed to roll her eyes, as you sat beside her. “...I guess I get how you can call this place home. I mean, once I stop nerding out, anyways. You don’t see stuff like this in my… reality.”
“Just gallons and gallons of ketchup, huh?” she commented. You couldn’t help but laugh.
“Yeah.”
And you two just stared into the distance for a while. ...She wasn’t just a character. She was a human being.
...Or, technically just a ‘being,’ scratch the human part. Still, you felt a bit desensitized to all this. And so did she. You related in that way.
“I can’t say you exactly passed with flying colors, but you fulfilled your end of the agreement well enough.”
Without any warning, you were back in a white void with CORE!Frisk, just like before. You almost forgot about the deal you made, what with all the time you spent with Poppy. You stood.
“Uh… yeah. So, my reward…” you drifted off, remembering the offer Core gave you. The chance to meet just about any AU character of your imagining… or at least, any that would be peaceful enough to be in the Omega Timeline. Which still left a WIDE variety of options…
Who did you want to see? What mattered most to you?
...
Thinking deeply… you told Core their name.
“...Oh. Really? Well, I guess it makes sense for you that you’d want to see them,” Core remarked. “I can’t guarantee they’ll give you what you’re looking for, but a deal’s a deal. Let’s head off.”
You and Core went somewhere else.
---
And that’s all she wrote! If you read this far, thank you. Working on the game since then has been fun, and I think you’ll like what we have in store. Until then, ciao.

Meet the Parents: Four
A/N: This is the last part of this series and a late Valentine’s Day entry. Enjoy another piece of the Chad and CoCo saga. I love you guys!
Warnings: Not Proofread
Word Count: 5212
Tumblr media
“Our parents are coming to visit next week.”
Tasha let the sentence fall from her lips like an observation about the weather and not a random declaration in the middle of weeknight dinner. Chadwick sat beside her on the couch, eyes trained on the television before turning his head for a view of the side of her face. Even in her profile he saw embers of worry smoldering behind her eyes. Chadwick quickly chewed the last bits of black beans in his mouth to answer.
“What?”
“Our parents,” she repeated, finally looking over at him. “They’re coming to visit next week.”
“Our parents? As in just your parents or -.”
“Both sets. Yours and mine. They are going to be in this house next weekend under the impression that we haven’t talked in years when we’ve been playing house for almost two months.”
“Yeah, so,” Chadwick added, not seeing the issue. “We’re grown. Shit happens.”
“My parents think that I’m getting married next fall, Chadwick. They think I’m still with Elijah.”
Chadwick stopped chewing to cough up pieces of rice that had shot to the back of his throat in surprise. “Shit.” He paused to gather himself as Tasha leaned forward to rest her forehead in her hands. “Okay, that explains your folks. How are mine involved?”
“My mama took it upon herself to contact your mama and, I think, they’re on a mission to help us reconnect like this is some family drama or something.” Tasha kept her lead low while her fingers placed air quotes around reconnect. A split second of silence hung in the air until quiet snickering caught her attention. “I’m glad you think this is so funny.”
“It’s too ridiculous not to laugh, baby.” Chadwick fought to stifle laughter as he watched Tasha stand and stomp off toward the kitchen. He hadn’t intended to belittle her feelings, but he wasn’t sure how to process the information. “C’mon, T. I’m sorry!”
In their shared haste to explore a new chapter of their relationship, neither Tasha or Chadwick had alerted their families and friends. Sure, a few people had made assumptions, but nothing that they speculated equaled solid proof. To call the lack of information a secret was too harsh. They preferred the term oversight. But now, with a visit from their families looming, the new couple needed a plan that included cleaning up said oversight without admitting to what would surely be seen as an outright lie.
Tasha stood in the kitchen angrily scrubbing at an empty sauce pot when Chadwick walked in and leaned on the counter beside the sink. He watched with a fond smile for a moment before reaching to grab her wrists and pull her close.
“Hey, look at me,” Chadwick requested, taking Tasha’s chin between his thumb and index finger. Hip lips pressed gentle kisses on her nose and mouth until she relented and returned his affection. “We’ll be okay.”
“You say that like you have a plan.”
Chadwick smiled and pecked Tasha’s lips. “I always have a plan, baby.”
To Chadwick the solution was simple: play along with their parents and finish the long weekend without giving up more information than was necessary. If their mothers wanted to believe they’d done a good deed, let them.
Together, they spent days fine tuning their deceit. Tasha made sure to remove any trace of her existence from Chadwick’s house, scouring the home for an out of place pair of heels or a wayward piece of mail in her name. Chadwick crafted an intricate script with details so precise that CoCo had begun to believe their lie.
The night before mom-eggedon, as Tasha had named their arrival, the couple lay tangled in bed tightening their story.
“So, we’ll have to delete each other’s number for this to work. It’ll look weird if my name pops up in your contacts.”
“How would they even see? I’ll go to another room.”
“That looks suspicious. You have to make the call in front of her.”
“Okay,” Tasha agreed, sighing as she scrolled through her contacts and reluctantly removed Chadwick’s number. “What else?”
“Make sure to grab your bonnet and headscarf before you leave in the morning. Or I can stash them in my drawer. Let me know.”
“You pick. I... need a break.”
Tasha’s sudden bout of anxiety was enough to end any and all conversation that night. She has resigned to the notion that she would have to come clean the minute her parents stepped off of the arrivals sidewalk and slid into the backseat of her car. Still, she was careful to use her best poker face in the off chance that she was home free. Chadwick didn’t share her worries, but he empathized. His parents weren’t nearly as invested in his personal life. He wasn’t the one due to be married in a year’s time.
Sun beat down on Tasha through the windshield of her car while she anxiously glanced in her rearview mirror for any sight of her parents. She hadn’t slept the night before and slipped out of Chadwick’s bed early to avoid any talk of the weekend. In her mind, if she left without speaking to her boyfriend, she could easily forget their connection. She was wrong. All she could think about was ringing his line for another dose of reassurance.
Tasha’s eyes followed a parking official making stops at each car along the curb, silently praying that her parents would emerge from the building before she was handed a ticket.
“Come on, come on,” she whispered, hoping she could will them outside. Her fingernails tapped nervously on the dash until, finally, she caught a glimpse of her mother’s traveling hat moving toward the sidewalk. She bounded from the driver’s side in a single motion and waved her hands for their attention.
“Mom! Dad! Over here!”
“My baby!” Elaine was the first to greet her oldest daughter, leaving Gerald to grab her rolling luggage and haul it to the car.
Tasha smiled as her mother pulled into a hug way too tight for her tense body. “Hey, mama. You travel safe?”
“As safe as I could, child. Your daddy complained the whole time, but we’re here now.”
“Set your old man up with first class tickets next time, Pumpkin. I need some room for these knees.”
“I’m sorry, Dad. I’ll upgrade you for the flight back. Let me grab those.”
Gerald tried to wave Tasha off, but he was too slow. Tasha had already started to channel her nervous energy into overextending her hospitality. Every question was answered with an uncharacteristic amount of enthusiasm. Neither of her parents noticed as they marveled at sights and sounds of Los Angeles. They sat with their faces nearly pressed against the car windows, rattling off questions and observations about the state of the city. Complaints about the traffic earned a laugh that was too loud for the conversation and a shared look of concern between Gerald and Elaine.
“So, how is Elijah,” Elaine asked, looking at Tasha through the rearview mirror with a smile. “We haven’t heard from or about him in about a month. Is he okay?”
Tasha’s foot stuttered on the break as she pulled into her driveway, making the car jerk in response. She took a breath and rolled her shoulders back before answering.
“He’s fine, I suppose. We... aren’t together anymore.”  Tasha’s jaw clenched at the admission and shook her head. She hadn’t said the words aloud yet.
“Oh, baby, I’m sorry to hear that.”
“He wasn’t good enough for you anyway, Pumpkin. His ears were too big to have nothing in between ‘em.”
Tasha chuckled as she shut off the engine and opened the driver’s side door. “Thanks, Pop.”
“I agree with your father. Now, you have more time to wait on the man that’s supposed to court you, not the other way around. You know, I know a guy.”
“Mhmm,” Tasha mumbled. “Here, let me help with that.”
Gerald stopped pulling suitcases from the trunk and kindly pushed his daughter’s hand away. “I got it, Pumpkin. Take your mama inside. She’s been dying to see your house.”
Tasha laughed at her father’s thinly veiled plea for alone time before ushering her mother into her home. Elaine stepped into the foyer and paused, taking a long look at her surroundings. Beside the door, a basketball rested by a black duffle bag.
“You’re playing basketball again,” she questioned.
“Every once in a while I play with the girls as the facility. No big deal.”
Elaine took another look at the oversized sweatshirt barely hanging out of the bag. “Hm.”
Before Tasha could address Elaine’s non-verbal judgement, her mother had moved on to the living room. Elaine stopped to examine photos and sculptures carefully placed on each surface, finding many of them to have ties back to home or family. Her fingers ghosted over awards from her daughter’s time away from home and she smiled. If Elaine was nothing else, she was proud of Tasha.
While she listened to her husband and daughter wrestle luggage into the house, Elaine carefully took a seat on the large sectional to rest her aching legs. The way she flopped against the plush piece of furniture surprised Elaine, making her giggle but stop when she got a whiff of the air around her. Beside her head lay a dark fleece blanket and she took a deep inhale to place it as a source of the masculine smell.
“This is a nice blanket, Nicole,” she complimented. “It looks warm.”
“It is. Got it on a trip back from Connecticut last year. Great naps have been taken under that thing.”
What Tasha thought as a random fun fact about her favorite blanket made her mother smirk with realization. She knew the smell of a gentleman caller when she encountered one. Though the information wasn’t enough to stop the plan she had in motion, she felt a strange comfort in knowing that Tasha was living a life that pleased her, something Elaine had drilled into her and her sister’s head since their pre-teen years.
“Dad, you want a drink. I have this expensive artisan beer that Ch... a friend left over. When they visited. A friend.”
Tasha stilled to slow her rapidly beating heart at her near mistake. Neither of her parents had seemed to notice and, for that, she was silently grateful.
“My girl is drinking beer now,” Gerald questioned with a wide smile. “Becoming just like your old man.”
“Yeah, well, I dabble. Gotta keep up with the white boys at the Lakers game.”
“Atta, girl. Beat ‘em at their own game. C’mon, show me.”
On one side of town, Tasha busied herself with introducing her parents to the wonders of pale ales and stouts, while on the other, Chadwick emptied grocery bags filled to brim with dinner ingredients. He spent much of the process silently scolding his parents for placing items in areas he knew CoCo wouldn’t enjoy. When his mother moved to place the entire jug of orange juice in the door of the refrigerator, Chadwick couldn’t resist the urge to stop her.
“Actually,” he started, intercepting her before she could place the jug. “I have some pitchers you can empty that into. They’re nice, I promise.”
His mother eyed him as he retrieved a monogrammed pitcher from the cabinet and rinsed it in the sink. The last time she’d visited, he barely had food in the refrigerator. Now, he had specialized pitchers for juice.
“Where did those come from?” Carol asked, trying to get a better look at the glassware.
“Crate and Barrel. I went with a friend a couple weeks ago and they suggested them.” Unlike Tasha, Chadwick had a solid grasp on his lines and practice keeping secrets.
“Hm. This friend suggest those vanilla candles in the living room, too?”
“Those were a gift. Want one? I have a few more in the linen closet.”
“No, I’m alright. Just... noticing some changes.”
“Like what?” Chadwick asked as he stashed breakfast meat in the refrigerator drawer.
“You live alone now. That’s new.”
Chadwick shrugged, seemingly unphased. “It’s been a couple of weeks. The split was mutual. We’re on better terms these days.”
That was an assumption on his part. Chadwick didn’t know the status of his friendship with Charmaine, but he harbored no ill will. Carol opened her mouth to speak but was cut off by her husband walking into the kitchen with a big smile.
“Hell of theater you got back there son. I bet the big game looked good on that big ‘ole screen.”
“Wanna try it out? I think the playoffs start tonight.”
“What about dinner?” Carol asked.
“We’ll eat early. It’s just us right?”
Chadwick tried to avert his gaze once his mother started to look between him and his father. He didn’t want to let on that he knew more than she had shared.
“Well, that’s what I wanted to talk about. You remember Tasha, right?”
“She was my best friend, ma,” Chadwick laughed. “Of course I remember her.”
“I know, I know. But did you know she lived here now?”
“She mentioned it when she sent a gift for the movie.”
“So, you two talk again?”
“We’ve talked once or twice.”
“Have you met up?”
“No.” Chadwick answered, keeping his voice flat to appear neutral. Carol smiled in a way that indicated she had information to share. Chadwick allowed the charade to continue.
“Well, I heard from a little birdie that her parents are also in town this weekend. Maybe you should invite them over.”
“Ma, I don’t know if we’re back on those terms yet. It’s been a while.”
“I know,” Carol answered, drawing out ‘know’ as she took steps toward Chadwick. She latched onto his arm and smiled up at her son. “But, what if she stopped by? Just for dinner?”
Chadwick looked between his parents, paying special attention to his father’s grin. He’d never known his dad to be invested in his private life, but there was always spark behind his eyes when Tasha was involved.
Finally, Chadwick pretended to relent.
“Alright, ma. I don’t have her number, though. How will I call?”
Carol clapped her hands like a giddy child and started a search for her phone. “Don’t you worry your head, boy. I have her number right here.” She extended her arm toward his face. “Go on. Call her. I wanna hear you.”
Chadwick felt his body tense and mind begin to scramble for a response. He had expected to make the call when a moment of solitude presented itself. Now, he was forced to go off script and risk throwing Tasha off balance. On a whim, he decided to grab his mother’s phone to make the call.
The phone rang once, and then a third time before Tasha answered.
“Hello?” she answered with a genuine question thick in her tone.
“Hey, Tasha. It’s me...Chadwick.”
Everyone listened as the sounds in the background became louder before CoCo responded. “Hey, Chad. I have you on speaker. My parents are here.”
“Hi, Chadwick!”
“How ya doin’, son!”
Both Tasha and Chadwick chuckled at her parents' excitement.
“I’m good. Good to hear from y’all. Welcome to LA.” Chadwick listened to Elaine and Gerald share various versions of thank you before continuing. “Hey, so, funny thing...my parents are here too.”
“Oh really? Give them my love. I know they miss me.”
“We miss you so much, sweetie! Why don’t you come eat dinner with us tonight.”
Chadwick chuckled at his mother’s excitement, “That was my line. She beat me to it, but the invite stands. We’d be happy to have y’all over.”
“We’ll be there!”
“Ma!” Tasha and her mother argued in hushed whispers on the other line, nearly making Chadwick forget that the whole conversation was a carefully planned charade. “I guess we’ll be there. You’ll send the address?”
As if she needed it. “Sure. You’ll get it from another number, okay?”
He wasn’t sure why, but Chadwick felt butterflies flutter in the pit of his belly as if this were truly the first time he was seeing the love of his life. He welcomed the feeling and smiled on the other end, making his parents join in on his happiness.
“Great. See you soon,” Tasha answered, a hint of smile in her voice to match Chadwick’s.
They hung up with promises to text for more details and inside jokes that made only them laugh. With a few white lies, they had tricked their parents, and nearly themselves, into believing they were set to embark on a glorious reunion between college friends.
Tasha spent hours rifling through what little clothing she still had at her condo, tossing outfit after outfit onto her bedroom floor until she came up with something she felt would catch her man’s eye.
Across town, Chadwick and his mother arranged and rearranged the dining table dishes to ensure that he was putting forth the best “first” impression. They settled on elegant china that Chadwick felt was a bit too formal for the occasion, but he let it stand. At the very least the flatware would impress Tasha’s parents.
As Tasha drove through Chadwick’s neighborhood, she made sure to maintain a facade of discovery. She didn’t take the normal shortcuts or skip the growing pothole on the street that tormented her each day on the way home from work. She pretended to be surprised at the ornate sculptures crafted from bushes at a nearby house and the amount of expensive cars in the driveways they passed.
“The boy is doing well for himself,” Gerald commented from the backseat.
“Very well. But, we always knew it’d be like this. Chadwick was destined to be big.”
Elaine spoke about Chadwick as if he was some utra celebrity and not the same kid that she had to constantly remind to slow down while he ate so that he wouldn’t choke on his food.
Tasha laughed as she pulled into his driveway. “He’s a movie star. It’s to be expected.”
One by one, the Greene family stepped out of the car into the crisp, early Spring air and started up the short driveway toward the door. Tasha hung back and examined the house from the outside, admiring how the two potted plants they’d placed on the porch were starting to go into one another like their namesakes.
Gerald rapped his knuckles against the door several times before Elaine scolded him for being rude as she pressed the doorbell. When Tasha caught up to her parents, the door opened and sent light from the inside spilling onto the front porch. Chadwick popped out of the house with his arms open wide.
“Family!”
He gripped Tasha’s parents into tight hugs, sharing familiar pleasantries as he welcomed them into his home. Elaine stuttered when it was her turn to embrace, taking a deep whiff of Chadwick’s shoulder and feeling transported to a moment earlier in the day. She kept quiet, but took note of his hug with Tasha as he moved on to greet the other members of the household. Elaine noticed the way he seemed to hug her like a man familiar with the curvature of his lover’s body and shared a look with Carol that spoke louder than words.
As a unit, they quickly fell back into familiar behaviors, catching each other up with life’s happenings and new discoveries. On the far end of Chadwick’s sectional, he and Tasha sat close enough to share side conversations that only they could hear.
“Just like old times,” Lawrence, Chadwick’s father, commented over his glass of water. “You two haven’t changed in over 20 years.”
“What you mean, dad? We’re just over here talking.”
“That ain’t just talking,” Gerald chimed in. “Y’all always had your little secret language.”
“And a knack for keeping each other’s secrets.”
Tasha looked over at Elaine who sat with a knowing smirk on her face that unsettled her daughter. Chadwick easily maintained his cool as he sipped from his wine glass.
“That’s how it goes when you’ve been friends this long. We are still friends, right?”
Tasha felt her cheeks become warm through her bashful smile. “Of course. Always.”
Both sets of parents looked on with fond smiles while their kids shared a moment of rekindling a little more than longtime friendship. Elaine and Carol exchanged winks to congratulate each other on a job well done.
“Well isn’t that sweet,” Carol spoke after clearing her throat. “But, I think the roast is done. Can we move this moment to the dining room?”
“Yeah, sure. Tasha, can you help mama in the kitchen? You need help right, mama?”
“I’ll take it wherever I can get it,” she laughed.
“Now, you know you don’t ever have to ask me for help. I’m right behind you.”
The group quickly dispersed to different corners of the house, leaving Tasha and Carol to explore Chadwick’s kitchen on their own. Tasha took it upon herself to reach into the drawer beside the stove and grab pot holders. Carol watched her move around the space as if she had been there a thousand times.
“Did you say you’ve visited Chad before?”
Tasha looked back as she opened the stove and shook her head. “No, ma’am. This is my first time.”
“Hm. Okay.” She continued to watch Tasha carefully slide the roast out of the oven and close the door with her hip. When Tasha turned around, Carol tried to recover a moment too late. Tasha smiled nervously.
“Is something wrong?”
“No,” Carol quickly answered. “I just...I thought...it doesn’t matter. I’ll grab another bottle of wine and meet you in the dining room.”
Carol’s pivot seemed to do the trick once Tasha carried the main dish to the dining room. Chadwick sat at the end of the table with a mixed look of boredom and relief once Tasha entered the room. He sprung up to retrieve the dish from her hands, but Tasha gripped his hands to stop him.
“Your mom is being weird,” Tasha whispered.
“Your’s too. She noticed that bottle of air freshener you always spray in here and asked where it came from.”
“What is she a fuckin’ bloodhound?”
“She is you,” Chadwick laughed. “I think I got us out of it, but be careful.”
Carol’s entrance forced the pair to separate and pretend to focus on different tasks. She eyed their charade for a moment before looking over to Elaine and their aloof husbands solely focused on dinner.
She took a seat beside Lawrence just as Tasha settled in next to Chadwick while trying to avoid eye contact.
“So, who’s going to say the blessing? Tasha?”
Tasha’s eyes grew wide, “Oh, I’m probably not the best person. You know how I am with words and this isn’t my house anyway. How about Chad?”
“Uh, sure. Everybody bow your heads.” Tasha squeezed Chadwick’s hand as a silent thanks and clamped her eyes shut to avoid the daggers he sent in her direction. Chadwick took a deep breath in search of words to fit the occasion. “Lord, thank you for bringing us together again tonight. Especially Tasha and I as long time friends. We-”
“Hope that you will use all of us to tell the truth about our love for one another. Please, don’t let this night pass without every feeling and overlooked detail put on the table. It’d be a shame for us to leave here holding on to what you put on our hearts to share.”
Amens, both genuine and forced, sounded around the table to signal the end of Elaine’s awkward prayer. The group sat in silence while scooping food onto their plates. Tasha and Chadwick attempted to remain inconspicuous.
“Chadwick, how’s Hollywood treating you,” Gerald asked between bites of food.
“Ah, you know how it goes out here. I go to work, come home and avoid all that foolishness in between. The pay is good though. I can’t lie about that.”
“You better be avoiding the foolishness. Tasha, now that you’re here, keep my boy straight.”
“Yes, sir,” Tasha laughed. “If I’m not good at anything else, I’m good at bossing him around.”
“Did Tasha tell you that she’s single now?”
“Ma! We literally just got here. When would I have had time to share that?” Tasha shot her mother a glare across the table and received a shrug in return.
“I only asked a question. Are you single Chad?”
Chadwick chuckled as he slipped his hand under the table and gripped Tasha’s thigh. “No, I didn’t know she was single and, yes, I am recently single. The last relationship didn’t workout quite the way she hoped.”
“Sounds like you two have something in common.”
“Oh you and what’s his name aren’t together?”
Tasha caught Chadwick’s obvious sarcasm and brushed his hand off her leg. He continued to laugh at her expense, leaving no room for her to unleash her frustration beyond a curt smile.
“You know his name, Aaron. And, no, we are not. That is my business to keep to myself.”
“Alright,” Chadwick answered. “Maybe I can hook you up with one of my actor friends. I hear Anthony Mackie is looking for someone your type.”
“I’ll pass. Actors aren’t my thing.”
“Hm. That’s not what I heard.”
Chadwick jokingly nudged Tasha’s shoulder, garnering a look from Elaine and Carol.
“What did you hear,” Carol asked. “Don’t the kids say something about the tea?”
“Nothing. Chadwick hasn’t heard a thing but a seminar on how to still be annoying after 20 years.”
He laughed and wiped his mouth. “I’m pretty good at it, too. You look a little flushed, though. Want more wine?”
A simple diversion pushed the conversation into talks of wine tasting and how to pair reds and whites, effectively ending all relationship talk for a stretch. Underneath the table, Tasha and Chadwick took turns letting their hands wander. The cat and mouse game quickly grew inappropriate with fingers buried between thighs and palms gripping sacred parts over thick denim fabric. Their parents enjoyed helping after helping of food until each person was stuffed and nearly falling out of their seats. Lawrence, however, wasn’t done.
“I could go for some dessert,” he mentioned during a lull in the conversation. “What we got in the kitchen?”
“Mama, you got that cheesecake I ordered, right? Tasha, wanna help me grab it.” Chadwick had been thinking about a way to briefly separate from the group to sneak a kiss or a hug and, finally, he’d found an out.
Tasha peeped the hint of demand in his voice and nodded. “For sure. You know you have butter fingers anyway. We’ll be right back.”
The pair didn’t give their parents time to reject the offer before they scurried out of the room. When they made it into the kitchen undetected, Tasha pulled Chadwick into a searing kiss. He chuckled against her lips while fondling her backside.
“Your joke was not funny,” Tasha mumbled before breaking the kiss. “Mackie? Really?”
“Gotta make it realistic, baby. You handled it like a champ.”
“Mhmm. Next time, I’m coming with jokes about your relationship.”
Chadwick allowed Tasha to slip from his grip and head to the refrigerator. He watched her hips sway for a second before reaching into the cabinet to grab dessert plates.
“Which ones do you usually use?”
“The white marble. Grab the gold forks to match the decor. You did a good setting it up by yourself.”
“Do you know how hard it was to keep my mama from moving stuff around?”
“Probably as hard as it was to keep mine out of my office. Why can’t they be like our dad’s?”
“Because then we wouldn’t love them as much,” he added. “Only a couple more days of this and then I can have you back in here with my shirts on.”
“Oh, so, we aren’t meeting up for some car sex tomorrow.”
Tasha stepped closer as Chadwick lifted a brow and watched her beneath hooded lids. “Don’t tempt me, baby.”
“Now, Aaron. You know that ain’t my style. I’ll call you. We’ll call it lunch.” Balancing the tray of cheesecake in one hand, Tasha pressed a quick kiss against Chadwick’s lips before turning to leave the kitchen.
“Who wants cheesecake,” he hollered as he followed Tasha back into the dining room with a smile.
Both sets of parents watched the couple attempt to pass out slices without bumping into each other, taking note of the clear gloss making Chadwick’s lips shine. Lawrence tried to send messages to his son to wipe his mouth but all of them went unnoticed. Elaine and Carol shared smiles while Gerald stifled a laugh.
After passing out each piece of cake, Tasha and Chadwick took their seats and found all eyes on them.
“What,” Chadwick asked as he stabbed a fork into his cheesecake.
Lawrence cleared his throat. “I think you have something you need to share, son.”
“Like what?”
“Maybe Tasha will know,” Elaine added. Tasha forced a laugh and smiled.
“I don’t even know what’s going on right now. What are you talking about?”
“How about you start with how long you and Chadwick have been seeing each other. And be honest this time, Pumpkin.”
Tasha and Chadwick froze. In the mirror above his parent’s head and noticed the evidence of their secret still on his lips. There was no sense in preserving the farce. They were caught red handed. So, he smiled and shook his head. Tasha finally relented with a hearty laugh.
“When did you know, mama?”
“Child, as soon as I smelled man on your couch and hugged this one at the door. You have to be smarter than that.”
Carol chimed in and pointed at Tasha, “And this one went in the kitchen and started pulling things out of the drawer like she owned the place.”
“You don’t think we noticed the glassware in the fridge? You drink orange juice out of the carton and now all of a sudden there’s pitchers all over the place.”
“Since when do you drink beer, Pumpkin. I knew you either had a boyfriend or you were going through a midlife crisis like your mama when she only drank martinis for a year.”
Chadwick and Tasha listen to all the places they had neglected tiny details, feeling slightly foolish that they’d tried to pull the wool over the eyes of the people that knew them best.
“Okay, you got us,” Chadwick admitted. “This was all Tasha’s idea. I wanted to tell y’all right away. It’s been almost two months of this lie she made me tell.”
“Oh, hush! I just figured we would tell you when we were ready. Well, when I was ready. I’m sorry, y’all.”
“It’s okay, sweetheart,” Carol answered.
“This just gives us more time for planning.”
Tasha raised an eyebrow while leaning into Chadwick’s side. “Planning what?”
“The wedding of course,” Elaine exclaimed. Tasha’s groan became covered by Chadwick’s boisterous laughter.
“Lay ‘em on me, Ms. Greene. What you thinking?”
“How do feel about a rustic wedding, Ooh ooh, let me go grab my phone. Did I tell you I have a Pinterest now?”

Bloodlines AU - Tiny Warmths Part 1
The cane clacked against the Schnee Manor's front door. Winter was welcomed by Klein who always showed her to the living room, knowing she needed a rest from the trip back home for the newest addition to the home.
"Long flight, dear?" Willow asked by the staircase, sniffing her coffee.
"More like a long sail, mother. We were inspected for hours by sea/air traffic control." Winter grumbled, walking over to the sofa.
"Yes, I heard about it from the news reports. You'd think they would recognize our snowflake by now."
"I'm not sure I want to test that theory." Before she could sit down, she was welcomed by a hug from her blue-haired brother-in-law.
"Good to see you Winter."
Winter returned the hug best she could. "You as well, Neptune. How's fatherhood?"
Neptune could only sigh. "Exhausting so far. He's almost five months and I feel like I'm still getting used to all this."
"Weiss certainly wasn't kidding about how anxious you've been." She was handed a spot of tea. "Thank you, Klein." Then she turned back to the spearman. "Is my sister adjusting any better?"
“Surprisingly. But Nicky's been dealing with colic pain, so patience is a virtue she’s been having better than me. She's taken to this so much easier than I have."
Winter sipped at her tea. "It can't be easy with both you and her running businesses."
Neptune sat taking a cup of tea. "It's not, but we've adjusted and tried to settle into a routine. Even when she's at her busiest she refuses to hire nannies and will rock or breastfeed him while on a business call."
Winter tented her fingers. "It's funny. I never really considered how that works until seeing the photos she sent me while I was overseas."
"Pretty much no choice if he’s cranky.” Neptune answered. “He won't take a bottle from Klein. That’s how much he’s already making up his own mind.”
Klein aided Willow on her way to the recliner. "I believe the important part is that I'm trying, sir."
Neptune smiled at the butler. "You are. And we are so thankful for your help, Klein."
Willow sat back down. "He's less fussy when we get him on diaper duty. But clearly..." She grunted, sitting slowly onto the chair. "Clearly he's more in favor of his mom and dad right now."
"How are your back pains, mother?" Winter asked.
"Little stiff today.” Willow answered. “I'm only having one coffee cup for Nicky's sake, due to all the hustle and bustle of preparing for a visit before you arrived."
"Weiss is changing him right now." Neptune pointed out.
Winter exhaled. "Right. Meeting the nephew...How should I present myself?"
"Just be yourself." Neptune said plainly.
"You mean the military woman shtick minus the sternness." She asked.
“That sounds about right.” Weiss Schnee answered right behind her big sister.
Winter turned her head, seeing a joyful Weiss having just gotten off of work for the day with a bundle in her arms. Inside the blue blanket was Dominick Karl Schnee, cocooned and eyeing his mother fondly. Weiss bounced him in the blanket turning him around to face a new relative.
“Dominick, can you say ‘hi’ to your auntie?” His mom requested.
The future heir revealed his little face to Winter.
He weighed in at 8 pounds and 3 ounces in a handsome little bundle of his father’s bronzed skin, light blue eyes included. His mother’s alabaster hair was spiky but neatly groomed in time for being the up and coming prince of his family’s corporation. The baby stared through Winter, moving his tiny arm out and grabbing the edge of his snuggie.
The Specialist took the plunge by reaching out her hand with an adjustment from her cane to let him hold her bigger hand. “Um…Hello, Dominick. I’m your Aunt Winter.” She greeted after a heavy pause.
The baby reached out by placing both hands around Winter’s trigger finger.
She flinched from the sudden grapple. “Is this his way of reading people?”
“I think he’s trying to figure out who you are.” Neptune observed.
Weiss gave a big smile. “Would you like to hold him? You’ll be fine, just be sure to support his head.”
Winter reached out, gently taking her nephew and still appearing uncertain. Unfortunately the toddler disagreed. Who was this mysterious lady who looked almost nothing like mommy?
Her grasp felt unwelcoming with baby Nick kicking up a fuss. Winter cringed looking up to her sister in a panic.
“Shh-shh-shh, it’s okay honey. Mommy’s here.” Weiss cooed. “Try rocking him a bit.”
She rocked him back and forth. Except this wasn’t the left-and-right direction. This was back and forth, on the couch where things had been static. The boy whimpered from the incorrect rocking, shielding his eyes and curling up.
Weiss frowned. “I'm sorry Winter, he's just not used to you yet" She took back her son, bouncing him again to soothe his cries.
Winter frowned next. “I would know having raised you.” She wanted to comment.
Dominick was suddenly calm being set back down on the couch by Weiss. He curiously eyed the living room around him when Weiss stood up stretching across from her kin. “I’m guessing you were hoping to ask how Neptune is adjusting, sister.”
“The thought crossed my mind back on the tarmac.” Winter replied with a nod.
Neptune could only sag his shoulders. "I'd like to say that I am but then I’d be fooling myself. Last night, Weiss was in a board meeting and I swore I could get Nicky to bed. I don't know what I did wrong but he screamed his head off for almost fifteen minutes until she came to bail me out."
“It was...Troubling.” Klein recalled while he handed his infant master a rattle and chewing ring.
Weiss nodded next. “Took me a little bit to calm him down, taking even longer to bring Neptune back into his usual bouncy self.” She squeezed her husband’s shoulder when he sank further at that recollection.
“I thought he didn’t like me. But can you blame me?” Neptune defended himself. “He always stops crying for you.” He groused.
“He just needs to take some time in getting to know you, dear.” Willow coaxed. “Klein could tell you a thing or two about that.”
The butler folded his arms with a sigh. “I take no joy in being the bearer of bad memories here. But mum is right, seeing as how...He was away at work,” Klein hissed, holding back his grumpy persona. “It took our snowdrops plenty of time to adjust to myself. Until one day they started speaking hand gestures asking where she was.”
“And how does that help Neptune?” Winter asked.
“I am saying is that there must be a moment for you and young Master Dominick to connect, just the two of you. Seems I got lost in translation there, sir.” Klein admitted to the blue-hair.
“Yeah, fair enough.” Nep conceded. “It's hard to settle a baby when there's so much commotion around the manor. And he's so attached to Weiss, that I thought we'd have that instant connection. He's my son but I guess it's just as hard on him as it is on me."
During his rant, Neptune saw Dominick following his dad’s words with a quizzical head tilt. “You like me, right little fella?” He wiggled his tan finger for him to see.
The baby took a moment to look upon his rattle. Then to the ring in his mouth. Take daddy’s hand, his 5-month-old instincts told him. Nick set the rattle down and grabbed Neptune’s finger with both hands, then babbled in an interested tone.
The intellectual laughed. “Yeah I’m your daddy. Can you say ‘daddy’?”
He cooed in D-sounds, but moving onto B-noises as he wasn’t opposed to learning new noises.
Weiss folded her arms proudly. “See? He’s learning.”
Neptune picked the baby up, flashing a goofy grin and holding him proudly. “My boy!”
Nicky squealed happily and joined him in a laugh whilst reaching for his rattle. Nep bent over, handing the rattle to him and holding him to his chest during one of his evening bounces.
Winter gave the slightest hint of a smile at the bonding moment in front of her while going back to her sister. “Among the other things I’m learning to catch up on, the delivery must have given you hell.” She said.
Weiss held onto her own stomach underneath the lovely sweater.
“It was...An experience. A scary one, to be sure. But Neptune ensured I stayed in bed while I was recovering. Minus a few stitches, I’m as defiant as ever. Hopefully.” She blinked slowly while watching her son and hubby in the background.
“How bad was it?” Winter asked while snapping a picture of her nephew’s playtime.
“Klein said I was working too hard” She woefully began. “That’s what brought on the labor. However, Yang was kicking in the door and kept me calm just in time. When the contractions started, I was already aboard Yang’s Manta craft while Ruby and Neptune held onto me during our flight to the hospital.”
Winter patted her sister upon the back.
“Neptune was so panicked, and it took so long that I was wheeled in for an emergency C-section.”
“Did they go through with it?” Winter’s expression turned to that of fear. Hadn’t her sister been stabbed and nearly cut open enough times during the Salem war?
“No. But the labor was quite long.” Weiss finally answered. “While Neptune was panicking outside it was the sisters who were keeping me steady. Before they could break out the knife, Dominick was- -Ahem…” She rubbed her eyes with an itchy throat. “Apologies...Dominick was born safe and sound. So we agreed we were having only one.” Weiss sniffled.
Don’t get her wrong, it was a happy memory. But the pain was more than enough to warrant a single offspring and heir being held in her husband’s arms. Winter dried her bottom eyelid on sisterly muscle memory.
“I’m glad that he’s here.” Winter added. “Thankfully, you’re not feeling the way Blake is right now in her pregnancy.” She mentioned.
“Oh, what have you heard from her?” Weiss lightened up at hearing about her cat teammate.
Winter folded her arms. “Only that she’s feeling stir-crazy. Moving around is quite difficult for her right now. relying on Nora and Ren for their recipes in case of any strange appetites...Though Ruby has contributed some odd ideas."
“That makes Sun at her beck and call.” Weiss guessed.
“Yes, quite.” Winter answered. “You probably don’t want to know what cravings Ruby conjured up for her.”
“Somehow I’m not sure that’d help with Nicky’s colic deal.” Weiss mused, grinning at hearing a joyful squeal behind her with her husband’s starry-eyed reaction. “Oh, mother. You haven’t held him yet.” She offered.
“I bet he’s been looking forward to spending some quality time with his oma.” Willow beamed. She held out her aging arms to her son-in-law. Neptune handed baby Dominick over with the rattle included.
Willow took the rattle and handed it to her grandson, rocking him back and forth with the proudest smile she could bear at 57 years with how he’s already turning out.
“Are you happy to see your Auntie Winter yet, my Little Yeti?” She teased.
Nick cooed after a prompt nose boop from the matriarch.
“Little Yeti?” Winter questioned.
“It’s cute, but I prefer to call him Snowdrop or Nicky.” Weiss admitted, shrugging.
“Yeah, you’re gonna grow up into a big monster and give mommy and daddy the runaround huh?” Neptune baby talked to the...Well, baby.
“Please don’t jinx it, Neptune.” Weiss insisted.
The infant could only blink at his remark.
“He was awfully big for his age when he came into the world.” Willow answered, giving him a kiss on the cheek. “But it just proves his strength and how he didn’t mean to give his Muti such a hard time. No you didn’t!” She teased the little one next, giving him a raspberry earning another laugh.
Weiss gave a dreamy sigh. “Oh, don’t you worry just yet my little snow monster. We’ve got a lot more to figure out.” She earned a babble of agreement out of her son.
Winter got up. “And hopefully he...Mmgh.” Another grunt, she steadied herself with grasping the cane. “He won’t run too much when I’m on babysitting detail. I’ll be in my office.”
Her sister got up, taking her arm. “Here. Let me help.”
“I’m okay, Weiss. Really.” The specialist insisted with her cane wobbling at her sister’s touch.
“No you’re not.” She backtalked. But not before supporting her. “Is your leg acting up again?”
“...Yes. My painkiller prescription has been delayed ever since President Baum had cut back on Specialist healthcare in light of the frontline grunts. Not that I blame them.” Well, that hurt to mention the G.I.'s of Atlas in light of her own health problems sustained in the line of duty.
“Then you should be in bed.” Weiss demanded. Not as CEO, but as her sibling.
Winter nodded. “Good idea. Klein, could you please get my laptop?”
“Certainly, Winter.” The butler answered. “You do look like you need a leg pillow as well.”
“It wouldn’t hurt.” Winter answered with a small smile. “Mother, Neptune, will you be alright with Dominick?”
“Of course, dear.” The older mom told her.
“Yeah, we got him.” Neptune answered with another warm nod.

Today was a depressing day for the young Y/N. You may ask why a depressing day and what happened? Her grandfather sadly passed away. The news hit her like a truck. For years, no one of her family members died until she's a young adult. She was just keeping herself busy in her room, her house until she got a phone call from her mother. She got the devastating news. She dropped her phone and cried a lot.
When a few days passed by, she didn't show up at the scrapyard like she usually does. Everyone there got very worried about her. Y/N won't pick up her phone whenever they called. She even got a lack of sleep and refused to eat. She then showed some symptoms from not eating anything like headaches and dizziness. She laid for hours on her bed.
At the scrapyard~
Optimus is the leader of the Autobots and he's a mentor to Bumblebee. He's helping the scout (or now warrior) how to be a good leader to his own team, The Bee Team. Optimus is a leader for kilocycles (years). He knows exactly how it feels to be a leader when he/she is struggling to control the team. When Team Prime was together at the time, he had times and moments where he loses it. One very clear memorable clip is where Starscream escaped with Omega Keys.
Y/N is his sparkmate for a long time. They love each other to death. They're even connected to each other! He became anxious when he didn't saw Y/N for a few days. She visits the scrapyard every day. He understands when she doesn't appear for a day or two but almost a week passed by. He knew that something was wrong... but what? Everyone got the answer why.
"Everyone, I got very sad news." Denny walked to the bots and Russel while holding his phone. He had a sad expression.
"What is it, Denny?" Bumblebee asked worriedly.
"Y/N's grandfather... passed away. That's why she didn't show up."
Everyone looked shocked. Some of them looked sad while others looked with sympathy. Y/N's grandpa was an old man and he did have problems with his heart his whole life. He had to take medicine and take it easy. He did have a couple of heart attacks but he's immediately saved at the hospital.
Years later, his health got worse, including his living conditions...
Optimus looked very sad and with sympathy. His poor sweetspark. He had no idea that she's suffering... He knew what he had to do. He transformed into his famous semi-truck form and drove off. The others knew what he's doing so no one stopped him.
With Y/N~
Y/N was just crying on her bed while holding a photo of her grandfather and herself when she was a baby, taking her first steps. It is a very important memory of hers. She feels guilty for not telling sooner to others like why she hasn't shown up and what's bothering her. She couldn't help it. She feels weak a lot and hasn't left her bed in hours. She does drink water at least.
She didn't hear footsteps quietly to her. She cried harder due to the memories of her grandfather but she gasped and yelped when she felt servos on her. She struggled but she quickly calmed down when Optimus shushed her and comforted her.
Y/N looks over her shoulder slightly and cried. "O-Optimus..."
"Shhh... I'm here, my sweetspark. I'm here." His voice was so soft, soothing, gentle, and comforting that you could get lost.
Y/N whimpered, sobbed, and cried softly. She felt Optimus pulling her into his arms. That caused her to have a melting breakdown against his chassis. She was also shaking. Optimus tried his best to calm his mate down. He felt very broken when his previous mate, Elita-One, previously known as Ariel, got offlined by Megatron, who was once like a brother to him. Optimus didn't show emotion after Elita died. He just had to be a darn leader and not show any weaknesses. It was extremely hard for him. He learned to move on but seeing his mate suffering in pain, he felt sad. "Please try to calm down, my dear."
"I... I c-can't. I-It's just..."
"I know, sweetspark. Shhhh..." Optimus shushed her and continues to comfort her.
Y/N just let her feelings out. She continues to cry hard until she felt no more tears were rolling out. Optimus was there the whole time. He comforted her, soothed her, shushed her, caressed her, held her, and even whispered sweet things into her ear. He gently pulled away (while still holding her) in order to face her with care and love. "How did your grandsire passed away, sweetsprak?"
Y/N breathed due to crying hard. She knew that he's not forcing or pushing her to tell. She can already tell and see it in his optics. "I-It just... happen suddenly. H-He just stopped eating and drinking. He... refused. H-He also... got another heart attack. He n-never... woke up."
Optimus looks with pure sympathy. A lot of old people rather die peacefully in their sleep than by disease. In fact, dying in your sleep is painless because you don't feel anything. When someone is dead, then what will happen to the body? Well, Y/N's grandfather wants his body to be... cremated. Cremation. Or maybe these words will understand you more: it's where the body is burned until the dust is left. Y/N's grandfather doesn't want bugs to eat his body so the family granted his wish. When the dust is left, then it will go in a beautiful vase and stay there forever. The vase can go to the funeral or either at your home. When the body is buried in the coffin, then it can take like 100 years for the body to be a full skeleton. Skeletons can also be dust and the only thing that will remain is teeth. No kidding.
Optimus wiped Y/N's tears away with his digits. "Did you eat anything? When I look at you at your body language and read your expression, you didn't have enough of recharge."
Y/N truthfully shook her head no. "N-No... I just... couldn't. I did had headaches and felt dizziness."
Optimus sighed and cupped her face gently and looked deep into her eyes. "Please eat and get enough recharge, sweetspark. It happened to me too after I lost Elita. Ratchet warned me to eat and get enough rest or else he'll force me to go to the hospital where they'll feed me and put me to sleep. I... I can't bear losing you."
Y/N went quiet. So, her lover went through the same with Ratchet's warning? He is a doctor after all and it means that he knows everything about conditions like Y/N is suffering right now.
Optimus kissed her cheek lovely. "You're not alone, sweetsprak. We're here for you, including your grandsire in your human spark."
Y/N couldn't help but snuggle up to Optimus, who gladly held her and started to rub her back to make her go to sleep at ease. He also massaged her scalp on her head since it's like every woman's weakness to go to sleep or relax. She finally closed her eyes and fell asleep. Optimus watched over her and he made sure that she went back on her feet.
I nearly landed in the hospital because of a lack of sleep and not eating enough. My mom warned me to start getting enough rest and eat a lot or else I'll have to go to the hospital.

I Found- Chapter 1
A/N: Hey folks!  This is little visit to the past in honour of the one year anniversary of Extraction and this fic itself.  As of tomorrow, I will post two to three chapters A DAY until all are up.  I know they’re a mess on my blog right now and people who don’t want to go to Ao3 can’t find all the chapters. I was going to thoroughly edit, but I thought ‘why not leave it as is?’.  It’s a little more than 365 days old now and a lot has changed for both the characters and my writing itself. As my long time readers and supporters can tell you :).  So keep in mind, this was my first foray into writing Tyler and it’s rough and it’s a little...not the me I am now...but it’s a fun ride, IMO.
Fandom: Extraction
Pairing: Tyler Rake and Esme Rake (Original Female Character)
Face Claims: Chris Hemsworth (obviously) and Rachel Bilson
Premise: Broken and bleeding. Weathered and in tatters. Two damaged and weary souls find one another when they least expect it. Wrong place, wrong time. Yet both powerless to stop it.
Summary: Eleven months after the events in Dhaka and his near death experience, Tyler Rake is a new man. A different man. Struggling with the demons of his past while balancing being a husband and a father.

It's been just shy of twelve months and his instincts are still keen; nerves rash and fresh, body and mind always on high alert. The proof to the old adage that old habits really do die hard.
A journey to the very brink of death. Weeks of lying in a hospital bed teetering on the threshold of this life and the next. Countless agonizing hours of rehab and physical therapy just to relearn the basics and get back onto his weary and battered feet. Once he was home nothing had been able to slow him down. He threw everything he had into healing. Every ounce of mind, body, and spirit. Pushing himself past the warnings and the limits that the doctors and specialists had set for him. Ignoring the advice on not to push himself too hard, too fast. He felt as if he didn't have a choice. He no longer just had himself to worry about; another human being with one on the way that was relying on him. Depending on him to take care of them. Provide for them. Protect them. So he had pushed himself to the brink of both exhaustion and physical and emotional collapse. Eventually finding himself back at at the gym and packing on the weight and muscle. Anxious for some semblance of the man he used to be.
He hears the soft rustle of blankets though the monitor on the nightstand and his eyes immediately snap open. Sleep was a strange beast for him these days. Nights where he could fall into a peaceful slumber and stay there until sunlight was streaming through the window, others where the pain was all encompassing and nauseating and he couldn't get comfortable, and those where he was haunted by the demons of his past. The latter didn't come nearly as often as they did before; managing to find some hint of internal peace with the things he had done and witnessed. Once in a while he'd find himself back on that bridge; assaulted by the smells of gun powder and lead. The acrid taste of blood on his lips. And he'd hear her voice and feel her hands; the way she cradled his face in them, the way she'd pulled his nearly lifeless body tight against her, felt those tears that fell on his skin. Thankfully he'd awaken and quickly discover that he was in the safety and comfort of his own home. His own bed. And he'd watch her as she slept; the way the moonlight painted her smooth skin in an ethereal glow and the slight smile that tugged at the corners of her mouth. He'd watch her and listen to her breathe and he'd remind himself of just how far he had come. Gratitude spreading through him like a slow burning fire. Thankful for the second chance that he'd been given. For the love that he'd found during one of the darkest and most difficult periods of his life. She'd given him a reason. A purpose. And he wasn't going to take that for granted.
He groans as he rolls over onto his back. The pain isn't as bad tonight. There were times he could barely even move. Where the agony made him dizzy and nauseous and even the simplest of tasks seemed impossible to preform. Tonight it's a dull ache; a nagging pain that has settled deep into his bones and his joints but he has learned to deal with. Placing his hands behind his head, he waits and listens. The lights from the monitor dancing across the ceiling as life stirs in the room across the hall. He's gotten used to it; the little noises, the soft sighs, the slight fussing before she settles herself back to sleep. It wasn't his first rodeo after all; not his first foray into fatherhood. But it is the first time he's been able to be more hands on. Put his be all and end all into the nurturing. And this time he knows he will get it right. He's determined to make amends for the mistakes of his past. Moving on didn't mean forgetting. It didn't mean that the love and regret and the guilt weren't still there, lingering just under the surface. Sometimes the greatest homage to the dead was how the living continued. How they made up for the bad decisions they made and how those decisions had...in the end...helped shape them into a better person.
The sounds through the monitor continue and he sits up, swinging his legs over the side of the bed and giving his body and brain time to adjust to full consciousness. Running his hands through his hair and over his tired face, fingers brushing against the various scars that serve as a lasting memory of his former life. A pair of sweats sit in a discarded pile by the bed and he reaches for them; softly muttering profanities at the various cracks and pops that his body makes at the simple task of pulling on his pants. Scar tissue, arthritis, remnants of shrapnel and bullets that couldn't safely be removed. All working together to be a complete pain in his ass. His wife moves behind him. Sighing loudly and contently as she rolls over onto her side. Not waking as her hand instinctively reaching out for him; finger tips brushing against his back just as he stands up.
He is out the door and in the hall before the first shrill cry erupts. Yawning and stretching noisily as he steps into the nursery. A cheerful room with soft yellow walls, pink, white, and purple stripped curtains and natural wood furniture. Teddy bears and dolls staring down at him from the perches on the shelves on the wall, accompanied by framed photos of baby animals and Disney characters. He'd never pictured himself a 'girl dad'; frilly dresses and the tiny socks with the lace around the ankles, and the little headbands that served no other purpose than being cute. He was rough and tumble. Always had been, even from an early age. So when he'd found out he was having a daughter he'd been terrified. He didn't know the first thing about taking care of little girls and doing their hair and healing their broken hearts. And for the first time in his life was actually scared of something. Or someone. A being that hadn't even been born yet but was already making a huge impact on his life.
“You'll be fine,” his wife had assured him when he'd expressed his concern. Watching from the couch as she stood at the kitchen table folding laundry. Including a newly purchased outfit and those tiny teeny socks that she had purchased just hours ago. She was so beautiful. Standing there with that chestnut hair tumbling down to her waist, her belly swollen with their child. HIS child. A child that had been conceived in the midst of all the chaos and uncertainty. “You've ridden this particular bike before,” she'd reminded him. “This isn't your first time going through this.”
“That was different. That was a boy. This is a girl. This is dresses and pig tails and tea parties and make up and other boys.”
“Tyler, that's years down the road. You can't worry about that stuff. Make up and boys? You can't dwell on what she's going to be like when she's a teenager.”
“I sure bloody well can. Because knowing my luck she'll end up just like her mother. Full of piss and vinegar and all kinds of trouble.”
“You always did know how to get yourself into heaps of it,” she'd smirked, and tossed a pair of balled up socks in his direction, just missing his head. “But you always managed to get yourself out of it too.”
“I knew you were trouble from the very second I met you, you know,” he'd said, as he got off the couch and wandered over to where she was so diligently working. Liking the way that simple white gold wedding band looked on her finger. He still hadn't gotten used to; it had only been a few months and even with that life growing in her belly, they were still very much enjoying being newlyweds. He liked it. Being a husband. He liked the simplicity and the comforts that came with the little things that took up their new life. Household chores and preparing meals and sharing a bed with the same warm body and beautiful face each and every day. Mundane to some. A welcome change and relief to him.
“I wasn't the one with the reputation for being difficult,” she'd reminded him. “I wasn't the one who was like a bear with a sole asshole even on his best days.”
“Yet here you are. Playing house with me. A good little wife. Giving me babies. So I must have done something right, huh?” he'd playfully nudged her with his elbow. “You stuck around. Through thick or thin. I put you through a lot of shit and agony and here you are. Here WE are.”
“You can't get rid of me that easily, Tyler Rake. You think you would have realized that by now.”
“Getting rid of you is the last thing I ever want.”
They'd stood in companionable silence; working quickly and efficiently together. Little boring tasks that they almost never got to experience. He'd never take things like that for granted again. And he'd grabbed a pair of her underwear from the fresh pile and hooking them around his finger, grinned as he swung them around.
“How'd we ever graduate to these, huh? These are not what I remember you wearing. You weren't wearing any the first time we...well...you know...”
“You're such a pig,” she'd grumbled, and tried to snatch them away. Frowning when he held them high above his head. Not an easy reach for a woman that only stood five foot three. “What is wrong with you? Seriously.”
“I thought you were trouble the second I met you. The way you shook my hand. The way you smiled at me. But I knew it for sure when I had you pinned against that wall and I put my hand down your shorts and realized that you weren't any underwear. Remember that? That first time? I knew I was in trouble but I didn't want to stop. I couldn't stop. I was surprised you were such a kinky little thing.”
“You've got issues. What is your major malfunction?”
“Nothing wrong with a little visit to the past. Especially when it involves being naked.”
“Would you stop?” she'd perched herself on her tip toes and frantically tried to grab the offending piece of clothing from his grasp. “What's gotten into you?”
“It's what hasn't gotten into you in a while,” he'd retorted, laughing when she'd directed a slap to his gut, his arms circling her waist when she'd lost her balance and tumbled into him. And they'd stood like that; her head against his chest, his eyes closed and his chin resting on the top of her head. Loving all those things about her that had become so familiar and comforting to him. The lingering scent of coconut shampoo that clung to her hair, the feel of her heart beating against him, those small and soft hands stroking up and down his back. This woman...the one that had seen him at his most fragile...who he owed his life to.
Her hands were on the back of his shoulders when she'd pulled away and looked up at him. Her eyes sparkling as she smiled. A smile he had once thought he'd never see again.
“I love you,” he'd told her. Three words that he had always hesitated on uttering before but now couldn't say enough. If Gaspar was still around he'd call him soft. Tell him he was whipped and a pussy and needed to get his balls back. But he wasn't around anymore.
A lot of people weren't.
“I know,” she'd said. “But not nearly as much as I love you.”
“Hey, this isn't a competition. And if it was, I'd win. I always do.”
“You have a very overinflated sense of yourself,” she'd chided.
He was her rock. He knew that. Even when he was still recovering and he was nothing more than a mere fraction of the man he once was. Even when she had to help nurse him back to health and he'd had to trust her completely with even the mundane things like feeding himself and brushing his teeth. But she'd stuck by him. Even when he felt humiliated that he even needed help with such things. Embarrassed that she was seeing him so vulnerable. Allowing her to see his tears of anger, frustration, and pain. She'd always said that he was the only one that made her feel safe and secure. Protected. Even when he wasn't at his best.
“Shit...” She'd grimaced when the baby had kicked her especially hard. Eyes closing and her forehead falling onto his chest.
“Even I felt that one.” He’d e'd move one hand from her waist to her ever growing stomach. Marvelling at the way he could feel their baby...his baby...moving inside of her. It may not have been his first time. Not his first child. But he was determined to enjoy every second of it and not take a single moment for granted. “See what I mean? Trouble just like her mom. Feisty as all hell. A boy wouldn't cause this many issues.”
“Boys come with a whole shit load of issues. After all, it was a boy that got me into this situation in the first place.”
“Come on now, I wasn't the only one that was having all the fun. You seemed to be enjoying yourself too. I didn't make this baby all on my own, you know.”
“It was fun,” she'd admitted. “It always is.”
“Yeah. It most definitely is.”
One of her hands came down to rest on top of his and they stood there together, feeling their child moving inside of her. Marvelling at all the kicks and wriggles. At the miracle that they had created. All because two people fell in love during the entirely wrong time and in the entirely wrong place.
“You need to take it easy there, sweetheart,” he'd spoken to his daughter, his hand moving in slow, comforting circles. “Go easy on your mum, okay? Daddy's already put her through enough to last a lifetime.”
“She listens to you already. She likes your voice.”
“Already takes after her mother. Isn't that one of the first things you said you liked about me? My voice?”
“It does funny things to my insides. Even now.”
“I like doing funny things to your insides,” he'd dropped a kiss on the top of her head and she'd looked up at him once again.
“I think we should go to bed.”
“It's only eight thirty.”
“I don't mean to sleep. I mean to do other things. Fun things. Things that help you sleep better.”
A slow grin had spread across his face.
He didn't need to be told twice.
*******
“What's going on in here?” he asks as he steps alongside the crib, where his tiny baby girl has managed to to shed herself of her tight swaddling and was preparing to whip herself up into a frenzy. She has his temper already; slow to anger but almost impossible to control once the fuse was fully lit. “What kind of trouble are you getting up to in here? How'd you get yourself into such a mess? Clever little thing, aren't you.”
The crying dies down. Settling down to a mere whimper. She recognizes her daddy's voice. His face. And she knows she's in good hands. The wailing replaced by an impossibly dramatic pout on someone so young.
“You really are your mother's daughter,” he says. “I recognize that look anywhere. How does a little one like you get yourself into trouble? Look at you...” he untangles the receiving blanket from between her legs and scoops her up from the crib. Lifting her to the safe and warm confines of his chest. A forearm supporting her bum, his palm on the back of her head. “It's okay now,” he croons, and presses a kiss to the side of her head. She has his hair; same texture and colour. His eyes. Even his nose and lips. He can hear his wife now. Complaining about doing all the leg work and going through all the pain, only to have the baby coming out looking just like him. “Daddy's here now. Everything is fine. You're okay now.”
After a quick diaper change, he carries her through the apartment and into the kitchen. That tiny little body laying perfectly along his forearm as he warms a bottle from the fridge. She fits so perfect in the crook of his arm; head nestled into the valley on his elbow, feet by his wrist. She's long. Lanky. Just like he'd been as a kid. “You're probably wondering why I'm out here doing this,” he speaks as he waits for the bottle to warm. “You know this is usually your mummy's thing. Getting up in the middle of the night. And I know she doesn't exactly use these silly things to feed you. But I thought we'd be nice and let her sleep. She does a lot for us, you know. She deserves to sleep.”
He sits on the couch as he feeds her; both feet on the coffee table, knees bent with her lying along his thighs. One hand holding the bottle and the fingers of the other exploring every inch of her. She is wondrous; big blue eyes and impossibly long dark lashes and freckles across the bridge of her nose. And has he talks to her in a deep and soothing tone, her gaze is focused intently on him. Eyes never leaving his, one of her tiny hands reaching for the hand that holds the bottle, all fingers curling around just one of his. He had forgotten what this was like. The pure magic of being a father. Knowing that you had helped create something so incredible. That you had played a part in bringing another human being into this world.
As crazy and fucked up as the world could be, that is. It gave him a sense of peace. The knowledge that when the end came, he'd go knowing that he had done something truly good and valuable with his life.
He stands and carries her over to the balcony window. Once again holding her with a forearm under her bum and a firm hand on the back of his head. “You see that out there...” he nods towards the skyline; twinkling lights of skyscrapers and glowing street lights and blazing stars. “...that can be a real scary place. There's a lot of really bad people out there. But there's a lot of really good people too. People that would protect you, no questions asked. People that already love you without even really knowing you. And somewhere out there, is some guy that's going to come into your life and probably break your heart. And you know what? That's okay. It's okay to get your heart broken. Because it makes you a better person. It makes you stronger. Even if you think it's going to kill you at the time.”
She stares up at him with those huge blue eyes. With so much wonder and trust that it it causes a lump of emotion to gather in his throat and blur his vision.
“You know, there was almost a time where this might not have happened. Where I might not have been here. Where it might have just been you and your mom. And if it wasn't for your mom, I probably wouldn't be here. She's something else, you know. She's the bravest and strongest person I've ever met in my entire life. And there were so many times where this could have been too much for her...where I could have been too much for her...and she could have just walked away. But she never did. She never gave up on me. Even when I was ready to give up on myself. She's the one you need to worry about, you know. She jokes around that I'm going to be the one that scares all the boys away but I have a feeling it's going to be her. She doesn't let anyone mess with the people she loves. She's a momma bear. She's ferocious and she's loyal and she will f...” he bites his tongue “...mess someone up if she needs to. I was even kind of scared of her when I first meet her. Not because she's scary looking or I was afraid she'd hurt me. Mind you, she probably could if she got mad enough. Like how she gets when I leave the toilet seat up in the middle of the night. She scared me because I'd never felt that way about anyone. At least not that quickly. You can be the strongest person in the world, but when that one person comes along, you can't stop it. No matter if the timing isn't right. No matter how screwed up things are. Even if it is the wrong place, wrong time. You're powerless. Your heart just takes over. The important thing you have to remember is that you let your heart and your head work at the same time. That's the only way things will be okay. Or at least that's how it worked for your mom and I.”
He adjusts his hold on her, bringing her up to rest against his chest. Fingers combing through her thick, silky hair, his other hand softly stroking her back.
“Your mom came into my life when I'd pretty much given up on everything. When I didn't even feel human any more. Where nothing mattered. She came into my life and rescued me. In every way a person can rescue someone. And I know she'll probably deny that if you ask her. She'd say that I'm the brave one. That I'm the one that rescues people. But she had the toughest job out of them all. I'm not the easiest person to love. And she knew that. Yet here she is. A year later and she's still sticking around. Still putting up with my crap. So I must be doing something right, yeah? She hasn't smothered me with a pillow in my sleep or put poison in my food or put a hit out on me.”
“You just had to ruin the moment,” that soft voice says from behind, and he watches her reflection through the window as she journeys over to them. Chestnut hair messy from sleep and falling loose to the middle of her back. She is heavier now; softer and curvier in all the right places. Having a baby will do that to you. But she's still the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. Even more so decked out in one of his shirts; the fabric hanging to well below her knees, sleeves rolled and bunched just about her elbows. “What are you two doing? It's late. Or really early. Depending on how you look at it.”
“We're just having a little daddy daughter bonding time.”
She squints her eyes and peers at the clock on the nearby wall. “It's ten after three.”
“Time means nothing when you have a baby. She doesn't know what time it is. And I barely sleep, so...”
“So what does this bonding time consist of? Shit talking me?”
“I only said that last part because I knew you were behind me. I said all good things, I swear. And I was telling her all my best stories.”
“Lord I really hope not,” she rubs his shoulders and presses a kiss to his back before sidling up beside him. “All your best stories are gory.”
“I'm saving those ones for when she's old enough to be able to kick someone in the balls if they're bothering her. So she doesn't have to rely on a brother to do it.”
“Not even two months into this and you're already contemplating another? Good luck doing that yourself. Let me know how it works out for you.”
The subject had come up once or twice. About whether or not this was a one off or there were other children in their future. After he'd lost his son and given up on life, he hadn't thought there'd be any other kids. It wasn't as if he lived the kind of life he'd be proud to bring a child into it. She'd been a complete surprise. They thought they'd been careful. Apparently they hadn't been careful enough.. But she wasn't a mistake. Far from it. A happy accident was more like it. Now that he'd gotten his feet wet again in the parenting pool, he was open to having more kids. He craved it, actually. Another two or three. And a modest house on a good parcel of land. Somewhere close to the beach. With a window that looked into the backyard that he could watch his children through. Where he could grow old and gray with the love of his life.
But he still had a lot of shit to deal with before any of that could happen.
She yawns loudly and steps in front of him; both arms wrapping around his waist she lays her head against him. “Are you okay?”
“Best I can be, I guess. Little sore. But what else is new.”
She just nods. She knows it goes beyond being 'a little sore'. She had seen the extent of his injuries. She'd lived out the horror right alongside of him. It had been his blood that soaked her that day on the bridge. But she also knows he isn't the type you fawn over. He doesn't like the attention. Feeling as if he's weak. Or that he may be a burden. He was still trying to get that confidence back. The ego takes a serious beating when you're left unable to do even the smallest of tasks for yourself. “You're having trouble sleeping?”
“When haven't I had trouble sleeping?”
“But it's worse now, isn't it. I know how many times you get up in the middle of the night. It's worse now.”
“Just a stage,” he assures her. “I'll be fine. How many times have we been through this, huh? How many times do I have to tell you not to worry about me?”
“A million. But I still won't listen.”
“That's never going to change,” he teases. “You didn't listen to me a year ago and you don't listen to me now. And you wonder why I say your daughter is going to be trouble.”
She grins up at him. “Why does she become just my daughter when you talk about trouble?”
“Because we both know who the real trouble maker is in this relationship,” he retorts, and presses a kiss to her forehead.
In silence they watch their daughter; the way her eyes shift between the two of them before slowing beginning to close, a yawn escaping her mouth. A surprisingly large one that ends in a tiny squeak. He's in awe of her. Of how tiny and fragile she is. How he'd managed to make something so amazing.
“She's beautiful,” he speaks around a lump of emotion that sits square in his throat. His emotions have been raw since that day in Dhaka. And even more so since becoming a father for a second time. He can hear Gaspar in his head again. Talking about how soft he was becoming. That he didn't even recognize him any more. That growing a heart this late in the game was going to be his biggest downfall and his most relentless enemy. “Like her mother.”
“She looks just like you.”
“I honestly don't see it,” he hopes he sounds a least a tad sincere.
His wife gives a derisive snort. “You have some seriously strong genes, Tyler Rake. Imagine if we had a boy? Probably be your splitting image. By the way...” she rubs his stomach and smiles up at him. “...you do the really big, strong man with a tiny baby thing very well. It's kind of sexy.”
“Just kind of? I was going for totally sexy. Insanely sexy. You might as well said mediocre sexy.”
“Don't expect me to stroke your ego at three in the morning.”
“Why not? Not like you've been stroking anything else lately.”
“Shhhh...” she places a finger over her lips. “...there's innocent ears in this room.”
“She's asleep. And even if she wasn't, she wouldn't understand what I was saying anyway. Besides, she's going to end up learning where she come from sooner or later.”
“Well let's make that later. Much later. And mediocre sexy? Really? As if you could ever be anything other than out of the world sexy.”
“You're lucky. I was going to have to file for divorce if you called me 'average sexy'.”
“You're too much,” she giggles, and dropping one of her arms from around his waist, runs the palm of her hand along the baby's hair. “And you're right. She is beautiful. She is perfect.”
“It's hard to believe sometimes, isn't it? That we made her? During all that craziness and all that madness, we actually made a life together. Surreal, huh? That something so beautiful could come out of all of that?”
“A lot of beautiful things came out of that. We just have a hard time recognizing what they are sometimes.”
He nods in agreement. Sniffling noisily and swallowing heavily when the weight of emotion becomes almost too much to bear. He's never had to hide this side of himself when it came to her. After all, she was the one who'd successfully bulldozed all of his walls to the ground. So it comes as no surprise to either of them when the tears finally do come; blazing hot against his skin, the taste of salt stinging his lips.
“Baby...” she turns to face him, reaching up to take his face in her hands. “...what's wrong? What...?”
“Nothing's wrong. I just...” he struggles to find the words, inhaling deeply and releasing a shaky breath. “...thank you...” he says. “...for her. For you. For us.”
“I think you played a pretty big part in her being here,” she reminds him. “It's not like I did this alone.”
“I don't deserve all of this. I don't deserve her. I don't deserve you. This...this life...” he shakes his head. “...this was meant for someone else. A better man than me.”
She chews pensively on her bottom lip and regards him through her own tears. He knows she won't let them come. She's been the one holding back lately. When they'd met, she'd been the high strung and overly emotional one. Always on edge. Waiting for the other shoe to drop. He'd been that calm, cool, and collected one. The one that held shit together when it threatened to blow apart. Talking her down off the ledge while trying to keep both of them...and eventually Ovi...alive. Since the baby she'd changed. Her motherly instincts and her love for their child could never be matched by anyone else. But she had closed herself off in other ways. She became the strong and silent one. The one who always held her emotions in check. He figured it was all that time she spent helping him get back on his feet. What she'd seen and had to endure would harden anyone.
But he'd be lying if he didn't say he wasn't concerned. If he didn't find himself wishing for that emotional and broken girl she'd once been.
She was out there. And he knew where.
She was still back in Dhaka.
Still standing on that bridge.

                                            -----------------------------------
After a particularly exhausting training session with Coach Azuma, Haruka was relieved to finally drop his bag in the genkan. Makoto was already home, sitting on the bed with folded legs, faced away from the door. Haruka's heart swelled with fondness when he saw him.
"I'm home," he said as he took off his shoes, but when he didn't receive a response, he frowned. Was Makoto wearing earphones or had he simply not heard him?
Deciding to surprise him, Haruka tip-toed over to the bed and hugged Makoto from behind, wrapping his arms around his neck.
"Haru!" Makoto yelped and he dropped his phone on his lap. "You scared me!"
"I did call out to you, but you didn't reply."
"Sorry, I didn't hear." Makoto turned his head and pressed a kiss to Haruka's cheek. "Welcome home."
Haruka smiled and seized the opportunity for a proper kiss. This was what he looked forward to all day, so he made sure to savour the feeling of Makoto's lips sliding over his oh so tenderly. Once satisfied, he leaned his chin on Makoto's shoulder. "So, what are you looking at that's more interesting than me?"
"Also you," Makoto giggled as he picked his phone back up and showed Haruka the screen. It was a picture of the two of them together as toddlers, their little hands and faces covered in fingerpaint. "My mom was clearing out the attic earlier and she found all of my baby picture albums, so she scanned them and uploaded them on the drive."
"Oh," Haruka said, releasing his hold on Makoto to sit down beside him. "Show me."
Backing out to the previous screen, Makoto scrolled up to the start of the file and selected the first picture: a tiny baby with one thin strip of hair on his head, lying inside his mother's arms in the hospital. Mrs. Tachibana was smiling brightly, but her eyes conveyed immense fatigue. She once told him Makoto's labour had taken nearly twenty-eight hours and that was clearly visible on her face.
"This was taken right after I was born," Makoto said as if Haruka couldn't tell, "My very first picture."
"You look like a potato."
"Hey!"
"What?" Haruka shrugged, "You look good now, but there you looked like a potato."
"I guess you have a point." Makoto chuckled. "Most of these early pictures all look the same, so I'll go through them quickly to spare your eyes."
Judging by the number of pictures there were, it was clear Mr. and Mrs. Tachibana were very excited about their baby and were determined to capture every yawn and giggle. Not that he expected anything less of them.
"How long did it take your mom to scan all of these?"
"All day," Makoto said, "She started this morning and only got through a few albums. She hasn't even gotten to my third birthday yet, let alone the birth of the twins and all their albums."
"Sounds like she's going to have her work cut out for her the next couple of weeks."
"Yeah, but she's determined. She wants to make sure our pictures are always saved somewhere else, in case a fire or something like that happens."
That wasn't a bad idea. Living in the digital age, Haruka hadn't thought twice about his baby pictures and how they weren't stored in multiple places. It would be a shame if all those pictures, including ones of his grandma, would be lost. He wasn't sure whether his parents took the old family albums with them to Hokkaido or not, so he'd have to check when his mom called. Otherwise, their next trip to Iwatobi would probably look a whole lot different.
They flew through the first year of Makoto's life. With every picture, Makoto's cheeks grew a bit chubbier and his hair fuller, and after a couple of months, he started to look like himself: like the cute little kid that would soon become Haruka's very best friend.
Then, after Makoto's second New Year's and the shrine visit, spring came and with it, a flood of memories. The Tachibanas packed up all their stuff in their tiny apartment and moved into their house in Iwatobi. There were no pictures of what happened right afterwards, but Haruka vaguely remembered it.
By the hand, his mother led him down the stairs, to the house beneath theirs that was previously vacant. A new family had moved in, so they had to be polite and welcome them to town. His father told him he saw the new family had a little boy around his age and claimed he was sure Haruka and he would become best friends. Back then, his dad had no clue how right he would be.
When they entered the garden, a large man was walking towards the moving truck, but he stopped and smiled when he saw their family. He introduced himself and called over his wife and their son to come meet the new neighbours.
That was the first time he saw Makoto; on his mother's arm, clutching her pink sweater in his pudgy fist, large green eyes filled with wonder.
"This was right before we first met," Haruka said when the picture on Makoto's screen showed him sitting among the boxes in their living room. "You were wearing these dungarees."
"Really? I'm surprised you remember that."
"Our moms love to tell this story, so I'm not sure if I actually remember it or if I've just been told so many times that I think I remember it," Haruka said, smiling as he studied little Makoto's bright grin. "You were so happy and bubbly, yet when your mom took you to meet my parents, you were trying to hide in your mom's chest. It wasn't until you saw me that you showed your face."
Makoto smiled too. "I was shy back then. Meeting new people is scary."
"You weren't scared of me, though."
"How could I ever be scared of you?" Makoto said, "I already knew back then that you would be my best friend, the person I would love the most." Makoto continued swiping through the album and a handful of photos later, Haruka made his first appearance. They were sitting on the couch together, mouths full of cookie crumbs. "And we've been inseparable ever since."
Haruka couldn't help but mirror Makoto's expression. "Who would've guessed back then that we would be here two decades later?"
"Me," Makoto said, "I always knew we would stay together, no matter what."
"Is that so?"
"Hm. I knew that nothing could ever happen that would make me want to stop being with you."
Heat rushed to Haruka's cheeks and he averted his eyes. How could Makoto say these things so casually, without a blink or a stutter? "Idiot."
"I mean it," Makoto said as he put his phone down beside him and wrapped his arms around Haruka's body. "I loved you then, I love you now, and I'll love you every day yet to come."
His tone was a bit teasing, like he purposely wanted to embarrass him, but that didn't make the sentiment any less genuine. "I love you too," Haruka said, and before Makoto could say more things that made him want to run out the door and jump into the nearest pond, he pressed a long, silencing kiss against Makoto's lips.
Two decades worth of memories were stored not just in photo albums and on their phones, but also in their hearts. They would continue to make more memories together in all the years yet to come.

There Goes My Life - Chapter Six
A/N Their picture perfect family......
Tumblr media
Saturday, November 6, 2038
Daniel and Florence came down to visit the girls the following weekend – mostly because Penelope’s near breakdown the prior Sunday had Daniel a bit of a nervous wreck – and the whole family of five went out for lunch together. Penelope was perfecting the art of ignoring her older sister, not wanting to even hear the shred of an apology from her the entire week.
But Clementine truly felt badly for being so short with her little sister at the party…she should have known better than to be so sharp and aggressive with her especially knowing Penelope was a sensitive girl. They had been best friends for nearly their whole lives and Clementine couldn’t stand having Penelope being mad at her.
“Nell, can you open up please?” Clementine knocked again on her sister’s door that morning just before they were due out front for lunch with the rest of their family.
There was shuffling from the other side of the door but no response.
“Penelope.” Clementine tried again. “I’m sorry about the party. I really am. I shouldn’t have been such a jerk to you. I hate having you mad at me, please talk to me.”
The door swung open, revealing an unimpressed looking Penelope who turned back to her room to grab her purse from her desk, letting her older sister step inside.
“If this is how you act here then I don’t want anything to do with it.” Penelope said strongly. “You have the right to do what you want but I don’t want to hear about it or be a part of it.”
“Okay.” Clementine mumbled.
“Okay.” Penelope agreed flatly, pulling on her jacket. “They’re downstairs. Let’s go.”
“Can we hug it out first?”
Penelope tried to keep a straight face but her older sister’s little shy smile and held open arms made her break a little and she walked into her embrace.
“Think dad’s gonna cry today?” Clementine whispered as they headed out of the room and towards the stairs.
“Probably when they leave again.” Penelope chuckled, tucking her room key back in her purse on the way to the lobby.
When they left the building and turned the corner towards the parking lot, their family was already getting out of the car and Clementine powered ahead to throw her arms around Daniel.
“Sweet girl.” he chuckled, pressing a kiss to her head as she pulled back just enough to look at him.
“Hey, Dad.” she smiled sweetly before switching to her mother.
Penelope wrapped her arms around Daniel’s middle and he pulled her into a hug as he pressed a kiss to her hair with a little ‘mwah’ before resting his cheek against her head and saying a soft, “I missed you.”
“I missed you too.” Penelope mumbled, holding him tightly a bit longer with her head against his chest.
“You okay, bug?” Daniel asked quietly, petting her dark hair gently.
Penelope nodded and pulled back from him, “Just ready for lunch that isn’t half cold in the school cafeteria.”
So they all got into the car, the three sisters jammed in the backseat together and Clementine grabbed the phone right out of Daniel’s hand to pick the music for the car ride herself.
“Sure, go ahead.” Daniel chuckled, too happy to have all his girls with him to even be too mad over her slightly rude gesture. That was classic Clementine anyway, ready to do what she wanted.
“Pick something good this time.” Lucy demanded.
“All my choices are good.” Clementine scoffed.
Penelope snorted which earned her a light glare from her older sister.
They agreed on a little diner by the lake and got seated in a booth by the window overlooking the water. The family couldn’t even be silent enough to look over the menus as the girls were too excited to share their stories from all they had missed in their time apart. When the waiter came over to take their orders, no one was ready so they had to ask for him to come back.
With a momentary silence over them as they all skimmed the menus, Clementine leaned against Daniel’s shoulder and he draped his arm around her as they read and he drew haphazard little patterns over her arm. Florence sent him a small smile from Clementine’s other side and he returned it.
When they had ordered and were waiting for their lunch, conversations arose again.
“So how have you two been? Driving each other crazy yet?” Florence asked the two oldest.
“A little.” Penelope chuckled, acknowledging her older sister’s slight warning glare as she worded her response. “But just the usual stuff.”
“Same as at home. But here we get our own rooms at least.” Clementine added lightly.
“I wouldn’t know the difference.” Lucy boasted, smirking teasingly between her two sisters.
“You get your own room cuz you’re the baby.” Clementine sang mockingly. “Daddy’s little princess.”
“We don’t have favourites.” Daniel tisked.
“But if you did, then Lucy would be your favourite.” Penelope piped up.
“She would not.” Daniel scoffed.
“Wow, Dad.” Lucy frowned.
“I’m just saying; I don’t have favourites.”
“Maybe your favourite is the nineteen-year-old you’re cuddling up with at lunch in public.” Lucy jabbed.
“Oh my gosh.” Daniel breathed, looking to Florence who only smiled widely at him and his exasperation.
“I am the favourite.” Clementine agreed sweetly, tucking her arm around his middle. “The first is always the favourite. Right, Daddy?”
“That’s right, angel.” Daniel agreed, shaking his head towards the other two girls.
“I’ve just accepted the fact I am no one’s favourite parent.” Florence sighed dramatically, taking a sip of her drink.
The girls rushed over each other to assure her that they loved her just the same and they didn’t have a favourite; Clementine shifting over to hug her mother instead.
“You’re my favourite.” Daniel assured his wife, earning him a kiss from her and a wave of ‘ew’s from the girls.
Lunch arrived to their table a few moments later and they all began eating, the chaotic energy of the family still high as they ate and spoke over each other as they got settled again. Penelope kept glancing across the table at Clementine, how her sister seemed to be back to her usual self with the family; sweet and witty and the perfect innocent daughter. It made her nervous. She hated lying and keeping these things from her parents didn’t sit right with her; but it wasn’t her place so she kept quiet.
“Wait!” Lucy dropped her fork onto her plate to reach into her bag and pull out a small album. “I had to make this for class and I brought it to show you because I got the best mark in the class!”
She shoved it into Penelope’s hands first, the small black book titled simply with their last name written in cursive in silver glitter pen.
“It’s a photo album of our family history!” Lucy explained excitedly as Penelope turned to the first page.
Clementine leaned over the table to look at it upside down.
The first page was a picture of Florence and Daniel from when they first met, the photo taped to the center of the page with decorative trim and a date on top and a little handwritten textbox underneath by Lucy herself summarizing what was in the image. The following page was a picture of Daniel and newborn Clementine in the hospital, standing by the window and he was looking down at her with a gentle smile.
“I look good there.” Clementine smiled cheekily, glancing at Daniel who shared a small grin. They all looked back to the book as Penelope turned the page, seeing pictures of their first apartment and then Florence’s baby shower for Penelope, followed by a picture of Florence in the hospital with tiny newborn Penelope in her arms and toddler Clementine tucked up beside them.
“Look at those best friends.” Florence smiled sweetly.
Lunch was momentarily forgotten about as the family looked through the photo album together. Daniel and Florence had already seen it since Lucy completed the assignment at home and brought home the shining grade right away, but they liked watching the older two girls see the pictures together. Next came Daniel’s family in Vancouver and then the engagement followed by a few pictures of the wedding. Then was Lucy’s birth announcement and her gender reveal party followed by her birth with a sweet picture of the five of them all together. The rest was filled with fun memories from the past years, some of them all together and a few individual shots, including Clementine’s father/daughter dance when she was nine.
“This is so pretty, Lu-Lu.” Penelope breathed, brushing her fingers over a picture of the three girls at her prom from the year before.
“You guys can keep it until you come home for winter break! So you don’t forget what we look like.” Lucy offered.
“Thank you.” Penelope chuckled, passing it across the table to Clementine to get a better look at.
The eldest smiled down at the first page with the picture of Florence and Daniel outside the university dorms in their winter jackets, arms around each other while they huddled close with sweet smiles as they leaned their heads leaning together. Their gloved hands were resting on Florence’s stomach that you could barely see protruding from under her fluffy coat and Clementine smiled down at the picture, tapping her finger gently over the spot where she was.
