Hi! I was wondering if there is a set date for the pre-0rder period on the Magolor shaker charms?
I plan on ordering the charms from my manufacturer around early May, but the pre-order price will be set until I have them in stock in June! I can't say for sure the exact date in June but it will be somewhere between the 5th and 16th depending on how long manufacturing and shipping takes.
Once I ship out the first batch they will no longer be discounted. This will be a regularly stocked item in my shop though and I plan on ordering more than just who pre-ordered them. So, if you're interested but don't have an opportunity to get one now, there will be many more opportunities later.
I hope this answers your question, feel free to ask me for any other details!

pairing: florist!renjun x reader
genre: fluff
word count: 1.6k
for the nostalgic melodies event hosted by @knet-bakery
playlist: bloom bloom the boyz, life still goes on nct dream, dive into you nct dream, cherry kisses chungha
a/n: my first fic for an event!! i hope you all enjoy this as much as i enjoyed writing it. also,, go check out everyone else that participated in the event!! oh, i also haven't had the time to proof-read this so, sorry lmao.
Tumblr media
summary: flowers held many different meanings, and renjun loved that. from giving someone a baby's breath to giving them peonies, he loved how up front the message was, yet how hidden it was to someone that didn't understand their true meanings. You had always adored flowers, the colours, the scents, the meanings. And so, every week, you would go into Floral Dreams, to buy new flowers to draw, however Renjun would always throw in additional flowers to express his ever-growing crush on you, unbeknownst to him you understood every word.
Tumblr media
If you had told Renjun this time last year he would be working part time as a florist, he would've simply laughed. But yet here he is, adorning a black apron, rearranging the plants in the display cabinet.
Floral Dreams was a great place for Renjun. It was never too busy, it was a five minute walk to his apartment and, thanks to Donghyuck, he has learned far more about flowers in the past month than he has learned about art history at his uni classes. He would never admit it to him, but Renjun was intrigued by the meanings each flower held.
From the bluebell to the yellow carnation, every flower held a different meaning. At first, Renjun couldn't care less. They were just flowers after all, their only job to him was to sit and look pretty. However the longer he spent in the floristry, the more his curiosity and his passion grew.
And now here he was, currently wiping down the counter he had just used to arrange a bouquet for somebody's birthday.
As he returned behind the till, the soft chime of the shop door bell rang. He glanced over and locked eyes with you. You seemed to be a regular. always popping in on a Wednesday afternoon, no matter the weather, to buy different pre-made bouquets. At first, Renjun found it odd how you would only buy one particular colour palette of flowers or even just a singular flower, however as you came in more often than not with a camera bag over your shoulder along with a sketchbook poking out the top of the tote bag you carried, it started becoming clear why you would buy them.
His current theories are that you are an artist that just really liked to paint flowers (specifically pink and yellow varieties) or you're a plant mum that just has an apartment filled to the brim with colourful flowers and plants.
His first hunch was correct.
A few months ago, you had moved into Neo City in order to attend the local university and study fine art. It was an interesting place for sure. It was a quaint town yet there was always something going on, whether it be different celebrations for certain holidays or events, to small annual carnivals and parades that would happen.
During your first week of moving in, you had explored the town centre, natural curiosity getting the better of you. That was when you stumbled upon Floral Dreams. The forest green painting on the window frames along with several broad leafed plants sat outside the shop, charmed you.
You remember when you first met Renjun. It was a rainy Wednesday about a month after you had moved. Your classes had just finished and you decided to buy a small bouquet. Something to brighten your dreary dorm room. And so you headed to Floral Dreams. When you stepped into the shop, instead of the cheery greeting you would usually get from Donghyuck, you found that he was busy talking to another guy, Renjun.
Both boys had briefly glanced towards the door, with Donghyuck giving a small wave, whilst the other boy shot you a smile. He was cute.
Returning the wave with your own, you continued into the shop, looking at all the flowers, taking in their colours and scents. Five minutes had gone by and you had chosen all the flowers you had wanted and walked up to the counter to place your order.
You rang the small bell placed on the countertop and after a few seconds, the new guy from earlier emerged from the back room and properly greeted and introduced himself, Renjun.
To say he was pretty was an understatement. He had a soft smile, kind eyes and long hair which made him look ethereal. His voice was melodic. So melodic that you only snapped back to reality halfway through his sentence.
You purchased the flowers and had another look around the empty shop, this time to admire the blossoming flowers. Back at the counter, Renjun would glance at you, whilst he wrapped the bouquet, his mind thinking about your smile and vibe whilst his hands carefully wrapped the bouquet up.
When he was finished, he rang the desk bell to catch your attention. He handed you the flowers and you were on your way. Not before turning back to Renjun and shooting him one last smile with a cheerful goodbye.
From the moment you walked in, Renjun knew his heart had exploded and his slightly dull world would never be the same again.
Week after week you would come back to the shop. It was always at 4pm and it was always an hour into Renjun's shift. You guys had managed to acquaint yourselves and make small talk, with the weather and how both of you had been, being the usual topic of choice.
Today Renjun was determined to make a move. Whether it was changing the topic to be something more in depth, or giving his number to you, he was definitely going to do something. And so when you walked up to the counter to place your order, Renjun made his move. He asked the question that had been on his mind. Why in the heavens did you buy so many flowers? The laughter that followed made Renjun's heart flutter, it was beautiful.
You then proceeded to explain the reason you moved and why almost all the store's sales were from you. Upon hearing that you went to the same university he did, Renjun was enthralled and began talking about his passion for art and the history behind famous pieces.
Much to his dismay, his hands had a mind of their own, and had wrapped up your selected bouquet far too quickly for his liking. Just as you were about to grab the bouquet, Renjun let out a 'wait!' which made you pause.
He ran into the back room and came out a moment later with some ribbon along with a couple of gardenias and blue salvias. 'It'll make the bouquet look amazing, trust me' he said with that smile you had fallen for.
Once he was done, you took the flowers, bid him adieu and left, ready to take photographs of this masterpiece.
As soon as you left, Renjun let out a sigh of content and his heart started to calm down. He had a crazy idea to use what he had learned from Donghyuck, and to confess to you in the form of flowers.
It was a bold move, one that made him feel happy with himself.
Over the next couple of months the same routine would occur. You arrived, picked out flowers, ordered the bouquet, Renjun would wrap them up, you would take them, then leave.
However, as time went on, you began noticing flowers that you hadn't picked out.
For example, you had ordered a bouquet with mainly red flowers, with a couple of white ones to make it more visually appealing, however you don't really remember picking up the white camellia. Or that time you noticed a couple of yellow jasmines mixed with your sunflowers.
You eventually thought of looking up what these flowers meant. You knew one of your old high school flowers loved gardening and would often talk about flower meanings, but you had never paid any mind to them. Oh how you wish you had.
And so that's how you spent the evening on different websites looking at different meanings for all the flowers you could remember buying, and the definitions.
The morning after, you had a brilliant idea.
That next week, you came in at the usual time with a list on your phone of all the flowers you had never actually bought. You suspected that a certain someone kept slipping different flowers into your bouquet, which was actually quite sweet to you, however you were going to surprise him.
You picked out various flowers that were composed for a yellow, blue and white theme. You included the yellow jasmines and gardenias, along with the white camellias and blue salvias. Additional flowers were added and made a stunning bouquet, the best you had imagined yet.
For how quiet the shop was, your heart was thumping a lot louder than usual, despite this you walked to the till with a small smile. The normal routine went on, Renjun making conversation with you. The topic for today was conspiracies and aliens, which would usually be quite interesting to you, but your mind was in a different place.
Just as Renjun was tying the last ribbon up, a 'wait!' escaped your lips. A slightly startled Renjun paused to look at you. Dashing away to the front of the store, you picked out a red rose and walked back to where he was waiting.
Much to his surprise, you added the rose to the centre of the bouquet, pushed the bouquet towards him and then pulled out a letter that had been in your coat pocket and pushed it across the counter in his direction.
He froze. Almost everyone knew what a red rose meant.
He opened the letter. All the flowers he had given you with their meanings were listed, along with the red rose.
I love you.
Underneath was a small paragraph. His already racing heart began to explode as he read the words 'let's go on a date tomorrow' followed with your number underneath.
He looked back up to you. You were currently looking everywhere and anywhere that wasn’t Renjun.
Placing the letter down, he came around from behind the desk and hugged you. He could feel you tense up under him, however in a matter of seconds, your arms were around him, and a sigh of relief escaped your lips.
From the moment he met you, his heart had exploded, the colours in his world seemed to be brighter whenever you were there.
He loved hearing your laugh, seeing your smile, being in your presence.
Time felt non-existent with you.
He loved you, as much as you loved him.
And that was all he needed.

Where to Get Witchy Supplies (part 1)
Hey guys! So this post is going to be another masterpost type with some info added. This is just a guide on where I get my witchcraft and wicca supplies on a budget! I know practicing in college or high school can be difficult when it feels like you have to have the BEST and PRETTIEST tools, supplies, etc, but it doesn’t have to be that way! This post is the first part to a two (maybe three) part series, and I will be posting the next part tomorrow!
So before we get into this list, I want to say that being a witch/wiccan/pagan or whatever you identify as does not mean you have to have the prettiest supplies. Really, the only thing that matters is if your tools function and that you connect with them! I also want to mention that some of these items are going to be on the ‘splurge’ side, but the majority are pretty cheap so you can save up for those pricier items! Let’s get into it babes!
Herbs
A big way to save on herbs is to avoid your grocery store most of the time. Of course you can compare prices between the sites I list below (which I tend to do for anything I buy so I can get the best deal!) These are a few of my favorite online places to buy herbs!
✴ Magical Omaha: this site has a TON of different supplies that you can buy online. My favorite section happens to be their herbs section. They also have bee pollen and beeswax beads in this section! They sell their herbs by the ounce, and every order I have placed has been perfect. They have $5 flat rate shipping that I believe is for all across America!
✴ 13 Moons: this site is a little pricier than Magical Omaha, and I am not too sure on their shipping (I believe it was around 5 dollars for me!) but they have a few more options than Magical Omaha. They have resins, more root options, and a few more herbs than Magical Omaha that I could see from browsing. They also have herbal sets and bundles, which Magical Omaha does not have.
✴ Mountain Rose Herbs: I am pretty sure this site is more catered towards alternative medicine or wellness. However, I have heard good things about the quality of their products, so I am adding it to the list!
Incense / Cleansing
So I do not have a lot of experience with buying incense as my apartment complex does not allow it, but I did a bit of research to find a couple cheap options for you guys!
✴ five below: This is a newer store (at least where I’m from) and while they are more of a bargain store, they do have a few options for incense and essential oils! One of the best deals I saw on their site was 20 incense sticks for 2 dollars! Definitely perfect for the witch on a budget. They also have free shipping on orders over 35 dollars!
✴ Incense Warehouse: This site has ENDLESS options for incense, sage, smudge sticks, really anything you can burn! If you can think it, you can find it!
Crystals
I personally rarely buy my crystals online (and when I do, I tend to go to Etsy), but there are a lot of options to do so! I will link a few below! However, for the most cost efficient way to buy crystals, I would definitely research any metaphysical stores in your area. That way, you will be able to make sure your crystals are in perfect shape and you are able to be sure you will connect with them. Also, always cleanse your crystals after you receive/buy them. You don’t know whose energy has been absorbed by them!
✴ Bliss Crystals: this Etsy is chalk full of crystals of all shapes and sizes! The prices are also extremely reasonable compared to many different stores I have browsed. Also, you receive free shipping on orders $35 and up!
✴ CrystalsnCreations: Elica has a wide variety of crystal kits and decorations! She also has a few ‘mystery’ kits where she intuitively chooses your crystals for you! You can also create your own crystal set. Her pricing is also very good, and I am pretty sure every order comes with free shipping!
✴ The Spirit Nectar (Canada): this shop has SO many crystals to choose from! They are organized by size and shape for ease. They also sell home decorations and some pretty cool artwork as well! There are quite a few items with free shipping to the US, and I’m pretty sure to Canada (I may be mistaken on the Canada bit).
✴ Your Crystal Shop: another shop with so many options. They mainly specialize in jewelry/pendants, but around 1000 items are currently under their sale section!
✴ Mandala Gems: I have only heard good things about this shop, and looking at their website just gives me a good feeling! SO MANY BIG CRYSTALS! They also have a clearance crystal section and a sale section!
Athames and Bolines
So for a witch on a budget, I honestly think that these are the hardest things to come by. An athame is a ritual knife that generally has a dark handle, is traditionally double sided (check your local knife laws!) and is not used for literal cutting (just ‘cutting’ energy or directing it). A boline is another ritual knife, but it is used for cutting or carving different things at your altar. It traditionally has a lighter handle, and can be a crescent moon blade, a small scythe, or even a pair of scissors! Something to always remember is if something does its job and you use it in your practice, then it is a proper tool!
There are so many options on Etsy for athames, and I have even run into a few interesting knives that could work as athames at vintage stores and art stores! You could even use a letter opener. Here are a few affordable options for athames!
✴ Botanical Resin Athame
✴ Hecate Athame
✴ Pewter Celestial Athame
✴ Adder Athame
✴ Personalized Leaf Letter Opener
✴ These Gorgeous Letter Openers
Etsy (can you tell I LOVE ETSY for all things witchy??) also has a great selection for Bolines! I personally use scissors or a carving knife as my boline, depending on what needs to be cut, but I’ll list some “traditional” bolines for you!
✴ Reaver Boline
✴ Moon Crescent Boline
✴ Druid Boline
✴ These Bolines and Athames from allwicca.com
Wands
Your wand is one of your most powerful tools. It helps you direct energy and focus your intentions in any ritual or spell. While you can buy a wand that you feel drawn to, I personally love making my own! I have made two in the past. So for this little list, I will be linking a few pre-made wand options, and a few tutorials on how to make your own wand! The lovely part about making your own wand is it is super cost effective and really, you probably only need to buy 1 or two things (a small crystal you would like to use and any carving tools you need). In the future, I will probably make a tutorial on how I make my wands!
Make your own wand!
✴ Tutorial 1
✴ My Tutorial! (will link when posted)
A few beautiful wands I found
✴ Handmade Maple Walnut Wand
✴ Quartz and Wood Wand (look through her Etsy for more!)
✴ Rough Selenite Wand (you can use completely crystal wands as well)
So babes, that’s about all for this part of the supply shopping post! In the next post, I will be adding more altar tools and possibly a few divination tools! If the divination tools do not fit into the next post, then I will be doing a third post about them!
Thank you so much for reading! If you have any questions, my ask is always open!

twelve Things You Should Consider When Acquiring Your First Condo
1) Analysis the Builder:
Not all building contractors are alike. Many create high quality condos and have some sort of track record of success, while others slice corners and build substandard condos. Aside from reviewing the general contractors webpage, one should also carry out an internet search for watchdog studies, lawsuits and discussion boards to get proposed and existing accommodations. One thing to look out with regard to is whether the builder who is project you are interested in, has a background for completing their assignments on time. I had a client who have purchased with a builder (who shall remain nameless in this particular article) that habitually forced back completion dates. Our client was promised typically the keys a little under 36 months after purchasing the unit, plus the builder delayed possession thrice from their original projected conclusion date. After many irritating delays, he final acquired the keys a whole a couple of and a half years after the authentic scheduled completion date. This specific tied his deposit funds up for an a total regarding 5. 5 years. It was almost considered like a 2 . 5 12 months interest free loan on the builder! In retrospect, as a possible investor, he would have loved to invest in another project from 15% deposit, then take other 10% and rescued another 5%, and put that money into one more project, returning him probably double the return, including 2 . 5 less yrs. This is why it pays to research often the builder!
2) Choose the form of condo that meets yourself:
Not all condos are likewise. Some have age constraints, and rules about animals. Other condos are more loved ones friendly in terms of the unit measurements and amenities. Still other folks cater to retiree's. A good way to decide this is have a look at the number of bachelor's, one, two and a few bedroom units in the complete building. You may also contact the house manager for the condominium to be able to verify whether it is a lifestyle condo catering to a certain demographic. People fewer two and several bedroom units will likely not appeal to large families. juniper hill
3) Identify financial status:
If you are a newbies buyer, getting pre-approved to get a mortgage is a must. Contact your loan company to determine your buying ability, and get a firm commitment page from them locking in the level, and approval amount. No-one wants to be left around the closing day without a mortgage loan approval after you already produced the purchase. I have acquired countless past clients that have been given what they thought has been an approval from their bank, exactly where in fact it was nothing more than a new verbal agreement. Some people have gotten credit issues in the past which could warrant a more difficult endorsement process, and possibly at a increased rate. It is always better to understand that you received a formal pre-approval before you fall in love with a home you can not afford.
4) Talk with local real estate agent:
Real estate agent's can give you statistics of which condominiums are appreciating well in Mississauga as well as the most popular unit sorts, and floor plans. This will likely help you to make a direct assessment between different condo properties in order to establish the true associated with the unit you are interested in. Don't merely settle for any real estate agent. Once more, not all real estate agents are the same. Make an effort to work with a local expert that are experts in the type of properties that curiosity you. After all, why can you work with a realtor that markets mainly full sized residences in the suburbs, when you are seeking purchase a condo in the metropolis? It is like going to the dental office for your flu!
Tumblr media
5. Carry out your own research:
If you plan to get a home without a real estate agent, you ought to look into the sales of the adjacent area yourself. Again, these kinds of resources will be less obtainable to the general public, but you could have access to the asking rates of similar properties. That does not mean that those prices will be the market values for that certain property, or even necessarily whatever they sell for. Be careful while information gathering. I have experienced a number of past clients reward me after their hunt for educating them on location values, and explaining to these what to look for when they are searching. Why don't get the assistance of a regional expert, when they're providers are free?
6. Find out modification capability:
Although freehold qualities allow the owner to carry out restorations without anyone's consent, condo properties have restrictions on what may be altered for each unit. A standard rule of thumb should be to request composed permission from the property supervision before making any renovations. The house managers consent is always needed to various degrees depending on the residence. Usually renovation work that requires removing a wall or maybe upgrading bathtubs and baths will have limitations on what can easily, and cannot be done. Several require that a detailed reconstruction plan be submitted into the condo board for agreement prior to the renovation taking place. It will always be better to be proactive. An individual wouldn't want to reverse the actual reno back once it is completed! I had a client who all removed all the carpet inside their unit, to replace with wooden. She did this to boost the value of their unit before selling it, only to learn that management had to agree to any floor renovations. The lady tried to then sell the system thinking that hardwood wood raise the value of her unit. That did increase the value of your ex unit, but in failing to utilize and receive consent from your property manager, she was could possibly be renovation restrictions in the developing. It was later found that will she did not use the appropriate sound-proofing underpad beneath the hard wood. The condo corporation regarded that this would hinder the particular enjoyment of the unit owner immediately below hers because of sound. Consequently, she had to split out the hardwood, install fresh underpad, and then replace the wood. This ate into just about all her profit, and your girlfriend investment, and time was certainly not rewarded. The moral in the story is to always check into these renovations with the rental property manager before you begin. It could save you lots of money!
7) Ask for a disclosure statement:
The developer as well as builder of a new terme conseillé is required to have an information report giving details of the building, along with the legal terms under that this condominium will operate. The particular booklet is available immediately after typically the Agreement of Purchase along with Sale is signed. With resale units, this "Condo By Laws and Declarations" booklet is always made available through the 10 day conditional interval when you purchase a unit. It is placed on the status certificate that may be forwarded to your lawyer regarding review. Your lawyer and then has 2 business days and nights to review the certificate, in addition to consult the purchaser together with his/her findings. If almost everything checks out, the buyer may progress with the purchase. If there are usually red flags in the documents, often the purchaser always reserves it is your right walk away within the conditional time.
8. Ask for a site program:
It is important to know if the model that you want to purchase is in the 1st, second or third period of development so that you understand any future construction which could block your existing look at. Of equal significance will be knowing when, and everywhere more development may take place around this building. New improvement adjacent to the building will influence the use and enjoyment of your house due to noise, vibration, unpleasant construction, dust and nasty smells. It is also good practice to master where your unit will be inside proximity to the elevator, rubbish disposal room, and services, as units near these components usually have a stigma installed on them in the resale industry. Besides, who would want to scent the garbage room after a very long day at work.
9) Establish development plans for the associated with area:
Many condos can be purchased under the premise of a very clear view to the Lake, scenery, or green-space. To ensure that the lovely view will be maintained in the long term, an easy trip to the Planning Department will let you ask if any other innovations are planned nearby, and have a look at the architectural pictures. The planners should be able to assist you to understand the types of developments which can be proposed around you. I have got many calls from people that bought privately through the creator units with south landscapes of the lake as an investment property. These investors would hold the unit until they obtain the keys, and the building subscribes as a condominium corporation. At this time, they would try to resell it, only to be shocked which a new condominium just commenced construction in front of they're system, obstructing their perfect to the south view. The investors blunder was being too excited during the buy process, without taking a take a step back and asking the right concerns up front.
10) Review service details:
If the developer provides a swimming pool, it is important to really know what size and whether it is inside or outdoor. The same is true of party rooms, exercise locations, gyms, sports fields, doctor offices and lockers. Find out how huge, how many, and where will have them located.
Again, these 12 considerations can affect both your entertainment, and the resale value of your current condo. It is always better to research before you buy upfront, and then enjoy the returns of your hard work once you have shifted in!

Barnes and Nobles Bookstore Report 2020 on Diversity
For those who are new to this... What I do every year since I was 13 was go to the bookstore, usually in summer and take an overview look at what is being shelved and sold. This, of course, changed with the internet. It’s a way for me (and maybe you) to get a sense of what the industry is and isn’t doing, particularly with diversity. I also check local bookstores (But my local one is closed due to covid this year). I usually note what has an hasn’t changed. It’s something that authors should be doing anyway. I don’t do it more often because it’s usually depressing. And I don’t do it near holiday seasons, since that can skew the book selection unfairly. So I usually pick a non holiday-heavy month and one that will not skew my numbers (like say, February, which is Black History Month) I pay attention to the following: - Where the books are shelved. - How many times a book is shelved (in different areas) - Who gets the most real estate and a rough guess as to why. (Usually because they are white cis and male.... no lie) - Which diversity gets the most real estate - What are the labels on the shelves and if those are separate or different from previous years. - I generally skip the children’s section since there is a yearly report for that. - Demographics of the area visually apparent v. numbers of the area itself. Who are they supposed to sell to (and usually failing to sell to) Blame the Anthropology... I’m well-trained to look for such things. - All Bookends and displays. - I usually look at all sections of the bookstore and take notes, in order. - If I have access to internet, then I also look up the authors, if I can to find out their diversity and spread. - I also take lots of pictures.
These are my notes for this year.
Demographics of the area outside of the bookstore: About 50/50 with the majority being Latinx (Black and Latinx mainly) Mostly women. (It was early, though--maybe white) Last demographics of area 2010, granted 36,226 (71.1%) White, 2,573 (1.3%) Black, 531 (0.3%) Native American, 31,434 (16.4%) Asian (6.9% Filipino, 5.4% Korean, 1.3% Chinese), 122 (0.1%) Pacific Islander, 12,146 (6.3%) from other races, and 8,687 (4.5%)  (Latinx is around 17%)
The first two bookcases at the front of the store, were mostly white cis male authors. In the new author case, this was true, as well, and mostly had well-knowns.
Tumblr media
Considering the Latinx population, I’m always kinda feeling like why aren’t there more Latinx books on the shelves?
White and black authors. But the black authors are only there because of Black Lives Matter, which feels like it’s catering to the white people who want to know what this is about, rather than the demographics of the bookstore itself. The Magazine section, Vogue, in particular did have PoCs on it.
- The Art History Section is and always is really white. I could count the PoCs on the shelf of 6 tall shelves on one hand. All of the How to draw Manga books are by white people. I know this because I’ve looked up the authors in the past. And it’s not that Japanese don’t publish books in English with instructions, BTW... so I always find that a bit strange, especially since the author they choose doesn’t really have a manga style 100% but mixes in American Comic books. (But that’s a separate thing.) They mostly had known PoC artists, acceptable to white people. - The Cookbooks don’t cover Africa. They had one African American cookbook which interested me. (Labeled Soul food and had a Black author), but the books mostly were for “French” in the international section. A few Korean (2-3) and I didn’t spot many other regionalities. I looked for Indian, for example.
- There were SFF books front of the store, which surprised me. Might be because there were PoC authors and the majority were PoC. (Also Black Lives Matter skewing) - All of the seating was removed (probably because of covid) I usually use it to sort through books I want...
- No Surprise, the same location for featured “classics” as last year and all but one were written by white men. The token book? Arabian Nights. I’m not sure that really counts since it was compiled by a white guy. (Believe me, I had thought like where is Jorge Borges? Marquez? etc) Most of the authors were white cis and het too... - The recommended section... by looking, mostly white cis het men. - Danielle Steele was shelved in General Fiction section. Actually several genres were shelved together there. Some Science Fiction, Some Fantasy, Some Romance, Some Historical Fiction, etc. There was no special section for Historical Fiction. (Not popular? Used to be back in the day...) There’s no LGBTQIA, women’s or African American section, even in the non-fiction. I have mixed feelings about taking it out of the non-fiction section. I like it combined in the Fiction section. They also took out all of the sub labeling except for major transitions. (Labeling individual shelves as containing something) - Diminished Latinx books in the Classics (Shelf) section. This has not changed... and it still ticks me off how white and cis het (also leans towards male) it is. - Increased black authors overall. Octavia Butler was Shelved twice, for example. Toni Morrison got a bookshelf all to herself (probably because of her recent passing). Nnedi Okorafor actually showed up on the shelf. Rena Barron was triple shelved--once at the front of the store and in two sections of the bookstore... So apparently B&N have a lot of faith in her book. - Overall, improved balance between men and women (except in the classics and recommended sections. I feel stabby about that.)
- The covers were a lot less offensive overall. (Though I had a few head scratchers on why that cover for that book, but that’s getting into graphic design quibbles) The PoC books actually had PoCs on the cover. And some of the covers were redone to have PoCs on the cover. There were no sexualized women on the out turned books. The Mystery/Thriller books, for example, has a trend of being symbolic and drawn. Kinda felt like I was staring at the old Chick Lit.
- There were less books shelved overall, because of the shelving practices of out turning the books so people could see the covers. (Even less than last year)
- The Romance Section ticked me off since I could count the amount of PoCs on the cover with one hand. But the covers have improved a bit. Jim Hines won the cover war... There was ONE LGBT book and ONE interracial book. It’s like PoCs don’t fall in love at all. What gives?
- Science Fiction and Fantasy were separated again. The amount of shelves for YA and SFF were about equal. (Which drastically changed from last year). This meant that the genre fiction was mostly equally shelved. (Mystery/Thriller might have gotten a smidgen less). The Science Fiction section was astoundingly male cis het. I even looked for authors I knew who were queer/poc, etc and couldn’t find them. Anne McCaffrey was gone completely, BTW. Oh and JK Rowling didn’t make it to the main shelves (She was in the audiobook section). lol Someone was mad. So win one, lose the rest.
- All of the “recommended race” books were written by People of color and well known. Win~ But all on black-white relations except one. (A book on my wishlist, but I pre-promised myself to not buy anything... so it was difficult to leave that one behind...) - The people with the most shelving were Shakespeare (Got his own section), Stephen King, and I forgot the third author, but he’s male cis and het too... Yeah... I know. And yes, there are authors more prolific than these authors too in history who are also PoC. - All of the books were from known and popular authors rather than unknown authors, mainly. Not like that rare find where you’re browsing and you go, “OMG, never heard of this person before.” So for me, who likes to browse and find that rare find it’s not as fun. I’ve found books pre-internet that were like that in Barnes and Nobles no less.
Overall: Improved, but I have this irking feeling the increase in black books is specifically to the Black Lives Matter movement. They care more about publicity than the cause, otherwise, other PoC groups wold have gotten better rep. Also kinda sad at the lack of LGBT. The widest diversity in the store is still YA. And as every year, I’m super sad about the lack of rep for Latinx. Seriously, didn’t you give it a thought that you might be in an area that’s not white? (I know the “But you could complain” thing... but it never worked in the past either and I have written to corporate, just so you know.) I pretty much left with this feeling of elation that it was improved, but this feeling of sickness that they were still, STILL catering to white people. (Cis het, etc). Yeah, depressing enough to want to marathon several PoC shows to undo the implicit bias type of feeling. And this area, as shown isn’t lacking in PoCs. Also, kinda have to state, I wish it was more like a treasure hunt... sometimes that’s the best part of going to a bookstore. Disappointed about the lack of a non-fiction LGBTQIA... kinda had a wish the Julie Sondra Decker might show up in that section. My ace little heart. I took 108 pictures as photo proof of my assertions (Again, Anthro training). BTW, Rena Barron should thank her publicist for convincing for the triple shelving...

Contest Entry #2
Paring: Bakguo x Reader(gender neutral)
Genera: Fluff
Summary: Reader is exhausted after running for student body president(and winning) but despite that they take Katsuki out to a comic shop that’s just released new All Might merch as a way of thanking him for his help.
Tumblr media
The last few months had been brutal and not because of hero training-well, not entirely because of hero training.  Sometime ago you’d decided to run for student body president, wanting not only to represent your class but the rest of the students in your year.  Despite being a part of the famous 1-A class you were also connected with other first year students from other sections as well. You’d won but to be honest if you’d known how much extra time, effort, and emotional break downs running was going to have costed you may not have ran in the first place.
Failing to stop a yawn you pulled your phone from your pocket and reread the text from Katsuki. He had to stay late and clean the classroom after starting a fight with Izuku half way through class but you didn’t expect him to take this long.  Well at the very least the comic store was open until ten so even if the two of you had to go out later it’s not like the surprise would be ruined.  It’d taken a bit of extra planning on your part but considering how much Katsuki helped you through the election it really only seemed fair.
‘Maybe I should call the store just to make sure they hold it?’
No, there was nothing to worry about.  You’d pre purchased everything months ago so even if they did run out of the newer All Might merch on the shelves everything you ordered would be safely stored away in the back-and if not you’d probably implode or something.  Kind of an ironic response considering your boyfriends explosive quirk and personality.  Having somewhat reassured yourself you shut your eyes and shoved your phone back in your pocket.
Despite how rowdy class was earlier it seemed like today was the first peaceful day you’d had in months. Truthfully you would’ve been happy to just crawl back to your bed and sleep after class but you knew Katsuki was interested in everything being released today and you really did owe him after everything he did to help you with getting elected as student body president-which mainly consisted of him having to stop threatening to kill people for a few months as well as help you with speeches.
“Hey!”
Eyes snapping open you smiled as your eyes landed on Katsuki.  Although his face was contorted into a snarl of some type-probably directed at somebody he passed in the hallway who just happened to say something to set him off you were glad to see him.
“You took long.” You greeted, doing your best to keep your voice light and hide how tired you actually were.   While he may not seem the type to others he was one to worry and if he had any indication of how tired you actually were he’d probably cancel your outing and demand the two of you just hang out at the dorms so you could rest; and while that option was more preferable to you it probably wasn’t something he actually wanted to do, especially considering how many outings he’d opted out of just so he could help you make posters or take polls. No, the two of you were going to that damned comic book store and Katsuki was getting a bundle of brand spanking new All Might merch and nothing-not even Katsuki was going to stop that from happening.
“What about it?” He snapped before more quietly adding, “Fucking Aizawa kept saying the room wasn’t clean enough.”
“Well at least you’re done now.” You smiled and hooked your arm with his own, “Alright, let’s go!” Ignoring his protest you dragged him away from the school and towards the bus stop. Any other day the two of you would’ve walked there but you didn’t have the energy to do so, at least because it was a little later than usual the fact you wanted to take the bus to begin with probably wasn’t too strange-or if it was Katsuki decided not to say anything.
The bus ride went by quickly, you listened to Katsuki rant about his punishment which took up a majority of the ride. Actually you could see the rest of the passengers-particularly parents who had kids sitting beside them or on their lap-relax when the two of stood to get off at your stop.
“Man that took forever.” Stretching his arms above his head Katsuki groaned as his shoulder let out a satisfying pop, “Should’ve just walked.”
“You know it would’ve taken longer if we walked..right?”
“Yeah but we wouldn’t have gotten all those looks.” He grumbled as he pushed forward and opened the door to the comic shop.
‘You’re the reason we got all those looks.’ You kept that to yourself though.
The second the two of you entered the shop Katsuki left your side to go check out what was left of the newly released items-which, wasn’t much.  Yawning and running a hand down your face you let Katsuki browse and made your way over to the counter where a worker was idly fiddling with a small figurine.
As you reached the counter you could feel another wave of exhaustion hit you.  The worker didn’t’ seem to notice as they asked you something you couldn’t completely register at the moment.  Shutting your eyes tightly you shook your head before opening them again.  You were definitely wrong earlier when you assumed you had more energy because at the moment even your legs felt wobbly.
“Uh, are you okay?”
“Sorry, uh yeah.” Giving them a somewhat sheepish smile you continued, “What’d you say earlier?”
“I asked how I can help you.” They said, “Hey do you need a chair or something you look like you’re about to pass out.”
Shaking your head you reassured them you were fine before pulling out your ID and a printed receipt, “I pre ordered some things a few months back and was wondering if I could pick them up today?”
After a seconds hesitation the worker took the receipt and ID from you and looked them over for a minute before nodding, “Good thing you pre ordered the hoodie, we sold out of them like half an hour after opening.  I’ll go grab the order from the back one second.”
Nodding and thanking them you waited until they were out of sight before leaning over onto the counter and taking a deep breath.  You were thankful that your boyfriend was not only such a nerd but that this wave of exhaustion had waited to hit you until now.  Shutting your eyes you continued taking deep breaths all the while trying to convince yourself this was some sort of a powernap.  Really you just needed to hold out until the two of you got back to the dorms.  After this you’d be done with pretty much everything for today-homework would have to wait until tomorrow not that you cared much about that right now.  Yeah, it didn’t matter that it’d probably only be seven by the time you got back to the dorms you were going straight to bed. Just the thought of going to bed almost made you groan.
Just a few more hours.
Just a few more hours.
“Hey, wake up already!”
Eyes popping open you couldn’t stop yourself from panicking at the sudden change in surroundings though Katsuki’s grip around your midsection kept you from jumping away from him.  As you calm he readjusted the two of you and as you started registering your surroundings once again he released his hold of you, though he kept a hand on your shoulder-not that you entirely understood why or what was happening.
“Kats-“
“Idiot!” He snapped, “If you were this damned tired you should’ve told me and we would’ve just stayed at the dorms!”
“Um, a-are you okay?” The worker asked glancing between the two of you.  They recognized both your faces now from the UA sports festival however they had no idea what to do in a situation like this, “You’re not going to die or anything right?”
“I’m fine.”  You reassured them, though much like before they had a dubious look on their face, even more so now, “I uh, just don’t really understand what’s happening.”
“You passed out idiot.”
“I-wait really?!”
“Why the fuck would I like about something like that!” He snapped, “If I hadn’t been walking back over to you-you would’ve hit your head or something when you fell!”
“I didn’t mean to!”
“Yeah but you must’ve known you were this tired so why the hell did you insist on us going out?!”
Despite his the extra harsh tone to his yelling you knew he was concerned, the look on his face made it obvious but Katuski had never been good at expression emotions quietly or subtly so instead he yelled.
“Uh..so..your stuff.” The worker awkwardly said after a few more minutes of Katsuki shouting at you for not taking care of yourself.
“Stuff?” Katsuki all but sneered.
“Y-Yeah, uh, the hoodie, socks…and…bracelet..” The seemed to shrink under his gaze.  Tugging his shirt to get his attention off the already frazzled employee you shot him a look which he merely scoffed at.
“Yeah.” Looking at the employee you gave them a smile, “Did you manage to find everything?”
“Yeah..it’s all right here and good to go.”
“Wait, that’s why we came today?” He asked, “Wait, how’d you even get this stuff it’s all sold out on the counters?”
“I ordered it a few months ago when they were still letting people preorder.” You said, “You were helping me so much with running for student president and I wanted to thank you and I know how much you wanted this stuff and it was released today so I didn’t want you to have to wait or for you to come out on your own or with others and buy it and then have two of everything so-“
“You’re an idiot.”
“Huh?”
“I said you’re an idiot.” He repeated before grabbing the bag of merchandise, “My idiot but a huge fucking idiot.”
The hint of a smile on his face made it a lot easier to ignore his name calling, plus right now it’s not like you could completely disagree.
“Let’s go the next bus is going to be here soon and I don’t need you passing out on me again.” He didn’t actually wait for a response before hooking his arm with your own and leading the two of you out of the store and over to the bus stop, all while muttering about how reckless you were on the way over.  Even after the two of you got on the bus and found your seats he was still going.
“Sorry.” You said once he finished with his lecturing.
Scoffing he muttered out an annoyed whatever and crossed his arms over his chest, “..Thanks for the stuff.”
You couldn’t help but smile. Inching yourself closer to Katsuki you laid your head on his shoulder and made yourself as comfortable as you could.
Katsuki kept still as you leaned against him.  While he was still irritated by how reckless you were by not just speaking up he wasn’t going to keep you up the whole ride back-that and he was pretty sure even if you did sleep now you’d still be able to once the two of you got back to the dorms. Sighing he glanced down at the bag that was settled by his feet.  He hadn’t checked to see what was in it yet but from what little he could see it was a few different items-all probably things he’d expressed some interest in.
Turning his attention back to you he lightly kissed your forehead before resting his head against yours. He’d have to figure out how to get you off the bus without waking you.

twelve Things You Should Consider When Obtaining Your First Condo
1) Exploration the Builder:
Not all building contractors are alike. Many make high quality condos and have some sort of track record of success, while others lower corners and build substandard condo rentals. Aside from reviewing the general contractors webpage, one should also complete an internet search for watchdog accounts, lawsuits and discussion boards regarding proposed and existing condo properties. One thing to look out intended for is whether the builder that is project you are interested in, has a qualifications for completing their plans on time. I had a client who have purchased with a builder (who shall remain nameless on this article) that habitually sent back completion dates. My very own client was promised typically the keys a little under some years after purchasing the unit, plus the builder delayed possession 3 x from their original projected end date. After many infuriating delays, he final gotten the keys a whole 3 and a half years after the unique scheduled completion date. That tied his deposit income up for an a total connected with 5. 5 years. Its almost semed like a 2 . 5 calendar year interest free loan on the builder! In retrospect, for investor, he would have preferred to invest in another project on 15% deposit, then do the other 10% and preserved another 5%, and put that money into a different project, returning him likely double the return, as 2 . 5 less several years. This is why it pays to research often the builder!
2) Choose the style of condo that meets your thoughts:
Not all condos are similar. Some have age prohibitions, and rules about household pets. Other condos are more friends and family friendly in terms of the unit shapes and amenities. Still other individuals cater to retiree's. A good way to establish this is have a look at the number of bachelor's, one, two and a few bedroom units in the total building. You may also contact the home or property manager for the condominium to help verify whether it is a lifestyle condo catering to a certain demographic. Individuals fewer two and several bedroom units will likely not draw in large families. juniper hill
3) Identify financial status:
If you are a newbies buyer, getting pre-approved for just a mortgage is a must. Contact your traditional bank to determine your buying capabilities, and get a firm commitment notification from them locking in the charge, and approval amount. Not a soul wants to be left for the closing day without a home finance loan approval after you already manufactured the purchase. I have got countless past clients that had been given what they thought seemed to be an approval from their bank, exactly where in fact it was nothing more than a new verbal agreement. Some people experienced credit issues in the past which might warrant a more difficult endorsement process, and possibly at a bigger rate. It is always better to are aware that you received a formal pre-approval before you fall in love with a home that one could not afford.
4) Always soeak with local real estate agent:
Real estate agent's can give you statistics of which apartments are appreciating well in Mississauga as well as the most popular unit forms, and floor plans. This would help you to make a direct comparability between different condo houses in order to establish the true associated with the unit you are interested in. Don't just simply settle for any real estate agent. All over again, not all real estate agents are the same. Aim to work with a local expert that are experts in the type of properties that desire you. After all, why will you work with a realtor that stocks mainly full sized households in the suburbs, when you are hunting purchase a condo in the urban center? It is like going to the dental practitioner for your flu!
Tumblr media
5. Complete your own research:
If you plan to order a home without a real estate agent, it is best to look into the sales of the adjacent area yourself. Again, these kind of resources will be less acquireable to the general public, but you can have access to the asking selling prices of similar properties. That does not mean that those prices are classified as the market values for that distinct property, or even necessarily these people sell for. Be careful if information gathering. I have possessed a number of past clients cheer me after their try to find educating them on place values, and explaining to these individuals what to look for when they are searching. Obtain get the assistance of a neighborhood expert, when they're expert services are free?
6. Find out creating to order capability:
Although freehold houses allow the owner to carry out makeover without anyone's consent, accommodations have restrictions on what is usually altered for each unit. An overall rule of thumb should be to request prepared permission from the property managing before making any renovations. The home or property managers consent is always instructed to various degrees depending on the residence. Usually renovation work that needs removing a wall or maybe upgrading bathtubs and bath areas will have limitations on what can certainly, and cannot be done. Many require that a detailed remodel plan be submitted into the condo board for agreement prior to the renovation taking place. As well as better to be proactive. You actually wouldn't want to reverse the actual reno back once is probably the best completed! I had a client who all removed all the carpet of their unit, to replace with wood. She did this to raise the value of their unit previous to selling it, only to determine that management had to agree any floor renovations. The woman tried to then sell the system thinking that hardwood wood enhance the value of her unit. The item did increase the value of your ex unit, but in failing to put on and receive consent from property manager, she was could possibly be renovation restrictions in the making. It was later found this she did not use the right sound-proofing underpad beneath the real wood. The condo corporation thought that this would hinder the particular enjoyment of the unit owner specifically below hers because of disturbance. Consequently, she had to dissect out the hardwood, install completely new underpad, and then replace the wooden. This ate into all of her profit, and your girlfriend investment, and time was definitely not rewarded. The moral with the story is to always get these renovations with the rental property manager before you begin. It could save you a large amount!
7) Ask for a disclosure statement:
The developer as well as builder of a new terme conseillé is required to have an information book giving details of the building, along with the legal terms under that your condominium will operate. Often the booklet is available immediately after typically the Agreement of Purchase along with Sale is signed. Sufficient reason for resale units, this "Condo By Laws and Declarations" booklet is always made available over the 10 day conditional interval when you purchase a unit. It is placed on the status certificate that is definitely forwarded to your lawyer to get review. Your lawyer in that case has 2 business time to review the certificate, in addition to consult the purchaser having his/her findings. If anything checks out, the buyer may make progress with the purchase. If there usually are red flags in the documents, often the purchaser always reserves it is your right walk away within the conditional time.
8. Ask for a site approach:
It is important to know if the model that you want to purchase is in the initially, second or third level of development so that you know any future construction that will block your existing perspective. Of equal significance is definitely knowing when, and everywhere more development may arise around this building. New progress adjacent to the building will effects the use and enjoyment of your rental due to noise, vibration, bothersome construction, dust and strong smells. It is also good practice to know where your unit will be with proximity to the elevator, junk disposal room, and features, as units near these components usually have a stigma installed on them in the resale sector. Besides, who would want to fragrance the garbage room after a longer day at work.
9) Establish development plans for the associated with area:
Many condos are purchased under the premise of a apparent view to the Lake, scenery, or green-space. To ensure that your lovely view will be maintained in the long term, an instant trip to the Planning Department will help you ask if any other improvements are planned nearby, in order to have a look at the architectural paintings. The planners should be able to provide help to understand the types of developments that happen to be proposed around you. I have acquired many calls from folks who bought privately through the local building company units with south vistas of the lake as an investment property. These investors would store the unit until they be given the keys, and the building detects as a condominium corporation. At this moment, they would try to resell it, only to be shocked that your new condominium just begun construction in front of they're system, obstructing their perfect sth view. The investors miscalculation was being too excited during the buy process, without taking a take a step back and asking the right issues up front.
10) Review thoughtfulness details:
If the developer databases a swimming pool, it is important to determine what size and whether it is indoors or outdoor. The same is rue party rooms, exercise parts, gyms, sports fields, gyms and lockers. Find out how significant, how many, and where sun's rays located.
Again, these 12 considerations can affect both your fun, and the resale value of your personal condo. It is always better to local plumber upfront, and then enjoy the incentives of your hard work once you have changed in!

The Weekend Warrior Home Edition 7/31/20 – THE SHADOW OF VIOLENCE, SUMMERLAND, THE SECRET: DARE TO DREAM, SHE DIES TOMORROW and More!
As I started to gather what’s left of my wits for this week’s column, there seemed to be fewer movies than usual, and I was quite thankful for that. Then, a few of the movies scheduled for some sort of theatrical release this weekend were delayed and I discovered a bunch of movies I didn’t have in my release calendar to begin with, so this is a little bit of an odd weekend but still one with 8 movies reviews! I went into most of the movies this weekend without much knowledge of what they were about, probably was the best way to go into many of them, since it allowed me to be somewhat open-minded about what I was watching.
Tumblr media
The first surprise of the week is that we’re getting another decent film from the one and only Saban Films, so maybe the VOD distributor has been using the pandemic to step up its game as well.  Directed by first-time feature director Nick Rowland, the Irish crime-drama THE SHADOW OF VIOLENCE (Saban Films), based on the book “Calm with Horses,” stars relative newcomer Cosmo Jarvis as Douglas Armstrong, known as “Arm,” the enforcer for the drug-dealing Devers family. Douglas also has a young toddler with local woman Ursula (Niamh Algar), but when his handler Dympna (Barry Keoghan) orders Arm to kill for the first time, he’s forced to rethink his career.
Much of the story revolves a member of the Devers family caught making a lurid pass at Dympha’s 16-year-old sister, leading to consequences, as Arm is sent to beat the crap out of him. For head of the family, that isn’t nearly enough and soon, Arm is ordered to kill the man. (This aspect of the story reminds me a little of Todd Field’s Little Children, particularly the Jackie Earle Haley subplot.)
As I mentioned above, I watched this film with zero expectations and was taken quite aback by how great it was, despite not having been that big a fan of Keoghan from some of his past work. On the other hand, Cosmo Jarvis, in his first major role, is absolutely outstanding, giving a performance on par with something we might see from Thomas Hardy or Matthias Schoenaerts, at least in their earlier work. Barely saying a word, Jarvis instills so many emotions into “Arm” as we see him playing with his young autistic son, Jack, trying to keep his jealousy over Ursula under control, while also being there when Dympna needs him.  Even as you think you’re watching fairly innocuous day-to-day stuff, Rowland ratchets up the tension to an amazing degree right up until a climactic moment that drives the last act.
Despite the film’s title, The Shadow of Violence isn’t just about violence, as much as it is about a man trying to figure out how to change the trajectory of his life. If you like character-based films like The Rider, this movie is definitely going to be for you. Another surprise is that the movie will be available only in theaters this Friday, rather than the typical VOD approach Saban Films generally takes, so check your local theater if it’s playing near you.
Tumblr media
The faith-based drama THE SECRET: DARE TO DREAM (Lionsgate), starring Katie Holmes and Josh Lucas, is directed by Andy Tennant (Hitch, Sweet Home Alabama) and adapted from Rhonda Byrne’s self-help book, The Secret (which is based on a 2006 movie also called The Secret). Originally planned for a theatrical release, it’s now being released as PVOD, which seems to be the way that so many movies are going now. In it, Holmes plays Miranda Wells, a struggling widow living in New Orleans with three kids who on a stormy night meets a kind stranger (Lucas) who tries to pass on his philosophy of using positive thinking to get whatever you want in life.
Mini-Review: I don’t usually buy into some of the faith-based movies that are released every year, but that’s mainly because I rarely get a chance to see any of them, so why bother?  I was ready to go into The Secret: Dare to Dream with a healthy amount of skepticism, because it seemed to be another movie about grand miracles… but in fact, it’s just a bland movie pimping Rhonda Byrne’s New Thought technique from her New Age-y self help book.
The idea is that positive thinking is all that it takes to get anything you want, something no less than Oprah quickly glommed onto.  While the movie doesn’t hit you over the head with such a message, and “God” is only mentioned once, it also just doesn’t seem to offer much in terms of storytelling to maintain one’s interest.
Katie Holmes does a fine job playing an amiable single mother who meets Josh Lucas’ Bray Johnson as a huge storm is about to hit New Orleans, and he seems like a nice enough fellow as he helps her replace a broken bumper (after she rear-ended him, no less) and then fixing up the house after the storm. But Bray has a secret (hence the title) and it’s in an important envelope that he hesitates to give to Miranda.
The film’s biggest problem is that there never is much in terms of stake when it comes to the drama, because Bray seems to be there to fix everything and make everything better. Miranda’s only other real relation is an awkward one with Jerry O’Connell’s long-time (presumably platonic) friend Tucker, which only gets more awkward when he surprises her by popping the question. She says “Yes” without talking to her own kids first.  The whole time while watching the film, I was expecting some sort of big Nicholas Spark level romance between Miranda and Bray, so when Tucker proposes, it throws a real spanner in the works, but only for a little while.
Incidentally, the “secret” of the title that Bray resists telling Miranda until pressured isn’t particularly groundbreaking either. I won’t ruin it. You’ll just be annoyed when it’s finally revealed.
The Secret: Dare to Dream is as generic and bland a tale you can possibly get, one that really doesn’t accomplish very much and feels more like a Lifetime movie than something particularly revelatory.
Rating: 6/10
Tumblr media
Jessica Swale’s WW2-set SUMMERLAND (IFC Films) stars Gemma Arterton as fantasy author Alice Lamb, quietly living on the South of England in a small beachside town when she’s presented with a young London evacuee named Frank (Lucas Bond) for her to mind while his father’s at war.  Alice lives alone but many years earlier, she had a friendship with a local woman named Vera (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) that turned into something more, despite the taboo of their relationship during those times.
This was another nice surprise, and as I watched the movie, it was hard not to compare it to last week’s Radioactive, since they’re movies intended to appeal to a similar audience. This one seems to be more focused, and Arterton does a better job being likeable despite being as persnickety as Pike’s Marie Currie. Although this isn’t a biopic, it did remind me of films like Goodbye Christopher Robin and Tolkien, and possibly even Finding Neverland. (Incidentally, the Summerland of the title is a mythical place that Alice is writing about, which adds to the fairy tale angle to the film.)
As the film goes along, there’s a pretty major twist, of sorts, and it’s when the stakes in the film start to feel more dramatic as things continue to elevate into the third act. The movie actually opens in 1975 with Penelope Wilton playing the older Alice, although I’m not sure the framing sequence was particularly needed for the film to work the way Swale intended.
Summerland is generally just a nice and pleasant film that stirs the emotions and shows Swale to be a filmmaker on the rise.
Tumblr media
Another really nice indie film that might involve a bit more searching is director Sergio Navaretta’s THE CUBAN (Brainstorm Media), written by Alessandra Piccione. It follows 19-year-old Mina (played by Ana Golja), a Canadian pre-med student who lives with her aunt, Bano (Shohreh Aghdashloo), who pushes her career in medicine, although Mina would rather be a singer. At her part-time job at a long-term care facility, Mina meets Luis (Louis Gossett Jr.), a quiet elderly patient who sits in his wheelchair never talking to anyone until Mina discovers his love for music, and the two bond over that, although Mina’s employers don’t think she’s helping Luis despite his obvious change in nature.
This was just a lovely film driven by Golja, who is just wonderful in the lead role with an equally terrific cast around her, and while it gets a little obvious, I can’t imagine anyone not enjoying this film that harks back to some of the great earlier work by Thomas McCarthy, as it follows a touching story that mixes a number of cultures in a surprisingly fluid way. It turned out to be quite a pleasant and unexpected film in the way it deals with subjects like dementia in such a unique and compelling away, especially if you enjoy Cuban music.
The Cuban already played at a couple Canadian theaters, but it will be available via Virtual Cinema and in some American theaters Friday, and you can find out where at the Official Site.
Tumblr media
I was pretty excited to see Amy Seimetz’s new film, SHE DIES TOMORROW (NEON), since I was quite a fan of her previous film, Sun Don’t Shine. Besides having played quite a fantastic role in recent independent cinema through her varied associations, Seimetz also cast Kate Lyn Sheil, a fantastic actress, in the main role. It’s a little hard to explain the film’s plot, but essentially Sheil plays Amy, a woman convinced she’s going to die tomorrow, a feeling that starts spreading to others around her. I’m not sure if you would get this just from watching the film, because it’s pretty vague and even a little confusing about what is happening despite the high concept premise.
For the first 15 minutes or so, the camera spends the entire time watching Sheil as she cries and hugs a wall, while listening to the same opera record over and over. When her friend Jane (Jane Adams) comes over to check on her, she finds her vacuuming in a fancy dress. Amy tells her friend that she’s going to die tomorrow, and she wants to be turned into a leather jacket. Soon, after we’re watching Jane, a scientist, going down the same wormhole as Amy. That’s pretty much the running narrative, although the film opens up when we meet some of Jane’s family and friends, including Katie Aselton, Chris Messina, Tunde Adebimpe, Michelle Rodriguez and more. Soon after we meet them, they TOO are convinced that they’re going to die tomorrow. Incidentally (and spoiler!), no one actually dies in the movie. Heck, I’d hesitate even to call this a “horror” movie because it takes the idea of a pandemic that we’ve seen in movies like Bird Box, Contagion and others and sucks all the genre right out of it, but it still works as a character piece.
The thing is that the film looks great and also feels quite unique, which does make She Dies Tomorrow quite compelling, as well as a great vehicle for both Sheil and Seimetz. Even so, it’s also very much a downer and maybe not the best thing to watch if you aren’t in a good place, emotionally. You’ve been warned. It will open at select drive-ins this weekend, but it will then be available via VOD next Friday, August 7.
Next up, we have two fantastic and inspiring docs that premiered at Sundance earlier this year…
Tumblr media
In recent years, Ron Howard has made a pretty amazing transition into respectable documentary filmmaker, and that continues with REBUILDING PARADISE (National Geographic), which takes a look at the horrible fires that struck Northern California in November 2018, literally wiping out the town of Paradise and leaving over 50,000 people homeless and killing roughly 85 people.
It’s really horrifying to see the amount of destruction caused when a spark from a faulty transmission line ignites the particularly dry forest surrounding the town of Paradise, destroying the hospital and elementary school and displacing the homeowners. This is obviously going to be a tough film to watch, not only seeing the fires actually raze the town to the ground but also watching these not particularly wealthy people having to contend with losing their homes. (It’s even tougher to watch now since you wonder how COVID may have affected the town as it’s in better shape now then it was last year.)
Using a cinema verité approach (for the first time possible?), Howard finds a small group of people to follow, including the town’s former mayor, the school superintendent, a local police officer, and others.  It’s pretty impressive how much time this doc covers, and often, you may wonder if Ron Howard was there at all times, because it seems like he would have to have been embedded with the townspeople for an entire year to get some of the footage.
As I said, this is not an easy film to watch, especially as you watch these people dealing with so much tragedy – if you’ve seen any of the docs about Sandy Hook, you might have some idea how hard this movie may be to watch for you. But it is great, since it shows Howard achieving a new level as a documentary filmmaker with a particularly powerful piece.
Tumblr media
Produced by Kerry Washington, THE FIGHT (Magnolia Pictures) is the latest doc from Weiner directors Elyse Steinberg, Josh Kriegman, this time joined as director by that film’s editor, Eli B. Despres. The “fight” of the title is the one between the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Trump administration that began shortly after his inauguration in 2017, his Muslim travel ban that quickly followed, and going up until mid-2019 when a lot of obvious civil rights violations were being perpetrated by the U.S. government.
This is a particularly interesting doc if you weren’t aware of how active the ACLU has been in helping to protect people’s rights on a variety of fronts. The doc covers four particular cases involving immigration, LGBTQ rights, voting rights and reproductive rights, and we watch the lawyers involved in four important cases, including a few that are taken right up to the Supreme Court. In following these four particular lawyers, the filmmakers do a great job helping the viewer understand how important the ACLU is in keeping the conservative right at bay from trying to repeal some previous laws made to protect Americans’ rights.
Of course, this film is particularly timely since it covers a lot of dramatic changes, including the nomination of Justice Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, which ends up being ironic, since he was the judge presiding over an earlier ACLU case involving a pregnant teen immigrant who isn’t allowed to get an abortion. The movie doesn’t skirt the fact that often the ACLU is called upon to help the likes of white supremacists and potential terrorist factions, since they’re about protecting everyone’s rights. I would have loved to hear more about this, but it does cover the backlash to the ACLU after the Charlottesville protests went horribly wrong in 2017.
Be warned that there are moments in this film where the waterworks will start flowing since seeing the ACLU succeed against oppression is particularly moving. If you’ve been following the country’s shifting politics keenly and want to learn more about the ACLU, The Fight does a great job getting behind closed doors and humanizing the organization.
The Fight will be available on all digital and On Demand platforms starting Friday, and you can find out how to rent it at the Official Site.
Tumblr media
Vinnie Jones (remember him?) stars in Scott Wiper’s crime-thriller THE BIG UGLY (Vertical) about a pair of British mobsters who travel to West Virginia to make an oil deal in order to launder money. Once there, they encounter some troubles with the locals, particularly the sadistic son of Ron Perlman’s Preston, the man with whom they’re dealing.
Sometimes, as a film critic, you wonder how a movie that has so much potential can turn into such an unmitigated disaster, but then you watch a movie like The Big Ugly, and you realize that some bad filmmakers are better at talking people into doing things than others.
That seems to be the case with this film in which Jones plays Leland, who comes to West Virginia with his boss Harris (McDowell) to make an oil deal with Ron Perlman’s Preston, only for the latter’s son “PJ” (Brandon Sklenar) causing trouble, including the potential murder of Leland’s girlfriend. Of course, one would expect to see tough guy Vinnie Jones out for revenge against the endless parade of sleaze-balls he encounters, and that may have been a better movie than what Wiper ended up making, which is all over the place in terms of tone. (It was only after I watched the film did I realize that Wiper wrote and directed the absolutely awful WWE Film, The Condemned, also starring Jones. If I only knew.)
Jones isn’t even the worst part of the cast, in terms of the acting, because both McDowell and Perlman, two great actors, struggle through the terrible material, though Perlman generally fares better than McDowell, who doesn’t seem to be giving it his all.
There’s a whole subplot involving one of PJ’s friends/co-workers (recent Emmy nominee Nicholas Braun from  HBO’s Succession) and his relationship with a pretty local (Lenora Crichlow) that goes nowhere and adds nothing to the overall story. Once PJ is seemingly dealt with, there’s still almost 35 minutes more of movie, including a long monologue by Perlman telling a sorely wasted Bruce McGill how he met McDowell’s character. Not only does it kill any and all momentum leading up to that point, but it’s probably something that should have been part of the set-up earlier in the film.
The fact this movie is so bad is pretty much Wiper’s fault, becuase he wrote a script made up of so many ideas that never really fit together – kind of like Guy Ritchie doing a very bad Deliverance remake before deciding to turn it into a straight-up Western. Wiper then tries his hardest to salvage the movie by throwing in violence and explosions and leaning heavily on the soundtrack. (The fact that both this and the far superior The Shadow of Violence used a song from the Jam was not lost on this music enthusiast.) Regardless, The Big Ugly is a pretty detestable piece of trash that couldn’t end fast enough… and it didn’t. (It played in drive-ins and select theaters last Friday but will be available on digital and  On Demand this Friday.)
Available through Virtual Cinemas (supporting Film Forum and the Laemmle in L.A) is Martha Kehoe and Joan Tosoni’s documentary, Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind, about the Canadian singer-songwriter who changed people’s impressions of Canadian culture, covering Lightfoots’s greatest triumphs and failures.
Film at Lincoln Center’s Virtual Cinema will premiere Koji Fukada’s Japanese drama A Girl Missing (Film Movement) on Friday, while New York’s Metrograph Live Screening series continues this week with Manfred Kirchheimer’s Bridge High & Stations of the Elevated starting today through Friday, and then the premiere of Nan Goldin’s Sirens (with two other shorts) starting on Friday. You can subscribe to the series for $5 a month or $50 a year.
Premiering on Disney+ this Friday is Beyoncé’s Black is King, her new visual album inspired by the lessons from The Lion King, as well as the new original Muppets series, Muppets Now. Since I haven’t seen either Lion King movie, I’m definitely looking forward more to the Muppets returning to "television.”
Launching on Netflix today is Matias Mariani’s Shine Your Eyes about a Nigerian musician who travels to Sao Paulo to look for his estranged brother and bring him back to Nigeria, as well as Sue Kim’s doc short, The Speed Cubers, set in the world of competitive Rubik cube solving and the friendly rivalry between two young “speedcubers.” Also, Season 2 of The Umbrella Academy will premiere on Netflix this Friday.
Premiering on Shudder tomorrow (Thursday, July 30) is Rob Savage’s Host, the first horror movie made during the quarantine about a group of six friends who decide to hold a séance over Zoom.
Amazon’s drive-in series continues tonight with “Movies to Inspire Your Inner Child,” playing Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Hook.
Next week, more movies not in theaters!
By the way, if you read this week’s column and have bothered to read this far down, feel free to drop me some thoughts at Edward dot Douglas at Gmail dot Com or drop me a note or tweet on Twitter. I love hearing from readers … honest!

6th Stage Goods Day 1 Report
Tumblr media
At long last…my report on the UtaPri 6th Stage event!
As you may be aware, the Maji Love Live concert has evolved from a weekend affair to a week-long event! This is mostly thanks to the goods they had for sale as early as the weekend before the concert! Since my adventure began before concert day, I decided to write my first report about buying (and trading) goods! This post will focus on the first (and easier day) of shopping.
I arrived in Tokyo on the night of May 24th. Before that, my friend in Japan had attended the goods pre-sale on the 21st and she was able to pick up some capsule goods that I need to purchase for the 6th Stage Proxy Shopping Service that I hosted. Sadly it was too late in the evening for me to do anything other than have dinner that day, so my concert buddy and I just prepared for our first shopping day, the 25th.
The 25th—a Thursday—was thankfully not as busy as anticipated. This might be because they didn’t restock anything since the previous sales day, which was the 21st. We took it easy and got in line at around 9:00am, thinking that sales would start at 10am. Turns out they weren’t supposed to start until 11am that day, but it was still a good thing we got in line when we did. It helped that the weather was decent!
So here’s how shopping worked: While waiting in line, the staff members handed out an order sheet, which was to be filled out and submitted once you got inside the exhibition hall where the merchandise was sold. They had PDF copies of the order form on the official webpage, so that helped me keep track in advance of what I needed to purchase. You’re expected to calculate the total yourself, but it turns out that the cashiers will re-calculate everything anyway. I definitely missed a few numbers here and there but the correct total was given to me at checkout.
Tumblr media
They had three people accepting forms: One person accepted only orders paid for with cash (which was the vast majority of us, including myself); one person took the ones paid for with credit card, and one person accepted either. Once it was your turn, you’d pick a line according to how you planned to pay. They’d attach a numbered ticket to your sheet and give you a ticket of the same number. Items for each order were processed in the order that forms were received. If you had participated in my proxy shopping service, you might remember when I said that you could name some alternate items to purchase in case items were sold out. That didn’t work, and the reason why is that they don’t allow you to change your order after you submit the form. So once that form is handed over, it’s a matter of waiting and hoping that they have what you requested. Since there was no restock of items on the 25th, I didn’t have to worry about T-shirts or light sticks since those had been sold out on the 21st and weren’t being re-stocked until the 26th. So I used the first shopping day to pick up what I knew was available, like the trading items. The wait in line after submitting the form was probably around an hour? I can’t quite remember. I spent that time texting my friend who was a bit separated from me in line because they needed to check to make sure her U.S. credit card would be accepted. They played UtaPri music in the background too! ^^ Once it was our turn, we were directed to the first available cashier. We’d give them our numbered ticket and they looked for the corresponding basket, and then confirmation of items began. Fortunately I was able to get everything I requested for that day! After payment was completed, we were then directed towards the exit/back of the room, where there were tables set up with shopping bags so you can bag your own items. I took a bunch of bags just in case, although I didn’t really need them (I used one as a mat to sit on the ground when it was time to trade XD)
Tumblr media
Towards the exit, there’s a station selling CDs and DVDs, and on the opposite side a barricade separating the incoming customers from the outgoing customers, decorated with banners of each character. At the booth, they were doing a promotion in which you received a poster with the purchase of a CD, or a signed bromide with the purchase of a DVD. I wasn’t interested but my friend ended up buying two CDs, thus receiving two posters. I think were done some time after noon, but before 1pm. Either way, it was a LONG wait. After that was done, my friend and I exited the area and went outside of the mall, where we found a lot of other customers sitting around trading items. This part was fun but also kind of frustrating. What was fun was the trading of course! I noticed that people had different trading styles—some people walked around to look at what other people had, and asked which character(s) they were looking for. Some people who were sitting around had come prepared with signs indicating which characters they were looking for and which ones they had to trade. And though it was hard to tell, many people were probably also tweeting photos of their stash and naming their requests, waiting for responses to come in. I’ll talk more about trading via Twitter in my next report. I mainly sat around instead of hunting because there was an array of characters I was looking for on behalf of other people, and also to help my friend who was trading for Syo items and doesn’t speak Japanese. It was pretty successful, although I hadn’t completed my trading that day, which meant I had to continue over the next few days.
Tumblr media
What was frustrating was the fact that the staff refused to accommodate customers when it came to trading. There was a rule stated on the website that “trading around the merch area was not permitted,” meaning most of us sat outside or around the mall area. Trading was also not permitted by law in the park next to the mall as well. When the area outside the mall got crowded, staff started to tell people to leave. A friend told me that people inside the mall were also eventually told to leave because they were taking up sitting space for other mall goers. What I’m thinking is, why are you making “trading” items and going through the trouble of renting out mall space to sell said items, yet refuse to offer the space for us to trade that would prevent the public from being inconvenienced?? Why not create a designated area to be able to trade the items that you MEANT for us to trade?? They do this for cosplayers when it comes to photography—at most exhibition events, they designate “cosplay areas” where cosplay photography is acceptable. Taking photos of cosplay is banned in other parts of the event because it can get in the way of other attendees and cause crowding. If you know that customers are going to want to trade the items that you’re selling to them, and you don’t want them to cause a disturbance to the general public, it would make sense for you to create such a space that benefits the customers and other shoppers. Hopefully if there’s a suggestion box or a survey then people can suggest this for next year!
My next report will be about the second and most grueling day of shopping—it was incredibly tiring but a lesson well-learned if I ever get a chance to go back to Japan for a future concert!

What is Phygital Marketing? How to Use It and 5 Consumer Marketing Examples
What is phygital marketing? Nope, it’s not a typo. This is a real thing. And we’re gonna define it for you:
Phygital marketing involves merging the worlds (and words) of both physical and digital experiences.
For example, phygital marketing involves communicating with potential customers who might toggle between in-store and online shopping.  While mobile shopping continues to rise, customers also use their mobile devices to enhance in-store shopping experiences.
And the experience matters a great deal, especially for those of us in B2B. 86% of B2B buyers say they’re willing to pay more for an awesome experience. Almost half of B2B buyers have completed an impulse purchase after a stellar experience.
Lots of B2B marketers seem reluctant to admit that all consumer trends end up making their way to B2B. But your “buyers” are also “consumers” for the 16 hours they’re not working every day. So let’s keep an open mind.
When carried out with careful planning, phygital marketing is a powerful tool for connecting with and engaging customers.
Quick takeaways:
In B2C, consumers still want certain sensory aspects of the real-life shopping experience despite e-commerce popularity.
Phygital marketing optimizes the experience for B2B customers as well. How you do that depends on your audience and your products/services.
Phygital marketing examples show that the concept can be anything from an all-encompassing business strategy to a few tweaks to improve the experience.
What is Phygital Marketing?
A few weeks ago, I received an email from my good friend James Tennant from Converge that looks at trending keywords and phrases, as well as related questions and propositions from a range of B2B topics.  It identified “Phygital Marketing” as an important search trend in marketing.
So I did some research to share my findings with you. (By the way, I recommend signing up for his Converge ‘TrendingUp’ keyword insights email newsletter.)
Phygital marketing takes the best aspects of both real-life and online purchases to improve the experience as a whole.
We’ve all heard talk about physical storefronts dying out, especially with e-commerce accelerating under COVID-19 restrictions. However, people still demand certain sensory aspects of the real-life shopping experience.
An optimized phygital marketing strategy prioritizes sensory experiences you can’t get via an app. In B2B, it seems phygital marketing would be even more important: The stakes are higher.
Phygital marketing can also use digital technology to enhance physical experiences.
How to Develop a Phygital Marketing Strategy
You can follow these few simple steps to build your strategy:
Research Your Audience
If you’re mainly an e-commerce outfit, ask yourself what physical sensory experiences your audience might be lacking.
On the other hand, brands with physical storefronts should ask themselves how digital technology and activity could enhance real-life experience.
Start with your reviews and feedback for inspiration – what issues do buyers give for turning you’re your product most often? Investigate data from unhappy clients – what went wrong and how could you use a phygital marketing strategy to fix it?
Different demographics shop and interact with the internet in distinct ways. For example, 51% of consumers who use mobile shopping apps open them inside the store to access discounts, compare prices, and research reviews. Meanwhile, 66% of Gen Z say in-store availability is important.
In B2B, buyers are younger than ever and younger than most marketers think, so keep that in mind as you develop your marketing strategy.
Surveys are always a smart way to crowdsource ideas for improving your shopping experience.
Consider Your Goals
Some brands find phygital marketing attractive because it helps them scale their in-store operations and overhead. Meanwhile, e-commerce brands might want to use phygital marketing to reach new audiences.
What are you hoping to achieve? Certain types of phygital marketing require heavy investments so make sure you have goals and a strategy laid out before diving in.
Prioritize Emotions and Senses
Physical stores aren’t only about shopping anymore – they’re about creating a sensory experience.
The internet allows us to see and hear. However, our other three senses – taste, smell, and touch – are absent from any online shopping experience.
But there’s another aspect difficult to replicate online: human connection and the emotions associated with it.
Sure, you could create conversational content, use images of real people, implement live chats, and talk to your customers on social media. It still isn’t the same as being physically present in a different environment.
5 Examples of Phygital Marketing
You’ve probably used phygital marketing on countless occasions without even thinking about it!
Keep in mind some of the phygital marketing strategies from the following examples might not be totally workable during COVID-19 measures while others might be ideal. Some may be relevant to B2C but not B2B. But we can learn from all of these. It helps to think long-term.
Pop-Up Stores or Event Booths
Pop-ups at local festivals, craft shows, industry events, or marketplaces are an awesome way to engage with your audience. These phygital tactics are particularly useful for building hype before product launches or promoting high-ticket products.
The high-end audio company, Sonos, partnered with Google and set up isolated sound chambers in select cities where patrons could experience exciting 3D soundscapes. A preloaded iPad let visitors personalize their experience. Sonos could also analyze data from the app to learn about their audience.
youtube
These Sonos popups could double as a B2B marketing strategy for reaching businesses interested in buying superior sound tech for their theaters, studios, or venues.
Create a Real-World Playground or Information Center
Banks face a catch-22: Customers complete most banking online, but 50% of people prefer visiting in-person branches for certain services.
Capital One transformed many branches across major cities into coffee shops with coworking spaces, workshops, and educational/coaching centers. The bank saw demand for human interaction and used it to create a valuable community space.
This strategy is particularly smart for B2B. Despite the WeWork scandal, co-working spaces are still flourishing around the country – especially as professionals working from home need an escape from their house.
Research your audience and consider opening a physical branded café where your largest audience (or biggest market potential) lies.
You could offer spaces for meetings, printing, mail, and general Wi-Fi use. Of course, keep a brand concierge on standby to answer questions.
You might also follow the Amazon Go strategy: Create a touchless experience by letting patrons order from their phone or just take what they’d like and automatically charge them after they leave.
Create a Consumer Product Sample
Today, lots of startups launch as a consumer product with the long-term goal of going B2B. Take Perfect Day – a California-based vegan food startup – for example.
Perfect Day launched their flagship vegan ice cream alternative as a consumer product. It quickly sold out, but the founders had no intention of restocking. Why?
The goal was to market the technology behind the animal-free “dairy” alternative to larger businesses and manufacturers.
Smart move: Perfect Day used physical marketing to show how successful their product was with consumers while using digital tools to market the tech to businesses.
Implement Augmented Reality Features
Amazon, Target, and other major retailers have all launched augmented reality tools for customers to see what furniture would look like inside their home.
B2Bs haven’t fallen behind though.
Medical device manufacturers, aircraft companies, and even food processing companies have all jumped onto the augmented reality trend to blend the physical and digital worlds.
youtube
Incorporate Wearable Technology
Wearables offer a unique phygital marketing opportunity. Take Hilton for example. Guests at the Hilton America’s Leadership Conference each received a wearable device that allowed them to seamlessly exchange contact information.
The device also used gamification to encourage engagement: Attendees earned points for every interaction that they could trade in for merch at the event shop.
It worked!
Each attendee ended up making an average of 31 connections.
Wearable devices can also:
Help attendees navigate the event
Bookmark places or sessions
Allow or deny access restricted areas (depending on their status)
Enable touchless signups
Provide detailed itineraries
Allow staff to communicate
Manage traffic flow and prevent bottlenecks
Conduct secure transactions
Expect wearables to become the norm at events in a post-COVID-19 world as hosts look for ways to go touchless and prevent bottlenecks.
Plus, you get access to previously untapped metrics and analytics.
What is Phygital Marketing to You?
As COVID-19 measures reshape the way we conduct business, expect the importance of phygital marketing to grow.
The surge in online shopping and business surely won’t go back to pre-pandemic levels. However, people will also develop a new appreciation for real-world experiences, realizing they took in-person interactions for granted.
Each brand will need to develop a unique approach towards merging the digital experience and in-store shopping. What will work best for your audience and offerings?

Fascinating We’re The Russos footage from a trip on the world’s highest railway in Tibet
‘The landscape looked like the moon.’
That’s how traveller Joe Russo described the breathtaking scenery he saw from the train he rode with his wife, Kait, along the world’s highest railway from Xining in China to Lhasa in Tibet, which has a peak elevation of 16,627ft (5,067 metres).
It’s a unique journey – so high that oxygen is pumped into the carriages to mitigate the effects of altitude sickness – and the YouTube video the Russos posted that documented their experience of it has garnered over 870,000 views.
Joe and Kait Russo filmed a trip along the highest railway in the world in Tibet – but the first railway leg was a bullet train from Beijing. This still from their video shows Kait looking for their seats on it
Kait Russo, pictured, describes the bullet train business class section as ‘so fancy’
Joe, pictured, was extremely impressed with the Beijing bullet train. ‘The train was extremely smooth and we had a very comfortable trip during this leg,’ he told MailOnline Travel
This still from the Russos’ YouTube video shows the meal served on the bullet train, which was included in the price of the ticket
The Russos’ railway adventure covered a distance of around 2,250 miles, from the Chinese capital to lofty Lhasa
Joe, from Los Angeles, and Kait, from Beijing, boarded the train in Xining, but their rail journey began in Beijing – and that’s where the video begins.
It shows the couple checking into the business lounge and then boarding a 186mph (300kph) bullet train to Lanzhou, eight hours and 900 miles away.
They had business-class tickets, which meant lie-flat seats.
Joe told MailOnline Travel: ‘We decided to upgrade to business class for this leg of the trip and were very happy we did so. We started early in the morning, so it was nice to have seats that recline flat in order to relax and take naps along the way. The train was extremely smooth and we had a very comfortable trip during this leg. Drinks, snacks and a meal were also included with our ticket.’
Xining station, where Joe and Kait boarded a train to Lhasa, around 1,200 miles away
Joe in his four-bed soft sleeper compartment during the 20-hour journey from Xining to Lhasa
After that leg was a ride on another bullet train – to Xining, 150 miles away.
Joe continued: ‘After an hour-long layover in Lanzhou we boarded another high-speed train to Xining. This leg was two-and-a-half hours and while we weren’t in business class, the first-class seats were also very comfortable.
‘They didn’t serve food on this leg of the trip, but there is always hot water available on the trains in China so many passengers will bring instant noodle soups to eat on the train.
‘It was very interesting to see the countryside of China but what was very surprising to us was rather than seeing many small rural towns along the way, high-rise apartment-style buildings dominated the landscape. It was incredible to see because in some places there would be dozens of identical buildings – and many of these “cities” appeared to be empty.’
Joe said that he suffered from altitude sickness on the train to Lhasa, which trundles over a vast plateau that has, on average, an elevation of 13,123ft (4,000m)
Out of this world: The scenery on the journey to Tibet was like a moonscape, Joe said
Joe said: ‘During the night, we could begin to feel the effects of the elevation as the train climbed over various passes. You could also hear the oxygen being pumped into the train cars’
Next came the ‘highest railway leg’ from Xining to Lhasa, the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region, sitting at an altitude of 3,656m (11,994ft), 1,200 miles away.
And here Joe noticed a change in the demographics.
He said: ‘When we arrived in Xining, the demographics changed quite a bit and I was surprised to find that there were very few other Westerners. The station is quite big so we had a chance to walk around and stretch our legs, which was nice, because the next leg of the journey to Lhasa would be just over 20 hours long.’
The journey is astonishingly lofty, with the train passing through Tanggula Railway Station – which at an elevation of 16,640ft is the highest station in the world – the Fenghuoshan Tunnel, which at 16,093ft above sea level is the highest tunnel in the world, and along a vast plateau region that is on average 13,123ft (4,000m) high.
The train to Lhasa passes through Tanggula Railway Station – which at an elevation of 16,640ft is the highest station in the world – and the Fenghuoshan Tunnel, which at 16,093ft above sea level is the highest railway tunnel in the world
The rail trip was part of an eight-day tour of Tibet in 2018, which also included a visit to the Everest tourist base camp, on the Chinese side
Joe said: ‘The snow gave way to grassy plains where we saw yaks being herded by the nomadic people’
Passengers, as the Russos discovered, can suffer as a result.
Joe explains on the video that he gets altitude sickness above five or six thousand feet and during the journey he ‘could feel pressure in his nasal passages and felt like passing out for a few hours’ and started to get a ‘really bad’ headache.
He added: ‘During the night, we could begin to feel the effects of the elevation as the train climbed over various passes. You could also hear the oxygen being pumped into the train cars at different times throughout the ride to help passengers combat altitude sickness.’
The bathroom facilities on the train were a mixture of Chinese (pictured) and Western styles
THE RUSSOS’ CRUCIAL TRAVEL ITEMS
‘We always carry a water purifying bottle so we can fill up anywhere and not worry about trying to find or buy bottled water. Toilet paper is a must because we’ve encountered many facilities that don’t provide (or had run out of) toilet paper throughout our travels. Finally, a good carry-on size roller bag and backpacks. We travel very light so we always have one shared roller bag and we each have a backpack. This setup works whether we’re on a one-week adventure or a month-long journey. ‘
When the Russos woke up, though, their jaws dropped.
Joe said: ‘When we boarded the night train out of Xining, it was late, so we went straight to our soft sleeper compartment – each compartment had four beds – and crawled into bed once the train left the station.
‘It was too dark to see the scenery and we were exhausted after the day’s journey.
‘In the morning, we woke up to a landscape that looked like the moon. It was covered in snow and looked completely desolate. We were in awe throughout the day as we watched the scenery change from one type of landscape to another.
‘The snow gave way to grassy plains where we saw yaks being herded by the nomadic people. At various times throughout the trip, there would be pre-recorded messages (in English and Chinese) played through the speakers to provide interesting information about what we could see from the windows.
‘There is also a paved road that follows the railroad mainly trafficked by large trucks carrying cargo to Lhasa.
‘While most of the landscape was covered by snow or grass, at different times, we would pass through small towns. For most of the journey, our eyes were glued to the scenery outside.’
The train made brief stops at various stations, but the doors were never opened to allow passengers off for a stretch of the legs, which Joe said was a bit of a surprise.

THE NEXT ‘HIGHEST RAILWAY’…
India’s Bilaspur-Manali-Leh railway line will reach a height of 5,359 metres (17,582ft) when it’s completed in 2022.
He was also surprised by the ‘well-stocked dining car’, which had a ‘good selection of Chinese dishes on the menu’.
What’s more, fresh vegetables were growing in pots and cut to order for each dish.
‘We enjoyed all the dishes, especially the vegetable stir-fries,’ said Joe.
The rail trip was part of an eight-day tour of Tibet in 2018, which also included a visit to the Everest tourist base camp, on the Chinese side.
And it came three years after the Russos adopted a ‘digital nomad’ lifestyle and launched their ‘We’re The Russos’ brand.

Joe has written two books about his RV lifestyle
Joe explained: ‘In 2015 we decided to leave our corporate careers behind, sell our house and many of our belongings to hit the road full-time with our two dogs in a motorhome.
‘It was supposed to be a one-year adventure with an end date and plans to go back to work and settle down again.
‘However, we quickly embraced the freedom and flexibility of the lifestyle and decided to keep going indefinitely.
‘Since we only saved up enough money to travel for one year, we had to figure out a way to earn a living while travelling. That’s when we started our own content creation company producing videos for our YouTube channel, articles for our website and I have self-published two books so far.
‘The first book, Take Risks, documents everything we went through from coming up with this idea to hitting the road and the second book, Tales From the Open Road, details our first year and a half on the road.
‘In sharing our journey and experiences, we hope to inspire others to live the life that they want.’

Rebecca McCarthy | Longreads | Month 2018 | 10 minutes (2,519 words)
In May of 2017, Mayor de Blasio unveiled Jimmy Breslin Way, a street sign dedicating the stretch of 42nd Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenue to the late reporter. It was a strange press conference — half eulogy, half lecture — a chance for the mayor to laud Breslin and scold members of today’s media by whom he often feels unfairly maligned. “Think about what Jimmy Breslin did. Think about how he saw the world,” said de Blasio. He left without taking questions. What was he talking about? Did he imagine he and Jimmy Breslin would get along? In 1969 Breslin wrote a cover story about Mayor Lindsay for New York Magazine, “Is Lindsay Too Tall to Be Mayor?” was the title. Lindsay was an inch shorter than de Blasio.
In 2010, Heike Geissler took a temporary position at an Amazon warehouse in Leipzig. Geissler was a freelance writer and a translator but, more pressingly, she was the mother of two children and money was not coming in. Seasonal Associate, which was translated by Katy Derbyshire and released by Semiotext(e) this month, is the product of that job. (Read an excerpt on Longreads.) It’s an oppressive, unsettling book, mainly because the work is too familiar. The book is written almost entirely in the second person, a style that might’ve come off as an irritating affectation with a lesser writer or a different subject. Here, it’s terrifying — you feel yourself slipping along with Geissler, thoughts of your own unpaid bills and the cold at the back of your throat weaving their way through the narrative. It’s not just that this unnamed protagonist could be you, it’s the certainty that someday she will be you. “You’ll soon know something about life that you didn’t know before, and it won’t just have to do with work,” Geissler writes. “But also with the fact that you’re getting older, that two children cry after you every morning, that you don’t want to go to work, and that something about this job and many other kinds of jobs is essentially rotten.”
*
The question of who killed New York used to be up for debate. Was it John Lindsay, who couldn’t face reality, who covered the city’s debts with short-term, high interest loans he knew were impossible to repay? His successor, Abe Beame, who bent to the demands of the bankers and gutted the social safety net during the fiscal crisis of the 70’s? Ed Koch, who embraced Beame’s cuts wholeheartedly and mocked past mayors as men who wanted New York “to be the No. 1 welfare city in America”? Giuliani, who launched the deregulation of rent controlled apartments and the quality of life campaign that gave us Broken Windows and COMPSTAT? (I’m not mentioning David Dinkins, because I really don’t think David Dinkins brought us here.) Was it Hipsters and their attendant paraphernalia? Was it the McKibbin Lofts? Union Pool? Was it Shred Stuy?
Inventory work provides Geissler with a granular view of consumerism. Stripped of the marketing and storefronts that make it palatable it quickly begins to look like a form of mental illness. Who is buying these mugs, stamped with George Clooney’s face?
All New York City mayors are venal, but some are more venal than others. A few months ago, I would have told you Bloomberg was to blame, our bloodless, billionaire mayor, who rezoned the city’s most vulnerable neighborhoods and openly courted real estate investment from foreign billionaires. Rents rose at neat clip alongside the homeless population. To his credit, Bloomberg — a very short man — was always transparent about where his priorities lay. The city, he said, was a “luxury product” and it should behave that way.
De Blasio was supposed to be the antidote to the Bloomberg years, a progressive underdog who ran on universal pre-k and affordable housing. But that affordable housing has largely failed to materialize — where it’s been built, it’s often still pretty unaffordable — and his administration has been marked by disappointing half-measures and an ill-conceived plan for a ridiculous four billion dollar streetcar no one wants.
On Black Friday, Amazon workers staged mass walkouts across Europe. On Cyber Monday, led by community groups Make the Road New York and New York Communities for Change (NYCC), protestors stormed Amazon’s Midtown bookstore to protest the planned headquarters in Long Island City and later gathered in front of the LIC Civil Courthouse chanting “I stand in the rain, I stand in the snow, Amazon has got to go!” City Council members Jimmy Van Bremer, Jumanne Williams, and Melissa Mark-Vitero were all in attendance — Williams and Mark-Vitero, it should be noted, are both running for Public Advocate. All of them decried the incentives offered to Amazon, which total about 3 billion. Williams claimed they were steamrolled by the Mayor and Governor Cuomo and that while Cuomo’s betrayal was no surprise, the de Blasio administration was “the biggest waste of progressive capital [Williams had] ever seen.”

It might’ve been a good show of force, had not all of the aforementioned politicians signed the letter urging Amazon to build its headquarters in New York. What did they think was going to happen? A New York Times investigation released earlier this year showed that the city had lost 152,000 rent-regulated apartments since 1993. The subway system is crumbling, the state leads the nation in income inequality, and the homeless population is at an all time high. No reasonable human being could look around and conclude that the answer to all these problems is to give the most avaricious company in the world the keys to the city. Amazon swallows everything it touches, it isn’t interested in civic health. Only half of the jobs being brought in are in tech and many of the low level positions will likely be replaced by robots fairly soon, but for now, these are the jobs for which the Mayor sold the city. “At any rate,” Geissler writes, early on in Seasonal Associate, “it’s almost impossible not to be forced to your knees and into defiance by this job you’re about to have.”
*
Geissler was hired in the warehouse to handle the Christmas rush, hence the title, and the cold is so omnipresent it seems to be a feature of the company rather than simply the reality of winter. A gate that will not latch properly becomes a major antagonist and everyone is either ill or on the verge of falling ill, although they have been warned specifically against this. “Sick days hurt Amazon,” Geissler is told at her orientation. Precarity manifests as a constant, low-grade fever. You’re the protagonist but her voice leads you through the job, a tired Virgil navigating a new circle of hell. The work is inventory — entering items into the system so they can be purchased online and performing at least a cursory check to make sure they’re undamaged. “Everything exists, in case you were going to ask,” says Geissler. “Absolutely everything exists, and people can buy it all.” Despite the scale of the warehouse, inventory work provides Geissler with a granular view of consumerism. Stripped of the marketing and storefronts that make it palatable it quickly begins to look like a form of mental illness. Who is buying these mugs, stamped with George Clooney’s face? Who needs these pre-distressed Iron Maiden hats, already rags at point of purchase? Amazon customers, which is to say, all of us.
Geissler tried to sell the book as straightforward journalism initially and was turned down by five publishers, likely because book is largely boring. It’s a propulsive, weaponized banality though — something unnatural is going on here and it’s hard to see a way out.
Geissler isn’t the typical warehouse employee and as a temporary contractor she’s something of a tourist at Amazon. She’s well-educated, she’s white, she lives with the father of her children, and she’s normally able to make a living — however precarious — as a writer. There’s significant privilege there. Many people spend their entire lives working shitty, unforgiving jobs with arbitrary, infantilizing rules and part of the reason Geissler is so attuned to the myriad indignities of Amazon is because she’s unused to them. She’s aware of this position though. “It has to be said right away,” she writes, “that no one is suited for unhappiness, yet this fact doesn’t get enough recognition.” Seasonal Associate is a book about slippage and a sudden fall into the working class, but it’s a document of anxiety and futility rather than stunt journalism. The central rallying point in the warehouse is a desk made out of a door — a replica of Jeff Bezos’ desk when he founded Amazon; an absurd symbol of frugality and the company’s dedication to customer satisfaction over employees’ personal comfort. As if every warehouse worker has the potential to become the richest man in the world, if only they would stop buying such expensive desks. The idea that if you work hard enough you will inevitably rise out of poverty has always been a sham and Amazon has taken it to it’s logical endpoint. You work hard and nothing happens. You will never be good enough at your job, because you’re a human being, not a machine. As long as you’re alive you’re a potential problem for the company.
Local Bookstores Amazon
In order to maintain some sense of agency Geissler stages tiny acts of rebellion — refusing to hold a handrail despite the signs instructing her to hold the handrail, keeping her safety vest in her pocket until she absolutely has to put it on. The gestures are adolescent and effectively meaningless, but every time she’s snide it’s a relief — a sign of life. Much later, after her contract is finished, she recognizes a man in a parking lot who she described as Amazon’s “only hipster.” The last time she’d seen him he was docking people’s pay for what’s commonly known as time theft. They had lined up a few minutes early to leave work, rather than waiting, unpaid, to go through security. “Unable to think of anything better,” says Geissler. “Or because it seemed like the most appropriate idea, I called out the name of a book I’d just read, by Mark Greif and others. I yelled at him: What Was the Hipster! I called it twice and I thought then he might know he was over.”
Geissler tried to sell the book as straightforward journalism initially and was turned down by five publishers, likely because book is largely boring. It’s a propulsive, weaponized banality though — something unnatural is going on here and it’s hard to see a way out. “You’ve completely forgotten that you have a profession and are only here to alleviate momentary poverty,” Geissler writes, just after her interview at Amazon. “Something inside you is essentially unsettled and will never calm down again, even though you do get the job. From this point on, you are beside yourself with worry.”
My own mother raised two kids by herself as a high school English teacher and she took a number of side jobs to supplement her income. Tutoring, working at a bakery, working at a strange, luxury gardening store that sold copper birdhouses and rocks that said things like “LOVE” and “CREATE” for people who couldn’t. None of them were bad jobs, none as oppressive as warehouse work, but they did not pay very well. Her desk (worse than Jeff Bezos’) was just a slab of wood, perched atop two filing cabinets. She never made a big deal out of that though, because she is not an asshole. She’d wake up at four or five in the morning to grade the lousy papers of teenage Republicans and shovel the walkway, but she still tried to read to me and my brother before putting us to bed. Oftentimes she’d fall asleep mid-sentence and start mumbling about the electricity bill or replacing the boiler. Eventually, a doctor told her she had to relax — her blood pressure was dangerously high, her muscles so tense that when she breathed, her ribs barely moved.
If you think you’re immune to this — if you went to college, if you believe you’re upwardly mobile, if you imagine you will comfortably survive the inevitable spike in rent once Amazon’s headquarters settles into Queens — unless you have vast familial wealth to draw on, I’m sorry but you’re wrong.
My mom was thrown into financial uncertainty (and my dad wasn’t even a deadbeat) by an early divorce and the responsibility for two small children, but at this point that choking feeling is basically just the lived experience of the average American. In a conversation with Hans Ulrich Obrist in 2003 J.G. Ballard said that “the totalitarian systems of the future will be subservient and ingratiating, the false smile of the bored waiter rather than the jackboot.” This is it, the future is here now. It’s because Geissler doesn’t fit the typical profile of an Amazon warehouse worker that her book is such a well-timed warning shot. Without immediate collective action, this is coming for all of us.

“Too tall,” Breslin clarified, about Mayor Lindsay, “means too Manhattanish, too removed from the problems of the street corners.” He wrote “Is Lindsay Too Tall to Be Mayor?” shortly after his own failed mayoral bid with Norman Mailer, a campaign that left him “nervous and depressed.”
“I saw a sprawling, disjointed place which did not understand itself and was decaying physically and spiritually, decaying with these terrible little fires of rage flickering in the decay…On top of the city was an almost unworkable form of government and a set of casually unknowing, unfeeling, uncaring men and institutions. The absence of communications in a city which is the communications center of the world is so bad that you are almost forced to believe the condition of the city is terminal.”
If that doesn’t sound familiar, it will soon. On December 12, the New York City Council held the first of a series of hearings on the new Amazon headquarters. Protestors covered the balcony and unfurled a No HQ2 Banner. “It’s all smoke and mirrors!” a man yelled. “Don’t let them monopolize the city! Don’t let them near the subways, don’t let them near the schools — these guys are lying creeps!” He was escorted out.
Amazon has become so large that it can have the same pacifying effect as the threat of climate change, but despair isn’t helpful right now. As Hamilton Nolan and Dave Colon have already pointed out over at Splinter, Amazon’s New York headquarters represents the best chance at effectively unionizing the company and the resistance to HQ2 is broad and growing. Still, it was difficult to watch the City Council hearing without a paralyzing sense of dread. Amazon is a contractor with ICE, they have a horrific labor record, and they’re accountable to no one. That guy was right, these people are lying creeps, as are many of the people we’ve elected. There’s such a long and rich tradition of grift in this city that it’s rare to be able to definitively level blame, but here we are. De Blasio was too tall to be mayor and we didn’t see it. “Is this all a matter of life and death?” Geissler writes, at the very beginning of Seasonal Associate. “I’ll say no for the moment and come back to the question later. At that point, I’ll say: Not directly, but in a way yes. It’s a matter of how far death is allowed into our lives.”

All You Need To Know About metal fabrication.
Don’t hesitate to speak comprehensive with your steel structure distributor. Define carefully what you want the building for, whether it is for a horse barn, a church, a warehouse, or production plant. Make sure the provider understands precisely what the final use the building will be. The building use will influence many design decisions and also ultimately the last price. Do recognize specifically just what you want prior to you order. It’s about recognizing just what you desire and also understanding where to search for it. There are construction tasks out there, you simply have to make the effort to find an opening that works for you. While checking out standard aid classifieds could take a good deal of time, reading on the internet task sites fasts, easy and also spans the whole nation so your chances of locating a task are that far better. If you’re interested in sheet steel work, don’t waste your time slogging via hundreds of classified ad for one potential task lead, when you could check the online options rather. You’ll discover a whole world of possibilities waiting on you.
The final smoothing out of the sheet metal skin is called planishing.
Plaster includes strength and weight to hollow sculptures, shielding them from uncertain accidents which can cause damage. The rest of the sculpture was filled solid too, so it is relatively unbreakable. After the plaster established I chased in the scales and did some surface refinement. The last smoothing out of the sheet steel skin is called planishing. The vermiculite additive made the plaster just compressible adequate to do some minor developing. I bonded the limbs with each other with an easy steel armature, saw to it all the voids in between the arm or legs were closed, as well as cut a huge opening in the plastron so I might fill the sculpture up with plaster. Reattaching the carapace was a little bit tough. The components had all moved around a little as well as the shell no much longer fit well. I annealed the shell and squeezed it with a ratcheting band, welding as I moved the strap from front to back.
