thankful for my (found) family - demisquad + reader thanksgiving special
2.4k
platonic everyone + reader, implied future/potential leo x reader if you look real close, thalia has a girlfriend that I had to make up bc they never mention hunters of artemis but go off rick, calypso is not included bc she acts more like an antagonist imo, gif doesn’t have anything to do with it besides nostalgia lmao
happy thanksgiving <33
You and Leo are cooking in the kitchen
You have been all day
The doorbell rings, and Annabeth goes to answer, binder full of travel plans in hand
“That should be-”
Clarisse enters with a loud greeting and a hug to everyone in arms reach
Percy’s loud cheers echo from the living room as he calls out the new score of the football game he’s keeping everyone updated on
She drops her bag, hopping over the back of the couch to watch with Percy
“Woah woah, catch me up Jackson! What'd I miss?”
Hazel is helping Rachel make cute diy table settings and party favors
Rachel, as with most art projects she takes on, is very focused on making it Martha Stewart levels of cute and amazing
Frank and Piper are keeping everyone updated on the parade
Frank pops down the stairs, calling out, “The last performance just ended, the dog show starts in 5!”
Hazel drops what she's doing and exclaims, “THERE’S A DOG SHOW?!”
She runs upstairs to watch with Frank, her yellow dress swishing behind her
You chuckle, calling over to Annabeth as you mix batter in a bowl, " Hey Annabeth, how are the travel plans looking?"
She shuffles through some papers in her binder
"Magnus and Alex had another layover, but they should still be able to make it in time. Thalia and her hunter friend will be here in 10, and Travis's flight got delayed because of a sudden snow storm."
"Really?" You reply, "This time of year? That's pretty ironic for a son of Hermes..."
"I know, I'm looking at some shuttle services to see if that would be faster…" Annabeth replies
Nico enters, stealing a couple appetizers, "This is so stupid, I could just go get him."
Will, right behind him, eats the appetizer Nico hands him and replies, "No you can't. Doctors orders."
Nico starts to protest
Will shoots him a look
"Boyfriend's orders."
Nico tries in vain to stare him down, "… Va’ a farti fottere." he says, cracking a smile
"Love you too," Will counters
You and Leo shoo them out of the kitchen before they steal more of your recipes
Jason and Grover walk by with a bunch of pillows and blankets, setting up guest rooms.
Grover calls through the pile of fluff he's carrying, "Hey, we're gonna need a few more pillows-"
Jason, over his pile of bedding, corrects, "A lot more!" And Annabeth runs over to help carry some of the blankets he's about to drop
"-A lot more pillows…"
You grab your keys
"okay uh… Grover, do you want to head to the store to get some more pillows-"
Leo, vigorously sautéing something adds over his shoulder, "And basil! And, uh… red wine vinegar, olive oil, and potatoes."
You rip a piece of paper off the notepad on the fridge and scribble a quick list
You're probably going to need some more ice, too
Tyson, very distressed, holds up an empty container of mellowcream pumpkins, declaring, "THERE'S NO MORE BABY PUMPKINS!" :(
you loudly add candy pumpkins to the list
Rachel approaches.
"Are you going to the store?"
"Yeah," you reply, "how's crafting going? You need anything? "
"We're almost out of glitter and mod podge. It's not looking good. We could use some more fake leaves, warm toned glitter, and rhinestones - the nice ones."
Grover looks slightly lost
You narrate as you add to the list, "Fancy rhinestones, mod podge, fake leaves, red, yellow, orange, and brown glitter…"
Tyson, still distressed, yells, "AND BABY PUMPKINS!"
:(
You hold up the paper, "Already on the list, bud, Grover's gonna get them!"
"What if he gets the wrong kind?" Tyson asks
You, turn to Grover quietly, "Grover, can you take Tyson?"
Grover nods
"Hey Tyson, Grover has a lot of stuff to get, could you go be his shopping buddy? That way you can pick out the right baby pumpkins."
He doesn't look convinced
He wants to keep working on a secret project he’s been doing out by the garage
"And…" you add, sweetening the deal, "you can get two candies for the way home."
He agrees
You turn to Grover; "I'll call you guys an uber-"
"I'll drive."
You all turn around, shocked to see Reyna awake.
You thought she was still passed out
She showed up at 9am and immediately fell asleep from traveling all night
"Reyna, hi! Are you sure-"
"We'll be fine, I need to stretch my legs a little." She proves by rolling her shoulders
"Okay, as long as you're sure," you hand her the paper, re-entering the kitchen
She takes the paper from your hand as you shut off the beeping timer and grab a pair of oven mitts from the drawer
Reyna examines the paper, "...This is a weird list. Where are we supposed to get all this?"
Leo moves to the side as you pull out the rolls from the oven, using tongs to set them on a wire cooling rack, "Maybe target?"
Leo, still very focused on cooking, announces, "If you get me generic brand spices I will burn this place to the ground."
"O-kay," you turn back to Reyna, laughing, "there's a Wegmans and a Joanne's right next to the TJ Maxx, you can probably find everything there."
"We'll be back within the hour." She states, taking your keys.
Rachel meets her at the door. "Here, use my card. Also, make sure you get the flat backed swarovski crystals. And please pick some glitter with a nice color shift!"
You remind them to call or text with any questions and be safe
Heading back into the kitchen, you fill up a big bowl with carrots, celery, cucumbers, and mushrooms
You grab two cutting boards, knives, peelers, and a plastic bag for the peels, tips, and tails
You set it all down on the coffee table in front Percy and Clarisse
“Can you guys get the relish tray started?”
They agree, and immediately return to yelling at the referee
You shake your head laughing, and head back to the kitchen
“How we looking, Sparky?”
“Stuffing cups just went up in the oven, pie crust dough is chilling, and the green beans are almost done sauteeing. Rolls are cooling - could you stir the cranberry sauce? - and… the turkey is going up as soon as the stuffing is out.”
You stir the sauce as you continue talking
“Great! We’re making good time so far. Oh, I found a recipe for brown sugar pie, which Frank requested - apparently it’s a Canadian Thanksgiving thing - so I figured if you’re doing turkey I can handle the pies.”
He pours some cooking wine into the pan, and shakes it as the alcohol burns off
“Sounds like a plan, babycakes.”
You laugh at the nickname, and grab butter, salt, some herbs, and a stick blender to finish the potatoes
A few minutes later, you hear the door open
Reyna and the boys are back already? That was quick
You wonder if they need help bringing groceries in
“Eeeey get over here you knucklehead!”
Bags drop, and you hear Jason laughing in protest
You poke your head out of the kitchen, and see Thalia with Jason in a headlock
In spite of the fact that he’s about half a foot taller than her, she’s still noogie-ing him, pretending she can’t hear him objecting through his laughs
She finally lets him go, greeting everyone as he adjusts his glasses
She bear hugs Annabeth, punches Percy in the arm, and high fives and hugs pretty much everyone else
You run up the stairs to the guest room Grover was setting up before he left
You finish making the bed head back down, meeting Frank and Hazel on the way
"Oh, Hazel, what did you think of the dog show?"
"It blew my wig!" She says giddily
A confused smile settles on your face
"It was awesome and she loved it," Frank translates smoothly
He and Will are understandably best at deciphering 40s slang
Thalia is introducing everyone to Amber, a girl she’d met on the hunt and become really close with
You greet her, and turn to Thalia
“Your room is all set up if you wanna get settled in,” you turn to Amber, “and yours will be ready soon,”
They share a look
“Oh,” Thalia starts grabbing their bags, “that’s fine, we can share a room. We share a tent on the hunt all the time, right Ambie?”
"Oh,”
And then it clicks
“yeah, however you’re comfortable.”
You grab one of the bags, and help them upstairs
“Why don’t you guys take a while to settle in, I’ll tell the others you’re resting.”
They thank you, and you start to leave
“By the way,” you poke your head back in, “you two seem really cute together. Welcome to the family, Amber.”
She blushes and Thalia gives you an appreciative look
You nod and head back down
You let the others know they’re going to nap for a little while, and not to wake them up
“Hey, any travel updates?” You ask Annabeth, on your way back into the kitchen
“Alex just texted, she and Magnus are finally on their way, should be here in the next few hours. As for Travis…”
She holds out her phone, showing you Travis’s tiktok
He’s filming the mirror in the airport bathroom
“So uh, my flight’s delayed, I’m bored, I’m gonna fuck with some people,” he holds out a hand full of stickers that look like outlets
He records himself putting them around the airport, then gets people’s reactions when they try to use them
He ends the video asking for more prank ideas
You look back up at Annabeth, holding back a laugh, “Seems like he’s doing okay,”
“Oh,” she replies, “that’s not all.”
She scrolls up, showing the next prank video where Travis goes around the airport having fake phone conversations to get people’s reactions
Conversation topics including ‘I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but slept with your grandma’, ‘hey bro I can’t come to the party, also turns out I’m going to be your stepdad’, ‘hey dude remember that old lady we used to cat sit for? Well, I found out I got chlamydia from her, so…’, and ‘yeah man, I’m so excited for the poetry slam. Also, it turns out my jazz fever is actually syphilis.’.
Your hand flies over your mouth, trying not to laugh loudly enough to wake Thalia and Amber
“Yeah,” Annabeth says, fighting her own laughter, “he’s doing okay.”
You start putting together ingredients for pie filling
“That is the most in character thing I could have imagined,” you laugh, and Annabeth shows Leo the videos
“There’s a bunch more, too,” she adds, “Around making tiktoks, he found a bus heading this way. He’ll be here in a few hours.”
“Cutting it close,” you muse, filling pies, “I’m glad he’s not stuck at the airport though. How about Connor?”
“Haven’t heard much from him, but he said he'll be here in time for dinner."
A little while later, Thalia and Amber re enter, joining Percy and Clarisse in the living room
The door opens shortly after, and Tyson enters, arms full of containers of candy pumpkins
Reyna and Grover are right behind him
You take Grover's bags, announcing that Thalia got here a little while ago
He bleats excitedly and runs to hug her, Reyna right on his heels
Piper and Tyson bring in the rest of the groceries
Tyson sets down the last bags in the kitchen, looks out the window, yells, "IT'S ALMOST SUNSET!", and runs back out into the back yard, presumably to finish his mystery project
Everyone eventually makes their way to the living room, nibbling on appetizers and watching classic Thanksgiving specials
The food is almost done, all that's left is decorating the pies and a little tidying up
You walk over to Leo, placing your hand on his shoulder
He looks up at you
"Why don't you go take a quick shower and change before dinner," you muse, knowing the hoodie and jeans he's been cooking in all day isn't the outfit he'd picked out, "I'll wrap things up in here,"
He thanks you, dramatically presses a kiss to your forehead, and exits the kitchen
You decorate the pies distractedly, catching the doorbell right before the second ring
You smile at the people about to enter
"Annabeth," you call, "Magnus and Alex are here!"
She drops what she's doing, and runs over to greet them
Leo is back down stairs a short while later
His brick red hoodie replaced with a burgundy one - his fancy hoodie as he calls it - a heavy flannel layered on top, and a beanie pulled over his almost dry hair
His pyrokinesis makes you forget how cold he gets sometimes
You're about to go upstairs to change out of your cooking clothes when Tyson enters dramatically
"The surprise is done!"
Everyone files outside to see what Tyson made as he leads you all out to the garage
Perfectly attached to the side, is a very small horse stable
"Wow!" Percy starts, "Great job, dude!"
Tyson is beaming as he's showered with confused praise
"So uh," Percy ventures, "what did you build it for?"
"Maybe something like this?!" Descending voices declare in unicen
Travis and Connor land in front of you on no other than Blackjack
Everyone erupts into cheers
“I thought you were stuck at the airport! What about those tiktoks?”
“Saved in my drafts, baby!” Travis laughs
Percy greets Blackjack and everyone else heads back inside with Travis and Connor
You run upstairs to shower quickly and change, and are back downstairs just in time for appetizers and drinks
You're about to take a sip of coffee when the door opens
An irregular set of footsteps echoes into the room, along with a familiar voice
"Ah, children, I hope there's room for one more,"
Everyone turns in surprise as Chiron enters the room
After lots of warm excited greetings and making sure he has a warm cup of tea, he settles in to chat for a while
"I was on my way to meet with my more, ah, rambunctious cousins, but I couldn't let a day like today pass without stopping by."
After two cups of tea and lovely conversations, Chiron heads out to meet up with the other party ponies
Thalia, Percy, and Will get all the food on the dining room table while Rachel makes the finishing touches to the centerpieces
Everyone finds their seat, and you make the first toast
"I think I can speak for everyone when I say I'm thankful for you guys - my found family."
Every glass is raised
You can all drink to that.

It is utterly bizarre to me that people think of ALDI as expensive. Where I've lived (southeast to south-central PA and northern DE) ALDI has been pretty low-end. It's seen as a high-quality discount / cheapy place.
Local chains I've experienced include Weis Market (local/regional to south-central PA, standard supermarket with a very good pretzel selection), Food Lion (very normal), and ACME (very overpriced and kinda crappy). Exurbanites love Wegmans but I frankly kinda hate Wegmans, it is always located in exurbs and it focuses on prepared foods and over time has gotten worse, i.e. new stores have eliminated the bulk foods section which was like where I bought 90% of the stuff I got there. Whole Foods is expensive and overrated and I don't really know any reasonable people who like them. It's for greenwashed upper-middle-class suburbanites.
I like Trader Joe's somewhat but it has gone in much worse directions in recent years. It has systematically discontinued most of the products I used to buy. Now it's always selling stupid trendy products, and it has discontinued an increasing portion of the basic staples, which makes it a frustrating place to shop. It has always been similar to ALDI in that it's a bit cheaper than normal but fairly high-quality. It seems to target a more middle-class suburban demographic though, typically very white and kinda trendy mainstream and TBH I hate it, it's packed with "fake" appropriated items from other cultures that are almost always more expensive than and inferior to the stuff you can get in ethnic grocery stores oriented towards the people who belong to these actual cultures.
Lidl is like a fancier ALDI. Interestingly though when I went to Germany, Lidl was super low-end and made ALDI look upscale by comparison.
It’s easy to write like an American. “Katelyn stopped at Barnes and Noble on the way back from Krogers. It was 100 degrees out that day.” There you go, job done.

Vegan Pantry Starter Pack
When I first went vegan, I was seriously overwhelmed by all of the seemingly “weird” ingredients recipes called for. As a South Shore girl raised almost exclusively on fluffernutter sandwiches, Hamburger Helper, and Hood ice cream, I had no idea what the hell nutritional yeast was, or even that grocery stores even sold rice that didn’t come in a 99¢ Knorr’s packet.
And then once I finally had all of these fancy new ingredients and brought them to the cashier, my jaw dropped. Why was everything so expensive? Isn’t vegan food supposed to be cheaper?!
What I didn’t know is that I would never experience that kind of sticker shock again. See, once you jump over the hurdle of buying all of these “weird” plant-based pantry staples for the first time, it’ll be weeks, months, or even years until you have to buy them again.
I’ve divided some of the most popular vegan pantry staples into three lists depending on how often I purchase them. As you can see, I only purchase the more expensive items once every 3-4 months, as most whole-foods vegan recipes only require small amounts of them. So keep those savings in mind when experiencing sticker-shock on your $8.99 bag of raw cashews -- yes, that may seem like a lot of money upfront, but that bag should last several months. Think about it -- you wouldn’t even think twice about buying a pack of chicken breasts (by the way, a decaying animal corpse is much, much “weirder” than a bag of nuts) for the same price, and those would only last a meal or two!
*NOTE: I didn’t add prices because those can vary from store to store. Also, if you want to buy organic, that will also raise prices. Do whatever’s best for your budget. Also, the estimates below are for a household with only two adults and no (human) children.
PURCHASE ONCE PER YEAR
All Vinegars: Red, White, Rice, Apple Cider, etc.
I buy vinegar in bulk and use only a few tablespoons per month.
Liquid Smoke
If you’re someone who loves smoky, BBQ flavors, you may have to buy this more often, but a few drops go a long way, so a small bottle will last awhile!
Molasses
I really only use molasses for baking or occasionally making a sweet teriyaki sauce, and even then, most recipes only call for a teaspoon or two.
Hot Sauce
Buy Frank’s Red Hot (or similar) in bulk for best results. Very shelf-stable!
Baking Soda
All brands are identical - buy the cheapest in bulk!
Baking Powder
Same goes for baking powder - all brand are identical so go hard in bulk.
Salt and Pepper
I use plain old iodized table salt and black peppercorns, so I buy the store brand in bulk, but if you’re into fancy salts (Celtic, pink, coarse, etc.), you may have to buy it more often and at a higher price.
Uncommon Spices: Nutmeg, Garam Masala, Lemon Pepper, Dill, Celery Seed, etc.
Everyone has spices they use far less often than the others, or in very small amounts. For these “rarely used” seasonings, you should only have to purchase them once a year if you play your cards right.
Dry Beans: Chickpeas, Black Beans, Navy Beans, Pinto Beans, etc.
A giant bulk bag will last you the entire year... unless you’re going hard with your Instant Pot. In that case, buy more often. But if you alternate between using dried and canned beans, you should be good.
PURCHASE ONCE EVERY 3-4 MONTHS
Nutritional Yeast
Level 10 Vegans all have a “nooch” jar that can hold about 2 lbs. of the cheesy goodness that is nutritional yeast. If you fill this jar up every 3 months or so, you should be set.
Tahini
Unless you’re making large quantities of tahini sauce or homemade hummus every week, a medium-sized jar of tahini should last you 3-4 months at the absolute minimum. Ocean State Job Lot always has the best price on this - typically $3.99.
Soy Sauce or Tamari
A medium/large bottle of low-sodium soy sauce or tamari (or liquid aminos for my Level 20 Expert Mode Vegans out there) should last you for quite some time.
Bulk Rice (Brown, Jasmine, Basmati, etc.)
Buy in bulk if you have room to store it. If you have access to an Asian supermarket (H-Mart, what’s up?!), you’ll find some pretty amazing rice deals there.
Bulk Wheat Pasta (Whole Grain)
Never pay more than $1.29 for a box of regular wheat pasta, and if possible, hold off until the store is giving them away for 89¢/box (Stop & Shop does this often) and go hard.
Flour (Whole Wheat)
I highly recommend buying a large bag of Bob’s Red Mill Whole Wheat Pastry Flour from Market Basket. It’ll last.
Sugar (Unrefined: Pure Cane, Coconut, etc.)
As Mary Poppins used to sing, “a spoonful of unrefined sugar makes your oatmeal taste way better.”
Canned Beans
I buy 6 cans at a time when on sale: Black, Cannellini, Chickpeas, etc. That way, you have a stockpile to pull from.
Raw Nuts: Almonds, Cashews, Walnuts
Honestly, buying raw nuts sucks because they’re never inexpensive - even when on sale. But they’re so worth it, and you won’t use them that often, so don’t stress too much.
Common Spices: Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Black Pepper, Cumin, Chili Powder, Sage, Rosemary, etc.
Just grab 2-3 $1 bottles of each at Ocean State Job Lot every 3-4 months.
Apple Sauce
I like to buy the prepackaged/sealed single-serve cups so that they don’t go bad; unsweetened, of course.
Fancy Grains and Healthy Nutritional Stuff
Farro, Israeli couscous, chickpea pasta, hemp hearts, chia seeds, soba noodles, flax seeds... all of that fun stuff you use rarely or in small amounts. Protip: Buy from Vitacost using eBates when they’re having a flash sale.
PURCHASE ONCE OR TWICE A MONTH
Tofu and Other “Proteins”
Never pay more than $2 per block. My local Asian grocery store, H-Mart, hooks me up with 99¢ blocks, so I buy five packages at a time, making my monthly tofu cost $5. Tempeh, seitan, and other fake meats are not really a part of my everyday diet, but if I see some on sale, I may grab 1-2 packages per month.
Frozen Vegetables: Peas, Stir Fry Medleys, Leeks, Greens, Broccoli, etc.
I never pay more than $1.59 for a bag of frozen vegetables, and I typically max out on 99¢ cent deals. Make sure to avoid frozen veggies that come in a “sauce” or are “pre-seasoned” - the only ingredient(s) listed should be the vegetable(s) itself - no salt, oil, or seasonings. Market Basket or Wegman’s are my go-to frozen veggie providers.
Frozen Fruit: Mango, Blueberries, Strawberries, Raspberries, etc.
This purchase becomes more frequent in the summer, as I crave cold smoothies more when it’s hot out. If you ever see a good deal that makes fresh fruit (or veggies) cheaper than their frozen counterparts, make sure to grab them and freeze them on your own!
Peanut Butter
Natural, no salt added - the only ingredient listed should be “Peanuts” or “Dry Roasted Peanuts.” Chunky or smooth - the choice is yours. Teddie’s or Trader Joe’s brand is always a safe bet.
Maple Syrup
100% pure - none of that high-fructose corn syrup garbage. Bonus points if it’s from Vermont to keep things local!
Dry Lentils: Red and Brown
ABBL: Always Be Buying Lentils. Just trust me. Cheapest, healthiest food on the planet. And so much iron!
Canned Tomatoes: Diced, Tomato Paste, Crushed, Sauce
When possible, buy the “No Salt Added” varieties.
Condiments: Ketchup, BBQ Sauce, Mustard, or whatever you use most often.
PURCHASE WEEKLY
Plant-Based Milk: Almond, Coconut, Soy, etc.
As a family that eats oatmeal and/or smoothies almost every day, we buy approx. one gallon per week.
Oats
Whatever whole-grain oats suit your fancy: rolled/old fashioned, quick, steel-cut, etc. Just make sure the only ingredient is oats: no added salt, sugar, or other random chemicals. We buy our oats in bulk at Whole Foods.
Bananas
Buy in 3 stages of ripeness if possible: green (not even close to being ripe), yellow (the way omnivores like them), and just starting to spot (almost vegan-ready: make sure to wait until they’re very brown and spotty!).
Fresh Vegetables: Bell Peppers, Mushrooms, Carrots, Celery, Greens, and whatever else you use most often.
Look out for sales or hit up the discount produce rack to try new veggies!)
Fresh Fruit: Apples, Oranges, Lemons, and whatever else you use most often.
Potatoes
A five lb. bag of potatoes should last you longer than a week, but I always at least pick up a few sweet potatoes during my weekly shopping trip.
Onions
Pick up a bag of white/yellow onions and maybe a red onion or two.
Garlic
And while you’re in that section, grab a head or two of bulk garlic.

It’s now 1:03 on Sunday afternoon. I am enjoying what most likely, will be, the last relaxing weekend of 2017. The calm before the Holiday Storm, if you will. Thanksgiving is this coming Thursday and I’ll be baking all Wednesday. We’ll be spending Thanksgiving at my sister’s brother-in-law’s home. They live only 20 minutes away from us and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone.
Among the desserts that was requested was a cheesecake recipe that I had made for years. My recipe was published in the St. Ignatius Loyola school fundraiser cookbook that the parents compiled. I can’t believe I still have this book–it was published in 1992 and this cheesecake recipe is a great one. It dates itself in that I don’t use margarine anymore! Here’s the recipe for you!
I miss the Racanelli ladies–they were a lot of fun. It’s kind of sad when you lose touch with people…
The book is literally falling apart but it’s my prized possession from my days as a NYC mom! This recipe makes THE best cheesecake ever. You can top with fruit too!!
Today I woke up a bit—well, somewhat feeling anxiety creeping into my bones and felt like spending the day in my bespoke pj’s.
Nah! I did NOT want to spend the day dressed like this–actually, I did want to.
But you know what? I can’t get like that so I did my makeup, got dressed and plopped some bobbed hair upon my head. I feel better already!
I dressed in a fun outfit–simple but with a mid-1960’s vibe! Let’s do the Swim or the Mashed Potato!!
Bonaparte and I decided to spend yesterday saving on spending!
Not only did the outlets have some big sales–but they had rather big balls too!!
J. Crew Factory sent me a coupon for 60% off items that were normally on sale for 50% off—so an extra ten percent was a great deal! We did some Christmas shopping and I walked away with a gray Teddie Sweater, the Factory version of my beloved J. Crew Tippi Sweater.
How pathetic am I? I sent a photo of this dress to Oona with the message “I wish you were a little girl again so I could dress you up like this” . Why isn’t that dress in MY size?
I have to say, Bonaparte is so nice to me. He called me “Mon Ange” yesterday because he said I looked like an angel.
What a man! Do angels wear fake hair piled atop their heads in a messy topknot? Perhaps it’s my halo! (And yes. I went out with my hair like that!)
Even when I look like something the cat dragged in, he tells me I look nice. That was just very sweet and unexpected! Others call me much worse!!
Seriously—I’m in a good place having gotten a head start on the Christmas décor in the house. I can concentrate on the food and what I can prepare and bake ahead of time.
Last night we started our dinner off with Escargot—the remainder from the order that was delivered last week.
Ohhhhh..these little snails were so delicious! I could have eaten two dozen!
We had steak with an anchovy cream sauce and I made Brussels Sprouts with cranberries and a balsamic reduction.
That anchovy sauce is life. L.I.F.E!!!
And this wine. At under $25, it was really good! It smelled like dirt and tasted very earthy–with a bit of a smokey taste. Me likey!
Bonaparte was so excited because on Friday I surprised him with his favorite dessert—Crème Caramel. But, I felt like having a bit of dessert myself. Naturally, I’m really trying to watch what I’m eating and I don’t normally have dessert. However, when I was at Produce Junction on Friday, I spotted Bosc Pears. They were 6 for two dollars. Now—I’m not a fan of pears unless they are cooked and I thought I might make a Pear Clafoutis for Bonaparte.
It’s amazing how he never tires of Creme Caramel!! NEVER!!!
Instead, I got selfish and decided to poach some of the pears. I love cooked pears! But I wanted to try something different. Since the cold weather is now in full-swing, I thought it would be a good idea to try some warm flavors in with the sweet. I added sliced ginger and cardamom for starters. The recipe is below.
I only used four of the six pears. I might cook the others and add to salad with bleu cheese!
Poaching away. Some turned right side up while cooking–see where I cored them?
Here’s the cardamom.
I store it in a plastic bottle. This is such a beautifully aromatic spice!
Can I just tell you that when the pears were poaching the scent of the ginger made the house smell so comfy—it was as though our home had turned into a giant bottle of ginger-ale! But the end result was terrific. BTW, I did not add cinnamon. I’m not a fan of cinnamon. At all. It’s way overused. And if you would like to try this recipe, by all means, add cinnamon to your liking!
My pretty pears. This was delicious…
The remainder is stored in this jar. I’m almost tempted to make a caramel cream but I’m seriously cutting down before the Holidays!
Back to Friday. My mind is always spinning when it comes to the appetizers that I’ll serve—especially during Christmas week. Oona will be here a few days before Christmas. I think Jake will too—he hasn’t let me know yet what day he will be arriving from L.A. I’m hoping Roman comes a few days before Christmas —but I don’t know if Fallon will be shooting through the Friday before. Or—he may come Christmas day with his dad. (Yes. I’ve invited my ex-husband and his girlfriend for Christmas dinner. It makes things easier since two of the three kids will be traveling pretty far—and everyone gets along so why not?)
Anyway, back to appetizers. I like to make things that are pretty-much non-fussy. For instance, Rillettes because they can be made in advance. With the bread that I make or with crackers, it’s a win-win situation. Plus, I can take a few moments to enjoy time with everyone before I go back into the kitchen to finish cooking.
Pâté is always a good choice and many of the pâtés I make can be time consuming. I want something easier. I spotted the last container of chicken liver at Wegmans and had an idea. I could make a chicken liver pâté! The recipe is below for you. I call it a “Faux-tay” simply because my food snobby Frenchman said that I didn’t serve it formed as a true pâté, in loaf form. Anyway……
Don’t forget to strain the chicken livers before cooking!
It was great! He loved it. This will be made in a few—actually three more weeks and stored in the fridge for Christmas Eve or whenever the family want’s it!
I like placing sage atop the finished product for that something extra..
The clarified butter really helps to seal the pate and it tastes good too!
This time of year really brings out the cook in me. I’m no pro but boy, cooking is just so calming for me.
As I write this, I have chili in the crockpot. I literally threw everything together. Here’s what I did.
Chili in the crockpot for tonight!
Atypical60 Chili!
1 pound ground beef; 1 can kidney beans; 2 cans Rotel Tomatoes with Habanero Peppers; 1 large onion; 2 cloves garlic; 3 jalapeno peppers; tomato paste; harissa; cumin; chili powder; salt; pepper
Chop the onion, jalapenos and garlic (I pulsed in the food processor—otherwise I would cry because of the onion). Put a little oil in a sauté pan and sweat all three till the onions are transparent. Then spoon them into the crock pot. Add a couple of tablespoons of tomato paste and the harissa into the onion mixture and stir (I used tubed tomato paste because it’s more economical).
HARISSA! I LOAD up on this when I’m in France because it’s dirt cheap–I can get two tubes for about one euro! Here is like four bucks a tube. If you can’t find it, don’t worry–the chili will be fine! This is just my secret ingredient that is no longer a secret!
Brown the meat in the same pan that the onions, etc. were cooked in. When browned, drain the grease of the meat. Then put the meat into the crock pot.
Open the cans of the Rotel tomatoes and pour contents into the crock pot. Add the kidney beans—bean liquor and all. Give it all a good stir.
Add the cumin (I add a lot!) and chili powder, salt and pepper. Cook it all in the crock pot for a few hours on low.
Serve over rice topped with sour cream and fresh cilantro.
I can tell you this much—this chili has a ton of heat from the habanero’s and the jalapenos. If you like a milder chili, get the regular Rotel tomatoes.
And that’s about it! Hope you like the recipes and I hope you are enjoying this calm weekend before the Holiday Storm!
In homage to my outfit today, I give you…James Brown from the movie “Ski Party”!!! Part of the entertainment of this clip is watching the extreme lack of rhythm that white people have–watch the clapping!
