AIKO'S BACK~ it's me, it's 🌼 anon. I've finally graduated and now I'm free from the clutches of school for a while so guess what? Brainrot that's right 🗣️ it's about Dottore this time which is unusual because I'm always insulting this man. Whoops 👩‍🦯
Now, I don't know about you but I've always imagined him to be a rather... Picky guy. Like, he's no perfectionist (my personal headcannon being he's a somewhat disorganized guy) but he always wants things done a certain way.
Handing the mic to you dear 🎙️
On a less aggressive note. You wouldn't believe how much I've missed reading your writing (I've been binging). They're amazing, and I love each and every one of them. So thank you for all your wonderful works, and for putting a smile on my face whilst warming my heart. Keep doing what you do <3 - 🌼
AHH HI 🌼 ANON!! Welcome back and congratulations on graduating 🥺 i hope you take some time to rest after that!! ❤️ And thank you, I'm very glad you've been enjoying my writings that much, so happy to make you smile <33 I'll take the mic from you now hehe, and oh, i completely agree.
Dottore is the kind of guy who is disorganized and organized at the same time. It looks like things are all over the place (and they are) but he just knows where his stuff is, mostly when it comes to papers and such. (His test subjects and the remains of his experiments are very carefully labeled.) Whenever a Fatui agent has to search for a document or something, they resolve themselves to be scolded by the Doctor because they know they're never finding it.
Dottore would scoff at their uselessness and then get to find it himself, producing it out of a place no one would have thought to check. But this is exactly why he loves you, his dear assistant. You understand his brain, how it does things, you know his strange habits and can find anything he asks for, whether it's under a pile of papers or a hidden bookshelf, or somehow you knew that little Zandy stole it to read... yes, the Fatuis really love you whenever you save their lives and direct them to wherever that mysterious document could be.
He also wants things to be done in a specific way - his way, as you've said. Again, this is why only you or his segments are entrusted with certain tasks... the others can't follow or understand his very Dottore-like instructions well, which admittedly frustrates him that he has to work with such idiots, but he grows used to it. But, although Dottore is set in his ways, the only person he's willing to listen to is you. Because, you are the only one who he respects and views as an equal, and he has to admit that you have some helpful ideas every now and then. That's why he loves you. <3

enjoy this little thing because i can't seem to get through writers block right now <3
1.9k words of primo and theo (oc) being cute about an old picture of him; a few drug mentions and a bit of suggestiveness under the cut but nothing too crazy hehe
Comfortable silence had blanketed the sunlit study for a while before either of them realized that the music had stopped playing. Another record had spun to its conclusion.
“Why don’t you put something on,” Primo said eventually, giving a slight gesture towards the general direction of the record player without taking his eyes off of his book.
It was only polite of him to offer, Theo thought, since he had chosen the last few. She yawned deeply as she sat up off of the chaise lounge and set her own book aside. Flipping through the illustration books of old botanical studies had been interesting at first, but now she was glad for something else to put her mind to.
She stood and wiggled from side to side to stretch out her back, then padded over the soft rug in her stocking feet over to the far wall where the turntable and speakers were. Primo had a fairly modest system- not that she really knew much about them anyways- but she thought his collection of music was rather impressive. The bookshelf next to the player supported multiple wire racks of records, each one stuffed to the brim. It was always a treat to discover what he might have hidden amongst the classics.
The sunlight warmed the floor in front of the shelf, where she plopped down criss-cross and began to ghost her fingertips along the ridges of the record sleeves. “Anything in particular?” she asked him, and he answered with a simple hum from his place in the wingback chair.
“Your choice, cara mia.”
Satanas, that narrowed things down. There was so much to choose from… she began to thumb out a couple at a time, sliding them down to get a glimpse at the covers. Some she knew by sight alone. A few familiar covers made her smile to herself- they had almost worn out Rumours, mostly thanks to her. His beloved collection of Tina Turner’s discography was neatly organized in its own section, in the rack that she preferred to peruse; where ABBA and Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles were just a few among some of her frequent picks.
The other shelf was a trip to the wide expanse of hard rock spanning the decades, and from the dawning era of metal; Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Blue Oyster Cult… just a sampling among countless other artists, many she wasn’t quite as familiar with. Hmmm… maybe she ought to close her eyes and just pick one.
She did, trusting her intuition as she smoothed her fingers over the thin spines, and out came one of her favorites. She gave a little huff, though; she didn’t think he would really be in the mood for it today.
“How about Foreigner?”
He was quiet for a long moment- must have been deliberating- and then he answered somewhat nonchalantly. “Mmm, maybe not.”
She was right. So much for her choice. With a little private roll of her eyes she put the record back on the rack and put her intuition to another test.
Ah, that was better- a Pink Floyd album seemed a much more fitting soundtrack for this lazy, comfortable afternoon they were sharing. When she slipped the record from its well-loved sleeve, something happened to catch her eye; a corner of something, maybe a note, had almost come out with it. No reason to stifle her curiosity…
Oh, it wasn’t a note, it was an old photo. She set the record and its cover down beside her on the floor and flipped over the photo; it was hardly bigger than an index card, and the image quality wasn’t the clearest, but the subject matter instantly made her stomach flip in surprise.
“Hey, ah…” she started, entranced by what she was looking at. “What were you up to in seventy-three?”
From behind her she heard him turn a page slowly before he answered, a little facetiously. “Hmm… a lot of sex and drugs, I imagine.”
Satanas in fucking hell, she could imagine, too. In the picture he absolutely looked like a god of the former and someone who knew his way around the latter. He must have been in his late twenties, she calculated quickly, and she found herself stroking her fingertips over the papery surface of the photo as she stared down at it.
“Why do you ask?”
“Oh, uh… just…” she couldn’t keep her train of thought on the right track. Holy fuck. She had wondered about what he might have looked like as a young man, and she had some good guesses, but to see it for herself like this was so exciting that she could feel her face starting to flush warm. Whoever took the picture must have caught him at an interesting time, because his expression looked a little sour. But his face, fresh and bare of any paint, was unspeakably handsome- his angular jaw, strong nose, and piercing eyes set under his brow made her heart flitter even now. His skin looked so youthful and more tanned here- she thought she could even notice the shade of a few freckles across the bridge of his nose- and he seemed to glow in the bright sun, maybe from sweat.
And if that wasn’t enough to draw her attention, then his outfit had captured it. A silver earring sparkled in his earlobe, since his long, wild blonde hair had been tucked behind his ear on that side. A cropped, sleeveless shirt hardly concealed his lean arms crossed over his chest, where he dangled a joint lazily between his fingers and a hairtie clung to his wrist. Or his midriff, where a trail of light hair down his belly caught the sun and led the eye to the low rise of his red athletic shorts, which… left absolutely nothing at all to the imagination. Lucifer almighty.
“Um,” she managed finally, enraptured with the image of him. “Do you still own these?”
“Own what?” he questioned, and now with the record momentarily forgotten she got up to bring the photo over to him.
As she approached he flicked his mismatched gaze up to her, and noticing the telltale color dusting her cheeks, he put his book down. She could only smile shyly as she handed it over to him.
He looked at it for a while as recognition sprawled slowly over his painted features, and eventually his wrinkles creased deeply with a knowing smile. “Where did you find this?”
“In the Dark Side sleeve.”
“Ah.” She could tell that he seemed amused, both at the memory the picture stirred and at her reaction to it. “Yes, that makes sense. Terzo took this,” he explained. “I remember he was so insistent. He was in quite a phase with that camera of his.”
“Oh, yeah?” That piqued her interest- maybe that meant there were other pictures like this one, hidden away in Papa Terzo’s office in a forgotten photo album or dusty storage box… maybe she could sweet-talk someone into getting a glimpse at them, a peek into the past where her amato was experiencing life as a young man. A very, very attractive young man.
But for now she was happy to soak up the image of him in this one; sweating away the heat of some long-passed summer, in shorts that would make even a most devout sinner blush and glance away. What that would make her, she couldn’t say.
He kept smiling, taking in the details of the old photo before finally holding it back out for her to take. “He would tell you I made a terrible subject. But, in my defense, he always picked the worst moments. I believe I had just finished repairing something here, I don’t recall what… look, you can see how filthy my hands were.”
She took the photo again and sure enough, his hands were indeed dark and smudged with the remnants of whatever work he had been doing. She hadn’t even noticed at first glance- an understandable miss, considering what other details there were to admire.
“Satanas,” she finally murmured to herself. “You were so…”
How exactly could she describe him? It was like seeing him at his truest; unhindered here by the slow marching of time. This was the man she knew, unfiltered by age or responsibilities or the hardships she knew he had experienced as his life had gone on- and perhaps much more uninhibited in his self-expression. It only added another level, formed another facet of her attraction to him. In the simplest of terms- he was so fucking hot. Holy shit. She thought she could stare at this forever. Maybe he’d let her keep it to put on her bedside table.
He waited patiently for her to come to her conclusion, and when she didn’t he let out a deep chuckle. “Oh, Theo.”
“Seriously,” she insisted. “I… I think you should let me see the rest of Terzo’s pictures.”
That really made him chuckle then. “Be careful what you wish for.”
“The ones of you,” she said with a little giggle of her own, and now she moved closer to sit slightly against the arm of his chair.
“Maybe one of these days. We can take a little trip down memory lane, yes?”
“I’d like to,” she answered, smoothing her thumb carefully over the photo she still studied thoroughly. “I really like seeing you like this.”
“Young?”
“Well, yeah, but also just… yourself.” She was trying to convey her meaning- how she truly loved learning about his life as himself, as Primo, not just as Papa, and seeing him for who he really was… she wasn’t quite so articulate, but he got the jist. His hand came to slide around her back, settling at her hip, and she let her hand rest against his. The creases and wrinkles in his skin were so pleasant to trace with her fingertips, and she did so absentmindedly.
“You flatter me, dolcezza.”
“Oh, come on. You look amazing. And you still do,” she continued, turning to smile down at him, and when she noticed his eyes softening she felt her own heart do the same.
“I’ve changed a bit.”
“Well, yeah. Haven’t we had this conversation already?” She quirked her brow at him. “Something about aging, and wine…?”
He smiled again, that magnetic smile that even when hidden under layers of dark paints could light her up with excitement and affection. “Oh, yes, you and your metaphors.”
“Oh, pfft. You know I mean it.”
“I do know.” His hand, settled against her hip, squeezed softly around her flesh there. “And I appreciate it very much. You are awfully sweet to me.”
She felt fresh warmth blooming in her cheeks, and to that she didn’t know what exactly to say, so she just squeezed his hand. They sat like that for a few moments- the room still blanketed in that comfortable silence, the honey-gold sunlight still illuminating the space- until she glanced back down at the photo one more time, and couldn’t help but smile.
“You didn’t answer my question.”
“Mm?”
“Do you still have these?”
He looked slightly puzzled at her, until he realized exactly what she was referring to, and now he really laughed.
“Theodora.”
“What? I just want to know.”
“Even if I did,” he countered, rumbling with deep laughter, “I doubt they would fit.”
“I mean... we could at least just see if they do.”
“Mm. Certainly you have no ulterior motive.”
She couldn’t defend herself against that, and he knew it. At her slightly sheepish-looking smile, he laughed again and took her gently to pull her down for a kiss.

no mistakes, only happy (magical) accidents
CW: none!
Tumblr media
hehe hello, nonnie! you are so nice and it’s always a joy to have you stop by even if we’ve only exchanged a few messages <3 this was getting kinda long so I stopped it before it got to making things official BUT. maybe when i’m feeling up to it i’ll write a part 2. I do hope you don’t mind! it wasn’t boring at all! i get burnout really easy so i had to keep it to hc but this would make a really nice fic! (i also went a biiit off script but what can i say, i got a specific inspiration <3)
Tumblr media
Solomon
Despite being banished and the bad blood he has with the heads of the institution, Solomon still finds himself at the Sorcerer's Society. Frequently.
Sometimes he is invited, his unrivaled knowledge and experience needed in some stuffy decision making progress. Others, he just slips in, sometimes through the front door and sometimes through more deceitful ways. All he does is observe, occasionally borrowing a specific book or artifact. The people in charge know about this, but so long as he returns the items unscathed and in a timely manner, they turn a blind eye. Best not to cause a ruckus where there doesn't need to be one.
Thanks to this little system, Solomon doesn't normally interact with any of the people he comes across. On the occasions he is recognized, there's always some awkward, half-baked attempt at confrontation, so he keeps to himself and only ever gets what he needs.
He's tucked in a shadowy corner of one of the libraries, searching for a book, when he hears it. Two witches whispering about a strange increase in magic in their area.
"For that long? Have you gone to check it out?"
"No, I never have the time. I just hope it isn't something dangerous."
"Well, does it feel dangerous?"
"No, but it is...strong."
"So you're just going to leave it for someone else to take care of?"
"When you hear a wolf's howl, do you head directly towards it?" As the two head out, Solomon hides himself further behind the bookshelf. He doesn't know exactly who the witches are, but he does know about where they're from, and that's all he needs.
Fun! He’s been looking into magical anomalies in the human realm recently!
so he’s checking out the area those witches are from, not really sure he knows what he’s looking for, but looking all the same. there is definitely a magical pull, but it feels.....off. he’s expecting something natural, like a small, hidden waterfall with waters that can be used for potions that elongate the natural lifespan, or a cave with an endless supply of crystals that can be used to double enchantment strength with half the effort.
but then he finds you instead after you managed to cause a small implosion in a cavern he was standing right next to but hadn’t noticed. if he hadn’t heard your shriek, he wouldn’t have bothered helping clear the rubble.
but he did hear you, and he pulled you out of the cave, watching you gracelessly fall on the grass and pat your sides to check for your belongings.
now, sometimes there’s a certain energy between human magic wielders that is just palpable. it isn’t a fool-proof way to know who can practice magic, but especially strong sorcerers can pick up on them more easily and especially unwieldy or inexperienced ones are often easier to pick up on. Solomon seems to be the former, and you...
He doesn’t mean to sound haughty, but he can’t help but ask who taught you how to cast your spells and WHAT DO YOU MEAN you’re using WHICH flowers for your spells?
Maybe it’s your pride, but your indignant “well what would YOU do?” was not meant to turn into a regular thing.
Hey, when you’re self-taught you tend to take a lot of shortcuts. And Solomon isn’t normally the type to just pick up random apprentices off the street, but he falls into teaching so easily. So maybe that day you spend the rest of it revising your spellcasting tactics, and maybe he finally leaves with an invitation to visit. And maybe he visits sooner than you’d expect.
You’re definitely not complaining, though. It’s good to not feel so alone in your magic and have a second head to bounce ideas off of. Plus, you’ve only grown more efficient with his help!! You hope the tea and meals you provide him with is payment enough.
Sometimes, he doesn’t just visit for a day. Sometimes he’s there for a few days, teaching you a few spells and stocking up on potions you’ve made that you offer him, glad for the company. he doesn’t visit every week - sometimes, it’s months between the times you see each other, but each time you fall into an easy rhythm and it’s nice!
You tell him about the area you live in, different local specialties that really enhance the ability of your potions and spells, and he tells you about his adventures throughout his life. there’s never a moment where you don’t know what to say - and everything he has to say is so interesting!
probably the most emotional moment you two have had is when you brought up extending your life. he went stiff, and started asking twenty questions before stumbling over his words and asking none of them. you asked him what was wrong, and he didn’t answer.
instead, he gave you the typical talk you’d expect - “are you willing to watch your friends and loved ones die? to watch humanity move on without you?” - and you answer cautiously like “yeah, and also this potion should theoretically only give me a few extra decades”
he sighs, and urges you that if you must live longer, never fall for the trap of immortality. he only gives you half-sentences that don’t make sense, but you promise him you wont anyway.
“be careful. the human mind can barely take what it was naturally given.”
he leaves solid answers unspoken, but you can add it all up.
and after that, the two of you just seem. closer? there’s something about opening up about your trauma that really brings two people together
so you do end up extending your lifespan, though not by much - you still aren’t powerful enough to give yourself over 150 years AT BEST, but you and Solomon stay in touch. and you both keep getting stronger.
eventually, though, it’s time to step into the magical world and start showing up places with him. You aren’t a unit, but you travel like one, and people start to notice.
at first, you’re asked all the time if you’re his apprentice, and you laugh it off and say “no, i just ask a lot of questions.” then you get the logical next step - “oh, are you two dating?”
it took you that long to notice that you had a crush MC good job
every time someone asks about it, you get flustered without a doubt. Solomon takes it in stride, which, ouch, but you sort of withdraw and your face feels hot. So it really bothers Solomon when people ask because you’re out of commission for a while and the two of you are pals :( you do stuff together on purpose
but now that it’s on your MIND you can’t SHAKE the idea of dating him.....you already know him so well....he’s spent long periods of time at your place.....you work well together......you wouldn’t mind kissing him......oh damn
it’s one of those “everybody can see it except for him” situations, and you start overthinking it. big time. it doesn’t help that you were sort of a recluse before he came along so what experience do you have with it??
none. the answer is none. and boy does it show when you get to the point where you can barely have a full conversation without turning red because your thoughts betrayed you AGAIN.
you’re really regretting that life-elongating potion, huh, MC?

Part 2
Now this one... It’s a bit difficult to make a relationship believable, honest, not rushed and beautiful in 5 parts, but it’s the challenge! I won’t spoil anything, but I like writing fluff, and this fic is the perfect excuse for an overdose of it hehe
-----------------------------------------
If the outside of the house had seemed particularly old and invaded by plants, the inside of the small cottage-like house was modern, with touches of colors everywhere. Old and new objects shared the shelves, silly magazines and philosophical books scattered on the small coffee table in the main room. The entrance, the living room and what seemed to be the start of the kitchen were harboring persian carpets, intricate and deep shapes almost hypnotic.
Nature was not just an outside thing, with a pot of roses on a dresser, some small ferns hiding an old plushie, and more box trees scattered here and there, next to modern lamps.
It felt homey, comfortable. Lived-in. Nothing like Ichigo’s sad apartment, that he never really cared to decorate.
Orihime Inoue sat on her grey sofa, the soft red and white check plaid to her side, and patiently waited for Ichigo to sit down. The young man certainly didn’t make her wait, sitting in what seemed to be a Chesterfield-like armchair. The cushions were a great help soothing his back pains.
“Alright, um, Miss Inoue I only need you to tell me what happened at the bakery. Or anything you can remember.” He clicked his pen to life, taking a notepad from his vest pocket. Orihime seemed to frown a little.
“I thought you said you had already read a report on this?”
“I did, but only the official parts : who were the victims, what age they were and what were the damages. Knowing what you saw could greatly help my colleagues on the field.”
She nodded in understanding, hair bouncing on her shoulders, before getting more comfortable in her seat.
“I was doing my normal and daily routine : waking up, washing up and going for a walk before heading to the bakery. Not many people are there at the time, which was around 7 if I’m not mistaken.” Ichigo nodded, confirming silently.
“I arrived and waited behind Miss Parker. We were chatting and it was her turn before I heard a scream behind me. I turned around and ran to the place I thought it came from, but before I could do anything… It, it exploded. And the owners died, Miss Parker is wounded, I heard.” Her grey eyes blinked rapidly, as if to stop tears from falling. Ichigo awkwardly shifted, placing his pen and notepad back in his pocket before managing to get a clean and unused tissue to her.
“I’m sorry you had to go through all that, Miss Inoue. If it can make you feel better, I know none of the injured are in critical conditions now. Even older customers like Miss Parker will be fine.”
Orihime wiped a tiny tear off her eyes quickly, and Ichigo remarked with awe she was not wearing any kind of makeup. This woman was beautiful like that while doing nothing with her face… He cleared his throat to see her nod, taking a shaky breath before smiling.
“I hope the injured will be alright. And that the culprit will be caught.”
The steel in her eyes hardened, sending a chill down Ichigo’s spine. He had seen harsh looks, murderous ones and angered glares, but Orihime’s was by far the scariest. The man peeled his hand away.
“We will work hard for it. And thanks to your testimony, the investigation will be easier. Hopefully.”
She chuckled at the last word, and by all the goddamn beautiful things on this earth, he swore he was hearing some kind of divine bells. Like an angelic sound coming to bless his ears. He was not even going to think about how her face had crunched up at her laughter. The policeman scratched the back of his head quickly, nervously looking around.
He heard her stand up and tried his best not to follow her moving around in her dark jeans and pink oversized shirt.
“Would you like anything to drink? Or eat?”
Ichigo managed to not choke on air at the ask, because then his fear of being viewed as unprofessional would have come true.
“Um, yes, some coffee please.” His voice was shaky and he internally hit himself for being stupidly crushing over the girl he didn’t know anything about. Except that she was the victim of an explosion that had occured yesterday morning and he was there for WORK.
“Alright. Make yourself comfortable, Mister Officer.”
And now, Ichigo turned crimson, heart going too fast, but thankfully she was out of sight, he told himself, not knowing she was the same kind of absolutely wrecked by the other.
.
.
.
After the first talk in Orihime’s wonderful home, Ichigo had hardly let her out of his sight, only leaving her side to go to his apartment and gather some new clothes. Because, yes, as weird and delightful as it was, he was guarding the young woman day and night now.
Which meant being near her as long as the investigation was rolling.
According to Orihime, nothing or no one was running after her in particular : she didn’t have any enemies, nor was her work important enough for someone to physically act against her. In front of her beautiful grey eyes, Ichigo had decided to trust her, the honesty and sincerity shining bright through him.
Still, it didn’t explain why certain things happened.
One morning, Orihime found one of her shoes, who was always tidily placed near the other in the entrance hall, on a bookshelf, dust slowly growing on it. She had giggled a “silly me”, but the young police officer frowned : there was nothing silly about that.
Another time, a vase she loved had been buried in her garden, the only way to see where it was hidden being the stray cat that often visited the normally calm house scratching the ground curiously.
“You’re thinking too much of it! Really, sometimes I don’t remember where or why I put stuff in weird places.”
Her words did little to soothe him, and only her gentle hand on his arm got his mind out of his working gutter. Ichigo felt his skin react before his muscles, his face turning vermillion and his arm longing for more. More of her, more of those innocent stares and vibrant smiles.
The orange-haired scratched the back of his neck rapidly, scanning the room quickly before nodding, a timid smile on his lips.
“I-I guess…”
Orihime smiled again, even brighter, and turned her head to look at the clock, the auburn mass of hair sending a wave of mouth watering strawberry shampoo. Early afternoon, the sun was shining and that meant one thing to her : gardening.
He suspected her to work her actual job at night, when he was sleeping deeply in his own room, so Ichigo could not interrupt her, or sneak a look at confidential documents. Alone in her room, one light shining on the young woman while her eyebrows were furrowed in concentration, the time when her hyperactive brain could entirely focus on whatever an astrophysicist worked on.
The two walked out of the house, one with baggy clothes she wasn’t afraid to ruin with grass, dirt and others, while the other kept his pastel yellow t-shirt with his jeans, the best Ichigo could do against the hot weather of the late summer. Orihime immediately tended to the flowers, carefully handling them, talking to them like she would to old friends, making jokes to Ichigo. It was as if the two were friends since childhood, the discussions so easy it would scare the man.
“Do you believe in other lives, Officer Kurosaki?”
“Hm? Oh, well, I’m not much in religion, so I would say no.”
Her face shivered with a giggle, batting her hand as if to call him silly. He tilted his own head to the side.
“I meant… Other lifetimes. I used to not really think about it, but, since a few months ago, after reuniting with a long-lost friend, I started believing. And now..” Her eyes batted to the sides, probably looking for her gardening kit.
“Now… I start to believe that you and I might just have known each other in another life. A simpler one, with no-one to hurt good people while young and old people enjoy their lives.”
Head down, fingers playing with the stem of a voluminous pink rose. The sun radiating on their backs, hiding their reddening selves.
How much either one of them wished for that.

05. FAMILY FEUD
surprise, bitches. bet you thought you’d seen the last of me. why do i update my fic always a month apart. sorry!! i’m always working on it, i just write really long chapters... anyways, here is chapter five of my bella as a vampire and edward as a human fanfic inspired by an au that @bellasredchevy posted. you can read the new chapter on AO3 or here. i post updates on AO3 or on tumblr using the #equinoxjw tag.
i've incorporated some quotes from midnight sun because obviously this is still something of a parallel to midnight sun & i wanted to stay true to some of the reactions. also, you may recognize a little blurb imbedded here that i've written before about the bookshelf hehe. hope yall enjoy ♡♡♡
The weight of the battle I was fighting within myself was beginning to surpass the previous toll it’d taken on me. Every moment since I met Edward, it seemed I was falling further down into an abyss that I couldn’t climb out of, and every time I felt like maybe I’d found my grip, I only fell further. Again, I was frustrated as I sat outside Edward’s house in Carlisle’s Mercedes, watching the hazy, obscure sun slip further away behind the blackened clouds, leaving me shrouded in the darkness of a midday storm and the cover of pouring rain. I felt partially guilty for not returning Carlisle’s car. He wouldn’t mind running home, but Esme might not be too pleased about the puddles his drenched clothing would leave on her newly installed flooring. Although after today, it might not matter anymore.
I wondered what I’d return home to. Would they have already finished packing up our belongings? Would they be waiting to confront me about the consequences of my actions? Carlisle was forgiving, but would the rest of my family be?
For those reasons, I wasn’t ready to return home yet. But mostly, I was hesitant to drive away because I knew the moment my tires left Edward’s street would be the moment I’d be leaving him behind in Forks. I felt unprepared for the finality of such a moment.
When I heard the soft purr of an engine turning onto the street around one in the afternoon, I sighed, shifting the car into drive and moving forward to the end of the road in case it was Edward’s father returning home. I watched in my rearview mirror as the silver vehicle confirmed my suspicions by pulling into Edward’s driveway. Although the darkness of the thunderstorm’s gloom brewing in the clouds did little to obscure my eyesight, the torrent of rain pounding down relentlessly onto the green earth was too thick for even my eyes to catch a good glimpse of his face.
I could stay and listen – hear the voice of his father and compare it to the quality of Edward’s low, soft timbre, see if Edward’s sincerity in sticking to my version of events was genuine, check if he was truly as alright as he insisted – but maybe I was only looking for reasons to avoid heading home. Or maybe I was just being unforgivably invasive.
I glanced at the digital clock. 1:05. If they had stayed in their classes after the accident, there was still another hour and forty minutes before my siblings would be released from school. If they went home early, then Carlisle still wouldn’t be home for another two hours and twenty five minutes. I decided I’d rather not be there without Carlisle, so I lifted my foot off the break, slammed on the gas, and headed for Port Angeles before I realized where I was going.
As I left Forks behind me, the rain softened to a more consoling pitter patter on the roof of the car, and the clouds, although still grey, were lighter, hinting at the hidden sun. I made it to Port Angeles in under half an hour, luckily finding the roads to be mostly empty.
I drove at an appropriate speed once I reached the city. It was surprisingly beautiful scenery for such a disastrous day. It had snowed the night before here as well, but the melted snow hadn’t refrozen into ice. Instead, the tops of the buildings were covered in a thin layer of fluffy white snowflakes. The clouds above were thick enough to conceal me from the sun but held no implications of oncoming rain.
I located a parking spot near my favorite old brick building and paid the meter for the next few hours. The air was even more wintry here than in Forks as the harbor air brought in fresh, freezing ocean spray. There was a bookstore I liked to go to here in Port Angeles. Even as a child, Forks didn’t have an adequate library or bookstore to satiate my needs. My previous grievances with the rainforest of a city aside, there was always the silver lining of the bookstore.
If there was one thing that I looked forward to when arriving in the otherwise detestable small town of Forks in the rainy state of Washington, it was returning to the familiar mahogany of the sturdy bookshelf in the tiny living room of Charlie’s small, two-story house. It had been a gift – a homecoming gesture – in hopes to put me in better spirits when I was forced to spend my summers with my father. He knew how I had disliked his gloomy town just as my mother had. A friend from the reservation, Billy Black’s, young, cheerful son built the bookshelf himself. Billy had dismissed Charlie’s offers to pay his son for the service, insisting he accept it as a present in return for all the nights Billy stole away to the Swan Residence (Swan, the last name I held as a human) to watch the game on Charlie’s much larger – though not by much – television screen. When he hadn’t been looking, Charlie slipped a small wad of cash to Billy’s kid who excitedly accepted it, eager to save for some other projects.
Over time, the book shelf became a home for some of my favorite classic novels. On his days off, when his friend Harry Clearwater was unavailable for a fishing trip, he’d picked up books of all kinds, hoping I would find at least one I liked in the overflowing collection. The bookshelf was stuffed with paperbacks and hardbacks, lining each ledge edge to edge with books piling horizontally on top of the other books as space began to run out. It was a gesture that moved me in ways I was unused to and ways I couldn’t find the words to express.
When I was in town, Charlie drove me to some of the larger cities surrounding his small town and waited patiently as I perused the shelves of second-hand book stores. Smart as he was, he wasn’t a very articulate man, struggling to convey the depth of his emotions through words. But something in his eyes betrayed the way his heart overflowed with pride and adoration watching his small, gangly daughter enter into a world of her own as she searched for her next favorite story to add to their beloved bookshelf. It was a look I caught that sometimes made me feel embarrassed and shy by the profundity of the love in it, but now a look that I’d always remember. A look that would always make my unbeating heart feel somehow full and empty at the same time. Intense feelings of love and sadness for what I’d once had and since lost. This bookstore was our favorite, and therefore, it would always be my favorite. It still held the aged charm of the past, but they made some modern improvements in desperation for relevance today. I’d made sure to keep the store open with anonymous donations. Too many independent bookstores suffered in such a competitive, unfair market full of large online distributors.
I listened to the familiar hum of the glowing red neon sign in the window as I reached for the door. A bell above let out a peal of rings as I entered, and the clerk behind the wooden counter looked up beneath her large glasses. Her skin was deeply tan with olive undertones and her dark hair was cropped in a perfect line above her shoulders. Her eyes registered shock upon seeing my face, her heart rate picked up, and she stuttered over her words. “W-welcome!”
“Thank you,” I smiled softly, though finding the politeness to be difficult today. I didn’t want to come across rude or threatening, but feigning anything resembling joy was especially exhausting. I kept my voice gentle and even so as not to alarm the woman.
“Let me know if you need any help!” She called after me as I passed the counter, heading deeper into the store.
The shop was unpopulated at this time of day. Only a few people loitered here and there examining the shelves or curled up on loveseats with hot coffee cups to recover from the chill of the outdoors.
I crossed over the entirety of the first floor, finding the concealed narrow staircase that led to the upstairs. Tasting the air, I could tell there was nobody immediately near me, so I flew up the staircase at a more reasonable speed though I was in no hurry. The second floor was a brown labyrinth, the bookshelves placed in a way to create an intimate maze with countless little crevices to slip into and hide away from the rest of the world. Hardbacks and paperbacks piled the shelves and walls from the floor to the ceiling. The air was filled with the scents of crispy paper, aged ink, and the sweet, musky smell of older books. The lighting was warm reddish-orange, dull, and not ideal for reading despite the setting, but a miscellaneous mélange of lamps in all shapes and sizes embellished the spaces tucked between the bookcases, generating enough brightness to read in tiny, personal pools of light.
I weaved a path through the maze until I reached a dead-end corner with a single, wine-colored armchair in a faded leather. An ornate wooden plaque spray painted gold with eroded edges was drilled into the shelf behind the chair, the words “For Charlie” engraved into the pallet. Well, my donations were mostly anonymous.
No matter how many times I rounded this corner, every time my eyes fell on the empty chair hit me like a wrecking ball with nearly unmanageable grief. Any attempt to decipher the thoughts that came with this always led me to simplistic statements because that was all that I could ever handle. It was too much emptiness, too much numbness, too much complexity. It was always simply too much. And that was about all the conclusions I could come to no matter how much gentleness and coaxing Esme, Rosalie, Alice, Jasper, Emmett, and Carlisle comforted me with. It was always easier to push away the thought, to avoid thinking too much than to acknowledge the hole in my chest. Some days I almost forget, and some days it becomes seemingly ever present. It was always easier to ignore the gravity of the grief.
But in this life with the absoluteness of what we are, all we can do is to go on. One next step at a time. As much as I felt so much stronger and accustomed to this life, there was no denying the simple truth – there is so much loss in immortality.
I sighed. Even with all of our physical resilience, the extremities of our emotions in this form was enough to be tiring. I took steps forward and turned to sink into the chair, feeling very small. Looking out at the warmth of the bookcases and the endless array of novels, I thought of what it would be like to be Charlie sitting here, watching his awkward daughter run her finger along all the spines or disappear into the maze only to be found on the floor somewhere surrounded by piles of books.
Sometimes being here I could feel the ghost of Charlie’s love. The intensity that he couldn’t quite always communicate and that I didn’t always understand the extent of. But here, I could feel it. And I felt the same love for him in return. I missed him. His thick mustache, the sudden youthfulness in his warm, brown eyes when he smiled, the endearing crinkles that reminded me of his age. The coffee rings on the table, and the snow chains on my tires. The flush of red under his translucent skin when he was angry or embarrassed. Just like how my skin had been. Like father, like daughter.
I wondered what he’d think of my life now, and what he’d think of what I’d done today. Knowing the circumstances of the secrets I was meant to keep, would he have thought I’d done the right thing as Carlisle had? Or would he have thought I interfered and placed my siblings at risk like the rest of my family might think? I think that despite the consequences, he would have said something like, “you did the right thing, kid.” And maybe he’d even uncomfortably ask me about whether or not this boy was someone he should be keeping his eye on and would be immensely relieved when I reassured him that the answer was no. The thought almost made me smile. So then, I couldn’t bring myself to regret my decisions, and I wouldn’t allow myself to.
I sat there in the weathered leather of the chair for some time, listening to the subtle dragging of pages sliding off of shelves, the whoosh of air and the crispy rustle of paper as someone turned a page, the heaviness of footsteps on dead pieces of floorboard, the twinkle of the bell above the front door, and the whisper of the frozen wind rushing inside. After an hour, I stirred, rising from Charlie’s chair to trace my finger along the edges of the shelves, the action stirring up some dust particles to leap into the air like dandelion seeds, the warm light catching them in astonishing ways as they floated along. I left my little nook briefly to find the right section that would hold the book I was suddenly searching for.
When I located it, I plucked the gently used novel off the shelf, vowing to officially mend my own copy at home since it was the same story that Emmett had destroyed the morning of the first day I saw Edward.
I returned to the armchair, once again sinking down into the burgundy, and flipped through the aged pages until I found the place I left off at.
I’d have read until closing time, but eventually something in the unreliability of initial appearances in Pride and Prejudice began to bother me in a way that it never had before. I gave up on the book and instead sat unthinking – or attempting to, at least– quietly for a few hours.
Again, I longed to sleep. I’d never needed an escape as much as I did now as my mind was becoming too tiring a place to consciously be.
After some time, I heard creaky footsteps on the ancient wood up the stairs and the jingling sound of keys hitting each other. I waited patiently as they approached, imagining where exactly they may be in the labyrinth as they turned corners and hesitated to quietly shove stray books back onto shelves. They drew closer, closing in the distance between them and my little nook, finally rounding the corner.
“Oh!” The clerk from downstairs gasped in surprise, dropping the book in her hand. I stopped myself from saving it to not startle her any further with sudden movements, allowing it to clatter noisily to the floor.
“I’m sorry,” I murmured, only then rising from the chair to lean down and collect the novel after an appropriate amount of reaction time. “I didn’t mean to scare you.”
The clerk’s heart boomed loudly in her chest. “No, no, it’s alright!” She laughed breathlessly, a hand fluttering to her heart. “I just didn’t think anyone else was here... We’re, uh, sorry, we’re closed!”
“Oh, I’m sorry again,” I laughed softly as well to relax her, extending my hand to offer her the book she’d dropped. “I must have lost track of time.”
“That’s okay! It happens more often than you think...” she laughed again, her heart rate slowing down to a more regular place, though now that she recovered from the shock, her face was mesmerized by the oddness of my jarringly perfect appearance.
“I’ll leave now,” I smiled politely, pushing the book forward to her hand, careful not to touch her skin. Without processing, she took hold of the book. As I began to pass her, she clumsily turned.
“Oh, uh, wait! I’ll unlock the door to let you out!”
I allowed her to pass me up and leisurely followed her through the maze down the stairs. Her blood had a sweet smell, but it was still unappealing in comparison to Edward’s.
Once we’d reached the door, I could see how much time had passed whilst I hadn’t been paying attention. Through the large windows, night had fallen in a blackened cloak over the port city.
“Here we are,” she shyly chirped in a very intentionally favorable tone – something she probably reserved for customer service – and fiddled with the keys. Her hands shook slightly, and I felt guilty for how it must feel to have her back turned to a predator. Of course, she couldn’t know the difference, but her body recognized the threat. Finally, once she’d found the right key, she jimmied the rusty metal into the lock – missing the narrow fissure twice at first – and opened the door.
“Sorry about that. Thank you so much for coming,” she turned, gesturing with a shaky hand towards the outside world. The bitter wind blew in through the opening, making her shiver.
“Thank you,” I smiled again for her sake. Her eyes were peculiarly light compared to the rest of her features, making them extremely prominent. They were lighter and more hazel, yet the shade of green made me think of Edward again. I sighed. “Have a good night.”
I stepped out into the darkened street, looking down at the strange way the red light from the neon sign in the window washed over and illuminated my skin. Tiny bugs flew around the street lamps up above, casting irregularly moving shadows on the frozen sidewalk.
The heavy door shut loudly behind me, and she clicked the lock. It was unusually quiet, though that could be due to it being a weeknight. The bulbs in the streetlamps hummed and the bugs buzzed in response.
I strolled along the sidewalk, taking my time before returning to Carlisle’s car. I should have paid the meter more generously. It expired two hours ago. I’d received a parking ticket. Oops.
I removed the frozen slip of paper and unlocked the car, sliding into the driver’s seat. I had no desire to drive fast at first, deciding to return home at the speed limit. After about forty minutes, suddenly the anticipation to get the confrontation out of the way overcame me, and I drove 200 miles per hour the rest of the way home. Within minutes, I was turning onto the miles-long driveway.
As I raced for the garage, I listened for any movement from the bright house. There was none. I wondered how long they’d been sitting still, waiting for me. I groaned aloud in greeting.
The garage door was open so I pulled into the blue fluorescence and parked beside Rosalie’s day car. I sighed once before determinedly exiting the vehicle.
I slammed the door a little too hard before catching the handle before it hit the body. Perhaps I’d reached my quota this morning when it came to destroying car doors.
I ran through the small section of woods separating the garage from the house and braced myself for the impact of the meeting.
“Hello,” I said sheepishly. I wanted to sound stronger and more confident, but my nerve wavered as I entered the dining room to see everyone waiting for me at the long oval table. At the eastern head of the table, Carlisle and Esme sat side by side, their hands resting together atop the mahogany. I felt some of the resilience I’d mustered in the last few seconds return upon seeing the intensity of Esme’s golden eyes. They were full of concern and overwhelmingly forgiving. It was reassuring.
Rosalie sat directly opposite from Carlisle, very intentionally avoiding eye contact with me, her arms crossed firmly across her chest. I could feel the tension and coldness emanating from her. I was unused to feeling spurned by Rosalie. She always tenderly cared for me, always taking my side… My actions must have truly offended her today. A twinge of guilt twisted my abdomen.
It was unfair to feel any sense of betrayal considering the danger I’d placed my family in, but still with Emmett wrly seated beside Rosalie, and Jasper standing behind them, leaning against the wall mirroring Rose’s crossed arms, I felt some irrational anger at the lines being drawn. Of course, I should have known better than to think Emmett would have my back as if he wouldn’t undoubtedly support Rosalie.
Alice sat beside Esme, her eyes focused on something other than the room. I wondered if her visions made her support waver, if in all the hours I’d been gone, she’d been moving back and forth on either side of the room. She always chose the winning side.
“I’m sorry,” I breathed. “First, for this,” I crossed to the other side of the table to sit beside Carlisle, placing the parking ticket on the wood and sliding it over towards him. His lips curved into an amused smirk, and I felt encouraged by the expression.
“And more importantly,” I turned to face Rosalie, Emmett, and Jasper. “I’m very, very sorry for this morning. It was incredibly selfish, irresponsible, and stupid of me to put any of you at risk. It’s all my fault… I take full responsibility for my actions.”
Rosalie’s exquisite face finally looked up at me, her expression full of hurt. “And what does that mean, Bella? Are you planning on fixing this?”
The implication behind her words filled me with sudden indignation, and before I could calm myself down, I snapped, “not in the way that you mean.”
Of course, something had to be done about the accident, but what was the point of going to such idiotic lengths to save his life only to end it later? Didn’t she realize I’ve been fighting to keep him alive since the very moment I’d met him?
Rosalie took offense to the harsh accusation of my words. “You say that as if I’d advocate for this under normal circumstances.”
“I had planned on leaving before, and I will leave now if it makes things easier.” Rather than keeping my voice calm and even, the words again came out in ways I didn’t intend. Unnecessarily punitive. I knew it was ridiculous to be so angry with Rosalie’s anger towards me when she was entirely right, but I couldn’t tame my passion in defense of Edward’s silly little life.
“Oh, no, Bella,” Esme murmured. “Please, you can’t leave.”
I reached to squeeze my mother’s hand.
“It’d have been helpful prior to this morning,” Jasper spoke up. “Now, it’s irrelevant.”
“Jazz is right,” Emmett agreed. “There’s no point in leaving now. If anything, that’d look more suspicious.”
“I agree with Emmett, Bella,” Carlisle nodded. “For you to disappear, perhaps it’d make the boy more inclined to talk. Either all of us leave or none.”
“Edward won’t say anything,” I insisted.
“You can’t know that,” Rosalie argued.
“I trust him,” I disagreed, surprising myself at how true the statement was. I thought back to the biology lab when he’d jokingly asked if I trusted him. It was in response to his identification of the stages of mitosis, and I had said no. Now, I suddenly entrusted him with the secrecy of my vampire abilities. I was really unintelligent. She scoffed at my words. “Alice, back me up.”
“I can’t see what will happen if we just ignore this,” Alice rubbed her temples before shooting an accusatory glance in Jasper and Rosalie’s direction.
“We can’t ignore this. Bella, I have always supported you, and of course I love you dearly. But clearly, this isn’t some minor mistake. You were right – it was incredibly selfish and irresponsible and stupid! And it’d be even more irresponsible and stupid for us to allow the human the chance to say anything about it. Carlisle, you must see that,” Rosalie turned her attention to our adopted father.
“It’s not like we haven’t left rumors behind before,” I reminded her. “And I don’t recall anyone else’s first offense putting them on trial like this.”
She ignored the second part of my statement. “Rumors, Bella. Today, you’ve provided eyewitnesses and evidence! It’s not enough that you were perfect prior to today. You’re no more a saint than the rest of us! We have to be perfect always! This was a massive mistake!” Rosalie stood up from her chair. “And I know that!” I stood up as well.
“Then you should agree with what’s the right course of action! It doesn’t have to be a big production. So he seemed alright after the accident. Every mortal goes to sleep with the chance of never waking up. Say Carlisle missed something far more serious than it looked. I don’t delight in this, Bella, but the rest of our kind would expect us to take care of this. Technically, you should be the one to clean up after yourself.”
“Rosalie, the Masen boy is completely innocent,” Carlisle gently disapproved.
Rosalie frowned. “It’s an unfortunate consequence to Bella’s mistake in favor of protecting us all, but a consequence nonetheless”
“Rose, I am sorry-”
“Sorry doesn’t matter anymore, Bella!” She interrupted.
“I never wanted this. I never wanted to place you or Emmett or any of us in this position. I know my actions have affected you. But I couldn’t just let him die that way!” My chest sunk at the thought.
“But it wasn’t your place to meddle with fate. You’ve already interrupted his life with your existence alone. Why let him survive? So that you could slaughter him later?”
I winced at her words, but a low hiss escaped my throat as well.
“Rose...” Emmett reached up for her hand to placate her, but she pulled away.
“No, it’s the truth. Our existence and your fixation on his scent posed a threat to the boy. His time came, but you interfered. Now he poses a greater threat to us. So what was the point of that then? You couldn’t help yourself from cutting into his life? It seems the universe provided you with an easy way out, and you went out of your way to make things not only more difficult for yourself but for us as well. I don’t always love this life, but excuse me for taking it personally when you’ve threatened the tiniest piece of happiness I have here! You should have just let him die! It seems you’ll end up killing him anyways!”
The room shifted completely. Suddenly, everyone was on their feet, Rosalie leaned towards me in defense, Emmett uncomfortably but faithfully crouched by her side, Jasper’s stance was more confident and relaxed but poised to strike as well. Carlisle and Esme were both by my sides, holding me in place by my arms. Only Alice remained in her seat, not at all concerned by the change in atmosphere. It took me half a second to realize what had triggered everyone’s response – to process the vicious growl that erupted from my throat and the tenseness of my body as it coiled to spring at my own sister. I was too stubborn and furious to feel any shame yet. I scowled but eased my stance, allowing Carlisle and Esme to gently coax me back to my chair. Everyone else loosened their defensive posture. Emmett made Rosalie sit down, her golden eyes narrowed in a harsh glare of which I was the recipient. Jasper stood straight again but remained stiff. Once we’d all relaxed, Carlisle began speaking again.
“Rosalie, I know you mean well, but every life is precious. To murder a blameless child poses an even greater risk to us. The occasional accident or lapse in control is a regrettable part of who we are, but to bring harm to the boy would make ourselves unworthy of the protection you so lovingly wish to give us. If we make exceptions to protect ourselves, we risk something much more important. We risk losing the essence of who we are.”
I couldn’t help the tiny smile that pulled at the corner of my lips.
“Carlisle, it’s about being responsible when Bella was so horribly irresponsible.”
Being on the receiving end of Rosalie’s inflexibility and anger was not at all pleasant.
"It's being callous," Carlisle corrected softly before repeating himself. “Every human life is precious.”
Rosalie sighed heavily and turned her head to again avoid looking at me, making it very apparent where the two of us stood.
“The question is whether or not we should move on,” he continued.
“The last thing I want is to unroot any of you. I don’t think that’ll be necessary, Carlisle. I feel confident about Edward’s silence,” I insisted again.
Rosalie huffed loudly, and I turned just in time to catch her rolling her eyes.
“Well, we certainly don't have to decide now. Perhaps we wait then,” Carlisle nodded.
I turned to face Alice, searching for some reassurance about the future but instead following her accusatory gaze to where Jasper stood leaning against the wall again. They were having another one of those silent conversations they shared that the rest of us were lost to. It was almost as if they could read each other’s minds.
“What?” I asked.
“Jazz seems to feel he’s above this conversation,” Alice gritted her teeth. “He seems to think he should set things right.”
My eyes flashed between her and Jasper, whose face was expressionless and unmoved. It took me a moment to piece it together.
“Jazz,” I warned as I began to feel irrationally overprotective again. “I won’t let you punish him for my mistake.”
“So he benefits from it then?” He raised his eyebrows.
“I won’t allow it,” I repeated.
“And I won’t allow Alice to live in danger. You can’t understand, Bella. You don’t feel about anyone the way I feel towards her.”
“That’s irrelevant. I’m not just going to stand aside as you murder him,” I hissed. “I will not let you hurt Edward Masen.”
We stared at each other. I knew he was measuring the opposition and sampling the depth of my determination.
“Jazz,” Alice interrupted us, cutting through the tension in the air.
“Don’t bother telling me you can protect yourself, Alice. I already know that, but-”
“That’s not what I was going to say, but thank you for the assumption,” she rolled her eyes. “And it’s true, I can. I don’t need the backup, you overprotective fool.”
She said the last words playfully, her voice full of affection, as she stuck her tongue out. The action was out of sync with the mood of the room. “What I was going to ask for was a favor.”
Jasper’s eyebrows raised at what was seemingly an inappropriate time to make any requests. My eyebrows knitted in confusion at where the conversation was heading.
“I know you love me, but I would really appreciate it if you didn’t try to kill Edward. First, we all know how headstrong Bella is, so you shouldn’t doubt how serious she’s being right now. I don’t want the two of you to fight. Seriously. Secondly, Edward is my friend. Yours too. At least, he’s going to be.”
“What?” Jasper gasped. Even though we were all very much accustomed to Alice’s ambiguity and the bizarre certainty she spoke with about things only she had seen, this was not a statement that could so easily be digested. I couldn’t tear my attention from Alice, staring intently at her face as if the meaning behind her words would suddenly be written on her forehead. What had she seen in that little odd head of hers?
“I’m going to love him–” as she said this, I nearly choked on the air whistling down my throat “–someday, Jazz. I’d be very put out with you if you don’t leave him be.”
I was locked into place, my eyes still boring deeply into my sister’s face. I could feel the pucker on my forehead etched into my expression as I tried to make sense of what she was saying. I kept expecting Alice to explain, but every time she opened her mouth she only confounded me more.
“Ahh!” Alice sighed, smiling brightly. “See, there’s nothing to worry about! Edward won’t say anything at all.”
I could not see.
“Alice,” I whined impatiently. “What are you saying?”
“I don’t know, Bella. I told you something was changing in your future.”
“In my future? What did you see?”
“Hmm… I don’t think I should share quite yet,” Alice locked her jaw, and I growled, exasperated.
“Oh, clearly, Bella can’t be trusted lately to not act on her impulses! You should give her whatever warning you’re hiding,” Rosalie sighed, annoyed.
I was still feeling illogically irritated with Rose’s resentment, but I couldn’t disagree with her. “She’s right, Alice.”
“I really don’t think-”
“Who votes that Alice shares what she knows?” I asked restlessly. “Raise your hand.”
It was juvenile, and this was not how we came to decisions ever. Of course we’d discuss differing opinions, but never so bluntly did we vote in this manner. The way I approached the subject was rude, but still unanimously, six hands shot into the air including mine.
“Fine,” Alice huffed, scowling. “But I’m not obligated to share anything just because the rest of you voted. That’s silly. I’m only sharing because I can see that Bella won’t let this go.”
She paused and we waited, staring. It was as if we were awaiting the results of a reading from some fortune teller at a carnival, anxious to see which tarot cards she had pulled. Anxious to see what this would mean for my life.
“My vision keeps becoming clearer. At first, it was just hazy, and I couldn’t make sense of it or of who I was seeing. Every minute it’s like Bella’s more decided,” Alice began. Six pairs of eyes flickered to me, but I had no idea what she was referring to, nor did I know how this related to the boy. Alice frowned a little as if she knew what she was about to say wouldn’t be received well. “It seems there’s only two ways left for Edward now. Either Bella will… end his life or… he’ll join us.”
Esme gasped as my mouth dropped open.
“Join us?!” I choked out once I recovered. “I…. I have not made a decision anywhere in that realm at all. That has never ever crossed my mind. Why in the world would I turn him?”
“Maybe you don’t. Maybe I do it because I love him too or at least, I will. I don’t know.”
“Love him, too?” I gaped, convinced Alice’s abilities were broken somehow. “What does that even mean? Who else are you talking about?”
“Who do you think, Bella?” Alice rolled her eyes again, impatient at my lack of clairvoyance. “Clearly not Rosalie.”
“Love him!?” Rosalie questioned incredulously, eyeing me as if I’d completely lost my mind. Maybe I had.
I then realized what Alice meant as I watched Rosalie’s face and processed the other baffled pairs of eyes.
“You mean me!?” I gasped.
“Woah! What the hell...” Emmett almost laughed in surprise, then decided it was indeed actually funny and broke out into real, booming laughter. “Damn! That’s rough. Of course, Bella would fall for a human!”
“Fall for a human?” Esme asked, completely astonished. “Fall in love? With the boy she saved today?”
“Nobody is in love with anybody,” I stood up. “That’s completely absurd!”
“Ooh, touchy subject,” Emmett snickered. I glared daggers at him.
“What exactly do you see, Alice?” Jasper asked.
“I already told you. It depends on Bella’s strength. Either she’ll kill him herself which would really destroy you, Bella, not to mention how very irritated I’d be with you–” she gave me a stern look through narrowed eyes as if I’d already committed the murder then returned her attention to the rest of our family “–or he’ll be one of us someday. There’s not much else to say; the visions are finite but not detailed. It will require a great deal of self control…”
As she continued to muse, I was still frozen in place on my feet, completely numb and completely bewildered.
“...Greater than even Carlisle’s capability maybe. I wouldn’t have put it past her prior to this, but now… It’ll be extremely close as to whether or not she kills him. The only thing she’s not strong enough to do is stay away from him. That’s a completely lost cause.”
The room was entirely quiet.
“Well, this complicates things greatly,” Carlisle murmured.
After another moment of silence, Rosalie piped up. “I can’t believe it. In love with a human-”
“Oh, you’re one to talk, Rosalie!” I snarled, returning to some clarity.
“Girls, please-” Esme began to plead.
“Ooh, she got you there, babe,” Emmett interrupted, chuckling as Rose growled at him.
“Emmett,” Esme warned sternly. He held up his hands in surrender but winked at me, grinning widely.
I couldn’t even appreciate the realliance. I was still too lost in the sudden upheaval of my entire life.
“I suppose the plans remain the same, though," Carlisle said thoughtfully. "We'll stay and watch. Obviously, no one will...hurt the boy.”
“Of course not,” Jasper agreed, nodding his head once. “If Alice only sees two ways, then it’s unnecessary to take matters into-”
“Shut up, Jazz,” I said numbly.
Everyone’s eyes flickered over to me.
I was just loving being the center of attention these days.
If Alice only sees two ways...
“You’re wrong,” I whispered. For the first time in my life, I was betting against Alice.
My psychic sister opened her mouth to protest but stopped after seeing either in her head or on my face that I wasn’t finished.
“I hardly know Edward. I don’t see how it could be possible for me to… develop any kind of… feelings for him. That’s entirely ridiculous. I mean, he’s… human! The only scenario that could potentially ever happen – which again, it’s absolutely implausible – would be if I were to accidentally change him. And even then, I mean, why would I-... He’s so… Ugh, just nevermind! That would be a complete mistake. A mistake greater than the one I made today. And I’m very sorry to you all for how I’ve mutilated the future with my actions, but I’m going to fix it. I’ll leave-”
“You can’t,” Alice and Esme interrupted at the same time. My sister’s tone was one of annoyance while my mother’s was one of concern.
“You’re right,” I nodded, but my agreement wasn’t for the reasons Alice meant. I wasn’t considering my capability to leave based on my own will power against leaving the boy behind. That was something too complicated to unpack here in front of my family. Something that’d be better dealt with on the floor with my arms wrapped around my knees. I wouldn’t leave because it’d be more crucial for me to stay now. The responsible thing to do. “But I’ll try to...I will stay away from Edward–” suddenly, I felt a desire to begin to distance myself from him and referring to him by his name felt too deeply personal, so I corrected myself, “–from the boy, I mean. It’s not right to condemn him to either fate. I won’t allow that to happen.”
As I spoke, Rosalie’s face softened and she materialized by my side, taking my hand.
“I’m sorry for how I’ve behaved today, Bella. I only spoke out of love for our family. But you’re right. It’s not right. And I’m glad you’re choosing to do the right thing by staying away. I still don’t feel as though trusting him is responsible, but if what Alice has said is true-”
“I’m sorry, too,” I cut her off quietly, not wanting to hear the rest. I was feeling sorry for so much more than just how I spoke to Rose.
Esme appeared behind me as well, placing her hand encouragingly on my shoulder. “We are here to support you, Bella.”
“Thanks,” I murmured unenthusiastically.
Nobody moved again as they waited to see what I’d do next. I felt like a zoo animal.
I sighed, releasing Rose’s hand and shaking off Esme.
“If you don’t mind, I think I’d like to be by myself.”
“Of course,” Carlisle responded.
I crossed behind the west side of the table. Emmett let out a low, cartoony whistle of relief to break the tension, and I punched him on the arm as I passed. As I exited the room, Alice called, “wait!”
She was by my side in an instant.
“This is from the accident. It’s Edward’s. I thought maybe you’d want to return it to him.”
I looked down as she pulled my unresponsive hand away from my body to place the thick, chestnut journal I’d seen Edward reach for in his backseat right before the accident. I stared at her, impassive, so she sighed and wrapped my fingers around the worn leather to force it into my grip.
“Thanks,” I mumbled, turning and disappearing out of the house into the forest.
As I ran, I felt the weight of their eyes on me.

Tri-Arame: Sitting Sasuke
Primary Pairing Trio: YuuAyuSetsu Words: ~3k Rating: G Time Frame: Late in the first trimester of their 2nd year Story Arc: Stand Alone
———-
Author’s Note: Ever since myon included Sasuke in her SetsuAyu doujin, I knew I needed to include Ayumu’s pet in my fic as well. And I had to borrow a certain idea from the doujin as well, because it fit so well with headcanons I already had for the girls.
I’ll link the doujin as well as another source of inspiration in my followup post so tumblr doesn’t drop this one from searches; the tag is barren enough as it is...
----------
Setsuna hummed happily to herself as she entered the clubroom and turned toward her hidden stash of manga with the intent of getting a chapter or two read before the others arrived. The next book was being released soon in one of her favorite series, so she wanted to reread the previous book to remind herself where everything had left off. Of course, the series was so good that any of the books warranted a reread on their own merit as well.
However, something on the other side of the room caught Setsuna’s eye. Strange, she didn’t remember an aquarium there before. Her manga quickly forgotten, she made her way over. Oh, it wasn’t an aquarium as it wasn’t filled with water, rather it just had a bowl of it in the middle. What was the term used for… terrarium, that was it. So, what critter had one of her friends decided to bring to school?
Setsuna hunched down to get a better view into the various structures in which an animal could hide within the terrarium. At first, she didn’t see anything, so she shifted her position to check through one of the side panels. And that was when she finally spotted it, a purple snake, coiled up inside something that resembled a pink rabbit.
“It’s so~ cu~te!” Setsuna couldn’t help saying aloud as she stared, transfixed at the animal.
Though she’d never considered herself a fan of snakes, she wasn’t exactly afraid of them either. She’d seen larger snakes at the zoo and smaller ones while out hiking but had always been indifferent toward them. This time, however, instead of a neutral reaction, she found herself wanting to hold this one and see it up close. As such, Setsuna had to resist the urge to pull off the top of the terrarium and reach in. It would be best to ask permission from the owner, she told herself. After all, she didn’t know if it was venomous or if it would be afraid of strangers or whatever and the last thing she wanted to do was to scare or hurt the cute little thing.
“Setsuna-chan?”
Setsuna jumped and let out a startled cry as she whirled to face the door, twisting awkwardly from her position and throwing herself off balance. “Yuu-san? Ayumu-san?” She uttered, catching herself on the bookshelf.
“You found him…” Ayumu’s expression was apologetic.
“Eh?” Setsuna was confused. How was she expected to not notice such a sizable addition to the clubroom?
“Sorry for not asking permission first.”
Oh. Yeah, it did actually violate one of the school’s policies. But Setsuna hadn’t even considered that earlier as she had been so distracted by the adorableness. And of course, he belonged to Ayumu, the pink rabbit enclosure should have been enough of a giveaway.
“It’s fine. I’ll let it slide this time.” Setsuna assured.
Relief took over Ayumu’s posture. “Thank you.”
“So, to what do we owe the pleasure of his visit?”
“Construction.” Yuu said.
“Hm?”
“That storm last week did some damage to the exterior of our apartment complex.” Yuu explained further. “So now they’re fixing it.”
“And the noise has been stressing out Sasuke to the point where he’s not eating or even wanting to be held or do anything other than hide.” Ayumu continued.
“So, poor Sasuke-san is scared?” Setsuna turned her attention back to the terrarium. “Awwww…”
“Under different circumstances, I’d give him to Yuu-chan for a little while, but she’s right next door, so that wouldn’t be much of an escape.”
“That makes sense.”
“Plus, I’ve temporarily banned Yuu-chan from feeding Sasuke because she…”
“Ayumu~!” Yuu suddenly whined. “That’s supposed to be a secret! And besides, it’s not my fault he keeps looking at me with those adorable, pleading eyes. How could I not give him a second serving?” She blinked and covered her mouth as she realized she had just been the one to divulge the details of the supposed secret.
Both Setsuna and Ayumu laughed a little at the cute behavior.
“Anyway,” Ayumu continued “I was hoping I could either leave him here for a little while or maybe someone from the club could…”
“I’ll take him!” Setsuna offered before realizing she was interrupting. “Sorry, I mean…”
This time, it was Yuu who chuckled at the reaction.
“It’s alright.” Ayumu dismissed with a shake of her head and a smile. “But are you sure? Do you want to check with your parents first?”
“It will be fine.”
“Have you ever taken care of a snake before?”
“No, but surly I can look up what I need online, right?”
“I’ll just write up a list of things that Sasuke is used to, like feeding times and temperatures and light and such.”
“That works too.” Setsuna nodded. “Say, uhm… you said he didn’t like being held…”
“Oh, no, he usually likes it when I hold and play with him, but he’s just been so stressed by the noise…”
“I see, do you think maybe I could…” Setsuna’s gaze drifted back toward the terrarium.
“Well, he’s pretty shy around strangers.” Ayumu admitted. “It took him a number of visits to get used to Yuu-chan. You’re welcome to try, of course, but don’t be too disappointed if he doesn’t respond.”
Setsuna couldn’t help smiling as she lifted the hinged portion of the lid. “Hey, Sasuke-san.” She cooed as she reached her hand toward the pink structure.
A curious purple head poked out at the mention of his name and a forked tongue flicked out to taste the scent of the new person invading his home. Setsuna paused a few centimeters away, remembering Ayumu saying he might be shy and hoping Sasuke would be the one to close the distance. Thankfully, her instincts were right and a moment later he was coiling around her hand and wrist. She giggled at the strange sensation of scales sliding over her skin.
“Wow…” Yuu breathed in awe.
“I think he likes you, Setsuna-chan.” Ayumu said happily.
“He really is adorable…” Setsuna swooned as she pulled her arm out of the tank and moved it closer so she could better inspect the creature.
As if in response to the praise, Sasuke slithered farther up the raven-haired girl’s arm and held his head up close to her face.
“Uhm, forgive me for asking, Ayumu-san,” Setsuna started as she reached her free hand up to pat the snake gently on the head “but what made you choose a snake for a pet? He’s adorable, but I would have thought you would go with something…” she paused to decide the best word “fluffier? Like a rabbit or something.”
“It was all Yuu-chan’s fault.” Ayumu responded with a smile that indicated a wealth of warm memories were welling up within her.
Of course. That made sense.
“Rabbits are definitely one of my favorite animals,” the redhead continued “and Yuu-chan has known that since not long after we met. So, for my birthday one year, she saved up and tried to buy a stuffed rabbit she knew I would like.”
“But it turned out to be a bit too expensive.” Yuu added with a slightly embarrassed chuckle. “So as a last resort, I found a plush I knew I could get from a crane machine, a purple snake. I was worried she wouldn’t like it, but…”
“I’m sure Ayumu-san would like any gift from Yuu-san.” Setsuna thought aloud.
“You’re right there, Setsuna-chan.” Ayumu confirmed.
“Working hard to obtain a gift but ending up having to get something else that is still loved by the recipient because the thoughtfulness of the giver is more important to them is a classic trope.” Setsuna explained. “Some of my favorite episodes and chapters have been centered around such a plot device.”
Both Yuu and Ayumu laughed lightly.
“So that made you fall in love with snakes and that’s why you got Sasuke-san?” Setsuna pondered.
Ayumu shook her head. “No, that was Yuu-chan again. She spotted him at a pet store and set up a plan for me to get him.”
“Like with the plush from years before, he was more expensive than I could afford.” Yuu admitted. “But I had the store hold him for a few days and between Ayumu and I, and with some help from her parents, we were able to get him.”
“Mmm, that sounds nice.” Setsuna said with a smile, despite a small pang of jealousy. But who could blame her? Who wouldn’t want to be with someone so obviously devoted to them? “Hehe.” She suddenly laughed as a completely different idea came to her. “If I put him over my shoulders, instead of a feather boa, I’d be wearing an actual boa.”
“He’s a python actually.” Ayumu corrected. “A ball python. But he does like riding on my shoulders at home.”
“Want to ride my shoulders?” Setsuna asked of the snake on her arm as if he might actually understand. “I’d wear him through practice if I wasn’t afraid of him falling.” She continued as she coaxed Sasuke into position.
“He’s pretty good at holding on as I walk around.” Ayumu said. “But the sudden movements of our dances might scare him.”
“Mmm.” Setsuna nodded in agreement. “But still, wouldn’t it be fun to design a costume around him?”
“Maybe write a song about him?” Yuu chimed in.
“Yeah, something like a ballad with slow, graceful movements.” She hummed a random tune and made gentle wave motions with her arms, carefully monitoring Sasuke’s response. “Though I suppose if he’s shy, he may not like the crowd too much…”
“Or the flashing lights and effects.” Ayumu added.
“Well if that’s a concern, why not a small, private show?” Yuu suggested. “Like just the three of us?”
“That might work better.” Ayumu seemed to be warming to the idea.
“Sounds like fun.” Setsuna said with an excited smile.
“Oh, and if we do want to share it with others,” Yuu shared in the excitement “we could always film it and make it a PV to post online.”
“That’s an amazing idea, Yuu-san! We should try that someday.”
“Semp… AAAIII!” Kasumi’s call for her senior turned into a scream.
“Kasumi-san?!” Shizuku exclaimed as her fellow first-year spun and barreled into her as though she had forgotten she was there.
“S-s-snake!” The ash blonde cried in a panic, trying to push past the brunette to escape the clubroom they had just entered.
“Kasumi-san, wait!” Shizuku called before giving chase to her fellow first-year.
“Uhm…” Setsuna pondered as she moved back toward the terrarium. “Do we have anything here that we could use to cover this thing until I can bring it home after practice?”
“I think Kanata-san has a blanket or two…” Yuu thought aloud.
“We probably shouldn’t borrow them without her permission.” Ayumu dismissed. “What if she is scared of snakes as well and it ends up bothering her to have her blankets used in such a way?”
“Perhaps we can leave him in the student counsel office for the time being?” Setsuna offered.
“That sounds good.” Ayumu nodded.
“Back in you go, Sasuke-san.” Setsuna guided the snake down her arm and into his terrarium. “Everything will be alright. One short little move now and another big one in a bit, but then you’ll be in a nice quite apartment. Sound like a plan?”
For his part, Sasuke slithered into his rabbit enclosure and coiled up. However, after a moment, he poked his head out and stared at Setsuna for a few seconds before pulling back in.
“Looks like he agrees.” Ayumu commented before lifting the tank to take it to the student counsel office.
----------
Everything was not alright.
Setsuna sighed as she stared at the snake in the terrarium she had just finished setting up in her room.
She really should have checked with her parents first. Or perhaps she should have made sure she knew everything about caring for a snake before she jumped at the opportunity to do so. While she maintained confidence that she was able to do everything on Ayumu’s list, it took quite a bit of convincing before her parents let her store the frozen mice in their freezer.
And what the heck was up with this one instruction on the list? Was it normal for snake owners to sing to their pets to encourage them to eat? Or was it simply something special Ayumu did for Sasuke?
Well, Setsuna did recall reading at some point about some study performed with music as an aid in plant growth. And it was true that music had a power that transcended the need to understand the language of the lyrics. Babies and many mammals responded positively to music. So why not reptiles? Suddenly, the practice no longer seemed strange to Setsuna.
She got up and quickly made her way to the bathroom to retrieve the mouse she had left thawing in the sink. Ayumu had mentioned that since Sasuke was well past his scheduled feeding, that Setsuna should make an attempt as soon as possible.
“Ready to eat, Sasuke-san?” Setsuna asked, pulling the mouse out of its bag with a large pair of tweezers and opening the lid of the terrarium. “Here comes a cute little mouse.” She moved the food as though to pretend it was alive.
When Sasuke did not seem to repond, Setsuna leaned down to check. Sure enough, he hadn’t budged at all. His eyes were open, so he was undoubtedly aware of Setsuna and the presence of food, but he remained still.
Well, music it is then. Setsuna stood straight and took a breath.
“Hashiridashita! Omoi wa tsuyoku suru yo.” Setsuna began, keeping her volume low so as not to disturb her parents. However, she almost forgot the next line when Sasuke’s head popped out of his enclosure. “Nayandara kimi no te o nigirou.” The snake seemed to be ignoring the mouse and stared directly up at her. As there was no music accompanying her, Setsuna skipped a few beats ahead to keep the song going. “Daiji na kimochi maru de uragiru you ni sugoshita…”
Setsuna continued through the first verse, watching Sasuke for any further response beyond occasionally flicking out his tongue. Upon reaching the chorus, she began moving the mouse again. This time, it caught Sasuke’s attention. Just inside the enclosure, Setsuna could see scales sliding past each other as the snake shifted its position. Then, right as she reached the end of the chorus, Sasuke struck.
Startled at the swift movement, Setsuna almost dropped the tweezers. Her mental record scratched for second before she recovered and continued into the second verse. She then withdrew the tweezers and gently closed the lid before watching with fascination as Sasuke began the process of slowly swallowing the mouse.
Only a bulge behind Sasuke’s head remained as evidence of his feeding by the time Setsuna finished her song. Smiling, she retrieved her phone and snapped a quick picture to send to Ayumu.
“Good boy, Sasuke-san.” Setsuna cooed a she hit Send.
UeharaAyumu: He ate!
UeharaAyumu: Oh thank goodness
UeharaAyumu: I was so worried
UeharaAyumu: Thank you so much Setsuna-chan!
ScarletStorm: You are welcome, Ayumu-san
ScarletStorm: But no thanks are truly necessary.
ScarletStorm: I merely followed your well-written instructions.
UeharaAyumu: But I do need to thank you
UeharaAyumu: For providing Sasuke with an environment where he felt comfortable
UeharaAyumu: He trusts you
UeharaAyumu: And that is enough to be thankful for
ScarletStorm: Very well then.
ScarletStorm: On a related note, your instructions say that I should not hold him until he is finished digesting?
UeharaAyumu: That’s right
UeharaAyumu: I think most of us might need a rest after eating basically a week’s worth of food in one meal
ScarletStorm: That makes sense
Though it made sense, Setsuna found it a little disappointing. While her primary reason for agreeing to watch Sasuke was to help a friend in need, she also had a selfish reason of wanting to experience what it might be like to have a pet, even if just for a week or so. And part of having a pet was petting it and holding it and the like, right?
UeharaAyumu: But don’t worry, Setsuna-chan
UeharaAyumu: He should be good to go in a day or two, depending on a few factors
UeharaAyumu: But given the circumstances, I would bet on the lower side of that range
UeharaAyumu: Just check in on him when you get home from practice tomorrow
UeharaAyumu: He trusts you so if he’s ready, he will come to you if you put your hand near him like you did earlier today
Setsuna chuckled. It almost seemed like Ayumu had read her mind though the phone.
ScarletStorm: Alright, I will try that tomorrow.
ScarletStorm: Thank you, Ayumu-san.
UeharaAyumu: I’m the one who should be thanking you
UeharaAyumu: For agreeing to take care of Sasuke
UeharaAyumu: And for getting him to eat
ScarletStorm: You already thanked me for that.
ScarletStorm: And the pleasure is mine.
ScarletStorm: Anyway, I need to get back to my studies.
ScarletStorm: But I wanted to give you an update on Sasuke-san first.
UeharaAyumu: It was very much appreciated
UeharaAyumu: Have a good night, Setsuna-chan
UeharaAyumu: See you tomorrow!
ScarletStorm: Yes, you as well. See you tomorrow.
Setsuna set down her phone and turned her attention back to the terrarium, only to find Sasuke staring up at her. Oh dear… was this what Yuu meant when she meant by adorable, pleading eyes? She suddenly empathized with the plight the twin-tailed girl faced. The temptation to go thaw out another mouse was ris… No. She shook her head.
“I’m sorry, Sasuke-san.” Setsuna apologized. “Ayumu-san said you can only have one at a time. She was very clear on that. But… she didn’t limit how many songs I could sing to you… Would you like me to sing something else?”
Sasuke lifted his head and flicked his tongue as if to respond that he was interested.
“Alright.” Setsuna said with a smile. “How about an old favorite of mine from one of the best groups in school idol history?”

Lovely Lauren! ✨ (I’ll do some alliteration too hehe so no I don’t think it’s weird 🤪)
No worries at all, I’m just glad tumblr didn’t eat it 😅 congratulations on cleaning your room, that can sometimes feel like such a monumental task!!
And thank you!! 🥰 I didn’t even have too many bad side effects, other than some slight pain in my arm and being incredibly tired for a few days (but then again I’m always tired so is it fair to blame that on the vaccine lol 🤔)
You’re very welcome! And it is so important for the younger generations, I always try to model inclusivity for my students and I hope that I’m succeeding but at the very least I’m trying.
I think with a lot of arts and humanities subjects, but especially with writing, people tend to underestimate the effort that actually goes into the craft until they actually try it. I also love reading sonnets but I’m not a huge fan of writing them because they are so hard 🥲
to narrow down the categories a bit, do you have a favorite sonnet? What is the poem you would want read at your funeral?
I totally agree, there’s a difference between getting dark and using humor as a coping mechanism for difficult things versus using it to be mean and malicious but writing it off as “haha just a joke!” 🙄
I also despise economics haha would prefer if the made up little numbers did NOT control our lives but alas! If you were to someday own your own business, what kind of business would it be??
I don’t think I’ve asked before, so what kind of work does your husband do? That’s really unfortunate about the state of the records, I’m sorry that’s the situation and hope it all works out for the best should either of you decide to go back!!
Ohhh I also have a hidden objects game that I like to play! It’s called Manor Matters, and I like that one and Gardenscapes because there’s a storyline to them so it feels more engaging than just playing the game part. I mostly like to play on the train or the bus haha.
Totally fair, being in somebody’s wedding can be very stressful. Is your sister older or younger? I have several close friends getting married this summer but I’m not able to attend because of travel restrictions which kind of bums me out. I think lacy dresses are so gorgeous!! I truly hope that you’ll be able to have that someday 🥰
Your chair sounds fabulous, it’s so nice to have a good non bed lounging spot!! I’m thinking of rearranging the furniture in my room because I’m kind of bored with the layout and maybe even getting a few new items of furniture (I’m in desperate need of a bookshelf rn) so I’ll keep you updated on how that goes.
Sunflowers are one of my favorite flowers! And I love seeing dandelions first pop up in the spring, such a nice burst of color after winter. Pink is such a fun color, I loved the “dusty pastel” color trend a few years ago and had so many dusty rose clothes hahah.
Ohhh I haven’t watched H2O in forever!! When I was in high school I babysat for this family pretty consistently and the daughter loved it so we watched it a lot together. Might be fun to watch again! What’s your favorite marvel movie? I’ve never really been able to get into it but my students love it so I promised them if we went into another lockdown I would make it my quarantine project to watch the whole franchise lol.
I’m so glad you were able to see your friend!! Are your kids close in age?
I did get my insurance sorted out thankfully and I even got in my chill walk! AND I went to the pool with a friend this week, so that was excellent. If I’m feeling up to it this weekend I’m planning on taking a hike up to a lake to go swimming and read! The weather has finally warmed up here after a month straight of rain 🌞
Sending you hugs! Xoxo 💖 Drew
Drew, my love! I love how your weekend turned out for you! Send some rain to Az for me, eh? Specifically the Phoenix area. A couple of nights ago we had something called a heat burst happen over my house. I didn’t know that was a thing until last night. But basically the temp skyrocketed suddenly at nine pm to triple digits. Plus, since it’s fire season, we’ve got all this lovely smoke trapping in the pollution. We’re under heat advisory too right now, so we have been stuck inside all week. No swimming. And definitely no going out of it can be helped. I live in hell.
The kids are close in age. Her son is about two and half years older than mine. They love each other. It’s pretty cute. We are just happy they get along.
I haven’t watched all the marvel movies, but they’re all pretty good. Honestly, Black Panther is pretty good. Iron man is one of my favorites but I’m kinda hooked on RDJ. He’s around my parents age but damn does he make it look good. The best marvel universe show I’ve seen yet has been Wanda Vision. Spider-Man is also a must see. They nailed the character. And Deadpool is good too.
I need a new bookshelf too. But I don’t have anyplace to put one right now. I think I need a bigger house. Some people would tell me to downsize my books. I would say that’s blasphemy.
It’s my younger sister who’s getting married. But I also have an older sister! We are all pretty close. Which is nice. In fact, I mentioned wanting to move out of country to my little sister the other day and she just about murdered me. 😂
Husband does data and reporting analysis. However, his degree is in Game Art and Design. He wanted to get his masters in something tech related. But he likes to code too. He and I talk about business ideas all the time! I always thought about owning a coffee shop/ book store. And recently I had this crazy good idea about a resin pour business. I do also have a clothing design I put together for school but also wanted to pursue in actuality.
The poem is by Thomas Gray and it’s called Ode on the Death of a Favorite Cat, Drowned in a Tub of Gold Fishes. It’s macabre. And sad. And just a little funny. I should be ashamed of myself. I really should.
Honestly the bard does it for me always. Sonnet 116 is always a classic. It’s been my favorite for a long time. But sonnet 130 is a close second. The first is traditionally romantic but there’s something to be said about Shakespeare’s realistic depiction of his love in 130. It’s honest and kinda sweet.
How do you feel about satire? It can be another difficult form to master but when it’s done well I find it incredibly enjoyable. I had the joy of reading A Modest Proposal to my husband once. He was only really familiar with Swift’s Guliver’s Travels. So I introduced him to that. The shock on his face was priceless. But he enjoyed it overall.
As I was pulling out the book I needed to get the proper name and author of the poem, I came across a book I bought awhile back. It’s called the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. That was an excellent book, and if you haven’t already read it, I thought I’d recommend it. I like to recommend that one to people a lot. It was addicting.
I’m glad your side effects were tame! Here are some sunflowers 🌻 🌻 🌻 to brighten up your day!
Out of curiosity, what do you teach???

I Am Blue
"Ya know... mortals and 'gods' alike seem to have this warped idea of how death and the afterlife works. They think the 'White light' at the end of the 'tunnel' leads to some place called 'Heaven'. They think they're taken to a place of peace and tranquility after they die. It's kinda sad... hm? Well... Not every god does. Only the ones that haven't met us. That is: me and my colleagues. They're the ones still in the dark as to what actually happens... What? You really want to know? Heh... Alright, fine. I'll humor you. Let's start with that light I mentioned. It is true that you see it before you die, but it's not welcoming you into heaven. In fact, that's far from what it's doing. The light is deaths gateway from my home realm to yours. And it only opens when someone is close to death. The ones who are dying are the only ones that can see it because death only shows herself to those close to her. And she's not great at kind introductions. Hehe... she always loved her job... the crazy bit-"
"Master, your tea is ready." A cheery voice rang through my office. A small room with a large computer and control panel taking up the entire left wall and encroaching on the surrounding walls. In the corner is an elevator that leads farther down into my workshop. Many monitors showed images of my base, inside and out. It's nothing special, looks more like a windowless house than a base, aside from my office and various large metal doors that lead outside.
My kitchen is small, mostly closed off since there's a wall separating it from the living room. The living room is maybe the biggest room. It has a small sofa, coffee table and bookshelf along the wall leading to the divider wall. Across from it is my bedroom, bathroom, and office doors. My office door is a little special, it's got a fancy lock with a keypad and retina scanner. Down the hall from all that is my laundry room and at the end of the hall and at the opposite end are the doors leading outside. That's about it. Small, cozy, safe. It's all underground, below a warehouse on the outskirts of the inner city.
"Master!"
"Yeah yeah... I'm coming." I say and stand, stretching a bit. Been a slow day, so I haven't moved much from my chair. Getting up, I head into the kitchen to grab the cup Mao left me and take a seat on the couch. "Hm? Oh right, I was explaining something... yeah, White, or Shadow is her name. Her title is White. I normally just use their titles nowadays. It's easier than learning everyone's names again... White is one of the colors, as am I. We're two of 9... as I said before, she is death. She handles bringing souls to our realm. That's pretty much all she does. Pretty reclusive too, doesn't do much other than her job, which is fine. It's not like she's able to just take a break from it anyway." I take a sip from my cup and settle in deeper into my couch. "She is not considered a part of the colors however. Her and black. They were... I supposed you'd consider them mistakes. When the Guardian split herself, she split her soul into 7 pieces. Blue: her morals, Red: her knowledge, Yellow: her sense to punish those her deserve it, Pink: her emotions, Orange: her instinct, Purple: her urge to protect, and Green: her need to help those who cannot help themselves. White was the shell the Guardian left behind, and black was... what held her together."
"..."
I laugh, "Yeah, it is rather ironic. Me being her morals and all... but I was really good at my job. I lived up to my title before... all this, y'know?"
"..."
"My job? I keep order. We all do, but I keep order of mind. I make it so that creatures are able to have a will, a mind of their own, to not be controlled... it's not the easiest thing to describe, but I keep people sane."
"..."
"The others? Yeah... I suppose I could. I do owe you an explanation of everything, don't I?" I ask, sighing into my cup. I think for a moment before continuing, "I'm ganna put things simply. It'll be faster and less bothersome. Red controls how much knowledge something is able to know. Orange is in charge of the food chain. Purple controls genetics and mutations. Pink uh... the hell does Pink do again? I think she gives the ability to feel. Pain, love, hurt, those things. Yellow puts caps on how powerful creatures can get. And Green controls time and life... or something like that. It's been awhile since I've needed to know these things..." I chuckle softly, scratching my head.
"W..ho..?"
"The voice earlier? That was Mao. He's an AI I programmed. Cheery little thing, isn't he? He takes care of the base and the warehouse. Always wanting to help." I smile.
"Of course, master! Anything to make your day better!" Mao chimed in.
"..."
"Oh... did I get off topic? My bad. You wanted to know about the whole afterlife and god thing, yeah? Well, first off, they're called Guardians. At least, that's what they call themselves. The one humans tend to believe in is actually the colors and I. The others... have abandoned this realm. They normally tend to just stick to home. Occasionally they'll travel to visit another realm, another Guardian, but they're pretty content with the people in their realms rather than others." I take another sip and glance around at my guests. "The concept of Heaven and Hell is mostly made up by humans. Mostly. After death, you are sent to my realm, as I said earlier, and your entire life is judged right then. If the Guardian, that is my Guardian, deems you innocent enough, you may continue living. Whether you stay in my realm as a citizen or, go off to be an angel or reaper, or want to be reincarnated, all that is up to you. Though in some circumstance you will be forced to reincarnate. Depends on what you did in your life. If you would rather cease to exist all together, we will grant you that as well. And if you are deemed a threat, you will be punished to the degree we see fit. There is no Heaven, but there is a place similar to Hell. People are sent there to receive punishment, but it does not last as long as humans say it does. It all depends this and that." I wave my hand around, motioning to nothing in particular as I speak. "There is a maximum punishment though. Erasure. We will wipe you from existence permanently. Anything you did will be fixed and/or forgotten. You will be forgotten. Any influence you left will be erased." I stay quiet for a moment or two. "But that rarely happens." I wave off. "Satisfied?" I inquire, finishing off tea.
"........w...h..o....a..re....yo..u..?"
"Who am I?" I parrot and slowly stand, setting my empty cup on the coffee table. I hum as I walk into the bathroom. Flipping on the light, I stare at my reflection in the mirror. My black hair is slicked back. My face is hidden behind a white mask with large teeth, dark purple tear streaks, and a large blue pentagon shaped gem on my forehead. My eyes glow a deep blue from behind the mask. I'm wearing one of my nice red button ups, and my brown leather and steal gauntlets with the same gem on the back of my hands. I look pale and sickly. Skinny too, but I do have some muscle still. "I am Adel. Though, to my 'colleagues', I'm known as the Rogue Blue."

I am working on a portal-to-another-realm, hidden-stuff room right now for my guest bedroom. So far the highlights include:
closet is literally under the stairs
closet door is hidden bookshelf door
most books on bookshelf door will be hollowed out and filled with fun stuff for guests, like a book about music that will have extra headphones, a pocket AM/FM radio, and maybe a music box that plays eerie tunes
murphy bed (looks like a credenza, will also have hidden drawers and stuff)
secretary desk with many trick drawers and hidden places
one outlet is fake but I will store spare charging cords in there people can grab
tons of fan art of portal fantasy books like Alice and Narnia and Wayward Children and Oz
one of the arts will be on a hinge and behind it will be a little medicine cabinet with first aid stuff and guest stuff like shampoo and tampons and the like
one of the arts will be a rebus or code that is the wifi password
use other space under stairs to make ghost-in-the-mirror trick (fear not, I will warn/show people before they sleep there unless I know they love that shit)
stuff that does the incorrect thing, like a lamp that looks like an electric kettle
I have purchased the hardware for the bookshelf door and murphy bed, but I gotta get the stuff that's currently stored in there cleared out so I can start to build.
Yes, I will definitely provide pics as I go, hehe.
I’m going on a road trip this weekend to fetch the wardrobe that we’ll be converting into a secret narnia door, though that project won’t actually be starting until May. So just as a quick update: still zero on the self control meter for me.

I’m feeling a bit shit today so I’ll focus on what I want my future apartment to have which makes me happy :)
FOODS - KITCHEN
Since I do ballet and I am very sensitive towards foods, my kitchen needs to be a place of healing and comfort. Therefore, it needs to contain foods that are beneficial for me and do not cause me any harm. Food has been a topic on which I have had many problems with those past three years and I am still very sensitive about. One of the things I also look most forward to when I move out of my house in Greece and start living my life on my own, has been to have my own kitchen containing only the foods of my choice .
A list of things I am going to have :
Whole organic and biological fruits and vegetables, that are fresh and nurture me the way I am supposed to be. They make me feel energised, full and happy.
Pasta (maybe gluten free cause there is a possibility it may be better for me), rice and grains like couscous and quinoa which are easy to make
Legumes, like beans, chickpeas, lentils and others which are a great source of protein and good for me but in small amounts!
Occasionaly I might have some raw nuts and dried fruit as snacks for ballet training and some time an energy bar
Bread will only be rarely in my house since I am depending too much on it and it’s not good for me. I will have sourdough or gluten free only.
Honey! of course I’ll have honey and I trust myself to consume it slowly and rarely. :)
Nut butters are a pain in the ass! I love them but my body hates them so I’ll be saying goodbye to them and not invite them in my house.
Then I will have some olive oil for my salads and some vinegar which I cannot live without.
My meat and fish consumption will be measured I think. I’ve never been a fan but for medical reason need them, though I think that I will personally not buy the but only eat them whenever I visit my grandmother and maybe my sister, or occasionaly if I ever eat out.
Seeds! Flax seeds, chia seeds and sunflower seeds are a must for salads
Oats! Good for breakfast.
Milk, yogurt and cheese which are apparently after all I’ve been through, good for me. Cheese will only be feta and goat cheese as other cheeses are not good for me and I do not trust myself with those.
Dark chocolate! Some good 80 - 90% chocolate is very beneficial for the brain and makes me happy!
Crackers! I mean we all snack and those are a very good option for me as I can find some with good ingredients in them and enjoy them in a healthy way.
Coffee and tea!
I might have some glass of wine hidden someplace hehe oops!
I think those are aproximately what I will be having as foods in my house. Occasionaly I might buy some sugar-free cookies or some kind of treat but I prefer not having any sugar at home or a whole pack of snacks cause they are not good and make me feel bad! That’s all I had to say about foods and my kitchen! Moving on now !
DECORATION
Those past months I have been feeling that I own too much stuff in my teeny tiny room. And that made me think of how incovenient that must be for next year in my tiny apartment. Also I want to decorate my new home as soon as possible and make it familiar and comfortable, so that I may feel good and right at home. So here are a list of things that I want my house to have:
Fairy lights! Can’t live without ‘em anymore
I think I’m gonna put up a string with pictures and cards hanging on it
Board.With pins or magnets.
I’m gonna have some of my books with me of course so I might have a lil bookshelf or I’m gonna but them on my desk.
Actually I’m having some trouble here. It’s not really that I want some specific things in my apartment as it’s difficult to imagine without knowing how it will look like. But anyways what I intended to say with this is that I want it to have few things as it’s gonna be very small so I don’t want to feel asphyxiated by too much stuff around me. I’m gonna have a new duvet on my bed that I’m gonna chose at IKEA and I’ll have a desk with a laptop hopefully. I’m gonna have an ironing plank and an ironer and some books to read and some notebooks to keep notes on ballet, food, places and educational stuff like anatomy and nature. I’m gonna put up pictures and cards in some way and my fairy lights and I’ll have a full length mirror. I’ll have a little succulent and a little cactus and i will sing for them in the moonlight. I will have a music player or my laptop on and I’ll have music as soon as I enter my door. I’have little memento’s of friends that’ll remind me that I’m being loved. I’ll wake up very early in the morning and get ready for class and I’ll open the blinds and let the light wash in.
CLOTHES - STYLE
Since I’ll be moving from Greece to Belgium, I will not be bringing all of my clothing and also the weather differs from place to place and I will not need the same as here always. Also for some months now I have been wanting to stop supporting the mass fashion industries that are taking over in most countries. For the main reason of not supporting their actions and the way they make money and use people but also because either way I mostly never find anything good in there that I like as a style. I have been really wanting to start buying from second hand stores because firstly you can find amazing unique pieces of clothing and also because the you give your money to buy something that has already been used and therefore you do not help industries make more items and do not help them. I’ve taken the decision to start shopping only at second hand shops and at stores that do produce their clothing items by hand and to generally support individuals for their work and know that by buying new clothes I am helping out a fellow human being and not contributing to the worlds damage.
