It has been an age since I’ve done one of these! So I’m just making up my own thing.

This is the first year I’ve written fanfic since 2019. It’s been really nice returning to something fun and low stakes that doesn’t have the same pressures as my original fiction. Writing for myself is something I lost over the last few years and it’s been so nice getting that back. There’s something really powerful about having your own little blorbo just for yourself and pursuing the things that speak to you.

All of my fanfic this year was FFXIV related and it was so nice sinking into a new world and rummaging around. I love that I get to know Aureia better the more I write her, and her journey is very near and dear to my heart. I haven’t finished anywhere near to all the stories I want to write about her, but she is very clear in my head Aureia’s been through hell, but she’s also my favourite blorbo so I’m not going to apologize for making her suffer.

✦ Divergence of the Heart

This is probably my favourite fic I’ve written this year, if not my favourite fic I’ve ever written. I started it in February of this year and finished it in December. It was the multipart that just kept growing. It was supposed to be two chapters, then three, then four, then five, then seven—by the time I wrapped everything up the way I wanted to, it had landed on eleven.

Aureia’s relationships with Aymeric and Thancred have eaten away at my brain for most of this year. It wasn’t supposed to happen like this, but one of Thancred’s lines in the Heavensward patches fuelled and idea and now I’m here all these months later fully invested in a love triangle that has been way too much fun to write. This fic was an opportunity to explore asexuality in a particular light, so there’s a lot of myself in here. The writing in later chapters is some of the most vulnerable I’ve allowed myself to be lately and I’m very proud of how everything has come together.

I also think “No Greater Calamity Than the WoL’s Love Life” is an excellent use of the AO3 tags and I endeavour to use it more.

✦ Bound by Faith

I love this fic with all my heart. It’s my second favourite thing I’ve written this year and would have been my favourite if I hadn’t finished Divergence of the Heart. I am very enamoured with late game Aureia and Thancred—how much they’ve been through and how many times their relationship has been reset. I like writing them as a little older, a little more mature, a little more grounded. They’ve both been through shit and come out stronger for it, and I needed the get the moment where they are finally together out of my system.

Also writing Thancred and Urianger banter is extremely fun and one of the most enjoyable things about putting this fic together.

✦ To Ash and Ember

Rating: Mature

Listen. I had an unexplainable feral compulsion to write Aureia’s fight with Lahabrea. It wasn’t going to leave me alone until I did. I think this fic set the tone for so much of her characterization and development; this moment—both in the fic and in-game—was character defining and it’s where everything came together.

✦ A Question of Desire

Rating: Explicit

This started as a prompt and then turned into my first FFXIV smut fic. It had been a while since I had written erotica, and it was nice to visit that kind of scene with Aureia and Aymeric. Their dynamic is very soft and sweet (especially in the time period of the late Heavensward patches), and I’m very pleased with how the second part came out—especially with the hint that not everything is all right with their relationship. There are cracks, they just can’t see it yet.

✦ Bitter Frost

Rating: Teen

The transition from ARR into Heavensward is one of the most powerful moments in FFXIV for me, partially due to the attachment Aureia (and me) had to Ul’dah. This fic was a scene in my head almost immediately after playing it. I wanted to spend some time when she was at an absolute low, and develop a bit of her relationship with Alphinaud—and experiment with some ways that black mages may attempt to fend off the cold, because why not. Let a magic girl be magic.

✦ Far from Happenstance

Rating: General

I like this one! I think it was fun revisiting the very early moments of the Ul’dah questlines from Aureia’s perspective. I had a better handle on her voice here; I hadn’t entirely figured out her backstory at this point (she was keeping it a secret from me), but she started to feel like a fully-fleshed out person here.

✦ Sand and Stone

Rating: General

This was my first FFXIV fic! I wrote it shortly after finishing base ARR and I was madly rotating the final fight with Lahabrea in my head (I’ve been ruined by the Worst Ascian since that cutscene and it doesn’t even make sense!! Am I mad (affectionately) about this? YES, OF COURSE I AM. Could have chosen literally any other villain but no, this is where I had to peak.).

This fic established some repeat themes for Aureia, namely her close association with fire and the burns on her back, as well as her close friendship with Thancred and his nickname for her (Aureia was not a fleshed out character until she was Aur, nicknames really do something for me, apparently).  

✦ Untitled Post 5.3. Fic

I haven’t published this one yet since I ran out of time to finish it (trying to finish another multipart in the last two weeks of December was not something I needed to add to my plate). But I am excited to work on fics set after Aureia and Thancred get married and dig a little bit deeper into how their relationship changes through marriage. There are still difficulties to be overcome, ways that they test and support each other. I really enjoy writing established relationships, so it’s fun to poke at the evolution of everything that has come before.

A little excerpt since it's not finished yet:

He glances at her, staring at her through the curtain of hair, and his throat bobs. “I never knew that until today,” he continues. “In all our years here, all the times I have walked these battlements, not once did it occur to me to count the bloody steps. I took my aether for granted once too.” “It’s not an impossibility,” she says firmly. “You dragged yourself up here—” “And I can barely stand. i have all these fun thinky thoughts about kit and ardbert and the parallels between them.

obviously. they are both part of a whole, that whole being azem. and I love seeing how people play with the differences and similarities between their wol and azem. for me, the similarities are there, but kit has diverged uniquely from hers, in my mind both by nature and by willful choice when she has that knowledge to work with.

digging around in azem is fun and i love it, certainly, but a major part of kit's character is wanting to be a whole person distinct from both her title as wol and her connection to azem. while she treasures that legacy and takes every part of it very seriously, even grieving and feeling anger for a life sees as stolen from her, one of her biggest fears is her sense of self being lost in it. that those two things might be all anyone values about her. that fear seeps into every aspect of her life, for good or for ill. the people she keeps closest are those who see and cherish her as kit. not as azem's shard, and not as hydaelyn's chosen.

what compels me about her is the parallels with ardbert. the way they both love to a fault, often at personal expense, and are willing to give absolutely everything to protect that and those they love. their near inability to say no if they can help, if they can make a difference to even one person. to fight tirelessly for those they can yet save, even if it consumes the last of who they are. to give their all if it spares their companions even a fraction of their burden.

these traits have their roots in azem, but they both took them to another level. had it been kit reborn on the first, i can easily see her making many of the same choices as ardbert and following a similar path. i can see the roots of rage and anger we see ardbert grapple with when he reaches the end of his abilities and his despair when his all was not enough. i can see her making a desperate deal with elidibus when she felt every other avenue had been exhausted. their conversations through shadowbringers are so haunting and lovely in their ability to break my heart, and revisiting them makes me feral. so funny to me in the best way that the one person who understands her better than anyone is... well, also her. so alike, and yet, they are indeed different people, whole and unique. in another universe, they would have been simply friends. maybe even co-tanks or adventurers together. lifting one another up as needed, and sating that traveler's wanderlust together.

his memory is one she carries forward. i went a little silly and spent time getting mats so she could dye and carry a piece of his armor into dawntrail, to take him on journeys he can no longer tread alone. she will not let him fade away, either, even rejoined as they are. she will remember him, too, as a whole and separate person whom he was. whom he is. she won't let him be lost in his title or hers.

Part of why I don't play her more often is because I only play her when my husband is playing her husband, Pellian. Alas, during lulls, my husband does crazy things like 'play other games,' usually. They're based on a married couple we played in a Pathfinder campaign (this is rare for us, we usually don't play characters that are romantic with each other). She was an arcanist that set all her problems on fire and/or rattled the bones of annoying people. Obviously, she's a BLM.

I made bunny versions of all the boys, and where Bjalla was Bunny Dusk, Svend is Bunny Mercuriel:

I barely ever play him, but his fuckin' attitude cracks me up, and I know he'll pop up occasionally picture-wise, so why not acknowledge him. The main thing I decided about him, is he also left the woods after getting fed up with being a feral forest hermit ... but doesn't want to admit it, and tries to pretend that no, he's always been a city boy and no he definitely has no idea how to hunt, kill and dress wild game or anything of the sort. Who told you he did? He'll bite their faces off.

So I know this is absurd, but I have, on occasion, made other Dusks on other servers. The first Other Dusk I made during the interminable wait for 5.3 to finally release, on a server that had Road to 70. I wanted to see how far I got leveling everything before I got bored and stopped. He hit all 50s before I got tired of trying to level everything, but I sort of wound up playing through the entire MSQ with him.

So if you see a picture of Dusk with this hair, it's likely Bertrand. The funniest thing to me about ol' Bert is for some reason I think of him as the most focused of the Dusks. Something about his hair just makes him seem a little more put together to me. And yet whenever he's sad, like in the picture above, he more looks like he's trying to remember where he put his keys.

Seriously, he just had them.

The OTHER other Dusk, I made on Seraph with Farron. Dusk is going by his real name, Bellinor, and Farron is technically doing the same, using Kare. We're sort of treating it as an AU, where the boys met at the start of ARR instead of the end of Endwalker, but the reason they exist at all is a) Road to <number> makes my brain light up and b) Farron hadn't actually played the bulk of the MSQ as Farron, what with rabbit dudes not even being a thing until EW. Yes, he could do NG+, but he likes having me along to nag him to progress. And honestly, being able to spam each other with silly cutscene faces makes it all a lot more fun, imo.

I don't know what it is about THIS hair, but I think it makes him look like the biggest airhead on the planet. He is the Dumbest Dusk, and we love that for him.

Kare is relatively new to being civilized, by the way, but Bellinor is doing his best to help:

Bellinor thinks the lessons are going great.

Kare still is a regular-ass adventurer dude, Bellinor is still the WoL. Kare keeps getting dragged into shit he doesn't actually care about because this big dumb ?roommate? of his keeps making big puppy eyes whenever he asks Kare to come with him.

of note, the main trio of grownup Scions are endearing and have grown a lot and I hope for Y'shtola's and Thancred's sake, we figure out how to get them back to the First. love that they do clearly care about each other and want to stay involved even if they might go their separate ways

Estinien continues to impress me with his character growth; right at the Hydalen fight, when she exposits on everyone's arcs, she mentions the rage Estinien's traded in for love and he clearly gets embarrassed having to admit that FINE, yes, he loves things, even Ysayle and Alphy and the stupid WoL and his stupid home and he's never known peace since letting these maniacs into his life and HAHA! Estinien has feelings!

So naturally him having to meet Alphinaud's mom and then probably a.) panic because the Leveilleurs are like... rich rich, and he is a feral cat, and b.) PANIC because oh no, he has a family again and seeing Alphinaud with his mom reminds Estinien of his own mom and he has a little brother again and his surrogate brother's mom also loves him and oh no he's not a feral cat anymore he got adopted, SHIT

Alphy as always is my special little guy and he now confidently embraces sentiment and saying the things he thinks and feels and believes, and god, he's such a good and gentle character, I love him so much. Getting to say thanks to him and Estinien both isn't enough, Alphinaud is the reason she's a Hero at all and not just a killing machine with a conscience, he reminded her to hope and to try, he's the best

Alisaie and G'raha's moments were cute but nothing especially revelatory or reflective. I did finally figure out why they always get thrown into situations together tho; because they are both tiny hyperactive adrenaline junkies who want to impress the WoL SO BAD and are red themed, so, appropriate! They tuckered themselves out and passed out on a bench, adorable.

And Tataru also finally made me a good outfit! truly, everyone's character arcs have been resolved :)

Currently Reading:  Ok... so... I actually haven't read any sort of published novel since... 2011, with A Storm of Crows I think? So I used to read a shit ton, but it was 11th grade and my friends were like 'You're still reading kids books? Read something for grown ups instead' (I was rereading Percy Jackson at the time, my beloved). So I gave it a try with a 'grown up' fantasy series and... fuck GoT it was awful and I decided if that's what adult literature was like, I didn't want any part of it. So I quit reading entirely.

Last Movie: Bullet Train, months ago. I don't like watching movies - I'm huge into the behind the scenes stuff, cinematography, lighting, direction, costume design etc etc so it makes it hard to watch movies when my brain won't stop analyzing and criticizing everything (honestly modern cinema is so full of people just 'sending it' for the next big paycheck, the heart is just gone). But my husband insisted I watch this one and you know what? It was actually really well made, I was impressed.

Craving: More time. More time to finish these cosplays (Twelve have mercy the con is in a week and a half), more time to write, more time to decompress. Also craving a Chromebook/laptop/portable writing device that doesn't freeze when I type more than 5 letters in a row...

Last show: Last narrative-focused show? Uhhhhhh.... I watched the first season of The Walking Dead in 2012 and I legit can't think of anything more recent. I just don't enjoy watching things much, I'd rather be doing something, and I'm such a snob when it comes to screenwriting/characters that most things just don't appeal to me. Other than that the last non-scripted show I watched was Restaurant: Impossible.

Favourite colour: Wine/burgundy! That deep, dark, blood red with just a hint of purple (in case you couldn't tell since it's the color my WoL wears in every outfit)

Unrelated Obsession: Unrelated? I'd say writing but that's kind of related... So, horses? I mean that's just always my obsession.

Any pets: Uh... yeah. I myself have two horses. And then... we have a shit ton of cats. So in 2020 strays kept showing up at our house and then they'd have babies, eventually we managed to catch them all and get them fixed and now some of them have chosen to move in. Shelters are full all across the state, rescues and fosters are full. So now we have... 10 cats that live inside (it's a large house) and then another six/seven that are still feral outside but fixed at least. Nothing much we can do about it, but keeping them inside keeps them safe and saves the wildlife outside, too.

Do you have a crush on anyone: An eternal crush on my husband. He's just amazing. Soft. Adorable. Handsome. Perfect. Goofy. Gorgeous. Smart. Creative. Loving. So many more words. 12 years together in May!

Favourite fictional character: Assuming player characters/WoLs don't count, Elena Fisher from Uncharted. She was the first female character I encountered who was just... normal. Not a token female, not sexualized eye candy, not walking boobs without a personality, she was... a real person, a real character in her own right, whose gender didn't change who she was. And I fell in love with that back in 2007 (I was in middle school then, so it was kind of a big deal for me). She only got better as the years went by, I still love her.

The last place you traveled: Depends on your definition of 'travel'. On a literal sense probably Portland, but since both that and Seattle are practically in my backyard I don't really count those. Other than that, Philadelphia I think, for a wedding.

I love my WoLs, other WoLs, the story, the lore, shared AUs, regular AUs, the list goes on so while not an RP blog I do try to do ask games and the like (time & energy permitting...I have a bit of a backlog)

I tag expansion-specific content with “ffxiv: expac name” and when there’s something particularly spoilery I try to tag “expac name spoilers”. Tagging specific patch spoilers is a little more iffy - especially for anything before EW seeing as I flew through from the Garuda fight to the end of Shadowbringers patches in just a little over a year.

My main WoLs I will be posting about are my main girlie Muireann Uais and the idol magical girl of my heart Sami Fashonti, I’ve got a couple of others but these two (and their various shards) are who will most likely be showing up. Muireann Uais

Blurb-o: Insatiably curious with little regard for her own safety, Muireann will do quite literally anything For Science. Typically found with her nose in a book or up to her elbows at an archaeology dig hunting for the secrets of lost magical arts, her thirst for knowledge (and power) is tainted with a deep, debilitating fear of losing any of her ever-growing family.

Though initial impressions (outside of combat) are of a well-mannered young lady of the Shroud, she is quick to judge and anger, slow to forgive, and can hold a grudge for years. If first impressions are through combat, an academic field she’s interested in, or the benefits of expressing emotions through giant sharp weapons, Muireann has a much more feral energy.

Muireann has a chronic condition which causes pain and fatigue and as such she generally teleports or travels by mount and is followed around by one out of her collection of carbuncles, egis, and fairies at any given time.

Muireann was born Ralenne Canaux and due to a short series of misunderstandings as a child, believed she needed an “adventuring name” in order to pursue her dream of traveling the world and helping people as an adventurer. Muireann Uais is the name she decided on.

Pandora, fall of Allag: (The Allagan Tempest) Allagan scientist and administrator, overlooked and underestimated her whole career. Responsible for most of the atrocities on Azys Lla. Does not live long enough to make good on her promise to Tiamat to make amends after being awakened and seeing the horrors of Allag for what they were.

Ufufu Ufu, War of the Magi: (magiposting) A scholar of Nym desperately trying to stem the progression of the green death amongst her colleagues. Responsible for maintaining the wards on Wanderer’s Palace after it was sealed before the flood.

Barbariccia, the 13th reflection: yeah look I’m being extremely self-indulgent here but there are themes and unhinged and violent power hungry woman is a big one.

Sami Fashonti

She/her // WHM main (while she’s in ARR at least) // naive teen // ~ idol ~

Euterpe, Ancient: A young protégé of Venat, Euterpe was very young when she was given the title of Azem. Her enthusiasm and love of all living beings and the star itself was the defining characteristic of her time on the Convocation. While previous Azems gave reports on their travels, Euterpe instead preferred to learn songs from people she met or compose new songs to capture the essence of particularly beautiful and different places. This non-standard approach to her work clashed with the expectations of her self-appointed mentor Emet-Selch.

Shipping Game: Arenvald?

Ohh this one is interesting to think about! I feel like Arenvald is a super underrated character who deserves a lot more love xD In my heart I ship him with Fordola, but I think he and Nahte could actually do quite well together!

Arenvald is a genuinely good guy. He cares about people, even his enemies, and though he gets beat to hell and back with a consistency to rival the WoL, it doesn't make him bitter. Even when he's crippled. That takes some seriously incredible strength of will and compassion. Though I think it's also super, super important for his recovery that he has friends like Fordola and Alphinaud to help support him, and ways to keep himself busy and still feel capable - that stubborn love is something Nahte can really resonate with.

They have a lot of shared trauma, Arenvald has been around since the massacre at the Waking Sands which absolutely wrecked Nahte. They're also both halfbreeds with estranged fathers who have had difficulty finding a place in their own cultures. Nahte's mom was way nicer, though. It's ok Arenvald she'll adopt you.

Arenvald is pretty... unassuming? might be the word? I'm not sure that he'd initiate anything with Nahte or expect the affection to be reciprocated. And Nahte might assume Arenvald isn't interested in him that way and not want to risk making things awkward by asking. Someone would probably have to play matchmaker, or one of them would need to have a "poorly" timed Echo attack xD

But it could be very wholesome and I could see them both being pretty sappy and romantic with each other.

(I also headcanon that Nahte was one of the healers involved in trying to save Arenvald when he loses the use of his legs, too. Something else for Nahte to feel guilty about not being able to completely fix :') )

With LYRHA.... mm. If this was a meeting before she's with X'rhun, I think Arenvald's age would work against him. Though he and X'rhun are both what I'd call Tragically Idealistic, and clearly compassionate and patient with feral gremlins (cough Fordola), X'rhun has the benefit of decades of experience which Lyrha came to respect. It would be a lot easier for Lyrha to dismiss Arenvald's good nature as stupidity and inexperience that's going to get him killed soon.

After she's with X'rhun, though? She would probably have more respect for Arenvald, too, and wouldn't mind a fling. Being said, she might still feel a little threatened by him. The hardships he faced in his youth didn't turn him bitter like her own did. I could be wrong, but Arenvald also doesn't exactly strike me as the type to want romance/sex without commitment, and I'm not sure Lyrha would be able to reciprocate the kind of devotion he'd want from a partner, at least not on a compatible time-frame

tl;dr MAMOOL JA LORE

I've loved what we've gotten of the Mamool Ja from ARR, where they're a tribal race that apparently isn't even acknowledged by the Grand Companies of Eorzea as a so-called "beast tribe." They're outsiders and a nuisance when they're not An Actual Problem and they're apparently barely a step above feral, slaves to biological instinct according to certain FATEs in La Noscea--and yet at the same time they're powerful enough to be L50 dungeon end bosses, threats to the budding Warrior of Light, an individual strong enough to give the Garlean Empire pause.

And now we get to see WHY this incredible dichotomy exists, with the Mamool Ja who come to Eorzea as sellswords deliberately downplaying their intelligence for greater profit, turning their narrative into one of cunning strategists.

Which is almost immediately turned around again with Gulool Ja Ja, who uses his cunning mind not to rule by force, but by wisdom. Not to lead his people, but to guide them.

We learn of the Blessed Siblings and their power, which has me absolutely SHAKING Square Enix because of the implications: do they indeed have TWO souls? If so, that would make them sixteen soul parts in one body, compared to WoL's nine (and compared to their single-headed siblings' eight). How does 16/28 soul parts compare to an Unsundered's 14/14?

Where are the Blessed Sisters?

And I love how hard Square Enix committed on them being lizards, with their near-complete lack of sexual dimorphism.

I'm profoundly curious about the social status of the Doppro, non-entities as far as the creation of Blessed Siblings are concerned: what do they bring to Mamool Ja society that the Hoobigo and the Boonewa don't? What has ensured their survival?

And the complexities of Gulool Ja Ja's ascension from Autarch to Dawnservant: 'proof' that Blessed Siblings are best suited to rule, while the traditionalists ignore how Gulool Ja Ja united Tural which has nothing to do with his being Blessed Siblings at all. No shows of strength, but rather grace: humility, diplomacy, a willingness to embrace the cultures of the people he sought to bring together and to show them how he would serve their needs.

But if he presses that point to the traditionalists, they'd just dig their heels in. Bakool Ja Ja and his place in the contest need to exist: the traditionalists of Mamook need their own champion, need to feel represented here, in order to accept the final results.

And Bakool Ja Ja himself: with the hindsight of later revelations, his early actions are no longer those of a bully with no more purpose than to get a rise from others, but an indication of the pain he's experienced in his own life. He's an angry young man lashing out at the world for the cruelty of his own corner of it, and the revelations about the depths of that cruelty, the actions he takes to bring an end to that, and the way he learns to make use of that rage to protect his people are made all the more convincing by what might just be the best performance by a VA of the entire expansion.

That's not even getting into Zoraal Ja's efforts to feel like he has a place in society. Not Blessed, so not of use to the traditionalists, yet that does not absolve him of the pressures of both firstborn and the first and only son of the Blessed. I'm frustrated that they chose to rehash Stormblood's Resonance with him; it's understandable that he leans into the yearning to have been born Blessed, but the technological aspects of his approach are stale, and I wish they had gone in a different direction here.

tl;dr I love Mamool Ja, please make them playable! I would Fantasia in a heartbeat and never look back.

Look don't I don't really care about whether or not you think Dawntrail as a whole is good or bad.

Instead talk abt what makes you go ABSOLUTELY FERAL from it (or ffxiv in general).

What is it that hits your brain in just the right way to make you fall into a never ending rabbit hole of madness and obsession. A rabbit hole from which you emerge from with endless and absolute knowledge about super niche subjects that may come up in conversations once or twice.

a character? Plot beat? Theme? Job rotations??? A dungeon with absolutely unhinged lore? A random ass sidequest that is somehow relevant still today and lives rent free in your brain???

Go wild w those plz, I need more of those.
