My mum is a fucking hero to the autistic community in my opinion.

Context:

My identical twin sister and I are both diagnosed with autism however she was diagnosed at 4 or 5 and I was diagnosed at like 7 or 8 because the doctors (is that the right term lmao) thought it was more obvious with her (I didn’t know how else to word it I’m sorry in advance)

Anyways-

Even before either of us were diagnosed, my mum ALWAYS made sure to tell us in detail what we were doing. For example, when we walked past the nursery on a day that we didn’t have nursery, she’d say “We aren’t going to nursery today, we’re going somewhere else” or if we didn’t know what we were doing one day she’d say “we’re going to do this today, and then later we’re going to do that” yk?

I tended to ‘act out’ the most at school and I’d always get in trouble, specifically for the first 4 years of primary school. I had always seen myself as a bad child and so I told my mum my concerns. However she reassured me and said “No you definitely weren’t a bad child. You didn’t know how to express yourself or what you wanted or needed properly” istg I was close to tears—

Our first ever holiday was to Disneyland Paris in 2012, so we were both in Year 2 and like 5-6 years old. My principal had literally called my mum crazy for even attempting to take two neurodivergent children on a plane to a different country and he thought she would’ve wasted her money if it didn’t work. And she told him “True..but then I would never have known if I never even tried” she even told me she specifically chose Disneyland as our first holiday because she knew we would be more likely to want to go and try planes if it was something we were interested in.

My mum had borrowed a book from the library one day about autism because even we didn’t really get it. She sat us down and talked us through it and pointed out some things we do.

Then this year in April on the 2nd, to acknowledge Autism Acceptance Month/Day, she posted something on instagram (I can’t find what she posted but it had blue, the jigsaw and the ribbon). My sister and I explained why that would be offensive to some people in the community but we also said that we didn’t mind it. But then she took it down. We asked why she did it and we also said that we never told her to take it down and she said “Because if it’s offensive and harmful to you and your community, I don’t want to promote it”. Then that same day, we explained to her what’s acceptable and not and showed her this photo

And we explained what masking and stimming is. She then said to us “I hope you two feel comfortable enough to unmask in front of me and stim freely”

In conclusion, my mum is a fucking icon and I love her sm.

Going to the Concert Made Me Wanna Watch the Show Again

Redefining Building

Kulo Sena is well on its way to being something resembling an uberhood, with four subhoods, two "downtowns" as regions of the Spirit World, one university (also representing the Spirit World, and there are at least three more in the pipelines) and way too many lots to build. And you know me and building.

Here's the thing, though: I've been on a major text-string replacing kick in my TS2 game. I've replaced strings for the names of the seasons, the days of the week, all the romantic interactions, the zodiac signs, you name it. All to give my game more of a fantasy flavour, reflecting the worldbuilding I've already done for it, and also to help me feel more at ease with romance as a gameplay element.

So I was chatting with my mum this evening, and we were talking about doing the same sort of thing for my own view of building - reframing it as something other than a tedious chore that I have to keep doing because no downloaded lots ever meet my sims' needs. Here's what we've come up with...

If you play TS2 as a life simulator (as opposed to a building simulator or a shooter) then you are probably the kind of player who loves your sims. Like I am. Therefore, building is an act of kindness. It's what you do to ensure that your sims don't starve or freeze on an empty lot, and that's what makes the actual playing bit possible. And if, like me, you loathe the task, even if you're only building for pixels... that makes it closer to a truly selfless or charitable act.

With that worked out, I'm actually motivated to get the first few households somewhere to live... yay! It just goes to show that the language we use to describe things and the stories we tell ourselves about what those things signify are immensely powerful. And on that note, I'm off to nurture my sims by giving them a roof over their heads. :)
