Favorite character:

Xena!! Everything I could possibly want in a female character, and a fandom that largely enjoys it rather than downplaying it.

I loooove that the writers went into the show (Xena, not her first appearance on Hercules probs) essentially writing her as a male archetype almost no concessions to the fact that she's played by Lucy Lawless other than pronouns and some het. She's cold and stoic - it's not until the first season finale that she even really displays a raw emotion other than mid-fight glee, including when her own mother draws a sword on her, and when she has to kill a man she loves to some extent. She's the strongest, toughest, most competent person in any room at all times, and everyone knows it and defers to her, absolutely including men. Early on there are a few scenes where she's hit on and punches dudes, but that actually goes away pretty quick as she just tends to command a certain sense of respect. It's an ideal female power fantasy - not to survive patriarchal violence, but to live without even having to spare a thought for it.

She's complex and nuanced and the narrative is very interested in exploring her as a three dimensional character.

She's formerly evil and still revels in violence, and it's amazing. She's often on the verge of going too dark again and needing to be pulled back from the edge, and she snaps in a few episodes including one where she attempts to murder Gabrielle, pre-meditated and all. She's framed like a horror movie monster in a few episodes, something I always love to see in a protagonist.

And on the flip side, she's fun! She steadily loosens up the more time she spends with Gabrielle doing good, and she can be very playful at times, and it's awesome to see in contrast to the first season.

I'll never be over her and idt there'll ever be another female character who can truly compare. Xena is a product of the tone of the show, and that tone is dead now.

Least Favorite character:

Borias, mainly for his appearance in The Debt as the only man who has ever had physical power over Xena - while her legs were broken - and for clitblocking Lao Ma.

Xena has the best clipshows of any show I've ever seen. Almost always worth watching for the absolutely delightful framing devices.

An unpopular opinion:

I get shallow entertainment out of the scenes where Xena seduces men in the later seasons lol. Like firstly, I love that the show really pointedly toes a line and she never actually sleeps with them past like season 2, because she's in a relationship with Gabrielle. I also love that they show Gabrielle being annoyed or jealous if she gets into it. The show is blatantly playing both sides and trying to appeal to het viewers as well, but very deliberate in never contradicting X/G and I can appreciate that.

But also I love how dominant Xena almost always is, both in bed and in how she just interacts with men, and how it's always framed as something she wants/how she behaves by default rather than something she does for the dudes, who are generally more ambivalent about her topping. Like, ultimately it's a fantasy for subby male viewers, but it doesn't feel like it so it's enjoyable to me.

This is popular with the het fans lol, but they're the minority so it still counts.

Najara!!!! I absolutely adored her in her first episode, she's an amazing foil to Xena. She would've been a perfect recurring villain after Callisto, with her moral ambiguity, her deliberate choice to kill vs Xena's bloodlust, her more grandiose ideals vs Xena's more do good when its in front of you philosophy, etc.

Then her second episode just eviscerates her character and turns her into a caricature of a ~crazy girl~ and it's awful. The actress probably wasn't available for a recurring role, but like, she could've been written off more respectfully, or never given a second episode at all to assassinate her character. Boo.

favourite friendship:

Gabrielle and Aphrodite, I think. They're very cute together. Though shout out to Gabrielle and Ephiny, since I did find it quite touching to see her again in season 6.

Lets start with episode twelve of season eight of Criminal Minds: Zugzwang Quick summary of the episode/following episodes: Spencer Reid, a Behavioral Analyst for the FBI. He is slightly paranoid that he may have schizophrenia (like his mother) and so he frequently calls in to talk about his symptoms. He finds out that Maeve Donovan, the doctor/specialist he's been talking to has been being stalked for a long time. Blah blah blah, stalker kidnaps her, Reid freaks, solves puzzles to save her, SHE GETS KILLED BECAUSE STALKER KILLED THEMSELVES AND HER TOO, and Reid has a vicious mourn session.

I wanna see Jason crying over Adrien's dead body because Marinette or Chloe or some other person was so obsessed over him. I wanna see Tim hugging Jason because he knew that Jason doesn't love just anyone, and that Jason was hard to love back. I want Bruce to be supportive of his son dating a guy he only met because he made a few calls to the hospital. Yes, I want Adrien to work as a Neurologist. Has my dude ever said what he wanted to do? No. He's a neurologist. I want to see Jason mournfully informing everyone Adrien knew of his death and then beating Gabriel up for not caring. I want to see Jason struggle past drug use. I want to see Jason pull himself from the field because he can't save everyone, and while he knew that, it hurts so much more, because he thought he could. I want to see him BEG Talia to throw Adrien's attacker into the Lazarus Pit so that he himself can kill them brutally. I want to see autistic anxious mess chess lover Jason mourn a love he never really got to see. Because yes, Jason's first time ever seeing Adrien's face was when it was at gunpoint for the final time.

Secondly, episode eight of season one of The Flash: Flash vs. Arrow

This one's mostly just crack. I want to see Jason have magical rage and try to beat Adrien's Red Hood Hater of a friend up. Does it work? Nah, Chat Noir stops him, happy ending, maybe some cuddles. I don't have near as much thoughts as I do with the first one, unfortunately.

Lets try our hand at a movie, Disturbing Behavior Our little summary is this: New girl at isolated school, cliques and stuff, suddenly everyone's a stickler for the rules. Why? Implants. Why? MCR Explained it well enough. Here's the thing. Teenagers are horny. When the implanted kids have any sexual impulses, they murder the object of their affections. The island becomes a death trap for this girl, her new friend, and her other new friend. Other new friend 100% gets implanted because writers are predictable. They get off the island, other new friend somehow escapes, but we don't get a sequel.

I want to see Adrien move to a Gotham school and watch it lose it's shit. I want Hatter to somehow worm his way into teaching at Gotham Academy because he's... I'm not going to go there, and kids starting to RANDOMELY turn around on their heels from delinquent to teacher's pet to murderer overnight. I want to see Tim (skipped a few grades) be Adrien's friend (Insert Jason as love interest because I loooove a good protective older bro Jason), and Bernard, Mr. Conspiracy theorist, is other friend. Yes, other friend, the one who does weed and then gets implanted. I want to see them struggle to fight their friends in costume until they find out what's going on. I want to see a few of them kidnapped by Hatter (who was experimenting alongside Hugo Strange in Arkham) and narrowly escape. I want to see. Them. Get. Mind. Controlled. Kinda. Because I want the angst.

Things I love about Miguel O’Hara and find funny about his comics. Spoilers for his comic in the 90s and a few from ACTSV

- This man cares so much for Lyla. While everyone sees her as just AI, he actually like talks to her as a person. There’s a scene where I think her code starts to break but he asks her to form an opinion. And she tells him she can’t cause she’s not human. Yet he tells her “you can do it, that’s it…” like 😭😭😭 (meaning if you like Miguel, you’d have a praise kink)

- mans also didn’t know where poor people lived in his world…in his comics if you didn’t have a job or made a shit ton of money, you lived “downtown” aka the ground. It made me sigh cause that means he had that rich boy awakening moment when he fell down to the ground.

- loves Gabriel sm. Growing up he was that big brother that held Gabe when their folks fought. He didn’t care that they are only half brothers. 😭 Gabe said that Miguel used to cuddle him when their parents fought when they slept so he could keep him calm🥺🥺

- MANS HAS A POTTY MOUTH BABFBDHS Every volume he’s swearing and it’s funny cause I’m comics they really couldn’t so when he says “I’m cleaning up your shocking mess” in the movie it made me snicker. Shock = Fuck.

- Miguel looooves Dana (Ik he cheats later but I haven’t seen why) but he’s so in love with her it makes me sappy. There’s a scene where he has to save Dana and Tyler (I think) from Omega and says he will trade for Dana and Omega can keep Tyler. Ik it’s cause Tyler is the one that turns on Miguel, but as Spider-Man you think you would bargain for both hostages, no he wants his fiancé back in one piece.

- had his dramatic identity crisis novela style in the rain. Why is it always in the rain.

- he journals!! Well more like makes recordings with Lyla. She turns into like a lil reporter with glasses as he speaks and talks him through feelings🥺 again their relationship makes me sad that she’s only AI cause honestly…he needs a Lyla. (I don’t like Dana…SHE FUCKING UGHHH she has history with Gabe)

But yeah. Also the humor that he has, it’s that Spider-Man humor in fights but he’s more sarcastic/flat with it. Like our other spider people who laugh and have that upbeat tone, mans does not. Plus he was hella nervous on his first villain chases literally went “I need to say something cool” and mans said “hi…that was not cool”

Can you share with us some things you like about a friend in need?

:) sure

1. my tag for past-Xena is 'love her feral' and the reason for that is her journey to redemption for me is given (even) more nuance when the show explores her history (as the destroyer of nations, literally killing whole towns/villages) in a new meaningful way. yes, we've had this exploration before (her dynamic with callisto is entirely about this, and her emotional destruction with borias). what gives it new meaning this time is that xena is at peace with herself. she is fully trusting of gabrielle, both as a romantic partner and as her war general. she is willing completely to meet the consequences of her actions without the burden of her guilt. she is at her most evolved, I believe, when she makes the choice to pass on. I don't think it's said enough in fandom that xena wasn't just a bad person atoning. she was an awful, violent and megalomaniacal human being. what began as pure defense when she protected her village turned to something brutal and bloody. we're talking hundreds of thousands of people. In AFIN alone she killed 40,000 people. BY. ACCIDENT. in her rage and her recklessness. her unthinking. we know she can overcome these things because she is one of the smartest and most empathic warriors, but time and time again we have seen her choose not to. she knows right from wrong, she always had, but in AFIN her concern is simply about righting her wrong for its own sake, with what she's learned from gabrielle's spiritual quest for peace.

2. gabrielle's spiritual quest and xena's spiritual quest were always opposing forces within the narrative. the show always always explored how xena's violence countered and affected gabrielle's pacifism and vice versa. some of the shows best moments are when these roles are challenged in big (end of s4 with the ides) and small (xena's many skills are all considered peaceful, she's a physician, a seamstress, she has a lovely voice, etc) ways. AFIN is when the roles are no longer just challenged but fully reversed. it begins this way with gabrielle star gazing and xena miraculously joining her, joyful, sweet and optimistic, and gabrielle being the one surprised and alert, listening for intruders. AFIN ends with xena choosing the peace of death and atonement and gabrielle deciding having xena alive justified letting those forty thousand ppl suffer in eternal torment. it's bittersweet and even a little messed up lol but it's not out of the blue or strange that it happened. it's the culmination of the show's exploration of violence vs. nonviolence through xena and gabrielle in a way that condemns neither and honors both. and challenges both characters. so up until the very end of the series, they have agency and they have tough choices to make. that’s brilliant.

3. I love love loooove japanese samurai movies so a lot of the concepts and landscapes of the episode were familiar to me. im american so obviously can't speak to the samurai warrior's code or japanese culture in a meaningful way. what I understood from watching these films and reading books like myamoto musashi's book of five rings and sun tzu's the art of war is that the warrior's way is very different and much more introspective, quiet, solitary and dignified than the western/american way. weapons like katanas are much more spiritual in their very creation and they have more meaning in the hand of a samurai, and in AFIN even more meaning in the hand of a non-samurai warrior, a foreigner, an outsider. xena has been in this space all through the series, in her own way. similarly, things like death by suicide (called harakiri) and seeking honor through a swift beheading by the enemy who defeated you are all things that hold much more spiritual importance irt honor and retaining it than here in the west. in western culture, suicides and beheadings are all considered ignominious defeats. the ultimate proof of loss of dignity, pride and power. in japanese culture as I understand it, it is the exact opposite. so while many see AFIN as xena's defeat, it is actually the most honorable meaningful death for a warrior like her. at the hands of a strong, relentless enemy and for the honor of her soul. in AFIN she has reached a meaningful existence as a warrior and found peace in that life. in western culture, her death is a loss. but in the framework of the episode, it is an apotheosis.

4. it's one of the shows strongest episodes narratively and visually. beautiful to look at, full of expressive shots and wonderful acting. there's such resonance in this episode back to the themes and plots that made the show. it's about xena's past, as it has always been. it's about protecting people. it's about the warrior within us and the peace as well. it's everything that is great about xena writ small. xena and gabrielle don't physically get their endgame but they are together always. there's no separating them. I never saw xena's death as an end to that connection, especially not when the mythology of the series says that the dead can hear the living and that xena and Gabrielle are destined to meet again and again and again through resurrection. so we know for a fact xena will indeed be there, listening, guiding Gabrielle, and that they will meet again and have different roles. the show always played with these concepts and AFIN is no different imo. gabrielle has essentially taken xena iin entirely. she's the girl with the chakram now. the difference is that there's no burden of guilt, no self-loathing, no noise. it's a beautiful episode precisely for this dichotomy and bc it’s just a beautifully made episode..

overall opinion:

ahhh this one. this might be my all-time favourite movie. I am constantly torn between telling others about it and just keeping this little gem all to myself. but here we are. I’m putting it out there. because I think it deserves to be seen.

the first time I saw this movie was yeeears ago when I randomly stumbled across the DVD in a store (yeah, that’s how long ago it was). I’m not someone who likes romantic movies so I have no idea why I picked it up because from the title to the description it just screamed love story to me.

nevertheless I decided to get it. and jesus am I glad I did. now, this is not by any means an exciting movie – but if you love character driven stories definitely give this a chance. the cast is absolutely incredible. 

the story revolves around pursy, a young woman who learns one day that her redneck boyfriend forgot to tell her that her estranged mother had died. she leaves immediately for the funeral only to realise once she gets to new orleans that she missed it. she learns that she inherited a house from her mother but when she goes there she discovers two men (john travolta and gabriel macht) who tell her they all inherited it, hoping it will make her leave again. but to their dismay she decides to stay and ride it out – hoping that they will leave.

the rest of the plot revolves around those three characters, their histories, their relationships, their development. it is a story full of heart with character development at its center – my favourite kind of story – and all three main actors, scarlett, john, and gabriel, are phenomenal in their respective roles. 

I still watch this movie every year on my birthday (and a couple times throughout the year), because I grew so attached to it in a way. I think it will forever hold a very special place in my heart.

the cinematography is also really amazing, with the beautiful landscapes and vibes (and exceptional music!) of new orleans.

why it stayed with me:

the part that gets me every time is the ending… with the title and throughout the whole movie you are convinced it is a love story – pursy and lawson anyone? – and in the end, during those final minutes you realise... it is a love story. but it’s not the kind of love story between a couple. this is a love story between a father and his daughter. and just, the voice over in the end. cue the tears, every time, even after seeing it more than 20 times by now.

favourite scene / moment:

when pursy sits at the train station for hours reading «the heart is a lonely hunter» which eventually makes her go back. and that scene by the lake when she realises bobby is her father, and she starts crying because she’s sad nobody saw her grow up and he says he was there and I just… FEELS.

I also in general loooove the music. I really need to visit new orleans someday. it looks absolutely magical.

interesting trivia / fun facts:

writer/director shainee gabel adapted the screenplay from the previously unpublished novel "off magazine street" by ronald everett capps. capps' son, grayson capps, appears in the film and contributed six songs to its soundtrack.

also, not necessarily a movie fact but a personal one: the book pursy reads before she decides to go back is called «the heart is a lonely hunter» by carson mccullers. I loved the movie so much I wanted to know why this of all books played such a pivotal role in it, so I went and bought it. «the heart is a lonely hunter» is a beautiful story of outcasts that counts as a modern classic (published in 1940). I highly recommend the book too.

What do all your TGS ships say about you?

Henry/Robert: Has reread Bleeding Heart multiple times. You’re an absolute sucker for the “tragic college romance” trope. Becomes a snarky love/hate OT3 with the inclusion of Edward and his hilariously in-denial insults. Uses “Hastie” as a cute nickname. Day drinking with expensive red wine is a quality aesthetic. Big fan of dramatic theatre bisexuals. You’re always down to brutally criticize oppressive Victorian heteronormativity. Still worried about Robert’s wife and Henry’s inevitable reveal. Prepare for suffering.

Henry/Edward: Takes the meaning of self-depreciation to a whole new level. Utilizes audio/visual hallucinations in really bizarre ways. Gets a kick out of the Lodgers being perpetually confused by the situation. Doesn’t know a damn thing about chemistry but tries to make sense of it anyway. Lives for the pettiness, drama, and self-sabotage thrown back and forth between them. You try to sing both parts of “Confrontation” every time. Usually has an OT3 if anybody else is involved.

Henry/Jasper: An early shipper who loves scientific technobabble and freaking out over cute dogs/cryptids/anything. Covering Henry in sparkles is a time-honoured tradition. “Seduce me with rogue science~” is a constant mood. Perpetually on the hunt for Mothman’s ass. Wants more Zozi dammit.

Henry/Morcant: A classic. Earliest proponent of Jekyll being a furry. Fond of terrifying fairy tales and embracing one’s beastly side. Also on the hunt for Mothman’s ass. Loves the intense noir look of Bleeding Heart. Dying to see Morcant rip someone to shreds in full comic colour glory. Jasper’s gained a cool new wolf aunt to show him the ropes. Personally, you want to abandon all society and roam the forest as a bog witch, but here you are instead. I’m not judging.

Edward/Rachel: You love the take-no-shit snarky bi solidarity. Big fan of the “how do I tell my boss I’m in love with his outlaw assistant when they both keep disappearing on me” plot. They’re voted “Most likely couple to end up covered head to toe in blood and just laugh it off”. You endlessly pour over old concept art on Deviantart for more cute and hilarious moments between them.

Henry/Rachel: You’re either an Edward/Rachel/Henry OT3 shipper, or a hardcore Paraphernalia fan who decided to stay despite the drastic shift in plot, tone, and Rachel’s reworked backstory. Still thinks the aviator goggles are a good look for Henry. Looooves Ghibli flight sequences more than life itself. Really into clockpunk and music boxes.

Rachel/Jasper: Every awkward interaction is a BIG MOOD for you. Adores the country mouse/city mouse dichotomy. Everyone in the comic is a terrible wingman but it still works. Probably falling down a Wiki rabbit hole researching old Victorian food recipes, West Country accents, and Rromani settlements in East London. Human embodiment of the classic ✿＼(｡-_-｡) “Kick his ass, baby. I got yo flower.” meme

Edward/Lucy: Either has no idea what the 90’s musical is and is thrilled with Hyde’s cute hero-worship of a badass criminal leader, or is absolutely starving for a version of the musical that treats her better than she got. You can’t wait for Edward to actually meet her in canon and make a complete fool of himself. She could kick you in the face and you’d probably thank her. Lives and breathes for the flair and unnecessary parkour of Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate. Busy researching weird and complicated schemes the real Forty Elephants actually pulled off.

Henry/Frankenstein: … you might have wandered in from the Penny Dreadful fandom expecting something different (oops). Either that or you’ve been on board since 2010 and the unexpected gender switch was a really weird curveball. Still wondering what happened to Walton in all this mess.

Henry/Utterson: You’re still salty Gabriel’s not included and have made a whole backstory dedicated specifically to getting him into the plot. Expect hilarious legal shenanigans, terrible hide-and-seek skills, more Lanyon drama, and a drastic increase in bad puns. Likely has spent the most hours rereading the novella out of anyone. How do you write a gaslamp crime thriller with no murder yet? You find a way.

Edward/That Couple: Who are they? What are their stories? What kind of rowdy bar fights and crazy threesomes do they get up to? Who knows. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Make your own conclusions. Everybody’s bi and probably gonna die early from some disease anyway. Drink absinthe. Fuck the peelers. Party like it’s Soho in 1885.

Edward/Creature: You’ve got a big green monster and a little green monster, what more could you ask for? Old Universal monster movies are your jam. Probably fed up with humanity in general, but what’s new? Creature’s #done face gives you life.

Archer/Griffin: You love the fantastic potential of the Lodgers’ inventions and finding new hilarious ways for them to backfire. Has likely read “The Invisible Man”, but disregards it entirely except for the swearing. Probably prefers the LXG movie over the comic book. Fond of belligerent sexual tension, getting into ridiculous arguments, and dramatic drunken confessions. Archer is a disaster and everybody in the Society knows it.

Lavender/Flowers: Ahhhh, you love the smell of hopeless Victorian lesbians in the morning. Smells like bouquets of violets, lilies, and lavender, and also slightly smoking malfunctioning insects. You live and breathe for campy steampunk. The Lodgers are an infinite source of drama for this pairing, but also filled with ride-or-die geniuses willing to lend a hand in the case of pining lovesick idiots like them.

Frankenstein/Elizabeth: Immensely surprised by canon science wives but definitely pleased. Secretly wishes Elizabeth was still alive against all odds. Probably has read Carmilla or other gothic lesbian tragedies.

145: Night or Day: the only thing i love during the day is to go tanning outside. beside that, i love the night because its so calm?? like almost no one is up so i can just go outside ride my bike or just sit in my house and do my stuff and just listening to my music

107: College: HAHAHA my opinion on college. jeeez what an experience.i could write an essay on this but in a nutshell, it has so many good and bad sides but boy i wouldnt be the same if i wasnt studying in one. i learned so many things on myself because college is a thing that push you to your limits or even more. sometimes, you ask yourself if its all worth it, if you are going to go through your semester and the next thing you know, its already the end because time goes so FAST. 

99: Went to a movie theater: the last time i “went” was beginning of summer break so during april or may but the cinema had a power failure so i havent see the movie i wanted to watch :( beside that, i dont recall because i dont rly have time and money to go to the movies :/
