I LOVE James.

I love him but know almost NOTHING about him (canon and Fanon wise)

I hate how he would bully/pick on Keith but he grew up, grew out of it, therefore I love him. I also love his character design, hehe

Watching Tiny Keith beat him up was thrilling and one thing I wished happened in season 8 is when the paladins (+ Coran, can't forget Coran he's such a gorgeous man) and the pilots and the people from the garrison were having one of their many meetings (I think it was the first one they had, actually. I can't remember) and I someone said smth that someone else didn't agree with and Shiro was try calm them down and they just weren't having it and James started yelling at them about chain of command and following orders from superior or some shit and we see Keiths face and I cannot put into words how badly I wanted someone to point out that Shiro technically wasn't their leader anymore and that current leader (Keith) had yet to tell them to shut up and how dare you you need us to save your sorry asses stfu and aahshdgdjdjdjdgfg

But they're not like that and they wouldn't say that but every time I think of James I think of this and I just sit and think.

My all time favourite ship with James is Jeith/Jaith because YES??? There probably was a time when I knew of another ship w/ him but now I can't think of not one.

We don't see James a lot but for the little we do see he has so much character development and I just love him so much like he was this shitty little asshole and then he's grown and responsible and there is no grudge or anything with Keith or anybody- I mean, why would there be? Canon doesn't add the details, just the basic outline and it's up to fanon to fill it in :) (says the girl who doesn't even know the Fanon)

BBC Merlin

Arthur Pendragon is, in my head, demiromantic and bisexual... It sort of depends on the circumstances/episode. Arthur needs a very long time to really feel connections with people and only starts to consider love after he really gets to know them, hence his constant search for true love in the show. With Merlin I'm not entirely sure if he was attracted to him instantly, strangely enough feeling a connection from the moment they met, or if it takes him till the end of the series when Merlin confesses his magic and finally shows his true self to realise the depth of his feelings.

Merlin is, well... Bi Bi Bi. A disaster bi in fact. With a preference for sweaty men in metal boxes, he's not very peculiar. However, Merlin is a one person hyperfixation kind of guy. Most people are convinced that Merlin's gay.

Gwen: I feel like most people in BBC Merlin are bi and Gwen is no exception. Like Merlin, she prefers the hero type in metal uniforms. But she also had a thing for Morgana in the beginning.

Morgana: lesbian. I have never seen a woman so disinterested in men, I'm not surprised that they casted Katie McGrath in supergirl as supergirls love interest. I might settle for homoromantic and asexual. But definitly in love with Gwen in the very beginning.

Sir Leon, my beloved, the immortal, the one and only, the eternal suffering aro/ace. I don't have to explain this one. The only counter moment is the Lamia episode where Leon suddenly develops interest in women out of nowhere. My personal take is that anyone could be fallen under a Lamia's spell, this one just had a taste for men (and male presenting).

Sir Elian: once upon a time I clocked them as nonbinary and sadly that's as far as I thought into this character. Pretty sure he's aromantic. He/they pronouns. I dunno, I don't think Elian would conform to anything if given a choice. Aromantic too, I think. Like Leon, there is no interest there, but he does play around with Percival and Gwaine quite often, so I'd take that as allosexual.

I am excluding Gwaine because I think canon Gwaine is written as a straight oblivious fuckboy. Albeit a kind one XD fanon Gwaine is often poly/ pan... Or into apples. Lmao XD and I'm not sure about Percival because the man has a dead wife and kids.

Voltron

Keith: with his lack of interest in women, he can only be gay. That man looks at no one quite the same as he looks at Lance. what the hell was the whole bonding thing if not a hint for post canon klance? Sorry, not sorry XD rivals to best friends to lovers.

Lance: *bi bo bi* bisexual lighting Lance. Doesn't matter if you prefer klance or shallura, this man is a walking bi flag. I don't know what you mean by proof, just look at this wiggly boy with the fingerguns. He can't even sit straight! Can't do math either. He's perfect!

Shiro: probably the only character in my entire history of shipping that I would unqueer without feeling bad about it. I know he's gay, I just don't really see it in the writing. Of course there aren't always clear signs that someone is gay which is why this is good rep actually (+he's married), but you asked me for proof in the show and all I see is that this man is a dad. That's his gender and his orientation and that's all I really need to know.

Pidge: aro/ace because I love my aroaces and this child loves robots and robots only. Also nonbinary/genderqueer. Pronouns: fuck/off XD

I think Lotor should have been bi. Pre-canon Lotor had us Langsters ship Lotor x Lance and it was so much fun :D

I have a lot of things to say so it’s all under the cut

First of all, wow. What a finale. What a fucking finale, man...

I’m warning you now this is not a nice rant so if you really love Voltron and don’t like seeing other people hate on it do not read this lol

Let me be honest, Voltron really isn’t that great of a show. I’ve pretty much stayed here watching the new seasons out of obligation and my love for the characters. Even then the writers still fucked that up so I’m stealing them all and they’re mine now. I’m not even sorry.

Voltron has always been a really tough show to keep track of and follow along with;; I never really know what’s going on and they introduce characters and planets so quickly that I forget about them right away and there’s like maybe 3 that are really memorable. So honestly the whole series has just seemed like an EXCESSIVE amount of filler that nobody needed. Even starting season 8 I had no fucking idea what was going on because the end of season 7 was just THAT unmemorable lmao. And they brought back so many characters I was like “Who the FUCK are you??” And it just made it ten times more confusing.

There was just so much unnecessary content we didn’t need in there. In season 8 they fought Honerva in her giant robot for like three or four episodes straight and that got really tiring really fast. Honestly most of s8 was just robot fights and I’m like “Are they writing a meaningful story or just 7 billion eye candy action sequences” TAKE THE TIME TO DEVELOP YOUR CHARACTERS, UNIVERSE, AND PLOT MORE INSTEAD OF DEDICATING 15 OUT OF 20 MINUTES OF SCREENTIME TO ROBOT FIGHTS THANKS. There are SO many plot holes and questions left unanswered that we’ll never get answered so that’s fantastic. Not to mention all of those fights were so fucking repetitive I got so bored watching the same thing happen over and over again. Voltron always wins, what’s fucking new?

Also man jesus christ they fucked over their characters SO MUCH. I’ll get into Allura last but let’s go down the list, shall we?

Lance was reduced to not only the comic relief but the super boring love interest. His relationship with Allura felt so forced and unnatural and there was no chemistry between them whatsoever. It was almost as if the writers were like “We need something for Lance to do in season 8” and then they decided “Let’s just make him a foil for Allura and make him her boyfriend!!” Like it was SO unnecessary and I’m sorry to any Allu//ance shippers out there but I felt so uncomfortable watching their romantic interactions. And I’m not SUPPOSED to feel that way. I actually did ship them until I watched this season but now I’m just really put off by it because WOW they wrote that romance horribly. I know people hate comparing Voltron to ATLA but take Sokka/Suki for example. Their dynamic is very similar to Lance and Allura’s and it’s a PERFECT example of what a good healthy relationship is like that isn’t forced or super awkward. If the writers had written their relationship like Sokka and Suki’s I’m sure I would like it SO much more! I was so upset to see Lance lose pretty much ALL of his development and be reduced to just a foil or a background character they could beat up on and use for fodder about Allura’s death. So fucking uncool. On top of that Lance became a FARMER?? REALLY?? He had dreams of becoming a famous pilot and yeah a war will do shit to you but I CANNOT imagine him living that sort of boring life it’s just not Lance at all!! So immensely out of character and not what he deserved. Lance deserved a real, true happy ending kicking ass in space and being in love with someone who really loved him back.

And Shiro—god, they fucking abused the shit out of him and treated him like a punching bag. Not to mention the awful queer baiting with Adam and then, to rectify their awful mistake, the writers made it so that he got married at the end of the series. Great. I don’t even know who the other guy is. Congrats Shiro, but it really doesn’t mean fucking shit if it was added on last minute and seems like a way to appease fans rather than to actually give Shiro a good ending. They could have brought Adam back and let Shiro marry him but nope!! They fucked that up too

Also all character development for Hunk went down the drain and he was also reduced to comic relief. He didn’t end up with Shay like I was hoping and just god so much racism I’m too irritated to even get into that

Keith and Pidge were the only ones who really got semi-decent endings and even still they were written badly too. (Doesn’t mean I’m not proud of them tho, good kids.)

And Allura.

FUCK. THE WRITERS.

They absolutely did not need to kill her off like that it was so pointless and utterly stupid that I’m sitting here rolling my eyes into the back of my head. They literally killed her for dramatic effect and that’s it. Yeah whatever she saved the fucking universe but they could’ve done that another way! That’s just lazy ass writing and it really offended a lot of people including myself so yeah! Not happy about that! It’s really racist and also pretty misogynist too?? Also Allura during the last season was not my favorite character at all she was written so terribly and out of character that I just ended up hating her and she deserves so much better than this absolute fucking bullshit

If they wanted to have a good final season, they should have kept Allura alive, given everyone actual GOOD character development, not threw in a super forced and uncomfortable relationship, and gave the characters proper happy endings with the people they SHOULD have ended up with. Not that romance is that big of a deal since Voltron isn’t about that but man they could have satisfied so many fans doing that but they just took the show and spit on it

So yeah I’ve had a really great experience being part of the fandom and creating content, and there’s definitely some good parts to the show. Voltron is a bad show lmao but I still had fun, and I’m still gonna make content that the fans actually deserve and want—and forget canon even exists. I’m salty and disappointed but I’m not surprised. Even so the show did end on as good as a note as it could have considering the circumstances and while I’m not 100% satisfied it was what I was expecting so. I’m like, iffy about how I feel towards the finale.

Anyway Klance is canon king, Adam and Shiro are married, Hunk is a universally famous chef with his gf Shay, Allura and Romelle are the new Altean Queens, Pidge is fucking amazing being herself and everyone’s happy the end

Hey Serra. Have you seen Voltrons new season? There’s a lot of people mad about it. I wanted to know if you enjoyed it or not

I was expecting this and I’m glad it’s been asked after I’ve had some time to process everything.

There are a lot of things I’ve enjoyed this season. I loved Hunk getting his own arc and bonding with Keith. I loved seeing how much Lance had grown both as a person and a paladin. I loved Shiro, a canonically queer, disabled man of color who was an amazing leader and a soldier. I love, love, loved Krolia and Kosmo. This season was action packed, kept me at the edge of my seat and put my emotions through a wringer for real.

However, there’s a but. As a queer fan, I’m sad that I had to see another queer character die. I know that it made sense in the narrative— Adam was one of Garrison’s best soldiers, it was an intergalactic war against a much superior species and Adam died a hero’s death. I know all of those. I’m still upset it happened.

I do think that it would be better to see Shiro mourn for longer or for Adam to have more screentime. I kinda get that it was because there was too much story to tell and too many characters around though.

I don’t think the producers deserve hate over this though. They’ve fought for years to include Shiro’s sexuality in the show, which is the main representation. Adam was a very minor character, his role was to reveal Shiro’s backstory. Shiro is still queer, on the screen and visible. He’s still queer even though his ex-boyfriend from years ago is dead, his sexuality isn’t determined by his relationship status at all.

I don’t think they did this to intentionally hurt or bait their viewers, despite what anybody else claims. I don’t condone calling them homophobes or other awful things when they said themselves how much push they had against Shiro from the upper ranks!

I’m going to choose to trust the EPs and believe that they were sincere when they told us they fought for representation and valued it. We’ll see what the last season will bring us.

major canon divergences 

( i don’t expect anyone to read this because it’s a lot lmao. this is more so for me to have a reference because i forget things about my own muse / canon rip. if we’re rping together we’re probably also talking ooc so anything important from this post will be mentioned to you at some point. )

( please note that by canon, i’m referring to my general main verse which includes no interactions with other muses. each interaction with a muse is put into its own verse. new interactions can come into the main verse at any point of the timeline and then diverge from that point. )

does not marry curtis. they noticed each other because they worked closely as part of the atlas crew and maybe if the time and place were different there might’ve been a chance for them to get to know each other and form something but for shiro, there is a lot weighing on his mind that he needs to wade through

( a ) shiro has been thru Sum shit and he has an endless list of reasons to be sad but i just want to make it known that shiro’s no. 1 source of guilt and just general mind-anguish is the fact that he is living in a borrowed body, that he took from someone who had to die for him to live. 

( b ) at this stage he is also coming in touch with his feeling for keith which have been with him for a while, so even if he was aware of other potential interests . . . he’s not actually interested back.

adam is alive. he was critically injured in the first wave of attack by sendak and recovered enough only to provide ground support for the second wave. he remains an officer of the garrison and heads training and recruitment. he does not fly again. he’s happily married and reaches out to shiro. they’re amicable, but not close friends. maybe eventually they will be. ( this will obviously not be the case if i’m writing with an adam. )

allura is alive – i need to rewatch the end of season 8 to figure out how, but she’s alive.

after a year or so of captaining the atlas, the need for atlas to be an offensive military ship decreases and shiro consults sam and pidge for their thoughts on deweaponising his prosthesis. The new arm is still powered by allura’s crystal but looks more similar to the galra arm ( except it starts at the shoulder since his bicep??? disappeared magically ), but it’s coloured white and light grey, and the lit up areas are aqua ( same as the crystal. )

speaking of the crystal . . .  the original arm was designed to operate via a balmera crystal, because that’s what most of altean designs are based off of. however they didn’t have a crystal to use, and sam says the remaining energy required for the armto work would be drawn from shiro’s own electromagnetic field. he tries it for the first time and . . . his body rejects it, in what looks like an incredibly painful and potentially fatal way, if it hadn’t been for allura stepping in and replacing the original energy source for the arm with the crystal from her tiara. we don’t ever find out why shiro’s body rejected the first energy source but here are 2 theories:

( a ) shiro’s body is actually kuron’s body, a clone, manufactured by haggar, using ~space science~ and likely some form of quintessence. the electro magnetic field coming off of the clone’s body would vary to that of a human’s, which is what sam would’ve based his calculations on. balmera crystals have incredible properties that aren’t really explained in great detail but we know how powerful they can be, regardless of size. 

( b ) because it’s kuron’s body, maybe the connection to haggar didn’t completely shut off when keith cut off the arm. that flash that happens when the arm connects and shiro’s body starts rejecting it is very similar to the flash that happens when haggar starts controlling kuron earlier ( better explained in this headcanon piece. ) my only issue with this headcanon is that it implies haggar may still have some degree of control over shiro, and I just………….it’s been so overused, i just don’t want that for shiro anymore, so i’m most likely sticking to theory a !!!!!

still on the subject of the crystal, let’s talk about what shiro says after allura places the balmera crystal in his arm ; “i feel strange . . . i feel – great !” strange, as in he’s feeling something he’s never quite felt before. this is in contrast to what he feels when the first energy source is used in his arm ; “i feel . . . good,” but he sounds hesitant, like he doesn’t feel good at all, and obviously we see why moments afterwards. the great part is emphasised. he almost seems excited, like he really does feel great, and the scene cuts off with him trialling his arm by making a fist, and smiling. again, the properties of the crystals are pretty much undefined, but they are an immense source of power – what allura’s tiara contains is likely more than enough required to power shiro’s arm, and going back to how allura operated the castleship, and how shiro is able to operate the atlas, i’m loosely headcanoning that the crystal acts as a link between “captain” and “ship”, though obviously, allura herself channels quintessence and has so much more capabilities as a “captain.” 

what does the crystal providing an energy source for not only the new prosthesis, but also shiro’s body mean for shiro? an external boost of energy and human-compatible quintessence is probably the first dose of anything resembling treatment shiro has had since the kerberos mission. i don’t see the balmera crystal nor altean healing pods having the power to edit genes but as far as healing goes, it must have some effect in alleviating pain and / or fatigue for shiro to exclaim, “i feel great !”

( a ) sometimes it’s difficult to write in a universe set in the future because things of our current reality ( social injustices, shit politics, technological limitations etc. ) may not be a reality say 100 years in the future, and add space and alien technology to the mix and you’re sort of left with a lot of potential for creation and imagination and progression but also hindered by the reality of present day and representing present day. i wouldn’t want to “magic” away shiro’s disease or magically come up with a cure, but at the same time i don’t want to take away the possibility for him to be potentially cured ( which is what the “i feel great !” line hints towards ) just because of the limitations of today ???????? i’m just having an inner conflict over this - i will update what i decide when i decide !! 

major fanon divergences

does not qualify as space dad. it simultaneously infantilises the other paladins and takes away from their own journeys of being forced to grow up too quickly and take on the responsibility of fighting in a war, and puts undue stress on shiro who is only ~25 himself responsible for his team only in the role of their commanding officer at best

his prosthetic arm is not a sex toy, it’s a prosthesis ( refer to this post on arm related bed time activities )

shiro did not have a romantic connection with keith pre-kerberos. if anything the earliest signs of anything resembling a romantic connection would be late into season 2, but that is pending heavy plotting

shiro came from a happy family . . . he just lost almost all of it very early on. he grew up loved even though he learnt about loss too quickly ( please refer to this headcanon. )

shiro cannot sing lol . . . i dont know where this headcanon came from, but it’s sticking

i think it’s popular headcanon for shiro to have a little sister, or a big family; i wrote his backstory with his older sister before i came across this, so i’m sticking to my original headcanon because his bond with his sister is so strongly formed in my head  

shiro is not afraid of death . . . but he doesn’t want to die. i feel like his relationship with death needs its own post but the tl;dr version of it is that he had a timer put on his life when he was around 17 years old. life goes from seemingly endless to suddenly very very short ( not just in the sense that his lifespan is predicted to be shorter, but that his body will soon restrict him in movement and opportunity. ) and then kerberos happens, and the arena happens, and voltron and zarkon and he’s reminded that life is short regardless of whether they give you a timer at 17. any moment could be his last and shiro has had a long time to come to terms with this. it makes him incredibly grateful for the present, and of what he’s had in the past. it also is potentially why he prioritises a mission that will take him to see the stars, over a relationship with adam ten years down the track.

Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance Cycle. whoops. unfortunately I can’t nail down any of the fanfic writers who might have been influences, since most of them 1) were on ffnet and 2) are long gone, and I’m set in my ways enough these days that I’m not terribly influenced by fandom trends?

there weren’t many for Voltron, I’m afraid. for Zelda, I’m an absolute sucker for New Cycle fics (i.e. the writer has invented their own incarnations and plotline) and literally anything Ganzelink.

oh god lmao, you know I’m a picky bitch. um. 90% of whatever VLD had going on ship-wise, demonizing Galra characters (especially Sendak), people woobifying Lotor, [gestures vaguely towards the ship discourse at large], a/b/o, etc. for Zelda, it’s modern aus (throwing away the best part of canon!!!), fanon Zelink, whatever the hell is going on with monoshippers who like one leg of the Triforce Trio and bash the third member, [gestures vaguely towards the way the fandom at large treats Ganondorf], etc. also, literally anything for a ship I like that doesn’t match the dynamic I headcanon, which means basically that I’m constantly starved for content lmao

You know a fandom (and more importantly an important shipper part of a fandom)(fandom like Voltron because it’s the one I main for the moment) is getting very, VERY rotten at the core when you get several DOZEN pics and fics of a character (who I won’t name because people will automatically knows, right?) cheating on his partner that they married canonically with someone else, despite knowing deeply that IN CANON said character would never do that, AS WELL as the character he’s cheating with. It’s just disgusting and spreading a very, very harmful and unhealthy mentality to fragile and younger parts of the fandom that might like the ship I’m vageuing about.

Do you think, honestly, that it’s something you want to teach people? That it’s ok to cheat on someone because you realize that that one person is suddenly the best for you and you’re heartless enough to cheat on the person you CONSCIOUSLY DATED AND MARRIED just... because? Do you think it’s cute or fun to make a character that is canonically chivalrious and extremely loyal cheat on someone because you prefer that one specific ship? If it was just “oh yeah, X and Y never dated and married in my fic/art” then it’s good. I don’t care. But if it’s just “oh yeah, he’s cheating because I find X and Z a better couple lmao” then it’s just horrid and disgusting and you should be ashamed of yourself.

I’ve seen recently several very harmful fics like that and a few arts with the same theme and I’m just disgusted at those who wrote and drew that concensciously and posting it on the wild wild web because “lol, it’s my fave ship and it should have been canon, fuck the canon ship lol they fuck in secret”. It’s not cute, it’s not cool. It’s just being a harmful asshole.

Cheating is never cute nor something that should be done, to anyone. You want that stupid ship to be canon? You want it bad? Make the already canon couple fall out of love. Make them realize that, yeah they’re just not compatible anymore and it’s preferable if they split. Make their backstory like that! It’s normal! It’s ok! Couples divorce for lots of reasons. People can stop loving someone and be a responsible adult and talk about it to their spouse. Cheating destroys a person. It destroys the perception they have on themselves, on the people around them, on the people they love. It destroy their trust, destroy their ability to stay with someone without getting anxious about things like “am I too clingy? Am I not present enough? Do I show that I love them enough? Too much? Am I not fun to hang out with anymore? Is sex not satisfying enough? Is something wrong with me or how I am with someone?” It’s okay-ish to roleplay that with your S.O (and ONLY your S.O, unless you are in an open relationship/polyamorous and have talked about it beforehand). It’s one thing to be kinky for the night and set some controversial stuffs. It’s not ok with you’re going behind someone’s back for some reasons. 

I’ve actually seen people argue that “it’s a mistake” and they “won’t do it again.” Both are awful lies. A mistake is something like putting 40 minutes to the timer instead of 30. It’s texting your best friend instead of your mom. It’s taking the wrong bus or butting into someone. A mistake isn’t deliberately seeking someone to have sex with them. It’s not going to a place you know no one will see and have intercourse with someone that isn’t the person you are dating/married to. It’s not doing the horizontal tango while your partner thinks you’re still stuck at work or spending the night with your bestfriend for a girl/boy night out. Those are way, way too much calculated steps into something to simply be a mistake. I’ve seen people believing those lies and being destroyed by them. Destroyed in their selfesteem and being - rightfully - unable to trust the person they should have been able to trust. It’s ugly, it’s hard to bear. It’s harmful. Some might replie to this post by “yeah but what about those red light district back in the days, huh? Or when the guys had several concubines and shit?” I’ll answer back to you “do we know if that was really accepted by the spouse? Do we know if the wife (because it’s majoritairly the men who cheats) were truly alright knowing that? We don’t. We won’t. But it’s not ok and it never had been. 

But the worst part of that whole shipping affair is when shippers rant about said character to justify what they drew/wrote about. It’s when they are pulling things out of fanon and declaring it bible truth to declare that X cheating on Y with Z is ok and tearing down people who disagree with them, who wants them to see the immorality of it. Those people who are not bashing the ship for the sake of the ship but because it is toxic and harmful and young, impressionable persons can fall on it and get the impression it’s perfectly fine to hurt someone like that. That its ok to have people cheat on someone because you don’t like the look of them together, or prefer X and Z as a ship. That it’s ok to harass someone for something as petty as a cartoon.

Fandom mentality is becoming worse and worse and I am ashamed in every person spreading such twisted and ugly behavior. I am repulsed by their behavior and the audacity they have to think they are righteous in doing so. AUs are a thing. Diverging a canon is a thing. Making something on the side of a fandom is a THING. Deliberately drawing/writing cheating propaganda should never had become that “new best thing” that is hip and cool. You want more content with your ship but you are mad at how the canon has dealt with it? BEAR WITH IT, HAVE A TIGHT GRIP ON YOUR BALLS AND IMPULSE AND WRITE SOMETHING THAT DOESN’T INVOLVE TWO PEOPLE CHEATING ON SOMEONE ELSE.

How did you discover the show?

Through tumblr, although special mention goes to this particular ML AU piece because two months before I got into Voltron, ML was my default go-to interest.

Was it love at first sight or did it take you a while to get into the show?

Pretty much. I watched A:TLA and LoK before it, so combined with all the talk about it on here I decided to give it a go.

I think I binged half of it in a day before stopping myself and thinking I had to tell my sister about it so we could watch it together lol. The first few episodes are kind of heavy on the set-up, but “Fall of the Castle of Lions” and “Tears of the Balmera” solidified my love for starting to explore Hunk’s and Pidge’s characters more.

Black because of her history with Zarkon and how it parallels Shiro’s history of trauma. Also, as Abby put it, Black “is the biggest Shiro stan & I respect her for it.”

Do you have a favorite Villain?

Haggar. Even if some things don’t entirely make sense (yet...?), I absolutely love the slow build-up we’ve been getting for her. She’s been in the thick of things since the first episode/10000 years ago, and we’ve slowly seen her piece together her own past (one of the biggest reasons “Blood Duel” is a favorite, her flashback was great) and manipulate things to her own advantage; I’m so happy she’s going to be the final boss of the series (or co-final boss if Zarkon and Lotor are going to come back in some shape or form, though maybe merely as her puppets).

Galra for their species diversity and history (not entirely fair since they’re given a disproportionate amount of focus but still lol.)

How/Why did you join the fandom?

Wanted to chat with other fans of the show because I’d already bored my friends who were either casual about it or indifferent to it to death lmao. I’ve been relatively on the outskirts since I first watched it in July 2016 because I’d rather avoid fandom drama, but I’m a bit more active now and hope to write a bit for it, as rusty as my skills are.

Care to share a favorite headcanon?

Um I like a couple of popular ones like TransGirl!Pidge, past Alforan, and Yorak for Cosmic Wolf’s name. Was really big on Acxa and Keith being siblings too until s6 seemingly disproved it. 💔 Some others: - Kolivan is Krolia’s dad. (thanks @aaawunder now I’m going to be sad if this doesn’t pan out)

- Coran knew Keith was Galra ever since the Castle scanned everyone in the first episode and he had to look at the human medical data when he stuck Lance in a pod in “Tears of the Balmera”. (keeping in line with how he knew Pidge was a girl; guy is up-to-date on everything going on on his grandfather’s Castleship)

- Hunk either got his current headband from a relative who has since passed away or it was a gift from Lance after the original one he got was wrecked somehow, and that’s how they became BFFs. - Keith’s jacket and gloves were gifts from Shiro. - Lance’s jacket was a hand-me-down from one of his older brothers.

- Shiro grew up with either a grandparent to explain his “old soul” tendencies/perspectives or was raised by distant relatives that he didn’t connect with much (basically adopting @bosstoaster‘s backstory from her Spectrum series for him because it’s amazing). It kills me that Josh was able to mention the former at a panel because that means we’re probably not going to get to see much of his backstory in canon, and I’d really like to see from his perspective what his and Keith’s friendship means to him. If he was in a similar situation of isolation growing up, if he saw that in Keith, etc.

- Alteans aren’t really hung up on gender due to their shapeshifiting abilities. Alfor’s referring to Allura as a princess when she was still so young was due to personal preference whereas the majority of Alteans would refer to their kids with gender neutral pronouns until they’re roughly the Earth equivalent of eight.

What do you think is the best part of the show?

The characters and the genre.

For me, characters frequently make shows of this nature.There can be an interesting plot, but if I don’t care about at least some of the characters to some degree, I’m not as inclined to watch. As many complaints as I have about certain aspects of this series, I’ve been endeared to these characters since s1. There could always be more content (what I would give for more filler episodes for the team to just bond and chill), but with what we have been given, there’s enough there for me to find enjoyment in.

The genre acts as a supplement to that. For me, one of the best things about space-faring adventures is seeing these characters placed in (literal) alien settings and watching how they react to all the possible scenarios the incomprehensible infinite of space has to offer. (And I’m a sucker for such things, being simultaneously made to feel so cosmically huge in one’s consciousness and so incredibly small in the vastness of a universe largely unknown to us.) There’s so much you can do with that. Any hopes and wishes for future episodes / seasons?

- Tying into the previous question, one of the things that sort of made me sad about s3-s6/the second production season is how we didn’t get to do a lot of planet exploring. There’s an entire universe to play around with, and I know it’s impossible to show everything, but with s7 effectively being a road trip season, I’m ecstatic, largely because this provides us with the chance to see civilian Galra. I’m super interested in seeing how those dynamics play out between those not involved with the Empire and all the people who suffer under Galra oppression (we see this touched upon in s3e01 with Kolivan and the BoM, and at the time I was disappointed that it wasn’t explored more, but if they’re saving it for this season I can forgive them).

- Going further, how do mixed people fare under these circumstances? I’m really excited about this because I feel like this would be the perfect opportunity not only to expand upon the VLD universe as whole, but specifically dive into the backstories of Sincline. We know at least the upper echelons of the empire wanted nothing to do with them — how many Galra outside of that hierarchy feel the same way? People of their parents’ species?

Likewise, we could see if Keith being part Galra and Krolia being around gets the team into any sort of trouble. Since Keith’s bigger on actions than words, seeing him in a situation he can’t physically fight his way out of and having to rely on his team is a scenario of continued interest to me.

This is already way too long, but I’ll end it by saying I’m so stoked about all the potential road trip shenanigans the team could get into and for them visiting Earth again. I figured we’d be going back there around the end of s4 or s5 back when seasons were still 13-episodes long, and finally getting to see that play out after two years of waiting is again, very exciting for me.

And, uh, ships. I have my preferences. If they play out, I can die happy. If they don’t, I’ll always have the quality fanon content that keeps me involved with the fandom (all you creators are great 💜)

Do you think you’ll stick it out until the end of the show?

Barring unforeseen circumstances, most definitely. Been with it since a month after s1 dropped and it became my default fandom obsession, will be here when s10 drops in the fourth quarter of 2019.

every k*ith stan recently has been getting on my nerves. k*ith gets all the attention in the show so us lance stans want lance to be as talented and as appreciated and they complain and say we put lance on a pedestal and make everything about him and us wanting him to be shown as super smart is bad because "there needs to be an average character". i love k*ith but it's hypocritical that they complain about lance stans putting lance on a pedestal while they do the same with k*ith

Actually, Lance/Allura! Like, I normally hate any kind of “hero gets the girl” ships (which is part of why I don’t personally ship Ka//ura), and I don’t want Allura to end up with anybody in canon. But I did read an explicit fic once that kind of got me on the A//urance train. I can see it start to work when Lance matures out of his stupid flirting, they develop a deep and meaningful friendship (THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT ALWAYS), and then things grow from there. I figure Lance would be incredibly sweet and devoted to Allura (since that’s what he’s really like, under all the silliness), and his support and light-heartedness would mean a lot to her, and it warms my cold little stone heart. ;-;

Although let’s be fuckin honest it doesn’t take much to convince me to ship Lance with anyone lmao

C -- A ship you have never liked and probably never will.

Which brings us to: Ka//ura, lol. I don’t hate this ship, I support its shippers, and I even reblog it sometimes (bc the ka//ura folks make some high quality art!), but at the end of the day I just... really don’t like it. The way the crew pushed Keith to the forefront as ~red ranger hero~ in s2, and simultaneously started dropping hints that he’d get the Princess, really didn’t sit right with me. Plus, it’s canon in the old Voltron, and thus ... predictable. I’m all for developing the relationship between these two in AUs and headcanons, but the thought (and very real chance) of it becoming canon is both boring and disappointing to me. I’d be disappointed if Allura got paired off with anyone, but Keithespecially. Bleh.

And, tbh to be honest? I never really liked Sha//ura either, but because I never saw all this supposed “romantic tension” people were yelling about after the teenager incident, the idea of the ship just... hadn’t occurred to me. (Again, tho, the art and love people put into this pairing is fuckin great!!!)

SH3ITH. In this case, it’s not so much that I don’t like it as that I don’t like it as much as I wish I did. The shippers are lovely, the chemistry is there, and actually one of my most favorite fics of all time is an S/K fic. But it could never be my main pairing. It just never seized me. I think because the relationship between them can get so damn intense? It’s too emotional. I feel like I’ll drown and die. Death by Sheef. That’s not how I wanna go.

And some shit about why I feel like Shiro being 25 is just, BS.

1.How would Keith know Shiro?

Now, many have said that they’re family, which is, you know, not confirmed, just fanon thing, that shouldn’t be used as proof (unless you’re writing a BIG theory that covers a lot of this)

And because I like being a hypocrite, throwing in my on headcanon. Because you know, they went to same school, it’s not impossible to have them overlap some years. Now we don’t know shit about galaxy garrison, but it isn’t hard to say that it would be kinda like college and now you present me Pidge. Yeah, that doesn’t work. But what it it’s high school + college (maybe even younger, not in same building but you know). That would cover ages around 13-19, with people likely joining older and later so it’s safe to say it would cover up to 30 in all damn honesty. Now, you think they would divide them to age groups but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. It’s more likely they would mix older and younger because that’s damn good way to have people working as a team, so having younger Pidge in same group as Lance and Hunk isn’t impossible. (Or maybe Pidge faked their age too ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

Back to the point

All of them are said to be late teens, so there’s that >.> But fandom has taken a liking to 17 and honestly, I can see that. (even tho i have always felt like late teen is 16-20 but apparently is isn't right lol) SO, let’s say that Keith, Lance and Hunk are 17 (for the sake of this thing, HC whatever you want, i really can’t say what you can do and not. also im not giving any shits either). So Keith is 17 when Shiro’s found, making him 16 when Kerberos happened. And Keith being the cactus we love and all want to hug, there’s no way Keith would trust anyone (in normal situation) under a year let’s be honest. So it’s honestly safe to say that Keith would have been 15, maybe even 14 when he met Shiro. I’m being serious. SO let’s say they used to have kinda mixed classes where older students teach younger students, which then helps older students remember shit (thats like, confirmed thing). And tadaa, Shiro was Keiths buddy pal. And if we’re going same route as Pidge and others, it would make Shiro 17. And fast math -> Keith is 17, Shiro is 20. That would be pretty much somewhere ‘’It’s legal but some people aren’t comfortable with it’’

2. In cartoons there are often a lot of age differences in main group, but it’s mostly 1-3 years. Using digimon as base, adventure had most of the children 11, with koshiro and mimi 10 and takeru and hikari 8 and I feel like that’s often same in multiple cartoons. So voltron having gap of 11 is a bit strange. While this can be explained as them wanting to have older people feel as part of series, younger main cast has really never stopped people from feeling as a part. (or thats what i have seen.) With Shiro being 21, or younger the gap would be 7 or lower which while not same as others, would be much smaller.

3. With Matt being HCd as same age as Shiro, I kinda find it hard to believe that there would be 11 years gap between two siblings (i would understand it much better if there would be siblings between that gap tbh), but it isnt really that unnatural and can realistically be some peoples age gap to their next older/younger sibling. Or maybe Matt and Shiro aren’t same age. Or maybe Shiro isn’t father like you all want to think lmao.

4. DO I HAVE TO EVEN START WITH SHIRO BEING WRITTEN AS DAD AND ALLURA WRITTEN AS MOM JUST TO HAVE THEM BE PARENTS AND LOST ALL OF THEIR CHARACTER SERIOUSLY CAN YOU NOT

Is it me assuming too much from a small sample size or does there seem to be a correlation between artists who ship Ign0ct also being fans of She1th, and fans of Pr0mpt1s also being fans of K1ance? There's other similarities but I don't wanna get too deep into it bc most Pr0mpt1s fans are totally lovely people and while there's a few antishippers who take the whole Mama 1gn1s too far like the Spac3 Dad jokes none of them have started drama on a wide a scale like Vo1tron fandom's.

MMMMMMMMMM MAYBE but i find it hard to compare them tbh, like really hard, since despite the lil bits of ship hate and discourse, xv fandom is SO much better and so much more chill compared to vld fandom, oh my goodness. i think it also helps a lot that a lot of folks who ship pairs within the chocobros also ship them as a poly ot4, so there’s not as much ship rivalry going on like kl/ance vs sh/eith -- which imo has been /the/ worst ship war i have ever been involved with. holy moley. i have my gripes at some shippers and fanon tropes within xv fandom too, but they’re really not as much a majority as they are in the vld fandom.

i think it also helps that pr/omptis and ignoct are both very healthy ships that are portrayed in canon as just as healthy. i’m an ignoct person obviously, but i ship polybros and other ships with noct too, and even think pr/omptis is pretty cute! it definitely has a big mutually beneficial dynamic in canon where both prom and noct care for each other greatly, and support each other, and work well together. i’m really struggling to even think about comparing pr/omptis with kl/ance since kl/ance’s dynamic is so different and has a large aspect of conflict and bickering involved in their relationship, as well as fanon’s attempt to either fix or ignore it since canon hasn’t managed to do that itself yet. pr/omptis doesn’t have that issue at all. noct and prom are very sweet to each other and treat each other very well, as they always have done. i’m not super into it as a romantic connection like i am ignoct, but i can absolutely see why folks do. meanwhile comparing sh/eith and ignoct is... easier? mainly because they’re both ships built on mutual care and loyalty. the power hierarchy imbalance with ignoct is just much more prominent, and manages to add a bit of “spice” to the mix (LMAO) of their dynamic rather than souring it.

ofc there’s still antishippers. there always will be. but voltron’s fandom is /huge/ and incredibly toxic in places, whereas xv fandom is much smaller in comparison. the polybro ot4 being a commonly supported thing also helps a lot in watering down ship wars too, i think, but it definitely doesn’t erase them completely.

and of course, having no age discourse involved certainly helps. LOL

Why I like them: Love his sense of adventure. Like, in episode one where he mentioned that to Hunk–in reference to why they’d join a space program–that just made me stupidly happy. Because going up to space does sound super exciting and fun and it’s always been a dream of mine and I think it’s kind of nice that Lance wants to fly and see the stars just for the love of it. Also, I’ve said this before, but despite being described as “lucky,” Lance is a character who makes his own luck–follow Pidge, reach out to Blue, follow the mermaid, take that impossible shot–he sets off some exciting chains of events simply because he’s someone who goes looking for excitement. It’s nice change of pace to have a character without a tragic backstory who genuinely speaking has an optimistic and enthused outlook in regard to the universe. 

I’m also very partial to his growth as a character–for instance, learning that Black wasn’t meat for him, his parallels with Alfor, how his bayard evolves into a sniper to show he’s starting to really step back now and reevaluate a situation before he acts–I just think he’s made lots of strides and I’m proud of him for it. 

Why I don’t: He became so popular–greatly in part do to his role as the everyman character–that so much fandom content surrounds and caters to this notion of fanon Lance that’s been built up. It often feels like Lance’s canon development and core character is lost in interpretation (including but not limited to fans stripping Shiro of qualities to pass on to Lance). Keith and the Black Lion are also often passed off to Lance as prizes that he supposedly “deserves” and destroying their autonomy in the face of having them serve Lance’s character at his behest is both disconcertingly unsettling and widely prevalent within the fandom. Again, it’s Lance’s character that takes precedence in both these situations, with neither Keith nor Black Lion’s wants and needs ever factoring into the equation. Anyway, yeah, I have way more issues with fanon Lance. 

As for more my problems with canon Lance, it’s hard to forgive and forget some of his treatment of Keith. The one sided rivalry was entirely his invention, and even while Keith was deeply grieving Shiro, Lance had the audacity to accuse of him selfishly just using Shiro’s loss to have his shot at being leader–which is, ironically, exactly what Lance tried to do. He also only wanted to be Black Paladin for the sake of his own ego. I’m glad that Lance has both worked towards moving past the hostility he built up towards Keith, as well as matured considerably–he was only able to pilot Red because he realized he had to set aside his own ambitions for the team. It’s nice to see season Lance is in a different place now than he was at the start, and hopefully his development will continue in that direction. 

Favorite episode (scene if movie): Either The Red Paladin or A New Defender. Both show Lance stepping up and really coming into his own within his new role, as well as showcase his unwavering support of Allura. Some really excellent character development in both cases, both of which really sure just how far he’s progressed from day 1. Also. That heavy allurance hinting?? That’s some Good Stuff,, 

Favorite season/movie: Season 3 had some prime Lance content, with him learning to put the team first and try to navigate the Lion switch in a way where he both learned to respect Keith as well as grew very supportive of Allura, immediately welcoming her to the team. He grew a lot then, I think. Those parallels between Lance and Alfor were also super interesting and I’m all here for them. 

Favorite line: I have two now!! “Let’s go down swinging,” which is what he says in the final fight with Zarkon at the end of season 2. I love how he just expected to lose and accepted it, but still wanted to go down fighting and was proud to do so. Also, there’s, “You are the Heart of Voltron,” and more recently, “I could feel you in my heart.” Just…the fact that he cares for Allura so much and believes in her no matter what is really?? So, so sweet?? I love them??

Favorite outfit: I like his Altean pajamas!! :D They just seem to suit him really well. Also, the lion slippers?? They’re so cute!! I’m glad Lance at least wears them a lot. No slippers that cute should go to waste lmao

OTP: ALLURANCE!! I feel like that’s no secret by now lmao. Their development has progressed so far from day one, and now you literally have them being so in sync Allura is able to unlock new powers she’s always had the potential for because Lance was there encouraging her. Just like how Allura was the one who passed on Red and Alfor’s legacy to him. They’ve helped each other navigate the frighteningly unfamiliar territory of their new roles, building one another up. Lance loves Allura so much, he’ll literally go on and on for it (that fucking vlog), and Allura is quieter about it, but you can see she seems to reciprocate. It’s little things like her soft smile when Lance tells her there’s no one else he’d rather leave Blue with, or how sincerely she thanks Lance in A New Defender. They’re both so precious together and they deserve each other.

Brotp: Either Hunk and Lance or Lance and Pidge!! :’DD I love how Hunk and Lance are just best friends that were lucky enough to end up stranded in space together, I love how they’re comfortable teasing each other and poking fun. I love how they were probably roommates at the garrison. I love how Lance knows Hunk’s a total genius and is genuinely supportive of him. I love how Hunk has raced to Lance before when he was scared. I love how they’ve known each other well enough to see how much they’ve each changed from the start. I love how they’ll just hang out together like maybe nothing’s changed at all. 

I’m also so here for Lance and Pidge, for Lance actually trying to reach out and be friends with her on day one–then making it his mission to be more inclusive of her when she pushes everyone away. I love how Lance is super interested in all her science stuff even though he’s not really familiar with any of it. I love how they’ll get into ridiculous antics like stealing money from a fountain to buy video games and also leaving with a cow. I love how snarky they to each other are but will also secretly gossip about everyone else at the table. I love how Lance still tries to be inclusive of Pidge–little things, like showing her pictures of their new allies at the start of season 3.

Head Canon: Lance and Hunk were roommates at the garrison!! You’ll have to pry that one from my cold dead hands lmao I like to think they played video games lots, stayed up late making snacks or running movie marathons, snuck out into town to go on “adventures” at Lance’s insistence, ect.

Unpopular opinion: I’m a bi guy, and I’m like…really turned off by everyone in the fandom acting like bi Lance is canon. In fact, I think Lance would make for bad bi representation that perpetuated harmful stereotypes. I also don’t like k/l or Black Paladin Lance, so uh…I’m not a fun of a lot of fanon Lance I guess I should say, since that pretty much sums up all my (very) unpopular opinions. 

A wish: Lance and Allura end up together, and although Lance frequently visits Earth after the war, he’s very much involved in helping various planets rebuild and gets to continue exploring far off corners of the universe.

Ummmmmm, is there an unpopular character in the fandom lmao? I feel like there’s at least a small group of people who love each character (even the baddies). I guess Lotor since there’s a pretty large amount of people in the fandom that loathe him, or at least are vocal about it. I like fanon Lotor (and his canon character design) since canon Lotor is still a mystery lmao.
