Crozier’s knapsack
I don’t have clear images of this damned bag, despite Crozier wearing it for about half of episode 8. But like his gabardine-esque polar jacket, it seems to be something invented, rather than a specific historic artifact. (Again, please correct me if you find counter-examples.)
Tumblr media
Backpacks have certainly been military gear for some time. Linen knapsacks show up often in the American Revolution on both sides of the war. Here's an American version that's evocative of what Crozier wears:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Knapsack of Captain David Uhl, of the Dutchess County Militia
For the original era, this bag would have chest straps connecting the shoulder straps to help distribute the load (you can see one in the second pic above), and an internal divider so clothing could be separated from other gear. It was popular at the time to make the flap pointed like a saddle bag flap, instead of a flat line across, like in the show.
This type of design persisted through the early 19th century, though you'd more commonly see sailors use the stereotypical ditty/sailor’s bag to store their spare clothes and personals:
Tumblr media
And you do see bags like this several times in the show, in a variety of sizes:
Tumblr media
What's off about Crozier's bag are the damned shoulder straps. Along the shoulders, they are linen or canvas straps, but then convert into... cord/rope? That can't be comfortable. And definitely not durable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It makes me wonder if the costume designers wanted something that had a "Victorian Explorer" feel and felt that era-accurate full fabric shoulder straps with strap adjusters looked too modern.
Or, maybe the bag was meant to have been repaired/converted from a shoulder bag, with the main strap cut and turned into 2 separate straps? Hmmmm.
Haversacks and some "possibles bags" (hunting bags) worn over the shoulder also had a similar rectangular shape and you see them more commonly in this era than backpacks. Here's a Victorian haversack carried over the shoulder with the straight flap closure.
This feels really close to what Crozier is wearing. The straps are even attached to the outer edges of the bag, instead of closer to the center, as you’d expect on a backpack.
Tumblr media
Here’s a good look at the show bag construction - you can see it’s 2 main pieces: back w/flap and then the front. There appears to be no gusset. (Sorry for low-res, still waiting on my blu ray player.) Fairly simple rectangles, no outer pockets.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What's also a bit weird is the flap's strap and buckle closure. You can see Crozier cinch it up in this scene:
Tumblr media
Most bags of this era would simply have button closures for the outer flap. Watch in the show how long it takes him to close his damned bag, lol. The camera cuts away and then back and he’s still not done fussing.
But wait, what about actual polar explorers? What did they use?
Well, if you look at the Ross era of expeditions (which seemed to inspire the show’s polar coats), you'll see the men wearing something with shoulder straps. But, they're not backpacks, they are harnesses for hauling sleds -- their gear was kept on sleds and not their own person.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, my plan?
I’m gonna approach it like a converted shoulder bag. I plan to use linen (I have some natural colored but am now leaning towards bleached), which I may lightly wax. (The "gabardine coat" is going to be waxed canvas, so I don't want to re-use base materials.) I'll match the show's flap closure and add my own interior divider, like the historic backpacks, for convenience.
And then fill it with snacks and juice boxes. XD

The Batman
So yeah, what a movie. You can absolutely see how much the people involved with it love the franchise and know their lore. It borrows elements from some of the most beloved Batman stories of all time, crafting something that manages to be unique with a franchise we’ve seen SO MANY versions of over the decades.
First and foremost, it really does dive deep into the DETECTIVE aspect of Batman. That he is solving mysteries, that his mind is one of his greatest strengths without making it all high-tech gadgets and SUPERHUMAN brilliance. He’s smart and methodical, he’s observant of little details and very good at following threads.
But he’s not all-knowing, and he has some blind-spots in terms of things he simply doesn’t know. It was also a very nice detail showing how important ALFRED was in developing his skill-set, having him sitting down working on the ciphers both independently and with Bruce. Because while they never explicitly discuss Alfred Pennyworth’s past, they tease it with him being the person that taught Bruce the foundations of his superhero skills.
The choice of a Young Bruce, without retreating the Wayne’s murder explicitly. It’s the shadow driving him, but this is a young Bruce at the very start that hasn’t even developed his dual identity and is still very inexperienced and ANGRY. The film is certainly the darkest Bat-film, in terms of tone and subject material, and yet it completely DECONSTRUCTS the whole Vigilante mentality in interesting ways.
Batman punching thugs and scaring people is how things start, and that is ultimately the foundation for everything WRONG. The Riddler being someone that he INSPIRED, someone that believes they are allies and comrades using violence and fear to bring Justice to Gotham is such a gut-punch. That Batman himself is responsible for inspiring not just the Riddler, but a whole group of violent Right-wing nutjobs.
Everyone mocked the Riddler’s look, but it ended up being a brilliant move. Because the entire point was that the Riddler WANTED not just things that were easy to obtain and hard to trace, but also things that were EASILY AVAILABLE to fringe nutjobs. That he’s merely the leader of a group of fringe, Alt-Right nuts planning to use surplus military gear and weapons to massacre people because “they ignored us”.
The Riddler is all the alt-right dudebros that wear the Punisher logo. That think they’re heroes, that the superhero vigilante is ON THEIR SIDE and one of them. That believe because they had a shit life, the world deserves to suffer.
And it’s interesting how the film discusses Privilege, with essentially a trio of Orphans. How the three central characters are all orphans with very different lots in life, and how its shaped them. Selina recognizes that the Batman is someone from a wealthy background, simply because of how clueless he is about the reality of people struggling to survive in a corrupt world. The Riddler rants about how Bruce Wayne is the “Poor Rich Boy” that isn’t really an orphan, because he had material wealth unlike most of the orphans of Gotham. The film challenges both the audience and Bruce himself with this question, whether Bruce was feeling sorry for himself when he had so much more than everyone else.
Of course, the film also presents that “Bruce Wayne” isn’t even a person at this point. That his trauma still rules over him, that he hasn’t even started to DEVELOP the persona of “Bruce Wayne”. He’s barely a person, avoiding social interactions and wanting nothing to do with the Wayne empire.
I remember seeing someone say THIS was a Batman is one they could see sitting down to comfort a dying Ace, instead of treating her like a dangerous weapon or a supervillain. And seeing the film for myself, I absolutely understand what that person meant. One of the important moments of the film is when Batman learns the first victim was found by his young son. Seeing that little boy sitting in shock, with an officer trying to comfort him. That little boy appears throughout the film, and each time Bruce empathizes with him.
The final act sees him confronted with how his violence has created more violence, and realizing how out of control he is. And the very deliberate Death-Rebirth moment of him falling into the flood waters and emerging again. The scene REALLY IS NOT SUBTLE in its imagery -- Batman holding a flare and reaching down into the darkness, to a group of survivors trapped and huddled in fear. They’re afraid of HIM of course, because he’s cultivated that image of a monster. And then the little boy steps forward and takes his hand.
Because the best Batman stories remember that he isn’t just a dark, brooding PUNCHY MAN that punches. The best stories remember that before everything else, Bats was a scared little boy and that he never forgot what it felt like. That he has far more compassion than people realize, and that kids are his biggest soft spot.
That compassion is a big part of what connections him to Selina. They’re both damaged, guarded people that care more than they’d like to admit. She’s far more cynical, but they balance each other out. There’s so much chemistry, but she isn’t simply there to be Sexy Eye Candy as much as HOOOOOOO Shit does she look good and wear some incredibly revealing outfits. Like Bats, Selina is very much in her proto-phase in this film. The foundations of her intellect, street smarts, and playfulness are there. But she’s also angrier and more driven, on a personal level. The story centers a lot on her pursuing her own goals, in trying to save her friend(?) (girlfriend? something? it’s so ambiguous) and later in seeking personal revenge against her father. It borrows from Long Halloween in terms of Selina dealing with Falcone.
And of course, that cameo. The implication that The Joker is someone that Batman ALREADY dealt with, someone already locked up but influencing street gangs.
But ultimately, the film takes its dark and gritty and violent nature to really say something. To present the worst aspects of Batman Franchises as something destructive and toxic, while ending with a Dark Knight that realizes he needs to be an inspiration and a source of hope. That just punching bad guys, growling, and being scary simply creates bigger monsters and inspires the worst copycats.

Bothersome Beams in Sirena’s Sickbay
You know how I’ve drawn a clean layout of the Captain’s Quarters to make it reflect the room as seen on screen by e.g. erasing the false door, adding in furniture and marks for the windows, etc? I've been doing that for a bunch of other places as well (toooootally not because I’m procrastinating the two Deep Dives I should be working on....), and a few days ago I started on sickbay. And now I'm stuck.
I've been staring at this so long my brain is turning to mush, so now you all get to suffer with me!
(Fair warning: there be loads of extremely pedantic observations ahead. I hope you like staring at deck plans :D)
Tumblr media
This is the outline of sickbay on the deck plans from the blu-ray Set Me Up featurette:
Tumblr media
(For orientation and because it will become important later: The front of the ship is on the right-hand side, the back is on the left.)
A quick reminder of the relevant main features: the round part of sickbay has walls that slope outward towards the top, a counter running along the wall around 2/5 of the way up, and three support beams cutting through the wall and the counter.
Tumblr media
(Note that in reality, the beams are all straight across the top; they just appear curved here due to lense distortion.)
Looking at the concentric circles in the outline above, let’s try to figure out what’s what. Easiest: the broken grey lines, i.e. the largest two circles, surely must be where the wall meets the ceiling at its widest extension. (Here marked in blue.)
Tumblr media
Next, when we look at the transition between the rectangular alcove at the back of the room (marked “med bay” in the plan) and the round “lab area”, we see that it’s smooth and there is no step in between.
Tumblr media
(Again: the walls are straight, not curved, it looks that way because of lense effects.)
Given that and the thickness of the line, I think it’s safe to assume this is the outline of the wall, most likely at floor level:
Tumblr media
These, as far as I can tell, are the windows at the front of the room, next to the door.
Tumblr media
As you can see, they extend almost to the top of the wall and stop short of the unidentified outer circle. Looking at a screenshot...
Tumblr media
...the windows sit right above the counter, so it makes sense that the remaining lines would be the outline of said counter (here in green):
Tumblr media
So far so good.
Here’s the rub. I was trying to figure out what the vertical lines dividing the counter next to the support beams might be, when I noticed these four bits:
Tumblr media
Those look like the places where the support beams cut through the counter.
Tumblr media
That makes sense, right?
As you’ve probably noticed before, these beams run throughout the entire ship. We see them everywhere on the upper and lower deck, they are clearly the skeleton that holds Sirena together. You can tell how important they are to the structural integrity because all the deck plans have these vertical, broken grey lines to indicate where the beams are located.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, take another look at the markings where the beam towards the back of the room cuts through the counter (I magnified the one on the bottom left):
Tumblr media
As you can see pretty clearly, the marking in the counter doesn’t line up with the normal position of the beams, indicated by the broken grey lines. It isn’t off by much. My rough estimate so far is that the beams are about a foot wide with seven feet between them, so this is a difference of maybe 15cm (~6″, apparently). But something is clearly strange here.
You can tell there’s something different at the back of the room, because where the beams in the middle and front are marked by long rectangles, the one in the back is only a small square. It looks almost as if there was only a single column on either side. If that was the case, it would probably mean that the beam at the back of the room was a fake, not technically connected to the beams at the rest of the ship like the middle and front ones.
But does that mean it was also moved a few centimetres further to the front? This has been driving me nuts.
There are a few possible explanations for what might be happening here.
1. I am wrong about those being the markers for where the beams cut through the counter. That is entirely possible.
2. Some changes were made to the set that aren’t yet reflected in this version of the layout. As I said elsewhere, these plans aren’t quite accurate to the final set in all details (e.g. the two steps between the mess hall and sickbay aren’t marked), so it’s possible that this is some intermediate version where the counter design varies a little from its final configuration.
3. The support beams at the back of sickbay do not line up with the beams in the rest of the ship. The production designers decided that they wanted sickbay to be the exact size we see in the plans, but for some logistical or aesthetic reason, having the beams at the back of the room in the logical position (i.e. parallel to the ones on the upper deck) didn’t work, so they moved them forward a little bit.
I cannot tell you how long I spent over the weekend trying to make heads or tails of this.
At first I thought: Well, obviously the beams must have been moved to the front. The grey line marking where they should be goes right across the front of the rectangular bit of the room. They’d block the way if they were in the “correct” place, right?
Tumblr media
Except I realized my spatial reasoning is woefully inadequate when trying to visualize a round room with sloped walls, so I did the only reasonable thing: I taught myself how to use SketchUp (again) to make a very, very crude 3D sketch of the relevant sections of this room.
Tumblr media
Turns out: when you put the beam exactly where it’s supposed to go, it does actually work out okay. I know it’s a little too small here compared to what it should be...
Tumblr media
...but that’s probably more due to my estimates for the thickness of the beams and especially the height of the room being off.
I did another version where I moved the beam forward so it sits where the counter is marked on the deck plan, and the difference is pretty negligible:
Tumblr media
It looks a little closer to what we see on screen, but again, that’s probably more a miscalculation issue than an honest-to-god result.
As a last-ditch effort I had another look through my screenshot collection. My thinking was that if the beam was moved forward slightly from where it was “supposed” to be, that would mean we’d see more of it.
Tumblr media
(On the left, the beam lines up with the grey lines. The area where it intersects with the counter (solid red) is smaller than in the right-hand example, where the beam was moved to align with the marking in the counter.)
Likewise, the distance the beams extend under the counter would be different, if not by much.
Tumblr media
(The beam on the right is moved slightly towards the middle of the room. You can see that it dips lower than the beam on the left, which is in the “correct” position.)
If this was the case we should be able to see it in the screenshots, right? Except...
Tumblr media
This is the view towards the front of the room. It’s difficult to tell with the perspective, but I don’t think there is much of a difference in how far the beam towards the front of the room (far right) and the one at the back of the room (far left) extend below the counter?
Tumblr media
Maaayyybe there’s a difference there? But then again, if you compare how far they dip below the tops of the chests of drawers, that seems pretty similar...
And this is the point where I decided this insanity had gone on long enough and I should probably stop before my brain got entirely scrambled (since, sadly, I don’t have an EMH to unscramble it for me).
So, what’s the takeaway here?
1.: Short of somebody from the production team giving confirmation either way, we won’t know what happened here. I might have misread the set plan, the plan might have changed, or the beams might have been moved. It will have to remain a mystery until we get more shots with incontrovertible evidence, or somebody takes a measuring tape to the set and reports back ;9
2.: For the purposes of drawing a layout of sickbay, I’m going to assume the beams are in the correct position, since that makes more sense in-universe. I’ll move the counter markings accordingly. If I have to make a correction to that at some point, at least I have done the legwork and can refer back to this post instead of having to explain the whole issue again.
3.: Yes, I did just spend half the weekend obsessing over 15 centimetres, to the point where I taught myself SketchUp (again) and wrote a way too long blog post (I did warn you ;9 ), only to come to the conclusion that, as we say over here: “Nichts Genaues weiß man nicht.” - I guess we’ll never know. I have absolutely no regrets!
And finally 4.: staring at images of sickbay for hours on end really makes you appreciate just how beautiful that space is. Scroll up again and have a look at the screenshots. The way the circle repeats in the lights and the table and the concentric markings on the floor. The intricate holograms projected by the ceiling lights. The plants and tools all along the counters that give the room so much texture and make it seem like a real, lived-in place. The way the crisp black and white paint on the beams and the gleaming floor contrast with the cared-for but scuffed up plating and worn-off red paint all over the rest of Sirena... I just really love this ship, okay?
Anyway. If you have any thoughts on this, or you’ve noticed something I missed, I’d love to hear about it!
I was about to say “I promise the next post will be shorter”, but who are we kidding? My brain doesn’t do brief. And what is this blog for if not extremely rambly analyses that give us all an excuse to ogle screenshots of La Sirena for a few minutes?

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes...
We've sure had a few changes here at The Ocean Shores Resort. It's been a full on month since I last wrote... Through the good, the bad, and the ugly, we've been keeping positive, enjoying the cooler days. Damn summer is hot and long here!!!
The past few months have all been about learning to deal with life's unexpected roadblocks and detours.
There's a lot to tell, but I think the main thing is, at least for me, that I've been a student for the first time the late 1990's. I've spent the past 4 weeks in class, learning, studying, researching, getting to know my classmates and finding all of it challenging, stimulating and exciting.
Studying counseling has been surprisingly awesome for my mental health too. I mean, I have had some really challenging days, especially when it comes to some of the assessments. The first one, well I just about quit the course over it. I really was at my wit's end. An assessment, I suspect, that was created by some office nut job in a government position, who never taught a day in his life and thinks his open ambiguous questions are making it easier for us to answer. I think the whole class suffered sleepless nights that week!! Terrible, but I chipped away at it, persevered and managed to finish it a few days early. Not only that, I learnt a lot about myself and the situation at hand, as you know I'm all about the process.
I learnt that I have to work slowly and meaningfully at these assessments. I can't expect to finish it in one sitting or even in one weekend. Just starting and having a go, finding the easier parts to get done first, using different resources (I love how I can spend the day watching youtube videos and count that as research) and making sure I take time to focus on me with a little bit of self care.
Alex has been super great too, as I delve into this mysterious world of study and being a student. She listens to me talk about the counseling theory of the day, the one we just did in class and how great it is because I can already apply it to friends, family or, more importantly, myself, only to hear me talk about the next theory the next day, like it's gods gift to therapy. She proof reads all my work, debates theories, offers very good suggestions (not only is she super self aware, but she's studied psychology) and somehow, I don't know how she does it, but she knows when I need a break and encourages me to take it. Otherwise I would be at the books day and night.
I've also learnt a lot in class about myself. Part of that comes from comparing my experiences, beliefs and knowledge with my classmates. They are all really great people from a wide variety of backgrounds. But some, push my buttons ever so gently, and I love it. I love the challenge of figuring out why I react to that person that way. What is it I'm feeling and why?
I am thankful this is not an online course!
I've gotten to know some classmates fairly well, and I am surprised at how they openly offer words of appreciation and support. Like “your voice is really calming” and “your vulnerability and openness is a breath of fresh air”. I always thought my voice sounded pretty crap! (Yes I know I sing, but that still doesn't mean I like the sound of my own voice). Also, I never thought I was actually being vulnerable, I always thought that I was just sharing stuff, my stuff, in the hope we can understand each other better. I may have to stop that now....
Nahhhh, just kidding...
The course is something that is right for me, right now. I don't think my mental state would have been ready 2 to 5 years ago, let alone 10 or even 20 years ago!!
Besides the 2 afternoons being ruined by frustration, anger and hopelessness, due to the above mentioned assessment from hell, it's been a good 4 weeks into the year long course. I look forward to each day in class... I even go to the college on my off days to work in the library instead of working from home. I just get more done, even though Mijo misses my lap!
I don't know where the course will take me, I haven't even thought of what job I want to do once I'm a qualified counselor. I hope that during my time as a student, the course will guide me in the direction best suited for me. Learn my weaknesses, follow my strengths and work with both. It's all too overwhelming to think too far ahead. See, I'm learning...
Right here and now... That's all that matters....
During my first week at college, Alex changed jobs. Arriving in Australia and diving head first into real estate sales 1 hour away from home was a real high jump to begin with! The pressure of the job, not to mention the 2 hours a day traveling time, the weekend work and the small size of the business with undefined job roles made it tough! Real tough!
Alex decided to side step into an admin position in a bigger real estate company closer to home with defined job roles, massive support and a very positive outlook. She basically took up her role she had in New York. She's lovin' it! I am too. She's home each night at the same time, doesn't bring much work home with her, other than stories of her awesome day, which I love to hear. Additionally she now has her weekends free to explore and relax too.
She also found a psychiatrist who confirmed her ADHD diagnosis. Alex was originally diagnosed in her early 20's after her turbulent teenage years. She had therapy and medication back then but after a huge burn out in the US, she came back to Germany and let it all lapse. It has been a real struggle for her to cope, and at times, I'll be honest, it has put strain on our marriage. Well, 1 day after her first doc appointment and her meds had kicked in, she's become a new woman. It's been great to get to know this side of her. While things are not 100% perfect, I now have a wife who looks forward to getting up and attacking the day with gusto.
Mum's had a hard run lately too... We all know that I came back to help support her as her eye sight slowly deteriorates. I've been here to read every label, drive her to every appointment and help her work the wonderful world of her laptop, printer and Windows. Alex has been alongside us for the ride too. There's been a few recent health issues that have cropped up. I can't go into detail, but it's fair to say, I can see it was the right time to come home and be here to support Mum.
Mum is strong willed, strong minded and independent, and little of that will change while she can fight against all the odds throwin' at her. It's been a tough couple of weeks, and mum's kept focused on the bigger picture, her health, it's been inspiring.
Mijo has been through the wars.
The little deaf cat recently celebrated his 6 month birthday, but the poor fella has something seriously going on with his health which means we are delaying any big celebrations until his 1st birthday... Besides ringworm (it's not actually a worm, it's a fungal infection), a tooth that won't grow down (it grows directly forward and needs to be surgically removed), no appetite and losing weight, he's doing fine! The poor lethargic fella sleeps all day, which is kind of normal, except I can't remember the last time he had the energy to chase a toy or even run.
I haven't been taking him out much, he needs rest. We did explore the beaches, rivers and parks nearby together, I hope that in a few months I can pick up where we left off. For now he needs rest, calmness and another trip or two the vet.
Through all these ups and downs, we're all actually quite good.
My deep hole from February/March is just a blimp on the computer screen of my life. Studying has raised a few challenges but I am working my way through them, determined to kick that courses ass and learn, learn, learn... One day I hope I can help others through similar struggles as my own.
Alex's struggles with ADHD are progressing in the right direction now and her new job sure was the right call. Mum is showing the world she can take on whatever is thrown at her, and then some.
Alex and I keep going from strength to strength. I'm blessed with her support, respect and love. One classmates already calls her “the awesome wife”, and they've never met!! I guess when I talk about my wife, I reek of pride and love, as it should be.
Thanks for reading,
The Josh

The Tian Guan Ci Fu (Heaven Official’s Blessing) Review
Okay I’m doing it finally. Sorry if it ended up way too long, but in my defense the novel itself was huge so…
First of all I will not be comparing this novel with any of the other MXTX novels, but I just want to tell you this is definitely my new favorite for several reasons, but mostly its love story. If you want to know more write me I will gladly talk more about this.
I read in many posts everywhere that Hualian invented love. Well you know what, there is really no lie there. Theirs is one of the most beautiful love stories out there.
So, before I go into the details, please just go and read the novel!!! NOW!
The good:
Usually I would like to say a few words about the writing style and quality, but as I’ve only read a translation of the novel I don’t think I can tell you much about it. The translation was very easy to read, so I’m guessing the novel can’t be too extravagant or bad either. BTW thank you everyone who is doing translations for FREE. You all are angels!
The novel was quite long, but the moment you step into the world you would wish it was longer. Every character has their own story and they needs time to evolve, so I really liked its length, but also not so much. Check out the bad for more information.
I liked how the story took place in three realms and different times. I know some get confused by such switches, but I tend to enjoy them very much. I think the heaven and the ghost city were so diverse, that I can’t wait to see them play out in whatever visual adaptation. I feel like this time around MXTX finally explained the actual world with more detail, which made it easier for me to imagine myself strolling through the ghost city market buying sum forbidden rubbish, or watching the moon up close while seated in a garden in heaven. I could see, smell, feel, hear and sometimes unfortunately even taste many things and that is what I think good writing should be about. The things that weren’t described in detail made it even more fun, as one could work with their own imagination (this might be a bad thing for visual adaptations, just saying). And some of you might remember I complained before that if one has no prior knowledge about the whole cultivation, eastern religion and xianxia stuff, then you might have issues reading MXTX books, well this did not change, but I guess I’m starting to appreciate it, as my own imagination created a whole new version of what this whole thing was meant to be. Still, I should have probably listed this in the bad part as well.
The main plot was very interesting and at times even slightly surprising. Mostly it was quite predictable, but I think writing does not have to invent itself every time again, but it has to give some sort of satisfaction at the end. If a story is predictable deep down to every little detail, this is not a huge issues if the story has other strengths. And this one had a nice mix of both.
It did have some parts which appalled me, but you know what, this was actually a good thing. Like I felt a lot of things, even though I really didn’t want to. The things that were disgusting, really actually disgusted me. The things that were supposed to make you angry, made me go nuts. The things that should have made you happy, made my grin like a maniac. But worst of all, were the things that existed to hurt you, they ripped out my heart and shredded it in front of me while I was still conscious. So all in all, yeah even the bad parts about the plot served a purpose. If you are good at keeping track on the main plot while diving into hundreds of subplots, then I would say it was easy to follow. I think this was okay, but the other way around (remembering the subplots) I would argue differently (more in the bad). Nevertheless, some of the subplots were so beautiful that I think they might have deserved their own novel, but isn’t that the case with all good stories?
On a side note, I don’t know if that was intended or if I just saw things that weren’t there, but was the hidden plot actually about how wrong idolizing people is and how it feels to go through post traumatic stress? I might write some more on this in a separate post, I just wanted to get it off my chest here.
Now my favorite part of any MXTX novel: the characters. Honestly, I can’t remember many stories where I loved every character. But MXTX did it again, I loved all of them, even the ones I hated. Once again the way the side characters were introduced, involved in the main story and the main guys, had their own very individual nature and lifes and fought with their own challenges was beautiful. Every character had their own aura (for the lack of a better word). Yeah I like to make fun of this but it’s true nevertheless: most of them had sad histories or were living their nightmares while the plot evolved, however, this was good as it made me appreciate the few sunreys that were able to shine through the clouds even more. As I said, I hated quite a few of them, but either they had their moment one had to love them for or they served another purpose, like propelling other characters to become what they were meant to be or drive the overall plot. And none of this felt forced. So to make it short wow!
And last but no least, the main characters and their love story.
Xie Lian, our protagonist, my angel my only god the life of my love (yeah I used this one already, sue me), is an adorkable martial arts badass/nerd with the worst luck and cooking skills and spiderman reflexes. He is a true neutral, treats everyone with the same respect, just the way a god should be. He is so genuine in every aspect of his being. He is fully aware of all his shortcomings and all the wrongs he has done, but he still hasn’t lost the good in him and the will to act righteously. He is just so so human, that each of us could learn a little from him. I mean he even warns the freaking demon king to not think too highly of him, because he might disappoint him. And what does Hua Cheng do? He calls him his hope! So XL gives the cruelest of all the demons hope. This shows how perfectly imperfect and inspirational XL is. The world does not deserve him, yet still treats him the worst it can. He lost everything, EVERYTHING! Still he somehow came out to be this beautiful being. The only consolation we get is that at least he gets to have Hua Cheng in his life.
And Hua Cheng, he is the only man out there! Towards Xie Lian he is gentle, loving, understanding, supportive, patient, strong, funny and all sorts of beautiful things. With everyone else he is everything you would expect of a demon king to be and none of it a the same time. He is unpredictable in all things that are not Xie Lian. He does so many good deeds that one would forget that he is a demon king, but he hates, is cruel, intimidating, has killed and is mischievous through and through. Even though we don’t get to see everything about him (see the bad), we know him to be the perfect grey character. Also he proves to be the realest of them all, he stands by everything he says and does and I respect that a lot. He shows his anger and love equally and acts upon both equally. And is so freaking intelligent, handsome, sensual, seductive and cute, that I am actually fearing of being in love with a fictional character. The butterflies are a nice touch btw.
Yes, you are right, we all tend to praise almost every main couple, when the love story is good, but please hear me out. Both of them individually are just perfect in their own imperfect way and together they are the definition of true love. Their first encounter was magical to say the least. Without having any prior knowledge about the overall story or how their love would come to be, I was bewitched from the first moment they both shared the “screen”. I could feel the air stilling, just so I could give my full attention to them falling in love (yeah I know one was already head over heels before that meeting, but that is beside the point). And boy, the way they were falling. It was so realistic and yet hopelessly romantic, that I will use them as the perfect example to show people what it feels like to fall and be in love.
The bad:
The length and some subplots… Yes well it was quite strenuous to follow the happenings, as every character had their own huge side story. While I loved to know every single bit of their stories, sometimes it took me a while to get back on track in the main story and many many times I totally forgot about some subplots later in the novel and was like “where is the other character now? why don’t we see them anymore?”. Despite its length, some characters stories were either only told from the view of the protagonist and lost a lot of what was going on deep down, or some characters stories had huge gaps even. Sure, it was not their story and we can be happy we even got something, but at some point I was kinda disappointed to be teased about a character and never get to find out what happened or how they felt. So I would have enjoyed an even longer book even if the one now was too long. Do you get what I mean? At the end of the day I can actually forget and forgive all except the fact that we never got to see some sides of Hua Cheng and had to read between the lines to understand his motives and feelings a little better. I need a whole book about him only to be honest.
So my next bad thing, might actually be inaccurate if I’d knew more about Hua Cheng. This part is probably highly subjective, but I feel like Hua Cheng was not demonic enough. You know, in my head I pictured him to be a real demon, including the looks and what he is doing. How else would he become a demon king? I mean the looks were pretty much on point, I just feel like all the other characters either ignored it or didn’t care and the fandom just makes him look more like a human being. And yes he treats many badly, but in my opinion not bad enough. It feels like all his good deeds got more screen time and his bad deeds were either justified by something good or not really shown.
Not sure if it was only my short attention span or if that was the case, but I felt like the living world was not described as good as the heaven and ghost city.
Conclusion:
I would recommend this novel to everyone who wants to feel love, but is not afraid to hurt a LOT. If you are searching for a story with some human or heavenly goodness, good friendships, good families, just decent people, then this is not a book for you. Xie Lian is the only exception of course and he is worth every tear you are 100% going to shed.
Just go and read the book! Please. And come back to me and talk about it with me :)
