I know thompkean as a ship has very little content so I can’t really get petty about interpretations of it when they barely interact in canon. That being said, I’m kinda sad most discussions of it end up boiling down to they deserve to date someone other than Jim. There’s so much more to their potential dynamic guys come here….

first off, Barbara is a heavily immoral criminal. Extremely so, to a tea. And even though Lee is one too after season three, she still has a ton morals. She still actively tries to help others and to ensure everyone is safe which is heavily shown by her becoming the queen of the narrows! Loving Barbara would be loving someone who actively hurts others and doesn’t really feel that bad for it at all! Someone who actively is providing weapons to penguin which end up hurting HER PEOPLE! Even though Barbara has the potential to change and redeem herself, can Lee make that happen truly? Is she just going to stay stuck loving a woman who she will have to clean up the mess for, again and again???? Like Barbara even escalated the whole downfall of Edward’s and Oswald’s relationship and Lee is impacted by this because Edward is quite literally someone she’s working and is friends with during the narrows arc. The guilt for fucking that evil woman would be insane

secondly, both of these guys would trigger the fuck out of eachother from their similarities to Jim. For Lee, Barbara constantly victimizing herself in order to avoid responsibility AND her constantly having to be the one to comfort and take care of her would be the kick in the balls of Jim haunting. She had to fucking deal with this when she was near him, and now Barbara is doing the same shit to her and expecting her to take it. For Barbara, Lee treating her like she was some innocent sweet pure angel before she became a criminal would be trigger. Even if Lee doesn’t actually treat or view Barbara’s past self like that (which I somewhat doubt since she barely knew Barbara beforehand and would have to heavily rely on Jim’s personal recounts on how Barbara acts to know her) Barbara still is quite mentally ill. She is very likely to get reminded of how Jim acted like she went insane for no reason and treating her like a broken toy from Leslie merely acknowledging the events of what happened with her. also. Something worth mentioning is how much more dependent on men Barbara is throughout the whole show. Both of them are quite related to male characters due to the shows sexism but for Barbara it feels more so since Barbara is trying to be independent and openly powerful CONSTANTLY. we saw her do her whole girl power thing in season four WHEN SHE WAS HEAVILY RELIANT ON RA’S AL GHUL. She was and always has been a pawn in a way, someone who even despite her supposed freedom and success still works under others. The only time she had control was in season three where she became the new head of Gothams underworld, AND IT FELL APART SO QUICKLY DUE TO HER ACTIONS RELATING TO A MAN, BUTCH. SHE HAS A CLUB WHICH KILLS MEN AT MIDNIGHT IN SEASON FIVE AND YET MOST OF HER PLOTLINE IN SEASON FIVE IS REVOLVED AROUND HER HAVING JIM’S CHILD.

When Leslie became a criminal she ended up becoming the fucking queen of the narrows and even though it also had a downfall from a man (that green fuck that I hate ) pretty quickly she was still more stable than it was when Barbara had a position like that. Leslie has been a criminal for way less time, was able to fit sexist gender roles for way more time than Barbara was able to, and yet was able to get closer to having control over her life without men fucking it up than Barbara ever was. Even if Leslie is in a somewhat similar situation to her in season five when it comes to men she got closer. She got closer to fucking freedom. This would be awful to experience it’s just envy and envy and envy with their dynamic on Barbara’s side I love it

lastly. I just think it’s interesting Barbara has more experience with homosexual relationships than Leslie has even with what I said earlier. It’s cute. You wouldn’t expect it concept wise a bit.

Violence was inevitable,  she had known that long before settling in the Narrows,  the whole city was built on that very principle,  and while she may despite the bitter reality of it all,  she could only accept it,  there was no changing Gotham.  The only thing she could actually do was exploit such thing in favor to help the people that needed it,  except it didn't always go the way she wanted,  the current predicament they both were in,  was the obvious telltale of such thing.  The ever so subtle raise of a brow at Ed's dramatic antics and she found herself clicking his tongue,  an attempt to hold back the chuckle threatening to spill from dark painted lips.  ❝ Keep still.  I'm almost done. ❞  She warned while she mulled over his words. ❝ We both know it's because if everyone was to use logic to solve the problems around here then they wouldn't be able to justify their actions.  And what a tragedy that would be. ❞  Despite the sarcastic nature of her words,  there was something else laced within her tone,  resentment.

 A hum left Lee's lips when she finished cleaning the last of his wound,  Hand reaching up to pat his cheek once,  much like she was used to do with the kids that kept showing up at the clinic.  ❝ All done. ❞  An almost playful jab in a otherwise grim situation.  Chocolate hues flickered to him,  resignation clear upon her features.  ❝ I know.  However I can't— won't let them scare me away.  I'm not abandoning the clinic or the people here. ❞  Or my place here. While she genuinely wanted to make the Narrows a better place,  her reason to stay was far more selfish,  that much she could admit to herself,  after all she wasn't a saint,  hadn't been one for a long time.  A shake of her head,  and Lee allowed herself a chuckle as she moved to her desk,  retrieving the bottle of liquor she hid there to pour herself a glass,  it was well deserved after the evening she had.  ❝ I'm going to say this once,  but I appreciate your help more than what I'd like to admit. ❞  And she meant it,  despite everything,  she came to care about him like a friend,  or at least as far as the meaning of friend goes in a place where you couldn't even trust your own shadow.  ❝ But perhaps it's time for you to stop then, ❞

I once saw someone call Lee a hypocrite but didn’t elaborate, and for about 2 years I wondered what they meant by this. But then I remembered she spent the majority of Season 2 worrying that Jim was feeding into his own darkness, and then in Season 3 she took the “bring out your inner darkness” virus completely willingly. And then, y’know, her in Season 4.

I did mention in this that I'm not a massive fan of continuing to tie Kirsten's story to Ed and sort if taking away her agency by making her a henchmen for the riddler, however, historically Echo and Query are probably the most well treated sidekicks of all the rouges, (granted that's because Ed knows not to mess them around, but still a win in my books). They also have lives and careers outside of Ed, their stories, also, have always had themes of dealing with mistreatment, particularly as women, and finding a life for themselves, on their own terms. So at the end of the day, I still think this would have been a perfect ending for Kirsten.

I'm rewatching Gotham and thinking about this again so

Justice for Kirsten Kringle 2024

Ok so this is going to be a loooonnnnggggg post because I have a lot of feeling and opinions so buckle in

Basically, I've been thinking about/plotting out how Gotham would go if Kristen hadn't have died (they'll also be a bit of Kristen/Lee-MedicineCabinet because I dig those two so much). I'm going to go season by season to make it easier : )

Season 1/Season 2

Season 1/2 would basically follow the same plotline with Ed still murdering Kristen in ep 6 of season 2, however she'd be taken by the Court of Owls and like 'kept' for future uses.

Season 3

So, season three would follow the same plotline initially with Isabella showing up and eventually being murdered by Oswald. However, in this version Isabella would be Kristen, brought back by the Court of Owls and stiched back up/brought back to life by Hugo Strange. The idea behind this is that the Court of Owls didn't like what Oswald was doing to Gotham, and Ed was far too much of a help in his rise to power, and they knew that if Ed fell for someone else Oswald would lose it and ruin their partnership, ergo, Isabella. Kristen's memory would have been wiped, so she'd basically be a blank slate to become Ed's perfect partner.

She'd still die as normal, but I feel like in true Gotham fashion we'd get a little teaser implying that she might not actually be dead.

Season 4

In season 4 we would have found out that Kristen/Isabella didn't actually die (obviously lol) and we follow her as she wakes up and struggles with the fact that she seems to have missing memories/someone else's memories and some very severe injuries, (I honestly don't have an explanation for how she's not dead anymore probably Gotham logic and some like left over alive science from Hugo Strange). She tries to go to the GCPD for help but since she doesn't know who she is/is technically dead they just turn her away. Kristen ends up in the narrows not knowing where else to go and then runs into... Lee!!!!! This would be a little before Ed finds Lee, she obviously recognises Kristen and sets about to help her recover her memories/heal her injuries, cue lots of cute MedicineCabinet moments. However, as Kristen gains memories back she also has to come to terms with just how traumatising her experiences have been.

(Tw for brief mention of domestic abuse in the next paragraph)

Bit of a tangent but it is related, I know the Gotham fandom tends to defend Ed quite a lot (which I get, he was treated horrifically and not all of this is entirely his fault). However, from Kristen's perspective She was in an abusive relationship while dealing with repeated unwanted advances from a coworker. Her boyfriend mysteriously disappears with the only possible explanation given to her is that he has left her, she finally decides to give the guy from her work a chance... And he turns out to be wonderful; he's considerate, calm, nice to her and she finally seems happy and settled... Until she reveals to him that she's still worried about her abusive ex returning, to which her loving boyfriend gleefully reveals to her that he murdered her ex. The man she thought she knew and felt safe with has suddenly become a violent stranger to her. Obviously Ed then strangles her and spends the rest of his time pretending to be distraught over her and telling people that she left him for Dougherty. This is all bad enough but then (in this version at least) Kristen is unwittingly brought back to life only to be used as puppet to control her murderers' feelings and actions, giving him, (from Ed's perspective at least) another chance at the relationship whereas Kristen is forced to play along in a scheme that will always end in her dying.

I genuinely believe that Kristen would have a lot of trauma and anger over her whole situation that she would have to work through with Lee. I think she would have a complicated feelings over 'Isabella' because on one hand it wasn't her and simply someone invented to cause changes in Ed's life at her expense. But on the other hand, Isabella was a woman who was allowed no agency over her own life and forced to be a chess piece in a game of manipulation, Kristen obviously feeling a kind of kinship with the feeling of being used dyes her hair a more strawberry blonde to make sure that she can keep a small piece of Isabella with her and to remember a woman who was created to die.

I think once Ed finds Lee there would be an incredible amount of tension between Kristen and Ed (obviously), I also think that Kristen would be pretty angry at Ed's new 'Riddler' persona and how he gets to move on and reinvent himself and she never did, also there would be the fact that they both are struggling with identity issues and knowing who they are. In the same fashion as Ed's Penguin impression, I think Kristen would start committing crimes with a Riddler like aesthetic to sort of take some of his spotlight away, and she would call herself, (if you haven't guessed it already...) Query.

I think even though in real life I don't think Kristen and Ed could reconcile nor do I think that Kristen should, I'm trying to stay as close to cannon as possible and so I think by the end of season 4 Kristen and Ed would at the very least be be to be in the same room without Lee having to interfere.

Season 5

I don't really have a coherent plan for season 5 considering it's a little odd, but I have to assume that Kristen continues on her journey of becoming Query and getting over her trauma. I'd love Lee and Kristen to get together, but I also love Lee and Jim, so I don't know how I'd resolve that. I'm not sure who would become Echo, I'd love for it to be Lee but again I don't know how that would work in terms of Lee/Jim.

Ending thoughts

As a standalone story I don't love Kristen's arc in this in terms of her still being tied to Ed and her future kind of depending on him, but I was trying to stay as close to cannon as possible, which is unfortunately a cannon that does not treat it's female characters great...

❥When you were first hired as an assistant M.E., you hadn’t expected to stumble upon the forensic scientist examining the body you were supposed to. It was your first assignment on your own, given to you by Dr. Leslie Thompkins. He stood there, hands inside the body, his hair slightly falling into his face. You weren’t sure how to proceed as you both just stared at each other awkwardly. 

❥That’s how you met Edward Nygma. The lovely dork of the precinct. He was surprised when you didn’t raise your voice. You didn’t give him a dirty look and you didn’t ask him to leave. No, in fact, he couldn’t believe his ears when you asked him to help. It was your first time being unsupervised after all, so it was comforting that someone who also seemed knowledgeable in your field was there. 

❥What you thought was a one time thing ended up happening more often than you thought. Ed would join you, help you inspect the body, then take anything he needed to analyze as the forensic scientist. It became routine. The times he wasn’t there felt off, though he did have his own job to do. You enjoyed his presence. Being surrounded by death on the daily, his odd mannerisms and riddles brought some life into the environment. 

❥The first time Dr. Thompkins, or Lee as she insisted, walked in on you two hovering over a body, she wasn’t surprised in the slightest. She didn’t even pause to process. Why would she? She had put two and two together forever ago. At first you were mortified. It was your duty to make sure policies and protocols were being followed so that any evidence found couldn’t be thrown out. You and Ed were definitely breaking protocol. He wasn’t trained after all.

❥She just continued on like it was the norm. In fact, it was the norm. Ed had been doing this since before she was hired after all. Best to just let him. He knew what he was doing after all. It got to the point that if anyone needed Ed, they’d just go to the M.E. lab. He was there 9/10 times after all.

❥It didn’t help that Ed found himself liking your presence. You never judged him, you weren’t afraid to ask him for help, and most of all, you didn’t push him away for his ‘unusual’ mannerisms. You genuinely tried to answer his riddles. You never got short with him, and if you couldn’t handle them you would tell him upfront. He thought of you as his safe space. Before, the M.E. lab was a safe space solely due to the bodies being like riddles. He found solace in trying to piece together the puzzle of how and why someone was killed. Now, you were a part of that.

Why Some People Dislike Gordkins (Jim Gordon x Lee Thompkins)

I don't hate their ship but I can see why people would: Lee's way too attracted to Jim's "darkness", which he understandably doesn't want to show, and in return he thinks she's innocent in nature when really she's been fascinated by villains and crime from her first meeting with him (she slapped a patient of hers). 🤔🖤

So not only does he see her as less dimensional than she is but he blatantly ignores what she's like from the beginning on (they kiss in that first meeting episode).

Then of course, there's the events of season 3, which I won't get into because of spoilers.

To sum it up: in their best moments they still don't see each other as they really are, which makes me personally be more happy about them splitting whereas with other ships I might want them to get (back) together even if they become enemies. 🥲

They can still be pretty entertaining, though :)

absolutely just devastatingly ticklish everywhere, but i also think he is weirdly good at hiding it for a little bit, and sometimes the ler trying to tickle him will just eventually give up (big brother powers? zatanna magic?)

his thighs and tummy are his worst spots, and both just absolutely destroy him

he can and will attempt to acrobat his way out of tickling

he 100% once tried to front flip away from Tim when he was trying to tickle dick and jason ended up catching him upside down in the air (and tim totally took advantage)

absolutely the family tickle monster because it is his oldest brother duty

the only sibling that damian actually lets tickle him (because he kind of loves tolerates dick)

Duke

Absolutely the type to accidentally hurt you when you tickle him

If you get his neck? he's karate chopping you. his ribs? he'll elbow you

i hc that jason and duke are close because i think duke would be really into literature too (i think he'd be a big poe fan!!) and they would bond over spending hours in the Wayne manor library

as a result, i think jason tickles duke the most, but i think damian has been indexing moments that he witnesses so he can "accidentally" tickle duke later (bc, despite what he would say, he is a softie and wants to make sure that duke feels like he's a part of the family as much as everyone else is)

i think his worst spots are his ribs and his thighs, but he gets really panicked and giggly when someone tries to go for his neck

i think he's a really timid and considerate ler, and that he's probably stopping every minute or so to make sure the lee is alright (which his siblings find INCREDIBLY flustering)

Damian

he is just a tiny little dude, just an angry tiny guy

he is, like most twelve year olds, ticklish everywhere, but he only ever lets dick or bruce tickle him, and SOMETIMES, jason

his laugh is so cute, and he snorts pretty much the entire time

it embarrasses him incredibly, but he physically cannot fight back when he's tickled, he just kind of lays there and giggles

he does in fact use tickling to his advantage in the manor, and has been known to tickle tim to tears

like steph, i think he secretly knows exactly where everyone is ticklish (except for jason, who, as usualy, remains elusive)

99% of the time that he's tickled it's because he is refusing to sleep after 24+ hours working

he's horrendously ticklish pretty much everywhere but his ribs are the absolute worst

he tries really hard to fight back, and he's definitely a flailer, but ultimately he never gets very far and eventually just slumps and tries to curl up

dick, steph, and jason tickle him the most, but bruce puts in his fair share too

when someone tries to tease him he tries to scream through his laughter so he doesn't have to hear it, but ultimately, he is forced to listen

he's not much of a ler, but he will strike every once in a while

Jason

i hc that the lazarus pit made him more sensitive, but only bruce, dick, kori, roy, and leslie thompkins know about it, and he has sworn them all to secrecy

the same group are pretty much the only people who know where he's ticklish

actually really ticklish if you can get him pinned, but otherwise he is definitely successfully fighting off any tickle attacks

dick has one method from when they were kids where he'll get jason up against a wall, whether he be on a bed or trapped in on the couch, because the tickling will make jason too weak to try to vault over him (and it's MUCH easier than trying to pin his ass down)

he is definitely the most vicious ler of the house, and his teases absolutely mortify his siblings

his signature move is grabbing both wrists of an unsuspecting family member, hauling them over their head, and tickling them to tears with his free hand
