i just got my library card renewed after a very long time - do you know what all i can do with it other than taking out books? because i know there's more things but i feel like it's a silly question to ask
Not at all, and welcome back to the library life! Your millage may vary based on which of these services your library has available, but here's a few things I know of off the top of my head that are pretty common:
The library might have CDs, movies, and even newspapers you can borrow as well
Libby, an app that uses your library card to borrow and download ebooks and audiobooks to enjoy on your mobile device or e-reader
Kanopy, a streaming service for TV shows and movies
Hoopla, which has a whole bunch of stuff like shows & movies, comics, and magazines
Your library might have a makerspace that gives you access to things like 3D printers, button makers, computers with a bunch of Adobe software, ect
Sometimes they host book clubs or other fun community events!
my "#library guides" tag also has a number of posts about services like these if you'd like some more info. Your library's website should also list what services they offer, and/or you could ask a librarian there. Have fun!

#thinking of dinosaurs and troodontids were my favorite dinosaurs as a child#when younger i had a real full troodontid tooth fossil that meant a lot to me#for a time we lived within a few kilometers of hadrosaur sites and troodontid sites#while wider general area had many sites of recovery for the big celebrities like tyrannosaur and multiple dromaeosaurs#at that time troodontids were kinda infamous for i think the depiction in some childrens field guides and dino books#which depicted like a fantasy speculative humanoid troodontid based on 1980s model at Canadian Museum of Nature in ottawa#anyway would visit a small local paleo center a lot and woman in her 70s or 80s ran the counter of their center and rock shop#one day she asked me what my fave dino was and i said troodon so she pulled out the tooth and just gifted it to me#in little black case size of ring box with padding and transparent plastic viewing cover kinda like laminate for displaying a trading card#tooth got stolen from out my vehicle while giving some people a ride while at university before i got too poor for tuition#later during first year of pandemic owner of my storage unit died and new property owners threw away everything i ever owned#i was homeless anyway lost job due to early pandemic closures and had to allocate any money to insulin and other prescrip meds#but wouldve found a way to save my things if the new owners had contacted me#they threw out photoalbums y backpacking gear y books y musical instruments y clothes y artwork y camera y all family keepsakes#and all childhood treasures like souvenirs and gifts and school awards and writing portfolios and all the little memories#which i was always sentimental about as child#from earliest age my room looked like a natural history museum with plants and maps and library of field guides#and rocks and field trip keepsakes and all kinds of little animal figurines and mother had painted room in forest greens and browns#to feel like a forest and among the succulent plants and a globe sat the troodon tooth#parents passed when i was a child#never near any family and were always moving never got to settle into proper stable place then father passed after long sad illness#and mother put in so much effort but she passed few years later and i could not take care of myself or my remaining material possessions#and so im still quite hurt having nothing whatsoever remaining of my childhood or school friends or mother or life generally#and when trying to process grief my thoughts often come back to the troodontid tooth as a focal point a distillation of what was lost#even when young i knew it was advised not to become too connected to material physical possessions#but still there are some small little trinkets in our lives that seem to hold so much meaning and i tortured myself for losing that tooth#thinking about troodon reminds me of childhood

"yeah your book has queer characters in it but is it interesting?"
i agree with the sentiment but these kinds of takes always make me think abt myself at age 14, desperately trawling the local small town library for any books with any mention of gay people (there werent many, at least that i could find at the time). i scoured internet forums for lists of queer books, but i didnt know the right key words and what i did find our library or local book stores usually didnt have and wouldve been really expensive to ship to finland. back then i wouldve read the phone book if youd told me there was a queer character in it.
i guess its just hard to get my head around how much more access there is nowadays. just looking for gay books is infinitely easier, theres a million lists online. if i walk into my local bookshop there will always be a gay romance book on the "trending on tiktok" shelf.
ofc these days the popular sentiment is "who cares if theres queer characters in a book, what matters is that its good". and thats a good thing!! its what we deserve!! but damn it sends my head spinning how much things have changed in just a decade

Just found out that my library app shows the date your account was registered. Now, I have lived in the same county my whole life, and I know I have been going to these libraries since I was a small child.
But even I didn't expect to find out that I have officially had a library card since I was THREE.

ever since i got access to american library cards thanks to tumblr user anneemay (pbuh) 2 weeks ago ive lost even the 3% sympathy i had for americans crying ofc we’re stupid and illiterate our schools suck!!! because you assholes have had FREE ACCESS to THOUSANDS of books and audiobooks and classic films this ENTIRE TIME you’ve been blaming your schools for your elected ignorance!!! from my home in India I’ve listened to eight audiobooks and watched half of cronenberg’s oevre and I’m watching nosferatu (1922) today and I can’t even go to a library in person and you people have had these things your entire life yet you come on tumblr at 18 19 20 and say you don’t know who james baldwin is and if you expect me to you’re classist and 18 year old Americans are too stupid to know bombing foreign countries kills people so it’s okay if they choose to do that rather than work at McDonald’s and of course I have no idea what stocks are or what colonialism is and MCU is the height of cinema and it’s feminist to wear makeup like. my god. you people are going to go through the rest of your life being incoherently stupid and it’s not because you’re poor and it’s not because your schools suck but its because you’re so ensconced in your American privilege that you will never be forced to confront the realities of life and you can go on living your Disney adult fantasies because you’ve destroyed your innate human curiosity and potential at the altar of hyper consumption.

Listen to your elders
So last week I posted abut the importance of downloading your fic. And then three days later AO3 went down for 24 hours. No one was more weirded out by this than I was. But while y’all were acting like the library at Alexandria was on fire I was reading my download fic and editing chapter eight of Buck, Rogers, and the 21st Century. And also thinking about what I could do to be helpful when the crisis was actually over.
So first off, I’m going to repeat that if you’re going to bookmark a fic, you really need to also download the fic and back it up in a safe place. I just do it automatically now and it’s a good habit to get into.
But let’s talk about some other scenarios. Last October I lost power for over a week after hurricane Ian. Apart from not having internet or A/C I did find plenty to do, I collect books so I had plenty to read, but maybe, unlike me, your favorite comfort reads aren’t sitting on a bookshelf. So let’s do something about that, shall we?
In olden times many long years ago around 1995 we printed off a lot of fic. It was mostly SOP to print a fic you planned to reread and stick it in a three ring binder. And that’s totally valid today too, but you can also make a very nice paperback with a minimum amount of skill and materials.
Let’s start with the download; Go to Ao3 and select your fic, we’ll be working with one of mine. This method works best with one shots, long fic tends to need a more complicated approach. Get yourself an HTML download
Tumblr media
Open up the HTML download and select all then copy paste into any word processor. Set the page to landscape and two columns, then change the font to something you find easy to read, this is your book, no judgement. This is all you have to do for layout but I like to play a little bit. I move all the meta, summary, notes to the end and pick out a fun font for the title:
Tumblr media
No time like the present to do a quick proofread. Congratulations, you’ve just created your first typeset. On to the fun part.
Now you’re going to need some materials:  8.5x11in paper ruler one sheet of 12x12 medium card stock (60-80lb) scissors pencil pen or fine tip marker sheet of wax paper white glue two binder clips 2 heavy books or 1 brick butter knife
You’ll also need a printer, if you’re in the US there is almost a 100% chance your local library has a printer you can use if you don’t have your own. None of these materials are expensive and you can literally use cheap copy paper and Elmers glue.
Print your text block, one page per side. Fold the first page in half so that the blank side is inside and the printed side out:
Tumblr media
use the butter knife to crease the edge. Repeat on all the sheets. When you’ve finished, stack them up with the raw edge on the left and the folded edge on the right. I used standard copy paper, because you’re only printing on one side there’s no bleed to worry about. Take the text block and line everything up. Use the binder clips to hold the raw edge in place.
Wrap the text block in the wax paper so that the raw edge and binder clips are facing out. I’m going to use my home built book press but you don’t need one, a brick or a couple of books or anything else heavy will work fine.
Tumblr media
Once the text block is anchored down, take off he binder clips and get out the glue.
Tumblr media
You can use a brush but you don’t need one, smear some glue on that raw edge.
Go make a margarita, watch The Mandalorian, call your mother. Don’t come back for at least an hour
In an hour smear some more glue on there and shift your brick forward so that the whole book is covered. This keeps the paper from warping. While glue part 2 is drying we’ll do the cover. Get out your 12x12 cardstock
Tumblr media
Mark the cardstock off at 8.5 inches and cut it. Measure in 5.5 inches from the left and put in a score line with the butter knife (the back edge not the sharp edge)
Carefully fold the score line, this is your front cover. You have some options for the cover title, you can use a cutting machine like a cricut if you have one, you can print out a title on the computer and use carbon paper to transfer the text to the cardstock. I was in a mood so I just freehanded that beoch. Pencil first then in pen.
Take your text block out from under your brick. Line it up against the score mark and mark the second score on the other side of the spine
Tumblr media
Fold the score and glue the textblock into the cover at the spine. Once the glue dries up mark the back cover with the pencil and then trim the back cover to fit with your scissors.
Voila:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m going to put this baby on the shelf next to the Silmarillion.
The whole process, not counting drying time, took less than an hour.
If you want to make a book of a longer fic, I recommend Renegade Publishing, they have a ton of resources for fan-binders.

Can you do Aventurine, Sampo, Ratio and Jing Yuan react that reader has turned into a kitten?
At first, they didn't know that reader has turned into a kitten until reader tried to show the evidence

A/N: KITTYYYUHHHHH!!!

The warm light of the floor glimmered off Aventurine’s rose-tinted glasses as he sat in his office, shuffling a deck of cards with practiced ease. The quiet knock at the door didn’t faze him; he expected one of his assistants.
“Come in,” he called, but the door remained shut. His brows furrowed. “Hello?”
A muffled meow answered, faint and uncertain. He rose, smoothing the fur trim of his coat before opening the door, only to find nothing. Another meow had him glance down, where a kitten with fur as soft as his fur trim stared up at him, eyes wide with urgency.
Aventurine crouched, an intrigued smile curling his lips. “Well, aren’t you a peculiar little gambler?” he mused, reaching out to pick up the kitten. It immediately pawed at the rims of his glasses, tugging them slightly askew.
“Hey now,” he chuckled, “those aren’t a toy.” But as the kitten batted at his bracelet with a strangely familiar persistence, realization struck. His smile faltered, replaced by genuine shock.
“...Wait. Is that you?” he whispered, his fingers brushing over your tiny head. The kitten’s insistent nod and another urgent meow confirmed it. Aventurine’s laughter broke the tension, a mix of amusement and disbelief.
“Well, love, you’ve really raised the stakes this time. Don’t worry,” he said, cradling you against his chest, “we’ll figure this out. But first—how do you feel about poker?”
Tumblr media
The merchant whistled a jaunty tune, inspecting his latest haul in a dimly lit backroom. A soft thud made him pause, his eyes darting to the source. There, amidst the scattered goods, a small kitten struggled to climb out of a wooden crate.
Sampo knelt, laughing under his breath. “Aw, did I accidentally ship you in a box? Poor little one.” He scooped you up, but froze as the kitten squirmed, reaching for his face with a familiar urgency.
“...Hey, wait a second,” he muttered, narrowing his eyes. The realization hit when you swatted his nose with deliberate intent. “No way. Is this some kinda joke?”
You yowled, smacking at the silver cuff on his ear. Recognition dawned, and Sampo barked out a laugh so loud it startled you.
“Well, well, this is a twist! You’re cuter than I expected,” he teased, holding you up to eye level. “Don’t worry, I’ll fix this. For a small fee, of course. But hey, this could be great for business! Ever heard of the world’s only scammer cat?”
Tumblr media
The library was quiet, save for the soft rustle of papers and the occasional sigh from Ratio as he poured over ancient texts. He was lost in thought when a soft thump on the table pulled his focus.
There, atop his meticulous notes, sat a small kitten, staring at him with an intensity that rivaled his own. Ratio’s eyes narrowed. “What is this nonsense?”
The kitten didn’t back down. Instead, it batted at the straps of his arm braces, its persistence strikingly familiar. Ratio tilted his head, studying you with growing suspicion.
“You’re far too bold for a common feline,” he remarked, leaning closer. “Those eyes… Wait.” His tone sharpened. “Is that you?”
You responded with an annoyed meow, pawing at the jewel on his vest. Ratio’s brows furrowed, a rare flush of embarrassment coloring his cheeks.
“Unbelievable,” he muttered, pinching the bridge of his nose. “First, ignorance plagues the universe. Now, this. Fine. Stay still while I calculate a solution—and stay off my notes.”
Tumblr media
Jing Yuan was enjoying a rare moment of leisure, sipping tea. A soft meow interrupted the peace, and Jing Yuan turned to find a small kitten attempting to climb him.
“Well, what do we have here?” he said, his eyes warm with amusement. He gently picked you up, cradling you in his hands. “A brave little one, aren’t you?”
As you squirmed, pawing at on his hip, Jing Yuan chuckled. But then he noticed something—your eyes.
“...No,” he murmured, his smile fading. “Can it be?” When you gave a frustrated meow and nuzzled his palm, recognition bloomed.
Jing Yuan sighed, stroking your tiny head. “Ah, so this is what has become of you. How unfortunate.” He set you down gently, his calm demeanor masking his concern. “Worry not—I’ll ensure you’re returned to your proper form. But for now, consider this a lesson in humility, my small friend.”
He leaned back, a soft smile returning to his lips. “Though I must admit, you make a rather adorable kitten.”
