The Crusades: A Fandom Primer

Like many of you, I am very excited to see a whole lot of fic about everybody’s favourite new Crusades-era Muslim/Christian immortal warrior husbands! However, a preliminary reading indicates that fandom is a bit hazy on what actually happened during the Crusades. Or where. Or why. They’re a much-mythologised piece of history so this isn’t surprising, but at popular request – ok like five people that counts – I’m here with a fandom-oriented Crusades primer.

Please bear in mind that I’m not a historian and this primer is largely based on my notes and recollections from several undergraduate history courses I took in the mid ‘00s. I expect the field has moved on somewhat, and I welcome corrections from people with more up-to-date knowledge! There’s also this very good post by someone who is a lot less lazy about links than I am.

Where did they take place?

The Crusades, broadly, describe a series of invasions of the Eastern Mediterranean (modern Israel, Syria, Lebanon, Beirut, Jordan, Cyprus, and parts of Turkey and Greece) by (mostly) Western European armies, religiously justified by their belief that the city of Jerusalem should be part of ‘Christendom’, i.e. ruled by a Christian monarch. In the first expression of European settler colonialism, nobles from the area of modern France and Germany founded four Crusader Kingdoms (aka ‘Outremer’, ‘overseas’) – the County of Edessa, the Principality of Antioch, the Kingdom of Jerusalem, and County of Tripoli.

  After a first unexpected wave of success in the First Crusade (1096-1099), which surprised everybody including the participants by conquering Jerusalem, the Crusaders were gradually driven and the last part of Outremer was lost to European control with the fall of the city of Acre in 1291. Crusades after that still nominally aimed to take Jerusalem but rarely got very far, with the Fourth Crusade famously sacking the city of Byzantium, their nominal Christian allies, in 1204. During this whole period activity that can be considered part of the ‘Crusades’ took place around the Eastern Mediterranean.

The most important thing to remember is that modern national boundaries didn’t exist in the same way; Italy, Germany, France, Spain, and the UK were not unified nations. Most of the southern Iberian peninsula (modern Spain) was ‘al-Andalus’, Muslim kingdoms ruled by nobility originally from North Africa. Sicily had been an Emirate up until very recently, when it had been conquered by Normans (Vikings with a one-century stopover in France). Italy and Germany in particular were a series of city-states and small duchies; Genoa, if you’re curious about it for some reason, ;), was a maritime power with more or less a distinct language, Genoese Ligurian (their dialect had enough of a navy to qualify). England had recently become part of the Anglo-Norman Empire, which ruled most of England (but not Wales or Scotland) and also large parts of modern France, particularly Normandy.

The Muslim world was similarly fragmented in ways that don’t correspond to modern national boundaries - there were multiple taifa states in Iberia, the Almoravid Caliphate in Morocco, the Fatimid Caliphate in Egypt, and (nominally) the Abbasid Caliphate in Baghdad, one of the great cities of the era, although the Seljuq Turks were the major power in Anatolia (modern Turkey) and what we describe as the ‘Middle East’. 

The largest Christian unified power in the wider European/Mediterranean region was the Byzantine Empire, centered on the city of Constantinople (modern Istanbul), which quite fairly considered itself the direct continuation of the Roman Empire, the capital having been moved there by the Emperor Constantine in 323. In fact, the really big political and religious question of the time for Christians was who got to be considered the centre of Christendom (there was no real concept of ‘Europe’ at this point) – the Orthodox Church, the Byzantine Emperor, and the Patriarch of Constantinople in Constantinople, or the Holy Roman Emperor (er…dude in nominal charge of a lot of German and Italian principalities) and the Roman Catholic Church led by the Pope in Rome. The Orthodox Church in Constantinople and the Roman Catholic Church had agreed to disagree in 1054 in the Great Schism, so in 1096 this issue was still what you’d call fresh.

Onto this stage of East-West disagreement and the heritage of Rome crashed the Seljuq Turks, a Muslim group from Central Asia who swept through Anatolia (modern Turkey), Byzantium’s richest province, culminating in the Battle of Manzikert in 1071 which wiped out Byzantium as an independent military force. The southern provinces had fallen under Muslim rule long ago, during the era of the first Umayyad Caliphate – including Jerusalem, famous as the birthplace of Christianity and a holy site for Judaism and Islam as well, but also a fairly uninteresting provincial town. Until...

Until…what?

Here’s why all the geography matters: It is generally accepted that the First Crusade kicked off largely because Alexios I Comnenus, the then-current Byzantine Emperor, requested aid from Western Europe against the Muslim Seljuq Turks. Byzantium often recruited mercenaries from Western Europe; the Normans (aka the Vikings), who had settled Normandy and southern Italy in the past century were frequent hires. Hence those runes in the Hagia Sophia.

Meanwhile in Western Europe, the Pope – Urban II – was having difficulty with the current Emperor, and was eager to heal the Schism and establish the primacy of the Roman church. He declared that an expedition to aid the Byzantines would have the blessing of the church, and that a new kind of pilgrimage – an armed pilgrimage – was religiously acceptable, if aimed against the enemies of Christendom.

Pilgrimages (travelling to holy sites, such as churches that held saints’ relics) were a major part of European Christianity at the time and many people went on pilgrimage in their lives, so this was a familiar concept. Western Europe was also somewhat overpopulated with knights – don’t think plate armour, this is 1096, think very murderous rich men with good swords – who could always use forgiveness, on account of all the murder. The Roman Catholic church, unlike the Eastern Orthodox church, also subscribed to the concept of ‘just war’, that war could be acceptable for the right reasons. And so a whole lot of nobles from the area of modern France, Belgium, England, Germany, and Italy decided that this new Crusade thing was something they wanted in on – and they took several armies with them.

I’m going to skip over a bunch of stuff involving the People’s Crusade (a popular movement of poorer people, got literally slaughtered in Anatolia), the massacres of Jews in Eastern Europe, and a lot of battles, but the takeaway is this: Alexios probably thought he was getting mercenaries. He got a popular religious movement that, somewhat unfortunately, actually achieved its goal (Jerusalem), did next to nothing to solve his Anatolia problem, and gave a succession of Popes a convenient outlet for errant knights, nobles, and rulers: going on Crusade.  

How many were there?

Official Crusades that anybody cares about: Nine, technically. Crusade-like military events that immortal soldiers might have got involved with, plus local stoushes in Outremer: way more. WAY more.

The First Crusade (1096-1099): First and original, set a frankly (heh) terrible precedent, founded the Crusader States and captured Jerusalem. Only regarded as a clash of civilisations by the Western Christians involved. For the local Muslims it was just another day at the ‘Byzantium hires Frankish mercenaries to make our lives difficult’ office.

The Crusade of 1101: Everybody who peaced out on the First Crusade hurried to prove they were actually up for it, once the remaining First Crusaders took Jerusalem. Didn’t do much.

The Second Crusade (1147-1150): The County of Edessa falls, Eleanor of Aquitaine happens (my fave), the only winners are the people who semi-accidentally conquer Lisbon (in Portugal) (but from Muslim rulers so that…counts?).

The Third Crusade (1189-1192): You all know this one because it has RICHARD THE LIONHEART and SALADIN. Much Clash of Civilisations, very Noble, did enough to keep the remaining Crusader kingdoms going but access to Jerusalem for Christian pilgrims was obtained by treaty, not conquest. Indirectly responsible for the Robin Hood mythos when Richard gets banged up in prison on the way home and is away from England for ages.

The Fourth Crusade (1202-1204): Aims for Jerusalem, ends up sacking the Eastern Orthodox city of Constantinople, just not a great time for anybody, more or less the eventual cause of the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans in 1453.  

The Fifth Crusade (1217-1221): Still going for Jerusalem, starts with Cairo instead, does not get anywhere it wants to even after allying with the Anatolian Sultanate of Rum, making the whole ‘Christians vs Muslims’ thing even murkier than it already was post the Fourth Crusade.

The Sixth Crusade (1228-1229): Somehow these things are still going. Nobody even does very much fighting. Access to Jerusalem is negotiated by treaty, yet again.

The Seventh, Eight, and Ninth Crusades: Seriously nobody cares anymore and also nobody is trying very hard. Kings have better things to do, mostly. People end up in Egypt a lot. We covered these in one lecture and I have forgotten all of it.

The Albigensian Crusade (1209-1229): Why take a three-year trip to the Holy Land to fight pagans when you can fight the ones in your own backyard (southern France), AND take their stuff? Famously the source of the probably apocryphal ‘Kill them all, God will know His own’ quote, regarding the massacre of most of a city harbouring Cathars (a Christian sect deemed heretical).

Can we circle back to that ‘massacres of Jews’ bit? WTF?

Crusades, historically, were Not A Good Time for Jewish communities in Europe; when Christians were riled up to go and Fight The Infidel, it was a lot quicker to massacre local Jews than travel to the Holy Land. Also, then you could take their stuff. I will note here that it is VERY TACKY to use historical pogroms as backdrops for your non-Jewish main characters so keep this in mind but, like, use with extreme caution in fanfic, okay? Generally life was a lot easier for Jewish communities in Muslim-ruled states in this period, which is why so many Hispanic Jews ended up in Turkey after they were expelled from Spain. 

What were they really about, then?

Historians still Have Opinions about this. Genuine religious fervour was absolutely a key motivator, especially of the First Crusade. The ability to wage war sanctioned by the Church, or to redeem your local sins by going and fighting against the pagans, was part of that, too. Control of key trade routes to the East was probably not not a part of it. The Crusader States were definitely Baby’s First Experiment With Settler Colonialism, and paved the theological and rhetorical ground for the colonisation of the Americas. But many individuals on the Christian side would absolutely have believed they were doing God’s work. The various Muslim rulers and certainly the local Christian, Jewish, and Muslim inhabitants of the Holy Land itself were mostly just getting invaded by Franks. As time wound on the Crusades became more and more political (frequently featuring intra-religious violence and inter-religious alliances) and less and less about their forever nominal goal, control of Jerusalem.

Basically not too bad but I’m not totally confident on some of the bits about motivation (see: white supremacists love this period, ugh.)

Why did they stop?

The prospect of re-taking Jerusalem vanished entirely as the Ottoman Empire centralised and took a firm hold over most of the Levant (and made inroads into Europe, as far as Austria, taking Constantinople in 1453 and finally ending the continuous Roman Empire), the Spanish Reconquista and various intra-European conflicts (the Hundred Years’ War, for example) absorbed military attention, and then the Reformation happened and half of Europe stopped listening to the Pope and started stabbing each other over who was the right kind of Christian. But the concept lingered; white supremacists love the Crusades. Which is why it is a very good idea to be sparing with Crusader imagery around Niccolò in fanfic set in the modern era, and please for fuck’s sake stop with the ‘crugayders’ tag, Yusuf wasn’t a Crusader.  

What other fun facts should I keep in mind re: Nicky | Nicolò and Joe | Yusuf?

·        Genoa is not the same as Italy; Nicolò is Nicolò di Genova and would have spoken Genoese (Ligurian) and considered himself to be Genoese. Italian as a language didn’t really exist yet. The language he and Yusuf would most likely have had in common was the ‘lingua franca’ (Frankish language, literally) of the Mediterranean trading region, a pidgin based heavily on maritime Italian languages. Yusuf 300% would have thought of him as a ‘Frank’ (the generic term for Western Christians) and probably annoyed him by calling him that until at least 1200 or so.

·        Yusuf is apparently from ‘Maghrib’, which I assume means al-Maghrib/the Maghreb (as his actor is IIRC of Tunisian descent), i.e. North Africa. He could have had relatives in al-Andalus (southern modern Spain), he may have spoken languages other than Arabic natively (Mozarabic or Berber), his native area had universities before Europe did. Basically: this is as useful as saying he’s ‘from Europe’, do better backstory writers.

·        Taking the whole ‘Nicky used to be a priest’ backstory at face value: being a priest in 1096 looked pretty different to how it did even 200 years later. They were still working on the celibacy thing. The famous monastic orders were still forming. Some priests could and did hold lands and go to war (this wasn’t common but it happened, especially if they were nobles by birth). Nicolò di Genova would not necessarily have seen a conflict between going on Crusade and being a priest, is what I’m getting at. If he was ALSO trained as a knight, he was from a wealthy family; it took the equivalent several villages to support a knight.

·        ‘Period-typical homophobia’ is going to look very different for this period. They are NOT getting beaten up for holding hands. Or sharing a bed! Or even kissing, depending on the circumstances! I am not an expert on Islamic sexual mores of the era but Christian ones were heavily on the side of ‘unsanctioned sex is bad, sanctioned (marital) sex is slightly less bad’, and there was no concept of ‘being gay’. An interfaith relationship would be in some ways more of a problem for them than the same-sex one (and in some ways less difficult to navigate than a heterosexual interfaith relationship.) The past is another country.

We have shizltons of food. According to this 2018 report from the World Hunger Education Service, we’re already producing enough food in the world to support every person living in it. Additionally, according to this article in the Journal of Sustainable Agriculture that was written by Eric Holt-Giménez, et al., the world’s food production is on par with providing sustenance for about 10 billion people (an abridged version of the JoSA article is here on HuffPost, thank you Mr. Holt-Giménez). As of, aboooout...5 hours ago when I first started writing this post, the world population was at 7.77 billion, and that’s rounding up. We have another 2.23 billion people that need to be born right this second for that fear to be actual Danger Zone levels that common media is insisting we’re getting close to (a whole 28.7% population jump right at this moment, when we’re only increasing by about 1% per year at the moment). That, and our methods for food production increases the amount of food at a higher exponential rate than the human reproduction rate. 

Ah, actually, according to Dr. Doug Boucher on the Union of Concerned Scientists blog, human reproduction hasn’t been exponential for a while. Reproduction rates have been in roughly a straight line since the last exponential curve that occurred and ended in the 1960s... Hm. Everyone remember baby boomers? There’s a reason that generation is called baby boomer—all the post-war survivors were very, very interested in passing on their genes and continuing the human race after such a drastic event caused them to believe that they would not survive long. That high of an increase was never going to be constant, so the idea that the world’s population is still increasing in the same rate as a post World War generation is shortsighted at best and flat out stupid at worst. As of the 1960s, worldwide birth rates have been on a gradual decrease, with some countries now complaining that it is decreasing too much (Yeah, I’m looking at you China...and, surprisingly, Europe’s looking a little worried, too). Still, we will still need to continue food production in order to stay above the need line since we’re at about 1% general world population growth each year now, however, as The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations states, the main issue among others regarding food production is not to provide more for already wealthy nations or that there would be too many people to provide food for, but to efficiently distribute food to developing and/or impoverished countries or poor communities, as noted in their 2002, 2006, and 2012 reports.

Now, that was just food. Water’s a similar yet different story. Even though only 2.5% of the water on Earth is fresh and only about 1% of that is usable because the ice caps are big chunks of freshwater, the Earth is pretty dang big. For example, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) states in an estimate that freshwater lakes make up about .26% of our freshwater amounts...which is about 21,830 cubic miles of water. The average U.S. shower head lets out 2.5 gallons of water per minute. If you take a 10 minute shower....nah, let’s go further—if you take a 20 minute shower, that’s 50 gallons of freshwater for cleaning your body. Terrible, right? Well, the conversion between gallons and cubic miles is to divide the gallons by 1.101e+12. For those of you who don’t like letters in math or scientific notation, that “e” indicates how many times the “point” needs to move forwards or backwards. 

So, let’s do the math. To convert 50 gallons to it’s needed amount in cubic miles, we have to divide 50 by 1.101e+12, or, 50 / 1,101,000,000,000. What’s that Johnny? Looks like your 20 minute shower just used up about 4.5408e-11 cubic miles of freshwater!! Still don’t like letters in your math? That’s 0.000000000045408 cubic miles of water! Just for funzies, if all 7.77 billion people took a 20 minute shower at the same time, each one using 0.000000000045408 cubic miles of water, everyone would use about 0.35282016 cubic miles of water at the same time. But what about baths? In the U.S., a common bathtub holds about 80 gallons (302 liters) of water. That’s not counting the small bathtubs that only hold 40 gallons, but I’m going for the larger denominator here. So, once again, we have to use that equation to get some cubic miles: 80 / 1,101,000,000,000 =  0.000000000072653 cubic miles per 80 gallon bath. But really, who uses the whole bathtub when taking a bath? But again, for funzies, if all 7.77 billion people, including infants, took a full, 80 gallon bath all at once, that would be using about 0.56451381 cubic miles of water. Ah, speaking of other resources, all of this stuff is interconnected, you know. As you might have read in the previously provided articles, food and water production is integrated with other resources, whether it is in the production of those resources or the resources are used to produce food/water. Corporations use high amounts of freshwater to provide energy for our crops while sometimes mixing the water with harmful pesticides or feeding the animals with water and food pumped full of harmful drugs (not all the drugs are bad, but some are), then other corporations use and waste tons of food that end up getting dumped into landfills and producing enough methane to give cow farts a run for their money. “Overpopulation” has been attached to hunger, climate change, economic deficits, poverty, etc., but what it really looks like for the food issue at least is that it’s an issue with misplaced distribution and a waste of resources at the usage level on a macroeconomic scale. I would hazard to state that, considering the interconnected nature of different living necessities, the lack of adequate distribution is the cause for the other issues as well. In fact, it is proven by several articles and studies listed that it is not “overpopulation” but poverty that is the Number 1 cause for hunger and a lack of access to water. But that’s another rabbit hole.

So then, if it’s not an individual person issue or because of more babies being born each year, especially to people in certain *coughnonwhiteand/orcolonizedcough* countries, I guess you could say it’s... corporate lies.

Not saying that you’re a fool if you want to help the environment in your little ways, like monitoring personal food waste and taking shorter showers to keep the world well fed and watered. The idea that there were simply too many people being born – most of them in the developing world where population growth rates had started to take off – filtered into the arguments of radical environmental groups such as Earth First! Certain factions within the group became notorious for remarks about extreme hunger in regions with burgeoning populations such as Africa – which, though regrettable, could confer environmental benefits through a reduction in human numbers.

In reality, the global human population is not increasing exponentially, but is in fact slowing and predicted to stabilise at around 11 billion by 2100. More importantly, focusing on human numbers obscures the true driver of many of our ecological woes. That is, the waste and inequality generated by modern capitalism and its focus on endless growth and profit accumulation.

I expect this sentiment will increase, because we know that one of the first results of climate change is going to be that people living in areas affected by rising sea levels are going to be displaced, and these are mostly poorer populations. We’re really bad about blaming displaced people for their own displacement (see our attitudes about those currently fleeing Central American violence), so I imagine that relocation is not going to be easy for these folks! Those of us who care about not being assholes should start being aware of these uncharitable notions now, because it’s only going to get worse as we get more crowded. 

If you want to summarize the changes in family structure over the past century, the truest thing to say is this: We’ve made life freer for individuals and more unstable for families. We’ve made life better for adults but worse for children. We’ve moved from big, interconnected, and extended families, which helped protect the most vulnerable people in society from the shocks of life, to smaller, detached nuclear families (a married couple and their children), which give the most privileged people in society room to maximize their talents and expand their options. The shift from bigger and interconnected extended families to smaller and detached nuclear families ultimately led to a familial system that liberates the rich and ravages the working-class and the poor.

The Miys, Ch. 20

Happy Tuesday, everyone!  Here is the latest chapter.  Although there is nothing graphic contained within, I want to be very clear about the following items it does contain. If I have forgotten something, please send me a message an let me know.  All in all, I really like this chapter.  We revisit a very early mention of gender affirmation surgery

The week after the swimming area opened in BioLab2, the Council meeting opened unexpectedly with comments from Councillor Huynh.  Grey had apparently approached him in the meantime with insurmountable logic and exhaustive data to show that they had thrown their support behind the platforms that had been previously postponed.  To be fair, Giang Huynh was very gracious in his complete surrender, admitting that building the platforms would be a valuable challenge for his team. Looking directly to me as the one overseeing Occupational allotment, he asked how many workers could be dedicated to the task.

“I have fifty-three engineers and twenty-three apprentices that are currently not assigned,” I advised.  I had the data so that I could argue in the event that he pushed back; I never expected Grey to approach him in private.  Though I was unfamiliar with their background, Councillor Hodenson had always seemed very by-the-book.  I was impressed.

“I want priority given to the engineers with apprentices,” Huynh responded firmly, breaking me out of my musings. “The apprentices need their training hours.  Estimates show that we would only need twenty-seven workers on the project, due to need for materials to cure.”

Xiomara scowled. “You want to fill the work allotment with mainly apprentices?”

“Negative.  I want all twenty-three apprentices, plus their mentors, and ten more engineers just in case to help out.  Apprentices are not cleared to work without direct supervision from an approved mentor. If any of the apprentices’ mentors are not certified in underwater welding or fabrication, I’ll find them temporary mentors who are.  In fact, Councillor Reid? If I can find enough engineers to mentor any of the rest who do not have underwater experience, do we have the resources to at least rotate them out in the remaining slots?”

I was speechless for a moment.  Huynh was notorious for being thrifty with labor, begrudging every head assigned to any given project.  But here he was, asking for more personnel to be assigned to this than necessary?  “Um, I mean…” I cleared my throat. “Yes. I believe we do, but you are talking about having nearly sixty people assigned to a project you just told me should only need twenty-seven.”

“Underwater welding and fabrication are valuable skills,” he announced. “And it is very unlikely we will have another opportunity on the ship for these people to learn it.  Kepler 442b is a very wet planet, so I foresee it being a skill they need. If I can find the necessary skillsets to train them, I would be grateful if you can juggle the logistics of rotating the personnel out. It will cause the project to take longer overall, but I think it will maximize the benefit to those onboard.”

“I will do my best,” I promised, still slightly stunned.

“Does anyone have anything else to add before we move to the first topic on the agenda?” Grey asked lightly with a glance around the room.  As everyone was silent, they took that as an indication to proceed. “The first official item on the agenda this week is an update on the gender affirmation surgeries.”

Murmurs broke out around the table.  The genetic surgeries had started not long after I came on board, and had been deemed necessary procedures for anyone who chose to undergo the testing and surgery.  However, they were not required, so overall it was a hot-button topic.  Only three genetic surgeries could be done at a time, while over six hundred had qualified.  The solution was argued over for nearly a month before we found a method everyone could agree on: names on slips of paper, drawn from a receptacle by one of Noah’s avatars.  The oldest style of lottery in history, for the most advanced reason we had ever found. Only the Miys were allowed to handle the slips of paper, which had been printed in raised script to make it possible for them to read the names. Once a name was drawn, the recipient had the option to undergo the surgery or gift their slot to someone else.

In a turn of humanity that should not have surprised anyone on board, but nonetheless made the Miys utterly baffled, every single person who identified as transgender or nonbinary had signed up for the lottery, whether they wanted it or not.  When a name was drawn of someone who qualified but did not want the genetic surgery, they immediately were gifting it to anyone they knew who had been tormented for their identity on Earth.  Grey had even participated, gifting their slot to a man who had been mutilated with acid Before the End for the artificial atrocity of being born with a female body.

Clearing their throat to break up the low noise around the table, Grey continued their report. “As of this morning, one hundred and seventeen individuals have completed genetic surgery.  All reports indicate they are thriving and happy, including the reversal of both new and old injuries sustained prior to the surgery.  The largest complaint we have received is regarding the incidental removal of tattoos, but the overwhelming sentiment is that it is a small price to pay.” A watery grin crossed their face, remembering the man who they had given their slot to.  While he was by no means handsome, Grey insisted his was the most beautiful face they had ever seen after surgery. “Of the six hundred and seventy-four who qualified for the surgery, four hundred and six have opted to undergo it.  All completely androgen insensitive individuals preferred the bodies they already had, requesting only that internal testes be removed, while most incomplete AIS patients have decided to undergo the genetic surgery for whichever gender they are most comfortable with.  The Miys have accommodated this fully. Several individuals who identify as non-binary but qualified for the procedure have declined entirely, while others, such as myself, requested only for cosmetic surgery to align with our identities of being neither male nor female.”

“If I may ask,” Xiomara interjected. “For those who do not want the surgeries, why are they enrolled in the lottery?”

Grey nodded firmly. “The lottery is, by all means, the agreed upon way to decide on the limited slots available, especially knowing that all will get their opportunity by the end. However, there is no truly fair way for any one person to evenly weigh the emotional strain on every person in the lottery.  For myself, my logic was thus: if I can change, even in a small way, the very possible random chance that all those who were tortured, mutilated, or abused in the Before for something beyond their control, it is my responsibility to change it.  By putting my name in and giving my slot to Hendrick, I changed the chance that he would be last. He now has his own face, both hands, all his hair, because I took that chance.  His fully functional body drastically outweighed my need to be androgynous.”  A thrust of their chin showed the defiance they threw in the face of anyone who would question.

Xiomara only smiled. “Thank you, Grey.  I never doubted the concept, I just want it on the record in the event there is an objection at a later date.”

“My pleasure, Councillor Kalloe.  Moving on, regarding the population implications, I have been assured by our host that genetic samples were taken both before and after all genetic surgeries, and are being compared for which is most viable before allowing the donor to ultimately make the choice on which or both will be included in Colonial stores.”

Several members winced at that.  Huynh was the one to speak up.  “Can we not come up with a better term than ‘Colonial’? I know we will be establishing a colony on another world, but for several of the cultures on board, the term just has a bad feeling attached to it.”

I raised my hand for attention. “I can take a poll of personnel on the ship. We have not decided on a name for the new planet, anyway, and this gives us a perfect opportunity to decide.”  The idea met with unanimous approval, allowing the meeting to move on.

After we adjourned, I found myself trotting briskly down the corridor. “Councillor Hodenson.  Councilor Hodenson!  Wait up!” They stopped and politely waited for me to catch up. “I have some questions, and I feel like you are the best person to ask, if that’s okay?” They nodded. “You mentioned population implications of the gender affirmations, and genetic material being taken.  Please forgive me, but I’m newer to the Council, and I don’t completely understand.  Can you explain what that was about?”

“Of course, Sophia,” Grey nodded, pushing their glasses up. “You are likely already aware that the entirety of the ship has temporarily had any reproductive abilities suspended for the duration of the voyage?” It was my turn to nod; while I wasn’t absolutely sure that was the case, I had definitely appreciated not have a menstrual cycle in the entire time I had been on board. “One of the issues that led to the collapse of Earth’s biosphere was overpopulation.  Add to that the fact that the ship can only carry a finite number of passengers and is loaded to absolute capacity in all residential spaces, children are not a good idea while we are in transit.  So, as we were all brought on board, the Miys provided everyone with an implant that will prevent reproduction until removed.”

“Okay, I’m following, but I have a question: there hasn’t been a religious uproar?”

“Very minimal.  Mostly handled from within their particular sect, though largely all handled the same: Any deity who commanded they be fruitful would want them to establish a fruitful colony before a fruitful family.  The decline of Earth has been used frequently as an example of how a fruitful family before a fruitful environment was erroneous.”

“That’s fair. Okay, continue please.”

“Gladly.  While implanting the reproductive blockers, the Miys also took genetic samples of each person brought on board.  This will be used, once we are on Kepler 442b, to start producing children for the new world.  We have to establish the settlement first, of course, and the Miys are going to monitor our colonial growth as they allow children, simply to ensure that we can support the new additions. Also, no two children will have the same two parents; the goal is to ensure genetic diversity. At that point, we will still have our reproductive blockers, but once all the genetic material currently on board has been used – and there is enough for each person to provide for two offspring – then reproductive blockers will be removed for anyone wishing to naturally produce additional offspring.”

I gave a low whistle.  They were ensuring the best possibility for every single genetic trait on board to be passed down to future generations.  It was pretty ingenious. “What about people who don’t want children, or may not be able to care for them?”

“We have just over ten thousand people on board, Sophia,” Grey gave me a skeptical look.  “Surely you realize that enough of those come from large families that they would rather have additional children sooner than wait for the ability to produce their own? There is already a triad who requested to go on record as being willing to take in up to twenty children if necessary, even if none are any of their own genetic offspring.”

“It’s like the Duggars,” I muttered, remembering an older family on Earth that had been held up as an example of ‘irresponsible reproduction’ before the End.  In only two generations, they had gone from two people to well over a hundred.

“Not quite,” was the chuckled response that let me know I had been heard. “It is very common for plural marriages to produce and/or raise a significant number of offspring, from what my research details. Also, bear in mind that several cultures on Earth practiced plural marriage, even historically.  Despite the Christian bloc being the most vocal in the past three centuries regarding monogamy, they also had the oldest historical records of men marrying multiple ‘wives’ and having consorts besides.”

“How you came to that conclusion, I would greatly like to know.  No, I did not grow up as part of any Abrahamic religion, actually, although I did grow in in Israel.  My parents – all four by the way – were part of a very strict religious sect that emphasized accepting the life we were provided and working hard at what we had.  They did not believe in any deity, actually, but also discouraged emotion as “there is no use appealing to an uncaring universe for anything you cannot change”.  That apparently included the gender you were born to, as they were very – unaccepting of my nonbinary identity. All of my parents insisted that I was a girl, and should behave as one, marry, and produce a family.  None of them accepted that I am not a girl, nor am I a boy. I am just… Grey.”

“Neither fish nor fowl, nor good red meat,” I said with a smile.

“And what does that leave me?” they asked indignantly.

“The vegetables, clearly, which I am heartily fond of!  Who has a roast without potatoes and carrots? And a bit of onion, usually. It just isn’t muchy enough if you don’t have vegetables on the side, usually two.  I love food, and food need vegetables, all the time.   I blame your parents, honestly. All four.” I winked at them as they looked somewhat confused. “Come on, they named you Grey. Neither black, nor white. Both and neither. Grey.  I think it suits you.”

“I chose that name, honestly.  My birth name – “

“Don’t know, don’t care,” I cut off. “YOU are Grey, you are my friend.  Grey is the only name I have ever known for you, and I like it even more knowing you chose it. You did a spectacular job there – it’s very pleasant, in every regard. If you insist on telling me your dead birth-name, I will gladly listen and never call you that name.  But know this: that name wasn’t you.”

For the first time, they smiled fully at me.  It was gummy and eye-crinkling, and delightful.  A very good smile. “I think I would rather you just call me Grey.”

Humans are weird - Our humanity

So, I’ve had another idea for the humans are weird tag, and it is both beautiful in what it implies for us and absolutely horrifying and sickening. You see, my mind went down the path of ‘what if what makes us unique among the aliens is our humanity?’ and not with humanity as species, but as compassion and morals and ‘you-just-don't-do-that’. What if aliens managed to get in space only by being partially hive-minded, and don’t have any concept of love and friendship and compassion and caring and all that stuff, but also things like laws, imprisonment and second chances? They barely have a word for Alliance, and those few they make are very brittle and frequently crash and burn when they simultaneously turn their weapons on each other. That’s not necessarily cause by vindictiveness, but maybe an evolutionary trait in them to get rid of overpopulation endangering their much, much smaller planets, or due to a predator looking so much like themselves they had to have that mistrust to survive and nature hasn’t gotten rid of it yet even after they hunted the predator into extinction. So the largest they have are clans of perhaps fifteen, each led by some sort of mayor, but they frequently have infighting with the head changing, however, they have this... kind of list in their heads with the names of all other currently living specimen, and as soon as that reaches a certain point the urge to kill each other stops immediately, and knowledge and discovery is passed around in the same way. Guess that makes them hermaphrodites though. And what if, when they discover Earth, we are still having some war or the other, and they draw their own conclusions from it?

Aiehas looked towards the mostly blue planet in satisfaction. Their species needed new room for settlements to avoid another killing spree. Their own crew, which in the beginning had thirty people, had been reduced to ten and needed special shielding to not be dragged into the urge to kill again - they couldn’t afford to lose even one more person or the ship had a high chance to crash and burn when landing, and that was something nobody on board wanted. After all, nobody wanted to die, it was just sometimes necessary. This planet though... Well, it might register as Deathworld of the highest class ever found, but certainly, due to the inherit lack of sentient life it would have, they could just get rid of the wildlife and fauna and live there too. As such, xe was extremely surprised when xir first mate called out to xe, claiming there would be satellites and space stations orbiting the planet. Had another species already found it? But what species would voluntarily live together on such a tight space as a space station? Xir own crew had to be forced into the ship! Of course, they could always kill off the contestant and get rid of the evidence - as long as they weren’t seen at least. “Scan the surface.” “Sir, there are... settlements. And they’re gigantic!” Now xe literally whirled around, pushed xir first mate away from the computer and looked for xir self. Indeed, there were huge constructs of metal, stone, glass and wood on the surface, constructs that couldn’t be anything else than housings - for dozens of people each! What sane species would build things like that? It was a waste of resources, especially with so many of the constructs next to each other. Xe could not think of any species in the intergalactic register - established so other species would know when another planet was empty because one species managed to erase itself from existence - that would do such a thing, and just wondered whether or not a Deathworld of class thirteen really just managed to develop sentient, intelligent life, when xir optical sensors were drawn to where the scanner detected... fighting. It was a larger amount of energy signatures than xe had ever seen in one place, but it was clearly fighting, considering when one went off, some others didn’t anymore. There were other signatures too, one highlighting an entire island, and nets and nets of small ones, with a staggering amount within the constructs - other fights, perhaps? - but they weren’t all that telling, though the ones traveling the atmosphere were - they somehow had managed to develop long-distance rockets, something xir species along some others was still figuring out. Interesting. Xir eyes searched the surface of the planet, before finding a blank space within an oddly formed one. It was pretty much in the middle, they would be able to advance in every direction, but was also far enough away to not be found without provocation. “There. Land there.” It was also a reasonable amount of space away from the fighting, so the rockets would need to be aimed at them specifically to hit them, and they could advance to most of the landmasses on their stalks. Of course, they would have to figure out something for the not quite as big landmass in the west and the large island in the south east, as well as all the other islands, but they could do that after making place for themselves on the biggest landmass.”Sir.” Another of xir subordinates, looking a little terrified. Xe was over quickly - if it was terrifying, it wouldn’t be good. “I-I think I just accidentally accessed their hive-mind with my computer.” Xe stared too. That was ludicrous. The other specimen, however, just turned the monitor of xir computer a little, showing so many signals. “Well, see if you can find a way to translate!” Aiehas snapped at the crewmember, who immediately got to work, having only been saved by xir activation of the instinct block. (Yes, they mistook the internet for a hive-mind.)

The aliens had landed, unfortunately for them, in the middle of Germany. As such, they were noticed almost instantly, and a military team was send out to either greet them, or, if they prove hostile, exterminate them and hopefully reverse engineer the technology. The war in the middle east could use the boon of whatever weapons they had, and the civil applications of the technology of a spaceship were too lucrative to pass up on in case they were, in fact, hostile. Of course, the entire thing was watched by their superiors through one of the bodycams, in case of hostility they needed to know immediately, if friendly they could later publish it. They would probably do that either way, but if they were friendly they would obscure the identities of the soldiers. One of these soldiers was Laura Petersen, who was what civilians would call a sniper and thus got dispatched some distance away from her team. Her rifle held one of the cameras,meant to give them a higher and clearer vantage point. As it was, she was the first to spot the... extraterrestrials. They looked a lot like the zombies with the awfully long tongue out of the Persistent Evil series. Just with their brains covered up and walking on two legs instead of four, plus probably a not as long tongue, considering it wasn’t hanging out of their mouth. “Otto, three o’clock.” The captain of the team turned, finally spotting the fleshy things. They didn’t wear much clothing aside from some sort of leather that was probably more armor than clothing, or at the very least rank indicating uniform. The one who volunteered to risk their own live and try and speak with the aliens now spotted them too, and barely waited long enough for the rest of the soldiers to be in position before stepping towards the visitors. Laura couldn’t remember his name, some rookie who barely absolved the necessary training for this. He was the only one who was willing to die just to be the first to officially make contact with lifeforms from outer space. Now he stepped forwards, likely to do his job, keeping from smiling due to training. The aliens did not even wait for him to bring out a single world, already lashing out and practically tearing him apart. She almost screamed. That was NOT what should have happened! As it was, she had better training than that, instead immediately taking aim and hitting the first one, closing in on her captain, with a bullet through the head. At least their brain seemed to be in the same location, as his skull practically exploded and send bits everywhere. Damn. Things like that were why she was a sniper and not melee fighter. She’d probably have retched at being showered with brain like that. Some of the aliens now took some steps back, and another bellowed out, in heavily accented, terribly pronounced English. “Surrender or we will destroy you completely!” Well, that wouldn’t do. Seems their captain thought the same, as he merely shouted back a no and shot the alien in question between... well, she’d have to go with optic sensors because it weren’t exactly eyes. Considering the small number of opponents, it was over before any human other than the rookie got so much as a scratch, but most of her teammates were now showered in bits of alien, and obviously grossed out. Swiftly, she disassembled the rifle, making her way down the hill. Her teammates seemed rather bemused she barely looked ruffled while they probably wanted nothing more than a shower and regretted getting out of the bed that morning. “Good shots, Laura.” “Thanks Captain. What about...?” “Yes, we should probably sweep it to make sure there are not more of these fuckers hiding in there.” He wiped a bit of brain from his brow, expression thoroughly disgusted as he flicked his hand to get rid of it.

The inside of the ship was, if possible, worse than the outside. They had to walk slightly hunched, indicating the aliens preferred to walk on all four instead of bipedal as they did on the outside, and there were rotting corpses of them neatly stacked up in what seemed to be their equivalent to the eating hall, some of which evidently been used as food despite the reasonably full storage. One of the team members lost his breakfast as that, but did manage to get outside before actually spitting. There was some information on the race there, but also, funnily enough, a computer looking advanced but running way worse than a modern laptop opened to the internet. Well, that would explain where they knew English from.

It had been two of Earth’s years since the Humans had joined the galactic ‘community’, as they called it, though none of the other species knew what they meant with that. Nor did they know how to handle them, who domesticated predators, lived on planets without killing all native species, and helped people in need without a second thought - they had words for all of their concepts, but they had so many more, and they were so vastly different from each species they knew that nobody dared raise any appendix against any human - the demise of Aiehas and the disaster of the ‘orphanage’, where another species had decided to get a building full of younglings out of the way without informing the humans as whole, and just not told the ones in the building which ended in the species being constantly held just under the killing limit by humans for multiple years, until they eventually swore on their species’ continued existence to never harm a human ever again, were very well known and terrifying to the aliens in how humanity had no overpopulation switch they could use, and would always do something they called avenging that none of them had a concept of.

On the other hand, they developed way faster than any other race, and had managed to make contact with some other species, though none of them knew how to handle humanity either. They constantly snapped at each other, and after the attempted invasion at the beginning had been fought of by ALL of humanity UNITED, they had gone right back to fighting their own war of the time as if nothing happened.

They could also be cruel, as not only seen in the orphanage disaster, but also knew things like ‘torture’, which was deliberate non-lethal pain infliction, often to gain information, and managed to use some of their ‘medical’ equipment in such a way that once they knocked out any member of any species, they could listen in to the hive-mind of said species without being detected or anyone being able to cut them off.

They had things no other species had - they called them ‘art’ and ‘music’ - and had lost multiple people before they stopped ignoring the danger coming from all other species’ young when there was conflict.

Truly, humanity were like the old folk from the fables - incomprehensible and too complex for any other species to understand.

There's been much debate about the identity of the Incomplete One but so far not much concrete info to go on, so we are still just speculating. Which is what I am gonna do behind a read more, too, and a lot of it.

I know the "Wendigo view" is a popular one and for good reason. This "Naphil/Bastard Spirit view" is actually quite close to that interpretation and (given the similarities of the two entities involved) could be regarded as a "religious remix" of it.

There are several interpretations concerning the identity of the Nephilim, too, but I am going with the "angel view" here, according to which they are semidivine beings born of the sexual mingling of fallen angels and mortal women.

"Nephilim" can be interpreted as "the Fallen Ones", "the Violent Ones" or "giants". They are stuff of legends, the "warriors of old". They and/or their possible descendants are variously referred to as Elioud, Anakim/Anak, Emim (“Terrors”), Rephaim ("Shades"), Gibborim (“Giant Heroes”), Awwim (“Devastators” and “Serpents”).

They are mentioned and alluded to in various sources including the Old Testament (e.g. Genesis, Numbers, Ezekiel), the New Testament (e.g. Peter, Jude), and the apocryphal Book of Enoch, the content of which is echoed/reinforced in the Biblical books indicated above.

Genesis 6:4:

"The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown".

Enoch elaborates:

And it came to pass when the children of men had multiplied that in those days were born unto them beautiful and comely daughters. And the angels, the children of heaven, saw and lusted after them, and said to one another: ‘Come, let us choose us wives from among the children of men and beget us children.' …  And they were in all two hundred; …

[They] took unto themselves wives, and each chose for himself one, and they began to go in unto them and to defile themselves with them, and they taught them charms and enchantments and the cutting of roots, and made them acquainted with plants. And they became pregnant, and they bare great giants, whose height was three thousand ells. Who consumed all the acquisitions of men.

And when men could no longer sustain them, the giants turned against them and devoured mankind. And they began to sin against birds, and beasts, and reptiles, and fish, and to devour one another’s flesh, and drink the blood. … And there arose much godlessness, and they committed fornication, and they were led astray, and became corrupt in all their ways.

So, 200 rebel angels ("sons of God") took mortal women ("daughters of man") as wives, and from their unholy unions powerful half-breed giants were born who later on developed a terrible appetite.

The angels' (Watchers) original mission was to protect and tutor mankind. They, however, deviated from the original plan and began sleeping with mortals. Then, to add insult to injury, they also started teaching them about sorcery, warfare, weapon making, herbalism, astronomy, astrology, meteorology, and even the wicked arts of cosmetics. Most of this knowledge was not meant to be revealed this fast and this early, some never at all, and so it was blamed for the eventual deterioration of mankind. The fallen angels and their offspring came to be viewed as a corrupting, polluting influence that upset the cosmic order, necessitating a "divine correction" to reset the world.

We can find this "demigod connection" in several flood narratives (e. g. Mesopotamian or Greek traditions) where the deluge primarily serves to correct/punish an imbalance caused by human sin, overpopulation, and overstepping of bounds. Boundary breaking, forbidden knowledge, and sin also go hand in hand in the Garden of Eden or Tower of Babel stories where mortal and divine mix in the human desire to "be as gods." Let's just say that this never goes down particularly well with the Lord.

The fallen angels (or “spirit beings who disobeyed”) were cast down into Tartarus ("pit of darkness") to await their fiery destruction with zero chance at salvation. The punishment for mankind came in the form of the Flood that was meant to wipe out their sinful existence and with it the halfbreed Nephilim as well. But some were spared.Their "flesh" died in the deluge but some of them were left to dwell on Earth in the form of dark, disembodied “bastard spirits” until Judgment Day. They have a sort of “divine decree” allowing for their continued earthly presence. Some equate these spirits with the first demons and while they are v similar, I’m not convinced they are exactly the same. Whether these “bastard spirits” are eligible for salvation is left unclear, but the Flood did not finish them off. There is also a direct reference to the Nephilim in a post-Flood era report given to Moses about fearful giants living in fortified towns in a "land that devours its inhabitants" (=Canaan). These are eventually driven out but, once again, some of them survive. What we can conclude for sure is that they are v difficult to eradicate.

How does all this fit into the mixed mythology of The Ancient Magus' Bride (TAMB)?

TAMB draws on various sources for its worldbuilding, and the Bible is one of them. God and the Church hoover on the periphery of the main story, and there are also characters who evoke actual biblical figures.

Characters reference God and Jesus in a manner that signals their existence is not in question and are forces in play, albeit in the background.

Simon is the local priest/preacher who's assigned to observe and report on Elias to his superiors. He has yet to take a more active role but it's clear their relationship is an uneasy one necessitated by lingering concern over Elias' past actions that has nothing to do with him practicing magic: "Why does the Church care so much about you?" "I... did a few things a long time ago. So now they are keeping an eye on me. Confronting them would be a pain for both of us, so sometimes I take care of little errands for them, and they turn a blind eye to me." (Chise and Elias, Chapter 9) "It's the price you pay for your freedom. If it had been any other magus, maybe it wouldn't have caused such a hubbub. But think about it. There has been nary a peep form you for years, and now you suddenly take on an apprentice? I've done my best to hide your actions from the higher-ups, but I can't afford to look the other way this time" (Simon, Chapter 3). "I don't know if you'd count [God] as an ally, but... I'll send up a prayer for you and yours" (Simon, Chapter 39).

Chise names her familiar Ruth which is undoubtedly inspired by the title character of The Book of Ruth who suffers a great personal loss and is the symbol of utmost loyalty and friendship: But Ruth said, "Do not urge me to leave you or turn back from following you; for where you go, I will go, and where you lodge, I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God. Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. Thus may the LORD do to me, and worse, if anything but death parts you and me." (New American Standard Bible) "From now on your home is also mine" (Ruth, Chapter 12). This familiar bond "is the strongest of oaths, a pledge to share anything and everything with the bonded human. Senses, emotions, power, even time. … When you die, he will die, too" (Elias, Chapter 12).

Cartaphilus is none other than the Wandering Jew of Christian legend who is doomed to live until the end of the world because he taunted Jesus on the way to the Crucifixion. According to one version of the story, he struck Jesus and urged him to move faster, to which Jesus replied, “I go, and you will wait till I return.” He was later baptized as Joseph and lived a pious life, hoping for salvation (Encyclopedia Britannica). While TAMB's Cartaphilus is talking a much, much darker approach, he too is ultimately looking for the same thing: "What must we do to find salvation?" (Joseph, Chapter 33)

Rahab also appears in the Bible as an innkeeper/prostitute who helps Joshua's spies. Lindel's master shares her name but we don’t know enough yet to tell what else they have in common.

These examples show that the Bible and its ilk have a clear foothold in TAMB, which opens up all sorts of possibilities, one of them being the Nephilim theory. We don't know much about Elias, but what we know appears to line up with (the similarly limited) information about the Nephilim:

(1) The Nephilim are half-breed giants born from the unholy union of fallen angels and mortal women.

Elias in his "natural form" qualifies as a giant. He is also referred to as "incomplete" or "half-formed", an "abomination", and a "failed creature". His half-breed status is repeatedly emphasized, the Spriggan going as far as calling him a "cur" (Chapter 41).

Another curious detail pops up in the 3-part OVA where Chise is gifted a book titled The Lonely Little Star. Miura tells her,

"You might see nothing but pitch-black darkness right now. But you have to keep trying and trying, looking into the dark world. And off in the distance you'll surely find some light. … like the child of a star. And when you find the child of a star, they will surely find you, too. And you'll shine light on each other. And then your world will no longer be pitch-black. ... I truly believe you will meet a child of a star who will light your world."

If we accept that Elias is one of the Nephilim, then he was fathered by a fallen angel. Angels are associated (often identified) with stars, so it follows that he would be called "a child of a star". Him meeting Chise brings light into her life and vice versa. His dual nature - commented on by Alice in Chapter 11 ("sometimes we were allies, and at other times enemies.") -, however, means that there is also considerable darkness in him. He is a curse (darkness) who is also a blessing (light) when it comes to Chise - an odd duality that’s also touched upon in the manga when Rahab remarks, “Curses and blessings are fundamentally the same thing. It all depends on how you receive them” (Chapter 16). Chise has been nothing but kind and accepting of Elias, which is beginning to transform him.

(2) The Nephilim came to be regarded as a curse, a pollution. Most of them perished in the Flood but some survived as disembodied "bastard spirits" that wander the Earth until Judgment Day.

Elias himself confesses to Chise that his nature is shadow and, as a result, he is not good at e.g. cleansing magic. He is repeatedly accused of being destructive and in Chapter 41 he actually takes the form of a dark black cloud. The Spriggan then reprimands him, saying that he defiles the land and pollutes the world when he loses control over himself like that. He also seems to hold Elias responsible for an event or events involving the disappearance of many spirits and humans (Chapter 8).

The fae remark that Elias has a stench. When Chise falls victim to the dragon's curse, she is also told by an aerial that she has a stink about her now (Chapter 39). If cruses smell bad to fae, then it's likely that Elias carries a curse, too. Bastard spirits are cursed to walk the Earth until the end of days. Walking is one of the three things Elias can (or lets himself to?) remember from his still unknown past. He is also associated with thorns. Thorns signify grief, suffering, tribulation, mockery, sin and the curse of/punishment for sin (cf. the crown of thorns).

(3) The Nemphilim's chief sin was unnatural, unrestrained appetite. They devoured humans, animals, then "one another’s flesh, and [drank] the blood."

We don't yet know what happened to Elias, but we know that when Lindel first encounters him and asks what he is, Elias only replies, "I’m hungry," then promptly collapses. Later he says the only thing he remembers before his long walk is "red". He also confesses to having eaten humans before and to still having that urge from time to time.

Rahab, Lindel's master, describes Elias as follows:

He's got the feeling of a spirit or a faerie all over him, but at the same time, there's definitely something human about him, too. If he was just a human who'd botched a dark spell, then things would be simple. But no. This is actually more like the opposite" (Chapter 16).

The opposite would be a curse that's botched being human. This matches what Renfred says about him earlier, that he is a "filthy abomination, unable to become fully human, unable to return to being a spirit" (Chapter 6), and also how Elias describes himself to Chise: "I'm incomplete, you see. I'm not human but I'm not faerie, nor a spirit" (Chapter 7).

Bastard spirits are cursed and can be considered curses themselves (see above about pollution & corruption). They are alternatively called "shades" and are associated with death. In Chapter 21, a dying Joel asks Elias if he is Death, to which he replies, "Something like that." (having a skull for a head is also a nice visual clue here). If Elias is a dark spirit looking to end his cursed, incorporeal wandering, it makes sense that he is trying to rebuild what he's lost: his humanity (which is also the likely key to salvation).

He's already attempted to do this by crafting a "a shell of flesh" for himself, but it is rather flimsy/unstable still and, as it turns out, not the way to become human. Chise already told him that his meticulously crafted full glamour looks fake, and most recently Elias himself realized that the change actually needed was never external. Unlike his "human facade", his internal development is genuine, and if the story doesn't stray from its Beauty and the Beast roots, then we will likely see true love break yet another curse.

Oberon comments on this "project" in Chapter 8:

"Your change is truly splendid to behold, Incomplete One. Once you only watched from the shadows, but now you have a human at your side. You're trying to leave the colourless path you've walked all this time. It is more amusing than you can imagine, watching you play at being part of a pair. But I must wonder, how long can you maintain this facade of warmth for just one person?"

Not exactly a vote of confidence from the King, but the Queen nails it when she refers to Chise as the Other Half of Elias - she is the one who triggered genuine development in him which helps him rebuild his lost humanity.

What both the Queen and King of Fae share is a sympathetic view of Elias. Titania has a pronounced dislike for the Church and its representatives - all those who consider the fruit of paradise evil. The fruit is knowledge, which the fathers of the Nephilim dispensed among humans (sorcery included, so the first magi would have been tutored by them too). It wasn't knowledge that corrupted humans but humankind used knowledge for evil. Oberon also points to human sin when Spriggan blames Elias for an event that claimed the lives of many spirits and humans. Was it a war? Was it the Flood perhaps? There is no way of knowing for sure yet, but Elias definitely has a vicious reputation among fae and human alike, which makes him an outcast walking alone in search of salvation, just as Rahab described:

"Gods and spirits dwell at your side. Though none may look kindly upon you, though you may know hurt, and sorrow, and loneliness, know that they are always there, watching over you. And with that knowledge in your heart, be at ease. Seek your own salvation."

This already sounds like a “penance walk” of sort which folds nicely into the thorn imagery mentioned above. Rahab urged Elias to endure this fate in relative peace and Lindel relaxed his ingrained reflex to kill without consideration: “Take what you need, but only as much as you need to survive. If you have to kill a living thing to eat it, make its death quick and painless” (Chapter 16). If these “taming measures” were necessary, then it’s unlikely that Elias led a tranquil life before.

(4) The Nephilim are referred to as "warriors of old" and at some point were reported to live in large fortified towns.

Elias is sometimes addressed as Pilum Murialis (the Spear Wall), which evokes similar images to those above - war and fortification. It also has a duality - spear=offense, wall=defense - that's inherent in Elias. There are brief mentions of "great wars of before" where many magi and wizards were killed and their wisdom and knowledge were lost with them, but it is still unclear what exact role Elias played in these events.

Last but not least, Titania remarking that Elias is "our kin in a way" is a small detail that's potentially relevant.
