Ok so that's where my phone died on me. I was so stressed out, I was so worried when Alison sliced off Reggie's face that she would fuck everything up, but like at the same time that's not how shows work?

At first I was like oh good, Alison got her happy ending, but after some discussion, it does feel sorta like... she won after being sorta awful all season. Like I understand her feelings, but I don't know why when she immediately arrived back from 1963 that she thought everything would be the same. Like you don't exist here!!

And then for Luther to go through all that, get his life back, and his wife is nowhere to be found? Come on, let spaceboy have his happiness for more than a week.

The fact that they all lost their powers is very interesting and leaves different avenues open to go down if/when season 4 happens.

Honestly I could write a whole fucking essay right now about Klaus this season. Like he just wanted to be reunited with Ben, but accepted he wasn't the same. Wanted to find his mom, she's dead. Befriended his father, got him back to his full mental capacity, only to be fucking betrayed by him, forcing him to kill himself to get to the after life and therefore back to life in Hotel Oblivion. And then he brought Luther back to save Sloane and let them say goodbye. Like fuck man. He tries his best, is trying to do what he thinks is right, and he just gets betrayed! And now he's not even immortal anymore!!! In conclusion, please be nice to my meow meow Klaus, my belovedest of TUA.

Updated TUA Timeline

A little over a year ago, Aidan posted a timeline for the events of the Umbrella Academy on his Instagram. I posted it on this blog at the time and promised I was going to update my TUA Timeline post with that info. Never did. But I am now! So, here it is. The updated TUA Timeline.

Also, there will obviously be spoilers, so don’t read this if you haven’t watched season 1.  

October 1st, 1989 - The Umbrella Academy kids are born.

1993 - Grace Joins the family. This is according to Aidan’s Timeline. Depending on the time of the year, the kids would be 3 or 4 when this happens. This may or may not be when the kids get names. 

1993/1994 - Vanya forgets about her powers. Vanya also trains with Reginald and is subsequently made to forget about her powers around this time. Though we don’t get a specific date or length of time that Vanya trains, the flashbacks don’t appear to show her training for a super long time. I think a good guess would be less than a year for this training, putting Vanya’s age at 4. (This also matches up with the casting for the young Vanya and young Allison roles, which I used previously to estimate this age/date)

1997/1998 - Klaus is locked in the mausoleum for the first time. I am basing this on the casting for the role of young Klaus, which has him at 8 years old.    However, it’s not quite that simple, because when Klaus is talking to his dad in episode 7, he says that his dad locked him in the mausoleum when he was 13. Complicating matters even further, there is a post somewhere out there that took a screen shot of Reginald’s journal with notes about locking Klaus in the mausoleum. (I have not been able to find that post again, so if anyone knows the one I’m talking about and has a link, I would love to put it in here). The date recorded on those notes is 2001. (I don’t remember the month, but I think it was summer) That would have made him 11 years old. It’s possible that this was just an inconsistency in the writing. Or it’s possible that Reginald locked Klaus in a mausoleum on at least 3 different occasions at age 8, 11, and 13. Possibly more. 

2001/2002 - The Umbrella Academy stops a Robbery  I’m basing this on the fact that all the same actors were used for these scenes as were used in the scene where Five leaves, so they can’t be much more than a year younger than that. 

November 10, 2002 - Five leaves the Academy  According to Pogo in episode 1, Five has been gone for 16 years, 4 months, and 14 days. The date in that episode is March 24th, 2019 (according to Vanya). That means that Five disappeared on November 10th, 2002, a little more than a month after the Umbrella Academy kids all turned 13. (This date is also confirmed on Aidan’s timeline)

(Side-note. Remember when Klaus mentions being locked in the mausoleum when he was 13? That means it probably happened not too long after Five disappeared. Holy Fuck Regi!)

2006(?) - Ben Dies OK, this is only a guess, BUT it’s a good one and if you scroll down to the additional notes at the bottom, you’ll see why. 

2014 - Vanya publishes her book In episode 3, we learn that Vanya wrote her book 5 years earlier. (when they were 24) At this point, Ben is already dead and Luthor has not had his accident yet.

2014/2015 - Luther has his accident We’re not sure how long it takes Regi to send Luther to the moon after his accident (days? weeks? months?) so all we really know is that the accident happens sometime between Vanya publishing her book and the moon trip.

2015 - Luther goes to the moon In episode 6, Luther says that he was on the moon for 4 years, making him about 25 years old when he left. Aidan’s timeline also confirms that Luther went to the moon in 2015. 

March 24th, 2019 - Reginald’s Funeral We know this because they tell Five the exact date. 

April 1st, 2019 - Apocalypse (Dear Commission: Worst April Fools joke ever). 

This Brings us to the present. The members of the Umbrella Academy are all 29, except for Five, who is 58, and Klaus, who spent 10 months in Vietnam and is therefore 30 now. 

Additional Notes on the Timeline: 

Five in the Future Five finds Delores pretty soon after the apocalypse (again, same actor, so I’m figuring a year leeway at most). He tells Klaus that he was with Delores for 30 years. That would make him about 43 when The Handler shows up. When Five gets back to the present, he gives a very specific amount of time he has been gone: 45 years. This means he spent 15 years working for the Comission, making him 58 at this point. Five also traveled through history extensively while working for the commission. His last mission had something to do with the Kennedy assassination, which would put him in 1963.  (Quick note on this one - Someone commented on this post a while back with a correction and I was going to go back and do more research so I could correct these numbers, but now I can’t find the post and it’s been so long that I can’t remember what the correction was. So, if these numbers look off, let me know and I will fix it)

1968 - Klaus travels back in time to the Vietnam War Historical Context: This is 3 years after the first American troops arrived in Vietnam and 5 years after Kennedy was assassinated. Nixon was elected in 1968. This was also the year of the Tet Offensive, a massive campaign by the North Vietnamese Army to push the US troops out of the country and ferment rebellion among the South Vietnamese people. This was the big turning point in the war and marked the beginning of the US troops’ defeat. This was also the year of the My Lai Massacre, where the US Army murdered more than 500 civilians in the city of My Lai. This incident was covered up for a year before the American press found out about it.  

Finally, the reasoning behind my guess that 2006 is the year Ben died: 

Klaus mentions that Ben died “young and tragic”

Everyone left the house after Ben died, according to Vanya.

In episode 3, Alison says that they left their mom alone for 13 years. (13 years ago, they would have been 16) We don’t know how quickly everyone left, if it took days, weeks, or even years, so it’s possible that 13 years ago was when Alison left specifically. It could be that everyone was gone by that date. Or it could be that this is when everyone started leaving. 

Diego mentions moving out at 17. Again, everyone left after Ben died, so it would have happened before that. 

Ben’s statue does not have a date on it, but obviously he would have had to be at least the same age as he is depicted there.

We also have the following portraits sequence in episode 1 that was used to show Five’s disappearance and Ben’s death. Here are all 4 portraits.

Portrait 1 is done when they are all 12 or 13 years old. Everyone looks about the same age in portrait 2, so I’m assuming it Reginald had it commissioned right after Five disappeared. It would therefore make sense that portrait 4 was done right after Ben died. There are clearly several years age difference between portraits 2 and 3. It also looks like there may be another year or so age difference between portraits 3 and 4. Because of this, I would argue that the children are at least 15 years old in the final portrait. Therefore, Ben dies at age 15 or 16.

Last bit of evidence is Aidan’s timeline. Now, the year for Ben’s death is blacked out, BUT we can see the general shape of the numbers. The first number is clearly a 2, so we know that it’s not just a bunch of 0′s as a place holder. The last two numbers are rounded at the top and the bottom. In the font they are using, that gives us these possible years: 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009. 

The placement between 2002 and 2015 is just a little past the middle point, so at first I figured that would mean the year was 2009. HOWEVER, that would mean he died at age 20. The other kids definitely don’t look 20 in the portrait after Ben dies and this doesn’t match up with the comments Allison and Diego make about leaving when they were still in their teens. Also, if you look at the timeline for earlier years, the same space between dates is used across the board, whether those dates are 4 years apart or 9 years apart. 

Conclusion: I think Ben died in early 2006 (making him 16).

**Warning my immediate feelings post Season 2. Spoilers for The Umbrella Academy**

Just finished The Umbrella Academy season 2. Dang, it was so good. It was so much fun. But god damn what the fuck was that ending. We're gonna meet Dark!Ben next season, wth. This is why you dont try and meet you're dad before you were born, you fuck up the timeline and then this shit happens. I'm glad the siblings learned their lesson though when Vanya left by herself and actually followed because Suprise! Treating people well usually keeps them from causeing the appocolype multiple times. And Harlan!! His powers. In so excited for that babe to show up as an old man. Sissy is probobly dead by 2019, but Harlan would be like 70. The last scene was so weird I'm not over it. I didnt hate it, I am just sooo confused. I'm ready though. God damn. 10/10. Really good! The cgi was a little weird in bits. Otherwise visually it was amazeing. The fight scenes were really good also. I loved the fight between the two fives. That whole scequence between the two is really fun. They had to send old five back to 2019 so that young five had a reason for existing, but then at the end 2019 is a diffrent reality, and thinking about the time paradoxes is makeing my brain hurt so I'm gonna stop. Those suitcases though. Theyre more delicate than a wet piece of tissue paper. I'm surprised there was even one functional in that field at the end. I would also like to complain about how they did Hazel dirty. I was ready for a fun Hazel and Agnes with their donut shop and maybe a few kids chillin in the 60's trying to stay out of this commission bull shit, but then they killed Agnes off screen and gave Hazel like 5 minutes. He didnt get to do anything and that makes me really sad. Speaking of sad, I'm happy to see Five experiencing some genuine human emotions. At first I thought it was kind of ooc for five to ask for Luther's help so quickly, but then I realized that all the others have had time to process everything in season one, while Five went immediately from seeing the moon explode to seeing a nuke get dropped. This kid has not had time to think about anything. I'm not suprised he's running a bit thin. Give Five a nap! Have we ever seen him voluntarily unconscious? No because he needs to get to actually sleep. And please give him some new cloths. Like dude, I think its time you gave your umbrella academy duds the time out and wore human cloths. Like that shirt miraculously got clean after mudering a dozen people. Idk about y'all, but blood is so hard to get out of white. Maybe I missed something because usually the show is really good on continuity and keeping physical changes as they go throughout the season. One thing I will say though is Five should ve deaf this season. He had a tank go off in his left ear. That isnt good for your hearing ever. It was so good, this season. I loved it So much. I called the Lila powers thing. I'm happy with myself about that. After her fight with Five and learning her parents died in 93 when she was 4. It wasn't a supper hard mystery, but I usually miss these things. I thought her powers were illusion, but I like her actual powers way better! They are so cool! Lila is a cool character, though I'm not a hundred percent sold on her. Or her and Diego. Like dude, your girlfriend died I think 3 months ago for you, falling in love with Lila is a little quick but okay. To each their own. I'm sad Allison couldnt be with Ray, I understand everything he was saying, but he was so good to her. I get why sje fell in love with him. Shit, if the Umbrella Academy didnt exist in the new timeline, does that mean Claire was never born! That is so sad for Alison. This is way longer than I meant it to be. I have so many feelings about the season! It was so good!

My top 5 Favorites Series

#1 Modern Family 

This is series is about 3 families named the Dunphy’s, Tucker and Prichet. This series is my all time favorite due to its relatable and funny humor. In my opinion the actors in Modern family are perfect for each role and i could not think of better actors. I think that the making of season 11 was a little bit rushed due to COVID 19 but i hope the producers at least make a spin off show of like Haley, Dylan and there twin babys

#2 I Am Not Okay With This

This show is about a girl name Sydney still reeling about her fathers suicide.   There’s her family’s sudden relocation to a small town. This show is about Sydney’s finding out she has superpowers and trying to cope with her fathers suicide. I think Sydney’s power could really be controlled but the fear of hurting or killing is whats keeping her during one episode where Stanley tries to help Sydney controls her power Stanley found out that it can only be turned on by anger that Sydney has i hope next season Sydney learns more about her powers.

#3 Umbrella Academy

This show is about a dysfunctional family of adopted sibling superheroes who reunited after their fathers death and a apocalypse following them. The apocalypse wouldn’t even happen if Reginald was not afraid that Vanya would start an apocalypse due to her strong powers and her siblings treated her right even when they thought that she didn’t have powers During season 2 i felt like Luther was exaggerating that he had the worst when they time traveled during the 1900′s when Alison was black and Diegos need to be a superhero and save JFK like whats the sudden interest on JFK? but overall this is my favorite series in the superhero genre

#4 Control Z

This show is about when a hacker begins to release information about the students secrets to the entire high school the socially isolated but observant Sofia works to uncover the hacker. In my opinion Sofia really could just found out the hacker if she stop suspecting her friend Javier and actually suspect Raul why wouldn’t she suspect him after bullying her . This show is really good if you like the genres Teen, Drama, and Thriller series. 

#5 Victorious

When i was a kid i loved this show and watched it regularly now that i have time i started to binge watch victorious i realized this show was a little bit boring and hard to watch due to the jokes that didn’t make sense and some really boring scenes but the songs in this shows really made up the fact that some scenes have dull moments and to be honest i wouldn’t rate this show the lowest but due to this shows abrupt ending the viewers never saw a good last episode.

Thoughts on Umbrella Academy season 1

Endgame Spoilers below. you’re a moron if you click this readmore before learning about the show

1. Luther, the leader, is such a colossal idiot that he threw away every possibility to resolve the plot without ending the world just because he wants to bang his sister and didn’t want her to make her own decisions.  

2. Luther is also a coward who thinks ending one life to save the world is terrible, but also thinks that giving Vanya a chance is a bad idea because it could put people at risk, even though he as a result ends up throwing away an easy resolution, causing her to go full shitstorm not once but three times. 

3. The fact Alison accepts this and doesnt find a way to dispatch of him is kind of bullshit. Looking at the comic history Alison is more fleshed out and better utilized in-story, even if she’s gotten a massive nerf to her ability that was reality-altering in the original. But I want to hear her speak for herself, or even learn some goddamn sign language, not have to be attached to Luther who sucks.            

4. I wasn’t a big fan of Vanya really, not until she went full supervillain at the final episode. She was sympathetic yes, but highly emo, and highly incapable of making her own decisions, being led on by the evil boyfriend and abandoning her dying sister for death because thats what he said to do, despite obviously not wanting to do so. After that she still thought he was a good guy. Vanya’s tragedy was so blatant and pasted on that it stopped her from developing a personality outside of the terrible shit that happens to her, and the sociopathic things she ends up doing as a child, then an adult. Ellen Page as always is a wonderful actress but the character doesn’t fit what Ellen does best, which is... acting as a fleshed out, goofy person. Since every other character in this series manages to be stellar,  it stands out.      

4.2. Why was child Vanya so evil jesus christ how many old ladies did she kill for that dark comedy scene  

5. My favourite characters were Five and Klaus/the Seance. I liked that Five was fun, clever, the biggest plot-mover of the series, and had what I deem to be the most useful power. His teen actor did a fantastic job.  Klaus meanwhile has the most colourful personality of the cast and actually feels like he’s developed significantly from his appearance at the start of the show. He’s able to speak to his dead brother Ben, has the most interactions with the most characters, is a veteran from a war he TIME TRAVELLED to, and has a dead vietnamese soldier boyfriend.   

6. I wonder if Dave is going to get retconned... I think he’s a Netflix series exclusive character? If they’re going back in time and they replace their own bodies, will that retcon when Klaus met Dave?     

7. The final scene.. jesus CHRIST that was so good. The entire final episode was 10/10 from visuals to tension to emotional impact. WAY, WAY BETTER than how Gerard Way’s comic handled the Apocalypse Suit.  

It’s fitting how they’re going to go back in time and undo the damage that Reginald did to themselves. They’re going to go together and fix their past, their messy childhood.
