This is a very good ask I don’t think I’ve ever actually told anyone why I like Yunobo so much

Preemptive spoiler alert for both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom by the way

(Also this turned into a bit of a character analysis on Yunobo I’m so sorry it’s so ridiculously long lmao)

Personally my favorite Zelda “race” or whatever has always been gorons, huge fellas who mine rocks and eat rocks and are rocks, just big ol walking boulders with kind souls, I think they’re very silly and cute. But I really like Yunobo because he’s not really like any of the other gorons (He’s not like other girls!!), because he’s so much more… emotional? I guess? In each of the Goron race’s appearances throughout the Zelda games they’re portrayed pretty much the same way, either tough and brave and heroic (Like Darunia, Daruk and Darmani), or chill and generally nonchalant (Like… pretty much every other goron). Though they are kind and playful, they’re also tough and unmoving as stone. Yunobo (on a surface level), is neither of these things. When you first meet him in BotW he runs and yelps in fear, and a great portion of the fan base calls him a coward because of this. He’s very unsure of himself, and unsure of a lot of things in general. In the artbook “Creating a Champion”, his description is as follows:

“Yunobo is the grandchild of the Champion Daruk. He has an adult body but still has some growing up to do. He is easily frightened by monsters and isn't exactly what one might call brave, but, driven by thoughts of protecting his people, he gathers enough courage to aid Link in quelling the Divine Beast Vah Rudania. He is earnest and naive, readily believing nearly anything anyone tells him.”

So yeah. He’s a scaredy-cat. He’s a pushover. He’s incredibly naive and a bit childish.

AND YET.

He helped save his people, and the entirety of Hyrule… TWICE. Because he is brave. Bravery is not an immediate heroic desire to face any danger for the sake of the greater good.

It is action in spite of fear.

He is afraid. He’s unsure, and he’s flighty, and he’s defensive. But he swallows these fears and chooses to act in spite of them, helping link to take back control of Vah Rudania, and saving his people. For me, seeing the journey Yunobo takes to find his courage is a lot more satisfying than if he were just already a brave go-getter from the moment you meet him.

And then things get even more interesting in the second game (again, spoilers for TotK ahead).

After he helps Link take back Vah Rudania and Calamity Ganon is defeated, Yunobo goes right to helping his people recover from the the post-calamity craziness. He’s incredibly devoted to them. He’s a helper through and through, willing to do anything it takes for the sake of others. His loyalty knows absolutely no bounds. But unfortunately, this can get the better of him.

Like when his good friend “Zelda” shows up and gives him some weird mask and tells him to put it on.

Honestly, when I saw Yunobo for the first time in TotK, I was one of the many people who was terrified that Nintendo might have made him an asshole for no reason. I mean, they gave Sidon a wife so people would stop shipping him with Link, I wouldn’t put it past them (totally backfired though lol, now they’re just a polycule).

But instead they had actually put him into one of my favorite character tropes: self-conscious but good-natured character easily susceptible to corruption (See: Luigi [SPM], Bolin [TLoK], Locksley [AS:TNC] -they’re all also green for some reason? Crazy). I really like this particular trope because it shows the very real (and frankly scary) way that those with the best intentions can most easily be led astray. As someone who’s kinda struggled with having a people-pleaser personality (incredibly susceptible to peer-pressure, neglecting my own needs over the needs of others, not able to set boundaries, etc), this trope is a relatable cautionary tale for me. Those who just want to help more often than not end up helping those with bad intentions without realizing.

Buuuuut I won’t go too far into all that (it’ll get sad fast eugh)

My main point is that Yunobo is brave, kind, and loyal (even to a fault), and for me that’s a wonderful formula for a character as nervous and dopey as him. Yeah he’s got rocks for brains, but he’s got a heart as big as a lynel’s. I don’t throw this term around liberally but I would say he could definitely count as a himbo.

Ugggghhh this is getting too long ffs. I’ll just list a couple more reasons why he’s important to me specifically.

He is… very large. Ahem. I like big fellas. You know how it is. ANYWAY

He’s a bit dopey but he’s definitely not incompetent. He’s the president of a highly successful mining company and he’s helped save Goron City (and the entirety of Hyrule) TWICE. That’s pretty cool. I’ve seen a lot of people shit on him in the first game for “always getting spotted by the drones” but like. Dude that’s your fault. He told you he would come when called and stop when told to, it’s on you if he walks into a searchlight.

He’s got very intriguing lore (to me at least), that leaves a lot of room for speculation. Like, he’s the “grandson” of Daruk, but how does that work?? Gorons are born from the mountain itself, they don’t give birth. There’s a pair of Gorons in TotK that call themselves “brothers” (still a bit confusing since most gorons throughout the series call each other brother anyway), but they explain it was because they were born in the same cave at the same time, so they’re like family. Does this mean Yunobo was just born in the same cave Daruk was, and therefore inherited his “genes” and his magical abilities? Maybe! Maybe it’s a really cool special cave, right at the summit or something, where his whole lineage was born all the way back to the first sage of fire. Cool stuff to think about!

He’s not the leader of his people, in either game. That job belongs to Bludo. In the second game he’s definitely got a lot more influence and does occupy a position of leadership, but he’s not the chief. He’s just some Goron. The role of aiding link in both games is thrust onto him entirely because of his lineage. But he takes responsibility for it. He understands the power he holds, both as a champion’s descendant and as the Sage of Fire, and he steps up to the role. He feels a responsibility to his people and his city, even despite not being its official leader like the other champion’s descendants. That’s pretty cool.

He’s very sweet! I’ve talked about how kind and caring he is already but there’s a difference between doing it with a stoic sense of heroism or duty, and doing it with a big dopey grin and a genuine care for those he cares about. He’s often unsure and self-conscious, and yet he’s surprisingly optimistic about most things a lot of the time. He has a big smile (most gorons do), but he has an absolutely heart-melting laugh. I often tear up during the cutscene in which he sees the spirit of Daruk reclaiming Vah Rudania, him laughing and waving with such genuine joy and excitement, aghhhh it’s too much. Joe Hernandez certainly did a great job putting authenticity into Yunobo’s (and Daruk’s) emotions, this cutscene especially.

He has the best secret stone ability (gameplay wise). You cannot change my mind. Tulin is great for mobility and the other two are fine for tactical combat stuff, but none of them even come close to the versatility and power of Yunobo. Don’t have any good rock-breaking weapons and don’t want to use up bombs or zonai devices? Yunobo! Using a control stick-operated machine and can’t pull out your bow to snipe that pesky aerocuda? Yunobo! Wanna separate a big group of enemies from each other without wasting bombs? Yunobo! And don’t even get me started on the fact that when he’s on a vehicle, he’s got zero cooldown. You can hop on a hoverboard and decimate a molduga just by dribbling Yunobo on its head like a basketball.

All this being said I certainly think Yunobo is too often overlooked by fans for “being a coward”, or just… being a Goron? Gorons in general have often been a bit neglected in favor of the other more serious, conventionally attractive and *cough* slimmer *cough* Zelda races. It’s a bit disheartening seeing the amount of fan artists who don’t even have a clue how to approach drawing Yunobo or Daruk, simply because they don’t know how to draw bulky, fat or muscled characters. But I won’t preach too much on the subject, haha.

Long story short, I love Yunobo a whole lot and I’d love to give him a big hug and a smooch. That’s about it :))))

For Futa Jackalope really did just turn to camera and say chicken says what. Like he called the audience cowards. Too afraid to judge Futa because it would mean judging themselves.

Jackalope was on it. This end of trial report he hit all the right notes- He was in all the right places. He saw the audiences weaknesses and he hit them over and over.

He said you had your fun sowing lets chat before the reaping starts and he went in.

Like damn no remorse.

"Or……maybe you just couldn’t bring yourself to find him “guilty”, because he reminded you too much of yourself……I’m just blabbing."

Even down to highlighting the faceless Futa showing that he could easily be any of us as he said it. Jackalope said,

"I take no prisoners; you will see an ending before the end. It will be shaped like every door you did not open and every life you did not live. Then in the face of your doubts you will keep walking forward because where you came from no longer exists. Time has an insatiable appetite and we are all on it's menu. Hahaha I'm such a kidder."

Back to what he really said and the thing that intrigues me the most. Jackalope throughout the second trial report kept highlighting that despite finding Kotoko guilty we proved through our verdict that her actions do work.

By finding everyone who she attacked/threatened Innocent. This continues the trend of Kotoko jumping on any sign of agreement to get to the conclusion she wants to end up at. That being her methods are correct. So just because we found her guilty doesn't necessarily mean we found her methods wrong.

The way Jackalope interprets the guilty prisoners change in verdict may be exactly how Kotoko will view it herself.

"But, to put it another way, if this is because he showed remorse, you could also say his “innocent” verdict was thanks to the actions of Kotoko Yuzuriha, right?"

Cuz think about it…….who knows how he would have acted without the pain, right?

He’s a self-admitted liar, have you been able to solve the mystery?

Well given the little amount of information provided in contrast to Jackalope's statement on Yuno... I would have to say we haven't. Instead Jackalope just reiterates things that Es brought to attention in Kazui's second voice drama.

Not mentioning anything about cheating or marriage in the slightest.

Again very interesting in comparison to Yuno who Jackalope admits told us what she did herself without ever really honing in on what part of what she told us should be considered.

Just stating,

"She said it herself, so her crime became quite clear, hasn’t it? And that crime didn’t raise to the level of murder to you, I take it. Interesting. I guess that’s how it is in your era."

Yet in Yuno's second trial interrogation she said a lot of things. Including dismissing the audience previous judgments on her and the guards desire to project a sob story onto her.

This situations bothersome-ness has won out./I won't be bothered.

"So, I am extremely cooled off." (-273.15°C) "That is all."

"That’s the real Yuno Kashiki, you could say. Cold and logical. Practical and unromantic. Getting her to interact is gonna be a heavy lift, I’d say."

"You want to make clear the truth...huh? Fu... Haha!"

"The result of doing looots of sugar-daddying: ...abortion."

"That's probably my murder. Well, please go ahead and partake of the truth."

"How is it? Satisfied? Then, can we be done already?"

Yuno...you...

"You don't surprise much, do you? As I thought, you knew it from the song extraction."

Cold and Logical

Well, yes. As one possibility, I thought it was likely. That, going by Milgram's scope of interpretation for murder, it was possible.

"I'm sure. Well, I generally got the sense that that's how it was. I could feel it."

You could feel it...you say?

"I can hear it, while I'm in Milgram. It's probably the same for everyone else."

Practical and unromantic.

"Voices peeking in, digging around, and discussing my sins."

Interesting that she uses sins plural here not singular. Didn't note this previously but probably should have.

Something like that...

"Are those not the thoughts you were having? Not that I would know."

But you get my point Jackalope's end of trial report on Yuno confirms that what she said in her second interrogation was in fact the truth and nothing but it. However, he speaks very little on how we interpreted what we were told in contrast to other prisoners.

Just making a sweeping statement,

Interesting. I guess that’s how it is in your era.

But he does ponder an interesting thing,

"I wonder though, what decides the worth of a life?"

Playing on the abortion debate that her trial turned into before plainly asking,

"……don’t tell me, did this murder seem smaller to you than the murders of the other prisoners? Thought-provoking!"

Again playing on the idea the fans have ran with that Yuno should not even be here because she hasn't committed murder like the other prisoners. He says a lot and not that much while discussing Yuno but Jackalope's statements on her can be used to further scrutinize what's not said about Kazui.

Like I said he basically confirms Yuno was in fact telling the truth throughout her second voice drama but doesn't mention any of what was brought up in Kazui's outside of reiterating Es' points.

Of Kazui being a liar and self-pitying going as far as to call him emo and even praise us for being so accommodating to him despite his woe is me routine.

Jackalope even comments that he can't bring himself to be interested in Kazui,

"It all feels very emo and I can’t bring myself to be very interested in him, but the fact that you’re so accommodating to him, is commendable."

However, he reiterates another point one that he brought up from the beginning that directly contradicts a statement that Kazui made in his second voice drama,

"He’s the only one who has the strength to fight off Kotoko and Mikoto after all."

Kazui states in his second voice drama that if Kotoko and Mikoto were to team up that would be the end of him and Milgram. Contradicting Jackalope's statement in Es' voice drama that if Milgram were an all out brawl then Kazui would come out victorious.

So Jackalope basically goes he's still lying have you figured out what the lies are and then just goes here's one of them for free.

Now onto the other interesting one- Amane.

Amane's is interesting because Jackalope basically goes her life would be this way in and out of Milgram. Showing that his focus with Amane is not us being tricked into going easier on her because she's a child but a desire for the audience to go harder on her because she is a child.

Coddling isn't going to prepare her for the real world but neither is being unnecessarily cruel to her either. Even admitting that he himself doesn't know what made the audience find Amane innocent this time around and stating he's curious about the judgement.

Despite how vocal people said Amane fans were being- This again highlights that no, they weren't. Amane fans weren't pushing super hard or really loud. They weren't going around shouting at people to vote her innocent or bribing people to. Hell, the staff couldn't even write a decent bit for her part of the video because they don't know what caused this.

"I remember feeling a sort of awe at your resoluteness to your duties, being a kid didn’t mean you couldn’t be “guilty”, right? So, what was it that made you choose “innocent” this time? I’m very curious. Is it her, or her beliefs, or her birthright, or her fate…."

Whatever the circumstances may be, she is the one that has to bear the blame. That’s just how it is. Both in and out of MILGRAM, isn’t that right?

They were wrong for highlighting the tasing scene like this again. They went I'm about to make you feel bad if you voted this kid guilty fucking suffer rip to you I guess- you are the problem. Like there was no joking here Jackalope looked at the camera and went,

Jackalope: This is just how it is everywhere. Your vote won't change that. It won't lessen the weight of the blame on her shoulders. In or outside of Milgram.

The “It can’t be helped”, from the scum that can’t be helped. That makes them doubtlessly, clearly, absolutely, unequivocally, beyond any doubt, categorically, emphatically, GUILTY.

Then just went to Mikoto like that shit was nothing like it didn't just destroy my soul.

It's dark outside by the time practice ends. I feel gross with how sweaty I am and musty the air is in the gym, I need to get out quick. I thank the coach and my captain and quickly leave for the locker room. I sent a quick text to Yuno that i'm gonna be like in 15 minutes. I try to be as quick as possible because we are having a dinner date at a local place in a bit and I don’t wanna be late. After my shower I send another text to Yuno that I'm done and he can meet me outside.

I walk out of the locker room and through the front door to the outside, this is nice. I feel my body temperature cooling down and I can finally somewhat relax. I wait a couple of minutes before I hear yuno calling my name, “Tsuki i'm over here!” I look around for a second to see where he was and I see him at the entrance of the parking lot. I walk over there as quickly as possible. When I walk over to him I pull him in by the waist with one arm and kiss the top of his head, “Wow Tsuki, didn’t realize you missed me so much” Yuno says with a smirk “Oh shut it” I reply back with a small smile “Now lets go”.

💌 - How would they react to a love letter?

Well…he would have to have it translated first (if it’s a love letter from Kai), but if it’s from Josslyn then it’ll be fine 😆!

He’d be confused at first, since he’s never gotten a love letter before. But then he would feel his heart flutter as he read the words on the page, he would probably be a blushing mess and would probably bury his face in his pillow/arms and would gush about how cute they are.

But he would have issues believing the words on the paper though, and would probably need to hear it again in person. Just because he needs that reassurance! And it doesn’t hurt to hear those words in person 😌.

🌼 - Assign them an aesthetic

Hmm…I feel like he is some kind of “Bad boy” or maybe some kind of rock-ish/cool guy aesthetic 🤔. He has a lot of earrings, wears a lot of dark colors, and tries to always look his best no matter what. So maybe an aesthethic like that 😅?

🌹 - Do they have a signature scent? Perfume, shampoo or alike?

Hmm I feel like his signature scent is something warm; like cinnamon, fall spice, nutmeg, y’know? Basically any kind of warm and fall/autumn fragrence you can think of is how I imagine Ezio smelling 😆!

🎶 - How do they sound? Describe their voice

Neva’s VA is Sayori Hayami: Her voice is closer to her performance as Yukino Yukinoshita. She’s surprisingly soft spoken and quiet, but she isn’t afraid to raise her voice and get loud if she needs too.

👗-Describe their style

She has a very casual style, but it isn’t messy. She’s more “tomboy-ish” as she prefers pants, jeans, etc; to skirts and dresses. But once she starts dating Yuno her style changes a bit. It becomes a bit more mature, and a bit more “girly”. She starts wearing dresses and skirts, begins to put makeup on. Mostly because she wants to look nice and pretty for him, but also because it makes her feel good!

🎁 - Are they good at giving gifts? How about receiving them?

She’s…*okay* at giving gifts 😅. It’s mainly because she overthinks and worries about what to get her friends, because she wants them to actually like it, instead of them accepting it “just to be nice”. So because of that she can be indecisive and overthinks it before finally settling on something.

As far as her receiving gifts she gets very flustered about it (almost comically so) and then grows awkward before eventually accepting it, for the longest time she was only used to William buying her gifts, so getting gifts from others would be surprising for her.

🥘 - Favourite food?

Hmm…I think Caprese Panini is one of his favorite meals, it’s simple, delicious, and he can eat it quickly if he has too! It’s also easy and simple for him to make whether its for lunch or dinner. But after he goes to Hino and tries their dishes I can see his second favorite dish being Onigiri or Yakimeshi because of it being simple, quick, and filling!

😊 - Something that always makes them smile

Hikari. I’m kidding (partially)! While Hikari does always make him smile, I also think reading his mothers language of flowers makes him smile as well! Its like he’s able to talk to her in some way, or get some insight into what she was thinking at the time she was writing it. He loves seeing the little notes she makes like “This is Williams favorite flower!” or “X doesn’t like this flower, they say it smells like farts!”. It’s a way for him to personally connect with her, and seeing the bits of her personality never fails to make him smile!

🍁 - Their favourite season and why?

Alistar’s favorite season would probably be spring! He likes seeing the flowers come up from underneath the snow and ice, and he likes seeing the tree’s bloom and the animals coming back (except the birds. If he had it his way those devils would stay gone 😆!) but he just really loves Spring!

LITERALLY JUST THISCHJSJKSKSKD he's everywhere. every single time there's an anime guy with fluffy brown hair and brown eyes you just KNOW someone in the comments is gonna be like "omg he looks like dazai" no he doesn't.

also.. idk i just got tired of him. i did think he's funny when i first got into bsd (i was 13-14 so you didn't have to do much for me to think you're funny) but now everything about his behavior is so. ugh. it's like okay!! you're a walking red flag!! not in a fun way!!

i still think he's a well-written character though. just not my type.

makima: i can just say that i'm into dominant women honestly her design is so cool!! i have her plushie right next to me rn. she's staring into my soul. she's a really cool and well-written character and i don't know, there's just something about her that still makes you (me.) trust her even though you know she's the villain here. also i really love characters who do horrible, horrible things but they believe that there is no other way and they believe they're doing the right thing. something about her is also weirdly comforting to me but we're not gonna unpack that right now that moment in the manga when she said that denji can just rely on her and he doesn't have to do anything. that felt personal to me. also the fact that in the end she just needed a hug and needed someone to love her.. idk, it's probably cheesy, but i found it heartbreaking.

reo: HE'S JUST LIKE ME FR!!! it's pretty much impossible for me to talk about reo without oversharing stuff so i'm just gonna say that. well. i know what it's like to be a sheltered kid who doesn't even know what they want from life but when they finally start to realize what they probably want, they get hit with that "nah don't do that" and also his relationship with nagi is so... HHHHHHH been there. done that. know what it's like. i was literally going "BABY NO. NO DON'T DO THAT IT'S ONLY GONNA HURT YOU MORE" even though i do like this ship djdksks. anyway yeah his character is very realistic, it was so painful for me to read the part where nagi was like "nvm i need you actually" and he said that exactly when reo started to move on...

bachira: i actually didn't like him that much at first because i'm usually not a fan of characters who.. like. have this "weird and goofy" kind of personality, i just find them kinda exhausting, but bachira's character actually turned out to be much deeper than i expected and i find him very relatable as well. also most of the time he felt like the most normal character to me HSJSJKAKDK

yuno: SHE IS SO. *falls on the floor and starts sobbing* i'm not usually a fan of characters who are like.. very fun and cheerful on the outside, but they're actually suffering (and i have. so many ocs like that. ironic, isn't it) because most of the time it's either written kinda poorly, doesn't feel relatable, or the fandom just boils their character down to that one trait, but yuno's character felt very refreshing to me, because her t1 personality already felt kinda fake and even es mentioned that she doesn't have to pretend around them and when yuno really does stop pretending, like. it's so cool because at the same time she changed a lot, but you know that she actually hasn't changed at all and she's always been like that. there always were signs that yuno is actually colder (haha get it) than she acts so it isn't surprising for her to act this way in t2 and it doesn't feel too drastic. also her wanting to be seen as an adult and wanting people to stop coming up with sympathetic motives for her is so.. it's so good.

kirari: hmmm i actually don't really have a strong opinion about her! she's cool! but i like her design a lot! her hairstyle, her eyes, her iconic lipstick, she's so pretty!

yumeko: YUMEKO JABAMI THE WOMAN THAT YOU AREEEEE... the crush i had on this girl when i was younger was so. shsdjasksksk. i know i just said i don't really like "weird" characters but yumeko is so unhinged, it's so fun to watch! i really like kakegurui exactly because of how it just. lets women do wild things and be in the center of attention and all. i like how at the same time it's hinted that her character is much deeper than it seems, but also she just REALLY likes gambling!

"Favorite canon thing about this character?"

Can you tell I am running out of unique ways to start these Anywho, next up on my list that I totally have issss Shidou! I myself don't actually have a lot of thoughts on him other than that his first MV makes my flower symbolism brain go insane, but he's still on the list !

The Sun… the blinding light… speaks to me… I listen for the song of the stars… and I hear a voice… urging me to talk about Mr funny doctor man!

Shidou is cool, though he might be the most… “Just Kinda There” Milgram character in my eyes. I have to admit I’ve probably thought the least about him compared to other characters, and I can’t really tell you why. He’s got a pretty interesting story all things considered, so I’m not sure what about him makes me so indifferent to him. At least he heals the other prisoners which is very swag of him.

CW: Murder, organ harvesting, human experimentation.

I have to admit I’m not really sure what the theorizing landscape looks like around him, which is part of why I haven’t thought of him much. Like we know he probably harvested organs to save either his children, his wife or all of the above, as well as for “scientific purposes” that he mentioned inhis 2nd VD (I am really intrigued by what the hell that means, but I’m not sure where to even start theorizing about that). But I think it was pretty much confirmed in Aesculapius he took the organs from countless braindead patients. Not great, obviously, it’s a pretty fucked up thing to do, but considering the other shit we’ve forgiven…

The big thing about him is how much he regrets what he's done, what with him wanting not to be forgiven and all that. But then finding new purpose in helping the other patients, etc. It's a cool character arc, and it's nice and wholesome, but it's a bit too straightforward for my tastes, you know? I think the most interesting thing about it is how it brings out Es' thoughts about life etc to light, but that's more on Es being one of my faves than Shidou in my view.

I guess the interesting dilemma about him is how much worse does the number of people killed make it, since he probably has the highest kill count by far. Like most people here have killed one or a few, Yuno likely hasn't killed anyone, and then this fucker may have a kill count in the dozens judging by the graves at the start of Triage. But even then, his regret really makes him quite sympathetic in comparison to the other prisoners.

That said, I do think Trial 3 might be able to make him a lot more interesting, because his Voice Reveal glitchy line is very very intriguing.

Shidou: [Cackling] Not dead... Yeah, she's definitely not dead... I finally understand the value of what I've been robbing people of...

Does that imply his wife ended up braindead after he took a bunch of people's organs? And that's when he understood why some families where so reluctant to give up their own family members? Is that when he stopped experimenting on people or something like that? It's all very odd.

Anyways, yeah, I feel you in the flower symbolism. One day I'm going to go down that rabbit hole and I will perish. For now I am not willing to go that insane (I say, as if I have any amount of sanity left).

One thing I do love is his dynamic with Amane. My guy consistently gets threatened by a twelve year old half his height, and he just doesn't know how to deal with it. I think it will be very funny if he gets stabbed by her, though I very much doubt he or anyone else will die due to it. I think it was implied in some timelines posts that Yuno could potentially take over if Amane... I don't know, cuts his hands off or something? Ah, we'll be fine. Inno Amane, cuz it's not like we know for sure that she won't be able to harm him even while guiltied.

It's a good thing he's familiar with sharp tools with how much he needs to watch that edge.

S: Kayano-kun has ended up like that, and I became unable to smoke as well too. I feel lonely that the smoking group as disbanded.

Sad news for the smoking group enjoyers. I hope they make up in Trial 3 or even post Milgram depending on what happens at the end, I like their dynamic.

S: Yes I can. But I don't really want to do it anymore.

well, first is the obvious !! prisoner number nine, mikoto .. his whole character just. sucks. for reasons that have already been said many times, and i dont think i could bring anything new or meaningful to that table. but. his character is just harmful n sucks !! n, ofc, i dont have did but its clear it sucks . begone, prisoner number nine

other than that,, all the other icky things about it could be like . explained that theyre that way to keep the audience on their toes or something like that. like, they could all be explained with symbolism - like prisoner number two, yuno's murder(s) being abortions. which, theyre heavily considered murders by lots of people, so its like. could just be the. the. man my heads empty rn. but, milgram has a lot of 'your comments affect the characters a lot your words can affect them' stuff, yea? so, it could just be that because its considered murders . like, sure, its a bit icky, but it cn be explained with symbolism. i do think yuno is cool tho i like her:3 has bg vibes sorry to say. and, also, mahiru and kazui consider their 'murders' murders, even tho i'd dare to argue neither of them actually killed anyone. mahiru was in a codependent relationship and just couldnt save her bf. thats nothing to blame her for.

Chapter 6

Synopsis: Julia follows the young Spade princess into the night, and gets into trouble

Four Hours Earlier

It was on nights like these that Julia wished she had inherited her mother’s flame magic. Her own flame was far from hot; it burned with an icy cold frost, a burst of cool purple before a black void appeared. No warmth existed in that place.

“Brrr…. Cold, cold, so cold…”

Julia paced around the palace gardens, rubbing her arms vigorously to generate any kind of warmth. Inside the Spade palace, laughter and music could be heard; warmth. However, for whatever reason, Julia had found herself unable to enjoy it.

Why am I even here?

She sighed, pacing around in a circle, past the frost-bitten roses.

This trip had been a great experience, sure. Emperor Yuno and Queen Fleur had been amazing hosts, and Julia had learned a lot about how their neighboring kingdom worked. However, something about the whole place gave her an unsettling feeling.

This is where that battle happened, right? Over 20 years ago.

It wasn't hard to imagine the cold stone walls of the castle crackling and creaking with magical power as a battle raged inside. The whole fiasco was barely talked about now, but Julia, curious, had asked her mother about it a few years back. She told her about the devils, about the gate to the underworld… and about the Zogratis siblings.

Julia could keenly remember where that conversation led.

"There… was a fourth one. A fourth Zogratis. He was the one who planned everything, every last detail. With his time magic, he was able to see the future. It's a miracle that we managed to defeat him."

Her mother didn't like to talk about it, either. Later, Julia learned that Lisa had been kidnapped by that man, earning his trust until it was time to betray him. But, something about that story never seemed quite right.

"Mom… Dad used to have time magic too, didn't he?"

"... he did."

That was all Lisa would say on the matter. When Julia was older, she learned the rest of the story from someone else.

"Lucius Zogratis took over your father's body. That's how he was able to trick us."

She had learned about that when she was 15. She was 18 now, and the thought still made her queasy. She mentioned it to her parents once when they were alone, and the sad look between the two of them told her everything she needed to know.

They never wanted me to find out about this. How… hurt they both were. Not just dad, but mom…

Julia was suddenly jerked from her thoughts by the sound of crunching footsteps in the snow. Startled, she looked up just in time to see a tiny figure dash across the garden and into the hedge maze.

Huh? What was that?!

Worried and intrigued, Julia took off after the shadow, glad to move around to ward off the cold. She followed the footsteps by their sound, until she turned a corner and caught up.

"Hey! What are you doing out here? Are you-"

Julia froze up when the figure suddenly stopped and turned to look at her with wide amber eyes.

"P-Princess Aurele?! What are you doing out here by yourself?!"

The tiny kid was much younger than either of Julia's youngest siblings, yet didn't seem too bothered by the cold. Maybe that was because of her thick little coat, or maybe because she had lived here all her life. However, Aurele shook her head, her black hair fluffy and dusted with snowflakes.

"No! I'm not going back!" she said before Julia could suggest such a thing. Determined, she turned around, and pointed ahead. "Bell flew away! I have to catch her!"

Bell? Julia thought, wondering if that could be a pet bird, or possibly an insect. Either way, it wouldn't fare very well in the cold snow. However, she wasn't about to let Emperor Yuno's only daughter run away into the cold night. "Er- princess," Julia said awkwardly, putting on a smile and bending down to look at her more directly. "I'm sure Bell will come back, but you need to get somewhere nice and warm!" And so do I. "We should head back before-"

"No!" Aurele demanded, before turning around and sprinting off once again. 

"WAH! Come back!"

Without a second thought, Julia sprinted after her again, determined to bring her back to the castle safely.

Aurele was surprisingly fast for a child who couldn't be more than 5 years old, but Julia eventually caught up, jogging behind her and desperately trying to convince her to turn back. However, nothing worked. Eventually, they slipped out of the grounds through a gap in the gate, a secret entrance that Julia hadn't seen before. "We really shouldn't be leaving!!" she told Aurele, wondering at this point if it would be permissible to just grab the girl and run back to the castle. "Please, Aurele-"

They were in the city now. Darkness cloaked them as Aurele navigated around corners, across empty streets, through alleyways-

And then, suddenly, she screeched to a halt. Julia nearly tripped over her, but managed to skid to a stop in time. "What is it?" she whispered, peering up ahead. Slowly, Aurele, who had gone silent, raised her hand and pointed at the junction ahead of them, where four alleyways connected. Julia saw shadowy figures there, seemingly unaware of their presence. 

"Bad men," Aurele whispered. "Daddy knows them."

Julia gulped, wondering what exactly these men must have done to grab the attention of the Spade Emperor himself. Slowly, she knelt down into the snow, her hand touching Aurele's shoulder. 

"Listen to me, Aurele. Run back and grab help. Get your parents. I'll make sure they don't follow you."

Aurele's amber eyes widened in shock. Julia smiled confidently. 

"I'll be alright, don't worry. I'm the daughter of a Wizard King, after all."

"W-whoa!" Aurele whispered, stars appearing in her eyes. "Really?" Julia nodded, and the little girl smiled, before turning around. "Okay! I'll get help!"

"Good! Run quickly!"

As the girl ran off, Julia redirected her attention to the intersection, closing her eyes to listen more carefully to what they were whispering about.

"We almost had it."

"Damn… so, you have no idea where the Spirit went at all?"

"No. We got it separated from the Emperor, but then it just flew down into the city and disappeared. Probably hiding somewhere…"

There were three of them. Julia frowned, her heart pounding. Spirit? They could only be talking about Sylph, the Wind Spirit that had a contract with Yuno. Bell, she suddenly realized. That must be Bell! What do these men want with Bell…

"She's not going to be happy," one of the men said. "This is the one Spirit we may have been able to catch, while it's between users."

Julia didn't want to hear any more. After sucking in a deep breath, she straightened up, and stepped out into the opening.

"Am I interrupting something?"

The men whirled around, eyes widening.

"A magic knight?!" one exclaimed. "All the way out here?!"

"Kill her!" the other yelled, his Grimoire out.

"Wait!" The third one's eyes were fixed on Julia's face, recognition flickering like flames. "That's-"

Julia had already attacked, flashing by them with pops of purple and black.

"Void Magic: Violet Plague."

The men cried out as black spots trailed behind Julia, causing them to fall over. However, one of them seemed unfazed, raising his hands and deflecting the voids with a shimmer of sparks.

Not good! Julia thought. My magic can be canceled out by Spatial Magic like his. I need something more powerful, to overwhelm him…

With a sly smile, she turned on her heel, her Golden Dawn cloak flaring out behind her.

"Mana Zone: Dark Battlefield!"

All at once, voids burst open around the intersection, warping the space around it and blasting cold air onto them. Julia felt her skin prick with mana, and she willed herself to stay in control.

Control it. Control it.

"Ah!!! I can't move!" one of the men yelled, frozen in place as the voids tugged on his body, taut with fear.

"Hold on!" The spatial magic user tried to move his hand towards his grimoire.

Control it. Control it.

In a flash, Julia raised her hand, willing her mana to burn through the space around the grimoire. 

Control it. Control it.

The grimoire disappeared into the darkness, causing an anguished scream to ring out from its owner.

Julia grinned, happy to have captured one of their weapons. Now, I just need to knock them out! By the time help arrives, I'll be sitting here waiting for them!

"Ice magic!"

Someone yelled out a spell, and Julia turned just in time to see three deadly-sharp icicles shoot at her.

So deadly-sharp, they would impale her in an instant.

Her eyes widened, panic and adrenaline clutching her heart.

No!

She threw up her hands, and a wall of void was burned in the spot, swallowing up the icicles. However, her heart still pounded, the girl caught off-guard by the near-deadly attack.

Breathe- breathe-

The void stuttered.

Control it. Control-

And then it exploded.

Unable to control the surge of mana from her body, Julia could do nothing but cry out in pain as it engulfed her, too, leaving her suspended in nothingness.

Nothingness…

Why…

Fear. Panic. Anger. Regret.

Each emotion caused the void to get bigger, to consume her body further.

She had always heard people talk about how your life flashes before your eyes before you die, but Julia hadn't believed it until now. The images, the memories, only increased her despair, until she couldn't tell where she began and the void ended.

Regret, after regret, after regret flooded in.

I'll never see the twins join a squad.

I'll never be a captain, or even a senior magic knight.

I'll never see Juno again. Or mom, or dad.

It was so cold. Her eyes were open, but she couldn't see anything.

No… no… not like this…

And then, it was warm again.

Julia was being held. A soft voice wafted across her soul. With a shaky breath, she started to cry.

"No, no, it's alright, my darling, my love… Julia…"

That was her name. Julia.

"There's no reason to cry. I'm here. I'll protect you… from everything. I promise."

She couldn't see her mother's face, but she knew it was her. Lisa had been the first soul she felt, seperate from her own.

The memory was fading. Julia would return to that warm nothingness once again.

Someone else was there. A man.

Who…?

He was gentle. His hair was black. His voice was like her father's, but…

That was the last thing Julia saw, before the darkness returned, and there was nothing but starlight.

Four Hours later, Lisa and Julius rushed into the hospital, followed by Marx just behind them. Lisa didn't head Julius's shout as she arrived outside the room, bursting inside without hesitation. What she saw made her cry out and fall to her knees.

Julia was laying in the hospital bed, her skin pale, almost blue. Her eyes were glassy, staring at nothing, but the worst part was the voids. Numerous splotches of black, inky space were drifting across her skin, causing parts of her body to disappear and reappear again. As if she were fading in and out of existence forever.

"W-w-w-"

Lisa could barely form words. Owen was there, alongside Mimosa and Annick. Mimosa was crying openly, her hands spread over Julia, green healing magic flowing down on the unconscious girl. Owen looked up sharply as he saw Lisa enter, quickly rushing to her side. 

"She's alive, she's alive," he repeated, but Lisa could barely hear him. She felt Julius's arm wrap around her, gently pulling her back to her feet. She looked up at him, still in shock, only to see that his eyes were locked on Julia, his face completely devoid of color.

"What happened to her?" he asked quietly, although his voice was wavering, far from calm.

"She was fighting a group of criminals in the Spade Kingdom," Owen explained quickly. "We don't really know how, but her magic expanded rapidly… almost like an explosion. She fell inside…"

Oh god… no, no, no-

Memories of that terrible day 16 years ago flooded Lisa's mind. The day she almost lost Julia to her own magic. And now…

"Yuno was able to contain it, and save her. If it weren't for Fleur and Mimosa…" Owen's voice trailed off, before he shook his head, disregarding the possibility. "Luckily, she's stable now, but we will have to contain the rest of the void stuck to her body. Lisa…" The older man sucked in a breath, before gesturing at the bed. 

"We need your magic… with me, you, Mimosa, and Annick, we should be able to save her."

Save her…

"I-I'm sorry," Mimosa suddenly said, tears still in her eyes. "I-I-I was supposed to protect her on this trip, I sh-shouldn't have-"

"It's no one's fault." Annick took Mimosa's hand, giving it a squeeze before she looked at Lisa. "This is our only chance. We have to do it now."

"... right."

Lisa gulped, still short of breath and blurry-eyed with tears. She looked up at Julius.

"Together. We need as much power as we can muster- to- t-to-"

"To save our daughter." Julius finished her sentence, nodding solemnly and brushing tears out of his own eyes. Lisa could feel the panic washing off of him, too.

They both closed their eyes, still hand-in-hand. Then, mana burst forth, their marks glowing so bright it dimmed the rest of the light in the room. Owen flinched, but looked back to see that the pair was looking at him, their eyes ablaze.

"... I'm ready."

They walked to the bed, raising their hands over Julia. Mimosa, Annick, and Owen did the same, before unleashing the full force of their healing magic upon her.

I failed her… I failed her…

"No, you didn't."

I did! I was always supposed to protect her!!! And now…

Two pairs of arms were around her as she sobbed, openly and bitterly. Their warmth was the only thing keeping her together right now.

"You did everything a mother could. And now, you'll save her. You're protecting her, even now."

Slowly, the dark splotches of void began to disappear from Julia's skin. Her breaths shuddered, her hands trembling.

But Lisa could not stop crying, even as power surged through her, as those arms held her soul so, so close.

Please… please… don't let my daughter die…

It was a cold evening in the clover kingdom as the snow started to fall from the sky.

Yuno and Leo had been gifted with a day off and wanted to spend this time together. They have been working very hard theses past weeks so it was well deserved for the two.

They had decided to take a trip around town. It was pretty cold outside and you could see everyone covered up trying to keep themselves warm using scarfs, jackets, gloves and hats.

Thankfully, Leopold never had to worry about things like that too much. The side effects of being a fire mage. He never really felt cold in winter so it helped out. It was very inconvenient in summer times though.. Yuno would help out by cooling him down with some wind.

However, In winter times it’s Leo’s go to return the favour.

As the two were walking Leo was retelling the story of a previous event that had happened in the Vermillion Estate which had caused his room to blow up. Yuno on the other hand was just listening to Leo and let out a chuckle every now and then.

While Leo was talking, he noticed Yuno clench his fist as if he attempted to keep the warmth inside. After it didn’t work he put both his hands together. Leo just smiled and started laughing, earning Yuno’s attention. He had lost track on where Leo was on telling the story and he felt bad, but then he soon realised Leo was laughing at him.

“Huh? What’s so funny.” Yuno asked slightly confused on what he did to get his boyfriend laughing. Leo just kept laughing until he looked up at Yuno and gave him a bright smile, putting both his hands on him. Yuno smiled slightly as Leo’s warm Hands touched his.

Then it hit Yuno, so he noticed his struggle to keep warm. As much as he was annoyed that Leo was laughing at him, he found it quite cute. Leo kissed Yuno’s hands and put it to his chest then let out a small chuckle. “You are so cute, Yuno! You could have just asked to hold my hand” Leo smiled up at him. Yuno couldn’t help but give a small one in return.

“You seemed a bit busy talking about a tragic event in your life” Yuno twirled the end of Leopold’s braid.

“It was definitely a scary one!” Leo laughed removing one of his hands from Yuno’s and putting it on his cheek. Leo chuckled as Yuno leaned into the touch seeking out for the warmth.

“You know I think my lips are cold to” Yuno teased getting closer to Leo’s face seeing a tint of pink appear on his cheeks. Without second thought Leo leaned closer to Yuno and connected their lips together.

He had no idea why he was so attracted to you. You grew onto him ever since you first met and he found himself thinking of you a lot of the time. You were just so... perfect.

You knew when to be fun and friendly and at the same time, you could hold yourself with dignity and grace when neccessary.

Your peers loved you, the higher ups respected you and your juniors admired you. You were humble and you always treated everyone equally, whether it was the wizard king or a peasant.

Yuno found his eyes always glancing in your direction whenever you're around. He tries to play it cool; but when you're here, it seemed like he couldn't even behave normally. He found himself racking his brains thinking about some lame excuse to get to talk to you.

Sometimes, he couldn't think of one, so he had to watch you from afar, watching other guys approach you with their ill intentions of wanting you all to themselves. Yuno would feel a pinch in his heart whenever he sees that, because he wanted you all to himself.

If the cupid gods were on his side that day, there would be a legitimate reason for him to approach you. He would straighten his clothes and run his finger through his unruly hair, hoping to make them look slightly better than they were. He would take a deep breathe and finally talk to you.

Yuno was more of an introvert, but when it came to you, he tried to be a little more outgoing. If you were going to the festival? Yea, he’ll join. If you were going to that team dinner ? He’ll be free.

There were many times when you were both alone, seeing how you were both from the same squad and all, and Yuno would he at loss of what to say. Everything that came from his tongue were magic and power and the mission itself. Thankfully you were able to start conversations and could talk to him pretty well.

The rest of the Golden Dawn could tell that Yuno had a crush on you, they usually had to call and invite him for outings and gatherings. But if you were going, he’ll ask, “so what time and where is it this Saturday ?”

“Just confess to her already, Yuno!” Mimosa exclaimed one day while they were on petrol duty, “get some flowers and ask her out for a meal or something!”

“Just let nature take it’s course,” Yuno was serious when he was at work.

“Man up Yuno, you’re strong in combat but what about girls? I’m sure Asta is better at saying his feelings.”

Yuno could never lose to his rival. Not in any aspect. “Very well, I shall do it then.”

💕ˀˀ. . . ₎ Hopeless romantic, but she tries not to. Yuno is a very delicate balance between constantly daydreaming and being aware that life is not a Disney movie, but nothing sounds better than that little scenario in her head about hugging her crush before falling asleep that just 😔🤌.  She's by far the most open about her feelings in general, so it is pretty obvious when she likes someone too. Her main way to show affection is physical touch, so even if she plays cool and not bothered at all while being afraid of being clingy, you can see her staring at your hand like 👁👄👁. 

🎻ˀˀ. . . ₎ A loud bad singer. Grim hates it, but can’t bring it to tell her to shut up because she only sings out loud when she's really happy or really sad, the poor thing. Also, her upbringing made her really into classical music, like Tchaikovsky and Vivaldi and she listens to it almost everyday, but overall pretty eclectic out of it.

 Yuno is into a lot of indie and kpop on a daily basis too. Also the type of person that always listens to people's recommendations, or learns her friends' favorites to vibe with them.

💕ˀˀ. . . ₎ His love language is words of affirmation, so it would be nothing weird to him to come and "you know I love you" or very soft whisper out a "my evening star". Even in platonic, it is not weird for him to say out of nowhere a "bro, you're my favorite person”. but Facile doesn't have any priority in romantic love at all. He's seventeen, it isn't like he's going to meet the love of his life just now, right? right?

🎻ˀˀ. . . ₎ He tried to play piano like Sam when he was younger but what really made him passionate was saxophone. He plays on the afternoons in the Pomefiore lounge for Vil, or after his shift in Mr.S Shop, when he can. He’s also a fan of Jazz and Blues, mostly because of Sam and their homeland.

Also a really good singer, but they don't bother to show it since they like to poke Pannik nerves telling he's the gifted kid from their family.

💕ˀˀ. . . ₎ He's born to friends to lovers trope. Pannik is too shy for any kind of relationship that he doesn't know deeply. His main way to show affection is through words of affirmation but in his own way: with music; you can expect a ton shit of Playlist made for or thinking about you on his phone, and for sure he will be writing songs about you too, but you will have to take it from his dead cold hands 😊

🎻ˀˀ. . . ₎ Pannik loves music more than himself, but he can easily follow the sad boy aesthetic with the amounts of indie and grunge he listens to. Believe it or not he's pretty much into everything (please listen to his recommendations).

Pannik is always with his headphones for when he needs to calm down, if he loses or it breaks things get really bad.

Thoughts on Magic Knight Entrance Exams

I have been thinking on how the Captains really choose their recruits during the Magic Knight Entrance Exams, so instead of studying, I gathered those thoughts here. It also has some thoughts about the Entrance Exam itself in the beginning 😁

(Ch = chapter, Ep = episode)

Entrance exams.

Based on the manga, every year, in March, those that are 15-year old get their grimoires in the Grimoire Acceptance Ceremony (Ch:1).

In the manga, the Magic Knights Entrance Exam is after six months from there (Ch:2). This would put it to September. It's unknown whether they recruit every year or if the recruitment is distributed differently, since instead of serving a certain amount of years, it seems to be more of a job than military service. Since lot of the characters seem to have joined Magic Knights as 15-year-olds, it seems to suggest that it is a yearly occurance. (E.g. the wiki says Julius joined Grey Deers' immediately as a 15 year old, meaning he has served ~27 years.)

We are only shown that there are possibly over 165 participants, and considering that the captains handpick those they want, there can't be an immense sum. They neither seem to recruit too many at a time - Black Bulls recruited 1 (since Noelle didn't participate in the actual exam), seemingly Golden Dawn also only took Yuno and as far as we know, Sekke could have been the only Green Mantis recruit. The squad sizes should probably also have an effect (how many more the squad needs to maintain their size), but it's hard to make guesses based on that. It seems like they recruit very few people every year, though. According to the anime (Ep:5), the first participant even chosen is only number 71, meaning 70 first participants didn't become knights.

Captains.

As said before, the Captains make the choices in the entrance exams. The interesting thing is that they don't seem to have their vice-captains to help with the part, but rather...just someone from the squad (Ch:2). While Yami has Finral & Gordon, it looks like William has Siren Tium by his side and Fuegoleon has Leopold. The anime seems to show Nebra by Nozel's side (Ep:4).

Maybe the vice-captains take care of the missions while the captains spend their day choosing recruits, so they pick someone whose judgement they trust?

So how do the captains choose who they want?

As shown by everyone wanting Yuno, they all want someone powerful (possibly due to the four-leaf-grimoire), someone somewhat ambitious - Yuno's calm demeanor could also have an effect. All were willing to look past him being a peasant.

Yami, William and Charlotte are the easiest to make guess for what kind of people they are looking for.

Yami (Black Bulls) wants outcasts and people who interest him. He wants to provide a safe growing place for hooligans and outsiders (Ep: 86). This means he also recruits largely outside of the exams. I'd wager that for him, having some physical strength is also a plus (looking at Asta/Magna).

William (Golden Dawn) recruited those with elves' souls and possibly those with great potential for growth - those who could bring hope to normal people. He is probably likely to take already powerful people.

Charlotte (Blue Rose) most likely looks out for passionate women to give them places in the squad and possibility of defending themselves and others. Interestingly enough, it has been mentioned that she also has men in her squad as "errand boys" (Ch:111), which...has implications I don't quite like. I'm not sure what is Charlotte's criteria for choosing men to the squad and I'm not sure I want to know.

Since Fuegoleon's and Nozel's squads also form the Royal Castle Knights (Ch: 173), they both are likely to lean towards more noble candidates. I trust Fuegoleon to discriminate less than Nozel on this part. Everything here is guesswork, though.

Nozel (Silver Eagles) would most likely recruit dedicated and cool-headed people with good amount of mana. I wouldn't be surprised if he only recruited nobles, but as seen with Yuno, probably also takes those with great magical ability.

Fuegoleon (Crimson Lion Kings) probably recruits passionate people who want to protect the Kingdom...with certain amount of mana. I'd suspect that he likes candidates that show analytical skill and strategical skill.

The absolute unknowns for me are the four rest, mainly because we know so little of their squads.

Gueldre (Purple Orca) seems to have picked rather scoundrelly/underhanded types - people with little empathy and possibly quite a bit of ambition. It can be seen in his vice-captain, Xerx Lugner, who is seen as a saint, but is actually cruel and arrogant. Kaiser (Purple Orca) will hopefully have a different approach as the new captain. According to Fuegoleon, he is an upstanding and humble man (which begs the question - how did he end up in Gueldre's squad?), and it might be a sign that he would concentrate more on recruiting similar people as himself.

Jack (Green Mantis) recruited Sekke, who showed some amount of skill in the battle with his Cannonball (being able to defend&attack), but also seems to be rather accurate and have good control over his magic in the exam (Ch:2). En, another from the squad, doesn't really show the same cunning, but also has a great control over his magic. I don't think Jack recruits based on personality as much as people who (or their magic) interests him, perhaps?

Dorothy (Coral Peacock) and her vice-captain, Kirsch, make a very interesting combo. Cheerful dreams + arrogant beauty gives very imaginative vibes. If we knew any more of the squad, I'd imagine they could recruit people with imaginative ways of using their magic and helping them use that with teams. I have no real clue, however, what would be the criteria Dorothy uses.

Rill (Aqua Deer) probably would go for somewhat artistic types? I'd see it very easily at least. Whether they are delicate or wild with their magic, maybe those with some artistic inclination could find a place with him?

Yuno inhaled the cool autumn air, held it in his lungs, and slowly released it. He had been very stressed lately, why? Because of all the battles against devils recently. He was so stressed that he finally realized that he needed a break from everyone and retreated to a small grassy field that was close enough to their campsite, but far enough away that he wouldn’t be bothered.

“ What’s the Star Prince got to sigh about? Is being too good just weighing on your shoulders?” A voice asked suddenly, and Yuno opened his eyes as he turned his head to see none other than Liebe, Asta’s devil, sitting in the lone tree that stood in the field.

“ Of course not,” Yuno said with a roll of his eyes. “ It’s just that there’s a lot of people around, so I needed a break from them.” He explained as he closed his eyes again, he heard Liebe jump out of the tree and walk towards him before sitting down.

“ Yeah, I get it. I’ve never been around this many people since being released from Asta’s grimoire and it’s…it’s a lot.” Liebe admitted as he looked back at the campsite.

“ People think that because I’m a devil I’m heartless and that I don’t feel things. But I do y’know? I hear them whispering about me and how they’re all either afraid of me or they hate me. That’s why I don’t like people, they act one way in front of you and act completely different once you turn your back.” Liebe muttered before laying down on the grass as well.

“ I understand that feeling all too well. People…people are very two faced. They praise me and say how amazing I am while on the inside they’re full of jealousy, some will express their anger and jealousy to my face while on the inside they really admire me. It’s just…how people are.” Yuno said softly as he looked at Liebe, this was probably one of the few things the two had in common.

“ People just suck.” Yuno and Liebe said at the same time, the two suddenly looked at each other in surprise before laughing.

The two continued to talk about how much people sucked and agreed that only very few people in the world didn’t, mainly Asta, before they were called back to the campsite to come eat.

That day, an unlikely friendship had formed, that maybe one day would turn into something more.

I honestly didn't know anything about it going into it except that Yuno was a yandere. So the whole plot line being the fact that someone wanted to become god was a pleasant surprise

I don't have much to say about the plot itself. It was pretty straight forward. I think the pacing was a little wonky, which was why it took me a bit to finish the series, considering how short it is. Usually I can mow through something of that length in a day or two. It just took me a bit to get genuinely hooked, because the first part of it was a little slow, and the first few encounters with other diary users were a little repetitive. My attention wasn't truly grabbed until the part with all the dogs, and then I was like "oh okay this is starting to get genuinely interesting now" and then I was hooked hooked as soon as Yuki's parents died and he went off the deep end and started justifying killing people because if he became god he could just bring them back and reset everything. That was genuinely really interesting.

I also figured out the plot twist of Yuno being from a different timeline really early on? I mean, they basically put that in the intro, so I think you were supposed to, but as soon as they found a third body with her dead parents I was like "oh yep, this Yuno came from a different timeline and killed the Yuno from this one so she could get to Yuki." It wasn't a bad plot twist, and it is good for plot twists to have clear hints, but it might have been a little too predictable for the tone of the series.

Um... of course there is Yuno and Yuki's whole relationship? It obviously is super unhealthy, and while on one hand that is extremely obvious, there are times the anime seems to try and make the audience genuinely root for it, and frame it in a cute, loving light which was... not great? I also just have a lot of beef with "yandere" characters, considering how they're violent caricatures of borderline personality disorder, which is bad obviously. It's not that Yuno herself isn't an interesting character, but given the context and the whole "trope" of yanderes and how those characters contribute to those harmful stereotypes of BPD, she makes me a little :/ I couldn't really thoroughly enjoy her because of that. Like we all know I love a fun, unhealthy, codependent toxic relationship in fiction, but given all of this ^^^ yeah, not for me, I have to admit

And then everything at the end with Murmur was.... so very strange? Idk, very rushed, and felt out of place, I would have preferred that not happened and she not meddled in the game at all.

I did like a lot of the side characters though! My favorite was... fuck, I can't remember her name, but the bomb lady with the eyepatch! She was cool! And her little romance with the detective guy was fun, I genuinely really liked all of that. The couple that made was a diary user was also nice too, I liked them, and their deaths kinda hurt

Overall, I don't have a lot of super strong feelings about the series one way or the other. It definitely wasn't any pinnacle of fantastic storytelling, but I don't think it was horrendous by any means. It had some really interesting aspects, even if most of them weren't explored to their fullest potential. The fan service was a bit much at times, but when is that not true of fan service so eh, not much to say in that department

But yeah! Those are my (albeit jumbled) thoughts about the series :D
